Something, something ... parallels. When I was 10yo and watching DBZ for the first time, when it was first aired in Germany, this was my favourite scene in the entirety of DBZ, and it still is to this day:

When the people of Earth all give their energy for the final genkidama that's supposed to finish off Buu.

Linking the German version so you can experience the original soundtrack (I'm sorry, the US dub soundtrack (and the Kai soundtrack for the Buu Saga) can NOT measure up the glory of the original one, and I'm so grateful the German dub kept it):

I was (and am to this day) utterly in love with this particular track, so much that I simply needed to have it with me, at all times.

And here's how I got it in ye olden days before Youtube (well, before I had internet access and knew about YT to MP3 converting lmao):

I had this particular episode taped on VHS (I'm That Old)

I took my phone (Nokia that had the luxury of a COLOR display) and recorded the track. You could literally hear the people cheer on the recording

So, the things about DBZ that were the most formative to me are: this scene, and Vegeta (who started my love for reformed villains and redemption arcs).

Now, it's Vegeta who does the opposite, and yet, the same: he takes energy that was stolen, and returns it to where it belongs, literally giving people their lives back in some cases. (The symbolism of the Namekians being the ones revived by him is CRAZY.)

And the imagery is so similar? I just. ??!?!?!?! HOW AM I TO DEAL.

(Initially I wasn't so sure what to think about this particular point but hey, the D in Dragon Ball stands for Deus Ex Machina, so ... whatever.)

Reading through your revisiting of Digimon Adventure I remembered how much I like Puppet/Pinochiomon as a kid. His death scene actually hit me fairly hard back then, though it was the german dub and ages ago, so i cant say how faithful his arc overall was compared to the original. i always wondered why he randomly got to be an actual character out of the dark masters, though that might just have been by necessity because his portion of the show was by far the longest.

Yeah, it is pretty startling that Pinocchimon got so many episodes. That he shares time with the big backstory infodump and MetalEtemon, I think, is why he got five instead of Piemon's three or the others' two. But he also sort of gets to have a character arc, even if it ends on him doubling-down on his shittiness and receiving instant karma for it.

It's crazy how much more developed this one Dark Master is over even Big Bad Evil Guy Piemon.

It comes from the 1986 German dub of Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen, also know as MASH Part 2. It's called that because it was released before most of the show was dubbed and aired in Germany and was therefore marketed as a sequel to the movie MASH (1970), with the tagline "those crazy medicine men are at it again!"

Yeah.

MASH Part 2 made a number of changes, most notably cutting the end of the bus scene that reveals the baby. That's right, in MASH Part 2, it really was a chicken. So in an effort to explain why Hawkeye had a breakdown absent the trauma that caused it in the original story, they imply he's just sort of generally stressed out, and one of the reasons is that Hawkeye and BJ don't really like each other.

The dialogue of BJ's visit is changed so that BJ compares the size of Erin's feet to a dollar bill, just so Hawkeye can say "that reminds me, you still owe me $150." No, this is not a German idiom. It's just so he can say the word "dollar."

There is never any explanation provided for why BJ owes Hawkeye this much money; $150 in 1953 money is roughly $1,708.58 in 2023 money, so this is isn't exactly pocket change.

Another thing that MASH Part 2 does I guess to justify marketing it as a comedy, is it adds a running bit where two unseen voices tell "jokes" over the P.A. loudspeaker. Most of them are not funny. But the final line in MASH Part 2, after the German BJ says his equivalent of "just in case, I left you a note," as the last shots of Hawkeye and BJ are rolling, is the P.A. loudspeaker guys saying "BJ got away without paying the $150!"

So not only is it bizarre, it's literally the last line in MASH (1986 German edition).

The expert on MASH Part 2 and the person responsible for discovering it is @genderqueer-klinger. Mack created English subtitles for the scene that includes both the first reference to the $150 BJ owes Hawkeye and the MASH Part 2 take on the chicken.

do u have any idea why the dwk cartoon is so big in russia and finland? at least fandom-wise. i just saw that somebody uploaded a german fic and remembered that the show is in fact german lmao. i feel like there are almost no german fanworks around which is a bit crazy. (and also kinda sad, i thought the fic was really interesting because it was so focused on german reality, and i honestly would love to see more of that bc its not something i know much about.)

I don't know why it is like that for Finland, but in Russia films are not as popular as cartoon is. Mainly because there's basically no official translation for them, except for the 1st and maybe 2nd films, the rest are fan made and pretty low-quality. I watched them all. I watched one dude dubbing songs with a monotonous voice. I actually respect that, cuz he translated and voiced everything alone, it's just kinda funny.

I guess it's also the fact that many grew up on it, watching it on the TV, like me. Not like this show was popular, but I see people saying they thought this cartoon was a fever dream once they recognize it lmao.

And I absolutely agree that there should be more german works, because who can describe the environment characters live in better than people who live in this environment. Like in the fic you've mentioned, it was absolutely amazing.

Alas, it's a german franchise and it looks like most grew up watching films/reading books, that's why we don't get that much content with animated series.

Does anyone know what absolutely STRANGE movie this is?

Okay, so I watched this in German (it was playing on TV in extremely rural Germany), but I'm pretty sure it was dubbed, and the original was in some other language. It was also clearly from a very long time ago, though it was in color.

The movie was about the life of Moshe, and it literally showed everything from birth to death in 4 crazy hours (the movie literally covered 80% of the Torah). However, it was really inaccurate in a number of funny ways. First of all, everyone who was supposed to be "brown" was played by a white person (all of whom had blue eyes) with a very egregious spray tan. Think beauty pageant spray tan, only worse. When Moshe talked to HaShem (who only spoke in direct quotes from the Torah translated to German! That part was cool) however, he stopped having a spray tan and became white. My absolute FAVORITE part of the movie however occurred right after the burning bush incident (but before the Exodus actually started happening), when Moshe had a - I swear to Hashem I am not joking - PESACH SEDER. BRO! WHAT ARE YOU CELEBRATING! I guess Hashem granted him some serious foresight, ROFL. So, which of my followers knows what this is called?

Thoughts on The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (1962)

Time for another episode of "Nitrateglow didn't think the panned movie was that bad"... though this one isn't necessarily great either.

The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse was MGM's attempt to remake an old hit. In 1921, under the banner of Metro, the original Four Horsemen was a zeitgeist hit and catapulted Rudolph Valentino to superstardom. It was a lightning in a bottle kind of film, a movie about the horrors of World War I released a few years after the end of that conflict.

The basic plot, because it's late and I'm tired: A lusty Argentine patriarch has two daughters, one married to a German and the other married to a Frenchman. The old man prefers the French part of his family, which causes issues even before WWI rears its ugly head and the two families are drawn into the conflict. The focus is on Julio, the son of the Frenchman. He likes partying, has an affair with a married French woman, and is apolitical, until he isn't because drama. Then he becomes a self-sacrificing hero because personal problems aren't worth a hill of beans in this crazy world.

(That sounded bad, but it's just because I'm sleep deprived. The movie is actually very good and worth watching, I promise. It was directed by Rex Ingram, one of the strongest directors of the 1920s, and it has one of Valentino's best performances too. But crap, I'm supposed to be talking about the remake!!)

Now MGM was thinking about remaking this film as early as the 1940s, but once their 1959 remake of Ben-Hur became a smash hit, they were eager to see what other old blockbusters they could dust off. Four Horsemen was pushed into production, its time period shoved from WWI to WWII, and Vicente Minnelli put behind the camera.

Minnelli wanted to keep the WWI setting, but he was ignored. To be honest, the WWII setting isn't too problematic. The heart of the Four Horsemen story is the family drama and how events outside the family threaten to tear it asunder. Also, you still have Julio's arc from apolitical partyboy to self-sacrificing hero, so the spirit of the original is intact.

This movie isn't bad screenplay-wise due to those strong thematic cores. And Minnelli's visuals are rich as always. I particularly liked the surrealistic flourishes, like the superimposition of the four horsemen over key scenes. A bit campy, perhaps, but whatever, I liked it. And the Andre Previn score is just outstanding: epic, rousing, and romantic.

However, what brings the movie down is the casting of the lovers. Glenn Ford, good an actor as he is, is just wrong for the part. He's 46 playing a role made famous by Valentino at 26, and he's lacking in the charming impetuousness that would make the character credible. (Apparently, Alain Delon was considered but he wasn't famous enough for MGM's liking.) Ingrid Thulin is okay but not exceptional, her performance marred by lack of chemistry with Ford and some obvious dubbing over of her lines by Angela Lansbury doing a French accent. These characters should break my heart but they don't have enough passion to make me care.

It's a decent movie, but not a lost gem. And sorry, I can't help but compare it to the silent film in my head. Between the famous tango scene (not replicated in the remake-- for the best, really) and the finale in the massive graveyard, the mourners lost in a sea of white crosses... God, there's just nothing as memorable in this new version, save for the music.

three ships: well APPARENTLY I am someone who only ever ships anymore, so the real problem is narrowing it down! I'll try to give a variety. Legolas/Gimli, of course, is the OTP of my heart - and also THE ship for tenderness and mutual respect and wondrous shocking life-altering devotion. Soooo I'll go for a totally opposite ship now and say Buffy/Spike, which is intense and horrible and fascinating and multifaceted, and definitely Awakened several things in me. (there are a lot of things I love in fiction or dynamics that fascinate me that I can trace back to that ship, once I peel back the layers.) And finally I'll say Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan, because obviously that's what's fascinating me right now. It's been a very fun way to explore different kinds of a-spectrum relationships - and speaking of awakening things in me, turns out I had a whole Teacher Thing a mile wide and an ocean deep that has been verrrrry fun to play with.

first ever ship: I don't know what really counts for something like this, but I'll go with an answer I gave for a recent ask meme: Percy/Annabeth from the PJO series! I watched these two crazy kids fall in love over the course of years, and I think reading their first kiss was the first time I'd experienced a Chemical Reaction in my brain from something like that. They are so important to me.

I actually love hearing about dubs in other languages as someone who speaks English as a second language myself. Are there any other differences in the dub you feel like pointing out?

In the german live action dub you get basically everyone who dubbed the anime reprising their roles which I absolutely love. Gudo Hoegel was the first version of Buggy I ever heard and he seems to have a blast just chewing the scenery. Doesn’t sound like Jeff Ward at all though which is understandable, since he’s doing the same voice he did for Buggy in the anime, he sounds more like his og Japanese voice actor if anything, but goddammit if he isn’t the first voice in my head I imagine for Buggy. Childhood nostalgia is a powerful thing.

… also yes let’s point out the obvious: the german version for some reason that I don’t quite know translated Luffy as “Ruffy”. I do not know why we did this, I don’t particularly mind the change in German myself, but some people take great issue with it Apperantly? On the flipside imagine growing up hearing people in your language call him “Ruffy” all the time, pronouncing it exactly like you think that would be pronounced based on the way it’s written, only to then watch a japanese dub or the English one and wondering “Who the fuck is “Loof-ee”?

Voice acting is one of my special interest, be careful about what you wish for

First of all I go and drop a ear on german Buggy and I looooooooved it! It fits the english / japanese dub pretty well in my opinion. Also LMAO RUFFY sorry but now I imagine a wish version of Luffy in a stereotypical german costume 😫

About dub differences, now

So if I absolutely loved the OPLA french version - and, if, in my opinion, France often makes *chief kiss* work in matter of voice acting, I really, really, REALLY don't like french version of the anime.

France has... how to say this... A rather shit poor history when it comes to dubbing animes. Back in time, french TV channels bought entire catalogues of anime without really looking at them, and branded them all as "cartoons for kids". Now imagine the face of the producers when they discovered Hokuto no Ken and actually had to make it kid friendly ! One of the ploy they found out was the dub. They make purposely ridiculous dubs for violent animes in order to hide a bit of their initial violences. I think that even if you don't speak french you can appreciate it :

... aaaaand even if it was taken way more seriously, I think that french one piece dubs suffered a bit from this decision too. I just discovered the anime so I don't have a nostalgia filter on it and I can say it's probably one of the only medias I don't watch in french because it ruins *everything*.

For example, Buggy - Or should I say BAGGY because we translated it - and luffy in the french anime :

I don't know if when you're not french it hurts your ears as well, but it's really poorly played and written... and the character suffers a lot from it in my opinion, BAGGY doesn't have this little crazy sparkle he has in japanese and english, and Luffy... Luffy don't play at all lmao, just reading the text 😫

3-D Tribute to Artistic Impulse

One of the interesting and unexpected film stories of 2011 is about 3-D, which simultaneously lost commercial potency and gained artistic credibility. Those who dismiss the format as the industrial gimmick (and excuse for price gouging) that it frequently is may need to reconsider now that a handful of certified auteurs have given it a try. Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese, grand old men of baby-boomer Hollywood, have made 3-D children’s tales (“The Adventures of Tintin” and “Hugo”), which is certainly noteworthy. More remarkable, perhaps even astonishing, is that Werner Herzog and Wim Wenders, stalwarts and survivors of the iconoclastic New German Cinema of the 1970s, have used 3-D in new documentaries.

Mr. Herzog’s “Cave of Forgotten Dreams” and Mr. Wenders’s “Pina” are explorations of the artistic impulse, primordial and postmodern. “Pina” is a tribute to Pina Bausch, the German dancer and choreographer who died in 2009. Her work has appeared on film before; Pedro Almodóvar’s “Talk to Her” uses the dance “Café Müller” as an emotional touchstone. That piece, an obstacle course of wooden chairs and wild emotions set to music by Henry Purcell, figures prominently in “Pina,” encapsulating both Bausch’s aesthetic and Mr. Wenders’s desire to replicate on screen the depths and distances of the staging. The dances in “Pina” take place on traditional stages and also on city sidewalks and tram cars (in Wuppertal, the northwestern German city where Bausch’s company is based), in forests and fields and, thanks to an especially ingenious coup de cinema, in what looks like a portable box. Alternating between highly stylized, precise gestures — of hands, fingers and faces as well as torsos and limbs — and more flowing and expressive movements, the dancers enact dramas of desire, sexual violence and the passage of time.

The cumulative effect is exhilarating and also a bit frustrating, since so many dances are included and woven together the audience does not have the chance to experience any single work in its entirety. But the power and intelligence of Bausch’s approach, which at times seems more cerebral than sensual, is communicated. And there are moments when her discipline and Mr. Wenders’s visual instincts harmonize perfectly, so that instead of enduring yet another well-meaning specimen of “dance on film” you are experiencing dance and film, fully and simultaneously.

In addition to the performances, “Pina” includes interviews with dancers, their words dubbed over their silent, contemplative faces. Instead of talking heads, they are thinking bodies, reflecting on the influence of their mentor. Their devotion to Bausch is evident, though the glowing tributes they offer also suggest that, like many charismatic artists, she cultivated something of a cult of personality. Diverse in age, body type and background, the dancers — speaking French, Russian, Portuguese, Japanese and other languages — convey their awe and gratitude in notably similar terms. “Pina used to say, ‘Be more crazy.’ ” “Pina used to say, ‘Surprise me.’ ” This is touching, but it leaves any analysis of her creative process and the ideas that drove it shrouded in a mist of generality.

But criticism is not really what Mr. Wenders intends. Choreography is a notoriously perishable art. Dances often struggle to outlive their creators. And “Pina” is, above all, an act of preservation, a memorial that is also a defiance of mortality — completely alive in every dimension.

Believe it or not, this genetically-engineered alien thingamajig's entire people, whom is not of this planet or any even remotely near us, speaks our current-day Earth's Deutsch, because I was enrolled into a local exchange program in highschool where I got to learn German at another school and I wanted some character to practice with :)

I can confirm it was definitely not very good German whatsoever, and since graduating i have NOT STUDIED LMAO so i could never hope to write his past properly, but I am too stubborn to change him. i Like this stupid aspect to him. it makes no sense in-universe either, because all him and his people know is that they were made by another alien people for funsies/for power/for science, but they don't know who. They're long gone and even though humans do evolve into genetic modifications and the like by the time he is alive, they were not even close to doing any interstellar nonsense when B's people were actually first created. There are very few of him or his people out in the interstellar side of things currently, so it's not like anyone else is studying it or looking into things, but the current Space Internet theory is that whoever made them could have been near, or studied, Earth and its terrans......... but no one's really certain.

There's also a bunch of new words i frankenstein'd together describing their unique bodies, cultures and people (the "Sauberzunge" portion of his tongue, the "Milchzehen" false toes they have as children, B's species being dubbed the Lila with the other two sophonts on his planet being Rote and Grüne etc). I would be more hesitant to mash shit together like this if German itself did not do this. and it does this frequently. On top of that it's a fairly consistent language in many ways so while i have no doubt it can read weirdly, i don't think it's toooo crazy.?

sadly i do not have much further than all that, for B nor for anyone else. i am actually very bad at voiceclaims tbh!! it does not help that allll of my characters probably have, at minimum, a little strine in them. finding the right voices is one thing, let alone the right accents..........

I don't have anything smart or deep for q10. Him and J are characters whose story has drastically changed as i have grown up, and it will likely continue to change with me, so it's hard to slap down one particular example of a sentence...... Yes, he certainly lies, probably lies every day, but i think the one he would regret the most was whatever it was he must have said that got him stuck as the Alphanull's "temporary" on-ship medic. He doesn't know a damn thing, the computer does it all for him mostly, but someone's gotta pilot that finnicky thing and unfortunately he's something close to qualified
