God this post is always a mess whenever I see it
I think an important part of the "D&D is easy to learn" argument is that a lot of those people don't actually know how to play D&D. They know they need to roll a d20 and add some numbers and sometimes they need to roll another type of die for damage. A part of it is the culture of basically fucking around and letting the GM sort it out. Players don't actually feel the need to learn the rules.
Now I don't think the above actually counts as knowing the rules. D&D is a relatively crunchy game that actually rewards system mastery and actually learning how to play D&D well, as in to make mechanically informed tactical decisions and utilizing the mechanics to your advantage, is actually a skill that needs to be learned and cultivated. None of that is to say that you need to be a perfectly tuned CharOp machine to know how to play D&D. But to actually start to make the sorts of decisions D&D as a game rewards you kind of need to know the rules.
And like, a lot of people don't seem to know the rules. They know how to play D&D in the most abstract sense of knowing that they need to say things and sometimes the person scowling at them from behind the screen will ask them to roll a die. But that's hardly engaging with the mechanics of the game, like the actual game part.
And to paraphrase @prokopetz this also contributes to the impression that other games are hard to learn: because a lot of other games don't have the same culture of play of D&D so like instead of letting new players coast by with a shallow understanding of the rules and letting the GM do all the work, they ask players to start making mechanically informed decisions right away. Sure, it can suck for onboarding, but learning from your mistakes can often be a great way to learn.
#also the assumption that the DM will help you with the rules is supposed to for new players#the assumption is that youâll learn them on your own but a practical demonstration helps you pick up some mechanics#you donât expect the brand new player to have mastered the system and be good at utilizing the mechanics#but if youâve been playing a couple months and you donât know how your character works your doing a disservice to yourself#and everyone you play with

Rules of your reality
Ok, guys I just spent the last 30 mins on this post then Tumblr glitched so here we go again...
If you've been on LOA Tumblr long enough you know that we are God and the creator of our reality. So I was doing some thinking and thought about the commandments in the bible. God gave these commandments to his people so that they could follow him. So I was thinking since we are gods How about we make our own rules or commandments. These commandments are to help us keep our assumptions in check.
Manifesting is supposed to be easy so let's make our rules easy. If you spend a lot of time On LOA Tumblr and you read a success story you're more inclined to do exactly what that person did to their desire. The problem with this is, everyone's different and what works for them possibly won't feel right or natural.
Before making our rules I'm going to ask you to take a deep breath and close your eyes. If I told you right now to manifest your favorite food what would your thoughts go to? What is your reaction? Do you straight to your favorite manifestation blogger and ask questions. Do you start crazy affirming, scripting, Visualizing? do feel the NEED to do these things? If that's the case you've already set these limiting belief rules for yourself so now it's time to flip them.
ok let's say for example your favorite method is scripting:
Your rule: I only need to script to get my desire no matter what.
So basically like an assumption
This method can help people "struggling" making assumptions
Something you also need to remember is that since it's a commandment it cannot change your desires are set in stone just like the biblical commandments. So after scripting your mindset shouldn't change.
Your assumption is just now your rules and since your god, EVERYONE has to abide and follow your rules or commandments.
YOU ARE GOD you make the rules here. Whether the rules help you or not.
(I'm going to do some editing to this post this is not the final version cuz it's kinda bad i just really wanted to get a post out this is kinda confusing and I'm still in school so ill prolly be taking this down anyways)
Pls dm if you have any more questions :)

Hey, in honor of A.C.E. coming back soon would you mind talking about their outfits and makeup in their Favorite Boy comeback (or really any of their outfits/make up cause their stylists is a god and deserves a kiss on the forehead)? They have some of my favorite styling of any boy group currently. Undercover Byeongkwan in the black and yellow crop top with the pony tail lives in my mind rent free and Iâm not complaining. I especially loved the mesh of modern and traditional in Fav Boys.
yes!!!! ok be prepared people this is basically a love letter to a.c.e's stylist, whoever you are please my dms are open i just wanna talk (and maybe also get married, your choice)
(also this is really long because there's a lot of pictures, so sue me)
ok there's three main things i want to touch on here that are all contributing factors in a.c.e aesthetics hitting every time: colour theory, silhouette, and pattern matching. alright let's go!
colour theory
so i won't explain all of colour theory because iâm not as good as i should be with the actual theory, but hereâs the basics. colours are divided into groups: primary, secondary, and tertiary. hereâs a fun diagram i stole from google:
in centre you have the primary colours (red/blue/yellow), then you have the secondary colours, made from mixing the primary colours (orange/green/violet), and then the tertiary colours are made from mixing the primary and secondary colours (yellow orange/red orange/red violet/blue violet/blue green/yellow green). there are some commonly associated schemes that are known to âlook goodâ to the human eye:
complementary, where you pair two colours directly opposite each other on the wheel (red/green, blue/orange, purple/yellow)
analogous, which is a base colour with accents from the colours directly next to it (red base, orange/violet accent),
triadic - either base colour with accent colours equidistant from it (green/orange/violet), or base colour with split complementary (violet base, yellow green/yellow orange accent)
tetradic - this is essentially a combination of two or more of the previous, usually a double complementary or an analogous triad with a complimentary accent (red/green with red violet/yellow green, orange/blue with yellow orange/blue violet)
now thereâs a lot more getting into tone, value, and saturation, but these are the basic hue combinations that we most commonly see. kpop styling sometimes veers wildly from these rules, but they arenât hard and fast so it usually isnât a big deal. plus a lot of styling is supposed to be a bit visually overwhelming anyways, so iâm not exactly counting it against anyone. but what makes a.c.eâs styling look so nice, even though it often isnât that complicated, is that they always stick to a specific palette. like i went all the way back through their instagram and ALL their public appearances are coordinated:
even their dance practice videos, of all things!
this is especially true with their performance costumes:
i'm not saying anything really revolutionary here, most groups get colour matching down correctly, but a.c.e's stylists have really nailed down matching the tone and saturation as well as the hue. here's a couple of examples from concept photos:
complementary - full saturation green base, desaturated red (pink) as accent
analogous - full saturation violet, pink, and magenta with desaturated and black accents
triadic - all desaturated
complementary - full saturation red base, varying degrees of desaturation for accent colours
this is fun, let's do some more! this time from their performance costumes:
analogous (monochrome) - full saturation yellow green, desaturated accents
tetradic (analogous with complementary accent) - full saturation red, desaturated violet/red/blue, desaturated green as accent)
triadic (equidistant) - full saturation red/blue with desaturated yellow, desaturated accents
tetradic (double complementary) - full saturation red/green as main pair, desaturated blue/orange as secondary pair, full saturation yellow as accents
starting to see it? you can do this with pretty much any of their styling; i've watched a lot of their performances and i don't think i've seen a single one that didn't follow a really strict colour palette. (ok there were like two savage stages that were not quite as good, but you can tell the stylist was trying to bring them in line with the current 4th gen styling and it didn't work so it didn't last).
costume colours and lighting
this is an important aside in relation to the mvs. whoever edits their mvs is really good at colouring. a big part of colour theory is tone, which is how 'warm' or 'cool' a colour is. it's super important in lighting; the colour wheel is split in half, with yellow through red-red violet categorized as warm, and yellow green through blue and violet as cool. a really easy way to visualize this in lighting is through the light from different types of lightbulbs: led lights are cool toned (they are often slightly bluish), and old style halogen lights are warm toned (they are amber tinged). tones are a thing that kpop videos seem to have a fleeting relationship with; sometimes they're used effectively and sometimes they are not. a big thing that a lot of kpop mvs do is really quickly switch tones in colouring, without connecting the intentions of the colours. here's some examples: ateez's fireworks mv, and oneus' no diggity mv. the fireworks mv has this really weird desaturated balance between warm and cool tones specifically in the interior shots, where they somehow managed to overblow both at the same time, which ends up making it look like they were trying really hard to make a cool tone yellow. you can actually feel your eyes relax in that first shot that takes them outside, because the balance is much more natural. and the no diggity mv.... i love it but it's so chaotic. everything is on high saturation all the time and there's no real limitation on the palette, established connection between colours or arc in the colour story, so the cuts between colours and shots feel more random than intentional. now lets look at some a.c.e mvs in comparision, first: undercover. for starters there's an immediate establishement of red and white/black, with a mild green accent. then it continues to a stronger green/teal, with brown as an extension of red (same undertone). there's a colour shift at the first chorus, where they are in the analogous full saturation violet/pink outfits that i mentioned previously, but they actually desaturate and de-value the hues with edit in order to have it match the tone of the room. the second colour shift is for the second rap break, with byeongkwan and wow in yellow main on black and white backgrounds, but that same level of yellow saturation only appears at the rap break specifically, it's absent from the rest of the mv. and then there's a third colour shift on the last chorus, where they pump up the blue and magenta in order to emphasize the climax of the song.
second, for something a bit crazier: goblin. it follows almost the same pattern as undercover; starting with a strong establishment of red/white/black, but then it jumps into full saturation green and teal as the other main colours. again there's a colour switch at byeongkwan's second rap break, and after than we start to see that deeper saturation blue and pink/purple more, but the main colours are still red/white/black.
ok that's enough about colour, now let's talk about
silhouette
this is maybe a little bit more vague and difficult to describe, but whatever. silhouette is pretty much exactly the way it sounds, it's the overall shape of the body. clothing and body type play equal roles in how silhouette is perceived, but clothing can do a lot to either disguise or transform the body. now there isn't really that much variation in body type in kpop; it's a microcosm of small differences between a lot of very fit people, which has been normalized as "default" by society at large for the last while. i'm not going to get into body politics here, because we all know that kpop dudes are not the median average male body type, but they are for the sake of what we've been socialized to think of as looking attractive so the rest of this is going to operate from that assumption. and when you have five dudes who are pretty smack in the middle of that slight variation (none of them are the largest nor the thinnest, they're all about the same middling height), you've got pretty much free reign to put them in whatever you want and they'll still look hot. kpop styling has a dubious relationship to actual wearable clothing, but it is all costuming so it's not necessary for it to be wearable everyday clothing. but since view in 2015 there's been a dramatic increase in "normal" clothing as performance costume, and the thing about normal contemporary clothing is that it's actually very difficult to style in a convincing way. because it's the trends that the general public is the most familiar with, it's the easiest for them to pick apart where the flaws are. this is all preface to say that there are often common silhouettes that are popular with specific trends. in 2012-2013 there was that sweater tucked into circle skirt with big scarf trend, in the 2007 was like baggy everything and layered tshirts, etc, and 2018-2019 was big colourful patterned shirts. sound familiar? it should, take me higher came out in summer 2018! now there's a debate here (like with most pop culture and celebrity) whether or not kpop is following trends or setting them, and both points are true, but personally i'm of the opinion that kpop is kind of a median between the two; it's not setting trends because it's often taking directly from the fashion industry and/or other popular culture, but it is popularizing them in a way that said trend may not have otherwise. there's a lot of digressions in this section but i'm hoping this will help you see my point.
using take me higher as a specific example, you can clearly see that a.c.e is sticking to a specific silhouette within the group, which is a boxy/loose upper with a fitted lower. which you can see really clearly in this stage, this stage, this stage, this stage, and honestly pretty much every stage for this comeback. sometimes they'll have a slight variation where one of them is wearing a longer shirt, but otherwise it's pretty consistent. this is actually a really common silhouette for them, because it puts emphasis on their specific style of choreo, which is fast footwork. you can see it to the extreme in their main cactus styling, which goes the whole nine yards, fully making their legs the focus and going so far as to embellish them:
this silhouette also shows up for callin', where they're wearing boxy hip cut bomber jackets, and for the majority of the undercover styling, which is cropper military(ish) jackets. and it's shaping up to be similar for higher, so i'll talk more about it when i get there.
they have a consistant look for the goblin stages too, which is hanbok over a tight fitted underlayer. each of their hanbok are different cuts, which you can see with wow's cropped jacket and skirt combo, but it makes the same shape as the others. and in the goblin mv, most of their looks take a traditional silhouette and pair it with modern fabrics and patterns, and combining modern accessories with modernized traditional ones.
sticking to an internal silhouette is not the common mode for most boy group stylings at the moment. there's usually an adhesion to a specific colour scheme, but i have not noticed the same kind of care taken to silhouette. there's usually an adhesion to a member specific shape, but the general shape of the group is not usually as considered. you can see it in ateez's fireworks styling (yes i'm going to use it again, the styling was very weird and i never really talked about how weird it is). in the intro you've got tight pants, loose pants, short jackets, suit jackets, AND a long jacket. and then it's the same kind of variety in the rest of their outfits. if anyhting i'd say the emphasis was meant to be on shoulders, because of the point choreo; and yunho, hongjoong, san, and wooyoung all have some kind of shoulder padding, but that's only half the group. and the stage outfits are not any better. there's the infamous ketchup packet outfit, this naruto themed styling, this inexplicable bdsm football themed styling, and whatever this snakeskin theme is meant to be. it's all over the place! there's some performer specific shapes (hongjoong with the shoulder pads and hip length jacket, san with crop top, yeosang sleeveless) but if you were to just look at the shape of the outfits regardless of colour and pattern, you'd have no way to tell if they were all in the same group.
ok now lastly, let's quickly talk about
pattern matching and texture
this section won't be as long, but i wanted to cover it because even though it's a small and subtle thing, it does a lot in the visual long run. the general rule with patterns is that you don't combine patterns of the same size. this is kind of hard to explain without a visual reference so here's a few examples:
(not my photos, these are from scott schuman's blog the sartorialist)
small check, even smaller pinstripe
mid-size print on pant, large print on scarf
small shirt stripe, mid-size print on tie, mid-large print on scarf
small print on zip jacket, mid-size on scarf, large plaid on jacket
like all fashion and like everything else i've talked about here, this isn't a hard and fast rule, but it does generally look the most harmonious. a.c.e really nails this in the take me higher stages, which you can see here:
(in addition to using different pattern sizes, they're using different colours as well to make it less visually busy)
(bonus! see if you can name the type of colour stories!)
the goblin stages utilize a combination of texture and pattern matching, where the hanbok are a mix of different fabrics (raw silk, embroidered satin, organza) with different patterns, overtop plain underlayers, or when they aren't in hanbok their outfits are very heavily embellished to add visual interest, but are unpatterned fabrics.
in conclusion: good and cohesive colour stories, emphasis on uniform silhouettes and variety in patterns and textures. they also are very specific with accessories, and use them to emphasize key features.
ok! i think that's all i want to cover for this post, because this is already so long. but i've started on the write up for higher already, so i might get into some of my points here in more detail because i'll be talking about one specific thing instead of like......all of it.
#ace w#this ended up being mostly about take me higher because everything about the stages for take me higher is SO GOOD#seriously i watched like all of the stages and they all hit#also it's the type of contemporary design that i specialize in so of course it appeals to me#i say as im in the middle of designing a heighted modern styling for a show with a limited colour palette......#the higher writeup might take a few days#but i dont think it's going to be as long as this so hopefully not#a.c.e stylist please dm me i love you#a.c.e#kpop analysis#group analysis#general design questions#kpop questions#answers#text#i didn't say very much about the cactus styling because everything about it is perfect#no notes#10/10

This is actually something that D&D lost at the same time Challenge Rating was introduced - not as a result of the Challenge Rating system itself, but incidentally.
D&D 3.0 was tested as if it were still 2e. The assumption that not all encounters were fights and that evading or fleeing were reasonable options. Even the guidelines for creating adventures assumed about 20% of encounters would be "easy" or "easy if handled properly" which leaves plenty of room for non-combat encounters or hostile creatures that are much simpler to evade than to fight. There's even supposed to be some number of Overwhelming encounters - battles with foes tough enough to consume most of the party's resources where fleeing is almost certainly wise.
Unfortunately, the transition to 3e also jettisonned three rules critical to the way old dungeons worked:
Reaction rolls were removed in favour of DM fiat.
Morale was removed in favour of DM fiat.
The evasion and pursuit rules were gutted, so retreat was effectively impossible in most cases where it would otherwise be advisable.
This, and a glut of modules that ignored the encounter building advice in the DMG to create combat meatgrinders, lead to very different player behavior at the table.
Fleeing is not effective, so everyone fights like cornered rats. Doubling down on losing battles (turning bad fights into TPKs) happens all the time - you are guaranteed to die if you run and might possibly survive by fighting back. Therefore almost every bad fight becomes a TPK. Therefore ensuring encounters are balanced in the party's favour becomes essential in order to avoid TPKs.
None of these problems are solely caused by "challenge rating" or "encounter balance". Implementing morale and reaction rolls would reduce both fights and fights to the death. Implementing retreat mechanics would allow for more variance in the power level of the opposition without guaranteeing a TPK on the top end.
Challenge Rating could even be defined to include the expected value of morale checks. Monsters that are likyvtovflee before dying effectively have fewer HP than those who fight to the death.
And on a a macro level the odds of a particulr creature bring hostile _at all_ could be factored into a game's adventure building advice.
My ideal end result would be that it's possible to design an adventure ( dungeon, floor, etc.) to a small range of party sizes and levels while giving the players some options about how they engage with the module. It can be important to understand whether a given adventure is likely possible for adventurers of a given level - Challenge Rating should be a tool to help achieve that instead of a straightjacket of N Encounters of Level M Each Day.
yk, I think I'm starting to actively dislike challenge rating as a concept.
"here's a monster that's totally cool conceptually. By the way, it's set up specifically to have balanced interactions with only characters of at least a specific level and to be forgettable if you're too far above that level'
giving things a CR diminishes them

Spell Suggestion: Pierce Armor 1
Response to @seriola-lalandiâs suggestions for Pierce Armor
Save = half and no AC reduction. Probably keep AC reduction similar to other spells of the same level, such as slow. In which case the AC reduction should be 2. 5d10 also seems a bit high. Not in a position to do all the math right now to check how it scales but 3d10 sounds about right. additionly it should require concentration if it lasts a short period of time. If you wish it to be permanent -2AC then I'd reduce damage further but not req concentration
Thereâs a lot to unpack here because there are a lot of assumptions within your suggestions. I appreciate what youâre trying to improve, but I donât agree with your suggestions. The suggestions donât take into account the spell as a whole and misses some key points about Pierce Armor.
I appreciate all feedback and suggestions. It helps me figure out what I missed or what I could improve about a spell.Â
There are improvements that I can make because of your suggestions.
Iâll leave my full response under the cut and leave a TL;DR above it. (Itâs a lot regardless.)
TL;DR (In no particular order.)
The spell is meant to target high AC single targets, such as the BBEG. This includes creatures with legendary resistances, which canât resist an attack roll hit. (Unless thereâs a legendary dodge, which your DM can totally do.)
The spell Slow has a lot more effects than just the -2 penalty to AC. Those other affects warrant the concentration required for that spell. Pierce Armor only affects the AC and deals damage to one creature. The minimum AC penalty for Pierce Armor is -2 and itâs maximum is -5 against armored targets.
The damage of Pierce Armor is scaled for 3rd level. Inflict Wounds and Fireball deal similar amounts of damage to one creature at 3rd level. The damage also doesnât increase when cast at higher levels, hence the high damage.
The spell is for Artificers and Rangers only. This is to diversify the AC debuff and give those classes more support spells. Only Wizards and Sorcerers can cast Slow, which is the only AC debuff spell at low levels.
I do plan to improve how long this spell is cast. Currently debating whether or not the spell should directly enchant ammunition and thrown weapons instead of being cast in battle. If I keep the cast in battle idea, Iâll improve the text with the rules from Lightning Arrow.
Pierce Armor is a spell meant to make high AC creatures easier to hit. Itâs a hit once and done. This spell is supposed to be targeting armored creatures with high ACâs specifically. The baseline reduction of a creatureâs AC is -2 for both armored and non-armored creatures. The most you can reduce is -5, which only applies to armored AC creatures. You also have to hit said target with the way the spell works currently. This spell is also supposed to get around legendary resistances, hence the reason for no save.
This is a spell for Lv.9 Artificers and Rangers, classes that donât get that many damage dealing spells. Their spell slots are fairly limited given that theyâre half casters. Making their spell slots extremely valuable. They only have two, 3rd level slots at Lv.9 and at most three at later levels. I believe these classes need more high damage spells and more specialty support spells.
The damage isnât too far off for a high damage 3rd level spell. Inflict wounds cast at 3rd level is 5d10 necrotic damage, which is what this spellâs damage is based on. A wizard can deal 8d6 at 3rd level, which is 48 fire damage at max damage to one creature in the blast. The damage is reasonably scaled in my opinion. A d10 hit die isnât the most reliable hit die in the first place. Pierce Armor also doesnât increase itâs damage at higher levels. The main feature of this spell is the AC reduction, not the damage.
I donât agree with spell being concentration. Slow has a reason to be a concentration spell. The spell affects up to 6 creatures, halves a creatureâs speed, causes a -2 penalty to AC and Dex saves, prevents a creature from using their reaction, and impedes the casting of spells for spellcasters. Pierce Armor only deals high damage and affects the AC of one creature. Thatâs a huge difference.
The focus of this spell is to make high AC creatures easier to hit for everyone in your party. An example would be the BBEG with an AC of 25. Sorcerers and Wizards are the only classes that can cast Slow. Pierce Armor diversifies that AC reduction to the Artificer and Ranger without stealing the other benefits of the Slow spell. Concentration isnât necessary for this focused, yet powerful debuff.
I do agree that there should be a change to this spell. Particularly with how this spell is cast. I might increase the casting time and make the spell more like an enchantment to ammunition and thrown weapons. I could instead steal a chunk of text from the spell Lighting Arrow to preserve how this spell is currently cast. Either way, the spell will be improved.
Thank you for your suggestions.

Protein Intake While Keto: Why It Matters, How Much to Eat, and What My Intake Looks Like Now
If you ask the average person, ketosis is primarily about carb restriction and fat intake. Go on a low-carb diet, eat more fat, allow your body to burn its own reserves. Pretty straightforward. Ketones are supposed to replace glucose.
But what do we make of protein? Some keto dieters avoid it like the plague, worried anything more than a quarter pound of animal flesh will knock them back into sugar-burning purgatory. Some have even likened it to âchocolate cake.â Others eat it freely. Whoâs right?
WellâŠ
The most restrictive therapeutic ketogenic diets, the ones used to treat childhood intractable epilepsy, are very low proteinâaround 5-10% of calories. These diets are designed to maximize ketone production. Any more protein than that and those kids might not make enough ketones to treat their condition.
The most ketogenic state of allâfastingâis also very low in protein. Zero, to be exact.
Okay, so protein can inhibit ketosis. Why? Whatâs going on?
One common assumption is that too much protein converts to glucose via gluconeogenesis. This is the âsteak is just chocolate cakeâ hypothesis. It makes sense and sounds reasonable. Itâs also completely wrong.
It turns out that gluconeogenesis follows an âas neededâ schedule. Our livers donât just mindlessly produce glucose anytime protein reaches a certain threshold. Our livers convert protein into glucose when weâfor whatever reasonâneed more glucose. Demand-driven, not supply-driven. Keto-adapted individuals running over 70% of their brain and most of their muscle on ketones donât demand a whole lot of glucose. Even under âoptimal conditionsââgiving a bunch of adults who just fasted overnight a big dose of radio-labeled protein and then tracking its fate through the bodyâhumans convert very little dietary protein into glucose.
This isnât a real issue.
What Causes Protein To Inhibit Ketosis?
It all starts with the Krebs cycle, that metabolic pathway that converts fatty acids into useable energy. In a ânormalâ cycle, fatty acids are broken down into acetyl-CoA. The liver pairs acetyl-CoA with oxaloacetate to complete the cycle and produce ATP energy. Thatâs basic energy generation.
Without oxaloacetate, the Krebs cycle cannot continue. Without oxaloacetate, acetyl-CoA has a different energetic fate: conversion into ketones. Where does oxaloacetate come from?
Carbs, usually. But protein can also be a source. Like carbohydrates, protein has the potential to donate oxaloacetate during the Krebs cycle. The more protein you eat, the more oxaloacetate youâll have ready and willing to inhibit ketogenesis. This is how protein inhibits ketosis. Not by increasing gluconeogenesis. Not by spiking insulin.
By donating oxaloacetate.
How Much Protein Can You Eat and Still Remain Keto?
It depends on your goals and requirements.
If youâre dealing with serious epilepsy, creeping dementia, general inflammation, or anything else that requires or may improve with deep ketosis, aim for a lower protein content (10-15% of calories). Get those high ketone levels, see how it feels, and see if thatâs the protein intake for you. Start low, really revel in those high ketone readings.
If youâre losing weight (or trying to), eat closer to 15-20%. For you, the ketone readings arenât the biggest focus. How you look, feel, and perform are your main concern. Eating slightly more protein will increase satiety, making âeating lessâ a spontaneous, inadvertent thing that just happens. It will also stave off at least some portion of the lean mass accretion that occurs during weight loss; you want to lose body fat, not muscle.
If youâre trying to gain large amounts of muscle, eat closer to 20-25%.
Why You Shouldnât Over-Restrict Protein
Just donât go below 15% of your calories unless you absolutely need to. Thereâs a bottom. Protein is an incredible essential macronutrient. Fat is plentiful, even when youâre lean. Carbs we can produce from protein, if we really must, or we can just switch over to ketones and fats for the bulk of the energy that would otherwise come from carbs. Protein cannot be made. We have to eat it.
If we stop eating dietary fat, weâll burn what we have on our bodies andâto a pointâget healthier.
If we stop eating carbs, weâll burn through our glycogen stores and then get better at burning fat. And weâll be healthier.
If we stop eating protein, our organs, muscles, and bones will atrophy. Our health will suffer.
Another reason itâs so important (and so satiating) is that protein contains the most micronutrients. Fat-soluble vitamins are great, but the real good stuff we likeâthe B vitamins, the mineralsâcome packaged with protein.
How Iâve Changed My Approach To Protein
I think I need less than I used to think I needed. I eat maybe 80-100 grams a day max now. Some days a fair amount less, some days a fair amount more.
I also donât think about protein meal-to-meal or even day-to-day. I tend to think of protein averages over three- or four-day chunks. If I get 200-250 grams in three days, Iâm good and it doesnât matter when or how I got it.
I know Iâm in protein-sparing mode. We usually think of ketones as glucose-sparing, and they are. Generating (and being able to utilize) enough ketones to replace a large portion of the rare and flighty glucose is an invaluable asset in diseases of dysfunctional brain glucose metabolism like Alzheimerâs. Ketones are also protein-sparing. For one, if we arenât burning through glucose, we donât need any extra.
I make sure to eat a significant amount of collagen. Collagen reduces amino acid requirements. Itâs not enough by itself to stimulate muscle protein synthesis or provide the essential amino acids. It does help balance out muscle meat intake, reduce inflammation, improve sleep, speed up joint and connective tissue healing, and reduce the amount of protein I need to reach my nutritional goals.
Important to note, thoughâŠ
Iâve been doing this fat-adapted thing for a long time. My body is finely tuned to this kind of diet. Itâs what it expects. People who are on week 2.5 of their keto journey might not have the same dynamic and may need more protein.
Keep in mind, too, that Iâm not actively trying to gain muscle mass. The name of the game (for me) is to maintain: my body comp, my physical performance, my organ reserve, my health, my basic functionality. If I got the urge to put on lean muscle, Iâd increase my protein intake.
Final Takeaways For Considering Protein Intake
If you crave protein, you should eat it. Cravings for a natural, relatively unadorned food can usually be trusted.
Know there arenât any hard-and-fast rules about protein and ketosis. Everyoneâs different. âModified ketogenicâ dietsâhigher in carbs and proteinâare still effective against epilepsy. In one study, obese men ate an ad libitum (they ate what and how much they wanted) ketogenic diet consisting of 4% carb, 30% protein, 66% fat. They got into and remained in ketosis and ended up losing more weight with less hunger than another group on a high-carb diet with the same amount of protein.
If youâre going to severely restrict a vital macronutrient like protein, youâd better have a good reason. Youâd better be seeing measurable, obvious benefits that disappear when you eat more protein. Donât wed yourself to the numbers or to the idea of a thing. Always ground your dietary excursions in tangible, verifiable feedbackâboth subjective and objective. Do what works. Donât do what doesnât work, even if itâs âsupposed toâ be working.
As always (especially if youâre using keto to address a medical condition), make sure to consult your doctor.
Now Iâd love to hear from you. How does protein affect your ketogenic diet? Do you even noticeâor consider the questionâin your process?
Take care, everyone.
