Japan is an amazing place to live, full of history, culture, and cuisine. It's so amazing, in fact, that thousands of people who wouldn't otherwise choose a teaching career become English teachers, simply to get a more complete experience of the country.
I was in this camp myself, teaching English for years, even though I was never really a teacher at heart. However, using the methods outlined in this guide, I found a non-teaching job in japan and now earn an income doing something more in line with my strengths: helping people have more fun working in Japan with ALT Insider and helping people get hired at ALT Insider Resume Review.
The following guide is for those of you in the same boat I was: enjoying your English teaching job to a degree, but only doing it as a means to keep living in Japan. If you see teaching as a stepping stone rather than a career, it may be time to start working on a new path.

Glitch: Infinite is happening this weekend! Feinberg, Couriway, Illumina, Zylenox, Fruitberries, and Algorythm will be participating and representing the Minecraft Speedrunning Community!
Glitch: Infinite is an in person marathon charity event brought to you by Glitch, GSA (Global Speedrun Association), and VG BootCamp, and will be a three day event starting on February 18 to February 20. They will be supporting Tackle Kids Cancer with this event to support childhood cancer research!
In this event, there are two main parts: the Smash Brothers Ultimate Matches Brackets (check out the schedule for that part of the event here), and showcases of speedruns of various games, ranging from Minecraft, to Undertale, to Super Mario Odyssey (schedule linked here).
The segment for Minecraft is on Sunday February 20 at 1:55PM EST, and will be the finale for the speedrun part of the event. Illumina, Feinberg, Zylenox, and Couriway will be attempting as many 1.16 RSG completions as they can in their allotted five hour time slot, and will be commentated by 360Chrism, ALTInsider, WarningTrack, and Minecraft Speedrunners Fruitberries (we all know who Fruit is) and Algorythm (for those who don't know, this is the person currently holding the Icarus RSG WR).
The MCSR members will be hanging out around Maryland for the few days prior to the event, so we may also get irl content for the coming days!
Watch the event being streamed at https://www.twitch.tv/speedrun!

It was a year ago this weekend (Memorial Day 2019) that I was interviewed for the Inside Japan Podcast @altinsider . We are relaunching this podcast episode on our YouTube Channel hoping that the new version will be a better listening experience. If you are interested in living and working in Japan, you will want to listen to this episode. This episode discusses the interviewing process on JET, expectations on placement on JET, what the first month on JET will be like, continued service beyond JET with JETAA, challenges on JET (general and specific), developing your “battle cry”, and learning how to add value while on JET, plus much more. This goes without saying that as the title of this podcast episode, “How Breaking your Contract Effects everyone” should be avoided at all costs. Check out new post by James from ALT Insider, about Japanese TV. We swear, it's not all bad.
“It sucks.” When talking to any foreigner in Japan about Japanese TV, you’ll usually hear those two words a lot. And while I’m not here to tell you that Japanese TV is awesome or that filling huge blocks of your time in Japan with daytime dramas is a good thing to do, what I am going to tell you that it’s not as bad as people say. While it may be “cool” to say that Japanese TV is stupid, the…
