Well instead of the pink vinyl, we got a tour movie announcement!! I'm definitely excited and it will be so cool to watch in theaters and see it again! twenty one pilots also put one of their concerts livestreams in theaters and it was so cool to see everything on the big screen since it wasn't available anywhere else either..and it will be cool cuz they're both my sister and I's favorite artists. I was honestly surprised it was so soon! It's very cool to see the pairs of the surprise songs and how they connect..especially with two songs I wouldn't have thought of! One that came to mind is Evermore and I'm only Me when I'm with You. Probably my favorite song and one of my least favorites..but it was clear when she performed it..it was towards the fans and that made it special. One of my fav artists Soccer Mommy actually did a cover of that song and I think I prefer her version..lol. I love seeing any Lover song getting played and they were so good! Someone also pointed out every song had the word lose in a lyric which is something I wouldn't have thought of.
By the way, I hope you had so much fun seeing Maisie the other night! She really seems like a fun energetic performer. She also has a twin sister and I'm curious why her sister doesn't seem to go on tour with her? Lol. I loveher album..but I actually didn't at first, it had to grow on me. But I wonder why her lyrics seem similar but different to Taylor. Like she wrote a lot about breakups in the album..but by actually mentioning the breakup which I thought was weird. Compared to Taylor who wrote Red the same age as her..but how it's more about heartbreak to me. The only heartbreak song to me is There it Goes I guess..and Wendy is like a mix of Love Story and The Other Side of the Door..but also seems inspired by Cardigan. Maybe cuz it's her 2nd album too..that it reminds me more of Fearless, but Lost the Breakup is pretty similar to We are Never too. It's just something I noticed and was wondering if you had any thoughts on this. I know they are different situations and writers though. Like I have written lyrics referencing both Peter Pan..or not growing up, and a song called History which is nothing like her songs too so I guess I wanted more or something different..idk!
Wow that's so cool about the Night Circus..I had no idea it had the potential to be a musical. The songs were good and it seemed similar to something I was trying to describe with cool sets and costumes. I will definitely read it in October since you recommended it! For Breakfast Club, I thought there might be too many characters to each have their own song and how they're mostly in the same room a lot of the time might make it hard. Another one of my favorites is 10 things I hate about you..but that's based on Taming of the Shrew which is Kiss Me Kate that already exists. I love Funny Face so much and think it could work great as a musical with the costumes and balloon scene and dancing. I heard the Oklahoma revival was a lot darker which might have made some people dislike it but I understand what they were trying to do after reading the article. I think a revival of The Producers or Man of La Mancha are two more I would like to see and any Sondheim musical..maybe Passion or Funny Thing. You could probably make those somewhat different or darker. I actually read an article about the plan to move a new Sondheim musical to Broadway the other day!
The book is just fine to me so far. I'm on chapter 12 but will probably read more today..maybe to chapter 20. I wasn't exactly expecting to love it anyway though. None of the characters stuck out to me so far but I do like reading about family issues in books. It is pretty similar to Some Other Now by Sarah Everett to me though. That one was kinda a love triangle between two brothers but Im not sure if that was going to happen in this book too but that's what i'm thinking so far. Its not a problem being similar but it just gives me something to compare it to i guess. That book I think I did not care for the present part of the story and only liked the past after a while but I'm not having that issue with this book. Like I skipped near the end with that one and I hope it doesn't happen with this book. I do love triangles but only when I have an opinion on it..which is not yet and in that book it was kinda used for suspense or whatever. I have read a lot in a day before and it makes sense to want to finish quickly. It has been nice just focusing on one book for now too. This might be a book I don't have much to say about it so far though so it makes sense that you gave it 3 stars. My reading habits definitely change every week..sometimes I don't read for a few weeks and sometimes I read a bit everyday and sometimes I read a lot in one sitting..like 3 hours..so it really depends on my mood, if I have time, and also the book. I'll see if I can get used to 30 minutes around the same time every day though. Hope you're doing good!
hellloooo friend!! it's been a hot minute! i don't think i've ever seen a concert movie in a cinema but i've seen a fair share of livestreams and other recorded performances — for taylor, and other artists! i do remember going to see the proshot of an american in paris at ipic though, but that definitely has a very different vibe! i love i'm only me when i'm with you — honestly, i think debut is just ... so solid of an album and i have such nostalgic memories with it, but it's just like phenomenal as an album. i'm super curious to see if she'll continue doing a midnights song every night + something else for the international leg, or if she'll mix it up a bit!
god, i love maisie! maisie's genuinely one of my favorite people to see live because her stage presence is just so good but i think she's just such a strong lyricist too. i can't wait to see how her career grows :") i think maisie's sophomore album is really lovely in the fact that "the band and i" is the only real love song on it! and i remember @cages-boxes-hunters-foxes talking about taylor & maisie's songwriting styles and how similar but also also very different they are! i don't really think that lost the breakup / we are never are similar, but i'll give them both a listen in a bit! i personally loved the good witch more than you signed up for this, but i really love you signed up for this (and also trying, dressed too nice for a jacket, etc). maisie has, in my opinion, just always been a very strong songwriter! i also really love seeing how many young singer-songwriters talk about their love of taylor, and seeing how taylor's music has influenced them if that makes sense? like the way maisie's vulnerable in her lyrics ("called my mother in a denny's") reminds me in a way of taylor's? i don't think i'm making a ton of sense right now. but i think you can see taylor's influence in like, griff's music (who i love!! and i'm so happy taylor gave griff a shoutout! griff and maisie have a song together — happy hunting ground) for example, and a lot of younger, gen-z artists.
i saw the 2019 revival of kiss me kate and thought it was fun, but i didn't love it (it was also my intro to kiss me kate, to be fair). i did really appreciate it as an art, but it just wasn't my cup of tea! the oklahoma revival though ... chef's kiss. i think the oklahoma revival, and the spring awakening revival are some of the best revivals we've seen lately. i would love to see more sondheim! i also really loved the recent company revival, and i'm really excited for the tour next year!!
definitely curious about your thoughts on the book + where you are in it now!! 🤍 i'm doing a september readathon with my friend jamie @goodwitchs, so i'm hoping to get back to my usual 15~20 books/month this month after not reading a lot over the summer! hope you're doing well!! <3

Hi! Thank you for your thoughtful and informative blog. I am a new 🐢 after watching The Untamed and I enjoy reading your blog. I have a question about GG’s appearance in Day Day Up. I read a comment on IG, that it was not related to The Untamed promotions and GG was there as DD’s “special person”. Is this true? If so, then it would totally explain the other hosts reaction towards GG. Because when I watched the episode, it seems like the other hosts were looking at GG and DD fondly. Kinda like how I would look when I see a friend and their significant other together for the first time.
Hi, new turtle! 💛🐢💛
Thanks so much for your kind words, I'm glad you're enjoying my blog!
Tumblr media
Yes, it is true that it was not an Untamed promo appearance. GG attended as DD's personal guest.
Fake, fan fiction, CPN.
Anon is talking about this episode of DDU (Eng subs can be found here):
youtube
Yes, it's true that GG was brought to DDU as a special guest of DD, for the 11 anniversary special episode. The previous year he had brought Yixuan, Wenhan and Cheng Xiao, and there were some funny moments, well worth watching.
youtube
And GG attended the following year as DD's special guest.
There was even a bit of supposed drama between GG and DD over this event, because of a scheduling conflict that almost made the appearance not happen at all.
There was a fake rumor that DD was overheard arguing on the phone with someone about choosing something else over him. Fans speculated that it might be because GG was scheduled for a 2-day Olay commercial shoot, and because of a scheduling conflict GG wouldn't be able to attend the DDU taping.
Fake rumors are unconfirmed, and should be taken with a grain of salt, but there is some evidence to support the idea that DD might have been hurt/upset by GG's situation.
DD filmed several interviews in what would have been day 1 of GG's Olay filming (when DD would presumably have known that GG wasn't going to make it to the DDU taping). In all of those interviews he was particularly savage and seemed to be in a very bad mood.
GG ended up requesting that the Olay shoot be completed in one day, and he flew to Changsha that night so he could attend the DDU taping the following day. This was confirmed by the director of the Olay shoot during a livestream.
DD seemed grumpy in the pre-show interview, and only softened up through the course of the day as GG charmed him out of his funk.
Xiaoman M did a 2-part series on that whole situation, which includes some of that footage for those who are curious:
youtube
youtube
I think it's fair to say that the close nature of their relationship is confirmed by GG's willingness to dramatically cut back on the filming schedule for a major endorsement brand like Olay, so he could attend the taping of a variety show. It seems unlikely he would do that for just anyone/anything.
It definitely felt like GG meeting the in-laws for the first time as a couple. There was even talk that the DDU team had made a Weibo post about DD "bringing GG home to meet the family" which was later edited to remove that reference. I can't find that post so I might be misremembering it, if anyone has it let me know.
Anyway, the appearance itself took on the tone of a boyfriend meeting the family for the first time. They even went through old photo albums together. They also performed a couple of songs together and did some other cute activities. There were a lot of interesting moments and fancam candies that came out of that appearance as well, including (just to name a few):
DLS accidentally bumping into GG and apologizing to DD
Some parts having to be reshot because GG and DD were having too much fun together
DD supposedly calling GG baobao (baby) when he told GG about the reshoots
When they were grouped together for an activity and had to choose a name, DD supposedly suggested 'BJYX' and GG shook his head, and in the end they went with 'Yizhan'
GG tasting meat skewers ahead of DD, and telling DD which ones he can eat that aren't too spicy
At one point DD appearing to forget he was a host, and almost sitting down with GG rather than standing onstage with his hosting brothers
Some hilarious Hunan TV editing that only enhanced the whole 'couple' vibe of it all, including one moment when text referencing "The Boy DD Likes" appeared while GG's face was on the screen (38:15 in the video, it was in reference to the song Nanhai, but interesting timing on that title, production team!)
Some of the fancam moments seem real (the meat skewers one, for example), and some I have my doubts about or feel are unconfirmed (baobao). Whatever the case may be, turtles seemed to enjoy it as much as GGDD did.
There was a rumor or report that GG went with DD and the DDU brothers for dinner and karaoke after the show, which, if true, would have given them more time to get to know GG.
In any case one thing's certain - the DDU team really started changing how they treated DD in the show after that appearance with GG. Up until that point they'd always treated him like the eligible bachelor and constantly tried to pair him off with women or put him in awkward dating situations on the show, but after that episode all that stopped and they began treating him like a married man, and teasing him about GG, sometimes in some fairly overt ways.
For example, the DDU brothers teased DD about Brightest Star in the Night Sky a week or two before GG performed it on TV.
Anyway, Anon, hope this helps paint a clearer picture for you! You weren't imagining things - they were looking at GG and DD very fondly, like the cute couple they are!
If you're new you might find my masterlist post helpful.

🍄Mon 21 Dec ‘20🎉
Liam says he just finished his last thing of the year- CONGRATS BUD I know you were stressed about getting it all done!!- and issues a formal thank you to a faithful helper: his laptop, which “has seen more zooms than I've had dinners, thank you... you can rest now.” That last thing he did was an interview about the wizarding world thing, not yet posted, although he then comes back one more time to post a santa-hat bedtime selfie captioned 'merry christmas you filthy animals'. He's leaving us with plenty of prerecorded content to keep the updates going during his break though; for example he and Roman Kemp have something coming on the 27th, which makes sense what with it being a day ending in a Y and all, it's something about a naughty or nice list, I guess we'll see. And in their fourth to last alarm today, the final round of christmas cracker jokes-- bringing it up to date with an “elf isolation” punchline, nice! I mean not in the sense of being funny but like, timely, also Liam is actually back on the alarm so cheers to that.
They could have hit up Louis for jokes-- he's famous for them! Apparently! A museum exhibition in Baltimore (viewable virtually) quotes him as the author of a vaguely science-y joke-- (“why did the mushroom go to the party? because he's a fungi!”). He definitely isn't the originator of it but me as the curator who was like 'well he said this once and any excuse to write Louis' name on this wall, LET'S DO IT'. Everyone but you is out here telling bad jokes Harry, come reclaim your crown sir!
Niall puts on a cowboy accent for the dramatic unboxing of a Diplo promo package (LP, hankie- “very sexy!”, t-shirt, USB stick- “jeez haven't seen one of these in a while”), it's for a country album with features from Julia Michaels, Cam, Orville Peck, and more that came out back in May, and he knocks off some official sponcon unboxing as well, looking cozy in the promotional knitwear.
Aaaand the Clarks are at it again! First grandma Ruth said Louis was in LA with Freddie until two days ago (she also said he was going to spend xmas with him, pick one lady, but anyway) and everyone put on their thinking caps and were like okaaaay he COULD have flown to LA the day after his show and been there the 13th-18th but that seems crazy and would mean NO quarantine on either end (definitely not allowed in either place), but there's a rumor that Harry is back in London maybe Louis went to LA and got him or something?? But just when they almost had us, enter Brett to try to oversell and screw it all up- in response to a fan pointing out how ridiculous that was, Brett said 'no it's not, Louis was there for two whole weeks his livestream was just prerecorded' LMAO. This is pretty epic since your options are now: you can believe that Louis pulled a conspiracy of moon landing level complexity to pretend that a show that had been recorded previously was live, enlisting not just Veeps but also dozens of people also pretending it was happening at that time, many of them on their obscure official business accounts, without a single slip up, for NO REASON (he could have just visited the kid at... any other time, or had the show at a different time, or been like here's a prerecorded show), OR you can believe that Brett and his family are, hmmm, giant liars! Wild notion!! Sooo anyway guys tell me again how YOU don't believe in wacky conspiracy theories like us crazypants larries... I'm waiting...

💙 Thurs 1 Oct ‘20 💙
We MADE IT! By that, I OF COURSE mean the AMAZING iTunes chart jump that Walls had today, a full nine months after its release (like almost to the day!). It re-entered US charts sometime in the middle of the night at number 1084, and was picked up by an update account (HLDaily) on twitter - they urged new fans to go buy Walls if they had not already. And oh boy, did they! As of press time,  Walls has hit NUMBER ONE IN 17 COUNTRIES (including the US UK and India which did not hit number one at release time) and re-entered the worldwide iTunes charts at number 147, and I expect it will keep climbing. As Louis said: “Boom!”
To cap it all off, Louis came onto Twitter to express his surprise! Amongst many statements, he said, “Wow...You lot are fucking unreal”, and when told that he was at #1 in the US, he said “How!!!???? You guys are fucking mental”. He expressed similar excitement and disbelief when he was told that he was also topping iTunes charts in Brazil, India, Mexico, and the UK, though he mentioned that “it’s not about individual places. The overall support blows my fucking mind”. He did reply to HLDaily when a fan tagged them - Louis said that the whole thing was “mad”. Louis also announced that he’s been working on LT2 (!!!!!!!) - he’s written four songs in four days and is cooking “banger after banger”.  He said he will “probably” have a new single for us by 2021 - I was literally sobbing when I read this you have NO IDEA!!  Louis also admitted to “obviously” (lol) “stealing funny screenshots from fans” and to having gotten into basketball in the last few years. He says he will have more “social” causes (but not political ones) in his songs in future, and he recommended some music (BIG MOOD). To cap it all off, he said that we “really are” unstoppable and that we “really don’t fuck around, do we?” Ummm, NO! WE DON’T. My favorite tweet, though, was: “You’re all fucking amazing. Put me in such a good mood”.  Congrats, Louis, and I hope we see more golden days like this one very soon in the future!
There was much speculation about what was driving this growth and whether his new label could be involved, because it seemed far fetched that a fan push could be so profound, but a look at iTunes numbers is useful for context. They don't allow access to their album unit sales, but you can find some info on single songs sales, so, to give some numbers: the song in the 200th spot in iTunes sale is Falling by Harry, and it’s sold 137 units in the last 24 hours. At 115, it’s Helen Reddy with 199 units sold - not a huge jump in units to influence the charts. But, when we get up to the top ten, number 6 is Justin Beiber, with 1444 units in the last 24 hours. In the number one for songs, you have Demi Lovato, who has sold 4803 tunes in the last 24 hours. If the album sales numbers are even mildly proportional (they are presumably smaller), it's clearly plausible as a fan effort that managed to hit just right and snowball. Arista, Louis' US label, posted in happy celebration but sure didn't take any credit, and whoever Louis' new mysterious UK label are they didn't spill the beans by weighing in but I'm sure they're patting themselves on the backs for their signing! A relatively small step in terms of sales numbers but a huge leap for fankind indeed.
And that’s not all - the sun himself peeked out from behind a cloud sometime last night in a pub in Oxfordshire. Louis was wearing a black hoodie (shocker) and a red baseball cap; the fan said he had a mask, but asked if she would prefer to take a picture with a mask on. She said no, and the picture features him, the fan, her friend, and her dog, who Louis called “a good little lad” (awwwww the way I ADORE him). They took a (not socially distanced) picture, and let me tell you THOSE EYES!!!! Ugh, I could also get lost inside of them. It was lovely to see him, at any rate, and I have a feeling we’ll be seeing a bit more of him in the coming months.
And while we’re speaking of Golden (have you noticed a theme today, guys?) Golden was activated for radio play yesterday afternoon! This after all of those music video pictures we were getting really does seem to indicate a quick turnaround on the promo for this song, but first things first: we’re keeping an eye on the DYKWYA website to see when IT becomes golden-themed! Harry also finalized his Grammy submissions - they are: “Fine Line” as Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album, “Adore You” as Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best Music Video (my Fish Video <3 <3), and “Watermelon Sugar” as Best Pop Solo Performance. Honestly, could this day GET ANY BETTER?????
As it seems to be a business heavy day, we’ve got to mention that Zayn continues to be a presence on Instagram, promoting Better for Asian and Brazilian audiences, as well as a UK Spotify playlist that has added the song. Niall also continues to prove that he’s Very Much On Social Media by popping up in Julia Michael’s livestream and saying he needs to “go listen to the new song” and asking her to “do a dance.” She did, but oh for the days when we could see those two goofs doing dances together!

When the Present is the Past: Carina Round Talks the World of Puscifer and Existential Reckoning
https://ift.tt/3jAAI8w
As the colossal disaster that is 2020 starts to wind down, frantic members of the public gather in socially distanced huddled masses, lined up to place their vote in the U.S. election as they stand under shadowy fears of doubt and uncertainty. Yet, these final months of this confusing time have a steady pipeline of great new music to help quell those worries and take our minds to a more peaceful plane of existence.
One of these treasures about to hit the market is the new album from the musical collective started by Tool’s Maynard James Keenan; Puscifer. Though originally devised more as a solo project for Keenan with a rotating cast of musicians to help pave the way, in recent years, Puscifer has become more of a trio powerhouse at its core, with Mat Mitchell and Carina Round solidifying the line-up of talented songwriters.
With the release of the new record, Existential Reckoning, on Oct. 30 and a livestream of a special performance of the album from famed prototype city of Arcosanti in Arizona; we spoke with Carina Round about releasing music in this strange time and what her time with Puscifer has meant to her musical journey.
Beyond the lyrical content, would you consider Existential Reckoning a concept album?
Not really, I think it doesn’t really start out like that… it’s just stemming from the sonic bed that Mat [Mitchell] put down at the very beginning. All the ideas and the characters and the stories are kind of inspired by that. So, it’s less of a concept album and more just an album that develops naturally based on the seeds that were planted early on.
People are already talking about and will continue to talk about how timely this record is, but unless you’re rushing to make something like Borat 2 in a few months, all of this starts years in advance. With that being the case, has the album taken on a new meaning for you, now that it is coming out in our current climate?
Yeah, I think one thing that Maynard does–and without talking about the lyrics too much because he never talks about it so it would be remiss for me to do that but–I think he has a way of writing these lyrics and making the stories without laying it all out too clearly. He leaves enough room for the listener to to add their own point of view and make their own story.

Borat 2: Rudy Giuliani ‘Tucking Shirt’ Excuse is Irrelevant
By David Crow
But while the music has been written for like five years before; whatever he manages synthesizing is just, taking it from the world around to him, I guess. So when it came out.. this is what it came out, into.
You know, there’s no escaping this stuff. It’s in your everyday life especially if you own a smartphone and you ever want to do anything on it, there’s just no way of actually getting something done without being assaulted by the political world right now or, just the polarization of social media and…I don’t even want to get into it. But yeah, I think it’s hard to escape.
I mean that’s the thing though, even though the world is more polarized than ever before and it is becoming more outrageous; these are the kind of things we’ve been dealing with all the time, just on a new level.
It’s funny, I just watched The Candidate with Robert Redford like two weeks ago, and it was just, kind of the same thing. I was amazed. It just makes me realize that it’s always been the same. It’s just that right now we have a magnifying glass, with the sun coming through the glass and burning us up, because we’re all a little tiny ants…just wondering what the story is.
So, jumping back into the music…obviously anything you write is yours. But does the music carry a different weight for you when you first joined Puscifer to make music–for lack of a better term–as a hired gun, compared to now, where Puscifer has become more of the trio of you, Mat, and Maynard?
Personally for me, it does. I mean my first audition– if you want to call it that–was a humbling river. I was basically just stuck in a room with Mat, while Maynard was doing something with the winery, he was in some weird mood…and it was just basically saying, “Here, do something with what you hear in this.” So it was very clear from the beginning that my sensibility was what I was there for. I wasn’t just being–I’m not just a voice that they can tell to sing something because my voice sounds different to theirs.

None of This Would Be Happening If Frank Zappa Had Been President
By Tony Sokol
It was, “Oh, you’re here because of what you do. You’re here because of the sounds you create and the ideas that you have and the things that you do.” So that was, that was clear from the beginning that nobody was really trying to control my, my input.
But as the years passed, I think my place within the sphere became more apparent, and I think that my confidence within the sphere built-up, and it just magically emerged into this…alchemy, really. So it does feel different that I was involved a lot earlier on with this record and had a lot more to do with how the songs were formed in terms of my stuff being on there earlier, and decisions being based on the stuff that I had done. It feels different, but it’s not a million miles away.
Do you find that your solo work has been influenced by what you do with Puscifer, or vice/versa?
I think I am. Before I started to work with Puscifer, I found it a more torturous experience for me to write solo. I’m distilling it down a bit for the sake of an interview…but I used to think of it like that old cliche of, “the artist is tortured,” and you wait for the inspiration to hit. It didn’t always feel like a fun, joyous experience making music, even though I do experience extreme joy and relief when I am writing, myself.
But with these people, it’s like you fucking show up, and you work, and that part of the process…being present is what brings your sub-conscious to the forefront, lets you access that area of your brain. Which in turn, lets your creativity flow. Then you get into that mindspace which in a sense feels like you’re disappearing; which is realistically, where I think all creators want to be when they’re in the middle of creating something. It’s taught me a lot. I think it does inform my own creative process, for sure.
Do you find that you’re also contributing elsewhere in the projects? Earlier you spoke about Mat laying down ideas and characters. Do you have input there, or in regards to what the live experience with who these characters are and how they’re presented?
I don’t really have input in the overall live show. I give my ideas, but the crux of it is created by Mat and Maynard’s ideas, and Mat putting it into practice and making it happen. Technically, he’s a genius. For the most part, my ideas are just entertained [laughter] and if something sticks, it sticks.
With the livestream coming up of your performance at Arcosanti; should fans expect something even more outrageous than what they’ve become accustomed to from the live Puscifer experience?
Yeah, I think so. I think what most Puscifer fans have learned over the years is to expect the unexpected…and then don’t expect that, either.
The reason we chose Arcosanti was because it’s a mysterious and interesting place. It’s out in the middle of the hostile, Arizona desert. It feels like these concrete buildings just mushroomed up in the middle of the desert, and it’s beautiful. It feels a bit like you woke up on Mars or something. You’re in a sci-fi movie and instead of doing the show in a venue, or a theater, or some kind of sterile environment; we chose to do it in a place that would add another dimension to the already multi-dimensional, and mysterious music.
Then on top of that, we have the set. The set-up that Mat came up with and the team we have doing all this stuff, are just brilliant. So yeah, it is going to be special.
It must have also been nice to be able to perform in some capacity.
It’s great to sing and perform music, but there’s no audience as it was right in the middle of the pandemic…as we still are, of course. It was a very different environment to playing live, but it did give you a taste of what it is going to be like to play live again. It did make me nostalgic for that.
Well, for when you do have shows again, I think you guys should add in a cover of Peter Gabriel’s, “No Self Control.” It fits in perfectly with this album.
I love that song. Kate Bush actually sings backing vocals on that.
…oh yes, and when she comes in, it’s so ridiculously amazing.
That kind of backing vocal, that kind of…turn of phrase…that audible turn of phrase for a song like that; that’s what I’m aiming for, shit like that.
I was listening to the album earlier and The Underwhelming was on, and it’s not like they sound exactly alike, but it reminded me of it, and I immediately had to put on No Self Control right after.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
Peter Gabriel had heavy use of the Fairlight CMI and the Synclavier throughout the making of those records, and that’s the instrument that Mat fell in love with and bought for the making of this record. Sonically, there is some similarity.

Bikini Kill, Sufjan, Nas & more live videos to watch in isolation
The Darkness
Basically no shows are happening due to the coronavirus outbreak (though some artists are doing livestreams instead), but if you’re already jonesing to see a show, or just need a brief distraction from the insanity of the world right now, thankfully there’s YouTube which has an amazing array of live footage from throughout the history of pop music, from clips from concert films, TV performances and other pro-shot footage, to tons of fan-shot video from shows. If you’re looking for a place to start, we’ve been picking some of our favorites. Here are five more:
Bikini Kill @ Yale’s Morse Dining Hall – 3/3/96
Bikini Kill are finally reunited and great as ever (but unfortunately also one of the many bands who had to postpone a tour), and as great as it is to see them play anywhere, watching them on a huge stage doesn’t have the same charm as the up-close-and-personal shows they did in the ’90s, like this one at Yale. It’s a grainy video shot in a modest, intimate environment (no real stage, no light show, probably no sound system worth bragging about), but it still comes across how much of a forceful, impassioned live band Bikini Kill were. This video also gets extra points for the very funny moment when Kathleen Hanna asks the person filming the show why they’re recording it. If only she knew how legendary this video would be one day. Sufjan Stevens @ Sasquatch, 8/6/2016
Sufjan Stevens toured Age of Adz in 2010 and 2011 with a series of vividly neon-hued, electro-frenzied, life-affirming shows. I couldn’t find any full sets from that era online, but happily Sufjan revisited that aesthetic for a run of 2016 festival dates after the release of Carrie & Lowell, including this Sasquatch set. Somehow he manages to incorporate Carrie & Lowell‘s melancholy material into the overall joyous set with ease, along with “dad jazz” keyboard shredding and an epic rendition of “Impossible Soul.” [Amanda Hatfield]

The Soundtrack of Our Lives on Rockpalast, 2012
Sweden’s Soundtrack of Our Lives were master thieves, knicking the best bits of The Who, Rolling Stones, The Stooges, Love and anything else that fit into their psychedelic rock n’ roll worldview. That went for their live show, too, where they used every rock move trick in the book, and played every show like it was a massive festival. TSOOL used it all like they invented it, which made them such a consistently enjoyable group and an absolute powerhouse live band. They were the kind of group where you could just watch one member of the band for a whole show and never get bored. This show was taped for amazing, long-running German live music series Rockpalast in 2012 — they would call it quits a year later — and is packed with many of their best loved songs, including “Sister Surround,” “Mantra Slider,” “Firmament Vacation,” and “Bigtime.” [Bill Pearis]

The Darkness @ London Astoria, November 2003
The Darkness’ debut album, Permission to Land, is a perfect record, every song is a hit, packed with RAWK riffs, super-melodic solos (most of which are announced), and no opportunity for a double entendre missed. The rest of their output has been hit or miss but in 2003 they could do no wrong, especially live where their stadium rock showmanship was equal parts tongue-in-cheek knowingness and genuine affection for all the posturing, catsuits and ridiculous rock moves. (Does frontman Justin Hawkins ride through the crowd on a roadie’s shoulders whilst soloing? You know it.) This show at the London Astoria in November of 2003 was filmed for British TV and the crowd clearly knows every word. [Bill Pearis]

Nas @ The Fever – 1994
Veteran DJ Tony Touch was behind the boards when Nas came to Bronx club The Fever just as Illmatic came out, and Tony uploaded this vintage footage to his YouTube page a few years back. Illmatic is, of course, one of the greatest rap studio albums ever made, but live footage of Nas from this period remains as sought after as his album. Right off the bat, it was clear how good of a rapper Nas was, and that really comes across when he’s on stage getting a crowd going nuts off the strength of his bars alone. Also in this video: AZ comes out for his verse on “Life’s A Bitch.” [Andrew Sacher]

What's your opinion on this robot harry? For me it's so annoying he can't even pretend to be excited for his own tour, his social media presence is such a turn off
Well I’m sort of digging myself a grave with this one, but since I haven’t seen a post I can fully agree with, here we go. Disclaimer, I actually study this at uni. I was the Social Media Manager for the planning and putting together of a fashion show, on all platforms. I just handed in last month a 6-months marketing plan that was based around social media promo. So I do have a bit of knowledge in this area. I am by no means an expert, but this is my future field of choice, so I like to think I’m at least educated.
The situation isn’t as black and white as people have put it so far. All I’ve seen is “he’s horrible at engaging with fans” and “he doesn’t own you shit so stop complaining”. The answer is a very big grey area in which Harry’s actual social media presence fits perfectly in my opinion. First of all, there’s two main templates we studied for marketing purposes this year, Gaynor Lea Greenwood’s promotion suggestions (2009) and Burcher (2013)’s Paid, Owned and Earned media concept. Long story short, the first one is your traditional marketing campaign and the second one relies more on social media and advertising on it. Now, I think Harry’s team went for the more traditional approach, and let me explain why.
Harry started distancing himself more and more from twitter and Instagram ever since the hiatus started.Even before, during OTRA and MITAM promo, most of his tweets were promo stuff, lyrics I’m not sure we fully understand even now, charity work, promoting friends or tweeting about holidays/important days or events. His fan interaction has been low for quite a while, and I’m honestly baffled people are acting like this is news. Looking through his Twitter in 2015, there are some tweets to fans, yes, but they’re very sparse.I counted about 12 in 5 months, most of them in September, when Perfect came out, and around the release of MITAM.His tweets were mostly thanks to fans for various awards and nominalisation, promoting the songs/album, some lyrics and, without fail, after every concert he tweeted a thank you for coming.
It felt more personal than what we have now (tho in all honesty, his tour hasn’t started yet and if we eliminate the OTRA tweets it’s already a different story), but Robot Harry has been a thing then, and people were riding along with it instead of condemning it to the extent they do now. But, the thing is, Harry didn’t have the entire burden of engaging with the fanbase like he has now.Louis, Niall and Liam always took turns in taking the lead in replying to fans and interacting with them, which allowed Harry to do his part and everyone was mostly happy.
And yet, I personally don’t feel this frustration many people feel. I think it’s quite interesting actually. A bold move that wouldn’t work for other artist whose career relies on people who live and breathe social media (maybe Beyonce or Adele, but they are in another league). I was very intrigued by Harry’s statement in the Behind the album video, in which he said that there was a time in his life when people knew everything about him, and he didn’t like it.He has been overexposed since 2012, his personal life splashed across tabloids, fake relationship or not.And now he disappeared for a year (and has been retreating into himself for at least 2) and he wrote this mysterious™ album, trying to see if people can listen and understand it without knowing much about the current him. In this context, having an album that surrounds itself in mystery and then doing 4 Q&As on twitter and 3 livestreams sends…extremely contradictory messages. I can, and will fault his team for presenting a dual image of Harry that sometimes makes 0 sense, for handling a lot of things so poorly, and for the entire Carolina mess, but I will say that his social media fits this old school mysterious rockstar image they’re showing of him. I also think his actual reason is very personal and very real, and I respect the fact that he didn’t compromise this choice he made for promo purposes.
His promo relied on more traditional channels. TV and radio appearances, print magazines, and most importantly, the secret gigs. Now, I’m sorry, but I felt entirely more connected to Harry running across London at 8AM in my pyjamas than by any twitter spree he’ll ever do. I never did this before. This reminded me of the stories my dad told me, of queuing up for days in front of the box office so he’d get the tickets when they went on sale. It was very old school and it worked for me. It was a phenomenal experience, something I will never forget. And he did this for us. All profits went to charity, he didn’t do this for money. And while I know this was for a few selected cities and a handful of lucky fans, it was intimate and it was special and I think everyone, regardless if they were there, or vicariously living through pics and videos, felt a connection to Harry. We got emotional on his behalf when he sang with his idol on stage 2 weeks later, you don’t do that for someone you have no connection to.
Now, the actual reason I’m happy with what we’ve got is that it is genuine from my POV. Liam is the perfect candidate for a comparison, since he also took a bit of a break from social media (not as heavy as Harry’s, but he definitely wasn’t as active as Louis or Niall) and his promo is as textbook as it gets. He slowly, but surely increased his activity since January, a few more tweets, a few more pics on Instagram.A big turning point was April when he posted 13 pics on Instagram, compared to 8 in March, 4 in February and 3 in January. His Twitter went through a similar process. Now, the moment he started posting more, I knew his music was gonna be out soon. It’s pure marketing. You start your campaign weeks before the actual launch, it’s only natural. Unless you want to drop it as a surprise, but that’s another discussion. Actually Harry did it too, with the TV ad, but that was ruined by the info getting leaked beforehand and everyone getting pissed off by that so whatevs. Now, Liam is going for the approachable celeb route. Streams, Instagram stories, snapchat, tweeting fans, loads of pics, videos with popular Youtubers. It’s nice and about as well handled as it gets (apart from that weird video release earlier than it should have been and Liam just generally being a bit…odd?off?idk how to explain it, but a lot of people feel the same way from what I’ve seen). It fits with the image Liam is going for, it aims at the right target audience. He’s not trying to enter a new market like Harry is. He’s consolidating his place in the current market from what I’ve seen (and I’ll admit I haven’t followed his promo as closely as Harry’s). Trying to imagine Harry doing this sort of promo doesn’t really work for me.
Niall has been present on and off social media ever since he came back from his trip last year. Literally, if I pull up the calendars people have been making each month, he doesn’t get more than a handful of days without doing something, so it’s unfair to compare him to the others, since he’s always around and posting and doing stuff.
Louis deserves a better team and I won’t have anyone uttering anything else in my presence, and yet somehow, despite Niall’s constant presence and Liam’s textbook engagement, I’ll never feel as connected to them as I feel to Louis. Louis’ tweets are the perfect mixture of absolutely adorable fan service (“our year” 😭😭) and some of the things he’s passionate about (tv shows, fashion, footie/sports). His promo for JHO was….I have no words for it and I’m gonna have a rage fit if I start thinking about it, but his overall persona is charming and endearing when he’s posting things himself. He created a real communication channel between us and him and he knows how to use it when he needs to send a message (warning selfies anyone?Only you?). There’s an actual analysis of Instagram stats that shows he’s the number 1 male account in engagement and overall likes and that doesn’t surprise me one bit. Louis is a smart businessman, he has a loyal fanbase who is here for him through thick and thin.
And on top of everything I said so far, none of them owe us anything outside the promo bubble. Apart from shoots, songs/albums/tours info and official announcements, they do not owe us anything. If they chose to share a picture from their home, that’s their personal space, and while it’s good for PR, amazingly good in a society that thrives from the feeling of knowing everything about everyone (like what’s your fave’s breakfast and how’s their cat is doing), it’s still a part they can choose to keep private and no one should be entitled to ask for more.
Have you seen Adele’s Instagram? It gives you this illusion of closeness to her, with make up free selfies, funny poses and landscape shots. Too bad literally everything is from touring and other official appearances right? There’s one picture of her home, and that’s to celebrate the end of the tour. Harry sort of did the same with the booklet pictures. He allowed you into his personal space in a controlled manner, just like Adele did. Only he did it in a different way. His promo is just different and you have to think a bit outside the box to see that he actually did a lot of things other artists do. Just a bit differently. Was it perfect?Fuck, no. Was it as bad as many people make it look like?Personally, I don’t think so. It was just different and people are entirely justified to see it as a good or a bad thing. I see it mostly as a good thing. Mostly.

Hanbin Scenario: Supportive Girlfriend
This was inspired by all the streaming I’ve been doing for their Bling Bling and B-Day MVs! This was long overdue but my laptop deleted everything and I only recently got the motivation to rewrite everything and get over that trauma. ANYWAYS, Enjoy! And sorry for any mistakes!!
Tumblr media
It hadn’t been long since iKON finally dropped their 2 new MVs for their long-awaited comeback, and introduced and talked about them on their livestream on vlive. You watched the screen on your computer as it notified you that their comeback vlive had just ended, and you exited out of the screen.
You were so happy for your boyfriend, Hanbin, and his teammates for finally returning to the Korean setting and being able to show everyone what they had been working so hard on. You were also very pleased to finally hear the songs that Hanbin had been seriously composing in his studio while you patiently waited for him to give you a little attention when he could spare a some time.
You remembered the days when you would beg him for a little sneak peak of the new songs that he was working on. But every time he would tell you that it wouldn’t be fair to their other fans if he let you have a little listen, since you were a fan yourself. At times he would say it was a surprise because he felt confident that they were really good songs and way better than the ones from their previous album.
There were times though when he was very close to allowing you to listen to a little spoiler when you would do your best aegyo or even make a deal with him, like giving him a full massage or several other things that you suggested in exchange to persuade him. Or maybe tempted was a better word.
But in the end, he never gave in to your temptations and stuck to his strict rule, evidently struggling to pull himself away and refuse. It was too bad for him because he was missing out on all the good things that you offered. Well, not as bad as you had it because you were dying to know how they sounded like for what felt like 15384 years.
But alas, the day had finally come! And you were so ecstatic at the moment that you immediately went into your secret fan accounts that Hanbin didn’t know of and read up on all the updates about iKON, and activities that iKONICs were doing as a fandom.
You read one post that said that they will be doing a mass streaming event for both of their MVs to raise their views, and you were quick to switching tabs and opening up Youtube to join in on the fun.
After you set up multiple windows on your computer screen and played the music videos on each one, you searched around your room like a huntress for other devices that you could stream on as well.
You grabbed your iPad sitting on your bedside table, your laptop from your drawer, your old phone tucked away at the back of your cabinet, and finally your phone that was laying on your bed, then set them all up on your desk and streamed on them as well.
While the videos played, you took the chance to run to the kitchen (literally) to quickly grab anything and everything that could count as your dinner and midnight snacks because you were going to be up all night making your boyfriend and his brothers proud.
Swiftly making the gears in your head function, you thought about what else you needed to be comfortable. Pulling your blanket off of your bed, you wrapped it around you and settled in your chair.
You scoped your bedroom for anything else, and your eyes caught sight of your konbat sitting on top of your shelf, and you paused and thought to yourself, ‘well, why not?’ So you grabbed it and sang along to Bling bling that was currently playing on your phone.
But then, your phone suddenly started ringing, stopping the music in its tracks. The caller ID read Hanbin♥, and you fumbled to immediately take the call.
Hanbin was about to say hello but you unintentionally cut him off due to your excitement. “Hanbin-ah!” You gleefully called out to him into the phone.
He chuckled from the other end and said, “Hey, did you hear our songs already?”
“Of course! I’m listening to them right now. They’re so good! Really! You’re such a genius. I could listen to them all day.” Your words came out rushed and filled with enthusiasm that you could scream right now.
He laughed out loud then continued, “Did you watch our vlive?”
“Of course! I wouldn’t have missed it for the world. Do you know how long I’ve waited for your comeback?”
Hanbin was saying something in response but you lost focus when you noticed all the videos were ending all at once, and you tried to quickly restart them because time was of the essence!
You interrupted Hanbin and said, “Sorry, Hanbin-ah! I have to go. I’m really busy right now so I’ll talk to you soon!” Then you hung up and put your hands to work without delay.
Time flew by so fast that you didn’t realize that it had already turned midnight. You were concentrating so hard on keeping the videos going on all of your devices to increase the views as much as you can.
Because you were so immersed in singing and dancing along to Bling Bling in your seat with your konbat in one hand, you didn’t notice that your front door to your apartment opened and that Hanbin was here, until his voice suddenly interrupted through your room.
“What are you doing right now?”
Every muscle in your body froze, your hand holding your konbat suspended in the air and your body hunched forward as you stared into the computer screen with wide eyes.
You slowly turned your head around and saw Hanbin standing in the doorway of your bedroom, one hand still gripping the doorknob and his mouth slightly ajar. You hesitantly looked him in his eyes guiltily as your hand slowly lowered, and found the evident shock in his features from the sight of his own girlfriend avidly fangirling over him and his group members.
You couldn’t even imagine how shocking you looked to him right now. You were wrapped in your fluffy blanket, wearing your penguin pajamas with your hair pulled up messily at the top of your head and your konbat in one hand, with all your devices surrounding you, streaming Bling Bling and B-Day. Not to mention a combination of food, drinks and trash were messily scattered on your desk.
You timidly smiled at him and nervously and quietly said, “Hanbin, you’re here?”
He stood there without any sort of movement, staring at you with wide eyes for a solid 10 seconds while you felt the color in your face drain with every second, before he spoke again, “Y/n, what are you doing?”
You quickly stood up from your seat, letting your blanket fall into the floor and quickly explained, “I was just streaming your music videos repeatedly to increase the views. All of this,” you motioned to your devices, “I’m streaming on them too to make it times 2! And just now—” you lifted your konbat and glanced at it then quietly continued,“—I was just excited because they finally came out and it’s super good and it’s just so exciting. I just couldn’t help myself from dancing and singing along to it…” You trailed off as you hesitantly took a peak at your boyfriend.
His expression didn’t change but slowly, he asked you, “Over the phone when you said you were busy, was it because you were doing this?” He gestured to your mess behind you.
Immediately, you jutted out your bottom lip into a small pout as shut your eyes tightly and clasped your hands together. “I’m sorry, Hanbin-ah! I’m sorry for hanging up on you, but I had to help out to raise the views of your MVs. It’s to repay you guys for all your hard work! This was the least that we could do for you...”
You nervously stared at him and nervously bit your lip as you waited for any kind of response to replace this blank stare looking into your guilty soul.
Suddenly, Hanbin burst out laughing, leaving you frozen in your spot in shock. He couldn’t stop laughing and he was already kneeling on the ground with his hand clenching his stomach.
“Hanbin…” You called out to him worriedly, hesitantly reaching out to him but finding yourself unable to. Had your boyfriend finally gone crazy? Did you finally trigger the switch?
He waved his hand in the air as if saying that it was nothing, and his laughter finally died down. He stood back up while wiping the tears that had formed in his eyes.
“Are you okay?” You asked him carefully, fidgeting in place.
He nodded, a helpless smile left on his lips and eyes full of affection as he raked his fingers through his hair in defeat.
“You are really…” He started but finished with a sigh. He closed the distance between you in a flash then pulled you into him abruptly for a hug, leaving you frozen in surprise.
His arm that was circled over your shoulders moved down to wrap around your waist and pull you tighter against his chest. He buried his face into the crook of your neck and inhaled slowly.
Your body finally relaxed in his familiar embrace and scent, and your arms went around him to hug him back.
He sighed in content then murmured into your neck, sending tingles down your spine, “I love you.”
You couldn’t help but smile. Tears stung your eyes from the fullness you felt in your heart just from that one line and gesture. People didn’t just fall in love once, because right now you were sure you fell in love with Hanbin all over again just from that one line and gesture.
He pulled away just a little bit to look into your eyes, his arms never leaving you. “What did I do to ever deserve you?” He looked at you in wonder and with so much affection that it hurt your heart. In a good way.
“Funny you ask that,” You responded as you leaned your forehead against his. “I was wondering the same thing about you.”
You both giggled then continued to stare into each other’s eyes.
He broke the comfortable silence playfully, “I know you have a fully packed schedule right now, but can you possibly make time for me right now?” You giggled at that then he added more solemnly, “I’ve missed you so much, and I’ll be busy again after this.” The smile on his face faded and you felt his fingers squeeze your waist ever so lightly.
You cupped his cheek then replied, “Of course.” Then you smiled up at him. “Always.” You wrapped your arms around him again and pulled him closer.

14. EVERYTHING HAS CHANGED (ft. Ed Sheeran)
“Everything Has Changed” is a song about realizing your life has flipped upside down after falling for someone new. The track appears on Taylor’s fourth album, Red, and features vocals from her close friend Ed Sheeran.
The music video for the song follows a day in the life of two young children in the same elementary school class. They are both misfits and become good friends, but their platonic feelings turn to something more. At the end of the video, it is revealed that the girl is Taylor’s daughter and the boy is Ed’s son.
Moving futher into the song, Ed Sheeran explained to Zane Lowe how he and Taylor had a bit of a dispute over the first pre-chorus: “She pretty much had the verse, bridge and chorus done but we argued about that one chord. She didn’t like that but I forced it upon her. It was quite a funny situation though, ‘cause her place, it’s like surrounded by Grammys—she’s got like seven or eight, and like Billboard awards and Songwriting Guild and stuff like that, and I’m like, 'this chord, huh?’”: “ I just wanna know you better Know you better, know you better now I just wanna know you better Know you better, know you better now I just wanna know you better Know you better, know you better now I just wanna know you, know you, know you”
The second verse, which Ed and Taylor sing together says: “ And all my walls stood tall, painted blue And I'll take 'em down, take 'em down And open up the door for you” Putting up “walls” between yourself and other people symbolically represents creating distance in order to protect yourself, in this case from previous relationships. Although Sheeran has his blue walls up (a color typically used to describe sadness), he sees something in this specific girl. He’s willing to let her come into his life – aka take down his walls/open the door to his heart.
A fun fact about this song is that Taylor had written it before joining Ed and finishing it together. Here there are some differences between the original lyrics and the lyrics written for the record: “All I’ve seen since 18 hours ago” / “And all I’ve seen is everything you are” Some other lyrics are: “ And all I feel in my stomach is butterflies The beautiful kind, making up for lost time Taking flight, making me feel right” Swift’s handwritten lyrics reveal that this section was originally: “All I feel in my stomach is butterflies/The beautiful kind, falling for a Gemini/This feels right, making me feel like.” Another draft went: “All I feel in my stomach is butterflies For a Gemini who’d never tell a lie The beautiful kind, saying ‘this feels right’.” Also, the bridge was originally written: “When you caught my eye The look said you’d missed me all this time Meet me there tonight So I can know it’s not all in my mind”
What have Ed and Taylor said about the song?
After writing this duet with British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran, Swift recalled to MTV News: “We, for real, were sitting on my trampoline in my backyard cause we had been writing a song and I was like, ‘Hey, I just got a trampoline. You want to see it?’ And so, he brought the guitar for some reason. We ended up writing an entire song out there. For portions of the song, we were bouncing around, ‘cause it’s a trampoline and it’s fun, and the combined maturity level of both of us is 8 years.”
Sheeran told MTV News their partnership worked since they have a lot in common: “Well, I don’t really write so much with other artists. Like the Taylor session, when we got together and wrote was the second time I’ve ever gotten with another singer/songwriter and written a song with them. So it wasn’t actually too hard of an adjustment. We’re very much alike musically and it worked out well, I think.”

Ed Sheeran is one of several songwriters that Swift reached out to write with her on Red, her fourth studio album. She told Billboard magazine that the people she chose to collaborate with were ones who inspired her: “You look at someone like Ed Sheeran. He comes from such a sincere place as a writer, and his songs move you in every direction emotionally. That’s something I was so inspired by I ended up calling him.”
Regarding the song’s meaning, Taylor told Digital Spy: “It’s about falling in love. It’s about meeting someone and all of a sudden your entire perspective on the world changes – you’re thinking for two, instead of one.”

Asked by The Sun how Sheeran and her originally met up, Swift replied: “We had both reached out to each other’s camps at the same time. I showed up at his hotel in Arizona and we just wrote songs all day. Then he came and hung out at my house in LA and we spent all night sitting on the kitchen floor laughing, writing songs and harmonizing.”
According to Sheeran, it was Swift who did most of the work when they penned this tune: “She pretty much came with the song and was like, ‘Which bits would you change?’“ I was like, ‘Oh, I don’t know.'”

How did this collaboration come about?
Taylor said during an August 2012 livestream: ”When I was touring in Australia I saw his [“Lego House”] music video on TV, and I was just blown away. […] I got back to the states and I heard from someone that he wanted to work with me and we ended up getting together and writing together, and we wrote a song while sitting on a trampoline that was so much fun and we loved it so much that we actually ended up recording it as a duet. So, it is going to be on the album and I’m so excited because I’m such a huge fan of his.”
Favorite lyrics: “And all I feel in my stomach is butterflies/The beautiful kind, making up for lost time/Taking flight, making me feel right”
Album: Red released on October 22, 2012.
Witten by: Taylor Swift & Ed Sheeran.
Hidden message: Hyannis Port.
