radiohead’s complicity in israeli-occupied palestine

my feelings on radiohead are complicated these days, as i’m sure they are for many. i'm using this post as a method of sorting out my own thoughts & to provide sources.

for me, the bottom line is this: radiohead is both a brand & a musical group. the brand of radiohead has always had deep roots in the israeli colonial project - they have played many, many shows there throughout their career. their breakout single - creep, was intially only a hit in israel (x, x) & the personal choices of some of radiohead's members remain just as involved. jonny greenwood met his future wife - the israeli artist, antivaxxer & vehement zionist (x) sharona katan - at a show radiohead played in israel in 1993 (x). jonny consistently collaborated with zionist musician shye ben tzur & his projects continue to tour in tel aviv as recently as last september. as for jonny himself - his only statement in regards to the war on gaza has been in mourning for the israeli concert goers on october 10th - w no such empathy spared to the 100,000 palestinians dead, injured, or missing. as for thom, while he’s thrown a few bitchfits (x) through the years abt criticism of radiohead’s shows in israel, he has imo - only paid lipservice to the criticism, saying “playing in a country isn’t the same as endorsing its government” going against the pleas of his peers & coworkers in the music industry. as well as the pro-palestine activism undertaken by his long term friend micheal stipe (x & x). (note: stipe stood by radiohead’s performance in israel in 2017, but his current political choices suggest his understanding of the situation has evolved). even his own son - noah yorke, a fellow working musician, has voiced his opposition to the genocide in gaza via instagram stories. as for the other members, rhythm guitarist ed o'brien has called for a ceasefire, as well as making a few tweets about "solidarity with palestinians & israeli peacemakers". while bassist colin greenwood reportedly refused to accept letters of dialogue from the fan-run organization radiohead fans for palestine. drummer phillip selway's commentary is similarly brief but defensive, saying radiohead's 2017 tel aviv concert "felt right"

to me, this paints a picture of a band who's members stances on israel range from abhorrent to simply not enough. & as a brand, their particular combination of action & inaction amounts to a fundamentally zionist perspective. you cannot separate radiohead as artists from radiohead as a brand name.

i've loved radiohead since i was 14. i was brought into it by another longtime fan. i cried & danced when i saw them live back in 2017 - it was, & remains, a moment that allowed me to live through the hardest parts of my life. i felt for the longest time, that radiohead's music & political positions encouraged my empathy - my questioning of conservative political authority. & while all celebrities are failures in some sense - it is still heartbreaking to know how wrong i was.

i don't think it's possible to disconnect the decade of connection & love i have for their music - I won't ask that of myself or anyone else. & the idea of scrubbing one's taste of the "morally impure" is useless effort & an inappropriate simplification of both art & our conceptions of what makes someone "bad". but i can say with certainty - i will not be giving them any more of my money, whether that be streaming their music or buying their merch - & i encourage you to do the same. silence is complicity - this is beyond silence.

This is my first post ever and I’m pretty new on this so bear with me here 😭😭

I’m not exactly the biggest bnha fan but I’ve always really liked Shoto, Monoma and Hawks. Especially Shoto. But whenever I see fanfics or smau’s or one shots, (you name it), in my opinion he’s 99% of the time VERY mischaracterized.

Call me crazy (I am) but I kinda sorta psychoanalyzed his character and here are A FEW of my head canons :))

Feel free to disagree ofc and I mean absolutely no hate to anyone these are just my opinions !!

★ - He’s not morally good, per se, but morally complex. He’s a good person for sure but doesn’t exactly always do what is “heroic.” For example, if there was a battle going on and Shoto had to choose between saving 10 civilians or a loved one, (e.g Rei) he would definitely choose to save Rei.

★- He’s not as dense as people think he is. Shoto is usually portrayed as dense when it comes to girls flirting with him or sarcasm. But I don’t think he’s always like that. Especially because he’s quite sarcastic himself. I think over time he’d start understanding things like that a lot more. I also think he’s secretly really funny lmao. He’d have peak dark humor.

★- Sleep deprived but not exactly an insomniac. It’s canon that Shoto can sleep at anytime in any environment, but we all know he has PTSD. I feel like he’d have nightmares really often and would avoid sleeping because of that. It’s not that he can’t sleep, he just doesn’t want to.

★- The way he got over his trauma so quickly in anime was kind of unrealistic in my opinion. I feel like he’d only JUST processed some of it and hadn’t exactly gotten over it. It would definitely take more time than just a few months.

Okay so here are some cute/funny ones !!

★- DEFINITELY plays piano and guitar. I feel like he was forced to learn piano as a kid and learnt guitar and got better at it to be petty.

★- A lot of people headcanon that he’d be a Mitski fan but I think that’s more of a Deku thing. Shoto would be a Nirvana, Deftones and Radiohead kind of guy. Maybe he’d even listen to the neighborhood or Lana Del Rey. (Off topic but I DEEPLY believe that Bakugo listens to Ayesha Erotica religiously.)

★- LOVES to rile Bakugo up. Shoto just enjoys the way Bakugo gets mad lol. He definitely provokes the guy a lot when they’re hanging out. (They’re best friends, Bakugo is just in denial)

★- He’d either be straight or bi. (imo)

★- Has watched mean girls (Karen is his fav)

★- Shoto would read books by Osamu Dazai, Oscar Wilde, Charlotte Brönte, Kazuo Ishiguro, Haruki Murakami and is a deathnote fan.

★- He’s pretty cold, quiet and reserved but has a kind heart. But he’s also quite rude lol. Shoto is the type of person to say it how it is and be as blunt as anyone could be.

★- He loves cats and cats love him.

★- Unlike a lot of people say, I don’t think his texts would have good grammar and he wouldn’t send long texts. I feel like he’d try to keep his texts as short as possible because he just can’t be bothered. And I also think the only emojis he uses are “💀🖕😒”

★- Definitely doesn’t speak formally or properly. It’s canon that he’s really blunt and rude. Basically a quieter and more sarcastic version of Bakugo. Shoto is probably very rude but not always on purpose lol. (On purpose a lot of the time, though)

• Classical. Music.

• Can list you every thing that Bach or Vivaldi ever published, but with the backstories

• I just picture him closing his eyes and sighing very loudly whenever he listens to something he loves

• Will dance to old Jazz music until the sun comes up, and says the day after that it was a really wild night

• Also listens A LOT to Lana (would never admit it)

• Secretly gossips and argues over her online. Tries to keep it a secret but his username is “DickDelRey101”

{Lewis Nixon}

• Classic Rock all the way

• I’m talking Bob Dylan, Rolling Stones, ACDC…

• “Paranoid - Black Sabbath” was his wedding song

• When he gets home he falls into the old chair next to the record player with a bottle of whiskey already waiting

• He’s always like “I need this music to calm down, don’t you understand???” and absolutely means it

• Drives the car only to listen to “Enter Sandman” and wear sunglasses while he does (windows all the way down, volume max)

• 100% certified Dad music

{Ronald Speirs}

• This mans music is all over the place

• Just like my feelings for him lol

• But mostly listens to a lot of old music???

• Like 40s to 60s, also a big fan of Elvis and Johnny Cash

• Literally has pictures of them hanging in the doorway

• Always says he doesn’t care about things like music, but will make a playlist for every one he meets with songs that remind him of them

• I swear to everything music would be one of his love languages - he’d absolutely remember every song you ever liked

• Turns the radio louder randomly to songs with the explanation “saw you smiling to that with your morning coffee last week”

{Donald Malarkey}

• Listens to a whole lot of sad songs - and I’m talking about gut wrenching, laying on the bathroom floor kind of sad

• Also somehow into Grunge??

• At least three Radiohead songs in every one of his playlists

• The Smiths is his happy music

• When his favorite Pink Floyd Record is on he listens to it all day. He runs to push the play button again every time it stops.

• 100% an alternative Rock / Nu Metal kind of guy

• Would have Deftones playing all day

• Also listens to Bloodhound Gang a lot lol (The song “Jackass” is his anthem!!!)

• Just imagine him sitting in the garage with Guarnere, drinking beer while an old Limp Bizkit vinyl is on

• He thinks it’s the greatest thing of all time that bands began to combine Rap with Hardcore

• In terms of that - definitely a fan of Deez Nuts, Hollywood Undead or Linkin Park

• Unironically listens to the Soundtrack of Oklahoma

• It just puts a smile on his face every time he hears it - takes him back to the news of the musical still on broadway back in war

I am a minor, and most of my followers are too

It makes me feel extremely guilty

Seeing pictures of injuries or hospitals etc are triggering for me (which are in most intro posts for this sort of thing)

TWISTED CHARACTERS AND THE MUSIC I THINK THEY'D LIKE! (octavinelle vers.)

i really liked in book 3 when azul azuled all over the place and it was really just azul i fear -isa<3

i'm sorry guys you know he's obviously changed and over the course of the story he's gotten more likeable to me but for SOME REASON when we met azul in book 3 and he kept talking with his corny villain dialogue + using that dumb ass creepy smile sprite it just always UGHHHHH IDK!! when they explained his backstory at the end of the book and said he was bullied and all i started headcanoning that the way he coped through allat was by falling down the alt-right pipeline of male manipulator/incelcore music.. my bad yall.. he looks like a stereotypical weezer/the smiths/pixies/radiohead/deftones fan who goes on reddit or 4chan and quizzes women about the bands and calls them a fake fan if they say they like one of their popular songs. AGAIN like i said he got character development he changed and DEF would not do that at this point in the story, but erm....... -a radiohead stan

FLOYD LEECH

Now ngl trying to think of what music Floyd would like was kind of hard for me. he (as a character) is kind of all over the place but then I realized.. his music taste is probably all over the place too. i think if he were to describe what he liked to anyone he'd probably say sum shit along the lines of "whatever sounds good." though, he spends a lot of time at the basketball club with ace (and jamil too BUT WE NOT SPOILING MY SCARABIA HCS YET) so like what I said for ace, you'd probably see a whole lot of carti, eminem, etc on his spotify wrapped. I will say though, I headcanon that when Floyd likes a song, he will run it to the ground until it is dead, decomposing, and fertilizing another plant. sometimes he'll not even like a song like that anymore but he's been annoying his brother and Azul with it for so long that he'll continue to play it because he likes irritating them.

JADE LEECH

I think jade would have the more defined music taste out of everyone in Octavinelle. he'd probably enjoy listening to genres such as post-punk, alternative rock, and borderline gothic rock in his airpods while he's cleaning the tables of the Mostro Lounge when work's over. him and azul would probably bond over both liking The Smiths and the Pixies, but I really think Jade's favorites would be bands like Joy Division, Talking Heads, The Cure, and I also think he'd be another Radiohead fan. (we got a lot of male manipulators in this house /hj) He's the type to carefully curate his playlists, add fitting cover photos and make a list of all the albums he's listened to, and scoff at his brother's 300+ unorganized liked songs list on spotify.

I don't know if this song has been suggested yet but 15 Step by Radiohead for Rainhaze? Not just for the "one by one / it comes to us all / it's as soft as your pillow" (in reference to how he perceived death) but if you're willing to skew the optimism in the first verse, I see it as the line where he finally 'realizes' what Defiance is all about - when he finally sheds the Old Rainhaze for the new one by killing Asphodelpaw ("first you reel me out and then you cut the string"). Plus, there's a very on the nose reference that I see Ranger making to him in relation to finding out about Barrenclan ("you used to be alright, what happened? / did the cat get your tongue? / did your string come undone?") which is conveniently immediately before the Death lines.

And with recent developments (I had this ask planned for a while lol) now the "You used to be alright, what happened?" ...Ohhhh that hits. The difference between the mocking tone of Ranger the first time around, and then the second time the verse is repeated, it being cut off with "etcetera, etcetera..." which I either interpret as Rainhaze being unable to finish 'convincing' the rest of Barrenclan because he got interrupted then Tigerstar'd... Much to think about.

Anyway love this comic, been following it (and TDS!) since day 1, can't believe it's been so many years of it. At least one. You have a talent for storytelling!! I can't wait to see what you have planned for the future, big fan!

Ooh, I always like getting instrumental music recommendations! I've never seen LOST, but both my parents watched it while it was airing. PATFW is definitely a mystery story, although I like to think I got to my resolutions better than JJ did. Giacchino is a great scorer of course, I like how this song is sad, sweet, and a little ominous. Reminds me of Twin Peaks.

Haha yes, it's definitely a popular suggestion for a popular song. But it is very pretty, and I do like the themes of burial and fighting to try and restrain someone who won't be restrained.

I like it! Comorantpaw has a strong streak of self-hatred and lately, is very much feeling like he's permanently stained with evil because of his past. But he still wants to be there for Pinepaw, maybe thinking it's all he's good for.

I believe it was suggested a couple years ago with Hush Puppy and Thrasher, but not Rainhaze! It's an interesting angle to make it about him and Ranger.
