Hey guys, gallick here! As I expand my writing parameters, I thought it would be good to make a rules post. I ask that you please read this prior to requesting, because it has my preferences, request status, and content info included.

【CONTENT INDEX】

what is a... ✰ 『thirst』this is usually when you send in your thoughts on a certain character in a certain situation. My responses can be anything from a jumbled up paragraph to a full on thirst drabble (~250-500 words), depending on whether I’m on mobile vs. desktop, as well as if I jive with your thirst. That being said, don’t ever feel ashamed of the thirst that you want to send in! Even if it’s not my thing, as long as it’s not on my no-no list [see below], I’ll at least post it with some sort of response! See examples of thirst «here», «here», «here»,  and «here». Thirst can sometimes turn into full on fics depending on how I feel about it!

✰ 『drabble』this is a “fic” that is generally more in depth than a thirst, but not as plot-driven as a full on one shot or fic. I usually keep drabbles between 500-2,000 words. They are normally given their own post instead of replying to the ask itself, but I will respond to the ask with a link to the drabble once I’ve posted it. 

✰ 『fic』this is usually a one-shot piece, which means it is a stand-alone fanfiction work. These are at least 2,000 words in length, and I do not put a limit on them as I have no self-control and will write huge fics with no regard to my personal sanity. These will always be posted as their own text post, and will more than likely be {sporadically} uploaded to my ao3 account as well. If the fic is inspired by an ask, I will answer the ask with a link to the fic once I’ve posted it.

✰ 『multi-chap fic』this is usually a piece that spans at minimum two parts, connected via the plotline that runs consistently through them both. As of now, I do not have any multi-chapter works, but I do have a couple planned for the future! These will always be posted as their own text post, with links to the prior part as well as the future part, once it has been posted. 

【WRITING RULES】

✰ All characters are aged up to at least 20 years of age no matter whether the situation is sfw or nsfw. The only times I will write “high school” types of works will be in flashbacks, not full length fics. I always try to explicitly state within the work that they are of age - whether that’s referring to them a Pro Heroes (BNHA), Pro Athletes (Haikyuu!!), etc. If I ever discuss “dorms”, I am always talking about college dorms/apartments. 

✰ This is my blog, and therefore I get to choose what I do and do not want to write. I apologize if that means I have glossed over your request, but I cannot force myself into writing something I do not feel like I can do, because then it’s not genuine and even though it gets the content out, it’s not content I’d be proud of. 

✰ I do NOT close my requests. I feel like it’s pointless, given a lot of people don’t pay attention to the open/closed titles anyway. With this being said, I do receive a lot of requests. If you feel that yours has gotten buried, eaten by the tumblr ask monster, or ignored, please feel free to send it in again. Also keep in mind that I might have deleted or ignored your ask in favor of another that sparked more inspiration. That doesn’t mean I won’t come back to yours later. Be patient with me!

✰ Please be kind. I don’t ask that you fawn over me when you send in a request, but be courteous when you send me an ask. If you just send me a blunt ask, I might not understand what you’re really asking for, or what you actually want, which can stunt the creative process and possibly end up with me deleting your ask. Please be kind and constructive if you choose to criticize, but criticism is always welcome. 』

『 I always put warnings in my tags above the fic post, so please read the warnings prior to diving into a piece. -What’s this blog about?❓❓❓ This blog, @askluxnovalibra , is the ‘ask box’ for my main astrology blog @luxnovalibra . To avoid cluttering everyone’s dash, I made a separate blog. This way I can answer many asks in a row and manage/organize the questions more thoughtfully.

-What can we ask about? 🤔 Anything really. The most common asks I get are about compatibility and placement descriptions. If you need advice or to rant, I will always try to help you out or send you a link to someone who can.

-Do you answer compatibility asks? If we send in a compatibility ask, what should we expect? ❤️ Yes I do, at least for now. Most people will send their sun, moon, rising, mercury, mars, and venus of themselves and their partner or crush. I will give my first impressions and potential problems I see. I may say how they get along, how they like to be treated, and what they want/need. It’s important to remember that without seeing charts, I can give only very very very generic answers. Know that people are complex and unique. I do not know you or your crush/partner personally. I can only attempt to guess how they act according to my knowledge of the signs’ archetypes. I will never be 100% accurate. No one will be.

-Do we have to send our sun, moon, mars, venus, etc. when asking a compatibility question? ❤️ No, you can send as many or as few placements as you want. It’s more interesting to send specific questions like ‘how is a Scorpio venus in love?’ or ‘how does a Scorpio venus and Leo venus get along?’ or ‘compatibility for x mars and x venus with y mars and y venus?’ Stuff along those lines. Communication is necessary and vital for healthy relationships. Most of the time, problems are not solved by simple compatibility. It’s important to remember that most crushes are just that, crushes. It’s best not to spend too much time worrying about them. For most people, crushes don’t last more than a few months, if that. As an air dom with a Scorpio venus, I hardly ever have crushes and so when I see a lot of people obsessing over them, I usually will give you an honest answer. That being said, it’s totally ok to ask for advice. I’m never going to chew you out or call you stupid for liking someone. It’s natural. It’s a part of life. -Do you answer some asks before others? 🔢🔝 Most of the time my inbox isn’t that full (RIP the blogs that have 50+ lol) so I try to answer them all as fast as I can. Usually I answer chronologically (first ask gets answered first). If a question is simpler, I’ll try to get those out of the way. Complex questions take longer because I need to think about them and look up info as needed. Lately, anon compatibility gets answered last. I am more likely to answer non-anon asks a little faster, especially if you’re following me @luxnovalibra (you don’t have to follow @askluxnovalibra). Why? Because I don’t like when anons copy and paste compatibility q’s into 20 astro blogs’ boxes. It’s a bit disheartening because usually it’s just people who don’t care enough to look into astrology at all, and send in their crush-of-the-week’s placements. But don’t worry sending anons is perfectly fine! I totally understand being shy, or even because you don’t your main blog to pop up or because you’re not a full-time astro blog or whatever the reason. I get it, and I send anons sometimes too. And don’t worry if you’ve sent multiple blogs the same ask to get another opinion. Usually we can tell who’s just copy and pasting and who wants to learn. Pro tip for sending asks to other blogs: it helps if you say hi and/or mention something specific you like about their blog not just ‘compatibility xyz love ur blog.’ “Thank yous’ and polite feedback are nice too. Remember most of us are just teenagers that don’t get paid and genuinely want to help and learn together. To put it short, most asks get answered in 6 days or less

-Why do you add so many links?📚 I’m an air dominant lol I like to know things. It’s because I want to help and sometimes links are the best way to go. If I don’t know a lot about something off the top of my head, I’ll give you links and references. I get most of them from tumblr and a simple google search. Links aren’t mean to scare you, they’re there for deeper insight. I learn best with specific examples and links provide that. I give multiples because everyone has a different preference for writing style and multiples increases the chance of you understanding something and relating to something. Also, sometimes I’ll add them if the asker doesn’t specify if they want my personal opinion or a more general description.

-What if I ask about something you don’t know about? 🤷🏻‍♀️🕵🏻‍♀️ I will give you my best guess but admit that I don’t know a lot about that subject. I assume you don’t want a random answer and I don’t want to give one. Expect links or I’ll send you to someone who might be able to help

Project Title – Behind Closed Doors

(Thinking about the title of your project, how does it articulate what the project is communicating?)

The project title, “Behind Closed Doors,” is parallel to the idea I had which was people creating a façade for the masses to see whilst being in public. However, when they are alone like being in their rooms at uni, I’m trying to capture my friends at their trust and real versions of themselves. The privacy and their surroundings, help and comfort my friends to act like the person they wouldn’t do when they’re in public. Personally, I feel as if people have to act a certain way because they study a specific course. They feel like they’re confirmed to the idea that they have to create a fake persona to fit in within the course and be liked. This series documents my friends being in their safe place doing what they do, behaving the way they want such as my friends djing and sewing garments.

(How does your research inform your project?)

For my research, I looked at people such as Peter Devito, Maya Fuhr, Adrienne Salinger and even went onto looking at caged animals. The first photographer I looked at was Peter Devito, he started this whole process of “insecurities” but embracing them. I admired his work a lot and related to it hard which made me want to recreate his work. But after consideration, I thought that this portraiture wasn’t my style and I wanted my project to be bigger. This is when I moved onto Adrienne Salinger who takes photographs of being in their bedrooms. The reason why I was so drawn to this is because of my experience of living in halls. Living in halls as taught be a lot and being around different people with different values have been overwhelming for me. The emotions that I go through every day is uncanny and sometimes I feel so unattached to reality. I thought if I combined bedrooms and real-life emotions it would be something that I would be attached to and would involve my everyday life with my photography. In terms of research, I think that students feel like caged animals and feel like we're in boxes so my research was also my experiences in halls too.

Aims, Objectives, Concept

(Do you think you have successfully achieved what you set out to convey in your work?   Be critical and analytical!)

If I set it as a pros and cons list that I can fully see if I have achieved what I wanted to convey in my work. Firstly, the pros, I think that the flow in my research has helped me a lot to end with the idea of distracting from the real world that we live in. Research helped me developed the idea of being in our boxed rooms all the time and instead of thinking of it negatively and switched and turned it into art instead. I have to thank the people around me and the experiences that I go through everyday living in these halls because without all of this I wouldn’t have produced work like this. Another pro is that at the start I was very scared of the colour printing process as it is a big jump from black and white darkroom. However, instead of blocking it out I decided that I wanted to learn the ins and outs of colour printing as I was always determined to get the right colour balance. I think printing my final photos for four days straight really helped me to focus on this aspect and I think after all of this process I actually achieved the right colour balance and I love how all my colours contrast and compliment each other. As well as this, I had some troubles on the way with the film camera as all my shots were all turning blurry and out of focus but when it came to the final cut, I achieved high-quality photographs which I was very pleased with.

Furthermore, the cons of my final pieces are the lighting aspect. The reason why I say this is because I think I could of experiment more with light sources other than flash and a softbox. I wanted to make my photos seem real but not dramatic and forced. My aim was to use flat lighting, however, I think I could have extended more with the lighting, I could have focused more on their faces and then darkened the background so the focal point would stand out more and also I could have shown my tutors my strengths in lighting too. I am disappointed by the lack of lighting, but if I had a few more weeks I could have developed this into it and had stronger photographs. Another disadvantage is I could have done 9 images instead of 5. The reason why I say this is because the story could have flowed more if I introduced more people and captured them doing more stuff such as putting make-up on, taking pictures in their room, drinking alcohol, mixing people together and have them partying. If I could carry on with my project this is what I would do for more.

Form, medium, presentation

(How did you present your work and why, consider the sequencing and arrangement of images. Can you suggest where it might be seen Gallery, Magazine, Advert etc)

My photographs are in the theme of the documentary as I am documenting people’s privacies and their living habits and capturing certain people’s behaviours.

I would see the “Behind Closed Doors” series in a gallery but with even more pictures entailing movement and people doing other things in their university halls. It would a good series to display if I went around every single person’s student room in Harrow and shot what they do in their spare time in their rooms. This aspect would be wall-worthy as I think several people would relate to this theme and come to an understanding of what exactly I am portraying. In my opinion, I think as photographers can always think negatively about their work because of photographers around them thinking bigger and bolder ideas but it doesn’t mean it necessarily is better. There is a difference in perspective. It is good to shoot real people and seeing your story being illustrated is a different feeling of proudness to have. Seeing the personalities of my loved ones in a tangible form makes the series even better for me as I can see it in a different light than everyone else. This series is a reminder of the valuable lessons that I have learned, and what makes it better is at the time the photo was taken I didn’t understand the lesson then. Compared to my other projects, this project particular has been my favourite as it means more to me and hopefully, the viewers can see that.

Research Methods

The research that I did were all different types of forms. One day I sat in the library and took about 20 books with me and sat there all day looking at photographers and inspiration for my project. This helped me to find the photographer Peter Devito which started the whole theme of insecurities and distractions. I also went to exhibitions called “The Fortnight of Tears” by photographer Tracey Emin. This in particular gallery helped me think more deeply into art and how experiences and changes can impact on your mind. Her work made me think about it all day as it stayed with me a day to night and even when I woke up in the morning, I felt some type of sorrow. She inspired me to take a different approach to my project this time as I wanted to capture what is going in my life right now and how my mindset is feeling.

New WHV Friends from China

At lunch time, I met two WHV makers from China, named Alice and Emma (they use nickname, * as you know * Chinese names are hard to remember for Western people). The first introduction at lunch time was really memorable, because I as the new boy, could immediately be familiar with them, we asked each other names, niceties, and exchange little stories of our background. They also mentioned that in China, almost all social media was blocked by the government, they just made up their social media account just when arriving in Australia. Imagine how strict the regulations in China.

Lucky for current generation, though only be a friend in a short time, we can still communicate via social media, share our stories in other places. It’s always fun to share stories, because with our limited time and opportunities to try everything, we can still experience it by reading or watching other people’s stories, as I try to share through this blog post.

While i’m staying here, the food category for me is just two kinds, Nice and Very Nice (as Trinity says in The Naked Traveler book). Luckily we have Chef Jason and Chef Simon who are so amazing when preparing Asian Food, which is perfect food for an Indonesian like me.

Chromecast that I bought at JB Hi-Fi Sydney for $60, is really useful for entertainment purpose. With HDMI TV provided in our room plus WiFi internet in camp area, I can stream my smartphone screen directly to TV wirelessly. Watching YouTube, Netflix, and so on the bigger screen certainly gives different satisfaction.

Two Weeks Isolated

For two weeks in this remote area, I felt so productive, have finished reading many books, study online course in Udacity, without forgetting to have leisure time by playing video games or watching TV. I also routinely prepare for the ‘quiet time‘ every day, which I almost never miss every single day. I find that praying and reading holy bible can be done anytime and anywhere, the most important is the intention. I can ignore all the things that usually keep me busy during my stay in the big city while I’m here.

But on the other side, I miss the freedom of exploration like I did in Sydney before, when I finished my work and on the day off, just enjoy walking in Sydney CBD, meeting friends and family, and go to Church.

Then what really makes me isolated here? I have difficulty socializing with some of my co-workers here, either because of differences in personality and way of life or maybe because I’m an introvert guy. I know that relationship can’t be forced, I try not to wear a ‘mask’ just to get along with them. As a result, two weeks I work here, I can only be friends with few people. Feelings of isolation made me to know more what the real meaning of freedom is.

You’re Fired

That morning was feels unusual, I spent the morning dawn until sunrise to take some photos in the camp with my Sony mirrorless camera. And the night before I dreamed of a place that was completely new to me. And it’s coming true, on afternoon, Camp Manager came up to me and asked for time to chat. With a heavy tone, he says that I will not get a  working shift anymore and have to leave this place tomorrow, it means “you’re fired!“.

What is the main reason for me being fired? Very simple, I can not drive a car. Sad? Yes i’m so sad, being fired because of the lack that I have. My head feels hurt, it feels like i want to learn ‘driving car’ as soon as possible so I can keep stay here. Happy? Also yes, because this means I will leave my isolation zone soon, and once again hope for a better experience in a new place later. This is the first experience for me to feel ‘being fired’, and then feels sad and happy at the same time.

Got fired or rejected teach me that “when one door closes, another door open“. Learning from the Walt Disney  story who did not give up even though he was got rejected many times, but later he founded Disney and created a masterpiece with his mouse character that we know until today. Another success story about being rejected was from WhatsApp Founder, Jan Koum. Because of that, I try not to be discouraged, there is always a way, one door closed, another thousand doors will open. Hopefully!

Spend 1 Night at Renner Springs

The next day, I was given a job as Housekeeper for last time. Together with Yuko, my WHV Indonesia colleague here, for the first time I’m get this housekeeping experience in Australia. We were given a list of rooms to do, then wandered around the camp area with a trolley of housekeeping tools. The heat of the sun become a challenge for Housekeeper in a open camp area like this.

Rob, the Camp Manager, accompanied me to the ‘super expensive’ hostel in Renner Springs area, for an overnight stay and wait for the Greyhound bus schedule on dawn. The cost of $96 per night with the quality of a hostel or two star hotel, makes me think, this must be the monopoly price because there are no competitors nearby, in the middle of nowhere.

There’s not much thing I can do here, the streets look like the big pasture with the longest road in Australia, Stuart Highway, in between.

One Month Living in Casuarina

I have not got accommodation in Darwin until my overnight stay in Renner Springs. With just simple keyword “room Darwin” in the WHV Indonesia Facebook group, I finally found accommodation in the Wulagi area near Casuarina, Darwin region. With a price of $120 per week I get a big private room with a double bed, cabinets, and air-con.

The one thing that makes me ‘annoyed’ here, that is the dog barking frequently along the road to the house. But eventually I somehow got used to their barks, and the doggie got bored barking into me. I lived with Mrs. Kristy and Mr. Tony for about a month here.

One Month Working in Darwin Turf Club

A few days being jobless in Darwin, it makes me thinking too much. I was also waiting for an interview with one of  favorite employers in Darwin, Compass Group ESS. Based on information from my friend, it tooks about 2-4 weeks from the interview until you can start your first working day there, it’s really a long time. Rather than jobless too long in Darwin and waiting for ESS schedule, I had to start submit my Resume both online and offline (drop directly).

A few days later, I was accepted to work as Kitchen Hand at Darwin Turf Club, after going through walk in interview with a lot of candidates, praise God! I work with casual status but with full-time working hour, five to six days a week.

How exciting working as Kitchen Hand here, I do a lot of food preparation like Sandwich, Hot Dog, Pork Roll, Fruit Salad, Burger, and so forth. Together with Grandma Dawn, Antonnette, and Anapolla, I was helped learning many new things in this kitchen. In addition I also learned to be an all-rounder, delivering orders from the kitchen to the customers at the bar. I even feel the wrong order experience during my all-rounder time here. The most exhausting day was when the event day was over, the pile of dish wash and cutlery was ready to hit us. One month working here feels so good, because I enjoy this job so much, with many great colleagues.

Didn’t Pass ESS Medical Checkup

The long process of job application in Compass Group ESS starts from notification email for info session. I had to ignore it several times because at that time I thought it would actually work for 3 months at Tennant Creek. Lucky I did not directly reply to the email so I still got an email regarding info session schedule until I finally returned to Darwin again. Coming to Manigurr-ma, I with other applicants fill out the job application form so much, I also have to prepare some work reference, work history, disease history, and so on.

Finish the interview phase, I’ve got an email for medical check up. At that time I was still working at Darwin Turf Club, finished my work at 5 pm, I headed straight to Darwin City, to start medcheck around 6 pm. Again I had to fill in the form, fill in the history of the disease again, and I filled in my backpain history while working as Kitchen Hand on Google 6 months ago, and maybe this is one of the important points in recruiting new employee at Compass Group ESS. And it seems true, a few days later after medcheck, I received an email that I did not pass the selection of new employee in Compass Group ESS. Due to company policy, they did not provide details of why I did not qualify, so I can only guessing.

Sad? Definitely yes.. For couple of days, it feels like there is something hanging in my mind, “Why i’m not passed? Why like this? Why like that?”. Very stressful. However, this is Australia, life is hard, how the working holiday visa holders like us struggle to find a job, to survive here. Many stories from the WHV friendsthat I heard, there are some people who being jobless for a couple of months, have no more cash to survive, borrow money for few times. Another story, some people being fired after only working for 2 days, in another case, some people who working hard but their wages are not paid by the employer, waiting for a few months (how can they pay rent?). Later, there are other cases of friends who are exposed to fraud cases ranging from hundreds to thousands of Australian dollars, imagine the hard work in Australia should just vanish into empty hands. Therefore, my problem is a piece of cake compare to that, as OZ people said, “No Worries, Mate!“.

God is very good, His plan is always beyond my expectation, I thought positively back then. On the same day I received a job reference from Darwin Turf Club to work at one of the big restaurants in Darwin Waterfront. I was immediately looking for new accommodation in Darwin City, with the condition that I was still living in Casuarina, far away from Darwin Waterfront. Another consideration, I’ll get work on the night shift in this new place, so it’s a hassle if i’m coming home on midnight and i have no private vehicle. And starting from here, I will feel a new experience of living in a sharing apartment and meeting great friends in Darwin.

Life Experiences in Sharing Room Apartment

This is one of life experiences that I want to feel in Australia, living with WHV friends in a sharing room apartment. This is a new experience for me because i’m always live in private room before in Jakarta, Sydney, Tennant Creek, and lastly in Casuarina. Located in Darwin CBD area, 4 men and 6 women start their  lives together, all housemates are Indonesian except there is one Japanese, named Kenji-san. It took several days for me to get to know them one by one, due to our different working hours.

The first night arrived, I was ready with a melodious ‘snoring’ from my roommate. Believe me, living in the sharing room is not complete if you do not meet a ‘snoring’ roommate. And since I slept in this sharing room, I became more aware that I also have the ability to ‘sleep-talking’. What kind of ability is this!

This should be my first experience live in apartment and sharing room, because i'm always live in private room in Sydney and 'kost-an' Indonesia before. 4 men and 6 women start their lives together under one roof, reminds me of #TerraceHouse Japanese TV Series . . And once again, i've met Japanese friend in Darwin, Kenji-san. In some way, help me to try Japanese culture in home like saying #Itadakimasu when we're starting to eat, #Tadaima when i'm going back to home, #Ittekimasu when i'm going out, or #OtsukareSamaDesu when we're finishing something together. . . Trip to Litchfield National Park

A trip? Hurayy… I really missed doing 1-day trip again, because since arriving in Darwin I’m become a workaholic and hardly had time to do a trip. Starting from my short message in the housemates Whatsapp group, I sent a plan for a trip to Litchfield. Because of the good response of one or two persons, they give a list of names who interested for the trip. Honestly, seeing such a positive response made me more excited, and immediately preparing well for this trip. We’re using Bargain Car Rental Darwin service for one day car rent. Saturday, August 26, 2017, five housemates are ready to take a long trip together for the first time.

About two hours drive from Darwin, we arrived at Litchfield. Beautiful natural landscape, away from the crowd of Darwin CBD (*eh crowd!?), and waterfalls with swimming pools open to the public, enough to unwind the fatigue of work and the routine of living in the city. We swam in Wangi Falls, had lunch with the meals that we had prepared the night before, then proceeded to Florence Falls and Buley Rockhole. There is not much we can do while in Litchfield, but our bonding as housemate feels stronger since this 1-day trip. This is what always makes me want for traveling together again, because the wiseman saying, sounds like this, “Once Traveling Together, We’re Friends Forever!”

Midnight Birthday Surprise

Birthdays are always become an annual moment to give appreciation for someone, through words, gifts, and most importantly, prayer and hope to become a better person. September 9, 2017, it is our housemate birthday, Kenji-san from Japan, who may feel isolated in the midst of Indonesians people. With the intention to reduce the sense of ‘isolation’,  together we’re planning a birthday surprise for Kenji-san.

Honestly, the most difficult thing about planning is choosing the right time because our working hours are different, some are morning, noon, afternoon, evening and even until dawn. From the original plan, the surprise was done during the day, with consideration of many being at home then, then come the idea surprise at dawn time when we were all majority still at home (read: sleep). But in the end we chose this brilliant idea, “How about in midnight 12 o’clock?”. Quickly, we also prepare a birthday surprise for Kenji-san, birthday cake, candle, gift, greeting card, camera for documentation and so on. Finally, come the moment of togetherness on midnight. I’m really miss that moment! 🙂

Three Weeks of Temptation

After finish my job at Darwin Turf Club, I started a new job at a restaurant in the Darwin Waterfront area. I started shifting from Kitchen Hand who used to work in the morning shift, moving to the night shift in this new place. I have to learn to sacrifice the night time that should be a relax time and quality time with my friends. Living Sacrifice!

The toughest trial is that there are times when I work really hard overtime, starting at 6 pm and finish until 4 am. How come? The overloaded dishwashing and kitchen utensils almost every night plus an inefficient work system made my early weeks working here feel so full of trials. Several times I have to work alone (which should be handled by at least 2 Kitchen Hand) plus the absence of a trolley that I can use to transport dirty plates from outside the kitchen during opening time, I have to go back and forth from the Dishwashing Area to where dirty dishes placed which is quite far away, carrying an empty container to accommodate the dirty dishes. My waist seemed to be detached because of the extreme work of Kitchen Hand.

How can I motivate myself who always feels stressful at that time is, try to remember my dream back then, remember my motivation to start this Working Holiday, why I want to ‘falling down’ after all the hard way to Australia, all for the family that I love in Indonesia. Remembering my happy moments, how I feel so blessed and loved, always give back my motivation to get back to work and survive in this temptation. Another way, I re-read my favorite fictional story like One Piece, and found one or two chapters that re-energized my mood at that time. Spiritually, the same thing applies when you read the Scriptures and find one or two verses that corroborate yourself. Sometimes in your life you will feel this ‘aha’ moment (EUREKA!), Do not be afraid! 🙂

In the end, I only worked for three weeks here because I got a new job at another restaurant that I hope will be better. I decided to go out with various considerations especially for my health reasons.

Become a Volunteer at Vinnies NT

Starting from my boredom in the absence of activity in the morning until noon (my office hours were just afternoon to night), i visit at one of the Vinnies retail stores in Darwin CBD area, and meet Bianca, one of Vinnies NT managers. With her beautiful smile and humble figure answered my simple question, “hi there, how can I become a volunteer here?”, and within a few days I was given the opportunity to become Retail Assistant Volunteer at Vinnies Shop Darwin CBD.

Being a Retail Assistant, I learned how to set up shop to keep it clean and tidy, learn to use cash machine, learn how to give a greetings to every customer who comes in. Through volunteering, I got a new experience for something that I’ve never done before. I learned how Volunteering become part of Australian culture. Making money is a happiness, but making other people happy is a super happiness! 🙂

Two Months at Ducks Nuts Restaurant

Now I am getting more nimble in new workplaces, maybe this is a positive effect from super stresfull heavy work before. I work more passionately, not only because this work more humane, but also because the coworkers here are a great and humble people.

At the end of September, the Ducks Nuts boss gave “bad news” to every employee including me, that this restaurant will be shut forever by the end of October 2017. So next month, we all have to leave the job in this place, and try to find a new workplace out there. A surprising news especially for employees who have worked for several years here. The closure of Ducks Nuts, which has been operating for more than 10 years in Darwin, is also a bad news for their loyal customers.

Two months working here also became the end of my working day in Darwin, Australia. After hearing the news of the closing restaurant, I decided to end my adventure in Darwin at the end of October, because on one side I’ve managed to get 88 working days as a requirement for my Work and Holiday Visa extension, and on the other side I’m very curious about the other city in Australia, such as Brisbane or Melbourne. Finally, my choice was Melbourne with some consideration, one because the creative industry in this city that looks quite promising and many community and industry events held in this #1 most liveable city. In my mind, I have to try to get back in the industry that become part of my life in Indonesia before, Video Games and Information Technology.

Second Year Visa Granted

Lucky since my school time, I was used to taking care of my own school administration without the help of parents. Collecting files, scanning documents, and other things to complete the requirements, it’s a piece of cake for me, because everything listed in official website. After complete all the requirements, I immediately submit online form on the Australia immigration website, lodging a process to extend period of my stay in Australia on a work and holiday visa for one year.

On October 11, 2017 I did an onshore application (in Australian territory), the expectation of getting a second year visa started. The HAP ID from my medical check-up in 2016 was still valid so I no longer need to do a medcheck here, which cost about $300 in Darwin, quite expensive. With that money, i can be to buy airline tickets to Melbourne. And after the long wait for three weeks, my second year visa granted on November 2nd, 2017. Thanks so much to Merry, Dewi, and Cardona housemates who helped me a lot during the preparation of this visa lodge. I’m feel blessed! 🙂

What’s Next

When i’ve finished writing this, I’ve been living for about 2 weeks in Melbourne. Again I get lots of new experiences, new friends, and new communities. I am also still trying and struggling to get a job in the field of information technology here, a challenge that is quite difficult but it seems not impossible. When the opportunity came, I also have a dream to write a book about my Working Holiday story for a year. I will doing my best again in this second year opportunity. *Please pray for me, friends 🙂

Early Accounts of Jesus' Childhood

There are two widely separated traditions of the childhood of Jesus. The older and more valuable one, whose chief representative is a writing known as the Protoevangelium of James, was condemned by St. Jerome, along with a great deal of ancient and authentic early Christian material, and so came under the ban of the Popes.1 In its place there grew up another and later tradition, a mass of popular fables and miracle stories which captivated the minds of the Middle Ages and have come down to us as the official “Infancy Gospels.”2 These stories are unabashed daydreams in which Jesus is always the “super-boy” whose tricks are the dread and envy of all his fellows: Jesus slides down a sunbeam or hangs his water pitcher on a sunbeam, and when the other boys try it with disastrous results, Jesus instantly and magically mends the damage; when Joseph the carpenter has a hard time fitting pieces of wood together, Jesus simply blesses them into place; when a local bully jostles Jesus in the street or breaks his sand castles with a stick, the offender is at a word from Jesus withered upon the spot; when the other kids will not play with Jesus, he turns them into goats, and so forth.3 Of course, it is the school teacher who takes the worst beating, being struck blind or dead if he dares scold Jesus or tweak his ear—but only, of course, after Jesus has brilliantly illustrated his own wisdom and the teacher’s ignorance.4

Separated “by an enormous gap” from this popular literature which so vividly reflects the mentality of late antiquity is the earlier tradition, sober, plausible, and of recent discovery. New Greek and Coptic manuscript finds now take us back more than 700 years earlier than any childhood accounts of Jesus heretofore known outside the Bible.5 Yet it turns out that both traditions deal with the same basic stories. If we strip the later legends of their fantastic accretions (which are easily recognized because of the conflicts among them), we may well ask whether the nonmiraculous elements they all have in common might not go back to a foundation of fact. What are these elements?

For one, all sources, early and late, Christian and anti-Christian, agree that Jesus’ family was often in trouble and moved about a good deal. The early anti-Christian writers made much of this: a family of improvident ne’er-do-wells, tramping about the country looking for odd jobs; Mary a woman of the lowest classes and the loosest morals, working as a ladies’ hairdresser, kicked out by her husband when she had an affair with a Roman soldier (they furnished the name, rank, and serial number), giving birth in disgrace to Jesus, the ambitious boy who picked up a bag of magic tricks in Egypt along with exalted ideas about his own divinity, and who gathered about him a band of vagabonds and desperadoes with whom he ranged the countryside, picking up a living by questionable means.6

Implicit in all the early Christian accounts of Jesus, Cullmann observes, is that they are obviously written in reply to these scandalous stories that were spread about concerning the young Jesus and his family at a very early date.7 That is why they lay such stress on the spotless purity of Mary, give full play to the journey to Egypt, and emphasize the diligence of Joseph, who “never at any time ate the bread of idleness,” with the youthful Jesus always working hard at his side.8

Now we know who it was that gathered, embellished, and published the scandal-stories about the family—it was the doctors of the schools, the same “Scribes and Pharisees” who relentlessly pursued Jesus and John the Baptist during their ministries. Here again all our sources agree that the trouble was about Jesus and that it was the local scribes who stirred up the people against him and his family wherever they went.9 And the people were easily stirred up since (again according to all reports) they were overawed by Jesus and rather afraid of him, like the widow who took the family in when they came to Egypt—”wrapped in strips of ragged stuff even as we are,” says one early preacher—but turned them out of the house when Jesus (at the age of three) brought a dried fish to life.10 The miraculous element is only to be expected, but would pro-Christian apologists all admit that the family was hated and persecuted because of Jesus if there was any reason for denying it? “These people [must] suffer and hate us and persecute us,” Joseph complains to Jesus in a very early source.11

But what did Jesus do to make all that trouble? All the sources agree with Luke 2:52, that he was a good boy and everybody liked him. Even our collectors of miracle tales are careful to specify that there was nothing abnormal about his family life: “And He increased in stature like [any other] child, and He obeyed His parents, and performed all the other things which it was right for Him to do. . . . [He] called Joseph ‘my father,’ and Joseph instructed Him like a son, and the child obeyed him like a good son.”12

It was not anything Jesus did (it will not be necessary to show what is wrong with the popular “super-boy” stories), but rather things he said which, according to the early sources, got people upset and enraged the local clergy. The sayings attributed to him as a child are significant, since they are found among the early logia of Jesus, some of which are being accepted by scholars today as genuine utterances of the Lord:13 “My nature is not like yours. I existed before you were born. . . . If you wish to become a father, be taught by me. . . . No one else has seen the mark of the cross which I have sworn to bear. . . . You do not know how you were born or where you came from; I alone know that. . . . I know where you were born, and I know it from my Father who knows me.” 14 When he heals the foot of a young man who had injured himself with an ax, Jesus says, “Arise now, split the wood and think of me!” This is very close to the recently discovered logion, “When you split the wood, there am I!” which scholars now accept as a genuine utterance of Jesus. 15 Whether authentic or not, these childhood sayings of Jesus do represent the oldest, pre-Synoptic, Christian record. Also, all three references to Jesus’ childhood in the New Testament mention his phenomenal wisdom, even the greatest doctors at Jerusalem being “astonished at his understanding and answers” (Luke 2:47).

Another significant element in the “Infancy” stories is their constant preoccupation with the temple. This again is a mark of the earliest tradition, for as we have shown elsewhere, the church writers after the fall of Jerusalem become definitely hostile to the temple as a purely Jewish institution.16 The main theme is Mary’s service in the temple, “behind the veil of the altar,” where she offered up sacrifices—a strange thing for a woman to do. “Her tunic came down over her seal, and her head-cloth came down over her eyes; she wore a girdle round her tunic, and her tunic was never soiled or torn.”17

Of peculiar interest in the older stories are the accounts of the family’s sojourns in the desert. The Protoevangelium of James tells how Jesus, when he was eight, walked with his family from Jericho to the Jordan, that is, right through the heart of the “Dead Sea Scrolls Country” at the very time when the communities were going full blast. On the way, we are told, young Jesus turned aside to inspect a cave where a lioness had a pair of cubs. The rest of the company were terrified, but the lioness and her cubs first trotted along down to the Jordan and then on out into the desert.18 Now this is just the sort of thing one would expect to happen: the country was indeed peppered with caves, and lions were being hunted there as late as the time of the Crusades. What Jesus did was just the sort of naive and foolhardy things that little boys do. The later legends, with the Pseudo-Matthew in the lead, make a great production of this: Jesus approaches a cave of dragons, who instantly obey him, while all the animals of the desert then accompany the family on their journey in a regular Dionysiac procession. Embellishing the sober old story of Anna, Jesus’ grandmother, the same stories then have the trees of an oasis bowing down to Mary while a spring of water bursts forth at their feet, and so on.19 The fact that the early version resists every temptation to tell a miracle story about the lions is a strong argument for its authenticity. But the thing to notice is that we have here the whole family going out beyond Jordan into John the Baptist’s country.

A recently discovered Coptic fragment tells how Elizabeth took her son, John, and fled with him to Torinê, which can mean either “hill country” or “the desert of Torinê,”20 the latter being favored in view of another Coptic source that says that Elizabeth and her son lived “in the desert of Torinê” for years.21 They actually had a house there, and a Coptic bishop who tells how Mary went out there to see Elizabeth cries, “I marvel at thee, O virgin, how thou didst know where Torinê was, and who shewed thee the house of Zacharias.”22 When Elizabeth died, according to Serapion’s Life of John the Baptist, Mary and Jesus came to spend a week with the seven-and-a-half-year-old John. When their visit was at an end, Mary had misgivings about leaving the boy: “Woe is me, O John, for thou art alone in the desert and hast no one.” They did not leave, in fact, until they had instructed John “how to live in the desert,” being themselves something of experts in desert lore. Jesus reassured them with the news that John would not be alone, but actually live in a community of prophets and angels, “as if it were a multitude of people.”23

Now Serapion knew precious little about the desert Saints of Qumran who had disappeared 300 years before his day, and naturally thought as we do of one living in the desert as necessarily living alone. But today we know that those very deserts in Jesus’ time housed large communities of pious Jews who had retired from Jerusalem by invitation, in the manner of Lehi. Jesus, as we know from the Bible, often retreated to the desert; and the practice seems to go back to his childhood. After the return from Egypt, according to the Pseudo-Thomas, Joseph took Jesus into the desert, where they lived until things quieted down in Jerusalem. Mary went to stay with her relatives in Capernaum, planning to join her husband later in Nazareth, where Joseph possessed the property of his father. Then when Jesus was seven years old and things were quiet in the realm, they returned to Bethlehem and lived there.24 James confirms the picture: “I, James, who wrote this, went into the desert when there was rioting in Jerusalem at the death of Herod.”25 It was the natural and customary thing to do, as the Dead Sea Scrolls and the example of Lehi amply attest.

The Proto-Gospel of James begins by telling how the righteous and childless Joachim, desiring a blessing, went out in the desert and lived in a tent for forty days. It also tells that when doubts were expressed by some regarding the virginity of Mary, Joseph went out into the desert to be tested, after first submitting to the “water of testing”; and after he had returned, his honor vindicated, Mary went out next to undergo the same test.26 The story is peculiar and awkward enough not to be anybody’s invention, and indeed one is reminded of the great importance placed upon testing and examining the purity of all comers to the community of the Dead Sea Scrolls, and of their purging of defilements by baptisms and washings. If any doubts existed as to a person’s sanctity, passing the tests of the holy covenanters of the desert would allay them.27 A valuable apocryphal source first detected by this writer recounts that it was in one of the desert communities of priests by the banks of the Jordan that Mary became betrothed to Joseph.28

So we would suggest as a possible historical kernel of the stories about the childhood of Jesus certain basic propositions: (1) the family was poor and hard-working; (2) they moved about a good deal; (3) the youthful Jesus said things that astonished and disturbed people; (4) the local ministers stirred up trouble and spread scandalous reports about the family; and (5) they had connections with the pious heretics of the desert, whose writings are full of New Testament ideas and phraseology.

The Latter-day Saint reader cannot but note striking parallels between the early anti-Christian scandal stories and the Palmyra tales about the Joseph Smith family.
