Art nouveau inspired Crowley The Snake of Eden

Symbolism breakdown and closeups under the cut (buckle up 'cause there's a lot of symbolism. You have been warned)

This whole piece took me over 18 hours to finish (closer to 19 if my calculations are correct, and this is without including the planing/thumbnails) so I hope you'll enjoy 😊

Symbolism:

Snake - Crowleys serpent form/the snake of Eden

Stars and moon- Crowley is (or at least was) the Starmaker, so I wanted to include some astronomy related imagery

The constellation on the dark side of the moon is Serpens Caput - Snakes Head (I know this is not how the moon works, and it's not possible to see the stars through it, but this is my artistic interpretation, because I wanted to include stars. I also know this is not exacly how this constellation looks, but it's close enough)

The frame around the moon doubles as the clock face, because of Crowleys time manipulation powers and his association with time in general

The yellow/golden rays emiting from the clock make it look like the sun during eclipse

Crowleys hair has a gradient making it look like fire (a reference to his fall to hell)

Flower symbolism (from left to right):

Monstera plant - I used it because it's one of the plants Crowley has, but also the name Monstera sounds very similar to the word monster (plus it looks nice)

Ambrosia - love is reciprocated

Purple hyacinth - grief, regret and sorrow

Pansy - thoughtfulness, affection, friendship, "think of me"; can also symbolise sorrow and regret (and in the context of Good Omens, there's also THE Southern Pansy)

Tulips in general - deep, perfect love, consuming love

Yellow tulips - cheerfulness, hope, desperate/hopeless love (also we all know Aziraphale thinks that yellow is pretty 💛)

Bellflower - unwavering love, a constant heart

Daisy in general - loyal love

Blue daisy - long term layalty and trust

Forget-me-not - true/faithful love, affectionate remembrance, don't forget me

Amaranth in general - immortality

Globe amaranth - immortal love

Snake plant - I used it because Crowley is a snake, and it looks cool

Lilly of the valley - returning happiness

I know it was a lot so thanks everyone who took the time to read all of my rambling. I really like adding stuff like this to my illustrations, so that they have more of a meaning and thought behind them 😅

Life makes no sense when someone with so much to live for is taken away too soon.

I know nobody really knew her as she was a very private person. For the few who visited her blog or posts, it gave a small insight into who she was, and you may appreciate this post, but for most, this post will not even be noticed.

However, for me, it is important to say something, to hold the memory of someone who was part of your life, even if only for a short time.

I don't know if I can properly capture who she was in a few words. She was a deep caring, compassionate, smart, talented woman. An artist in so many ways. A poet with books to her credit. The poem in the photo is hers. She had an incredible eye for design, decoration, and fashion. She loved classic cars and drag racing. She also had a deep pride and passion for her homeland of Finland, always sharing the beauty and traditions of her country through her photography of nature. She also had an enormous love for music, and that is how we met.

I really don't know how to put into words the impact someone you have never met in person can have on your life, and i really dont know how to say good-bye. So I won't and I will just end this with a song.

anyways this piece comes from a lot of anger about current world events as is probably obvious

amaranth is a secret changeling whose gender and sex are hard to define in human terms. she feels most closely aligned with trans mascs and butches, and because her true form has a flat chest she chose to give her disguise top surgery scars to still feel connected to that aspect of herself. while she still wishes to exist in her true form, for personal/story reasons she cannot, so she takes pride in the scars she chooses to bear. using she/her while being super masc is honestly just for extra gender flavoring and because she likes confusing people ❤️

Something i think is kinda underutilized in spec evo right now is alternate domesticates. There's potentially hundreds of thousands of domesticatable edible plants and animals and such, and humanity only ended up domesticating a tiny slice of the worlds biodiversity. And the divergence from the wild types is extreme- it's evolution at hyperspeed

this is all the product of like, a few thousand years of effort and it's so utterly divergent, it's incredible. You see the possibilties here, right? You can place your point of divergence incredibly recently- maybe only a few millenia back- barely have to change much about the world- and get a radically different human symbiote biosphere. What if we'd domesticated amaranth instead of wheat? Weasels instead of cats? The possibilities are (almost) endless

and that's not even getting into the alternate history aspects. Imagine how different history would've turned out if rather than having to wait for europeans to reintroduce horses to the americas, the peoples of the great plains had been mounted centuries or millennia earlier on the backs of riding-deer

Notes on details:

From top to bottom, the flowers are: Dandelion (overcoming hardship), Prince's Feather Amaranth (immortality/unfading), Blackthorn (fate/protection/hope against adversity), and Lotus (rebirth)

Miranda's hand at the top wields the marionette rod (or whatever they're called), the strings connecting both to Angie + Donna's hands. Donna, in turn, has strings connected to puppet Angie, representing how Donna is responsible for keeping the puppet body going/active. She also has some control over Angie, trying to keep her safe without revealing what really happened after the car accident.

Half of Angie's face is her normal color, the other half (divided by something originally meant to mimic kintsugi) is her doll colors (seen during her cult ending).

Big circles on the sides, with the beams? Headlights. because car crash. because Idk felt like being a little evil I guess.
