Alyogyne heugelii ‘Santa Cruz’

Alyogyne huegelii is a shrub in the Hibiscus Family (Malvaceae) native to Western Australia and South Australia. It is sometimes referred to as “blue hibiscus”, but its flowers are never really blue - just a little on the blue side of purple. If left alone, it will grow to be about 7 feet tall (2 m), but it looks best if it is tip-pruned frequently so it stays lower and bushier. It flowers over a long period from spring (or even late winter) through to fall. The cultivar ‘Santa Cruz’ is an introduction by the Arboretum at the University of California Santa Cruz.

Inktober Day Thirteen: Alyogyne/ Blue Hibiscus

The thirteenth day of Inktober 2019. The flower for today is Alyogyne, a large sand- favoring flowering shrub. The individual flowers are short blooming but new flowers continue to bloom for a longer period of time. It previously fell under the genus of Hibiscus, being called the blue hibiscus.

Native Seed Search

Most native plants are suited to be planted in autumn and winter, avoiding the coldest and hottest months of the year. Therefore, the seasonal factor isn’t vital to The Table Companion.
