hi hi! first amaka ask from technically yesterday. i am putting evan asks on pause because there are too many and i'm getting behind schedule.

day eight of tcw's 12 days of askmas--amaka as a cat [no spoilers]:
bro i don't know cat personalities, but she wouldn't be the hissy combative type. i imagine her as a maine coon but i don't know why. maybe like... she'd be shy and reserved. not very social, not approachable, but gentle. she wouldn't get defensive, but she wouldn't be super affectionate either. not unless she scared.
i feel like she'd be known for sitting by a windowsill and watching the rain.

The Blossom surrounded by Fire - Ch. 32 (Warrior AU- HBO MAX)
Long Zii had called me to his home before I could get settled in mine. I was escorted to their large dining room. Mai Ling stood behind him and Li Yong took his place a few feet in front of them. I bowed at Long Zii but did not speak.
âAmaka, I hear you had trouble in town today. There was a fight between the Fung Hai and Hop Wei.â he said. I wonder who had told him this. News can spread easily, but in regard to me, it was different. Li Yong was with me, so I knew he didnât inform Mai Ling or Long Zii. I nodded.
âYes sir.â I replied. He hummed and nodded.
âI heard Father Junâs son managed to get you out of harmâs way with the Fung Hai.â he said. How did he hear this? I didnât glance at Mai Ling, but I wouldnât be surprised if someone from the store told her and then she told her husband.
âYes sir. I was cornered in one of the stores by both Fung Hai who were trying to kill Young Jun. He talked the Fung Hai into letting me leave the store unharmed.â I told. Mai Ling nodded.
âThe Fung Hai wouldnât have hurt you due to our business with them.â she told. Long Zii nodded in agreement.
âDue to some past aggressions starting with us breaking the treaty, I want to ensure that we can still maintain peace after the boxing tournament that will take place next week. You are allowed on Fung Hai territory and the Hop Wei do not bother you when you must move through their territory. I would like you to visit either Father or Young Jun and thank them for looking out for you. Then I would like you to go to the fan tan tables and thank Zing for allowing you to leave the fight unscathed. I would like you to offer your services, only one time, to both tongs on behalf of the Long Zii. I know you have taken care of both tongs before joining my own and I am sure they would be grateful for your help.â he said. Both Mai Ling and Li Yong looked at the elder different emotions swimming in their eyes. I was used to being given orders like this, so I didnât let my look of disgust play on my face.
I leaned forward and bowed some.
âYes, Long Zii, I will do this.â I replied. He nodded, appeased.
âSooner rather than later.â he instructed. I nodded and turned and left the room. I decided not to go to them today. I needed to get my ingredients sorted and take inventory of what I needed.
The next morning, Li Yong escorted me through Chinatown. I was in one of my older dresses that I wore with Chao, my cloak tied around my body and my hood already on my head. He was quiet, his face distant.
âYou are upset.â I replied. He didnât look at me.
âI promised you that youâd never be a slave, and now our tong is whoring you out.â he said. I shook my head.
âI knew this tong was no different than the others, I knew this was a possibility-â
âThen why would you agree to join us?â he asked finally stopping to look at me. I looked around some trying to ensure no one was in real ear shot of us.
âBecause in this tong, there is a kindness in both you and Mai Ling, that I would never have gotten from the other tongs. What I have now, I wouldnât have with any other tong. I am very grateful to be with your tong, and I want to serve Long Zii just like you do.â I replied. He sighed and looked away before nodding.
âZing will not ask for healing services.â he said. I nodded.
âI know. But no matter what happens, my heart and my body will always be yours.â I replied lowly. He gave a gentle smile before nodding and we continued our walk. Once we were at the brothel, I saw Ah Toy standing at the front smiling as she saw us.
âAh just in time, Nellie should be here shortly.â she replied. Li Yong looked at me and dipped his head and I returned it before he turned and smoothly retreated back into the crowd.
âHow are you doing in the Long Zii tong?â she asked. I nodded.
âI made the right choice being in that tong.â I replied and she nodded.
After a few minutes, Nellie appeared with a smile for us both.
âGood morning to you both.â she said. The two women took each otherâs hands briefly before Nellie looked at me. âAre you ready Amaka?â
I nodded.
âYes.â I replied and the two of us were off. I walked a few inches behind her, the pond already in sight.
âSo Amaka, youâve been in Chinatown a while?â she asked. I nodded.
âYes.â I replied.
âWell, where are you from?â she asked leisurely. I wasnât sure if I felt comfortable answering her question, but I did.
âTennessee.â I replied. She looked at me stunned.
âYou are a long way from home.â She replied. I nodded.
âThank God.â I replied. The pond was alive and busy. Women in nice dresses were talking to each other, men were discussing the government and news. I noticed colored men in black suits and matching bowling hats with white gloves carrying boxes of shoes and clothes behind white women. Some of them glanced at me and I kept my head down.
âHow long have you and Ah Toy been friends?â I asked. She gave a coy grin.
âFor a while.â She replied.
âHow did you two meet?â I asked.
âWell, I was on a war path trying to liberate women who were forced to sell their bodies in brothels. I have a vineyard where I take them to be truly free. I have rescued many women from horrific brothels, but Ah Toy well she was different. She cares for her girls and never fought against any who wanted to leave.â she replied. âI showed her my vineyard and well our⊠friendship grew.â I nodded not asking anymore questions.
âTell me are you free, Amaka?â she asked suddenly. I winced some glancing at her. I could tell she was trying to figure me out, figure out how I came to be where I was now.
âI am free from the man who did this to me and many others.â I replied only gripping my hood. She looked at me with saddened eyes but nodded.
âI am happy you are free as well. If⊠you ever need support my vineyard is open to all women.â she said. I smiled and nodded.
âThank you.â I replied.
I could tell many eyes were starting to stare at us with distrust and Nellie caught this.
âAmaka, you may have to remove your hood for a bit. It seems people are getting suspicious⊠you are with me, so they probably see you as my maid.â she said lowly. I sighed and glanced around noticing more attention. So, I nodded, and gently removed my hood. Now I was fully exposed, and I hated it.
âNo one will bother you while you are with me⊠Iâll make sure of it.â Nellie said firmly as we walked. Men and women who passed us were immediately looking at me with wide eyes, whispering and pointing at my head. We needed to hurry. We made it to the familiar Lawrence Flower shop. I approached Lawrence himself and gave him the list. He nodded and turned and went back behind a door behind his counter.
A blonde woman approached Nellie and I kept my head down.
âMiss, where did you get this woman. Her ears are so different! Are there other coloreds who have pointy ears like hers! I would love to have some maid servants with ears like that!â she gushed. I looked at Nellie who looked at her stiffly faking pride.
âShe is the only one of her kind, born of an ancient royal African tribe. Only she will have ears like that. You canât find any other woman like this.â she said. I had to refrain from giving her a uncanny look. The woman gasped.
âA real royal tribe from Africa!â she asked. Lawrence appeared back and smiled.
âThank Ah Toy for her business for me.â he said handing me my goods. I nodded.
âThank you.â I replied.
âHow much are you paying her, I could double it!â the woman said. Nellie looked her up and down.
âYou canât afford her,â she said before glancing back at me, âCome.â
I nodded and followed her, leaving the woman whose mouth was agape clearly offended.
âAncient royal tribe?â I asked lowly and she chuckled.
âIf we are going to make up a good back story for you so that you arenât bothered, might as well be a good one.â she said. I couldnât help but chuckle and nod as we walked on. As we blended back into Chinatown, I looked at Nellie.
âThank you for going with me.â I replied. She shook her head.
âItâs my pleasure. Ah Toy means a great deal to me, and I could tell you mean a great deal to her too.â she said. Did I? I knew she trusted me because of Chao, but I didnât think she cared for me like she cared for her girls. But then again, in some way I am like her girls. Nellie took my hands and gave them a gentle squeeze before we separated. Now it was time to get another task out of the way. I made my way through Hop Wei territory, looking at the different stores and homes I passed until finally, I was standing in front of Hop Weiâs headquarters.
Two men in black suits approached with suspicion and I just nodded at them with a nervous smile.
âIs Young Jun around?â I asked. The two looked at each other before looking me over before motioning me inside. I followed and stood in the large atrium waiting. A familiar face walked passed.
âAmaka?â
I looked over and smiled.
âAh Sahm, hello.â I replied and he approached with a nod, behind him was a man in brown rags with short black hair and long beads down his chest.
âHi. What are you doing here?â he asked. I just smiled.
âJust running errands. I see you have a new onion.â I replied looking at the man who just looked at me wide eyed. Ah Sahm nodded.
âOh yeah, fresh off the boat. This is Long Ziiâs personal doctor, Amaka, she has the respect of Chinatown and the tongs. Amaka, this is Hong.â he introduced. I blushed at the introduction but nodded at Hong.
âHello.â I responded.
âYou are gorgeous!â he gushed. I slowly smiled at him and Ah Sahm nudged him quickly.
âOkay, donât let Bolo or Young Jun hear you say that. Ever.â he replied.
âDonât let me hear what?â
We all looked over to see Bolo approaching and when he saw me, he paused for a brief moment.Â
âAmaka.â he said. I gave a respectful smile.
âBolo.â I replied as he approached immediately before glaring at the other two.
âGet lost.â he commanded and Ah Sahm raised his hands in defense before backing away. Hong just waved at me.
âBye Amaka!â he said. I tilted my head at him.
âUh, bye Hong.â he said giving a goofy grin and leaving with Ah Sahm. That man sure is⊠different. Now I faced Bolo, and he moved closer to me, slowly closing the space between us.
âWhat are you doing here?â he asked.
âI came to see Young Jun on Long Ziiâs orders.â I replied. He looked me over.
âWhat orders?â he asked. I took a step back.
âThat is between Young Jun and I.â I replied. He scoffed.
âHe whoring you out to the Hop Wei or something? It was only a matter of time.â he said. I frowned.
âAnd if he did tell me to sleep with any Hop Wei member of my choosing?â I asked. Boloâs eyes flexed.
âWait heâs giving you a pass?â he asked, the hint of desperation in his voice. I scoffed.
âNo Bolo. I am just here to thank Young Jun for helping me. Thatâs all.â I replied. Bolo looked me over some, jaw tight as he looked away.
âIâve been thinking about you lately.â he said. I glanced at him looking him over.
âAnd what exactly have you been thinking about related to me?â I asked. He takes my hand and steps closer, his face suddenly pressed into the side of my head. I tensed not expecting such an action as anyone could catch him.
âI miss you.â he said into my ear, his hot breath making me shiver.
âYou miss fucking me.â I said.
âI do. I also miss just talking with you.â he said. I feel his teeth suddenly bite on the tip of my ear and I gasp taking a step from his hold.
âBolo stop it. Like I said I am not your whore.â I said lowly.
âI never saw you as a whore. I- Look I canât explain it, but everything about you calls to me.â he said.
âWe will talk about this another time.â I said.
âWhen is that time?â he asked aggressively. However he took a step back as Young Jun walked down the hall, a big smile spreading over his face as he sees me.
âWow pray for some good sticky and God delivers!â he said, and I gave him a look as he approached with a few men behind him. âAmaka, I heard you were looking for me.â
I straightened up and nodded.
âYes, Young Jun. I just wanted to come and thank you for defending me yesterday. You didnât have to, but you did. Long Zii heard what you did and so he has permitted me to offer you a onetime medical service. If you or your men are ever in a scrap and you want my help, you need only ask.â I replied. He bit his lower hip rolling his eyes over me.
âA onetime service huh, I would much rather have you perform a different kind of service.â he said. I chuckled some.
âCraving more from our first time I see.â I replied.
âOh, so much! Good pussy is hard to come by and you are very much at the top of my list of women I love fucking.â he said. My eyes flexed at how blunt he was.
âWell, I cannot speak to that type of service, but if you ever need me, you have me for one service.â I said. He nodded slowly.
âIâll keep that in mind.â he said with a purr. I bowed and smiled before glancing up at Bolo and turning from them. âHey, you gonna be at that boxing tournament coming up?â I looked at him and nodded.
âYes, are you?â I asked. He nodded.
âOf course, gotta show you Long Zii cunts whose top dog around here.â he said. I grinned with amusement.
âThen I guess Iâll see you there.â I purred as I looked between both he and Bolo and left the building. I finally let out a sigh of relief happy to be out of there.
âOne down, one to go.â I said.

With Christmas and New Yearâs Day now passed, many immigrants to the United States are filled with memories of home â whether they could travel there in person or not.
The holidays bring forth beautiful memories for those who now live and work far from the places they were raised and where they still have extended family.
Amaka Ibekwe, a nurse practitioner who works at a family practice clinic in Houston, is one of them. The Christmas and New Year holidays bring back found memories of her childhood years in Nigeria.
Christmas and New Year, which for many people are tied together, always are a joyful celebration in Nigeria. âWhen I came over to America in 2001, it was a culture shock for me because I did not see the pomp and pageantry associated with (the season) in Nigeria. It was more like a family locking themselves in, decorating their outside. There was not much interaction with neighbors or people around you except if you had family.
âBut in Nigeria it was more like Thanksgiving. We celebrated everything. We had food, clothing but we wanted family; we wanted to help people that did not have anything to eat but itâs not the same in America,â she recalled.
âIt is always better to celebrate Christmas and New Year in Nigeria. Itâs not the same experience over here.â

Yes, economically it could affect the government, but we are so used to it that we donât know if it really affects us. From the 20th, almost all the offices are closed but in America itâs more of just buying gifts showing you care for people once a year. In Nigeria, we prepare for it for a week or two and celebrate it for more than two weeks but here is different.â

A story for Xichen and Mingjue, in another time and another place.
The Beifeng, the mighty empire of the north, invaded more than a year ago, moving inexorably south and east.
In order to buy peace, the chief of the Lan clan has given the Beifeng warlord a gift, his second oldest son in marriage. However, when Xichen finds out he makes a plan.
He, too, can give a gift to the Beifeng warlord, and he will not regret it.

Chapter 14: Now
Xichen pulls the hood of his fur-lined coat over his head before tucking an arm behind his back and following Qingyang out into the snow. He is used to the snow, but winter on the flat land is very different than it had been on the mountain, Xichen thinks. It was not as cold here, but the shearing wind had the bite of dragons in it, and the snow piled high in drifts around the tents. Xichen would not have gone out into this weather at all, but Qingyang had asked for his help. Fortunately, they donât have far to go.
Even from twenty paces, Xichen can hear the raised voices, and he stifles a smile. Qingyang, on the other hand, grimaces and hunches her shoulders. She hates stepping between two tigers.
âYou donât reduce pay in winter,â Huaisang yells. âThat doesnât make any sense!â
âBut why would you pay your army more during an armistice in winter? You feed them, you clothe them. They are idle, Oringa'anhu Ikira, and you are not even encouraging them to be productive.â
Huaisang slams his hand down on a table, and Xichen raises his eyebrows. In the seven months heâs lived with the Ikarahu, heâs never seen Huaisang angry, although, he isnât sure he is seeing him angry now. There is a sparkle in his eyes that does not speak of anger.
âThey are riding formations, they are training in this bitter cold, and they are existing in this forsaken country. They have more than earned their pay.â
Guangyao rolls his eyes, brandishing a leather-bound account book. âThen pay the cavalry extra, but do not pay everyone extra. You will bleed your coffers dry before springtime.â
âIf I only raise the cavalryâs pay, how will I explain that to the archers who protect the skies or the foot soldiers who guard their flanks? Or the people who fletch arrows, feed the horses, check their coats, pick their feet, watch for colic, oil their saddles? You pay the soldiers to protect the cavalry, the hostlers to care for the cavalry, and you pay the cavalry to win wars. You may be the Jin clan heir, but apparently, you donât know the first thing about maintaining a successful army.â
Xichen winces. There are a few things Guangyao is likely to be genuinely offended by, and Huaisang is tiptoeing along an unkind path.
âAnati, Guangyao, will you join us for lunch?â he asks, and the two men look at him with identically aggravated expressions as though they had not noticed he was there.
It is interesting to see them both turn into different people; Huaisangâs expression melts into mirth and Guangyaoâs shifts to solicitude.
âAhora'ipa, did you make food? You know the way to my heart,â Huaisang is always cheerful about food.
Xichen opens the basket he is carrying and takes out the tureen of hot soup.
âOf course I did not make it. Thankfully, you pay your kitchens well,â he teases, smiling at Guangyao, who smiles back ruefully, just the corners of his mouth tipping up, but still revealing the deep dimples that always make him seem younger.
Huaisang is gracious in his triumph, and serves out four bowls of meaty soup at the table in Guangyaoâs tent, pushing aside a stack of account ledgers. It is a smaller living space than Xichenâs, more sparsely appointed, yet somehow messier and more inhabited. Books sit open on the bed, and there are papers in piles on every flat surface, some scribbled on, some not. It is one of the contradictions of this man Xichen finds fascinating, that he can be so meticulous in his person, but so disorderly in his space.
âHuaisang, we are bribing you with lunch. I finished the drawings you requested, and if you want changes, I will need to know now,â Qingyang informs him, and Huaisang nods, slurping soup enthusiastically. âAnd Xichen is here to teach the guqin, so you will need to leave Guangyao alone.â
It had been clear from the beginning that Huaisangâs position in the Ikarahu command was more than merely symbolic, but he usually preferred to hide his intelligence behind a mask of frivolity, and Xichen let him pretend. He tried not to notice the piercing way he watched Guangyao when he thought no one was looking, the soldiers in dark clothes that sometimes came with Huaisang to retrieve Mingjue in the night, or, most damning, Qingyangâs respect for him.
The only time Xichen had seen him reveal what lurked beneath his lighthearted demeanor had been that drunken night, and Huaisang has not said anything about his older sister since then. Xichen hasnât asked, but the sorrowful words sit at the front of his mind every day.
She is lost to us forever. What else should we do?
Since Guangyao has been here, though, it has changed something in Huaisang, as though he was shooting arrows into the sky before and is now staring at a target. His clever mind has sharpened in a way that could either be productive or disastrous, and Xichen isnât sure which way he will land.
The voice in the doorway surprises Xichen out of his thoughts, and he is vaguely aware that Guangyao, sitting next to him, straightens his back slightly.
âEdas ahora, I have a gift for you!â
Mingjue strides over to Xichen and kisses him enthusiastically, despite Huaisangâs dramatic groan.
âWill you come see?â he asks, and Xichen pretends to hesitate.
âOutside? In the snow? Ipiraâorhew Ikira, you are too cruel.â
Mingjue grins, and Xichen has to fold his hands together to keep from touching his face. âI am. Very. I will prove it later. But first, gift.â
Xichen laughs and gets up. âI resent being threatened, Ipiraâorhew Ikira. Perhaps I will be cruel later.â
âI hate you both,â Huaisang grumbles, but he follows them, his curiosity greater than his distaste for being a younger brother.
âMingjue.â Xichen stares blankly at the shape in the snow, his gift for intelligent languageâor any intelligent thought at allâfailing. âItâs a horse.â
It was, in fact, a beautiful horse, dark grey with a pattern of light speckles dappling its coat. It looks strong and sturdy, and there is a curious glint in its eyes. The horse pokes Xichen in the chest and huffs a breath of visible air at him, a lock of black mane falling between its ears.
âOh, another horse,â Huaisang says dryly. âItâs too cold to look at another horse.â He disappears back inside the tent, narrowly avoiding the snow Mingjue throws at him.
âTa odinga is Liebing,â Mingjue tells Xichen, his excitement coming out in a confusing mix of Orera and Yuyan. âShe looks like a cloud. Et irakas ta dakia. She moves well, ani? Mares are better than stallions in war, Xichen. You...hm...em ekos eko em amaka.â
If he does not stop him, Mingjue will tell him every detail of this horse in two languages, so Xichen leans against him and snuggles an arm around his waist. âI am already not disappointed.â
âShe is a galau,â Mingjue says proudly, although Xichen doesnât know what that means. Mingjue notices Xichenâs puzzled look and explains, âShe is a wind horse of our mountains and came when I called.â
He whistles to demonstrate, and the mare perks up her ears, swinging her head to him and chuffing as though in answer. Xichen is appropriately awed. The Ikarahu value all horses, but Xichen hadnât realized that more than only Mingjueâs beautiful black mare would answer his command. He wonders if it is magic or training or some other ingrained horse understanding.
âShe is beautiful, ahoraho. Tiras mau,â Xichen says, and tips his head to be kissed. âYes, she is marvelous. Wherever did you acquire this magnificent creature?â Guangyao asks from behind them, polite, but with an unusual edge of sarcasm.
Guangyao often uses his largest words around Mingjue, but Mingjue always seems to think Guangyaoâs attempts to confuse him are amusing. Xichen isnât sure if Guangyao does it in spite of Mingjueâs reaction or because of it.
As always, Mingjue laughs, a deep belly-driven chortle, grinning at Guangyao. âHorses can be found anywhere, Yao-ti.â Xichen closes his eyes and does not laugh as he realizes why the horse has a Yuyan name. âAhoraho, did you steal this horse?â
Mingjue widens his eyes and tries to look as innocent as a warlord in armor can look. âI do not know this word, âsteal.â I will need to ask anati.â
They both turn at the snorting laughter from behind them. Even Guangyao seems startled by his outburst, because he breaks off as soon as they look at him.
âExcuse me. I must apologize to Oringa'anhu Ikira. His hostlers are worth every penny if they can keep up with Chifeng-Zunâs capacity for finding horses wherever he looks.â Guangyao looks innocent, but there are sudden teeth in his words Xichen doesnât fully understand. He is not quite angry, not quite longing, but something sardonic in between.
Not for the first time, Xichen wonders who Jin Guangyao really is.

Amaka Tsubaki had extremely long purple hair that reached slightly lower than her waist, a part of her hair was tied up by a dark blue hair accessory in the middle. Her blue eyes could possibly stare into ones soul easily.
As a girl who is 16, she is definitely tall, having the height of 172cm, but was thin for her size. Even though she may look petite, but the aura she gives out is quite intimidating.
âAmaka Tsubaki, hero name Snowdrop! Younger sister of the Singing Hero Lavender!! Quirk Niflheim! It grants her the authority of the the Goddess Hel from Norse Mythology! Currently at the number 20 spot of the hero rankings in Japan! Led her lineage during the darkest hours just at the age of 6! Earned the Provisional License at the age of 8, the National License at 10 and the absolutely rare International License at 12! She is also the winner of the last two U.A. Sports Festivals that she had competed in!!âIzuku rambled continuously, leaving even Tsubaki speechless.
As he finally finished, Izuku cake to a realisation that of what he just did and his face immediately went red before he was a literal mess.

Hearing his name, the half-and-half boy looked up.

âYour costumes that you had designed and accord to your quirk reports!â

âBy the way, Miyu,â Tsubaki called out, catching the girlâs attention. âYou can take your costume with you whenever you need to intern, okay?â
Miyu went silent for a few moments before her expression radiated a happy vibe. Just the thought of able to wear her new costume and show it to her mentor was extremely appealing to her.

Izuku and Katsuki, being the few people in the room understanding what it means remained silent. With the display of how she used her quirk yesterday, they truly understood why Miyu had passed the Provisional License Exam.
The girl that they had known for their entire life has grown, after all.

Everyone was in their costumes, which are different in colour, shape and design.
âNot bad, everyone, you all look really cool!â
As Izuku had also arrived with the jumpsuit that his mother bought him, All Might realised that they were one person short.

Running footsteps coming from the gate were heard, making everyone turn around to see who it is.
Of course, it was none other than Kamikaze Miyuki in her new costume.
Her costume was like a normal sailor uniform, except for the fact that the dark purple top was hoodie-like, with its strings shaped as USB cables at the end. A white folded skirt, white stockings which had thigh bags and a pair of black and purple trainers.
Overall, comparing to her classmates, her outfit was on par with Jirou Kyouka and Kaminari Denkiâs: it looks like normal clothing.
âMiyu-chanâŠYour costume is more normal than I thought it would beâŠâIzuku trailed as he looked at her costume entirely.
âW-Whatâs important is the functionality, functionality, I say!!âMiyu protested in embarrassment.
True that it was more fashionable than her former costume, but it wasnât something that looked outstanding either. But to Miyu, the functions of her clothing are the most important.
âStockings?! Then that must meanâŠâMineta, the classâs local pervert muttered as he tried to squat down to see under Miyuâs skirt.
But before he could even do that, a gloved hand grabbed him on the head and stopped him from moving.
Slightly irritated for being stopped from his goal, Mineta turned to see who it was.
And to his demise, it was none other than Bakugou Katsuki who clearly had the face of âinstant murderâ, Mineta was pretty sure that he was doomed.
The very aura that Katsuki was admitting made his surrounding classmates shiver in fear.

Suddenly, the maleâs murder aura was gone, leaving Mineta at a confused state.
But sadly, it was just for a second.

With that, Mineta Minoru was sent flying across Ground Beta as his screams were slowly unheard.

Witnessing the rage of the explosive male, everyone in Class 1-A mentally agreed not to bring up what just happened.
âWhatâs with the ruckus? Why arenât you all starting already?â Tsubaki asked as she walked towards the class.
Izuku and everyone else turned to see her, and to their delight, their senpai was in her iconic costume as well.
Tsubaki, known by her hero name Snowdropâs costume was very easy to recognise, due to the fact she was one of the very few heroes who had a light gothic style costume. It was a dark blue dress, with a chiffon tie which had a a silver lined brooch with a blue gemstone on it, a black belt wrapped around her just below her chest, even though her dress may seem long, itâs actually only reached her thighs barely, the dress was actually more like a vest, as she wears a long-sleeved black dress-shirt. She had black leggings and a pair of short black high-heel boots.
Her costume was specially designed by the gothic lolita brand that she solely models for, MIRROR, compared to normal gothic lolita clothing, it is rather dull, but it was meant to be lightweight and simple, in order to suit Tsubakiâs fighting style.
Izuku then suddenly realised that something was missing.
âSenpai, whereâs your cape?â
âAh, that, I left it behind since Iâm just going to be a spectator.âTsubaki replied as she told her juniors what happened to her black cape.
âAlright then, shall we begin, youngsters?!â

âSo itâs time for battle training!âAll Might began.
âIâm sorry, Sensei,âIida Tenya interrupted as he raised his hand.
âThis is the Entrance Exam Arena, does that mean that weâre going to have another city battle practice?â
âNope, our curriculum takes two steps ahead from that.âthe number 1 hero replied as he raised two of his fingers.
âBattles with villains are usually witnessed outdoors, but according to certain studies, the rate of villains appearing in indoors is much more higher.â
âImprisonment, house arrest, underground trading. This society filled with heroesâŠâ
âTrue villains hide themselves in the dark.â
âAfter this, you will all split up into hero and villain teams, and will commence 2 vs 2 indoor battle simulations!â
âWithout basic training?âTsuyu asked.
âThis is in order to understand the basics by performing it!â
âBut this time, you are not facing robots that you can just destroy-â
âHow will we decide the winner?âMomo asked.
âCan we hit people?âKatsuki asked, earning a questioning look from Denki.
âWill the last place will be expelled like Aizawa-sensei?âOchaco added.
âAnd how should we decide the pairs?âTenya asked.
âIsnât this cape great?âYuuga questioned as he showed off his cape.
âShoutoku Taiji....âAll Might muttered as he slightly trembled.
*It is said that Prince Shoutoku could listen to 36 people talking at once, this is usually used when there are a bunch of people talking to the same person at once.
âAll Might-san, Iâll help you explain.âTsubaki offered.
âThe setting is that the villains had hidden a nuclear weapon somewhere in the building, and that the heroes need to deal with the problem.â
âThe heroes have to either catch the villains or recover the nuclear weapon in limited time, while the villains have to protect the weapon until time is up or restrain the heroes.â
âThe setting is really American style!âIzuku exclaimed.
âAnd, weâre going to decide the pairs and face-offs by drawing lots!â All Might declared as he showed the class the box which had the lots inside.
âIsnât that a bit too random?âTenya asked.
âPros always have to teamup with heroes from other agencies on a whim, so itâs not rare at all!âIzuku explained.
âI see, so you have a reason for this... I apologise for being rude!âTenya apologised.
âDonât worry about it!â
âNow, letâs start by picking the pairs.âTsubaki announced as she began drawing the lots.

With the passionate greeting, Miyu let out a heartwarming smile.

âAlright, so the first matchup is...âAll Might began as he pulled out a ball from each pf the two boxes. âThese two groups!!â
âA Team are heroes, while D Team are villains! Everybody else head to the monitor room!â

âBasically what Iâm here for is to give more grounded advice to you guys since Iâm more close to your age. As well as providing mental support.âTsubaki explained

âYou guys are still kids after all, adolescence hits hard, you know?â

âAnyways, I think that this matchup is rather interesting, what do you think, Miyu, you know Midoriya and Bakugou since you were kids, right?â

âWell, I believe that youâre talking about the chemistry between the two of them, right?â

âIzu-niiâs quirk is too destructive, and too dangerous to use, due to the fact in order to not hurt himself, he never really did used his quirk, nor did he told much people about it, so he was thought as quirkless⊠And wellâŠâ
âKatsuki is thought as a prodigy, having a great quirk and such, so everybody told him that he was strong⊠Katsuki has changed after he had his quirk⊠And wellâŠSince Izu-nii is using his quirk because he really wanted to become a heroâŠKatsuki is mad at him for hurting himself for his idealsâŠâ
âTheir relationship went for the worse.âMiyu concluded.
âThank you Young Miyuki, you have my thanks!â All Might thought as he remembered messaging Miyu to come up with a convincible story to cover up Izukuâs sudden quirk.
âWith the proclaim of their childhood friend, things would stay safe, huhâŠâTsubaki thought as she sighed.
âI see, so it makes sense now.âTsubaki concluded. Â
âBakugou is not the type of person who will admit his true feelings because he was seen as a strong figure, he didnât want to break that, so he decided to use a tougher way to tell Midoriya to give upâŠâ
âSo this fight is because of one sideâs feelings?âEijiro asked curiously.
âNo, itâs both-sided.âTsubaki countered immediately as she stared at the screen. âMidoriya is frustrated that he was born with such a quirk, and envies Bakugou to able to control his quirk, yet he tried to stop him from persuading his dream even when he had made his resolve⊠Is there something more frustrating than that?â

With a bunch of explosions, a massive punch that made a gigantic hole in the building, a rubble meteor strike, a swollen and a burnt hand and some puking, the Hero Team, aka Midoriya Izuku and Uraraka Ochacoâs win.
âTo the infirmary~âOne of the robots carrying Izuku announced.
âI know~âthe other robot replied as the robots moved Izuku out of the building.
There stood Bakugou Katsuki, still petrified at the fact that he had lost, not to mention Deku out of all people.
Katsuki was trembling, as if about to go insane at any given moment.
Yet his trembling stopped, when a hand was placed on his shoulder.
âBakugou, calm down, your breathing was speeding up back there.â
It was Tsubaki, who looked at him with a frown.
âI know that itâs frustrating, but calm downâŠâ
âThis is the first time that you have lost at something, right?â

Stunned, the boy had no idea how his senior knew about that, no, by logic, nobody could possibly know.
âYou were trembling as if your entire world has collapsed, it was easy to tell. With a quirk like yours, the people around you of course will admire you, you were called strong, you never lost, but you just couldnât take it that Midoriya had just beat you, someone you saw as a weakling.â
âShut up!! And why the hell do you know about-â
âThe Amaka Family is an information gathering organisation, just by oneâs actions, I can practically tell what theyâre thinking about, I have seen a lot after all.â

Two hands were raised, Momo and Miyu respectively.

âThat is because Iida-san was the one who had performed according to the setting.â
âBakugou-sanâs actionsâŠHis reason of fighting is because of personal matters. Also, as Sensei had said before, using large-range attacks in indoors is foolish.â
âThe same goes for Midoriya-san, looking from his wounds, I would say that his plan was of no use.â
âUraraka-san had lose focus in the middle, also, the last attack was too reckless, if the item was really a nuclear weapon, then there is no way that one can take such dangerous actions.â
âDue to the fact of taking consideration of the nuclear weapon, that is the reason why Iida-san was a step too late.â
âThe Hero Teamâs victory can be said as something that is naively born from a training, a victory that is not realistic.â

âTrue that what the Hero Team has done was not ideal for the Hero society, but they did play by the rules, and came up with that plan in a short time, so changing their way of thinking is actually enough.â

âIida, try to focus on your objective and priorities even more, so that you wonât hesitate as much.â

âWe get to know this place longer than them, and they have to react immediately without much information given to them.â
âSure, we canât use the element of surprise since Shoji-kun is on their team, but there are still ways that we can win.â

âTodoroki-kun has his left side frozen up, by normal standards, we can tell that he isnât planning on using his fire quirk...And judging by his personality, he would most likely finish this training in the most efficient way...âMiyu concluded as she opened the door to the room that contained the fake weapon.
âToru-chan, I want you to believe in my plan, no, in me...â
âMind if you put the fate of our victory in my hands?âMiyu asked with nothing but confidence in her eyes.

âYeah!â Toru answered as she clenched her gloves.
âThank you... Well then...âMiyu trailed as she began to pull down the zipper on the back of her top.
âW-Wait!! Miyu-chan, what are you doing??!!â

âSero, borrow some of your tape for me.â Tsubaki requested her underclassmen.
âUh, sure.â
As the boy placed the tape on his senpaiâs hand, Tsubaki slapped it onto Minetaâs eyes.
âM-My eyes!!!!!!â
âWithout any mercy...â Everybody else in the room thought as they saw their senpaiâs bold and straightforward actions.
âB-But uh...Why is Miyu-chan taking off her clothes...?â Denki asked as he was literally freaking out.
Katsuki stared at the monitor for a few moments, before gasping in realisation at what Miyu was planning.
âCould she be...â

âGroup 2, battle training, start!!â
Mezo used his dupli-arms to check the building and the two oppoenets inside, after a few seconds, one of his arms turned into a mouth.
âHmm...It seems that the both of them are in the same room in the fourth floor... Could it be possible that they have given up on surprise attacks and decided to fight us when we reach the room with the weapon?â
âFor your own safety, go outside.âShoto demanded.
âIâm sure that our opponents tend to fight a defensive battle...â
Shoto continued as he activated his quirk.
âBut it doesnât matter to me.â
With that, Todoroki Shoto froze the entire building and Shoji Mezo could only watch at awe as it happened.

âI-Itâs so cold...â
Everyone in the monitor room was shivering due to the cold.
Well, that is except for Amaka Tsubaki and Bakugou Katsuki.
âAra, Shoto got stronger than the last time I saw him... I guess he took my advice since weâre both ice-based...âTsubaki trailed as Katsuki trembled in fear.
âBut he seemed like he didnât take my other advice...â

Shoto slowly walked towards the room in the fourth floor, expecting to see the two girls frozen in place due to his ice.
But they werenât.
There stood the fake nuclear weapon alone.
Knowing that there was no way that they werenât here unless his ice attack had failed, Shoto was on guard immediately.
But it was too late.
Without any warning, Shoto could suddenly feel some sort of string tightening on his body, immobilising him as well as lifting him up away from the ground.
âHissatsu! Kumo no Su!!!â

âA wire?! Where did this came from?!â
âHey Todoroki-kun, did you know, Toru-chan can control light refractions... She was capable of making the wires reflect the light from the windows so that you couldnât see them.âMiyu revealed as she hold tight onto the kunais connected to the two ends of her wire.
âH-How did you two escape my ice...? Why can the two of you opperate as if the cold temperature isn't bothering you...?âShoto questioned as he struggled to turn his head to look at Miyu, before realising the answer as he did.
âEven though that Shoji-kun was capable of gathering information such as our positions...He won't be able to know about the detailed information of something that was here...âMiyu began.
âYou know? I get cold easily, which is the reason why when I desgined my costume, I specifically asked it to be made in cold-resistant material!! Not to mention that the sweater, shorts and stockings are also made of it!!â
âTo think that you were wearing shorts under a skirt!!âToru exclaimed, making Shoto realise that Miyu had given the invisible girl her top and skirt.
âI had to add it, otherwise Awata-san would flip out...âMiyu mumbled to herself as she remebered back when she was desiging her costume, Bubble Girl told her that there will be perverts who would look at her panties if she didnât wear shorts while not wearing leggings.
â...This wire is made out of metal, right? Then all I have to do is to use my heat to-âShoto began was cut off.
âThat will be impossible, after all, this wire...â
âIs made of hafnium carbide!!â

âI wouldnât do that if I were you...âMiyu cut in as she aimed her right hand towards Shoto with a coin on her hand as she stood almost next to Shoto.
âYou know, my railgun... I donât have to flick it up into the air to use it.â
âIn such a close distance, just flicking it towards you is enough...â
âPlease donât forget that my railgun is a military weapon that causes damage with just pure speed...âMiyu reminded.
âYour ice and my railgun...Which one do you think is faster...?â

After tying Shoto up in the restraint tape, Miyu let out a sigh of relief.
âToru-chan, then proceed according to plan.â
âGot it! Leave it to me~â
With that, the invisible girl left the room, leaving the two alone in the room.
âTsubaki-senpai...âMiyu began as she asked her senpai through the  intercom earpiece.
âDo you mind turning off the recieving of my and Todoroki-kun's earpiece? There is something that I would like to talk to him in private.â
âAh, no problem, just give me the sign when you finish.â

âWE HAVE CAUGHT TODOROKI-KUN!!!IF YOU WANT TO WIN THIS PRACTICE, THEN COME RECOVER THE WEAPON YOURSELF!!!â
With that, Toru immediately left.
âTodoroki went down? Or this is just a bluff to seperate us...? Itâs best to check...âMezo thought as he used his dupli-arms.
â!? I canât...? Todorokiâs ice has lowered my perceptiveness...â
âIâm running out of time, I need to at least give it a shot!â

Once Mezo walked towards the center room of the fourth floor, he suddenly heard rush footsteps coming from his right side.
Knowing that he had to fight, Mezo leaped towards the target as well.
It was Miyu who had her wire in her hands, holding it with her kunais, but before Mezo could hit her with one of his arms, Miyu accelerated her speed, avoiding his consecutive attacks by speeding forward and backward of him.
Miyu then saw an opening, then kicked him with all her strength, catching him off-guard.
Before Mezo could barely grasp what was happening, Miyu rushed towards him once again, landing three solid high-speed mid-air kicks before sending him flying across the corridor.
Just when he was about to hit the ground, Miyu somehow manage to appeared behind him and kicking back to where he once was.
Confused and overwhelmed, Mezo could only try to recompose himself.
Highlight on the word try.
Just before he was about to catch his breathe, Miyu lunged forward.
âSorry about this!!âShe apologised, before thrusting one of her kunai into one of Mezoâs duplicated arms.
âKuh!!âGrunting in pain as his arm began to bleed, breaking his composure once again.
Miyu immediately leaped into the air and threw her wire over one of the pipes on the ceiling before catching it.
She pulled her wire with both of her hands, lifting Mezo up into the air.
As Mezo hit the ceiling, Miyu continued to fling her wire around, f;inging Mezo into different surfaces of the corridor.

âIsnât that too reckless?!â
âComparing to what Midoriya did eariler, no, Miyu took advantage of the buildingâs architecture, while not destroying the building in a scale that would possibly harm the nuclear weapon, so itâs fine.âTsubaki replied.
âBut that mid-air three consecutive kick back there...That was impressive...â
âMiyuâs wrist power isnât strong, so sheâs putting her speed as an advantage and the different surfaces to do recoil damage... This would possibly be their only way to defeat a giant that is capable of gripping 540 kg...â

As Miyu could feel that her hands were getting extremely tired after approximately ten seconds, she called out.
âNow, Toru-chan!!â
On command, the invisible girl appeared as she wrapped the restraint tape around Mezo.
âGot you!!â
âHnngh...â
âEven if you know, if your body canât react fast enough, then it will be pointless!â
âThe Villain Team has reached their requirements!!Thus, it is the Villain Teamâs winnnnnnn!!!!!â All Might announced.
âWe did it, Toru-chan!!âMiyu exclaimed as she high-fived the invisible girl.
âItâs all thanks to your plan, Miyu-chan!!â
âNo, itâs becuase you trusted me, Toru-chan!â
âIâll give your clothes back later!â

After crying for a bit due to exclaiming at Deku about his frustrations, and All Mightâs somehow unnecessary care, Katsuki made his way out of the school gate.
âAra, so youâre leaving already... Does that mean that youâre not going to challenge me?â
Katsuki sighed in annoyance as he looked at his left.
âWhat do you want, senpai?â
Smirking, Tsubaki straighten herself from lying against the gate.
âNothing, I was just wondering about something...â
âDo you like Kamikaze Miyuki?â
âW-What the hell has to do with you?!â
âSo youâre not denying it, huh...?â

âAllow me to say this once... If youâre really aiming to become the strongest, then I donât belive that you have the time for love...â

âBy the way... Your costume was really cool and functional!! To think that your costume allows you to stregthen your quirk... Too bad I canât stregthen my quirk... Or should I request another support item that can allow me to use my quirk longer...?â
Fuming at the fact that Miyu called him cool, Katsuki avoided looking at the girl.
âHey Katsuki, are you still worried about what senpai said...?â
Ah, that worried face of hers...
âAs if, Iâm going to find my reason soon enough!â
âYeah, I believe so!â
âLet us work even more harder so that the three of us can become the strongest heroes, Katsuki!!â

Almeida Associate Director Robert Icke has adapted and directed Mary Stuart, Uncle Vanya, Oresteia (also West End; won the Critics' Circle and Evening Standard Awards for Best Director) and the multi-award winning 1984 with Duncan Macmillan (also West End as well as playing several UK and international tours) at the Almeida. His work as a director includes The Fever at The May Fair Hotel, Mr Burns at the Almeida, Boys and Romeo and Juliet for Headlong. He made his National Theatre debut directing The Red Barn, at the Lyttelton Theatre in October 2016.

Johnny Fox Comedy review: 200mph jokes Rhys James performs a comedy set like he's got somewhere else to be. He sprints through jokes, barely coming up for air, and leaving us wondering whether he's getting paid by the word. While he got some fantastic laughs, there were also some periods when the crowd went quiet; especially during his section on millennials. James's self-deprecating style and the way he ties the entire show together neatly at the end is impressive, and he's clearly talented. Dremo takes the first step to unlocking his potentials on ''Codename Vol 1 EP''.
Dremo makes his neophyte presence on the scene with his debut body of work, ''Codename Vol 1''.
After three years following his arrival on the scene and developing his talents as a member of Davido's DMW label, 2018 has been described as the year when Davido finally allows his boys explore and leading the pack is Dremo.
Dremo has been quite impressive with his singles and features on some of the group songs as he offers an energetic and hungry vigour every time he jumps on a verse.
Scoring occasional hit songs is great, delivering a well padded sixteen stuck in between the heavy presence of Davido's voice is safe, but can he do it all on his own project, where he is open to criticisms and intense scrutiny based on the talent his early years projected?
Those are the questions that Dremo seeks to answer on this 9 track body of work, ''Codename Vol I''.
The project is largely kept in-house with guests and producers coming from his DMW family.
Codename kicks off with 'Nobody', the 6 am music with the instrumentals suppressed to allow Dremo breathe.
The first few minutes sees him do justice to this as he takes us through the journey of his life, tapping into 2face's 'Nobody talks about you' line for inspiration, detailing how he got signed to DMW.
''OBO changed my life, me and the Mayor of Lagos got signed the same night'', he declares, while taking aimless shots as people he perceives are talking about him.
This is followed by 'Bigger Meat', a song that aims to sell and not to please.
'Faya' is the Dremo we have come to know as he gets the party started with this tune that has influences from both identified and yet to be discovered roots.
This joint is heavy and 'I go fire you' is his warriors chant which can be interpreted in several ways, while his ability to adapt his flow to the flipped beat adds a nice touch to this.
After three tracks all to himself, Dremo allows the guests into his house with his label boss, Davido taking the lead on the Speroach produced 'Kpa', now Dremo is singing and not sure if this is tied to the same producer or Davido's hook, but this sounds like a spin-off Davido's hit song, 'Assurance', as they demand you go down for the 'Kpa'.
Simply put, 'Kpa' is more basic than exciting, but on 'Dapada' with Mayorkun is where he finds a better chemistry, again taking inspiration from D'Prince's 'Take Banana', Mayorkun displays his brilliance when it comes to scoring a commercial sing along, while Dremo's flow here goes well with the mood.
Simi is the outsider who crashes the party on 'Hey Ma', Dremo is singing and rapping with Simi's vocals splashed across his verses, while her verse lacks the energy to brighten the song, this is another joint that somehow feels like it is elements short of something special.
'Breezy' is the perfect welcome back joint made for DMW's latest signee, Sinzu to do rap the way only he can and not even Dremo's failed trap impression at the start could dim his shine.
Alongside the impressively gifted Peruzzi, who has brought his talent to glare in a number of features including the newest hit single, 'Amaka' by 2face, the duo attempt to turn 'Unbelivas' to believers with this love joint produced by Fresh VDM.
'Fan of my Fans' is his sign out joke, but it fails to pack enough punch-line to leave the hall rolling after his exit, as the lines are quite corny on this.
It is safe to say that Dremo will not be opening a new chapter in the history of Nigerian rap like many predicted when he debuted with his earlier singles, 'Fela' and 'Ojere', but he manages to keep his presence large enough with his delivery and flow.
 The ''Codename, Vol 1 EP" is a decent introduction to a hungry artist that has all the raw talent to succeed, the beats are good, but nothing special, the collaborations work and enhances his appeal.
It does not offer the best lyrics you'll ever hear or ground-breaking music that will make you pen him down on your list of next rated, but he understands his music and his target audience.
His raw flow is also quite visible and backed by a wheel oiled machinery in DMW, Dremo will be here for a while, but will his name be first on the list few years down the line? We wait to see.

good morning plebeians.
today i woke up with a burning desire to wake up and write, but i am still sleepy. writer brain won and now we are here.
anyhow! welcome to day eight of thecomfywriterâs 12 days of askmas! today is amaka day! if you donât know who amaka is, amaka is the main character from tis. ground rules are the same as alwaysâfrom 12:00am EST to 11:59pm EST, you can submit as many asks pertaining to amaka or her plot line as youâd like, so long as it is specific.
i still have over a dozen asks from evan day to answer, but iâve decided to be more flexible with the answering schedule since i have come to accept that i will yamble for every post đ
that being said, iâm going to try and revert back to the schedule: iâm honestly not sure how much intrigue amaka will have, so we will see.
apart from that, i have a lot of writing i want to get done today. yesterday, i wrote approximately 5k words? i donât remember the exact number right now, but along those lines. i wanna write that much if not more today as well.

Simi is the outsider who crashes the party on 'Hey Ma', Dremo is singing and rapping with Simi's vocals splashed across his verses, while her verse lacks the energy to brighten the song, this is another joint that somehow feels like it is elements short of something special.
'Breezy' is the perfect welcome back joint made for DMW's latest signee, Sinzu to do rap the way only he can and not even Dremo's failed trap impression at the start could dim his shine.
Alongside the impressively gifted Peruzzi, who has brought his talent to glare in a number of features including the newest hit single, 'Amaka' by 2face, the duo attempt to turn 'Unbelivas' to believers with this love joint produced by Fresh VDM.
'Fan of my Fans' is his sign out joke, but it fails to pack enough punch-line to leave the hall rolling after his exit, as the lines are quite corny on this.
It is safe to say that Dremo will not be opening a new chapter in the history of Nigerian rap like many predicted when he debuted with his earlier singles, 'Fela' and 'Ojere', but he manages to keep his presence large enough with his delivery and flow.
 The ''Codename, Vol 1 EP" is a decent introduction to a hungry artist that has all the raw talent to succeed, the beats are good, but nothing special, the collaborations work and enhances his appeal.
It does not offer the best lyrics you'll ever hear or ground-breaking music that will make you pen him down on your list of next rated, but he understands his music and his target audience.
His raw flow is also quite visible and backed by a wheel oiled machinery in DMW, Dremo will be here for a while, but will his name be first on the list few years down the line? We wait to see.

Randy male traders touch our bums, boobs pretending to seek customers â Female buyers
TOLUWANI ENIOLA writes about the practice of some randy male traders who touch vital parts of female customers at crowded markets
It was a busy Tuesday night at the popular Yaba market in Lagos which stretches to the Ojuelegba bus stop in Surulere. It is regarded as one of the crowded markets in Lagos because of its heavy human traffic and miscellany of goods on display. The market boasts of cheap, second-hand goods such as sandals, shoes, skirts, blouses and local fabrics, among others.
Boutiques, shopping plazas, restaurants, kiosks and even banks have sprouted up at every corner of the road. Some traders also freely display their wares by the roadsides which sometimes cause vehicular traffic as commuters struggle to wade through the market.
As usual, the market was reeling with noises and music as 27-year-old Mary James was returning home from work. The market is not new to James because she passes through it almost every night while commuting home from a bookshop where she works.
James detests the ubiquitous male traders, who hang around the market, pestering passers-by for patronage. The traders are known to be aggressive and saucy and sometimes harass people. Though they also harass men, women are mostly the victims. That night, James had a nasty experience. One of the traders forcefully grabbed her hand while persuading her to buy from his collections.
She tried to resist the man but he was too strong for her. While she was struggling to free herself from his grip, another male trader hugged her, whispering into her ears, âSweet girl, come and buy from me.â
James said, âWhen I felt the hug, I was speechless. As he hugged me, his hands were on my buttock. I screamed and he let me go. As I made to go, he started uttering foul languages, and said in Pidgin, âYour breast dey small and your yansh small and you dey form fine girlâ.â
That was not the first time James would experience that at the market. She added, âSometimes when they grab my hands, and I try to hit them, they will then insult me more. I used to warn them not to try their rubbish with me but they wonât listen.â
Fondling of female shoppers at markets common
The story of James is a regular occurrence in many markets in the country. James experience fits perfectly into the Equal Employment Opportunity Commissionâs definition of sexual harassment as âUnwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favours, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature, unwanted deliberate touching, leaning over, cornering, or pinching.â
The EEOCâs definition notes that such sexual harassment covers âunwanted sexual looks or gestures and unwanted sexual teasing, jokes, remarks or questions.â These cases are abundant in major markets in the country and there is a growing concern on how to check them.
In fact, in the last few months, reports from different parts of the country show that women are increasingly becoming victims of sexual harassment in markets when they go to purchase wares. Those who shared their ordeals with SUNDAY PUNCH complained that whenever they visited such crowded markets, they were always harassed and assaulted by male traders.
Another victim is a lady who identified herself simply as Bukola. She told SUNDAY PUNCH that she experienced sexual harassment in broad daylight at the Yaba market. She said, âYaba market is a very notorious place. Before I experienced it, I had heard of how their male traders use the opportunity of selling their goods to touch women indiscriminately.
âThat day, my friend and I went to Yaba market to buy some goods. While we were walking and checking out some of the clothes hung on the shelves, I just felt a hand round my waist while another male trader hugged my friend.
âIt was embarrassing. I just screamed but this guy remained adamant by holding me, telling me that he sells beautiful skirts. By this time, we were already enraged. We started insulting him but they insulted us back. One of them told us that he was better than our boyfriends.
âEver since that day, I stopped going to that market. I now buy all my clothes and shoes on the Island.â
Another victim, Christina, who spoke to our correspondent, described sexual harassment in the market as a big issue.
She said, âI went to Tejuoso market to buy some things. After negotiating the price of the goods, I realised that I didnât have enough money.
âI told the trader but he said no problem. He said if I agreed to have sex with him inside his shop, he would give me the items I wanted to buy for free. I was shocked at his boldness that it took me a while to leave his shop.â
Mrs. Olubunmi Amoo, who experienced it in 1997, said it was an age-old practice common in most crowded markets across the country. âI went to a popular market in Lagos in 1997 and a male trader sexually harassed me. He touched my right breast under the pretence of trying to sort out the clothes I wanted to buy. I hate those male traders. I hate them,â Amoo stated.
In other markets, the tales are the sameÂ
SUNDAY PUNCH gathered that other markets in Lagos such as Balogun, Aswani, Mile 12, Alaba International Market, Computer Village, Lagos Island, among others, have notoriously become a den of perverts who molest women on a daily basis.
Mrs. Grace Odeyemi recounted an experience she witnessed at Aswani market in Lagos. Aswani, located beside the Isolo Local Government Area secretariat, is well known for the sales of fairly used clothes at cheap prices.
According to her, in 2011, a lady, who wore skimpy skirt became the subject of ridicule by male traders at the market who quickly gathered to taunt her for her dressing.
Odeyemi said, âA crowd of traders gathered around her. One lifted her skirt from the front while another lifted her skirt from the back, revealing her pants. I was shocked. That is the level we have degenerated to in Nigeria.â
The story is not different at the Computer Village, Ikeja, said to be the largest Information and Communication Technology market in the country. The Computer Village spreads from Ikeja Under-Bridge towards the Ikeja Local Government secretariat.
Beginning from Binite Street, the village spreads through Anibiyi community to Otigba, overrunning Adepitan Street. The village also spills into Anifowose community and Obafemi Awolowo Way. Many landlords in the neighbourhood yielded to the commercial lure of the mega bucks that flow from the ICT sector by converting their residential houses to commercial buildings.
The market is home to mobile phones and computer dealers but also parades technicians who specialise in the repair of faulty mobiles and computers. There are also dealers in phone accessories such as batteries, phone chargers, memory cards, pirated software, movie DVDs, musicals, used mobile phones and other computer components.
Investigation by our correspondent showed that it is also becoming dangerous for ladies who visit the place to purchase IT accessories.
A civil servant, Mrs. Yemi Adebanji, shared the story of her sister who was sexually harassed at the market with SUNDAY PUNCH.
Adebanji stated, âThis sexual harassment has to stop. My sister is a bit slim and busty. So, once they saw her in the market, they abused her verbally, saying things like âkileleyi, se e n to omo lowo ni?â (What is this? Are you breastfeeding a baby?) They also said other unprintable things to her.â
Other women lamented that the crime was also flourishing in the popular Balogun Market on the Lagos Island. Balogun is a large market which sprawls across many streets on the Island. The market is one of the best places to get the best wholesale deal in different fabrics, shoes, office shorts, suits, ties etc.
Earlier in March, a 16-year-old university student, Bimbo Adenipekun, was harassed sexually at the market.
âI went to the market to get some things. There, I met a male trader. Actually, I had passed him, so he started pulling me back and touching me in sensitive areas as he winked at me.â
âHe said I should look at my chest, that he would give me any amount to follow him home. He suddenly started touching me. I just had to leave the place because I was already scared,â recounted Adenipekun.
Itâs a malady across the states
Sexual harassment of ladies is not peculiar to markets in Lagos. SUNDAY PUNCH gathered that it is also a common trend in other parts of the country such as Ibadan, Enugu, Onitsha, Port-Harcourt and even Calabar, where there are large market concentrations.
A 23-year old lady, who identified herself only as Nneka, recounted her experience at the popular âMeat Marketâ in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital.
Nneka said, âI have experienced sexual abuse in the market many times. I donât even keep count anymore. One incident has always stuck though. There was a day I was coming back from school, dressed in a high-neck top and a long skirt, and decided to buy some vegetables at the market.
âA dirty-looking man (he was perfectly sane), suddenly jumped in front of me and made kissy sounds right on top of my breasts. Oh my God! I had never felt more irritated in my life. I couldnât scream as much as I would have wanted to. I just dodged him as best as I could and walked away as fast as my legs could carry me. When I reached home that day, I cried.â
In Rivers State, some young women, who spoke to SUNDAY PUNCH, lamented how some men harassed them inside the Rumuigbo market in the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state.
Amaka, a marketer in a firm, explained how a man touched her breast inside the market.
She said, âLast two weeks in Rumuigbo market, a young man passed by my side and touched my breast. I asked him why he did that, I just saw him smiling and winking at me.
âThe man was not selling anything; he was just inside the market to do that. It is worse at Oil Mill market in Eleme. There, they can even touch your bum-bum (buttocks) and breasts. It is annoying that someone you donât know will just touch your sensitive parts.â
Also, a student, identified only as Regina, explained that because she had big buttocks, some men in the market usually screamed whenever they saw her.
She said, âI have experienced sexual harassment not only in the market but also on the street. Some men will see you, come close to you and shove you with their shoulders. Some of them will be looking at your backside and shouting, âah.â For instance, in Rumuola, someone just grabbed me and said, âHey girl, come, I like youâ. I had to scream at him to leave me alone.â
A professional usher, who gave her name as Uchechi, also narrated her experience at Mile One market. She stated that a trader once touched her body when she refused to respond to his sexual advances.
She said, âIt was at Mile One market; one of the traders there called me fine girl and when I did not respond, he touched my body. I became annoyed and when he noticed that, he called me nonsense girl.â
To Juliet, who is into make-up, the practice is prevalent in markets. She said a male trader once touched her friendâs boobs at the same Mile One market.
Juliet stated, âThe guy sells things and when he called my friend to come and buy from him and she did not answer, he came close to her and touched her breasts. That was my first time of going to Mile One market. His action was surprising as my friend dressed decently. It was annoying and embarrassing.â
Many women have also taken to the social media to express their frustration on the problem. A Twitter user, identified as @Dinma, wrote, âI was walking at a market and one guy slapped my buttocks and said in pidgin, âSee your yansh, dem dey f****you well well.â
Another Twitter user, @therealwunmi, wrote, âI went to a market and one of the sellers pressed my breast. I was angry and he said, âno be press I pressâ.â
A Twitter user, Ola Abimbola, wrote, âA guy on a bike smacked my buttock in the name of âkuro lonaâ (leave the road).â
One, whose story could be said to be a reference point in what is now known as Nigeriaâs scourge of sexual harassment in markets, is Bliss Otong.
Otong, who shared her experience on Facebook, said her young sister was sexually assaulted in her presence in a Calabar market when she went to buy her a dress for her end-of-the-term party.
She said, âSheâs just 13 years old. I was bargaining with a trader when I heard my sister saying, âDonât touch me, idiot.â I turned around and the idiot (trader) was really touching her bum again.
âI removed my slippers and hit him on his head while he ran away. Other traders were lecturing me on how my sister was beautiful and that was why they have to touch her. Guess what? They even had ladies among them.â
Why the practice festers
Why does sexual harassment of women in markets assume a damning proportion? A human rights activist, Ebenezer Omejalile, blamed market unions and regulatory agencies for the menace.
The activist maintained that the unions made the crime attractive in the markets by not sanctioning such randy traders who harass women.
Omejalile stated, âFirst, some ladies dress indecently but that is never an excuse for anybody to molest them sexually. This is why I blame the market leaders for allowing this to go unchecked.
âAlso, some of the traders are into drugs which make them behave abnormally. But the buck stops at the table of the market leaders and unions.â
However, a lawyer, Dotun Hassan, identified the cause of the problem from another perspective.
According to Hassan, sexual harassment of ladies in market thrives because most victims donât report to the police and follow up their cases to get justice.
Hassan said, âThe acts of some pervasive âmarket boysâ, who touch vital parts of women passing by their shops, is a crime, and there should be a deterrent. We must ensure that such traders are reported to law enforcement agents while proper charges are preferred against such uncultured and indiscipline conducts.
âThis embarrassing act is totally uncalled for. Most women are emotionally affected by these ridiculous activities, which, if not curbed, could lead to a breakdown of law and order due to the provocative conducts of such inhuman treatment.â
A Lagos-based lawyer and human rights activist, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, also condemned the act. He described sexual harassment of women as illegal and immoral, adding that taunting ladies and using them as objects of fun was wrong.
Adegboruwa cited Section 34 of the 1999 Constitution, which states that every citizen is entitled to the right to human dignity and respect of his or her person.
âTo that extent, it is wrong for anyone to be touching a lady or see her as an object of ridicule or entertainment, or to be touching her buttocks or any other private areas,â he stated.
Market leaders, tradersâ defence
Some traders and market leaders in Lagos said those male traders, who sexually molest female customers, were unregistered traders thronging the markets daily.
Many of such traders, they claimed, were found on the kerbs and walkways.
A trader, Mr. Bakare Kazeem, who spoke to our correspondent in one of the Lagos markets, said the randy traders enjoy moving around markets, brandishing their wares and looking for whom to hoodwink with their irresistible offers.
Kazeem pointed out that sexual harassment of ladies was usually perpetrated by unregistered traders he called âbaranda.â
He said, âThese traders donât own shops. They usually manhandle ladies passing by in their bid to encourage them to buy from them. Most of them are youths who either dropped out of school and donât have jobs. I remember one that happened recently. The boy manhandled a lady and even removed her chain in the process.ââ
Another trader, who identified himself as Emmanuel, said the crime persisted because none of the ârandy boysâ had been arrested and prosecuted.
âAnd because the boys are many, I donât know where the police will begin their work from. It has become a normal occurrence across markets and nobody is doing anything about it,â he added.
Speaking with SUNDAY PUNCH, the Babalaje of Tejuoso Phase 2 Market in Yaba, Mr. Olanrewaju Azeez, said stories of sexual harassment in the market had reached the union, noting that there was little the leaders could do to curb it.
Azeez explained that it was hard to impose sanctions on such randy traders because most of them were unregistered traders. The market leader said he made an example of one of such randy traders recently when he harassed a lady.
He stated, âIt is a tough problem for us in this market. Most of the ladies harassed are fond of dressing indecently. Yaba has many traders from different parts of the country. Most of those who commit this crime are dropouts and louts. It is very difficult to deal with them because they are many. How many of them can we really deal with?â
Also reacting to the issue, the President, Computer and Allied Products Dealers Association of Nigeria, a market group of traders in the Computer Village, Mr. Adeyemi Ojikutu, said sexual harassment of ladies rarely happened at the ICT market.
Ojikutu also claimed he was not aware that any woman was verbally or sexually harassed at any time in the market.
He, however, said there could be a few cases of sexual harassment in the market compared to other markets in the state.
When our correspondent contacted the Iyaloja-General of Lagos, Mrs. Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, on the issue, she promised to get back to our correspondent. But she had yet to do so as of the time of filing this report. She also didnât respond to a text message sent to her mobile.
But the issue has attracted the attention of the Lagos State Government, according to the Coordinator of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team, Mrs. Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi.
She added that a few cases on the issue were reported.
Vivour-Adeniyi said, âThe law is very clear. These acts constitute sexual harassment. As provided for by the law, sexual harassment is unwelcome sexual advances, request for favours and other visual, verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature.
âWe have had a few cases of this nature reported. People need to be taught to respect boundaries.â
Stakeholders offer solutions to the despicable practiceÂ
One of the solutions to the issue, according to Omejalile, lies in instituting fresh measures by market leaders to ensure the registration of all traders.
He believed market leaders must ensure that traders abide by a code of conduct, failure to obey which would lead to their expulsion from the markets.
Apart from consciously sensitising traders to such abuse, Adegboruwa urged market unions to establish task forces to nip such odious practice in the bud in order to assure smooth patronage and free movement in the markets.
He added, âBeyond this, the law enforcement agents must be alive and sensitive to attend to complaints from any citizen, on cases of assault, harassment or embarrassment.
âMore specifically, it amounts to trespass to touch anyone, let alone a lady, against his or her own volition or consent. By our own standard in society, ladies deserve special protection from any form of assault, harassment or embarrassment.â
Hassan, on his part, called for a special mobile offences law to be promulgated to protect the rights of vulnerable women.
Weâll arrest culprits if victims report to us â Police
Also, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Lagos Police Command, SP Chike Oti, noted that the crime was on the rise because âvictims donât come out to report to the police.â
He added, âWe can arrest such traders if we receive a complaint from any of their victims. Acts like indiscriminate touching of women are indecent assault and a crime.
 âIf any lady comes to complain, we will take action. They need to come forward with their complaints so that we can make arrests and investigate them.â
