Okay but imagine for a second
You’re Bruce Wayne, Batman
The richest, smartest man in every room you have walked into since you turned 20
Every bit of information is at the tip of your fingertips money, brawn and brains are no object
And then you take in a child
Named Dick Grayson
From the circus, who has the most flimsy proof of his existence you’ve ever seen with a birth certificate that looks too worn to properly make out the parents named without knowing them before.
No passport despite traveling all over the globe
No form of identification
So you give the kid an ID and everything is fine
He becomes Robin
Joins a team
Becomes nightwing
Runs all the teams
Becomes Batman
Runs himself into the ground
And then Dicks in his 20s and he’s sick
Really sick
It’s not viral, fungal, parasitic or bacterial
No one else you know has this
And he’s getting sicker
He can’t walk without help and spends all his days wrapped up in blankets fighting off never ending shivers.
He mixes up his brothers names and sometimes outright forgets some of the kids
He didn’t recognize Kori a few weeks ago and hasn’t remembered her since
So Everytime he blearily asks “who are you again?” They All answer with the knowledge that this might be the him decaying blue eyes don’t spark with recognition
The first time it happened it was horror and tears “an Oh my god! I’m so sorry I love you you’re my brother” over time it’s devolved into an “oh right…hi Jason”
And the doctors ask for his family history
Maybe. Maybe there is something that could save him, bring him back or stop this descent… this fall from happening to the most untouchable man that’s ever lived.
(Tim threw up after he saw Dick burst into tears, head resting on Alfred’s shoulder when he realized he couldn’t walk without help- they need to stop this)
So they dig
And dig
And dig
And nothing
There’s no evidence of the Graysons before John, the Lloyd’s before Mary.
Neither had been to a doctor anytime in the states at least
Bruce had redone all of Dicks vaccines once he acquired guardianship of him.
There was nothing
Nothing on his aunts or the uncle that was his namesake
There’s just nothing
Bruce realizes he doesn’t even know Dicks ethnic background. 1000s of tests he’s ran and he doesn’t even know if Dick has ever been to his parents home countries
They do every test they can come up with to try and fake a comprehensive family history
Mary Grayson was a fake name
So way John
They don’t know the real ones
Bruce finds out the mother of his son is Syrian and Romani and the boys first father is Afghani and Italian.
He finds out Mary’s father fled from Syria during the 60s and settled in Germany
He finds out that John Grayson and his brother were orphans together
He can’t even tell you which one of them gave Dick his blood type.
He knows everything
He’s the smartest man in every room he’s ever walked into
And he won’t be able to save his son
Because the boy who holds Bruce Wayne’s very heart in his hands knows that the best way to stay in the shadows is simply to show so little everyone will fill in blank spots with jarring inaccuracies so seamlessly they won’t even notice they did it.
They’ve called everyone
And Dick just keeps getting sicker
#dick grayson#nightwing#batman#batfam#jason todd#tim drake#bruce wayne#comics#damian wayne#batfamily#dc#Based on the fact JOHN GRAYSONS NAME IS FUCKING Giovanni#you know when you mix 1000 bright colors and the image ends up bland#Dick got the ethnic features of both his parents and somehow looks white#based on the fact I look like a white American with 2 middle eastern parents#thank god for the curly dark hair#also Bruce would kill himself if the reason Dick died was shitty family history#dc fanon#dc au#au#dc comics

Angel Dust Turns Human pt6
"Alastor & Angels background 3"

Pg1 Pg2 Pg3 Pg4 Pg5
Originally this was part of pt5, but Tumblr doesn't allow more than 31 pics so☹️ Sorry it took awhile, I've been putting off positing this mainly cuz I've been busy w assignments and wanting to catch up w my hobbies💔 but I finally finished fall classes so YAYAYA🙂
Antoní is PLATONICALLY blushing bc he's flustered that someone would care enough to give him something in general🙂🫶!! He's thinking, 'Woah, a whole scarf! Omg, this is so sweet and kind!!' (NO ITS NOT IT'S THE BARE MINUMUM-). Also, sorry, Alastors shoulders kinda look less broad😓! Also, pg 15 (or 16?) Angel dust's cheeks look more pinchable than I remember lol🤭!
Anyways, we're finally kinda back to the present!😁 but uh-oh, Angel knows there'll be consequences eventually☹️ I feel like Alastor has only been saying Antoní, but I promise he'll have more dialogue in the next one😥!!! He just missed his little boy; he hasn't said that name in years!! Also, I should let it be known that Angel Dust's human form WILL be getting a haircut‼️ it may look aesthetically messy, but it's actually just clumped up hair!🤫
Again, sorry for the delay and hope you like pt6🙂🫶

HOORAH😁#Teehee its gonna look like Alastor wants to kill Angel dust soooo bad🤫😊♡!!#at least I hope it so🤨#Next parts will discuss the difference between human and demon(?) angel dust. Mainly about his KINDA meekness#Hc that angel dust (as a kid) loved window shopping but knew his ass would be beaten to death if he spoke of it aloud (he loves dresses)#a part of me wants to hc him as hispanic in this comic mainly bc I am too and who doesnt love self-projecting?🤫#but I also know some ppl tweek at these ethnicity changes🧎! He'd still be italian but his unknown bio dad would be latino cuz I am so🙂#I love feeling represented😒#I probably wont do it but just know he doesnt appear as a white man in my mind. Still blonde tho🤫

Followed you a long time ago for just how cool your art looks, finally decided to look into the podcast characters you like to draw! I just saw one ask asking if the character Oscar is POC, and I wonder are characters in those podcasts usually unclear in ethnicity, and the fandom can freely headcanon? Like I know if info is clearly very mentioned in the original work or there is official concept art then it would be easy, but I'm really scared if I headcanoned something that is completely different from implied canon info I didn't pick up/ info that showed up in an obscure interview. Do you have any advice in navigating information in podcast fandoms?
Usually with podcasts, you can go off of official art and or descriptions from the podcast. In the case of malevolent, hardly any characters, aside from the eldritch monsters that John likes to describe in detail, have a solid description of their looks. that’s why you get so many different variations of Noel and Oscar. Ofc there are context clues that can help you inform your design choices (or just context. like Oscar’s Scottish accent and the Butcher’s Irish accent. he may even have been described as being Irish but idk that’s besides the point, you can tell).
But even then you can play with it, like how I made Oscar mixed Scottish and Jamaican. And honestly! sometimes you can ignore it! like with Gordon from red valley, who I already had a design I liked before he was described as being pale and even implied to look white. but like I said ! you can have fun with it !
I also sometimes check voice actors, because in some instances you can’t tell someone’s ethnicity from their voice alone, and I’d hate to misinterpret their character because I couldn’t pick up on that. that’s more so a concern when the voice actor is POC tho. With malevolent tho it’s all done by Harlan, who is white, so I think headcanoning characters as different ethnicities is more important, and also way more fun.
Oh also! fandom wikis are a good place to double check. cus they’d definitely have something like that you may have missed- like something from an interview or the character’s full name, which can sometimes indicate their ethnicity ( like Parker Yang from malevolent, only shows up as a corpse in the show but important enough to Arthur that he’s still a fan favorite to make content about)
ghugh I’m rambling- I’d say the majority of the time you’re free to do whatever, just be open to change your design if descriptions come up later on (I’d say more importantly if they’re described to be POC, cus like with Gordon I think my design for him with more Afro centric features looks way cooler and feels more like him than anything I could come up with that would be more canon compliant). Also you can go off common fanon designs, but those are just mutually agreed upon and it’s not wrong to go against that. Like with the Magnus Archives there are no official designs and they let the people make whatever designs they please.
OKAY IG TLDR- do what you want, keep your ears open for character descriptions when listening, double check with character wikis or their voice actors, don’t be afraid to make more POC characters even of the cast is played by mostly white people because the more diverse cast the more fun and interesting your art will be.
#SORRRYYY just know you should be fine#ask#and sometimes it’s just really obvious. like Gloria from midnight burger. undeniably Mexican American#and Casper from the same podcast describes himself as a straight white man#and also he acts like one so yknow#also white voice actor = more options for different designs#POC voice actor = a more concrete option for their design#like Teddy from Tmagp. has a black voice actor so you’ll most definitely want to show that thru your design#but with Celia from tmagp- her voice actor is white but you have a LOT of ethnically diverse designs out there which I think is very fun#I hope this is coherent

being in art school and having basically 0 knowledge about christianity whatsoever is so funny at this point i think you could tell me literally anything was an allegory for jesus and i'd just believe you
#my ass has been to church like twice in my entire life so my peers are like 'this is a biblical allegory' and im like yeah ok sure#makes art history class very annoying tho because everyone just assumes you can look at a stained glass window and know who all the guys ar#also sometimes people will be like this image depicts the story of david or peter or some random other biblical name#and then just. not elaborate. because apparently we all know the stories of every biblical guy who ever existed.#who is peter and why is he in the church window. please#and i dont even have an EXCUSE bc like both ethnically and like in basic practice i am christian. i celebrate christmas or whatever#my parents both just fucking hated church so much as children they were like nah were not doing that#and now i have a deficiency in Identifying White Men In Paintings apparently.#sigh. sorry just got a 5 out of 13 on an art history quiz feeling GREAT

Ok, so I just want to get the general fandom consensus on what they think Jason's ethnicity is, because during DITF he though Lady Shiva was a viable option for his birth mom
#jason todd#batman#batfam#red hood#dc comics#ditft#dc#I'm trying to figure out if the 80s writers were just being dumb or they meant to imply that Jason was ethnically ambiguous#usually he's drawn as white#but so is Dick and Damian even though they're canonically brown#(Dick is half Romani and Damian is a quarter Arab and a quarter chineese)#but maybe Dick and Damian are also just white passing#tim drake#dick grayson#bruce wayne#damian wayne#duke thomas#robin jason todd#robin#lady shiva

Im ngl some people need to learn the words “what is your ethnicity” and not “are you white” “are you mixed” “are you purebreed” “what are you” “are you sure you’re not mixed you don’t look like the stereotype of your ethnicity I made up in my head can you do a 23andme for me to make me feel better about it”
#@ anon these statements are not me dogwalking you I just can’t tell you how often I get questions about my ethnicity#without anyone just straight up asking. and yes you also should probably stop asking random people if they’re white

I keep seeing the odd post here and there mentioning that Ballister Blackheart is white in the Nimona comic and it hurts my heart a little each time I see somebody say that bc he’s actually not! Ballister Blackheart is canonically Asian in the comic, he is East Asian and simply has light skin.
I just find it saddening and wrong (granted I’m white myself so maybe it’s not my place to have an opinion on) to erase a character who is canonically a poc just because they have light skin :/
This is not a diss to people who didn’t know or people that were mistaken, that’s sort of the reason I’m making this post, so more people can know the truth rather than be misinformed or assume incorrectly.
(Context of the photo attached is that it is from a QnA Nate did on the Nimona comic years ago)
Edit: added alt text of everything written in the photo

#ig ppl default to the idea that a character who had an ethnicity change resulting in them being a poc means they were originally white#and not possibly a different ethnicity that is also nonwhite#but ballister has always been Asian#his ethnicity was just changed so he is East Asian in the comic and South Asian in the movie#(most likely to better resemble his va riz ahmed who is Pakistani)#ig ppl see movie ballister who has darker skin and then assume comic ballister with lighter skin is white#also possibly bc ethnic features are more obscured with the simpler comic artstyle#there were points in the book where he was paper light so I understand the assumption to some extent ig#but there’s still something so…. weird abt assuming that he’s white since some poc have lighter skin#also the more recent the art you can see nates style better develop his skin tone#nimona#nimona movie#nimona comic#nimona book#nimona graphic novel#ballister blackheart#ballister boldheart#nimona ballister#nd stevenson#nate stevenson#when will my boy beat the white allegations#also lmk if you think anything I’ve said is out of line lol I was debating even posting abt this bc it’s not really my conversation#also pls read the graphic novel if you haven’t already it’s so good !! ok gn

why are you determined to make this joke work sir
middle-aged male tourist at the museum, during a discussion about the cafe nearby and how I recommend their hot chocolate: what's your last name?
me, thinking he's having trouble reading my name tag: oh, it's Surname
him: is that Irish?
me: well, it can be short for Longer Irish Name Containing Surname, but for my family it's English from-
him: if you were Irish, we'd know what was in that hot chocolate! haha! ;)
me: ...ah. well, I have to go relieve my colleague upstairs now, so enjoy the rest of your day!
him, still in tones of high jocularity: what about your boss? I bet he's Irish! what's his last name?
me: ooookay have a nice day bye!
#museums#museum work#I actually AM of Irish descent along with many other sub-ethnicities of White Person#like fifth-generation so pretty standard for a lot of Americans#obviously I don't claim any sort of Irish identity; we assimilated hard#but I feel like anything would have counted for this asshole#(I'm not like Offended- I have no grounds to be; I'm not Irish)#(I just think it's a tired joke)#(also there are areas here even now where you WILL get punched for it. just saying)

I'm bored so imma share my ethnicity headcanons for the batfam. If you want the tldr version just read the bolded text lol
Bruce - WASP (White Anglo-Saxon Protestant) American, Irish, and Dutch Jewish
The Wayne family has been in Gotham for centuries and has stayed mostly WASP, the few exceptions before Martha were French, German, or Dutch typically. Martha comes from Gotham's Kane family and it is an Irish Jewish family that was established over a century ago. Her mother was from a wealthy Jewish Dutch family that fled in the early stages of WWII.
Dick - mostly French Senti (Manouche) and Mexican Caló Romani, but also has Hungarian Boyash and British Romanichal Romani ancestry, English, WASP American, Hungarian, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Indigenous Mexican, West African, and North African. Looks like a lot listed out like that but it really just comes from being from a nomadic culture and from the Americas. He just considers himself Romani, Sinti/Caló if pressed. You won't get the whole "I'm 1/8 Italian" thing from him.
Dick's mother (Mary) was from France and had a lot of French/other Western European ancestry as well as her Sinti ancestry. Her family was culturally and ethnically Sinti Romani and had been in France primarily for centuries. Her mother was a dirty blonde with Eurocentric features and her father looked more Mediterranean.
Dick's father (John) was culturally Mexican Caló Romani because of his Mexican mother (Maria Perfecta). Her family has been in Mexico for a long time, having immigrated primarily in the 17th and 18th centuries. As such, she also had Indigenous Mexican (primarily from Central Mexico, so Otomí, Purepecha, Nahua, Cora (among others but those were the first examples that came to mind)), West African, and Iberian ancestry, as well, primarily. Her family mostly stuck to Central Mexico, some distant lineages went either North or South.
John's father (William Grayson) also had Romani ancestry because his father, William Cobb, was Boyash and Romanichal. Cobb's mother was the daughter of Hungarian Boyash immigrants and his father immigrated from London. Grayson was disconnected from his Romani heritage, however, and was raised collectively by Haly's Circus as a multicultural orphan. Grayson's mother was Amelia Crowne, who came from a wealthy WASP American family. Due to the disconnect from his father's side, most of John's Romani cultural practices come from his mother.
Bonus: just for funsies I had Dick be born in Brazil, he's not Brazilian ethnically nor culturally, but he does speak Brazilian Portuguese and has Brazilian citizenship. Haly's also picked up a Brazilian performer around the time Dick was born. They were the honorary uncle/nephew duo of Dick's early childhood and he made sure Dick grew up speaking Portuguese correctly (John was born in Portugal and spoke conversational European Portuguese). Thus, Dick has Brazilian, American, Mexican, and French citizenship.
Jason - Irish, Italian, Greek, WASP American, French Canadian, and Anglo-Australian
Jason's father (Willis) was born to a single teen mother in Gotham. She was the granddaughter of Greek immigrants, descendant of Irish immigrants a little further back, and has general WASP-y American ancestry as well from having been in the Northeastern US for centuries. She likely also has Dutch, German, French, and Indigenous American ancestry as well, but those are generations removed and irrelevant. Willis's father was never in his life, but he had French Canadian grandparents on his mother's side and WASP American on his father's.
Jason's mother (Sheila) was the granddaughter of a WWII vet and an Australian war bride on her mother's side. Her grandfather was the son of Southern Italian immigrants and her grandmother was an Anglo-Australian primarily, with 1 Irish immigrant grandfather. Sheila's father was basically just WASP American with a somewhat recent German immigrant grandmother.
Despite being the whitest mfer, he was a polyglot from an early age because he was always out interacting with his community. So he is very conversational/fluent in Puerto Rican Spanish (has been mistaken as Puerto Rican as a result, too, and this was him when he was told he wasn't actually Puerto Rican lol), knows quite a bit of Yiddish, Cantonese, Tagalog, and other languages. He picks up languages quickly.
Tim - German, WASP American, White Cuban (mostly Spanish, French, and Chinese)
Tim's father (Jack) is mostly WASP American and German, as his mother's parents were German immigrants. The Drake family is a more recent addition to Gotham's elite, but the ancestors had been in the Northeast (New York and north New Jersey specifically) for generations.
Tim's mother (Janet) is the daughter of Cuban immigrants, both parents having left Cuba as children. Janet's mother (Emilia) was mostly of Spanish and French ancestry, her family were Cuban elites that were able to recover their wealth in NYC. Janet's father (Alfonso) was biracial, his father was Spanish and his mother was mostly Chinese. His family was also very wealthy, but lost most of it in the exile. They had to rebuild their business in Miami.
Tim speaks Spanish, but not nearly as fluently as Jason. Janet mostly spoke English to him. Tim grew up mostly monolingual, the languages he speaks later are learned through study primarily. His Spanish, thus, is a mix of Cuban, Mexican (Dick), Textbook, and Puerto Rican slang and profanity (Jason).
Cass - Han Chinese (mainland China (South) and Malaysia), Malay, Irish, and WASP American
Cass's mother (Lady Shiva) was born in Malaysia to a Malaysian Chinese mother and a Chinese immigrant father. They moved to Guangzhou when she was very young. Her Malaysian Chinese mother had some Malay ancestry as well, but she was primarily Chinese.
Cass's father (David Cain) is the son of a Northern Irish immigrant and WASP Americans. That's about all I got, I don't give a shit about him lol
Damian - Arab (specifically Jordanian circa like half a millennium ago; Palestinian and Yemeni), Han Chinese, Miao Chinese, plus Bruce's ethnicities above
Damian's mother (Talia) was half Arab and half Chinese from both parents. Her father (Ra's) was born in what is now Jordan to parents from the region, one of which (his mother) was Han Chinese originally from Western China. His father was ethnically Southern Levant, Palestinian/Jordanian. Talia's mother (Melisande) was the daughter of an American mother with a Palestinian father and a Yemeni mother. Melisande's father was the American son of parents from Yunnan, he was Miao.
See Bruce above.
Duke - African American, Gullah, (maybe Mandika, it depends)
I don't fully understand what's going on with his bio dad (Gnomon), so Imma just ignore him and just do his mother. If he's an immortal metahuman, he's Mandinka from Senegal. If he's a non-human immortal being, then he's that ig.
Duke's mother (Elaine) is Gullah. She was born and raised in Georgia and later moved to Gotham, but she was very connected to her community and culture. She raised Duke in the Gullah culture at home, as well. She also taught Duke the Gullah language, it's his first language. As Duke grew up, the home became more bi-cultural (Doug is a Gotham native, so not Gullah and thus had different traditions and culture to share).
Steph - Scottish, Polish, Lithuanian, and Black
Steph's father (Arthur) is originally from Chicago, his father was the son of Scottish immigrants and his mother was the daughter of Polish immigrants.
Steph's mother (Crystal) is a native Gothamite, her father was unknown to her (he was mostly WASP American, but he did have a black grandmother) and her mother was the daughter of Lithuanian immigrants.
That's about it, I didn't include Alfred bc I just see him as ethnically English, maybe some Celtic ancestry (Welsh/Cymry and/or Cornish) and from the South of England.
Anyway, those are my headcanons! Let me know what you think if you want.
#batfam headcanons#dick grayson#bruce wayne#jason todd#tim drake#cassandra cain#damian wayne#duke thomas#stephanie brown#ethnicity headcanons#just some bonus info bc i've said before that the batfam member i related to the most is jason#part of the reason i don't particularly like the mexican jason hc is bc im mexican american myself and i dont need that man#to be even more like me than necessary lol sorry jason#no shade to mexican jason truthers btw its purely a me thing! keep doing you!#imma keep the boy white but have him be like the best most natural spanish speaker in the family bc i think its funny#mexican grayson grandmother is 1000% just bc of the dia de muertos variant cover btw and bc he's my fave#yes there's a difference between fave and most relatable that causes me to have more joy in one mexican hc over the other#i don't try to make sense of it im not my therapist#also half-cuban tim! i don't think i've seen it before (could be wrong) but i think it's fun and makes some sense#these characters are american there is going to be immigration all over these headcanons it comes free with the brainrot

i've been thinking a lot today about how hershel would look "realistically"... so here are some sketches of him! i think he looks very handsome :)
#dandy's doodles#professor layton#hershel layton#ethnically speaking i'd say he's mostly jewish but has some black ancestry as well#it's funny... he has the same skin tone as luke but i've never read hershel as being just white. i wonder why#anyway. i tried to suit his actual in-game appearance while also incorporating the background i think he has#small deep-set eyes which are so dark they appear nearly black... brown hair in thick curls...#rounded and slightly hooked nose... prominent lower lip...#giving him thick eyebrows was incredibly tempting but he has thin eyebrows when we've seen them#so i gave him those fluffy but almost invisible eyebrows i've seen on a couple of fellow jews#lala. anyway. enjoy my boy. i actually colorpicked him for once

something about the tiktok ban that i haven't really seen people here talking about is the experience of tiktok users not from the usa, which was, as far as i can tell, on the whole, very positive. it was actually really nice to, for a short period of time, be on a major social media network and able to interact with people across the world without usamericans constantly inserting themselves into every conversation.
usamericans kind of take over people's fyp regardless of where you're from. this is partly to do with the fact that the creators fund is only available to usamericans so most of the shitty content farms are from the us. then there's also the cultural aspect of the fact that being a citizen of the most powerful empire in the world is a significant privilege, and also a privilege that 99% of usamericans are seemingly unable to acknowledge, plus the us centrism and exceptionalism, plus the constant need to cast themselves as the underdog, and, well. it's annoying.
so, like. everything of what i've seen (which is not to say that other opinions don't exist, just that i haven't seen them) is that it was really nice when the usamericans were gone, and it kind of sucks that they're back.
#tiktok ban#<- for those who are (very justifiably) sick of hearing about this#anyway also important to note that 99% of what ive seen has been from europeans canadians and australians#and i can guess that for people from asian african and south american countries it was probably just their feed being taken over by#other annoying english speakers rather than usamericans#and the 'commonwealth tiktok' thing (especially the fact that its referring to specifically uk canada and australia#and NO OTHER COMMONWEALTH COUNTRIES)#is uh. not great!#so im not saying like. magical utopia where everyone was equal#but im just saying that. idk there is no global major social media that isn't overrun with usamericans#and for about a day there was#anyway would be cool to hear from other non-usamericans!#especially if you're not european nor from from a european settler state#question is there a specific word/phrase that would include the citizens of countries like the usa/canada/australia/etc#but not the indigenous people of those places?#and no just saying white doesnt work because in those countries non-indigenous minority ethnic groups are still there under#the authority of a colonial government#and also im talking about privilege along the axis of nationality here as opposed to race/ethnicity#and the question of nationality gets complicated when we're talking about specifically the indigenous people of#an area currently controlled by a settled colonial state#ALSO also in regards to the fact that the whole thing was a trump propaganda stunt#and that there's now censorship of things trump doesnt like#its yet another example of how everyone else in the world gets directly affected by us politics#despite the fact that in this case the social media isnt even a us company#and not to say that it doesnt also suck for usamericans#many of whom voted for harris#but also. at least you got a vote.#the rest of us just have to live with the fact that whoever you guys elect will have a direct impact on our lives#and usamericans just don't experience this. like e.g. british elections have no impact on your lives#but your elections have a massive impact on our lives (and even worse for countries in the global south)

i know I've mentioned my interpretation of mizu's gender a million times on here but i don't think i ever fully elaborated on it.
so on that note i just wanna ramble about that for a bit. basically, it's my reading of the show that mizu is nonbinary, so let me dig into that.
putting the rest under the cut because it ended up being pretty long lol. also here have a cute mizu pic of her being happy and most at ease with herself, symbolised by her letting her hair down. <3 ok let's proceed.

thus, when i refer to mizu as nonbinary, i am interpreting mizu as a woman, but not ONLY a woman. not strictly a woman. she is also a man. she is also neither of these things, she is something in between, while at the same time she is none of these at all. i've said as much many times, but i just don't want people to think that when i say nonbinary, it inherently means a "third androgynous gender" that essentially turns the gender binary into a gender trinary. not only is that going against what the term nonbinary was crafted for (to go against rigid boxes and categorisation of gender identities), but also, not all nonbinary people fall under that category or definition, and that's definitely not the way i interpret mizu.
okay before i go deeper i'd just like to address some important things. first of all, this post is an analysis of canon, and thus everything i am arguing for is about my own interpretation of the show, and not some baseless projected headcanon i am projecting onto the character. please remember there is a difference between an interpretation (subjective; interpretations will differ from viewer to viewer, but ultimately it is firmly rooted in evidence taken from the source material) VS a headcanon (unrelated and often even contrary to what is presented in canon; opinions wildly differ and they cannot be argued for because there is no canonical evidence to back it up).
ALSO please note that nonbinary is an umbrella term. this means that it applies to a vast range of gender identities. other identities that fall under the nonbinary umbrella include agender, bigender, genderfluid, and so on. however, it's my personal preference to use the term nonbinary as it is, simply because i'm not a fan of microlabels (more power to you if you do like them and find they suit you more though!).
also, before anyone fights me on this, let me clarify further that gender means something different to everyone. it's not your biological sex or physical characteristics. but at the same time, gender is not mere presentation. you can be a trans woman and still present masculine—either because you're closeted and forced to, or because you just want to—and either way, that doesn't take away from your identity as a woman. same goes for trans men. if you're a trans man but you wear skirts and don't bind or don't get top surgery, that doesn't make you any less of a man. because gender non-conformity exists, and does not only apply to cis people! some lesbians are nonbinary and prefer using he/him pronouns while dressing masculinely, but that doesn't mean they're a man, or that they're any less of a lesbian. neither does this mean that they're a cis woman.
the thing about queer identities in general is that, like i said, they mean something different to everyone, because how you identify—regardless of your biological attributes and fashion or pronouns—is an extremely personal experience. so a nonbinary person and a gnc cis woman's experiences might have plenty of overlap, but what distinguishes between the two is up to the individual. there's no set requirements to distinguish you as one or the other, but it's up to you to decide what you identify as, based on what you feel. either way, by simply identifying yourself as anything under the LGBTQ+ umbrella, you are already communicating to the world that you are not what a conservative, cisheteronormative society wants you to be.
which is why i find all this queer infighting on labels to be so ridiculous. because we're all fighting the same fight; the common enemy is a societal structure that divides us into set roles and expectations purely based on our biological parts. that's why biological essentialism in the queer community is a fucking disease. because by arguing that women are inherently weak and fragile and soft and gentle and must be protected from evil ugly men, while men are inherently strong and angry and violent and exploitative of women, these people are advocating for the same fucked up system that marginalises and abuses women as well as effeminate and/or gay men.
anyway. i'm going on a tangent. this was meant to be a blue eye samurai post. so yeah back to that— the point i'm trying to make is that there's no singular way to identify as anything, as everyone's views on gender, especially their own, is specific and personal to the individual.
so with that being said, yes you can definitely interpret mizu as a gnc cis woman and that's a totally valid reading of the text. however, interpreting her as nonbinary or transmasc also doesn't take away from her experiences with misogyny and female oppression, because nonbinary and transmasc folks also experience these things.
me, personally, i view her as nonbinary but not necessarily or not always transmasc because i still believe femininity and womanhood is a very inherent part of who mizu is. for example, from what we've seen, she does not like binding. it does not give her gender euphoria, but is instead very uncomfortable for her both physically and mentally, and represents her suppressing her true self. which is why when she "invites the whole" of herself, she stands completely bare in front of the fire, breasts unbound and hair untied. when she is on the ship heading to a new land in the ending scene, she is no longer hiding her neck and the lack of an adam's apple. we can thus infer that mizu does not have body dysmorphia. she is, in fact, comfortable in her body, and relies on it extremely, because her body is a weapon. instead, what mizu hates about herself is her face—her blue eyes. she hates herself for her hybridised racial identity, hates herself for being a racial Other. hates that she has no home in her homeland. thus it is important to note that these are not queer or feminist themes, but postcolonial ones.*
* and as a tiny aside on this subject, i really do wish more of the fandom discussion would talk about this more. it's just such an essential part to reading her character. like someone who's read homi k bhabha's location of culture and has watched this show, PLEASE talk to me so we can ramble all about how the show is all about home and alienation from community. please. okay anyway—
nevertheless, queer and feminist themes (which are not mutually exclusive by the way!) are still prevalent in her story, though they are not the main issue that she is struggling with. but she does struggle with it to some extent, and we see this especially during her marriage with mikio, where we see her struggle in women's domestic spaces.
on the other hand, though, she finds no trouble or discomfort in being a man or being around other men—even naked ones—and does not seem stifled by living as one, does not seem all that bothered or uncomfortable navigating through men's spaces. contrast this to something like disney's mulan (1998), where we do see mulan struggle in navigating through men's spaces, as she feels uncomfortable being around so many men, always feeling like she doesn't belong and that she's inherently different from them. mizu has no such experiences like this, as her very personality and approach to life is what can be categorised as typically "masculine". she is straightforward and blunt. her first meeting with mikio, she tells him straight to his face that he's old while frowning and raising a brow at him. she approaches problems with her muscles and fists (or swords), rather than with her words or mind. compare this with mulan, who, while well-trained by the end of the movie, still uses her sharp wits rather than brute strength. this is a typically "feminine" approach. it's also the approach akemi relies on throughout the show—through her intelligence and persuasive tongue, she navigates the brothel with ease. mizu, in contrast to someone like mulan and akemi, struggles with womanhood and femininity, and feels detached from it.
thus, in my opinion, mizu is not simply a man, nor is she simply a woman. she is both. man and woman. masculine and feminine. she has to accept both, rather than suppress one or the other. her name means water. fluid.
as a side note, while i do believe mizu is nonbinary, i also primarily use she/her pronouns for her, but this is a personal preference. i find it's easier to use in fanfic (singular they is confusing to write stories with, but again, that's just my feelings on it, and this is coming from someone who uses they/they pronouns). i also lean towards she/her because it's what the creators and all the official promotional copywriting of the show uses. and even though i am a "death to the author" enjoyer, i feel that when interpreting things that are left open-ended, it does help to look at the creators' take on things. also because, in general, being nonbinary simply doesn't necessitate the use of they/them pronouns. nonbinary is not just a third gender. it's about breaking the binary, in any which way, and that's exactly what mizu does, constantly.
also, i'd also like to mention that one of show's head of story even referred to her with the term "nonbinary", rather than simply "androgynous" (see pic below). and it's possible this could be a slip up on his part, in which he believes the terms are interchangeable (they're not btw), but regardless i find it a very interesting word choice, and one that supports my argument.

so anyway yeah that's my incredibly long rambling post.
TL;DR nonbinary mizu rights 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 congrats if you reached the end of this btw. also ily. unless you're a TERF in which case fuck off. ok i'm done.
#shut up haydar#fandom.rtf#meta dissertations.pdf#mizu blue eye samurai#mizu bes#blue eye samurai#blue eye samurai meta#sorry if this is redundant btw i just cant stop thinking thoughts :3#btw i am a mixed* southeast asian who is also nonbinary. just in case that's important context#by mixed* i mean i'm asian+asian but diff ethnicities lol. i dont have a white bone in my body god bless<3#my whiteness is purely learned thru cultural osmosis + bcs my parents taught me english as a first language (boooo 🍅🍅🍅)#also i live in the global south so i think EYE know a thing or two about being gnc in a society of rigid awful gender roles‼️#so likeee i think its ridiculous that its an either-or thing#mizu can be nonbinary while still being a woman of colour ¯\_(ツ)_/¯#also ummm as much as i love queer themes and gay people i wish people would talk more about the racial otherness / community aspect#as mentioned in the post above#you don't need to read bhabha's whole book btw but just take a look at some of his ideas and you'll get what im talking about#like the fact that the fandom mostly ignores those themes in the story makes me feel like :( :/#cuz to me THATS the thing that spoke to me most and its a shame that its just not talked about enough#i mean i know why thats likely the case. but still.#whoops im rambling again 🤪
