I dont hate it, it just doesnt hit as well as it should. I prefer the barbie version. And I prefer Disney Rapunzel with ROTG Jack because not only they the same age but i find the parallels a bit more fascinating.

I remember seeing a arrow toy Rapunzel themed at Target, just recently I found out she was going to use a bow and arrow beforehand XD much much cooler than a frying pan!

Which begs to question! Why is the franchise so off with its girl characters? Gothel's entire motivation is staying young, Cass ended up a mess, Ariana is underwritten. And Rapunzel barely has another girl her age to hang out with. It's just Cass.

I get it. I disliked the movie at first because of the movie itself and how badly it was written but I started to hate the movie because of the rabid, racist fans and how badly they treated patf just to prop this movie up back in the day. The fandom is still pretty bad from what I seen.

The Barbie version is one of the best adaptations of rapunzel I have ever seen. It’s so good and it holds up perfectly well today except for the animation of course. If you get a chance, you should check out rapunzel’s revenge. It’s a great rapunzel comic and Disney took elements from that version as well.

I definitely agreed that Jack Frost and rapunzel would make a good couple. I liked them way better than him and Elsa and definitely would be way better than creepy dream.

Oh I saw that now in stores and I wonder why they made it when Merida is right there. I did hear that the series writers wanted her to have the bow and arrow but Disney didn’t like that idea. Probably because they wanted her to be helpless and didn’t want her to be taken seriously with a weapon. I remember looking at some Lego sets and I saw that rapunzel had a bow in a set for the series. So I think that rumor was true. Yeah, I would like the bow and arrow way better than that dumb frying pan. I guess it doesn’t matter since rapunzel wasn’t shown as a threat with the frying pan and it was more Flynn’s weapon in the movie.

Yeah, it’s so weird how this franchise is targeted towards little girls and all the female characters in it is just off and can be really offensive. Gothel is a walking outdated stereotype of many, rapunzel has no flaws, gets overshadowed in her OWN movie and couldn’t even drive the plot of the movie! It’s hard to believe this movie was made in 2010, it belongs in the 50s.

I have limited knowledge of the series characters but is cass the one who they made a villain and has blue hair like she’s some anime character? If so, It’s bad because I think I seen people say that she’s a villain because of how she looks and they turned a friendship into a bitter one just in a sake of something dumb. Do the writers think that girls have to be catty to each other or else it’s unrealistic? It’s a weird choice for a franchise targeted towards little girls. Ariana is the queen, right? I think I reblog a post about cultural appropriation in the movie and they mentioned her name. But really? They could have had a good plot point about rapunzel and her getting used to a good mother after what she’s been through. But they thought it was better just to focus on the king, have him be even more abusive to rapunzel than gothel was (reading her diary, following her everywhere and locking her up in a fucking tower after she just got out of one!!) and say that it’s ok because he’s doing it because he loves her.. I also “love” how the queen basically did nothing about this and just say supportive things rapunzel behind the king’s back like that means anything. Disney really needs to hire women for this franchise because this is just embarrassing and sad in this day and age.

I have a few questions about your Big Four Au!

One - What are the guardians doing while Jack is missing, and especially Baby Tooth and Jamie? Is Baby Tooth there accompanying him or is he all alone? Is Pitch making any moves now that he knows Jack is gone and the guardians are all distracted?

Two - How does Queen For a Day play out? Since Jack is the embodiment of winter, him versus Zhan Tiri’s blizzard, maybe instead of the invention, he’s the one to overpower the storm and control it to defeat it? And if so, does that cause him to pass out like when he overused his blue lightning powers on Pitch and that’s what distracts the Big Four from checking in on Varian?

Three - How does Jack get home at the end? Does the combining of the moonstone and Sundrop shooting up into space being him back, like does that huge magic force being him back to his timeline like he’s a shooting star flying along with the celestial powers? And what’s the fate for his friends back in Corona? Do they stay in touch? Do people remember Jack? Is there a chance for them to always be connected or does he lose them forever and they forget about him, or like when the Sundrop flower was picked, is there a monument in honor of him after he vanishes?

While Jack is gone, the Guardians are probably scrambling to find him, Jamie included. I've always headcanoned that after his defeat, Pitch is much weaker and can't attack them for a good while. Baby Tooth doesn't follow Jack, this is gonna be a solo journey!

Jack arrives in Corona after he follows a trail of black rocks that lead him to a magic portal. I figure something similar might happen in the end: his job there is done and the Moon allows him to go back home.

This is a place and time where magic is more present, that's why people can see him. Dunno if this contradicts canon RotG lore *shrugs*

So when he leaves, people will remember him. The story would leave it vague if Jack and the others will ever see each other again, but if magic portals can just appear, nothing says it can't happen again right??

The Corona people would absolutely make a statue to celebrate The Four, because I'm cheesy like that lol

Queen for a Day headcanons under the cut because I have A Lot to say!

Varian gets his father Quirin to agree to go express their concerns about the black rocks to the royal family

However, when Quirin lies to the king and starts to leave, Rapunzel and friends notice how distressed Varian looks. He tells them that the rocks are becoming a serious problem at the village. They tell him not to worry and Rapunzel promises him that they'll solve the problem together. Eventually. These rocks are hard to figure out guys.

The king and queen leave to go celebrate their anniversary on the mountain retreat

The scene where Rapunzel tries her best to give advice to the Coronians (??) plays like in the show, but here she makes the "oh god I hope I'll be a good ruler like my parents when I actually become queen" to her friends (Eugene still gets his own scene with her at the end like in the show so don't worry)

She asks Merida for advice - "since you're also a princess right?" - but she just shrugs and says she never listens to her mother's ruling lessons and can't help with this. They all look at Hiccup bc they know he's a future chief too, but he says something vague and changes subject (foreshadowing for when it's revealed he's running away from responsibilities)

The blizzard begins, but after the initial fun, it's clear that this is no ordinary storm. Jack tries to make it stop but he fails (he doesn't faint bc he got more powerful after becoming a Guardian)

Varian starts making a potion to destroy the rocks

Rapunzel's parents get stuck on the way to the mountains. When the gang finds out, Rapunzel wants to go find them but the castle staff begs her to stay. Eugene, Lance, the thugs - and Merida! - go instead

Quirin gets trapped in the crystal and Varians runs to Corona to get help

Xavier tells the gang about the legendary machine once used to stop a similar storm. They compromise and start evacuating people from the island to mainland, supervised by Jack, while Rapunzel and Cass get ready to start searching for the machine

Varian arrives and asks for help. With Merida and Jack away, Rapunzel has to decide between searching a possible solution to the storm or going to the village and lose precious time. Hiccup reassures her and agrees to follow Varian, but Varian won't forget this (oof)

You know what happens next: the girls find the machine, the storm stops, the others rescue the king and queen, yadda yadda

Hiccup and Varian fail to free Quirin and Varian swears that he'll get revenge on Rapunzel for abandoning him (Hiccup just. looks around awkwardly. because this is a villain arc in the making right?? uh i probably should leave yikes)

Just had the chance to read Lights of Avalon while writing my own HiJack fic, and its so apparent how much you GET Jack as a character. It's amazing to see the life you breathe not only into this different incarnation of Jack, but the Guardians and side characters like Jack's family. As someone who is more new to the HiJack fandom (Only been writing it for a year now) how do you get the characters this fleshed out and believable? I always struggle trying to balance out elements like that without it dragging to much. What is your technique for this writing wise?

Well, technically I've only been here for a year too--I think we're coming up on the anniversary of when I read OTNWAS and got trapped here, wow, time sure flies LMAO

This is my first ever ask for writing advice, dude I'm so stoked! I'll do my best to give you a clear answer, but sorry in advance if it's a little jumbled, I'm still fairly new to fic writing and this is only my second one asldfjlasdjf

For Jack specifically, I owe a large part of my understanding of him to talking about him with @jjackfrost! I feel like I had a good grasp on his general vibes from rotg, but talking with Robin and how he approached writing Jack in OTNWAS really helped flesh him out in my mind!

EDIT: I finished typing everything out and this answer is long af, I'm so sorry LMAO. TL;DR:

Focus on who Jack is as a person, and demonstrate who other people are through how exactly they interact--and more importantly, react--to him in his POV

9 times out of 10 people won't info dump their tragic backstories to each other, so give info about them in their actions as you move the plot forward. Come up with situations that can best showcase who they are as people. Show don't tell!

How much you learn about each character will all depend on who your POV character is (Jack) and what his relationship to them is like (the closer they are, the more heart to hearts he'll be inclined to share)

EDIT 2: ALSO THANK YOU SO MUCH, I'm so glad you like my characterization of everyone!! That's super high praise!!

Things are a bit different because this version of him never lost his memories and stayed human after falling through the ice, so I focused on who he is at his core--his centre, if you will hehehe--and what kind of person he was to begin with that would make the moon choose him. He's a really specific balance of mischievous but never malicious, immature but still responsible, and very very brave and compassionate and protective and HUHHHHHH my son 😭😭😭 His strength is in how he focuses on finding joy even in the darkest times, you know? And he's very self-sacrificing in order to bring that same joy for others.

When fleshing out the other characters in the story, for me it was important to remember that Jack is the POV character, so any info we learn about others has to come from their relationship with him and what he observes in them.

For example, his heart to heart with Bunny is way more guarded than the ones he has with his mother and Emily since they're still strangers to each other at that point. Neither of them are going to info dump about their tragic backstories to the other LMAO, especially since Bunny's not a wears-their-heart-on-their-sleeve character, but that's exactly why I thought that he'd be the best choice out of the three to have the initial real talk with Jack. He'd be the least likely to pry, which would let Jack relax a bit about dropping his guard.

In their conversation, I needed to give enough info to 1) get to understand Bunny's motivations a bit more, since he definitely sticks out next to Tooth and Sandy as a bard, 2) establish trust between him and Jack that can develop into a believable friendship later, and 3) give Jack more of a reason to think that joining the Guardians is actually an emotionally healthy idea too.

So then I thought about what exactly they'd share with each other, since conversations are always about listening instead of talking. Bunny doesn't divulge into the details of his past, but you get a sense that he's been through a lot given what he does share, and that he's already had his own character arc. Jack learns that Bunny is also deeply protective of his family, and that's something he can relate to. Jack's questions in turn show how lost he is, and that prompts Bunny to give only the relevant info that he thinks would help Jack.

But then for all that to happen, they needed to have another moment of bonding before it felt believable that they'd open this conversation in the first place, hence them being forced to team up in the snowball fight lol. Plus it wouldn't be a RotG fic without one good snowball fight LMAO. Pacing-wise, it also just so happened that I needed another more light-hearted scene to brighten the mood before things went to shit again since chapter 2 was so angst-heavy, and I needed to bring the Guardians back in to give Jack the option to leave, and you see how things are falling into place now lol

Writing the Guardians is suuuuuuper fun because they all have such fun and distinct personalities from each other! I get to be a bit less grounded when it comes to them too, since they bring a lot of comedic relief and are more whimsical in nature from the movie.

For Jack's family, it was easier to flesh them out through how much Jack cares about them, and how much he pays attention to what qualities in Emily and his mother that he loves most. In turn, you get to see how much they love him too.

Obviously you spend the most time with him and Emily, so I wanted to make their dynamic as siblings really cute (I drew a lot of inspo from my own relationship with my younger brother, which helped me relate to Jack more too). You see how much she takes after him with the tree climbing and how she follows his lead in all the mischief he pulls. She's self-sacrificing in her own way, with the scene where she pretends not to be interested in the pink dress when Jack catches her looking at it, and more importantly later when she tries to stop him from leaving and finally shows how much the accident and the guilt from it has been affecting her too.

Pacing-wise, they needed to spend the most time together in order to make Jack's sacrifice for her more impactful, and how much it hurts him to leave her, so I came up with a bunch of ideas for things to best showcase the different layers of their relationship--1) clowning the bards and each other for the humour, 2) stargazing for the intimacy, 3) snowball fight for the mischief, 4) their goodbye for the FEELS, plus that whole montage about winter before Jack saves her.

You only get one real scene with his mother, and I wanted to give her more character than just "mom," so I gave her an injured little boy to help take care of so you can see how warm she is as a person when she calms him down, in contrast to how Jack can reassure the kid in his own way by entertaining him and making him laugh. Then she gets some banter with Jack so you see her sense of humour. You get a hint of where Jack and Emily get their playfulness when she mentions that she's better at climbing trees to tease him lol.

Exposition-wise, Jack already knows that she's the town doctor, so instead of having him like, turn to the camera to say it lol, the scene with her stitching up the boy's cut demonstrates that. I gave Jack and Emily tasks that showed other aspects of her role without having to explain it, ie: shopping for supplies at the apothecary for her, and delivering medication orders she made for people in town. Idk if it was too subtle, but another reason I had Jack mention that they're short on cash was meant to show that she's not in the medical field for profit (SIDE-EYES AMERICA), so she's very selfless as well.

Aaaaaaaand that's about it so far without talking about what's going to happen next in the story. I hope that was helpful!

when did you find out about hijack and what has kept you interested also you have good vibes

Oh hey @nninoxasauraur ! I've seen you around my posts and I have to say thanks for sticking around! Also no u, you have the baddest vibes of all. This ask has opened the gates, so-long answer incoming. Like, seriously long, you've got me ranting. Good luck!

Unsurprisingly...Of the Northwind and Skies it was for me...sort of! Httyd and Rotg have always, always been two movies that stand as an all-time favorite and have been very close to me ever since I first saw them as a kid. I remember watching them every single night once and again, sometimes many times in one night. They really stood up for me in a very personal, close way, that still remains to this day.

Still, years passed, and despite me being in the internet for a good while now, it never occurred to me that: oh hey, people still like and still create content for these guys! It was as if the movies were in a bubble in my head, so I never searched content of them. Even better, surprisingly and to my delight, I never realized both stories could even be fused.

I was super reluctant at first, though. I remember taking a look at the title of OTNAS and debating whether to give it a chance or not. It was half Wonder at the idea that my two favorite comfort media just happened to come in a One Package of Glory, but also suspicious of what to expect. So 'fine, for the laughs', I said. 'What's the harm?' I said.

BOY AM I GLAD I READ IT EVEN IF IT FELT CRINGE FOR LIKE THE FIRST CHAPTER OR TWO.

What kept me interested was a mix of things.

The films have...so much lore. So much fantasy and love. They have so much story-building, even without considering the books and comics, which I only found about as I discovered Hijack at the same time. Reading about Berk and the characters that make Berk makes me feel like being at home while simultaneously feeling far, far away, in a place I would like to call home. It feels free, and it also makes me relate.

Then there's Rotg, a movie that makes me feel so much more at ease. It brings me hope and comfort and it helps me confront such a realistic world as this one, just as it did when I was eight. Now, fusing both worlds? Both favorite characters that coincidentally, mix together very well for a BUNCH of different reasons? The characters feel so alive, and the relationships feel like care and love, and I can't help with fall a little in love with that, myself.

The stories bring me so many ideas and inspiration. Both writing styles of the stories, the way both stories have been delivered...it inspires me, as a creator and as a person.

And yeah, maybe it may be deeper than it might be for some, but that's how it was for me. I wish to be the kind of person who can make kids with broken hopes and troubled dreams, and even teens and adults, at ease with what I make.

Character Info DisWorks Wizarding World AU

Characters that are not just witch/wizard or are another sentient magic user. As well as the witches/wizards that are animagi.

Adam Dufort (Beauty and the Beast) - is a Wizard that was bitten by a werewolf as a child. Since Adam, is the beast from beauty in the beast I thought making him a werewolf would pay good homage to that.

Ptichner Black (Rise of the Guardians) - is half-vampire. His father is a vampire and his mother was a witch. Making Pitch at least half-vampire was two fold, vampires are beings of the night and Pitch is the boogeyman, the other reason is the author of the HP series mentions the existence of vampires in the first two books, but to my recollection we never meet any in the series itself, so this was my way of actually putting one in existence.

Meilin Lee (Turning Red) - is a maledictus, her families blood curse is a red panda. Her father is a wizard, which is why she's able to go to a wizarding school.

Sanderson "Sandy" Mansnoozie (RotG)- Is a Goblin, I could've made him just a person, but I also wanted to add more diversity amongst the sentient magic users. Besides this isn't the first time a wizarding school has had a nonhuman as headmaster. If I remember correctly Beauxbatons headmistress was at the very least half-giant like Hagrid, but it has been a while since I've read book 4.

Tatiana "Tooth" Plume (RotG)- is a fairy. She's the leader of her type of fairies. (Though I do not describe how she looks completely. I picture her to be Indian instead of white. A thing that bothers me as an adult when rewatching ROTG is that they clearly lean into Russian inspiration for Santa and have an American actor due a Russian accent. the easter bunny is a Australian inspired and have an Aussie actor portray him. From what I recall from the special features they tooth fairy's palace was sort of Indian inspired, maybe it was Tibetan, I can't recall exactly, but the point is she is voiced by a white American actress doing an American accent, that just doesn't make sense to me. (that's all I'll say for now)).

"Baby Tooth" Anura (RotG)- Is one of Tatian's people. From what I could find when trying to find a name for her. Anura is an Indian name meaning wisdom, though I know it meant wise or knowledgeable I also connected it to Wisdom teeth.

It is that time of year once again! Happy International Fanworks Day! This year has been even busier than the last one so just another reclist (that might be late) from me this year. Hopefully next year will be different.

This year’s theme is when fandoms collide – my bread and butter, really. So, without further ado, this year’s IFD reclist:

Alex Rider (AR) × Rise of the Guardians (RotG)

Kindling Wonder by control of chaos Beautiful and incredibly uplifting. In most fics, Alex is quite jaded and hardened by the things he’s seen from being forced to grow up too quickly but this fic reminds us he can still be a child – he can still have hope and wonder, remember the good times, dream and have fun. Despite everything he’s been through, he can be the kid he should’ve been allowed to be.

Rise of the Guardians (RotG) × Avengers

Clashing with Legends by routavaurio The two source media are blended very well despite being rather different in tone. There’s humour but also seriousness, the characters feel true to themselves and the fight scenes are easy to follow. Even with a pretty large ensemble cast, everyone got their time to shine. There’s also a sequel, Mythical Intervention, and both fics are now also on AO3!

Winter Gods by avearia This starts off funny and lighthearted, gradually layering in plot and as of the latest chapter (20/02/2019), hints of horror building up to quite the cliffhanger. The worldbuilding is intriguing, with explanation for the discrepancies between Norse mythology and the MCU’s Asgardians as well as incorporating backstory from the GoC books.

Alex Rider (AR) × Harry Potter (HP)

Harry Potter and the Teenage Spy by Rod I don’t know how to describe this other than it is quite literally, when fandoms collide. See what I did there? …Sorry. The first instalment is set during ‘Deathly Hallows’: what if Alex (and Tom and Sabina) was/were in the café the Golden Trio escaped to after the wedding? After this, well, you know how Alex is – can’t leave anything alone, has to see things through no matter what, casually popping in to fuck shit up – no, really, this series is literally just Alex inserting his sassy self into Deathly Hallows. 😅

Of Wands and Stun Darts (And All the Things in Between) by tomaetotomahtoe This series is so sweet and Harry and Alex’s relationship is incredibly tender. The parallels are drawn between them in such a way that highlights the similarities in their personalities without making them carbon copies of each other. They’re so soft with each other – they’re also mutually pining away for each other 🤭. You’ll be giggling over these adorably silly boys.

Miraculous Ladybug (ML) × Avengers

What the Cat Dragged In by Kryal Tbh, I don’t really know what to say for this one other than it’s just… good. The way the world of Miraculous is viewed through the lens of an outside perspective is simply brilliant and the worldbuilding beyond what we see in canon is very clever. Adrien trying to figure out the physics behind the miraculous is just *chef’s kiss*. These two media were skilfully integrated and the characterisation is on point. Lastly, the tags – ‘the Avengers are not immune to cute’, they certainly aren’t! 😂😂😂

Undertale (UT) × Harry Potter (HP)

Under the Veil by poplasia I didn’t even know I needed this friendship until I read it. Sirius and Sans get on like a house on fire, the mechanics behind the magic are cleverly devised, the banter is hilarious and I can’t forget the puns.

Alex Rider (AR) × Artemis Fowl (AF)

Dead Man’s Party by thealphaaxolotl Post-canon strangers to friends to lovers!Alexmis featuring ‘oh my god they were roommates’, with your standard mutual pining as well as lashings of tension and angst.

There are references to a canonical (but technically temporary) character death if you don’t read that. MI(6 Degrees of Separation) by mobilisinmobili Imo, anything written by Mobi is great. The source media go really well together and the characterisation feels natural. As always the worldbuilding is very well done, leaving a vivid impression of the gritty underworld espionage and crime both belong to.

Miraculous Ladybug (ML) × Undertale (UT)

Miraculous Tale by awkwardnarturtle This better fits the definition of a fusion than a crossover, honestly. The ML characters are effectively transposed into the world of Undertale without just feeling like an expy and everything comes together so well. Marinette and Chat’s relationship is delightful to read while the little hints of mystery here and there evoke that nostalgic eagerness to discover the game’s secrets.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica (PMMM) × Avengers

Incursio by Mr. Omelette The worldbuilding on the PMMM side has definitely influenced my own headcanons and the characterisation is rather fitting. Also, a family can be one American supersoldier displaced through time and two magical girls displaced across space.

Assassination Classroom (AssClass) × Boku no Hero Academia (BNHA)

Open Doors by NerdofSpades Another fusion for the list! This series masterfully blends the two universes together and Izuku’s character development takes an interesting turn as he is irrevocably shaped by the assassination classroom for the rest of his life.

C - A ship you have never liked and probably never will (be nice)

The probably never will is the tricky part. There's pleeenty of NOTPs to go around, but I have also encountered versions of ships I didn't like that made me like them in the end, or there are aspects of the ships that I do appreciate.

So something that I'm really sure of nobody/nothing could make me like and I never liked. Let's go with the very first ship that comes to mind there. Bruce Wayne and Diana Prince. Just does not work for me and I'm very sure I'll never come around on it. I also have veeery solid OTPs for both characters too; I'm a multishipper at heart so it's rare for me to have an actual One True Pairing for a character and those are both characters where this rare instance applies, so that weighs heavy in too.

M - Say something genuinely nice about a ship that you don’t ship (or its shippers, or anything related to you)

This is way harder unprompted, like that I'd have to think of a ship too, to say something nice about. xD

Uuuhm so let's go with shippers. Despite not sailing the ship itself, I do like Karadox shippers - Brainy/Kara - because they're a real nice bunch, the ones I've met through the Supergirl fandom? And I also think they're really, really chill.

Because their ship, despite being a major ship for Kara in the comics, was not endgame - or even a brief ship - on the TV show. And they didn't go about harassing actors and fans about it. They're happy with the crumbs they get and while obviously disappointed their ship didn't sail, they didn't get nasty about it?

That just stood out all the more prominently in comparison to certain other shippers within that fandom? Not to name names, but I think if you are familiar with the Arrowverse, you know which shippers in the same situation acted wildly different. *clears throat*

So, especially contrasted by these, it really stood out to me how friendly Karadox shippers are? And generally also more open to other ships, like multishipping themselves or generally accepting that other people may ship these characters with other characters.

(Mind you, I can not speak for all of them, I'm sure there are some rotten apples in the bunch too, but that's always the case. The overall fandom behavior though, and the lovely individuals I've met have given the ship a very good name.)

@da-awesome-one asked me a similar question in january, and i wasn’t quite sure how to answer it, so i opened up the conversation to others on tumblr, and we had some fun making observations in the replies!

however, this week, two similar questions on this topic have popped into my inbox (including yours!), and so i’ve started to really ask myself about what is going on in my interpretations… what am i doing, exactly?!

and once i started to think that way, i couldn’t really stop. 😂😭 so i will do my very utter best to try to answer this question comprehensively, as clearly as i can!

this goes without saying, but it bears mentioning anyway: whatever follows under this cut, please remember that these interpretations are just that—interpretations! my thoughts and opinions have formed over the past twelve or so years (at the time of writing this post), and you’ll notice in some of the syntax that follows that i am referring to the characters as if they just are the way that i interpret them, but this is due to convenience of getting the point across; it is not to say that these ideas are the “real” or “true” characterizations of these two fictional characters remember, nothing is real everything is all made up lmao. but for real, though.

tiny details from the guardians of childhood book series that i have accidentally picked up purely 1000% from rotg fanart on tumblr and unfortunately i don’t think i could even provide proper list of what i “know” (sometimes i prefer headcanons to canon, and i tend to forget what i have cherry-picked! if you want more on this, i can add a bit more to the post, too, in an edit), but think in broad terms like "mother nature is pitch's daughter," pitch's tragic!backstory, toothiana wields two swords, nightlight exists but i don't know much about him... microscopic knowledge of this canon, tbh 🙏

i have never read any of the rotg books, or any of the other related frozen-universe stories

(all of my recent canon knowledge is all that i have gained from @callimara in her 2-hour long video lolooool, but even then, i would not have sought it out had she not so lovingly crafted it!!) 

to me, canon is a set of guidelines! 

for better or worse, my interpretations of these character types have solidified in my head. 🙏 after writing them for so long, they’re just… jack and elsa.

The Lux Noctis: Voidlight

Hello everyone! As promised, here is the very first of the Nightlights- or as I like to call them, Lux Noctis, to avoid any confusion between Nightlight the character and Nightlight the brotherhood/species (is that the right term??)

If you're wondering what this is, well, let me tell you! :D A while back, I was hit with "why the hell did this piece of lore get thrown out the window after we got a little whiff of it??" that being said, the piece of lore I'm talking about is the bit about the "7 stars of nightlight" we got in the books.

Now, like many fans, I do not see the majority of Book 5 of the Guardians of Childhood Book series :) but honestly, Nightlight and his origins, including the Lux Noctis, have captivated my interest ever since I first heard of them, and after learning of what they do in the books... safe to say I was kind of disappointed. So, as any good fan with a bad habit of hyperfixating on the smallest of things would, I decided to give the Lux Noctis their own stories that include personality, backstory, and some biology and lore.

Full disclaimer going forth from here, I took all the good stuff of the GoC lore and threw the rest away or completely made it up myself. In all technicality, the Lux Noctis are my OCs even though they're supposed to fill in the position of canon characters. That being said, ROTG and GoC do not belong to me as all of you should already know! All rights are with Dreamworks and William Joyce.

I also want to thank @josiedoe for being my idea bouncer for these kids! without their help, I might not have come up with half the stuff I did!

Meet Voidlight! The eldest of the Lux Noctis! They go by all pronouns and is half black hole, half Fearling, full Lux Noctis! The core thing will be explained in the master post.

I know, I know, "how can a Nightlight be a Fearling?" you're asking. Well, that ties into their creation. Canonically, a Lux Noctis is made from the light of a star, 1000 children's laughter, and the hair of the parent Lunanoff. Yeah, that's part of the "I chose to throw out the window" lore. Mostly. There will be a post explaining the Biology of stars in this universe, I promise, but all you need to know for now is that:

During a Fearling attack on the very first Tsar Lunanoff and his wife, they had accidentally called on the aid of the nearby sentient but dormant massive supergiant star, which was also being attacked by Fearlings. This massive supergiant, let's call it Solaria (note: you don't have to remember this) ends up collapsing in on itself just as it was answering the call, but because it had already started to awaken, the first Lux Noctis was born from the collapsing star, accumulating roughly 10 solar masses of a black hole but also simultaneously leaving behind 1-3 solar masses that soon formed a neutron star in Solaria's place.

Okay, that explains the black hole thing (and I'm sure many of you are screaming at me that black holes and neutron stars can't be created from the same massive supergiant- I know that and I decided to ignore it because of magic), but what about the Fearling part? Simple. We never got an origin for Fearlings, so we can assume they're a naturally occurring thing. Therefore they must have come from somewhere. what else consumes relentlessly, is dark, and means death in space? Black holes. Fearlings come from black holes and that is all I am saying here until I get that post about the star biology and lore up.

Now that we have their origin established, we can go on with the story in an abridged version so you don't have to continue reading. In short, Voidlight eradicates the Fearling hoard attacking the Tsar and Tsarina of that time and gets appointed honorary guard of the Lunanoffs but many don't really trust him for her Fearling qualities. She fights with a bo-staff but doesn't really need it because, again, Fearling abilities.

Voidlight served the Lunanoffs for two generations before exhaustion finally took hold of them and was soon dismissed and formed the first star of the Lux Noctis constellation, a brown dwarf. I know its only 1/80 of a solar mass but hear me out: Voidlight doesn't want to endanger people and if they revert to a black hole, he might just end up pulling someone into his gravitational pull, therefore for 2 years, she hasn't eaten a thing and when black holes don't "eat" anything they shrink (there's a lot more science than shrinking and growing but we'll keep it simple. Also magic.)

Rise of the Guardians

Hi, everyone, I’ll keep this nice and short:

Rise of the Guardians often had me waking up at seven in the morning just so I could watch it. And every time I did, I quoted some of my favorite lines (the Antarctica scene was my favorite), though time passed and the DVD laid dusty and unused in our DVD cabinet. 

Then, well, 2020 happened. Life around me went to shit, but I was mainly doing fine. That didn’t mean I was actually doing fine- just mainly fine. One day I rediscovered Rise of the Guardians on Tumblr, and as I scrolled through the many pieces of work that have been shared, it was like watching the movie again for the first time. 

I was told, and will be told, that I need to get my head out of fiction and into “real life.” But as I chat through Discord about this beloved movie, sometimes about random stuff, I couldn’t feel any better.

So, I should be thanking Rise of the Guardians. And don’t get me wrong- I am. But this post goes out to the fans, the ones that I know I can count upon whenever I’m up or down. Because this year has been a lot of downs. And I know that, thanks to them as well as a few others, maybe this year will be a little more bearable than we first thought.

All we have to do is believe. 

Happy birthday, RotG. We will never forget you. You taught us how to see wonder in everything, when and how to remember our fondest memories during difficult times, what a dream can really be, that hope can be everywhere if you look hard enough, and what fun really is. But you also taught us how to fear, how to fight through it, and when fear is good.

[ROTG] Cruel Summer

Notes: This is the first time I made a ROTG human!au and modern!au fanfic. If the conversations feel weird I do apologize - I am not good in writing social interactions (I am bad at interacting with others) but I have tried my best!

I do not own Rise of the Guardians and the song Cruel Summer. Rise of the Guardians belongs to Dreamworks and Cruel Summer belongs to Taylor Swift.

Jack hated summer.

Most people would love to catch the warm rays of the sun and to have more fun during the extended daylight. Jack understood that.

Jack’s friends loved summer too.

North would carry out his outdoor activities like hiking as long as the sun was up. He loved exploring and he wanted to see the wonder in everything.

Bunnymund loved the sight of greenery in summer. Besides, longer days meant that he could work on his garden longer, and summer rain would help his plants to grow better.

Tooth would leave the town to go for birdwatching. She loved to be surrounded by nature, and hear the birds chirping. It was the only time she could properly destress herself. 

Sandy took this opportunity to take some naps outdoors. He would sleep on a hammock as the summer breezes swayed it gently, allowing him to fall asleep easily.

But Jack. Jack could not stand the summer heat.

Jack always felt like he was melting. He needed to blast air conditioning in full force when he was in his house. He only went out to the beach, the swimming pool or the fountain to cool down. He would buy plenty of cold drinks and ice cream to satisfy himself with the cold feeling.

Jack preferred to go out at summer night. The temperature was at least cooler and more bearable for him. He would go to bars to relax and listen to music. He was usually by himself and he rarely talked to others. He just observed other people.

Jack thought this summer was going to be like every summer he had in the past – alone under the gruelling heat – as what he would describe as a “cruel summer”. He was proven wrong when he caught a glimpse of a man in a black suit sitting next to him at the bar.

Jack was amused that someone could wear a suit and still survive under the hot season. “Still wearing that suit under the summer heat?” he asked the man in a playful way.

“Says the one who won’t retire the hoodie from their closet,” the man replied with a smug smile.

Jack knew that he had lost. He was still wearing his favourite blue hoodie and he was unwilling to change it no matter what season it was. “Okay, you win,” he said sheepishly.

The man let out a small chuckle. “Nice try, young man. But I never lose in a sass battle,” he stated proudly.

“Oh, we’ll see about that,” Jack replied confidently and pulled out a mischievous smile. He loved challenges.

“My name is Jack,” he introduced himself.

“Pitch Black. But you can call me Pitch,” the man introduced himself.

Since their first meeting, Jack and Pitch had been hanging out in bars, and occasionally at parks during nighttime. Jack was glad to find someone who hated the summer like him. Besides, Jack never knew that Pitch could be so much fun. Even though he was a sophisticated gentleman who lived in a mansion on the outskirts of town, he sure knew how to make Jack laugh with his sassy attitude and sarcastic remarks. They constantly had back-to-back banters and they all ended in laughs. 

At times, though, Pitch would make some moves on Jack when they were both alone. He would gently grab Jack’s chin and close the distance between them slightly as he whispered to the young man. When they walked, he would ask Jack whether he could hold his hand. Jack did not mind his physical acts. In fact, he liked them.

The longer they interacted, the more they uncovered their true selves. Jack could relate to Pitch’s loneliness and his desire for some company. After all, he was a man who had so much riches and knowledge, yet he had no friends and family. Jack had left his family to live by himself after graduating high school. Although he had North, Bunny, Tooth and Sandy as his friends, they were constantly busy in their works. Jack did not want to disturb them, so he went off to do things alone.

Jack and Pitch did appreciate each other’s company. Though, Jack wanted more than this. He wondered whether Pitch felt the same as well. He wondered who would make the first move – him or Pitch. He also wondered what moves Pitch would make next. 

Jack was overwhelmed by his thoughts that he was unaware that he had been drinking too much. Eventually he became drunk and Pitch was quick to notice it. Pitch sighed and he carried Jack to his car. He placed him at the back seat of the car and fastened the seatbelt for him. He then proceeded to drive Jack back to his house.

As Pitch was driving, Jack started to cry. Pitch began to worry about him, but he also believed that it could be the effect of alcohol on Jack. Once he reached Jack’s house, he carried him to his room and carefully placed him on the bed.

“Are you okay, Jack?” Pitch asked him. He wanted to make sure that he was fine before he left.

“Y-Yeah… I’m fine…” Jack answered groggily.

“Just… call me when you have rested well,” Pitch said as he ruffled his messy white hair. “Goodnight, Jack.”

“Mmm… goodnight… Pitch…” Jack replied, still feeling tipsy.

Pitch smiled and left a small kiss on his forehead. Jack was taken by surprise. Before he could react, Pitch had left, and exhaustion took over him.

A few hours later, Jack woke up in the middle of the night. His body was heating up. He was sweating and he had a headache. He felt uncomfortable. He quickly took off his hoodie and opened the windows to get some fresh air. 

He lied down on his bed, trying to recall what happened when he was drunk. He could briefly remember Pitch asking him whether he was okay, and that he should call him after waking up. Though, the one thing that he remembered most was the kiss on the forehead. He blushed at the thought of it.

As his headache subsided, Jack grabbed his phone from his trousers and dialled Pitch’s number. He hoped that Pitch had not gone to sleep yet.

“Hello?” Pitch answered the call.

“Hey, Pitch,” Jack replied with a small smile. “Just letting you know that I am okay now.”

“That’s a relief,” Pitch said, and Jack swore that he could imagine him smiling on the other side. 

“Haha, yeah,” Jack blurted out and chuckled.

There was an awkward silence.

“Uhm… Pitch-”

“I think you should rest, Jack. You may have a hangover later.”

Jack was saddened to hear that. Even though Pitch was right, he wanted to hang out with him more.

“It’s okay, Jack. We still have plenty of time together once you completely recover. I will be at my mansion today, and if you need anything, you can just call me.”

Jack let out a long sigh. Pitch was right, and there was nothing he could do about it. “Yeah, you’re right.”

Pitch let out a small chuckle. “Well, take care, Jack.”

“I will. Bye.”

Once the phone call ended, Jack let himself fall onto his bed. He groaned at the thought that he failed to ask Pitch about the forehead kiss. Though, as he started thinking about the phone conversation earlier, Jack was certain that he had feelings for Pitch, and that Pitch had feelings for him too.

He needed him, and he needed more of him.

Fever dream high in the quiet of the night

Jack continued to rest even after the sun had risen. He wanted to make sure that he was completely fine if he wanted to see Pitch late at night. He wanted to tell him about his true feelings. Although Pitch would advise him to do so by phone, Jack felt that it would be more genuine to tell him personally.

As night fell, Jack went out and he had his hood covering most of his face. He took a brief stop at a vending machine that was on his path to Pitch’s mansion. He brought a bar of chocolate and a can of soda from it. He remembered hanging out with Pitch right here, where they joked about screwing up their relationship.

Hang your head low in the glow of the vending machine

We say that we'll just screw it up in these trying times

Looking back at the memory, Jack hoped that their relationship would last. Besides, they had to keep their relationship a secret. After all, many people, including Jack’s friends would find it weird that a gentleman like Pitch was dating a young boy still in college.

Jack wanted Pitch to know everything about him, and he wanted to know everything about Pitch as well. He no longer wanted to hide secrets just because he was afraid of sabotaging their relationship.

Jack arrived at Pitch’s mansion. Pitch had brought him here a few times, so he knew his ways around the place. He found a gate that would lead him to the garden, and he snuck in. He hoped to find Pitch there and confess to him.

And I snuck in through the garden gate

Every night that summer just to seal my fate (Oh)

Jack found Pitch was enjoying his tea in the gazebo. He came out of the bushes to face him.

“Jack, what are you doing here?” Pitch was shocked to see him.

Jack took the hood off. “Pitch, there’s something I have been dying to tell you,” he said, and Pitch listened.

And I scream, "For whatever it's worth

I love you, ain't that the worst thing you ever heard?"

Jack looked down to the ground. He did not know how Pitch would react to his confession. Suddenly, he felt a finger on his chin, and his face was lifted to meet Pitch’s. Jack could feel his cheeks heating up as he saw Pitch’s devilish grin. From there he knew that Pitch felt the same as he did.

He looks up, grinning like a devil

They tried out many activities like swimming and surfing at night, stargazing, having a barbeque at Pitch’s garden, and making cocktails. Furthermore, their relationship had become more intimate since the confession, and they were more comfortable to give each other physical and emotional affection. They had made many wonderful memories this summer.
