Energy Levels-Batboy AU-DCxDP
Previous | First | Next
Dealing with Danny's energy level has gotten 10 times worse. Dick remembered dealing with Beast's bursts of energy but even he got tired after a good wrestle with anyone willing to take on a bear. But Danny's new full transformations are smaller than Beast's transformations with twice the energy. If Dick wanted to get sleep he needed reinforcements.
So a trip to Titans Tower was needed. Before Dick could park Danny had rolled down a window and flew to the landing pad on the roof.
Batboy had certainly changed since his regeneration. The new wings have done a lot. Dick didn't get it when Danny described the process of blending dragon and bat muscle and bone formations. Dick didn't even know Danny had a dragon friend. Dick also didn't mention that sometimes Danny looked like a gargoyle when his wings rested on his back and not around him like normal.
Still, Danny was happy. Well...happier. Sometimes Danny would still blankly stare out at the city at night deep in thought. Like he was searching for something but knew he'd never find it.
Danny also didn't call him dad again. Dick never mentioned it. Danny did have mixed feelings about parents.
When Dick finally made it to the top floor Danny had already pounced on Gar. The two were in the middle of a tug-of-war as wolves. It wasn't a fair battle either as Beast was twice as big.
Wally almost felt bad for encouraging Danny. Almost. He took pictures of Beast being able to drag Danny around by the rope.
But there is a funny thing about wolf instincts. Adult wolves will always give in to pups. If a pup wants something the adult will let them have it. It's called puppy privilege. Like it or not Gar eventually surrendered the rope and let Danny fun off with it.
"Sorry, he's been like for a solid week." Dick immediately apologized.
"We are just glad he is alright. He's certainly more spirited than last time. Although his size-shifting last time left us confused." Starfire said patting Danny on the head.
The wolf dropped the rope before bounding back over to Gar and picking another fight.
Honestly, Garfield was thrilled to finally have another animal shapeshifting buddy. He considered asking Nightwing to let Batboy be his sidekick. Make him the new Beastboy.
After a few more rounds Batboy finally settled down after a race around the training course. The team managed to get some data on him after the other Titans arrived. Tim was the one to type out the data and send it out.
The others were just excited to have a potential new member like Supergirl. There was a debate however on whether Batboy was closer to being their generation's Beastboy or if he's technically a Robin.
All the while Dick took a long nap without Danny there to run or fly around the house to wake him.
*elsewhere in Gotham City*
A tiny dirty kitten trembled in the cold rain. Her sharp green eyes tried to see through the wet smog. A weak mew couldn't break through the sound of rain on the pavement.
"Oh, poor thing." A voice broke through the thundering force that pelted her.
A pair of chilled hands lifted her off the ground and tucked her into a jacket and carried her away.

(The Bad Batch) A Rainy Evening With Him
Author's Note: Happy Bad Batch eve! I hope you enjoy!
Warning: Storms, Established Relationship, Fluff
The air on Pabu was rather humid. Well, it always was. But you detected something else in the air late that afternoon in the middle of a project. You paused your task to look up at the sky, noting the gray clouds that were gradually rolling in. The wind picked up and tugged at a nearby banner so hard that you could hear the fabric whipping repeatedly.
The citizens of Pabu began to pack up and head indoors. Boats were making their way in for the evening. No one was panicked. There was no rush. Everyone was moving in an unhurried, orderly manner, but with purpose.
You looked around for a particular Bad Batcher in hopes of finding him before the rainstorm began...
Hunter:
It seemed as if Hunter had been looking for you too. You saw him standing at the base of a stairwell, tilting his head to search the crowd of people making their way to their homes. When he locked eyes with you, that familiar smile crossed his features. He took your hand, drawing you closer to him.
"Storm's coming," he said. "But you already knew that. it's nothing major, but it's not the kind of weather to be working in."
"Ah, so that's why everyone's making their exit," you said, glancing around. Hunter nodded and began leading you up the stairs, off toward where the Batch's quarters were.
Just as you made it to the patio, a few droplets fell on your skin. You and Hunter both walked under the cover of the patio, watching as more drops fell, speckling the stone floor outside. It was a quaint little patio with a cushioned swing. You gave Hunter's hand a tug and went over to sink into the cushion comfortably. He followed the unspoken request, pressing his leg against yours as you both sat side-by-side on the swing.
Hunter put an arm around you, and you leaned into the contact. His warm scent mingled with the salty sea air, like a sandalwood candle.
"I love this weather," you admitted. "Sunny days are great, but there's something about a little rainstorm once in a while."
He nodded in agreement. "The air smells good."
After that, neither of you felt the need to say anything more.
He planted a kiss on your head, and the two of you enjoyed the wind and the sound of the rain falling on the top of the patio, until it was time to go inside.
Wrecker:
You saw Wrecker on the docks, having just come in from fishing on a boat. He smiled when he saw you, strutting over to give you a big hug in greeting.
"They said there's a storm, so we are done for the day," he informed you, setting you down gently. His hand didn't release yours. "We should probably get back before the rain hits."
"Good idea," you replied with a nod. The two of you moved with the steady flow of the crowd as they headed back to their homes. There was no hurry, even as the wind continued to pick up and blow palm tree leaves around. By the time you reached the first stairwell, a few droplets of rain fell on your cheeks and hand.
"Oh, it's starting!" you remarked, showing him the drop on your hand. Wrecker grinned as a few fell on him also, and the two of you automatically began to move just a little faster. The crowds had cleared for the most part, so you could pick up your pace.
At one point, Wrecker just lifted you up and carried you up the final set of stairs, with the both of you laughing in glee as the rain started to pour. He barreled into the Bad Batch's living quarters, quickly plopped you down on the nearest cushion, and shut the door. Your body shook with laughter as you got to work on gathering some blankets and pillows. Wrecker helped you make a little spot for the two of you to curl up under some blankets and watch the rain.
Wrecker held you securely against his chest, his arm extended, so that you could rest your head on it beside him. The rain began its barrage on the roof and against the windows, but it began to fade into a dull sound in the distance as you focused on Wrecker's breathing and the low rumble of his voice as you both talked.
Tech:
You made your way to the one place you knew Tech would be. Normally, he'd be out working on projects somewhere across Pabu; but after the Bad Batch's latest mission, the current ship the squad occupied needed some fine-tuning.
Okay, perhaps a little more than fine-tuning.
The thud of your shoes on the ramp paused as you stopped to take in the state of the weather once more. Things had certainly moved along since you began your trek to the ship. Rain clouds cast the island in a gray darkness, though you could still see the sun peeking out in the distance.
One drop plummeting to the sand turned into two, and then that turned into many. Pretty soon, it became a downpour. You closed your eyes to enjoy one more gust of wind before climbing the rest of the way up the ramp. You walked down the hall of the dark ship rounded the corner to see the incredible mind himself seated in the cockpit.
He seemed to be running a diagnostic to finalize the repair process on his datapad. He heard your approach and looked up.
"Oh, hello." He greeted you in a light, airy tone as he adjusted his goggles. "I saw the storm, and I was just about to comm you."
You smiled affectionately at his concern. "Well, I'm here. How's it looking?" You leaned over to peek at his datapad over his shoulder, and he scrolled through the results of the scan for you to see.
"It took me all morning and this afternoon, but everything seems to be in order."
"That's great. I'm glad to hear that." You took a seat in the co-pilot's chair, watching the ripples of rainwater pounding against the shield of the ship. "It's so beautiful out."
Tech's gaze found yours again, waiting for you to elaborate.
"I just like rain every now and then. The air smells so fresh, and the wind feels kind of exhilarating."
"I can relate in finding beauty in it," he agreed. "Although, I am glad to have completed the repairs before the shift in weather. It would've been...inconvenient."
You nodded. "Certainly." While Tech went back to finalizing his work, you smiled at an idea that popped into your head. You rose from the chair and headed into the back to grab some blankets and pillows from the bunks. When you returned, Tech looked up curiously to see you arranging them just so on the floor beside some crates in the hall.
You extended your hand toward him, motioning for him to join you. "Now that you're done, come sit with me?"
Tech typed something out lightning fast on his datapad before shutting it off. To your delight, he sat down against the crates and opened his arm for you to scooch in up against his side.
"This is...nice," he said, gazing down at you with a soft smile on his You breathed in his scent, exhaling contentedly as you rested your head against his shoulder.
With the rain pounding against the hull of the ship, you two spent the rest of the stormy evening just talking and exchanging a kiss or two.
Echo:
You were already inside the Bad Batch's quarters, shaking the rain from you, when the front door opened. Echo entered, glancing around as if he were looking for you. When he saw you, his whole expression lightened.
"I had a feeling you'd be here," he said. "That storm rolled in pretty fast."
"Yeah, it sure did," you replied, taking his hand in yours and giving him a soft kiss on the lips in greeting. "Isn't it nice, though? We get to relax for the rest of the evening."
He seemed entranced by the kiss and nodded. "Uh-huh, very nice."
"Want to get cozy on the couch?"
Echo nodded at the proposition, and you snatched up a throw blanket from the back of the couch and draped it over the both of you as you curled up on the couch together.
You laid your head on Echo's chest, listening to his heartbeat thrum within it. His hand rested on your back, occasionally patting it gently. Your gazes were fixed on the nearest glass window where you saw the wind carrying all sorts of tropical leaves in a flurry. The rain continued to escalate, and you sighed deeply in contentment.
Neither you nor Echo felt the need to speak for a while. You simply enjoyed the sounds of the storm outside and the close contact. At some point, the rise and fall of Echo's chest became slower, deeper. You realized that he had fallen asleep, and you smiled to yourself. Planting a kiss on his chin before settling back in, you let your own breathing slow. It wasn't long before your eyes grew so heavy that they fell shut, and you fell asleep.
Crosshair:
As soon as you'd heard that everyone was heading home for the evening, you started looking for one person in particular. Crosshair found you first, approaching you after you'd hardly begun your own search.
"It's nothing serious," he told you when you took his hand. "But it's nearly the end of the day anyway, so people are going home."
"Works for me," you replied, giving his hand a squeeze. He began to lead the way through the throngs of people making their way toward the steps. You relished the way his hand felt in yours, and the way the wind blew so fiercely against your skin, and the way it felt like you were breathing in the freshest air with each gust.
You and Crosshair made it to the Bad Batch's quarters and went inside just as the rain began to fall. You couldn't help but remain at the doorway with your hand resting on the glass, watching the gray clouds rolling over the island and he way the trees danced in the wind.
Crosshair had initially walked halfway across the room, but when he paused and noticed where you stood, he backtracked and returned to your side. He propped the door open and slid down to sit right in the doorway, looking up at you in an unspoken offer.
You smiled and scooched in next to him, breathing a sigh as you rested your head against his shoulder and felt another gust of wind blow over you. It made you shiver, and yet you felt so cozy.
"Thank you," you whispered, and you felt Crosshair's chin rest on your head in response. His arm wrapped around you gently and took hold of your hand.
A comfortable silence fell over you both as you watched the storm. You would exchange the occasional kiss, and you both stayed like that for some time, enjoying each other's company and also the weather...

Tumblr media
Jing Yuan loved when the weather in Xianzhou were set to become rainy throughout the entire day. It would mean a certain set of events were more than certainly bound to happen.
He would be able to avoid being at the Divine of Foresight and doing paperwork with easy accesibility for everyone else to come and find him, because no one likes to travel back and forth in the rain.
He could stay home when he negotiaties the terms with both Qingzu and the other commissioners on a set amount of papers he has to look through to further advance the Xianzhou.
He would have your undivided attention (if he manages to shoo both Yanqing and Mimi away) because you too, liked to stay inside when it rained.
And as he expected, the first and second point came to pass without any trouble, but as he slid the door open announcing that he was home, he was met with silence. He was sure that the rain wouldn't stop Yanqing from traveling to the training grounds and continuing to swing his sword, to which was proven true when he noticed that Yanqings' shoes were missing from the entryway. As Jing Yuan ventured further inside the house, he was able to hear the gentle breeze rustle through the curtains, the wind chimes loudly ringing from the added wind from the pouring rain.
And outside laying on the wooden floor of the veranda while gazing out towards the koi pond in the garden were you. You were just out of reach from the splattering raindrops to hit you, but close enough to hear the rain hit the rocks, roof and pond. You were also clearly awake, Jing Yuan could tell by the hand that is threading through Mimi's mane whose head was resting on top of your stomach, while the upper body was covering your lower half like a blanket.
Truly a serene view, but his third point had yet come to pass because you hadn't even greeted him home.
Which meant that your attention was solely on Mimi and the splattering of rain hitting the ground or pond in front of you. But not him.
So with a small chuckle he made his way over to you, "It's quite saddening to be met with silence when I announce my early return home, you know?" Jing Yuan tells you when he's within earshot, you merely turn your gaze away from the pond to stare at him, eyes crinkling as you give him a smile, "Welcome home, Jing Yuan," you say with a grin, "Although I knew you would come home early."
He knew you were already aware of the fact he would return early, so Jing Yuan doesn't comment any further besides setting down the scrolls he took home to read through beside your head. And as if on instinct, you crane your head up from the ground so Jing Yuan's legs can settle on the spot instead. The general merely places a hand beneath your head to ease the strain on your neck while he finds a comfortable position on the ground before he gently places your head back on his thigh. You hum in affirmation, shuffling a tiny bit to get comfortable.
Mimi lets out a growl at your sudden movements, and you stop moving around while letting out a laugh, ruffling her mane quickly before squishing the cheeks together and making the lion look at you, "Sorry Mimi ~ Did I disturb your nap?" you coo softly, Jing Yuan letting out a snort at the use of baby voice. He uses one hand to open up the scrolls besides him while his other hand is busy twirling your bunched up hair by his thigh through various loops around his fingers, "Mimi may have gotten her nap interrupted, but Jing Yuan is lonely," he coos absentmindely, attention still on the scrolls which makes you let out a laugh.
Letting Mimi's head fall back down onto your stomach, you direct your attention back up at the general, who looks away from the contents of the scroll beside him to cock his head to the side, his usual grin still painting his lips. Your arm reaches up to him, to which Jing Yuan is quick to bend his head so that you can pat his head and thread your fingers through his hair, brushing away the bangs that cover his other eye to get a proper look at him.
"Why is our general acting so cute today, hmm?" you wonder out loud, Jing Yuan freeing his fingers from your hair to cup your cheek, thumb caressing your skin softly, you merely turn your head a bit to kiss the inside of his palm, "Because the general hasn't gotten his words of affirmation for his hard work today," he jokes back.
And as Jing Yuan watches your body shake with constrained laughter, his gaze softens. Breathing in the humid air from the rain that's starting to pour down hard - such serene moments with you could truly only be obtainable by the amount of work he has done over the years to keep Xianzhou peaceful.
As mundane as it is, he's somewhat glad that he's put himself in such a mundane routine for the sakes of moments like these.
"There, there, our cute general has done so well today," you praise, ruffling his hair, "What does he want for a reward for his good work, hmm?" you joke, to which Jing Yuan playfully rolls his eyes, only moving his thigh a bit as a signal to make you arch your neck up so he can lean down further and connect your lips.
He truly loved the rainy days onboard the Xianzhou.

Too Many Beds - [Yandere!Reo x F!Reader]
Tw: Yandere, female reader, long hair, unestablished relationship, brief mentions of injury, suggestive (NO smut), swearing, cringe, etc.
[Bllk Oneshot Masterlist] [Bllk Headcannon Masterlist]
inspired by the reverse tropes
You sat on Reo’s bed, having been invited by the boy for a simple hangout to catch up since you missed class that day due to your leg injury.
“No wayyy seriously!?”
You looked at Reo with wide eyes and an excited smile as he told you about the fight that occurred early at school that morning
“Yea. There was blood everywheree, I think the girl got her nose broken… and she just got her nose job too!”
Reo laughed along with you, never losing focus on the happy glint in your eyes
It’s a shame you weren’t there to see it. Reo worked so hard to get the two to fight. So many hours he spent on call with the both of them, pressing lies and threats to get them both to snap at each other. He wished you could’ve seen it happen in front of your very eyes, his great masterpiece for the day. Would you be proud of him? Praise him? He wishes he could’ve found out. Oh well, there’s always next time.
“HA! Serves her right! She pushed me down the stairs yesterday!"
Reo nodded. He couldn’t agree more. The f[/]cking b[/]tch shouldn’t have even laid eyes on you. No one deserves that pleasure but him. And especially not someone like her. People who don’t acknowledge your grace don’t deserve to walk this earth.
But he also hated himself for not being there for you. He should’ve caught you in his arms, he should’ve never let you get injured. He'll kill the girl for doing something like that to you
Your phone rang; your mother was calling.
“Hm? Oh yea I’m doing good, having fun!”
Reo smiled. He was glad you were enjoying everything he so carefully set up. As you checked in with your mother, he also went through his own notifications, texting a few people.
“Ah, Reo, I think I should get going… It’s already 9pm after all”
WHAT. No- right now? Why? WHY? WHAT WAS HE DOING WRONG?
“Are you sure? It’s raining really badly outside…”
Reo glanced out the window. Rain droplets were flying at and crazy fast speed, loud ping-panging was heard both the roof (since you two were on the top floor) and the windows
“Was it always raining?”
Thank lord the assistants got the text in time.
You tilted your head, covering your phone with your hand
“I uh- think so, we must’ve been to caught up in conversation lol…Actually- Why don’t you just stay the night? Tomorrows a weekend after all! Plus it wouldn’t be wise for you to go home this late. I just want you to be safe.”
You hesitated, before turning back to your phone, asking your mother if it’d be okay to stay over
“Honey, are you sure? Do you really trust this guy? Where are you going to sleep, do you have extra clothing, tooth brushes, towels, are you sure about this?”
Reo nodded frantically at you with a plastered smile
“We have multiple beds on this floor, a guest bathroom that comes with everything you’ll need, and extra clean clothes. I promise you’ll be safe with me.”
Reo spoke loudly, to make sure your mother picked up on what he said.
You relayed it to your mom, asking her again for permission. After a half minute, your face lit up and quickly threw out multiple thank-yous. You shot Reo a quick "👌" and he smiled as he put his hands together
“Great! I’ll get everything setup then”
He tried to keep his voice as stable as possible, but he felt like he was going to die from happiness.
Reo’s heart was beating out of his chest, he could feel his entire body pulse with excitement. You were staying the night, with him. Reo couldn’t stop smiling, he felt like rolling on the floor giggling with excitement, he was ready to die after this night for all he cared.
But he had to keep himself composed in front of you. He could freak out after you left.
“Do you need to shower? I can show you the way”
You nodded as you stood up, leaving your phone on his desk
“The guest bathroom is a bit far… My bathroom’s closer! Would you prefer that?” “Sure, I really don’t mind”
The guest bathroom was really only a room or two down from his.
Reo showed you the way, and grabbed a few of his T-shirts and shorts and handed them to you.
“Pick whatevers most comfortable with you! I hope you don’t mind wearing something that’s mine…” “It’s fine really. No need to be so uptight”
You smiled and waved it off
Reo nearly exploded. He burst into a smile as he tried to squash it down. You didn’t mind wearing something he wore. You didn’t mind. What if he gave you his hoodie? Would you wear that? Oh, he’d give you his skin if you so wanted.
As you showered, Reo headed back to his room. He sat down at the desk where your phone was. And with shaking hands, he picked up your phone and flipped it around in his hands.
You touch your phone everyday. We wished you’d touch him even once. Your fingertips tracing his jawline the same way they’d trace the edge of your phone. Poke his checks the same way you’d pressed the buttons. Decorate and dress him the same way you’d change your phone case and phone charm. Oh how he wished he could be around you as often as your phone was.
Hell, even throw him across the room the same way you do to it. Throw him on the bed like you do to your phone after a long day. Then check that it wasn’t cracked afterwards from the impact. Turn to him anytime you have a question like you would to your phone. Was it possible to be jealous of an inanimate object?
"Are you snooping through my phone?”
You playfully glared at Reo with an irritated smile
“No no no- See? I haven’t even bothered trying to unlock it!”
He showed you your phone, still on the black screen having not been turned on
“I just wanted to see your lock screen- I swear-”
Reo laughed, a tone of panic and desperation in his voice. Please believe him. He doesn’t know what he’d do if you didn’t trust him…
You looked at him skeptically, but let him off with a shrug.
“Do you have a hair dryer or anything?” “Oh yea! Let me help you”
Fuck, you looked amazing. the way you looked in his clothing, your hair dripping wet, leaving stains on his shirt. God he loved you
Reo reached under the bed and pulled it out, unwrapping the cord and plugging it in. He smiled and signaled for you to sit on the bed in front of you
He hummed contently, running his fingers through your hair as he held the hairdryer.
"Your hair is beautiful. Would you ever consider doing a shampoo ad or something? You’d look amazing on the cover of a magazine”
Ah, this caught you off guard- but you thanked him as you smiled to yourself at the complement
“Think this is the best I can do… Is it okay?”
He turned the hair dryer off, and ruffled your hair lightly
You nodding, running your hands through your hair. Most of it was dry, but the tips were still a bit wet, though that wasn’t a problem.
“You said you have extra rooms?” “Oh… Yea, I guess so…”
Why don’t you stay in my room? What’s wrong with staying with me? I cleaned everything just for you, everything's hidden- THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH MY ROOM. STAY HERE. PLEASE.
“but they’re all supper small- I don’t think you’ll like them” “That’s alright, anything will work for the night” “Well- my bed’s bigger than all the other ones…" “Didn’t you say there were multiple guest rooms…?” “...But- I really don’t mind you staying in my bed…”
Shit. What was he going to say to get you to stay? He should’ve never said there were other rooms. What if he told you the other rooms had rat infestations- no, you’d be disgusted by him….
Bam!
The loudest strike of thunder sounded. It was so loud it was almost unnatural…
“You know what- nevermind. I think I’ll stay with you tonight…”
You laughed awkwardly, body shaking a bit from the sudden bang. You hated thunder.
Reo smiled he’d be sure to give the assistants a raise after tonight
He set everything up. Gave you a cute plushie and brought over extra blankets in case you got cold, a cup of water, and charged your phone. Whatever you wanted, really.
“You gonna come to bed yet? It’s almost 11….”
You yawned, rubbing your eyes half asleep
Reo wished he could see this sight every night. He swore in that moment on his heart that he’d marry you
“Yup, just turning off the lights.”
He flicked a few switches and the room blacked out. A few moments after Reo joined you under the blankets
“Goodnight, Reo.” “Goodnigh, my love” “Mh?” “I said Goodnight, [Y/N].”
BONUS He may or may not have set a quiet alarm (to no wake you) so he could stare at your face for a few hours... and to preorder breakfast!

Quinn Hughes x fem!reader
Summary: Quinn makes it up to his girlfriend after a date gone wrong. Quinn Hughes x reader
Warnings: NSFW 18+, smut, mdni
Notes: This is my first time posting smut. Please be kind. Also, I hate proofreading so much
Y/n’s boots sloshed with rain as she stepped through the front door, frowning at the mat that did very little to stop the muck from getting on their clean floors. She took them off, cringing when she stepped on the wet ends of her jeans that were just too big for her. Anything for fashion.
She pulled her pants higher up her waist and tugged her wet socks off. Quinn kissed her forehead apologetically when she sat on the bench in their entrance way.
“I don’t wanna spend the rest of our date night cleaning the floors.” He whined, sitting down next to her. He wrapped an arm around her shoulder, uncaring how her wet hair stuck to his neck.
“It’s not too bad,” she said. As long as their shoes stayed where they were at the door, the rest of the floors wouldn’t get as dirty. “Hasn’t been much of a date night anyway.”
Quinn frowned. “I’m so sorry, baby.”
He truly had nothing to be sorry for. It wasn’t his fault that the date night had gone so terribly so fast. They’d both known about the little check-up doctors appointment he had booked for that afternoon, they just hadn’t known about the bad accident that had happened on the highway and the traffic it had caused- paired with Vancouvers usual crazy traffic.
They hadn’t known that you had to be less than 5 minutes late to keep your reservation at this fancy, stuck-up restaurant. Quinn didn’t take a liking to the man at the front, who looked at Y/n for a little too long in all the wrong places. They got kicked out quickly.
They didn’t know it was going to rain, not bothering to check the weather beforehand as they had assumed they would be under the roof of an expensive restaurant, instead of walking around the whole night.
Quinn knew how long his girlfriend had taken to get ready, getting dolled up and styling her hair in bouncy curls, only for them to go flat when they got wet. He panicked when he saw the dark mascara smudging her cheeks, and only slightly relaxed when she assured him it was just the rain.
They didn’t know they’d have to get home so early, so they had let one of Quinn’s teammates borrow his car for the night with the promise that he’d drive them home afterwards. That had all fallen out of place, and they made do with an Uber that took forever to find them.
She shook her head at him with a reassuring smile. “Not your fault. I’m just glad we had a night together at all. Busy times lately.”
Her drying hair had begun to frizz up, and Quinn tried to smooth it with his hand. He had no luck with that and tucked it behind her ear instead. “I know…” he muttered, giving her painted lips a quick kiss.
She stood to remove her jacket and Quinn followed to help her. He hung it up when it was off and pulled her close to him, his palm splayed on her lower back as she fiddled with the chain around his neck.
"You’re so pretty," he said, his index finger under her chin, tilting her head to look up at him. Three simple words, which she heard from him every day, and she still felt weak in her knees. She fell into him, burying her pink face into his white t-shirt. She put no effort into keeping herself upright- he was there to catch her if she fell, he was there to hold her.
"Don't hide, baby." His words were muffled against the top of her head, getting lost in her hair. He pressed a kiss there and sighed when the scent of her lavender shampoo hit his nose. "Look at me."
Y/n tilted her head, following his order, but her cheek stayed smushed against his chest, and Quinn gave her a smile. God, she loved that smile. She wished he showed it to the world a little more often. He brought one hand to her neck, petting the soft skin under her jaw, and his other palm splayed against her back under her shirt. She giggled when the thin fabric tickled her spine.
"Come sit with me," he said, already making his way to the couch. He kept her pressed against him as he walked, giving her no chance to decline- not that she'd ever want to. The walk was short, and though she couldn't see from where she pressed against his chest, she knew they had made it when she felt him move his hands to the back of her thighs, picking her up and falling backward onto the cushion. She straddled his thighs and lifted her head to press light kisses along his neck, starting at the collar of his shirt and ending just below his ear. Quinn leaned back with a shaky sigh, giving her hip a squeeze when she shifted on his lap.
She felt shuffling from underneath her, but only stopped nibbling his ear when she heard the tv turn on behind her. She pulled away from him and pushed his arm back down from where it hung beside her, turning the volume higher. "Am I boring you, or?" she asked with furrowed brows.
"No baby," he assured, his hand running up and down her waist. His lips quirked, "Just makin' sure the neighbors don't hear what I'm hoping you're planning on doin' with me here."
She snorted but didn't say anything back, squeezing both of his cheeks and pressing a smiley kiss to his puckered lips. His right hand traveled under her shirt again, and his fingers tickled her spine as he tried to unclasp her bra. She pulled away again when she felt his lips stop moving against hers. She giggled at the concentration laced in his features, his eyes still closed. "Need some help back there?"
"No," he declined quickly. "I've got it." He huffed when he pulled on the clasp for what he estimated was the 6th time, cursing when it, again, didnt give. Y/n wouldve felt bad at the defeated expression on his face before he moved to look at it behind her if she didnt find it so endearing. "The hell?"
Y/n laughed. "It's new."
Quinn let out a breath when he finally got it undone and Y/n laughed harder. "Just fuckin' kiss me." he huffed, leaning back again and pulling her in to crash his lips against hers. He slipped his fingers under the hem of her shirt and pulled it over her head, taking that goddamn bra with it and throwing it away as far as he could. Y/n gasped at the sound of a crash behind her, and whipped her head around to see an old vase shattered on the wood floors, her shirt and bra bundled on top. "The fuck is wrong with me?" he groaned, squeezing his eyes shut in frustration.
She chuckled and pressed a sweet kiss to his cheek. "Aw, sweetheart. I think it's cute how clumsy I make you." She pressed another kiss to his cheek when he threw his head back with an embarrassed whine. Then another. Then another. "We'll clean it later. We’re a bit preoccupied at the moment."
She kissed his lips this time, smiling when he regained enough confidence to bring his hand back up to smooth over her ribs, the tips of his thumbs brushing against her breasts. She whined when he swiped his tongue against her bottom lip, his strong hand gently cupping her breast. She felt a wave of adoration for the man, her heart swelling at how tender he always was with her. "I love you."
His other hand swiped some stray hair away from her eyes, breathing hot air onto her lips, "I love you so much baby,” he suddenly flipped her, so she was the one sitting on the soft cushion and knelt in front of her. “Lemme show you just how much.”
Both of his arms wrapped around her waist as he pulled her to the edge of the seat. He held her in a hug for a moment before pressing wet kisses to the insides of her breasts. She ran her fingers through his hair and he looked up at her through his long lashes, and she swore she had never seen a more beautiful thing.
A thumb brushed against her nipple and she breathed when it peaked. He trailed more kisses down her middle in a straight line and hooked his fingers into the waistband of her jeans. She lifted her hips for him to pull them off and squeezed her thighs when she was fully bare. He grabbed one of her knees in each hand and stroked the tops with his thumbs, urging them open.
“Quinny-” she cut herself off with a gasp when he nipped the inside of her thigh. He soothed the skin with his tongue. “Quinny, this isn’t fair.”
He looked up at her with raised brows. “What’s not fair?”
“This.” She said, and suddenly she was fisting the fabric of his t-shirt right at his collar, and he grinned. “This needs to go.”
“Anything you want, baby.” He stayed knelt in between her legs on the ground in front of her as he tugged his shirt above his head. His grin grew wider when he felt her lean forward and urge the fabric off faster. Y/n rolled her eyes fondly when he placed the shirt neatly on the coffee table behind him, making sure no more vases were harmed.
She flattened her palms on his toned chest and strong shoulders for a brief moment before he dove back into her thighs, and despite wanted to pet and stroke him a little longer, she didn’t put up much of a fight. Not that she could when his kisses were growing more heated and trailing closer and closer to her core. She squeezed his head with her thighs when he poked at her clit with his tongue, but he made no move to stop her.
Her ankles crossed behind his head, and he stroked her pussy with his index underneath her. He groaned at the slick. He brought his other hand up to grope at her breasts. “You enjoying yourself?”
“Does it feel like it?” She managed to breath out, only failing at keeping her voice steady.
“Yes.”
“That’s ‘cause I am.” She moaned, tugging harshly on his hair, then smoothing it out because she thought she might have pulled too hard. That didn’t seem to be the case, however, when he sucked on her clit and slipped a finger inside her with a groan, the sound sending shivers through her entire body.
She pushed her hips further into his face, surprising herself with how that was even possible, and moaned again when he flexed his knuckle inside her.
His knees started to ache, ground hard against the wooden floor, fingers deep in her cunt for what he was sure were the most enjoyable few minutes of his life. It took everything in him to stop just before she came, wanting to see her come undone on his fingers, but wanting to see her come undone on his cock even more. He cooed at her when she whined, picking himself up to press a loving, wet kiss on her temple. He held her hands for a moment before bringing them to his waistband, knowing that giving her the honours of undressing him would cheer her up.
It did, and she pulled his pants down eagerly. She subconsciously bit her bottom lip when she saw his shaft stand proud against his pelvis, and Quinn grabbed her chin and forced her to look up at him. “Do I tell you enough how fucking sexy you are? ‘Cause I’ll happily do it more.”
His fingers slid across her jaw as she replied with a cheeky grin, “You say it plenty, but it wouldn’t hurt to hear even more.”
He kissed her, hard. She moaned when his tongue flicked against her own- her lips were sure to still be swollen from this kiss tomorrow morning. He shuddered when she gripped him, rubbing the slick from his tip all over with her thumb. He cursed and grabbed the underside of her knee, throwing it up so her ankle rested on his shoulder. He put his hand on her own and helped her guide his cock into her, slowly and gently pushing further as she adjusted.
“Shit, I don’t think I’ll ever get used to that.” She admitted when he finally bottomed out.
He leaned close to her, their foreheads almost touching when he softly caressed her cheek with his thumb. “You okay, baby?”
“Perfectly!” She nodded quickly. “You’re just so big.”
“Fuck, honey,” he breathed, letting his head fall into the crook of her neck. “You can’t say shit like that. Gonna make me cum already.”
She giggled. “Sorry.”
He pressed kisses to her shoulder, his thrusts slow and purposeful. She stroked the hair at the nape of his neck, pretty moans leaving her lips. She let her other hand wander over his strong shoulders, and she giggled when he nuzzled into her neck in response, the hair of his beard tickling her skin.
“God, Quinn, don’t you ever shave again.” She said, somewhere in between pleading and demanding.
“What? You into mountain men?” He teased, and a sudden dark red flushed her cheeks knowing he could be so deep inside her and still make her laugh.
“That’s what trims are for.”
He lifted his head up to kiss her, straightening his spine and moving faster. Small whimpers turned to loud, guttural moans when she reached down to toy with her own clit for a moment.
He brought her right leg up to mirror her left on his shoulder, gripping her thighs as he pounded her. His eyes roamed her body underneath him and had to close his eyes for a moment to stop from cumming at the sight of her breasts bouncing in time with his thrusts. It did little to help him, the scene replaying in his mind over and over again, and he became sloppy with his movements. Desperate not to finish before her and ruin their not-so-perfect night for good, he replaced her fingers with his own, rubbing harsh shapes on her clit again. His head dipped as far as it could without completely folding her in half to suck bruises into her collarbone.
She threw her head back with a cry, and warned him of what was to come.
“Let go baby, c’mon, cum all over my cock,” he urged, and groaned when he felt her tight squeeze. “Shit,” he stuttered out. It only took a few more thrusts after her to finish, and he stayed slumped on top of her even when he finally stilled.
She brought her shaky legs down from his shoulders and wrapped them around his waist, letting him fall into her further. She twirled her fingers through his dark hair, lightly scratching his scalp as their breathing returned to normal. She sighed, “Date night worked out after all.”

you softly knocked on your boyfriend's door, awaiting his smile the moment you two lock eyes. your rain coat was being hit gently by the water that was falling off of mike's roof. his window showed that a tv was on and you knew it was probably his little sister, abby. you heard footsteps approaching the door and you pushed some loose hairs behind your ear.
the door slowly opened and abby's head popped into vision, she had the door slightly ajar and took a good look at you. "just trying to make sure its not a stranger." she said softly. she opened the door and smiled at you, and went back to her tv show. you walked in and shut the door behind you, forgetting to lock it. you unbuttoned your coat and hung it up on a hanger. "a visitor?" a voice called and you looked up into the hallway.
mike was standing with a big smile and he raised out his arms, inviting you for a hug. of course, you couldnt resist. you ran up to him and threw your arms around his neck and he got a nice grip on your waist. you two shared many kisses and took deep breaths. "i missed you so much." mike smiled and tilted up your head. you two made eye contact and both shared the comfortable feeling of love. "i missed you just as much." you replied, glancing over at his room.
he caught that you were looking away and followed your eyes. he took one hand off of your waist and led you to his room with the other. you couldnt help but giggle a bit, did you really make it that obvious? he shut the door behind the both of you and you sat on the bed. "so, abby is doing her thing. and we both know she'll be busy for awhile." mike walked up to you and looked down. your fingers ran up his shirt and you began to stroke the buttons on it. "we have all the time in the world." he whispered and softly grabbed your wrist, "but do you have to tease me?"
you nodded your head and smiled at him. finally, you put your finger under the button and pushed it off. his chest began to become more visible, but not all of it. you looked down and noticed the buldge in his pants, "i think id like to be in control tonight." you looked back up at him and placed both of your hands on the bed. he decided to finish unbuttoning his shirt but you moved his hands out of the way. "wrong. unbuckle your pants." he flushed red and nodded his head. he reached his hands down and followed your instructions, but in a hurry.
"youre needy arent you?" you grinned and watched his pants drop to the floor. one more layer of clothing left to go. "i'll do anything for you, please can i take my boxers off?" he asked politely, but that wouldnt cut it for you. you patted the empty space next to you and he instantly sat himself down. he kept looking down at his boner and back at you. "im in control." you got on top of him and held his face up. you pushed him down and he lied back, knowing that if he didnt stay down he'd get teased even more.
you grabbed his hands and slowly led them to your waist, but then you slid them down so that they were on your ass. you smirked as you felt his cock twitch and in response you grinded against it for a quick second. he let out some quiet whimpers hoping for more than just that. "whyd you..stop?" mike said, hesitant to question you, so he rubbed your ass a little bit thinking that youd forgive his questioning. "why should i give you anymore than that, hm?" you softly asked. he looked up into your eyes and slowly opened his mouth, "no reason, ma'am."
you ran your fingers through his hair and began to kiss him. you also started grinding on him again. the moment he felt you doing that, he let out a mhmmm that was muffled through a kiss. you continued pleasing your needy and horny boyfriend until a knock was heard. "mike!" abby called and you instantly got off of him and threw the blanket over the both of you. "uhh.. come in!" mike yelled, and she opened the door to see the two of you cuddling. "yuck.. i just wanted to tell you im going to bed.." she shut the door and walked away.
"guess all youre getting is a teasing session.." you smiled and kissed his cheek. he whined a little then laughed. "too bad for me."

For @firefly-party mine beloved wifi, who asked for steddie, and rain against a window.
There is much to be said about living in a trailer, but Eddie always loved laying in his bed and listen to the rain as it was beating against the roof with fierce determination.
Might be a bit cliché, but look, it's cliché for a reason. right?
Knowing that it's shitty and cold outside, knowing you are comfortable and warm inside, preferably wrapped up in as many blankets as you own, there is just something universal about that.
It's different after the upside down. It doesn't feel as safe, because some nights during a thunderstorm, he is not sure what is beating the roof, not sure what is reaching for him.
It's also different, because instead of the trailer, he is in a shitty apartment now. Walls stained with time and smoke and cheap landlord's poor taste in wallpaper, windows permanently sealed shut for the same reasons.
And because he is not alone.
Maybe that is the biggest part, actually. The best part, too.
The bed is probably a little too narrow for two people, but they make do by tangling themselves so close together it's hard to say where Eddie begins and where Stevie ends.
The duvet is bunched down by their waists, Steve's leg hooked around Eddie's calf, Eddie's arm across Steve's back, Steve's breath against Eddie's collarbones.
Eddie was never particularly hairy himself, despite his huge mop of hair, and that just allows him to feel the smattering of chest hair pressed against him, and the trail leading from Steve's belly button down his boxers.
The air is stale with sleep and sweat,  the morning grey through their too short curtains.
Eddie is enjoying the sensation between sleep and wakefulness, where you are aware enough to feel, but asleep enough to drift.
The fog clears only when Steve stirs, shifting closer and nuzzling into the crook of Eddie's neck.
The rain outside has yet to give up its fierceness, true to the season, but without the roof of the trailer, without the thin layer of metal making out the husk of his previous home, it feels different.
Instead of hiding underneath a leaf, he feels like he finally found a burrow, a home.
Not a very good one, objectively, but his nonetheless. His and Steve's.
Jesus, Eddie finds it hard to believe sometimes.
Steve shifts again and makes a sound, something that sounds like half a snore, half a word, and Eddie finds himself smiling. That famous hair is a right mess, sticking up in every direction, exposing Steve's forehead.
Rain makes him soft, Eddie thinks, as he leans down the few inches it takes to press his lips to that perfectly kissable forehead.
On the floor above them, Eddie can make out the sounds of their neighbors waking up, but he isn't ready for that yet.
It's warm, cozy, safe.
Steve gives a content sigh and his arm tightens around Eddie, before it travels up, his hand reaching Eddie's neck, under his hair,  his thumb just touching the shell of Eddie's ear.
"We should probably get up," Steve mutters, eyes still closed, lips pouty in the way they are when his cheek is pressed against the pillow.
"Probably," Eddie agrees, lips still against Steve's forehead. Pulling away is impossible, this moment feels like it is plucked out of time, a bubble of their own. "But when was I ever known to make good choices?"
"Hmmmmm," Steve supplies, and Eddie takes that as Steve disagrees, that Eddie is full of infinite wisdom. Good man.
Along Steve's back, Eddie can track moles, like a star chart written in Braille, just for him to read.
Maybe Steve will let him draw them out again, the sharpie only stayed visible for a few days.
"Did you buy eggs?" Steve says, keeping his eyes stubbornly closed as he plays with Eddie's ear, making him shudder.
"Yeah. And ice cream. Today is an ice-cream-for-breakfast-day." Eddie declares, leaning backwards to pull Steve half on top of him.
That's it, he realizes. That is what he was missing. The weight, the security of another person, the proof of being loved and trusted in ways he only imagined back in that trailer, with the world closed off, still only a thin metal wall away.
"Nancy will have my head if I'm late," Steve grumbles, but moves to fill the spaces where Eddie is not, covering him as much as he can.
"Can't be late if you don't go in," Eddie says with his infinite wisdom, cradling Steve closer, closer, close is never close enough.
"Can't fault that logic," Steve huffs. "I really don't want to get up."
"So stay," Eddie whispers.
He doesn't realize how much he needed to hear it, how much he needs Steve, until he says it.
"Always," Steve promises, promises always, always, always, whenever Eddie asks.
The rain doesn't let up until lunchtime. Steve is only let go to empty his bladder, and Steve stays, stays, always stays.
Rainy days are the best.

Prompt Day 21: Haunted or abandoned place
Pairing: Cody/Rex
Tags & Warnings: suggestive, bad jokes, fluff, nudity
Note: My thoughts were too big for my word count. I wanted the abandoned place/one bed/hot sex trope, but there wasn't enough room for the porn so I improvised.
Read on AO3
Tumblr media
The cold rain beat down hard on the ground around them as they trudged through the thick forest. Rex could hear the splatter of heavy rain drops against his duraplast armor, and it began to grate on his nerves. They were still way off target, and with the light of day far behind them and the storm getting worse, they'd struggle to make that night.
"We need to make camp," Rex said through his helmet's intercom.
"Where?" Cody asked. "Everything's been washed away, and anything that hasn't will."
Rex sighed. He was right. Where they were, coupled with the inclement weather, wasn't suitable for anything other than mud guppies, mosquitoes, and giant snakes that wouldn't think twice about dragging them into the forest and eating them. They needed shelter, and they needed it quickly.
"Do you see anything on your radar that looks promising?" Rex asked. Cody always had the best telemetry, which meant he was more likely to find decent shelter than him.
Cody was silent as he looked at the mapping system in his HUD. "There's something two klicks west of here... Looks like a structure."
"Great," Rex said. "Let's go." He turned on his heels to head west, but as he stepped, his foot slipped on a wet leaf, and he fell face down into the mud. Groaning, he lifted his head up and wiped at the front of his helmet to clear it off. It didn't help much. Cody stretched out a hand to help him up, and they set off towards the coordinates.
Relief washed over them when they finally arrived. It wasn't a large structure and looked abandoned, but it had a roof and four walls, and at that point, that's all they cared about. They had a slight moment of hesitancy about just barging in, but at the next loud crack of thunder, they both rushed inside.
The perimeter search was simple enough. The inside was just as unassuming as the outside, and based on the info from their HUDs, there were no life forms or droids inside the building. They were alone. Good.
There was, however, an old bed, which meant they didn't have to sleep on the floor. It was a nice bonus in their line of work. The only thing that could've made it better was a shower with running water, and lo and behold, there was one, but it was cold water.
"Do you want to go first?" Cody asked while he worked at removing his armor.
Rex pulled a twig out of his shin plate. "I'm already cold. I don't need to be colder."
"The water would feel good," Cody countered. He pulled his soaked blacks over his head and wrung some of the water out.
"Hot water would feel good," Rex corrected, shivering as he pulled his top blacks off.
Cody slipped his lower blacks off and wrung them out, leaving him naked. He grabbed his flashlight and scanned around the room. "Look," he said, and Rex turned around. "There's a fireplace. You can get warm after you have your cold shower."
Rex sighed and pulled his blacks off his last leg, tossing them onto the ground. "Fine. I'll go first, but there better be a fire going when I'm done."
Cody smirked. "Yes, sir."
After his stone-cold shower, Rex returned to the main room, where he was greeted by an amber glow and Cody wrapped in one of the blankets from the bed. He tossed the blanket onto Rex, then headed off to take his own cold shower. When he returned, Rex was sitting in front of the fire with the blanket wrapped around him. He'd also found a way to hang their blacks up to dry over the fire.
"May I join you?" Cody asked as water dripped down his legs and onto the floor.
Rex looked up and opened one end of the blanket as an invitation. "If you must."
Cody sat down and huddled close to Rex, then pulled the edge of the blanket around himself and back to the front to close it up. Rex leaned his head against Cody's shoulder, and Cody rested his head on top of Rex's.
"Does cuddling under a blanket while naked make us gay?" Rex asked, barely keeping his eyes open as the exhaustion finally took hold.
Cody snorted. "I thought we already were. Or does sex not count anymore?"
"Nah," Rex said. "Sex is physical release. Cuddling is gay."
Cody chuckled. "We could have sex if you want to feel less gay."
"I'm too tired for that," Rex mumbled. He closed his eyes and breathed deeply. "Maybe we can be gay for just one night."

Heroes Die Episodic Drafted #2
Project title - The White Panther Heist (cross reference of The Pink Panther & Why No White Panther?)

=minutes until midnight, cold, about to rain. Jewelry store dead but the two dudes decked out in plastic green army wear and one guy looking like a dollar store's he-man. one of them is chucking a cinder block on the display case, barely lacerating the glass after a few hefty drops=
🪖1 - *huffing lift dropping a brick* no i swear all it takes-hah-is a lil-grrrahhh! *SLAM!* eblow grease man, help me out!
🪖2 - I've got a better idea man. *Hops over the display counter* Let's just swipe 'em here.
🪖1 - no way man, hey I actually bought this *points to brick* for this gig. Seventeen-bucks and for what? Can't even break the glass!
🗡️ - and what do you expect it to shatter like a wine glass? Wait don't tell me you brought only a single cinder block to a smash-grab, Micheal
🪖2 - yeah like these are any better *points to m-16 looking rifle that is coated with green shiny plastic, fully functional rubber gun*
=staff door can be heard opened as it knocks back Toy Boy 🪖2 out as an old man comes through with a bat
👴🏽 - you damn punks want now?!? Get outta here before i call the cops!
🪖1 - We wouldn't want the cops here would we? *Throws brick at the store owner*
👴🏽 - Whe- *trips over avoiding the blunt force as it hits the wall behind him but impacts on the floor on the side* Jesus Christ! Who throws a brick at a 77 year old man here?!?
🗡️ - yeah Michael real smooth here, you really want to make that $17 wort over someone?!?
🪖1 - he had a bat like I just-reflexes man I'm sorry.
🗡️ - dude you really think he's going to make a home run on a f◾◾◾ing cinder block?!? Or what do you think that will also shatter too?!?
🪖2 - can we just make up now? Pretty sure the only worker in the whole damn store is on Life alert mode.
👴🏽 - punks you want? Money? I got em in the back, you hurt me bad tho-
🗡️ - yeah *smacks lips* no. *Pulls out replica sword aims directly to the neck of the store owner*
👴🏽 - please ... No no no. I just can't get up!
🗡️ - we're only here for one thing and it is not your dollar. We are here for your diamonds. *Stuffed hand into a money bag filled with the spoils that toy boy 🪖2 was swiping behind the counters* pure as crystal clear di-the hell? These are just gold rings dude.
🪖2 - there's diamonds on those rings
🗡️ - are you color blind? The stuff is sapphire. Or like a lapis?
🪖2 - does it really matter? It's still good jewels all the same.
🗡️ - you know by that logic we should just s◾◾t in the bag. Whatever. This thing? *Tosses card reader into the bag* like you said it's all the same.
👴🏽 - if it's diamonds that you want, I do have them in my supply replacement boxes. You find them in the back room, most West corner. Find a grey deposit box, labeled D. I. You'll find the diamonds there. That's all I have if that's all you want please.... I don't know where my keys are just bust the lock or whatever.
🪖1 - hey so I apologize for this or like... I mean we're taking your s◾◾t
👴🏽 - just get! Get!
= the three goons waltz into the staff back room as the old store owner lays there. One. Two. Three. Four. One. The man tries to get up but the old bones did get hurt in the scuffle. The man tries to find his footing as he eyes over the alarm switch. Just a simple few steps away if the impact felt like it broke a knee.
== zooming out. Out focus through the glass door of the gold 4 cash shop established on an empty lot surrounded by lowering concrete & steel buildings. On top of one across the road lies the top of an office building, spiffy with a slanted roof top to hang out in.

Arrvatarr! The Last Arrbender!
Chapter 3, part... the rest/3
A Zutara pirate AU - comedy/romance/action
Here's part 1/3 on Tumblr or Read the whole thing (chapters 1-3) on AO3
This story is rated M for Mature (Ole Salts only, yarrr)
Detective GoodBrother Sokka, anyone? ^.-
((this one might be boring? idk, things got plotty on me and i've been framing a roof, which has involved climbing around on the inside of gables about 14' off the floor and lots of trips up and down the wobbliest 12' ladder carrying heavy rafters in 90 degree weather and. dudes. i'm tired and all my clinging muscles are like wtf is wrong with you we never do this? so here's a finished chapter to celebrate the framing being done and the roofers coming to finish decking and surfacing yayyy))
.
.
The sun rested low and soft in the east, peeking through scattered clouds and Katara was just finishing off her porridge when Sokka came sidling up on deck. He spotted her where she was sitting on the port gunwale and made his way over, stretching his arms above his head in the super-casual move that clearly meant he was here for a classic brotherly chat.
Katara heaved a sigh. He must have really gobbled his food to follow her so quickly.
“Ahh, nothing like dish duty with Toph to really top off an action-packed night of pirating!”
“You cannot be done already.”
“Right, yeah, no, I just mean I’m looking forward to dish duty with Toph. You know, because her playful and fun-loving attitude makes the chore go so much quicker.”
That could be true. Or it could mean Toph had tried to metalbend the tin dishes again and they were all dinged and bent - and still dirty. Katara sighed a second time and rolled her eyes. Sokka hoisted himself up to sit on the rail beside her and laced his fingers together on his crossed legs.
“So! How are things?”
“Great. I’m the only pirate in the world who has to rewash the dishes for the other pirates. How could I not feel extra special, Sokka?”
“You don’t have to rewash them. We haven’t even first-washed them yet. I’m kind of just here for your bowl, but I was trying to be cool about it.”
Katara frowned at his demure expression and held out her bowl. He accepted it graciously - and then did not go away.
“You seem tense, little sister.”
He said it with gravity and quiet care that made Katara’s frown fade. It also made her aware of how the pucker in her brow had started to ache.
“Usually after a good plundering, you’re as cheerful as the rest of us. But today it’s like you’ve got a rain cloud on your shoulder. Toph seems to be getting to you more than usual. What gives?”
Katara let out a little huff. “Are you really pretending that you didn’t just gang up on me with the rest of them down there?”
“We might have taken the teasing a little far,” Sokka admitted with a half-repentant shrug. “It’s just… it was kind of a surprise to see you take your intimidation game so hard in that direction. I mean, I’ve seen you tease a guy before but… damn, Katara.”
She blushed and turned her head up to examine a very interesting cloud. She had forgotten her brother was watching that play out… “It got out of hand.”
Sokka was quiet for a long moment, then sighed and, sounding like he really didn’t want to, asked, “Was it, though? Because in the moment, you really seemed to be having a good time.”
Katara snapped a glare on him. “Not you too.”
“What?”
“You are not going to pressure me to-! To-!”
“Pressure? Who’s pressuring you?” Sokka’s alarm suddenly became outrage. “Was it those soldiers? Toph mentioned the crew-”
“It’s Toph! She’s out of control! The guy is a Fire Prince - obviously an evil oppressor of all our peoples - and she wants me to jolly his roger like the most-”
“Horrible turn of phrase.”
“-important thing is me getting off!” Katara scoffed and threw one arm up in the air, still disbelieving. “It’s so much more complicated than that. He’s not just some guy. He’s everything that’s wrong with the world, but in a person!”
“Well, not everything…”
Katara turned wide, disbelieving eyes on him. Sokka just shrugged extra-deep.
“Don’t get me wrong, the guy fights like a war machine. But I’ve seen enough firebenders to know he wasn’t exactly going for kill shots.”
“He burned Toph!”
“She was touching her shield and it got hot. Besides, who wouldn’t take a swing at Toph? She’s a powerful bender and powerfully annoying. Risk of the trade. If she’s pressuring you to go after him, she clearly isn’t holding a grudge.” He squinted and raised an eyebrow as if thinking about it, then shook his head and went on. “I’ll talk to her about that. Or get Suki to do it. Kid needs guidance. Anyway, something about this whole situation feels off to me.”
“What do you mean?”
“Come on. The Fire Lord only has a few kids, right? What’s one of them doing so far from home on that crappy little ship with about half the soldiers it’d take to fully crew it, much less defend it?” Sokka stroked his chin as he talked. Katara half expected him to whip out the detective hat and pipe. “That wasn’t a fighting force. Prince Zuko wasn’t out here leading any excursions to put down resistance factions.”
“What resistance?” Katara muttered sourly. “The last resistance in the South Seas disappeared with Dad.”
Sokka peered at her, and she could see the burning heart-deep sting, the horrible grieving aloneness in her chest reflected in his eyes. “For a long time, that was true,” he said carefully. “But now there’s us.”
“We’re one ship. A handful of kids.”
“And we’ve sunk how many steamers in the last year?”
Unbidden, Katara’s eyes slid sideways to the railing on the stairs up to the poop deck. It was scored deeply, one for every steamer sent down. The freshest notch was a quarter of the way up, with many older ones marching behind it.
“And now,” Sokka said quietly, “we have and are training the Avatar.”
“Nobody knows about that. Aang has been really good about keeping quiet.”
“Aang is a goofball kid with too much energy and not enough sense to protect himself. He’s not ready to go public and yet here he is trying to yuck it up and get philosophical with the first firebenders he meets since coming out of the ice. I mean,” he half-laughed, half-scoffed, “did you hear that arr-bender joke? Terrible!”
“I know…” Katara rubbed her arms as if to chase off a sudden chill. “I tried to tell him to stay away from them before dinner but he keeps talking about his friend from the Fire Nation. I think it’s hard for him to really internalize that it’s been a century and everything is different now.”
“Well he needs to get with the program quick.”
Sokka’s tone was all seriousness now and he turned his head to meet her eyes, concern knotting his brow.
“The ship’s log indicated their heading was for the South Pole. There weren’t any specific coordinates cited - just a note that the commanding officer intended to continue his search there. Katara, Prince Zuko was on his way to look for our village.”
Katara’s heart pounded for more than one reason. “Do you think he came here for us?”
There had been a few Fire Navy ships in recent months sent to capture them. Ambushing and sinking those ships was easy enough. It was much scarier to think that the Fire Lord might have sent his own son to target them…
…but the thought that this particular muscle-bound prince had come here to get her had a whole swarm of flutters battling it out in her belly. That Prince Zuko might have tracked them and laid a trap with himself as the bait, and now he was locked in the brig - perhaps as a part of his own plan… It gave Katara a wild tingle thinking about what might happen. What he might try to do.
She would stop him, of course, but… whatever he did, it’d be exciting to watch him try.
But Sokka just shrugged, wide-eyed. “I don’t know what he was after. With a fighting force that small, he’d be lucky to subdue a crew of normal pirates. And if he was hunting us specifically, he’d have had some reports about Toph and probably would have prepared his men to counter her somehow. I don’t think he came here planning on a direct fight. Maybe he meant to take the village hostage while we were gone and force us to surrender that way.”
“You think he wanted to take Gran-gran hostage?” Katara fumed, horrified and furious at the mere notion.
“I’m just not sure what else he could have had planned.” Sokka shook his head and scratched the back of his neck, leaning back on one arm. “And yet… I’m speculating on all that. Whoever wrote the ship’s log was wordy and did not follow standard reporting procedures so it might take some serious digging to figure out what Prince Zuko was really searching for. There’s a chance it wasn’t us at all. I mean, he seemed pretty surprised when we took his ship. And he adapted quick to Toph’s metalbending, but he made a big deal about her being blind. If he’d heard of us at all, he hid it well. Which is kind of weird all on its own…”
“Sokka, just because we’re the scourge of the South Seas doesn’t mean everyone’s heard of us.”
“No, but you’d think a prince sailing into dangerous waters would have at least gotten some kind of warning. They stopped at a Fire Nation shipyard near Whale Tail Island to refuel last week. Why wouldn’t the commander at that outpost tell him he was heading into our territory?”
“They probably did and he figured he could handle it because he’s an arrogant, entitled asshole.”
“Or maybe they were hoping he’d get captured because he’s such a charmer.”
Katara smirked, but it quickly faded. “His crew seemed to like him. If the commander tried to sabotage him, it might have been some kind of political thing. Jealousy or something.”
Sokka assessed her face for a long moment. “What did those guys say to you?”
“Ugh. Toph.” Katara rolled her eyes, then shrugged. “They overheard her loudmouth personal advice and started extolling his virtues like a pack of used boat salesmen.”
He scoffed, trying to hide a short laugh. Katara couldn’t help the grin spreading over her face.
“So I said - get this - ‘What is this? The FNS Wingman?’”
“Classic!” Sokka laughed, then slung an arm around her shoulders. “My little sister, making jokes and witty repartee. I’m so proud.”
Katara looped an arm around his back and leaned her head on his shoulder. The sun was beginning to grow warm in the east, cutting through the chilly night air. For a long moment they were silent, basking in some of the last sunshine they would see before autumn hardened the air and tucked the sun away for winter. At length, Sokka broke the quiet with a gentle, teasing tone.
“A whole ocean of guys and you let it ‘get out of hand’ with the Fire Nation prince who might be plotting to sabotage us. What is it about this guy?”
Katara didn’t really mean to answer, but she breathed it out anyway. “The way he looks at me when I’m winning.”
Sokka chuckled and squeezed her shoulders. “Well, you just keep on winning. And if you ever don’t win, don’t worry. Ole Sokka-” He grinned, bright as the rising sun. “-has a plan.”
.
.
The warrior, Suki, came with bowls of some manner of gruel shortly after dawn and, several hours later, Sokka appeared. He wore a simple blue tunic and a mild smile and he carried Zuko’s broadswords sheathed and tossed casually over his shoulder.
“Rise and shine, it’s sword-fighting time!” he chortled as he unlocked the door. “Ya like that? I came up with it just on the way down here.”
Zuko, who had been meditating (stewing) on his bunk and certainly not sleeping during the day like some kind of sluggard, practically leapt past where Iroh snored to get out the door.
“Finally. It’s hours past midday. I thought you weren’t coming at all.”
Sokka relocked the door and gave Zuko a once-over before starting for the stairs. “Aw, and you got all dressed up just for our fight? I’m touched.”
“It’s a training tunic,” Zuko snapped as he kept apace. “I don’t fight in my pajamas. Unless my ship is being attacked in the night.”
“But barefoot is normal.”
“…No.”
Sokka only kept walking, that easy smile irritatingly unchanging. “Forgot to grab your boots?”
Zuko glared at him and did not speak. He had to fall behind to follow Sokka up the narrow stairs to the next level of the ship.
“Oof, that’s gotta be tough. Forgot your boots and now they’re lost forever, sunk with your ship. Why, you might even get frostbite walking around with no shoes on-”
“I won’t get frostbite.”
“-but luckily ole Sokka has an eye for fine footwear.”
He shoved open a sticking door along a hallway of shut doors and Zuko followed him into an untidy cabin with a wide rumpled bed and shelves crammed with dusty objects. …And several items that Zuko immediately recognized as his. He surveyed the chaos with a scowl. Sokka paid him no mind as he threw open a trunk and fished around.
“It’d really be a shame to let quality leatherwork be lost at sea.”
He emerged with Zuko’s scuffed training boots and held them up like a specimen he was examining.
“Just look at this stitching! It’s so fine, you can’t even see the individual stitches. And you were just gonna leave these behind!”
In the trunk behind him, Zuko spied some of his other, less broken-in boots. “You took all my shoes? When did you do that?”
“Less questions, more deals,” Sokka said, dangling the boots just in Zuko’s grasp. “I’ll let you borrow these for our first round on the condition that they become your prize if you win instead of the swords.”
Zuko considered it for a moment, then tipped his chin up and met those clever blue eyes. “Alright. But I want an immediate second round for the swords.”
“I guess that’s not totally unreasonable.” Sokka smiled like a closing trap. “If I win that one, I want to know how you got that scar.”
Zuko thought about refusing, but what did it matter? He was going to win anyway. “Fine.”
He snatched the boots from Sokka’s grasp and shoved his feet into them, peering around at the packed shelves as he did.
“This is your room? What do you need with all this junk?”
“You never know what might turn out to be useful later,” Sokka said, picking up what looked like a lantern intended to float on a candle’s heat - though it was not quite like any paper lantern Zuko had ever seen. “Sometimes I look at this stuff and get ideas. Build stuff from other stuff. That kind of thing. Sometimes I just like knowing it’s here and not in the Fire Nation’s hands. All set?”
Zuko wanted to go back to the brig for some of his socks - which he had remembered - but he was impatient to get those swords back in his hands.
They made their way up to the deck where Suki and Toph waited, loitering around a little table and tossing bits of food - nuts or something - into the air for that strange little animal to swoop down and grab. Zuko had gotten only a glimpse of it last night. By daylight, though, the big ears and luminous eyes were much more recognizable.
“Is that a flying lemur?” He asked, stopping just past the door to watch it perch in the rigging and munch on whatever it had caught. “I’ve only ever seen those at the Air Temples.”
“Yeah, yeah, super rare animal companion,” Sokka huffed. “At his current pace, Momo’s gonna steal more food from us than we can steal from the Fire Nation. He’s a pirate among pirates.”
Zuko kept staring at the lemur. He had never been this close to one before. They had all been so skittish when he had spotted them during his search.
But then… he also remembered the desolation of the ruins, the ancient blast marks and lingering signs of devastation. The skeletal remains of air and fire people alike, bleaching just the same in the long years of weather but still telling a story of horror and murder and ruthlessness. Genocide.
Perhaps it was inevitable that a creature that lived in such a habitat carried some resonant awareness of the nature of the terrible deeds done there. The crimes and who had perpetrated them.
The lemur presently licking itself and making unsettling eye contact with Zuko, however, seemed to have left such reticence behind.
“Are you guys gonna wail on each other or just stand around sharing precious moments?” the warrior asked, making smirking eyes at Sokka.
“Yeah,” snickered the metalbender. “Would you two girls rather go back to swapping shoes and admiring cute animals?”
Zuko glowered at her, but Sokka was already talking.
“Suki, my love, I’m saving all my precious moments for you. Toph-” His tone dropped to prim annoyance. “-I don’t even know how to respond to such sexist generalizations, being as I am a confident man to whom girls and girly activities are totally fine and not demeaning in any way.”
“Haha, yeah, you almost believe that, Snoozles.”
“Do they have to be here?” Zuko demanded.
“Trust me,” Suki said with an unpleasant smile. “If Sokka gets hurt through no fault of yours, you’re gonna want as many witnesses as possible.”
“Uh, a little faith here? C’mon.”
“You should probably keep it down, too,” Toph added. “Sweetness is taking a little nap and she’ll probably turn you into a permanent prince-cicle if she finds out you’re cheating on her with her brother.”
“What?”
“Okay! Sword time!” Sokka suddenly swung the scabbard around and into Zuko’s chest - he caught it, but barely - and then strode across the deck, stretching out his shoulders. “Remember the rules. We stop at first blood, and no limb-chopping, throat-slashing or other lethal moves. No firebending,” he added with a smirk. “I think that covers it.”
“That’s not all the terms,” Zuko protested. “If I win, I keep my boots. If you win, I’ll tell you about the portrait. The second round is compulsory.”
“Right right right.”
Sokka wore an almost placid look on his face as he reached over his shoulder and drew the weapon waiting there. The blade was oddly dark, and the craftsmanship seemed especially fine - but it was difficult to tell from across the distance separating them.
Besides, Zuko had other things on his mind besides assessing more of Sokka’s stolen goods. He slowly drew the broadswords from their scabbard and tossed it aside. And then he began.
He separated the blades in the artful slashes of an opening sequence, then faced his opponent, whose standard beginning stance had sagged slightly. Sokka watched him with an incredulously curled lip.
“Aw shit,” piped the metalbender. “Better watch it, Sokka. Prince Pretty-hair came to play.”
“I came to win,” Zuko corrected. Then he attacked.

Y'know that genre of TOH fic where Hunter stumbles through the portal a few years pre-series and gets adopted by the Nocedas? Okay so like, eventually AU offshoot that follows that premise, except Jasper and Hawk Hunter are there too.
The Golden Guard and the Martlet get blasted through the portal door during a fight and it closes behind them and they're just like, well shit. They have a brief standoff until it becomes clear that they don't have an immediate way back and Hunter is like "OKAY, we are stuck in the Human Realm and as much as it pains me to say this, we need to call a temporary truce so we can work together to survive and find a way home." Potentially this isn't long after that time the Martlet saved Hunter from those people who were attempting to ransom him so he's a little more willing to work with the guy at the moment. Hunter is being VERY MATURE by making the call to cooperate with this criminal, since they obviously need to join forces in this strange and uncharted territory, though once they get home they'll go right back to being enemies. Meanwhile Jasper is like uhhhhhh this is not an eventuality I prepared for but I maybe I can turn it to our advantage.
They make camp in the old abandoned house, because it's just sensible. It's free shelter and it's where the portal spat them out, best to stick around the area. It rains the very first night and there is brief panic followed by the awe of "oh wow it really doesn't boil!" while they stand in it and marvel, which quickly changes to "oh shit now we're cold and wet". They continue to marvel from the cover of the porch and stare at the non-boiling rain and the green grass and trees.
Hunter and Jasper: Wow, it's just like he said.
Hunter, squinting at Jasper suspiciously: Wait, like who said?
Jasper: Uhhhh hey, look, is that a jackalope without antlers?
That night they discover that the issue with old dilapidated houses is that they leak. They're lying on the one patch of dry-but-not-dry-rotted floor and Jasper is like "Hunter. Hunter, please, just give me the staff. I can fix the roof in sixty seconds tops and I promise I'll give it right back" and Hunter is like "THERE IS NO WAY IN HELL I AM GIVING YOU THE STAFF."
The next few days are filled with wilderness survival skills, which is a little ridiculous considering they're in a small pocket of woods in the middle of suburbia, but like, those are HUMANS out there, we can't just APPROACH them! Unfortunately, suburban woodland is not conducive to foraging. Hawk Hunter is adept at catching antlerless jackalopes so they've got that going for them.
Hunter is trying to figure out how to get home, but Jasper is well aware that that was Eda's portal they went through and is pretty sure that it isn't gonna reopen anytime soon. He's also realizing that this could actually be the opportunity he's been waiting for. If they don't go back to the Boiling Isles, he has time to explain things to Hunter. Even if the kid refuses to believe him, what's he gonna do? He can't run back and tell Belos. Jasper might actually have time to convince Hunter of the truth.
(Idk how to justify the portal not opening for 1-2 years, but for the sake of the plot the portal needs to not open. Maybe Eda's taking a break from the Human Realm because the trash slug pickings are so good. Maybe she comes through one time and Jasper pounces on her and tells her she can ONLY DO IT at a predetermined time when he can make sure Hunter doesn't see it. Heck, maybe JASPER somehow has the portal key and hasn't told Hunter and is well aware that the portal WON'T open because he's got their only ticket home… And much later this leads to "WE COULD'VE GONE HOME THIS WHOLE TIME???")
After a few days Jasper's feeling pretty confident that this might actually work so he's like, okay, look, if we're working together it's not really convenient for me to wear this mask all the time, so…I'm gonna take it off. Uh. Please don't freak out.
Hunter: WHY THE FUCK DO YOU LOOK LIKE ME?
Jasper: Hey look, Hawk's brought dinner, I'm gonna go skin this byyyyyyye.
Inevitably, Luz discovers them.
And this is the point where I need to change gears, because tbh I'm having the most fun imagining this AU from Camila's POV.
Luz is like "Mama, I've made some friends! They're magic! They're living in the abandoned house out back! I'm taking them snacks!"
Camila is like MIJA WHAT? and runs after her. She's expecting criminals or delinquents and instead finds a pair of Renaissance Faire hobos. The man is very polite but his son is glaring at her and Luz suspiciously and they both hedge around basic questions like "why are you living in this abandoned house?" and "where did you come from?" with very unconvincing answers. Camila's realistic side is telling her to call the police, but her sci-fi side is taking note of their pointy ears, and the fact that their clothes look way more functional and lived-in than any cosplay she's ever seen, and how Luz keeps insisting that they're magic, and she's just like…y'know what, I'm just gonna leave this be.
Except she can't stay uninvolved because Luz keeps hanging out with these people and she's…glad her daughter is finally making friends, but she is also keeping an eye on them. She has…some concerns.
Camila: So what kind of hawk is that?
Jasper: Uh…brown?
Camila: …Do you have a falconry license?
Jasper: A what?
Camila is like, oh my god. Do I need to call the Fish & Wildlife Service?
She goes over to check on them one day and finds them in the middle of an argument amplified by non-magical staff fighting and she's just like, oh my god. Do I need to call Child Protective Services? Then she realizes that actually Hunter is inflicting most of the injuries here and Jasper's just kinda taking it while Hunter yells at him and she's like. Do…do I need to call Adult Protective Services?
One day she finds them skinning a deer on their front porch and she's like YOU CAN'T JUST DO THAT and they're like what, why? and she's like YOU NEED A HUNTING PERMIT and they're like…why?
At some point Jasper decides to go scope out the town and maybe find a way to acquire some supplies. Camila sees him walking out of the woods by her house and she runs outside to stop him.
Camila: Jasper! You can't just walk around with a mask on!
Jasper: What? Uh…okay, I guess it is a little flashy, I'll just wear the face covering.
Camila: Jasper, you cannot go into town with your face covered, we don't do that here.
Jasper: But my face is going to attract a lot of attention I'd rather avoid?
Camila: You are going to attract SO MUCH MORE attention if you COVER YOUR FACE like a CRIMINAL.
Jasper: Okay, I'll just pull my hood down really far.
Camila: NO ONE WEARS CAPES OR HOODS, JASPER, ESPECIALLY NOT IN SUMMER. Look, how about I just drive you around town, and if anyone asks we'll tell them you're an avid hiker who survived a grizzly bear attack.
Jasper: What's a grizzly bear?
Camila: I'm going to pretend I didn't hear that question. Let me get my car keys. And grab you a t-shirt.
Hunter says something about how Hawk Hunter is an unholy creation of "wild magic" that needs to be destroyed and Camila's like "oh my god Hunter, no, animal cruelty is WRONG, and also all birds of prey are federally protected species" and Hunter's like "it's made of wood, Mrs. Noceda, it's not even really alive" and Jasper bursts out "HUNTER, THINGS THAT ARE MADE OF PALISTROM WOOD ARE DEFINITELY REAL AND ALIVE!" and Camila doesn't understand the resulting argument but while they're yelling she looks at Hawk Hunter and says "if you need a place to hide just knock on my door" and he scrutinizes her for a moment before giving her a solemn nod. She doesn't want to consider the implications of how she apparently just communicated with a bird.
She's really hung up on whether or not she needs to report a kidnapping. On the one hand, they're obviously father and son. On the other hand, Hunter has mentioned needing to get back to his uncle, who apparently raised him, and he doesn't seem very familiar with Jasper at all, and most kidnappings are committed by family members… But also Hunter's uncle kinda sounds like a religious extremist so…maybe Jasper has reverse-kidnapped a kidnapped child?
Jasper obviously cares about Hunter, but Hunter's acting more like an antagonistic roommate than a son. Though maybe that's just a teenager thing? He really doesn't treat Jasper like he's his dad at all though, Camila's pretty sure Jasper didn't raise Hunter. Best she can figure, after piecing bits together over time, Hunter was raised by his religious extremist uncle, who Jasper was also involved with somehow but managed to get away from, and he seems to want to get Hunter away too, but Hunter doesn't agree.
She becomes reasonably certain that they mean no harm (not that they're harmless, she has SEEN them fight), and she has to admit that she likes them, and she supposes she should be grateful that Luz is making friends. But Camila is WELL AWARE that Jasper and Hunter are, like, not…okay. She's not sure what Jasper's deal is but he clearly has issues. Hunter is a nice kid but he walks this weird line between demanding things like he has the power to requisition whatever he wants on a whim and being super nervously polite. Camila refers to Jasper as Hunter's dad one time, and Hunter turns red and shouts "HE'S NOT MY DAD HE'S MY ARCH-NEMESIS" and Jasper just grimaces and Camila is like I have no idea what you two need therapy for but you DEFINITELY need it.
Luz keeps running off to the woods with her Azura books. She says Hunter nitpicks them for everything they get wrong about magic but she doesn't mind because it sparks interesting conversations about what real magic is like. Camila finds herself wondering if Hunter would be more interested in sci-fi.
She starts digging around in her basement to see if there's any old junk they can use. Jasper's like "oooh can I take this typewriter?" and she goes "oh, sure! do you like writing?" and he's like "haha no it's for Hawk, he's upset he can't properly yell at me right now" and she's just like. Uh. Okay then.
Her old sewing supplies are also discovered. Jasper and Hunter are pretty self-sufficient but Camila does help them out a lot and hasn't called the Human Authorities on them so they're always looking for ways to repay her. Jasper offers to mend the pile of clothes she hasn't had time to fix up and she just gives him all these supplies she hasn't touched in years. So he's sitting there with fabric and thread like, okay, it's been a while, what do I want to make? And then he just instinctually starts on the pattern he's made a hundred times before. Hunter walks in on him an hour later and does a double take and goes "Is that Sprig??" and Jasper stabs himself with the needle.
Luz keeps talking about how they're magic, but Camila hasn't seen any magic. Camila isn't going to comment on the alleged magic. Camila DOES notice that every time she goes over the house appears to be a bit more fixed up, and then it somehow has electricity, and Jasper has started bringing her various fruits and vegetables as thanks-for-not-calling-the-cops gifts, which he is apparently growing in the garden that suddenly grew up overnight. There's an avocado tree, of all things. It popped up the day after she invited them over for dinner and served something with avocado in it and commented on how much she loved avocados and how annoyingly expensive they can be. She doesn't know how Jasper managed to get an avocado tree to grow in Connecticut and she's not gonna ask. It's eventually joined by an orange tree and a lemon tree and a coconut tree and after that last one she casually leaves behind a field guide to trees and their growing regions the next time she visits. Jasper might take it as a challenge because next thing she knows there's a plantain tree, too.
Hunter has either decided to trust Jasper with the staff, or has hit the point where he can't stand living in a leaky old house in a woodland that has proven TERRIBLE for foraging and is willing to risk lending Jasper the staff if it improves their situation, or refuses to trust Jasper with the staff but is willing to let Jasper coach him through how to fix up the house and grow the garden. Hunter's like "do you even know how to fix a house?" and Jasper's like "of course I do, and it'll be nowhere near as hard as remodeling a cave without magic" and Hunter's like "okay yeah from the ten seconds I saw of it it was a nice cave" and Jasper's like "aw you remember the cave?" and Hunter's like "shut up."
Luz wants to know allllll about the Boiling Isles and Hunter tells her about how great it is and she sighs like "I wish I could go there" and Hunter's like "Well, once we find our way home, you can come with us! Maybe I could convince my uncle to let you work with me. The Emperor's Coven is great, we get to sleep in until 5AM and we get a whole day off every year and we help bring order and stability to the Empire!" And Luz is like "Never mind, your fantasy world sounds oppressive. Ooh, wait, are there rebels? You said Jasper's your nemesis, does that mean he's a rebel? Maybe I'll just join the rebels" and Hunter's like "If you do that I'm legally obligated to arrest you" and Luz is like "Hey, my mom hasn't gotten you arrested for squatting, you owe me."
Camila actually manages to wheedle answers out of Jasper one day while they're drinking spiked lemonade on the porch (his lemons, her vodka) and she asks "what is you guys' deal?" Jasper admits "I am desperately trying to deprogram my son from a cult" and she's like holy shit okay that actually tracks. Do you want me to get you some books? Do you want me to call Rick Alan Ross?
At some point Hunter storms into Camila's house and announces that he is staying for the night, and possibly the foreseeable future, and then tacks on an anxious "please." Luz starts squealing about a sleepover and Camila is just like "Is…everything okay with you and your father?" and Hunter looks really lost and doesn't answer and lets Luz drag him away. Camila goes to see Jasper that night and finds him sitting on the porch roof gazing up at the suburban light pollution and she calls up "Are you two okay?" and Jasper grimaces down at her and says "I might've…told him about how I created him?" and Camila's like yikes, I hope things don't go this bad with Luz when I give her The Talk. Meanwhile Hunter is laying in a sleeping bag next to Luz, staring at the ceiling and having a crisis.
Idk, I don't actually have any ideas regarding The Reveal or father/son bonding or how this all factors into the show plot or whatever, like, I'm exclusively hooked on Camila being extremely concerned and confused but ultimately deciding that she isn't gonna narc on her weird new neighbors, lol.
I guess regarding father/son things, since this is probably not long after Manny's death and Luz is grieving, we could say she probably talks to Hunter a LOT about her dad, and how much she misses him, and Hunter sits through all these monologues and considers how his arch-nemesis is actually, apparently, his father, and between Luz's grief and being stuck in the Human Realm with no way home and the fact that he has always wondered about his family, he figures he can maybe give Jasper a chance. So that could work.
But really it's like, in the background we have Hunter and Jasper dealing with their fantasy problems and navigating their newfound relationship, and in the FOREGROUND we've got Camila helping them settle in and pass as humans and telling them to stop poaching the local ecosystem, god, this isn't 1600s colonial Connecticut this is suburbia, if you want meat I'll get you some from the grocery store, you give me more than enough avocados to make up for it. Also she's quietly researching squatter's rights and digging into public property records and asking her elderly neighbors questions until she learns that the folks who owned the abandoned house retired to Florida and died 20 years ago and their son who inherited has apparently forgotten he owns the place.
I guess at some point Jasper and Hunter DO go look around town, which is when we get "Why is the Golden Guard symbol on this town's sign?" and then Hunter stares at a certain statue before calling over to Jasper "Hey, who's Caleb Wittebane and do you have any idea why we look exactly like him?" while Jasper is like "Caleb WHO?" and then five seconds later both of them looking at the other statue and going "Is that fucking BELOS?"
Luz: Why are you two suddenly obsessed with researching my boring town's boring history?
Hunter: IT'S IMPORTANT, HUMAN. Tell me everything you know about the Wittebanes!
Luz: Uhhhh idk, I think there was a reenactment at the Halloween festival last year? I didn't pay attention, reenactments are dumb.
Hunter: HOW do you know so little about the place where you live??
Luz: Dude, I've lived here for less than two years. Besides, historical witches are nothing like fantasy ones. They're BORING. That reenactment was a trial. Why would I want to think about the colonial legal process when I'm thinking about witches? Have you seen my report card? History is not one of my special interests.
Unfortunately for Luz, history has just become Hunter and Jasper's special interest, and she is their unwilling guide and provider of context for Human Things. They start exploring Old Gravesfield and she's like "whyyyyyyy are we wandering around an old cemetery full of dead people no one cares about anymore??" while Hunter and Jasper are taking note of old Puritan names on the headstones and Jasper is like "there are WAY too many of these that are similar to past Golden Guard names, that can't be a coincidence." They go to the historical society and low-key grill Jacob Hopkins for info (low-key because the guy is happy to talk and talk and TALK) while Luz is just dying in the background. They don't have ID to get library cards so they keep dragging her to the library to check out books for them. They're reading about colonial history and Puritan philosophy and Luz is just like WHY do you CARE, you guys are from a FANTASY WORLD that is SO MUCH COOLER than this boring old place! Hunter shows her his cloak like "Luz the Golden Guard symbol is on the historic seal of your town" and she's like OH WAIT MAGICAL MYSTERY?? and is suddenly a bit more interested.
Camila comes home one day to find Jasper facedown on her living room floor surrounded by books while Hunter paces around muttering to himself and she goes to Luz in the kitchen like "Uh…are they okay?" and Luz looks up from her phone like "Huh? Oh, yeah, I think they just found out they're Christian or something."
Camila is like. Um. What?
Luz goes on "But not, like, Narnia fantasy generic Christian, like. Weird Christian. I dunno, they've been taking a lot of notes about Puritan beliefs and Bible verses and I think something must've clicked because they both suddenly bluescreened. They haven't said much but I guess there's a lot of stuff that's really uncomfortably familiar to them?"
Camila tentatively says "I was under the impression that Hunter's uncle was some sort of fundamentalist" and Luz nods like "Oh, yeah, Jasper says Belos is like 400 years old and we have a working theory that he might be Philip Wittebane. I'm just waiting for them to finish reprocessing whatever trauma they just realized is probably religious so they can start infodumping what they just figured out."
(In the living room Jasper is like "He insisted on naming you Hunter. Oh my god. Oh my GOD. That witch-hunting ASSHOLE." Hunter is like "I never bothered to doubt the Day of Unity or 'the will of the Titan' but this 'predetermination' thing sounds very similar and also like complete bullshit. Saying it's the will of an invisible man in the sky makes it sound stupid, but with that perspective I guess it's also stupid to say it's the will of a visible corpse on the ground?")
Of course, Luz won't let them obsess over history forever, so they compromise and do other things too. Like watch nature documentaries, which are less boring for Luz but still helpful for Hunter and Jasper because suburban Connecticut is not a great example of the Human Realm's various ecosystems. Camila finds Hunter watching his fifth documentary about wolves and she's like "are wolves your favorite animal now?" and he's like "no, this is just…extremely important research" and she's like "of course mijo" and then gets him a pack of wolf patches that he sews on all his clothes. She doesn't understand why he and Jasper are so offended by giraffes, though.
Hunter also DOES turn out to love sci-fi. A lot. Camila lets him go through her Cosmic Frontier collection and he flies through it as fast as Luz flew through Azura. Camila isn't sure why he latches on to Chief Engineer O'Bailey so strongly but she knows a comfort blorbo when she sees one. Luz is like "ugh but why sci-fi?" and Hunter is like "the only reason your 'fantasy genre' isn't realistic fiction is because it's WRONG."
At some point Luz has to go back to school. Camila takes note that Hunter is not going to school. She asks about it one time and receives two blank stares in response and then Hunter's like "I finished my schooling years in advance?" and Jasper's like "yeah he's brilliant, he's got published papers in academic journals and everything" and Hunter's like "wait you know about that?" and Jasper's like "of course I know about that! they're really good" and Hunter looks a little touched by this and Camila decides she isn't gonna push the school thing cuz she's pretty sure neither of them legally exist anyway.
Luz complains about school and Hunter is like "You need to pay attention to your teachers and apply yourself to your education!" and Camila is like oh thank god, finally, someone being a positive influence on Luz's academic life. Except then Hunter continues like "Following the rules is the most important thing anyone can do for the betterment of society, deviating from the norm puts all of civilization at risk!" and Camila's like wait no not like that.
On the plus side though Luz does finally get good grades in history! At least for the Colonial America segment. Hunter is offended by her lackluster academic performance so he starts reading her textbooks and helping her with homework and Camila is just thankful that Luz finally has a supportive study buddy. Though she does have to put her foot down when she realizes Luz is trying to get Hunter to write her essays. You have to do your own work, mija; if he's really good enough to get published in academic journals that don't exist, that means your teachers aren't going to believe you wrote it anyway.
So yeah, this goes on for a year or two, and then TOH happens.
I don't really have any ideas regarding how this entire setup would end up affecting the series proper, but I guess it's like. TOH starts but Luz and Hunter and Jasper already know everything. They've figured out the Wittebane backstory and with Jasper's knowledge they've connected it to Belos. They don't know why a witch hunter has made himself emperor, but Belos is obviously evil so it can't be for good reason. Luz gets to the Boiling Isles and she's just like "AW YEAH the last couple of years were just my prologue, TIME TO BE THE MAIN CHARACTER!" while Jasper is like "Hunter please don't do anything stupid I am begging you" and Hunter is like "I JUST WANT TO ASK BELOS ABOUT HIS THOUGHTS ON DOUBLE PREDESTINATION!" (Hell, it's been a year or two, potentially Hunter storms straight into six-month-old Will and is like "oh my god" while Jasper is like "I TOLD YOU" and Will is like "this job gets more suspicious every day.")
Basically Luz, Hunter, and Jasper would end up speedrunning the entire anti-Empire part of the plot. Belos is like "wait what's happening" when the girl he thought he duped centuries ago ends up being super aware of everything he's doing, and Raine is like "wait WHAT'S happening?" when the Martlet suddenly reappears with plans to kill Belos, and Eda is like "ahaha what is HAPPENING?" when Marty and the two kids tagging along with him start causing chaos. (And Will can just be like "wait what IS happening? hmm.")
But meanwhile Camila is left staring at Vee like. Okay. I have a snake daughter now. My human daughter's run off to another realm but I can probably count on Jasper to make sure she doesn't get snatched up by Hunter's uncle's weird religious cult. I've already paid for summer camp so I'm gonna send my new snake daughter off to learn human skills and we'll figure this out.
And then she does her best to keep an eye on Jasper and Hunter's house and keep Jasper's improbable avocado tree alive while he's away. He'd better get back before the autumn frost sets in because she is NOT losing this avocado tree. This is her favorite tree in the entire world and it has done wonders for her grocery bill. Jasper has come over to her house in the dead of winter with a basket full of fresh-picked avocados on multiple occasions and she has never once pointed out that avocados do not grow in the cold, because she highly values her avocado access.
At some point the Day of Unity happens and the gang ends up in the Human Realm but at least Jasper has a house and a garden and knows how to operate here so that takes a lot of weight off Camila. And since the house is nice and lived in it's very easy to see the weird lump of sludgy goop trying to crawl out the door. Camila scoops it up into a glass jar and stares at the single blue eye that stares back at her and asks "Do I want to know what this is?"
"That's my FUCKING UNCLE!" Hunter snaps, snatching the jar from her and shaking it. "Alright asshole, I don't know HOW you survived but I'm glad you did because I have QUESTIONS. Dad, can you grab all my books on Calvinist philosophy? Luz, I need a notebook."
"Hunter I am NOT helping you go insane over Puritans again."
Camila figures they know what they're doing and leaves them to it. She doesn't really want to know how the sludge is Hunter's uncle, but she supposes it's fitting. And she has to admit that she can't really ignore the magic thing anymore. She has a snake daughter now. Magic is clearly real.
Though there's always going to be a small part of her that groans and wonders whyyyyyyyyy did it have to be fantasy? Why magic? Why couldn't it have been a spaceship that landed in the backyard?
Grabs u
Okay I am an angst goblin tho so IMAGINE they tumble through the portal for Reasons and like two weeks later while hunter is out foraging for mushrooms or something Eda pops up and jasper has to tackle her to keep Hunter from seeing, and he's like listen, here's the infodump on what is Up with me and hunter now. This is my best chance to deprogram him. I just need a little more time. So don't come back when he will be here to see you. And Eda is like oh okay sure. Only jasper just keeps pushing off the inevitable "it's time to tell Hunter we can leave" even once he actually managed to get hunter on his side regarding "Belos should not be beating you" and maybe even "the empire is bad-" and, you know. "He is lying to you." ONLY.... Eventually the cookie has to crumble, right? Eventually the bubble has to pop.
One day Eda pops in and pops out, but Luz followed her and left the door open. Just long enough for hunter to see it! And hunter is like omg a way back. But like. For whatever reason he can tell that jasper doesn't want to like maybe he sees jasper closing the door or something and they get into a huge argument and hunter realizes that jasper has known how to get home for YEARS and has kept it secret- so. You know. "He is lying to you." Then the door pops back open and vee comes through, only for hunter to be like fuck YOU and dart straight into the door and slam it behind him, leaving jasper and vee standing outside like HHHHHHHHH
Jasper desperately trying to keep things together like. He knows Eda will be back soon. Either she will toss the human back out or she will come for more crap in a few days. He can keep this under control. He tells vee to pretend to be luz, hey, I was also a slave to the emperor, yada yada ill protect you, just make sure Camila doesn't find out her fucking kid is missing. And he's like okay: I have three months to get back to the boiling isles and retrieve luz and send her home before Camila notices and also I need to find hunter and Also convince him not to hate me for this and ARRRRGHHHH this sucks.
Hunter doesn't know Eda but he DOES know Luz and like. Imagine the hilarity of after Luz and hunter being neighbors and friends for like three years where he has said he could use magic but she's never actually seen it he like, leaps in front of her as if to protect her from Eda with his staff poofing oh some magic armour like back! Away from my innocent human friend who cannot protect herself! And she's just like what the FUCK was that. Gimme that fucking stick right now
Of course once Eda realizes she's gonna be like shit I gotta go get your dad but Hunter is like DAD? and Eda is like wow he really hasn't told you shit huh yikes. But Hunter knows Eda is gonna turn him in now so he's gotta skedoodle. Time to be a weird homeless child occasionally bursting into the main plot because he IS friends with Luz but he's avoiding jasper and Eda and anyone who might turn him in. So he's also like in hiding to not be recognized. And then will exists as the current Golden guard and I'm sure he annoys the piss out of Lilith.
But also just imagining jasper and Camila as getting to be really good friends and he's been insanely cagey with his past but she has gathered a general idea. Finding out like. The Awful Details. Also Hunter is out here trying to protect Luz- maybe even by sending her home lol. Jasper at the owl house with Luz and Eda while he tries to find hunter... And at SOME point Darius is going to show up and oh my god you're ALIVE? you've been in another DIMENSION? YOU BEING IN ANOTHER DIMENSION WAS UNRELATED TO YOU BEING SECRETLY NOT DEAD???
And Raine like. Seeing jasper without a mask and knowing who he is. Finally knowing what's up with hunter and him. And now jasper is staying with Eda. And jasper knows TOO much of raines shit. He knows they're a rebel leader and that's dangerous knowledge! Ohhh it's so dire here....

A Guided Tour of the Fortress Blizzardpaddles
Tumblr media
Starting from the top of the fortress, I have a mist generator on the roof
Tumblr media
Above the entrance I have a public tavern and a small library. Archer towers surround my fort, though they've never been put to use.
Tumblr media
Before the archer towers, I build this platform for my archers. Also never used. The platform in the center was originally just meant to keep snow and rain from falling into the fortress.
Tumblr media
At ground level, we have corpse and refuse stockpiles, beehives, nest boxes, and a garden.
Tumblr media
On the main floor, we have the trade depot right at the entrance. I separate my trade goods into two stockpiles: one for elves, and one for everyone else. I recently overhauled my military and relocated some of the barracks and archery ranges. at the south is my fishery, which is protected with iron grates in the river and glass blocks above. I'm not sure why but I have perpetual ice in the river. To the east are some new farms I'm building to scale up my dye and cloth production. I also have my surface hospital here, seed storage, and a mist generator.
Tumblr media
Below I have archery ranges, soap making, my citizen's/residents tavern (recently rearranged) milling and pressing, farms, and farmer workshops. I'm proud of that tower sticking up out of the water. The river here freezes from mid-autumn to early spring but it was a race against the clock to get that watertight.
Tumblr media
Here I have food & Drink storage for the tavern above. I also have a large library with hundreds of written works. Beneath the soapmakers workshops is a stockpile of lye, oil, and tallow. Below the farmers workshops is a stockpile for wool, milk, and processable plants.
Tumblr media
Food and drink production, including butchers, ashery (supplying lye upwards), stills, and kitchens.
Tumblr media
Storage and supplies for food & drink production, and block & brick storage. meltable objects are above the smelters for recycling.
Tumblr media
Manufacturing level. I try to keep workshops grouped by supply chain, with stockpiles above and below in a way that makes sense. See below for an example.
Tumblr media
Wood feeds the carpenters and the wood furnace. Fuel is near all the furnaces, kilns, and forges. Textile industry is grouped together. This requires quite a bit of planning, and learning from experience from previous forts.
Tumblr media
TEMPLES! I started making quadruple-size temples for the faiths with ~100 followers, because the smaller ones were getting very crowded. Every temple has a bunch of instruments, and almost all of them have a dedicated performer. The large temples are built with steel block walls.
Tumblr media
Nobles apartments, and museum.
Tumblr media
Guildhalls. I'm starting to build more even if the guilds aren't established yet. As my economy grows more complex, there are a lot more job titles, so there are fewer guilds being established.
Tumblr media
Residential quarter. This is my first time giving everyone a 4x4 bedroom. I used to do 1x3 bedrooms, which allowed me to fit 12 rooms per block. I think the dwarves prefer the extra space though. I spent several years renovating the bedrooms by replacing stone walls with porcelain brick, and they LOVE it!
Tumblr media
Tombs. Too many tombs. Most of them are full, a lot of them are pets though. My dungeons is here, with my Cask of Amontillado'd werelizard in the northeast corner.
Tumblr media
And finally, several layers below, is my cavern hospital. It's really nice to have a second hospital down below for when the Amphibian Folk come and fuck with us.
That's all for this fort. My FPS hovers between 8 and 15 so it takes about 15 hours to go through a single year. I don't want to be done with it, but it's getting unbearably slow.

A vent post/condensed list of my grievances regarding the state of my current place of living. Well, partially to vent and partially as a cathartic way to keep tabs.
Either way, there is no amount of commission I could do to improve this. I have lived here for maybe two months, and all of this was found out through experience and not actually looking for problems. To preface, I know the question. Why didn't you get a home inspection? Well, you see, had I been involved in the buying process I would have.
It was heated with open flame gas heaters
Undisclosed roaches
Stove top is rusted so bad there's a line on one side that's just missing (not entirely sure if the oven works actually)
Two windows lead nowhere
One window shattered
One window removed and replaced with ply board. There is a window ac unit caulked into it.
That window ac unit does not have a filter… only old dish towels stuffed into it…
Something also lives in that window ac unit.
water pours into the garage when it rains
It looked like a junkyard (we had to rent a dumpster and even that wasn't enough)
There's a blanket hung on the wall, it's hiding a giant spot… I don't know what the spot is.
the furnace is all sealed off, including the vents
the wiring is ALL fucked (and might also all be piggybacked)
there is a circuit breaker AND a fuse box
A single bad outlet may have taken out the power in 2/3 of the house
I don't think under the trailer is insulated at all… There is a fan that leads under it to move warm air down there, intended to keep the pipes from freezing.
The bathroom floor is not secured, and boards are popping up
There is no ventilation in the bathroom and the walls have pieces taken out
pretty sure one of the pieces is screwed in over where the ventilation used to be
there is a draft in the bathroom so bad, that on windy days it blows the bathroom cabinet under the sink open
the toilet is less than two inches away from the claw foot tub
why is there a claw foot tub in a trailer… the step up into it is too high for my mother and there is no grab bar for safety
There is at least one hole in the roof that I suspect an animal lives in
While writing this list I was informed it was indeed a bad outlet which has since been replaced, but also “It is replaced, but the wires are too short and not attached very good” so we cannot use
I also don't think they understand that this is an active fire hazard
I don't have a bedroom, I have a bed in the living room
There are three doors that lead outside. One is the front door. The other two are held closed with boards. (honorary mention the door that leads to the garage, who's handle came off in my hand)

The ending IS actually explained, they left clues in the aftermath and some dialog in the game
Heidrich the badger was being arrested, which is imo who I think tried to kill Finley and the one sabotaging the hospital... heidrich tried to kill him because of his financial fraud and the destruction of the hospital as a cheap, careless, selfish bastard that he is. He used blackmail on Theobald... ugh Roman Heidrich... Theobald well he really wanted to be able to actively help St. Ursula Hospital in the best way possible he could.. He was appointed chief physician with the help of heidrich, who had alot of influence over the hospital and made him chief as part of the restructuring but was used and pressured and blackmailed into taking money from the hospital for his own crappy bs reasons and if they got caught Theobald would have taken all of the blame as chief so that's why he fled... but he came back to try to help more people, in the end he met his end and tbh I saw it more as a form of suicide from guilt.
The deer brothers who are dumb and drank Shigella nearly killing em which also causes vomiting are used as an example of being poisoned, the town suffers from something similar meaning they also drank something that had some kind of bacterial infection/poison, okay so Finley actually talks to the statue and talks of a dirt not even rain washes away and also the bever man said hes going to fix the fountain for the festival, he mentioned the old pipes from the fountain....that they have seen better days and that the pipes needed proper cleaning/needed to be replaced Ideally but said its not his problem, so we know the pipes are old dirty nasty pipes 🤢....at the festival they turn the water on from the fountain which is warm/hot water which they use that water for the stew for the annual stew making competition which is actually what hurts them... people all around in that town sample the stews and guess what? The towns people get sick within the next few days... Findley and the Jaguar doctor doesn't get sick because they didn't have any stew, also a few people who were too busy making the stew didn't eat the stew either.
Tumblr media
The fire was caused by the bad storm caving in the roof which caused damage on the fifth floor so when they tried to turn the power on it started an electrical fire. They show the repair bulldog and bever man fixing the hospital so in the end we know it'll be repaired and they will start anew with their lives and probably properly maintain keeping the building in tip top shape this time with more workers.
You can just Google what deadly bacteria can be found in nasty old dirty rusty probably moldy pipes and make a theory since we didn't get an exact diagnosis.
Tumblr media
I honestly couldn't even guess though what bacteria or even diseases can survive warm or hot water. I cannot confirm what disease or poisoning they could have got though. ~All in all it was the fountain water that caused the downfall of the people of porcupine and the burning hospital was just another downfall which was really sad....
The game has alot of meaningful dialog on subjects that are important such as Healthcare, friendship and loneliness ect... Karl, Mia and Irma are my favorite characters.Fall of porcupine gave me tears, goosebumps, alertness, anxious, awwww, and anger feelings.
Looks like Finley got a new plant to and is doing better after all the hard times he went through and will more likely continue his job helping people once the hospital is back up :)
Also here's a link you should read up on that might help better understand some things to on pipes since it's related ->

Japan day 4! More Kyoto!
Started with a photo op of the yasaka pagado part of the hokan-ji temple. And then we were off to the kiyomizu-dear temple known for its city views. It was a little cloudy but we still got some great views!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
From there went the silver pagado temple and then down the philosophers path. It was raining but the path was very peaceful as we walked along the river. It ended at the Eikan-do temple. Eiakan-do had a really cool art exhibit inside and then the gardens were full of fall colors.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We then went to our tea ceremony experience. It was very curated for tourists but felt very respectful and informative. It took a lot more whisking to get the tea right than I thought, but it was all very delicious. And I got to wear a purple kimono so I obviously had a good time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Overly long travel diary
Anthony 400 yen first temple kitomizu dera
Emma 500 yen each second temple, silver temple
Anthony 1000 yen each eikan do
We start the day at kiyomizu temple, stopping on the way to take pictures of a pagado. The view from the temple is really nice even if it is a bit cloudy. The temple itself is also a really pretty red.
We then walk for a bit and find a dog park to have breakfast in.
We take a bus over to the philosophers path. The bus is super crowded buy we survived.
We then decide to walk up to the silver pavilion the counter part to the gold pavilion we saw yesterday. Because sulver tarnishes more quickly it’s not as shiny but the grounds are still lovely. Sadly they don’t have a silver temple key chain to match my one from yesterday.
After we head back down to the philosophers path which runs along the river. Some of the leaves are really pretty colors but a lot have fallen already. The philosophers path was so full of cute bridges. It was pretty rainy but it kind of added to it in a way. There are also people with signs at various crossroads of the philosophers path to help direct tourists. There are also various public maps with the major tourist sites on them.
The philosophers path ends very near to our next temple so we head in. The ticket is more than a lot of them but we quickly see that it’s because they also have an art exhibit in the temple. They give you a little plastic bag to carry your shoes in while you walk through the temple and see the art. It’s pretty cold today so my feet are cold and the wooden floor feels extra cold.
Eikan do had lots of art and explanations about the pure land where you go when you reach enlightenment. The monk who more or less founded the temple thinks that anyone can reach enlightenment and you don’t have to spend endless hours in mediation. The temple also is one of the few or maybe only places where the two competing art schools of the day would have their art side by side.
The fall foliage around the temple is really gorgeous and their are some adorable bridges. I try to get a picture with a bridge from on another bridge but didn’t get the angles right so you can’t really see the bridge. But there’s still pretty colors and a pond. We also walk up to the pagado at the top and take in the views of the cities. I love how all the temples are nestled into the mountains/hillsides so you can get pretty views from them.
There are other temples nearby but we’re feeling pretty templed out and will see more temples tomorrow so decide to just head back to the area out hotel is in and get lunch.
Twntenyu for lunch ramen. Anthony paid 2180 for both. They had up little dividers between all the seats. It was in a big building full of mostly offices with stores on the bottom floor. Most of the other people seemed to be business people on their lunch break. I got ramen and gyoza and it was delicious but the gyoza burned the roof of my mouth a little. The warm ramen tho really hit the spot on a cold and dreary day.
We head back to the hotel to regroup. We end up taking a nap (and having some quality time)due to not finding anything else to see that we are willing to walk to. And I’m tired.
After we head out to go to a tea ceremony I booked online previously. We start with getting dressed in kimonos. They braid my hair and pin it up into a bun. I am allowed to picked my own kimono and I find a dark purple one with pink flowers. Putting it on is an experience. There are two ladies working together wrapping you all up and tying you in. There are a lot more little skinny ties than I would’ve expected. And then there’s a hard thing for your middle for the shape and then finally the big sash that goes around the middle and ties into a bow. It’s a little constricting but not too bad. I wouldn’t want to have run or need to do any deep breathing in it but fine for standing around and sitting.
They give you a pretty bag so you can take your phone and whatever with you (they know people want to take pictures in the kimonos)and then a big numbered bag to leave the rest of your stuff in. They also give you little toe socks to wear with the shoes.
We head back to the waiting room and take a couple pictures. My boyfriend tolerates the pictures. There’s a lovely women from Portugal on her honeymoon who takes a couple for us and gets one of my hair and the bow in the back
We head into the room where they show us how we can sit and how to arrange the kimono. She tells us to stay comfortable. I do not succeed in the little sweeping motion she showed to get the kimono to look pretty while sitting and it keeps gaping funny at the bottom but it’s fine.
She starts with a detailed explanation of what tea ceremony is. It’s all about the one moment and one time we have here together. And being full of respect harmony tranquilly and balance(?). She then shows us how to make the tea. There’s a lot of cleaning and the tools and doing everything deliberately and respectfully.
We start by eating the little sweets. One is hard like a smartie and has a swan on it and the other is rice paper wrapped around red bean paste. She has cut the pastry in half with a toothpick and it’s surprisingly difficult. She then shows us how we are supposed to whisk the tea.
I thought i whisked mine enough but when she comes around she says I need to do it a lot more.
The tea ceremony involves a lot more whisking than I tried to do at first, but it’s fun. The sweets before it our lovely.
We take a couple more pictures after in the pretty tea room. There’s art in the panels. The lighting isn’t great for my face (I think my head blocked a can light or something but otherwise the pictures are great.
It’s very much an experience curated for tourists and a bit of a sampler or intro to traditional Japanese cultur but it felt respectful and not gimmicky. Our tea group was all couples from different countries and about half were on their honeymoon.
We then walk through nishiki market and buy chopsticks. I buy some pretty purple ones. 6100 yen. I get three, two lavender and one sparkly. I realize too late that I probably could’ve gotten another of the sparkly and gotten a set of four but it’s fine. I also get three chopstick rests that are some sort of adorable sea slugs (I get three, one purple, but there was a fourth design but it was orange and I didn’t love it. The other two were blue and polka dot.
Apparently the yen hit its lowest in 30 years relative to the dollar.
Dinner is at a sort of americaish small plate place after we can’t get into the restaurant my uncle recommended. I try brown sugar shochu it is good but not as sweet as I wanted. We get garlic bread (with pesto), gapao rice, pork loin, and fried chicken. We then get a Dutch baby with gelato for dessert that they unexpectedly add fruit to. I hate when desserts do that because I don’t like fruits and then it can kind of ruin the taste of whatever it’s on with its sauce or whatever. And with dessert if it’s not delicious I don’t really want it. I eat the edges of my half of the pancake and then have my boyfriend finish the parts that got soaked with fruit juice
