more act 1 thoughts! major spoilers below

so far the only complaint I have about season two is that I really wanted to see more of the turf wars between the chem barons. I wish smeech had been a bigger character and didn’t die off so quickly; his voice actor did an incredible job and his personality was fun to watch so i’m kinda sad they got rid of him so fast

also the thing with Amara felt so so sudden with no hints leading up to it or anything and I have no clue what’s going on there LOL but that might just be me missing something

other than that I absolutely LOVED act 1! the animation somehow got even better; I really enjoyed most of the music video sequences, the style changes (like the sketch animation in e1 and the comic in e3) were amazing, and I love what they’re doing with all the characters (except mel. where. is. mel. if she’s dead…..nobody talk to me)

ALSO this isn’t a complaint and is definitely me not understanding hexcore stuff but how did Viktor know that he would be able to heal the shimmer addicts? did he just assume bc the thing jayce put him in healed him?

I have a theory, it just relies on the writers being really into dumb ecology puns. Here goes. A man named FINN is the one to let Sevika know that there's a bigger FISH after Silco's position. Meanwhile, the audience has already met a corrupt Piltovan merchant called Amara, which is pronounced the exact same way as Aimara, a large predator fish species found in river systems. And you know why Amara's gambit won't succeed, because Aimara make big game for FISSURE(FISHER) FOLK.

Someone on the writing team would have to be a dedicated ecology nerd to make that happen.

Have not seen a single person talking about this one yet, but...

Like does Amara have a grandson (or something) named Rohan?

I have seen a lot of speculation whether Amara is a Black Rose member or a LeBlanc clone, so like... would a clone still have a family and a whole life? A merchant business? Etc.

This next one I have seen people talk about, but... piggy backing on:

Do we know if the same could be said for Elora? If she was real or a clone or a sleeper agent of some sort without knowing? Do we think her death was real or fabricated, and if it was real, it was just meant to twist the knife in tormenting Mel into activating her full potential? Could she still be out there somewhere, if she ever truly existed at all?

Okay while im proud of the tarot deck I made of arcane season 1 screenshots, I think it says a lot about the quality of arcane that these brief moments ended up being plot points in season two. Even without knowing why, the audience (me) could pick up on the significance of these pieces.

5 of swords: the necklace

Meaning: arguments about ideas/opinions/morals; no common ground; winning at all costs (or not acknowledging/recognizing the costs); alienation for beliefs

In season 1, the necklace represented Mel's memory of her mother's choice to kill the heir to the kingdom because winning decisively was more important than mercy. In season 2, the necklace takes on the additional meaning, and mel is wearing it when she defeats her mother defending her home.

In both cases it is a symbol of an argument over principles. Actually now I think about, even though she 'loses' in season one and is banished for her weak choice, and wins in season two with her new power, mel loses her mother in both. Which is the lesson of the card--no one wins in war.

4 of pentacles

Meaning: hoarding money, fortune, or power; fear of losing what you have; investments

In season 1, Mel coaches Jayce on how to deal with the council because some of them, like Amara, don't like his interference with their trade deals. They want to hold on to their comforts and power. Jayce invites Amara to invest with him as a hextech partner. In season 2, we see Amara is a black rose, and tries to stop Ambessa from finding the secret power (mel).

Amara here is always trying to prevent change and doesn't want to give up what she considers hers. Unfortunately, as we know from the lessons of the four of pentacles, you can't hold off change forever. And you certainly can't own a person.

The Medarda arc of s2 struggled to be good, because the plot viciously smothered it. You can argue that Arcane was never about politics but you cannot say the Medardas were never explicitly a family defined by politics. So when the show shifted it's priorities from a drama steeped in political conflict where even though the setting was fantastical the stakes were grounded to a shift where magic is the end all be all threat to humanity, the Medardas are rendered largely irrelevant.

In s2 Mel's agency over her own story is both largely stripped from her and poorly communicated. Arcane has Mel abducted from the plot to be the Black Rose's captive. Even when Mel manages to free herself it's not through the traits the audience understands are her strengths, her cunning and social intelligence, it's through an innate instinct that natural to her and indecipherable to the audience.

Ambessa as a character is more or less a villain of convenience, which would be fine if she wasn't immediately following Silco's act. Once Mel is removed from the story Ambessa is largely disconnected from any emotional tension fuels conflict between the characters and previously drove the plot in s1. She's there to play the worse bad guy for Caitlyn and then give Viktor the man power for the Glorious Evolution.

It's frustrating to see the Medardas used the way they are in s2 because when they're together I can see how it could be good. When they're together Mel forces emotion out of Ambessa. In Act 1, Ambessa proved she could do circles around Piltover's court, which could actually put Mel in a tight spot.

Their final scene on paper sounds like a good idea where the true resolution to Mel and Ambessa's story was that Ambessa saw Mel's own ruthless behavior as she not only betrayed Ambessa to the Black Rose, but used her as BAIT to double cross LeBlanc. Ambessa died proud that her daughter killed her the way she did, and that's so cool and tragic, but the execution was a flop.

One, their final fight is completely unimportant to the actual Glorious Evolution, Mel's grief can't even be a highlight because it's interrupted by Viktor's mind trap. Two, their fight didn't rely on any of Mel's actual strengths, just magic and the poorly explained MacGuffin LeBlanc gave her. How did Mel even know it would do that?

It's like the writers had the bones for a great story for the Medardas, but then they're like the world's worst archeologists and fit those bones together in the worst way possible because they were convinced the bones made a stegasaurus instead of a T-rex or something.

The Matron was momentarily caught off guard by the sudden appearance of none other than Jayce Talis. Rumors had swirled about his mysterious disappearance, but none provided any concrete evidence about what had become of the prodigious scientist.

At least now, she could ask him directly. All she knew was that his vanishing act had something to do with the Hexcore.

“Mr. Talis!” Amara exclaimed, nearly spilling her tea as she set the cup aside in haste. Her eyes widened in surprise, the delicate wrinkles at their corners stretching with the motion. “We’ve all been wondering where you disappeared to! The city has been in utter chaos since the attack on the Council!”

It was then that her gaze fully took in his disheveled state. Concern softened her tone.

“Please, sit down!” she urged, gesturing toward a nearby chair. “I’ll call for a doctor to examine you at once!”

Time shifts under the power of the hex core, the magic, itself. He does not know if this is past, present or future. He had stop counting for ages already, but-

it is easy to see, when someone else has magic on them as well.

One second he was not there, the next he is imposed on this time line without much reason.

"I'll be gone in a few minutes." he says, distracted by much of everything else. feeling stable, if only for a few minutes.

INITIAL THOUGHTS ON ARCANE SEASON 2 ACT 1 (EPISODES 1-3)

(i’m not good at putting my thoughts into words so feel free to give your own opinions, i rlly wanna hear them)

SPOILERS AHEAD///

ok so my biggest critique is the pacing. everything is very quick very fast and a lot is going on. i understand that this is immediately after a large event which of course caused a reaction however it was just very intense and a lot to keep up with especially considering the amount of new and confusing things introduced throughout the three episodes with minimal slow down. it was alittle difficult to keep up. the timeline of the show is confusing and i have no idea how long it has been between scenes. viktor was barely in that weird healing chamber for a few scenes before he was emerging as someone new. caitlyn and vi were going from loving to fighting to understanding to fighting again very quickly with little time to develop independently, their kiss and divorce weren’t even 30 minutes apart from each other. also, who the fuck is this kid hanging around with jinx?? why is she following her, why doesn’t she talk, what’s her name, how long has she been with her?? this lack of time to let things develop has caused these episodes to feel rushed.

with this introduction of many new things some have left me with a lot of questions. my biggest issue revolves around the arcane. i literally do not recall it being mentioned or being an important topic in s1 but all of a sudden jayce knows a fuck ton about it as well as heimerdinger? when did he learn this? i assume it’s from viktors notes and research but that still fails to cover the amount of knowledge jayce now possesses.

HOWEVER THE ARCANE IS VERY COOL AND IM VERY VERY INVESTED. i absolutely love the changes to viktor, his weird apathy and changes are definitely rushed but so interesting to see, his design and behaviour are so very compelling and im very excited to see the development. additionally, this group dynamic between jayce, ekko and heimerdinger is soooooo fun. it offers a break from the intensity with some silliness i think is desperately needed, plus it’s super satisfying to see the trio bounce off each other. that final scene of them in ep3 was visually incredible and i loved seeing the effects upon the hextech weapons during the jinx, sevika vs vi, caitlyn fight. the scene of viktor amongst the shimmer infected was very interesting and it was so cool to truly see the severe effects of shimmer and the inhumanity of viktor is making a clear route towards his glorious evolution which is am keen to watch.

that ambessa reveal at the end was INCREDIBLE. i genuinely didn’t see it coming and it made my jaw DROP. the quiet, smart suspicion from mel is always incredible to see, her political mind and morals conflicting is so very engaging and she’s really developing into herself in these episodes which was a joy to witness. the mystery of her brother is compelling and links well through s1 and s2 to make the storyline fun to follow. i also simply must compliment the designs revolving around the noxians and animal-esque (sorry idk what they’re called) people. the absolute variety and inspiration from real life cultures is beautiful to see. i am incredibly confused about the magic and that one lady (amara?) but i assume that’ll be answered in later episodes.

jinx is not looking good lmao. i love her design being so corpse-like and deathly, it really fits well and really embraces the differences between powder and jinx. but i do wish we saw more of her. i see her actions but i lack understanding for some of them, primarily revolving around the child (isha?) and why the kids even there but the newfound bond between sevika and jinx is refreshing to see. the scene of them in silcos old office brought a smile to my face and the design of that fucking arm is soooo cool i love the clownish purely jinx vibe to it.

caitlyn is probably the stand out character so far (plus maybe viktor). her absolute grief and seeing her facade break down throughout the episodes was heartbreaking, the tentative yet conflicting moments of softness with vi were beautiful yet had that perfect undercurrent of tragedy that arcane masters so well. her rage and break up with vi was easy to see coming yet so incredibly jarring to watch, that harsh and merciless behaviour is so different from s1, the development is well done and a morbid pleasure to see. and that final episode. oh my. the shock to acceptance of darkness was fantastic, ambessa truly is a master at manipulating weakness in even the strongest of people and seeing this duo is going to be so soul crushing that i’m itching for more.

vi felt very rushed to me and alittle dry? idk why tho i can’t really explain it. i understand her choices but it felt like something was missing until that final scene with cait. that was an absolute masterpiece. seeing her realising that the horrors of war is corrupting everyone around her and pleading for it to please not happen is so so SO fucking sad and my heart was breaking. i loved seeing her moral strength and solidity to her values which has always been a key part of her character so i appreciate the consistency. idk why something about her was just… different.

the opening scene was incredible. the absolute horror of it was so clear and i was literally shaking the entire time. 10/10 opening.

overall, i hope things slow down alittle but i greatly enjoyed season 2 and im very excited to see the characters develop and to see even more of this beautiful world.
