It was a year ago this weekend (Memorial Day 2019) that I was interviewed for the Inside Japan Podcast @altinsider . We are relaunching this podcast episode on our YouTube Channel hoping that the new version will be a better listening experience. If you are interested in living and working in Japan, you will want to listen to this episode. This episode discusses the interviewing process on JET, expectations on placement on JET, what the first month on JET will be like, continued service beyond JET with JETAA, challenges on JET (general and specific), developing your “battle cry”, and learning how to add value while on JET, plus much more. This goes without saying that as the title of this podcast episode, “How Breaking your Contract Effects everyone” should be avoided at all costs. Overworked in Japan
For a year a half, I worked 80 hour weeks to start up a school that was not really my school. Sometimes I was led to believe that it was and other times, I was treated like an employee not a partner.
But because I was a foreigner, I was very vulnerable in that situation. I was always a victim to the whim of the investors who would sometimes change the rules if they were by in any way offended by my actions. Yet when I did leave that situation (currently packing now), all hell broke lose. I was accused of being ungrateful for all that they had done for me. I also have to pay 5000 dollars to them as punishment for leaving even if I have already worked past the allotted time on the contract. The Japanese are very good at dealing out passive aggressive punishments.
I left because I was working two jobs to support a school like I was the owner when actually I was not. From my salary, I had to pay for the building, the Japanese teacher’s salary, utilities, and other expenses at the school. But I really had no rights. I sometimes got part of the leftover profit but it wasn’t much and I was making the same amount of money I did when just working one job.
if it was my school and i was not just an employee who was told that i was a partner in order for me to feel okay with paying everything, i wouldn't have a problem working 80 hour weeks.
Yes, I did have a contract but in many cases , laws and contracts do not have weight against the social rules of Japan. Even if the contract is being violated, many workers do not report it here. It is almost like your employer is god and you as the employee dare not speak against them or leave. Not too long ago, a man was killed on the job by his boss who had lost her temper. An ex coworker of mine had worked for six months no pay because his boss told him that he didnt have the money. So yah, you can kinda get a vibe of Japanese companies here.
Being the self-righteous American that I am... The one time I did report it, I got threats and tons of harassment from my ex-bosses. I could only fight them so much until I was about to snap from the craziness. Even with proof of contract violations, I was basically silenced after I went to Hello Work to report the abuse.
Now that I am leaving this second gig and this town, I am in a similar situation yet again. Sigh.... They keep changing their story and I dare not mention to them how my working situation was nothing like was in the contract or they will probably try to make me pay even more money. They also got my new address and the address of my new workplace in case I do not pay them.
Threatening much? And the weird thing is that they act like they own me. I really think that doing business with the Japanese is full of hazards and pitfalls. I would highly discourage anyone from being tied to them in any way when it comes to business. The only way to get away from these people now would be to either leave japan and change my contact information.
I am done with these small businesses in Japan and will now work for a big company with benefits and some semblance of a union. I will warn you again how contracts have little power here. Also, there is a lot of forced overtime with no pay. If you do speak up about it, you risk losing your job and your livelihood. Though Japan has some laws to protect their workers, companies are constantly finding more loopholes to avoid them. In fact, the working situation is getting worse here. Though the Japanese are known as expressionless etc or weird... they are extremely volatile and emotional in business matters (from my experience). They honor unspoken social rules over a flimsy piece of contract.
You have been warned.
