We got a pretty mixed pie chart this week. To be expected, given how many moments were in this episode. At a tie with the largest pieces of the pie were Hange’s eccentric attempt to greet the Marleyans and Eren’s gunshot figuratively hitting Sasha. Behind that two more options tied in each with 10.4% of the vote - EMA’s conversation at the shooting range and Sasha appreciating Nicolo’s cooking. This is followed closely by Eren’s mirror scene with 9.7% of the vote. Onyankopon explaining why he looks different when Sasha asks him about it took a solid 9% of the vote.

WHAT WAS THE MOST EMOTIONAL PART OF THE VISIT TO SASHA’S GRAVE? 144 Responses

Though subtle, MAPPA did include some anime filler (such as Eren’s, erm, mouth breathing). 51.1% enjoyed the noticeable additions, while 37.4% are completely confused by the question and didn’t realize there were any. A handful generally don’t prefer additions but enjoyed what little ones we had this episode. A small sliver didn’t care for them.

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE SCENES FROM CHAPTER 107 THAT WERE PEPPERED IN BETWEEN THE MOMENTS FROM CHAPTER 106? 139 Responses

MAPPA is shuffling things around to pick up the pacing of this arc, and 48.2% of respondents are feeling very positively about it. 38.8% also feel that both the order of events in the original manga and the anime work out just fine regardless. A couple of smaller groups either felt that things were a bit off from the manga, or didn’t really care either way. 

I think it's great because it allows an episode to start and end on the same chapter if mappa ever wanted it, allowing the right twists or cliffhangers to be in the right episodes, all WITHOUT having to slow down, which I wholly appreciate.

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE CHANGE OF GABI BITING HER NAIL AND ANGRILY SAYING EREN’S NAME IN HER JAIL CELL? 142 Responses

Nearly half of voters feel that both MAPPA’s take and Isayama’s original take work just fine for Gabi’s character. 28.9% prefer the anime’s take on Gabi’s reaction to all that happened, while 14.8% feel that her more defeated posture in the manga makes more sense for her character. 

I'm a mix of both? Her defeated posture implies that she's not happy with the way things worked out with them in jail and Zeke betraying them. On the other hand, her angry face is realistic to the scene too because it implies she really blames Eren for their current predicament.

She looks like some female version of young, angry Tarzan. This time Mappa should have kept the original postures, because the defeated Gabi feels to be more realistic, than the crazy anime one. 

I think they both work but the anime's take might be the anime team beating us over the head that she's just like Eren when he was young.

Exactly 50% felt that while having that JSC characterization would have been very much welcome, they’re okay with that small detail missing from the manga (granted, it was at least acknowledged by one panel being animated). 25.7% have a more nonchalant response, stating that if it helps with the pacing, they’re fine with small cuts like this. 10.7% are just let down by JSC’s lack of characterization in the anime overall and didn’t appreciate even more being taken from their characterization in this episode.

If by "anime" you mean the entirety of it including the past 3 seasons, then option 3. I'm always going to be salty about how much they took out or changed for these three during the uprising arc. So far mappa has done okay with them, I guess. 

Would have been a funny JSC moment, but it was really absolutely pointless. In manga format it works as just background words on a panel. Animating it takes seconds of an episode that could be used elsewhere. So I'm fine with it being cut out.

43.5% were receptive of the anime only shots, but favor the way the scene was portrayed in the manga more. 34.1% felt that both versions were done well, with only 9.4% feeling that the impact was largely the same (if not better). Based on the write-ins, the main complaint seems to be the lighting/color scheme of the scene not quite meeting expectations, or that MAPPA made Eren’s back look weird.

This goes into my criticism of the color palette and shading style mappa uses, which is far more subdued. The contrast is lowered and the scene is very dark, and there is little rim lighting, so while the actual lineart has far more detail, the detail in the lighting is reduced. Damn I really am writing a wall text aren't I? I prefer Wit Studio's art style a lot but Mappa has honestly been doing great so I couldn't care less, manbun Eren is hot.

I prefer the manga version. I think the anime version have weirds shadows in eren's back. Plus the mirror don't have the same energy, less impactful

See, I'm not sure buy I'm also worried and curious about it all. It brings up the question of will the story continue in a possible second half of the season? With the manga ending very soon now, it makes sense to have the story wrap up in its anime medium as well. Fees like there's some kind of uncertainty surrounding this, it's unnerving tbh.

With Nicolo now formally introduced in the anime, we were curious how you felt about his portrayal. Overall the reaction was positive, with 48.6% agreeing that he’s a “cutie pie chef”, and another 45.7% feeling that his design and seiyuu are absolutely great! fantastic!! maybe it's just because this isn't my first time going through this arc anymore, but i feel like the anime feels chronologically less confusing than the manga—I remember being very confused my first time reading these chapters.

The lack of score by Hiroyuki Sawamo is negatively impacting my relationship with the anime. The depth of the emotion that could have been evoked was not present. I also did not get the sense that Nicolo and Sasha were in love, which was a major disappoinment. There were other aspects that weren't so bad, though; specifically, Levi's portrayal and Onyankopon's philosophy.

It felt a bit all over the place, but just seeing things from the manga being animated, I ain’t even mad.

I think that the scene between Sasha and Nicolo was made better in the anime. Isayama has problems with writing romantic moments, so in the manga the whole moment looked like it was taken from some light romance. Mappa made this scene more serene. I liked it. 

I think MAPPA is doing so great tbh! I just need them to hurry up and explain if there will be a part two to this final season or what?! I need to know if we get more anime or they'll diverge into movies or.... just tell us! Lol!

With a 10.1-inch screen, a pack of curated content for children, and secure parental controls, the revised Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids Edition for $ 200 is an attractive prospect for anyone looking to buy a large-screen tablet for a child.

Amazon has made some important and very welcome improvements to the largest tablet of its child-friendly family. It offers faster performance, longer battery life, USB-C charging and a new child-resistant case with a practical stand. The Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids Edition for $ 130 is my current selection of the best tablets for kids, while Apple's cheapest iPad for $ 330 is ideal for teenagers. So where does the Fire HD 10 Kids Edition fit?

I tested the new Amazon Slate with the help of my seven year old daughter who is a big fan of the Fire HD 8 Kids Edition.

A child-proof Fire HD 10

There's a black Amazon Fire HD 10 in the chunky foam sleeve that comes with the Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids Edition. The regular version costs $ 150 and is as simple as tablets, with a matte plastic back that fits into the Glass front. The only detail on the back, apart from the Amazon logo, is the camera with a lens. All buttons and ports are at the top when you hold them in portrait orientation. From right to left there is a power switch, a USB-C port for charging, a 3.5mm headphone jack and volume control.

Large frames frame the 10.1-inch screen, which has a front-facing camera. Both the front and rear cameras have a small size of 2 megapixels. The screen has a resolution of 1,920 x 1,200 pixels, which corresponds to a pixel density of 224 pixels per inch, compared to 189 ppi for the Fire HD 8. This is not only the largest screen from Amazon, but also the sharpest, although it is still falling shortly before Apple's entry-level iPad with a 10.2-inch screen with 264 pixels per inch. The Fire HD 10 screen is bright enough for most situations, but has problems with direct sunlight and doesn't get as bright as the iPad. The overall build quality feels cheap compared to the iPad, but it's a comparatively cheap device that sells for over $ 100 less.

Amazon has updated the chunky case of the Fire HD 10 Kids Edition. There used to be an old-fashioned choice of blue or pink, now you have the option of purple. On the back is a practical new stand that is ideal for supporting the tablet in landscape format to watch movies. It is a case with large bumpers and sufficient coverage in all directions to protect the tablet from damage. There are also openings that redirect the sound from the lower speakers to the front. The child-resistant case is well designed and makes it very easy for small hands to manage and store this large tablet safely.

A world of age-appropriate content

In addition, the main reason for the $ 50 price increase was the year of FreeTime Unlimited (Fire for Kids Unlimited in the UK), a subscription service that typically costs $ 3 a month or $ 5 for Prime members the Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids Edition per month for non-members. It's a well-designed package of content, including TV shows, movies, books, apps, games, and music. When you set up the tablet and create a profile for your child, you also choose an age range that determines what content is provided. If you'd like to manage who your kids are exposed to, Amazon's suggestions may not be for you. There are also certain games and apps that require an internet connection. However, you have the option to download videos, which is great for road trips. You can also add any content you bought from Amazon through your family library.

Amazon has made some important and very welcome improvements to the largest tablet of its child-friendly family.

Amazon suggests that its content be between three and twelve years. But while my seven-year-old daughter likes to use the Fire Tablet every day, my ten-year-old son has lost interest. Keep in mind that you can extend the lifespan by removing the case and creating a regular profile that essentially turns into a normal Fire HD 10. Adults can also use it this way when the kids are in bed if they want to.

Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids Edition is tied to the Amazon ecosystem, so you can only access content that is available through Amazon. That's a lot of content, but there are some apps and games that you can get from the Google Play Store that just aren't in the smaller Amazon App Store.

While Fire OS's simplified user interface is easy to use, Amazon's software can sometimes be unreliable and cannot be compared to the smooth reliability of Apple's iPadOS. There have been some issues recovering a backup, and Amazon's app suite is basic compared to Google.

Solid parental controls

A major strength of the Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids Edition is the child lock, with which you can set broad age groups or dig deeper and finer what your children can and cannot do. The age filter can be set to an age range so you can decide what is okay for your children. For example, my seven-year-old has access to content between the ages of five and nine.

It's easy to plan downtime so the tablet can't be used at night and you can set general time limits. If you want to differentiate based on activity, you can set screen timeouts for different types of content. You may not want them to play apps or games for more than an hour a day, but you may want them to read longer. It is an estimated optimization. You can even set goals, e.g. For example, you can read half an hour a day, and you can choose to achieve educational goals before you can access entertainment such as video and games. There is a lot of potential control here for parents who want it.

You can also specify whether you can use the camera and, if so, whether your photos and videos should be backed up online or not. Amazon has also improved its controls for surfing the Internet. So if you activate the web browser, it can only access age-appropriate websites and videos. You can add certain websites and videos if you want, and you can check your child's web browser history. In fact, all of the content your children access can be checked by parents in the parent dashboard, either on the tablet or by logging into the Amazon website on any device.

While Amazon has the edge in providing robust child safety devices, Google and Apple Family are catching up with Link and Screen Time.

Better performance and more performance

Amazon has made some small but important improvements to the Amazon Fire HD 10 silicon. The new processor is 30% faster than the old one and has 2 GB of RAM. When switching from Fire HD 8, my daughter noticed that loading was faster and general navigation is noticeably faster. This makes a big difference, especially when the tablet is full and begins to age. I had to reset our Fire HD 8 tablets to factory settings several times due to instability or performance issues.

The tablet offers a battery life of up to 12 hours. For comparison: Fire HD 8 and iPad offer around 10 hours. I am also pleased that Amazon switched to USB-C to enable faster charging. With the included charger, it takes four hours for the juice to rise from zero to 100%. However, if you have a faster USB-C charger lying around, you can save an hour less. Since the USB-C cable is always the right way round, it is also much easier for children to connect senselessly. In the past we had problems with defective micro USB connections.

In terms of storage, 32GB or 64GB are offered integrated, and you can increase this with a microSD card.

Price, availability and warranty information

The Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids Edition costs directly from $ 200 Amazon. It comes with a special two-year, worry-free guarantee. Even if your child drops it and breaks it repeatedly, Amazon will replace or repair the tablet, provided you send the broken device back. The only thing you are not insured for is theft or loss.

Our opinion

At $ 200, the Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids Edition is a compelling package that meets all the criteria for a children's tablet. There's a big screen, great casing, long battery life, and a plethora of age-appropriate content that can be easily managed through parental controls.

Is there a better alternative?

While this is the best performance in the Amazon product line in terms of computing power, it doesn't come close to the silky smooth performance you get on the iPad. There's no doubt that a $ 330 iPad charged with Apple Arcade for $ 5 a month offers more content and a higher quality experience. However, this will cost you at least twice the cost of the Amazon tablet, and it would cost you a lot more to top it up with a comparable library of age-appropriate films, TV shows, and books.

You could save $ 70 and opt for the similar Fire HD 8, or save $ 50 with the regular Amazon Fire HD 10 for $ 150, but you'd do without USB-C, a bigger, sharper screen, and you would have to accept slower performance and less endurance. However, the Fire HD 8 is still a great children's tablet and I think it offers better value for money. You can buy Amazon Fire 7 in a Kids Edition for $ 100, but there are many tradeoffs. So it's worth spending the extra $ 30 on HD 8. Amazon often discounts its own devices for events like Black Friday. So keep an eye on deals for the Fire Tablet range.

If you're not a Prime member, it may be better to load parental controls on a regular Android tablet.

How long it will take?

Children can be tough, but this worry-free Amazon warranty means that you should benefit from your Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids Edition for at least two years. If they grow out, you can always use it again by removing the case and creating a new profile to convert it to a normal Fire HD 10.

Should you buy it

Yes. If you want a larger tablet for a small child, there is nothing better at this price.

The Diablo influence is clear in this ARPG newcomer, but the packaing is a bit more light-hearted. Set in the 'paperverse', your character and the world are rendered as paper-people, wonderfully illustrated, and not as fragile as one might think. The dungeons are procedurally generated and loot comes in the form of item cards that you can find and equip, even mid-battle if you feel like you've chosen the wrong thing.

You start off as a warrior, but you can also unlock the Rogue and a Wizard as well. It can feel a little repetitive and automated at times, but thoughtful design decisions help to maintain interest. Each character has their own signature cards and three levels of difficulty the game certainly warrants replaying even after completing your first eight-hour run through. Barbearian

Developer: Kimmo Lahtinen Platform: iOS Universal Price: $8.99

2018 has seen the release of a couple games that have earned a place on this list and Barbearian is foremost among them. Barbearian features frenetic fights against death-defying odds, a combat style that is very reminiscent of Diablo III. You charge into and through huge hordes of enemies and send their lifeless bodies flying in every direction. These fast-paced battles are about where the similarities end. The game follows a story but is driven by its action and does not have the quest lines associated with standard RPGs. Nevertheless, it's a heck-of-a-lot-of fun and I got over fifteen hours of entertainment out of completing all of the content. I gave it five stars in my review and recommend you check it out for a lot more on why Barbearian is great. 

Battleheart 2

Developer: Mika Mobile Platform: iOS Universal and Android Price: $3.99

Also new this year, Battleheart 2 picks up where the original Battleheart game left off seven years ago. It features real-time combat where you control up to four characters, chosen from a variety of options, in a series of battles to gain loot and experience. As you level up you unlock new skills and talents to enhance those skills. There's also a variety of gear and four different slots in which to equip it. This creates some opportunity for Diablo-like min-maxing. Battleheart 2, unlike its predecessor, offers a co-operative mode for up to four players along with an Arena mode where you face down wave after wave of enemies to see how far you can get.

This is simplified version of Diablo III's rift system. An unintentional game mode has also arisen: AFK (away from keyboard) Arena. Astute min-maxers have realized that Cyrus, the necromancer, raises skeletons from the dead that automatically lock onto and attack the nearest enemy without any player intervention. An optimized Cyrus can go deep into the Arena without any help from the player. If that doesn't speak to the spirit of Diablo III, I'm not sure what does. 

Crashlands 

Developer: Butterscotch Shenanigans Platform: iOS Universal and Android Price: $6.99

Crashlands is a survive/craft/explore game where you play as an intergalactic UPS driver who crashed on an alien world. You must figure out how to survive and get yourself, and your precious packages, off the planet and on your way. What does Crashlands have to do with Diablo? It's the combat and gear. Pretty much everything you come across is looking to kill you and it is best to wheel around and shake and bake, all the while attacking with your homemade arsenal of weaponry. Even more similar is the game's surprisingly expansive gear system. Flux, the game's main character, rocks a primary weapon, four secondary devices (bombs, flamethrowers, freeze rays, that kind of thing), four trinkets that provide various bonuses, and four armor pieces.

All of this equipment provides bonuses to damage, critical hits, move speed and more along with providing special abilities like life drain, stunning your target, and a whole lot more. She also has the power of Juicemancy at her disposal, which allows you to optimize your gear by upgrading it and rerolling stats until you get the stats you want. Crashlands is a fantastic game and merges the exploration and crafting of Minecraft with the combat and gear optimization of Diablo III. 

Titan Quest

Developer: Dot Emu Platform: iOS Universal and Android Price: $6.99

For those looking for the traditional RPG quests and storyline, Titan Quest is the most Diablo-like you can get on a tablet. It started on the PC as an attempt to replicate the success of Diablo II and was later ported to iOS and Android. Set in the ancient, pre-Roman world it also has solid loot acquisition—there are over 1200 items which can be enhanced with runes. There are also diverse skill trees, called masteries, from which you pick two. The masteries essentially decide your class and provide some great variation, customizability, and high replay value to the game. The mobile version of the game has had plenty of issues—including frame rate and saved game issues—but it is still one of the better Diablo-like titles.

Bastion

Developer: Supergiant Games Platform: iOS Universal Price: $4.99

Action RPGs are frequently known less for story and ambiance than, well, the action. Bastion, the debut title from Supergiant Games, is different. Bastion’s story—set after the Calamity, a devastating event that shattered the city of Caelondia—is amazing. You play as the Kid; a survivor skilled in the ways of the new, violent world. The Kid meets a man named Rucks who directs efforts to collect the cores that once fuelled Caelondia and rebuild a bit of what was lost. Rucks also serves as the game’s outstanding narrator, who gives both play-by-play and color commentary on the Kid’s every action and every mistake. Bastion’s soundtrack is perfect, and its graphics are still impressive after all these years. The action is fast-paced and chaotic very much like the Diablo games. There are various weapons from which to choose, though gear plays a smaller role in Bastion. This is definitely the game for you if you value the action and production values of Diablo over its loot and min/maxability. 

Rogue Wizards

Developer: Spellbind Studios Platform: iOS Universal Price: Free ($5 Gem Drops x 2 IAP recommended)

If you're looking for dungeon-delving action and gear optimization of Diablo III without the real-time pressure, Rogue Wizards is the perfect game for you. It features a great deal of variation in gear and slots in which to equip it, a town with upgradeable shops from which to buy and sell, and even a Treasure Goblin. Rogue Wizards feature a strong storyline, but the turn-based combat is king. Once you've completed the quests, there's still plenty to do in the game's Gauntlet mode, a high-score chasing dungeon where you see just how far you can go.

The game is free-to-play and the monetization is easy to ignore if so desired, though I recommend the "Gem Drops x 2" IAP which brings progression in line with the premium Steam version. Eternium

Developer: Making Fun, Inc. Platform: iOS Universal and Android Price: Free (with IAP)

One of the closest games to Diablo III on mobile is Eternium. You play as an adventurer—a mage, warrior, or bounty hunter—on a quest to stop Ragadam, an ancient evil, from bringing an apocalyptic plan to fruition. The adventure hops between multiple planets in the universe and you’ll face dragons, aliens and more deadly creatures. You collect companions as you go to help you face the increasingly dangerous foes in your path. Both you and your companions will gain new and varied powers as you level, which you cast by drawing symbols on the battlefield. 

Gear is a huge consideration in Eternium, and there is a ton of it. As in Diablo, you can equip something on nearly every major body part and each piece of gear has several attributes that enhance your abilities. The game also features gems, which can be combined into even better gems and slotted into items for bonuses. Eternium even duplicates Diablo’s features that allow you to add sockets to equipment that doesn’t have it, collect sets of gear, and reroll an attribute for an item.

Eternium is a free-to-play game and uses gems as its primary currency. The game is well balanced, you don’t need to buy gems in order to play but can do so to unlock certain quality-of-life options faster. I spent $5 to get an additional companion slot earlier and more character storage space, for example. You can watch optional ads for more gems and there is a setting to turn them off entirely for those who want to avoid the temptation.

The campaign is extensive and Eternium also includes a series of special “trials”, think rifts from Diablo. Gameplay is good but nowhere near as great as Blizzard's series. That’s a high bar to clear, however, and Eternium will definitely scratch the itch on your mobile device.

Audio Physic Step Plus Loudspeaker Review

The Audio Physic Step plus is designed to apply high-end speaker technology to a desktop speaker that might be used in a smaller room.

The Audio Physic Step plus combines this well-respected companies’ knowledge of building larger speakers, to offer a transducer designed for a smaller room with not just high-end aspirations, but a true high-end speaker that will satisfy discriminating users. To make it even more compelling, the Step plus has high end sound from a desktop sized loudspeaker.

As suggested by the manufacturer, I placed a pair of Audio Physic Step plus speakers in two of my smaller rooms for testing; a bedroom and my small home theater which resides in a converted guest bedroom. The results were superb, with rock solid imaging, sparkling high frequencies, and solid mid bass. They don’t produce the deepest bass notes, but they are very clean down to 40-50 hz as determined by test tones and a sound level meter.

Imported and distributed by Vana Ltd. of Lake Grove, NY, Audio Physic is a well-regarded German manufacturer of high quality speakers. The Cardeas 30 tower speaker is the pinnacle of the company’s current line-up and it receives consistently glowing reviews. Audio Physic uses the technology from its best speakers trickled down to the Audio Physic Step plus, with the same high frequency driver designed for the Cardeas 30.

I’ve often read about Audio Physic speakers, so I was happy to try these diminutive speakers in my listening environment.

Audio Physic wants to fill a niche so that an astute and demanding listener doesn’t have to give up high-end sound in rooms where their main music system would be impractical. I’ve experienced this first hand, where I could not find a high-quality speaker for my bedroom, where I do a lot of listening. I have a bay window with a lovely view of the Arizona mountains in my bedroom, but for years I had an old pair of mediocre speakers being driven by an old receiver. The Audio Physic Step plus speakers are perfect for such a situation, and I was anxious to compare these speakers to what I eventually bought for the bedroom, KEF LS 50 speakers driven by a Denon receiver. The KEFs are almost half the price of the Audio Physic speakers, yet the KEFs are also highly regarded and I’ve been quite pleased with them in that space.

Design

The speakers arrived in a well-designed and protected box, in fact it was one of the best shipping containers I have seen.

Inside is a comprehensive user manual in a protective plastic folder. The manual is especially good in dealing with setup options, and warning users away from bookshelf placement which would adversely change the sound. Audio Physics also includes a level to make sure the speakers are vertical in your home setup.

The review samples I’ve received have a glossy black finish. They are also available in white, cherry, ebony and walnut.

The speakers are small by high-end standards at just over a foot high, and slightly under 7 inches wide. They are hefty speakers, due to the weight of the speaker magnets and the robust internal bracing. Knock on the side of the speaker and there are no resonances to be heard.

The Step plus speakers are a two-way design. The speaker also features what Audio Physic calls Active Cone Damping. Active Cone Damping (ACD) was first developed and implemented by Audio Physic to avoid resonances associated with metal cones. A silicone/rubber ring is mounted on the outer ring of the cone where it directly applies pressure on the cone. This is claimed to be a highly effective means to eliminating the otherwise unavoidable ringing and therefore removes the metallic sound.

The Audio Physic Step plus speakers are designed for stand mounting, the speakers tip slightly back, a design decision to balance out phase differences between the low/mid and high range drivers in this two-way design. Mounted flush to the front panel, the drivers were exposed in the review sample I was sent. The retail version of the speakers does come with a grille cloth. Some people prefer to have no grilles on the speakers to provide a slightly more coherent sound field. Other innovations are provided by the re-engineered crossover with its painstakingly selected components.

The interior wiring, as well as the high-quality WBT control terminal, mechanically decoupled from the cabinet, are also part of the tonal coordination. While these are all small incremental design steps, the creators of these speakers believe that little decision add up to better sound output.

On the rear of each speaker is a bass port, as well as speaker terminals that support banana connectors or spade lugs. The connectors are high quality and when using spade lug connections, a torque indicator responds with a click to let you know things are tightened correctly. It’s a nice design touch, and something I wish all speakers included. For my tests I used the pre-installed banana plugs. With Audio Physic encouraging me to place the speakers on stands for the best sound, I auditioned them on stands I had available. In my bedroom however, I placed the speakers on a long low cabinet.

Audio Physic recommends the speakers be at least 20 inches from a rear wall, and I complied with those suggestions in both rooms. On stands though, I moved the speakers even further from the rear wall, almost 2 feet. I also toed-in each speaker slightly as advised in the manual, and listened to the speakers at ear height.

I used a Denon receiver in the bedroom, and drove them with an Emotiva amp in my small home theater. The Denon offers 75 watts with two channels driven while the Emotiva offers more than 80 watts per channel, so plenty of power for these speakers.

In Use

So, did all the small details and build quality make a difference in actually listening to music? In a word, yes. These speakers sounded almost magical in both my listening rooms.

The first thing I noticed was the imaging. The speakers were never a point source, and simply created a realistic horizontal image of an orchestra, rock group, or jazz ensemble. It was quite uncanny. I explored bringing the speakers out to different distances from the wall in both rooms. As I moved the speakers from 20 inches to 2 feet the soundstage added depth, but even at the lesser distance, the speakers created a very lifelike stereo presentation.

I experimented with moving my listening chair around a bit, and when I moved closer to the speakers, less than 3 feet, I was surprised how well the image held up. Many speakers just fail at creating a coherent audio image when you get too close. I also noted that I could drift off the center line quite a bit, and still hear a balanced presentation. In fact, sitting almost directly in front of the right speaker, I could still hear a solid stereo image with no beaming of highs from the right channel. These are marks of an excellent speaker and how it interacts with my rooms.

Think of sitting far to the left or right at a live concert and the instruments still sound well balanced. That’s what is happening here with the Audio Physic Step plus speakers.

As I previously noted, the Step plus speakers are not the speakers for bass heads. In both rooms, I added a small subwoofer, a Klipsch wireless sub, (an R10SWi) that I use with my KEF LS50s, and it gave me a deeper bass than the speakers can create on their own. The Klipsch is not a high-end sub, but it’s a good match for my bedroom-based KEF’s. Audio Physic also makes a very high-quality subwoofer, but it wasn’t part of the offered review package. Having said all that, I thought the Step plus speakers sounded fine on most music without augmenting the bass. In fact, they sounded a great deal more than fine. This is particularly noteworthy with such a small woofer-midrange of 5.9 inches in diameter. There was solid output to 50 hz, and audible output to about 40 hz.

Joe Hisaishi “Budokan:”

Joe Hisaishi in Budokan: This is a Blu-ray disc of a 2008 concert celebrating the composer’s film music in Tokyo. While the disc can provide a 5.1 mix, I listened to the 2.0 stereo mix on the Step plus speakers. This is just a great live concert. I think you must import the disk, but it is region free. There’s more than a thousand people in the orchestra and chorus, and the sound is breathtaking. The Audio Physic speakers capably negotiated the native drums and high strings, always providing a stable image. Massed choruses are a real test for a speaker too, and individual voices never got lost or distorted.

Flint Juventino Beppe “Remote Galaxy:”

Remote Galaxy: A lovely Blu-ray audio disc by composer Flint Juventino Beppe. He makes a successful run at creating a musical journey through time and space. The music on the disc works the ends of the frequency spectrum, and the Step plus speakers render this unique music beautifully.

Keith Jarrett “Creation”

Keith Jarrett: Creation. More lovely music from the Audio Physic Step plus speakers. I often use piano music because it is notoriously hard to get right. We all know what piano sounds like, but many speakers make a hash of the piano, sounding “electronic” and not acoustic (assuming the recording is of an acoustic piano!). I cranked up the Audio Physic Step plus speakers to a room filling volume, and the piano sounded like it was in the room with me. A very convincing presentation.

Daft Punk “Tron: Legacy”

Tron Legacy: Another great disc for testing speakers with mostly electronic music. The track ‘Disk Wars’ is a particularly good test of the low end. Here the speakers did their best with my subwoofer adding to the deepest octaves of bass.

Conclusions

THE AUDIO PHYSIC STEP PLUS is high-cost, I’d consider it high value – the speaker offers accurate sound and exact imaging. For many, the money is well spent.

The Audio Physic Step plus speakers can’t be confused with bookshelf speakers for a bedroom or small listening room. They are high-end speakers in a very compact size that outperform many speakers in their size class. I love my KEF LS50 speakers, but these Step plus speakers are incrementally better at creating a real soundstage, if they get the proper placement in terms of height and distance from a wall. I didn’t go with speaker stands in my bedroom, but the speakers sounded great at ear level on a credenza that also supports a TV.

I think many listeners will be fine with the speakers as they sound out of the box. Some will prefer some bass augmentation. I believe the speakers were more to my taste with a subwoofer, but you likely won’t have to break the bank to find a subwoofer that integrates well with the Audio Physic Step plus speakers. I thought my 10” powered Klipsch did just fine.

Audio Physic does offer a larger version of this speaker with a bass driver called the Temp plus. It should have similar sound but reach more deeply into the low end.

These are not inexpensive speakers by any means, selling for $ 2799.00, but the quality of construction and components are high end, not just high-end pretense. Their pedigree from Audio Physic means a great deal of hard work and artistry went into their design, and it was reflected every time I listened to them.

I was sad to pack them up and see them go. If you have the kind of smaller room for which these speakers were designed, they are certainly worthy of serious consideration.
