This whole thing with Amazon barely marketing The Edge of Sleep (if at all) really made me think about how indie projects just. In general are treated pretty poorly by an industry that now more than ever wants to play it ā€œsafeā€. Stuff that comes from unconventional sources or things that arenā€™t considered mainstream or high brow enough (animation, musical theater, and yes, independent YouTube creators being some of the ones that come to mind) are either scoffed at or set up to fail UNLESS enough people see it or itā€™s part of a major franchise people know about (see: Into the Spiderverse).
Masterpieces, great art, great storytelling can come from anywhere and anyone.
But we need to fight for the platform so it can be seen by everyone.

when i see people going around complaining about the media they consume 9 times out of 10 iā€™m thinking ā€œplease please get into more independently produced workā€ esp when itā€™s things like mass media trends or corporate interests or things that seem like theyā€™re made for sanitized mainstream interests like yes those are all annoying but yk what has less of thoseā€¦ yk what has the marginalized focus and the earnestness and the experimentation that you say you wantā€¦ thatā€™s right. itā€™s art made by random nobodies

Thereā€™s an alternate universe where Welcome to Hell has multiple episodes & Helluva Boss is just a pilot episode with years of a small niche cult following.

Show Recommendation for Gravity Falls Fans: Monkey Wrench
I know I rarely post anymore, but for those of you who still follow me from the old days when this blog was one of the biggest Gravity Falls blogs, I remain a massive animation fan as an adult and try to watch as much as I can.
Recently, there's been a notable indie animation boom and so many great shows have popped up, and the people who work on them pour blood, sweat, and tears into them on shoestring budgets, which is why it's important in my opinion - if you're a fan of animation - to promote and support them as much as you can so more animated shows get to see the light of day and get as much love as Gravity Falls did, if possible. And this show is one I 110% believe deserves as much love and attention as Gravity Falls received.
What I want to promote today with the many followers I still have from the Gravity Falls days is one called Monkey Wrench:
youtube
To summarize in a nutshell: two mercenaries take odd jobs across the galaxy where Ratchet and Clank's setting had a baby with humor as great as Gravity Falls' albeit more adult, with a sprinkling of some lore and overarching storyline and character development that's already peeking out in the first three episodes that have been released. Plus, just damn gorgeous animation in general, of course.
If my spidey senses are right, I think many Gravity Falls fans would love Monkey Wrench because of all of the above.
Unfortunately, I've learned as I've quietly followed along with this show that A. YouTube's ad revenue pays the Monkey Wrench crew crap, to be honest, and in animation funding is king, and B. this show deserves WAY more attention than it's getting.
Not to knock the other indie animations out there, but I literally have no idea why this show is not getting as much love as some of the more massive indie shows out there. It defies logic. It's better written or just as well-written as most of the big ones, the animation is just as gorgeous or even moreso, and plus... overarching story and lore.
So if you trust me as fellow GF fans and miss GF and want something that scratches a similar itch, please please please at least watch the first three episodes that are available of Monkey Wrench and give it some love and support like you did/do for Gravity Falls. I swear the creators didn't pay me for this, I just genuinely think it deserves it and it shocks me that it's not getting way more attention.

anyway. unrelated to my lovecraftian horror sonic lore madness but hazbin hotel concluded today! my official take is that the show is actually pretty good when you don't have people yelling in your ear that it's the worst thing on earth and it's most certainly not perfect or even necessarily spectacular but like. it's fine. for what it is and what the team probably had to deal with it's a perfectly acceptable little series. its biggest issue is honestly just the pacing which i suspect is entirely down to amazon/publishing restrictions rather than any fault of the creators so i can't hold that against them too much in my judgement. if you can ignore that and keep a reasonable sense of expectations about its humor and plot i think you can have a pretty good time with it. TLDR, 7/10, really needed to be double the length but for what it is it's respectable and the songs are pretty bangin

Mate the shit between Lackadaisy and HelluvaVerse (or whatever the fuck Viv calls it) is so fucking stupid now that I think about it. Like more shit get's revealed about Lackadaisy but the more that happens the more shit gets revealed about VivziePop. It's like these two, no, the entire indie animation community wants to tear each other's community down bit by bit and it hurts to see because this community is supposed to be a welcoming community who stands for the innovation of indie animation, not some massive fucking cesspool of toxicity. This is probably going to be the last time I ever talk about Indie Animation for a while because man fuck the way this community's behaviour is like rn. I mean like support it yeah but don't let shitty people ruin the experience.

crowdfunded internet animations projects have such a different feel to them than mainstream like tv ones and i struggle to put it into words really. (im mostly talking about lackadaisy but this applies to v*vziepop's projects too though i think they're much worse quality-wise). the dialogue feels really slow there are some pacing issues but most of all it feels so..fandom-y? like they dont do much to make you love these characters i feel like it's made for people who will love them already the second they see them you know?or maybe the pilot is mostly adressed to fans of the comic, i didnt read that so idk.
it feels like it's made to specifically form a fandom rather than just build an audience of casual watchers (like for instance: there are a lot of rick and morty fans in many demographics, sure the production company has a specific audience in mind, but with projects like h*zbin that audience is even more narrowed(but hardcore) )
i dont know maybe its a good strategy for a crowdfunded project like this or maybe it's the case of creators liking their little guys a little too much and theyre too self indulgent. all that to say i didnt like rocky lackadaisy too much he gives me weird 2015 vibes !

seeing a lot of animation industry professionals talking about the state of the industry right now is just so sad and discouraging to see how many shows got cancelled and how many people just got laid off and can literally never put any of their work on those shows into their portfolios or even talk about it with their friends because of NDAs
I sincerely hope that the union negotiations next month go well :(
