i was telling a friend the other day that i feel like cad, caleb, & essek all have actually-autistic-Former-Gifted-Kid vibes but like,,,, different forms of that vibe???

cad is like,,, the kid who's freakishly good at some subjects, so they put him in like,,,, outside of class activities (like being sent to a special study group), but he tends to use the time out of class to doodle or work on his special interest instead of doing the classwork, so he ends up being deemed Not Enough of a Gifted Kid (even though he's autistic and has the hallmarks and drawbacks that come with that in a school setting and should probably be homeschooled)

essek is the kid who's really good in EVERYTHING and therefore extremely bored; who doesn't have friends bc he's always off somewhere working on some project. but because he's good at everything he's got impossible standards he keeps exceeding and it's turned him into an emotionally-repressed machine of a kid. in many ways he's a one trick pony, bc he's got all the knowledge but only uses the same five things over and over again bc that's what he's known for (since canonically he floats bc he did it as a party trick/show to skill early on, became known for it, and now can't NOT float bc it's expected of him) and he really just likes his special interest & warm soup & soft things & hugs but no one ever asks so he never tells anyone

and caleb is (like i was) a kid whose natural drive got him into an advanced class, but when he floundered no one was there to catch him and he crashed & burned and had to start over (and deal with the trauma of the last time to boot) (and he already has trouble functioning in social situations bigger than one on one, so the formality and conversational eggshells of academic spaces is simultaneously very good and very horrible for him & his mental health)

anyway yes all of tmn are def nd & many of them autistic and i love them sm 🥺❤️🌸

also i relate to the cad one a lot skjnfnksj curse of being very good at a few things but not rly the usual academic things (like, maths or academic writing or sciences). and also spending most of the time doodling or working on special interests instead of homework.. he has “im in a different class now? thats nice? its stressful but at least its quieter. ok im going to go outside and lie in dirt and look at bugs” vibes... he doesnt care much about being prestigious in that way. same way that he doesn’t automatically fear or respect (beyond politeness) usual authority figures like dwendal or ikithon
