So update on me: I’m working on three graphic novels at the moment.

Guardian of the Sun:

Orphans Nash and Nova struggle for everyday survival, but they make it by scamming people for money, food, and clean air—because air has now become a commodity. With Sunchild Cordelia choosing to stay in the castle instead of spreading light to the land, the North has fallen into despair. Trees have all but disappeared, food has become scarce, and two kids living on their own can't do much. They travel from village to village, but decide to take their act to a new place. The Inner Cirlce is where most of the wealth lies, so Nova takes her little brother and marches out. But Nash is getting sicker by the day, and he needs clean air soon—or else.

For the Monsters of Man:

Twins Alvera and Alaster are just babies when they are abducted by Lab 1 for experiments to make Advanced Humans. All is generally terrible, and the torture is extreme—making stronger, faster, smarter kids with superpowers is no small feat, and the scientists do not care for their subjects and see them as numbers and letters in a notebooks—or as animals, or, even worse, monsters of their own creation. To make matters even more gruesome, kids are pitted against each other for testing, and the winner survives and gets their meal as a prize: the loser. Alaster and Alvara just want out, and with their healing abilities, they might just make it—but only if no one else tries to eat them.

Entry 705: The Kreetassans

Occupation: Occasionally-recurring alien snoots.

Summary: These humanoids are among the most fastidious and protocol-obsessed in the galaxy. Their standards for conduct are strict, both among themselves and among other species. As a result, they often come across as insufferably stuffy and obnoxious, but are incredibly easy to insult by accident. They have a number of sacred Alvera trees over 300 years old in front of their capitol. Mutilating or defacing them is considered a tremendous insult. However, if the mutilation was accidental, there is an apology ritual that involves mutilating the tree even further. They regard eating to be absolutely disgusting to observe, and take all meals in private, regarding it in a similar vein to mating. Exposure to a human mess hall will send them storming from the room in disgust. Exposure to a Klingon mess hall will render them catatonic. Fortunately, they are also quick to forgive any faux pas committed by others if offered an apology, provided the apology is seen as sincere. Their first encounters with humans were less than optimal, due to a number of accidental insults delivered against them. To the end of his days, Jonathan Archer considered bringing his dog to see the sacred trees on their tour of the capitol to be "the dumbest thing I ever did as an ambassador to anyone". They joined the Federation some time after its founding.

‘A brand-new life’

David Kidder didn’t have time for lung cancer.

He didn’t even want to slow down for a biopsy.

A fit and active 79-year-old, David had lumber to haul and crops to plant. And while building a 2,000-square-foot addition to his house, he worked shoulder-to-shoulder with the crew.

When an X-ray revealed a suspicious spot on his upper right lung, David worried it could put the brakes on his active life.

With a little research, however, he learned Spectrum Health has pioneered a minimally invasive biopsy technique—requiring no incision.

And even when the biopsy revealed stage 1 cancer, a surgeon removed it with a minimally invasive operation.

“This is a gift from God,” said David, as he took a break from his construction project at home. “I can do anything. Wow, I am blown away. I have no effects—nothing.”

Retired from the lumber business, David lives with his wife, Alvera, on a 480-acre country property in Hesperia, Michigan.

Last winter, he thought he had a bronchial infection, so he went to a local doctor’s office.

“The doctor came back and said, ‘Mr. Kidder, you have a little spot on your lung.’”

David couldn’t believe it.

“I have never smoked a cigarette in my life,” he said.

A minimally invasive approach

The doctor urged him to get a biopsy to see if the spot was cancerous.

The first specialist David consulted said, given the location of the lesion, he would need two incisions to reach the nodule and lymph nodes for a biopsy.

David worried about how long it would take to heal from the procedure. So, he began to research his options.

His search led him to Spectrum Health’s pulmonology department and their procedure that combines three technologies—robotics, electromagnetic navigation and a cone beam CT scanner to provide real-time scans of a patient’s lungs during the biopsy.

Spectrum Health doctors became the first in the nation to perform the advanced technique in 2019.

“The minimally invasive approach used for diagnosing his lung cancer is only being done in a handful of hospitals in the country,” said Gustavo Cumbo-Nacheli, MD, a Spectrum Health interventional pulmonologist.

Early on a February morning, David went into the operating room for the biopsy.

A screen above the operating table showed a map of his airways. In the upper right lung lay a spot less than an inch wide, about the size of a grape.

Dr. Cumbo guided a Monarch Auris bronchoscopy scope, equipped with a camera, into his airway and then into his right lung. An electromagnetic navigation system guided him through the twists and turns of David’s airways to the upper lobe—a difficult area to reach.

“This is a really hard case, really hard, as it is far out there,” he said.

When he reached the lesion, he deployed the needle to take a sample for a biopsy. Before doing so, however, he checked the placement of the needle using a cone beam CT scanner.

The medical team, wearing lead aprons, backed away from the operating table as the scanner moved around the table, creating a 3D image of the lungs.

In the control room, Dr. Cumbo examined the image. It showed the needle sat 2 centimeters away from the lesion.

He returned to the operating table and again navigated toward the lesion. This time, the real-time CT scan showed the needle in the center of the spot.

Fight back against lung cancer

“This is a win for this technology,” Dr. Cumbo said. “The beauty of doing this, even though it took one hour extra, is that we can provide patients with personalized medicine in a safe way.”

Without the CT scan to confirm placement of the biopsy needle, David would have needed a repeat biopsy.

Dr. Cumbo hopes the approach soon will be used not only to biopsy a tumor, but to treat it. Researchers are investigating the use of the procedure to perform an ablation or deliver chemotherapy directly to a tumor.

It would be a welcome development in the treatment of lung cancer, which kills 150,000 Americans each year and accounts for 25% of all cancer deaths.

“With lung cancer being the one of the most aggressive cancers, we need to fight back,” Dr. Cumbo said.

Next step: surgery

After the procedure, David said he felt no discomfort.

“I never had one bit of repercussion from the whole thing,” he said. “It was just awesome.”

The biopsy revealed the lesion was cancerous. But the biopsies of nearby lymph nodes showed no sign of cancer.

David soon learned surgery to remove his tumor also could be performed with a minimally invasive approach.

“When I left the doctor that day, I couldn’t believe it,” he said. “The sun was shinier. The trees were brighter.”

In early March, Geoffrey Lam, MD, a Spectrum Health cardiothoracic surgeon, performed a robotic, minimally invasive surgery to remove the upper lobe of David’s right lung.

The surgery required only four small incisions in his chest, each about the size of a fingertip, to accommodate the tools and camera needed for the operation.

After Dr. Lam removed the lobe, he placed it in a bag and cinched the drawstring, compressing the tissue small enough to be removed through a narrow tube. He also removed 28 lymph nodes for examination.

“Fortunately, his final pathology report showed he had stage 1A lung cancer, and therefore he would not need any chemotherapy or radiation after surgery,” Dr. Lam said. “He will just undergo periodic surveillance CT scans of the chest for monitoring purposes.”

For David, the news brought relief, as well as gratitude for the medical team that brought him through lung cancer.

“Dr. Cumbo and Dr. Lam are so dedicated and professional, and their efforts saved my life,” he said. “Their kindness and caring were so apparent, and it followed through to every person who cared for me at Spectrum Health Meijer Heart Center.

“I believe it is only by the grace of God that I am here, because he led me to Spectrum Health and the wonderful physicians there.”

A second chance

After four days in the hospital, David went home to recover.

“I was on the John Deere tractor one week after I got home,” he said.

By day 10, he walked 2 miles a day and no longer needed prescription pain medication.

After he received the all-clear to resume his activities, David jumped back into the chores around the house and farm. He used a chainsaw to cut down two large cherry trees. He planted 10 acres of corn.

He enjoys quieter pursuits, as well—like watching the deer that wander through his property.

“This morning I was watching mama with her two twins,” he said. “She had her buck fawn with her. The babies were nuzzling the small buck and mama kind of pawed at him.”

After a year of construction, David has nearly finished the addition on his home. Soon, he will open the entry between the house and spacious new room.

“It’s like a brand-new life,” he said. “I’m thankful to God that he gave me another chance.”

ok, boomer. first, you’re cancelled for your “use” of “stan girl language.” second off, ent was good and here’s why.

so i had to google why people hate ent since you just gave me a claim with no evidence. the main reasons are that people don’t like archer, they don’t like the theme song, s1/s2/these are the voyages sucked, lack of character development, too political, and the sexiness (decon and t’pol’s outfits). if you have another reason, and would like to provide me with evidence, then go right ahead, but if you’re just here to harass a 17 year old girl, please reevaluate your life.

and yes! there are genuine complaints! i’m not saying that ent was a godsend and that its crew was perfect (except for porthos, change my fuckin mind) but overall, it was good. shall we begin?

1.) people don’t like archer.

honestly? really? you hate a whole show because of its captain? wow that’s petty. this one’s kinda fair, he was kind of a dick to t’pol in broken bow (01 x 01). he hijacked somebody’s ship and stranded them 3 years from home (03 x 19, “damage”). he had a temper, illustrated in several episodes.

but jonny archer was human.he had his good moments too, like helping to be a founder of the whole damn federation. he apologized to t’pol in broken bow, and he didn’t steal that warp coil without moral doubt and all that. he was in the expanse, fighting to save all of humanity (since it was established in 03 x 10 “twilight” that the xindi would come after all of humanity). it was lowkey a “them or us” thing but “us” (the humans) had more at stake.

was it dumb he brought porthos along? especially to the kreetassans’ planet? yes. did he have the right to be angry that they almost killed his dog? yes. should he have threatened to piss on their alvera trees? probably not but i laughed so hard i cried.

3.) s1/s2/these are the voyages sucked.

everyone hates these are the voyages, dude. welcome to the boat. we were all disappointed. scott bakula (archer) admitted to not liking it. brannon braga (writer) said he didn’t like it either.

i will admit that s1/s2 weren’t as great. the temporal cold war stuff was just kinda sprinkled in there (imho; in my humble opinion). bc there were plenty of s1/s2 episodes that you could watch and understand without knowing about the tcw, including a few i liked: rogue planet (01 x 18), acquisiton (01 x 19), first flight (02 x 24), a night in sickbay (02 x 05), and the catwalk (02 x 12).

i’m not a film expert, so i can’t really comment that much on the writing. some of the above are funny, or historical, or inspiring (first flight!!) but there were some duds and some that just weren’t memorable. like “oH that existed.”

so this one’s a legitimate complaint. but that’s only half the show. s3 and s4 (the best season, imho)

4.) lack of character development.

okay yes and no. again i’m not a film or literature expert and the closest i got to developing a character was a shitty oc i made in the fifth grade and still write shit with. i can see where this one’s coming for bc like. hoshi??? guys can we get more hoshi?? or like. hayes? i feel like the earlier seasons (½) were like into the UNKNOOOOOOOOWN!

excuse the frozen gif. had to, especially since i laughed at this ask that @enterprisenx01 got. i could not BREATHE. thats beside the point to. we got archer/t’pol/trip. mainly t’pol and trip together. but there was archer, like being henry archer’s lEgAcY son and water polo. but you’re totally right, we got robbed of more character development.

5.) too political.

this is star trek, my friend. it’s always been political. see this post for political episodes of tos, tng, ds9, voy and ent. also “the mark of gideon” from star trek explicitly deals with abortion/contraception. kirk was pro-choice. this video is a clip of the episode to back me up. here’s a tumblr post about it. think it’s altered? tos 03 x 16. have fun watching.

6.) too sexy (decon, t’pol’s uniform)

this is legit, imma be honest. why tf was the crew shirtless half the time? maybe they predicted there would be thirsty people on the internet. kirk was shirtless a lot too tho, and seven of nine (voy) and deanna troi (tng) spent way too much time in skin tight suits. but DECON??? i get that. but hey, if you’ve ever found a nice ent character x reader fanfic, you can thank the writers.

i’ve heard that ent failed because of upn, the network it was broadcast on, and because the s3 xindi arc was too much for the 2000s. there was no netflix so i couldn’t just sit there and binge watch 20 episodes in a day. and it would be kinda confusing, i admit, if you randomly got something like “azati prime” (03 x 18) and went “wtf why are they in battle.”

upn was too busy broadcasting baseball (ew, sportsball) according to connor trinneer, aka trip tucker.

and apparently, everyone was tired of star trek. tng, ds9, voyager, and now ent? wow that’s a lot of trek to watch. since ent was on the tail end, it got the short stick. :( it also launched shortly after 9/11 and so everyone was kinda down in the dumps and Not excited for a star trek happy future. wasn’t the us at war or something? again?

it’s a shame really, ent was good and i will stand by that. it’s not without flaws, but it definitely does not deserve all the shit it gets. no show is perfect, and it got cancelled at its peak (!) and would’ve become SO MUCH BETTER

if it had been allowed more seasons.

next time, if you’re gonna hate on ent, at least come with a solid argument and don’t insult “stan girl” language if you can’t even understand it. get a universal translator.
