A SHORT STUDY ON KLAUS HARGREEVES. 🃏

— based on the s4 tarot cards scene.

(hi! tbh I have no idea if this has been done yet. I’m finally out from the shock of this shitty ending lmao. Only seen a thing or two about this topic, talking ‘bout the Hargreeves’ fate… but i wanted to give it a deeper thought, ‘cause I just haven’t stopped thinking on that specific scene where klaus does a reading, and what each card meant for his character specifically, so, I decided to do this for fun & because I have my good knowledge on tarot cards. enjoy.)

Okay! So, the scene starts with Klaus sitting in the van, just passing time by doing a small reading with his cards. Which, not only gave us a brief look into the future for the Hargreeves’ fate, but it also gave us a look into who Klaus Hargreeves is. It shows us how his character could’ve been developed, what they could work at as a person (if they hadn’t erased a certain couple of scenes). And it is honestly sooo on point with their personality.

• We start off with Card #1 — The Lovers.

This is the first card that comes out. A classic. And obviously, we all go to the same thought when seeing this one specific card, but if you watch closely you can see much more in it than just a couple. Klaus jokes about it, saying; “that’s obvious, I haven’t been laid in months.”

And sure it’s a fun joke. We all might think the main thing that is the talk about this card (love, couples, lovers, etc). And damn my mind also went to Dave. But it has a deeper meaning.

This card talks about self-love. Something we know Klaus struggles with. Sure, they are a very confident person in their body, they care for their appearance, but he also despises himself for their usual low points. For letting it out on his family, all the stealing he did, the times he didn’t accept help, the times he felt like he wasn’t important or that he was a disappointment. The Lovers is the card of the search for self-love, for confidence, of being your own soulmate, in a way. This person has a tendency to fall in love quickly, but they have to be careful — the mountains and the snake represent the obstacles to reach to that desired love. Which, hell, Klaus had to go through considering his true love (Dave) is from another time and couldn’t be free. Romantic love will be easier to find once you reach into that self-care/self-love. The angel does represent that not everything is lost, there is a chance for love, for a certain couple.

Yet— we don’t see that happy ending for Klaus on the screen.

• Card #2 — The Tower.

What there is to say about this that isn’t obvious? This card represents pure chaos. Klaus says it himself; “Loss of self-control.”

It is also the card of change. Ringing any bells yet? All the siblings went through a big change on those six years without powers. And Klaus’ was impressive, he spent three years sober, now lives with Allison and Claire, and had developed a germaphobia.

If we get the negative sort of change, The Tower brings a misunderstanding, the way something that shouldn’t be will be forced. (Klaus getting his powers back, then when he sees how it will be inevitable to fall into old habits again as soon as he gets home and gets into the argument with Claire). But if we get the positive side, we’ll also get strength against the adversity, some optimism. (Which, hey, he managed to escape from the building and then from a goddamn tomb, it showed huge strength of character from someone like Klaus to do that.)

Now! If we look into the future with that reading scene being the starting point — there is even more change. Watch the card, there’s two characters jumping out of the window, away from the fire and darkness of the tower (one’s mind). There’s also some doubt, but it is something inevitable, you have to escape. It represents a freeing or liberation, a crisis, a rupture of some sorts. It can be shown in the other siblings as well, as we saw during the season.

But for Klaus specifically — he got freed from the constant fear, and got his powers back after dying. Again. Which, once again, wasn’t his choice but that is where the chaos starts. Right after that, there comes the fall in his sibling relationship with Allison, and once again the liberation, where Klaus finally stood up for himself. They are in a crisis, because he thinks he will fall into old habits. Because he thinks it’s inevitable as soon as the ghosts appear.

But with change, comes an end. A realization, an escape… In the deleted scenes, we see how Klaus decides to go to A.A. after Allison and Claire help him out of the grave. There’s this loving moment, where they let the fight behind and they go back to being a family. And this also shows strength from Klaus, because after so many years, he is willing to accept the truth. He talks about his struggles with addiction, opens up, shows his development during those sober years, says how he regrets on letting it out on his family (which surely means specifically Ben because he was the one to see Klaus on each fall, and then they never got a chance to have a serious talk because even Ben’s ghost is gone). And finishes up by saying he is an alcoholic, showing that development. Despite everything, he gained psychological strength and decided to accept the help, to deal with his problems and stay sober.

• Which brings us to Card #3 — Ten of Swords.

Klaus is *very* clear when this card comes out. “The card of death.” He says, and then immediately put everything away, scared. And yes, it did show that he would die, to later come back to life — as we saw when he got shot and the siblings didn’t have any other choice but to give him the marigold. But once again, there’s always a deeper level with Tarot.

Well, there’s something about the Swords. They all talk about the mind, thoughts. The path of the swords is to learn through experience.

Klaus Hargreeves has gained plenty of experience in various topics throughout the seasons. Starting off with how much their powers developed over the years, how much they trained on season three. How emotionally developed he had always been. How each experience gave him a new thing to learn. And despite everyone’s thoughts, Klaus does learn. But he just keeps facing shit and sometimes has to hit the same wall to really learn first.

There is a certain insecurity in the swords, a lack of level, that is also shown on the other two cards that Klaus took. But before he learns, he has to hit the same wall, has to face the chaos, has to hit rock bottom.

And that is what this card means exactly, hitting rock bottom. We’ve seen Klaus hitting it a couple of times, but this was the drop that was needed to fill up the glass. When this card appears in a reading, it’s hard to advise the person, why? Because this person has auto-destructive tendencies. Sounds familiar? Klaus has had those tendencies since he was a child. We saw it. It started off with their addiction, then with hitting dangerous places, the constant dying, the way they haven’t really gotten into serious relationships, how he always chose the thing that would explode in his face. So, anything that happens could cut the stability that this person may have gained. Which is why Klaus kept falling into the same patterns over and over throughout his life.

But — with an end, there’s also a new start. With death also comes a reborn, literal death and reborn for Klaus, because of his powers. It shows that the person couldn’t escape their problems anymore, because the thoughts (the swords) they have been trying so hard to ignore, sneaked on them and killed them. (Once again, a bit literal for Klaus). One has to face their problems to come back. There is a need for transformation, like a butterfly, or like the Phoenix that comes back from their ashes.

And honestly, this would’ve been so much more clear if they actually kept the Klaus’ scenes they deleted. Where he embraced the transformation, accepted his problems and searched for a solution. Where he could get a closure, a hint of hope.

Anyway, if you can’t tell, I genuinely love this sweetheart and I think they deserved so, so, so much better than the ending they gave him. It doesn’t take much but be observant on how interesting of a character Klaus Hargreeves is but unfortunately this fell into the wrong hands, because they couldn’t give a character with so much depth a good final. (And all the Hargreeves for all the matter! Justice for my fav siblings). If anyone actually takes the time to read through this, thank you. This was for fun, out of love for the show, love for Klaus and love for tarot all combined. <3

Overall Energy

A lot of cards came out for them here, but in the layout, it seems that First and Khao are well represented in the center two cards with Discrimination (Venus in Virgo) and Harmony (Sun in Libra), reflecting the influence of their respective Sun Signs.

There are a few patterns showing up throughout this set that reflect an intended disconnect on a conscious level as if they are meant to operate on opposite ends of a spectrum but connect or come together through Power (Moon in Scorpio). There’s a strong duality between them which is shown as the butterflies being sent away from First (projected energy) and the birds flying toward Khao (receptive energy). This pattern of duality also runs through the images of the Sun and Moon being separated in certain images, and then pictured together in an eclipse in the Power card. The Sun and The Moon both appear in the main reading as well further showcasing that duality.

At the head of the set, there is the Crown Chakra, which puts a lot of emphasis here on conscious level awareness alongside a kind of sixth sense for each other. It’s almost like they both can be a bit lost when trying to communicate with or understand other people, getting other people to understand them, but with each other, there is an intuitive knowing and emotional connection that is well-received and well-understood on both ends.

This is then followed up by Observer and Co-Create. Following through from the Crown Chakra, the Observer represents their observation of each other. As the perspective shifts from one to the other, the Moon in the sky becomes the Sun. Co-Create also pushes the idea of a distanced connection, almost mirroring the image of Observer as the fox sits on an egg that appears at the bottom of Co-Create. Where the Moon occupies the top left corner of Observer, a cheetah sits at the top left of Co-Create, lining up through Fire energy with the Sun.

With Observer, it’s more literal, as in they keep an eye on each other, study each other to some degree, but in Co-Create there is a line that connects and separates them, the owl symbolizing direct communication.

Co-Creation is expanded on through the display of Discrimination and Harmony with Venus in Virgo (First) and the Sun in Libra (Khao). You can take the words quite literally in the sense of Discrimination being where things can be separated and Harmony being where things come together. It can also show duality between a person who is very selective, logical, and clinical in their way of operating, while the other is more carefree and creative with their expression and action. They seem to have one of those dynamics where First can anchor Khao and keep him calm while Khao can lift First up and make him more playful.

Again, they operate perpetually at opposite ends of a spectrum but are shown to come together well in Power (Moon in Scorpio). There’s qutie a bit of layers to this one. Superficially, I see the Sun and Moon coming together within the confines of that stone archway as them coming together on screen, painted in a pink light that contrasts to the blue sky around them, being watched by the audience below. That is their more superficial co-creation, the work they do together. They’re quite a powerful and effective on-screen couple, generating that pink light themselves to some degree with their natural chemistry.

Along with this, as the Moon can be quite secretive and Scorpio/8th House can be a place we hide things from others and ourselves, there’s a certain suggestion here of this being rooted in something more genuine. As in, their on-screen chemistry may be rooted in a genuine attraction for each other that they limit in their personal lives as friends, but explore a bit more freely on-screen or through their characters. So, we can kind of look at the Sun and Moon in the image as either being on screen, or being “behind closed doors” where the attraction may even be kept secret from each other. Not in a too-dramatic or detrimental way, just a more mindful, boundary-respecting way.

I also want to point out the progression of the cards through Virgo, Libra, and Scorpio, marking the 6th, 7th, and 8th House. This could suggest that they are crucial to each other for personal progression and development. This can be directed at their careers, their personal well-being (mental and emotional), and higher aspects of soul development as well.

Following this set, they then have the asteroid Juno. Juno is labeled as “The Partner,” and emphasizes balance in relationships. It feels a bit rooted in Virgo/Mercury energy with how clinically observant the description of this card is toward relationships and curating them into something that is beneficial for both sides, respecting both sides. Potentially giving reason or backing to the secrets behind Power, Juno is very careful with how relationships progress, encouraging conversation and constant check-ins with the other person to make sure you’re on the same page and moving at the same pace.

Alongside that, at the very end, they have the Page of Swords which, for the most part, seems to completely oppose Juno with how quick and eager the Page is to establish communication and develop relationships. If I had to guess, I’d say Juno and the Page of Swords represent each of the guys with how they approach their relationships. Given the energies of Discrimination and Harmony, I would put Juno in First’s hands and the Page of Swords in Khao’s, but this could also be a matter of internal versus external connection or how they handle the connection. As in, internally they both are eager to really dive into this connection, but externally, more logically, professionally, they lay boundaries and mind them well, checking in with each other often.

Overall, there’s something quite FRESH about this energy here, like fresh air. It feels easier to breathe when I focus on this energy between them. This may reflect how they feel with each other, where they can relax and simply breathe together. It makes me think of those comfortably quiet relationships where you don’t have to hold a conversation, just sitting together in silence is enough to help you feel calm and refreshed.

First’s Projection: The Moon (rev.) Khao’s Projection: Two of Cups + The Star

This set showcases the energy that each of them are projecting within this relationship. It doesn’t necessarily reflect conscious-level thoughts or emotions.

With First’s projection being the reversed Moon, in relation to Khao’s set, I could go back and assume that Juno is solidly in his hands, while the Page of Swords is solidly in Khao’s. The reversed Moon can suggest hesitation based on an intuitive impulse that may be more rooted in fear, or a heightened awareness of someone else’s emotions. There’s a lot of concern and because of that, he’s quite careful and TRIES to hold his emotions back, but it seems like they flow regardless when it comes to Khao.

I also was seeing the reversed Moon here reflecting The Star on Khao’s side, linking and reflecting each other through Khao’s Two of Cups. It’s almost like The Star is supposed to be The Sun and the reversed Moon is supposed to be an upright Moon, the counterparts, but here there’s just a bit more restriction on First’s side, so that duality is not displayed as evenly in their overall projected energy, which reflects the soul state more than a conscious level projection.

On Khao’s side, the Two of Cups is the only card in Tarot that I can easily associate with love and deeper, more intimate connections. The card displays very clear emotional connection and exchange, along with a mirroring of the selves on multiple levels, as displayed by the cats, hummingbirds, and cups (body, mind, and spirit).

The Star puts Khao’s energy in a very high place. This connection is very, very significant for him and is something that seems to have raised him to a new height. Again, it’s like he’s supposed to be The Sun, be he’s been elevated to something much higher, much brighter by this connection, and he’s very aware of that. He’s very aware, through the Two of Cups, that First has given him something through this relationship that has made him shine brighter.

It’s so funny because it’s like First can see that too, can see that there’s a very clear reflective, dualistic aspect to their connection that is very significant, but he’s holding back on it as not to overstep or make things uncomfortable. I really don’t think it would be uncomfortable for either of them, but this is a mix of Libra and Virgo, so I suppose we shouldn’t be surprised by this.

How First Sees Khao: Queen of Pentacles How Khao Sees First: Temperance (rev.)

This set shows how, within their current state, dynamic, and projections, they see each other. Starting with Khao’s card, he sees First within their connection as Temperance in reverse, which mainly came through as a version of the Two of Cups in reverse. In other words, he sees or feels that First is not really “joining him” on that level, or engaging with that aspect of their relationship as much. I feel this being centered heavily in Air energy, and I’m seeing it as, in its reversed position, the water spilling out of the cups and leaving behind a void of uncertainty or a lack of clarity about thoughts or feelings.

On some level, on a more personal level, it seems that with Temperance and The Moon both being in reverse, that there is a bit of emotional blocking or denial, which could also fall under aspects of Power and secrecy.

On the upside, First sees Khao as the Queen of Pentacles, which I feel any Libra would be flattered by. He sees Khao as someone quite strong in their power, perhaps a little stubborn, who curates and enjoys beauty and luxury, while also being very dedicated and serious about their work and appearance. There’s a very soft and gentle nature that is expressed in this card, and seems to be something First is very drawn to and comforted by.

Current State of Relationship: The Sun Highest Potential: Judgement (rev.) + Six of Cups (rev.)

The current state of the relationship is represented here by The Sun, the most positive and uplifting card in the entire deck. It comes with a lot of prosperity, success, happiness, balance, and a sense of freedom around expansion of knowledge and creation. It’s a luminary so it can come with a slight sense of being over-exposed, which again, could go back into Power with the Moon in Scorpio, and certain aspects being kept secret, or certain aspects being limited for the sake of remaining professional and considerate of their friendship as it is now.

The Sun makes it feel like they are either at their peak, or are perpetually rising within their peaks together. This again brings to mind the idea of the Sun and Moon always, in a sense, being on opposite sides of the world to each other, constantly chasing each other, only able to really connect in those rare moments of a solar eclipse.

While The Sun could have a bit of tension to it, mostly there’s just a lot of beauty, a lot of appreciation for each other as they see each other as a “light” in their life, something that will help them grow and guide them through uncertain situations, and maybe even guide them through aspects of themselves internally.

The highest potential of their relationship at the current moment is represented by Judgment and the Six of Cups, both reversed. This doesn’t feel quite like a literal highest potential, more so it feels like this is reflecting a desired destination for their souls within the current phase of progression. These reversed cards suggest here the release of judgement and the release of the past. It’s like these cards are marking a threshold into another level of their relationship that they will not be able to reach unless they remove some of their own restrictions.

Judgement feels more related to external aspects, as in literal people outside of them potentially judging them, or them being afraid of being judged, criticized, or even punished. This could be related to Juno in terms of fearing retribution or bad outcomes if things were to progress further, both in terms of their careers and their personal friendship.

The Six of Cups is more internal. When upright, it’s quite positive in relation to childhood and positive memories or connections of the past. This could be a matter of having experienced friendships like this before where there were a lot of big feelings that grew past the lines of friendship and unfortunately collapsed the relationship entirely. This could be rooted in something entirely unrelated that just happens to affect their (or First’s) sense of security within a relationship like this and therefore doesn’t want to cross lines out of fear of not being able to undo it.

It really does just all strike me as an incredibly deep, and emotionally fueled friendship that borders on the edge of a romantic connection but is healthily kept at bay for the sake of each other and their circumstances. While there is room here for some ups and downs, certainly some space for conflict, there’s just a deep knowing or sense within them that lets them know that this is the person they need right now in their life in order to progress the way that they want to on all levels.

I will say that it doesn’t seem like their relationship is one that is meant to last forever, at least not in this state. It is supposed to progress into something new, but it’s not clear to me if that’s a relationship that is closer, more intimate, or a relationship that honors the distance between the Sun and the Moon.

Episode 40 - The Beginning

I don't know why this made me laugh so much.

This moment is made funnier by the fact that they have these balls everywhere at home. Everywhere in episode 1 and 2, then in a basket downstairs after that, then, in the movie, yet again, all over the fucking place. Chances are, playing with balls of wool is something Joris does a lot. No wonder he has no idea why Keke's mad at him this time.

KILL HIM JORIS. I really like that as time goes on he will say this about the most inane things. Buddy, he had a dinosaur tooth, and you're doubting that his orphan ass took a single yarn ball from Ecaflip's collection?

There are all these kids, who are friends, and Keke only plays with Ecaflip. I had said that, probably, being Atcham's brother didn't help him socially, but also,., I do think Ecaflip was isolating him on purpose too.

See, when Ecaflip needs Keke to feel awesome, it's "you're the luckiest ecaflip ever", but when he needs Kerubim to need his care and stay by his side, it's "you will Die without me."

I hate this guy.

Yes, Ecaflip values the freedom of his disciples. As long as they are not useful to him. If they are... then, well, it doesn't matter what they want.

He probably wanted Kerubim to be by his side forever. For centuries. Just in one place, for him to have fun with. And I think that's a very normal thing to be scared shitless of.

...Orphanage confirmed to have toilers despite the fact that ecaflips can use a litter box. Also it really is such an Ecaflip move, to punish Kerubim for not wanting to be his pet for his whole life.

Things are that bad. He's being kept here against his will by a guy who plans to do this to him for centuries, and he's forced to mop for him.

I really do think that it's admirable, that no matter how much bullshit Ecaflip throws at him, Kerubim never loses his willingness to fight for himself, or, at the very least, make himself a problem. He will not go gently into that good night.

Y'know, judging from how often hearts are used in graffiti in this series, I genuinely think they may symbolize something far more risqué, in-universe.

It is a common misconception that, in earlier human history, this symbol was used to represent sexual organs, which may inspire its usage in this context, within the show.

(Apparently it simply doesn't look like a heart to modern people because we usually look at scientific diagrams, instead of like... actual real hearts of animals during butchery and cooking, or human cadavers. Apparently the real thing, without all the veins, is "<3" shaped. Yes, I went on a deep dive for this symbol's history, for this post. You're welcome.)

Kerubim is saying this to make him feel guilty, as can be seen from his pout immediately after he says this. But the thing is...

The thing is that if you keep telling someone that they're worthless, so that they stay with you, they will, generally, probably start believing it just a little bit. Even if they don't want to. Especially if they're a child.

Is it any wonder his relationship with Lou fell apart because he felt unworthy of her, and it made him fall into gambling addiction, and the glitz and glam of being "successful" and "rich"?

The scariest part of this episode is that Joris recognizes enough similarities between his own situation and Kerubim's (an isolating relationship with a single adoptive parent (Don't forget, Kerubim did have a mortal family once, before the temple, — Ecaflip essentially took him in, despite being his biological father), and said parent insists on being ~Besties~ with you, while you don't really have many, if any at all, friends outside the household. And the household is a very high-stress environment), to clock the relationship between Keke and Eca as a parent-child one.

Even without yet knowing that Kerubim is a demigod.

Once, there was a laurenstine, in her most beautiful state. Petals in full display, beautifully shown in the sun’s direction. Once, an amaryllis came by, catching the laurenstine’s eye and letting a red rose bloom. They bonded, talked, exchanged numbers and parted ways. “Please, be careful. Don’t get too attached, for your Arborvitae will wilt and leave you in pieces.” The blackthorn foretold. “She’ll be fine,” the laurenstine protested, “she will be fine, for the soil is rich. There is no danger.”

Their relationship bloomed into something more as the laurenstine left from her old garden to be with the amaryllis, her job had bad working conditions anyways. The amaryllis still had a job though, so the laurenstine had to say goodbye frequently. “See you later, my little astragalus.” She yelled out to her from the kitchen as she left. She cleaned the kitchen as she waited for the average afternoon call from the amaryllis.

(“Not while there’s work to do,” she lectured to amaryllis, “you’re close to a breakthrough, don’t get distracted.”)

….A champignon bloomed as the amaryllis didn’t pick up. She spoke into the phone, even if the astragalus wasn’t gonna pick up.

“Hello, love. I know you usually call to check up on me, but it has been 5 hours since the usual time you call, I’m getting worried. …I’m fine currently, are you?” Silence from the other line. “…I’ll see you when you come home.” Soon, the clock screamed ‘8’ and the amaryllis came. “I’m sorry I haven’t called, my boss has gotten stricter.” The laurenstine scoffed at that, her distaste for snapdragon growing. The same thing happened the next day.

And the next.

and the next.

There was only one call from the amaryllis during the entirety of that week, and even that was a short call that the nightshade walked in on.

…At some point, amaryllis stopped coming home.

Only one call explained it.

“Hey, uh, babe…Sooooo I got a raise for a little discovery I made in the lab, bad news, I’m probably going to be way busier than normal. I’m sorry.”

The laurenstine sighed. She had already deepcleaned the house multiple times out of boredom without the arborvitae, so she took up sewing. The table is covered in thread and plushies (mostly of fish, some weird white four-legged creature with big eyes, and of amaryllis). She made a quick call to a friend of hers after she got bored of sewing and her pitiful attempts at crocheting. “My dear blackthorn,” she began. “I’m sorry that I’m not calling to talk to you about anything important to you, but I need to know; is my dearest okay?” “Of course I’m okay, I never left my house since Monday.” “I love you too, but I was not talking about you. I meant my love, my light, my other half.” Blackthorn chuckled on the other line when laurenstine said that. “And you used to say that you two were ‘just friends’? Anyways, jokes aside, lose your attachment. She will be gone, her fate being sealed. You’ve been missed while she was gone, but her return will not happen. I do not condone calling her every five seconds, for you will get a call soon. When you do, listen carefully, for the words will not be repeated.” Blackthorn quickly hung up, leaving the laurenstine silent. She knew the blackthorn told her not to call the amaryllis yet, but it was routine at this point. Laurenstine never broke routine. “…Day 1, I guess. I just called the blackthorn. They said some…important words to note, so that will be kept in mind. I might do some tarot soon.”

“Day 7, I was able to finally crochet a square, I’m never doing it again. I hope you’re doing better than me though.”

“Day 14, me and blackthorn finally had a normal hangout. They introduced me to some new friends, I hope you’re doing well.”

“Day 20, I got a job as a cohost for a game show. Wish me luck!”

“…Day 21….uh….hm….Soooo, remember that one coworker we used to have? Yeah, she’s my boss now….I’m convinced that she’s gonna murder me in my sleep. I hope you’re doing well.”

“Day 35, I finally met up with those ‘new friends’ I talked about….It..went well I guess? I hope you’re doing well.”

“Day 67, I physically feel unhealthy. Emotionally, I mean. I was always physically unhealthy….That probably made no sense. I….hope you’re doing okay.”

“Day…What was the number again? Ah, day 134. I feel like tearing my eyes out.”

(The amaryllis paused. She was knee deep in work, there being no phone in the room for her to use. She quickly went to talk with snapdragon. “Let’s make a deal,” she said. “You never like it when I try to call or communicate with my girlfriend because it distracts me from work, right?” “Correct. Where are you going with this?” “…If I am able to record a message during my break for her and let it play when she usually calls, I’ll be able to finally leave her a reply for once and do my work. So, what do you say?” The amaryllis waited eagerly for a response. “Fine.” The snapdragon said. “You may give her a recording, I guess. Now leave my office, you have work to do.”)

“Day 236. Please call me. I need you here.”

“Day 365. Happy New Year. The fact that you haven’t called in a year is super concerning. I really hope you’re okay.”

“Day 474. Come back to me, Princess. My bones feel flaccid.”

“Day I-lost-count. Come back. Please.”

“Day 5 hundred- who gives a crap. Come home. I miss you. I need you with me.”

“Day 608. …I saw you in a dream. You apologized for so many things. Please know I forgive you, just come back to me. Please.”

The laurenstine felt like she had wilted, but she was still in decent health. Sure, her appearance was a bit disheveled, but she was fine. It was just the loneliness in the house. “I’m fine.” She repeated to herself, over and over, wishing the statement was true. Soon, she heard her phone ring, assuming that it was the blackthorn, she picked up.

“Hey gurl-“

“Hello, this is a prerecorded message.” The voice was instantly recognizable as the amaryllis.

“This is the only way I’m able to contact you. I have been getting a steady amount of work done and good amount of money, so I’d say I’ve been doing fine. I’ve made a breakthrough, but it is private. Only the company knows what it is. I might be gone for a bit to work on another project, so I’ve decided to trust you with it. The project is a-“

The recording was paused and then another voice came “That was from a good few months ago,” snapdragon stated. “She has…gone missing now. Come to her office on Saturday, she had some tapes and videos she wanted to show you.” snapdragon quickly hung up without another word, leaving quickly to wash the blood dirt and off her hands, quickly taking amaryllis’s project plans, erasing her name, and replacing it with her own to show the higher ups.

Saturday came quick and the words blackthorn said didn’t help. All they said was a simple “Good luck. And I’m sorry.” The walk there was slow, yet even with the seemingly excruciating pace, time seemed to blur and the laurenstine found herself in the amaryllis’s office with some tapes, a broken tv, and a corpse in the chair. Killed by a nightshade, a ‘thorn’ had pricked the flower’s stem. The amaryllis had lost her former beauty, flies and other plants eating away at her remains, it sickened the laurenstine to her core. She sobbed, threw up, screamed. She already wanted to leave. She took the tv and the tapes and ran to another room, her former office. She denied what she saw.

She decided to throw out some of the plushies she made of amaryllis that day.

Wings of fire tarot part 2, explanations below the cut! Part 1!

The Empress (Glory): this is one that I liked aesthetically and the meaning is a bit of a stretch. The empress stands for motherhood and nurturing which are not exactly traits that Glory outwardly shows. She is fierce and independent. However I think in her role as queen she displays these traits. She cares deeply for each rainwing, which is why she makes a challenge fo the throne in the first place. As she grows into the role, she’s shown as being a just and caring queen who gets to know every one of her subjects, which you could argue is nurturing compared to the previous queens. The card shows a woman sitting in a forest surrounded by animals, which reminded me of Glory in the rain forest with her sloth.

The Queen (Scarlet): she is THE queen of wings of fire. And she does embody some of the negative traits of the card: domineering, need for control, bossiness, greed. She’s a girl boss, ok?

The High Priestess (Clearsight): the high priestess is the card of secret knowledge and intuition, which works well with Clearsight’s advanced future sight powers. She has visions, she knows secrets, but she needs to use her intuition and judgement to sort out the right path. The card shows the priestess sitting between two pillars, so I included them imagining that they are columns in the nightwing palace. The card also has lots of moon imagery.

The Knight (Tsunami): This was one that I knew I wanted to do for Tsunami before I knew what it meant because the role of a knight fits her character so well. There are several different meanings for the knight card depending on its suit, but I found that the knight of wands fits Tsunami best. Energy, passion, and impulsiveness, that’s Tsunami for you.

The Hermit (Winter): Quite literally, Winter does isolate himself from others even in his group of friends. He’s a founder of Sanctuary, but he uses the town to hide out and study scavengers mostly unbothered by others. While early in his arc, he could have embodied some of the cards negative traits (isolation, loneliness), now he is on a journey of soul search and introspection (which are positive traits of the card) while he discovers what he wants in life.

The Chariot (Qibli): Qibli is a very triumphant character. He came from an abusive and neglectful family in a place where he had to fight for everything. His wits and ambition caught the attention of Thorn, who helped him survive the Scorpion den and he became an outclaw. The chariot can stand for overcoming obstacles, ambition, determination, and hard work, which fit with Qibli’s story. Despite his insecurities, he maintains a cheerful attitude.

The Star (Kinkajou): the star can mean many things, including hope, inspiration, spiritual renewal, enlightenment, and opportunities. Kinkajou is a bundle of energy and friendliness, which leads her to be a source of hope for others. To me, she appears enlightened. She doesn’t have much of an arc but she’s a surprising source of wisdom for her friends and brings them together many times.

Justice (Luna): Luna’s arc had a lot to do with justice. She has always been fighting the hive wings and the unjust situation that she grew up in. She believes in an equitable and fair society and portrays it in her art. She is holding flame silk to symbolize the sword in the card. The flame silk can be a weapon, but it was also the trait that marked her as both dangerous and useful. At the end of her book, she has helped to bring about the justice that she was always searching for, but she realizes that the hardest part is that she is unable to change the minds of those who do not agree with her.

“Thank you for letting me crash here,” Torrance said. “I promise I won’t overstay my welcome.”

“Stop,” Nellie returned. She handed her a large glass of Sauvignon Blanc and sat down on the opposite end of the couch, pulling her feet up onto the cushion. “You can stay as long as you need. I’m sure it won’t be long, anyway.”

Torrance laughed dryly to herself as she eagerly lifted the glass to her mouth. “That makes one of us.”

She took a long drink, and Nellie frowned. When Torrance had called and told her she needed a place to stay because she and Ishimori were “taking some time apart,” Nellie had thought she meant just for the night. But when she’d shown up at her apartment just over an hour later—suitcase in tow, eyes red from crying—Nellie had realized it was a bit more serious than just a night.

“Do you want to talk about it?” she asked. “Or do you just want to drink and binge-watch K-dramas?”

Torrance laughed again, a bit more genuine that time. “All of the above.”

Empathy surged in Nellie’s veins. “I didn’t realize you and Ishimori were having issues again.”

“Again,” because Torrance and Ishimori were one of those couples who always seemed to be either hot or cold. Nellie had seen it for herself during the two months she’d crashed in their spare bedroom after she and Zack had broken up. But she’d also seen their love in all the little things they did, in the way they chose each other every single day. From where she was sitting, this break had come out of left field.

But that wasn’t the case for Torrance. “It started not long after you moved out,” she revealed. “I think you were providing a buffer for us, and we didn’t realize it until you were gone.”

Nellie’s frown deepened. So this had been building for a month, then. She had noticed that Torrance hadn’t been her usual self the last few weeks, but she hadn’t thought too much of it—most people weren’t themselves these days. New COVID cases were surging again in Tokyo, and Stardom had just two shows planned for August after only just starting up again at the end of June after a three-month hiatus. So, Nellie had just assumed Torrance was depressed over the general state of things; she hadn’t thought to ask if anything else was going on.

And plus, Nellie had been dealing with her own personal matters lately.

She pulled herself out of her thoughts and refocused on Torrance. “So what exactly started, then?” she asked. “After I moved out.”

“Just, bickering,” Torrance breathed. “Constantly, about everything, about the stupidest, littlest shit. And I’d been hoping it was just a rough patch and that we’d get through it, but we haven’t and now… I’m doubting our entire relationship.”

A weight settled on Nellie’s chest, and she looked regretfully down into her own glass of wine. She could relate all too well.

“It’s exactly like what happened to you and Zack.”

Nellie flicked her eyes back up at her. Torrance was already shaking her head.

“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have said that.”

“No, you’re not wrong,” Nellie ruefully returned. “It is exactly like what happened to me and Zack.” She paused to take a sip of wine, her mouth suddenly dry. “You know you could have talked to me about it.”

“I know,” she quietly said. “I actually almost did call you after Taiji and I got into it last week, but then I realized it was Zack’s birthday and I didn’t want to bother you with my shit when I knew you were probably dealing with your own.”

Nellie’s mouth moved too fast for her brain. “It probably would have been better if you did call.”

There was a beat of silence as they both realized what she’d said. Nellie froze. Torrance noticed.

“Why? Did something happen?”

Nellie shifted uncomfortably.

“Shit, something did happen, didn’t it?” Torrance figured, and Nellie knew there was no avoiding it now. So, she spit it out.

“I slept with Zack.”

Torrance’s jaw unhinged. “On his birthday?”

She nodded.

Torrance stared at her a few seconds longer, mouth agape. “Well, I’m glad I didn’t call, then,” she remarked.

“No, it’s not good, Torr,” Nellie woefully returned—but Torrance was already asking her next question.

“Did it happen here or at his place?”

Nellie sighed and ran a hand through her hair. She might as well just give her all the details. “His place. I texted him happy birthday because it felt like the right thing to do; we’re still friends. But then we started talking, and he said he was getting takeout from this udon place we both love, and asked if I wanted to come over. It was only like six-thirty, so I figured it was fine and I could leave before it turned into hook-up hours, but then one thing led to another and… yeah.”

She took a gulp of wine, her heart pulsing in her neck. In truth, she knew she should have declined Zack’s invitation that night; she should have called Torrance and had her talk her down. But she was having a harder time moving on from Zack than she was willing to admit. Some days, she gave herself grace for it. Of course she was having a hard time—she’d uprooted her whole life and moved across the world with the person she loved only to have it all fall apart. Anyone would have a hard time moving on from that.

But other days—like today, the entire last week—she felt like a fool.

“Was it good, at least?” Torrance asked, cutting into her thoughts.

“Torr,” Nellie breathed, half a smile on her lips. “You’re not helping.”

Torrance pulled her mouth to the side of her face. “Well, I guess we both need tonight.” She let out a tired sigh. “Please tell me you have ice cream or chocolate or something else we can eat our feelings with.”

Nellie pushed out her bottom lip. “I don’t. But there’s a 7-Eleven a few blocks away.”

* * * *

Neither of them was concerned about impressing anyone, and a few minutes later they both left Nellie’s apartment in oversized t-shirts, bike shorts, messy buns, and masks to walk the few blocks to 7-Eleven as the last remnants of twilight died in the darkening sky. And it didn’t take long for Torrance to resume her line of questioning.

“Have you and Zack talked about it at all?”

Nellie snorted. “No. I left practically as soon as the sun came up. It was my first walk of shame since back when I was hooking up with Riley,” she lowly added.

“You snuck out?” Torrance balked.

“No, I didn’t sneak out,” Nellie clarified. “I told him I was leaving. But he was still half-asleep, so.” She left it at that and gestured to an alleyway on their right. “It’s this way.”

They cut into the alleyway, lined with tightly packed open-air bars and restaurants. Paper lanterns and electric signs hung every few feet advertising food and drink in kanji, but the atmosphere wasn’t as lively as it would have been under normal circumstances. It made Nellie recall one of her very first dates with Zack at an izakaya just like these, a smile on her face as she turned toward him on a barstool, his hand on her thigh—

“Would you like your cards read, my dears?”

Nellie and Torrance both slowed to a stop. An older woman with kind, dark eyes stood outside a stall toward the end of the alley. Nellie looked up at the sign overhead; in bright neon letters it read in English, “PSYCHIC TAROT PALMISTRY TEA LEAVES.” Her brow furrowed in confusion. This stall hadn’t been there any of the previous times she’d walked through here.

Torrance hesitated. “Oh, I don’t know—”

But the woman cut her off. “Yes, come. You especially need a love reading; I can tell from your aura.”

She beckoned them into the stall. Torrance and Nellie exchanged an uncertain glance.

“Come, come!” the woman repeated. “You want to know if you and your partner are too incompatible, yes?”

Torrance’s eyes widened. Nellie could see her overthinking it in real time.

“Okay, that’s a really general statement,” she quietly attempted to assuage her.

“There’s no need to be afraid,” the woman said. “The cards will only tell you what you need to hear.”

Torrance and Nellie tapped eyes again. “Yeah, that’s what worries me,” Torrance muttered under her breath; but she moved forward into the stall. Nellie followed. She had to admit, she was intrigued—and there was something comforting about the old woman’s presence.

There wasn’t much to her set-up; just a small folding table covered by a woven tapestry with one chair on one side and two on the other, a neatly stacked deck of tarot cards set in the middle. An electric tea kettle and paper cups sat in the corner, presumably for those who wished to have their tea leaves read. They all sat down around the table. The woman looked at Torrance first.

“All I need are your name and the name of your partner, nothing more.”

Torrance shifted; so they were jumping right into it. Her voice wavered a bit as she answered. “Um, I’m Torrance, and my boyfriend’s given name is Taiji.”

The woman hummed as she nodded and reached for the cards. She held them intentionally in her hands for a moment, her eyes closed, focused; and then she reopened them and started to shuffle. Overhand, varying her pace—sometimes quick, sometimes slow—until one of the cards popped out from the pile, making itself known. She laid it facedown on the table, and then repeated the process two more times. When she was done, she set the rest of the cards off to the side. The air in the room seemed to thicken as she did.

“This is a traditional three-card love spread,” she explained, deliberately pronouncing each word. “Many people think, ‘the more cards, the better.’ But with too many cards, the message can become muddy and lost. A three-card spread cuts right to the heart of the situation.”

She placed her finger on the card on the right. “This card represents you.” She moved to the card on the left. “This card represents your partner.” Finally, she put her finger on the card in the middle. “And this card represents your relationship together.”

“Okay,” Torrance breathed, nervous. But the woman smiled at her, and even though her mouth was hidden behind her mask they could see it in her eyes, sympathetic and kind.

“Again, the cards will not tell you anything you do not need to hear,” she repeated; and then, without warning, she flipped over the card on the right. It displayed a striking graphic image of an angel pouring water between two cups. At the bottom, it read in capital letters, TEMPERANCE.

“Ah, a major arcana card!” she noted. “This is an important message.”

Torrance’s brow furrowed with anxiety. The woman went on.

“Now, the card looks upright to you because we are sitting opposite one another. But because I am the one doing the reading, it is reversed. And Temperance reversed indicates that you must look inward first before you can move forward.”

Nellie glanced at Torrance out of the corner of her eye. She fidgeted in her seat again, the corners of her mouth turned down. But she remained quiet, interested in what else the woman had to say. And so, she continued.

“Something is imbalanced in your life, and you must think about what it is that you truly want. Not anyone else—you. It is the only way to find harmony again.”

Torrance went rigid. Clearly, the woman’s words resonated with her; perhaps too much.

“It’s not a bad card,” Nellie cut in. “It’s just saying you should take a step back and figure things out. You’re doing that now.”

The woman smiled. “Your friend is right. And if you’re doing this, you are already on the forward path.”

Torrance nodded in understanding. “Okay,” she said again.

“Let’s see Taiji’s card now…” The woman reached for the left card and flipped it over. It pictured a robed king holding a longsword in his hands: the KING OF SWORDS.

The woman considered the card for a few seconds. And then she asked, “Does Taiji have very high standards?”

“Yes,” Nellie immediately commented. Torrance rolled her eyes; but she didn’t disagree.

“Yeah, he does,” she dolefully confirmed. “For everything.”

The woman nodded. “The King of Swords is someone who is very controlled and ambitious, and sometimes that can come off as…” she fluttered her fingers, searching for the right word. “Overbearing—cold—especially in relationships, as they tend to be reserved in showing their emotions. To them, love means pushing their partner to do and be their very best, and they desire someone who will do the same for them. When the two partners are aligned in this concept, it makes for a very strong and beneficial relationship.

“But,” she pointed meaningfully back at the Temperance card. “Do not forget what Temperance has told you. If your desires and needs don’t align with Taiji’s, then it will benefit neither of you.”

Torrance gnawed on the inside of her lip. Nellie couldn’t think of a positive way to spin that message.

“Alright,” the woman said with a single nod. “Now, your relationship together…”

She flipped over the middle card. A knight sat atop a gallant horse, a cup in his outstretched hand. The KNIGHT OF CUPS.

“Hm,” the woman remarked.

“What?” Torrance asked, leaning forward, an edge of panic to her voice. “What does that mean?”

The woman thought for a beat. “Well,” she began, “the Knight of Cups could mean one of two things here, both very positive. First, it could indicate that you and Taiji will take the positive actions necessary for you to move forward together as a couple… or, alternatively, it could represent someone new coming into your life. Someone much more emotionally in-tune with your needs than the King of Swords.”

Nellie snapped her eyes at Torrance. She sat frozen, shocked; but Nellie swore it looked like someone specific had popped into her head.

The woman noticed it, too. “Ah… is there someone else already who could be the Knight of Cups?”

“What?” Torrance reacted. “No,” she shook her head, cleared her throat. “I’m just surprised. This is… eye-opening, for sure.”

The woman smiled again, her dark eyes wrinkling at the corners. “Good! That is the cards’ entire purpose! And now, we will see what they have to say to you.”

Nellie snapped to attention. That meant her.

“You are single, yes?” the woman asked. “Newly single.”

Goosebumps prickled over Nellie’s skin. How had she figured that? “About three months now, yeah,” she returned.

“Mm,” the woman hummed and nodded again. “Then you have a choice. Either I can do a general love reading, or, if there is someone specific on your mind,” she said this as if she already knew, “you can give me their name and I will do a reading like your friend’s.”

Nellie hesitated, a lump in her throat. If Zack knew she was doing this, he would give her so much shit. He was a hardline atheist; he didn’t believe in anything but provable facts, something that had been a point of contention in their relationship. She had always believed in something more, some force bigger than herself.

And she wanted to know.

“His name is Zack.”

The woman picked up the deck. “And yours?”

“Oh. Nellie.”

“Thank you,” the woman nodded, and she started to shuffle.

The first card popped out almost immediately; she pulled it from the deck and laid it on the right. A few seconds later, the second card emerged, and she laid it on the left. Not long after, the final card seemed to jump from the deck of its own volition. The woman laughed lightly to herself as she placed it in the center.

“That was quick.”

Nellie rubbed clammy palms on her legs. She didn’t know if that was a good or bad sign.

The woman reached for the first card. “Your card,” she said; and as she flipped it over, Nellie was struck by the imagery. A large red heart pierced through its center by three swords, storm clouds in the background.

She scoffed to herself. That was a little on-the-nose.

“Ah… the Three of Swords reversed,” the woman noted. “You are having trouble moving on from the relationship that recently ended.”

It was a statement, not a question. Nellie stiffened. “You could say that,” she quietly returned.

“Mm,” the woman hummed again. “It is not so bad, though. The Three of Swords indicates that you need to go through this period of grieving to move forward. But you must be careful not to live in that grief and get stuck. You must keep yourself open to what lies ahead.”

But what lies ahead? Nellie wanted to ask. Maybe the cards would tell her.

“Now Zack’s card,” the woman continued. She picked up the left card and flipped it over. A knight charged forward on a horse, a staff in his hand. At the bottom, it read KNIGHT OF WANDS—and like Nellie’s card, it was reversed.

“He’s the person you recently broke up with, yes?” the woman asked.

Nellie blanched. How did she keep doing that? “Yeah,” she confirmed. “After almost two years. We moved here together in January and then… yeah.” She looked down, surprised at her candor. Maybe she’d just needed to say it.

The woman studied her a beat longer before looking back down at the card. “Like the King of Swords in the previous reading, the Knight of Wands is highly ambitious. But he is more impulsive than disciplined. He struggles with impatience, and sometimes fails to think before he speaks.”

“Do you know Zack personally?” Nellie quipped. The woman’s eyes crinkled in amusement before she continued.

“However, because the card is reversed, it indicates that he’s been feeling very frustrated. There are obstacles in his way, ones he cannot control, and he’s unsure how to proceed. Additionally, his frustration might not have anything to do with your relationship at all, but it affected it nonetheless. He must reconcile all this before he can move forward to what he wants.”

Nellie curled her hands into fists on her legs. There had been extraneous strains on her and Zack’s relationship that had played a factor in their break-up, of that there was no doubt. Living together for the first time in a foreign country where neither of them spoke the language, in the midst of a fucking pandemic, unable to do their job, the thing they loved, the thing that had brought them together in the first place. It had piled up on top of them, and they’d broken under the weight of it all.

“Does this resonate with you?” the woman asked. Again, Nellie had a sense that she already knew the answer.

“Yeah, it does,” she said. “But I don’t know if I’m part of what he wants.”

The woman’s eyes sparkled. “Well, let’s see if the final card will tell us.”

She reached for the third and final card, and Nellie reflexively held her breath as she watched her flip it over. The first thing she noticed was the bright red background. Then, a man and a woman, each holding a cup in their hand, the man reaching out toward the woman. TWO OF CUPS, it read.

“I believe you are part of what he wants,” the woman said. “The Two of Cups. This a soulmate card, my dear.”

Nellie tried to pay the woman for the readings, but she refused the money. “The spirits had me seek you out,” she said. Nellie didn’t argue. She just thanked her and practically ran out of the stall, her head spinning.

Soulmates? Her and Zack? Please. She didn’t even think he believed in the concept.

“Wait up!” Torrance called as they exited the alleyway. Nellie spotted the 7-Eleven up ahead and started walking faster. Torrance had to jog to catch up with her. “Well, that was intense,” she remarked.

Nellie didn’t respond.

“Nell.”

“What?”

“That woman just said you and Zack are soulmates, and you’re clearly feeling some type of way about it.”

They came to an intersection, and Nellie jabbed the crosswalk button with her fingers. “She also said that card didn’t necessarily signify romantic soulmates.”

“Okay, but that was a love reading.”

Nellie kept her gaze trained on the crosswalk signal, willing it to change. “It was probably a bunch of bullshit,” she dismissed.

But Torrance shrugged a shoulder. “I don’t know, she seemed pretty intuitive to me.”

“Oh yeah?” Nellie returned. “Who’s the Knight of Cups?”

She looked probingly down at her. Torrance blanched. “Okay fine, we won’t talk about it.”

But long after they’d returned to the apartment, loaded up with ice cream, Japanese pastries, and more wine, Nellie still couldn’t stop thinking about it. And then, two more glasses deep and well into a Netflix binge session, she got a text. From Zack.

Are you free?

She nudged Torrance and wordlessly showed her the message. Her eyes bulged.

“Now he chooses to mince words?”

Nellie rolled her eyes. “I’m telling him I’m not,” she said and started to type back—but Torrance stopped her.

“No, don’t! You two need to talk.”

Nellie’s brow furrowed in disagreement. “I’m not leaving you here by yourself to go talk to Zack.”

“What, don’t trust me with your stuff?” she joked.

“That’s not—”

“I know,” Torrance interjected. “And seriously, I’ll be fine. Please go talk to him. We don’t both need to be miserable tonight.”

Nellie ran an uncertain hand through her hair. On the contrary, there was no guarantee that talking to Zack wouldn’t just make her more miserable. But Torrance was right. They did need to talk.

“Fine,” she said. “But I’m coming back.”

She didn’t bother changing, but she did pull her long, dark hair out from its messy bun and comb it out with her fingers, double-checking in the bathroom mirror that she looked decent, and then she was out the door. Zack lived two buildings over in the same complex, in what used to be their apartment. Nellie admitted it wasn’t ideal still living so close to him, but options were limited in the current market, and she hadn’t wanted to overstay her welcome with Torrance and Ishimori. Besides, she liked this neighborhood; she was familiar with it. She needed that more than ever right now.

Less than five minutes and she was at his door. She’d never responded to his text, she realized, but it was just as well. He wanted to see her; at least, it had sounded like he did. So, she raised her hand and knocked.

It wasn’t long before Zack answered. He seemed surprised to see her. “So I guess you are free, then?”

A swell of embarrassment flushed Nellie’s face. She was wrong, she shouldn’t have just showed up. Maybe he’d just wanted to talk on the phone, over text—not face-to-face. She must look like an overeager fool.

“Sorry, I should’ve—”

“No,” he cut her off with a shake of his head. “Come in.”

He pulled the door open further, and she gave him a tight smile and moved inside. Soft music floated out from the record player in the corner of the living room; a half-full glass of beer sat on the coffee table. So he’d been drinking, too.

“Do you want anything to drink?”

She looked back at him as he shut the door. “Um, water, actually. I had some wine and I’m starting to get a headache.”

“Ah,” he smirked. “Wine drunk. So that explains you just turning up.”

He disappeared into the kitchen, and Nellie let out a breath. She needed to relax. She moved around to the couch and sank down into the cushions, listening to the music. It was one of Zack’s favorite bands; they’d seen them live in England before all this. She’d gotten him that record player for Christmas. It made her wonder what was going through his head before he’d texted her.

“Here you go.”

Zack reappeared with a glass of ice water. She thanked him and took a long drink as he sat down next to her. It wasn’t until she set the glass atop a coaster on the coffee table and sat back that she realized how close they were.

“So were you just drinking by yourself?” he asked. Cheeky like always.

Nellie pursed her lips. “Not that that would be anything to judge someone for these days... but no. Torrance is over.”

Zack’s brow furrowed. “She is over? And you just left?”

“She practically shoved me out the door, trust me,” Nellie returned, and the implication was obvious: she’d told Torrance what had happened. The mood shifted like the needle on the record player to the next track on the vinyl. There was no avoiding it now.

“So, why’d you want to know if I was free?” she opened.

He laughed shortly. “Is it not obvious?”

“No, it is,” she said. And then, more quietly, “Where’s your head at?”

Zack sighed and ran a hand through his hair. “Honestly, I don’t know, Nell. But it shouldn’t have happened, should it?”

Nellie’s heart dropped to her stomach. She felt the same didn’t she? Then why did it hurt so much hearing him say it? “I guess not,” she returned.

“I’m not saying that I regret it,” he quickly clarified. “I don’t, at all. Nell, I would take you to my bed right now.”

“But?”

“But. There’s a reason we broke up. Reasons, plural.”

Nellie’s nose burned. She thought of the tarot reading again, the Knight of Wands reversed, all the outside stresses that they’d been under, that they were still under. She wanted to bring it up to him—the circumstances, not the tarot reading; he’d laugh her out of the apartment if she brought up the tarot reading—but it felt like it wouldn’t make a difference.

And yet. “What if the reasons were all extraneous?”

Zack looked confused. “What?”   

She pivoted to face him on the couch, and her knee bumped his. “I mean, what if the reasons we broke up weren’t actually issues between us, but outside issues that affected us?”

He sighed again. “Nell, we were fighting about everything.”

“Yeah, because we were cooped up here together, unable to work, unable to go anywhere or do anything, really. You don’t think that maybe that had something to do with it, that maybe it was just the circumstances we were under and not actually us?”

“I’m sure it did have something to do with it, but what if it just sped up the inevitable?”

The air was knocked from Nellie’s lungs. Was that really how he felt? “Oh.” She was a fool.

“Darling,” Zack started—and then he caught himself, realized what he’d said. Nellie’s eyes steeled.

“Don’t call me that right now.” She stood up from the couch. “You’re right; it shouldn’t have happened.”

She started for the door.

“Nell—”

“I should get back to Torrance,” she said, and with that she walked out.

Young Justice Season 1 Thoughts. + some spoilers for those who haven't seen it.

E 1-6: Robin in this series is more tolerable than Robin from Teen Titans. He's obsessed with being the leader as always but he actually accepts that Aqualad is more suited to be their team leader. That was a surprising twist. I thought there would be an endless power struggle. Aqualad was obviously going to be the eventual leader because he's always the one that keeps calm while everyone acts juvenile, and he focuses on the mission. And he officially took the role, or 'burden,' when he took command and told the team what steps to take in E4 Drop Zone. But I absolutely love that Robin gleefully points out that since he's the leader, it would also be his responsibility to report the outcome to Justice League. That was so in-character for Robin. He accepts it but he has to rub it in a bit. M'gaan is like Starfire from the Teen Titans series; very sweet and charming and bubbly, a little boy-crazy, and green, but with Raven's powers and wardrobe. Artemis grew on me but I didn't like her vibes initially and idk why. Maybe because she was keeping a secret and was hella sus. I wondered if she would be like Terra. Kid Flash is what you expect him to be. He's the jokester of the group who rises to the occasion when needed. He's like the Beast Boy of the group. Superboy is like the Incredible Hulk of the series but he looks like Kevin from Ben 10 and M'gaan kinda looks like Gwen.

During these first episodes, new characters are introduced and the team is kinda finding themselves a bit. It's relatively kid-friendly and lighter than the later episodes. It's like the first two films of the Harry Potter franchise. One thing I love is seeing supervillains and characters I know from the Teen Titans like Lex Luthor, the Brain and the Gorilla, aside from Robin himself.

E7 Denial: I love episodes with magic and tarot. This 106-year-old man enters a tarot reading shop and obviously, the tarot reader is a fraud. But the man gets kidnapped by Alexandro from a 90's love novel cover and tortured. That's right, tortured while a kid with devil horns watches and claps. This was dark. So, the kid is God of Chaos, and an absolute menace, and he's trying to steal the gold helmet which anchors the God of Order. I could go on and on about how goooood the fight sequences are for each episode...and I'm going to. But this one left me speechless. I have no words for how good this was. It has Charmed vibes, with some Gods included as well. This is one episode I won't spoil because my emotions are overwhelming my ability to articulate.

E8 Downtime: The Queen is *insert fire emoji* She is the coolest. She (I don't know what this is called but I'm assuming) astral-projects a giant Octopus, a Stingray and Electric Eels. I mean, I want to be her. The fight sequences were epic. Unbelievable. The Princess was cool too. I knew instantly when Garth said, "you have to tell him," that he meant they were dating. Otherwise, Aqualad wouldn't have a reason to stay on land. TBH, I suspected the King's bro to be behind the intrusion. But I love this episode. Mostly for the fight scenes and also because it reinforces Aqualad's character and why he's fit to be a leader. He walks away. He wishes them well and walks away. Show me any character that's fit to be a leader who doesn't accept losing a loved one to another love interest and remains classy. He has Captain America vibes.

E9 Bereft: The team has lost their memories and are scattered across the desert. They cut from one character to the next showing how each member deals with the circumstances. M'gaan is the first one shown, she wakes up and doesn't remember how she got on Earth to begin with. Young Robin seems to adapt very quickly, probably from years of working with Batman. I love that they showed that. M'gaan finds Superboy, and he has reverted back to his beast form. Megan is the first one to get hers back by tapping into them Confucius style. The young arrow girl Artemis is awaken by Speedy a.k.a Kid Flash. They also have fantastic chemistry. She stops to shoot arrows at the tanks and he carries her away from the danger. It was so sweet. Later the four meet and Megan gives them back their memories. It's so funny that as soon as they regain their memories, Artemis and Kid Flash hate each other again. At this point, they realize that Aqualad is missing. They look for him, find him, and he's dehydrated obviously. Even before they found him, I was yelling that at the screen. They discuss flying him back to the ship and Megan is like, "No! Superboy (the nearly indestructible clone of Superman) needs me." and flies away. She was like he's hot and that's more important, and leaves the teams to drag Aqualad's body on a carney to the ship. Megan has a face off or mind off with the big brained dude...and wins. They bring the giant sphere tech that they rescued back with them. And the big brained dude is working for the "light." For supposed evil beings puppeteering a bunch of supervillains to do their dirty work for them, they were pretty mellow learning that big brain screwed up and lost the sphere. The series is hardly for kids. They show a 106-year-old man being tortured, lots of kissing with those wet smooching sounds, and yet, the supposed bad guys were like, "it's ok. Don't worry. You screwed up but we prepared more." They were like parents trying to comfort their kid.

E10 Targets: Why is Cheshire low-key sexy/hot? I'm here for it - expect for her hair when she puts on the mask. It creates a signature look for sure, but I hate it. It looks like she has the Scar-looking Lion mane from Hercules on her head. BTW, I'm sensing A LOT of chemistry between her and Red Arrow. I feel so toxic for shipping them but I do. Red Arrow is like Robin from Teen Titans: so hung up on being independent but he's a little more likeable, especially in this episode. I'm really excited to see Superboy and M'gaan in high school. As intriguing as the plotline is, I'm most interested in seeing how the Young Justice does in high school. I want to see more of it.

E11 Terrors: They finally kiss! Omg. It was hot! But also so funny because they were both disguised as brother and sister. I kind of like the Ice Kid. He's kinda pitiful. He seems like someone who would be nice if he were brought up in a different family. Unlike his sister, he didn't seem rotten to the core. He's still a criminal.

E12-13: I low-key hated episode 12 because of how lonely Artemis seemed. But the scene where she rescues the team; the slow-mo back flip and shooting of the arrow, ugh, soooo good. It's the one thing I remember from this episode. This is the first time I've seen the male Captain Marvel. He is bulky! and friendly. And at the end of episode 13, I find out why; It's a literal kid! That was so amusing. During this episode, they find out that Aqua kept a secret from them, to keep them from falling apart but, and I saw this coming, the fact that he kept this from them is what made them all run off in different directions. Every plotline needs that defining moment; first the team is trying to find their rhythm, there's conflict, they reach an understanding, it's harmonious for a while, but there needs to be moment that cements the leader's role and everyone else's in the team. And this episode seems to be that. The conflict that tests the team's faith and respect for Aqua as captain as well as his capability to lead. And now, things are gonna get serious!

E14: Shit is going down. Beloved supervillains like the Joker and Poison Ivy finally make their appearances. The team is headed to Gotham City in the Bio-ship but Lucius Malfoy brain-waves it down into the river.

[Update]

E15 Humanity: They kidnapped Zatara's daughter Zatanna who is really pretty. And I feel like she has chemistry or grabbed the attention of Aqualad and Robin. They fight and Red Tornado tells them to play dead. And the red robot guy is like, "I have his memories and incredible strength, can't beat me," and Zatanna pulls on over on him because Red Tornado doesn't have her moves on file. And she shuts the robot's eyes and flirts with Robin. I'm like, "Focus people focus!" They're fighting a villain whose strength surpasses their own and they're flirting.

This scene is so sad. Those epic moments in Avengers that make me want to burst with tears, this was one of them but for DC. Them slowly melting away, sacrificing themselves to pull Torpedo down, plus the music. And to top it all of, Torpedo says "father would be so disappointed." Ugh. Tug on my heartstrings why don't you.

Ironically, while they look down on humanity, their flawed logic, Torpedo's complex need to kill is father and yet somehow still carry out his wishes in death, and how quickly they changed their minds makes this one of the most human moments of the series. And now, I understand why it's named "humanity."

Aside from that, I am shipping Robin and Katanna.

They really nailed the wholesome vibe of Captain Marvel in this and the fact that it's a child underneath the bulky, mature exterior makes me chuckle, every time, every appearance.

E16-17: I knew it. M'gaan is dangerous af. I get they're passionate, hormonal teenagers in a way but Superboy and M'gaan are annoying me in Failsafe. Sphere is so cool. I'm glad she got to stay on earth. Imagine showing how cool she is and then taking it away.

E18: What in the supernatural? Is that a ghost? An actual ghost? I love this plotline. It was a nice episode for Halloween. A different vibe from the previous episodes. It had that eerie charmed, witchcraft vibe to it. I like that. It was refreshing and nice break after the gravity in the previous episode(s). Oh, and Justice for Shazaam! Poor kid wanted to join the party and they were like, "oh, you're partying on your own?" I wish he could have gone. So sad.

E19 Misplaced: The adults have vanished. I love that Robin advised Zatanna to "stay whelmed." I love that and I'm gonna use it semi-regularly from now on. There's a child crying the car and Superboy rescues him and then the baby is wearing a onesie with a Superman logo on it. He touches the Superman logo on Superboy t-shirt. It was a sweet little moment that deserved an "awwww."

Side note: This has more to do Netflix than Young Justice I presume but, when they showed the Young Justice League streaming in Foreign (to the US) countries such as France and China in their native languagesm the subtitles read [incantation]. They said "protègez-les" ("Protect them") and the subtitle says "Incantation." So funny.

This series is so well-made so far, it's really like the Harry Potter franchise, and the avengers franchise. It has a nice balance between action and thrill and wholesome sweet moments, between humor and heaviness. I'm watching Supernatural simultaneously and so far, I'm on season 5 and it has gotten sooooo unbelievably heavy that I'm not sure how or if I can finish all the way through to season 15! It feels like the final season already. Oof. Anyways, back to Young Justice.

E20 Coldhearted: Speedy is a Sagittarius it seems. I think not sure. It's is birthday and everything is going so well for him so I thought that he's in a coma induced dream. The team "surprised" him after he kept hinting at it, (sounds exactly like my Sagittarius friend) and made two cakes. When he asked what they would eat, M'gaan very calmly said that they would split the cupcake. That is so cute! Artemis is very jelly of M'gaan. It's fair. She's dating Superboy whom Artemis was into when they first met, and she also has the attention of Speedy. I love how focused Robin is on Katanna. Love a loyal man boy ew person. I'm not sure how to rave about this episode besides reciting the entire plotline. Kudos to KF for thinking of saving the girl despite his short attention span, which makes sense now seeing that he's a Sagittarius. And Lucius Malfoy has had his diplomatic immunity revoked and has been sent away to Belle Reve prison. The ending of the episode suggests that the ice family is gonna break free and reek ice cold havoc soon. I'm intrigued.

E21 Image: Batman shows Canary a video of Conner aka Superboy fighting her and then kissing. Canary's look-a-like hubby is mad until the Canary in the video shapeshifts and is revealed to be M'gaan. Understandably Canary is mad and talks to M about this. The latter is guilty. This is like those deepfakes.

The president of Qurac was once against Queen B and her harsh regime but is now, siding with her and has agreed to let her rule both nations as one. Considering the general theme of the episode, one can only assume that the President of Qurac is actually a shapeshifter while the real one is held hostage somewhere. If it weren't for the theme, he's probably brainwashed.

Aqualad is helping Aquaman so now Robin is logically the interim team captain and he's upset since everything that went down in Failsafe. Meanwhile, upon hearing the news KF goes to high five Robin. I love that in the beginning of the series, they were both fighting for the Captain space and now KF is so supportive of Robin and his former ambition while Robin is obviously still healing from the simulation in Failsafe.

Love this friendship.

Viktor: Mage Foreshadowing

Though there was a lot of clever foreshadowing for Viktor’s future in season 1, I want to address the imagery of the mage specifically. Our first reveal of the mage is during Jayce’s trial where Heimerdinger warns of the potential destruction that magic can create. 

Heimerdinger: "I've seen this power in the wrong hands. It corrupts. It consumes. Lays waste to civilizations." 

There is no particular indication that this is linked to Viktor yet beyond him being present and clearly intrigued by Jayce’s speech in favor of pursuing magic.

During the presentation of the hexcore, Heimerdinger sees the imagery of the mage again, this time shown within a Void-like structure inside the hexcore. If you listen carefully, you can actually hear Viktor’s theme playing here as well, giving more evidence to prove that the figure he’s speaking of will be him. Heimerdinger reiterates his claims of its destructive power: 

Heimerdinger: “I’ve seen nations destroyed by a single seed and it looked exactly like this.” 

He then studies Viktor, confirming that it’s already starting to have an effect on him despite him not yet beginning the experiments on himself. 

Heimerdinger: “Viktor, something’s different, what did you do? It’s that thing. It must be destroyed!”

After the hexcore has already absorbed some of his blood, we get a scene where Viktor is sitting and watching it, transfixed, while laced within the same Void-like structures as shown before - a brilliant way of showing that his mind has already been entangled in its webs and referencing the previous image. 

As a side note, I think his crutch here and in other scenes of the show is meant to look reminiscent of a mage’s staff.

As Viktor begins to prepare himself for his first transmutation, we intercut to Jayce looking through a book that features a familiar image: a painting of the same powerful, glowing mage above the destruction of a city as shown in episode 2. It’s no coincidence that this was shown right as Viktor is about to take his first step to becoming that very being. 

Though it might just a coincidence, the rune Viktor is etching onto his leg brace is diamond shaped and very similar to the shape of the glow around the mage as well. The rune itself may have some special meaning that I’m not aware of so feel free to share if you do!

Though not the same image that we’ve seen thus far, we get another visual interpretation of a mage (with three arms) on a tarot card shown after Viktor receives his terminal diagnosis, cleverly foreshadowing his future transformation. Though I won’t go into detail about the meaning of the cards (I’m not very familiar with the subject and others have already discussed them at length) the death card could not only support the news of his diagnosis, but also potentially foreshadow the death he will bring, starting with Sky. 

Beyond physically seeing the mage in relation to him, we also get a few lines that foreshadow a darker fate for Viktor regarding magic. In episode 2, there’s a scene where Viktor and Heimerdinger discuss Jayce’s experiments and Heimerdinger says: 

Heimerdinger: “Magic is far too dangerous in the wrong hands.” 

(Which ties directly into Heimerdinger’s previous line: “I’ve seen this power in the wrong hands,” regarding mages). We then see Viktor promptly stealing Jayce’s notebook, more than likely foreshadowing that his are the wrong hands that Heimerdinger warns will bring danger and destruction.

Based on the lore from League of Legends and the foreshadowing in the show, Viktor is undoubtedly going to transform into the Machine Herald, but whether that’s the destructive, civilization ending threat Heimerdinger warns of or if the show will perhaps continue its trend of taking characters to unexpected places remains to be seen. Will Viktor surprise us, fight back against the corrupting influence of the hexcore and find a way to use it for good? Or will he be unable to escape his dark fate and repeat the history Heimerdinger so fears?

For you, I’m seeing the Divine is asking you to release the current way in which you operate in your relationships. One of the first things that call out to me is that belief that some people hold that you are who you hang around. I feel for some of you that your capacity for growth is extremely limited to the people you hang around. I’m hearing some of the people around you fear your potential. They may sense that you have the ability to do something amazing with their life and they’re afraid. I want to clarify that this person isn’t a bad person and they don’t have poor intentions. They may even care deeply for you. This is about them and their own limitations they hold within themselves. They fear not being able to grow and discover who they are. I also want to clarify that you shouldn’t take their personal issues on yourself. Every being is responsible for their own karmic clearing. Trying to take on the Karmic clearing of another person will only drag you down. I’m actually hearing one of the best ways you can help them is to create space and grow into your potential. Seeing you do so despite the obstacles may have a positive impact on them. 

I’m also hearing an additional message that some of you are being limited because you're waiting for the support of the people around you. One of the biggest lessons I have learned in my life is to take leaps of faith despite what the people around me have to say. This is about you just trusting the call from the Divine and your Gut. Sometimes the Divine only gives us the vision, and the people around us aren’t going to see it or get it. I feel it is necessary for you to move your focus and attention away from where you’re not seeing support and recognition and start putting energy into something new so that you can attract those people who are meant to SEE you. 

I want to take a deep dive into the energy of the Dog card. This card comes from my Animal Medicine deck. You received the dog medicine. One of the things dogs are known for are their loyalty. I hear all the time people say “we don’t deserve dogs” because of how selfless and loving they are. I feel it’s important that you take this saying and apply it to yourself. Who are you being loyal to who show signs that they are undeserving of it. Notice the dog has shown up in reverse. This is telling me that it’s important that you take your loyalty back and don’t give it away without conditions and boundaries.

Oracle Cards- Fear, Movement, and Coyote 

One of the first things I heard for you was fight or flight. I actually feel you guys are actually in the state of fawn. This is true if you find yourself frustrated with yourself because you feel you should be doing something, but you can’t seem to do it. I want to clarify that I’m not a medical professional, and I don’t have the power to diagnose anyone. What I’m hearing for you to release is your current mindsight surrounding what you desire or what’s in alignment for you. I personally hate when people say that “it’s about your mindset. All you have to do is change your mindset and your good.” Because I feel that saying things like that doesn’t help. Most people with self limiting mindsets most likely are already aware that their mindset about themselves is negative, and sayings like this only give them more reasons to be extremely self critical. Also sayings like this don't offer any real support. Also sayings like this don’t take into account the YEARS of conditioning someone may have received to have this type of mindset to begin with. 

One of the main reasons you have these limiting beliefs is because on a subconscious level these limiting beliefs are keeping you safe. Right now your mind is convinced that stagnation or your status quo is where you’re safest. This current life that's not in alignment with your highest self is all you’ve ever known and you’ve become accustomed to. Again I feel you know what you need to do to open a pathway for yourself. But the thought of having that thing despite how badly you desire it is terrifying to the shadow aspect of yourself. 

One of the best tools I’ve used when it comes to this is confronting these beliefs. Instead of trying to ignore these beliefs or mindsets I confront them and come face to face with them. I recommend that you write out a list of your desires, and then write out a list of the things blocking you from that. I feel writing these things out on paper represents being able to clear these blockages in your mind. Another thing that I feel is useful is to stop refocusing the way you think about your desires. Instead of seeing you trying to work to align to them or earn them. Because I feel this may be the root of your beliefs. Feeling like you’re currently not good enough for your desires and have to earn them. Try to see your desires as trying to reach you. Your desires want you, but what’s keeping them from reaching you is your feelings or beliefs of not deserving them. Your desires see this as you rejecting them. The fact that you know what you desire is proof enough that these desires are for you. I like to see ideas as living things that find us and personally seek us out. 

I want to focus on the coyote specifically because it comes from my Animal Medicine Tarot deck. The coyote animal is offering the medicine your soul needs to release this. The coyote spirit is considered the master trickster, but the thing that often falls victim to the Coyote’s tricks is the Coyote himself. You guys are the coyote that is constantly tricking yourself into believing that you’re not deserving of your desires. But the twist is that you also have the ability to trick yourself into believing that you ARE deserving of your desires.

Oracle Cards- Mystery, Frustration, and the Whale

When tuning into your energy I feel you guys are in the adolescent stage of trying to build something for yourself. The thing is, that I feel you are trying to build multiple different things for yourself. You’re trying to build strong and sturdy foundations when it comes to your financial, spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical aspects of your life. You might be trying to get healthy, date, and build multiple different side hustles into sustainable forms of income. Whatever, the situation is I feel what the Divine is trying to get across is that you may be trying to build too much at one time. I feel that is why the tower is here. I feel the tower is the potential result of what could happen if you don’t slow down. I feel you may be trying to build multiple different towers at once. You want all your towers to be strong and sturdy. I actually see you building and stacking your towers right next to each other. I see you being organized and having a method to build your towers, but despite your organization, because you’re building so many towers at once, you’re bound to mess up something. And when one of your towers begins to fall so will the others. 

I’m also hearing another thing you’re being asked to release is you belief that you have to be in control with everything in your life all the time. Sometimes the only way the Divine can bless us is if we let go, get out of our own way, and surrender. The analogy I like to use is if you're caught in a stream and in your state of panic you feel you have to go against the stream. Going against the stream seems safer because you don’t know where exactly the stream is going to carry you. Going against the stream will exhaust you and if you do manage to go against the stream you might find yourself facing a bear and you're too exhausted to fight it. The Divine knew this bear was there the whole time which is why this stream was trying to get you to a safe place. Take this and apply it to your personal situation. A lot of people assume that by surrendering we are giving up, but actually by surrendering to Divine will our power is actually amplified. Some people believe that they are God’s and I believe we are but we are limited by our humanness. God, Source, or whatever you choose to call it is a part of us because we come from it. It is a version of us that isn't tethered to flesh. We should trust and take strength from that version of ourselves that is limitless. 

I wanted to focus on the Whale card because it comes from my Animal Medicine Oracle deck, and I want to specifically focus on the medicine the whale brings to you to help you release what you need to release. The whale is known as the record keeper. The whale medicine helps us to unlock the codes that run deep within our DNA and our Akashic Records. The whale medicine helps us to find the best frequency or vibration that is best suited for our history. The message I’m getting from the whale is that you’re being asked to release the things that society has pressured you into believing that you need to live a fulfilling life. You’re being asked to let go so that you can tap into your truest self, your past self, and yourself at a vibrational level to truly discover what it actually is you actually need. I’m hearing from the Divine “I know you better than you think you know yourself. It’s time to discover who you truly are.”

I did this reading a bit different from my others. It’s mainly based on impressions as I’m only using the images and any text on the cards at face value along with whatever else comes to me. Tarot Cards: 7 of Cups, 8 of Wands, The Sun

Pile 1, the way you can take better care of yourself is by making a decision. With the 7 of Cups I see that you have all these opportunities being presented in front of you but you have no idea which one to go with. I get the impression from the cards that from postponing making a decision or choice, you’re starting to feel the brightness in other areas of your life dim. With the 8 of Wands and The Sun following however, I feel like once you make a decision, results and positive things will happen quickly, bringing you happiness. The Sun has a faint face depicted in it, so I feel like you don’t have to worry too much about unintended consequences. I see this as a sign you are being protected from unintended or unpleasant consequences as a result of your decision. Also, connecting with your inner child may be a way to help you make this decision.

The next cards that came out are: Protection (Call back your power. Cut the cords. Soul retrieval.) Soul Family (Call in your tribe. You don’t have to do it alone.) Anna, Grandmother of Jesus (Seeding the light, laying foundations. Divine plan.) The Ever-Unfolding Rose (Cracked open. It’s happening for you, not to you.)

With these cards I think some of you could be going through a 'dark night of the soul' (read: a very difficult time in your life). You may be feeling like somewhere along the line you’ve lost yourself or your direction as to where you’re heading next in life or what it is you truly desire (any Lucifer fans here because I hear Tom Ellis’s voice in my head haha). You may be asking yourself questions such as 'Why is this the way life is happening? Why me? Who am I even?' But even though it might seem unfair or lacking sense right now, keep in mind that whatever is going on is helping you in some format. Situations within reason of course, using your discernment here is best. It’s truly all about how you tell your story. Another thing is you don’t have to make these decisions on your own. Turn to your family and your friends for help/advice. If necessary, maybe you can seek professional help. If either or those things isn't really an option, you could always try taking some time to nurture yourself and journey inside to help you remember or figure out what’s important to you. When you make that effort to find/listen to yourself outside of the noise of everything else, I think that’s when you’ll find the information necessary to help make your decision.

Remaining Cards: The Hourglass Dolphin (46) — your achievement is only a matter of time. The Three Rhine Maidens (15) — love is a virtue that endure eternally.

The Hourglass Dolphin is all about finding balance between two aspects of your life, typically work and play. Dividing your time and remembering to put EXTRA care into taking care of your basic needs is another thing that’s going to help you find success. I feel like you are in a transitory phase and it really is only a matter of time before whatever darkness that may be clouding your life right now disappears.

The Three Rhine Mermaids talks about a phase in your life coming full circle, and once that happens your hearts desires are going to start materialising in your physical/the 3D.

The North Witch (23) — This card just kind of confirms or reiterates that with patience this dark phase is going to fade.

The Toad Witch (7) —This card talks about gaining wisdom from adversity. Also a secret admirer as well. There were messages of love laced through out the cards but they weren’t clear until now. Similarly, I think this will reflect in your life that after you’ve found stability once things have cleared up, you will find love as well.. or better yet, love will find you. Do keep in mind it might not be super quick… maybe Spring or Summer (depending on when you're reading this).

Hello Pile 2. The way for you to take better care of yourself right now is through doing what makes you happy.

Tarot Cards: Ace of Swords, The Sun, The Devil

I actually pulled the Ace of Swords last. Also before I started focusing on your pile while shuffling, the Four of Swords reversed came out.

Thinking of these two cards together, I think you need to pull back and ask yourself if what you’re doing is really the best thing for you. I feel like you guys could be in a really good place right now— at least at face value. The cards have darker backgrounds, except The Sun. I feel like whatever you are doing isn’t really sparking joy inside. Maybe it’s familial or peer pressure related? The life path you’re on right now seems ideal and fulfilling to everyone else, but somehow I feel like deep down inside it doesn’t feel that way. You may feel chained or held back as shown by The Devil. Looking at The Sun and The Devil, they came out together side by side. I feel like this is more family related meaning parents, parental figures or mentors. They may be trying to look out for you by telling you to study a certain topic or take a certain job because it’s safe, when what you truly want to do may be a little bit more risky. So even though you’re playing it safe right now and have things to celebrate, you may not be able to shake the that unsatisfied feeling inside.

The next cards that came out are: Warrior Woman (Have you answered your deepest calling?) Play (Have fun. Celebrate. Don’t be so serious.) Break The Chain (Ancestral patterns. Healing. Rewriting the future.) Transformation (Things are changing at a cellular level. Deep healing.)

All the figures in these cards look like they’re in their power. It makes me think you may be ignoring or avoiding stepping into the energy of your higher self. I kind of had the though fear of backlash pop into my head, and while it is a valid fear, I don’t feel like it’s something you have to worry about a lot. I feel like you need to schedule more time for yourself in general as well. You can’t ‘fight’ for other people all the time, you also have to ‘fight’ for you.

I’m just noticing something about the placement of the cards. Warrior Woman has a sword and is placed right next the the Ace of Swords. Break The Chain is right next to The Devil, and the sun is shining in Transformation and Play, in the same position as the one in The Sun… As I was saying, I feel like you need to just take a moment to connect with yourself. Ask yourself what is it you truly want and begin rewriting your future*.

Remaining Cards: The Siren (14) — In the treasure of a day, light is thrown on what could be tomorrow. The Stripped Dolphin (30) Good news, flowing through the ether waves will answer your prayers.

The Siren Is mostly about observation and not forcing connections. The Stripped Dolphin is about good things happening for you, especially by surprise. It’s also about new beginnings in any area of your life. However there’s also a message about not getting caught up in many opportunities, so if you were drawn to pile 1 as well, I see this as a sign to check out the pile as well.

The Silver Moon Witch (2) has a message of being able to see progress by the next full or new moon. However this card advises you to choose carefully when it’s the right time to go with the flow versus ‘swimming’ against the tide. Relating to above, journey inside yourself to figure out if you are taking the right course if action by choosing to stick with the path you’re on versus yelling plot twist and doing something different.

The Full Moon Witch (18) has two sides to it. On one hand you can expect ‘heartfelt’ plans coming to fruition, but on the other hand emotions may be running high and words that aren’t meant may be said. This another one of the moon phases cards, so you may find during the full moon you may have disagreements with your loved ones but once it starts to wane, disagreements may also reach a resolution. I think this relates to the The Silver Moon Witch card as well, so maybe before or during a full moon may not be the best time to bring up anything that may cause a disagreement?

Pile 3, you guys have been giving me hell from the moment I sat down to pull cards for your reading. From focusing and interpreting to editing. Everything was a mess and I’m assuming you a significant part of your life maybe as well? Or your headspace at least.

Aside from my struggles with your reading, based on the cards, I see you need to focus on yourself.

Tarot Cards: The Chariot, The High Priestess, Queen of Wands reversed.

Starting with your Tarot in no particular order, you have The Chariot, The High Priestess and Queen of Wands reversed. The Queen of Wands is my ideal (you) card. When it’s reversed, I see it as a sign [you] are not embodying the energy of your highest self and/or something in your life is out of balance. Both The Chariot and The High Priestess have black and white polarities, so I see it more as you needing to put yourself back into balance. Something may feel hidden from you, though you’re not really sure what and you want to push forward but it’s just not really happening? On the bottom of the deck is the 9 of Swords which notes to fear, depression, anxiety, etc and is needing to release those emotions. Obviously it can be more complex than it sounds, but I’m hoping you get the idea. Brain-dump came to me. Maybe you need to do a brain-dump and survey/assess your ‘kingdom’ so you can flip that Queen of Wands energy around and allow your chariot to race onward. The next cards that came out are:

The Crumbling (What are you clinging on to?) —> Do you need to release anything? Material items, a goal, a belief, way of life, or maybe just the act of trying to have it all together?

Boundaries (Where do you need to establish better boundaries?) —> Do you need better boundaries with yourself? Habits? People? Enviroment? School/Career?

Share Your Voice (Come out of the cave. Persecution. Expression.) It’s time to step into the limelight, because the world is your stage. Maybe you’ve been hanging back and suppressing who you truly are, but now it’s time to step forward into a new role… a you role. You don’t have to go from stand in actor to lead role over night, but do brainstorm and take baby steps daily to get there.

Keepers Of The Earth (You are not alone. Ancient ancestors stand beside you.) Take the meaning as you will, but I see it as a message to look for support in unexpected places. Maybe it’s an online community of people who can relate to you. Maybe it’s a book, article or video. Who knows, it could even be a friend or family member you didn’t think could relate or help you out. Remaining Cards: The Kraken (38) — Your success and happiness lie within you. The Great Sea Monster (37) — To accomplish you dream plan and believe.

The main theme of The Kraken is release. Good fortune/luck will come to you by delving into your subconscious mind to free the conscious. Returning to nature and the things that bring you inner joy. Good fortune coming in small waves which eventually grow into big ones.

The Great Sea Monster is about taking action and again, freeing your conscious mind by looking into your unconscious mind. Also there is more than one way to solve a dilemma, you just have to search the right way. The Immortal Witch (4) — new beginnings are happening for you, and your desires are on their way to you although it might not appear so currently. (Kind of like planting a seed. It’s growing though we can’t see it until it burst through the soil). The Fairy Ring Witch (9) — mental and physical communication. Connecting with or making friends with similar skills or talents. First of all, this is my personal interpretation. I’m not in the director/band minds so these are just the associations I made while watching the video. Secondly, English is not my native language so... sorry for any mistakes.

The cross necklace coming out Ethan’s mouth could represents the rejection of constricting ways of thinking or being fed them ( if we consider the necklace to go in ) and ,since the cross also stands for ‘redemption’,  it could just be about them ‘’repenting’’ ( it is in fact shown during the rewind to try to go back ‘to innocence’ ).

I know what they were ‘hinting’ at with Thomas bound upside down but I can’t help but also think of the tarot card “the Hanged Man”.

The card symbolizes, among other things, gaining a new perspective.

Damiano’s choice to pull his mouth on the verse «cause I just wanna amuse ya» creates a ‘grotesque’ imitation of a smile (that fits the horror-ish atmosphere of the scene) and, while he's just miming it, playing with the lyrics as always when he performs, it reminded me of those exaggereted and plastic expressions we can find in gargoyles ( guardians to ‘’ward off ‘evil-forces’’’ according to some and ‘’embodiments of the souls condemned to hell’’ for others or again ‘simple stone monsters’) the so called ‘mouth pullers’, specifically.

Vic licking the apple can represents a taste of...

- sin (see pt1)

-  love & desire ( one of the attributes associated with Venus, the apple is used as a symbol of sensuality and love since time immemorial. To give an apple to another person in the past meant to declare your love - in mytholgy Bacchus, after creating the apple, offered it to Venus to win her heart).

In the Bible it also appears in the Song of Solomon [2:3] symbolizing sensual desires and beautyness “ As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among the sons. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste.“ )

- knowledge & freedom ( another symbolic meaning of the apple is knowledge and wisdom. Also, if we cut one orizzontally, we'll see the shape of a five pointed star in its center that is said to represent "the knowledge that makes you free" -- and I can't help but think of the scenes where they play with the white star on the wall, as if it represents what's inside that apple with razors = them just being themselves and having fun - free.)

Ursula´s Trident Spread

In Villainy, command over our emotional ocean is very important. In order for us to get things done, magical and mundane, riding the appropriate emotional waves is a skill that comes in handy. Not only do we need a nudge in the right direction concerning our feelings, we also need to view them exactly for what they are before we can bend them to our will. 

THE METHOD

For this spread, we are going to take all the cup cards from your tarot deck. We are going to deal directly with our emotions, so we need these cards. We are going to shuffle the Cup Deck with our eyes closed, inhaling deeply, trying to connect as much as we can with these cards. 

THE SPREAD

Place, face down, three cards from the Cup Deck and place them in the spots for cards A, B and C as shown in the diagram below. 

Then, we are going to shuffle the Main Deck, the one with the rest of the cards, and place cards 1 to 5 face down as shown below. Once we are done with this, we are ready to proceed with the reading. 

THE READING

We are going to read cards 1 and 2. From the information gleaned from these two cards we are going to interpret the rest of the cards, as if cards 3-A, 4-B and 5-C were natural extensions from the story cards 1 and 2 began. 

The Origin: The deep root of your preponderant present feelings. 

Your Will: How to use your will to bend your feeling into something much more useful, which may or may not be a more positive mindset. We aren´t going to fear negative emotions, for they also have their usefulness. 

Cards 3-A: As you can see, the cards are meant to be read in pairs. You must take into account both cards at the same time. Card 3 represents an action that will lead into Card A, the first cup card, a useful emotion. 

Cards 4-B: Card 4 represents an action that will lead into Card B, the second cup card, the least useful emotion. Although it will be the most tempting, rest assured it is the one to actively avoid.

Cards 5-C: Card 5 represents and action that wil lead into Card C, the third cup card, the most powerful and useful emotion. Combined with Card A, all th while we downplay Card B, Card C will give us the correct and best emotional set point.

Post-Mortem Analysis: Our emotions guide our moment to moment. Problem is, we get carried away by them and seldom keep them in check. We rarely question is our feelings are truly useful, or if they are acting like uncontrollable waves that rock our boats. Truth is, we don´t have to be governed by them unconsciously. That´s not to say that we should stress out trying to control every single bit, but we can certainly try being our best and approach life with a more useful mindset. 

A Word of Caution: Use the spread sparingly, but beware letting it taking over your life. Emotions are useful, all of them. What we don´t want is to end up trying to micromanage all of them and fearing them. That way lays failure. So, benefit as much as you can from this spread, but use wisely.

You once mentioned that Dabi's symbol of rebirth is the Phoenix. Ever since I read that post of yours a long time ago, I haven't stopped thinking about it. The imagery hit me profoundly! Do you mind elaborating? Thanks!

Is Hawks more like Icarus or like a Phoenix? I'm not sure if it makes a difference or not...

It’s my theory the actual rebirth / phoenix imagery is associated with Dabi rather than Hawks. If only because death and rebirth symbolizes a change in a character. In Tarot the Major Arcana “13″ symbolizes Death as the idea of a great change being brought, and a symbolic death of the old previous life or old self, rather than just straightforward dying. 

This rebirth imagery is connected to Dabi rather than Hawks, because not only has Dabi already experienced a death and rebirth by fire - Toya burning to death, and ressurrecting from the ashes somehow as Dabi. His new name literally meaning “cremation” a death by fire. The way Dabi is written now is also meant to be a “change” from who Toya used to be, Toya was someone who at some point was eager to become a hero, Dabi is a villain dedicated to bringing his father down. All of these ideas of change are associated with Dabi, not Hawks. 

1. The Phoenix

Dabi has already committed a lot of symbolic steps that would make him a phoenix. As stated above, he already experienced a death and rebirth once, Todoroki Toya dying and coming back as Dabi. The first time we see him named in the manga, comes from his father staring at his funeral portrait wishing for him to come back. 

Hawks has wings, and Dabi does not. However, I would make the argument that Dabi is the phoenix because he’s the one whose entire character is written around change. Dabi has even done a few phoenix related things already. We’ve seen him fly. 

The phoenix is also a bird that famously burns itself. The fires it’s reborn out of are, flames of self immolation. Hawks quirk is vulnerable to fire yes, but using his quirk doesn’t actively harm him. Dabi is the one so committed to burning himself over and over again, and burning in his own flames, in the hope that he can make a positive change on society. 

Say whatever you want about Dabi (you won’t hurt his feelings, he doesn’t have any), but at least ideologically Dabi follows Stain’s ideals, he believes you have to commit a purge or in other words, burn the previous society so that a new society can be reborn from the ashes. This is also once again, phoenix imagery, rebirth from ashes. 

Dabi is a character written around the concept of change, and being a bringer of change. 

2. The Light

Okay, before I start let me say I believe both Hawks and Dabi have the potential to learn healthier behaviors and grow as people. Seeing Hawks deteriorate mentally, and fall back on worse and worse behaviors isn’t I want to happen, but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s what is being shown in the writing. 

Hawks and Dabi both have the potential for great change, but we are shown Hawks being given the oppurtunity continually and not taking it. Dabi is set up for redemption, and Hawks is set up to take a fall. By redemption literally all I mean is that Dabi looks like he’s going to have a character arc where he improves in some way and unlearns his unhealthy, self-destructive behaviors. Hawks also has an oppurtunity to unlearn these behaviors, but he can’t really do it if he refuses to change himself or his beliefs in any way. 

Hawks moves towards the shadows, Dabi moves towards the light. The writing around Dabi also suggests several times that rather than putting down Dabi, there is going to be reintegration of both the Dabi and Touya personalities. 

If Dabi and Enji are truly foils, then if Enji is given the chance to learn to be both Endeavor the Hero, and also Enji Todorokit the father, then why wouldn’t the same chance be extended to Dabi? If the message of Enji’s arc is that you can at any point, turn around, and that the smallest things can chance people. If fire you thought once only existed to burn can be redefined in a much more healthier lens, then why would not that same idea be extended to his son? Enji even reflects on this, what about the future I cut short? 

The future he cut short, sounds like he’s referring to Toya. Natsuo also brings up Toya for the first time shortly before this reflection. Endeavor accepts the idea that like Natsuo said, Toya’s death was his fault. Enji expresses twice, first that he wanted Toya to return to the dinner table, and second that he never truly believed Toya was dead even after they discovered in jaw bone in the fire. 

Shoto’s words to his father as well, you can become a better person from here on out, even if you’re not forgiven from what you did in the past because small words, can change a person. 

The path forward is not destruction, but reintegration. In a jungian sense that means accepting both sides of yourself, both the conscious mind (the light) and the unconsious mind / repressed self (the shadow). In terms of character, it would be Enji being able to view himself both as Enji Todoroki the man who failed his family and Endeavor the hero. It would be Shoto being able to accept both his fire and ice sides. It would be Dabi being able to accept both Toya the hero-hopeful, and then Dabi the villain. You notice how all three of them are split down the middle in this way, all three of them experience a split self that they need to reintegrate. 

Self destruction doesn’t work. Enji tries to burn his past self when he kills the High End and what does everyone in his family say to him. None of us forgive you just because you beat up a hero on the television. You haven’t done anything yet to change yourself. 

Enji attempts to just kill the past and move forward and that doesn’t work for him, as Dabi himself says so, the past never dies. If Dabi insists that the past never dies, he has the same immortality as the phoenix. 

Hawks is someone when given the oppurunity to change his mind, just doesn’t do it. He has someone who sympathized with him and trusted him and offered him a path forward that he didn’t take. Let me put it simply. If Hawks is Twice. If Hawks wants to be like Twice. If Twice is Hawks path forward, and then Hawks kills twice what does that say? 

If Hawks kills the guy he wants to be like - if he sees himself in Twice then murders him then, what does that say about the way Hawks views himself? I’m not reacting to whether or not Hawks is a good or bad person, but the framing. Hawks is framed tragically, Twice even says this out loud, it’s sad, pitiable that Hawks can’t make friends or trust people. That he’s so committed to doing everything all alone. 

Destruction isn’t the path forward, but reintregration. If Shoto’s ultimate desire is to learn to love himself, and be at peace with himself, then why would he hunt down and kill the person he views as the same as himself?

“I was also burning”. I agree that Dabi does not have an arc. Rather, his arc hasn’t begun yet. That’s because we’ve only been introduced to Dabi as a character when the Touya reveal happened, before that he literally was just a mystery lingering in the background. 

However, the set-up with Dabi points to this arc of change and rebirth. All of the foreshadowing around Toya is “we want Toya to come home” and “Dabi reflects the part of myself I needed Midoriya to save me from”. Dabi and Hawks both have the potential to change, however, if you look at the framing Dabi is framed with the chance for redemption because the idea of change is written into the center of his character, whereas Hawks is someone who tragically stays the same. It’s been brought up several times, Hawks is the bird who stays in his change, who does the same things over and over. 

The bird stays in his cage because he can’t survive out of it. Dabi is the phoenix because he symbolizes both this change to society, a change in endeavor that has to take place in order for him to be there for his family, and a change in himself he needs to make in order to continue living. Hawks is icarus, because he’s set to take a fall. His inability to change in time, his desire to keep flying towards the same sun will only lead to his fall.
