Hey! I have been a longtime fan of SHOH and I have recently begun writing my own fantasy story. How do you make your vast and rich cast of characters interact with each other in such a natural and consistent manner? I am really inspired by the way you fleshed out relationship dynamics for so many characters and would love to get some insight into that process.
Ah, thanks for the question, and thank you so much for your long support of ShoH, I really appreciate it! 💖
And hmm, this is a great question! I'm a bit chagrined to say that, at this point, I don't really think about it in the moment or apply a particular conscious methodology when it comes to writing the characters' interactions with each other: most of their dialogue and dynamics spring up naturally and seem to be dictated by the characters themselves, as well as my own long experience and familiarity with them. So in a way, it's sort of a "practice + patience = natural results" process! I start with their individual core personalities and then see how such characteristics might naturally react to each other: someone who's a bit more prickly and fiercely independent and assertive like Ayla might have friction with an authority figure as disciplined and military-minded as Blade, or would have more conflict with other members of her team due to her own natural wariness and past, but it also makes sense that she'd be softer around kind, non-threatening people like Shery or someone as naturally disarming and full of easy camaraderie like Trouble. Sometimes they do surprise me, though! But basically I carve out their most distinct personality traits, or what would be most apparent about them to strangers at a glance--(Chase: loose, playful, enigmatic, chaotic, mischievous, informal. Riel: rigid, highly intelligent, ruthless, orderly, neurotic, sophisticated)--and then I throw them together into different scenarios and observe how they might react to each other. Natural compatibilities or dynamics will start to form from there!
In my earliest days as a writer, one thing that I found really useful was switching up the format when writing and fleshing out the characters. Sometimes it's too much work to try and think of a Plot Reason why they're on a mission together or what other things are happening, like a whole short story about a mystery they're solving or whatever, and organically try to dig into their dynamic that way. If I really wanted to focus on exploring their relationship to each other, I would literally write either short screenplay vignettes as they came to me, devoid of any actual plot (like the two characters in a garden, eating lunch together), or interview/Q&A transcripts, LOL. This was a really good way of developing fast, off-the-cuff dialogue between the characters in a way that can deepen your understanding of their relationship. Like imagine they're just trapped in a room and some journalist or invisible speaker is plying them with questions. Sort of like how I imagine the Shepherds' Corner, where a panel of the characters are being polled for different questions!
(This is stirring up ancient memories for me, actually. In the LiveJournal days of like 2005, there would be tons of those OC number replacement questionnaires floating around, where there'd be 3-5 slots at the top; you'd assign each of your characters a number, and then the questionnaire would proceed to ask them questions, like so:
Blade
Briony
Trouble
Character #3, how much do you weigh?
Trouble: "Oh, uh... I actually have no idea. Nobody ever weighs me except the Healers during my annual exams, and I'm usually in a rush to get out of there as soon as I can, so I never asked..."
Blade: [disbelieving snort] "It's sure to be a lot. You eat for three."
Trouble: "Hey, fuck you?"
Briony: "You do eat a lot, Trouble..."
Maybe it seems a bit silly, but you can see how doing enough of these could allow certain character dynamics to emerge and become clearer: Blade and Trouble have a relationship where they take the piss out of each other, Briony is a more moderating influence but is still honest in a group setting (whereas she might be more diplomatic one-on-one LOL), and etc...)
Making character webs like this might also prove helpful!
Finally, one last thing to note is the form and medium that you're writing in. A rule that was often pushed in creative writing classes is that readers of short stories tend to be extremely economical with their time; the medium is already so pared down that readers will immediately notice fluff or filler, which is great for character and relationship-building but not so great for things like short stories, where every word and sentence has to count (or readers will wonder what's the point of including them). (<- Obviously, fanfiction adheres to different principles.) Conventional novels have much more leeway, but there are certainly still some constrictions; scenes often serve to either further the main plot, provide plot exposition or worldbuilding to a reader, progress a character's individual development, or provide momentum to some aspect of their relationship to others. So you don't often see stuff like Halek's witch's bane incident crop up in novels, unless it's something that comes back around in some way later. (Obviously this also varies with the novel and the genre.)
Part of the reason why I chose interactive fiction is because its conventions inherently allow more freedom with this kind of thing; you can eavesdrop on your companions drinking together, or play a card game with them, or have input as they argue about Caine's education or the state of current politics or what have you, because games are immersive and players are already primed to expect that kind of immersion, and so it's very easy to showcase the characters' interactions with each other. You don't have to worry about justifying the purpose of an interaction or a scene in relation to the overall story, especially because readers can often skip and ignore these interactions altogether. This isn't me trying to steer anyone towards a specific medium, btw: I'm just saying I have an inherently easier time showcasing these character dynamics and relationships because I'm making a game with them, whereas it might be harder to have an organic reason for Briony, Ayla, and Tallys to get drunk and start beating the shit out of some farmers in a tavern and then have a sleepover where they talk about their feelings in a typical novel? Hopefully that makes sense! The short of it is, it's absolutely possible to have the same kind of character beats and relationship-building in a novel, but if mine seem particularly rich and immersive, it's also because the genre I'm working in lends itself to that and provides a lot of opportunities!
Anyway, hopefully something in there was helpful! Thanks again for the question, and good luck with your own writing, that's so exciting! 🌟

Hi! Okay, first of all, I love your writing. I think I’ve been around since the first chapter of ‘Light in your Darkness’ was published and I adore your work! Also I’ve been a longtime silent lurker in the hogwarts Legacy fandom but lowkey the immense creativity in the fandom is really making me want to write my own thing as well and actually put it out to be consumed. I’ve just never done that before and I guess I’m nervous lol 😅 anyway, all that to say, I love your work!
I- oh my god I love you I'm like genuinely sobbing like oh my god I'm just thank you like genuinely thank you so much for this you made my entire year I'm 😭😭💖
You should 100% put something out!! The great thing about this community is that everyone genuinely supports and loves everyone!! I had never written a fanfic before the light in my darkness and I was HELLA nervous about it too
But the biggest thing to remember is that you are writing for yourself more than anything, if you want to write, do it for yourself for the story you want to write and people will come!
(Also I am so sorry for not updating tlimd in like two months (T^T))
#this made me so happy#and also like ugly cry so hard mr. nutt asked if i was okay lmao#thank you so much#cassasks

Web Update #3: Final Gallery Section & Commission Updates!
Hello all! Happy Fall! 🍂🍁☕🍄🌰
As the cooler weather approaches, it’s time to bring my big website gallery overhaul to a close with the final (for now) section- the Passion Projects Section! Here I’ve documented 3 of my bigger projects (including my most recent doll of Mr. Dream).

You will find the finished photos, as well as more in-depth commentary on how I made them, materials, fun facts, WIP photos, & more! I hope you will enjoy reading them. Go to beamiesbuddies.com, hit the Gallery > Passion Projects
With that section, my Archive Gallery is more or less complete! As I make more dolls going forward, I will update the galleries from time to time. Follow me on IG and/or Tumblr to see the most recent creations!
Now for the big one- Commission Updates!
As longtime BB fans know, I’ve been opening commissions on a bi-yearly basis, to give myself the summer to finish my own projects (or even -gasp- have other hobbies!) This year, the summer has been focused on beamiesbuddies.com, as well as working on my first new line of original dolls (which I PROMISE I will start sharing soon!)
The summer was also full of activity lifewise for me, most good & some not so much. As such, I’m a little behind where I wanted to be at this time, & more than a little burnt out. I wanted to open up commissions this month for the upcoming holiday season, but being realistic, I don’t think I would be able to deliver my best work with so much still going on/needing finishing. (One of the things needing doing is the shop on this website, after all!)
Therefore: I will be opening commissions as of January 2025, for the winter season. Big apologies to those who wanted to commission me for Xmas gifts & such, but this will allow me to get a good head start on my ready-made dolls & hopefully have them up by late fall in time for holiday gift purchasing time. So you may not get a personalized character, but you could have another very cool original themed doll ;)
November 1st I will be opening up slots for the January commissions, which I will announce at that time. So, if you wanted to grab a gift for a friend, maybe you can give them the gift of a Beamie’s Buddies Custom Commission Slot? 👀
I can’t wait to share my upcoming dolls with you as I think they are looking super cute & I have so many ideas for future ones. In all my years I have never really gotten to let my imagination go & make my own characters, I feel like I’m unlocking new potential as a doll artist.
Thank you all for your lovely support on my work over the years & to come!
Love, Beamie 💖
#beamies buddies#beamie posts#i hope you all have been enjoying the gallery!#next updates will either be the Shop or my new dolls.... or both :3

Helloo, another BtB fan coming out of the woodwork lol
I completely second anon’s post about your humor, I find myself giggling like an idiot at ungodly hours re-reading your work more nights than I feel confident disclosing (as well as seconding the ask about burnout and your mental health, I would hope the majority of Okamirayne stans understand the absolute necessity of mental health breaks in the arts, and if not then there is a strong minority of your fans that will fight anyone who prioritizes the product over the author 👊💥)
Anyway….
I’m not much of a writer, and I think most ppl have articulated my feelings in asks much better than I could ever hope to, so this is just me writing a long winded “I AGREEEEE” to already existing asks. But god, when I found the BtBverse my eyes were opened to how amazing fics and headcanons can add on to already existing universes and characters. Maybe this is elementary level reading comprehension, but I’ve never been able to get immersed into worlds like I have in your fics. Normally when I read, I feel outside of the world, reading dialogue and an occasional sprinkle of world context that helps me understand what’s going on, and so many fics I read seem to relegate the characters to caricatures of their main personality traits (shikamaru is lazy, neji is a hardass, naruto is goofy, ino is obsessed with self-image) but in your writing I feel like you give so much respect to each and every character, adding the context of WHY they are the way they are in the canon universe. You’ve expanded so much of their characters that I pretty much think of your universe as canon (Kishimoto..and his disrespect of his female characters..jaded me from the canonverse a long time ago) More than reading words on a page (or a screen, I saw one post a while ago where you had a printed out copy of BtB and I’ve been yearning for one ever since), I feel like I’m actually inside your universe when I’m reading. I can actually see the entire scene you’ve laid out. Again, this is probably beginner reading comp, but when I read your work I’m actually imaging each character and their perspective, looking through their eyes (and yours) from every possible angle — what are they seeing, how does it coincide from what I’ve read about the other character’s pov, etc etc etc.
This is a giant ramble to basically say, not only am I grateful to have such a brilliant and beautiful work in the Shikaneji fandom, I am also grateful to have been exposed to your writing. I’ve always been a stem girly, but reading your work has opened my eyes to the beauty of what writing is capable of. BtB has helped my brain reintroduce its love for reading, something I thought I lost long ago. Of course, I am constantly yearning for more and more HHU installments, but, to reiterate already existing asks and comments, I am so incredibly grateful for the already existing work that you have produced. I hope that whatever your future holds, whether it be more HHU chapters, your own independent worlds, or just doing whatever the hell you want, you keep on writing. You probably know this already, but you have such incredible writing skills, and I’m sure whatever you decide to do in your future will be brilliant.
- love letter from a longtime fan
Hello there, Long Time Fan!💖
So ridiculously excited and happy to hear from you! Thank you so much for making the time to hit me up here on Tumblr with this phenomenally kind, sweet, thoughtful and all out awesome message. I'm gobsmacked but will endeavour to respond. 🫶🏼💜
Firstly, so chuffed you enjoy the BtB humour, luv. *high fives* Solidarity in the giggles to dilute the angst! I also thank you for your support regarding my burnout and what you mentioned about prioritising the author over the product. That means a lot and I appreciate it, especially when there is so much content flooding out to be consumed and the pressure to create feels immense at times. 🫠💀
I’m not much of a writer, and I think most ppl have articulated my feelings in asks much better than I could ever hope to, so this is just me writing a long winded “I AGREEEEE” to already existing asks.
Just the fact that you took the time to write to me, means everything. I love, appreciate, respect, and treasure every single comment or response I get - as they are as individual to me as the person writing the feedback or sharing their thoughts at the other end of the screen. Each message or comment reads different and hits different to me and are uniquely precious. 🥰
But god, when I found the BtBverse my eyes were opened to how amazing fics and headcanons can add on to already existing universes and characters. [...] I’ve never been able to get immersed into worlds like I have in your fics. Normally when I read, I feel outside of the world, [...] so many fics I read seem to relegate the characters to caricatures of their main personality traits [...] but in your writing I feel like you give so much respect to each and every character, adding the context of WHY they are the way they are in the canon universe.
Ah, you hit me right in the feels, luv 💖. I know I repeat this a lot but the characters are the most important part of the storytelling craft for me. If they have weird quirks or habits I wanna know what's behind it all and I am so delighted and touched to know that the deep-dive into these characters has engaged you and gotten you invested in the BtB-verse. I am glowing right now. The characters are the heart and soul of it all. Expanding on them, acknowledging them as the heroes of their own stories is so important - extrapolating from that, that's why each individual review means so much to me, because a person is a character on the other side of the screen with their own reasons for connecting with my work, and I acknowledge how varied that is for each person. 🥰
[...] I feel like I’m actually inside your universe when I’m reading.
In no way is what you're describing beginner reading comprehension. We never know what's going to connect with us. I am so touched by what you've shared here...especially as it relates to two of the most important elements of the storytelling craft for me. 1) To do justice to the characters 2) to deliver an experience for the reader, and if not that, then entertrainment and escape - but "an experience" is always what I aim for...and you've given me such an incredible validation with what you described in your message, so THANK YOU, so, so much...THIS is why I write and invest so much into the writing. So that someone can feel that sense of immersion into the world, into the characters. I'm beyond thrilled that you feel this way. 💖💜🫠🥰
I'm so thankful to have you as a reader and am just buzzing to have received this beautiful message from you.💖🥹💖
[...] BtB has helped my brain reintroduce its love for reading, something I thought I lost long ago. Of course, I am constantly yearning for more and more HHU installments, but, to reiterate already existing asks and comments, I am so incredibly grateful for the already existing work that you have produced.
💖....just, wow. Seriously. Thank you.
I hope that whatever your future holds, whether it be more HHU chapters, your own independent worlds, or just doing whatever the hell you want, you keep on writing.
Messages like yours remind me why I want to keep doing it. Thank you so damn much for the love, support, kindness, insight and amazing solidarity your words have expressed and gifted me with. 🥰🙏🏼 Receiving messages like yours will always mean more to me than I can ever do justice to in words (which is always a bittersweet irony).
Thank you. Sincerely. Wholly. Utterly. Thank You. 💖💖💖

I love your analysis and opinions and I just saw this tweet about a Bad Buddy scene and wanted to ask what your thoughts are about it?
https://twitter.com/amaranthfoxtail/status/1629839868695117824?s=46&t=SwaHCtnbpSqeuX21_sj56g
Well hi there Anonymous, thanks for stopping by! 🥰
For context, the following screencap is from the tweet above (also linked here), and it's about Pran's behavior when Ming comes to thank him for his help in getting Pat exonerated, at Ep.10 [1I4] 4.56:
I agree with OP on Twitter that this is another demonstration of Nanon's acting prowess. 😍 It's not of great significance to the plotline (in the sense that his acting here is not in service of some momentous reveal), but nonetheless what he does really helps reinforce the storytelling by further solidifying what we already know about Pran as a character.
To be quite honest, I actually hadn't noticed Nanon doing his thing in this scene, because BBS is full of quality acting (especially from the leads). Even the supporting cast were mostly commendable (with a couple of notable exceptions, whom we shall charitably leave nameless, of course 😉).
When you're not distracted by actorly inauthenticity, it's much easier to lose yourself in the narrative and its message. And with Bad Buddy, I found myself completely sucked in for the most part.
There was so much happening at the levels of text, subtext and metatext that it was all too easy to forget just how good at their craft (most of) the actors are. This little scene is a reminder to take a step back and admire one set of beautifully-functioning cogs and wheels that not only helped to bring the overall ideas-juggernaut that was Bad Buddy to life, but also imbued the chugging machine with a human soul. 🥰
Because of Dissaya's constant drumbeating about how much of a danger Ming and his gang of Jindapats next door were, Pran had always lived his life with his defenses mounted sky-high, keeping his personal life and any perceived vulnerabilities hidden away and protected from the outside. (See this link here for an analysis of Pran's private, protected world.)
At this juncture in BBS, Pran must also have been struggling internally (although, as usual, he's keeping it hidden from outside view). Despite the happiness of finally coupling up with his longtime crush Pat, that very same relationship (a font of so much joy) would also have been a source of distress on some level for him too.
Due to Dissaya's indoctrination, ever since his babyhood, Pran's one overriding assignment in life (above all others) was to stay the hell away from the evil, evil Jindapat family.
And falling into couplehood with his beloved Pat was the ultimate transgression of this one singular mission assigned to him ("You had ONE job!", I can almost hear Dissaya screaming at him. And she did, in a way, later this episode. 🤦♂️)
After a lifetime of secret-keeping, Pran is now saddled with one more skeleton to keep buried (at least from their families), and it's the biggest one of all.
So when he finds himself being approached by The Big Bad out on a public street, while he's actually talking with Pat, this must have been a terrifying moment for Pran (especially since he and Pat had already been outed as a couple by Wai on campus in Ep.8 [4/4]).
What Nanon does here is fill out his portrait of Pran with all-believable details, because we see Pran reacting wholly in character, consistent with his inner motivations.
As Ming nears, we see Pran's eyes flash with momentary fear, and he instinctively begins putting up walls to retreat behind (entirely in keeping with his basic modus operandi for any outside threat since childhood.)
His salutary wai to Ming is not a lowering of the drawbridge; it's a formality that is but one part of the culturally-imposed layering of politesse over social encounters in Thailand, which helps to keep things at a safe and formal distance (and Pran at this stage is all about building up layers as buffers to the outside, so of course he rushes one out, albeit awkwardly).
Nanon then goes for the body language, and opts for a clearly defensive stance to illustrate Pran's need to shield himself psychologically from The Enemy, with his arms crossed tight and low against his body. All the while his posture is stiffened, as though he's barely remembering to breathe, frozen like a prey animal that's aware it's been sighted.
Then there's the clasping of the watch. On one level it must have been hugely reassuring to Pran (in this moment of fearful uncertainty) to be able to physically touch – if not his beloved Pat standing right next to him (for that would have been madness in Ming's presence), then at least an enduring symbol of the love they share. 💖
But with a closer look we see he's not just touching or fingering it like a totem for comfort – he's covering it totally from view. Since Ming can't have known how the watch is symbolic of Pran's long-held love for Pat, there is actually no need for Pran to hide it from him.
But that fact is immaterial to Pran, because I think he indulges in a lot of his (trademark) behaviors more for himself than others. It's a coping mechanism, for him to feel in control and safe. For example, arranging his coloring kit so that it grades across the spectrum, having a strictly-choreographed morning routine, the large smiley on his door – all these are almost ritualistic in nature, bringing order, comfort and calm (in that sequence) to Pran's world.
So even while the watch doesn't mean a thing to Ming, hiding it from him is a tremendous psychological boost to Pran. On one level, it's a reminder to him of his other defensive circles around all that he holds dear.
But the watch also throbs with the emotional weight of all his unrequited love accumulated over years spent pining, a love that then ballooned to its fullest form when fed with Pat's love returned. It's a metaphor not just of the present-day love between him and Pat, but also of the defining history of how that love came to be, and in that way a metaphor of the relationship itself over time (a watch is a signaler of time, after all).
So covering the watch with his hand is yet another metaphor, for how Pran has been shielding the true nature of his association with Pat all his life. (And when he does this, a little part of me also wants to think he's also trying to protect his beloved Pat as well. 💖)
I wouldn't have expected anything less from Pran, because he loves plastering the walls of his life with metaphors that embody his preternatural need for veiled communication (at least up until this point).
And then we need to take ourselves out of the moment, and ponder the fact that Nanon was holding all of this roiling backstory within himself and using it to shape a Pran of prized authenticity, who is true to life, consistent, rounded and believable to any viewer. Nothing short of amazing. 🤩
It's just occurred to me though, that Ming's expression of gratitude and also Pat's excitement at the possible thawing of family relations in this scene could have helped push Pran to try living his life with more vulnerability exposed.
But instead of doing it gradually, he made it a seismic change by organizing their khan maak in front of the Archi Faculty, a mutual and very public declaration of love – and it unfolds right after this scene (barring the opening credits).
Unless I'm mistaken, this really is the last time we see Pran with his shields and defenses anxiously up – conveyed to us via a few simple gestures from the master of subtlety Nanon Korapat.
So aside from Ming's hugely unexpected apology to the offspring of his sworn enemy, this scene was also notable for maybe helping to nudge Pran out of his shell. Who knew there was this milestone in there too? 😍💖
P.S. If you'd like to read a bit more about Nanon's and Ohm's acting styles, @absolutebl's got some more analysis at this link here (and as usual it's some mighty fine stuff 👍).

Re: that rude asker. People just need to understand that fanfic isn’t canon. I really enjoy your fanfic, I’ve followed your Batfam writing for a long time. I’m ALSO a longtime (ie 15 years) reader of Batman comics, and have published academic articles on Batman comics. Never once has your work “being fanon” bothered me. You have the right to take artistic liberties! That’s the whole point! You’re a good author. Furthermore you’ve always been open with the fact that your not super versed in canon. So why complain? Completely uncalled for. I think you do a great job, don’t let sourpusses get to you!
Thank you for the support, I'm glad you're enjoying my stories! 💖

Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you've written, then pass on to at least five other writers. Let’s spread the self-love 💖
Aww, thanks for sending this over, M! I’m getting better at self recs, though I’m still shy about my writing. But I’ll give this a shot anyway: Little did I know (Perciver, T, 2.4k)- This fic is my baby. It marks so many firsts for me: first fic of 2021, first time posting a fic after a 10 year hiatus, first time writing different character PoVs and for a different ship, and first time trying to stay under 2.5k words. The love and support it has gotten has been phenomenal, and has encouraged me to keep building this world and to keep going with a whole series. Summary: Right after the Battle of Hogwarts, Percy and Oliver find their way back to each other again. Sweet Surrender (Jegulus, E, 333 with art)- This ficlet also marks new firsts: first time writing smut in 11 years (I guess I haven’t lost that skill yet ;D), first time delving into PWP in writing, first time making something for Jegulus, and first time posting fic AND art together. I wrote and drew this up in 2 days (don’t ask how), but I’d say that was quite an accomplishment! Summary: Spanking always served as foreplay to get the adrenaline going. But if James wanted more, Regulus would give it to him. Testing the Limits (Hucey, E, 147)- Okay, more firsts! First time writing this rare pair, and first time trying to write smut in under 150 words. Let me say, that was not easy. This drabble was one of my favs from A Study in Kink, and there really needs to be more of these two together. Summary: Terence is caught by surprise when Adrian fulfills one of his longtime fantasies. Hooked on You (Flintbell, E, 148)- Another fave rare pair I got to write for. First time writing them and writing het. This drabble was on fire and one the quickest ones I wrote because the idea just worked. I’m definitely up for exploring more of this ship in the future because I really like their dynamic. Summary: Marcus lets himself get carried away every time he goes down on Katie. There’s a guiding light (Perciver, G, 2.5k)- I posted this one up at the beginning of the month, and I am so proud I finally finished it! Fun fact: I wrote this in 2020 but threw it to the side because I wasn’t sure where it was going, and I was iffy about my writing back then. Only recently with inspiration and some cheer-leading did I pick it up again, and now it exists! Summary: When Percy struggles to conjure a Patronus, Oliver helps out by giving him a motivating push. Maybe in a separate rec list, I’ll include my favs dating back from 2006-2011, since I’m planning to edit and re-release some older fics on AO3 for the first time starting in the next month or so (that’s 50k+ of Drarry and 12K+ of Deamus :P). ANYWAY, if you’ve read this far, thanks! For funsies (and no pressure at all), I’m tagging @emansil, @awesomedig, @vdoshu, @ladderofyears, @mystickitten42 and @wheezykat if you fancy doing this too. I’d love to see what fics you’re most proud of!
