Fatboy Slim - Praise You 1999

"Praise You" is a song by British big beat musician Fatboy Slim, and was released as the third single from his second studio album, You've Come a Long Way, Baby (1998). It reached number one on the UK Singles Chart and in Iceland, number four in Canada, number six in Ireland, and number 36 in the US. A total of six samples are used in the song. The song features a prominent vocal sample from the opening of "Take Yo' Praise" by Camille Yarbrough, as well as a prominent piano sample from the track "Balance and Rehearsal" from a test album entitled Sessions released by audio electronics company JBL in 1973. That recording session was for "Captain America", sung by Hoyt Axton; a snippet of Axton's vocals humming the "Captain America" melody can be heard in the album version of "Praise You." "Praise You" also features a guitar sample from the opening of "It's a Small World" from the Disneyland Records-released album Mickey Mouse Disco, the theme from the cartoon series Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids, the electric piano riff from "Lucky Man" by Steve Miller Band, and the drum beat from "Running Back To Me" by Tom Fogerty. In a 2021 interview with the website WhoSampled, Yarbrough said that she liked "Praise You" and its use of her vocals, feeling that Cook kept the essence of "Take Yo' Praise".

The accompanying video for "Praise You" was directed by Spike Jonze with Roman Coppola. Jonze starred in the film, under the pseudonym Richard Koufey, along with a fictional dance group: The Torrance Community Dance Group. The video intro described it as "A Torrance Public Film Production". The video was shot guerrilla-style – that is, on location without obtaining permission from the owners of the property – in front of puzzled onlookers outside the Fox Bruin Theater in Westwood, Los Angeles, California. In the video, a heavily disguised Jonze and the dance group, acting as a flash mob, dance to "Praise You", much to the chagrin of a theatre employee who turns off their portable stereo.

The video reportedly cost only US$800 to produce. It won three major awards at the 1999 MTV Video Music Awards: Breakthrough Video, Best Direction, and Best Choreography. It was also nominated for, but did not win, Best Dance Video. In 2001, it was voted number one of the 100 best videos of all time, in a poll to mark the 20th anniversary of MTV.

Ok just watched episode 3: learning to win. sway vs. mchucky

This episode was crafted so well. Gave us the introverted intellectual vulnerable hearthrob musician vs. the boisterous popular shit-talking quarterback jock storyline.

Since i like neither the bruins nor panthers it was more like watching a fun sports movie and letting the characters make me fall in love with them with those tropes in place. I really do compartmentalize how i interact with these teams and their players so ok let's break it down, here's how my heart and head battles it out:

Bruins? A bigass boo from this leafs fan. I hate them on principle just for that, for a generational og6 rivalry. But. But i respect their locker room. Their leaders have created a cohesive unit i envy tf out of for generations past present and future. They're a good group of ppl ...with a shittastic front office of old world hockeymen. Sorry to bruins fans for having to deal with that bs

Panthers? Another huge groan but for both personal reasons and the leafs thing. Yea kicked leafs ass in playoffs '23 round 2 but that's like whatever (that was leafs own doing, didn't bring it. or anything really). It's that personally i hate their style of play, it takes the fun out of watching the skill and speed of hockey. I can't abide by the dirty shit, just makes it un-fun for me.

Ok this is where it gets weird. Let's talk about the people

mtkachuk: i love him, i loved him with the flames, i love him still. Amazing kind gracious funny personable. But put him on the ice with the panthers and who? Who dis? No sir i do not know this man. I cannot explain why my brain does this but it's the only way i know how to enjoy Matthew while also having disgust for the panthers playing style. I mean maybe this is how/why we love/hate the teams we do. It hits the right or wrong chords in your own heart. So yea, that's the logic, rational or not.

Paul Maurice: i love this man and if i knew him in real life like maybe my uncle or someone, i would chat with him for hours during a family dinner party like i do with my favourite relatives who i respect so much. His interviews hug me to the core. He fascinates me with his clarity on life. I don't agree with what he has his players do, but i respect tf outta his drive and purpose and how he leads. Once again, a battle bw my heart and head *shrug*

Swayman: honestly i never paid much attention to him. I've never been a goalie crazy person so while i had classified him as one of the elite ones in the league, i wasn't ever taken by him (yes even thru all the cutesy goalie hugs). That said, it was really lovely getting to know him and what a beautiful voice. His dad was endearing as heck, reminded me of one of my colleagues. What a sweet gentle-hearted family, but also so tough mentally to get your kid into the nhl, while holding true to their vulnerable emotional side. Pretty fucking incredible i think. Sway got thru arbitration and used it as a checklist to drive himself further. Amazing. Fuck yea he's got an element of corniness to him but Matthew's corny as heck too in 24/7 florida frat boy party mode so whatever everyone's being their own true selves I'll embrace that.

I laughed very hard at the tkachuk family scenes. Good stuff. But hell no, no ty, i could not survive in that environment lmao. I do jokes yes, I'm usually the funniest person in social settings but i don't do shitting on each other stuff (why i hate hanging out with stand-up comics. improvisers tho? my favourite ppl, all about yes and'ing each other)

But all of that was great insight into the who what how why's of matthew and brady beyond any interview ever could. Pretty great what they've got going on. god how open those tkachuks can be with one another with sentiments disguised as insults and jokes, and not have feelings hurt. Ofc that family keeps on thriving. They can say anything to each other and know that they can fight back and still be supported. Like that's fuck awesome. I'm envious as hell. Just as i am tho, with how i was raised, i wouldn't survive them lol.

Back for, and I know you're shocked, 8.7 million a year. I have absolutely zero confidence the Pens will make it to the Playoffs but I have SO MUCH WANT for Crosby to be in the Playoffs again.

Do you actually think McDavid will eventually go to the leafs? I like the oilers and am not a big leafs fan but I’m not hugely anti them. But it just doesn’t make sense to me that if Connor left Edmonton, he’d go somewhere with so many of the same problems. I get the hometown angle but he’s talked about how a lot of his friends have left Toronto and I know his dad was actually a big bruins fan and his grandpa loved the habs. I just feel like if he leaves Edmonton, he’d leave Canada as a whole and end up somewhere in the us. I’m just curious what your thoughts are on the whole things.

MY PERSONAL MORE ELABORATE ANSWER: i think the oilers have shown a pretty significant failure to launch over the mcdavid era with a lot of stops and starts, and have essentially the same problems as they have always had, while the leafs have made (slow and extremely frustrating, but real) progress (at least, in the dubas era -- straight up no clue what treliving's whole deal is so far)(DON'T question it this is at least 50% leafs fan delusion but please ride).

however, the leafs are incredibly unlikely to have the space to sign mcdavid for anything close to what he's worth in the exceedingly rare event that he decides he does want to leave, which WILL be in free agency, if it happens. (mcdavid has the personal agency to force the oilers to trade him and to where. he will want a contender. no contender has the cap space for him, and nowhere with the cap space will be a contender, even with him, for the amount of assets they may end up giving up.) i also think that his leaving is largely dependent on what leon does -- he'll leave if drai does, if drai stays, he stays. and i think drai stays.

that being said he's already taken less to sign with the oilers already (yes, 12.5 is "less," he's Connor McDavid) so i can see him taking a discount to sign with a team he really believes in? but outside of edmonton i can't see who that might be. Destiny says the Kings. Don't worry about it though

Ableism in Hockey

[PT: Ableism in Hockey. End PT] Trigger warning: Ableist comments and language, uncensored slur. We already talk about the homophobia, misogyny, racism, abuse and bullying that's almost engrained in hockey culture. However, I don't see many people talk about the ableism that's way too common within hockey. Firstly, what is ableism?

Ableism is a form of discrimination, particularly towards people with physical, mental, intellectual and other forms of disabilities. Ableism towards those with mental illness is called sanism. Some examples of ableism include inaccessiblity, using ableist slurs (such as the r-slur), believing that disabled people are broken and need to be "fixed" or "cured", believing that people with certain mental health conditions are "evil" (ex. the evil alter stereotype towards folks with Dissociative Identity Disorder or believing that everyone with Narcissistic Personality Disorder is abusive). Ableism within hockey fandoms.

Some of you are already familiar with the "blind/deaf ref" joke. Almost everyone has made such jokes at some point (or at least laughed at one). Well, earlier today I was watching an Instagram reel featuring a league of blind hockey players. The comments, while most of them surprisingly supportive, also showed that such jokes aren't exactly harmless...

Worst part, I only saw two people take issue with these comments. TWO. Ironically enough, one of them was a referee who just so happened to actually be blind! While it's easy to assume they didn't know better (and they probably didn't, considering this joke is unfortunately way too common), it kind of serves as a reminder about how we view disabled hockey fans, players, coaches and, yes, even refs (especially those that are blind or deaf). And it's not just blind or deaf individuals being made fun of. It's also very easy to go into hockey spaces and see disability or neurodivergent-based buzzwords thrown around, such as "delusional" (or, and this is the only time I'll say this willingly, "delulu"), without the people saying it even realizing the harmful affects it could have on those who do genuinely experience delusions or psychosis (such as those with schizophrenia).

Ableism within the sport itself.

Within hockey, some youth organizations still use the m-word (shown below so people know what I'm referring to), despite it being considered an offensive term (and even a slur to some) towards people with dwarfism. In 2020, Hockey Canada dropped the term, but some organizations still use it, including USA Hockey.

Ableism by the players is also something we should address. In 2022, the Boston Bruins signed Mitchell Miller, a player who's infamous for bullying a black disabled teen (CW: Uncensored r-slur, brief detail of physical violence and unsanitary actions). He was eventually released two days later after backlash from fans (though the contract didn't end until February), however it was not a good look for Boston. (Man, ableism and racism. Talk about a double whammy). Earlier this year, a video surfaced of Carson Briere and a few other individuals pushing an unoccupied wheelchair down the stairs; the wheelchair was severely damaged and had to be replaced. Not long after the video surfaced, Mercyhurst Hockey cut him from the team. Both of the above mentioned have since signed with a team in Slovakia.

And this isn't even getting into the likelihood of ableist slurs being used on the ice. Lastly, many hockey arenas are still inaccessible, with many disabled fans unable to enter access in some, getting accessible seating is a hassle and many unable to buy tickets due to high prices (something that lots of disabled folks have issues with in many events.). Crowds and noise at venues can also be overwhelming to those on the autism spectrum (Like me!) and unfortunately not many hockey arenas have sensory rooms (However there IS some improvement being made on this end!) And unfortunately, watching from TV might not even be an option for some folks, as digital ads have also raised concerns about potentially causing seizures in photosensitive folks.

Disabled folks are considered an afterthought when it comes to fun events such as sports.

That may seem like an exaggeration, but unfortunately it's not. Disabled folks are always viewed as an afterthought in the world, and whenever basic accessible features are requested, they're told to "grow up snowflake" or that the "world doesn't revolve around you". And sports is no different. As the above show, disabled folks aren't taken seriously, especially when it's so easy to see blind and deaf folks become the butt of jokes when making fun of refs, mockery of addiction (alcohol addiction, gambling addiction, drug abuse, etc). And the worst part: Almost nobody is talking about it. Not until not anyway. We discuss the misogyny, the queerphobia and the racism. But we never talk about the ableism within hockey culture. Well, now's the time.

I am also not not interested in Bedard but also struggle with *waves hands at the Blackhawks' everything* - but there HAVE been some interesting/entertaining interactions so far (Matthew bullying him, Flower tripping him, Marchand trying to kidnap him for the Bruins à la McSpot fic, his deep discomfort/confusion during that one interview with Croz, and if memory serves, an oddly homoerotic video on a team bus with some guys from juniors) and I would be interested in seeing more of it - outside of his disgrace of a team.

(But also Matthew/anyone is so legit.)

you and me and on the same page here, anon! i would throw onto your list, obviously, mcdavid and draisaitl adopting him during summer training, but for some reason all of these interactions with the older, established guys in the league are so entertaining to me. it does not have the same vibes as mcdavid's rookie year! i can't put my finger on why it's different but i am having a good time, as long as i don't look directly at the blackhawks for too long.

ALSO, yes, matthew/anyone!!! (except people i don't like.) i know i am mostly in my main big pairings mode On Here but i really am like. i will ship anything. love to see some creativity in shipping! love to explore my guys as characters in different concepts and scenarios with different people!

NHL Logo Tier 2024-25 Season

This tier will have the ranking tier, and then a breakdown by team below it because I like to yap. I chose to do it for net season because of L.A and Anaheim changing their logos.

Top-notch fantastic:

Calgary Flames: Need I explain myself? Also Calgary bias, but the logo is clean, the colours are great, and it looks so good on the jerseys

Anaheim Ducks: I love the throwback and the look as a whole, it's amazing. It's nostalgic, it's fresh, it's fun.

L.A. Kings: Their second-best logo. I love the nod to the purple crown logo and the direction they went with this one.

I Like It, I Love It:

Colorado Avalanche: The colours are fantastic, it's a great nod to the Rocky Mountains, and it just works.

Dallas Stars: This one is clean-cut and no-nonsense. It works on both jerseys and the colours work well.

St. Louis Blues: I love that it pays homage to the Blues-music history of St. Louis with the quarter note.

San Jose Sharks: The teal is bold and I like it. The eastern conference is the same five colours in different combinations, so this is fun.

Minnesota Wild: Using the trees, river, and moon to make a bear head is an amazing idea and fitting for their name to add some wildlife to the logo

Pittsburgh Penguins: This one is a classic.

Buffalo Sabres: I just like it. Yes, it's very on the nose, but who doesn't want a giant sword on your logo?

BOOORING:

I just feel like these ones need some *pizazz*. They are a little dull for me, and don't have much personality or uniqueness to them.

Very Indifferent:

I have no particular feelings attached to these logos (with the exception of Edmonton) so they don't bother me.

What was the thought process here?

These ones just confuse me. Utah gets a pass until they have a name though.

Washington Capitals: Just, why? It's boring, plain, and just meh.

Columbus Blue Jackets: I'm just confused. They have a wonderful third logo, the cannon on blue, and this is what they choose to go with. I don't get the vibe they were going for, or the meaning of the logo.

Boston Bruins: The "B" is obvious, but the rest of it? I like the bear logo, but this is just underwhelming from such a historic franchise

13. Do you listen to music while you write?  If yes, what have you been listening to recently?

I usually cannot listen to music with lyrics while writing because it distracts the hell out of me, but I was blasing FYC's like a stranger on repeat while I was writing like a stranger (the fic). even though the lyrics don't fit 100%, something about that song seemed to me to capture Brad's anguish and heartbreak in such a visceral way -- especially when Bergy shows up at the hospital but it feels like everything has changed between them.

69. nice What are your favorite fics at the moment?

I've just recently made a bruins fic rec list, but to add onto it, I've been massively enjoying your And In Flu Enza (still thinking about Zee carrying a sleeping Jake in his arms 🥺) @pensultimate's talent and sheer understanding of marchy in standing tall had me following a pens blog much to my horror (but man, what talent) and in the non-hockey sphere @frankandpercy's old friends do tend to become old habit felt like i was right back in endeavour again, perhaps watching a cut scene of an unaired epilogue, my heart breaking and being mended every so beautifully ♥ honestly, i feel so honoured and lucky to be surrounded by all this talent.

74. Do you have a fic you wish got a bit more love?

I think I have a banger of a soulmate AU in a manual for living with defeat, though I realise not that much of it is out yet so I am hoping that more people will come around.

Also in an ideal world, for something like a moment would be among my top hockey fics engagement wise but I also get that it's not everyone's cup of tea, given *gestures hands*

Name: I usually put down Sonny when I need a pseudonym. Oddly enough this predates my fascination with Al Pacino.

Where do you call home? A used-to-be farm town in the great state of Massachusetts. Go Bruins.

Favorite Animal: Surprise surprise-- it's not the snail. I'm fond of rats and carnivorous dinosaurs.

Cereal of choice: I've started buying Honey Bunches in bulk. With almonds.

Visual, auditory, or kinesthetic learner: Probably a combination of auditory and kinesthetic? Like talk me through it while I do it slowly and then I'm set.

First pet: I've never really had a pet of my own. We lived in apartments for my entire childhood. My mom had cats when I was a baby, though.

Favorite scent: there's a Savers in a nearby town and every time I walk in I take a deep breath and smile. Mom says it smells like mildew. I say it reminds me of the locker rooms back when I used to play hockey, which usually smelled like sweat, beer, and yeah, mildew.

Do you believe in astrology? No and frankly I'm not fond of it, but I won't begrudge anyone their beliefs.

How many playlists do you have on your music service of choice? ...0. I just type the songs in manually and let it shuffle from there. Or listen to an artist's entire discography.

Sharpies or highlighters: On a personal level I like Sharpies more but I haven't seen mine in years and I don't ever have to use them. I don't do much with highlighters either but I bought a pack for my anatomy class and I might start using them in my sketchbook too.

Song that makes you cry: I really don't cry often but I remember when I was younger hearing "Travellin' Soldier" by the Chicks and bawling. He's just a kid! She's just a kid! They're alone and scared and they reach out for each other but the war sweeps it all away like a breaker takes a sandcastle out to sea!

Song that makes you happy: "Walk of Life" by Dire Straits. Bonus points if it's the music video that's just reels of sports wipeouts spliced with band footage.

Aand finally, do you write/draw/create? Yes! Not as much as I'd like to 'cause I'm busy and my sleep schedule is fucked but yes!! I draw a lot (mainly figures but I'm taking my very first art class right now). I also write sporadically, but the inspiration comes and goes.
