Paris Olympics: Aman Sehrawat adds to India’s tally with bronze in 57-kg wrestling
Aman Sehrawat secured a bronze medal in the men’s 57 kg freestyle category with a dominating 13-5 win over Puerto Rico’s Darian Cruz as India ended what could only be described as a heartbreaking campaign for Indian wrestlers following the loss of a medal because of Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification.

How a Timely Phone Call from Sushil Kumar Transformed Aman Sehrawat's Wrestling Journey
Aman Sehrawat, India's only male wrestler at the Paris Olympics, has experienced a transformative journey, thanks to a timely phone call from Sushil Kumar. Despite sharing a modest room with fellow wrestlers at Chhatrasal Stadium, Sehrawat's determination and spirit have taken a significant leap.
The 20-year-old wrestler has big shoes to fill, stepping in for Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Ravi Dahiya in the 57 kg category. After missing an Olympic quota at the Asian Qualifiers in Bishkek, Sehrawat was determined yet anxious. It was then that he received a motivational call from Sushil Kumar, a two-time Olympic medallist.
Sehrawat recalls Sushil's advice vividly: “He told me not to get too defensive and to aim to fight the full six minutes. He emphasized not being indecisive and sticking to my attacking style.” This advice was crucial in helping Sehrawat secure India’s first and only men’s Olympic quota at the World Qualifiers in Istanbul.
Despite his prowess in attack, Sehrawat acknowledges the need to strengthen his defense, a crucial aspect at the senior level. Coach Lalit Kumar ensures that Sehrawat focuses on his strengths while improving his defense to be well-rounded for the Paris Olympics.
Sehrawat's journey is marked by inspiration from Chhatrasal legends like Sushil Kumar, Yogeshwar Dutt, and Ravi Dahiya. He aims to follow their footsteps and bring glory to his wrestling nursery at the Olympics.
Training at Chhatrasal since his early teens, Sehrawat’s resilience has been unwavering. The support from his coaches and the legacy of his predecessors motivate him daily. As he prepares for the Paris Olympics, Sehrawat's dream of an Olympic medal fuels his rigorous training, embodying the spirit of Chhatrasal.

Aman Sehrawat loses 4.6 kg in 10 hours, qualifies for weigh-in, and secures Olympic bronze.
Aman Sehrawat clinched the bronze medal in the 57 kg category. Despite the pressure, Aman stayed awake throughout the night. Coach Dahiya mentioned that they had to monitor his weight hourly. After his semifinal loss on Thursday, August 8, Aman Sehrawat faced an enormous challenge as he prepared for his bronze medal match. At 61.5kg, he was 4.5kg over the allowed limit for the men’s 57kg category and had just 10 hours to drop the extra weight. Indian coaches Jagmander Singh and Virender Dahiya played a crucial role in guiding him to shed the weight before the next weigh-in.
Maintaining weight within the permissible limit has become a major focus in wrestling, especially after the Vinesh Phogat incident. The Indian wrestler was disqualified from the women's 50kg final for exceeding the weight limit by just 100g during the second-day weigh-in.
The wrestler's fate now lies in the hands of the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which will rule on her appeal and may grant her a joint-silver medal. However, Jadmander and Dahiya were resolute in their approach with Aman, determined to prevent a repeat of the Vinesh scenario.

‘Fading’: Wrestler Aman to complain to IOC over ‘defective’ Olympic medal
New Delhi: Amid the reports that all defective medals from the 2024 Paris Olympics will be replaced after multiple complaints about the medals deteriorating and tarnishing, Indian wrestler Aman Sehrawat’s bronze medal’s colour also started fading, but the wrestler is yet to file a complaint regarding the issue. [ad_1] Jasprit Bumrah (PC: X) Boria Majumdar in Sydney Who is India’s best red-ball cricketer at the moment? Rather, who is India’s best player across all formats? The answer, most will agree, is Jasprit Bumrah. He is India’s numero uno, and the impact he has had globally is just phenomenal. And yet, he isn’t Indian cricket’s biggest brand. If you look at crowd pullers or men who command much more money in the market, you will see Bumrah way down the pecking order. Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant, Shubman Gill and then, maybe, Bumrah alongside KL Rahul. Shouldn’t it be that your best player is the biggest brand? More so when he is as articulate and as poised as Bumrah? And yet, that’s not the case. The question to ask is why. Is it because he is a bowler, and it has forever been about batters in Indian cricket? Maybe that’s why Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, Virender Sehwag or VVS Laxman were bigger brands than Anil Kumble, who was one of India’s biggest match-winners. The same can be said of Ravichandran Ashwin. There is no debate that Ashwin was one of India’s biggest match-winners in the last decade and a half. And yet he wasn’t given the same brand value as Kohli or Rohit or Hardik Pandya. Is there a method to this madness, or is it just about how things are and have always been? Why wouldn’t the market go with the best players? Is it because Kohli is married to Anushka Sharma, a big star in her own right, and that has helped the cumulative brand value of the couple? But then, Ritika isn’t a celebrity, and yet Rohit is certainly a bigger brand than many I have mentioned above. For the Latest Sports News: Click Here Virat Kohli with Jasprit Bumrah after the SCG Test (PC: Debasis Sen) We have forever felt that brand value is directly related to performance. You win an Olympic medal and you are a brand back home. But except for Manu Bhaker and Neeraj Chopra, none of the medal winners at the Olympics have become brands. Be it Sarabjot Singh, Aman Sehrawat or Swapnil Kusale, none of them have become poster boys in India despite winning an Olympic medal. Coming to the Paralympics, Navdeep Singh is now a household name. But the same can’t be said of Harvinder (archery gold) or Nitesh (badminton gold). And this is where things turn a bit problematic. When one athlete starts to command more money and more endorsements, it automatically creates unpleasantness or jealousy. In fact, it is to an extent inevitable. As for Bumrah, I think the next three to four years will belong to him. With both Kohli and Rohit in the twilight of their careers, Bumrah is surely Indian cricket’s biggest brand in the not-too-distant future. The fact that he has a very good head on his shoulders should help, and also the fact that he stands for the very middle-class-Indian values of family first. May I also say he deserves it. To bowl the way he has done takes a lot and the least he can get in return is fan support and market value. That he is a very likeable personality should also make a difference, and in England, we expect to see a lot more of Bumrah in the press during the build-up to what promises to be a terrific summer. New Delhi: Getting your picture on the dank walls of the wrestling hall in the capital’s Chhatrasal Stadium is an aspirational legacy. It’s an honour extended to Olympic medallists who have honed their skills here, which means Sushil Kumar and Ravi Dahiya are right up there, poring over the lithe, sweaty bodies going through the grind on the mat below. Aman Sehrawat had won bronze in men’s 57 kg freestyle wrestling at the Paris Olympics 2024, becoming India’s youngest Olympic medalist (PTI) When Aman Sehrawat returned to his alma mater after winning bronze at the Paris Olympics last August, he decided to delay the di rigueur. “I want a picture with the President of India,” he is learned to have said, indicating his desire for the Arjuna award. On Thursday, his wish came true with Aman becoming the only wrestler to get a national sports award in the 2024 iteration. A total of 32 para and able-bodied athletes will receive Arjuna for their performance over the past four years while another four will be bestowed with Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award. “It is a great feeling. As a kid, I sometimes dreamt of dressing up in a nice suit and get awarded by the president. Kaha se aye thy or kaha pahuch gaye,” he said. The 21-year-old has indeed come a long way from his native Birohar village in Haryana to become the present and future of Indian wrestling. His picture will, without doubt, soon go up in Chhatrasal, but the sharp spike in his status within these dusty, sweaty confines has been evident since the night he made the podium in Paris. His training sessions are watched by awestruck teenagers, he smiles often, speaks often, and moves around with a quiet swagger, casually acknowledging the boys who bow to him or request him for selfies. Back in 2021, he had watched Ravi grow into an overnight star in the very same hall, and had vowed to “do something to deserve that love.” “The magnitude of winning an Olympic medal truly hit home when I returned. So many functions, so much felicitation, going to Kaun Banega Crorepati...my life changed in an instant. People say I speak a lot more. Is it true? It may have something to do with the confidence that an Olympic medal brings,” he says, lounging in his plush ‘meeting room’ that his coach Lalit Kumar has carved within the stadium. The room has shelves that carry some of Aman’s trophies and upholstery that bear his name along with number 57, his weight category. And, of course, there are the ubiquitous Olympic rings -- on the cushions and on the windscreen of his new SUV. Aman took a three-month break post Paris, thanks to the ceaseless events that he had to attend. He resumed mat training in November and is back from a month-long stint at Japan’s Nippon Sports Science University, a trip he describes as an “eye opener.” The 21-year-old had some intense sessions with Hangzhou Asian Games bronze medallist Kaiki Yamaguchi and Paris gold medallist Rei Higuchi, and has returned mesmerised. “Their speed and techniques are amazing. I was beaten by a Japanese (Toshihiro Hasegawa) at the Asian Games and then again in Paris (Higuchi). So, I wanted to see their training methods,” he said. Mentored largely by Yamaguchi, Aman also had a rather revealing session with Higuchi who broke down their Paris semi-final that the Japanese had won 10-0 in a little over two minutes. “He told me I was opening my arms too much which allowed him to come in. Once in, he was able to attack my legs at will,” he said. Compared to strength and endurance, building speed requires significant tactical, technical, and training tweaks. While it’s common for Indian wrestlers to train for 4-6 rounds to enhance stamina, the Japanese, Aman noted, train in explosive 60-90 second rounds to get pacier. “Our methods are excellent for higher weights but the key to win in 57kg or 65 kg is speed. Aman is still better than a lot of Indians because he switched to mat (from mud wrestling) very early. His endurance is unbeatable; very rarely does he lose a bout that goes full six minutes. We are gradually making some changes to his training to improve his speed. We’ll introduce him to high-intensity interval training. There’s still time for LA,” Lalit said. For Aman, the countdown to LA has started. His room will soon be adorned with pictures of the gold medal for LA Games, like he did for Paris. “The expectations will increase manifold now. I want to continue in 57kg till LA and come home with a gold medal,” he said.
