I keep forgetting the target demographic of miraculous is kids and it's like 10 years old now so a lot of you are younger than me. It's so crazy. I'm supposed to be graduating college in like a few months.

So anyways, I just wanted to say that life gets better than highschool and all the bad times you have now will be a distant memory in the future. Keep working hard and what you love and keep loving yourself. Be honest with others, spread kindness wherever and whenever you can. Fake it till you make it. If you want to be a better person pretend you are. The world is a beautiful place and there's so many Wonderful people in it. Don't let a few discredit the rest. Hii!! I just found your blog and your art is rlly nice! If I can ask,how do you deal with motivation and art block? (Speaking as someone who is STRUGGLING rn lmao)

hey, thank you very much! lemme see if I can type out something useful. here are a few things that have helped me:

making art part of my routine. the motivation question is difficult - it's hard to overcome the inertia of sitting on the couch, the lure of the internet, etc - and so I try to set aside a particular time of day to work on art. so it's not "hmmmm do I feel like working on art rn?" it's "ah, it's [x] time, so now I will go draw". sometimes it doesn't quite work out, but it helps to have this dedicated hour.

keeping my art supplies readily available. this may be hard to do if space is an issue but I find sometimes if I put away my hobby supplies out of sight, I forget all about them lol

try to find/organize some regular meetup (irl or virtual) to do some drawing from life/reference, like figure drawing, a plein air meetup, a still life club, etc. it's good practice to draw from life, but more relevantly for your question re art block/motivation: a) it provides a regularly-scheduled Time For Art b) it narrows down the question of "what should I draw" - you just draw the person/object/tree/whatever right in front of you! and also it's nice to hang out with other art people :)

related to the above, there are some websites (eg line of action) that provide free references for figure drawing, animals, etc. they're timed, so if all you have is 15 minutes and no ideas, then hey, you can still do three 5 minute sketches!

try a different medium/style than what you currently use. don't worry about quality, just play around with it! have some fun :^)

add some enrichment to your enclosure. check out an art gallery, go on a walk in a park you haven't been to before, see a play, read a new book, play a game, have dinner with loved ones, etc etc etc. I don't know what inspires you, but sometimes when I feel uninspired it's actually because I haven't gone outside or done anything fun in a few days and my brain is turning into sludge ._.

lastly, if nothing seems to be working, it's fine to let a hobby go for a little while. if you're getting no joy out of it (and it's not something you have to do eg for your education/career), you don't have to force yourself to draw. you can always come back to it when you're ready.

also, all this assumes the struggle is art-specific. if you feel unmotivated/uninterested in your hobbies in general that may be a mental health issue, in which case you should get advice from a medical professional and not me!

Today's food from the Neopets Cookbook was....

Space quesadilla!

Yknow at first I wasn't sure why this item was 11k neopoints but after making it I kind of understand lmao it's a little tedious. But it got me thinking back that 20 years ago I would not have been able to afford this food item in the game comfortably haha.

Started off with some onions and beans! You gotta cook the onions for a bit, then add the seasoning, then the beans.

Then you have to mash this whole thing in a "chunky purée"

I wouldn't exactly call this a purée, but I worked with it lmao. I'm not sure if it's meant to be softer than this or not but it worked out! Also to be fair I keep forgetting to buy a potato masher and had to make do.

Now it's time for assembly! A layer of the bean paste, and then a generous amount of cheese. In hindsight I shoulda put more cheese. But also at this point I'm very hungry and want to eat this thing.

The next step is to cut them into stars. This is a messy process and leaves you with a lot of extra cuttings. The cookbook suggest just cooking and eating them on the side, which yeah fair! But it does make a mess lol. The stars are very cute, but I probably wouldn't bother with it if I was gonna make this again haha. Would be fun for a party though!

All that's left is to garnish with pico de gallo! I omitted the cilantro in mine bc I hate cilantro and i know it likely changed the flavor but I don't care. Apologies for the messy presentation but I was hungry and also on the clock lmao. I may or may not have eaten one already. Also I suck ass at flipping stuff in pans sdfsg.

They tasted alright! There's a few things I would change from my first attempt (and I did do with the second batch): First I would put more seasoning in the bean paste. The two teaspoons of cumin kinda disappeared in all the beans. I think I could've used more lime juice too! Or just more salt.

Second I would use a mix of cheese. The cookbook suggest using cheddar or swiss (or a mix of both). I went with swiss for funsies but swiss alone was a little bland. In the second batch I added some cheddar and it was much better. And some green onions bc green onions are always good.

So this was neat! The taste was nothing to write home about but that's easily fixed I think, my second batch was much better. I think my pan got a bit too hot at the end too lol. Aside from the mess it was really easy to make though and cutting it into quarters was much faster and slightly less messy. But for a party or simply enclosure enrichment sometimes cutting your food into stars is just fun.

HEY I have a hermit crab (he's like 6-7 at this point so not a recent acquisition) and I'm always trying to think of things for him to do or play with because he’s awesome and I love him. Any ideas?

ANON THATS SO COOL! hermit crabs are awesome, and huge props to you keeping your little guy’s enrichment in mind!!! i have seen some people put larger hermits or other crabs (like fiddlers) in hamster balls for short periods of time in order to let them explore in relative safety…. i would go for one of the larger ones and keep a close eye on him but that could be fun!!

variety in diet is also a big thing people will do for their hermits. when i worked at a pet store, i used to love giving ours fresh chopped veggies fruit and nuts — but they can eat all sorts of additional things too! food items that won’t spoil right away (like dried fish or dried fruit) can be sprinkled around the enclosure or ‘hidden’ to give him a chance to put those foraging skills to good use. stuff like sterilized dry leaf litter (catappa/indian almond leaves are usually sold for fish or reptile setups, but they work good for these guys too! i’d just make sure to go for stuff intended for pets) or even live plants can make for good edible enrichment too! (i’d be very careful to make sure everything you use is safe for him to eat - i’ve seen people grow wheatgrass or other ‘cat grasses’ for anything from hamsters to birds to crabs so that might be a decent option. you could also look into what sort of leafy greens people find their hermits tend to like, and consider growing some sprouts for him!!)

they’re also avid climbers, so something like pieces of sturdy driftwood or cholla wood or even one of those rope climbing nets people will use for lizards could be fun — if it’s the latter, i’d just make sure it’s very tightly secured and that the substrate is thick + soft enough that if he does fall, he won’t hurt himself too much. don’t want any shell damage.

one thing i always love to do for enrichment with the various inverts i’ve kept over the years is actually one of the easiest things to do — just rearrange their tank every so often! turn around or flip over bits of rock or wood, switch out fake plants for some new ones, change the location of the food or water dishes, all kinds of stuff like that to keep their brain moving and keep them exploring!! it’s something we do for animals at work too, it’s a great way to provide novel stimuli without having to go too crazy.

i’ve honestly never had a hermit crab myself (i love em to death, but they usually like to have as much space as possible and i’m heavily limited for space rn. that and i’m hardly ever home lmao) so i’m just pulling from my general invert/aquatic crustacean knowledge, so take that with a few grains of salt. best of luck in your crabby enrichment endeavors though!!

Okay so the rest of the chapter was also very good. I’ll start with the cafeteria. Tommy only got told he would get to run the next when it was very late, he left very early. He only took the time to wake up and tell Wilbur. He did not tell Tubbo, because Tubbo doesn’t seem to know where Tommy is. And he’s instantly worried and suspicious of Wilbur. But it has to sting know that Tommy didn’t tell you he was going on a run. That has to be a sign of how badly Tubbo fucked up. He’s being very paranoid and stressed still. Aimsey even says so.

You know maybe I should have started with why Wilbur went to the cafeteria in the first place. Distractions! A big theme for glass!Wilbur. Or your Wilbur’s in general. Tbf, there’s not a lot he can do in this situation. All he can do is wait. So healthy distractions it is. And I say healthy cuz it’s not alcohol this time. In fact it is social interaction with new people. There are a lot of benefits to Tommy not being there even if it resulted in what I can only assume is going to be a trainwreck.

The lack of Tommy befinits include: Niki and Wilbur interactions. Wilbur wanting to go to the cafeteria. Aimsey coming over and wanting to sit with them. Wilbur being allowed to decide whether or not they can stay (though I think Tommy would let Wilbur decide for himself too, Aimsey was against killing Wilbur after all). The nice fear about death conversation and Aimsey comforting Wilbur. The general getting on the same page and clearing up misconceptions based on prejudice.

What I mean by that is that Wilbur assumes none of the Deathlinhs are anxious because they are used to this. But Niki is still anxious. They are all still afraid their friends might not come back. So there’s some comfort for Wilbur there. And of course he requires a different form of comfort. The thought that Lady Deafth is waiting on the other side of no comfort to him. Not only because she’s not his goddess (and I think he’s still kind of scared or put off by her) but he only just got a friend, he does not want to lose him. So then Aimsey switches tactics by pointing out that Tommy’s tattoos aren’t just proof of his recklessness, they are proof of his skill. And that does the trick.

oh yeah tubbo was very shocked and hurt to learn that tommy went on a run without telling him. it really shows just how badly their relationship was damaged by the whole "we should kill the pythia" debate and how far tommy is willing to let his own stubbornness go.

going to the cafeteria was a very healthy distraction so props to him!! not alcohol this time yay!! and he gets to interact with way more people this time. healthy behaviors for him! it's like enriching a tiger in a zoo enclosure he's gotta get proper stimulation lmao

I also wanted to use tommy's absence to show how unhealthy their dynamic is becoming. because without tommy around, yes, wilbur is very anxious. but he can still interact with people and it forces him to make decisions and not just keep most of his focus on the person he's most comfortable with. pushing boundaries can be very helpful and that's what a lot of this chapter was. wilbur being in a position where he has to push his boundaries, but he has control of how far he wants to push them.

yeahhh the lady death angle wasn't gonna work to comfort him, so aimsey's topic switch to the tattoos was very necessary

how did you decide what types of snakes to get? do reptiles need enrichment like dogs?

my first snake, who i got in middle school and died recently, was a corn snake. i got her because corn snakes are easy to take care of. i went for a bp after because they have rlly cool color morphs. i got a mbk finally because i think theyre neat and i was very tired of dealing with Ball Python Bullshit (tm).

 decide what reptile to get based on what you can handle--reptiles need specialized care in ways that dogs or cats dont. i very much enjoy my uromastyx lizards (more than i enjoy my snakes care, but i still love my snakes regardless) and have no plans to get any other reptile any time soon.

for the second question.....anon u have opened up a can of worms that i think u dont realize how deeply engrained and fought over it is. short answer tho? YES. reptiles need enrichment just as any other animal on this planet. 

again gonna put this under a read more bc it will probably get long

the much longer & more complicated answer is that the reptile hobby is full of money and that money drives interactions. ball pythons, especially, are a very lucrative business that spans potentially millions, if not billions of dollars. reptiles are bred for color--full stop. ive met maybe three breeders that somewhat look at temperament in breeding. a more colorful or rare morph means more money. you also have to think of it this way--adding enrichment costs money. providing big enclosures? costs money and space. 

you can’t have a multi-million dollar business if you give your reptiles proper care--it’s too much time, money, and effort for these people. that’s why if you go onto ball python groups, its incredibly common to see people deny that ball pythons need enrichment. despite the fact that there are several studies out there showing that reptiles do have an increased quality of life, it just doesnt matter to these people.

these are the same people who will breed and sell animals with known neurological issues VERY CLEARLY linked to their color morph so like, not the best people.

i very distinctly remember getting into a facebook argument like four years ago in a ball python group. these people will literally twist any words you have. the most common argument when linking those studies was “well, OTHER reptiles need enrichment but BALL PYTHONS dont because theyre pet rocks”. it’s a huge part of the reason that im just...not in the reptile hobby anymore. i breed for myself and what im looking for. i also dont touch ball pythons lmao

animal rights is basically what pe/ta stands for-- its an emotion-based approach to human/animal interaction that ends up ultimately harming the animals it claims to protect and usually this also intersects with opinions that are racist ableist etc. this ranges from claiming that there is NO ethically or sustainably responsible way to eat meat (vegan diets aee extremely unethical and unsustainable actually lol but nobody ever talks about that) to claiming that humans shouldnt interact with animals at ALL and we should all release our domesticated pets into the wild (WHICH IS A TERRIBLE IDEA)

animal welfare on the other hand is science based. it focuses on what has been empirically shown to be the best option for both people and animals. this can be things like keeping your cats indoors to protect native bird populations and prevent your cat from often tragic injuries or death, and providing your cat with proper enrichment while it is indoors. animal welfare is accredited zoos with state-of-the-art enclosures and enrichment for their animals raising money and awareness for conservation causes.

the rise of the internet has seen a HUUUGE increase in misinformation regarding animals and its important to me that people know that i dont support or put up with that bullshit lmao

little rain cloud of a human being winchester would be having the time of his life. he would SLEEP for DAYS and wake up REFRESHED. he would only leave because [REDACTED]. his siblings however would all fold in the first day. dallas might make it to the next morning if there were enough enrichment in the enclosure. but they run on social stimuli in different ways and don't do so hot when cut off from the supply.

astoria obviously hates her mother with fervor. jericho despises astoria as is his duty. dallas incidentally also hates his mother but tbh astoria is tied. winchester doesn't have room in his heart for negativity but if he had to pick someone damn it's astoria.

ohhhhhhhohoho the kids are not alright. ok so astoria is incredibly competent and she's not shy about it. she has no sympathy for incompetence and has unfortunately never learned the lesson that some things cannot be had simply because you want them bad enough. in her defense she has successfully fulfilled every goal she's ever set for herself via various means, including but not limited to: extortion, 15% concentrated power of will, malicious opportunism, and murder (allegedly). jericho's greatest pride is himself. everything from his pedigree (which was handed to him) to his career path (which was handed to him) and even the very property he owns (which was handed to him). jericho gets what he wants because it's what he deserves and he has very little left to prove so please don't go prying into his psyche, for the love of god. how rude. dear lovely dallas prides himself on his knack for social finessing. he's never met a situation he couldn't talk himself out of. his charisma stat is off the charts. he's never had need for anything because he always has a buddy or knows a guy who can hook him up and if he doesn't he will find someone. things are so simple if you just ask. flipside is that this gets him into just as much trouble as it gets him out. so. really it's a tossup but the odds are usually in his favor (citation needed). and lastly winchester, for all his empathy and moral high ground, is actually a little full of himself. he looks down on his family but to be fair he is right in some regards. might be a bit difficult to stand high when the view requires cutting your roots. we'll see.

Okayso. Zoo Tycoon 2 was the only ~tycoon~ game I ever played before this new one, so I’ll just compare the two of them. 

Zoo Tycoon 2 was like... perfect amazing ingenious wonderful so much fun. I only ever played it in the ~unlimited budget~ mode bc I was like 10 and didn’t want to have to use my Brain lmfao. But anyway, the player basically had 100% control over everything. You could design all your own animal enclosures. Like, you choose what kind of fence to use, you choose what shape the enclosure will be, how big... you could even manipulate the terrain and make hills, ditches, cliffs, different ground levels, ponds, rivers, and waterfalls. You could “paint” the biomes/habitats onto the ground and choose from different textures like rocky, sandy, grassy, water, etc. When decorating the enclosures with stuff like trees and plants and rocks and statues, you could put them wherever you wanted, and use as many as you wanted.

In regards to the actual animals, you could put those wherever you wanted, too, including in places where they weren’t supposed to be lmao. Like, you did not have to put animals inside enclosures. You could let them run around and chase zoo guests if you wanted. :P Also, you could pick up zoo guests and put them inside with the animals. It was fucking funny! You could also put prey animals in with predator animals, and the predators would attack and kill and eat them (which really just meant that the predator animal, say, a lion, would just swipe his paw at a gazelle and then the gazelle would suddenly turn into a carcass lmao.)

Now, this new shit doesn’t let you do ANNNNYYYYY OF THAT!!! 

The game basically makes all creative decisions FOR you while simultaneously having what’s probably the worst user interface that I’ve ever seen. 

Firstly, you have basically no control over what the enclosures look like. You can only select from a handful of pre-made enclosures, and you basically just stamp them down where you want them to go. Like. A literal stamp. There are three different enclosure sizes to choose from: ~Large, medium, and small~. They all have the exact same shape. If you want to place things like restrooms or food kiosks or entertainment areas, those work the same way, too; you just stamp it the fuck down, complete with footpaths that surround the area.

You also have no real control over where the footpaths go. When you place an enclosure or restroom/food kiosk/etc, it pretty much automatically decides where the paths are gonna connect it to the rest of the zoo. This results in there being a LOT of wasted space throughout the zoo, since the game won’t allow you to place things in the most efficient areas. 

And perhaps the thing that pissed me off the most was that when it comes to decorating the enclosures.... you basically CAN’T. Everything that you can place in the enclosures, including food stations, bathing stations, shelters, enrichment activities, decorations, etc, can only go in a handful of PRE-DETERMINED LOCATIONS. And once those locations are used up, you can’t put anything else inside! 

Basically the entire game (in unlimited mode, at least) is just... going around the zoo and picking up poop, refilling food and water stations, and repairing broken restaurants and bathrooms. 

It’s. 

Awful and zero fun at all.  

Literally the only good thing about it is the graphics and whatnot. All the animals are pretty to look at.

His character quite literally changed the story and they just like chuck were willing to let him stay just to see where he'd take things (plus the viewers fell in love with him on sight)

But everytime he was killed off cos they HATE him the viewers and Dean!!! Stopped functioning = stopped watching

Cas isn't supposed to come back?? Views literally tank. Dean literally falls apart no enrichment in the enclosure makes dean a heartbroken boy

So the stuff I said before applies to the company itself too

Because they really fucked us AND cas over in the worst of ways with this finale and we made sure they knew it
