Book 1 - The Lincoln Lawyer by Michael Connelly
This is the first book in the Twitter list that I started in November 2016. What a wonderful book. I picked this up in the local library in the apartment complex I live in Singapore. I have picked up many books in the list there.
This book got me addicted (again) to crime, detective and lawyer books after the amazing Perry Mason books I used to read in high school.
Michael Connelly is an amazing writer. The characters he has created, both Mickey Haller, who is the protagonist of this book and Harry Bosch are just amazing.
I loved how Mickey’s and Harry’s characters are related, but then not too close either.
An ongoing theme in Connelly’s books are his character’s back stories which are slowly revealed and while they might not be part of the main story in each book plot, they form an overall meta arc of the storytelling. In Bosch’s case it is his history with finding and solving cold cases, particularly his own mother’s murder.
In Mickey’s case it is his working environments in the Lincoln automobile and his connections for example to the biker club, Hell’s Angels, who he helps in one case, but also becomes indebted to in later situations.
Both are set in Los Angeles and reading a few of them gives you a visceral feel of the city. One I have not visited, but have heard so much of.
Anyway, I was absolutely blown away by this book, my introduction to Michael Connelly’s work and you will find in the list many more books by him.
Some interesting trivia:
After reading this book, I watched Matthew McConaughey starring movie based on the book. It was good and enjoyable
In 2019, I started playing LA Noire, an addictively compulsive police detective game set in Los Angeles of the 1940s. The the game is a cult icon in its own right and amazing, but I particularly enjoyed it more because of the visual sense of Los Angeles that I had got from reading the Michael Connelly books. Its remarkable how realistic the game’s city was, and how it has remained same half a century and more later as portrayed in the books, movies and TV shows.
Speaking of TV shows, the Netflix show ‘The Lincoln Lawyer’ in 2022 is amazing and I binged it. I have since also binged on Amazon Prime’s ‘Bosch’ series which is older. Both are gripping and amazing with Titus Welliver in particular being Bosch personified. Its sort of sad though for a book fan that the Netflix and Amazon series wont see the characters cross over. Bosch and Mickey are paternal half brothers, but Amazon Prime and Netflix are unfortunately not.

▪️◽️December TBR◽️▪️ QOTD: what’s on your TBR? Is there a book you want to get to before the year ends? Some of the books I am planning on reading is Hidden Figures, Breaking Dawn, and You’ve Reached Sam. Maybe others that come along too. 😅 I was so excited to have found this in the Little Free Library next to me! This sounds so cool and i love the whole concept of the twisted tales. ◽️Synopsis◽️ What if Meg had to become a god? After Hercules proves he's a true hero and regains his godship, all seems right in the world. That is, until Zeus tells Meg that she can't be with Hercules because she's, well, mortal. Luckily, Hera has a solution, offering Meg a chance to prove herself worthy of a spot on Mt. Olympus--as a god. All Meg has to do is complete a mysterious quest. The mission? Oh, just to rescue her ex's current wife from the Underworld. The ex-boyfriend she saved by selling her soul to Hades. The ex-boyfriend who immediately moved on to someone else while she was stuck in the Underworld. Can Meg put her past behind her and use her quick-wit to defeat monsters and gods alike, including the nefarious Hades? Will she finally figure out her place and contribution to the world? Or will her fear of commitment have her running away from an eternity of godhood with Herc? ▪️Tags▪️ #decembertbr #gothedistance #jencalonita #twistedtales #herculesretelling #yaretelling #fantasy #alwaysreading #alwaysreadingabook #readersofinstagram #booksarelife📚 #bookishaesthetic #bookishlife #bookposts https://www.instagram.com/p/CW_bJ6kLg6U/?utm_medium=tumblr

Rich People Problems (Crazy Rich Asians #3) by Kevin Kwan ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This was amazing final book in Crazy Rich Asians trilogy that revolved around drama among three generations of three big family branches of one crazy rich asian family over disposition of vast estate now that the matriarch of the family was on deathbed. The story was about family drama, family secrets, inheritance, social acceptance, parental pressure, insecurity, jealousy, friendship, love, and super crazy rich lifestyle. Writing was totally gripping, vivid, painstakingly detailed (something I should have mentioned in previous books) and this time it was more entertaining. I wasn’t wrong with most of the things I guessed this book would have and yet it was a whirlwind of surprises with some crazy and some horrid dramas that made this 500+ long book a fast read compared to its predecessors. We see all characters back in this book. They all had good role. Even the smallest character had a little story that wasn’t told before. And it was great to meet new characters. Astrid really shone through this book. Grandma Su Yi stole the show. Best part of the book was history of Grandma’s life and Tyrsall Park. Some scenes were insightful and poignant. My small wish was I would have liked to see Rich People Problems list author started in the prologue to be continued throughout the book. Overall, Rich People Problem was entertaining, gripping, fun, dramatic, and bittersweet fiction with some lovely, some insightful, and some poignant moments. I highly recommend this if you like, previous books in series drama and gossips East Asian culture Crazy rich lifestyle cocktail of emotions interesting characters painstakingly detailed but exquisite writing multiple perspective 𝙌𝙊𝙏𝘿- Do you think this series could have done as good without having a particular main character? #BooksTeacupandReviews #bookreview #KevinKwan #RichPeopleProblem #drama #CrazyRichAsianaseries #familydrama #romance #fiction #readersofinstagram #bookbloggerofinstagram #readersofig #igbooks #booktography #igread #bookstagramfeature #alwaysreadingabook #Indianbookstagram #bookcommunity #gossips #bookalicious #instabooks (at Ahmedabad, India) https://www.instagram.com/p/CXleAZcPc-E/?utm_medium=tumblr

I received e-copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review. Many thanks to @onemorechapterhc . Red House (Jess Bridges Mystery #3) by Joss Stirling Publication Date : November 27th 2020 Publisher : #OneMoreChapter Genre : Mystery / #Crime #Fiction ★★★★ 𝙍𝙚𝙫𝙞𝙚𝙬 It was entertaining #whodunnit #mystery that revolved around body found in central north Oxford, an affluent and quiet area in terms of crime, near the Red House where coincidently Jess has just moved in as house sitter. The story was about business rivalry between Russian Oligarchs, nosey neighbours, socialism and yet conservative thoughts and behaviour, political connections, diamonds, money, and past secrets. Characters were interesting and realistic. I so loved seeing development in Jess and Leo’s relationship. Now that they got closer because of current investigation we see change in them, know their past and both handled each other’s past maturely and I loved how it strengthened their bond. Mystery was much more complex. I had idea who was the culprit at around 50% of the book but Like Leo I was slight wrong in guessing and was blinded by likability. Overall, #RedHouse was fun, intriguing, and complex #murdermystery with interesting characters. I highly recommend this book if you’re fan of author, whodunnit mystery, sassy and fun character. Book Lists
I have always been an avid reader. In 2016, I started to read and keep track of the books I am reading. So, I started a Twitter list. Every book I read, I would post the name and the author with a hashtag like #AlwaysReadingABook. I would also keep a book count.
I wanted to read a book a week, so I tried that for a few weeks. It was not feasible. But, I continued reading almost everyday and keeping a list of what I read on Twitter. I was not very sophisticated about it. I may not have known about Twitter’s thread features at that time, so I was only replying to my own previous tweet for the next book.
I was also not posting the photos of the book covers. I was not @at-ing the authors even if there were around on Twitter.
I was not writing my thoughts about the books. It was just a list.
Slowly, as the Twitter app got slightly better, I started posting the photos of the book covers, but still it was the same old reply thread. Sometimes I included the @ handle of the author. But I was not consistent.
Over the years, Instagram became the place to curate such posts. Visually appealing to have book covers. I experimented with that, but somehow I never caught onto Instagram. It seemed too vain to me. The Twitter list continued. It continues to this day and will continue, as long as I am active on Twitter and if Elon keeps Twitter alive.
Also, Twitter was only a list keeping space. It was not feasible to write short notes about what I thought about the book. Or share notes about what I learned from the books. Including those would somehow break the flow.
So, as my note taking interests grew, I found myself exploring how to combine these. A place to keep track of the books I am reading, but also to post thoughts and learnings about them.
That is how I have landed at this Tumblr. I realized that I had a wonderful Tumblr page, which was creative and not so vanity filled as Instagram. A perfect mix of Twitter/blog and Instagram like environment. And I could host it as a link on my website. Hence this was born.
I will be going back to 2016, and start posting the books from the Twitter list in chronological order. I won’t have pics of the books for initial few, so I will find the covers from the internet. But I will post them with my summary about the book. I am not going to read them again now. I have many new exciting books on my tsundoku list. But, I believe it should be possible to remember a bit about the books and write my impressions and learning about it.
Let’s go!

Many thanks to @rachelsrandomresources for tour invite and author for e-copy, in exchange for an honest review. The Winter Song by Saurav Dutt Publication Date: December 15th 2020 Genre: General Fiction ★★★★ (3.5) 𝙍𝙚𝙫𝙞𝙚𝙬 #TheWinterSong was interesting and well written #fiction that revolved around 64 yrs old John and his journey to fulfil promise he made to his wife before she died. The story was about loss, grief, guilt, regrets, family, love, and what parents had to endure on losing son at young age to substance addiction. Writing was beautiful, descriptive and flowery with long chapters and nonsequential past and present. The setting of Shimla to Spiti Valley was atmospheric and perfectly written. This was character driven story with main focus on guilt and regrets. It was touching, emotional and heart-breaking to see what this old couple went through. Past chapters gave depth to characters. I rooted for John from the beginning. He was complex character. Layer of Substance addiction, what it causes to people, addict and his/her family was well portrayed. Why 3.5 stars Last 20% of the book was weird. Until this point, I could get John and his journey and even I liked how he was slowly going towards self-realization but then that climax and what happened from that point to end made me confuse. I didn’t get it and that open ended end didn’t help. Overall, it was well written, emotive, and layered fiction. If you are fan of literary/general fiction, flowery writing, like theme of loss and guilt, journey to self-realization, book set in picturesque part of India, I recommend this book. Many thanks to @shannon_rrbooktours for review opportunity and author for providing e-copy, in exchange for honest review. The Shadow Watch (The Shadow Watch #1) by S.A. Klopfenstein Publication Date : 15th May 2018 Genre : YA Fantasy ★★★★ 𝙍𝙚𝙫𝙞𝙚𝙬 It was interesting first book in fantasy series that revolved around Tori who founds her dormant power in trying to save her friend that triggered series of event and made her to join rebel army. The story was about power, greed, manipulation, friendship, love, betrayal, letting go of guilt and regrets, embracing gift, saving the world, hope, and responsibilities. Characters were complex, interesting and flawed. Tori was my favourite character. I admired her will, endurance, and resilience. World was best part. It had Grishaverse vibe. It was interesting to read about Old and New World, how Old World ended and what caused it, creatures of Old World, legends, political unrest in New World.. The world looked so vast with so much possibilities as I read more. Overall, it was impressive, action-packed YA fantasy with interesting characters and world. If you like world with elemental magic, politics, drama, grey and flawed characters, I recommend this book. Read full review on my book blog by following link in my profile.
