Hell if I know. To be honest, I think the story got away from them. Remember this was all happening when Joss was mostly MIA working on Firefly. The other writers on the show had widely differing ideas about Spike/Spuffy, and you can kind of see that playing out across S6. Joss never seems to have sat down and clarified what he was going for.

Various leaked notes from the S6 writers' room point to there having been a major revision of the S6 arc at some point -- originally, Normal Again was supposed to take place much earlier in the season, and been the culmination of Buffy's depression plot (which seems, originally, to have been a "Buffy wants to avoid adult responsibility" plot as much as anything else -- note that Buffy's description of Heaven is very womb-like, and the writers often said at the beginning of S6 that the theme of the season would be "Oh, grow up!") Tara was supposed to die shortly thereafter and the second half of the season would be devoted to Willow's Big Bad arc.

Rumor had it that Willow's villain arc was watered down when Alysson Hannigan objected to Willow going full on evil. Tara's death kept getting pushed farther and farther back. And to fill in the empty plot space, they had the Spuffy relationship go on longer, and get much, much worse, than seems to have been originally planned. But the writers never seemed to internalize that change.

(Some portion of) the writers seemed to be completely taken by surprise that so many fans thought it would be OK for Spike to be with Buffy sans soul, and surprised that so many fans found Buffy unsympathetic after Dead Things (Espenson and I think one of the Drews have mentioned that the scene in Older and Far Away where Buffy appears annoyed when Spike brings up the beating, rather than showing any remorse, was a major screw up on their part, and writing/directing that one scene differently might have done a lot to alleviate the damage.) So I kinda think that they panicked and overcompensated, and again, didn't really sit down and think through what any of this would mean for the characters and their relationship in the long term.

And Joss has a hell of an ego. I would bet he honestly believed he could pull off that kind of character whiplash. And maybe he could have, if he'd been micromanaging the season the way he did previous ones. But he was off playing with a shiny new show, taking many of his most experienced writers with him, and left an undirected and depleted writers' room behind him (remember that over on AtS, this was when the Cordelia/Connor travesty was going on, too.)

All of this is only my opinion, twenty years after the fact, so take that for whatever you think it's worth.

I just wanna know...why. Why was that necessary? I mean, sure, Whedon is awful but I honestly wish I knew his motives for putting that in. Did he want to turn audiences against Spike but still had to keep him in? Could Spike being in love with Buffy and just wanting to be "human" for her not be enough of a motivation to seek his soul, he had to have some reason for 'redemption'? It just baffles me.

I've seen some say it's a matter of miscommunication, that we've had lots of scenes of Buffy telling Spike "no" or pushing him away only to reciprocate. And that might have still worked here, though not excused anything, if Buffy hadn't been hurt and for Spike to have seen she was hurt, for her to not have been in so much obvious distress.

But still think it was unnecessary to go this far, unless you wanted to completely reverse Spike to a Big Bad.
