The DC Metro System is functionally one of the best I've ever experienced. But it is also made up of giant slabs of windowless solid concrete in a color I would describe as "piss gray".
For reference, this comedy sketch describes exactly how I feel about brutalist architecture and is also so fucking funny:
youtube
And honestly, you might be right about the oldest house. I haven't finished watching the playthrough yet and I haven't played it myself. I am getting most of my analysis from this Jacob Geller video that made me excited to learn more about the game, in which he does explicitly say, "The Oldest House hates you.":
youtube
From what I can tell from watching the game so far, however, The Oldest House is a building that is
aggressively hostile to the humans inside it
robs people of their individuality until they are aggressive shells of themselves who serve only the building
a government structure in which you have much more to fear from what's inside it than from what it is purportedly supposed to protect you from in the world at large
And I just think that, from an artistic perspective, brutalism was a perfect architectural choice for such a building!!
After learning about the video game "CONTROL" and watching Julia LePetit-Drawfee play it, I have amended my views on brutalist architecture.
I used to think that brutalist architecture was a completely miserable and hideous style of architecture to expect human beings to exist in or around, with absolutely no acceptable applications.
But NOW I think that brutalist architecture is a completely miserable and hideous style of architecture to expect human beings to exist in or around, which is actually quite suitable for a visually striking video game about a living building that fucking hates you and is actively trying to kill you and everyone in it. ✅ ✅ ✅
I'm being silly but tbh anyone who disagrees with me can go ahead and spend 10 years commuting in the dingy gray concrete brutalist dimness of the DC metro system and then fucking get back to me.

Films Watched in 2024 - (33/???)
Road House (2024) Doug Liman -- (3.5/5)
This fully deserved a theatrical release; there's only so much visceral brutality you can communicate while lining the pockets of Bezos. Naturally, Gyllenhaal is carrying this film on his back, effortlessly balancing the humorous beats with the physical ones; Arturo Castro (The Menu, Alternatino) has some great scene-stealing moments too. Unfortunately, Liman decided only an actual athlete would be a physical threat to Gyllenhaal and hired Conor McGregor as the second big bad (that we know basically nothing about to the point where he's introduced completely naked) to beat up on our protagonist and attempt occasional zingers. There's also a seemingly set up subplot about Gyllenhaal taking a kid under his wing that's abruptly abandoned and the female characters are a bit underdeveloped...fingers crossed the sequel improves on the faults.

First Generation soldier Rex totally pulling this with younger clones
youtube
Rex: You youngbloods don’t know shit! Back in my day, we had to holo-call people like this.  (Pantomimes dialing a rotary phone)
Young clone: So you used a rotary switch to holo people? How’s that OG?
Rex:  You fools don’t know how good you have it!  To recharge my blaster, I had to put a little ball down it and load gunpowder and take my long stick and wackety wackety wackety and SMACKADEY and BLASTEDY.

Arturo Castro moved to the U.S. from Guatemala just before he turned 20 but — before you make any assumptions — he doesn't like spicy food and he isn't good at salsa dancing. "I just have a weak stomach and weak ankles," he explains. He's never tried Ayahuasca. He's never met a shaman. ("I feel really left out — most white women in Beverly Hills have met way more shamans than I have," he says.)
Castro says he's "sort of an alternative version of a Latino," which brings us to the title of his Comedy Central series Alternatino — a play on the Spanish word for "alternate."
The sketch comedy show pokes fun at the assumptions supposedly woke white people have about Latinx people — "They love rolling the Rs in Arrrturrro," he says. "I'm like, I have never said my name like that once in my life" — and it also touches on serious subjects, such as migrant children being separated from their families at the U.S. border.
Castro has appeared on the comedy Broad City and the Netflix drama Narcos and — though he says he's proud of every role he's played — he's tired of the limited roles available to him and other Latinx actors.
"We're mostly sidekick positions ... or our ethnicity or immigration status is a big part of the narrative," he says. Castro just wanted to play a boring, slightly neurotic guy who happened to be Latino — in other words, he wanted to play himself.
Castro hopes there will be many future seasons of Alternatino, and he also has a romantic comedy and a psychological thriller in the works. "I believe talent is like a muscle and I want to see how far I can stretch it," he says.

related to the great "humanizing dictators" sketch on Alternatino, i did watch SNL this weekend. 99% for Ayo, she was good. (JLo was fine but her songs were boring to me)
Nikki Haley made an appearance. i feel like this was SNL "correcting" their mistake of having 45 on before. which just, NO. i guess they haven't internalized the fact that the Republicans are Nazis now. 45 or Nikki? they are both Nazis so while SNL thinks they are cute for making fun of 45, they are just showing they haven't learned their lesson from before. Which, as Alternatino shows, is don't fucking humanize dictators. Don't humanize fascists who want to be the President.
dipshits. that's really the kindest word i can say to SNL mgmt.
(also if you haven't seen the Fallon bit where he talks to 45, do yourself a favor and watch that before you watch the Alternatino sketch. double fuck to Fallon.)

Alternatino - Season 1 Premiere - Full Episode
The opening sketch of Alternatino gave me life, and he managed to keep that level up throughout.  This show is amazing.  Props to Arturo Castro for playing hard and taking no prisoners.
