Tip for non Hispanic ppl writing Spanglish
*I initially wrote this at 1 am so like, keep that in mind as you decipher this lol
*context is key when speaking Spanglish, if your character is in a professional setting they probably won’t speak Spanglish unless it’s to a fellow co worker who also speaks Spanglish. It’s more of a casual way a speaking yk?
Also parents, I avoid Spanglish with my parents unless we’re switching from just speaking Spanish to just speaking English. But that’s depends from family to family.
It’s typically like switching sentences and not dropping in random words.
Example “ es Que fui a la tienda, and they were out of milk”
Example “ te ves cansada, did you sleep last night?”
“La neta” is and extremely common Mexican slang term, typically means, honestly. It can also be used to mean ‘really?’
Honestly example:
“La neta, Im tired”
Or “La neta, estoy cansada. Im going to bed”
In the case it means “really?”:
ex.) “Neta?! They said that?!”
I personally say “ de que” which is basically saying “like”, it’s a filled term, before saying a sentence in either English or Spanish
example “ de que idk it won’t work”
I’m Mexican so I use “ósea” a lot in both languages. Another substitute for words like:
“I mean,” “it'd be,” ”like,” “so,” “that is,” “therefore,” and “or.”
Ex. “ ósea, it looks weird idk”
The famous “ pero like” I personally don’t use a lot but an example of how it’s used in Spanglish is “ pero like, how did it happen?”
Sometimes I Just say “ fuck” but like in my Mexican accent or in a sentence.
“ fuck, perdí mi pulsera”
When I get startled I cuss in both English and Spanish but a Spanglish example would be
*insert random startling noise
“ ala verga! That scared me” or “ hijo de tu puta madre!” when something REALLY scared the shit out of me lol
“Chingada madre, where did that come from”
Rlly insert any cuss word in there and it probably works in Spanglish.
Edit bc I thought of this the morning after
In Mexican Spanish for whatever reason the word “madre” can be used like kinda like a cuss word lol.
Example “ Me vale madres”
Which in English would translate to “I don’t value mothers” but in practice means “I don’t give a shit” or “I don’t care”.
Another Mexican deep cut is the word “pedo” which yes, means fart but we’ve really given the word so many alternative meanings like
“ no es mi pedo “ = “not my problem”
“Estoy bien pedo” = “in rlly drunk”
“Vas a la peda?” = “ are you going to the party/kickback”
There’s more but that’s like the basics lol.
Also another Mexican term is “Aguas”… which literally translates to “waters” but it’s used as a warning.
“Aguas, there’s car coming”
The most famous of Mexican slang has to be “wey” or “guey” depends on how you spell it. But it just means dude. Another term that goes in hand is, “no mames” which basically means “are you kidding me”.
*men for whatever reason hate when the girl they’re dating or are into calls them wey. I think it’s because it’s seen as either improper or as like friend zoning.
“Wey, you’re not gonna believe this”
“No mames wey, look at this”
Another term is “equis” which basically means whatever
“How was the party?”
“Estuvo equis”
Another example
“ now was she dressed?”
“Equis, nothing crazy nothing wow”
*I recommend for Mexican characters looking into the words, or you can just ask me I just don’t wanna make this longer than I already have lol, “mamar”/“mamo”/“mamon”, each you would think is the same but no, no they are not and using one in the wrong context could be catastrophic lol. They are vital words to our vocab
If you’re writing to a character from a specific country, take the time to learn some slang. Sometimes slang crosses over, sometimes even we use slang we learn from each others dialects. Personally I love “joder”/“no jodas” because of the shows from Spain.
But take the time because if you write a Colombian character using most of the slang I’ve used above, you’d get a lot of hate from Colombians lol.
Some bad Spanglish examples would be
“ why didnt you eat your comida?”
Like no. Just no. Inserting a random Spanish word doesn’t equate to Spanglish, at least not in most Latin peoples lives
“ you look cansada” also just no.
*Edit I saw someone post abt this and I felt like adding it in
If you do insert a random Spanish word or vice versa it’s because you forgot the word but that involves a lot of blanking and being annoyed you can’t dig the simplest word out of you sub conscience lol
Example: “ you look, FUCK what’s the word! You know when you’re cansada…TIRED. You look tired”
Another commenter addition I’ll be adding is using “eh” as a filler instead of “um”. I use both but even in English I default to using “eh” or “ehmmmm”
The worst is when you don’t remember the word, only to have it appear in your subconscious hours later lol
Another fav filler word is “deste” which equates to another more Central American term “vaina” but a less refined way of saying it. Essentially they mean “thing” but that thing can be anything. It’s kinda a word when you’re to lazy to say the actual word.
“Pásame el deste”
*passes them x ítem
“No I meant the remote”
*trying not to kill the person because they could’ve said remote the whole time but chose not to
Sometimes we use bad Spanglish on purpose just to be funny
“Que sad” “Que cute”
* i personally love inserting the word cute into my vocab in Spanish just cuz so to each their own
Something I do is like say something in English and immediately say the exact same thing in Spanish. Or like I’ll say an exclamation in one language then end in the other.
“ GO GO GO, VÁMONOS APÚRATE”
“Que asco, gross”
“WOW, que bueno”
Also if you’re writing like couples tbh nicknames in Spanish would be reserved for when you’re speaking in Spanish and same for English, but each couple is different so if you rlly want to leave a nickname in Spanish in go for it. If you rlly want the endearment to be “ mi amor” please remember that after like the first or second time the Spanish speaker would probably just refer to their S/O as “ amor” or switch between the two.
Which brings me to the terms “mami/mamita” and “papi/papito”. Now, while they Can and are by some used in a sexual manner, they can also be used as general terms of endearment. My mom will sometimes call me mamita or my brother papito.
Amongst couples though it’s just kinda said, I saw someone describe it was you just give motherly energy so “mami” is said lol which I get oddly enough.
Once a couple is well established or just comfortable the woman can refer to her S/O as “ viejo” which is old man lol, but it’s like cute. On the flip side idk it’s typically seen as offensive when a man calls his S/O “vieja” but that depends on culture to culture.
Again mami and papi don’t have to be sexual but can be.
Another simple thing you can do is look up nicknames for certain names.
Examples:
“Mike” pronounced “Mique” for Miguel. Some people like to use “Mickey”, that gained popularity from an old Mexican singer lol.
“Ponchó” For Alfonso
“Ale” Can be used for Alejandro/Alexandra/Alejandra
Another thing I thought of is amongst siblings when referring to our parents we will say like
“Haz visto a mi mamá”
Which means have you seen “my mom” even though she’s both our mom… idk it’s weird but a nice little touch you could add to your writing lol
I get rlly annoyed reading bad Spanglish, sometimes it’s just painfully cringe and just obvious a non Spanish speaker wrote it, and I realize it’s bc most of y’all didnt grow up with it so like this is just what is typical Spanglish most Hispanic ppl grow up speaking, obviously not everyone speaks like this but figured I’d give tips from someone who actually speaks English and Spanish and switches between.
If I missed anything feel free to add on or if you disagree add examples

JJBA OC- Valentino Echeverría Villalba
Usually used as a stand in for all parts, as opposed to belonging to only one part. Because of this, his role in the plot changes. He has a specific design in a Japanese uniform, pictured right, but his original design is based on a Spanish bull fighter. I just think they dress cunty. They both have a theme of body parts bc i like that.
Some basics of his character stays the same though:
Born in Valencia, Spain 🇪🇸
Cis Bisexual
His stand is Gorguts, which senses things. He’s had Gorguts since he was young. With Gorguts, he “people watches” (stalking). Its like a tv show to him.
He keeps to himself for the most part. He doesn’t like to involve himself in drama in general but especially when stalking, unless he sees something pretty bad like abuse. Although, he’s no vigilante. He will stand by and watch if it’s happening to someone he hates, or even join in if he feels strongly. Or, he will help people he likes. Small gestures of affection <3
Anytime he intervenes, he makes sure it looks like random chance. A chandelier or shelf falling. Electricity randomly going out. Or if he’s helping, itself something like moving a dangerous object out the way. Stoping them from tripping. Returning a lost object.
Usually an antihero. A lot of morally gray qualities like stalking and perversion, but means well. In his eyes it’s the main characters interfering with him, not the other way around.
Very analytical in his approach to life. He isn’t emotional or empathetic at all, which is why he’s somewhat of a villain. For example, he doesn’t think that stalking is wrong because he “never does anything with the information” and “what they don’t know won’t hurt them.”
Usually stoic and calm. There’s nothing to be excited over, usually. But when he’s creeping on people and something interesting happens, he gets ecstatic. He shivers, he breathes heavily, eyes wide, heart beating fast, and even small hiccups of pleasure. Oddball.
He’s a medical student studying to become an ear nose and throat doctor. It’s honestly a really easy job considering his stand has an innate understanding of the ears, nose, and mouth.
He’s had Gorguts since he was a kid. It was a defense mechanism for being attacked by a stalker.
SDC: Another antagonist that was sent by DIO to kill the SDC. He gets domesticated, and helps them find DIO and detect enemies. He survives, and also helps Jotaro on his other adventures
DIU: His father works at a Spanish company in Japan. His family moved there when he was 8, so he’s pretty adjusted to Japanese life. I imagine he would be a 3rd year, so 18 years old. He’s one of those antagonists that becomes domesticated, but is distant from the group. Kinda like Hazamada or Tamami.
Also, I wanted his name to be VERY butchered in Japanese. I think it’s funny. “Barenchino Echeberia Biyaruba” oh my god. Also fun fact: Echeverría is original a Basque name, so it was actually translated twice.
GW: He doesn’t belong in any gang. People know him more as an urban legend; the guy that watches all but never intervenes. A lot of people don’t think he’s real because he’s so hidden. The Bucci gang track him down to get his help in finding Diavolo, but they need to convince him to join their cause. It leads to a disagreement, and ultimately he doesn’t care enough to join them. He gives some very harsh but sensible words to Giorno. “What makes an idiot kid like you think you could take down the boss of the mafia? Even then, what makes you think doing that alone would stop drugs? There are other gangs selling them. What makes you think you could take over the mafia anyway? You’re an idiot who doesn’t understand how the mafia works. Drugs are how they make money. How are you gonna make your money if you don’t sell drugs?” He is framed as an antagonist, but isn’t actually a bad person.
I like to think they never found Valentino in person, but they managed to find Gorguts (Gorguts can speak)
SO: Put in prison for stalking and trespassing. he’s like Anasui: weird and creepy except at least he’s not a creep to Jolyne specifically, just to everyone. He also means well at least :/
Tbh him and Gwess are in a fucked up relationship
~
Connection to Gorguts: anything Gorguts senses, so can Valentino. This can cause sensory issues in Valentino, especially as he uses 3 or more senses. It’s overload, which causes Valentino to just sit there whenever using Gorguts, almost like he’s in a catatonic state. He can get so invested in Gorguts, that he zones out “irl”. It leaves him vulnerable to attack: ironic that Gorguts was designed to keep him safe from stalkers, it can go kilometers away, yet someone right in front of him can get him if they time it right. Because of this, Valentino mostly uses Gorguts when in a safe place. Valentino likes to hide this as reading along to an audiobook or watching something on his phone with headphones in. Something that would logically mean he cannot sense around him, just incase anyone sees him being borderline catatonic. Although using Gorguts is not 100% disabling. If it’s something simple, Valentino can handle it.

hello :) you probably won’t recall but it’s the “ace moves around purely by unnecessary flips” anon frommmmm last year I think….? It’s been a while lol, anyway I recently got back into LU and I was wondering if u had any language headcanons for the team? My own take on this is that Lexi is probably fluent in French or Spanish or something like that, bc I’d imagine her as the type to take a language course for the mental & cultural ~enrichment~, and Rev probably knows how to speak/understand/read/write like 23 different languages just bc he has so much spare time and gets so bored that he started learning a few to keep himself occupied. I also think Ace would know how to say so many completely random & useless phrases in a BUNCH of different languages solely bc of some multilingual roles he’s had to play, but he isn’t actually fluent in any of them. I can’t see slam or duck as being interested in that sort of stuff, and I feel like tech would be way too busy to pick up new dialects, but I’m curious to hear ur thoughts on it :)
Hiiiii I remember you!!
But yes in general my headcanons are in line with a lot of what you said. In my head I imagine that they're all at least (to some degree) bilingual because of the close cultural proximity of a 'city planet'. Lexi 100% has taken up language courses and is fluent in at least two other languages other than English.
Ace picked up a lot from being on movie sets and yes he knows a bunch of useless phrases but also could do things like order food or ask for directions in some of them. @intheyear2772 suggested that Ace is a huge anime fan (which I love) and so I imagine that he picked up Japanese from that.
Yes Rev does speak/understand/read/write like 23 languages and counting. Nothing can stop his search for enrichment. He's also a fan of historical linguistics and knows a lot about how languages evolved.
Duck!! Ok so another one of @intheyear2772's headcanons was that Duck did a lot of odd jobs pre-meteor and some of which took him out to sea on ships and stuff. So because of that I headcanon that yes he doesn't have much interest in languages but his time away from Acmetropolis sort of forced him to... well not learn lmao but understand super basic words/phrases. He doesn't retain much memory of it afterwards and tbh a lot of it was purely context clues, but some words last longer than others. Like this:
Languages aren't really Tech's thing although I think he probably can do conversational Spanish. You're right I think he's probably too busy and with too much on his plate to devote time to languages, and it would be interesting if Coyote Genius struggles with it, so when it comes to translating runes or anything on missions Rev gets to step up.
And yes I agree with you on Slam! I think that he could sign in more than one language though. Also that everyone on the team could sign ASL but with different levels of proficiency.

BIOGRAPHY.
born in seoul, south korea.
parents were very well known ceos, both running very successful corporations.
and of course, they wanted sangjun to follow in their footsteps.
parents were pretty strict and didn’t really allow him to do well.. anything.
however, they did buy him whatever he wanted and spoiled him in that way.
and due to both of those things combined, he started to rebel at a really young age. ( i’m talking like 10 )
so he’d sneak out, graffiti people’s houses and break things and the likes.
never got caught for it, though, knowing that if he did his parents would have kicked him out and probably disowned him for his behavior.
but one of the reasons he never got caught being a rebel was the fact he was bringing straight a’s in school, was always the very top of his class and from his parent’s perspective? he was a model child.
however, he hated that, hated having to live under his parent’s shadows and be this cookie-cutter version of himself they wanted him so desperately to be.
but he played it off, juggling the 'angel’ side of him with the rebellious tendencies that continued to grow worse and worse with each passing year.
god, high school was so different, though. he’d rebel more and more every single day, pushing the limits of getting caught.
however, word got out pretty quickly about just how wealthy his family was and kids started to bully sangjun for it, causing his anger to get the better of him until he lashed out so bad it landed one of those bullies in the hospital for copious amounts of injuries.
of course, his parents were pissed. grounded him for a solid month and in that time, he learned each and every way he could sneak out of his house at night, wandering the streets of seoul at all hours.
one of those nights he happened to run into a group of people who also went to his school, but instead of them bullying him for whatever reason, they commended him on standing up for himself like he had & told him there was a way to let out the pent up aggression that ended up sending a kid to the hospital.
his curiosity was lit up that night, eager to figure out what the hell they were talking about and a few days later, he was introduced to a scene that’d become far more intoxicating that anything he’d ever experienced before.
underground fighting. no rules, no shadows he had to live under, tons of money for each win under his belt? it was the life he never knew he wanted, but the second he got a taste of it, he wanted more.
so those late night strolls turned into him sneaking out of the house only to meet up with his new group of friends, all of which were clad in full black outfits .. traveling to some random person’s basement ( or abandoned buildings of numerous kinds ) only for sangjun to be able to release every single bit of pent up aggression he carried out on some stranger who’d never remember his name.
his parents? they were just as clueless as before, though, sam continuing to excel in school as well as his fights so much so that he found the perfect balance.. learned how to hide the scrapes and bruises from his mother & father all while continuing to be the top of his class.
not to mention he was juggling all of that and his acting career all at once, trying to hide certain things from his parents and the rest of the world because he knew it’d ruin his reputation.
however, due to the amount of stress that sat upon sam’s shoulders on a daily basis, he let himself slip up on his 21st birthday, parents stumbling into his apartment only to catch him drunk & high with a bunch of strangers surrounding him.
it was a moment he’d been scared of his whole life, worried his parents would just disown him right then and there...
but in all honesty? it was the most freeing night of sam’s life.
he didn’t have to pretend to be someone he wasn’t anymore, didn’t have to pretend to be a pure and innocent little thing who never did anything wrong. didn’t have to live up to the high expectations he’d set for himself so many years ago and god, he was hooked.
his parents not disowning him and continuing to pay for everything he wanted only fueling him to continue the downward spiral, living his life to the fullest, doing whatever the hell he wanted to... whenever the hell he wanted to.
PERSONALITY. ( PT 2. )
hides behind a wall of sarcasm, cockiness, anger and lust.
doesn’t really care to get to know people and had a tendency to push people away before they get too close to him. ( though it’s all a ruse. )
wears glasses to read and mess w computers, but hates them a lot and probably won’t wear them if people are around.
has two different wardrobes, one for when he’s around his parents. that consists of suits & dressy attire. and then one for when he isn’t that consists of ripped jeans, t-shirts, sweats & everything in between.
is …. stubborn as hell and refuses to ask for help with anything.
his motorcycle is literally his baby ??? like he ?? has a problem ??
fluent in a lot of languages, picked them up so that he didn’t need translators at his parents meetings and the likes.
lowkey worried that people will figure out that he’s actually v scared & stressed on the inside because that’ll cause him to start having to deal with his feelings, and he doesn’t wanna do that.
is the biggest flirt you will ever meet?? like if he’s speaking to you… its usually flirty as hell unless it has to do w business ( both his parents & his fights ) or he’s just known you for centuries ?
will try to get everyone to go to bars n parties with him because that’s his life in a nutshell ??
drinks..heavily.. like every night?? it’s a problem tbh.
nerd on the inside though like owns so many comic books, loves to play video games, read books, plays piano.. loves to sketch, paint & the likes.
he cares… god he cares so much about people and the world but he pretends to hate everything because it’s easier than letting people in.
full of horrible and cheesy pick up lines and jokes and frequently texts people said pick up lines and jokes.
owns a book that is full of nothing but blank pages and keeps it on his coffee table because he ‘relates’ to it.
is a highkey hoe but he tries to keep it on the dl ( he fails… miserably. )
super into fitness as it’s a way to keep him away from drinking every evening. ( that doesn’t work for him tho, oof.. )
also has bruised knuckles 24/7 & some other injuries he gets from his fights, plays it off like he’s just clumsy.
anger issues af. needs to get them in check.
actually super kind and caring once you’re able to see get past his wall?? which is really hard tbh but if you’re able to? he’s so loyal and caring it’s unreal.
has a bad habit of smoking whenever he’s stressed out, which is usually all of the time so he smokes…. more than he should ( though he won’t admit to being stressed out,,,,, ever in his life. )
highkey into cuddling and all the cute shit like that but would literally never tell a soul because then they’d see that he isn’t the ‘hardass’ he pretends to be on a daily basis.
is a burnt cupcake who has 'decent’ intentions but has extremely horrible execution skills.

8.2.18 // 4:30pm // school subjects and AP exams oh my
so i recently (ok not so recently i’m sorry super busy rn) got an ask from an anon about subject specific tips and ap exams. this is the masterpost i told you to look out for ;). there are no ap exams in college, but some of the stuff is still applicable. i did my best to be as comprehensive as possible and dump everything in one place. hope this is helpful! xoxo, m ps. guess where the actual tips are? if you said “under the cut” then you’re right bc i’m predicable af
tips by subject:
languages (i took spanish): 1. flashcards are your friend. i don’t care if they’re digital (would recommend quizlet or studyblue) or paper, but they help immensely with either vocab or things like remembering literature.
2. charts are also your friend. conjugations giving you a hard time? write out a chart of the different tenses and the conjugations for each subject. put down some of the irregulars too.
3. acronyms/pnemonics are also also your friend. a lot of these already exist, you just have to go find them. i’m pretty sure i still remember what “wedding” stands for for the spanish subjunctive.
4. it’s ok to start over. it’s easy to start a sentence based on what you’d say in english. you’re doing fine until *bam* you hit that word/phrase you really need but you have no clue how to say it. whether it’s an oral or written exam, take a few seconds to think about it and, if you can’t figure it out, just back track. restart the sentence and rework it. better to do that than to lose all your time thinking of one word you may or may not know.
5. skirt around things. if you can’t remember how to say fridge but you really need to say it for something, just say “machine that keeps food cold” or something. it might sound silly, but it gets the point across and removes the road block.
6. make a list. no, not a to do list. if there’s phrases you find yourself reaching for all the time, but you can never remember, make a list of them and their translations. it might be because its a phrase/part of a sentence structure you use a lot in your native language or whatever. make that list and drill just those few phrases into your head. it’s helpful
english/language arts: 1. proofread. i guarantee you’ll find a mistake, a sentence that makes no sense, or one that just sounds cringy. thank me later.
2. have a damn thesis. its ok if you just need to write and spit words/ideas out for a while to figure it out. but figure it out.
3. conclusion ~= introduction. for those of you who didn’t get the tilde, it means not. yes, they both tie your points to your thesis but they are not to same. do not just reword the same information in the conclusion. push your ideas just a little further. i usually like the push them a little bit outside the realm of what i talked about in my paper. for example, if i focused on the first 5 chapters of the book in the rest of my paper, i’ll expand the ideas to the rest of the book. or if i’m talking about female characters and focus on just one or two, i’ll use the conclusion to potentially connect it to another.
4. have favorites. pick a few fav transitions, sentence structures, and fancy vocab words. basically build a toolbox. this way you won’t have to think as hard when you want to “spice up” your work.
5. summaries only go so far. once you get to higher level english classes, there will be a lot of analysis of specific imagery, or wording, or dialogue. reading cliff notes is only going to give you the plot and none of this. if you don’t have time to read and you’ve been assigned a pretty standard english novel/play/whatever, take the time to look up some famous quotes or symbols. they’ll probably come up in discussion and this will help you look less unprepared.
6. have on question/comment ready. if your teacher/prof is into discussions and grades on participation, it’s handy to write down one (or a few) things. it’s easy to forget what you were going to say while you follow the discussion and it sucks to get docked points for not saying anything. even if it’s just a thoughtful question, jot it down.
history: 1. lol prob my weakest subject, just go see the apush (ap us history) section bc i don’t have much more for you than that.
science: 1. back to basics. i say it all the time, i’ll say it again. really understand basic concepts. they will come back. i’m serious.
2. pattern recognition. science problems are often times about recognizing patterns. once you identify the type of problem it is, even if you’ve never seen the exact one/something similar before, solving it becomes way easier.
3. make a recipe book. tied to the last one, but once you recognize a type of problem, you need steps to solve it. go through any practice problems you’re given to determine all the “types” of problems. once you’ve categorized them, make yourself a step-by-step guide on how to solve.
4. flashcards. you’ll have to know polyatomic ions or random biology facts. see languages tip #1 for more.
5. note your errors in lab. if you do something wrong, don’t just try to brush it under the table and forget about it. not that it’s a big deal, because its not, so don’t freak out. they’re just great opportunities to note sources of error. i mean obviously dont write in your lab report that you weren’t paying attention and mixed the wrong chemicals, but something like “we may not have waited sufficient time for the product to dry” can explain why you got 800% yield.
6. have a toolkit. kinda like a recipe book, but just a collection of straight facts that come up often. knowing common molecular weights and chemical properties (is ammonia acidic or basic?) will make things go faster. like i said earlier, polyatomic ions are also great.
7. brush up on some simple arithmetic. similar to the tool kit, this will just make things go faster. being able to quickly add things and calculate easy percentages (ex: 30%) will make things like hw and exams go faster. i’m of the opinion it’s always good to know how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide w/o a calculator (on paper, not all in your head)
bonus: math #5 and #7
math: 1. see science #1
2. see science #2
3. see science #3
4. see science #4. see a pattern here? you might wonder why you need to flashcard math, but it’s good for learning equations or the names of certain techniques. if the prof asks you to solve something using X technique and you don’t know what that is, that’s gonna pose a problem. also good for the unit circle (don’t get me started)
5. figure out your speed. this is applicable to most everything, but i find it most relevant for math. is it better for you to speed through the whole exam and then do it all again/check it over 2x? or for you to take it slow so you know you got everything right the first time? personally i use the first approach, but i’m a fast taker and prefer to have time to process between repeating problems instead of staring at it forever once and never looking again.
6. science #7. a lot of teachers will expect you to be able to do this.
7. go over the material a couple times. also applicable to everything. i find it’s easier to remember things when i know that concepts are connected. you might have learned X 3 weeks before Y, but if you go back over, you might realize they’re closely related. this will help you if you’re not sure on a test because you can reason through things using the connections you’ve drawn
tips by ap course (obv look at the subject above bc i will be giving *really specific stuff* here that i’ve gathered from experience. they’re also ordered by when i took them, sorry it’s not super logical but i didn’t want to forget one)
general ap course/exam tips: 1. practice exams. you need to be familiar with what will/will not show up. you don’t always need to simulate and real testing situation, but i’d recommend doing at least 1-2 that way. also *know how many questions they’re are you so can pace yourself!!!!*
2. college board is pretty good about giving topic breakdowns. use those. go through and figure out what topics you’re solid on and which need more work. the above tip is to help decipher what the topics actually mean bc it can be confusing.
3. give the free response a quick flip through. do the ones you’re confident on first.
4. make sure you know the policies/what you can bring. don’t want to forget something. also once our test administrator tried to stop us 10 minutes early, but we were on top of our shit and all gave her a death glare bc we knew when we were supposed to finish.
ap chemistry: 1. polyatomic ions and molecular weights. know them
2. chapter/section reviews (in addition to class notes) and how-to guides. my teacher made us make them and let’s just say your girl did *really* well (and i’m damn proud of that one)
3. do a quick skim of the free response. applicable to most exams but, the year i took it, they’d just remade and re-curved the exam and put *way* too many free response. like no one finished them. if that’s still the case, make sure you do the one’s you’re confident on. also, i did not get to like 3 questions and still got a 5. they may have fixed this idk. (sorry this is redundant but i wanted to give this ap chem exam specific info)
ap environmental science: 1. there is a lot of damn information here. i would use chapter outlines and pick out key terms, policies, and events etc. treat this like a history class.
2. for the exam, use common sense. most of the time, the most environmentally friendly answer is the right one. if you just have a general gist of the course and its topics, but don’t know a lot of details, go with your intuition and you should be fine. i didn’t have a lot of time to study for this one and this method worked for me.
ap calc bc: 1. memorize standard derivatives. power rule, sin and cos, chain rule. that’s important.
2. similarly, memorize standard integrals.
3. don’t forget +c for indefinite integrals. just don’t.
4. similarly, if it’s definite, don’t forget to evaluate at the end! super easy thing to do, but also super easy way to lose points if you forget.
5. if the integral looks complicated, that probably means there’s a “trick” involved. u substitution, integration by parts, trig substitution. something like that.
6. memorize some standard series’, operations, and types (arithmetic, geometric etc)
7. if you’re looking at a word problem, understand what is dependent on your variable and what isn’t (in other words, what’s a constant). for example, if it says the water flows into the barrel at 50 mL/s and flows out at 1/5 times the volume, that translate to F = 50 - (1/5)V. don’t make things more complicated by trying to write everything in terms of V (in this example). also, your equation might just be a constant term or just a variable term doesn’t have to be both.
8. know what your derivative is with respect to/what it really means. aka if your problem is talking about flow and volume, how are they related to each other? flow is the change in volume *with respect to time*. so if i differentiate volume with respect to time, i get flow. if i integrate flow with respect to time, i get volume. this also helps you make sense of word problems.
*disclaimer*: it is been 5 years since i took this class and i have taken quite a few math classes after. i apologize if i introduce anything that is a little irrelevant.
ap spanish language: 1. flashcard. like seriously. there’s gonna be vocab involved.
2. understand what’s asked. for the persuasive email. *be persuasive*
3. toolkit. i mentioned this before but this was probably the most useful for this class. our teacher gave us a bunch of fancier words to use instead of causar (to cause) because that was a word we’d need a lot. the one that still sticks with me 4 years later is fomentar. have a few alternatives for these kinds of super common words, a good greeting and closing for your email, and a set of good transitions. *make sure you know how to use them properly*
4. write stuff down during listening. you can either answer questions during the first listen, then take notes the second to catch stuff you missed or vice versa.
5. it’s ok to backtrack in the speaking. don’t let yourself get stuck and just not say anything. it’ll freak you out for the rest of the exam and will rob you from showing off what you know. also take notes of things you want to mention based off cultural knowledge of the situation related to the dialogue.
6. don’t zone out. with everything going on and all the stress, it’s easy to zone out (esp during the conversation). don’t do it or you’ll have a hard time responding and freak yourself out (again)
7. don’t lose your place in the convo! they give you a sheet that shows you how many times the other “person” will talk. i lost track and said goodbye one segment early. it was bad ok. all these conversation tips are from personal experience.
ap statistics: 1. know the different kinds of tests inside and out. know the differences and the conditions. if you’ve got that, you’re like 75% the way there.
2. be familiar with sample vs population. it’s a bit confusing, but take the time to understand.
3. ok sorry i really don’t remember anything else. this exam really isn’t that difficult (in my opinion), you’ll be ok.
ap physics c: 1. free body diagrams. understand how to draw them *and draw them*. they will carry you through mechanics. draw gravitational force, normal if there’s a surface, and then any other given forces.
2. basic equations. you get an equation sheet, but knowing the equations means you know the concepts and the relations between them. big ones are f=ma and the equations relating position (x), velocity (v), and acceleration (a). also friction f=uN.
3. *normal isn’t always the opposite direction of gravity!!!!* gravity is straight down. normal is perpendicular to the surface.
4. vector components. please don’t just add vectors. break them down into components and then add or you are so fucked.
5. get familiar with triangles. this will help with the whole component thing.
6. kirchoffs rules are so helpful. know them.
7. understand the relations between voltage/potential and current in terms of the properties of circuit elements. that means the equations for resistors, capacitors, and inductors.
8. know how to add in parallel and series. it’s important. also! if the circuit is drawn “weird” a good way to know series vs parallel is that parallel elements share two nodes and that series circuits only share 1.
9. sorry i kinda blocked out E+M bc i didn’t know what i was doing (or so i thought). i still got a 4 tho so that curve is generous.
ap us history: 1. chapter outlines. pretty self explanatory.
2. make a timeline. put important events, sentiments, policies, and presidents. if you can associate these things together into time periods it will be easier. most of the time, any one question (esp long response or whatever they’re called) will only focus on 1 time period.
3. sentiments are important. if you know nothing else, know these bc they will help guide you through questions by reasoning even if you know nothing else.
4. gilder lehrman (or similar us history summaries). these are tailor specifically to apush bc they are organized by period (i think that’s what they were called?). i actually fell asleep listening to these bc i didn’t have time to study. they were mildly helpful, but every little bit helps right?
ap psychology: 1. chapter outlines/flashcards. this course is based heavily on key terms and less so on larger concepts.
2. ok sorry i took this online i remember literally nothing except how annoying my teacher was and that the exam was easy. if you know terminology i think you should do fine.
ap biology: 1. there is a lot. go through all the topics and make sure you’re solid. start with the big picture, then think about narrowing down.
2. know how charts work. things like pedigrees, punnet squares, and evolution trees (that’s def not the right term). some of the exam will just be interpretation of this.
3. i am so sorry i remember nothing else.
ap spanish literature: 1. flashcards. title, author, time period, short summary, key elements (a line, character, symbol). this is *so helpful*
2. think about the works in relation to each other. you might be asked to compare them. even if they ask you to compare something on the reading list with something new, you’ll be familiar with the points you might talk about.
3. know the lit terms. more flashcards. associate them with a particular work if you can/need to.
4. don’t freak on the listening. a lot of the recordings are old and shitty quality. take a deep breath and try your best. know that the rest of the test takers (excepting maybe natives) are experiencing the same thing.
5. use that tool box. see general spanish and ap spanish lang.
this is so freaking long and i think the moral of the story is that i blocked out my senior year ap exams. i hope this was helpful and, if you have more questions, or want more stuff like this, let me know!

Unforgotten Night Live Blogging
lol I’m expecting entertainment because people watching it seem to be having a lot of fun despite the show being bad mostly.
Episode 1 (Sep 4)
1-1
2.8 million views, damn. Although not surprising considering all the episodes were getting 1.x mill views per episode when i previously checked
there’s no eng sub? using my extension to translate spanish to eng sub, seems accurate thus far
random korean but i understood it a bit
damn they’re kicking out a distressed and hurt sub
1-2
something about the editing... very hindi serial or soap opera esque
1-3
skipped through the rest of the part after they got to the room. the nsfw scene didn’t seem at all appealing
1-4
looks like shitty english breakfast
Episode 2 (Sep 5)
2-1
The piano music while Kamol’s chasing Kim through his apartment
Wild to see Kamol actually working and not in the way Kinn “worked” occasionally where he just blew people’s heads off but like... actually making plans and deals and stuff. idc much about the actual work yet though
Linguistics and Pronouns: Kamol uses chan as the I pronoun and coincidentally, absolutebl did a post on it today
He uses chan to refer to himself under most circumstances regardless of power dynamic in terms of subordinates or age or intimacy levels.
This is a formal/business use of the pronoun. It has very little to do with femininity and more to do with status. Almost like he is so powerful and confident in his masculinity that any association with chan that others may have are irrelevant under the context of a corporate or criminal environment. He uses nai as you with all his male counterparts, including his friends, subordinates, and lover.
I didn’t realize he used ‘nai’ as the you pronoun, I’ll keep my ears peeled for it
Episode 3 (Sep 5)
Kamol was like get to know me by moving in with me instead of the other way around and also lemme take a little break to wash my face with this advertised product
Day’s letting someone who’s hung up on him come to his home? Here I was thinking the random Day/Itt moments are kinda cute but will this lead to drama?
Episode 4 (Sep 6)
At least Day has Itt here too, so it won’t be like “oh you met him without my knowledge” drama
I heard some murmurs about Khom/Baiboon and as a lover of big ass age gaps, I’m curious but also, how old is Baiboon exactly?
lmfaoo the ending with Kim coming down the stairs to meet cherry and the editing of that is hilarious.
This episode was kinda fun actually
Episode 5 (Sep 6)
every moment of this is dramatic as hell, the cherry confrontation -> the wild editing of them sleeping together -> the tigers -> Kamol’s anger about the tigers
Parts 3 and 4 are kinda cute though, like them working beside each other. i think i’ll reblog some gifs of them from this episode.
no day/itt and no sight of baiboon this ep
Episode 6 (Sep 6)
lol cheek kisses in front of baiboon
damn outsmarting Danai and getting the officials on his side even though it’s stupid way to do it but I don’t expect more from the writers, I’m impressed they managed even this tbh
damn hope they were careful interacting with the tigers (they’re real right?)
Kom and Baiboon are cute, Baiboon making Kom food heh
Kim “worrying about Kamol’s bussiness” is endearing too, only to be followed by petty jealousy lol
Episode 7 (Sep 7)
nonsensical, illogical episode but I’ve come to expect that
“Kim’s smart, isn’t he?” Actually he’s dumb as hell, so it’s embarrassing for you that he caught onto your act
got a lot of Day/Itt with the child nephew Salmon and got a little bit of Kom/Baiboon as well.
“Don’t open the door for anyone” and guess what Kim does 2 seconds later
Episode 8 (Sep 7)
Nothing to say bc idc, I’m watching it on 2x speed and also using the >> button a few times
Episode 9 (Sep 7)
I think if I cared enough, I would’ve been more impressed with how transparent Kamol is and him wanting to tell Kim things like his ex(? or smth) and also his willingness to retire. Unfortunately, I’m skipping through this shit and so idc
Cherry is very beautiful though, curious to see her play someone nice
Some Kom and Baiboon
Episode 10 (Sep 7)
why is Kom being jealous or whatever, freaking checking Baiboon’s chat and telling Baiboon to not get too close to one of his friends, both of which Baiboon easily complies to agh. I really like big age gaps but not this dynamic
oh yeah people were going wild for the shower threesome but idc
anyway, speeding through this. I was originally gonna just watch up till ep 9 or 10 today and finish it tmrw but maybe i’ll just finish it off rn
Episode 11 (Sep 7)
Nothing to say bc idc, I’m watching it on 2x speed and also using the >> button pretty much through the whole thing. The ex Danil is extremely irritating lmao
Episode 12 (Sep 7)
Bruh bye so I’ve been skipping through the kidnapping and action but Kamol being super duper mad and threatening toward Day for having dated Kim before and making him saw is so cringe and annoying, ew
skipped through the happy ending too. live happily or whatever ig
Overall Thoughts:
I’ve gotten so good at pruning my To Watch list, I pretty much only have stuff I think I’ll genuinely like on there or for a specific purpose (like kBLs I think will be mid but gotta learn korean). This one though I thought could be fun, esp the relationship between Kamol and Kim and it apparently having an actual mafia plot, but yeah all of it was boring/bad. Still, couldn’t make myself mark it as Lost Interest or drop it halfway through, so I’m glad that at least it’s over and it won’t sit around on my MDL To Watch anymore.
also, saw the Yoon being harassed video, followed by the perpetrator’s angry rant about it, then him apologizing to her and gifting the fruit basket aghhhhh absolutely terrible
Rating: 4/10 (too harsh? I gave stuff that I had to mostly skip through like LBC/Wish You/My Engineer or with little to no redeeming qualities like Ocean Likes Me)
Tiktoks:
Cheek kiss in front of Baiboon

Paladins + Vehicles
Ok so I couldn’t get this out of my mind so let’s mcfreakin do this
Shiro
drives a Ford Expedition just as damaged as he is but listen, Black is a babe (high key based of a car I once drove)
Is mostly black except for some reason the hatch is khaki green and she’s missing bits of paint and has scratches and dents just everywhere
was the first car Shiro ever bought and he got her at a police car auction
he found a broken meth pipe hidden in the dash while he was replacing the heating core (nice)
she was super cheap bc she needed a lot of work but Shiro got her working like a champ!
she looks like she can breakdown at any second but shiro has driven this tank into the craziest situations
has driven over sidewalks to avoid waiting to turn at a light
said fuck it and drove over a huge ass snowback bc why not?
the one you call to move furniture or to get you when you get stuck
the official Camping Vehicle bc not only can she get into places a full size SUV shouldn’t physically be able too she’s the perfect tent/hauler!
Has phone alarms set up for all her checkups so he doesn’t miss a single oil change, brake check, tire rotation, or even spark plug replacement
he’s dedicated as fuck to his poor damaged bby
Has a ‘protection skeleton’ for good luck
his parents always had ‘protection angels’ so it’s traditional. he’s just morbid so protection skelly
Keith
has a red Honda CBR (Lance makes fun of his ‘crotch rocket’ but not so secretly gets him flustered)
Her name is officially Red but Keith always calls her ‘His Girl’
Will cry if she gets a scratch and will spend all day buffing it out
has totally made improvements to her and honestly, she can’t even be called a CBR anymore because wow he has replaced nearly all the stock parts with fancy illegal stuff
has spent the most money on his vehicle, like he spends more on Red than food. Shiro buys him groceries a lot
routinely races muscle cars and wins (of course)
but also has the most speed tickets bc this angry child doesn’t know what a speed limit is
“The day I go the speed limit will be the day my body gets driven to the morgue” Keith bby no
actually likes giving out rides so he always has two spare helmets (for small and large heads) and an extra leather jacket bc safety is important
will not let you ride if you don’t wear the jacket bc even tho he’s a speed demon Keith is super concerned with safety
once Red got bumped in a parking lot and fell over and it was honestly the worst day in Keith’s life
he stormed into the nearest store and demanded to see their camera feeds
WHAT CHUCKLEFUCK HIT MY BIKE I NEED THEIR LICENSE PLATE IM GONNA MURDER THEM
he scared the poor CS gal so bad she started crying and managers got involved and Keith just didn’t understand why he couldn’t see who hit Red bc this boy was out for blood
Police got called, Keith got escorted out, he tried to argue with the cop but things escalated and Shiro had to bail is baby brother out
after picking up Red ofc (Shiro has a portable ramp in his car. He. is. Prepared.)
Lance
has a 20 yr old Camry he affectionately calls Blue for short but her real name is essentially The Blue Babe of My Heart but he says it in spanish and I am not gonna try and translate that
he bought her super cheap from Hunk who had bought her as a turn around
Lance was hanging around Hunk’s shop and honestly it was love at first sight
Hunk was all for it because honestly Camry’s are freaking tanks and never die and Lance is a disaster
they’re perfect for each other
has the best smelling car. He lives for those little scenty things you put in the dash
whenever Blue makes weird noises he’s just like ‘I know babe, i know. I got ya. You can make it because you are such a good girl!’
he talks the most to his car and it’s just so precious
Unironically has fuzzy dice and everyone hates them but the last time someone tried to take them down while Lance was driving he nearly flipped the car in his rage. No one touches them if they want to live.
Never locks his car bc you can’t just start it like a normal car so no one can steal it. also, no one wants a 20 yr old car
only Hunk and Lance can start her. everyone else has tried but they can’t figure out how lance and hunk do it.
Group belief is that Blue runs on magic
Has a “My child is an Honor Student” bumper sticker and he loves it. Cue group inside joke about Hunk and Lance being proud parents of their Honor Student child Pidge.
Once tried taking Keith on a romantic date out to the woods but Blue got stuck in the trail bc Lance kept forgetting to replace his bald ass tires
Hunk had to go get them and gave Lance a lecture about it
they still had a nice time though just sitting on Blue’s hood
Hunk
Ok so he’s a mechanic right? Hunk runs a small shop where he buys cheap cars people can’t fix, fixes them, and sells them for profit but he really excels at restoration
Drives a pastel yellow Ford F100 from the 50′s called Butter
She’s actually a F250 under the hood but shhhhhh
the only thing original on this babe is the body, which Hunk routinely checks for rust or damage
There’s usually car parts, wood, or other random things in the bed bc Hunk also does construction on the side but if you wanna go star gaze, Butter is the best
Hunk will make a nest and it’s routine for everyone to just fall asleep in there watching the stars
Hasn’t done anything crazy in Butter bc she’s an antique and he is Responsible™
Like Keith he will spend hours buffing out any scratches and while he won’t completely loose it over bigger damages he will cry and be morose until he repairs it
However, if you put your feet on the dash he will break-check your ass, DON’T. DO. IT.
No eating in his car either
in fact don’t even be dirty in his car ok
Hates driving in winter bc the salt they put on the roads is terrible for cars and he feels her pain so he usually goes places with Lance or waits for the Weekend Costco Trip with Shiro
Is a good one to call if you get stuck bc this babe can pullout anything
Puts the reindeer antlers on his car for christmas
Puts flower bouquets in the grill for summer
Pidge
has two vehicles: a little lime green Vespa for summer and a deep green 2005 Prius for winter
hasn’t really named her vehicles and just refers to them as the Vespa and the Prius
she does love them though, like they are always clean and shiny
Got the Prius for her 18th birthday and she saved up for the Vespa bc she wanted to be that person who goes to Famer’s Market wearing a big straw hat and nice sun dress on a scooter
she’s adorable
shows up at Shiro’s, “I’m here to pick up a fossil” “Pidge I’m 25.” “Yeah, he’s got white hair and 4 children”
shows up and Lance and Hunk’s place, “Get in nerds, we’re going shopping”
sees Keith out on the street while on her Vespa. Challenges him to a race. Keith let her win once and it was all she could talk about for weeks bc she was so proud of her Vespa
modified the horn of her Prius to a semi-truck honk and uses it only for evil
there’s always soil in the back of the Prius bc she uses it to visit the nursery and just never cleans it
smells like earth in it as a result and it’s actually super peaceful
Gives everyone shit about their gas mileage bc she gets like 40+ to the gallon

Stormy is my very best friend. She is my second daughters namesake. She is the owner of the brightest smile I’ve ever seen. We’ve known each other our entire lives, and her father and my mother were room mates/best friends long before we came along. We’ve grown up together, and she’s one of the best people I know. She’s adventurous, brave, artistic and so so loving. She has incredible ideas, she wants the best for everyone and she is beautiful inside and out. I could actually go on about her forever, but instead I’ll let you read our interview:
Find Stormy on Instagram here. Read her blog here.
You’ve traveled all over, what’s your favourite thing about travelling? My all time favourite thing about travelling is meeting new people. I like how when you’re travelling everything seems to be amplified. You meet so many genuine souls and develop friendships over a few days but sometimes those friendships last forever. I find that I meet these people in towns where there are lots of travellers, even if I’m not specifically travelling overseas. I’ve met some gems while living at Big White Ski Resort and in Whistler. In environments like this people seem so much more open and willing to meet new people. I guess it’s because lots of people are constantly moving to those areas looking for the same experiences.
I mean, I love seeing all the different scenery but it’s really the people, when I think about my South East Asia Trip, I remember the people of those countries being some of the happiest people i’ve met despite having so much less than we have up here. Same with the people in Colombia, everyone was so friendly! I’m kicking myself for not knowing Spanish. I love to learn about the area but my all time favourite thing is learning about people’s individual histories.
Ohh and I love how everything is always changing. The people, the culture, the landscape and the things you do! One day you can be hiking, the next day you can be chilling on the beach, the next day horseback riding by day and flying to a city for some good ol cocktails and bar hopping by night! I’m not a planner so I just go with the flow and it’s nice this way. What better way to grow than wake up and see or do something new everyday!
It can be scary for females to travel alone. Any advice for other women who want to get into travelling around the world? To be honest, I haven’t really traveled alone. I mean, I did an exchange semester over in Australia but that was different, because I had pre-arranged a place to live and knew i’d meet other students. However, that being said I’ve travelled to some third world countries with a friend and I would say it’s definitely possible to go on your own. The key is to stay in a popular hostel in the beginning, because once you’re in there, you’ll meet other people just like you looking for travel partners. I say popular because if you go during the less busy season there is a chance if you choose a less popular hostel you might end up being the only one at it. This happened to me and my friend in Southeast Asia and then again to me and another friend in Colombia. Anyway after the first few days in the hostel you will meet friends and you won’t have to travel alone unless you decide you want to. When me and my friend went to South America, we made friends with two girls on separate occasions who were travelling alone so they just joined along with us when we met!
If this seems too scary still, I’d recommend doing something my little sister did. She applied to work as a volunteer abroad. This way when you arrive you will meet a bunch of other like-minded people who will most likely be up to travelling around with you after your volunteering stint ends. Plus your accommodation will already be organized. This is how my sister met her now boyfriend -they’ve been together for two years now :).
If you’re going someplace where English isn’t the first language, I’d highly recommend learning the basics of the most popular language there. I’d also recommend carrying around one of those Lonely Planet Phrase books for the area you are in, having a translator on your phone, and downloading a map. Get better at reading directions. Also, depending on what country you are in, picking up a pre-paid SIM card from the area is always handy and you’ll feel much safer having access to a phone and data.
If volunteering isn’t your thing and you like a little bit more of a set plan, I’d consider doing a Contiki tour. Contiki’s are a little on the pricier side but then you know ahead of time what the plan is and everything is figured out for you. You just have to show up! My friend did this and found people to travel around Europe with once the Contiki was over. It’s a good place to start! They do Contiki tours all over the world!
Ohhhh and if you have dietary requirements like I did, I heard of the smartest thing to do for it. This girl when arriving in Thailand got her food allergies written on her forearm in henna. My life would have been so much easier if I had done this when I was in South America. My Spanish pronunciation is very bad, I struggled trying to tell them that I was vegan and gluten-free. No meat, no cheese, no milk, no flour from wheat….sometimes they looked at me like I was a lunatic.
Whats one of the best things you’ve done in a different country? Oooooooo I think one of my favourite things was doing this three day trek in Chiang Mai, Thailand. We stumbled upon it randomly. Our hostel owner put it on through his hostel so it was not one of the heavily advertised tours in the area. We ended up at that hostel because someone ushered us off the street telling us to stay there. They set us up with packs for the three days and we set off. I was extremely unfit at this time as well as my friend, we were always at the back, and we were chugging back Redbulls like no other, apparently they are stronger over there. Anyway we trekked up to this shelter that the village people from the area use to sleep in while they work in the rice patties. These rice patties/villages are literally in what feels like the middle of nowhere in the jungle. The village is super small, it only consists of a few families and their farm animals that roam free and a lot of little dogs. Throughout the trek we learned about the plants and spiders in the area. I faced my spider fear and held my first spider, from that moment I became way less afraid of spiders, but the little ones I still find icky. We helped gather food from the forest to make dinner. We made our own sling shots, I think I still have mine! We camped our first night in this little shelter and ate our dinner scavenged from the forest along with a couple things that our guide had brought. We drank beers which the village people brought into the jungle specifically to sell to us tourists and headed to sleep on these mats on the floor in the shelters. Ohhhhh and we set out rat traps. My dad told me if I ate a rat he’d give me like $500 so I was really hoping that one of us would catch one, unfortunately no one did- I really could have used that $500. This was before my vegan days! Ohhh and I ate a snake, that my friend caught in the bush. I also learned how to knock rice out of the rice plant – it’s hard work, I don’t know how they do it all day long. Yet again, I was supremely out of shape. The next day we trekked into the village and had dinner with the family that lived there, they were the cutest happiest old people ever. There was no electricity or hot water, just cold bucket showers and they slept on the floor on these little mats. I kid you not, they were the happiest smiliest people i’ve ever met. There’s something to be said for living that simple life.
We had beers and a campfire with the group, there were about 10 of us. Our hostel owner only lets us go in small groups. It was a stellar night full of chit chat, sing-a-longs and smiles. The next day we trekked our way out of the village, yet another struggle especially for me and my slow friend.
Our guide was amazing. She grew up in one of these kinds of villages and moved into the city to explore and make money. She spoke english really well. She’s had a taste of both lifestyles and she seemed to miss the simple life sometimes, but she gets a nice balance of it with the tours. She definitely made the trip- I still have her on facebook 🙂
So this is one of those things we never would have done if we had planned our trip out. We just heard about it from our random hostel and hopped on board. If you let it, the universe will often lead you somewhere awesome.
If you could only recommend one place to others for travel, where would it be? Mmmm this is a tough one, but quite honestly I’d say Canada. Canada is a good place for all ages and English is the first language so it’s easy to get around. I’m talking about BC and Alberta more specifically as I haven’t been further so I cannot comment much but I feel that Montreal and the East Coast would be unreal places to visit as well. If you’re sight seeing there’s plenty of beautiful landscapes to see. If you like exploring little towns they are everywhere. If you like nightlife, you can stop in Vancouver, Whistler or Calgary, or even hit up a little local pub in one of those tiny towns or ski resorts on a weekend night. If you like hiking, kayaking, rock climbing, there’s plenty of places to go. If surfing is your thing, Vancouver Island has you covered. If you like camping in remote areas you can strap on your backpack and hike out into the wilderness. If you like camping but prefer to be in the closeness of others there’s plenty of popular campsites where you’ll feel at ease. Every little town has its own little community culture and I always look forward to meeting locals in the area and checking out all the little local shops. It’s a neat way to see what the community is into.
Think of all the waterfalls, hot springs, and glorious views you can see. All you need is a car, a road trip buddy and a little bit of camping gear.
What are your greatest strengths? What’s your biggest weakness? Ohhh this is a hard one. I’d’ say my biggest strength in life is that I am good at vibing with other people. It’s rare that I don’t’ get on well with others. I have a keen eye for understanding other people’s personalities and how to interact with them. I’m also pretty outgoing but I wasn’t always this way. Back in highschool and even up to third year of uni, I’d consider myself a little bit shy until I was in a more intimate setting. I rarely spoke to people I hadn’t already become good friends with and in a group setting I’d just sit back and listen. My face blushed feverishly anytime a boy or someone new or someone (boy or girl) unexpectedly spoke to me. This slowly changed as I traveled, had a stint as a telemarketer and briefly became one of those people in the mall that tries to sell you something when you walk by. As much as I hated the latter two, they helped me be really outgoing. Now I have no problems striking up conversations with people at the traffic light, in the grocery store line, and beyond. I suppose the last few years i’ve spent working as a waitress have improved this as well.
I feel I have two equally as big weaknesses. I have a really hard time articulating myself and a really hard time staying on topic which makes me come off as entertaining but also makes it hard to grasp what the hell i’m talking about at any given time. I have a tendency to learn something new and memorize the point of it but I never can remember the supporting facts so when I try to tell someone about it or explain it, I don’t know how to, all I know is that I read something and this is what I know now. I also jump from topic to topic in conversation and in life, which makes it hard for others to follow me along in a conversation. It also makes it hard for me to get anything done, I start something, it reminds me of something else, I move on to something else, and then back and then something else again. Like I can’t even get through brushing my teeth, I’ll be making a cup of tea or trying to get dressed at the same time. Why can’t I just spend the extra 30 seconds and finish brushing my teeth, multitasking while brushing your teeth is not ever productive. Note from Paige: Can I just say that Stormy described ADHD so well within the weaknesses part of this question?! I need to copy and paste this to everyone I know.
Is there anything in life you regret? Mmmmmmm yes. I regret not pursuing something more artsy outside of highschool – like graphic design. Only now, looking back on me in highschool do I realize that I should have pursed something in the creative realm. My counsellor told me to do arts or science if I didn’t know what I wanted to do in university. I didn’t realize that arts was more than just English because my high school was so tiny we didn’t’ have sociology or anthropology or even psychology classes for that matter. Academically I did well in every class so I just picked science. One year into science I realized I didn’t know what I’d do for a job in science so I transfered into Business, it just seemed more practical, everything relates to business. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad I have my degree and the university lifestyle was a great experience but I wish I would have learned how to design stuff on the side, or painted photos, or just made some general time to do something creative instead of spending all time working, socializing or studying. It would have been nice to know about college courses or BCIT for graphic design but I just thought the next logical step was university- I needed more guidance. My all time favourite thing about high school was creating the year book and art class. Ohh and also french class projects because we always had to create something visual so I’d go all out with artistic flare. Arts and crafts were my go to activity in my youth as well- i’m lucky to have a ‘crafty dad’ who always had us making fun things.I also loved putting on events that brought about school spirit. I didn’t know all my options though, I wish someone could have provided with me more insight, but it’s hard in a smaller town especially when you don’t have older siblings or friends with older siblings to share their experience with you. It’s hard to even know what’s out there when you’ve been living your little sheltered life. I recommend taking a year off, travelling, meeting new people, you’ll learn tons about other jobs, and about yourself, and come back with a new perspective on what you want to do in your future.
Although I do regret not pursuing some sort of art the last 8 years, It’s okay, I realized it’s never too late to start again, I’m making time to be creative now. It’s never too late to start.
What are you passionate about? I would say I am most passionate about being happy and I think one of the main contributors to happiness is constantly working towards having good health which can be a battle. Having good health I believe has a lot to do with what you eat and thus I guess I am really passionate about food. Having good health makes you-feel good, and once you’re not dealing with fatigue, stomach problems and general lethargy then you’re able to focus on all other things that make you happy. Changing my diet has changed my life immensely, and now I can focus on adding other things to life that make me happy and healthy, like making art, coming up with new ideas, spending time outdoors and engaging conversations with good people (instead of struggling to keep my eyes open mid convo) and my all time favourite….creating delicious meals to eat. Hopefully I’ll make time for meditative time too.
What made you decide to go vegan? Mmm, I like to call myself plant-based instead of vegan because I ended up this way because of three things, my food intolerance, the fact that I’ve never really enjoyed eating meat and my best friend Tamsin. I don’t believe I know enough on the animal rights point of view to call myself vegan. I just tend to use this term because few people know what you’re on about if you say plant-based.
On my health journey, I realized that apart from being lactose intolerant, I had an egg intolerance, and my stomach would get upset from eating red meat, and later I realized this happened with chicken too. I never enjoyed eating meat growing up with the exception of pulled pork and fish. I never really knew any vegans until I met Tamsin though. I became plant-based at home for the first year, cheating on the occasion for scoops of ice cream, a bite of someones pizza or some fish. A few months after I moved in with Tamsin, I was like, I might as well try to go 100% and for some reason it stuck. Before meeting her, the idea kind of seemed unfathomable. I didn’t realize you could be healthy while eating plant-based and my naturopaths had put me on a paleo diet (paleos eat lots of meat). I remember trying to choke down all the pieces of my organic chicken when I was on that diet and being almost in tears, the pieces were so slimy and weird. I feel way better eating this way and it’s stopped me from eating a lot of junk food just because it’s in front of me – like donuts, and cakes, and chocolate peanut m&ms. I don’t even like chocolate peanut m&ms but I use to down them if they were there…and suffer later. I also quit gluten when I went vegan, I was gluten intolerant, but it was easier to give up eating that cookie because it had animal products in it and gluten then simply because I was allergic. Maybe it’s the subconscious feeling that you’re helping the greater good that allowed me to stay away?
What’s the best part of being vegan? What’s the worst part? The best part of being vegan is making my own food. I make so much more food now, it’s just easier that way and it’s so colorful. Like imagine the colors of my salad yesterday- green spring mix, shredded carrots, shredded beets, tomatoes, cucumbers, chickpeas, red cabbage, it’s like eating the rainbow ! It makes me so excited ! Smoothie bowls are my jam. I’m about to make one right after this. I get so excited to eat, and the best part is not having a belly ache afterwards and not thinking about how 5 chickens died for that plate of 20 wings. Yuck. Also, becoming plant-based has built up my will power immensely. You get a sense of accomplishment when you can successfully avoid something and it has made me feel like I can conquer so many things my previous indulgent patterns have stopped me from before.
Ohhh and I love sharing food with other people and how excited they get that it tastes good and it’s vegan (and generally gluten free if it’s coming from me).
The worst part is the annoying comments people make about you being plant-based. Or the need to point out their meaty food or how you must eat chicken for protein. I don’t want to look at your meaty food, it no longer looks like food to me. A bit dramatic, but I just think about it as flesh sitting around in my intestines struggling to get digested.
What’s the best thing you’ve ever eaten? Mmm there are way to many things. I’ve tried soo many delicious meals out in the last few months while travelling. This is the best smoothie bowl I had though- Raw Salted Caramel flavour with caramelized buckinis and lots of other goodies. Ohh and the best vegan pizza i’ve had is at Virtuous Pie in Vancouver. They actually have so many types of vegan cheese.
What makes you feel safe? I’ve never really thought about this. I haven’t felt unsafe in a long time. It generally only happens to me when I’m walking or running down a quiet neighbourhood in a regular city or town but I haven’t been living in situations like this. For some reason when you live in ski towns you have this sense that you are safe because there’s a bunch of people in your age range up and about all the time. Even if you don’t see them on your walk home, you know this, you don’t feel like there are malicious people out there. The overall town vibe just seems happy- at least in my head. So I guess being in these environments make me feel safe. I wouldn’t feel safe if I was walking through a regular town at dark for the same distance. Sometimes I even panic when I’m on a run in regular cities and towns in the daytime. Every time someone slows for a stop sign, I think oh no what if they’re kidnapping me. It’s weird, I don’t know where I got that habit. I think it’s starting to go away though. At least I hope so because I no longer live in a ski resort.
What do you want to be when you grow up? Are you headed in that direction? I just want to be me, and I want to make the world a better place. I want to make people be healthier and feel healthier. I want the generations below us to know what we are learning now about how what we put in our bodies affects us, I want them to learn about self-care and about how materialism doesn’t provide you much happiness but how helping others can be so fulfilling….. I wish I had known these things when I was younger but at least if we’re all learning this now, we can pass it onto our kids and hope it won’t be lost. I used to want to be a top shot business women or an actress so I’d have all the dollars and all the things. I then traveled abroad and came back wanting to use my money for experiences. I stopped spending all my dollars on clothes, and started saving for travel. I’ve traveled a bit now, and I feel I’m at a place where I’m okay with staying stationary and trying to figure out what I’m going to do when I grow up. I’ve ditched the shared rooms and hostel style living for the quiet comfort of my own room with a desk. Having a desk is literally the best. So i’m getting there, I’m figuring out, I have some business ideas with a vegan friend of mine, but they are only just ideas. We’ve got to take the risk, buckle down, and start our planning.
What was the last book you read? Would you recommend it? Oooooo the last book I read was actually a fictional book called Jasper Jones by Craig Silvey. It’s an Australian independent novel. I wanted to treat myself, I generally read non-fiction but they take me longer to read. I just wanted to have a story I could dive into and feel like I was watching a movie. Fictional books are really movies playing out in your head. I would recommend it, it’s about three teenagers, and a girl that dies. It’s told from the perspective of one of the teenagers, it’s kind of about him growing up and realizing the world isn’t what he thought it to be- it introduces him to the lies, stereotypes and racism issues that bubble under the surface of his little Australian town. It reminded me of when I was in my early teens and I’d watch movies where people cheat, lie and steal. I was like surely they make this all up for the movies….then I got older and was like oh my god this is actually like the world we live in….humanity inspired the movies.
What is your ultimate goal, personally and professionally? My ultimate goal personally is to have a lovely little home in a neighbourhood surrounded by many of my closest friends but to have a spare room or guest home so I can always have visitors. I want to live somewhere where vibes are good and the outdoors are easy to access and I want a little garden to feed my friends and family. I want to be a more balanced human and get things done instead of talking about things I want to do. I feel myself getting there, it’s just taking longer than I’d like.
Professionally, I’d like to start many small businesses. I want to say I want to own one business that helps create a healthier community and brings about a space for creativity. However I know that I’ll always want to start more businesses or have little side projects as time goes on! My brain doesn’t stick well to only one thing. So professionally, I’d like to work for myself, but I’d like my work to be meaningful. Not just a means to a paycheck but a means to a better place.
Wild Women: Stormy Stormy is my very best friend. She is my second daughters namesake. She is the owner of the brightest smile I've ever seen.
