Dean hadnt called you since you left. Honestly, you didnât expect him to. However, there was a feeling clawing at you that you wanted him to. You wanted him to beg you to come back and tell you he missed you and loved you, too. Although, seventy-eight hours after leaving the Winchesters, you were unsure that phone call would ever come.
Over the previous three days, youâd scoured every library book on demonology you could get your hands on and prodded every community college professor that could possibly know any information helpful to you in breaking Deanâs deal. However, all you came up with were crossed eyes from staring at books for too long and several aging professors looking at you like you had three heads.
To your surprise, the phone on the center console next to you rang, the light from the small screen on the front of the flip phone illuminating a portion of the dark car. Hopeful, you picked it up.Â
âOh,â you thought. âJust Sam.â
âHello?â you said into the phone.
â(Y/N), hey, itâs good to hear your voice,â Sam replied.
âGood to hear yours, too,â you said, a little sadness in your tone. âIsâ Is Dean around?â
âNah. Heâs, uhâŚâ Sam trailed off, sighing.
âPolling the electorate?â you questioned, hoping Sam would understand your reference.Â
âYeah,â Sam laughed sadly. âIâm sorry, (Y/N).â
You sighed, ready to change the subject. âItâs okay. Whatâs goinâ on? Whyâd you call?â
âWhat, I couldnâtâve just wanted to talk to you?â
âYou wouldâve called before if that was the case,â you replied a little flippantly.Â
âFine, you got me,â Sam chuckled. âWas wondering if youâd found anything.â
âBesides an unreal level of frustration? No.â
âYeah. Same here.âÂ
You clicked on your turning signal and sighed. âHonestly, dude? I donât think weâre gonna find the answer in any book.â
âYouâre probably right,â Sam acknowledged. âDoesnât hurt to look, though.â
âI have looked, Sam. And thereâs nothing,â you responded, getting a little snippy with him. âIâm sorry. Iâm justââ you quickly apologized.
âI get it. Me, too.â
âIâll call you later, okay?â
âOkay,â Sam replied quietly. âDonât do anything I wouldnât do.â
You understood the warning in his tone and knew he somehow figured out your next stop would be summoning every crossroads demon you could possibly find and hunting others down for answers. âCanât make any promises, Sammy. Love you, bye.â
You snapped the phone shut and huffed. As badly as you wanted to continue your pursuit of these sons of bitches, you knew youâd be getting nowhere on the hour and a half of sleep youâd cumulatively been getting over the past five days.Â
***
The next morning, only feeling slightly refreshed from the three hours of sleep youâd gotten, you headed out into the early morning sun to find yourself a demon.Â
The previous evening, youâd found a bizarre story in the newspaper about a man whoâd died under mysterious circumstances after picking up a hooker on the day after those demons were released from Hell in your fight with the yellow-eyed demon. There had also been a cicada swarm around the motel the man had died in; a traditional demonic omen.
The coronerâs report indicated the man had been tied to the bed and found without his genitals, blood soaking every inch of the room. They concluded the man had bled to death. What made the case more disturbing and interesting was the fact that there was a deep bruise around his neck in the shape of two small, delicate hands.Â
Curious, you headed to Lincoln, Nebraska to interview the wife of the man whoâd passed.
âHi, Iâm with the FBIââ you flashed your fake badge at the woman as you spokeâ âand I just have a few questions for you regarding your husbandâs death?â
âI donât understand,â she said, beginning to tear up. âI already answered these questions for the police.â
âYes, maâam, I just have to do a follow-up of my own. A cross-examination of sorts.â
She nodded and stepped back from the door, allowing you into her home. She gestured for you to sit on the couch across from the chair she settled into.Â
âSo, what would you like to know?â she asked.Â
âWhat was your husband like?â
She laughed humorlessly. âWhy is that important? I mean, Iâm not even sure I really knew him. Married to that cheating bastard for fifteen years, and he does this to me.â
âWhat do you mean by âyouâre not sure you knew himâ?â you pressed.
âI mean,â she sniffed, âI just never wouldâve thought heâd cheat on me. With a whore, no less.â
You cringed at the implication of sex workers being âwhoresâ but kept your mouth shut anyway.Â
âI mean, in all the time we were together, I was the only girl he ever looked at,â she explained. âHe never drank, never went outâ hell, he felt guilty about watching porn! I just⌠I canât understand why heâd do this to me.â Her sobs wracked her body, and she put her face in her hands.Â
âIâm sorry, Mrs. Grishop. I just have one more question for you.â
She looked back up at you expectantly, still hiccuping from her cries.
âDid he have any enemies? Anyone who may possibly want to hurt him?â
She shook her head. âNo. Before⌠all this⌠he really was the nicest man I ever knew.â
***
Following leaving the womanâs house, you decided to head out to lunch to gather your thoughts. In the midst of writing them all down in your journal and munching on a fry, a story on the news caught your attention.Â
âSecond Victim of Possible Serial Killer Found,â read the headline at the bottom of the screen.
âWalter Morrisson, age forty-nine, was found dead in a Super 8 motel just off I-6 around eleven A.M. this morning. Authorities were called to the scene when the housekeeper found the body after assuming the man had already checked out."
âOh, fuck,â you thought. You tuned the rest of the broadcast out as your mind raced; whatever this thing was, it was just getting started.
You left a twenty dollar bill on the table to cover your meal and tip and quickly left the diner. You sped down to the Super 8 to begin investigating.Â
Upon entering the lobby, you noticed a scraggly young man sitting behind the desk. The room was completely empty aside from him.
âHi,â you grinned. âMy nameâs Christine McVie; Iâm with the FBI.â You flashed your badge. âYou mind letting me have a look at your security tapes?â
He nodded nervously, eyes flickering from your chest and back up to your face. He allowed you behind the desk to examine the security tapes from the previous night, and you clicked over to the camera just outside of the victimâs motel room. A gorgeous blonde woman escorted the man into the room, and she looked at the camera for just a split second. Had you not been paying close attention, you wouldâve missed it completely: her eyes were black.
Immediately, you had the man working the front desk make you a copy of the tape and brought it back to your motel room. You then uploaded it to your laptop and began scanning FBI and police databases youâd hacked into to find the womanâs identity. After about thirty minutes, you found a match.
âJennifer Lane, 28, Missing from Miami, Florida,â the information on your screen read.Â
âHoly shit,â you thought. âShe went missing the same night I killed Yellow Eyes.â Looking at the picture of Jennifer linked to the article you found confirmed the fact that this was your mystery demon. You felt awful for that poor girl trapped underneath and had no doubt she was going through a world of pain; a slave to her own mind.
âHousekeeping,â a sultry voice suddenly called from outside your door.
Unsettled, you drew your gun and pressed it to the door and looked through the peephole. You were met with the smiling face of the girl you had just been reading about, and the door abruptly slammed open and threw you back into your room. Two men with black eyes came into the room as well and grabbed under each of your arms before you even had a second to adjust.Â
You fought them as best you could which quickly proved futile.Â
âDonât worry, angel,â the beautiful blonde cooed, âweâre not gonna hurt you.â She grinned wickedly and pulled your bottom lip down with her thumb. âYet.â
The men holding you laughed as you continued to struggle, frantically flailing your limbs to shake them off.Â
âWhatâs the rush?â the demon asked you, roughly grabbing the sides of your face. âYâknow, you give a girl all kinds of nasty ideas.â Her lips ghosted over yours, and you suddenly found yourself unable to resist leaning forward slightly to kiss her. She kissed you deeply and furiously, causing you to stop fighting the two demons holding either side of you. You could feel them pulling your arms behind your back and tying them together, as well as your legs, but you could do nothing to fight off the woman before you.Â
When youâd been bound, the demons dragged you out to a car and threw you in the trunk of it. Trying not to panic, you tried to keep track of how long they were driving for and how many rights and lefts theyâd been taking. However, after the second hour of driving, it was all becoming a bit much to keep track of.Â
Suddenly, the car came to a stop. You tried to prepare for whatever was ahead of you mentally and cried out when a demon roughly grabbed your hair. He hauled you out of the trunk and unceremoniously tossed you over his shoulder. You kicked and fought as best as you could, screaming, âLet me go!â You kicked the manâs stomach with all your might. âLet me go, you son of a bitch!â
â(Y/N)!â you heard an all-too familiar voice yell. Your stomach dropped at the sound of Deanâs voice, unwilling to face him after your confession and having not spoken for a week.Â
âLet go of me, you fucking asshole!â You wriggled even harder now and were suddenly aware that the man carrying you stopped moving. He roughly tore you off his shoulder and stood you on your shaky legs in front of the steps up to a house. You came face to face with Dean being held back from crossing the line of salt blocking the doorway by Bobby and Sam.Â
Afraid your voice would fail if you spoke, you said nothing but held Deanâs gaze.
âWe come with a peace offering,â the gorgeous blonde whoâd kidnapped you purred, dragging her nail harshly down your jawline and breaking the skin along it. You hissed in pain and could see Dean fight against Bobby out of the corner of your eye. âYou give him back to us, and weâll give her to you.â
âNice try,â Sam replied. âHow do we even know thatâs (Y/N)? How do we know sheâs not possessed?â
âYou donât." The woman gripped your chin. âBut trust me, you donât wanna see what happens if you leave me with her for much longer.â
And then, all hell broke loose. Someoneâ you were pretty sure you knew whoâ charged the demons holding you hostage and you heard Bobby yell, âSaltâs broken!â as the demon holding you up dropped you to the floor. About ten demons ran past you into the house, and you were left trying to get out of the binds you were held in. You were growing more and more frustrated by the second until someone came up from behind you.
âNeed a little help?â a gorgeous blonde asked, smirking down at you.Â
âWho the hell are you?â you asked. âGet away from me!â
âBaby, if I wanted to kill you, I wouldâve already.â The woman pushed you upright into a sitting position and cut through the ropes binding your hands.Â
Confused and startled, you watched the woman walk up to the house. âYouâre welcome,â she remarked over her shoulder.Â
âThank you,â you replied, still confused. You shook your head to snap yourself alert and stood. You were completely unsure of what to do now; you desperately wanted to help your friends, but you were scared of facing Dean and had no weapons. Alone outside of a house you didnât recognize deep in the woods, you decided to hotwire the car the demons brought you there in.Â
By some miracle, you managed to find the interstate and, eventually, your motel. When youâd showered, changed, and dressed the deep bruises and brush burns on your wrists from the rope the demons had used on you, you wrapped your arms around your stomach and laid on your side in bed.
You didnât get much sleep that night, though; you were too busy stifling tears while your mind ran wild with possible scenarios that couldâve happened after you abandoned the boys. You felt horribly guilty already.
Your guilt was made even worse when Bobby called you around five in the morning.
âWhat the hell was that?â he scolded through the phone.
You grimaced. âBobbyââ
âNo, (Y/N). You donât abandon family like that,â he raged.
âI didnât have any weapons! And since when do I have a family?!â
âSince the day I found you in the woods holding your guts in your goddamn hands!â he roared, and your guilt immediately sank deeper.Â
âBobby, Iâm sorryââ
âYou donât have to apologize to me, kid. Itâs Sam and Dean Iâd worry about,â he replied, voice softening slightlyâ or, as much as Bobbyâs voice could, anyway.
âWhat? Why?â
âYou left again. Without saying goodbye. Or making sure that they were okay. Deanâs pissed; Samâs just hurt.â
âOuch,â you thought. âIâm sorry. I just didnât wanna be in the way, and I didnât have any weapons, and when I saw that girl going to help you, I figured it was better if I just leftââ
âSo you saw her, too?â Bobby questioned.
âOf course, I saw her. Why wouldnât I have seen her?â you replied.
â âCause Sam said she disappeared. And the knife she had killed three demons,â Bobby explained.
âWhat?! What the hell kind of knife can kill demons?â you exclaimed.
âAsk me yesterday, and I wouldâve said thereâs no such thing,â he said. âI thought Sam mighta been losinâ his mind, but since you saw her, too...â Bobby trailed off. âLook, I think you should give âem a call. Just let âem know youâre all right. And apologize.â The last part of Bobbyâs statement sounded more like an order.
âIâll call Sam,â you replied after a moment.
âNo, (Y/N), Dean, too. You two need to sort out whatever the hellâs wrong with you,â Bobby asserted.Â
You went quiet for a moment.Â
âAnd call me when you get wherever youâre goinâ,â he finished, âso I know youâre okay.â
The line cut out, and you smiled sadly. You felt absolutely horrible for leaving the way that you did, and you knew the right thing to do would be to call Sam and Dean; separately. You knew you had to face up to Dean at some point, but it just didnât seem like the right time. But, Christ, did you miss him. You wanted him to apologize for not calling, you wanted to apologize for leavingâ there were so many things youâd say to him. And yet, you couldnât bring yourself to pick up the phone.Â
You got up from your bed and crossed in front of the blackened television, jumping at the sight of your reflection. It was your guard uniform once more, scrapes up the left side of your arm and face, hair a complete mess, and buttons on your shirt buttoned haphazardly. You tried to steady yourself and take a breath.Â
You hated trying to deal with this alone. Your body didnât feel like your own anymore. You felt you couldnât control the world around you like you used to feel before the prison case. It felt like things would never be okay, and you were never going to feel at home in yourself again. You didnât like feeling helpless or like you needed anyone, but you truly needed your friends. Your pride fought your rational mind valiantly, telling you that you shouldnât call because you can handle this alone. You shouldnât call because youâve never needed anyone before; why would you now? And yet, there was another part of you saying that youâve always needed someone, this was just the first time you actually had someone.Â
***
The day after leaving Lincoln, Nebraska, you began driving aimlessly again. You almost cried when you turned on the engine and rock music didnât immediately start blaring from the speakers. The seats of the car felt uncomfortable and made you miss the polished leather of the Impalaâs. You loved driving, but it didnât feel right without Dean and Sam in the front seat ahead of you.Â
Sam would often joke that he and his brother were your babysitters due to your designated seating positions in the car, and Dean would often say he wished he had âthat sliding window thingââ âpartition,â âthank you, Sam,â so he didnât have to hear you chirping from the backseat.Â
None of the radio stations could rival the comforting background noise that was Deanâs cassette tape collection. You felt cramped without your seat to spread out across. The thing that made you call Sam, though, was the moment you slammed on the brakes and the book Sam read to you about Egypt while you had your concussion flew out of your duffel bag on the seat next to you. Tears swam in your eyes at the sight, and you finally gave in.Â
âWhat, (Y/N)?â Sam annoyedly answered the phone.Â
âJesus. Harsh,â you thought. âI, uh. I just wanted to call and say that Iâm sorry,â you began. âFor leaving. Both times. And⌠just wanted to tell you that I hope youâre okay.â
You could practically hear the aggravation leaving Samâs body as you spoke. One of your favorite things about your friend was how forgiving of a person he was.Â
âI appreciate that,â Sam replied. He paused for a minute. âWhyâd you do it, man?â
âI didnât have any weapons. I saw the blonde chick go in to help you after she cut me loose, so I figured, Iâd be doing more harm than good by stayingââ
âNo. The first time,â Sam cut you off.
âDean didnât tell you?â you asked, genuinely surprised. âI thought you knew this whole time.â
â(Y/N), since when does Dean tell me anything. I mean, it literally took me nearly beating it out of him for him to tell me that if the dealâs broken, I dieââ
âWhat?!â you exclaimed, furious. âSince when? Why the fuck would he make that deal?!âÂ
âI said the same thing,â Sam replied calmly.Â
âHeâs so fucking selfish!â
âI completely agree.â
âHe doesnât get to be mad at me for leaving when I literally told him I love him, and heâs gonna fucking leave me in a year because of some stupid demon deal!â you continued to yell, not realizing what youâd admitted to Sam.
He was taken aback. âWhoa, you what?âÂ
You suddenly processed what youâd said. âYeah. I did.â
âJesus,â Sam sighed. âIâm so sorry, (Y/N/N).â
âItâs fine,â you replied, suddenly feeling like you were too vulnerable. âIâm just pissed.â
The younger brother paused for a moment. âWill you at least talk to him? Try to work things out?â
âNot a chance in hell,â you scoffed. âI donât want things to work out. I donât wanna watch him die in a year, Sammy.â Your voice quivered.
He paused again. âI get it. I wouldnât want to either if I were you.â
âIâm sorry,â you said softly.
âMe, too,â he replied. âWill you at least call every once in a while?â
Your chest ached at the realization that you may not be hunting with the brothers again for quite some time. âAbsolutely.â
You couldâve sworn you heard him sniffle on the other end of the line. âBye, (Y/N).â
âTill next time, Sammy.â

I don't know if it's been spoken about yet, but
In season 2 of Shadow and Bone, we find out that Sturmhond the Privateer was the one behind Dreesen, the wealthy merchant who hired the Crows to kidnap Alina the Sun Summoner and bring her to Ketterdam.
Where in Season 1, we saw the entire scene with Alexie and the heartrender Milana, and it kinda seemed like Dreesen wants the Sun Summoner for his own profit.
Turns out, Dreesen was just another pawn in the grand plan and the real mastermind behind it all was Sturmhond all along.
What a twist!
But Sturmhond the privateer is actually Prince Nikolai of Ravka under disguise.
So all this time, Prince Nikolai of Ravka was trying to get Alina Starkov the Sun Summoner, kidnapped from the Little Palace, which is under the protection of Ravkan Royalty and is the home of the second army of Ravka, the Grisha themselves. That too by a gang of the Barrel of Ketterdam.
I mean, look at them
Yeah, definitely not sketchy at all.
So why is it, that the Ravkan Prince wants their Sun Summoner, the one and only saving grace of his country, to be taken from the most secured place in all of the world, which is under the protection of his own family and is in his own country, and brought to the literal bottom of the hell that is Ketterdam, by a sketchy gang of the Barrel.
Really, it doesn't make much sense.
Most of the YouTube videos explaining SaB season 2 I saw said it was just lazy writing or a plot hole or just something the writers wrote to make the characters more interesting and so on and on and on.
Honestly, I too, had thought the same. However, that was until I re-watched the show for like the 20th time, and saw this scene very closely.
And this got me thinking.
What if? *Drum rolls please*
What if, Prince Nikolai had a hunch about what the Darling was planning to do with Alina and the fold?
Just hear me out here.
Prince Nikolai, as shown in Season 2, is not new to the family political scenarios in the Royal family of Ravka, as well as the political stances of Ravka and the other countries. He is aware of a lot of information that even his family may not be aware of. And with his Sturmhond persona, let's just say this man has quite a lot of sensitive and private information under his belt.
But other than valid information, Prince Nikolai is also incredibly intuitive in nature. We know that Nikolai doesn't trust even the King's Aparet, so it might not be a long shot to say that he doesn't trust General Kirigan either. So maybe, it is possible that Prince Nikolai had a doubt about General Kirigan's loyalty to the crown and to the country. He could've had a hunch that General Kirigan might turn on his own people and use Alina in a way that can cause severe damage to his country.
It's not like Nikolai hasn't seen this man his entire life and doesn't understand how much he's capable of with his shadow summoning powers.
But unlike his elder brother Vasily, Prince Nikolai understands politics. He understands and respects Grisha powers and the second army. He understands that he cannot go against General Kirigan as Prince Nikolai. He knows that the second army is loyal to General Kirigan, and if he goes after General Kirigan directly, it will only cause another war between the first army and the second army. And this will cause an immense amount of bloodshed within the country as history will repeat itself, and this time even the Royals won't be spared from it. He knows that with the neighboring countries being at war with Ravka, the fold being a major concern for the country, and the western parts of the country trying to get independence, a war between the first and the second army will cause the ultimate collapse of Ravka. And Nikolai being the ideal king, the self righteous man and the patriot he is, could not let that happen.
Which is why he decides to go for it by kidnapping the Sun Summoner and handling it all in a more politically balanced way. My guess is that Nikolai intended to keep General Kirigan at a distance from Alina, and get her to destroy the fold while standing beside her himself (which he eventually did, bless his soul!), so that if Kirigan ever tried to weaponize the fold (which he did!), he won't get the chance to get on with it.
Things, however, definitely don't go according to his plan and we know the rest that happens in the show.
Well in the end, things did work in his favour though, well except that damned Nichevoya.
(Also ignoring the whole first army slaughtering the second army and the bloodshed thing that went on in season 2, which I'm pretty sure could have been avoided if the Crows had brought Alina to Sturmhond in time as it was planned, but alas!)
So this is entirely my theory. I've no clue if it's already been stated or is there any other theories or if there's anything specified by the writers or actors. If there's any gap or any wrong information or a grammatical mistake there, please forgive me. I wrote this instead of sleeping.

I canât fucking believe the poll ended in a tie! A fucking tie! Now youâre going sit here and read the two choices mashed terribly together.
Also since this month is very important. I decided to post spoilers for the plot of the main story, The Isekaiâd Oracle. Just snippets of future events that take place in the story. I just want to have fun this month before getting either bad or good news.
I Saw You Once In a Dream, Maybe|| Pt. 6
âOh I don't know, my day was completely full. I'm just here for my free breakfast.â You said with a smile.
Monkey King didn't seem to take this in the best way. He tensed up only for his body to slump over the counter. Defeat was written across his face.
âOh, really? Then again, we barely met, it was rude of me to ask.â
âMaybe but,â You lean into him and smirk. âI think I can make some room for the Great Sage himself.â
Monkey King's energy immediately zapped him back to life. His eyes shine brightly, as a more cheeky atmosphere comes off him.
âYouâre too generous! I'm honored that you gave me some of your time.â
âMk what am I seeing right now?â Tang asks.
âI honestly have no idea.â Mk states, hardly understand what's happening.
Pigsy huffs placing a bowl in front of Monkey King. He mutters under his breath angrily before heading off into the kitchen.
âTell me Great Sage, what exactly brought you here today?â You asked.
âI'm just dropping off the kid since I didn't want him to head back home by himself.â
You glance at Mk, who seemed to be in good condition. This contradicts his earlier statement that he fell off a cliff.
âIs that so? That was generous of you, though he doesn't seem to be hurt in any way.â You state, trying to tear little holes in this facade.
Monkey King nervously scratches his head.
âWell, he's my successor for a reason. He heals at a faster rate than normal so when we got here, he was all good.â Monkey king takes a bite from his noodles. He's refusing to look at you now.
âAlright let's cut to the chase, shall we?â You faced forward and picked up some noodles with your chopsticks.
âYes maâam.â
âHow long did it take for you to come up with this plan?â
âA week. How did you know?â
âBeen plagued by a certain dream since the beginning of this year.â
âCare to elaborate?â
âWe will when we head out. Let's go into more detail in a more private area.â
âIn my defense, I really like you and I want to get to know you better.â
You drop the noodle in shock. Your cheeks heat up with your face turning a deep red. Quickly turned to see him, but he wasn't facing you. Instead, Monkey King was stuffing his face with noodles, but you can see his cheeks were a light shade of pink. Nothing came out of you but strained noise. You were utterly speechless. From your dreams, you knew he was very open with his feelings but this wasn't a dream. Yet he still said it without any hesitation.
âI would like to get to know you better too.â You said staring into your bowl.
âReally? After all of this.â
âI won't lie, this plan of yours was surprising but I wouldn't expect anything less from the pain in the ass Sun Wukong.â
âHehe, sorry I just couldn't come up with anything else.â
âIt's fine, this could be a fun story to tell someday.â
You both laugh, finally relaxing from the tense mood. However, for everyone else, it couldn't be said the same. They stare at the two of you in confusion and questioning themselves if they should jump in. Only to push it aside, not wanting to ruin the moment.
âAlright let's go.â You said putting down some money on the counter.
âWait already?â
âYeah, I have some errands to do. What don't want to join?â
âOf course I do! I was just expecting more time to prepare.â Monkey King summons a puff of smoke. Covering him and disappearing instantly. He was wearing a hooded jacket with sunglasses.
âOkay, I'm ready.â
You hold back your amazement and head to the entrance.
âBye everyone, see you guys tomorrow.â You wave at them cheerfully as they say their goodbyes.
âSo where are we heading first?â
âHm, I need to get groceries and pick something up from my parentsâ place.â
âMeeting the parents already? If I knew you were this crazy about me, I would have tried this plan sooner.â
âWeâre not dating yet.â
âYet?â Monkey King gives you his widest smirk.
âYou know what I mean!â
âDo I?â
You groan, hiding your red face behind your hands.

just finished a binge watch of shadow & bone season 2... have some thoughts!
(many many spoilers for every single episode, so I'm putting this under the cut)
generally: absolutely amazing. The incorporation of the crows & the relationships within the crows (cough WESPER WESPER WESPER cough) are especially well done.
however. I gotta say I'm mad about what happens to Alina. So much of the books is about how Alina doesn't want to be the one to fix Ravkaâshe doesn't want to be queen, she's only doing it because it needs to be done. look at this quote:
âThey wanted a Grisha queen. Mal wanted a commoner queen. And what did I want? Peace for Ravka. A chance to sleep easy in my bed without fear. An end to the guilt and dread that I woke to every morning. There were old wants too, to be loved for who I was, not what I could do, to lie in a meadow with a boyâs arms around me and watch the wind move the clouds.â
She wants peace for Ravka, she doesn't want to spend her life ruling the country. That is so much of the point of Shadow and Bone â the happy ending isn't marrying a king and fixing the country; it's an ordinary life, full of ordinary thingsâif love can ever be called that. (interesting that nikolai was brought into that quote in the show. love that he's a hardcore malina shipper. actually I think I might like nikolai more in the show than in the books, which is saying something).
but ANYWAY the show just. destroyed alina's whole arc there. throughout the show, she's all "I need to fix Ravka" and she seems to want that responsibility, rather than just wanting it to actually get done.
and then the ending. using merzost to resurrect Mal. not losing her Sun Summoner powers (unless you count possibly trading them for Darkling powers, which I don't). MARRYING NIKOLAI. Mal becoming Sturmhond 2.0 is fun & all, and the show did lead up to it pretty well, but it's just not what book!Mal would have wanted. STOP HAVING A CRISIS OF PURPOSE AND LIVE AN ORDINARY LIFE FULL OF ORDINARY THINGSâ
so yeah I might be mildly irritated by some parts of the show there
that being saidâNikolai is SO well done
I think I might've mentioned this earlier, but show Nikolai might just be better than book Nikolai (Nikolai in TGT, at least)
like... the whole love triangle situation was significantly better? Nikolai and Mal didn't hate each otherâthey actually had a pretty great friendship (and I'm guessing people are going to start shipping Nikolai/Mal/Alina a lot more sometime soon)? Nikolai didn't basically assault Alina? I'm actually really impressed since usually a show would Up The Drama, and this one didn't <3
Nikolai giving Alina the compass, which is associated with Mal's whole true north thing... and then Mal getting the compass in the end... actually pretty cool
the quote about hope being the wind in the sails! "when people say impossible, they usually mean improbable"! yes yes YES !!!
zoyalai hints <3 tbh I was hoping for more than that but I am obsessed with what I got <3
also! dominik being alive at the start! so we get to meet him! and get bits of backstory!
and then he died which. I was expecting. but also :(((((((((
speaking of dying.
DAVID AND GENYA OH MY GODS
kinda disappointed that they skipped the "I'm not ruined. I'm ruination" quote
but on the other hand! the I know metal speech! that was AMAZING <333333333 they are so soft
and then they. kill david off. and i CRY
THAT WASN'T SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN UNTIL ROW
so yeah upset about that but not really mad... denya is definitely one of the best ships in the show...
and then!!! the crows!!! the crows!!! the crows!!!
SO MUCH WESPER CONTENT. we are BLESSED guys. Jesper & Wylan having a one-night stand pre-canon??? then getting to know each other??? and having a more serious relationship??? amazing showstopping top-tier content
a bit worried about whatever happens in the soc spinoff when jesper finds out that wylan is a van eckâcould be kinda painful
also I'm hoping they entirely skip jesper kissing kuwei, never really liked that bit in the books
"I kinda like your face" <<<< "maybe I liked your stupid face" but admittedly it's hard to do the book quote when you don't have the Kuwei tailoring plot
Wylan saving the day by knowing cool botanical facts <3 I love him so much guys
actually the whole thing with Sankta Neyar is fantastic? like WOW I was expecting to dislike any non-books content but I did NOT that thing was GREAT (and showed that there's a future for superpowerful Grisha that is not becoming the Darkling, which is excellent because it's TRUE).
Inej & Mal & Tolya & Tamar going off to hunt slavers togetherâsome mixed feelings about that. I have faith that Inej & Kaz will meet up again in future seasons, but idk?
kinda weird how all those CK plot elements showed up... Kaz beats Pekka and makes him beg, but then Pekka just starts running Hellgate from inside? no real consequences? unsuccessful revenge? and all the plot from CK (fake plague, Alby) is used up already
so yeah that was annoying
but also the scene where Inej asks Kaz what he wants... and you can SEE the words You, Inej. You running through his head... and then he says "to die buried under a mountain of my own gold"... every time they quote the books I go FERAL and this is no exception
so basically I'm worried about what they'll do with the crows in possible later spinoffs/seasons but also I absolutely adore all the content they gave us <3
fun fact: I watched the whole show on 1.5x speed because I only had 5 and a half hours. I used subtitles so I could always understand what they were saying, the only weird thing was any shot of anyone walking ever. still worth it so that I could watch everything, though <3

DRAtchet week 2022 Day 9: Waking up from a Dream.
(First Day)||(Day 8)||(Day 10)||(Last Day)
After Drift leaves his jailers on they floor. The rest of the team retaliates by drugging Ratchet.
Tw: for horror stories amount of blood. Nightmare sequence to represent a mass killing. Also Dream Drift hurts Ratchet.
"Paging Doctor Ratchet. Doctor Ratchet please come to the front desk." Strange, the hospital is even brighter than it usually is today. The once black garnet flooring, now a soft, polished marble. His feet clicks as he makes his way towards the call.
He has a hard time keeping his eyes open. A long shift with no breaks would make him sleepy. Ratchet is hoping that this summon will just be a thankful patient coming to thank him. He just wants to clock off and head home. Take a deep soak and recharge, not that he doesn't like work. It's fulfilling and he can't imagine doing anything else, but sometimes it wears a mech down.
When he makes it to the end of the hall he presses the button to get on the elevator. With good luck he manages to get one with no one else on so it will be much faster. Making his way out the door and towards the front desk, he takes the time to look around. The sun comes through the big glass windows. The heat fills especially good on his plating. They are not that many patients who will have to stay in the hospital, leaving the floor mostly empty.
By a blink of his eye he is now in front of the room. Walking up to meet the reception towards their side as he greets them. Strange, they've worked here for a while now, about as much time as Ratchet has. He can't remember what their name is or even what they look like. They have red eyes right? That is compounding with the sun seemingly covering their face that Ratchet can't get a good look. Their voice is gone too, just white noise echos against his mics as they try to greet him.
"Drift?" Ratchet looks forward. How odd. He like Ratchet has a very important but busy job. Their schedules never match up for them to meet up at this hour. "Huh?" He looks back at the receptionist. They're teasing him and Drift. He guesses that Drift isn't usually this public with his affections, but he normally does romantic gestures like this.
"Ratchet." He can feel Drift's hand underneath his chin, using it as leverage to guid his focus back to him. "I asked if you wanted join me on a day on my day off."
"Right." Ratchet pulls away and composes himself. "Yes Drift." Ratchet leaves his hand out so Drift can take it. "I would love nothing more."
"Great." He bends down to kiss the back of Ratchet's hand. His left hand moves from his back to the front. Drift presents him with rose quart flowers wrap up as a bouquet. "I wouldn't know what to do with these of you said no." His voice is shy, golden eyes look around and try to focus away from him. In stark contrast to his bright white and glittering sliver paint job becoming of his lenient position in Prime's Vanguard.
"You could always give it to some young couples." Ratchet takes the gems, running them with his fingers to admire the craftsmanship.
"Yeah and I could have easily not bought them." Ratchet gives him a sympathetic smile. It isn't that Drift is cheap, far from it as he would buy anything and everything he so much as acknowledge. It always overwhelms him as he never likes spending so much. However, each gem has a nice hum he can feel when he touches them. A nice smell too...
Or it should be. Instead a strange, overwhelming stench of something burning fills his nasal senses. A splash of liquid hits against his ped, dripping off his hands. Ratchet looks down to see a stream of energon spilling out of his shattered hand. All of it making a raising tide rapidly filling the hospital. In just a few seconds it will reach his lower lips and drown him.
When did he hurt his hand. How could something like this happen. More importantly... "Drift!" Looking back up he sees his dear conjunx looking back at his. Black voids were his eyes should be. More blood gushing from his mouth with he turns his head back. Why can't he move his body. What is happening...
"This is what you get for not cooperating." Drift speaks, both hands move to take Ratchet's arm. Deep, sharp claws tear through his frame like water as he drags his arms out.
"Drift." The blood is still rising.
"I warned you what will happen."
"Ngh-" Ratchet can't respond. His voice box feels like lead. Frame hurling over as he can feel the gritted up dirt moves to expel out of his mouth. Eyes captured by a shining light as Drift takes his claw out of his arms and raises it up.
"This is what you get." The claw inches slowly to the top. The reflecting of his fingers as they go higher in the air blinds him. "This is what you get. Playing hero will always leave you dead in the ditch." Drift then swips his claw. Ramming it straight through the front of his core until his whole hand makes it to the other side.
He can't scream. He can't move. Worse is that Ratchet can't remember what it is that he's done. Why is this happening, how is it happening. Where is he and what happened to the picture perfect hospital he was just in. The blood has now risen so high that Ratchet's head hovers above the ceiling. Swaying at a wind rate so fast that it matches the strongest of hurricanes. His feet don't touch the ground while Drift keeps him against the wall, as he takes out the other hand and gets ready to strike.
Then he slashes him and flashes of a different life play around him.
Of waking up in the harvest spot facility. Being told a run down of his function. Slash.
Of being assigned to a medic and holding onto the spare parts his frame is equipped with. Slash.
Of being towed around by a chain around his throat. Slash.
Of watching his mentor opening his compartments and yanking out the peice he needs. Never waiting for Ratchet to brace himself. Slash.
Of the sensation of fingers shoving away new parts to keep running. An unbearable weight of seeing dead mech being salvaged for parts. Slash.
Being sold to engineers not five years later as his mentor upgrades to a newer unit. Being scolded in front of his office like an invalid being. "You were the worst thing I ever spent any money on." Slash.
Ratchet didn't know that life. He swears that he never has, but it all feels familiar to him. He finally has the strength to cover his mouth and stop some bleeding.
The memories of him assisting engineers repair a space bridge. Then resold to a construction company. Of the owner hassling him to a back room. Forcing his panels open. Being scared and overwhelmed. Overreacting and pushing off his frame.
There was blood. Something happened. Malpractice on his medical record, even though he wasn't even a real medic. Another bot sponsored him. They put him into school. Difficult years of studies and dancing in social working.
Another new debter. Then another. He remembers only recieving his medical license as Oilslick walks into the room along with his sponsorship. A miserable life. His miserable life. That's why Ratchet is okay with running away. He has nothing to stay for. No one waiting for him.
"Ratchet." Drift's voice rings out. Slash. "Please wake up." Sla-
---
Here on the cold hard floor, Deadlock has put Ratchet down on. Those rat bastards have found and captured Ratchet. They overdose him and left him tripping badly on the floor.
The one good thing about his past is that pumping out a bot's engine is nothing new. He can do that on himself even at the climax of his high. Not that it makes him feel better about this. The last thing he would never want to see is Ratchet's frame thrashing on the tile.
His mouth is foaming and he's still not listening to him. Twitching his hands while his legs almost hit him. Whatever stuff they put in him is definitely the worst kind of drug. Probably laced it with the worm.
He can't stand being so helpless. Of being useless, failing Ratchet. They tell you not to try to wake up a mech on a bad trip, but he ain't got time. Their buddies are gonna come back in to see if he takes their offer. They have to be long gone before those lackeys see all the dead mechs on the floor and the mess of blood in the room. Deadlock told him that this would happen.
He also knows that a scene like this will make Ratchet real upset. "C'mon Ratchet." He tries a softer touch. "Please wake up."
Ratchet stops struggling, okay better. He can work with this. He puts one arm underneath Ratchet legs, the other guides his frame to cradle over his chest. Gentle, gotta be real gentle. Opening the door of the basement, getting to the ground floor and shattering the first window he sees, he takes Ratchet through. Holding him close. Letting his aura wrap around them.
Using it as a shield as he takes walks them back home.
He was too careless. He should have never let this happen. Now Deadlock has a new target and he hopes Ratchet will turn his eyes away from this job too.

Chapter four, The Underground
- a few days later -
The wind whistles by, the bright summer sun shining on the sand, as a bone flies by and lands in the ground.
In an arena, G and Killer are sparring with each other as Hunter oversees.
Killer rides his blaster as G flings bones at him from the sky.
He summons two blasters, and In response G flings himself away from the blast, towards where killer's going, and they each summon bones in their hands to block one another.
They both jump away from one another and as they landed, G dashed at Killer, however his phone rang as they were about to clash
"Gah- holding, it's my family." Killer said walking to the edge
G gasped as he said "wait I just noticed! I don't think I even know your family!"
As Killer finished his call, he looked back to the group "Huh? Oh, yeah I never brought them up I guessâŚ" he said as he scratched the back of his head.
"What was the call about?" G asked, wondering if they have to postpone their sparring, to which killer responded
"Oh yeah, uhm. I've gotta watch their house while they're gone. they live overâŚ" he paused as he scanned the surroundings, "AH! there." He said as he pointed at a mountain nearby.
G turned and squinted at the mountain. "There's a house up there?" He questioned, as killer chuckled.
"No, that is the house." He said as he summoned his blaster
"WAIT! You live in a mountain?!?" G said surprised "wait could I join you? I wanna see your house!" He pleaded as killer got on his blaster
"And I wouldn't mind joining! I also haven't seen where you live!" Hunter said smiling as he walked over
"I- wait-" killer said as he looked to his friends. sighing, he continued "sure. Why not?" He said as he smiled back
They all got onto killers blaster and flew to his house
They all arrived at a small plateau, with a large hole In the middle.
"Whelp, this is it" Killer said gesturing at the hole.
"It's a hole in the ground?" G asked, to which killer laughed, and said "nah, I just like to mess with people." He said, holding a peace sign as he turned around, and fell backwards.
And as they looked down, they saw him sprawled out in a patch of flowers.
he chuckled and looked up. "C'mon, it's safe! I do this like every day!" He said as he got up. "Just one at a time! The flowers may be soft but bones aren't!" He finished.
Hunter jumps as soon as Killer is out of the way, and G follows soon after.
As he fell down, he closed his eyes. The fall feeling terrifying, for reasons even he didn't know.
G was never scared of heights, but something about this mountain seemed eerily familiar. The fall seeming endless, he wanted to open his eyes to just know how long he'd have to hear the whooshing of the wind in his ears.
But in a moment he feels the fall soften, "I surely must be dead" he thought, but the slow drifted to a stop as he fest the soft embrace of what felt like pillows, or a nice hug.
As he opened his eyes he found himself in the bed of flowers he saw the others land in.
He got up wiping a single tear from his cheek and followed the others
They first entered a large purple-ish pink hall, with large columns going from the floor to the ceiling. As they keep walking the go from hall to hall they see smaller monsters, froggits and migosps hiding in holes in the wall.
Until one of them walk up to them.
"Hey buddy!" Killer said kneeling down to the froggits, feeding it a slice of bread "this is my pal!" He said.
"Oh! Pal, this is Hunter, and this is G!" He said gesturing to them "oh and guys, this is my buddy! He just goes by pal." He said sitting down next to him, to which he jumped in killers lap.
"He lost his family when he was a little guy, I found him in the woods alone, so I brought him here, and I check up on him from time to time! I bring him food in case he couldn't find any of his own. He's friends with a lot of the other froggits here but they're a bit more kiddish around new people." He finished
"Oh but I've gotta go pal! My parents need me to watch over their house for them." He said as pal seemed sad but understanding. And they continued.
Whilst they walked G chimed in, saying "wait this isn't your house either? This place is huge!" To which killer responded "well. It is and it isn't. Does my family own here? Yes, but I don't live in this building." He says as they leave into a large snowy forest.
"How is there even snow under a mountain? Or trees for that matter?" G asked, to which Killer chuckles, turns to G and says "Uh⌠magic? I haven't exactly looked deep into the ecology of this part of my place"
The snow crunches under their feet as they walk through the forest. "Apparently a lot of people used to live here but over time they just moved to the surface so I can kinda do whatever I want here" Killer said as he gestures to an abandoned town, one house covered in fairy lights "if you guys ever wanted to crash here, I have games set up in the one with the lights on it, it's even got a kitchen" he said as they continued.
G would love to play some games, but in the moment he was interested in seeing just how big Killers home is.
They kept walking until they came to a split in the road, where Killer explained "okay, so if we take the left path we go straight to my house, but if we go right we'll still get to my house it'll just be a bit."
"Sure, let's take the scenic route!" G and Hunter said in unison, "i've never been here before, and besides that way seems nice" Hunter finished.
"Heh, sure! I don't usually go the way through waterfall. So it'll be nice." He said as they continued.
The ground seemed black. the entire area drenched in a faint blue light from the ceiling. The place lived up to its name as it seemed like around every corner there was a waterfall. The bright blue water flowing under wooden bridges.
Occasionally they saw bright blue flowers that repeated what they said! The entire place almost seemed magical in and of itself.
As they walked they eventually wound up at a castle, golden in appearance.
"And this is my house!" Killer said turning around.
To which G's jaw metaphorically dropped, "we've been walking for three and a half hours and we just now get to your house AND ITS ANOTHER CASTLE?!?" he yelled as Killer laughed "yeah, most people just don't like living underground I guess" he said walking inside
"Huh, I guess Undyne isn't here today. She's technically our guard but she mostly just lives here" he said as he walked through a large hall. They went from hall to hall until they wound up at a specific hall. "Oh yeah! This is my bedroom!" Killer said as they continued onwards, however G asked
"Then what are these rooms for?" As he points to the two adjacent rooms.
"Oh! The one to the left is undynes room, and the one to the right-" killer said as he paused, his smiling face drifting to a neutral expression, as he continued "w-was my siblings room." He said as he stopped for a second before walking over and going inside.
The room was cold. Given this is all underground everything is cold, but this stands out. Just by looking around you can tell no-one's lived here a long time.
"Heh, they got this for their birthday" he said as he walked over and grabbed a small box, containing a knife.
"They used to love cooking with mom" he said as the tracks under his eyes began to tear up.
"But⌠that's all rightâŚ" he said as he closed the box and put it back. And for the first time in a while, his eye light was visible. "Let's go⌠ok?" he said walking away towards the hall. He closed the door and took a deep breath.
"Killer⌠if this was sensitive I didn't mean toâŚ" G said as killer turned around cheerily, and said "Gah, let's just forget about it!" As he waved his hand
His face was back to normal as if nothing happened. In surprise G stepped back a bit
"Y-yeah. Let's just keep going. Right G?" Hunter said, with some surprise in his voice.
"And this is the old throne room! We don't really have much of a reason for it, so we converted it into a mini indoor garden!" Killer said as they walked over.
"Woah! You should grab a board game so we can play it over here! The flowers smell so nice." G said as he sat down
"Oh yeah! Okay then, I'll be right back!" He said as he ran to the house in snowdin.
However on the way he realized the door to his siblings room was open, as he looked in he saw an ink beast, but this one seemed different, it had coattails and more fully formed boots.
"HEY! GET OUT OF THERE!" he yelled as he ran over, only to see it take the box, and as it ran towards snowdin, killer saw just how fast it was.
It was difficult for him to catch up, so he summoned his blaster and gave chase, flying over to him. And as the beast almost made it further, the exit was walled off. as killer summoned a wall of bones blocking the exit.
He then fired his blaster at the beast and it made a terrible shriek, however though it did hit the beast, it still stood. Although staggered. With the bones out of the way it returned to it's sprint.
"I won't LET YOU" Killer screamed as he tackled the beast, they both tumbled towards a wall. The beast stopped tumbling earlier however the knife flew out of its pocket. Killer rolled into the wall, landing upside down, and the knife flew out of its case and flew right above Killers feet.
He righted himself and stood up to grab the knife but as he grabbed it, everything went dark, and in a blink he saw his sibling. "Ch-Chara?" He whispered, beginning to cry.
"H-Hey Bro! It's been a while⌠it's been lonely here." They said hugging him
"Wait am I⌠dead?" Killer asked sadly, "n-no⌠I can't be-" he continued, before he was interrupted
"Nonono your not dead, when I died I was able to possess the knife! You're not dead, but this doesn't entirely pause time so if you're too slow you will be!" They explained
"I can talk to you! Since you grabbed the knife now I can follow you around and talk to you" they said "I can help! My DETERMINATION clings to this blade! And I can use that to use magic!" They finished
"I⌠don't care. Can I just stay here?.. with you? I've missed being able to talk to you" Killer pleaded hugging them tighter
"Heh, no. I can't let you die here. Live for the both of us" they said
"I don't know if I can⌠I've been holding myself together⌠but not thinking about something isn't dealing with it" he spoke, crying
"I can bring you back here later, but you can't give up now!... After all, you've always been filledâŚ. With DETERMINATION" they said squeezing him closer as they faded and Killer awoke to have the knife in his hand.
As he brought himself back together, he saw the beast jump at him, and in that moment, he backflipped onto the wall above himself, and jumped off landing on the other side of the hallway.
"I. Am Prince Killer Dreemurr. And this, is MY. HOUSE." He said as his right eye turned red, and he slashed the knife at the beast, creating a wave of pure determination. Cutting the beast in half.
And as it's upper half fell back and looked up at him, only the see dozens of knives all pointing at him. "Begone from my timeline." They said as one by one every knife impaled the beast and once it was done, he fired a laser from the tip of the knife, eviscerating whatever was left. As G and Hunter walked by
"We were just gonna ask what was taking so long but I guess we got our awnser" Hunter spoke as G interrupted; "WHAT HAPPENED?!?!" G screamed in confusion, dropping a bowl of popcorn he made.
"I-... Does Grillby's deliver here?" Killer asked as he turned around.
"We can go get some if you want to!" Hunter suggested.
"Yeah⌠seems like you need it" G interjected.
And as they all reached the throne room they saw Asgore and Toriel walk in.
"Wait, there was a door RIGHT HERE and we fell down the giant hole in the mountain?!?" G inquired, as Toriel laughed, and said
"Oh! Killer, I didn't know you were bringing company!" As killer gasped and said
"Mom?!? Dad!?! Why are you here? I thought you were going on a vacation!" He said wiping tears from his cheeks
"Oh, we had to change plans because we forgot to pack everything we needed." Asgore said, as Toriel chuckled and replied
"oh, no. You forgot to pack your blanket and had a panic attack in the airport parking lot."
Asgore seemed to blush, and say "hey, hotel blankets aren't as soft and- oh, I- ugh, Killer we know what happened. Everything's okayâŚ" as he leaned down and Killer hugged him, and after a short while Toriel joined. And then the others did as well.
They went to get dinner and relax. Killer proceeded to stay with Chara in the realm for four hours before going to bed.

Ch. 1 - Your New Bodyguard
You were incredibly bored.
Being one of the many daughters of a high ranking lord, you could teach a class on how to zone in and out of bureaucratic meetings, but todayâs affair was testing your time-honed skills. Your father had insisted you sit in on the arduous selection process for your new bodyguard. The stringy clouds did little to beat back the sunâs rays, and three yawns had already been crammed into your palm in the past thirty minutes.
âWeâre here for you, my dear. Please sit up.â He chastised, sternly clicking his tongue at your slouched posture.
You straightened your back, but sent him a pointed glare with the aim of boring a hole into his head.
âDonât give me that look. Iâm not the one who was nearly kidnapped last week.â
You reluctantly bowed your head, tracing the grooves of your palm with a fingernail. Of course, he was right. Due to his status, there had been a failed attempt to snatch you from one of the handmaidens when you accompanied her to shop for vegetables in the market. Fortunately, you had been next to a knife stall and clawed at its surface in time to find hope around one of the sharp pieces of merchandise. In a flash, you sank metal far enough into the attackerâs back to force him to howl in pain and collapse. However, after the man was taken into custody by the local citizen police, they had contacted your father and you had not stepped foot outside of his land until you were summoned to sit in the sun and sift through potential bodyguards. You had insisted you were fine despite being shaken up, but your father had furrowed his brow the way he always did when he was cross and that was the end of that. You knew your father cared, but watching him question lines of burly men as they made pledges of loyalty in the courtyard wasnât exactly your favorite way to spend the afternoon.
Every time a new man stepped forward and listed his qualifications, your father would look to you before dismissing the candidate at any frown or tenseness that overtook your face from their pitch.
âMy name isâŚâ You drowned out the introduction as you watched a yellow butterfly flit across the stone walkways.
âWhat do you think, my dear?âÂ
Your eyes snapped back to the man, and you could see his gaze indiscreetly drift to your kimono skirts. He licked his chapped lips, and a bitter taste prickled the back of your tongue.
âNo.â
Your father nodded, âYou may go.â
âThatâs too bad. If you need a husband though, let me know.â
Cold washed over you as you tugged your robes closer and angled your legs towards your father. You were the only unmarried sibling, and the whole village never seemed to stop talking about it. It was through no lack of suitors, though you just couldnât bring yourself to like any of them. Your family blamed it on how your father spoiled you, but he continued to indulge you all the same. You were the youngest and most headstrong, like him, so he was protective of you.Â
âYou may go.â He ordered more forcefully, tapping his foot.
You sighed, trying to catch sight of the gold-toned butterfly again as the last interviewee took their much appreciated leave.
You sensed your father was growing weary as well, echoing your sigh and pinching the bridge of his nose in your peripheral vision.
âNext.â
âHey, Iâm here for the bodyguard job.â
A murmur rippled through the remaining men, and you heard a few distinct grumbles and sneers.
âItâs him.â
âHe does know this is a bodyguard position, right?â
âWhatâs he doing here?â
âWhatâs with his arm?â
âForget about the arm, look at his rib.â
You turned your head back curiously, and your gaze was instantly met by a tall, muscular man with slicked dark hair and a scar slashed into the side of his mouth.
His forest green eyes bore into yours, and you swallowed upon realizing he indeed had an arm missing. His kamishimo and kimono were black and draped around his shoulders, with one side tucked over his chest and into his pants. The heavily scarred skin on his side was exposed, but he had bandages wrapped around the portion of his arm and shoulder that remained. Two swords were slung along the right side of his waist, and he didnât seem bothered by the whispers surrounding his mangled flesh. You wondered what he had to endure to survive such a gruesome injury.
âWhat is your name?âÂ
âFushiguro Toji.â Another wave of murmurs.
âFushiguro Toji, the mercenary?â
âThatâs correct.â
âWhy would you like to be a bodyguard for my daughter?â Your father leaned forward in his seat, a twinkle in his eye.
âI could use the money.â Toji shrugged, cracking his neck and rolling his shoulders back. Even through those miniscule movements, his dense muscles rippled with power. He emanated a confident aura, and you felt your heart pound from his handsomely carved features.
âHow honest.â Your father seemed entertained.
âSend him home already. Thereâs no way he can do the job.â Someone in line yelled.
More shouts of dissent were made, and the head guard came to your fatherâs side.
âMy lord, perhaps theyâre right.âÂ
In a flash, Toji had his sword wielded and it clashed with the head guardâs swift defense.Â
âPerhaps theyâre full of shit.âÂ
You jumped at the sudden conflict, and the two men began fighting in earnest. They moved quickly, yet every step and dodge held a smooth grace. You observed in utter amazement as metal sliced against metal, and grunts of effort left the two swordsmen. They exchanged skillful blows, until Toji was able to disarm the head guard and point the tip of his sword at his opponentâs throat. Only mere seconds had passed.
Toji sent a firm stare back to your father, âSatisfied?â
Your father warily glanced at you, and you gave him a wide smile.
âYes. Youâre hired.â
_________________
Although Toji had initially impressed you, you quickly realized how infuriating of a person he was. He was rather crass, and he had bouts of strictness that bothered you when you wanted to deviate from your fatherâs schedule and leave the house. Even when you reminded him you were technically his boss, he would give you a cold look and tell you that there was 'no way in hell you were going anywhere'. He was under the impression that he had to follow your fatherâs instructions to the letter, and that if your rebelliousness made him lose a single cent, there would be hell to pay. He also had a tendency for sarcasm, which he used on you constantly.
âHey princess, whatâs the schedule for today? That's right, sitting your ass at home.â
âYouâre gonna break something trying to get past me, doll. Relax.â
âAre you done? No, but we can talk a walk around the estate if youâd like. Oh, so you can shut up.â
âYouâre right, princess. The world is ending and itâs all my fault for doing my job.â
To be fair, you were sure he resented your stubborn and constant need to go explore and discuss your unhappy thoughts at length with him. It had only been a few weeks since he had started his bodyguard duties, but you were already growing sick of each other.
âYou know you donât have to stand out there, Iâll be a while.â You called out, sighing as you sank into your hot bath.
You could vaguely make out Tojiâs side profile in the brown paper of the door that separated you both.
âNot a chance. People are most vulnerable in the bath.â
âThatâs perverted.â You cupped water to stream over your face.
âJust a fact, doll.â
âWould you stop calling me that?â
âWhy? Itâs fitting.â The grin in his voice was apparent.
âYouâre only here because of my fatherâs insane need to keep an eye on me, donât be clever.â You rolled your eyes, smoothing your hands over your arms and watching the steam rise off of the surface of the water.
âIâm here because youâre a fragile, hard headed idiot who never stops to think about the consequences of her position.â
âFragile?â You smacked your hands down into the water.
âYeah, could break you in half if I wanted to. Youâre weak.â
Water aggressively splashed the stones lining your tub as you stood up and slammed the door open to Tojiâs surprised expression. Steam leaked from the doorway and around your bare figure, and droplets of water cascaded down your face and body as he took in the unbridled fury in your eyes.
âIâm not weak, and you donât scare me. No man ever will. Ask the man I stabbed.â
He only stared down at you, and you pointedly maintained your stare up into his eyes. You hardly breathed, even as the chill of the hallway made its way up your naked form. Shallow puddles dripped at your feet, and the sounds of each drop echoed around you.
Toji looked away first, storming off down the hall and leaving you in silence.
You triumphantly shut the door, returning to your bath with a content sigh.
Once you got dressed and made your way back to your room, you noticed Toji had stationed himself in front of your bedroom door.
You primly walked past him, searching for the doorâs handle with your fingertips. He didnât even spare you a glance, keeping his eyes on the opposite wall.
âGood to see you dressed.âÂ
âGood to see you can talk again.â You returned.
A pause fell over you both, and you pushed aside the door to step inside. Just as you set your foot past the threshold, Toji made another comment.
âYour birthmark is really cute.â
Heat immediately rushed up the back of your neck, and you scrambled into your room to hurriedly shut the door. You could see the silhouette of your bodyguard trembling with laughter.
âGoodnight, princess.â He chuckled, the deep rumble of his voice permeating the door.
âGoodnight!â You indignantly yelled back, covering your head with your blanket before tossing it off and lifting your robes to see which birthmark he was referring to.
You searched your body in the dark, laying back with a sigh when you found it too dim to see anything.
Maybe he was right, you never really thought about the consequences.
_________________
The next morning, you could see the outline of Toji still outside your door.
You tentatively slid it open, resting your hand along the door.
âGood morning.â
âGood morning.â He greeted, expression calm.
You hovered in the doorway momentarily, âLetâs never speak of what you witnessed last night.â
âWhatâs in it for me? Besides not being killed, which I believe you can do now.â Toji teased, an amused edge to his voice.
âToji.â Your eyes flashed with warning.
He reeled back at your serious look, âSure, but no guarantees I wonât think about it.â
You embarrassedly hit his chest, and he threw his head back with a loud laugh.
âDonât call me âdollâ anymore either. Itâs insulting to be called weak all the time. At least âprincessâ is tolerable.â
âI never said thatâs why I call you âdollâ, did I?â He cocked his head, the remnants of his laughter playing across his lips in a sly smile.
âWhat are you talking about?âÂ
âItâs âcause youâre pretty. Like a doll.â He raised his hand to grip the door frame directly above you, his voice lowering as he regarded you with a smirk.
âCanât be mad at that, right?â
Your cheeks inflamed immediately at the compliment, and you pushed past him.
âStop joking around.â
He was right though, you couldnât be mad about that.

Burnt Skies (Rick Flag x Fem!Reader)
@h-hxgirlâ
Requested by Anon: Saw this captain boomerang fanfic where he finds she's pregnant while they're on mission, I was wondering if you could maybe do something similar for Rick
Author's Note: He would be so protective of the reader fr fr, also this is gonna be angst angst angst so just beware
Warning: Death, pregnancy, language, blood, major character death, spoilers
âHey (Y/N), you ready to go?â Rickâs voice echoed through the room before he halted, seeing you on the floor, head in the toilet.
âYeah, give me a minute,â you replied weakly, wiping your mouth with the back of your hand and flushing the toilet.
âAre you sure? Are you feeling alright?â He asked, rubbing your back as you looked up at him with a small smile.
âYeah, Iâll be fine. Iâll meet you there,â nodding his head, he walked out the door with guns strapped to his body on his tac vest. Looking at your reflection, you noticed a slight greenish tint to your face. Ignoring the wave of nausea, you made your way out of the base and to the plane. Walking up the ramp, you took a seat next to Rick who looked at you with concern in his brown eyes.
âBaby, maybe you should sit this one out. You arenât looking too hot,â he whispered in your ear as you brushed the notion off. After all, you did have a really bad gut feeling about this mission.
âIâm here. Iâm going,â you stated firmly as he looked you over one more time before shrugging his shoulders, knowing it was of no use to argue with you.
----------
The plane ride was hell. With the criminals being loud and Harleyâs non stop chatter accompanying your periodic bouts of nausea, you were ready to get the hell off of the plane and right into combat.
âAlright guy, get ready to drop,â Rick shouted as the cargo door opened to reveal water beneath you. Once he gave the signal, you jumped into the cool water and began to swim your way to the mainland, waiting for the rest of the team to catch up to you. After everyone, save for the Weasel, had made it to the shore, you glanced over to your boyfriend who was laying next to Harley.
âHey guys, itâs me. Iâm the guy who called you and I brought my friends,â Blackguard shouted into the open, raising his hands while ignoring the shouts coming from the rest of the team and your boyfriend, Wallerâs distant cursing ringing in your ear. Next thing you know, there was gunfire in every direction and things went to chaos. You quickly sought shelter behind a rock and shot off a few rounds into the woods, hoping to take down some of the Corto Maltese soldiers. â(Y/N), watch out,â Rick shouted at you as you turned to see what he was talking about, but it was too late before a large piece of debris from one of the trees knocked you out cold.
You woke up to machines attached to your body. Feeling the bile rise in your throat, you tried to get out of the restraints and look for a place to dump the contents of your stomach. Suddenly a pan was placed in front of you and that was all you needed to release the bile. Groaning at the light, you looked around the room and was surprised to see a cleanish room which plenty of nurses occupied.
âAh good, youâre awake,â a voice commented as a rough hand pulled your head back, forcing you to look up at one of the generals you were tasked to take out.
âWhat the hell are you doing to me?â You asked, squirming your body against the bed, trying to loosen some of the restraints.
âMi amore, we are treating you. Seems you have caught a parasite,â he replied before summoning the nurse over to you, carrying a plate of food and some juice, âyouâre government must really be struggling if theyâre sending pregnant women into the field,â he mentioned as your blood ran cold.
âThatâs impossible,â muttering to yourself, your head went fuzzy at the concept of you being pregnant. With Rickâs kid.
âOn the contrary, when we brought in your friend and you, we noticed certain things,â motioning down to your stomach only brought awareness to the fact that you were practically naked in a room full of the enemy.
âLet me go,â you pleaded, pulling your arms as much as you could.
âI think not,â he replied before nodding to one of the nurses who moved to turn on a machine and attach it to your head. Screams of agony soon left your lips, blocking out the sudden spurts of gunfire in the halls.
----------
Harley laughed maniacally as she gunned down multiple soldiers, enjoying the way they were dropping to the floor. She needed to get out of there. She needed to find the others. After the last one dropped to the floor, she moved toward the door before hearing a piercing scream echo down the hallway.
âSounds like someoneâs having fun,â she ran her tongue against her teeth before skipping toward the scream. Slamming open the door, she raised the guns in her hand, ready to fire, until she saw you laying on the table surrounded by nurses.
âNo one messes with Flagâs girl,â she muttered to herself before unloading the magazine in the room. All of the nurses slinked to the ground, covered in a pool of their own blood. Rushing over to you, Harley unstrapped the restraints and head piece before taking out the IV and looked for your clothes.
âWhere the hell are ya clothes?â She asked, searching high and low before she found a bag filled with your bloody uniform. Helping you sit up, she noted the way you looked super frail but practically glowing at the same time.
âHarley,â you whispered out to her before passing out on her shoulder. âAwww, this would be really cute if not for the circumstances,â she stated out loud to herself, peering out of the window and seeing a guy in a helmet run across the street with Flag. Wait a minute, Flag! Running out the door, she ran around the corner before stopping in front of the two men.
âHiya guys! Whatâs up?â
âWeâre here to save you, is (Y/N) with you?â Rick asked with hope in his voice as Harley nodded, wrapping pale fingers around his wrist and dragging him back inside and through the pile of bodies she had claimed. At the sight of you, Rick ran to your side and hugged your limp body.
âWhatâs wrong with her?â He asked, fighting the tears that were beginning to surface.
âDonât worry puddinâ, sheâs just asleep,â shrugging her shoulders, she left the room as you stirred, fluttering your eyes open.
âRick?â You questioned as he rapidly nodded his head, placing kisses all along your face.
âThank God youâre ok. I thought I lost you.â
âRick, the doctors found something,â memories of the conversation you had moments ago replayed in your brain. Youâre pregnant.
âIâm pregnant,â you whispered, mind still not comprehending the fact that you were pregnant. After all, you had been infertile most of your life. Avoiding his gaze, you waited for his response.
âHow?â
âI donât know.â
âIâm going to be a dad,â he whispered, causing your head to snap up and see a smile play against his face.
âYou want this? I donât know if itâll carry to term. You know that Iâm infertile.â Placing his lips against yours, he pulled you into his arms, hugging you as close as he could to his body. Wrapping your arms around his neck, you kissed back before a throat clearing interrupted you.
âThis is sweet and all, but we have a fucking monster to kill,â DuBois stated as you looked up at Rick who smiled.
âStay here, Iâll come back and get you.â
âIâm not leaving your side,â you replied as he sighed and ran a hand through his hair.
âYouâre pregnant. No way in living hell am I gonna allow you to do this. Youâll stay here and thatâs an order,â you and he both hated when he had to pull his rank, but you realized it was necessary in cases like this.
âJust come back to me,â pulling his lips down against yours for what feels like the last time, you encoded this moment into your brain, remembering the way he tasted.
âFor you? Always.â
----------
He shouldâve known you were going to follow them into Jotunheim. Not only were you stubborn, but you still had that nagging feeling that something was going to happen. Sneaking past the military, you found a window and busted it open with your elbow before entering the building. Landing with a soft thud, you looked around the room and noticed Peacemaker going down a dark tunnel. Running after him, you made sure to stay hidden by the numerous pillars. Peering around the corner, you saw Ratcatcher standing next to Rick, however Peacemaker was pointing a gun at Rick.
âNobody is saying what they did was right,â Peacemaker stated, hand unwavering.
âThey experimented on children!â Rick yelled as more explosions went off in the distance.
âThat information gets out and it causes an international incident. Keeping the peace is worth any price, including the life of a hero like yours, sir, so please. Donât make me do this,â your stomach churned. You knew that Captain America wannabe was no good, and now your love might just pay the price. Suddenly, rocks collapsed all around you, obscuring your view of Rick and Peacemaker.
âNo,â you whispered to yourself, picking up rocks and trying to make a hole for you to get your body through. Your efforts became faster the more you heard the two men grunting. After successfully digging a hole big enough for you, you crawled through as you heard something like porcelain shatter and choking.
âYou mother fucker,â Rick stated through gritted teeth as you watched in slow motion, Peacemakerâs hand grasping a large shard.
âRick!â You shouted out before tackling him off Christopherâs body, not getting out of the way soon enough as Peacemaker lodged the porcelain into your lower abdomen. âNo!â Rick shouted as Peacemaker threw you off. In the distance somewhere, you heard a gun go off before hands wrapped around your body. â(Y/N)? (Y/N)?â Rick called to you but you couldnât hear him, your mind venturing off.
----------
The sun lit your face through the blinds, dancing in your eyes and creating a multitude of hues, a warm body pressed against you.
âMorning sweetheart,â voice deep from slumber, Rick rubbed his eyes as he let out a yawn. Stretching in bed before your 5 year old daughter came running into the room.
âMommy, daddy. Itâs Christmas!â She squealed excitedly, waking up the baby that was next door.
âYeah it is baby, you excited for your presents?â You asked as she rapidly nodded while Rick slid out of the bed.
âIâll go grab little Digger,â he commented, kissing your forehead and your daughterâs head. Getting up, you went to grab a coffee before the doorbell rang. Moving to open it, you saw Harleyâs painted face waiting for you with Nanaue, Cleo, Robert and Abner carrying presents.
âMerry Christmas dollface,â she exclaimed, pulling you in for a hug before running off to see her god daughter.
âCome in guys,â you motioned for them to enter as Rick rounded the corner, your 10 month old in his arms.
âSo this is the little guy, huh?â Cleo asked as Sebastian waved a hand at the newborn, earning giggles from the baby.
âYep, Digger Anthony Flag, meet your family,â Rick lifted up the babyâs arm, making him wave to everyone.
âIâm proud of you guys,â Robert commented, slapping a hand on Rickâs back as everyone shuffled into the living room, Nanaue taking up most of the space.
âThanks man, it wouldn't have happened without you.â
âAlright, everyone ready for presents?â You asked the room with Harley by your side, Harleen in her arms. Rick placed Digger in Cleoâs arms before walking up to you and bringing you into his side.
âI love you, Mrs. Flag.â
âAnd I you, Mr. Flag.â
----------
Groaning, you felt an excruciating pain in your abdomen and a feeling of loss?
â(Y/N), baby, youâre awake,â his tired voice resonated in your ear as he leaned down to kiss your forehead, his hand not leaving yours.
âI feel like I got hit by a truck,â you commented as he sniffled, trying to suppress the tears that threatened to escape.
âYou shouldnât have done that,â he noted, petting your hair and placing another kiss on your forehead.
âAnd leave our kid without a father? I donât think...â, realization dawned on you at that moment. The sudden feeling of loss and the pain in that general area washed over you as you began crying. âOh God, the baby is gone, isnât it?â You asked through tears as he let a couple slip down his face, nodding and trying to smile through the pain. Choking back a sob, you turned your face away from him as tears continued to fall.
âHey, look at me,â he whispered, squeezing your hand. Shaking your head, you refused to meet his hazel eyes, â(Y/N), look at me.â Turning your head, your eyes locked onto his as he continued to smooth down your hair.
âWeâre alive. Weâre both alive. Thatâs all that matters,â he replied, crawling into the hospital bed with you and pulling you against his chest as you cried into his shirt.
âWhat if I never get pregnant again?â
âWe will. Iâll make sure of it. Iâm done with the fucking task force. Waller can find someone else to puppet. But Iâm done. Youâre done. Weâre gonna get married and have a nice house. Iâll get a new job and weâll figure it out. I promise.â Kissing the top of your head, he wrapped his arms around you as you calmed down.
âI love you,â you whispered against his chest as he hugged you closer.
âI love you too, sweetheart.â
Authorâs Note: Well this was way longer than I intended it to be. But hope you enjoy!!

A/N: This is only personal interpretation of a story not yet fully told or confirmed and wishful thinking. This is in no way canon and also probably out of character!
"Ashes of the Sun"
A beast rumored to be unmatched in strength,
the killer of the thousands that tried to slay her, one that the citizens of the many empires entrusted their leaders to end her reign,
lay lifeless on the ground, her tail wrapped around the opened gateway to head back to their realm.
Among themselves, the leaders guessed that the absent Jester King, Scott, had killed her before any of them could. It was likely of the clown, the collector of mysterious items he found to be interesting.
However, few of them had their doubts. Fwhip already told them that Scott didn't go to the portal, and the king had been wood gathering with his lumberjacks in the Netherworld. Sausage, Pix, Gem, and Shubble, on the other hand, felt that there was someone else in this realm. It was more of a feeling that they passed through, and they were there no longer.
"You know, it smells of the sun." The Sun princess, Gem, herself mentions to the aforementioned group. "It smells like an old friend."
"Really, your higness?" Shubble crossed her arms and chewed on her thumb's fingernail. "Feels like pyro magic to me, it could be a witch who mastered fire to fight against fire!"
Sausage faced their historian, Pix, and gave him a smile before speaking. "Why, we have an old friend right here! Did you slay the dragon?- We should call on a celebration if you did!"
Pix laughed. "Let's not get too hasty here, I didn't kill her! Like Ms. Shubble said, it could've been a crimson witch, or someone else that we know." Within his palms and as most of the other leaders left, he summoned a thick leather-bound book. He flipped through it's pages in quick succession. "Your radiant highness, is there anyone that comes to mind who could slay a dragon?"
Humming, the princess thought ofs and thought ifs, she clicked her tongue everytime she failed to connect dots. After many tries, ger eyes flapped open and filled with joy. "The Damsel of the Stars!"
Shrub's face was filled with disappointment, Pix kept a smile on his face and shook in his boots, and Sausage looked dumbfounded.
"...What?"
"Are you serious?" Shubble threw up her arms. "That fairytale character?"
Gem noble-y whacked the witch with her noble staff. "How disrespectful to your princess!"
"Wait, sorry, I've never heard of this fairytale." Sausage piped up. "Sounds interesting- what's it about?"
Like the true princess of the sun, she beamed. "The Damsel of the Stars, also known as Luminescent, is a warrior who protected the empires and saved people! I've heard she had a male counterpart, but he feels a lot weaker than her. How pitiful! You've never read her beautiful story!"
Luminescent? That sounded awfully familiar and wrong to Sausage.
"But yeah-" Shubble sighed. "She's not real, she couldn't have killed the dragon."
"Correction, it's possible." All eyes turned towards their speaker, Pix. "Not Luminescent, but her inspiration. I've seen from old scripts that there was an empress named similar to 'Luminescent'." In order to confirm, he flipped through his thick book. "They say a warrior's spirit fights on. It says here that the empress was engulfed in the flames of a dragon." Some papers started falling out, so he gathered them and closed the book for good. "It would be poetic if the warrior slain by the dragon got her revenge on it."
"WHA---T?" Gem whined before Sausage could speak. "But- But Luminescent would never take revenge on her foes! She valiantly dealt with them lest they had to be executed!"
"I never liked that story, had weird morals." Shubble's comment got Gem to tackle her.
...
It did slightly feel like a warrior of the stars was around the dimension of the end. A sunflower beside his feet caught sausage's eye. By the looks of it, it seemed to be dying because some of the stamen were white in the shape of a crescent. He picked it up slowly and lightly, it would be a sin to the Sun Princess if he were to kill it.
It was like the flower smiled at him, he'll take care of this big guy.
"Hey, we should get out of here! We have kingdoms to run!" Sausage said in a sing-song tune.
The witch protested, but the sun princess turned deaf to it, throwing her into the portal and following short after.
"Guardian, let's continue to discuss things in my savannah." Pix told him before departing as well.
Sausage nodded, following with the sunflower, his new friend, in his arms.

Mizpah // the darkling x f!reader // ch 3
summary: After finally meeting the darkling, the two of you have a one on one conversation. It seems like Mal and Alina also have one. An offer is made to you, one that you could simply not deny
A/N: Please read this before continuing-- From here on, the rest of the fic will most likely be following the book series instead of the show. However there will be some aspects of the show woven in! Also I know the beginning of this chapter doesnât line up with what happened in ch 2 but its whatever. for the sake of the story, the timeline is going to be dragged out for as long as possible <3Â
I also made a playlist, give it a look :))
As Mal walks with the guard towards the room the General had directed for him to wait in, he hears his name being called out. His heart pounds at the sound of Alinaâs familiar voice. He turned around, her face being split by a giant smile. Alina runs toward him, engulfing him in a hug, her arms around his neck.
âWhatâre you doing here?â She asked
âHell if I know.â Mal said with a weariness that Alina hadnât expected. âI had a report to make to your master.â
âMy what?â There was confusion on her face before a grin took its place. âYou and y/n were the ones who found Morozovaâs herd. I shouldâve known, the two best trackers in all of Ravka.â Alina knew something was off. Mal couldnât bear to look her in the eyes, where had all the excitement he had felt earlier gone?
âI should go.â
âWhat do you mean? You just got here.â The sun summoner could feel something topple over in her, all of the anger and embarrassment that she had built up. All the letters she had sent, but never gotten a reply to. All the times she had hoped Mal would come and find her, yet when he finally did, he was just going to leave again. âYou know what, sorry. I didnât realize I was wasting your time.â She sneered, the love in her eyes now replaced with animosity.
âI didnât say that.â He argued.
âNo, no, I understand. You canât be bothered to answer my letters. Why would you want to stand here talking to me, while y/n is waiting saints knows where.â Malâs mood shifted into one of confusion.
âI didnât get any letters.â He whispered.
âYeah right.â She replied angrily. Mal sighed, rubbing a hand over his face.
âWe have to move constantly to track the herd. My unit is barely in contact with the regiment anymore.â Mal was tired of arguing with Alina. He had come to see one of his bestest friends, he didnât expect for it to end like this.
Alina hesitates for a second to look at Mal, noticing how much he has changed since she was taken from the Darklings tent. He was no longer the Mal she knew, something had happened to him since the months she had been gone. His eyes were colder, his posture was one of somebody who was always on alert.
âYou didnât get any of my letters?â She uttered, feeling the ends of her heart fraying. He shook his head, she could tell his mind was elsewhere now, a distant look in his expression.
âMal, I..â She hesitated. âCanât you stay a little while longer?â She pleaded. She hated the fact that she had to do so just to spend time with him. âYou canât imagine what itâs been like here.â He lets out a laugh, one riddled with sarcasm.
âI donât need to imagine. I saw your little demonstration in the ballroom. Very impressive.â He sneered.
âYou saw me?â
âYes, both y/n and I got a glimpse of you.â He paused, trying to search for the right words. âDo you know how worried Iâve been about you? How worried we were? Y/n was stationed near the southern borders and when she came looking for us she was so worried. She didnât know what happened to you and neither did I. I couldnât tell her the truth because I had no what theyâd done to you! We had no way to reach you. Did you know that there were rumors that you were being tortured?â The words left his mouth in a quivering mess. âWhen we had heard of the opportunity to see you once more, we took it. We did it for you, Alina.â
âReally?â She tried to believe Mal, why would he come looking for her when he could be with anyone else. After all of these years, she had become so used to his indifference.
âYes.â He hissed. âAnd here you are, safe and sound. Dancing and flirting like some cosseted little princess-â
âDonât sound so disappointed.â She snapped. âIâm sure the Darkling can arrange for a rack or some hot coals if that would make you feel betterâ Mal scowled and stepped away from her. She couldnât believe that they were fighting. Alina lays her hand on one of his arms and feels it tense below her, yet he doesnât pull away.
âMal, I canât help the way things are here. I didnât ask for any of this!â He looks at her and then looks away, some of the tension leaving his body.
âI know you didnât.â The weariness in his voice came back, making Alina remove her hand from his arm. âWhat happened to you Mal?â She whispered. Mal chose to say nothing, staring into the darkness of the hall. She lays her hand on his cheek, feeling the stubble on her palm. She turns his face until his eyes meet hers.
âI canâtâŚâ She lets her fingertips wander to the scar on his jaw.
âGenya can fix this, she can..â She knows she said the wrong thing when Mal takes a step back.
âI donât need fixingâ He snapped. Snatching Alinaâs hand from where it had just been seconds before.
âI didnât mean..â
âAre you happy here, Alina?â The question took her by surprise.
âI donât know⌠sometimesâŚâ
âAre you happy here? With him?â Alina didnât have to ask who Mal meant. She didnât know what to say.
âYou're wearing his symbol. His colors.â He observed, his eyes glancing at the gold charm hanging on her neck.
âTheyâre just clothes.â She tried to convince him, quite possibly herself too.
âYou and I both know that theyâre more than just clothes.â
âWhat difference does it make what I wear?â
âThe clothes, the jewels.â He spat. âEven the way you look. Heâs all over you!â The words hit her like a slap. She takes her hand from his tight embrace and crosses it over her chest.
âItâs not like that.â She said, avoiding his gaze. Mal could see right through her, he could see the flush that had started to form when he had mentioned the Darkling.
âI saw how he looked at you Alina!â
âI like how he looks at me!â She shouted, a malicious smile forming on Malâs face.
âJust admit it,â He sneered. âHe owns you.â
âHe owns you too, Mal.â She bit back. âHe owns us all.â The smile falling from his face.
âNo, he doesnât.â He said fiercely. âNot me. Not y/n. Not ever.â
âOh really? Donât you have someplace to be? Donât you have orders to follow?â Mal stands up straight, his face cold and devoid of any emotions.
âYes, I did. My orders were to wait for you to be taken to me. But I think I found what Iâve been looking for.â He turned sharply and walked out, leaving Alina to her thoughts. She finally lets the tears fall down her cheeks, her body coursing with anger and heartbreak. For months she had dreamt of the day where she would be able to see Mal again. She had spent her whole lifetime chasing after him, but she knew now it was time to let him go.
-
THE DARKLING walks closer to you, while you stay propped up next to the door. You fidget with your hair, moving it to one side as he inches closer and closer until he is a few feet away from you. You anticipated his next moves, he brings his hand to you neck and strokes it.
âYour bleeding.â It seems like Genya had nicked you after all. âHere, let me.â He offered, taking a cloth from his pocket and gently wiping the small amount of blood away. His other hand resting at the nape of your neck for stability. You watched his eyes as he concentrated on his actions. You prayed to the saints that he couldnât hear the incredibly fast pace your heart was beating at.
âSo, what did you need to speak to me about.â You questioned. Deeming his work satisfactory, he takes a step back. Tucking the bloodied cloth back into his kefta.
âHave you eaten yet?â He asked.
âWhat?â Some of the excitement inside of you had deflated.
âIt mustâve been a long ride from Kribirsk, Iâm sure you're starving.â He calls out for one of the oprichniki outside of his doors and orders them to bring dinner for the two of us.
âI appreciate the gesture, sir. But surely thatâs not why you wanted me to stay behind.â
âNo, youâre right. Take a seat.â He points to a smaller table, one that hadnât been occupied by maps and war strategies. It was a rectangular table, both seats facing the window that had shown the view of the lake. You walked towards the table and took a seat. The moonlight glimmered off of the lake, making you smile. He places a lantern in the middle of the table, assuring that you were not going to eat in the dark. In one swift motion, he sits right next to you, his body angled towards yours. âHow do you know Alina?â
âWe grew up together.â He looked at you, pressing for more details. âIn an orphanage in Keramzin.â You were interrupted by a knock, the food had finally arrived. You didnât realize how hungry you were until the smell of roasted lamb had made your mouth water. âIs that roasted lamb? Itâs my favorite!â The Darkling shot you a smile, motioning for you to dig in.
âI was alone until Alina and Mal had come in.â You said between bites. âI never knew my parents. Ana Kuya said I had just turned up one day on the doorsteps, wrapped in nothing but a blanket. I used to get bullied, but when they showed up, they started picking on Mal too. Alina, being the great person she is, defended us both.â A smile made its way onto your lips as you reminisced about your youth. âFrom then, the three of us were like peas in a pod. We were never seen without each other. That was until we joined the First Army. Alina and Mal had been stationed near Kribirsk while I was down south in Caryeva. We rarely got to see each other.â The Darkling watched as you shoveled the food into your mouth. His hands clasped together, resting on his lap as he listened intently.
âAre you not going to eat?â You pointed the knife in your hand at his plate.
âNo, itâs for you.â He replied, pushing the plate closer to you. You squinted your eyes, bewildered by the movement.
âWhat do you want from me?â The words had left your mouth before you could think, âSorry, I..â Truly, what would the darkling want from someone like me? Someone who wasnât like him. You thought to yourself.
âStay. I want you to stay at the palace.â He announced, his request shocking you to the core. â..Alina needs a friend here, someone she knows and is familiar with. Someone she is comfortable around.â
âWhat about Mal?â You set down the fork and knife, forgetting about the food.
âHe is welcome to stay too.â A quiet and hesitant knock is heard after he finishes speaking. He calls out for the person, allowing them to enter. âAh, Alina. We were just talking about you.â He motions for her to come to the table.
She gingerly walks over to you, her arms crossed over her chest. âWhat about me?â She asked.
âIâve invited our friend here, y/n, to stay at the palace. Your friend, Mal, may stay too.â
âHe wonât be staying here.â She sniffled, a sarcastic laugh leaving her lips.
âWhat? Why?â You inquired.
âHe left.â She explained. You knew she was leaving out some details. Just mere hours ago, Mal had been ecstatic to see her again. Yet now he was gone? Something wasnât adding up. Youâd pester her later about it when you werenât in the presence of the Darkling.
âMy offer to you still stands, y/n. You may stay, granted that you take residence in this hall.â Alina tried to hide her shock, no one had ever stayed in the Darklingâs hall. He had it all to himself. She didnât even know there were other rooms near his. âIf you are to stay here at the Little Palace as a guest, then Iâll need to be able to keep an eye on you just in case something happens.â
You give yourself some time to decide. You had duties to attend to, you and Mal had to track the stag. However, given that the two of you had pinpointed itâs location, there wasnât much left to do. What the Darkling was offering you had been everything youâd dreamt of. If you stayed you wouldnât have to wait days just to bathe. You wouldnât have to starve anymore.
âHow long would I stay?â
âFor as long as Alina likes.â He said. You turned to Alina, asking if this had been the right choice for you. She gives you an eager nod.
âFine. Iâll stay for Alina.â You look at her again, taking note of the color of her kefta. She was wearing his colors, which could possibly mean one thing. âAre you two together?â Alinaâs eyes widen with humility while the Darkling lets out a brief laugh.
âSorry for her behaviour. She just doesnât know how to shut her trap.â She moved from where she was leaning against the table and pinched your arm. Her playful glare made you giggle. She opens her mouth to talk again.
âNo, we arenât.â The Darkling answered for her. He noticed the frown on her face, sending her a tight lipped smile, signalling that they would talk later. âYou must be tired. Let me show you to your quarters. Alina, stay here.â He motioned for you to follow. Alina watched as the two of you left the war room, a sigh leaving her lips.
You followed him for a few paces before he stopped in front of a door. âYour room is right across from mine if you ever need anything. However I think everything you need is already there.â He replied. You waited around, wondering what was to happen next. He nodded his head towards the door, allowing you to enter. The room had been dark, no lanterns had been lit up due to the room being unoccupied. The Darkling called for an inferni. One came over quickly, lighting up the candles and lanterns as quickly as she could. The room was quite similar to Alinaâs, the only difference being that most of the furniture had his symbol engraved on it. Had this room once belonged to his lover? You were too afraid to ask, not wanting to overstep your boundaries. âIâll be back in the morning to give you a proper tour of the palace. Until then, get some rest.â Without bidding you goodbye, the Darkling left to go speak with Alina.
Without wasting a second, you ran towards the tub, drawing yourself a warm bath. It had been so long since you had been able to bathe by yourself. Youâd gotten used to bathing with the other female soldiers that you had forgotten had relaxing it could be. You wash all the accumulated dirt and grime from your body along with your hair. Feeling the water begin to grow cold, you reach for a robe before heading towards the dresser.
Itâs contents were luxurious. Many gorgeous dresses, all varying lengths. Countless nightgowns embroidered with flower designs. At the very end of the dresser was a kefta. No ordinary one, it was gold with black detailing. It seemed to stop mid knee. You wanted to reach out to it, to feel it underneath your fingertips but decided not to. Maybe another day. Instead you reached out for a nightgown and slipped it on. To your surprise it fit perfectly, almost too perfectly. Deciding not to dwell on it for much longer, you blow out the candles, leaving the lanterns alight and slip under the heavy covers of the bed. The fatigue from the journey finally caught up with you, and you found yourself sleeping within the minute.
-
âI wonât let you take them!â A voice that sounded like yours shouted. What were you talking about? Who were you talking about?
âYou have no say in this matter.â You couldnât tell who was talking and it frustrated you, it felt like their name was on the tip of your tongue.
âThereâs always a choice.â Before you knew it someone had pressed a cold blade against your throat, gasping emerging from the people around you.
âNo! Donât do it.â Someone pleaded just as another shouted your name.
âI wonât be your pawn, not anymore.â You said, the next thing you felt was the warmth of your own blood dripping on you. You stumbled back, your hands going to the laceration on your neck. You gasped and whimpered in pain as you felt more blood leave you. In the background you could hear someone screaming, another one sobbing whilst saying your name.
-
You woke up screaming, your hands going to your neck as you stumbled out of bed, falling onto the floor. The door to your room flew open and in came the Darkling along with the oprichniki. Some had their pistols drawn, ready to shoot, while others held their arms up. The Darkling and his guards ran about your room, looking for an intruder to find none. Noticing the state you were in, he ordered the guards to leave.
He crouched down to you, reaching out his hand to touch you before pulling back. âAre you alright?â Your gaze met his, you observed the sun's rays coming through your windows, lighting him up like an angel. His eyes held concern as you hesitated to answer him.
âIâm not sure..â For the first time in your life, you were terrified. You shed a few tears as you looked at him, your shaking hands still around your neck. He hovers his hand over yours, stopping just before they made contact. He was asking for permission to touch you. With a nod, he gently placed his hands atop of yours before removing them. The birthmark on your neck was now raw and red, as if you had been violently scratching it.
Your dream had left you in shambles as one thought ran wildly through your mind, was my birthmark a warning of what was to come?

Itâs Been Too Long
Shinobu Kochou x She/Her Reader
A/N: Alright Shinobu Community, take a fuckinâ sip babes. Itâs kind of a long one. My brain was like, friends to enemies to friends to lovers? To which I replied, this is going to be simultaneously too long and too short. I love me some slow burn but also I canât justify putting that much time into something like this lol. While writing this I learned that one becomes a Hashira by killing a demon moon OR killing at least fifty demons. I didn't know that before, but I was in too deep to fix things. Yâall are a Kinoe rank that probably should be a Hashira given how much slaying youâve done, sorry! As far as warnings go, I think weâre good. Unless fighting and misunderstandings arenât your thing. Itâll all be better in the end though!  Word Count: 15,088Â
The estate was dark and bleak. It had rained for nearly a week straight, the patter of water against the solid structure of the tiled roof was a near constant companion to the blank static of despair that clouded everyoneâs minds.
Kochou Kanae had died of lethal injuries bequeathed to her by a high ranking demon who had left her to bleed out as the sun made its appearance. Perhaps if it had risen even just a few minutes prior, she could have evaded such a cruel fate.
Shinobu had found her of course, the world is just that cruel, or perhaps kind in giving her sister that closure, to be able to see her one last time before she took her last gurgling breath.
It was appropriate, the rain. After the funeral it was a temporary reminder of the warmth that had been reaped from the estate, never to be felt again in this lifetime. Not that (Y/n), Kanao, Aoi, or the youngest residents of the estate needed a reminder. Shinobu certainly didnât either.
âShinobu, you didnât come to dinner. Please try to eat something.â (Y/n) coaxed, sliding the door open. The only light came from a small lantern inside the swirling gloom of the room, highlighting Shinobu hunched over her desk with her head in her hands. âShinobu?â
âItâs only been a week.â (Y/n) strained to hear the taut whisper of the girl who had grown to be her closest friend. The girl who had given her a second chance at life when she had nowhere else to go. It hurt to hear her sound so broken. âIt feels like time is standing still and going too fast at the same time.â
(Y/n) set the light meal in front of Shinobu and leaned against the desk, the wood creaked slightly as she did so. âI know what you mean. I feel the same.â
It wasnât the first time theyâve talked like this. To be survivors of such unthinkable atrocities, one could go crazy keeping it all locked inside. The guilt, fear, helplessness... sometimes the memories played on loop night after night, waking up to the screams in their minds making sick harmonies with their own.
âI donât know what Iâm supposed to do.â Shinobu spoke tentatively after a moment of drizzling static tapping against the roof. She raised herself just enough to wrestle a paper out from under her arms and slid it to (Y/n). âOyakata-sama has sent me a summons to meet with him and the Hashira. He intends for me to take,â Shinobuâs voice grew tighter and she could not bring herself to finish, instead a painful sounding intake of air was all that was audible.
(Y/n) took the paper, holding it close to her face as she squinted, the dull light of the lantern made the letter a bit difficult to read, but the message was clear.
âHe wants you to take her place.â (Y/n) frowned, a pained gleam pricked at the corners of her eyes.
âItâs been too long, but yet, not long enough,â Shinobuâs fists tightened, âI know the world hasnât stopped spinning, demons havenât stopped killing, but why do they want to replace her so quickly? Why are they willing to toss her aside? I donât...â
âShinobu,â
Shinobu finally looked up at (Y/n), angry and mournful tears tracked down her face, âIâm not my sister, Iâm not Hashira material. I canât fill the hole she left, (Y/n)!â
(Y/n) abandoned her perch on the desk to crouch beside Shinobu, enveloping her in her arms. Shinobu tightly grasped her back, watery gasps and sharp inhales fell from her lips as she tried to gain control of her breathing once more.
âOyakata-sama knows you arenât Kanae. Youâre strong in your own right, Shinobu. He wouldnât breach the subject if he didnât think you could succeed by your own merits.â
âI have to keep the estate in order, the infirmary, the girls... I canât take all this responsibilityââ
âYou donât have to,â (Y/n) cut her off, the words came a bit sharper than she meant them too, âyouâre not alone Shinobu. We can all have our own parts to play. You donât have to shoulder this all by yourself.â
âThank you.â Shinobuâs voice cracked.
They had stayed up well into the night. They hardly talked, the two young girls sat huddled together, holding each other tightly. No matter how much theyâve been hurt, time continues moving forward. Just because a boat has been shredded against a reef, that doesnât mean the waves will grant reprieve from their assault. No, one is expected to keep swimming or to swallow the salty brine and drown. The Butterfly Estateâs allotted time for grief had passed. Now they were being given the not so subtle command that it was time to get back to work.
***
âI wish you could come with me.â Shinobu said the next morning as she sat on the engawa to put on her shoes. âEven if they made you wait outside I would feel a bit better.â
âYouâll be okay, weâll be thinking about you all day and waiting for you to come back home.â (Y/n) assured, resting her hand on Shinobuâs back. She was almost afraid to touch the haori Shinobu now adorned, as if her hand would pass right through the material.
(Y/n) was surprised when she saw Shinobu wearing it instead of her usual short white haori, though she supposed there was comfort in holding this piece of her sister close. Perhaps the butterfly patterned haori could comfort Shinobu where (Y/n) and the others could not.
(Y/n) must have been staring too long because Shinobu leaned away from her hand, catching it with her own before (Y/n) could withdraw it completely. Shinobu squeezed the hand a moment, (Y/n) swore her heart froze upon seeing the ghostly smile painted over Shinobuâs lips.
âYouâre right. No point in fretting over it, is there?â
â...Right,â (Y/n) blinked, âyeah. Youâre going to do great.â (Y/n) managed a smile in return but she could feel the corner of her lips tremble at the effort. She wasnât sure why, but this smile Shinobu was sporting sent chills down her spine.
âIâll be off then,â Shinobu stood, releasing (Y/n)âs hand as she stepped away from the engawa, âDo make sure to keep everything in order while Iâm away.â
âOf course!â (Y/n) winced at her own volume and Shinobu exhaled a quiet chuckle before turning away to make her way down the path. (Y/n) watched until the haunting haori could no longer be seen between the wisteria trees.
***
It was rather late when Shinobu returned. (Y/n) had just helped the youngest girls of the estate get ready for bed and was heading to the kitchens to prepare some tea to help her sleep. She had jumped in her skin when she saw the back of the butterfly patterned haori in the dim lantern light. Shinobu turned at the sound and sent a small, tired smile (Y/n)âs way.
âI thought Iâd catch you here before you turned in for the night.â Shinobu spoke. âYou almost always take a cup of tea to bed. I hope you donât mind having some of what Iâve already prepared.â
It wasnât the first time Shinobu caught her going to the kitchen to make tea. Though usually it was much later in the dead of night when nightmares and grief kept sleep at bay. (Y/n) wasnât sure what kind of leaves or brewing Shinobu did, but her tea always managed to knock (Y/n) out cold into deep, dreamless bliss. Something about the way Shinobu was speaking was rubbing (Y/n) the wrong way however. There was none of the familiar attitude. The bashful bitterness that came with the sweetness of the tea. (Y/n) decided to shake it off and returned Shinobuâs tired smile. It would take time for things to seem normal again.
âYou know me too well. Thank you.â (Y/n) graciously took the cup, relishing in the cupâs warmth and the relaxing scent that wafted off of the steam. âHow did today go?â
âIt was... fine.â Shinobuâs smile faltered and she quickly disguised it by sipping her own tea. âIâm officially a Hashira. Insect Pillar Kochou Shinobu.â
âIt has a nice ring to it.â (Y/n) put in after a momentâs consideration hidden behind the guise of her clearing her throat. She didnât know if a âcongratulationsâ would be what Shinobu would want to hear give the circumstances that led up to her new title.
âAnd how was holding down the fort?â Shinobu asked. It seemed she wanted to shift the topic of conversation away from herself. Not that (Y/n) could blame her.
âEverything went smoothly. Well, Aoi did get a bit aggravated with Kanao about one of her coin decisions but we worked it out. Sumi, Kiyo and Naho are picking up the recovery training lessons quickly and are doing very well. The Kakushi have been taking great care of the infirmary. All patients were still stable last I checked in.â (Y/n) reported.
âThank you for keeping up with all of that.â
âI have to pull my weight around here somehow.â (Y/n) replied, hiding a yawn behind one hand.
âItâs getting late. You should get to bed before the tea kicks in any further.â Shinobu said, putting her own cup down.
âArenât you getting tired too?â
âI made myself a different brew, actually. Iâve got more work to do.â Shinobu allowed herself a little sly smile at the tiny frown (Y/n) wore as she looked into her own empty cup as if it had betrayed her somehow.
âWell, donât forget you need to sleep too. Donât overwork yourself.â
âGoodnight, (Y/n).â Shinobu called over her shoulder. She was already walking out of the kitchen.
âI mean it Shinobu. Promise me youâll sleep tonight.â (Y/n) gently demanded, slipping into the hall to fall in step beside Shinobu.
âIâll promise to try. Is that acceptable?â Shinobu asked, a bit of familiar snark came through and it made (Y/n) relax a bit and nod.
âAlright. Goodnight, Shinobu.â
At the end of the hall they broke off in different directions. Shinobu to the lab and (Y/n) to her room.
***
(Y/n) went through most of her morning routine before going out of her way to find the newly appointed Hashira. She hadnât seen her since they parted last night. (Y/n) groaned inwardly, already assuming sheâd find the young scientist still balancing equations and mixing beakers.
(Y/n) adjusted her butterfly hairpin before knocking her knuckles against the door, waiting for a reply.
âShinobu?â (Y/n) had called out after another knock led to no reply. (Y/n) frowned and slid the door open of her own volition, closing it behind her once she was inside. It didnât take long for her to find the exhausted girl hunched over an array of papers, dead asleep.
âWhen I told you to go to sleep last night, I had your own bed in mind, not a desk.â (Y/n) sighed quietly.
(Y/n) startled at another knock at the door.
âWho is it?â She asked, keeping her voice soft as to not disturb Shinobu.
âItâs Hayato, miss.â The muffled voice called. Ah, one of the Kakushi. âKochou-sama has guests to attend to.â
âSet them up in the garden with tea, please. Kochou-sama will meet them just as soon as she finishes these papers.â (Y/n) said. It would not do to have news of the young master of the estate sleeping so late in the morning, and at her desk no less.
The Kakushi dismissed himself to carry out his orders and (Y/n)â shoulders relaxed as his footprints faded down the hall. (Y/n) didnât want to wake Shinobu, but if her presence was required, then the meeting must be important.
âHey, Shinobu,â (Y/n) called softly, gently shaking Shinobuâs shoulders, âyou have guests that need to see you.â
Shinobu managed to curl further into herself, mumbling a few curses under her breath that (Y/n) couldnât help but giggle at.
âMaybe youâd feel better if you had actually gone to bed instead of passing out like this.â
âWho is it, what do they need?â Shinobu grumped, sitting up to stretch her abused spine.
âIâm not sure. A Kakushi came by to tell you about them. I asked him to set them up in the garden with tea.â
âThank you for taking care of that,â Shinobu rubbed her eyes and stood, her chair scratching against the floor, âI should get going then.â
âLet me fix your hair quick at least.â (Y/n) said, already freeing Shinobu of her own butterfly clip. âHold still.â
âItâs a little hard when you keep tugging your fingers through my hair.â Shinobu winced.
âSorry, just a second.â (Y/n) spoke around the butterfly wing that she held between her lips as her fingers worked to gather Shinobuâs hair. Once Shinobuâs hair was neatly clipped back into place, (Y/n) circled her and smoothed out the wrinkles in Shinobuâs clothes the best she could before finally backing away with a satisfied nod.
âAre you done yet?â Shinobu asked, a faint dusting of blush powdered her cheeks.
âYeah, you still look tired, but at least you look a little more presentable.â (Y/n) said, opening the lab door and ushering Shinobu through it.
âPresentable.â Shinobu scoffed. âCome with me to the garden?â
âI donât know if that would be appropriate. Iâm not sure who is visiting.â
âJust make yourself busy in the blooms. You live here, you can go where you please.â
âOkay, Iâll come.â
The young girls made their way outside, it was warm and sunny, a bit humid as well after all the rain the week before. The sweet smell of the flowers invited deeper breaths to swallow up the scent into every bronchiole of their lungs.
(Y/n) broke off from Shinobu with a little wave, giving a respectful acknowledgment to the people waiting with their tea before busying herself with the flora. Checking on the quality of the plants as Kanae had taught her. The memories spent with the older girl who had taught her so much made (Y/n) shiver despite the warmth of the sun beating down.
(Y/n) would on occasion, discreetly observe the progression of the meeting. The smile Shinobu wore as she spoke to the visitors unnerved her. Even just the way Shinobu was holding herself now, prim and proper, (Y/n) wondered what they could possibly be talking about.
Then the familiar cawing of a crow circling over her head broke (Y/n) from her thoughts. She released her gentle grip over the flower she had stopped to smell and craned her neck to see her crow calling out to her. A mission, her heartbeat picked up in pace. She hadnât been on one since a few days before Kanaeâs death. How out of practice could she be?
âPardon the noise,â (Y/n) bowed. The meeting had paused in their hushed conversation to observe the bird as well. (Y/n) hardly gave Shinobu a glance as she past. Her fingers trembling slightly as she made her way back inside to retrieve her nichirin blade from her room. (Y/n)âs mind buzzed and her crowâs caws sounded muted and muffled, far away. She kept walking, willing her breaths to remain controlled. Her concentration broke as a hand reached out from behind her and tugged her back.
(Y/n) turned to meet Shinobuâs eyes. Though more subdued, the concern she saw there was genuine.
â(Y/n), I kept telling you to stop. Are you listening to me?â
âIâm sorry, I guess I was just focusing on the mission ahead.â
Shinobu breathed deeply releasing the air in a shaky exhale before gripping (Y/n)âs face in one hand, surprising her.
âNo you werenât.â Shinobuâs grip was firm, âYou need to concentrate on your surroundings. I was almost yelling at you just now. I need to know you are going to be able to keep your head about you out there.â
(Y/n) tried to nod her head but Shinobuâs hand kept her head in place.
âI need to hear you say it.â Shinobu said.
âI can keep my head. I will.â (Y/n) swallowed uncomfortably.
Shinobu searched (Y/n)âs face, slowly releasing her grip from (Y/n)âs jaw and instead grabbed at the neck of (Y/n)âs uniform pulling her so close their noses bumped.
âYou better,â She spoke softly.
âI will,â (Y/n) repeated.
Shinobu untensed, her fingers released (Y/n)âs uniform and she wrapped her arms around her in a tight hug that (Y/n) quickly reciprocated.
âYour meeting,â (Y/n) recalled after a moment.
âI asked to be excused. Iâm the master of the estate, I can get away with escaping for for a few minutes.â
âI wouldnât make a habit out of it if I were you.â (Y/n) attempted to joke.
âOnly when it matters.â Shinobu nodded seriously, causing (Y/n)âs heart to leap.
(Y/n)âs crow cawed impatiently and the girls parted. (Y/n) left to retrieve her blade and Shinobu watched her back as she left, her hands clenched into tight fists beneath the sleeves of her sisterâs haori.
***
Night after night, the missions kept coming. (Y/n) had begun to wonder if sheâd ever get to go home again as days became weeks. Scattered letters between waves of demon slaying were the best she could manage to make sure everyone back home knew she was alright.
Another night, a new moon. A few more nights and it would be a full month since sheâd last seen everyone. She was glad she took the time to say goodbye before she left. She never imagined sheâd be asked to work for so long without reprieve.
Another well timed flower breathing technique beheads another demon and (Y/n) falls against the trunk of a tree breathing hard. She is uninjured but greatly fatigued. The thought to sit and rest hardly enters her mind before her crow commands her eastward to eliminate another threat before dawn.
Breath after breath, technique after technique, night after night (Y/n) fought until everything ached and beyond. When she saw the the sun peak out over the horizon it was almost enough to bring (Y/n) to tears, but she never faltered. She had to stay strong. This was the life she chose to pursue. To save people from the same fate that befallen so many people she had cared about.
It was during an exceptionally hot day when the sun was at its highest point that (Y/n) flinched awake at the shrill squawks she had grown to loathe.
âWhat?â She hissed between her teeth, her fingers knotting in the grass that had served as her bed for the day.
âReturn home to the Butterfly Estate! Return home to recover and rest! Await further instruction!â
(Y/n) lifted herself to rest on her elbows to stare wide-eyed at the bird sitting in the tree branch overhead. For the first time in that very long month, she allowed the tears to finally fall.
***
(Y/n) felt nervous coming back after so long. She opted to return from the rear entrance in an attempt to not garner too much attention. She allowed herself a tentative smile as the gardens came into view. Her fingers skimmed across the colorful blooms as she walked, freezing up only when she saw Shinobu collecting herbs in the distance. Her foot snapped a twig, alerting Shinobu to glance behind her.
âHi, stranger.â Shinobu simpered, getting to her feet. âOh!â
(Y/n) forgot all her previous worries and jogged up to Shinobu, picking her up with the added strength that she had built up in her month long absence and twirled her around with abandon.
â(Y/n)?â Shinobu chuckled with surprise, bracing her arms around (Y/n)âs shoulders as she was flung around.
âI missed you!â (Y/n) sniffled, finally putting the girl down but still holding her tightly.
âI missed you too.â Shinobu said, rubbing (Y/n)âs back. âWhat took so long getting back, hm?â
âMission after mission after mission.â came (Y/n)âs bitter reply. âI actually cried when my crow told me I could come home... I donât know why I told you that. Thatâs embarrassing.â
Shinobu laughed, pulling back from (Y/n) to get a good look at her. âMy, (Y/n), I can tell your time away had made you stronger. Even if you are still a bit of a crybaby.â
âHey!â (Y/n) pouted.
â(Y/n) is back!â
âWoah!â
(Y/n) was sent stumbling backward a few steps by three blurs of white. Naho, Sumi and Kiyo spoke a mile a minute filling in (Y/n) on all the goings on of the estate. Aoi and Kanao came by soon after and gave (Y/n) their own greetings, expressing their happiness over the slayerâs return in their own ways.
It was good to be home, it was. But after a few days, (Y/n) really got a chance to see how different Shinobu had become.
The tone of her voice carried like a soft breeze and a polite smile could always be seen on her lips. Aoi reminded (Y/n) more of the Shinobu she remembered than the current Shinobu before her. It unnerved her. The way Shinobu would tilt her head just so and giggle daintily into her hand... it was like staring at a ghost.
(Y/n) thought she could get over the change, but she simply couldnât. Not when staring into those dark, purple eyes. Oh, how they swirled with anger and despair. If Shinobu couldnât fully believe in the persona she had crafted for herself, then (Y/n) wouldnât either. Late one night while helping Shinobu in the lab, (Y/n) finally decided to confront her.
âWhy do you keep smiling like that?â (Y/n) frowned, worrying the page of the textbook before her between her fingers.
âHm? Iâm afraid I donât quite know what you mean.â Shinobu replied casually, smile still firmly in place as she crushed some herbs under her pestle.
âYou do too know what I mean,â (Y/n) eyebrows furrowed slightly in aggravation, âwhy do you keep smiling like youâre okay when youâre clearly not?â
âWhat have I said or done that makes you think Iâm not okay? Iâm perfectly fine, (Y/n),â she chuckled, âyou worry for nothing.â
âThat mask might have everyone else fooled... or maybe theyâre just complacent, but Iâm tired of pretending nothing is wrong. Talk to me, Shinobu.â
âDonât be ridiculous,â Shinobu shook her head, âthere is nothing to discuss. Perhaps Iâve kept you up too late.â
âYou shouldnât have to hide what youâre truly feeling,â (Y/n) persisted, ânot from me at least. I thought we were friends.â
âWe are.â Shinobuâs tone was nearly clipped as she crushed the herbs a bit more vigorously.
âThen stop acting so, so fake!â (Y/n) spat, wincing almost immediately as fast has the words came out. There was probably a better way she could have said that. Before she could apologize and try again, Shinobu put the pestle on the table with a harsh clink and stalked over to where (Y/n) was sitting. Fighting to keep her tone in check, she stared (Y/n) down with that plastic smile and spoke in a low, hushed tone that filled (Y/n)âs veins with ice.
âSo Iâm fake, is that right? People change, (Y/n). You were gone for a month, you canât expect everyone to wait for you, to not change or grow in your absence.â
âPeople change, yes,â (Y/n) swallowed tightly at the proximity, âbut whatever this is Shinobu, I really donât think itâs healthy. I can tell youâre bottling something up. Kanaeââ
âLeave.â
â...what?â
âLeave,â Shinobu closes the textbook in front of (Y/n) and although she does so with care, the sound is deafening in (Y/n)âs ears, âI donât care where you go, just get out of my lab. Iâve had my fill of this mindless chatter.â
âAre you being serious right now?â (Y/n) clenched her fists and stood from her chair, the legs slid roughly against the wood below.
âYes, I donât have time for immature children right now Iâm afraid.â Came Shinobuâs airy reply.
âImmatureâ stop acting like you know better than me, weâre both kids, weâre fourteen!â (Y/n) seethes, âIâm worried about you! I care about you! Donât you get it?â
âYour worry is unfounded. Itâs late and you are being of no help to me like this so Iâll ask you once more, leave.â
(Y/n) felt heat pricking the corners of her eyes. âI feel like I donât know who you are anymore.â She breathed. âBut fine, Iâll leave if thatâs what you want.â
âAt this moment in time, I couldnât ask for anything better.â Shinobu replied, turning her back to (Y/n) to continue what she had previously been working on.
Once (Y/n) shut the door with finality and her quick footsteps became softer as she ran down the hall, Shinobu exhaled harshly, gripping the pestle tightly in her hand as she mercilessly pounded the dried herbs into dust.
âOnly immature people donât control their emotions... only immature people...â
As Shinobu repeated her mantra, (Y/n) burst into her room and looked around her. With trembling hands she changed into a fresh uniform and packed a small bag of belongings and slinging it over her shoulder. She grabbed her haori and attached her nichirin blade to her hip.
She looked around the room once more and caught her reflection in the little hand mirror on her desk, catching the bright colors of a wing that secured her hair in place. She reached back, freeing her hair from the clip and stared at it. She ran her thumb over the decorative clip before setting it on the desk. She reached for a plain hair band and tied her hair back with that instead.
(Y/n) left her room, sparing one last hurt glance at the butterfly clip before exiting the estate grounds. Before long, her crow circled overhead and (Y/n) held her arm out for the bird to take perch. The crow cawed at her expectantly, questioning her.
âIf she wants me to leave, then what else is there to do?â (Y/n) shuddered in the wind. She turned away from the estate, willing herself not to turn back.
âWhere will you go?â The crow asked.
â...I donât know.â
With every step leaving the warmth of the estate farther behind, (Y/n)âs heart grew heavier in her chest.
***
âHave any of you seen (Y/n) today?â Shinobu asked the girls once they had come back in after hanging the laundry out to dry.
A chorus of negatives and head shakes met her and she sighed inwardly. âVery well then. Thank you.â
Shinobu traveled through the maze of hallways that made up her home, easily finding herself in front of (Y/n)âs door, knocking politely. With no reply, Shinobu forced herself not to roll her eyes and opened the door.
â(Y/n), if this is about last night...â Shinobu blinked at the empty room. Futon made, clean floors, not a thing out of place, but no (Y/n).
âPerhaps sheâs out training.â Shinobu said to herself. She was about to close the door and head off into the gardens when a glint from the desk caught her eye and she approached. A soft gasp left her lips as she picked up the hairpin. Cradling it in her hands, Shinobu forced her breaths to remain controlled. (Y/n) had never gone a day without wearing the pin since the Kochou sisters gifted it to her.
In the safety of the empty room, Shinobu allowed herself to slump over the desk. She held the discarded hairpin close to her chest, immediately understanding what this small symbol meant. Yes, she knew what it meant, she just wished to know why. She fought against the waves, against the feeling that she was drowning again.
***
Four years was a long time, and if you asked (Y/n), the demon slayer would say that was especially true with her line of work. The demons were never the same, but the routine in between was lonely and dull. Kill a demon, settle down at an inn or in the trees for the day, move to the next village and repeat. Sometimes the stays were longer, but that was the gist of it.
(Y/n) kept to herself most of the time. There wasnât really a point in making anything more than loose acquaintances with the constant traveling and dangers her work presented. Even on the few missions she had been paired up with other slayers in the area, she focused on the job at hand before quickly making her way to her next assignment. That started to change after she met Kamado Tanjirou and his demon sister Nezuko.
They did not get off on the right foot to say the least.
(Y/n) had been sent to the same location as the young slayer for a mission and knew something was off about him right away. Something off with that box he carried around anyway. (Y/n) opted to let him be for the time being, focusing on the mission ahead. Skip forward to the heat of battle, and (Y/n) could hardly believe her eyes when a demon burst from the boyâs box to attack another demon that had snuck around Tanjirouâs back.
(Y/n) had no time to watch and focus on this new development at the moment, she had her own demons to take care of. Her flower breathing techniques weaved through her enemies and heads went flying. Before long, the mission was completed and (Y/n) turned to the boy breathing heavily in the dirt with the demon from the box hovering over him looking at (Y/n) with curious eyes.
âYouâre really skilled, (Y/n)-san!â Tanjirou praised, somehow unaware of the danger his sister was in, âYou donât even look like youâre out of breath.â
âIâve been doing this for years. I know a lot. For instance,â (Y/n) spoke, her face stern as stone as she readied her blade, startling Tanjirou, âevery demon must be destroyed.â She went in with a quick slash aimed at the demonâs neck  only to pause at the last second when the foolish younger boy leapt to his feet to shield the demon from the blow.
âWhat are you doing?â (Y/n) asked sternly.
âWait, sheâs my sister! Sheâs a good demon!â
âI shouldnât have to tell you that what you are doing is against corps rules. I can sympathize with wanting to hold onto your loved ones, but there is no such thing as a good demon. Step aside.â
âNo, Nezuko has never eaten a human and she never will!â Tanjirou held his ground while his sister growled at (Y/n) from behind him.
(Y/n) rolled her eyes. âAlright then,â she said with a sarcastic sweetness, âprove it.â
âWhat?â Tanjirou blinked.
âProve it, take off the muzzle. Letâs see if she has as much control as you claim she does.â
âButââ
âIt shouldnât be a problem, right? If sheâs as docile as you claim whatâs the issue?â
Tanjirou grit his teeth and gently pulled the muzzle to rest around his sisterâs neck. (Y/n) stepped forward, her face inches away from the demon. She wasnât worried, if the demon lunged for her she was confident she could slice its head the moment the air changed.
âWell demon?â (Y/n) sighed, surprising Tanjirou by slicing the pad of her thumb on her sharp blade, âhungry?â
To Nezukoâs credit, she hardly flinched. However, her eyes followed the path of the blood and a small trickle of drool slid past her lips. (Y/n) taunted her a bit further, waving the bloodied hand in front of her nose, still Nezuko held strong and even went as far as turning away.
â...I must say, Iâm rather impressed,â (Y/n) finally spoke, stepping back from the demon and licking at her own wound, âmarechi blood such as my own usually makes the demons go crazy,â she turns back to Tanjirou, âstill, you must know that keeping a demon alive like this, especially as a slayer, is dangerous for both of you.â
âI know,â Tanjirou bowed his head.
âWell,â (Y/n) stretched and sighed, âas long as you know I guess itâs your own problem.â
âHuh?â
âYeah, just donât call me out if a Hashira finds you out. I donât feel like dying a disgrace.â (Y/n) waved him off. âYouâre going to have to work even harder and be more discreet. Thatâs my advice to you.â And (Y/n) was going to leave it at that and walk away, but then her crow chanted in tandem with Tanjirouâs, calling them to continue forward together. (Y/n)â˛s eye twiched at the grating sounds.
âIt looks like weâll still be working together for some time, (Y/n)-san!â Tanjirou smiled, catching the older girl off guard by the sincerity behind it. Youâd think heâd be more put off considering (Y/n) was planning to kill his sister not five minutes ago.
âI suppose we are.â
âSay, (Y/n)-san, youâre strong. You can help me get stronger too, right?â
âMm!â
âHey, get her off of me!â (Y/n) momentarily panicked as the demon wrapped her arms around her waist.
âNezuko, manners!â
(Y/n) wasnât sure what she had done to get saddled with the strange siblings, but she could tell her job just went above her pay grade.
***
As it turns out, the Kamado siblings werenât so bad. In fact, (Y/n) was starting to get really attached to the two. It was when Inosuke and Zenitsu were pulled into their little group, that was when (Y/n) realized she didnât know what true pain was.
â(Y/n)-san, marry me!â
âFlower Girl, fight me!â
All damn day and night.
(Y/n) thought sheâd finally have reprieve once Tanjirou had healed up at the Wisteria House, but of course the two boisterous boys were being sent with them to their next mission, Natagumo Mountain.
Zenitsu cowered at the forest edge and (Y/n) felt no remorse in leaving him behind as she sprinted ahead of Inosuke and Tanjirou, freeing the puppeted Mizunoto slayers.
Eventually they had been split off from each other to fight their own battles. (Y/n) was tired but otherwise unharmed, surprised when a small Nezuko came barreling into her.
âNezuâ?â (Y/n) gasped as the air shifted above her and she dodged the quick swipe aimed at the tiny body that clung to her. She quickly pivoted, blade in hand, and crossed swords with the assailant her eyes blowing wide at the placid face in front of her.
âKanao?!â (Y/n) yelled out, the nostalgia and adrenaline coursing through her body was an odd, slightly terrifying combination.
Kanao tilted her head, her lips parted ever so slightly as recognition gleamed in her eyes. Despite this, Kanao did have a mission to complete and (Y/n) was keeping her from completing her orders. She continued swiping at the older girl she used to know, trying to behead the demon she could not fathom why she was protecting.
(Y/n) parried and blocked best she could, taking a defensive approach while she tried to talk Kanao down. She didnât want to hurt Kanao, but she didnât want Nezuko to be killed either.
Finally a saving grace, a crow swooping by with a message that saved Nezukoâs neck. (Y/n) sighed in relief as Kanao pulled back. Still looking at (Y/n) she pointed to the small demon that had wrapped herself tightly over (Y/n)âs back.
âIs this Nezuko?â She asked looking for a positive ID on the demon in question.
âYes.â (Y/n) easily replied.
âCome with me then.â Kanao said, already corralling (Y/n) and her demon backpack in the direction of the forest edge.
(Y/n) walked alongside her a bit begrudgingly. If she made a break for it, she could have probably gotten away, but it was very likely Tanjirou and the others were already in custody. The best chance they had now was to do as they were told and hope Nezukoâs resolve would stand firm.
So (Y/n) hid Nezuko in her haori as the sun began to peak over the hills and followed Kanao to the clearing of bustling Kakushi. On the way, she began preparing her story for the trial she was sure her little team was bound to endure.
She was immediately broken from her thoughts at the ethereal sight of the Insect Pillar emerging from another point of the woods with the Water Pillar and a badly beaten Tanjirou on his back.
(Y/n)âs breath caught in her throat as those deep, dark eyes found hers at it was like time was at a stand still. At least it would have been if not for Shinobu steadily making her way towards her, her expression painfully impassive beyond the small upturn of her lips. Shinobu kept coming until she was directly in front of (Y/n).
Nezuko stirred in her sleep, clutching at (Y/n)âs back as if she could sense anxiety in the slayerâs heart. The demon was the only thing grounding her at this point as Shinobu tilted her head, an almost sinister look in her eye as she observed the small demon bundle protected by (Y/n)âs haori. All too soon, her cold eyes found their way back to (Y/n)âs and she spoke.
âIâm not going to have to tie you up, am I?â
(Y/n) closed her eyes briefly and tried to take a calming breath. With a short, almost imperceivable shake of her head, she hoarsely replied.
âNo.â
âLetâs try to keep it that way then.â
Shinobu and Kanao had let (Y/n) help Nezuko into her box, but then they immediately separated the two, having a Kakushi carry the box with a wary look in her eyes. (Y/n) did her best not to look behind her where Kanao and Shinobu walked, no doubt watching her for any sign of flight.
She gulped, eyes nervously shifting to the Water Pillar walking beside her, and the Kakushi who was now carrying Tanjirou in his stead. The Water Pillar spared her an emotionless glance as he forged ahead.
âIs he going to be alright?â She asked in a hushed tone.
Enough time had passed after her question that (Y/n) had figured the man wasnât in the mood to talk, understandably so, but (Y/n) was worried about the state Tanjirou was in. She nearly jumped out of her skin when he actually answered her minutes later.
âThat will all depend on how the trial goes.â
(Y/n) felt dread pool in her stomach as they continued to march down the mountain.
***
The garden of the Masterâs estate would have been lovely on any other occasion, but (Y/n) could only bring herself to stare at the pebbles below her knees and Tanjirou passed out at her side. They had taken Nezuko somewhere else in the meantime, she could only hope they would let the demon be, let her prove herself in front of them instead of killing her on principle.
(Y/n) could feel that Shinobu was standing just behind her but she dared not engage. Four years of silence between the two and a trial for treason in the highest regard had brought them together again. (Y/n) wanted to scream.
Finally Tanjirou began to stir and (Y/n) allowed herself to push away her turmoil to rouse the younger boy gently. The last thing they needed was for him to be all up in arms before the trial even officially began.
â(Y/n)-san,â Tanjirou winced, âwhere are we? Where is Nezuko?â
âWeâre at the Demon Slayer Headquarters,â (Y/n) replied, her voice was hardly above a whisper as she felt the pressure of all the Hashiraâs eyes boring into them, âI donât know where theyâre keeping Nezuko, but right now you need to focus on the trial ahead.â
âThe trial?â
âFor harboring a demon, Tanjirou.â
âI wouldnât bother trying to justify it! A crime as heinous as yours only ends one way!â Rengoku Kyojirou loudly proclaimed, rallying a range of replies from his fellow pillars.
âNow that heâs finally awake to witness his punishment, letâs behead these traitors and the demon and get on with our lives.â Uzui Tengen added.
âPlease,â (Y/n) forced her voice not to waiver, âallow him to explain the situation at leastââ
âYouâre in no position to be asking for favors, girl.â Obanai Iguro cut her off, glaring down at her from where he lounged on a tree branch. âYou had best hold your tongue. A slayer at your rank should be ashamed. Iâm surprised you havenât already sliced yourself open for the embarrassment youâve brought to the corps.â
âIguro-san!â Kanroji gasped at the harsh words.
âWho are these people, (Y/n)-san?â Tanjirou groaned, noticing for the first time that his hands were tied tightly behind his back.
âTanjirou, are you serious?â (Y/n)âs tone was hushed and urgent, âtheyâre the Hashira! You know, best of the demon slayers?â
âI donât know, umph!â (Y/n) hastily covered his mouth, a nervous sweat gathered at her brow.
âJust try to be respectful, will you? You already broke the thin ice youâve been traveling on, letâs try not to drown as well!â
âThis isnât right, (Y/n)-san! Where is Nezuko? Zenitsu? Inosuke? Murata?â Tanjirou spoke out, his voice heavy with emotion as he fought his way up to his knees.
âWhat I want to know is why we havenât tied Tomioka or the Kinoe ranked slayer.â Obanai sneered from his tree, ignoring Tanjirouâs desperate tone. âThey are both part of the boyâs schemes and should be punished as such. How are we going to teach them a lesson?â
âOh theyâll be fine,â (Y/n) shivered hearing Shinobu speak above her from where she knelt in the pebbles, âweâll come up with a penalty later.â
(Y/n) froze, her eyes refused to look up beyond the feet that stood before Tanjirou and herself.
âWhat Iâm interested right now, is hearing this boyâs story.â Shinobu said. âHeâs been traveling with a demon all this time, and I wish to hear why. It must be quite the tale to have Tomioka-san break ranks,â the feet take a step closer and Shinobuâs voice dropped in volume, âand you as well, (Y/n).â
(Y/n) tightened her grip over her pant leg, still refusing to look up. She could imagine an array of expressions her old friend could be wearing right now that could cut her deeper than any blade. Pity, anger, disgust, smugness, apathy, that blank smile... no, (Y/n) couldnât bear to look up.
âSo why, Kamado Tanjirou?â Shinobu asked.
âWho cares?â Uzui scoffed from a few yards away, yet he waited for the boy to explain himself.
âSheâs myââ he broke into a fit of coughs and (Y/n) tried to soothe his back, telling him to breathe.
Shinobu stooped down, a gourd of water in hand, offering the water to Tanjirou and finally catching (Y/n)âs eyes as the boy drank the medicated water. When Shinobuâs eyes returned to Tanjirou, (Y/n) remembered how to breathe.
âSheâs my little sister!â Tanjirou proclaimed. âSheâs never hurt anyone and she never will!â
A few of the Hashira began casting their doubt, but Tanjirou powered through.
âI became a slayer to find a cure for her! In two whole years since she became a demon, sheâs never eaten a single person! Let her continue to fight by my side!â
âWell, well, looks like the funâs already starting.â
(Y/n) turned her head and her breathing hitched. Of course the Wind Pillar of all people would get his hands on Nezukoâs box.
âIs this the boy who has been traveling with a demon? Just what the hell do you think youâre doing?â Shinazugawa asked with a sinister grin.
âPlease put down the box Shinazugawa-sama!â The Kakushi (Y/n) recalled to have prior possession of the box pleaded.
âShinazugawa, please do not act out of line.â Shinobu warned.
âNah, run that by me again, kid?â Sanemi jeered, holding the box precariously in one hand, âfighting alongside a demon? Impossible, you idiot!â
Tanjirou and (Y/n) called out in horror as the Hashira rammed his blade clean through the box, skewering Nezuko.
Tanjirou scrambled to his feet and lunged at Sanemi, (Y/n) was about to get to her feet as well, but Shinobu held her firmly in place, clutching (Y/n)âs arm tightly while shooting her a warning glance.
(Y/n) could only watch, mouth agape, as Tanjirou head butted Shinazugawa to the ground.
Mitsuri attempted to stifle a snort, covering her face in her hands.
âIf you canât tell the difference between good demons and bad ones, then you donât deserve to be a Hashira!â Tanjirou yelled.
âWeâre doomed.â (Y/n) whispered weakly. She felt as if all her blood was sinking to her knees, sinking as fast as their chance of forgiveness down the drain.
Before Sanemi could retaliate, a couple of Oyakata-samaâs children announced the Masterâs arrival. (Y/n) was quick to follow Shinobu in a bow, wincing when she heard what could only be Sanemi pounding Tanjirou into the rocks, forcing him to bow.
âHello everyone,â Oyakata-sama addressed the garden, his voice carried in the warm breeze, âhow good it feels to have you all here.â
Sanemi greeted the Master, formally asking for an explanation. If not for the seriousness of the moment, (Y/n) would have rolled her eyes.
âThe Kamado siblings have been sanctioned, you see. I request you all respect that.â Oyakata stated simply.
An array of mostly negative objections arose at this ending with Sanemi calling for punishments for Tanjirou, (Y/n), and Giyuu.
The Master stood silently for a moment before asking one of his children to read a letter aloud. A letter from a previous Hashira, detailing Nezukoâs history. The letter also revealing that should Nezuko fail; Urokodaki, Tanjirou, and Giyuu would atone through seppuku.
A few of the Hashira were still willing to speak against such a plan, swearing that it was not a risk worth taking. Once there was a lull in their heated remarks, Ubuyashiki saw fit to address (Y/n).
â(Y/n), my child.â
(Y/n)âs head jutted up at the sudden call of attention to her presence. âYeâ yes, Master?â
âWhy do you think that of the squad that has been built around you, only you are here?â Oyakata-sama asked with an warm smile.
âI would suppose it would be because I should know better than a ragtag group of Mizunoto, Master.â came (Y/n)âs subdued reply.
âI would hope so.â The Master chuckled, causing heat to bloom across (Y/n)âs cheeks. âWhy didnât you kill the demon?â
âI was going to, but she proved herself to me,â (Y/n) began speaking more evenly as she recalled the moment, âI presented her with my blood, my rare blood, and she turned away. I have traveled with the Kamado siblings for weeks and not once had Nezuko hurt anyone. She protects people, she sleeps to replenish energy. Based on everything I have observed, I believe in Nezuko. I believe in Tanjirou.â
âWould you stake your life on this along with the others listed here today?â Oyakata-sama asked.
(Y/n) breathed in, firmly nodding her head. Her eyes meeting Ubuyashikiâs milky blank oneâs despite his lack of vision.
âYes, I would.â
Shinobuâs hold on (Y/n)âs bicep curled. (Y/n) hadnât realized she had still been holding her down.
âAnd here we have three, now four, people willing to take responsibility for this demon. What say you, my children?â The Master asked the Hashira warmly.
âForgive me Master, but this is not a matter of numbers!â Sanemi yelled, âDemons are sick creatures that need to be put down and Iâll prove it to you now!â
Sanemi sliced his arm, much more blood than (Y/n) had conjured with the small cut to her thumb that she had presented to Nezuko. She and Tanjirou watched as the blood dripped to the box, staining the lacquered wood.
âNo good doing this in the light.â Obanai said, âit wonât come out unless itâs dark.â
Sanemi dashed to the shaded engawa, enticing Nezuko to come out with another stab at the box.
âNo!â Tanjirou yelled, he made to scramble to the engawa, but was quickly subdued by Obanai.
âStop!â (Y/n) echoed Tanjirouâs sentiments, pulling against Shinobuâs hold. âWhy are you being so needlessly cruel?â
Sanemi ignored them, a wicked grin on his face as he watched Nezuko emerge from the box, growling lowly.
âWell then, demon?â He sneered, holding out his arm.
(Y/n) could tell Nezuko was straining against the pull of the marechi blood. With all of the injuries she had sustained working against her as well, it couldnât be easy for the demon to hold back.
âNezuko!â Tanjirou wheezed as Obanai was pincering his lung painfully with his elbow.
âKamado-kun,â Shinobu addressed, âdonât struggle too much while in that hold, your lung might burst.â
Tanjirou only struggled harder, surprising everyone when he broke through his rope restraints and stumbled towards the engawa. Tomioka stopped Obanai from pinning him again.
âNezuko!â Tanjirou called again.
His voice seemed to finally break through to Nezuko and after a few tense moments, she turned away from Sanemi in disgust.
(Y/n) couldnât help the relieved smile that overtook her lips.
Once the scene was relayed to the Master, he seemed pleased with the report. He told Tanjirou that although Nezuko had done well to prove herself, they would need to grow even stronger before they could be fully accepted by the others. With that wisdom, he said they were free to go.
(Y/n) startled as Shinobu finally let her go, raising her arm to speak. âIf all is well then Oyakata-sama, allow me to provide lodging for them.â
Both (Y/n) and Tanjirou seemed a bit wary of this sudden hospitality, (Y/n) even more so, but if Shinobu noticed or cared she didnât show it, signaling the Kakushi who had been standing by to gather the injured boy and the demon.
The Kakushi tasked with carrying Nezuko seemed a bit frightened of the little demon kneeling in her box, so naturally (Y/n) rose to carry her instead.
âIâve got her.â She smiled kindly and reached for the box and secured it shut, but not before giving the demon girl a few well earned head pats that rose Nezukoâs mood greatly.
Another Kakushi picked up Tanjirou then (Y/n) and the two Kakushi quickly made their retreat. That is, until Tanjirou bursted back into the garden asking to headbutt Sanemi.
âPlease excuse us!â (Y/n) and the two Kakushi bowed deeply once they got him back under control and sped off twice as fast. (Y/n) and the Kakushi running beside her berated Tanjirou from where he sat on the other Kakushiâs back for such a disrespectful display after being allowed the impossible.Â
When they reached the Butterfly Estate, (Y/n)âs heart squeezed in her chest. The grounds looked to be near the same as the night she had left. No one was there to greet them at the door, so they went around the gardens and found Kanao standing amongst the butterflies.
âHi, Kanao.â (Y/n) greeted the younger girl bashfully. Now that they werenât battling over keeping Nezukoâs head, (Y/n) finally took in how much she had grown in four years.
Kanao stayed silent, a serene smile on her lips as she merely observed the group that had approached her.
âWhat are you all here for?â A sharp voice called from behind them, causing the Kakushi to jump and spin to quickly explain they were here to put Tanjirou in the infirmary.
âWell then come with me...â Aoiâs words trailed off a bit once her eyes found (Y/n)âs face.
âHi Aoi,â (Y/n) gave a nervous half wave, âyouâve gotten a bit taller.â
Aoi marched straight up to (Y/n) and berated her with a barrage of small fists pounding painlessly against her chest. âWhat would you expect after being gone so long!â She sniffed, âFour years without a single letter or visit? We thought you were dead, idiot!â
â(Y/n)-san? Do you know these people?â Tanjirou asked from Gotouâs back.
âYeah, I uh, sorta used to live here.â (Y/n) replied, allowing Aoi to continue hitting her to her heartâs content.
ââSorta used to live hereâ, youâre family! You have always had a place here! Now come on, Iâm sure Kiyo, Sumi, and Naho will have a bone to pick with you as well. And Shinobu-sama!â Aoiâs fist struck especially hard at the thought, âShinobu-sama is going to have some choice words for you when she gets back I just know it!â
Aoi led them all inside, occasionally throwing a few more jabs into (Y/n)âs side to make sure she was really there. She didnât admit that was what they were for of course, she played it off more as a punishment for disappearing for so long.
There was screaming coming from the infirmary and (Y/n) would have been worried if she hadnât recognized the sound almost immediately.
âZenitsu!â Tanjirou called excitedly.
While Tanjirou and poor Gotou were dealing with the sobbing, snotty boy, Aoi had dragged (Y/n) over to Kiyo who had been tending to Zenitsu only moments before.
âLook who finally decided to come home.â Aoi told the younger girl who looked up, tilting her head. (Y/n) almost thought Kiyo hadnât recognized her. Being as young as she was, she wouldnât have blamed her, but then she burst forward and hugged (Y/n) tightly around her waist.
âWhatâs going on in here? Hm, Aoi-san, Kiyo?â
Naho and Sumi had made their way into the infirmary with a basket of fresh linens and paused at the entryway for a moment before they realized who their friend was hugging and ran over to join her with tears in their eyes.
â(Y/n)-san, where have you been all this time?â Naho whimpered.
âWhy didnât you say anything before you left?â Sumi cried.
âIâm sorry,â (Y/n) knelt down to better hug them all, âI know itâs not enough to make up for anything, but Iâm sorry for leaving like that. It wasnât fair,â she looked up to meet Aoiâs stern blue eyes, âto any of you.â
âWell, make it up to us by sticking around from now on.â Aoi said, crossing her arms. âNo more running away.â
âBut...â (Y/n) was conflicted. Had Shinobu not told the girls why she had left? (Y/n) mustered up the best smile she could and nodded feebly. âAll right.â
â(Y/n)-san, your box is... humming?â Sumi pointed at the wooden box.
âOh, um, you see... in this box is my friend, Nezuko,â (Y/n) treaded carefully, not wishing to startle the girls too badly if she could help it.
âYou have someone in a box?â Aoi barked, âwell let them out for goodness sake!â
âItâs a little bright in here...â (Y/n) shifted her vision to where Tanjirou and Zenitsu were talking, catching sight of Inosuke as well. Poor boar boy looked like heâd seen better days. âAnd Iâm not sure that Shinobu-â should she still speak of her so informally? â-would be pleased if I let her out without her blessing.â
âWhy wouldnât Shinobu-sama allow you to let someone out of a box?â Aoi rolled her eyes.
âItâs complicated. Iâm sure sheâll want to talk to you all about it once she comes back. Until then, Nezuko will be fine in here.â
The girls, though incredulous, let the subject drop for now. Although, they couldnât help but eye the box with suspicion. Once Tanjirou was settled in the infirmary, the butterfly girls dragged (Y/n) away to talk about the goings on of the last four years which soon devolved into hounding (Y/n) for her own stories to share, even Kanao had come by to sit and listen.
â...And thatâs how I helped the fishing village take care of the demon that was lurking in the sea.â
âTell us another one, (Y/n)-san!â The youngest girls pleaded, kicking their feet in the air behind them. They had migrated to lay flat on their stomachs as the stories progressed and watched (Y/n) recount her adventures with their heads propped up on their arms with rapt attention.
âIâm afraid that will have to wait for another time, itâs quite late you know.â
Everyone turned to the door to find Shinobu staring down at them. The youngest girls pouted a bit, trying to get a bit more time to stick around, but Shinobu held firm and directed them to their rooms.
âYouâll still be here tomorrow, right? (Y/n)-san?â Sumi asked from the doorway.
âI...â (Y/n) pulled at the sleeve of her uniform and subtly pursed her lips while trying to figure out how to proceed, to her surprise, Shinobu spoke up on her behalf.
âI promise youâll see her in the morning. Now of to bed. (Y/n) and I have much to discuss.â
The thought of having a prolonged conversation with Shinobu sent shivers through (Y/n)âs spine. Once all the girls were well out of sight, Shinobu redirected her attention to (Y/n).
âLetâs drop off your cargo first,â Shinobu said, motioning to the box sitting beside (Y/n), âIâve arranged a room and Kamado-kun has been wondering where his... sister, has been.â
âOf course.â (Y/n) stood, shouldering the box.
Apparently the room was rather far. (Y/n) felt as if the silence between them was slowly eating at her until she finally decided to speak. For better or for worse.
âYouâve taken all of this extraordinarily well,â (Y/n) commented, testing the waters.
âMm, Iâd like to hold off on any conversation until we drop off the demon. Use this time to gather any thoughts, if you have them that is.â
(Y/n)âs brow furrowed slightly, eyes narrowed. She was sure that was some kind of dig at her intelligence, but she held her tongue.
They dropped off Nezuko, (Y/n) and Tanjirou bid each other good night, and then (Y/n) was led to an all too familiar space, the lab.
Shinobu motioned for (Y/n) to sit at one of the less cluttered tables while she closed the door firmly behind them. (Y/n) would have been lying if she said she wasnât even just a tad bit concerned by the setting of this âtalkâ that was about to unfold. Finally, Shinobu took the stool across from her on the other side of the table. She laced her fingers together, using them to prop up her chin as her endlessly amethyst eyes bore into (Y/n)âs. That ghostly smile seemingly perfected after four years of separation, had (Y/n)âs hands clench into fists under the table.
âSo,â Shinobu began, her voice deceptively sweet, âwhen exactly do you think it was when you completely lost your mind?â
âExcuse me?â (Y/n)âs eye twitched.
âDefending a demon, offering up your own life for a demon to live... how insanely idiotic. I thought you were smarter than that. I suppose it had been.. four years, was it? Four years since you ran off. And I thought that was the most careless thing you could ever do. You really have outdone yourself!â
âStop,â (Y/n) had heard enough of these little jabs and she new well enough Shinobu could go all day as long as she hadnât changed too drastically in their time apart. However, Shinobu powered through.
âEveryone was devastated when you left you know. We were a family and you just up and left in the middle of the night without a word so soon afterââ After Kanae, âNow youâre putting everything on the line for some demon? Youâre a coward. A selfish coward.â
(Y/n) was really angry now. She stood up so fast her stool clattered to the ground behind her. She slammed her hands against the table and stared furiously into Shinobuâs placid expression, though she could detect a hint of a heated spark in those deep purple eyes.
âDonât act like youâre so innocent in all of this! You told me to leave! You want to judge me for trusting Nezuko with my life, fine! But I only did what you commanded of me when I left. You donât get to say I just fucked off because you think I didnât care enough!â
Shinobu had the nerve to chuckle, though no trace of humor was there, as she slowly rose to her own feet and assumed a similar stance over the table as (Y/n).
âDid you really think when I said that, when I told you to leave the lab, I meant I wanted you to walk out of my life?â Shinobu asked seriously.
âI didnât know what you wanted! You werenât the same person anymore! Donât try telling me that it wasnât what you wanted either, you never came looking for me. You never sent your crow. Tell me you werenât ecstatic when you woke up that morning and didnât have to deal with me anymore!â
Shinobu slapped her own hand against the table, a vein pulsed painfully under the skin of her forehead. She opened her mouth to retort, poisoned words ready to lash out with a flick of her tongue, but as luck would have it, a Kakushi nervously called from the other side of the door.
âKochou-sama, the treatments for the, uh, despiderfication of the slayers from Natagumo Mountain are ready to be carried out with your supervision.â
Shinobu closed her eyes, breathing in deeply before opening them again and looking significantly more drained.
âI see. Please inform the others that Iâll be there in a few moments.â
âRight away, Kochou-sama.â
As the footsteps pattered away, (Y/n) fixed her stool upright before heading in the direction of the door, assuming she and Shinobu were done talking, or screaming rather. (Y/n) was surprised to feel Shinobu grasp her hand as she tried to pass by.
âYou remember where your room is, right?â Shinobu asked, the undertones of her voice still taut with anger.
(Y/n) too tired to fight on, responded simply with a mute nod.
âI had the Kakushi clean it earlier today. Everything should still be as you left it.â
Shinobu let go of (Y/n)âs hand and it immediately felt cold. The Hashira opened the lab door and stepped out into the hallway, her back to (Y/n) as she made her last parting statement.
âIf you know what is good for you, you wonât step a foot outside of estate grounds without speaking to me first.â
âAnd if I donât?â (Y/n) asked just to be obstinate.
âThen I guess Iâll have to hunt you down for sport.â Shinobu quickly replied, turning to face (Y/n) just to show her how serious she was.
(Y/n) couldnât help the weak guffaw that left her lips. To hear such a threat delivered by such a soothing tone was practically oxymoronic.
Shinobu lingered for a moment longer before gliding off to see to her patients while (Y/n) turned down the opposite end of the hallway and traveled down a few more to find herself standing outside of her old room. She opened the door, the space was clean as Shinobu promised. She closed the door softly behind her, blocking off the light from the hall. There would be time to be sentimental in the morning. Right now, between the Mountain, the trial and the emotional battle with the Insect Hashira herself, (Y/n) was exhausted. She scooted her way into the freshly made futon and fell asleep with the nostalgic smell of wisteria petals drifting through her airways.
***
(Y/n) awoke around mid-morning to the sun shining through her window. She stretched and got dressed, her fingers pausing over the last few buttons of her uniform as she glanced over the desk.
The butterfly hair clip she had once worn with pride sat in front of her. It appeared to be left untouched by time. Not even a speck of dust adorned the colorful wings. She reached out to it, but her fingers curled just before she touched it. She pulled her hand back as a knock sounded on the door.
âYes?â
âItâs Aoi.â A voice called from the other side.
(Y/n) quickly took the last few steps needed to reach the door and slid it open to greet Aoi but before she could, the stern girl stepped inside and pulled the door shut again.
âWere you and Shinobu-sama fighting last night?â She asked hurriedly.
âWhere did you hear that?â (Y/n) answered the question with one of her own.
âThe Kakushi are partial to gossip. Now what did you do!â Aoi huffed, jabbing (Y/n)âs shoulder.
âWhy does it have to be me? Shinobu was the one who started it!â (Y/n) backed up, rubbing her shoulder.
âYou two better make up soon. It will hurt Naho, Sumi and Kiyo if they find out youâre still mad at each other,â Aoi crossed her arms over her chest.
âItâs not that easy, Aoi. Itâs been four years. Itâs not all going to go away overnight.â
âDo I have to do everything around here?â Aoi grumbled to herself, passing a hand over her face. âIâll help you, but you better try to be civil.â
âAoi, I donât need help. Iâm sorry that fight got back to you. If Shinobu and I talk again, I promise Iâll try harder to keep my temper in check, okay?â
Aoi sighed and shook her head, âFine. That wasnât what I had come to talk to you about anyway.â
âOh,â (Y/n) tilted her head, âthen what is it?â
âYour friends,â Aoi pinched the bridge of her nose, âtheyâre driving me crazy. I need you to get the blonde and the boar to participate in recovery training.â
âIâll see what I can do.â (Y/n) answered with slight reluctance. She knew just how difficult those two could be.
Aoi and (Y/n) arrived at the room that was being used for the boysâ recovery training. Tanjirou was already working hard, trying to catch Kanao in a game of tag, while Zenitsu and Inosuke watched from the corner with bitter disinterest.
âHey,â (Y/n) addressed the younger teens, âwhatâs the problem? Donât you guys want to get better? Stronger?â
âItâs pointless.â Inosuke weakly answered.
â(Y/n)-san, this training is too difficult!â Zenitsu cried.
(Y/n) dodged the weepy blondeâs attempts at hugging her and bonked him on the head with the side of her fist.
âI feel no sympathy for you. Aoi and the others are working really hard to get you back in fighting shape, the least you could do is put a little bit of effort in!â (Y/n) crossed her arms, âbefore you know it, Tanjirou will leave you both in the dust. Do you really want that?â
Zenitsu and Inosuke grunted, still refusing to budge. (Y/n) motioned for Naho to hand her a cup of medicated water and promptly splashed its contents all over the boys.
âWhat was that for?â Zenitsu screeched.
âWant revenge? Come take me on.â (Y/n) motioned to the table of cups.
Naho, Sumi and Kiyo made small sounds of excitement, trying to encourage the boys, but they just grumbled and walked back to the infirmary.
âYou guys are going to regret walking away!â (Y/n) called after them. âLet me know when you are done moping and want to get back to work!â
âOh my.â Shinobu giggled as she walked in, watching Zenitsu and Inosuke sulk past her.
Shinobu turned to observe the room, pausing at (Y/n). Her eyes flickered down at (Y/n)âs chest and stayed there long enough for the other slayer to notice.
âWhat?â (Y/n) had grumbled mostly to herself as she followed Shinobuâs gaze downward. Heat shot to her face immediately as she realized she had forgotten to finish buttoning her uniform after Aoi distracted her. It wasnât showing a lot, just her collar bones and a bit of her chest, but it was still jarring. With a strangled chirp, she quickly buttoned her uniform the rest of the way.
âOh please, no need to cover up on my account.â Shinobu easily teased, though she felt a bit embarrassed to have been caught staring. She wasnât entirely sure why her vision gravitated there to begin with.
After a few false starts, (Y/n) finally choked out, âwhat do you want?â
âI need Kanao and Aoi to help me gather more herbs for spider demon antidotes, not that itâs any of your business.â
âKochou-sama,â Aoi interjected before (Y/n) could retaliate, âKanao and I are helping Tanjirou complete his recovery training for the day. Iâve asked (Y/n)-san to fill in for us and she has readily agreed to take our place.â
(Y/n) gave Aoi a look, prompting the younger girl to pinch at (Y/n)âs side discreetly. A message to keep her mouth shut. Kanao simply blinked, twisting on the ball of her foot to dodge another one of Tanjirouâs lunges.
âVery well then, keep up (Y/n). I hope you still remember a thing or two about plants in that thick skull of yours,â Shinobu glided past (Y/n) to step out onto the engawa, âthough I wouldnât be too surprised if all of that knowledge fell out of your head along with your common sense.â
(Y/n) opened her mouth before shutting it firmly closed. Remembering that the younger girls were there and what Aoi had asked of her, she pursed her lips and silently fell into step beside the Hashira, walking with her to the nearby forest where the herbs they needed flourished.
âYou recall what Aralia Cordata looks like, correct?â Shinobu asked once they were well within the trees.
âYeah, kind of hard to miss that shrub if you know what youâre looking for.â (Y/n) groused.
âFine, fine. Donât come crying to me if you touch something poisonous.â
âI wonât. Wonât touch anything poisonous I mean. Because I know what Iâm doing.â
âAre you telling me that or are you just trying to reassure yourself?â
(Y/n) chose not to reply, instead she split off from Shinobu to one of the shrubs in question and began harvesting a few leafy tendrils from it. Before long, her basket was filled and she turned just in time to see Shinobu turn back to her own bush, pretending to examine one of the tendrils she had cut.
âYou know,â (Y/n) sighed as she stood back to her full height, âAoi only made me come here in her stead because that fight we had last night got back to her. She expects us to make up.â
âMm, I figured it was something like that,â Shinobu hummed, âI do believe that for once, she is too optimistic in that regard.â
âWell, you never did like admitting when you were wrong,â (Y/n) shrugged, âor saying youâre sorry. Itâs comforting to know you havenât completely destroyed your old personality.â
âAnd what exactly have I been wrong about, (Y/n)?â Shinobuâs forehead pulsed, âwhat exactly have I done that requires an apology?â
âYou lie to everyone Shinobu. You hide behind plastic smiles pretending to be someone youâre not to fill a void. Saying your fine and shrugging everyone off while holding them at arm's length. When I tried to talk to you, you pushed me away and told me to leave. You were dismissive, cold.â
(Y/n) wrapped her arms around herself as if a chilling wind overcame her. Continuing on, she spoke lowly before Shinobu could speak her denial.
âNot to say that I donât have my own fault in all of this. Even if I thought you really wanted me gone that night, I should have fought harder for you. I knew you were hurting, but I gave up and left anyway. That is something Iâve thought about a lot in our time apart and I regret it every day because you were worth fighting for.â
(Y/n) blew out a harsh breath of air, running a hand over her scalp she made her closing statement.
âIf there was one thing you were right about last night, itâs that Iâm a coward and Iâm sorry that I didnât try harder.â
(Y/n) chanced a look at Shinobuâs face. The Hashiraâs eyes rounded and her mouth was ever so slightly agape. The silence hung in the air until a sweet wisteria breeze swept through the trees and (Y/n) cleared her throat and looked away.
âSo if we could at least pretend to get along for the sake of the girls, I think Aoi would appreciate it.â (Y/n) added before reaching down to collect her basket. A sudden noise, like air being rapidly released through oneâs nose, came from behind (Y/n) and she paused in her movements to glance back at Shinobu who was looking down at the leaf she was worrying between her fingers.
âI... apologize, for pushing you away in such a way that made you think you had to exile yourself. It was also cruel of me to say you didnât care about us when I knew that you thought of this place as your home. I was trying to hurt you back and that was wrong of me. Iâm sorry.â Shinobu solemnly said.
Now it was (Y/n)âs turn to stare. Soon, Shinobu leveled a cocky smile and stood with her basket of leaves and a few other miscellaneous plants she gathered.
âLooks like you were wrong about my ability to apologize, hm?â She said.
âShut up. Donât ruin the moment.â (Y/n) smiled, reaching for her own basket.
The atmosphere surrounding the girls leaving the forest felt a lot more relaxed than it had upon entering.
***
Days turned into weeks and everything seemed so much better after. It was still awkward at times, but (Y/n) and Shinobu were finding their rhythm again. There was still a little hostility at times, but rather than avoid each other, they talked it out. It was almost frightening how in sync they were when they were working well together.
(Y/n) split her time between helping Shinobu with the slayers turned spiders and helping the younger girls train Tanjirou. She was elated by the boyâs progress as he finally managed to catch Kanao. She had noticed Zenitsu and Inosuke lurking nearby and gestured to the room. Now that they knew recovery training was possible and Tanjirou was leaving them in the dust, the rambunctious boys finally felt the need to catch up with their comradeâs progress.
Before long, the boys were well enough to continue the training on their own and (Y/n) found herself spending more and more time with Shinobu. They would spend hours talking or saying nothing at all, just enjoying each otherâs company while they worked away on medicines and poisons.
It didnât take long for (Y/n) to notice the difference. How Shinobu took up more than her fair share of space in (Y/n)âs thoughts. Even just catching sight of her across the garden was starting to make (Y/n)âs heart leap. On the occasion Shinobu would spot her sheâd smile and wave, making (Y/n)âs heart stop all together before kicking into overdrive. The lingering touches and whispered words Shinobu would share with her as they worked in the lab certainly didnât help either. Just when (Y/n) had thought they finally found their dynamic... Why was it changing again already?
(Y/n) was telling Naho, Sumi and Kiyo the story of how she met Tanjirou and Nezuko while she patted the demonâs head. Ever since Nezuko had woken up, the younger girls, though skittish at first, had grown to be fascinated and even enamored with her. As (Y/n) retold the tale, Nezuko humming happily at her side, Shinobu happened upon the group.
âIâm afraid weâll have to cut this session short. Tanjirou and the others are ready to get back out on the road now. Something about joining Rengoku-san on his next mission.â
âHow did I not here about this plan sooner?â (Y/n) frowned.
âThatâs a question best suited for Tanjirou to answer I suppose.â Shinobu replied rather emotionlessly, concerning (Y/n).
So while everyone else was getting ready to leave, (Y/n) pulled Tanjirou aside and asked him what was going on.
âI didnât tell you we were leaving because I hope youâll stay and continue to rebuild the relationships you have here, (Y/n)-san. I appreciate everything youâve done for Nezuko and I, and now I hope to return the favor.â Tanjirou smiled brightly.
âAnd how do you figure youâre doing that?â (Y/n) crossed her arms.
âBecause the longer you get to stay here, the more time you get to spend with Shinobu-san! I can smell that you two want to be together more now than ever.â
âYou and your nose I swear,â heat radiated off of (Y/n)âs cheeks, âI think you have intuition and that sense mixed up.â
Tanjirou merely laughed in response.
âSo, you guys think youâll really be okay without me? Youâll stay out of trouble?â
âDonât worry, (Y/n)-san! Weâll see each other again soon!â Tanjirou beamed.
(Y/n) smiled in return and they rejoined the send off.
âWhere did Shinobu-san go?â Tanjirou wondered.
(Y/n) looked around and sure enough, the Pillar was nowhere to be seen.
âShe must have had something urgent to attend to,â she answered, making a note to search for her later.
(Y/n) stood out in the garden until the loud group disappeared into the trees and their shouts could no longer be heard over the rustling of the leaves. She took a moment to stare out into the clear blue sky before returning inside.
(Y/n) was going to go look for Shinobu, but she wanted to go to her room to change her uniform first since Zenitsu had snotted all over it in his tearful goodbye.
She opened the door and was surprised to find Shinobu already inside. Shinobuâs back was turned to her as she quickly ran a sleeve over her face. She cleared her throat before facing back with a weak smile.
â(Y/n), forget something?â
âHuh?â (Y/n) blinked, still trying to process why Shinobu might have just been tearing up in her room of all places.
âThe others must be ready to leave now. You better pick up what you needed so they don't have to wait too long.â
âThey already left, Shinobu.â (Y/n) explained. âI hadnât planned on going with them.â
âOh.â Shinobu turned to look outside the window of (Y/n)âs room, hoping the blood that buzzed in her cheeks hadnât burned its way to her ears as well.
âShinobu, is something wrong?â (Y/n) tested.
âI just feel a bit silly now I suppose.â Shinobu admitted, bringing a slight smile to (Y/n)âs face with her honesty. âI thought you were gone again.â
âWell, I wouldnât leave without a proper goodbye, not again.â (Y/n) came up beside Shinobu, intending to give her hand a comforting squeeze when she felt something other than skin instead. Looking down she saw her old butterfly clip in Shinobuâs hand, a quick look at the empty spot at her desk confirmed it.
Shinobu noticed that (Y/n) had noticed and rose the hairclip up between them with a subdued exhale.
âYou know, every morning I wonder if it will be the morning you feel comfortable enough to wear this again.â Shinobu said, twirling the insect in her fingers. âWhen I thought you were gone and I saw this still sitting on your desk, it brought me back to places Iâd rather not think about.â
âIâm sorry,â (Y/n) rested her hand over the back of Shinobuâs haori, âI just havenât felt... I donât know, worthy of it? I didnât intend to make you feel bad.â
A small puff of air left Shinobuâs nose at the words. âIt isnât a matter of worth, itâs about whether or not you feel like you belong here again. Whether or not youâre comfortable here.â
âAgree to disagree.â (Y/n) joked. âBut if it makes you feel better, Iâm glad I get to spend more time here. Iâve been happier in these last few weeks than in the last few years.â
âIâm glad.â Shinobu watched a couple of butterflies flutter against the window before turning back to the garden. âAnd if you insist on it being a matter of worth, you are more than worthy. Itâs not even a question to me.â
âThank you.â (Y/n) simpered. Her breathing hitched slightly when Shinobu reached up to run her fingers through a loose lock of (Y/n)âs hair.
âWould you let me do your hair?â Shinobu asked softly.
âIâd like that.â (Y/n) whispered.
Shinobu guided (Y/n) back to the desk and sat her down on the chair. She freed (Y/n)âs hair from its plain hair band and quietly ran a brush through her locks with such softness that (Y/n) felt like she might fall asleep. Shinobu gathered the hair in her hands and styled it as she wished, clipping it together with the butterfly hair clip. Shinobu checked over her work, her hands resting on (Y/n)âs shoulders.
âYou look perfect.â (Y/n) shivered. She hadnât expected Shinobuâs lips to be so close to her ear. Neither had she expected the lips to ghost over her cheek in a light kiss.
âI just remembered I have a meeting I need to attend. Youâll help the girls with the infirmary wonât you?â
(Y/n) had almost forgotten how to speak but managed to pull it together. âOf course! Iâll, um, see you when you get back?â
âPerhaps,â Shinobu removed her hands from (Y/n)âs shoulders, âI wonât be back until late though.â
âOkay.â
A shy hug (in slightly awkward positioning due to the gross state of the Kinoeâs uniform, courtesy of Zenitsu) and Shinobu parted ways with (Y/n). (Y/n) met up with the girls in the infirmary and was almost immediately met with a chorus of cheers from Naho, Kiyo and Sumi when they noticed her hair. Aoi and Kanao smiled at the sight as well. A full day of caring for the infirmary made (Y/n) excited to finally get into bed for the night.
She awoke with a scream caught in her throat. Old demons had visited her in her sleep. As she worked to calm her heart, she noticed the light of the full moon streaming through her window. With a few more deep breaths she sat up from her futon and wrapped her haori around her shoulders.
Quietly exiting her room, she padded through the halls until she found her way to the kitchen, a smile pulled at her lips when she found Shinobu already there boiling water.
âRough night?â Shinobu asked. She was also in her bed wear, her hair hanging loose from its usual style.
âYes,â (Y/n) moved to stand beside her, âitâs been awhile since the last one I had.â
âHow did you deal with that when you were on the road?â
âI would buy little sacks of tea leaves as I went. On bad nights or whenever sleep eluded me Iâd boil up some water and try a new blend. Yours was always the best though.â
âI was already going to make you a cup, no need for flattery.â
âNo flattery here. Just the truth.â (Y/n) swore, making Shinobuâs smile just a tad fuller.
Shinobu finished preparing the cups and as (Y/n) took hers about ready to leave, the Hashira asked her to wait.
âItâs a full moon tonight. Want to watch the stars for a moment?â Shinobu asked.
âIâd love to.â (Y/n) nodded.
The pair walked outside along the engawa until they had a pleasant view of the full brightness of the moon. They sat along the engawaâs edge, letting their legs dangle as they sipped their tea in the drowning noise of cicada and cricket songs.
(Y/n) chanced a glance at Shinobu in her periphery and marveled at how the moonlight highlighted her skin to the point where she almost appeared to be glowing. The way it reflected off of her eyes was absolutely enchanting. (Y/n) forced her attention back on the sky. Though beautiful it seemed to pale in comparison to the girl next to her.
As her eyes traced over the larger craters of the moon, she thought back on an old saying she had read at one of the inns she had frequented. An old, battered collection of pages that she read through when sleep didnât come. She had read that particular work quite a few times.
She wondered if perhaps Shinobu had read it too. Though more likely the girl had her face buried in medical texts than anything else. (Y/n) then wondered, if perhaps she could get away with saying it. A confession without consequence, but on the off change that Shinobu was knowledgeable on the old text it could damage the progress they had made in healing their relationship. Perhaps it would be better to just enjoy the moment. (Y/n) took another sip of tea.
âThe moon is beautiful, isnât it?â
(Y/n) nearly choked on her tea, spluttering and coughing as she tried in vein to stop herself. Finally she managed to calm down only to notice how intently Shinobu was staring at her.
Had she meant that literally? Shinobu was looking at (Y/n) so expectantly, but it could easily just be because she had nearly blacked out from inhaling her tea!
â...It is.â (Y/n) finally answered hiding her face in her cup, looking at neither Shinobu nor the moon.
Another long silence filled by the chirps of insects enjoying the humid night air. (Y/n) had finished her tea and set her cup to her right, her free hand that had been resting between Shinobu and herself was soon covered by a cool and calloused touch.
(Y/n) shyly turned her head to meet the Pillarâs gaze and jumped a bit when her nose unexpectedly brushed against Shinobuâs.
âThe moon is beautiful tonight, isnât it?â Shinobu repeated barely above a whisper. She was not pulling away.
(Y/n) felt her throat dry and she wished she had just one more swallow of tea left. With a slight quiver in her lips, she responded. Doing her best to stay focused on the purple irises before her.
âYes,â she answered with a slight nod, careful not to bump head with Shinobu, âit is.â
â(Y/n)?â Shinobu called to her, cupping her face gently with the hand that wasnât already resting on top of (Y/n)âs.
âY.. yes?â
âWould you kiss me if I asked?â Shinobu murmured, filling (Y/n)âs senses with a dizzying wisteria scent. The slayer didnât even try to talk herself out of answering such a query as the thumb of Shinobuâs hand swiped the corner of her lips.
âYes.â She replied, nearly breathless already and her pupils blown wide.
â(Y/n), please kiss me.â
It was all too easy to lean in when they were already sitting so closely. The hand Shinobu had been using to cup her cheek weaved through the hair at the back of (Y/n)âs head, pulling her closer yet as their lips met a bit clumsily in buzzing, mind numbing bliss. (Y/n)âs free hand, the one not currently being clutched in a near death grip over the wooden floor, found home at the back of Shinobuâs neck, lightly massaging the skin there.
They broke apart a few times but the breaths they took were quick and few. Eventually they rested against each other while their abused lungs burned with a hunger for oxygen.
âI have wanted to do that for longer than Iâd like to admit.â Shinobu quietly confessed, twisting a lock of (Y/n)âs hair though her fingers.
âEven when we were fighting?â (Y/n) joked, rubbing the back of Shinobuâs neck with her thumb.
âStrangely enough, yes. There were times when I thought about doing it just to shut you up. Though I didnât dare allow myself to entertain the thought for long.â
(Y/n) chuckled and leaned in to steal another kiss, much less heated then the last few and much quicker as a chorus of surprised gasps made them pull apart and turn around.
âThey kissed! Theyâre kissing!â Sumi cheered while Aoi tried to quiet her and push her back into the mansion.
Sumi and Kiyo emerged from the doorway that Shinobu had left open when she and (Y/n) first came out into the moonlight and were immediately hounding them for confirmation.
âWe missed it! Do it again!â Kiyo pleaded.
âItâs like a fairy tale!â Naho cheered.
âYou three!â Aoi grumbled with embarrassment. âKanao, help me out here!â
Kanao looked between Aoi, the rowdy girls, then her sister and senpai, before settling on a nice golf clap of congratulations. This made Aoi lightly smack herself in the face and completely give up on trying to rein in the younger children.
âMy, what are you all doing up I wonder?â Shinobu smiled.
âWe wanted to watch the moon too Shinobu-sama! Aoi-san even made tea!â Naho clapped.
âBut itâs clear youâre, busy, with something and we should go back inside.â Aoi rushed.
âNonsense, itâs a lovely night. These things are best experienced with those you care about, donât you all agree?â
âYes!â Three excited voices readily agreed before wiggling in between the older girls with light blankets and their tea.
Aoi grumbled a half hearted reminder to be careful with the tea before sitting down beside (Y/n) with her own cup. Kanao took a seat beside Shinobu, lightly kicking her feet over the engawa as she started up silently at the moon.
They stayed up for hours, naming constellations, spotting shooting stars, and listening for the occasional loud croak of a far off frog in the thick of the cicadas and crickets.
Dawn wasnât too far off when Naho, Sumi and Kiyo fell asleep. (Y/n), Shinobu and Kanao each picked one up and returned them to their rooms. Aoi gathered the discarded cups and helped with the doors before bidding the older girls goodnight, Kanao trailing behind her.
âWhat a lively night. Iâm afraid chores will suffer tomorrow.â Shinobu mused as she walked (Y/n) back to her room.
âWeâll figure it out.â (Y/n) said, shyly brushing her hand against Shinobuâs and smiling when Shinobu laced their fingers together.
Once at (Y/n)âs room Shinobu raised (Y/n)âs hand to her lips with a smirk, planting a kiss on battle worn knuckles.
âThis is where I leave you. Iâll see you in a few hours.â
âWhy does that feel too long?â (Y/n) laughed quietly.
âIâm not sure, youâd think after four years of bitter silence a couple of hours would be a walk in the park.â Shinobu chuckled in return.
âI guess we just have a lot of time to make up for, huh?â
âMm, that is a plausible line of reasoning,â Shinobu hummed, a spark growing in her eyes, âmight I trouble you for one more kiss before I retire to my room?â
âI was hoping youâd ask.â
(Y/n) hardly got the words out before Shinobu was on her. Four kisses later and they pulled away with matching grins.
âIâll see you in my dreams.â Shinobu added one last peck before pulling away.
âAs will I.â
***
Well into the next morning (Y/n) awoke energized and ready to fight the world. She changed into a fresh uniform and pinned her hair with care, straightening the butterfly pin before rushing out of her room to begin her day with the young woman who had gifted it to her.

Blue. Everything was blue.
From the bubbles you exhaled to the sun streaming through the window. It was all blue.
Even though youâve been staying here for about a week, you still couldnât get used to waking up like this. Underwater. Trapped in a fairytale-like world.
Was this how Triton felt adjusting to the human realm?
âMom?â As if summoned by your thoughts, you felt Triton shift in bed next to you. The mattress slightly caving in as the young boy cuddled close to your side. âYou okay?â
ââŚyeah.â
You shouldnât be the one asking me that, you canât help but think. After all that happened last night, Triton should be the one more shaken up.
âŚWhat has this young boy gone through?
Gently, you reach down and run one of your hands through Tritonâs hair. Itâs silky and soft texture felt ethereal in the water-like environment. Like as if it was threads of gold tediously woven slowly by hand.
âMomâŚ.?â Your hand pauses as Triton lifts his head to look at you. Blue⌠It must be because you two were underwater but Tritonâs eyes were a striking bright blue today. Unlike their usual pale grayish version. Seems like everything would truly be covered in blue while you were here, âAre you sure youââ
âMy, oh my. This is unexpected.â
At the sudden new voice, you jolt out of bed. It seemed like you couldnât even get a bit of peace for a second in the place. However, as you take in the figure that was at the door you soon pause.
A butler? A human looking one at that. Was he perhaps a siren or mermaid? But he also had no tailâŚ
âHermes!â You feel yourself choke slightly at what Triton shouts. Hermes? As in the Messenger god? He looked nothing at all like the mythology books.
âGood day, Master Triton.â Hermes greets as Triton comes crawling out of bed and up to him. As you watch Triton start telling Hermes a story about something, you see Hermes' gaze shift from the young boy in front of him to you. Red⌠You are cut off guard as you notice Hermesâ eyes were a surprising color of scarlet red. As in the most ripe apples and cherries or that of a deep red ruby. However that wasnât what entranced you the most. No, it was the unusual spider web irises that accompanied those pits of red.
âBy the way, What brings you here, Hermes?â Thankfully at Tritonâs question, Hermes' gaze turns away from you. Allowing you to release a breath you didnât know you were holding. You werenât sure what it was but for some reason you felt like you had to be careful around him.
Hesitantly, you pull the covers off of your form and make your way out of bed next to Triton. You didnât want to get closer to Hermes but you also didnât want Triton to be left alone with the young man. Who knows what the god could be up to, âMaster Zeus wanted me to return a special package to you.â
âA package?â
Nervously, you let out a small gulp as Hermes disappears back into the hallway to grab the mysterious âpackageâ. Should you make a run for it? After all, it could possibly be dangerous. He couldâ
âHere it is.â
âAck!â You canât help but let out once you see what Hermes is holding in his arms. Did Zeus really order Hermes to go all the way to the mortal realm to grab that?
âAlexander the Great!â Triton cheers out as he grabs the ginormous king turtle from Hermes. Clearly happy to be reunited with his trusty stuffed animal. âOh! I know the perfect spot to put you.â
You watch as Triton races across the room to a corner filled with fluffy pillows and blankets. Even here it seemed he built those nest-like beds. You wondered where he got such a thing from.
âNow, My LadyâŚâ Startled by the warm breath on the shell of your ear, you feel yourself freeze before shakily turning to look at Hermes standing close next to you, âI have a package from Zeus for you as well.â
âO-Oh reallyâŚ?â You hesitantly say as you take a step away from the god. Was personal space not a thing for them?
âYes, now if you would follow me.â Hermes states, gesturing to the door.
âThank you but Iâm going to grab it later. I want to stay with Triton for now.â
âOh but my Lady. I insist.â
âIâm really finââ You are cut off as Hermes places his hands around your waist and proceeds to carry you out of the room. He was so fast you hardly had time to blink or even realize what he had done.
âWe will be right back, Master Triton.â Hermes shouts out to the young boy as he leaves the room and makes his way into the hallway. Finally able to realize what is going on, you grab at Hermesâ hands on your waist. Futility attempting to get him to let go of you.
âHey! Let go of me.â You shout out to the god. However, the only thing you got was a curious eyebrow raise in return.
âOh.â Hermes let out as if suddenly realizing something. Interested you pause at your fighting, only to soon regret it as you see a dangerous gleam in his eyes. As if a mischievous plan was forming in his head, âI apologize My Lady, I wasnât thinking. You must be used to the way Master Poseidon holds you.â
âH-HeyâEEepp.â
Instantly, in pure terror, you grab onto Hermes shoulders as he throws you lightly up in the air. Thankfully, you didnât squeal too hard as you had already known what he was possibly referring to about how âPoseidon holds youâ.
âNow, is this more comfortable, My Lady?â Hermes asks as he holds you bridal style in his arms. What in the world was with gods and their need to hold Humans, or possibly lesser beings, this way?
Now embarrassed, especially at how the maids and servants whisper to each other as you two walk by, you give up the need to fight Hermes. Knowing there was no chance in hell you would be able to get away anyways with how strong he was compared to you.
âLord Hermesââ
âPlease, just call me Hermes.â The messenger god states cheerfully as he cuts you off. As if he totally didnât just kidnap you.
After letting out a small sigh in frustration, you continue, âAlright, Hermes. Where are you taking me?â
âJust to the main foyer, My Lady.â
At Hermes' simple minded answer, you feel your eyebrow twitch slightly. If you werenât already afraid of the god, you bet you would have smacked that smug look off his face by now. You could clearly see now how Hermes was the Son of Zeus, âOkay⌠So, Why are you taking me there?â
âTo meet someone special that Master Zeus invited.â
.
..
âŚ
You swore to god.
âWho is that special someone?â You state, making sure to emphasize on your question this time. As if sensing your frustration, Hermes, clearly pleased with your reaction, smiles slightly.
âScylla. You are meeting Lady Scylla.â
ââŚScyllaâŚ?â
You feel yourself pause at the name, an odd sense of familiarity blooming in your brain. You had definitely heard that name before but⌠whereâŚ.?
âScylla, as in Scylla and Charybdis.â Hermes explains, his smile growing wider as he takes in the confused look on your face. As you ponder the second name, it finally hits you about why it had all sounded so familiar.
Scylla was a legendary monster in Greek mythology that lived on one side of a narrow channel of water, opposite to her counterpart Charybdis.
Scylla's description varied from tale to tale but she was often described as a female monstrosity. Her lower body consisted of six serpent-like heads on long snaky necks, each head having a triple row of shark-like teeth. Then, on her stomach were the heads of ferocious dogs.
However, it wasnât her appearance or the fact that she was a monster that startled you the most. No.
Scylla wasnât always a monster. No, she used to be a nymph. There are two tales that explained as to why Scylla was turned into a monster in the first place. One of them being, as well as the most frightening one to you, was thatâŚ
âŚAmphitrite was jealous of Scylla.
âW-why am I meeting with Scylla?â You questioned outloud to Hermes. Whose grin only seemed to grow once you asked him.
âPardon me but it is much more fun if you find out yourself.â Hermes explained casually as he stops in front of a room. He wasnâtâŚ
âWaitââ
âHave a fun time, My Lady.â
And with that, Hermes proceeded to shove you in the room and close the doors behind you. That bastard⌠you knew you shouldnât trust him.
âAre you Lady (y/n)?â
Freezing, you look across the room in the direction of the voice. There was no doubt that it was Scylla. But,âŚ
You find yourself pausing as you gaze down at her abdomen.
âPomeranians?â Instantly, after the word slips out, you cover your mouth. Great going there, (y/n).
Though, it wasnât just the fact that the supposed âferocious dogsâ were sophisticated Pomeranian that caught you off guard. The lady, well ex-nymph, before you looked about in her late 50s and was dressed quite modestly. Yet also very sophisticated.
âYes, they are Pomeranians.â Scylla answers, seeming to take a pause as she sips from her teacup before continuing, âNow, as I asked before, Are you Lady (y/n)?â
âOh, I apologize. I am Lady (y/n).â You answer back, not missing how Scylla eyebrows slightly twitch.
ââŚIt seems I have a lot of workâŚâ You hear Scylla mumble lightly under her breath as she proceeds to shake her head. What was she talking about?
ââŚPardon?â
âOh, nothing. Please take a seat, Lady (y/n).â
Carefully, you make your way across the room to sit at the table. As you do so, you donât miss the chance to notice how extravagant the room was. Not only was it made of marble and intricate gold carvings like the rest of Tritonâs Manor but it also had a beautiful ceiling mural and, next to where the table that Scylla was sitting, a wall to wall and floor to ceiling grand window view.
As you take a seat down across from Scylla, you have to hold yourself back from gasping as you could now take in the full view. There were arrays of colorful Coral reefs and plants. Some that you have never ever seen, perhaps they only grew in the realm of the gods and were special in some way. However, it was past the Coral reefs that were placed outside the window that gained your interest. Far out in the horizon, stood what looked like a grand underwater city that looked fresh out of a futuristic sci-fi movie with its intricate buildings and colorful lights.
âAhem.â At Scyllaâs cough, you finally turn your attention back to the older woman, âI will now formally introduce myself. I am Scylla, a former nymph that worked for Lord Poseidon. As well asâŚ
âŚTritonâs former Nanny.â
âI see.â You let out as you take in the information the woman has told you. It seemed like just how the other gods were different from mythology so was Scylla. But, you couldnât write off anything about Scylla yet. You didnât know her full intentions on accepting to come to see you here today. âCan I ask why you came to see me today, Lady Scylla?â
âOf course.â Scylla answers as she carefully places her teacup back down on its plate and looks at you, âI am not here to hurt you but rather to help you. My first duty in coming here is informing you about everything you need to know. From Master Tritonâs childhood to Lady Amphitrite nature, I am hoping to tell you everything possibly important I have seen in over the millennia I have worked for the family.â
Now you understand why she was here. If you didnât understand the inner workings or secrets of the family, it could honestly get you killed. And that could count for either Poseidon or Amphitrite. It also makes sense why Zeus specifically sent her as he still had the intentions of you replacing Amphitrite as Poseidonâs wife. So, knowing what makes Poseidon tic would be crucial.
âMy second reason for coming here is to teach you the proper etiquette of the gods.â
You feel your thoughts come to a screeching halt at her statement, âHuh?â
âIâm going to be honest with you, Lady (y/n),â Scylla vocalizes as she shakes her head, âSince you are a human, you are considered at the bottom in our realm. If the citizens of Atlantis donât like you, they will kill you. If you disrespect a god or goddess, they will kill you. If someone wants your spot on the throne, they will kill you. If you arenât strong or smart enough, you will get killed. Respect, etiquette and knowledge are the three things that will keep you alive hereâŚâ
Scylla pauses as she looks around to make sure that no one was nearby to hear what she would say next.
âLady (y/n).â Scylla starts as she surprisingly reaches across the table to hold your hands. âI know of Lord Zeusâ plan to make you the next queen. As a former Nymph, where my kind is often taken advantage of by gods just like humans, I beg of you. Do not. Follow. Zeusâ. Plan. It will surely get you killed. To him, if you die, He will simply take another human or some other god to take your place. All he wants is Amphitrite off the throne.â
It wasnât as if you already didnât guess that from Zeus. You already knew, deep down in an unsettling feeling in your stomach, that he considered you lesser than himself. No matter how kind he seemed to act to you.
Also it wasnât as if you were trying to seduce Poseidon or become the next queen in anyways. Your main objective, as it always had been, was to protect and care for Triton.
You are brought back to reality as Scylla lets go of your hands and stands up, âCome. We donât have much time.â
âRight.â Instantly, you follow the older woman as she makes her way across the room. You didnât know where she could possibly be going but followed her anyway. âA frame?â
You look curiously at, what you guessed to be, the decorative frame of a mirror. You had no idea why you two have specifically stopped here. Was the frame important in some way, like some sort of secretive family heirloom?
However, you soon doubt that previous guess of yours as suddenly, as if bent by Scyllaâs mind and will, the inside of the mirror starts to glow. It continued to glow as the light slowly trickled to the rest of the mirror and once it was fully completed, Scylla moves out of the way and gestures to it.
âYou want me to walk up to it?â You ask Scylla as you make a small step to the blinding mirror. Slowly as you grow closer, you reach out your hand to slightly graze its surface. Only to realize it wasnât a surface at all. âW-Woah!â
You are caught off guard as you are suddenly pulled into the mirror by a great force. Hissing, your eyes stung by the ever so bright light. What is happening? You thought Scylla was going to explain to you about the family history. Could she possibly have lied and tricked you?
Amphitrite⌠Daughter of Nereus and DorisâŚ
âW-Who goes there?â You shout out, startled by the booming voice. âWere you the one who pulled me in here?â
However, as if the voice couldnât hear you, it continues itâs speech and you are suddenly placed into a white blank room.
One of 50 sisters, known as the NereidsâŚAmphitrite grew up as any other goddessâŚ
An ancient stone wall suddenly appears right in front of you. Itâs drawings and paintings seeming to depict the beautiful Nereids.
âŚHowever, that was far from the truthâŚ
All of sudden the paintings come to life, some of the Nereids were killing and even poisoning their sisters.
âŚAll of those sisters were filled with greed⌠greed to be ever so powerful like their father and it only seemed to grow when it was announced that Poseidon would choose one to be his queenâŚ
The stone changes once more, completely wiped clean except for one lone woman in the center. A shining crown placed on her head.
âŚAnd Amphitrite came out on top. With most of her sisters dead or banished by her, she was now the lone survivor to gain all the power she desiredâŚas the new goddess and queen of the seaâŚ
âŚHowever,âŚPoseidon wasnât how she expectedâŚ.
You are startled as the full white room, even the ground you were standing on, changes. The room now taking on an elegant bedroom. A grand circle bed was placed in the center of the room. With Pillows and silk blankets scattered around in it.
A sudden loud creak catches your attention and you spin your head around. Caught off guard at who was in front of you.
âWhat are you doing here?â Poseidon's voice booms out as he glares daggers at you. His form no longer dressed in his usual attire but instead one made for bed.
âI-Iââ âYou canât possibly expect nothing to happen on our wedding night.â
Taking a step away from Poseidon, you turn and realize he wasnât talking nor glaring at you. Instead, his piercing gaze was directed at a woman sitting on the bed. A simple yet sexy nightgown covering her form.
You have never seen her before with her long and deep colored scarlet hair, with her sea green eyes and pale clear skin. But you could at least guess who she was.
âAmphitrite. Leave.â Poseidon orders, as he turns away from the woman to shrug off his shirt, âI wonât be asking again.â
The woman only giggles in response, seeming not to take Poseidonâs threat seriously as she makes her way up to the male.
âOh godââ You canât help but let out. Quickly covering your eyes as you see Amphitrite loosen her strap of her nightgown, causing the article of clothing to fall to the floor. What was the woman thinking?!
Even with your heart practically beating out of your ears, you hear Poseidon let out a deep sigh and the loud sound of heavy footsteps making their way past you. From what you guess, this was a memory of the past and the two couldnât see you.
âW-Where are you goingââ Amphitrite voice is cut off as the door is shut with a loud bang. It is quiet for a moment. Yet it was only a moment. As soon afterwards, the loud banging and breaking sounds ring out around the room as Amphitrite takes her anger out on the area around her. âThat fucking piece of shit!! Iâll show youââ
Amphitrite voice is once again cut off. Yet this time not by Poseidon but instead the blinding light as the voice changes the scene. Deeming it safe, you uncover your eyes and take in the new scene around you. You were no longer in Poseidonâs bedroom but seemed to still be in the palace. This time the bed was a simple queen one, itâs sheets covered in blood that scared you for a moment. That is until another item gains your attention.
A baby crib.
Amphitrite was furious about how she couldnât get Poseidon to bend to her will. She believed that he should be groveling at her feet and craving for her affectionsâŚ
âŚThis only got worse after she found out she was pregnant with an heir that Poseidon didnât care forâŚ.
Startled by what the voice was saying, you take a step towards the baby crib. That means this crib wasâŚ
You let out an audible gasp as you lean over the crib. An ever so familiar pair of pale blue eyes staring up at you. It was baby Triton.
Damn, you wished you had your phone on you to take a picture of this moment. He was just all too adorable.
At the pregnancy of the child, Amphitrite left it in the hands of a nanny. Not wanting to bother with a child that will only hold her back.
âLord Poseidon. I beg of you, Please do not hurtââ
âSilence.â
That voice⌠Hastily, you make your way across the room to the door that was slightly ajar. Standing outside was Poseidon, a couple of his attendees and Scylla. Scylla, who seemed to be back when she was a nymph, was on her hands and knees, begging something out of the god.
âTch.â Poseidon lets out, seeming annoyed. You freeze as you see the male grab his trident and make his way towards the door.
âLord Poseidon, Pleasâ Ack!â As Scylla tries to bring her head up and grab onto Poseidon to stop him but before she could do so an attendee stomps on her back. Stopping her in her tracks.
âDo not come in.â
You back away as Poseidon makes his way into the room, shutting the door behind him. He wasnât planning toâŚ
You cover your ears as a loud screeching sound fills the room. It was coming from Poseidonâs trident as he drags the blade across the floor, Leaving long scratching indinents in the marble floor.
This is in the past, (y/n). You forcibly remind yourself as you watch Poseidon get closer to the crib. Triton is still alive, heâs not going to die here.
You freeze as the screeching sound stops and Poseidon lifts his trident. Uncovering your ears, you stare, mind boggled, at what happens next.
Poseidon⌠was whistling.
Was he attempting to soothe the baby before he killed it? What sort of Psycho was heâ
âAh! Stop!â You shout out as Poseidonâs trident comes barreling down towards the crib. He was going to actually killâ
Suddenly, Poseidonâs arm comes to a screeching halt.
âBo ba ba booo.â Triton babbles away, seeming to attempt to imitate the song Poseidon had just whistled out.
.
..
âŚ
âTch.â Poseidon imbeds his trident in the marble before picking Trident up by the back of his onesie.
Thatâs not how you were supposed to carry a child! You could accidentally cause it to choke itself.
As you make your way closer to the two, worried about Tritonâs safety, Poseidon once again whistles out. His gaze trained to the babyâs face.
âBoooo ba ba boo.â Triton lets out again, seeming to try his best to imitate Poseidon. Giggling slightly at the end as he reaches out towards his father and grabs a piece of Poseidonâs hair.
âYouâre doing it wrong.â Poseidon mutters out as he brings his other hand up to Triton, the time adjusting his grip so that he was holding the baby by the armpits.
Poseidon whistles out once more. This time going slightly slower for the baby to listen.
Was this guy seriously attempting to teach a baby how to sing a song when he tried to kill it only seconds ago? Plus it was a baby for crying out loud.
âHey! Get back here!â
The door comes flying open with a startling bang as Scylla trips her way into the room.
âI warned you!â Scylla screams out as the attendees' sword comes barreling down at her. However, thankfully, it never hits her. âL-Lord Poseidon-nâŚâ
You cover your mouth as the attendee falls to the ground, his body separated in half by the trident Poseidon had just thrown.
âSilence.â Poseidon orders out to the rest of the attendees, who quickly release Scylla and back away. âYou, Lady. Come here.â
âM-me?â
Scylla freezes as she sees the look Poseidon gives her. About how she should know better than to make him repeat himself. Frantically, she makes her way over to the two.
âWhatâs its name?â Poseidon asks Scylla. Who grows pale as she watches as Triton pulls at Poseidonâs hair. Yet, surprisingly, the god of the sea doesnât flinch nor remove the annoyance, allowing the baby to continue what it was doing.
âI-uh. L-Lady Amphitrite never gave the child a name...â
Silence. You let out a small gulp as you anxiously take in the scene in front of you. Poseidon definitely wasnât pleased with this development.
âPardon me, M-My Lord. May I suggest something-g?â Scylla stutters out as she anxiously twiddles her thumbs. She seemed to be on the brink of collapsing from stress and anxiety.
âSpeak.â
âWhyâŚWhy donât you name the boy?â
Once again silence. However, it wasnât as tense as the previous one. It seemed Poseidon was truly pondering Scyllaâs suggestion.
âTriton.â Poseidon booms out. âHis name will be Triton.â
âAn E-Excellent choice, My Lord.â Scylla compliments. Yet, even though Poseidon accepted her suggestion, she didnât seem pleased. âA-Another thing, My Lord. You arenât supposed to hold a baby in that manner.â
âHuh?â
Quickly, Scylla attempts to cover her mistake, âI-I mean-n! You can hold the boy however you want. It just that isn't the most comfortable manner! You donât have to listen to what I suggest. Please forgive me.â
You are surprised once more as Poseidon gives Scylla the baby. Seeming to tell her to show him how to hold Triton without wanting to ask. You have grown to notice that his pride seems to get in the way of things a lot of the time.
It eerily, in a way, reminded you of what happened last night when Poseidon listened to your own suggestion. Would he act in a fit of rage this time as well? Could this be how Scylla gotâ
âBah!â Triton shouts out, startling you out of your thoughts. Currently, Poseidon was attempting to cradle Triton the way Scylla had shown him. The nanny fiddled with her fingers as she worriedly watched the two.
âBooo ba ba boooâŚ. Boo boo boo boooo⌠booooâŚ.â Triton babbles out, this time somewhat replicating the song accurately.
âHeh.â
Heh? You are startled at the sound Poseidon makes. Did he just laugh slightly?
Inching closer, you take in the look on Poseidonâs face as he looks down at Triton. As if his cold exterior had cracked ever so slightly, you could see a sliver of fondness in Poseidonâs cold blue eyes. A look that showed love for his newborn son.
âŚYet, you thought Poseidon didnât feel that way about Triton.
âMy Lord.â Poseidon's fondness quickly disappears as he turns to look at Amphitrite who stood at the door. You could see an ever so slight smirk on her face. âI didnât realize you wanted to visit our son. You should have told me, I would have come with you.â
Oh. Was it becauseâŚ
âZeus and Hera wanted to see the child.â Poseidon lies to Amphitrite as he gives the child back to Scylla. Seeming to believe her husband, Amphitrite's smile soon turns to a scowl.
âI see.â She bitterly spits out before walking away. Not wanting to stick around for any longer.
Once Amphitrite footsteps are no longer heard, Poseidon turns back to Scylla. Whispering in a low voice so that the attendees canât hear.
âIâll be back tomorrow. Same time. Donât be late and donât tell anyone.â
With that Poseidon walks away, his attendees quickly chasing after him. As Scylla seems happy with the new found development, hugging Triton tightly to her chest as she showers him in praises, you⌠didnât know what to think.
YouâŚ
âŚCouldnât wrap your head around why your chest aches so much when you watch the two.
âŚWhat in the world happened between Triton and Poseidon that changed themâŚ?
Author Note: Just in case people didnât see my notice about this yesterday. I decided to split Ch. 8 into two parts, due to it revealing a lot of things. So the second part will be up tomorrow (Friday). If there is any confusion, please feel free to ask or comment. I will be checking my tumble a lot today since I know this is a crazy chapter.

(The Bad Batch) Crosshair x Reader: Absence
(Authorâs Note: I usually steer clear of angst, but this sort of just happened. Yâall are going to hate me after this. Oh whaaale)
warnings: some angst, Bad Batch episode 1 spoilers.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
You released a sigh into the air, the sound breaking the lonely silence that had settled since you decided to lay down for a while. You half-expected to hear some sort of response- a mumble from Tech, a laugh from Wrecker, chatter from Omega, or a sigh from Hunter- but the room fell into stillness once more.
As you lay on your side, arms encircling a familiar pillow, you gazed at the opposing wall. This was the first moment you had to yourself since the events that transpired on Kamino. Youâd been busy at the front of the ship assisting the others or simply surrounding yourself with them to keep certain feelings at bay.
But just for a little while, you finally decided to let yourself have the time to process and to just feel. Without the company of the others to keep you occupied, Crosshairâs absence was more jarring. It wasnât something youâd been able to ignore in the first place, of course. Even in a room full of your squad, you found yourself searching for him or expecting him to be hovering nearby only to remember that wouldnât be the case.
Another sigh rose into the air, and you shifted to lay on your other side facing the wall of the bunk. The pillow still held stale traces of his scent, and you hungrily breathed in what was left and hoped with each inhale that it wouldnât fade. You thought back to the last time you were near him before things went from bad to worse.
Crosshair placed himself on the bench, rubbing his head in frustration. You watched him with worry. He hadnât been himself since this Order 66 was given. Youâd seen him at odds with Hunter and growing increasingly agitated as time went by.
Omega slid onto the bench beside him, her eyes mirroring your concern. Although somehow, her look was more sympathetic, as if she knew what was happening to him. She rested a hand on his shoulder and spoke quietly. You decided to remain at a small distance for another moment before going over to talk to him.
Moments later, a shock trooper approached the cell. âCT-9904, youâre coming with us.â
Your eyes widened as the cell shield went down. Hunter quickly placed himself in front of the sharpshooter in protest. âOh, no, no, no,â he said, holding his hands up. âWe stay together.â
The trooper wasted no time in hitting Hunter in the stomach with the butt of his blaster, evoking a grunt as the sergeant crumbled to his knees.
âHey!â you shouted, darting forward. âCut it out! No one is leaving this cell alone. If he goes,â you gestured to Crosshair. âI go.â
âCT-9904 was summoned, not you. Now stand down!â The trooper raised his blaster to strike you this time, and you readied yourself to fight back when you felt a firm hand grasp your wrist.
You looked to see Hunter standing to his feet, giving you a warning look. For a moment, you thought that maybe it would be better to stand down and not cause more trouble, so you relaxed your shoulders. However, that changed the second Crosshair stood from the bench and started walking toward the troopers without so much of a glance or word to any of his comrades.
âWait! No, I canât just stand here and-â you caught Hunter off-guard and tore your arm free to hurry after Crosshair. âWhat are you doing?â
âIâve been summoned, _________. Good soldiers follow orders.â
âBut Cross,â you murmured, hot tears spilling down your cheeks as you reached for his gloved hand. âIâm scared. Donât leave.â
At the use of his nickname, his face changed. The bridge of his nose scrunched slightly in confusion before his eyes softened and replaced the challenging gaze with a tender regard that he usually saved for you. It was like whatever was clouding his mind was shaken away for a moment.
âI donât have much of a choice,â he told you, shooting a wary glance at the troopers that surprisingly were paused at the entrance to the cell. Then, his expression hardened once more as he released your hand and walked into their custody.
âNo! Crosshair, wait! You lunged forward, but a large hand grabbed your shoulder. âWrecker, let me go!â
â__________,â he said, his voice low and broken at your distress. âItâs not gonnaâ change anything.â As Crosshair was led away, you jabbed a finger at the guards. Â
âHeâs not their guinea pig! You hear me?â
They were out of sight, door sliding shut behind them, and you were left standing there breathing heavily. You slammed a fist against the wall and turned to see the others watching with pained expressions. Omega still covered her mouth with her hands in shock.
âIâm sorry,â you told them, ducking your head. âSorry to make a scene. I didnât mean to make things worse, but...â
âNo,â Hunter said. âI understand. WeâŚâ he gestured to the rest of the group. â we understand. We just donât want to see you get hurt.â
Things quieted down after that. You placed yourself on the bench where Crosshair had previously been seated and waited.
You rolled onto your back, staring at the top of the bunk as the memory came to a conclusion in your mind. That was the last time youâd seen the real Crosshair. The one that youâd seen in the hangar on Kamino was not your love. Your teary eyes met his cold ones, and though he didnât fire at you, you didnât see much of a reaction in his expression.
A knock on the door caused you to stir again. You turned your head to call whoever was at the door inside the quarters. The door slid open to reveal a form much shorter than you expected. Â
  â_________?â
âOmega,â you said, putting on a soft smile to let her know she was welcome. âDo you need something?â
She gazed at you sympathetically, returning your smile kindly. âI just wanted to see how youâre doing.â
âIâm alright,â you replied. âI justâŚâ
She approached the bunk, eyeing the small signs of Crosshair all around including the pillow in your arms. âYou miss him.â
You tucked your nose back into the pillow to breathe in his scent once more. It was nearly gone. Your eyes watered a little at the realization. âYeah, I guess I do.â
She rested a hand on your shoulder, much like sheâd done to him in the prison cell at Kamino. âThe Crosshair you know is in there somewhere. Itâs that chip. Weâre going to get him back.â
You looked to her as her smile grew, looking less concerned and more hopeful. It was contagious because you were starting to feel that glimmer of hope in your chest and smile in return. âIâm sure youâre right.â
âIn the meantime, I know itâs hard.â
You hummed in agreement, a new memory coming to mind. Your smile turned into a chuckle, earning an intrigued look from Omega. âI was just thinking about this one time. Before we got together, Crosshair and I went to a market for a supply runâŚâ
âOh hey, that place looks like itâs got some decent stuff,â you said. Crosshairâs eyes followed your gesturing hand to a fruit stand, the toothpick between his lips twirling idly. He didnât give a verbal response, only following you as you veered off the main path to approach. An elderly woman with a large sun hat smiled as you paused to get a good look at everything.
âWell hello there,â she greeted you. âCan I help you with anything?â
âHello! And yes, could I get a dozen of these?â you gestured to the baskets of fruit. âAnd a dozen of those?â
âMost certainly, dear,â she nodded. As she bagged up the product, you turned to see Crosshair hovering less than a foot behind you. He surveyed your surroundings with those keen eyes of his before he noticed you looking at him.
  âWhat?â
âNothing.â You grinned. âSee anything? Any separatist droids perhaps?â
He plucked the toothpick from his mouth to reply. âVery amusing, ________. I havenât seen anything except for some shady pirate staring at you.â
âReally?â your grin quickly faded into a grimace as your eyes flickered to the side. âWhere?â
âBehind me.â Crosshair returned the toothpick to the spot between his teeth. âIâm blocking you from his view.â
  âOh.â You straightened up. âThanks.â
âHere you are,â the elderly woman stated, handing you one bag of fruit and Crosshair the other. You handed her the credits. âI also just wanted to say what an adorable couple you two make!â She plucked a single flower from a nearby bouquet and handed it to Crosshair. âFor the young lady!â
You wanted to duck your head in embarrassment while Crosshair rolled his eyes. Still, to your surprise he didnât even bother to correct her. He merely accepted the flower in silence and turned to you, his hand hovering for a moment before he settled on tucking the flower behind your ear.Â
âBye!â You waved at the lady as the two of you walked away.
â...Later on, I caught him looking at me when I had the flower tucked behind my ear. I knew then that he had feelings for me, just like I did for him.â
âSo heâs always been a little...difficult?â Omega ventured.
You laughed. âOh yes, but it was always an act. Sometimes, he made it easy to see past that to the big heart underneath.â You scooted off the bunk, releasing your hold on the pillow so it fell back in its spot, and proceeded to smooth out the blanket. âThank you, Omega.â
She looked confused. â For what?â
  âThe talk. It really helped.â
âOh, yeah, no problem.â She smiled. âIâve come to think of the squad as family, and...I donât like to see my family hurting.â
âI think of this squad as family too,â you agreed. â And Iâm glad youâre a part of it, kid. Letâs see if Tech needs anything up front.â
The two of you became lost in chatter as you headed for the doorway. You paused to take one final look at the empty quarters and at Crosshairâs bunk that youâd left as neat as he had. A genuine smile spread across your face as you turned off the light and let the door close behind you.

Bakugo x Reader: Choose Me [Pt. 1]
[LOTS OF ERROR; TO BE REVISED]
âHEADLINE: PRO HERO â DYNAMIGHT ANNOUNCES HIS MARRIAGEâ
It was fucking news to everyone, heck even the No.1 Pro Hero busted through his office doors demanding an explanation. It was so out of the blue as the picture of him together with another girl at a restaurant, with him reaching out touching the womanâs cheek spread like wildfire all over the internet. No one knew he had been dating, no one even knew he was interested in others. Literally everyone thought⌠Bakugo Katsuki was after you. You who had been there for him since high school, never in his personal space but always was with him, never failing him and was always doing your best to be there for him whether he needed you or not. You always did your best not to let your feelings get known specifically to him, so when others noticed him warming up to you and then inviting you to his agency (which he was just planning on having and building) right after fucking graduation and then the event where the villain almost had you and he literally went full murder mode just to retrieve you, everyone thought for sure you guys were going to end up together. Soâ
âKacchan!â Slamming his palm on Midoriyaâs face, Bakugo gritted his teeth âYouâre way too close, you damn nerd!â
âBakugo-kun! What is this? Is this true?â Uraraka asked, showing him the article on her phone
âHa? What part of it do you not understand, Round cheeks? Itâs exactly whatâs written there!â He growled
âBut⌠Not even we know you were going out, youâre always at work!â Kirishima reasoned
âAH! SO ANNOYING! GET OUT OF MY CASE YOU IDIOTS! ITâS EXACTLY WHAT IT MEANS! NOW FUCK OFF!â He snapped, gritting his teeth in frustration
âKatsuki!â A voice called out to him from behind, everyoneâs attention turned to you as you simply smiled, holding your phone close to your chest. The way you were gripping it tight didnât go unnoticed by many, especially Bakugo
âCongratulations!â You grinned and Bakugo just stared at you for a second before scoffing and looking to the side
âYeah⌠WhateverâŚâ
The silence that followed was thick but no one knew what to say. Still true to your role however, you were still his sidekick, and his second in command of the agency. You still had work to do.
âAh thatâs right minna! Itâs still noon, you shouldnât be flooding here unless you have businesses to attend to! Back to your agencies you go!â You ushered them out
Please. No more gazes of pity. Please get out. Or else⌠I wonât make it throughâŚ
â(Name)-sanâŚâ Midoriya looked at you with concern in his eyes as you slowly closed the door of Bakugoâs office. Standing there in front of everyone, you took a deep breath and hardened your smile. You needed to make it. Just until the end of the day⌠please
âWe can talk later⌠For now, you guys have workâ You bid them all goodbye âIâll see you laterâ
Without even giving them a chance to reply, you retreated back to Bakugoâs office, unintentionally slamming the door harder than expected
âOiâ
You visibly flinched when he called out to you. You really werenât in the mood to talk to him, more or less stand to be in the same room as him. You could feel yourself starting to break little by little
âWhoops sorry, didnât mean to slam that harder than intended. Oh by the way, you havenât done your patrol yet, right?â You laughed, going over to your desk and rearranging the papers âI can take over the shift for you, I need some fresh air anywaysâ You said and by the time you finished talking you were already out the door
Bakugo glanced at the huge open windows lined up in his office room, literally placed right behind where his office desk stood parallel to
âFresh air my assâ He grumbled
EARLIER THAT DAYâŚ
âHA?! AINâT NO WAY IâM DOING THAT SHIT! GO DIE!â
âB-but Dynamight! The aristocratâs daughter is in danger! The only way we can catch the villain that has been stalking her is if we announce a public wedding!â The higher ups tried to reason with him
âTHEN FIND ANOTHER RICH ASSHOLE FOR THIS SHIT OR BETTER YET SET CCTVs OR HERO AND BODYGUARDS ON STAND-BY TO GUARD THE BITCH! FUCKING THINK!â
âA-ah, weâve already set those up, but we need a pro hero on her side since the initiation will surely happen at the wedding and the daughter specifically requested you to guard her!â
He honestly feels disgusted by that information
Keh! Bitch is a fan, fucking great
Then again, this was a huge group of villains theyâre talking about. Sighing in annoyance, he eventually agreed. Now, how was he going to explain thisâ
âAh by the way, Dynamight, you canât speak a word about this to anyone. The villains have a member that can camouflage and has another that has intense hearing from miles away. Strictly not a word until the mission is doneâ
BACK TO PRESENTâŚ
A ring coming from his phone brought him back to reality. He fished his phone out from his pocket and looked at who had texted him.
âFather said we should meet up at X Restaurant, see you there <3â
Staring at the door where he last saw your retreating figure, Bakugo took a deep breath and shouted in frustration
âFUCKING SHIT!â
At your part, jumping from roof to roof, you tried your best to do the patrol as diligent as possible. You needed to clear your mind as well. This ugly, painful feeling stirring up a storm inside of you made you clench your fist in frustration. Itâs your fault for expecting so much, your fault for reading the signs wrong and it was your fault for loving a person who promised you nothing. Letting the tears finally drop, you silently cried at the rooftop alone. You had no idea how long you were crying however, even this time of wallowing wasnât given to you by fate because after a few minutes, you heard distant crying and screams and as the sun was setting, you squinted your eyes, noticing something from the distance before the villain charged straight at you.
You seethed through the pain of your body hitting the floor of the rooftop with such force as the villain loomed down on you. Ah fuck, those were going to leave bruises. Summoning your weapon, you roughly grabbed the Villainâs foot and shoved him out of the way.
âIâm kinda in a bad mood⌠Sorryâ You muttered, charging straight after the villain
As usual, the news were already on your tail. The villain provided quite a bit of a fight, but it was nothing you couldnât handle. Plus, with the negative emotion fuelling you, it wasnât long before the villain finally gave himself up in exchange for his life. When the news reporter asked for an interview, you simply turned and ignored them. You canât have cameras up in your face this time, everyone will notice the puffy eyes. However, your cold actions startled everyone. You were known as the kind one between your duo, while the Pro Hero Dynamight was as brash as he can be, you were always the one the media counted to speak in his behalf. Always smilling, always having such a warm aura. The usual welcoming hero-type.
Returning back to the agency, you honestly didnât even think about getting your wounds treated first. Honestly speaking, you didnât even notice you had small wounds. Though they were only scratches, it still needed to be disinfected. It was only when Kirishima stated it with slight panic in his voice that you noticed.
âAh! (Name)! Why didnât you go to the hospital to get that treated?â
You smiled, as hard as it was, you tried your best âThereâs really nothing to worry about, I can just treat this with First Aidâ
You retreated to the locker rooms and got the first aid, silently mending your wounds alone until a loud knock came from outside
âOiâ
Taking a deep breath, you stood up, the bandage still wrapped loosely on your forearms and answered the door. Putting on another fake smile, you grinned
âYo!â
âDonât fucking Yo me, get out here, look how shitty those bandages are wrapped around you. You wanna get infected?â Bakugo nagged
âAh! No itâs fineââ
His glares made you shut up and simply comply with his request. He dragged you towards inside the office and made you sit on his chair
âWhââ
âTch stop fucking complaining and seat, dammitâ
The way he handled your wounds with utmost care, like you were such a fragile being, made you want to cry again. Soon, another woman will experience this. You werenât special to him. Maybe you were, but not in the sense you wanted. Much like Kirishima and the others, you were simply a dear friend to him.
Just a friend
His phone suddenly started ringing, you wouldnât notice it but Bakugo felt his blood turn cold. He knew exactly who was calling. He immediately snatched his phone before you could take a peek who the Caller ID was.
Sighing loudly, Bakugo answered the call
âWhat? I told you never to call me unless itâs an emergency, right?â He snarled
âYouâre mean Katsuki-n, Iâm already at the restaurant! Where are you?â
You dreaded to hear that overly sweet voice, it made you want to throw up, further more apparently Bakugo had a date, what the heck was he doing taking his time with you then? Slowly standing up from the office chair, Bakugoâs other hand slammed on the sidearm of it, trapping you. His glare was on-point again. You wondered what was he so pissed off about? Pouting slightly, you sunk back to the chair
âIâm still doing shit, who told you be there so damn early?! Also I told you not to call me by my first name! WE'RE NOT FUCKING CLOSEâ
Your eyes widened a bit, a little bit of pride welling up inside you as you remembered how in their meet ups, Bakugo would always be there earlier than you and how he had no problem whatsoever when one day the way you called him suddenly changed from Bakugo to Katsuki
âEh? More important than me?â
Unconsciously, Bakugo licked the upper part of his lips as his gaze went to you, staring at the reports on his desk completely unaware of his eyes. He smirked
âDamn right bitch, a lot more important than youâ
Your eyes widened, eyes immediately meeting his. You were about to retort but his hands were quick on your mouth
âAnyways, Iâll fucking be there in an hour, donât be fucking annoyingâ
With that, Bakugo hung up, not even waiting for the girl to reply. He removed his hand from your mouth.
âDonât fucking talk, Iâm gonna be found outâ
You looked to the side, unable to meet his gaze, the blush spreading like wildfire on your face.
âYou have no delicacy, Katsukiâ You commented and Bakugo couldnât help but chuckle
âWhat the heck did you expect from me?â He paused for a bit âWork comes firstâ
And just like that, your new budding hope was crushed. Of course⌠Even you were considered a load to him.
âThere, done, next time Iâm coming with you on patrolsâ He said, standing up and walking away from you, carrying the first aid with him âGo homeâ
You felt despair. This bitter feeling was becoming too much now. You stood up and hurried out, going straight for the locker room and changing out of your hero clothes. You wanted to go home as soon as you can. Everything was piling up and it was becoming too much for her to handle.
Next time Iâm coming with you on patrols
You gritted your teeth. First the marriage, then he suddenly doubts your strength to do things alone. Slowly⌠everything youâd ever done to build a good relationship with Bakugo was slowly crumbling. Grabbing your bag, you ran out of the building, ignoring Kirishima, Sero and Kaminariâs shout of concern.
On the other locker room, Bakugo was cherishing the feel of your lips on his hand, bringing it close to his mouth, he tried to feel as much as he can from the past sensation. He heard the others calling out your name so he went outside to see what the commotion was, only to find the entrance door sliding to close
âWhatâre you idiots yelling at?â
âAh, (Name) suddenly ran outside, she seemed like in a real hurry, I mean she didnât even bid goodbye to us like she always doesâ Sero explained and Bakugo just stood there before staring at his hand and clenching it.
You didnât even bother waiting for him like you always do
Hell finish this mission as fast as he can before he loses you.
At the train, on the walk home, you kept your head hung low until youâve reached your apartment. Closing the door, your body slid down on the door as you finally, finally let everything out. So much had happened in one day that it was too much for you.
Bakugo Katsuki was going to get married⌠not to you
Another woman will be on the receiving end of his affections⌠not yo
Heâs beginning to doubt your skills⌠thatâs on you
You cried and cried, not caring about anything else in the world. You kept at it until your body gave up and eventually you fell asleep on the entrance. You had a short unpleasant dream however, it was a dream where Bakugo kept walking forward and no matter how much you ran, how much you yell out his name, he didnât stop, he didnât even look at you, it was like you werenât even there, but when another woman was right behind you, unable to walk by herself, Bakugo turned around and past by you, carrying the girl in his arms, laughing and smiling without a care in the world as he left you behind once more.
You woke up from then on, feeling your entire body cold as a result of sleeping at the entrance. You didnât bother standing up yet though. Your mind was too busy rethinking the dream. You clenched your hands near your chest and gritted your teeth as another wave of tears threatened to spill.
Youâve decided.
For the first time, you were going to kill these feelings and stand by his side as one of his best friends. Youâll take what you can. Youâll kill it over and over again, no matter how many times if it means youâll be with him longer. It pains to admit it, but you feel like you canât continue working under him if you let your one-sided feelings continue and you canât have that. You canât bear it, thinking of living a life without Bakugo in it, atleast as a friend and a sidekick, you will still be there at his side. You just need to be there by his side⌠Be satisfied with thatâŚ
ââŚAtleast⌠let me be selfish one last time⌠before I kill off this feelingsâ You muttered, feeling sleep overcome you

Curious child meets sleepy plant god
Had a random fic idea lol unedited and unproofread I just finished writing it lol
It was just laying it a nice field, sprawled out in the afternoon sun, taking a nice little nap when it felt a stick poke it in the face
It bat the stick away and rolled over to lay with its face towards the ground, groaning whilst doing so
"So you're alive!" came a child's voice, and it cracked an eye to see a young mortal, appearing to be around the age of 8
"Yeah?"
"I found you laying here, what are you doing here?"
"Napping"
"Why here?"
"I like this field, it has many flowers of many lovely colors"
"Why do you like flowers so much?"
"I donno, they're just very pretty I suppose, and I can also make them on command as well"
"You can? How?" the child asked excitedly
"Like this," it touched one of it's fingers to the ground, drawing a stem, and once them stem is long enough it opens it's hand, and the flower gets petals, it then picks the flower and gives it to the child
"Woah!! Can you teach me how to do that?"
"Ahaha I'm afraid that'd be a little tricky without the help of my friend, Green, giving you plant magic"
"Green, like the god?"
"Yeah"
"Is your friend a god?"
"Yep"
"That's so cool!! Are you a god?"
"Yep, the currently sleepy god of plants, Beta, in the flesh"
"Woah!! My parents say it's really rare to meet a god!"
"I suppose a lot of my friends do spend most their time in their domains, I however spend most my time here, helping plants grow, also I didn't think any mortals lived around here? Why are you over here?"
"I live an half-hour away from here, my parents took me here for a picnic"
"Why don't you return to them? They're prolly worried about you"
"I'm a little lost, I was just chasing a butterfly than realized I donno where I am then found you"
The god sat up "You're lost? I'll help you find your parents if you need"
"Yeah I need help"
"Alrighty," the god stood up, and took the child's hand, "Ready?"
The child nodded, and the god summoned a big plant beneath their feet, lifting them high into the air
"Woah!" went the child
"See them?" asked the god
"Over there!" the child said, pointing, the god looked that direction, and spotted a couple of mortals around a picnics blanket, looking around worried
"Alrighty, here we go!" The god picked up the child, held them tight, and jumped towards the child's parents, when they got close to the ground it summoned a bunch of flowers to break their fall
The childs parents screamed when they landed, the god stood up and sat the child on the ground
"There we go, now don't go running off again alright?"
"Mmhm!" the child went
The god turned to the kids parents, "And you should keep a better eye on your child, they got really lucky like this, to meet me"
"I will, and thank you so very much! How could I repay you?"
"There's no need, I suppose you could make sure to be respectful to plants and make offering to me, but there's not much need if you ask me"
"Make offerings? Like you would to the gods?"
"Mmhm, I am a god after all, now I would like to return to my nap, farewell" the god than jumped away, back towards where it was napping before
