Itâs hard to actually pinpoint the exact moment you fell for Bucky, it always has been. Maybe it was when you met. Steve had invited you and Wanda out to one of their highschool football games because he knew Tony would tag along, and you were almost certain he would ask if he was coming. That night he simply ignored anything anyone besides Tony said, leaving yourself, Bucky, Sam, and Wanda to chat. Bucky's whole aura made you giddy, he kept you on your toes and laughing. His blue eyes reminding you of an ocean, that you wouldnât mind drowning in. Or maybe it was when he saw you walking home in the pouring rain and offered you a ride in his mom's minivan.
Sure, you tell people forever. But thatâs only because youâre a bit prone to dramatics. James Buchanan Barnes had your heart, and always would. No matter how many people you dated, youâd always be his. And you realized that, lying awake at five am, the sunrise peeking in through the windows, and showing how much dust you really had in the small room.
âSteve I told you, itâs fine. Iâm not mad. A little annoyed, but not mad. I just wish you would have told me.â You sighed, taking the cup of coffee his outstretched arm was holding. âBesides I am so over him. And I have more important shit to focus on than thinking about old flames.â
âWhat like school? Psh that shit is boring.â
âWow I must be in another world, first Bucky comes back, and now Steve Rogers is saying âshitâ? I should just head down to the psych unit in the medical department.â You tease, bringing the cup up to your lips.
âPlease, (y/n/n) you work on that floor anyways.â
âHey! Itâs not by choice you idiot, my professor wants us to switch things up every few weeks. But thankfully I start my internship soon.â
âWith professor Coulson?â
âYeah.â You hum and walk over to the couch, that has a plethora of pillows tossed about. âStarting on the pediatric floor I think.â You mumble into the cup of coffee as you slowly lift it up to your lips for another ling sip.
Steve sits across from you on the old black recliner heâs had since you could remember. He loved that squeaky old thing. Even if everytime he actually reclined in it, itâd send him flying violently backwards.
âThatâll be cool, youâve always been good with kids.â
âOnly because of Becca, I called her earlier and told her about it, and she reminded me of when Bucky, you and I had to take care of her. Man that whole weekend was a mess.â
âYeah we had to beg his parents not to leave us alone for the weekend ever again.â He laughed, crossing an arm over his chest like he was on SNL. You rolled your eyes and finished the rest of the coffee.
âOh whatever, anyways thanks for letting me come over at ungodly hours.â You grinned, kicking your legs up on the rest of the couch and craning your head to the side to look at him. Steve nodded and placed his cup on the table.
âIâm always here to talk, you know that (Y/N).â
âDonât get all sappy on me now.â You groaned, grabbing a pillow from beside you and tossed it at him. He caught it without a glance and turned on the TV. âShowoffâŚâ You muttered, crossing your arms over your chest and turning to face the now illuminated screen, as a rerun of Law and Order started playing.
You and Steve lounged around for a good hour and a half, now being around seven. He got up to make breakfast for everyone while you clicked through the guide.
âYou guys have shitty TV, this is all football.â You moaned, dramatically flopping against the back of the couch. âDonât you guys ever watch anything interesting? Like The Simpsons, or Criminal Minds? At least one of you has to be a sucker for crime documentaries.â
âThat would be me.â Sam announced his arrival as he walked out from the hallway and to the front door as a rapid knocking was heard. He pulled open the door and Tony came rushing in, hair disheveled and eyes wide.
âI thought you died!â He yelled, waving his arms around wildly in your direction.
âWe told you she wasnât dead.â Nat said with a groan as she walked in behind him, dragging a half asleep Wanda behind her. âHey hun, he woke us up yelling that you were gone.â
âHe made up,â Wanda yawned, âSo many theoriesâŚâ She groaned and flopped down on the couch, laying her head on your thighs. You chuckled and patted her forehead, continuing to scroll past the plethora of sports channels.
âLike what?â You asked, turning your head slightly to glance at Tony. He was having a hushed chat with Steve and turned his attention back to you, now holding a steaming cup of coffee.
âOh ya know, you an Buckaroo getting back together, you got drunk and left the apartment without even knowing, or Thor had asked you to go over for a quickie.â
âGross!â You hissed, chucking the remote at him. It went sailing past him and landed on the floor with a thud. âWe do not have quickies.â You muttered, crossing your arms over your chest and letting out a huff of air.
âHey does anyone know how Buck takes his coffee?â Steve asked, eyes scanning over the different creamers.
âBlack with two sugars. Unless itâs from Starkbucks, then creamer. Says itâs too bitterâ You said, the words flying out of your mouth before you could even stop them. The kitchen went silent and you faked innocence as Nat raised a brow at you for an explanation. âWhat?!â You yelped and raised your hand in defense. âWe dated for three years, and it's not like itâs that hard to remember.â
âUh-huh just keep telling yourself that you love sick fool.â
âTony shut up I am not.â
âYes you are.â
âNo.â
âYessss.â He said in a sing-song voice as Steve walked over with a plate of pancakes. Wanda sat up from your lap, only to move beside you. Nat sat on the floor next to Sam who kept picking food off her plate, you could have sworn Nat threatened to stab him at least twice. Steve sat in his usual recliner, and Tony sprawled out next to you on the couch.
âJesus what did I miss?â Buckyâs raspy morning voice filled your ears, and you shuddered, a chill running down your spine. You shook it off by reaching for the syrup.
âPancakes and yelling.â Wanda beamed up at him before grabbing the syrup from your hand. âShare.â She muttered, sending you a glare. You stuck your tongue out at her before beginning to dig in to your second pancake.
â(Y/N) never shares her food.â Bucky chuckled and began fixing two plates of food. Shooting him a cold glare, you finally looked at him. His long locks were an absolute mess, per-usual in the mornings, he had black basketball shorts, hanging low on his waist and he was shirtless. You gulped, your eyes not daring to scan his god like body.
But you failed, like usual. And oh you wished you hadnât looked. He still looked as if he was sculpted by the gods, that much was obvious but there we small red and purple marks littering his collarbones. Hickies.
You gulped down the last bite of your food and with a shaky hand, placed the plate on the coffee table.
Sensing your mood change Nat sat up, but still chewed on her blueberry pancakes. Wanda already had a hand pressed up against your lower back, but you brushed her off as you stood up.
âActually James, I do, just not with you.â You muttered, before walking over to your stuff. You pulled Thorâs sweatshirt from the back of your chair and slipped it over your head, then stuffed your phone into your pocket. âNow if youâll excuse me, I have class and Iâd rather not be here when your little⌠plaything wakes up.â With that, you opened the door, stepped out, and slammed it shut. Then you took off down the hall to your own apartment and threw yourself in.
âFuck fuck fuck!â You chanted, tripping over furniture, tears already spilling from your eyes.
You did have class, that much was true. Then you had a study group with some lower-classmen you were helping in biology. So you werenât really lying, even if it was at noon, not eight in the morning. But you had to get out of there, you could barely hold yourself together seeing him alone after a one night stand, but seeing him with the girl? No way in hell you would have kept it together. Not like this.
You wiped the tears off your cheeks, rubbing under your eyes. Red cheeks replaced the pale ones you had moments before, and the bags under your eyes were way more noticeable. Turning on the faucet, you splash your face with cold water and run your fingers through your hair.
âGet it togetherâŚâ You muttered, not even wanting to look at yourself in such a disheveled state.
-
âNo thatâs not right.â Peterâs voice became a distant memory, your head falling limp in your palm as you fought against the sleep that was pulling your eyelids closed.
After the mini reality check from earlier, you managed to take a quick shower, and throw your hair up into a ponytail. You looked presentable at best, but it was better than not showing up at all. You managed to toss on one of Thorâs old sweatshirts you stole, along with a pair of leggings, and some slippers. Because the weather was surprisingly cold for early fall.
âSorry, what?â You blinked as MJ tapped your shoulder.
âPeter wants to know why blood sugar levels are so important.â She mumbled, not even sparing you a glance, her nose dug into a book.
âBecause, Our blood sugar refers to how much glucose is present in the blood. Glucose is important for cells to be able to make energy and build other complex carbohydrates. However, too much glucose can be toxic for the body. So we need to know if it becomes too much, or too little. You should know this.â
âAnd you Miss (Y/N), shouldnât be falling asleep.â Peter teased, sticking his tongue out at you as you shot him a glare.
âListen kid, I didnât sleep last night and I havenât had enough coffee. Stark is dropping me off some.â
âJust get the coffee from the front desk.â
âParker I am going to pretend you didnât just say that. Library coffee is horrible. I need fresh brewed from home, or Dunkin.â
âOh or that nice little place on Manhattan blvd.â Ned added and you nodded, shooting him a warm smile.
âYes, the absolute best.â
âI heard my name.â Tony said with a grin as he placed the steaming cup in front of you.
âIf you mean the absolute worst? Then yes, yes you did.â
âHarsh, I have been wounded. Maybe Iâll just drink this coffee myself.â The brunette mutters, pulling the cup just out of your reach and taking a small sip. You shriek violently and fling your textbook at him. Tony simply steps out of the way before shooting you a sly grin.
You let out an annoyed groan, standing up from the chair and picking up your textbook, and that's when Tony really sees what you're wearing.
He knows this small step back into what you used to be, like dipping your toe into the pool to test the water before diving in.
Under Thorâs blue sweatshirt, is one of Bucky's red henleys. He had plenty, they were his favorite shirt. And heâd be damned if they ever got stolen⌠by anyone other than you of course.
Tony's breath catches in his throat as you yank the sweater back over the fabric to refrain from prying eyes of passerbys, your friends, and most importantly Bucky.
âY/N-â
âPlease donâtâŚâ You choke out, holding back a soft cry. He nods, understanding, but not ready to completely let it all go. He places a gentle hand on your wrist and waits for you to look up at him. Your eyes are slowly turning puffy and red, even more so than they already were. Your free hand is picking at imaginary lint and he lets out a sigh.
âOkay⌠not here.â He confirms and shakes his head at your pleading face, that's begging him to drop the subject completely.
Tony doesnât give in to the puppy dog eyes that make everyone else but him and Natasha melt. He places a short peck to your forehead, hands you your coffee and walks off after saying a quick hello to Peter.
You clear your throat, take a small sip of the now lukewarm liquid and sit back down in the creaky hard chair.
âSorry, where were we?â You ask, looking around the room instead of the freshman in front of you.
âLets get some lunch.â MJ announces, abruptly standing up and shoving her books into her bag, clearly over the study session.
Of course she was done with the study session, anymore talk about isotopes and she might have exploded. But she also noticed how uncomfortable you got when Tony had started whispering to you. She had some inkling as to why. When you were a senior in highschool, she was a freshman. It was uncommon for the two classes to mingle but you and her got along great. Her, Peter, and Ned were tossed into an AP Calculus class, and you of course had gotten stuck with them. But it wasn't all bad, yourself and MJ had often made snarky comments towards the boys, and would mumble obscenities under your breath as the teacher would get things mixed up. MJ was observant, and quite the character, so when you and Bucky had split up, she knew it immediately.
Everyone was truly shocked when you both split. Bucky had left for Europe the day after, and you showed up to school, alone, with puffy eyes. She recalls when you were taking your final the next day you had ran out in the middle of it, tears pooling down your cheeks.
And she resented him a little for it, but then again she didn Ět know what happened, and she didn't know why, and she didn't know Bucky.
But it wasn't like it was rocket science to figure out that he was what had you so shaken up. MJ heard a rumor about him coming back, but refrained from saying anything because⌠a rumor is just that, a stupid rumor. And she didn't want to upset you if she didn't have to.
âI want the extra crispy grilled cheese.â
âYou get that every time Ned.â MJ grumbled as she scanned over the blackboard that held all the options on the menu.
âOkay but itâs really good.â You chimed in grinning at MJ, you pulled out your wallet as everyone ordered and reached out to pay. Peter shrieked and smacked at your hand, shaking his head.
âNo no no my treat, you always help us with studying and we donât even pay you. Let me get this.â
âSuch a gentlemanâŚâ You cooed, giving him a cheeky grin. âBut its work study so I get paid anyways.â Peter simply shrugged you off and handed the cash to the cashier, who grunted in response. You recognized the kid from your Economics class, and attempted to wave but he simply turned away to grab your food.
~
âI still donât see why you didnât want to go out tonight.â Wanda muttered as she handed you a bag of goldfish to snack on.
âBecause I have homework, and I have an econ test to study for. Plus itâs movie night.â
âEcon can suck my dick.â
âWhoâs sucking whose dick?â Sam muttered as he flopped down on the love seat, hanging his feet off the side.
âEcon is sucking Wanda's dick because I didnât want to go out.â
âWell it is movie night Wands, we can't just skip it.â Nat hissed, curling up on the longer couch, settling herself comfortably beside Wanda.
âNot like everyone shows up all the time.â Wanda muttered before leaning forward and cradling the warm cup in her hands. âWhere the hell are Steve and the other asshole. Or were going to start without them.â
âRelax ladies weâre here.â Bucky announced, giving Sam and cheeky grin. He nudged his legs off the side to sit, but Sam shook his head and kicked his legs back up.
âWhat movieâs first?â Steve asked pulling out the large box of DVDâs from behind the TV stand.
It was a large clear plastic bin with half scratched off stickers. The memories of Becca sticking them all over Buckyâs things was fresh in your mind as you stared off into the distance. Sheâd constantly have any sort of glittery, scented, or stickers with her favorite foods on them. When Bucky had shown up to take you to prom, there was a pink glittery heart on his shoulder.
âI vote we watch Terminator.â
âSam we always watch that movie.â
âYeah well get used to it (Y/N) itâs a good movie.â
âWell I for one think we should watch The Princess Bride.â Wanda announced as she dug her hand into a bag of M&Mâs.
âNope, weâre watching The Lost Boys.â You said, standing up and grabbing the box out of Steve's hand. He rolled his eyes and stood up, moving to sit in your spot.
âThat shitty eighties movie about the vampires? No thanks.â Sam groaned and took a handful of popcorn from the bowl. You scoffed, placing the disk in the player and turning to face him, your hands resting on your hips.
âShut your trap, itâs a good movie.â You hissed, sticking your tongue out at him. He gave you a playful wink and turned his attention to the screen. Surveying the area around you, you noticed Steve was now occupying your seat. Pursing your lips, a small groan left your lips. The only empty seat was next to Bucky.
Unwillingly you trudged over and plopped down beside him, your heart obviously had a different plan from your brain.
Curling your legs up into your chest, and resting your head on your knees you relaxed as best as you could beside him and focused on the movie.
The movie played quietly in the background of your thoughts as you wondered why he came back. You thought he loved it over there, from what Steve had told you, he was having a wonderful time. But then again, Steve was never good with translating sarcasm. No matter if it was in person or over text. He sucked at it, plain and simple.
Bucky also wondered why he came back sometimes. He missed his friends, his sister, and his home⌠you.
Bucky had always lived a hectic life. He grew up beside Steve, ever since birth they had been close. Their mothers were friends so it was only natural the pair would become close.
Steve eventually went from a scrawny kid with asthma who had a knack for fighting bullies to, Steve the football player, no longer stricken with the burden of not being able to breathe. A chick magnet, who was so kind to girls it was almost unbelievable he hadnât dated anyone.
And then Steve met Y/N. You became fast friends and Bucky could have sworn you knew one another since you were born just like him and Steve. He had met you in sophomore year. Three years, and Steve had finally introduced him to you. But it wasnât just simple you. Bucky was introduced to the person who changed his life. A beautiful girl who he swore made his heart beat louder than it ever had. But of course, Bucky thought you and Steve were in love. You were the only one who he allowed to refer to him as âStevie.â He hated that nickname, but not when you said it. So Bucky backed off, until your large group of friends all got smashed at a party and Steve embarrassingly kissed some dude on the track team. You practically burst with joy for him for finally doing it and all Bucky could do was sit there, beer in a cup now warming due to the burning in his hand, where you gripped it in pure joy for your shared best friend.
It was then that Bucky had made it his plan to get you to fall for him in the same way he fell for you. It was easier said than done, but he eventually won your heart.
You became his favorite person. The one he would constantly visit, and stop whatever he was doing to see you. You became his home.
He thought your voice was smooth like honey, and as sweet as the sugar his mom would put on his cheerios when he was younger. Your voice would seep into the cracks of his soul, to remind him heâd always have you.
He even had you now, as your head rested against his shoulder, the rest of your body slumped against the back of the couch. Soft snores rang through his ears, focusing only on you. Heâd be damned if he or anyone else woke you up. The movie ended about an hour ago, and everyone had gone to bed. But not without some snide or silly comments on how you were cuddled up against him.
However, he paid no mind to them. All he thought about was how he missed your arms around him, your body heat radiating off of you, keeping him impossibly warm. The familiar scent of lavender and vanilla filled his nostrils as he relaxed all parts of his body but his right arm where you were curled up against. An odd position, yeah but for you? Heâd fall out of a plane if it meant keeping you safe. (Iâm sorry forgive me for that reference lol)
He felt you stir beside him, and Bucky froze, his breath halted in his lungs as he very slowly glanced down towards you. Your face scrunched up as you wiped at your cheek, after pulling up from his shoulder. Your eyes blinked open, and Bucky quietly watched your eyelashes kiss at your cheeks every time they fluttered shut. He froze again, praying you wouldnât freak out, and that youâd calmly get up and go to bed, or curl up next to him again.
You chose neither and sat up fully, hunching forward and grabbing the remote from the coffee table.
ââNother movie?â You asked, leaning back against the couch and looking over at him. He nodded and focused his gaze on the screen as you chose a crappy netflix original. â âM sorry for falling asleep on you by the wayâŚâ You mumbled, running your fingers through your hair. Bucky let out a faint chuckle and shook his head.
âIâm happy to be your headrest doll, long as you donât drool.â
âShut up Buck, that was one timeâŚâ You groaned, lightly punching his shoulder. He just shook his head and kept his eyes trained on your face, and he swore he saw a hint of a smile curling at your lips.
Smiling at him? Maybe, he could only hope.
Discarding the thought, much to fast for his own taste, he busied himself by grabbing some popcorn and tossing it into his mouth.
Maybe one day heâd work up the courage to actually talk to you, not some silly banter that was somewhere on the cusp of anger and misread feelings from old times⌠maybe.

Close Reading âThe Pathâ Season 1 Episode 1.
This is not really a recap. More of a series of observations regarding the storytelling, symbolism, and subliminal foreshadowing in The Path.
Iâm not an academic and this may all be obvious stuff to you guys but the show made an impression on me for its use of visual symbolism. I thought Iâd start at the beginning but Iâll be referencing future plot lines and episodes. There is a LOT of foreshadowing in this series, appropriate given that prophesy is a major theme and I will be talking about what is being foreshadowed. so if you havenât watched both seasons you might want to stay away from spoilers.Â
For more erudite discussion of symbolism on the show please see the wonderful @theyellowsnake who says all perfectly.Â
So The First Episode of Season one of the The Path is pretty much the perfect Pilot. It sets the scene and leaves you hungry for more.
There is a little too much exposition in there . But it also, almost subliminally,  tells you everything you need to know about⌠Well⌠Everything. Every twist, every character, every hidden agenda is right there in the pilot. If youâre looking closely enough.Â
SPOILERS from here on in folks. For both Season 1 and 2.
Intro Scene: Rindge Trailer Park. Â
The Trailer Park. Symbol of American poverty, destroyed by a literal act of God.
The â Church of Faithâ sign, Church destroyed, useless and empty
The Schoolbus on its side destroyed.
Both Church and School as institutions have failed this society, a ruined society as symbolised by the trailer park. They are unable to offer sanctuary or comfort to these people. They have not been able to fulfil their purpose. IE. to prevent people from sliding to the bottom of the economic and spiritual âladderâ in the first place.
A woman clutches her baby and literally cries âSomebody help me!â Into the chaos. âOh God!â
We meet Mary. Crawling through the trash. She looks for water and finds antifreeze or similar poison. Â She tries to drink again from a pipe and someone stops her, that water is also poison.
Poisoned water is a huge part of the Book of Revelation in regard to the Apocolypse.
â Revelation 8:11
The name of the star is Wormwood. A third of the waters turned bitter like wormwood oil, and many people died from the bitter waters.â
We hear the sound of Horns. Like the horns of angels at Armageddon. ( Also Revelation 8-11)Â Â Itâs no wonder Mary later compares Cal to an angel.
Mary climbs the garbage heap. Metaphorically this is the start of he rise from the ashes of her old life. As well as an early climbing metaphor. Â She sees Cal from the top of the trash mountain. This is their first moment of connection. Even though he doesnât see her. Something about him is compelling to her.
Here come the Meyerists into this apocalyptic scene. But to them itâs no metaphor. They believe the end times are really coming. The Tornado is, for them, a real harbinger of doom.
Its a curious thing that when institutions fail people. When the Law, Healthcare, Schools and Church fail to provide what they should. That is when religious cults step in to fill the gap. This is well illustrated here.
Mary gets what she needs the most at the at moment. Not water (she barely drinks it). She gets her salvation, her Angel. We donât know yet that sheâs been waiting for him since she was a little girl.Â
The Woman with the baby gets her prayer answered.
âWhat do you needâ? Cal asks the shocky old man. He wants the picture of his wife- all he has left of her memory. Cal doesnât try to get him to calm down. Or lead him away from the carnage like an EMT would. âHelp this man find his wife!â He shouts, as though its the most important thing he can imagine. Because he knows in a spiritual sense , it really is. Â In that moment the old man needs that scrap of paper more than water or medical care.Â
The Meyerist eye is prominent. They âSeeâ the peopleâs need. âNeedâ is often reference thought the series. âThere is so much Need!â the characters say repeatedly. Â The Church, the School, the Hospitals, the Society itself have all metaphorically failed us.Â
We ( humans) Â are let down in a spiritual sense by religion that offers no real substance, physically by bad or absent food and medicine, mentally by a schooling system that doesnât educate the whole person. The list goes on. The Meyerists think they are the answer to this very real need. In this way the show is quite a scathing social commentary.Â
As a viewer Iâm subconsciously  pumping my fist in the air saying â Yay Cult!â Although I donât even realise how Iâm being manipulated yet.
Animated Credits Scene:
Four figures climb a mountain, presumably this is an interpretation of Meyerismâs origin myth and the figures are Steve, Silas, Felicia and Bill. With Steve reaching enlightenment at the summit of Huayna Picchu.Â
But there is an alternative interpretation:Â
Look at the placements of the credits:
The close up of the climbing figureâs hands as he struggles up the rocks in the rain remind you of anything? Â Maryâs climb up the garbage heap visually mirrors the climb in the intro.Â
Emma Greenwell - Maryâs real name.
This is not an easy climb. Its a struggle. The man makes it to the top, stands at the summit and raises his arms in victory. He made it.
Hugh Dancy Calâs real name.Â
The figure could just as easily be Cal, who, like Mary ( except in a  more metaphorical sense), has struggled to the âtop of the heapâ through his own personal suffering and stands victorious. Having finally made it into a position of power. This is one of many themes that connect Mary and Cal. (More on that later.)Â
We see The Future : Tornado -Fire - Flood.
A Tornado ( the one that levels the trailer park.) Â Is the opening of Season 1.
There is a prominent flash of lightning. Which is perhaps a portent to the lighting that scars Eddie and kills Steve.
The Fire ( Richardâs self immolation and burning of records room) closes Season 2.
The Flood⌠Could be foreshadowing of season 3. It seems to wash away the structure of the burning building. Much like the water scandal coverup helped wash away Sarahâs trouble regarding the blackmail ( using tapes Richard set on fire in same building).Â
Or it could be a symbolic flood washing away the movement forever?
We see the barns, the compound growing in size and number.
A figure running in room - Eddie in the therapy room?
Snake wrapped around Steveâs corpse. Open to interpretation as the Yellow snake symbolises psychic ability as well as betrayal in folklore. It also symbolises Cal at various points in the tale. (Hugh Dancy even starts to look snakelike toward the end of season 2.) Â A lot has been said on this elsewhere. It is perhaps not an accident that is portrayed wrapped so closely around Steve. Snakes are rarely positive symbols to a western audience. In a religious context we are reminded of the serpent in Eden. ( More on that later too.)Â
Speaking of Eden. Heres Adam and Eve. Or Eddie and Sarah or whichever archetype you choose. Accompanied by the name of the literal creator God of this particular universe: Jessica Goldberg. have I mentioned that I love symbolism?
Scene: Dinner at The Lanes:
Lane means Path⌠Glad thats out of the way. Now on to saying grace.
âThank you for this gift of bread to sustain these vessels, our bodies, so that we may have the energy to create a more beautiful world and break through our blocks and barriers in this life and ascend the ladder of enlightenment so that someday we may be free of these earthly forms and live as light together in the garden. We express deepest gratitude for this day, and every day, for the gift of this passage, and that we found the ladder. There is one spirit whose name is Truth.â
So this sums up their whole belief system in a few seconds and its great because the show doesnât hammer you over the head with the basic tennants every five minutes after that. they just assume you get it. It also has beauty and a sinister undertone, lets never forget that theyâre a doomsday Cult.
But lets look closer:
âGive us this day our daily breadâ says the Lords Prayer. The daily bread is just what sustains us for this  day. Its the bare minimum of care, which so many people donât get.
And whom we see in this comfortable scene, the Lanes have a comfortable life, if not extravagant. They have what they need. Their needs are met.
Have you guys heard of Maslowâs hierarchy of needs?  itâs a motivational theory in psychology comprising a five tier model of human needs often depicted as hierarchical levels within a pyramid⌠Sound familiar?Â
Someone Like Mary doesnât even have the lowest level of needs met. She couldnât even get clean water. Her basic safely was compromised and she was terribly abused by the people who should have loved her.
Sarah has her Psysiological, Safely and Love/Belonging needs met. Itâs debatable if at this point in the series she has fully achieved the Esteem level but sheâs well on her way there being an 8R and well respected within the community. Itâs the last level. Self- Actualisation, which is problematic for her (and all the characters). Because its the level no Cult can allow its members to reach. Particularly that pesky â Acceptance of Factsâ one.
Eddie, upon his return from Peru is struggling with this level. With his own Self-Actualisation. He knows his Esteem needs are at odds with the truth. And while he lives a âLife of Liesâ he isnât getting his needs met. He NEEDS to live an authentic life. Its the only thing he can do. His âpathâ leads toward truth one way or another. Hence the great irony of the Meyerist creed: âThere is one spirit whose name is Truth.â ⌠That, at least, is a lie. The Truth in this series is multifaceted and subjective.Â
Cal pretends to be at the top ( of The Ladder and The Pyramid.) But he ascended in a dishonest way. Though nepotism, prostitution and maybe blackmail.
So while he struggles with morality, problem solving and the sad acceptance of facts he is also struggling with the Esteem level. He so desperately wants to be respected and he has no real confidence ( see his self help tapes for evidence.) And while he struggles with that he is also struggling with the Love/Belonging level. Because the one thing he really canât have is intimacy. For reasons that later become clear. He is a lonely person. he has no real friends , no family and no sexual intimacy, ( heâs either a virgin or celibate when we meet him.) His image is one of a Self- Actualised leader. But he is living a lie. In truth heâs still a child desperate for safety.
In fact I speculate that the truth of the matter is that each Meyerist convert entered the Movement while struggling with Need. I think that If they left the movement they would revert back to the same point they entered it. Because the movement provides for them ( or should) but it doesnât give them Self- Actualisation, which is what they need in order to be independent and masters of their own fate. Â
So we have the usual Exposotional Dinner Talk. we learn that Eddies just back from Peru. Cal is coming, Steve is writing and Russell is a useless asshole. Also that for a person to ascend the latter all the way they probably shouldnât get married. Hawk isnât old enough to start the Ladder yet and everyone feels bad about the tornado.
We like these guys, weird Peruvian drug trip religion aside they seem like our kind of people. (Except Joy though , sheâs goddam annoying.) We find ourselves identifying with and liking members of a closed religious cult. This is quite an achievement for the writers.
Sex Scene 1:
Until the slip scene. because no one in history, male or female has ever been aroused by a slip.
The sex though. is it necessary? Not really⌠But yes really. Much like in real life, the way people fuck on this show tells us a lot about their emotional state. Its code for all the things they canât say.  If that happens to line up nicely with a networks desire for lots of sex on their show then⌠Cool I guess. Also. the eye is front and centre because Meyerism is at the centre of their personal life in an uncomfortably voyeristic way. No one has privacy in this place. Not really. There is a disturbing disrespect for boundaries within the extended Lane family and within Meyerism in general. and maybe cults in general too.
Eddie and Sarah are emotional sex havers. They laugh, they cry, they make eye contact. The whole things very uncomfortable for the viewer who may be watching with their parents, but very intimate. Contrast and compare:
Scene: Calâs return: Â
Cal. The no sex haver who reunites with old flame Sarah. He pretends to be over it. He isnât. She broke his heart by leaving him for  Eddie when they were young. How young? We never know,  Eddie and Sarah were  likely in their mid- late teens when they Met. We donât know how long Sarah and Cal were together or when they met.
Can we assume that they grew up on the compound together? I think so. Cal mentions to his mother on Episode 3 that, while they used to live in tents, they now have a campus. So he probably grew up there with Sarah, Russell and Tessa. But heâs been in California for three years happily avoiding the East Coast winters. ( he doesnât like the cold because his drunken sot of a father did, in fact, keep him in a tent in the middle of winter.) Its perhaps worth noting here that he is returning to his childhood home. This is important because its where his neurosis re- surfaces. Its where his pain lives.
Anyway he meets Sarah, knows her well enough to see something wrong and immediately twists it to his advantage. Its the first, rather obvious , look at his manipulative personality. But heâs sincere when he says its good to see her. And that heâs going to âcome stalk you , like old times.â He probably did too. hanging out with Eddie and Sarah to be close to her, or maybe to them both, for friendship but certainly with an agenda of infiltrating their relationship. Which is probably why Eddie doesnât trust him. We donât either. Because heâs always acting. Pretending to be someone heâs not ( Â Self- Actualised leader of men. ) We only rarely see glimpses of the real man beneath.
School: Hawk and Eddie scene.
No Symbolism here but I love the relationship between these two. Hawk is annoying in the way teenagers actually are annoying not in the way precocious â Talk like adults with philosophy degreesâ teenagers on TV usually are. Both he and Summer are excellently written in this respect. Eddie is a real dad, not a perfect dad. Just a guy who enjoys time with his kids. Hawk hates school. Didnât we all?
Scene: Â Mary Sees Cal again/Conversation with Eddie:
So like so many scenes on this show , what appears to be a throwaway moment of filler is actually telling us something. While the music and stylised camera work distracts us from the dialogue between Cal and Eddie this is what theyâre saying (according to the closed captions.)Â
Cal: âHey, man, Iâll come join you later. Sit in on your testimonial.â
Eddie: âOh, no. You donât have to do that. Same old story. Youâve heard it a million times.â
Cal: âAre you kidding? I love your story.
Gets me fired up every time.â
Cal wants to sit in on Eddieâs testimonial, despite the fact that heâs heard it many times and its depressing as holy hell. Eddie would rather he didnât. Why?
Skip ahead to Eddie telling his story. Interesting, isnât it that we barely learn anything about Eddieâs life before Meyerism? Â So lets look at the facts. What do we know about Eddie Lane at this point?
He had an unhappy home life. We know this because he lived with his older brother instead of his parents ( The original script had a line about his mother being mentally ill which they later edited out, because I believe it would have made future twists too obvious. The subtext is still there.)
He loved his brother. His brother killed himself. Eddie Has. Not. Dealt. With. It. This is so clear. His own dialogue tells us this. He ran. Ran from the situation and straight into a cult.
He starts telling his story. His relationship with his brother was âthe one thing he had.â And when he lost it he lost part of himself. He breaks down, he canât finish the story. Meyerism didnât heal this particular pain. Cal to the rescue!
â Oh yeah and then you found us and it was all cool right?â He essentially says.
So Cal does probably step in here to help Eddie. But at the same time theres something censorious about it. He is clearly steering the story in a different direction than it was going? Something is missing from Eddies narrative. Perhaps the fact that he is still suffering, that despite the ladder, his brotherâs death is still an open wound for him. ( This kind of adds a layer of creepy to Calâs assertion that he âLoves him like a brotherâ Later on.) AlsoâŚWhat happened between âDiscovered Johnnyâs dead bodyâ and â Ended up in a bookshopâ?
Something smells fishy. Â But we are told enough to piece a few things together. There was some mental illness in his family, he doesnât want to look too deeply at his past. He had a lot of anger. (When he arrived he was murderously angry. (We learn this later from Sarah.) Thatâs not what he looks like now though. Not at all. Meyerismâs victory or his own? Was Sarah his saving grace?
In a way Eddie is the biggest enigma on the show. Maybe even moreso than Steve.
Which brings us toâŚ
Scene: Sarah talks about Steve.Â
And the fact that she thinks the light shines out of his ass. Literally.Â
So this is our first proper introduction to Steve:
We are told that he lives so deeply in truth that he is one with the Light. His followers believe him to be an ascended master of sorts and therefore an immortal spiritual being rather than just a man. and once again and one of many times⌠There is a dichotomy between what we are being told and what we are seeing. The sound and the visuals are often at odds on this show.Â
Because hanging behind her on the wall is a picture of a dude. A dude named Steve. and heâs handsome, charismatic looking I guess but just as prosaic as his name ( Which incidentally meansâ Light Bringerâ in Hebrew.) . (He also has that same high collar, uptight shirt thing going on as Cal does.) This is one of may times that the placement of the Steve photo is telling us something.Â
Later Eddie reads to Summer from the junior edition of The Ladder. Whilst having a very confusing existential crisis.
And we learn about Steveâs past. What do we know about Steve?
He was a military doctor, who did terrible things to soldiers at a hospital. Had a crisis of confidence, lost his shit and took a very long walk⌠Also I dare anyone to say that isnât Kodiak in the illustration.Â
Sooo⌠What do you guys know about Project MK Ultra?Â
From Wikipedia:Â
âProject MKUltra â sometimes referred to as the CIAâs mind control program â is the code name given to a program of experiments on human subjects, at times illegal, designed and undertaken by the United States Central Intelligence Agency.[1] Experiments on humans were intended to identify and develop drugs and procedures to be used in interrogations and torture, in order to weaken the individual to force confessions through mind control. Organized through the Scientific Intelligence Division of the CIA, the project coordinated with the Special Operations Division of the U.S. Armyâs Chemical Corps.[2]
The operation began in the early 1950s, was officially sanctioned in 1953, was reduced in scope in 1964, further curtailed in 1967, and officially halted in 1973.[3] The program engaged in many illegal activities,[4][5][6] including the use of unwitting U.S. and Canadian citizens as its test subjects, which led to controversy regarding its legitimacy.[4](p74)[7][8][9] MKUltra used numerous methodologies to manipulate peopleâs mental states and alter brain functions, including the surreptitious administration of drugs (especially LSD) and other chemicals, hypnosis,[citation needed]sensory deprivation, isolation and verbal abuse, as well as other forms of psychological torture.âÂ

Lovely.Â
So⌠You guys Steve was totally one of those mad scientists. Who tortured Vietnam soldiers to try an achieve mind control with drugs ( and also sarin gas and other agonizing tortures. This isnât a bit of weed and a walk in the woods. These people were psychopaths of the highest order.)Â
Lets me just repeat that⌠To achieve mind control⌠With Drugs. Does this throw up any red flags for anyone else?Â
What else do we know about Steve? I mean FOR SURE He went to Peru and started a cult. Which used Ayahuasca and other drugs to induce hallucinatory states.Â
Manipulation into shared delusions? Maybe. Theres no doubt Felicia believes she burned her hands on a Burning Ladder of Truth. But her husband Bill reminds her that there was a bonfire⌠And that they were âReally High.â He wouldnât have had to convince many people, just a handful, to engender belief in many.Â
Ok so lets give him the benefit of the doubt and assume that he did have an ethical crisis while working for the CIA⌠He still used drugs on people⌠Afterwards.Â
And then theres the trope of the Morally questionable doctor who runs to South America. Donât tell me weâre not supposed to get slightly Megele-ish vibes from this guy.Â
Then we cut from Eddies Life of Lies directly to Calâs life of lies:
Scene: Cal and Mary.
So this scene has a lot going on in it but I think the main takeaway the first time I saw it was that Cal was married to The Ladder. Weâre not sure exactly how much he believes in it at this point or how much heâs manipulating Mary into becoming an acolyte. But upon Re-Watch⌠Oh boy.
So Cal doesnât have personal relationships. Certainly not with newbies. So why does he go out of his way so much for Mary?
Well the thing is that she has now met her basic needs. Remember our pyramid of pop psychology?
So sheâs no longer about to die, sheâs physically safe, had a shower, has a place to stay. Now she wants a sense of love and belonging. Which she tries to get by the only means she knows. Sex. Boy did she ever pick the wrong guy.
Or did she?
Heres the thing. Cal is also stuck at this level. He and Mary have the same need. Officially there is a huge power disparity in the relationship and its highly inappropriate. He may be a leader and she may only be a possible. But under the skin they are both needful of the same thing and canât ever get it because theyâve been damaged so badly. Itâs doubtful that either of them will ever move beyond this need.
This scene tells us everything we need to know. Though the performances mostly. Theres a disturbingly childlike quality to both of them. Visually compounded by Maryâs little girl nightie and butterfly underpants.
When Cal gently rebuffs her advances, Dancyâs performance tells us a few things. (In interviews from Season 1 era He described Calâs relationship with Steve as âComplicated.â Iâm sure they had the back story planned from the outset.)
For those into micro gestures. When he said the word â Sexâ he flinches and wrinkles his nose in disgust. There is a lot of barely repressed anger in that tiny moment. Because he understands Maryâs Damage. Really understands it. Unfortunately.
They are also reflected in the window, and refections of one another figuratively speaking. Which is why they both love and hate each other at various points. But never, ever do we get the feeling that they donât understand one another.
Mary says â All my life Iâve had this fantasy that one day an angel would fly down from the sky and save me.â She feels as though she is fulfilling her destiny. This may be the only time in her life that an authority figure hasnât taken advantage of her.Â
At that point there is a moment of recognition, almost elation from Cal. That could be interpreted as religious fervour at having saved a soul. But I believe itâs meant to be identification, the discovery of a kindred spirit.
âWe were meant to find each other.â He says. he doesnât say â You were meant to find usâ or âthe movementâ. But âEach other.â
Where was his Angel? Who does he call an Angel later in the series?
âMy colleague is a fucking angel.!â He tells John Ridge in episode 5 and to Sarah in Season 2 âI miss your light. The way you looked at me that saved me as a kid.â Suddenly his obsession with Sarah takes on a more tragic, if more disturbing angle. She was a ray of light in his otherwise miserable childhood. He sees her, we learn later, as a role model for what is good and right behaviour. What does this tell us about his other role models in the movement?
Scene: Eddieâs Retreat.
We see the retreat at the Cousco compound. Which appears to be a converted Spanish church. Interestingly a lot of Catholic imagery is associated with Eddie on the show. Â In the courtyard Silas is helping a bald dude, Miranda Frank is dancing, and Eddie is tripping balls.
Ayahuasca as a therapeutic substance helps people come to term with their past trauma. Causing them to re-live it. In a Arthur Janov âPrimal Screamâ, cleansing sort of way. They come out of the experience feeling reborn and with neurosis cured. Â It is not a particularly safe drug cocktail however. It can be an especially strong potential trigger for those predisposed to Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia, Dissociative Disorder and other psychosis.
So we can see what Eddie might not be having a particularly good trip, what with his past trauma and all. And unsurprisingly his brother comes back to haunt him. With a secret message. In the hallway to Steveâs room is an Owl sculpture.Â
Silasâ totem is an owl. Presumably this is his main hangout. As well as a shamanic symbol of wisdom the owl is a Gnostic symbol of demons, illness, disease and death. There are some oil painting on the wall which look like Steve might have painted them ( They look a bit like his âflowersâ from season 2.) Â
Heres the thing⌠Is Eddie experiencing a moment of genuine clairvoyance here? I thought at first it was all a drug trip and he hadnât really moved from the courtyard. His brotherâs ghost certainly leads him to the room. ButâŚ
Isnât this compound actually where the movement is storing Steve? Could Eddie conceivably have wandered of while tripping and stumbled into Steveâs room? We do find out later that he literally got up and walked off somewhere for a while because Miranda Tells Cal so in Episode 4. Once again the truth is subjective but maybe less so if witnessed by more than one person. He also, quite possibly saw more rooms on the way.
Eddie sees a vision of Johnny twice more in the series. Once on the shore at Coney Island in S1 Â and once in his near death vision of the garden in S2. All three times Johnny is guiding him towards a major spiritual decision. But two out of the tree times Eddie was tripping on Ayahuasca. The time at the shore could be a genuine moment of psychosis, we donât know. Eddie doesnât either. It seems real to him, and he wasnât expecting it. Â
Either way. He knows  Steve isnât a immortal ascended ball of light. And those extra rungs that were supposed to enable them to ascend to the garden âaint coming, and by extension Cal is lying to them all. Thats a lot of doubts for one day. Â
Scene: Eddie and Sarah fight:
The thing about Meyerists is that there supposed to be 100% honest at all times, as a result they are actually secretive as hell. Eddie lies repeatedly to Sarah during this scene, she assumes heâs sleeping with someone else, specifically Miranada Frank. , and he lets her think that because its less painful than the truth. Â
There is curious bit of dialogue here.
â Sarah: All right, I love you, and I chose you.
Eddie: You chose me?
Sarah: Â I chose you.
Eddie: What do you mean, you chose me? Chose me over Cal? Is that what this is?
Sarah: Â No, no! That is not what I am saying.â
What does this tell us about their relationship? Itâs important to her that she âChoseâ him. But everyone chooses their partners right? I mean, unless they have an arranged marriage. and the Meyerists donât⌠Do they? ( more on this later. I have a theory.)
In any event. She clearly feels that she took a risk on him ( maybe because he was a convert, an outsider, and she was the golden girl of Meyerism who was âsupposedâ to end up with Cal? Eddie reacts so strongly to this, perhaps because it implies that he held her back from her birthright somehow?
So maybe the subtext here is â I sacrificed so much to be with you, how could you cheat on me after that?â
â Look at me.
You are everything to me, okay? Youâre it.
I remember the day.
I never imagined a future for myself before you,
but then there there you were with that glass of water,
and I didnât have to try to imagine one anymore.
I had it.âÂ
Reassuring her, she is the be all and end all for him. She is his salvation. Period. He was suicidal when he met her and she saved him. ( Much like she âsavedâ Cal as a child.) Sarah as saviour figure is also a running theme on the show. (NB:We'll see Eddie as "Chosen One" again too)
âThere you wereâ he tells her , remembering when they met â With that glass of waterâŚâ
Oh hello WATER my old friend!Â
We can imagine a young Eddie, bereft and suicidal, thirsty being given comfort by the Meyerist movement. Water. the shows favourite symbol of salvation. Actually the shows favourite symbol period. Besides Ladders. She pulled him out of his private apocalypse. Just like Mary at the trailer park. They gave him survival. His doubt is a very big deal. He stands to lose everything.  As he says to Allison in the next scene:
âI donât know what the hell Iâm doing here.
You know,
I was high as a kite,
so what I saw, or what I think I saw, was it real?
You know, I mean, was the vision of my brother even real?
I mean, am I gonna blow up my life,
a life that I love,
because of something I donât even know if I really saw?â
Yes he is. Because he feels the truth of it in his bones and he canât live his life without Self- Actualisation. He is willing to give it all up for his personal truth. He loves her more than anything. But he will give her up if he has to. Contrast with Cal who holds onto his past infatuation and canât let it go.Â
Speaking of which:Â
Scene: Sarah visits Cal.Â
Ok so this scene tells us an awful lot and is pretty damn creepy.
The Meyerists have no boundaries, we knew this, so Sarah going to tell her friend Cal about her marital problems is disturbingly par for the course.Â
Also I think Cal painted that bird. Remember he used to enjoy art once?
Then theres the dialogue:
âI was so scared of you when we were young.
Before Eddie.
Youâd sneak into my bed.
Your hands were like fire.
I thought, âThis guy could never really love a person.
Not for the years.
He needs too much.â
Firstly⌠WHAT??? He sneaked into her bed and felt her up? And she was scared? Ok so she seems to be implying that it was exciting but⌠Also HOW young are we talking here. This seems like a rather strange normalisation of something dark.Â
So Cal was probably sexually inappropriate with other kids his age. No surprises there its a classic sign of sexual abuse. We also learn that he couldnât be emotionally intimate in the way she Wanted because he NEEDED too much.Â
Hello Pyramid my old friend.
He was stunted forever in survival mode because of Steve and couldnât quite crack the sex and romance thing. And the horrible thing is that he remains silent the whole scene and literally canât seem to respond to her because the dude is literally so full of secrets if he speaks he will open the floodgates and destroy the Earth.Â
So this is where we come to my theory:Â
That terrible dialogue:Â
Its so out of place. It doesnât sound like her. ( She even quotes it like someone else said it.)Â
But you know who does sound like that? Â â Flowers on Your Walls of Doomâ, arch manipulator of the young, Steve.
On the few occasions we hear Steve speak in flashback. He sounds theatrical. Almost Shakesperian.Â
My theory is⌠That Calâs later behaviour with Mary and Sean the âarranged marriageâ is part of an abusive cycle. I think he repeats what was done to him. I think maybe Steve sent a young Cal to Sarahâs bed in the first place.
In the same way Cal later sends Mary to Sean. Then gets a full report from her. THAT scene in ep 4 is very reminiscent of incest or something like it.Â
Oh and would you look at whoâs watching them from the photo on the wall Behind Cal?
Hence why Sarah âChoseâ Eddie. But for some reason didnât have the agency to âChooseâ Cal. Maybe Choosing Eddie was her one act of real agency within the movement? Lets not forget she nearly ran away with her sister. We might want to ask why?Â
Then perhaps Steve sent Cal away. Because he couldnât have him getting to close to anyone. Offering him a life of vocation instead.
I donât know for sure  but it seems like something like this might have happened. And hereâs whyâŚÂ
Scene: Cal and Mary visit Dad/ Platoâs Cave:
Right after this scene, Cal goes straight to Mary and suggests they âmake it betterâ with a visit to her dad. Going to Mary is  something he often does when his past comes back to haunt him, because she is,to him, like his inner child. She is his past writ large, open and honest and bleeding on the floor. No secrets. He acts out through her, processes his own trauma through her. How self aware he is about it is debatable. But his meeting with Sarah seems to have triggered him.
When you understand a bit more about Meyerism itâs shocking just how off the script Cal went by going to her Dadâs place and beating the shit out of him. Why did he feel the need to do it rather than just give her some Ladder Therapy? If he believed in Meyerism wouldnât he try and get her  to forgive? to move beyond it?
Because when she says the Ladder wonât help make it better he knows thats true, even if he canât admit it to himself yet. And he goes very, very transgressive. Almost as though the act of violence is a rebellion against everything Steve stood for. Although at first all he wants is an apology. Demanding Mr. Cox to kneel and grovel in the dirt for forgiveness. ( Which is actually pretty Meyerist of him.) Its also possibly exactly what he would like from Steve.
But the turning point comes when Mr. Cox spits in his face. THEN he loses it. We find out later that Cal used to hand out flyers on the street as a kid and people used to spit on him. He may have a neurosis about it. But the whole confrontation with Mr. Cox becomes more about him than Mary at this point. If it ever was about her at all. But he does give her exactly what she needs. Vengence, justice, closure. And as a viewer, honestly. I was cheering the crazy bastard on.Â
So what do we know about Cal at this point?
He doesnât believe, deep down, in what heâs preaching.
He has a lot in common with Mary.
He has a terrible temper.
He is capable of extreme violence.
He doesnât appreciate being spat on. At all.
This does not make for a safe cult leader.
But it does beg the question whats more dangerous, a cult leader who doesnât believe in his own propaganda, or one who does? Think of The Branch Davidians or Heavens Gate. Or the very Steven Meyer-esque David Berg and The Children of God cult? Belief can be a very dangerous thing too.
The scene is beautifully edited with Calâs Plato Speech. Illustrating his hypocrisy even while he preaches.
Platoâs cave.
My favourite scene. Ironic and the perfect analogy.  Cal essentially narrates his own life story without knowing it. The guy is somewhat less self aware than he pretends to be⌠And now we know it for sure.  It ties into the episode title;  âWhat The Fire Throws.â
Shadows of reality. We all live in our own version of reality with our own version of truth. Eddie has decided heâs had enough of this one. Cal is actually heading in the same direction, belief wise, as Eddie but heâs trapped in the institution in a way that Eddie isnât. Steve literally made him paint a false reality for himself and without it heâs staring into the abyss.Â
Sarah has never even questioned her shadows. She was born in that cave. He presents the perfect argument against religion, and closed communities in particular. All the while railing against regular society and the untruths therein. The point is. There are many cults and we all live in one. Do we put our faith in a person to lead us? Eddies path is a lonely one, because the Room of Truth can only fit one person at a time. Would I let him lead me? Well.. Iâm not pumping my fist and yelling â Yay Cult!â anymore.Â
And as a viewer? We are presented with a reality on screen. And we are manipulated by that reality and shown shadows of reality, angles on things. This story isnât all it seems. Theres an element of 4th wall breaking here too. Because it looks , at points, like heâs preaching right out of the screen.Â
And speaking of TRUTH:
Eddie admits his. But not to the people he loves. To a stranger in a motel room. Because sometimes the lie youâre living is the one you love the most.Â
