I can only see him being gay, I genuinely can’t imagine him with a girl character lol. Also I feel he’s trans, too (ftm). Literally almost every trans guy friend I’ve had who likes moomins say that he gives them gender envy.

I actually think she’d also be bi like Moomintroll (but still questioning). I think she has a pretty heavy male preference tho.

the reason you can't read about moomin and snufkin being bffs without any romantic undertones is bc tove jansson fully intended moomin and snufkin to be a metaphor for homosexual couples during the time period in which they were created. interpreting canonically gay characters as "just bffs" would be...honestly super shitty and 100% canon gay erasure. also (and i say this as an aro myself) being aroace is no excuse to hate romantic pairings.

I’ll try and go through this point by point:

I understand that Tove was LGBT and fully support the LGBT community now and forever.  However, I have never heard of this as something she intended?  I thought she based Snufkin (at least partially) off of her male fiancee?  Who she broke up with before the wedding ever took place?  I also thought that they remained friends afterward?  Could you please link me to a source that explains this?

except that they aren’t?  I’ve never read the books or comics but I have watched Moominvalley & lots of the 90s series and they are not canonically together?  Moomin says that he is Snorkmaiden’s boyfriend?  I’m pretty sure Tove wanted some LGBT undertones but you wouldn’t give Moomin a girlfriend if you wanted that between two characters.  I feel a lot of the snufmin fans come from the animated series as there are a lot of love songs that play over snufkin and moomin interactions!

I didn’t add that in as an excuse!  I didn’t expect anyone to take any notice tbh!  I’m currently struggling with my own sexuality and such.  I have been trying to figure things out through fiction (as always) and it led to little comments on tumblr, that’s all!  To be completely honest with you I’m not sure whether I’m Ace/Aro or Bi or Het!  And nowhere did I say or imply that I hate romantic pairings, I was sure of that!

The original meaning of the post you are referring to was a sort of longing for the appreciation of characters as friends!  I find that fandoms tend to lean a little too far into the romantic/sexual sides of things for me.  Not that I don’t enjoy that from time to time!

not only did i have someone comment on my art of me calling snorkmaiden a lesbian ‘i dont think shes a lesbian but cute art!’ like supe rjust didnt need that!

but they also had post that were like

‘everyone says snorkmaiden is a lesbian and moomin is gay, but the lady who wrote moomin had male lovers so this is bi erasure’ something along these lines

but they werent bi in the series, they werent anything but straight with LOTS of gay coding because thats just how it was for the times it was released!
