Sealand Homecoming Event
Tumblr media
A new week long event that coincides with the release of SP Ootakemaru and SP Ubume. It is the 1st half of the 2 part event "Promise with the Ancient Sea". It's similar to War of Mt Oe and some more recent events that have characters replace our onmyouji like Bound by Love. Consists of 3 main parts; False Islet, True Island and the Final Battle. There is also is a puzzle but it's more of a side thing that you should be able to complete without even trying.
General Info
Battle Report
Like War of Mt Oe, there is an "event chat" labelled Battle Report. In the Battle Report there are 3 tabs;
Report - displays how long until the Evil Spirits start attacking the Sacred Trees, how long the attacks will last, how much of total HP/shield for the Sacred Trees is left, a daruma that displays rewards for protecting the Sacred Trees every evening when tapped on, etc.
Chat - event chat, unsure if this tab will be CN only.
Treasure - view Morale and Treasure, this tab is removed when the Final Battle starts.
Treasure
Morale is a server-wide buff for ATK and DEF on the True Island map. Every time an Evil Spirit Lair has been successfully defeated(?), Morale will go up by 1 level and every level increases ATK and DEF by 0.5%.
Personal Treasures are found on the False Islet map by clearing Treasure Hunting zones. They provide buffs that only affect you in battles on the True Island map.
Treasure effects;
Jeweled Fish: Event AP cost to challenge Evil Spirits on the True Island map is decreased by 1.
Bell Taiko: Changes the effect of Morale from "every level increases ATK and DEF by 0.5%" to "every level increases ATK and DEF by 1%".
Japanese Umbrella: Increased conversion of Miasma Crystals into shields for the Sacred Trees (was 30%, now increased to 50%).
Lunar Jade: Damage dealt to Evil Spirits in their lairs is increased by 10%.
Suzuka
Upon starting the event you may notice that the character you'll be controlling and who'll be replacing your onmyouji is Suzuka. She has her own upgradable skills, 3 are slightly different versions of her existing skills while another 3 will be passives. Her skills can up upgraded with Bells obtained in Treasure Hunting zones and by donating 30 Miasma Crystals to a Sacred Tree. The passives have extra effects that can be upgraded multiple times even after reaching max skill level.
Her skill description can be read on the wiki version of this guide.
Recommend upgrading Suzuka's special 2 first. After all skills are maxed, focus on doing additional upgrades to passive 2. If you want to min-max then only focus on special 2 and passive 2, ignore her other skills.
False Islet
During the event you can explore the map of Mt Suzuka by going "Treasure Hunting" or going to the "Evil Spirit Lairs" and "Sacred Trees".
Treasure Hunting
Everyday there will be a couple of these Treasure Hunting zone you can clear until all 4 Treasures have been found. Clearing a zone gives 10000 event currency and after clearing a most of the zones for a region, a Treasure will be revealed on the map. To clear an area you must clear all 2-4 activities in it, all activities cost 3 AP to do, can be done on auto and all give Miasma Crystals. Activities do not need to cleared all at once, you can leave and re-enter areas if you want to. Activities are;
Evil Spirits (Bosses): Defeat 1 of 3 types of bosses, can be done solo or co-op. There is a 3 minute time limit but HP carries over between attempts.
Evil Spirit: Has ~240k HP and has 5 minions. Drops ~5000 event currency, random 5-6* souls and evo materials.
Young Spirit: Has ~190k HP, has 2 minions and are very weak. Drops ~3000 event currency, random 4-6* souls and evo materials.
Fierce Spirit: Has ~640k HP, has 5 minions and can hit a little bit harder than a regular evil spirits. Drops ~13k event currency, 1 random 6* soul and evo materials.
Knowledgeable Evil Spirit (Quizzes): Answer the questions about Sealand. Answer incorrectly and you'll have to fight a boss. Depending on the question the boss might relate to it, ie if the question is about Kani then the boss might be Kani. Alternatively, you can skip answering altogether and just fight a boss (solo or co-op). On auto only the correct answers will picked for you.
These quizzes are not ones used for Demon Encounter. Rewards are the same regardless of whether you answer the quizzes correctly or fight the boss instead.
Sealand Daruma: Defeat the tanky daruma boss for daruma shards, can be done solo or co-op. Drops ~5000 event currency.
Treasure Paper Doll: A paper doll gives you rewards such as puzzle pieces, bells, R-SSR shiki shards and daruma shards.
Tamatebako (Turtle Reward Box): Get rewards such as bells and select 1 of 4 items (30 AP, 1-5 white daruma shards, R-SSR shikigami shards or 15k gold).
Tales of Mt Suzuka: Listen to the Sea Butterfly tell tales of Mt Suzuka and get rewards such as a bells, R-SSR shiki shards, daruma shards and gold.
Since Treasure Hunting zones are only available for the first few days of the event and the activities to clear them aren't very hard either, would not recommend doing it on auto. Save your mochi for other stuff.
Evil Spirit Lairs
Fight the bosses of these lairs, costs 5 AP to do and can be done on auto. A total of 100 Miasma Crystals and 100 additional event currency drops can be farmed from the bosses, this amount is shared between all 4 so there's no need to fight each one 100 times. They drop 5000 event currency, event AP, a Miasma Crystal, orochi scales and random 4-6* souls. The types of souls you'll get can be chosen from a daily selection, kind of like Choose Your Soul weekend events. The faster you defeat a boss, the more event currency you get.
*Special Note: Memory Scroll fragments can also be obtained as drops here, however the drop rate seems to be rather low.
Sacred Trees
Use Miasma Crystals to restore the shields protecting the trees. Get 200 event currency per 1 Miasma Crystal. Using 10-20-30 crystals gives 15 AP, 5 Mochi and 3 Bells.
True Island
To switch between the True Island and False Islet maps, tap the eye at the top of the screen. This can only be done when Evil Spirit Forces start attacking.
Everyday from 6 PM the server must fight Evil Spirit Forces to prevent them from attacking the Sacred Trees. The various Evil Spirit Forces coming out of their lairs all have their own stats for strength, HP and mobility. As the days go on there will be more and more of of them. Each one also has its own timer showing how long until they reach the nearest Sacred Tree. Challenging them requires 4 event AP, battles have a 2 minute time limit and HP is shared server-wide. Drops of event currency depend on how much damage you dealt, for reference; dealing ~3mil damage gives 7500 and dealing ~5mil gives 12000.
When the 4 Sacred Trees take too much damage, this bar at the top of the screen will decrease and the server-wide rewards for protecting the them will also decrease. To qualify for the server-wide rewards everyday, you must do a total of 8mil accumulated damage and/or donate 30 Miasma Crystals. The rewards can viewed by tapping the red daruma at the top of the screen or in the Battle Report tab.
Rewards for total remaining HP for the Sacred Trees:
100% - 10000 event currency, 3 black daruma shards and 40k gold
75% - 8000 event currency, 2 black daruma shards and 30k gold
50% - 5000 event currency, 1 black daruma shards and 20k gold
25% - 3000 event currency, a blue daruma and 10k gold
0% - 2000 event currency, a blue daruma and 10k gold
The rewards will sent out after reset and claimed from a paper doll in your courtyard.
Final Battle
After the last day (on the 2nd Wednesday of the event after maintenance), the server must work together to purify the Evil Spirit Corpse form of SP Ootakemaru to return him normal. There is no specified end date but we're intended to defeat the boss within a day.
When the boss enters a weakened state, the boss won't attack and we must purify the 4 objects on him (boat, sword, lantern, torii gate). The weakened state is basically a free damage phase, so if you're a beginner try to do much as damage as possible. The state ends when 1 of the 4 objects has been purified. When 4 objects are purified, the boss gains an new skill.
Costs 8 AP to challenge the boss and there's a 3 minute time limit. Can get ~1000 event currency per 1mil damage dealt. Before challenging the boss, can pick Kujira, Kani, Fuuri or Sasori to give you a buff. Can change the buff at any time.
Buffs;
Kujira: Suzuka has 60% chance to double crit when dealing crits.
Kani: Crit damage for all allies is increased by 100%.
Fuuri: Suzuka becomes immune to normal attacks.
Sasori: All allies deal 20% splash damage when dealing single target (and random target) attacks.
The rewards for total accumulated damage are; 50k gold, 50 AP, 50 gold orochi scales, 4* specoal kekkai/realm card, 3 black daruma shards, 10 skin tickets and an icon frame.
Handbook
Main Story: Can reread the main story of the event here.
Side Stories: Can reread the stories involving Yaobikuni, Uminari, Kujira and Kani Hime here.
Puzzle: Puzzle pieces received from paper dolls in Treasure Hunting zones will be automatically placed here. The total rewards for completing the puzzle is; 50000 event currency, a white daruma, a 3* white daruma, a 4* white daruma and a loading screen illustration.
Past Stories: Can reread the 15 short stories told by the Sea Butterfly encountered in the various regions of Mt Suzuka here.
Exchange Shop
The most notable items in the first tab are: lots of event AP, 2 event icon frames, 2 loading screen illustrations, new Sasori Onna skin, random SSR/SP, black daruma, 3-4-5* white daruma, lots of daruma (white, blue and red), 4 blue summon tickets, lots of skin tickets, totem tickets, demon souls, AP, mochi, lots of gold, special realm cards, etc. The icon frames are the exact same, one is still and one is animated.
The type of items that can be obtained from the packs are;
Jewelry: gold, jade, AP, evo materials, bio affection items, etc
Sculpture: R-SSR shikigami shards, gold and EXP buffs, etc
Painting: 6* souls, EXP souls, orochi scales, demon souls, totem zone tickets, etc
Gourmet: daruma, daruma shards, realm cards, bio affection items, soul and evo buffs, etc
Recommended Teams
Don't need very specific teams for this event, so as long as you already have teams that are regularly recommended for events you should be fine.
False Islet
Tumblr media
The Treasure Hunting zone bosses and lair bosses aren't very strong, so you should be able to use the same team to clear everything.
True Island
Tumblr media
If you don’t have Enmusubi, you could potentially use Shoyou/Bukkuman for the last 2 teams instead.
Final Battle
Tumblr media
As long as you have a team that does really well against a single enemy, you shouldn't have too much trouble with this.
If you’re not using a team that needs kyoukotsu on Ushi, then remember to swatch her set from shadow to watcher as the fight goes on.
As for which buff to pick, Kujira's and Kani's buffs are probably the best ones. If you're a beginner and you want to give Suzuka some survivability then pick Fuuri. If you're using Kinnara/SP Tama + double Youkinshi or double Shuten + Shira then Sasori's buff is an option.

The 21 Club, often simply 21, is an American traditional cuisine restaurant and former prohibition-era speakeasy, located at 21 West 52nd Street in New York City. The Bar Room includes a restaurant, a lounge and, as the name implies, a bar. The walls and ceiling of the Bar Room are covered with antique toys and sports memorabilia donated by famous patrons. The best known feature of 21 is the line of painted cast iron lawn jockey statues which adorns the balcony above the entrance. In the 1930s, some of the affluent customers of the bar began to show their appreciation by presenting 21 with jockeys painted to represent the racing colors of the stables they owned. There are 33 jockeys on the exterior of the building, and 2 more inside the doors.
‘21’ Club debuted America's original gourmet hamburger in 1950. It was cooked in duck fat, spiked with fennel seeds, and sold for a whopping $2.75 in an era of five- and 10-cent hamburgers. In dollar-adjusted value, that price is equivalent to over $25. The price today is $36, although the preparation has changed significantly — the current version of the ‘21’ Burger is closer to a classic hamburger, with a pickled relish and served on a brioche bun with fries on the side.
Belphegor had chosen this location (through Dean’s aid) because it served one of the best burgers in New York City while also being fancy enough that it might actually seem worthy of her. They rented out the whole restaurant for their date with Cupid, though that wasn’t to say that the rest of the restaurant would be empty. In fact, they made sure the whole restaurant would be full of loving couples. With Chastity’s help, they conducted numerous interviews with thousands of couples to make sure the restaurant would be full of only the most loving couples, so Cupid could be surrounded with a large amount of love and energy. After she finished breaking Lucifer and Levi’s curses, they imagined she would need something uplifting like that to energize her.
Once the restaurant owners understood what Belphegor was trying to do (and with a significant sum of money), they allowed Belphegor to decorate the restaurant however Belphegor wanted to. They planned out a design with Chastity’s help, but ultimately, most of the work was done by Belphegor themself. At the table Belphegor had designated as the one for their date, there were four chairs. In one of the chairs was a giant stuffed animals sloth, and in the chair opposite to it, there was a giant stack of boxes of chocolates. They put Cupid’s favorite flowers on all of the tables. Chastity had helped with that part. The flowers were actually from Cupid’s shop, but Chastity had told her that they were for a wedding. She’d even invented a pretend couple with pretend personalities to make the ruse more believable, ensuring Belphegor that Cupid had no idea the flowers were for her gift. There was one additional bouquet that Belphegor picked out themself for their table in particular. It wasn’t as cleanly or beautifully designed as the other flower arrangements, but they’d wanted to try their own hand at it too to show how much they were willing to do for her. They hung up decorations, and they cleared out some tables to make some room for a small dance floor and a stage for a band. They invited Snoop Dog, since he seemed to know a lot about love, and Bryson Bernard, who made the Cupid Shuffle and named himself after Cupid.
Belphegor was in their more confident form, dressed in a pink suit. There was a lot more effort put into their appearance this time. Their clothes weren’t oversized or wrinkled and were clearly tailored to Belphegor. Their shoes were actually tied, and their hair was neatly styled and combed. Chastity took several pictures of them in various spots both in the restaurant and out of it, along with pictures of the venue itself before she left Belphegor to wait on their date on their own.
Belphegor waited patiently at their table for Cupid to come and just entertained themself by listening to all the couples around them and watching how they interacted with each other in an attempt to understand how to be a better date for Cupid. They apparently had plenty of time for it since it was well over an hour since they’d asked Cupid to meet up with them. They hadn’t originally told her where she needed to go when they’d met up with her that morning. At the time, they’d focused more with supporting her and trying to instill her with confidence in herself. They’d brought her breakfast and kissed and bit her neck just like Dean had told them. They told her that they’d text her the directions of where to meet them once the time came for them to celebrate her birthday, so it could still stay a surprise to the very end. Then, they’d just left her to her work, so they didn’t distract her for too long. Maybe that interruption was part of why she was late, but it didn’t bother them too much. What she was doing was important, and they were proud of her no matter how long it took.
An hour started to turn into several hours, but they were still confident that Cupid would show up. “She’s coming,” they assured the staff of the 21 Club when they came to comfort Belphegor, apologizing for Cupid not being there. “She’s just running a little late is all.” They all gave Belphegor a look of pity, which they didn’t understand, and left them to continue waiting. Several people approached them like this as the hours went on. Nearly all of the couples thanked Belphegor for paying for their meals. They all assured Bells that even though this ‘didn’t work out,’ they’d still find the one someday. Belphegor didn’t know what they meant by that and primarily elected to ignore those kinds of comments altogether. There were starting to be fewer and fewer couples in the restaurant anyways, so they wouldn’t have to hear it for much longer.
Maybe she doesn’t really like you as much as you think she does, spoke the Void. Belphegor ignored them just as much, if not more. They might not have understood love that well yet, but they knew more than they did before. They were confident in the fact that Cupid loved them. She’d said it multiple times, and they’d always believe her. They knew, just as strongly, that they loved her too. It added to their resolve to stay here and wait for her no matter how long it took.
Another hour passed. All of the couples Belphegor had invited were gone now, replaced with other customers so the restaurant could keep its business going. Bryson had left too, and Snoop Dog had spent the past half hour sitting with Belphegor. “What I’m saying is fuck bitches.”
Belphegor nodded, not understanding what he was talking about but just agreeing with him. “Fuck bitches,” they repeated.
“Exactly!” He nodded and sighed. “Aight, I better get going. I’ve got another gig in an hour, but it was cool kickin’ it with you.”
“Fo shizzle,” Belphegor grinned, quoting what he’d often said to them. “I’ll tell you how it goes once Cupid gets here and we finish our date.”
Snoop Dog sighed and waved them off before taking off. “See you later, kid.”
“Bye!” they called after him and continued waiting for Cupid.
Eventually, it got to the point where it was near the time for the restaurant to close up. One of the waiters came out to talk to Belphegor. “So she still isn’t here yet?” he asked. Belphegor shook their head. “Well, you better order now, or you won’t be able to anymore. I can’t get her to show up any sooner, but what do you want to eat?”
Belphegor glanced over at Cupid’s empty seat. They didn’t want to order without her, but at this point they had to. “I’ll have the Speakeasy Steak Tartare, the 21 Burger, and the 21 Express.” They’d decided hours ago what they wanted to eat, but they just picked something for Cupid based on what they knew she liked. She would’ve wanted the burger, and the last thing was a dessert they could share once Cupid got here. The waiter went off to the kitchen to put in their order, and Belphegor continued waiting. After several minutes, Cupid still wasn’t here, so they sent her a text. They’d sent her several already.
[Sent 5:02 PM]: Hey, here’s the directions. [Link attached] [Sent 6:33 PM]: Don’t worry about being late. I’m still here. Take your time :) [Sent 8:21 PM]: In case you get here in the next minute or two, I’m just going to the bathroom really quick. I didn’t leave you, I promise. [Sent 10:49 PM]: They said I had to order now, so I just ordered for you. I hope that’s okay, but we can pick up something else somewhere else if you don’t like it.  [Sent 11:24 PM]: I hope things are going okay for you. I know you can do it! And if you need anything, just let me know. [Unsent 11:25 PM]: I lov
They closed their phone as the waiter arrived with their food. Belphegor thanked them, and they went off to help other tables. They waited a few more minutes, just in case Cupid got there, but in the end, they couldn’t hold back from eating their own food. They managed to finish it all, and Cupid’s food still remained untouched. As it got closer to closing time, it became clear that she wasn’t going to make it in time to eat her food at the restaurant. Belphegor asked for a to-go box, and put both her food and their dessert away. They at least had enough decency to not eat dessert without her. Still, they waited. They waited until the restaurant wouldn’t let them wait anymore.
“I’m sorry she stood you up,” said their waiter. “But honestly, with as much as you did, if she stood you up, she doesn’t deserve you.”
Belphegor scowled. “She deserves everything!” they snapped. “And you don’t know anything about her.”
The waiter held up their hands defensively. “Okayyy, but you still need to go. We’re closing for the night. I’ll have someone help you carry your things out, and you can wait outside for her if you want, but we’ve got to finish cleaning here.” Belphegor sighed, calming down a little to do what the waiter asked. The remaining staff carried their things outside, and Belphegor sat on the steps to the restaurant, still waiting.

As such, when inferior people are heinous and unmanageable, they do not look after their parents and relatives. When a single person does evil, the calamity catches up with the combined family.
We are the people's father and mother, and are deeply dismayed and aggrieved. From now on and afterwards, except for planning rebellion, great treason, violating the principles, and fleeing outside, the crime will stop at their person and that is all. Now that virtue extends to different regions, and patterns and standards are about to be as one, to be lenient with punishment and magnanimous with prohibitions, is it not also good?

November 5
(AM)
In the moments when I’m lonely and longing for a life partner who lives with me and cooks for me and prods me to do the many projects around the house that need doing, I imagine what it will be like to make room in my house for another person. I’ve lived a long time, I contain multitudes, and each of those multitudes requires at least one room’s décor dedicated to it. This décor includes lighting, wall art, and hella knickknacks, which I’m learning are perhaps privileges and not rights. I am a terrible housekeeper. I keep the kitchen and the bathroom mostly liveable at all times, I scoop litterboxes regularly, and I do clean up obvious messes that are clearly out of place (cat vomit, food splatter, errant toiletries). I even keep up mostly with sweeping as I like to pad around barefoot or in socks.
But when it comes to, say, vacuuming the cat hair off the couch or dusting, I am Not Good. I’ve also lived alone for so long that I’ve gotten in the horrible habit of embarking on a Project – hanging knickknack boxes; reconditioning my leather goods in the wake of The Mold Issue (it was penicillin-ish, not the black stuff, praise the baby Jesus) – and quitting part of the way through (usually because of time constraints and a commitment of some kind), leaving the evidence scattered in my wake. (Currently on my floor are a pile of shoes, boots, and purses and some leather cleaner. My knickknack boxes and said knickknacks are strewn across the dining room table and the hearth of my wood stove. My intentions are good. I know that I want to complete these projects and honor the energy I spent starting them. Sadly, motivation and energy are not available On Demand in my life, and significant time elapses between the beginning of the project and the cleaning up of the aftermath.
I have cats. Cats come with shed hair and the occasional DIY beach simulation beyond the litter box. Dust happens. It happens with alarming regularity and perseverance. It’s most pronounced on the shelves that don’t get touched very often (all the stuff that’s just for looking at; the bookshelves that are too rarely visited). As my media consumption leans further toward streaming, dust has enveloped the stereo, CD racks, and TV console. If anyone besides me saw the state to which I’ve allowed my home to be taken over by the assorted cobwebs (imagine Ms. Havisham’s tablescape), I would have the sense to be ashamed. I would also shrug, rail against the social expectations that single home-owning women are expected to meet, and usher my guest out the door to attend whatever function has brought them over in the first place.
At this point it is fair to ask why I don’t just hire a cleaning service. Well. Remember that whole lack of energy and motivation thing? There are conditions in which I am willing to live, but I would never ask someone to clean up after me until my home was in some sort of organized and settled initial state. It’s been at least two and a half years since I can honestly say this has been the case. (That’s not even including the dresser drawer that is almost certainly on the bedroom floor.
First, the cats moved in. I took in the cats when they were three and their owner was moving out of state. His situation involved temporary lodging with a friend and the cats weren’t welcome, so Jack and Lily (formerly Jill) came to live with me. When they came, I’d been a cat-free home for just about a year. Long enough to get rid of litterboxes and food bowls, but not long enough to pull up the wall-to-wall carpet the house came with. And I really wanted to get the carpet up, as my dearly departed Bo, who is really the reason I bought this house, was bulimic for most of his life. And his life was a long one, so he had his own crotchety habits, which included peeing in places that were not the litter box. I cleaned up behind him to the best of my ability, but my guess was that new cats would be able to tell he’d left parts of himself behind. (Besides the handful of whiskers that I collected when they fell out. Did I mention I’m a witch?)
Since the cat acquisition was, on my timeline, relatively rushed, and my bookshelves and couch are heavy, I made the executive decision to cut what carpet I could get to away and go back for the remnants later. The cats are now six, this is officially their Gotcha month, and three years later, we’re all still living with those remnants and the exposed paint splattered plywood floor revealed by removing the carpet. (We’ve also learned a hard lesson about how much insulation that carpet provided in the winters since its removal.)
I had every intention of putting down new flooring, but that requires money. Which I had more of before The Mold Incident.
The Mold Incident announced itself most obviously on a leather duffel bag I brought home from India (21 inches long for $45 US and I had acquired more than my suitcase could hold) and a leather backpack I got in Italy (25 years ago). A person other than myself would have assessed and remediated the situation in a timely fashion, I imagine. I know people exist who don’t have anxiety about phone calls and who get things done rather than letting them pile up, and I wish one of them lived in my house. (Future significant other, I’m looking at [for] you.) I, on the other hand, let the situation continue to worsen until it was obvious that the problem was not going away, no matter how hard I ignored it.
One mold inspection later, I was assured that the mold was of the friendly green-ish antibiotic kind and not the deadly black kind, and assured that the problem was simply one of humidity. Encapsulating my crawl space and installing drainage and a sump pump would keep the mold from coming back. (Remember those two thousand-year floods that destroyed historic Ellicott City twice in three years? I live up the hill from historic Ellicott City and my town also flooded in that second storm. I knew that water was sitting in my crawl space when I saw a wet spot on my bedroom floor.)
Cleaning the mold that was already in the house would cost, I was told, somewhere around $5K. Or I could do it myself, using a one-to-one combination of white vinegar and blue Dawn. All I had to do was wipe down all of the walls, ceilings, furniture, and exposed surface. And launder every article of clothing in my closet and coat rack. A friend lent me a garment rack that lived in my dining room as I took everything out of the closet and put back the mold-free stuff, culling for things that could go to donation bags because my closet was Way Too Full.
I finally gave back the garment rack, but the pile of shoes and bags remains. And the cleaning every exposed surface fizzled out (though the bucket, rags, and ingredients remain at the ready). Encapsulating the crawl space required getting in there and cleaning everything out (the pile of mildewed insulation was…something), which required pulling up part of the floor in the spare room. (Where my contractor saw the places in the floor likely to cave in and installed three new joists to prevent that. He also replaced the part of the wall in the closet that was secretly a hole hidden under siding and, while he was at it, finished the siding on the house that was begun when he built me a new utility room.)
Are you tracking the costs that are adding up? Clearing the crawl space, installing the joists, hanging the siding, and finally the encapsulation itself. Altogether, I basically bought a new economy car and shoved it under my house. The only part of it I can see is the siding, and that’s not even the color I really wanted (because the color I wanted was “premium”; for the sake of all you hold holy get the big things the way you really want them if you possibly can [that should probably go for the small things too]). And my floors are still paint splattered plywood.
(PM)
The hanging of the siding knocked lots of pictures and knickknacks from the walls, which led to the removal of a shelf that held the knickknacks, which revealed paint that needs to be touched up. Well, there’s no point in doing the floors until the walls are painted. Okay, but there’s a fist-sized hole in the electrical panel in the spare room that needs to be patched first. Which I can finally get to now that the HVAC is installed. Did I mention the new HVAC system? Maybe it was a new midline car, one third of which is in the attic.
Where was I?
I’m learning, as I contemplate all of the things I have to move and decide whether to keep and clean, that ownership is one thing, but maintenance of stuff is a different issue. Maybe this is a thing other people learn when they are much younger. Addict. Depressed. Brain issues. Bear with me. I understand that cars involve maintenance costs; so do pets and children. And houses in general require upkeep that isn’t associated with other living situations. I knew relatively early on that I wouldn’t be able to keep up with the costs of having a kid – even if I could make it work financially, there are no days off in bed when you’re a parent. I knew I’d made the right decision when a friend told me that for him, parenting made the highs higher and the lows lower. I can’t afford any lower lows.
So I don’t have kids, because on my own, I can’t afford them. I have a 15-year-old car that’s paid for, but also requires the occasional costly repair. It’s easier for me to coax occasional lump sums than a new monthly payment out of my budget, so I hold on to the car and maintain it to the best of my ability. I have a lot of books, which are pretty self-sufficient once they’re shelved, and theoretically it’s easy to wipe the dust from a bookshelf, unless you are a person who has so much stuff some of it gets propped up in front of the books. See if you can guess if I am that kind of person. (Spoiler: I am.)

40 Small Things You Can Start Doing to Save Our Planet
You don’t have to pack up and live in a van or a tiny house and start a zero waste life (although you totally can if that’s your jam!) to reduce your CO2 emissions. There are plenty of things you can start doing right now that will help.
1. Turn off your water while shaving or brushing your teeth. Seriously, you should already be doing this.
2. Carpool, take the bus, take the train, bike, or walk where possible. Yes, I know walking home from work in the summer sucks, but it will suck a whole lot more when the earth is 2 degrees hotter. If your school or work is too far away to do this regularly, try finding parking further away from your destination and park there for the day. Not only will this help cut down on your fuel usage, but you get in some exercise as a bonus.
3. Shop locally sourced products. Did you know that the majority of resources involved in making a product go to the production and distribution of it, and not the final product itself? Buying locally sourced products not only helps boost the local economy, but also cuts down on the energy and resources needed to transport the product to its destination.
4. Speaking of shopping, bring reusable bags! According to the Center for Biological Diversity, it only takes approximately 14 bags for the equivalent of gas to drive 1 mile, and only 1% of plastic bags are returned for recycling. Not only do single use bags use fossil fuels for production, but they also end up as toxic waste and landfill. Reusable bags can be bought for as little as 99c each, and can be used hundreds of times. Many are even biodegradable to ensure they don’t end up as long term landfill.
5. Use the 4 R’s. Many people believe in the 3 R’s, but did you know there’s a fourth? Refuse. Refuse to use unnecessary products that create single use waste, such as single use grocery bags. Reduce the amount of products you buy and waste you use, when it’s impractical or impossible to eliminate them entirely. Reuse whatever you can, such as jars and cans. I’ll have an article soon about 50 household items that can be easily reused. And finally, recycle whatever you can’t reuse any further.
6. Read up on the recycling rules for your municipality. Chances are, that pizza box might not be recyclable after all. Many areas have rules regarding items that were used to store food, such as chip packets and pizza boxes, as the oil may be in the cardboard. Read up on the rules so you know what you can actually recycle, and whether you should be washing and taking apart bottles before you toss them.
7. Replace leaky taps and pipes. If you have a single leaky faucet that drips once every 6 seconds, that’s 347 gallons (almost 1,314 litres) a year dripping out your tap. Replace or seal them where possible.
8. Turn off appliances at the wall when they aren’t in use, and turn off lights when you aren’t in the room.
9. Cut down your meat intake. Don’t get me wrong, I love meat. However, meat agriculture takes up a gross amount of land, water, and resources. The emissions from the meat industry outweigh the emissions of all cars, trains, boats, and planes combined. You don’t have to go cold-turkey (pun fully intended), but cutting down your meat consumption to only a couple meals a week can greatly help. According to earthday.org, if the entire U.S. did not eat meat or cheese for just one day a week, it would be the equivalent of taking 7.6 million cars off the road. Try going meat free for one or more days per week.
10. Use a reusable water bottle. Stainless steel and aluminium water bottles (such as Hydroflask or Kathmandu, not sponsored, I just like the brands) are great as they have a long life cycle, can be recycled, and you don’t risk BPA and other chemicals leeching into your water from plastic. If you don’t live somewhere with good water, buy an under sink filter or even a Brita. I prefer under sink filters as they’re easy to install and in the long run they’re cheaper and produce less waste, but both options are better than buying cases of water bottles.
11. Put a bucket or old ice cream container in your sink to catch runoff. My grandma, who was raised during the depression, has always done this. Use it to collect any water that doesn’t have contaminants or soap, so you can pour it on houseplants or in your garden.
12. Use non-toxic biodegradable laundry and dishwashing products so that you aren’t washing toxic chemicals down the drain.
13. Bring a reusable thermos or coffee cup to get your coffee. If you don’t make coffee at home, try bringing your own thermos or coffee cup to your local coffee joint. Most stores will be happy to make your drink in there, and some stores even offer discounts for you doing so!
14. Wash your hair less. Not only is this good for your hair, but it also means less toxic waste getting into the sewer. Many people (including me) are ditching shampoo altogether and just using conditioner, but if you can’t go without your shampoo, try to reduce your hair washing to once a week.
15. If it’s yellow, let it mellow! If you’re just doing a Number One, you really don’t need to flush every time. An average toilet uses 1.4 gallons of water for a flush (but if you have a toilet dating before 1995, you may be using up to 7 gallons per flush!), if you pee 10 times a day, that’s 14 gallons of water. If you flush every second pee, you’ll save 7 gallons of water per day, or 2,555 gallons per year.
16. Air dry clothes instead of using the dryer. My dryer is strictly reserved for emergencies. Even in the smallest apartment, you can find a foldable clothesline that suits your needs. Place it next to a vent or radiator for maximum drying abilities.
17. Have a baby? Use reusable cloth diapers. One child can use anywhere between five to eight thousand diapers. That’s a lot of landfill.
18. Plant a tree. Did you know that the average person would need to plant almost 9 trees per month for their life to offset their carbon emissions? The good news is that even planting just one tree will help. Read up on what trees and native plants are goo for your area.
19. Use cruise control when in level areas. Cruise control can seriously help reduce your fuel consumption, but it works best in level areas. If you’re driving in a hilly terrain, it’s best to use your old fashioned gas pedal.
20. Getting a new car? Consider an electric, or at least a hybrid. The electric and hybrid car markets are expanding, and now you can even get hybrid 4WD’s. Obviously not practical if you’re happy with your current car, but if you’re in the market, check it out. Compare gas mileage and make an informed decision.
21. Buy secondhand and thrift. It’s cheap and you can find some great deals and gorgeous things. Need I say more?
22. On the same note, regularly donate anything you don’t need instead of throwing it away.
23. Try reusable menstrual management. Reusable cloth pads and period cups are a lot better than they sound. I was a skeptic, but after switching to a cup, I’ll never look back. Not only am I saving money, but I’m also saving an estimated 437 tampons per year.
24. Recycle clothing hangers. Many clothing hangers aren’t actually recyclable, but as it turns out, some dry cleaners will gladly take your old hangers to use.
25. Reduce your junk mail. Get bank statements emailed to you instead of mailed, and contact any junk mail services to tell them you no longer want their mail. Unsubscribe from mailing lists.
26. Get rechargeable batteries. While we’re at it, did you know there are battery rechargers that can recharge non-rechargeables? Life. Changing.
27. Don’t run the dryer, washing machine, or dishwasher unless it’s full.
28. Replace all your bulbs with energy efficient LEDs.
29. Maintain your car. If, like me, you do have to regularly drive a non-electric car, you could be wasting a considerable amount of fuel due to your car not being maintained.
30. Reduce the weight of your car. I know it sounds stupid, but added weight really does change your fuel efficiency. I’m not suggesting you rip out your spare tire and back seats, but you should remove roof racks or storage pods when you’re not using them.
31. Use both sides of a piece of paper when printing or taking notes.
32. Wash your laundry in cold water when possible. Unless your garment tag specifically advises against it, your fancy blouse can probably be washed cold.
33. Use matches instead of lighters. The wood of a match will degrade long before that plastic BIC.
34. Dim your screen and turn off data when it’s not needed. You’ll save on your phone or laptop’s battery usage, and in turn, need to charge them less.
35. Put less on your plate and go back for seconds when needed. No, this isn’t a diet tip. Approximately a third of what Americans put on their plate will go in the garbage. Put less on your plate, and only go back for more if you’re still hungry. Put leftovers in an airtight container and eat them the next day.
36. Ease off on your heating and AC. There’s no shame in wearing jackets around the house, but even if you’re not that extreme, you could save a lot of energy by changing the temperature by just 1 degree.
37. Buy paper stick cotton tips (Q-tips) instead of ones with plastic sticks.
38. Eat more raw foods. This will either reduce your propane or electricity usage, depending on your oven or stove.
39. See some trash on the sidewalk? Pick it up.
40. Check your home for drafts and air leaks. It will make your heating and cooling system more efficient.
I know these all sound like small or useless things, but if we all take a few seconds and try out a few of these methods, it will make a difference. Every bit helps.

                     —————————————————————————-
                                            PHYSICAL ASPECTS
BODY TYPE: Alex is short and naturally skinny, but he works out regularly to get some muscle and body mass on him. He’s still slim, still shorter in stature but he is strong. HAIR: A brown that borders on dirty blonde with hints of red at times. It has a natural curl to it that will grow out of control if he lets it. For the past four years or so he’s taken to keeping it cut short to avoid curls but that means haircuts at LEAST once a month. If he misses a few haircuts he will take to wearing a beanie. EYES: Large, round eyes, down turned at the outer edges but very expressive. Because of this he tends to keep a neutral expression, bordering on RBF (resting bitch face) with a concerned furrow to his brow. He’s been told he has a deer in the headlight looks when surprised. They’re a bright green color. SKIN: Pale skin with an underlying olive complexion from his mom. If he goes out in the sun he has the tendency to tan rather than burn. Alex’s skin is smooth for his age, he’s often mistaken for being up to a decade younger than he is.  HEIGHT: 5′7” WEIGHT: Anywhere from 140-155 due to his muscle mass. When he stops working out he drops the weight FAST and has been as low as 125 lbs before. SIZES: He has no idea.

                                                       FAMILY

        —————————————————————————-
                                                        SKILLS
PHYSICAL
ENDURANCE - Bordering on absurd. Alex will endure more than he should. It could get him killed even (hahaha). He can take a beating and his endurance for mental manipulation is fairly strong too, but he’ll cave mentally before he does physically most likely. If someone can be patient with him, they can exhaust him.
HAND TO HAND COMBAT - Very good. Better than the average person. He has been doing wrestling since he was a kid, boxing since high school, and took some akido in college. Boxing is where he excels.
GUNS AND WEAPONS TRAINING - Alex knows how to handle a gun. He was in a shooting club throughout college, skeet specifically. He got into timed course shooting with handguns on his own. Alex took to the sport with a natural inclination. He’s better with a rifle/long distance than handguns but he is capable at both.
ATHLETIC - He lifts weights and does strength training on his own to stay fit, to keep muscle mass. Hannah forced him to go running each morning and he keeps active on the road with push ups, burpees, star jumps, anything really. He doesn’t want to be skinny, which his body naturally trends towards without work put in.
NON-PHYSICAL
FAST THINKING / INTUITION / ADAPTABILITY - Alex has proven time and time again he can adjust to a situation and will try to think his way out of it. When at the Revival he keeps calm, listens, watches the crowd, and picks up on the ONE guy openly carrying. Alex keeps him in his line of sight and when Mark threatens to blow their cover he steps in and with a single word “Relax” he calms him down. He remembers that they have a pocket cam, he is able to figure out they can upload to the cloud backup he has that will automatically push the upload to the YouTube channel. Alex takes things in stride and will remain optimistic, probably because of his ability to quickly analyze a situation and come up with a plan or way out. Where others lose hope he holds strong to it.
CALM IN STRESSFUL SITUATIONS - To a dangerous degree it may seem. This will get expanded upon in major experiences but Alex keeps a level head in almost any situation. Part of why he did so well with the subject matter of their vlogs was his ability to calm people down and maintain that calm himself as well. He only panics when he loses all control of a situation or sees someone else getting hurt or possibly hurt. For example when he can’t prevent Mark from being dragged to the river for the baptism, it’s the first glimpse we have of Alex panicking, trying to make a deal. “We won’t say shit!!” He tries to come to an agreement that saves Mark from getting hurt. He fails but he tries to appease the Baptist.
COOPERATION- Alex is a very stubborn individual but he is great at getting along with other people. He has spent years working on the vlog alongside his two best friends and so he’s gotten used to working in a group, so long as the group is people he trusts. Alex is a great person to collaborate on and an easy mind to bounce ideas off of but his sometimes blunt honesty turns people off of him or his advice.

                                                     MAJOR EXPERIENCES
[ TW for some childhood bullying/mental trauma ref. ]
Alex was born with some health complications as a premature child, and his mom had preeclampsia as well. For the first three years of Alex’s life he was in and out of the hospital due to asthma and respiratory complications. Eventually he grew out of his asthma, but it’s something his parents never let him forget. That he is LUCKY to be alive.
From a young age Alex was taught the value of humanity and compassion. His parents would remind him that they worked hard to get where they were to have the income and money they did. His paternal grandparents didn’t have an easy life and immigrating to the United States had been a struggle, even with his grandfather being a well-established doctor. His mom and dad did not want him to take for granted what he was given. From the archery lessons to Hebrew School and everything in between. He remembers when he first understood the impact of donating some of his presents to kids in need on his birthday and the holidays. When he turned ten he stopped accepting gifts altogether except from his grandparents and would instead volunteer with his parents at shelters or the hospitals they respectively worked at.
On that note, he did grow up immersed in medicine but he had NO desire to pursue it. His father was disappointed at first, yes, but he supported Alex in whatever he decided would catch his eye. Neither his mom nor dad tried to force him into a field like medicine when he wasn’t intrigued by it. He did want to do something to help other people, but medicine wasn’t how he wanted to go about it. Because while his parents were there for him as much as they could be, they still had a good amount of absences because of their work and how often they would travel for it. His father with doctors without borders and his mother to conferences. Medicine had to be your LIFE and Alex was too interested in everything else to commit to it.
His first episode happened when he was thirteen years old. School hadn’t been going well; he was bullied for his curly hair, his big eyes and small stature. Leading up to the holiday break it’d gotten especially bad. Alex had been feeling strange for days, in a deep sadness, a sensation of approaching dread. Nothing felt real, it all felt pointless, and he was struggling to connect with those around him. Around this time the whole family was visiting for Hanukkah, including all of his cousins. The kids were playing off on their own and Alex, being the youngest was being picked on, as usual. They teased him for his big green eyes and how expressive they were and so on and so forth. Kid stuff. Alex walked over to his eldest cousin, seventeen at the time and proceeded to beat the shit out of him. Not even with just his fists, but with the nearest piece of furniture he could grab – a candlestick. The other kids didn’t do anything, too shocked by the sudden outburst of violence. One of the girls screamed and by the time the adults got there Alex had stopped hitting, but his cousin’s nose was broken, a couple of teeth lost and hairline fractures to boot. He was unconscious.  Hanukkah was called off, and the family spent their respective holidays in the hospital or at home. Alex was admitted to a hospital to try and figure out what happened to make him respond the way he did. When asked he simply said it wasn’t real and that his cousin wasn’t there. It was just someone or something but not someone he knew. Just shapes. Alex hadn’t even recognized his cousin’s face or really taken in the words said prior. It was all a blur of sounds and shapes, and colors but none of it connected to him. Eventually he talked about the excessive bullying at school, about how he’d been locked in a janitor’s closet after they’d spilled some of the cleaning supplies, how his lungs burned, and other events. He’d been keeping it from his parents and the teachers, not wanting to cause a problem and figuring he could handle it. Alex didn’t think them a big deal, but the psychologists pointed towards the months of bullying as a potential trigger for what had happened. He was switched to a different school soon after, but he refused to ever name the kids that had left him with bruises and mental trauma he figured wasn’t that big of a deal.
Alex was diagnosed with a minor dissociative disorder brought on by the general stress and anxiety of being bullied. His derealization of the situation with his cousin compounded the situation and he was put on medication. Eventually, after years of therapy he got through the worst of his symptoms but he still struggles with this now and then, and he was never the same. Alex can swing between over-empathizing or detaching himself, he tries to stay in the middle ground, but it isn’t easy.
After that event he never really smiled the way he used to as a kid. His smiles became reserved, muted expressions. Of course he could still smile and he could pretend to be happy but Alex crafted a very specific persona. One that would come in handy for the vlog he’d later help found. He’s a good person at heart, wants to help others, is comfortable with his friends, but he still struggles.
When Alex left for college his parents were concerned about him potentially relapsing into another dissociative episode. To try and prevent this from happening he threw himself into EVERYTHING feet first. Clubs, classes, events, everything. Alex had his own dorm room and being by himself held the potential for a relapse so he kept busy and was often seen out on the campus green or in the library. Very quickly people grew to like him and his casual but genuine attitude. When he met Hannah the two clicked instantly and he was so happy to have a friend to spend time with. Sara was met within the next week and another friend was made. He would talk with other people but these were the first two he connected to and the only ones that mattered to him ultimately.
In addition to his activity on campus he was busy online. Alex was ridiculously popular on vine, to the point of being recognized as he walked to his classes. He had a YouTube channel that was a borderline casual blog/how-to do things that covered a variety of topics and had hilarious failures. His instagram was popular by proxy of vine and he was into the hundreds of thousands of subscribers across his different platforms. He was accepted into the journalism school around this time but the courses seemed easy and like something he could teach himself so he opted for challenging himself with linear algebra and flowcharts in computer science. Nonetheless he had a love for journalism and digging into the heart of a story, along with a passion for technology. Which was how TRUTH SEEKING TRIO STARTED. He was at a party when he overheard some frat guys bragging about their fraternities history – including having KILLED a guy. Alex was skeptical but intrigued. He would end up getting Sara involved with his conspiracy theory about them ACTUALLY having killed a guy. The two would spend late nights at the library researching the fraternities’ past while Hannah was roped in as well, playing reconnaissance and watching the group. Alex ended up infiltrating as a new ‘brother’ and after a few months he actually found a skeleton in the basement. Literally. A skeleton. The police were called, alumni were arrested and the trio skyrocketed to fame after they posted a video that recorded all of their experiences to Alex’s YouTube channel.
Shortly thereafter they began taking on more stories, more urban legends, recording and posting it to a newly minted name of TRUTH SEEKING TRIO. Their videos would go viral, their personalities on camera were well liked and Alex had the benefit of a strong online following already. Eventually they moved from urban legends to real life issues. People began writing them, asking for their sleuthing help when the cops had turned a blind eye or the law wouldn’t help them anymore.
The last of the letters they received was from a guy named Mark, out of Hope County, Montana.

India's Education Sector - Back to School
Tumblr media
India's US$40b education market is experiencing a surge in investment. Capital, both local and international, and innovative legal structures are changing the face of this once-staid sector
The liberalization of India's industrial policy in 1991 was the catalyst for a wave of investment in IT and infrastructure projects. Rapid economic growth followed, sparking a surge in demand for skilled and educated workers. This, combined with the failure of the public system to provide high quality education and the growing willingness of the burgeoning middle class to spend money on schooling, has transformed India's education sector into an attractive and fast-emerging opportunity for foreign investment Child Education Allowance Latest order pdf.
Despite being fraught with regulatory restrictions, private investors are flocking to play a part in the "education revolution". A recent report by CLSA (Asia-Pacific Markets) estimated that the private education market is worth around US$40 billion. The K-12 segment alone, which includes students from kindergarten to the age of 17, is thought to be worth more than US$20 billion. The market for private colleges (engineering, medical, business, etc.) is valued at US$7 billion while tutoring accounts for a further US$5 billion.
Other areas such as test preparation, pre-schooling and vocational training are worth US$1-2 billion each. Textbooks and stationery, educational CD-ROMs, multimedia content, child skill enhancement, e-learning, teacher training and finishing schools for the IT and the BPO sectors are some of the other significant sectors for foreign investment in education.
Opportunity beckons
The Indian government allocated about US$8.6 billion to education for the current financial year. But considering the significant divide between the minority of students who graduate with a good education and the vast majority who struggle to receive basic elementary schooling, or are deprived of it altogether, private participation is seen as the only way of narrowing the gap. Indeed, it is estimated that the scope for private participation is almost five times the amount spent on education by the government.
CLSA estimates that the total size of India's private education market could reach US$70 billion by 2012, with an 11% increase in the volume and penetration of education and training being offered. The K-12 segment is the most attractive for private investors. Delhi Public School operates approximately 107 schools, DAV has around 667, Amity University runs several more and Educomp Solutions plans to open 150 K-12 institutions over the next four years. Coaching and tutoring K-12 students outside school is also big business with around 40% of urban children in grades 9-12 using external tuition facilities.
Opening the doors
Private initiatives in the education sector started in the mid-90s with public-private partnerships set up to provide information and communications technology (ICT) in schools. Under this scheme, various state governments outsourced the supply, installation and maintenance of IT hardware and software, as well as teacher training and IT education, in government or government-aided schools. The central government has been funding this initiative, which follows the build-own-operate-transfer (BOOT) model, under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan and ICT Schools programmes. Private companies such as Educomp Solutions, Everonn Systems, and NIIT were among the first to enter the ICT market, which is expected to be worth around US$1 billion by 2012.
Recently, the central government invited private participation in over 1,000 of its industrial training institutes and offered academic and financial autonomy to private players. Companies such as Tata, Larsen & Toubro, Educomp and Wipro have shown keen interest in participating in this initiative.
Regulatory roadblocks
Education in India is regulated at both central and state government levels. As a result, regulations often differ from state to state. K-12 education is governed by the respective State School Education Act and the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Rules and Regulations concerning affiliation and/or the rules of any other affiliating body. Under current regulations, only not-for-profit trusts and societies registered under Societies Registration Act, 1860, and companies registered under section 25 of the Companies Act, 1956, qualify to be affiliated with the CBSE and to operate private schools.
While the K-12 segment accounts for the lion's share of India's educational market, weaving through the complex regulatory roadmap to qualify for affiliation poses serious difficulties for investors. The CBSE requires privately-funded schools to be non-proprietary entities without any vested control held by an individual or members of a family. In addition, a school seeking affiliation is expected to have a managing committee controlled by a trust, which should approve budgets, tuition fees and annual charges. Any income accrued cannot be transferred to the trust or school management committee and voluntary donations for gaining school admission are not permitted. Schools and higher education institutions set up by the trust are entitled to exemptions from income tax, subject to compliance with section 11 of the Income Tax Act, 1961. In order to qualify for tax exemptions, the trust needs to ensure that its predominant activity is to serve the charitable purpose of promoting education as opposed to the pursuit of profit.
Alternative paths
Alternative routes do exist for investors seeking to avoid the web of regulatory barriers that constrain their involvement. Sectors such as pre-schools, private coaching and tutoring, teacher training, the development and provision of multimedia content, educational software development, skill enhancement, IT training and e-learning are prime sectors in which investors can allocate their funds. These areas are attractive because while they relate closely to the profitable K-12 segment, they are largely unregulated. As such, they make attractive propositions for private investors interested in taking advantage of the burgeoning demand for quality education. Companies such as Educomp Solutions, Career Launcher, NIIT, Aptech, and Magic Software, are market leaders in these fields. Educomp recently acquired a large number of educational institutes and service providers across India. It has also formed joint ventures with leading higher education groups, including Raffles Education Singapore, for the establishment of higher education institutions and universities in India and China. Furthermore, it has entered into a multi-million dollar collaboration with Ansal Properties and Infrastructure to set up educational institutions and schools across the country and closed an US$8.5 million deal to acquire Eurokids International, a private provider of pre-school educational services in India. Gaja Capital India, an education-centric fund, has completed the funding of three education services companies in India. NIIT and Aptech, meanwhile, are engaged in the IT training business.
Core Projects and Technology is also focusing heavily on India and is likely to bid to takeover, upgrade and run public schools for specified periods on a public-private partnership basis.
Higher hurdles
While state governments are largely responsible for providing K-12 education in India, the central government is accountable for major policy decisions relating to higher education. It provides grants to the University Grants Commission (UGC) and establishes central universities in the country. The UGC coordinates, determines and maintains standards and the release of grants. Upon the UGC's recommendation, the central government declares the status of an educational institution, which once authorized, is entitled to award degrees.
State governments are responsible for the establishment of state universities and colleges and has the power to approve the establishment of private universities through State Acts. All private universities are expected to conform to the UGC guidelines to ensure that certain minimum standards are maintained.
Amity University in Uttar Pradesh is one of the private universities to open its doors. It was approved by the Uttar Pradesh state legislature on 12 January 2005 under section 2(f) of the University Grants Commission Act.
Not-for-profit and anti-commercialization concepts dominate higher education fee structures. To prevent commercialization and profit-making, institutions are prohibited from claiming returns on investments. This, however, does not pose a hurdle for universities interested in mobilizing resources to replace and upgrade their assets and services. A fixation of fees is required in accordance with the guidelines prescribed by the UGC and other concerned statutory bodies. For this purpose, the UGC may request the relevant information from the private university concerned, as prescribed in the UGC (Returns of Information by Universities) Rules, 1979.
In line with the policy on Fee Fixation in Private Unaided Educational Institutions Imparting Higher and Technical Education, two types of fees are required: tuition fees and development fees. Tuition fees are intended to recover the actual cost of imparting education without becoming a source of profit for the owner of the institution. While earning returns on investment would not be permissible, development fees may provide an element of partial capital cost recovery to the management, serving as a resource for upkeep and replacement.
Legal precedents
In order to be awarded university status by the UGC, institutions must comply with the objectives set forth in the Model Constitution of the Memorandum of Association/Rules, and ensure that no portion of the income accrued is transferred as profit to previous or existing members of the institution. Payments to individuals or service providers in return for any service rendered to the institute are, however, not regulated.
In this context recent court judgments on private universities are relevant. The Supreme Court, in Unnikrishnan JP v State of Andhra Pradesh, introduced a scheme regulating the admission and levy of fees in private unaided educational institutions, particularly those offering professional education. The ruling was later notified in the fee policy.
Subsequently, in the case of Prof Yashpal and Anr v State of Chattisgarh and Ors in 2005, the Supreme Court assailed the Chattisgarh government's legislation and amendments which had been abused by many private universities. It was contended that the state government, simply by issuing notifications in the Gazette, had been establishing universities in an indiscriminate and mechanical manner without taking into account the availability of any infrastructure, teaching facilities or financial resources. Further, it was found that the legislation (Chhattisgarh Niji Kshetra Vishwavidyalaya (Sthapana Aur Viniyaman) Adhiniyam, 2002) had been enacted in a manner which had completely abolished any kind of UGC control over private universities.

Post-election grief is real, and here are 5 coping strategies – including getting back into politics
Shortly after Abraham Lincoln was elected on Nov. 6, 1860, a girl from Alabama, Sarah Espy, documented her issues in her diary. She wrote that she felt “grieved,” and defined why. “For it’s thought now to be certainty that Lincoln…and that the Southern States are going to withdraw from the Union. If that’s the case, it’s the starting of woe.”
Whereas the actual issues change, each election triggers misery for some individuals. That definitely held true for the earlier two presidential elections: Many People have been deeply upset following the victories of Barack Obama in 2008 and of Donald Trump in 2016.
Signs of melancholy – unhappiness, loneliness and fatigue – appear to be frequent responses to electoral loss. This will show to be a very widespread phenomenon within the aftermath of the 2020 election, given the nation’s contentious political divide.
Individuals don’t sometimes discuss politics in the identical sentence as grief and woe, however the two are extra carefully linked than we would understand. I’m a political scientist who research how psychological well being shapes the best way residents assume and interact with politics. In my work, I’ve discovered that residents that suffer from melancholy are much less politically engaged. I’m at the moment exploring how politics impression residents’ psychological well being, particularly within the wake of an election.
The politics of melancholy
Psychologists have lengthy acknowledged melancholy as a frequent response to loss. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross famously named it as one of many 5 levels of grief, together with denial, anger, bargaining and finally, acceptance. Different analysis has since questioned this idea of levels, discovering as an alternative that some individuals expertise only one or two of those feelings.
Whereas students have written about anger and denial in relation to politics, we all know far much less about melancholy. Proof I’ve compiled suggests it’s comparatively frequent.
For instance, a 2004 Pew Analysis Heart survey discovered that 29% of Kerry supporters felt depressed within the wake of George Bush’s reelection and a 2008 Related Press ballot discovered 25% of Republicans have been upset following the election of Barack Obama. Polling knowledge from 2010, 2012 and 2016 reveal comparable outcomes.
This knowledge captures the depth of feelings we really feel from electoral loss. The web site PsychCentral famous that site visitors to their “5 Phases of Grief & Loss” web page was up by 210% the day after Hillary Clinton misplaced the election in 2016 – and their hottest article was “Therapeutic after the Election.” Equally, Google Tendencies knowledge on grief-related searches spiked following the 2008 and 2016 elections.
Grief-related searches on Google spiked after the 2008 and 2016 U.S. presidential elections. Google Tendencies, Creator offered
The proof is evident: Many People really feel depressed after elections.
Dealing with post-election blues
There is no such thing as a straightforward strategy to make melancholy disappear, however there are actions we will take to manage.
Specializing in wholesome dwelling will assist restore your power. Give your self breaks from the information – and politics. Get sufficient sleep, eat nicely and get some train.
Restrict time on social media, or higher but, log out altogether for a number of days. Whereas it’s a strategy to join with different individuals and share info, it’s additionally a key supply of political misinformation, echo chamber conversations and polarized pondering. Total, an excessive amount of time on Fb or Twitter can intensify anxiousness and melancholy.
Search out social help. Speak to a trusted member of the family, buddy, neighborhood chief – or discover a social help group in your space. Whereas which may be a bit tougher in a pandemic, with the necessity for social distancing, it’s nonetheless potential to select up the cellphone, get on a FaceTime name or arrange a digital appointment with a psychological well being skilled. But in addition bear in mind Goldilocks’ rule: Social isolation intensifies adverse emotions, however so does spending an excessive amount of time speaking about issues.
Affirm the worth of democracy. Electoral loss is horrifying as a result of it means having to take care of undesirable or disliked insurance policies – and might create excessive polarization. However accepting loss is a component and parcel of democracy. One strategy to bridge political variations is to affix a bunch, comparable to Constructing Bridgers, which brings collectively residents with numerous political opinions to interact in structured conversations.
When you’ve accepted the end result, become involved with politics. Elections are simply the beginning of what’s a posh policymaking course of. Collaborating is empowering and will help alleviate psychological misery. There are a lot of methods to contribute, from contacting elected officers, protesting, working for native workplace or donating cash to becoming a member of advocacy organizations or beginning a political dialogue group.
In the end, democratic societies choose leaders by voting, however one unsavory a part of the method is that many voters don’t get their most well-liked selection.
Being on the shedding aspect of an election might create mistrust within the system and dissatisfaction with democracy. My analysis exhibits that it hits us emotionally, too. However as an alternative of letting harm sideline you from politics, use it to gasoline the eagerness you felt earlier than the election.

Remus Lupin and the Prisoner of Azkaban--- Chapter 7: Promises

Remus’ heart seemed to simultaneously squeeze and flip-flop painfully as he stood frozen. Just watching. He couldn’t help it. He knew it wasn’t James the moment the stunned thought had shot across his mind. James was dead. Remus and his heart knew this; Remus and his heart had seen his body and Lily’s as they were extracted from the wreckage of their home that Halloween, after Harry had been already taken away. His heart still felt the sinking hurt at the realization of the misidentification, but that was soon overwhelmed with a different ache. My god, it was Harry. Little, cheerful, chubby legged, chatty, giggly Harry.
There had been a picture of Harry in the Prophet the previous year, sort of. It  had included Gilderoy Lockhart, the photographic image of which kept stepping into center frame and flourishing with a dashing grin, while Harry’s mini doppleganger kept furtively trying to duck out all together. But this was different. The living, moving memory of Harry had always been of a little toddler, bowlegged and pudgy with ever reaching hands and an infectious laugh. He loved to be held upside down. He called carrots ‘kets’. He demanded to be tickled upon the entry of a new adult into his house. Remus’ breath caught in his chest as this new image tried to reconcile itself with the baby he knew.
The boy was short and far too thin, but the wild flare of his hair and point to his nose was unmistakable as James. James’ father was obvious in the tilt of his eyebrows when he concentrated, as he was now, over some parchment on the table beside the sundae in front of him and he saw Lily’s sharpness in his gaze. Something in him needed, fiercely, savagely, and newly, to protect him, swelling within his chest with an insistent purpose he didn’t know the source of. He wanted desperately to demand to know how he was being treated, how much he was being fed, if he had any questions, if he needed someone to tell him he was loved and valued and everything that any of them had ever wanted. To tell him that he was so sorry, that it was supposed to be different, that he had wanted so desperately to be there for him, with him. He felt the yawn of all that time behind them both, a sort of synchrony building between each year until it was almost a heartbeat as he counted them out; alone, alone alone, alone…. It should not have been this way for him. Sirius, how COULD you.
Harry chewed on his lip, shoved his glasses farther up his nose and scratched something out with his quill. A painful pride bloomed like some kind of too-hot flower somewhere beneath his ribs. Proud of him for just existing, just trying, so young. Remus had the suspicion that Harry could have just sat there and picked his nose and he would have felt as if he was about to be reduced to tears by the fact that he was here, being, living.
The door behind him chimed, startling him out of his daze and he moved aside for the mother of the young toddlers. They all looked satisfied, but the little girl shot him a suspicious stare as her mother carried her past that stuck a lump in his throat. All he could see now was Lily and Harry. With one last glance at the boy, who was chewing absently on the end of his quill and stirring his ice cream, he left. Harry did not know him. Chocolate in his pocket and a sudden loss of his urge to wander, he returned to his room in the Leaky Cauldron to spend the evening alone.
The morning of the train ride dawned altogether too soon after he’d gone to sleep, in his opinion, morning birds punctuating the excited hubbub inside and outside the pub. Despite his excitement, his dreams had been plagued by visions of baby Harry and grown Harry together, weeping in the wreckage of Hogwarts before both turning to him with Sirius’ scalding, monstrous eyes. He very consciously and adamantly refused to take that as any sort of omen. Stomach refusing even the suggestion of breakfast, he made his bed, swept up his room, and packed up his meager belongings before levitating the suitcase downstairs. He had donated his kettle to a local charity before he had left for London and could fit all the robes he owned into the case, but his joints and ligaments saw fit to remind him that the Change was merely days away and he had done an exceptional amount of walking and standing the past few days and he ached. Still, he thanked Tom and the cleaning witch warmly before he left for King’s Cross, where he, unfortunately, could not levitate his things any longer.
In his heart of hearts, he was bouncing just the same as he had been, all those years ago, when he had learned he would be able to attend the school that his father had always talked about with such fondness. The fear had set in later, when he had seen the doubt on his mother’s face, the worry that he would be discovered, that he would be forced out by his peers and their parents if it ever came to light what he was. In the meeting that Dumbledore had visited their private little cottage for, the Headmaster, smiling over his half moon glasses, had asked her to trust him. That same quiet terror percolated quietly now in the back of his head, in the pit of his stomach; that no matter what he did or how hard he tried, the moment his secret got out it wouldn’t matter. They would hate him. Fear him.  But Dumbledore had kept his word and Remus had never been exposed while at Hogwarts. And so Remus was going to continue what he had started all those years ago; he would keep trusting Dumbledore.
His joy was still there. The joy and expectations and excitement and nerves and enchantment were all simmering in the pit of his stomach in a welcome change of sensation from the usual emotions he had grown accustomed to. But the growing full moon symptoms and nightmare hounded night had left him so damn tired that all he wanted to do was find somewhere away from the huge, echoing train station and sleep. Still, he smiled as he passed through the barrier between platforms and the great scarlet steam engine loomed before him. For a moment– just a moment– he was a teenager again, mother and father following behind him, James and Sirius lurking somewhere nearby to pull the first prank of the year, possibly on him, and Peter just out of sight, valiantly trying to be too cool for his mother’s slightly overbearing affections. The year was sprawled out before all of them, sweet and full of countless choices, all of them fun.
The warmth and light of those memories left him colder with their recession and he rubbed his arms briskly, as if that were the problem. As if it were something he could fix. A seat. Just get a seat. One thing at a time.
The smell of the train, of the grease and wood paneling and pristine carpet and fresh laundry smell of the seats uncranked a knot of tension in his gut he hadn’t even known he had. Oh, how he missed this. He had always loved this part. Though he knew it was autumn, his heart felt like spring because beginnings happened in this place. New years, friends, stories, lives. Sometimes, entirely different people left this train than the ones who had entered it.
It was nearly empty for now, for he had arrived early enough to beat the crowds, but the trolley witch trundled down the corridor, sweets on hand already. “Anything from the trolley, dear?”
He smiled, shook his head mutely. Nothing would come. It was almost too much. She nodded understanding and turned to go, but not before looking over her shoulder and adding, “It’s good to have you back again, my dear.” Chuckling a little at the look on his face, she said, “I remember all my children, boy.” And she was gone.
Eyes misty, quavering smile seemingly locked into place on his lips, he drifted down the train corridor in an overwhelming wave of nostalgia, chose a car at random and collapsed into his seat. He was glad it was still empty. What a terrible first impression as a Professor he would make, weeping.

Another amazing Buddha Bowl
Tumblr media
Build-Your-Own Buddha Bowl
.I’ve seen “Buddha bowls” all over the internet and menus lately, so I set out to make one. What are they, though? How did ambiguous-whole-grain-and-veggie-bowls-with-tasty-sauce all become abbreviated as “Buddha bowls”?
Buddha carried a bowl with him on his journeys and accepted food as donations, which he would eat at the end of the day. Buddha bowls are similar to macrobiotic (macro) bowls with whole grains and steamed or raw veggies.
The base of the meal is brown rice with steamed edamame and vegetables, which all cook together in one pot (this would actually be a super easy meal in itself). For the vegetables, you can choose from snap peas, snow peas or broccoli. If you have another favorite vegetable that steams well, I bet it will work, too.
Then, add some of your favorite chopped raw veggies to the mix (I can vouch for cabbage, romaine, spinach, and kale). Top with a generous drizzle of carrot-ginger dressing.
Tumblr media
You’ll end up with extra for future salads, and you can make it in advance if you’d like.
The Buddha bowl isn’t quite complete without ripe avocado, which I dressed up with toasted sesame oil, sesame seeds and flaky sea salt.  It’s a great snack on its own, and I’m sure you’ll see that component again soon.
Tumblr media
This bowl isn’t the quickest option around, but it’s brimming with nutrients and fiber, and it makes for great leftovers. Feel free to play around with the vegetables and mix-and-match the various components.

Thinly sliced green onion (about ½ small bunch)
Lime wedges
Toasted sesame oil, for drizzling
Sesame seeds
Flaky sea salt
INSTRUCTIONS
Bring a large pot of water to boil (ideally about 4 quarts water). Once the water is boiling, add the rice and continue boiling for 25 minutes. Add the edamame and cook for 3 more minutes (it’s ok if the water doesn’t reach a rapid boil again). Then add the snap peas and cook for 2 more minutes.
Drain well, and return the rice and veggies to the pot. Season to taste with 1 to 2 tablespoons of tamari or soy sauce, and stir to combine.
Divide the rice/veggie mixture and raw veggies into 4 bowls. Arrange cucumber slices along the edge of the bowl (see photos). Drizzle lightly with carrot ginger dressing and top with sliced green onion. Place a lime wedge or 2 in each bowl.
When you’re ready to serve, divide the avocado into the bowls. Lightly drizzle sesame oil over the avocado, followed by a generous sprinkle of sesame seeds and flaky sea salt. Serve promptly.
If you intend to have leftovers, wait to complete step 4 just before serving (otherwise the avocado will brown too soon). Leftover bowls keep well (avocado excluded) for 4 to 5 days in the refrigerator.
NOTES
*CARROT GINGER DRESSING NOTE: You’re probably only going to need ½ batch of the dressing for 4 bowls. I recommend making the full batch since blenders require a decent volume of liquid to blend. Just use the leftover dressing on salads within 1 to 2 weeks of making.
*MAKE IT QUICK: If you’re in a hurry, you can skip the dressing and drizzle tamari and toasted sesame oil lightly over the bowls instead.
MAKE IT VEGAN: Be sure to follow the vegan option while making the carrot-ginger dressing.
MAKE IT GLUTEN FREE: Be sure to use certified gluten-free tamari, instead of soy sauce. Or, omit the soy sauce altogether and season the rice with salt, to taste.
MAKE IT SOY FREE: Omit the tamari/soy sauce and season the rice with salt, to taste.
RECOMMENDED EQUIPMENT:  blender for making the dressing and this colander for draining the rice and veggies (those are affiliate links).

First Mission Accomplished
From an 11km race last Sunday to 100km this Sunday; it’s safe to say that my distance has increased quite considerably over the past week! Yesterday I ran my first ultra of the year (my second ultra ever) which contributed to me reaching my first 1000km this year. This also means that I have now completed the Kidney Cancer UK 1000km challenge; a virtual run, swim and / or cycle, which is live between 1st January to 31st December 2019. I signed up to do this after my friends told me they were doing the same, and it seemed like a good idea to be able to raise money for two charities, as opposed to just one. The donations I am taking through Just Giving are all going to Action Aid, but the money I paid to sign up to the 1000km challenge will go directly to Kidney Cancer UK.
I started the week well with two 21km runs on Tuesday and Wednesday, but I was a little worried when I started to feel a familiar pain in my mouth, resulting from the appearance of one of my wisdom teeth. I have wisdom teeth which pop up every now and then, causing me a little bit of temporary discomfort, but they soon pop back down again and I think nothing of it. However, this one popped up and stayed there and I knew I had to make a trip to the dentist pretty sharpish, if I wanted to recover in time for the ultra. So on Wednesday, straight from my run, I made an appointment and got it removed, which was extremely painful given the fact that my mouth was very infected and they had to inject through the infection around 5 times. Ouch. But at least this meant that things would get better, so I carried on with my normal routine; pilates that evening followed by a run and HIIT class the following morning.
I also had a pain in my leg to contend with; around two weeks ago when I was doing a HIIT class I started to feel shooting pains up my left thigh which I ignored, because unfortunately that’s what I do. The pain continued and during a class on Thursday I decided to hold back from doing all of the leg exercises and asked my coaches for alternatives as I didn’t want to make it worse. A normal person would have probably stopped going to classes altogether but I know my body and its limits, so I worked around the pain and didn’t push it too much.
Friday I took it very easy; I will never stop exercising completely before a race but I will tone it down a little. So in the morning I just did one run (instead of two) and one HIIT class, and in the evening instead of going back to the gym, I went for a couple of beers instead. I’d just had some really good news and felt that a celebratory beer was in order; it was very difficult to not get carried away but I knew I would regret it if I did. Saturday was a very easy gym session with a 5km treadmill run (boringggg) and some core and upper body exercises. Followed by carb loading with Ajay and Donna who were also running the following day; Donna was doing 25km in the morning and Ajay was joining the 12.5km towards the end of the day at 5pm.
I woke up on Sunday at 2.30am feeling fresh and had granola, banana and soy milk for breakfast. I don’t usually indulge in breakfast; I don’t like eating in a morning and I usually have my first meal of the day around 1.30pm. So it was a bit of a struggle to force food down so early, but I knew I had to have some fuel in my body before the run. I’m really pleased that I did as there wasn’t any food available before the race, which is very unusual, and the food provided throughout wasn’t very exciting (watermelon, bananas and bananas with sticky rice). The first banana with sticky rice I had tasted like the most delicious thing ever. But this quickly got very boring and I never want to eat another banana ever again; I almost threw up when I got home and saw a left over banana from that morning’s breakfast.
Just like the food, the run itself was pretty boring, but I didn’t expect anything else. The ultra took place in Vachirabenjatas Park (also known as Rot Fai Park) in Bangkok, close to Chatuchak Market; a popular weekend shopping spot for tourists. The park is lovely, or at least I thought it was until I had to run around it 25 times. At just 4km per loop, this became very repetitive, very quickly, making the run just as much a mental challenge, as well as a physical one. I started off strong, running the laps at a good pace, but taking care not to get too carried away by going too quickly. I'm not normally a particularly strategic runner, but I knew I had to approach this one with some type of plan if I was to get through it. So I decided to take it in stages of 5 laps (20km) as I know I can do that distance comfortably. After every 20km I would treat myself to an energy gel, some food, and perhaps a bathroom break if I was lucky, for a temporary sit down. However, as with all good plans I soon had to fall back on a contingency. At around 30km the pain in my leg I had been struggling with decided to make an appearance, leaving me with 70km to run with an injury. So I chose three stations around the 4km lap and made it my aim to run to those, take some food or water, and walk with it until I had finished, then run to the next station. This worked for some time as it gave me a break to get my leg back in working order.
This plan lasted until around 60/70km, but then the pain in my leg intensified even more, to the point where walking was a struggle. So I spent much more time walking (and hobbling), and stopped off regularly to stretch. I found that one particular stretch (the pigeon) eased the pain and allowed me to do at least 2km quite comfortably, so I was stopping to stretch every 2km, which obviously slowed me down quite a bit. I’d been holding a position of 4th in the female category until this point but soon dropped down to 6th, although by this point I didn’t really care as I was more concerned about getting through the pain and being able to finish the race, rather than my actual finishing position. Somewhere around lap 17, or 18, or 19 (I have no idea as they all merged in to one) I broke in to a rendition of Build Me Up Buttercup (it was the only song I could think of) and that kept me going, despite the concerned looks I was getting from passersby and fellow runners. At one point I caught up with the leader and her brother (who was pacing her) excitedly told me that I was in second place, as she was in front. I had to tell him that he was wrong, she had actually lapped me a couple of times and was way ahead. She was an absolute superstar (as was everyone in the race), but it always amazes me how quickly some of these runners finish; especially the girls. I was pushing myself to my absolute limits yet she still finished quite a way in front of me. Absolutely incredible.
Speaking of other runners, it always amazes me how an individual sport like running can create such a community. Some runners had come as part of a group and their friends and family had set up camp in the park for the day, handing out supplies each time they completed a lap. The supplies were shared amongst other runners too, as well the cheers and shouts of encouragement, which is always appreciated, especially towards the end such a big race. The organisers were incredible; everyone who was sat at a checkpoint was extremely positive and motivating, and each time we crossed the checkpoint at the start line where all the vendors were located, we got a shout out and some encouragement from those who were checking the results. What is even more incredible is the runners themselves; yesterday there were a variety of different races taking place, including the 12.5km, 25km, various different relays and the 100km. Each time I passed a runner with a 100km bib, we gave each other a thumbs up and and words of ‘su su’ were exchanged (literally translating to ‘fighting fighting’ e.g. keep fighting, don’t give up!). Towards the end of the day when the 12.5km racers joined us full of fresh legs and energy, they were quick to cheer us on which gave a real boost, especially when most of us were in excruciating pain. I am extremely thankful for two ladies who, during my last lap when my leg pain was absolutely unbearable, came to my rescue with gels. I thanked them for their offer, but I already had so much heat gel on my leg that I couldn’t actually feel it. Instead of leaving me to it, they dropped back to walk with me and, when they found out it was my last lap, they encouraged me to run ‘just a little’, which I did, and I managed to run right through until the end. Even the 100km runners were still keeping up the high spirits; one lady saw I was struggling and, even though she still had a couple of laps to go, she caught up to me to hand me a sweet and some smelling salts to give me some energy. Runners really do have the kindest hearts and despite questioning my sanity on more than one occasion yesterday, it reminded me exactly why I put myself through this sort of thing.
I crossed the finish line in just under 15 hours, coming in 8th in my gender category and 86th overall. I was pleased to see two smiling faces; Ajay and Steve had both waited for me after completing their races, and it was very much appreciated especially as I was in so much pain that I couldn’t even get up to go and collect my bag. They brought me drinks, helped me to a taxi and kept my mind off the shooting pains in my thigh which were making it extremely difficult to walk. On the way home I ordered vegan pizza AND chips which I think is very restrained considering I wanted to order the entire menu twice over. I didn’t get my cider because I was in too much pain to get to a shop and I didn’t get my smoothie because the delivery place had closed. I dropped some of the pizza on the floor which was probably the most painful experience of the whole day because bending down to wipe the sauce stains up was almost impossible. It took me ages to get to sleep last night because my thigh was in so much pain and I really started to worry that I’d done some serious damage. I woke this morning, still in pain, and sent a message to my colleagues telling them that I would work from home today. Five minutes later I changed my mind, deleted the message, got myself in to the shower and cycled to the MRT to take the train to work. I hobbled around the office all day looking more pregnant than my pregnant colleague. I even found the energy to do a short 6km run this evening and I saw a lady in a 50km running around the park too, so it’s not just me who doesn’t understand the concept of rest. It’s been a struggle, but would I do it again? Of course!

Thursday 24th March 1825
7 40/60
2 3/4
A long grubbling last night and the kiss she said that for the first time she had had her strongest before I had mine, mine was quite at the last –
Breakfast at 9 – Mrs B- [Barlow] and I off at 10 3/4 to Miss Gauntlet (chez Madame Frederic, rue Saint Honoré) – we all went to the Elysée Bourbon – surprised to find our billet of no use – we could not see the palace for all the furniture was packed up to go to Rheims for the coronation – on our return saw l’eglise de la madeleine – Had it been allowed to remain as a temple de gloire, and had the original plan of the interior been allowed to remain unaltered, it would have been one of the finest buildings in Europe, but the alterations made to adapt it for a roman catholic church, have utterly spoilt it; and I told the woman who shewed us round, that, were I the architect, I should die of chagrin to see my work so ruined – the 2 colossal Corinthian columns from the bottom to the top of the building, intended I suppose to form the separation between the nave and chancel – and the apsis or [rotende] for the grand altar, to say nothing of the style of ornament chosen for the cornices – are totally incongruous with the magnificent but plain and severe architecture of the temple – the king and duchess of Berri have just been there and had decided on the cornice ornaments which traced in fresco to shew the effect – the church is to be finished as soon as possible for the church of the Assomption is too small – from my manner of regret, the woman thought I should like to see the architect M. [Viguen], rue Melée, no. 40 – Madame Galvani tells me they have worked at this building already 30 years – the fine exterior columns tout antou were in the original plan, much wider apart and much larger and of finer proportions, but the then government had them done as at present to correspond better with the peristyle of the chambre des deputés, whose columns are much too close, and whose faulty architecture is most conspicuous –
At the stand in there rue de Luxembourg, took a fiacre, drove (along the boulevards) to rue Mont Parnasse, no. 3, and took up Jane – there to the Institute royal des Sourds-muets, and got there at 1 1/4, 1/4 hour after the séance had begun – the room was quite full – but a gentleman of the Institution very civilly shewed us across the tribune whence M.L abbé serrier was speaking and we were placed close to it – I had in fact a very good seat brought from which I could see and hear everything – the answers given in writing by 3 of the grown up pupils (quite young though) to the miscellaneous questions asked them were wonderful, [imaginative] as they bespoke the writers as well informed as quick and [lauding] ideas on the subjects as just and clean as any of our senior wranglers at Oxford the questions asked were numerous – moral, metaphysical, historical – [what is] eternity? this question M. Serrier said hed been asked 20 times and the answer given had been always nearly the same – the definition was altogether precise, ending with ‘c’est l’age de Dien’ – Ditto might be said of the definition of reconnaissance, which ended with ‘c’est la memoire du coeur – the question [Re boudeir] est il absolu ou rélatif? was very well answered, as also ‘what is the difference between the characters of Nero and Trajan – the séance which began at 1 was over at 3 – the room small too [slow] and unworthy of its purpose – En sortant – found 2 or 3 stalls arranged along the pass near the outer door, containing several little pretty things turned in wood by the poor boys – very well done – did not buy anything but a small book giving 2 answers given by a sourdenuet and giving also an explanation of the ‘Ecriture manuelle’, or the [manners] of conversing with the deaf and dumb of all [counts] by means of the fingers –
We all 4 walked leisurely home (Mrs B- [Barlow] sent back Jane afterwards) – called at the shop where I bought my Pliny’s natural history – the man asked 14 francs for a delphin edition of martel with Smidt’s notes, and 9 francs instead of 8 as before, for a variorum edition – I offered 12 francs for the former – he said he would take 13 – perhaps I may go again about it – got home at 4 – Miss Gauntlet left us at the foot of the stairs – she said lady Charlotte Beauchere, (1 of the daughters of the duke of saint Albans) was going to Madame de Rosny for a year – Madame de R- [Rosny] had asked 400 francs a month for lady C- [Charlotte] and her dame de compagnie, but the French lady who made the agreement for her ladyship, and who had been in England, said this was not enough and that lady C- [Charlotte] would pay 500 a month for herself and 250 for her dame de compagnie making nearly double what was asked !!!
Miss G paid two hundred a month Madame de Rosny made a pretty little income by her own industry a great deal of contraband going on in Paris ladies of rank carry it on Mrs de Rosny sent the thing by means of the Austrian thro the English ambassador to London Miss G would not recommend any single lady there nor would she on this account have staid herself because tho she does not all believe it yet Madame de R is so generally esteemed the mistress of the Austrian ambassador it would not do –
Went to look at the affiches at the corner of the rue de Beaune, finding Talma not to play tonight but tomorrow came home to find Madame Galvani here – sat with her tête à tête in dining room an hour –
It is Mr de Mortigny who goes every Sunday who was her amant she and her husband were the making of him she loved him seven years but he then deceived her in something ill avait dementi she said she would see him no more and immediately left Paris and went to her fathers at Rome where she had so violent an illness. Her husband asked if he should send for Mr de Mortigny she said no and thinking never to recover. Made an absolute donation of all her property to her husband but for this she could not have been as she is now did she love Mr de Mortigny now she would never admit him but she does not yet his wife has a horror of her thinks her the most dangerous of women and that she is the only one who troubles Mr de Mortignys rest but Madame G has told him she never wishes to see him if it annoys his wife he might get her some place but tho he makes great professions about it he does nothing I said id not like him at all he was poltron which she seems to think true saying he is like all french men –
Madame G- [Galvani] asked what she should leave me if she died – said I, the picture of yours, you shewed me – she promised to do so –promised to see her tomorrow if I went on Saturday – if not to see her on Sunday – she will be 46 tomorrow – tis her birthday –
On going in to Mrs B [Barlow] found her quite grave saw some thing was not right guessed she had not liked my being so long [tete-tete] with Madame G [Galvani] could make nothing of her went out thinking fits like these will never suit me. On returning I myself was very grave by after dinner she had come round she had fancied Madame G [Galvani] and I had ceased talking when she entered once I knew nothing about it joked her said she was fanciful she owned it and said she had thought if she was mine she might be very miserable I was so much admired and liked by the ladies in yorkshire and they had such opportunities of besetting me all this was because she loved me so much I laughed and we got quite right she lay down while I wrote all this page of today –
From 5 to 5 40/60 sauntered through the gardened to rue de Rivoli no. 36, and bought a large plum cake for Madame G- [Galvani] to be sent tomorrow on her birthday – the man asked 24 francs but when I said it was a commission I could only give 20 francs and ordered one to be made at this price he said he would rather sell me for this price that at 24, and so let me have it –
From 5 3/4 till it was too dark to see by day light wrote the first 29 lines of today – the servants being out made us not have dinner till 6 3/4 – at 9 25/60 had just finished writing the last page of today – very fine day – sunny – Fahrenheit 43˚ at 10 3/4 a.m. and 39˚ at 10 3/4 p.m. – tea at 9 3/4 – settling my accounts which took me perhaps 1/4 hour – sat talking –
At about eleven and three quarters took her on my knee and began grubbling she having no support for her back lay her on the bed knelt down by her grubbled well and had the kiss. We both groaned over she declaring towards the last that the pleasure became pain I said she had never given me so good an one. We both got in to bed to have a little nap took about an hours doze then absolutely grubbled again and had another very good kiss the kiss tho not quite so good as the one before then another hours nap and got up about two [foundress] and go regularly to bed – each took a glass of hot weak brandy and water and after my doubting a moment whether to have still another kiss we both fell asleep about three –

Germany has slashed its tax on tampons. Many other countries still tax them as ‘luxury’ items.
The German parliament is still discussing the exact details of the reduction, which will then be introduced as part of the 2020 tax amendments, according to the German news agency DW.
The Reichstag had previously maintained that the tax did not discriminate against women. Rather, lawmakers argued, tampons were just one of a number of items the state needed to tax for revenue. In response, campaigners became increasingly creative, publishing a Tampon Book filled with 15 tampons. Why? Books — considered an essential item in Germany — are only taxed at 7 percent.
A rallying point for women around the world
The basic debate is over how much tax should be levied on menstrual products. Many tax codes distinguish between luxury or nonessential items, which are taxed more and serve as a revenue source for the government, and essential consumer goods, which the state taxes at a lower rate to ensure affordability.
But it’s also about something bigger: Taking on the “tampon tax” has become a major issue worldwide in recent years as women’s activists have collectively begun in on different countries to challenge the practice.
Perhaps less visibly, this issue has also become a field for debate over the role of the government — or, in the case of Europe, the European Union — in shaping taxation and states’ rights.
Campaigners say women have no choice whether to get their period or not and therefore shouldn’t have to pay a high tax on menstrual items. Activists say this particularly burdens poor women, creating a phenomenon known as “period poverty,” in which women can’t afford sanitary items. Studies have also shown that around the world, the United States included, lack of access to menstrual pads or tampons is one reason girls miss out on school.
“The fathers of the tampon tax never had a period,” German journalist Jule Schulte, who started the successful petition, told DW when asked why she thought it took so long to change.
Other countries have already scrapped their ‘tampon taxes’
Kenya led the way in 2004 when it abolished its VAT on menstrual pads and tampons, though many other barriers to accessing sanitary items there remain, such as access to clean sanitation in impoverished areas.
Canada was also relatively ahead of the curve when it repealed its 5 percent tax in 2015. The previous year, the government had made around $36 million from the tax on feminine hygiene products, according to Statistics Canada.
In 2018, India repealed its 12 percent tax on “nonessential” menstrual items, such as tampons and sanitary pads, which had only been introduced into the tax code the year before. Women’s activists there were particularly enraged when the tax was first announced, as around four out of five women already lacked access to sanitary pads, according to the BBC.
Australia followed suit in 2018, scrapping its 10 percent tax.
In the E.U., tampon taxes have created a clash over states’ rights
Taxes on menstrual items in the 28 E.U.-member states range from as little as zero in Ireland to as high as 27 percent in Hungary. Denmark, Croatia and Sweden are also high taxers, each with a 25 percent VAT.
Since 1992, E.U. member states have had to apply a minimum 15 percent VAT on consumer goods and services, with the option to apply a reduced rate of as low as 5 percent on certain “essential” items. (This was to ensure a steady rate of tax flows within E.U. countries.)
Consequently, some countries such as the United Kingdom, Lithuania and Czech Republic only have a 5 percent VAT as they’ve requested and received an E.U. reduction on sanitary items by labeling them as essential items. In contrast, indebted Greece raised its tax on tampons from 13 percent to 23 percent in 2015 as part of austerity measures imposed by its European creditors. As Ireland didn’t have a consumer goods tax on menstrual items before 1991, it was grandfathered in and allowed to keep the items tax free. In 2015, France reduced its tax from 20 to 5.5 percent. That same year the British government announced it would donate proceeds from the tax to women’s charities in response to pressure to scrap the country’s 5 percent tax altogether.
The E.U.’s control over tax codes was one issue spurring supporters of the 2016 “Leave” campaign and the U.K.’s ultimate vote in favor of Brexit.
As Quartz reported, “The tampon tax has generated heated debate in the UK among supporters both for and against the proposed exit of Britain from the EU.”
Amid the Brexit campaigning, in March 2016 the E.U. unanimously agreed to allow members states to remove all sales taxes on female hygiene products starting in 2022. The move followed years of protests and petitions in the U.K., as well as France.
“While the euroskeptics describe it as a perfect example of the relatively small decisions the UK government is forced to negotiate with the EU, those in favor of remaining in the EU highlighted the approved resolution as promising for future negotiations,” Quartz’s report from the time continued.
It remains to be seen which will happen first: The E.U.’s 2022 proposed VAT change, or the U.K.’s Brexit from the union. In the meantime, women’s rights activists are eyeing which country will remove its tax next.

Was Obama's health care/college system comparison valid?
Tonight President Obama compared the public health care option to the public system of Universities and colleges. He said the public option will work the same way public colleges and Universities without inhibiting a vibrant system of private colleges and Universities. This is a fool's argument and a total apples to oranges comparison. Let me explain, first almost all private universities receive funding from the federal government. The federal government is not going to provide funding for private insurance. The second reason is it's common knowledge that the best Universities in the U.S. are private schools such as Duke, Stanford, and the Ivy League. These universities fill most of the highest paying jobs in the country. Some jobs even go as far as to require a degree from one of these schools (Stock Brokers on NYC Stock Exchange.) These highly paid graduates can donate larger amounts of money back to their respective colleges than the average Joe who graduated from a generic state funded university. No one is going to donate money to the private insurance companies. We can't even get all the people who qualify for insurance to sign up and that's the problem! Look, I have no way of knowing whether the public option will work or won't but when faulty logic is used to support it I become concerned. When most of the people supporting the public option are from California (a state where the middle class is few and far between) I become more concerned. When most of the Senators and Representatives who support the public option say they would prefer the U.S. had a single payer system (that's total government control of health care if you didn't know) I become very concerned. The reality is no one knows what the effects of public option will be. Also, the success of FedEx is not any proof that public option won't hurt private companies because an independent council regulates the mail industry. No independent council is mentioned in any of the plans in the House or Senate. yes or no""

Why did the Affordable Care Act make my insurance unaffordable?
I have a private health plan and a preexisting condition that requires taking daily medication, an annual checkup, and a test every 5 years. Other than that I'm young and in great health. My understanding of the law was that it would increase premiums on people without conditions to pay for people like me that have a preexisting condition. So why did the insurance company send me something saying if I keep my current plan I'll pay 25% more and that the 2 alternatives are more expensive with lower benefits, plus it said I could lose all kinds of other benefits. I'm going to call the insurance company tomorrow, but before I can call can someone explain the basics so I know something before the call?""

How Much Will My Insurance Go Up At 10km/h Over The Speed Limit?
I got a speeding ticket for going 60km/h in a 50km/h zone while trying to pass someone (which says in the driving handbook that it's legal as long as it's under 20km). I took it to the court and I was found guilty, I've never had any tickets in the whole 5 years I've been driving and no accidents at all. My insurance is already through the roof because I have a newer car and I'm only 23 and they said my premium won't have a big drop until I'm 25 anyway. I didn't lose any demerit points at all on my license and up until now I have had an absolutely clean driving record. If my insurance finds out, is there any idea how much my premium could possibly go up?""

Insurance deductibles -- when to pay? (and other insurance questions)?
So I am no long part of an california HMO plan, so now I have to get insurance on my own. Problem is that I am making about $800 / month (part time work) while going to school full time. Both my parents are on government low-income plans, so I cant put them as primary policy holders while I get student rates. One question I have about deductibles is when to pay it? For example, a plan that has $1,500 deductible / $0 doctor visits, do I have to pay the full value of that office visit to the doctor? Or will I have to pay $1,500 straight out to the insurance company and then funds will be used accordingly? What about $1500 deductible / $30 co-pay doctor visits? If I pay $30 to the doctor, will this credit towards the deductible? Or will this plan only hit me with the deductible for $1500 when I go to the hospital? Or will the insurance company want it upfront? Final question is: for a 21 year old student that is about 5'7, 230 lbs, non smoker, rarely drinks, what do you think would be the correct rate? So far I am getting estimates of $60-300, depending how big of a deductible I want to put down. Actually, one quick question: opinions on Kaiser Permanente anyone? I know most people i've talked to complained about slow waits and etc, but i'm leaning towards it because of good coverage for the cost -- but is it really worth it? I know this is quite a lot to ask, so if you don't feel like answering, at least point me to an informative web site?""

Michigan Auto Insurance Premium almost twice as much as quote!?
I'll do my best to summarize my situation, and am using estimates for days and amounts... I received a quote for auto insurance for $590 for a 6 month period from an independent auto agent. When I received my insurance policy and premium price it way nearly double (over $1,100). I cancelled the policy within a week after receiving the huge increase in premiums. Because of the time it took for me to receive my new premium and the 5-7 days for me to cancel, I received a bill for an amount due of roughly $40.00. I previously had auto insurance through the company/agent but it was for a different vehicle and paid a month in advance. My question is, why am I responsible, and how am I responsible for the premium that is so much higher than what I was quoted? I didn't sign any paperwork, I called over the phone and had the agent switch the policy based on the new quote. Auto insurance played a huge factor in budgeting for the vehicle and I feel that I was ripped off. I should be getting a credit for the 10 days that I did not use, not having to pay more for the days I did use. Thanks for any advice you're able to provide!""

A few questions about SR-22 Insurance?
Alright, so I'm getting slightly annoyed of the DMV as I've visited them three times already an had literally no progress made in all those lame visits... Anyways, I only got insurance so I can drive, but my car has failed smog three times now so that wont be happening and I'm now paying non-owner SR-22 insurance. Here are a few questions I have about the SR-22 and any input would be much appreciated. 1) What are the exact consequences if I choose to cancell my non-owner SR-22 insurance? I acknowledge that I will have to restart the process all over again when I want to reactivate it, but will the price be raised even more and the time frame? 2) Who do I call to find out how long I have to have SR-22 insurance; DMV or Local Court? 3) When does the SR-22 officially get activated, when the judge orders it or when I first started paying for the insurance? (I'm asking this because the insurance company I'm with is saying I shouldn't cancel because it will restart; I got the DUI 2 years ago and acitvated the insurance about 2 mounts ago.) I'm planning on going to a 4 year college so I don't want to be paying not to drive...! *I live in California if that helps you answer the question.""

When I called for a quote though, through a different car insurance company, they told me it would be $230 a month. Why is it so high? Is it because I stopped paying for my State Farm Insurance?""

How does health insurance work in prison/jail, is there such thing as health insurance for inmates?""
Did you see the left/right coalition letter against the health insurance mandate?
March 19, 2010 Dear Member of Congress: On behalf of our organizations and the millions of people we represent, we strongly encourage you to oppose the individual mandate in the Patient Protection and Affordable Health Care Act of 2009. Our groups and members may disagree on what are the best solutions to our health care problems, but this unprecedented coalition of organizations from across the political spectrum agrees that forcing individuals to buy insurance from private companies under the threat of fines or jail is not the reform we need. The individual mandate is a section of the bill that requires every single American to buy health insurance-whether or not they want it or feel they can afford it-or break the law and face penalties and fines. Consequently, the bill does not actually cover 30 million more Americans-instead it makes them criminals if they do not buy insurance from private companies. We hope you agree that it is unconscionable to force people to buy a product from a private insurer. This would effectively be a tax-and a huge one-paid directly to a private industry. Enacting this mandate would be a major victory for the insurance companies at the expense of the American people. It should be no surprise they support the government forcing everyone to buy their product. Imagine how the hamburger industry would respond if the government forced everyone to have hamburgers for lunch or pay fines? According to the President's Council of Economic Advisers, the average annual premium for single coverage is $4,321. If the 46 million uninsured are forced to purchase private health insurance at that price, then the insurance industry stands to bring in up to $200 billion in new insurance premiums per year. The Senate bill also includes an estimated $630 billion in corporate welfare for private insurance companies in the form of subsidies over the next 10 years, creating even less incentive than currently exists for private insurance premiums to be lowered. To make matters worse, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services estimates that 19 million Americans would not buy insurance and as a result would be forced to pay $29 billion in taxes/fines. The Joint Committee on Taxation has made it clear that failure to pay these fines could result in jail time. Thirty-six states have passed or are considering measures that would allow their residents to opt out, including Virginia, Utah, Pennsylvania, Florida, Minnesota, Michigan, Georgia and Ohio. Given these fact, it is not surprising that a recent NBC News poll finds 57 percent of Americans do not want the government to create a law that requires everyone to have health insurance coverage and that only 38% of Americans favor the mandate, making it the least popular part of the bill. The American people stand in firm opposition to the individual mandate. We stand with them. We hope you will, too. My vehicle was determined to be a total loss and I have decided to give up my car to the insurance company. They have asked me to send the certificate of title and the DMV form (Vehicle transfer and reassignment form). The odd thing is that the insurance company asked that I do not sign the title document, but asked that I sign the DMV form. Should I sign both documents, or just sign the DMV form (will that be enough to successfully transfer the vehicle?) What will happen if I end up signing the certificate of title, even when the insurance company told me not to??""

Hello, world,
Have you supported our fundraiser yet? You still can donate, here!
We hope you’ve all had a lovely snowy weekend.
On Saturday, the team got together for some team building and co-op building experience.
The card game is called Co-Op the co-op game.
(left to right) Abby, Lori, Christian, Tony, and Jaimie (Lily, photographer) play Co-Op!
It took quite a long time to set up! As you can see, this game is not played on a board, but in fact, the process of figuring out how to play is a cooperative exercise in and of its self.
Here’s how to play (granted I just learned this weekend, so I am no expert). Essentially:
Everyone plays per one day (unless otherwise indicated) and we begin on Monday, and go through the week.
Every day something happens, which is usually a set back/challenge
In order to win, you all must have a high enough vibe level, and we need to make a profit of $10 (note: as a co-op, we begin at a deficit.)
Players do not go in any predetermined order, in fact determining the order is a huge part of the game. Some abilities work well when someone does one thing first. this way, we can make more money and gain vibes
Each player has special abilities (they can play 2 cards, opposed to the regular 1, or they can vibe up more than others)
There are goods that we sell, that mostly always begin at the Warehouse, and we cannot move the goods to the storefront unless we get a special card, or it’s the weekend.
When we do things together we get more benefits.
Lori
Ted
All in all a difficult game to get into, but a rewarding game in the end. We found, each player really plays a very important role in the success of the business. Here’s why:
Teamwork really makes the dream work. Sometimes, only a few of us would take a loss (decreasing in vibes), but, since we all had to have high levels of vibes in order to win (according to the rules of the game) we planned accordingly so that we could take some losses here, but recover them there, and move the group together to win.
No one person can know all the possible moves. Everyone has a hand of 5 cards, with very detailed descriptions written on them, so with 25 cards altogether, we had to rely on each other to bring up important cards when the time came. The strategy requires everyone.
Complexity is easier to handle with reciprocated trust. Some cards were very complex, in fact sometimes I just said, “I trust you”. I had to put aside my understanding of a certain element of the game to keep us moving towards success. I trusted my teammates to make some decisions where I felt I didn’t have the expertise.
High 5s, and singing really ease the tension. The co-op cards included actions like “must be humming” for this card to take effect or “can only get if” all players high 5.
Jaimie has the card!
