What your favorite SU character says about you but it's just mean as fuck
Steven ā How is being a mentally ill, people-pleasing queer going for you? Did your mommy issues and anxiety resolve themselves yet or are you still avoiding therapy?
You either disliked or were neutral about him until he got a neck. You think Future is peak cinema (correct) and can't understand why everyone else hates it. You have a better grasp on this show's characters and themes than most of the people who watched it.
Connie ā You were likely the gifted kid in school but a total burn-out now. You either see a lot of yourself in this character (How are those helicopter parents of yours doing? Have you gone no-contact yet?) or you're a normie and boring to sandbox with. Probably both.
You've got a lot of Feelingsā¢ļøabout her and if people don't agree it causes Problemsā¢ļø. In case no one has told you yet, stop caring what other people think. Your constant virtue signaling to appeal to other normies is a crutch that's just holding you back. It's okay to have fun!!
Stevonnie ā You want to fuck this character, though you'd never say that out loud. You like Steven and Connie; maybe you like one more than the other, but you like both at least a little. If you're using them for shipping you're the only person in the entire fandom doing whatever hyper-specific ship you've latched onto.
Rose and or Pink ā You really suck as a person! Or you used to suck but you've gotten a lot better and we stan! If you're the former you almost certainly have terrible takes on this show (but not in the way people might think), sorry, I donāt make the rules. Either way, you gotta stop finding ways to bring her back, dawg. She's gone.
Greg ā You're a man (positive) and gay as hell. Gentleman on the streets and a fucking freak in the sheets. We stan. Pop off king <3
Garnet ā If you headcanon her as acespec she is not actually your favorite, Ruby and Sapphire are your favorite, but you like them both equally so you just say you like Garnet. If you headcanon her as anything else you're definitely shipping her with one of the other gems, probably Pearl or Jasper.
Amethyst ā Super chill person. Would be in most people's dream blunt rotation. You're a live and let live kinda guy and I respect that, but you also have no hills you'd die on so you're not the first person anyone goes to if they need serious support. You can get away with misinterpreting this character (on purpose or accidentally) because it's hard to say things about her that most people won't just shrug at and go "yeah that sounds right I guess"
Pearl ā You're annoying as hell. You see yourself in this character and that's not a good thing. Your social media presence gives off the same energy as every white woman's Instagram profile. If being a victim was a contest you'd take home the gold.
You think everyone is out to get you. They're not.
You think you're being persecuted. You're not.
Most people who see you from a distance and don't know better think you're alright, so you're probably pretty well-liked in public. The only people you will get along with in close quarters are all walking mean lesbian stereotypes.
Peridot ā You're annoying as hell for a different reason. You see yourself in this character too and that is a terrible, terrible thing.
She's your pfp on every website and app that will allow it. Your lifeblood is this fucking character and e v e r y o n e will know it. You're weirdly possessive of her and the hyper specific headcanons you made for her (even if you don't say that) despite every grass-fearing autistic person on the internet projecting onto her, so ironically you don't like other Peridot fans, which always ends up with you sitting alone even on websites with millions of people on them.
90% chance you're a furry, otherkin, therian or think you have DID. You think you're misunderstood, and in some ways you are, but the reality is most people don't speak dog and don't have the time or energy to learn. You need to go outside and learn to speak cat whether you want to or not
Lapis ā You don't like Peridot fans or kinnies, which is weirdly in-character. You're the biggest hater but you don't hide it and I can respect that. You think Lapis is a victim, but you're only half right. You would probably fall for propaganda if it was dressed up fancy enough.
Jasper ā You want to fuck this character, full stop. There's a 50/50 chance you're chill af or the most insufferable person on the planet. If you're the former you're friends with a lot of people. You float easily from one group to another, but a jack of all trades is a master of none, and you're no one's first pick if they're looking for someone close. You probably hate Lapis and her fans but you should really just let that shit go ngl
Spinel ā You need therapy (derogatory) and you're making that everyone else's problem. Despite the clown aesthetic you're not very funny to be around and you should get a better sense of humor. You project onto this character way too hard and it shows in your fandom habits and headcanons, but most of the time that's fine
Like Spinel, you're a little two-faced. Some people pick up on that right away and some don't. The people who do hold you at arms length until you make it clear which clown you'd rather be. You hate it when people ship Spinel with any character besides your favorite pairing, but you'll never say that out loud unless it's a ship the people you're talking to don't like.
Blue Diamond ā You're a man (derogatory) or a minor who doesn't actually understand anything about this character yet, and would immediately fall for any and all forms of propaganda
Yellow Diamond ā If you think she is wearing a helmet you're a man (derogatory) and you expected things out of SU that were never gonna happen. If you think it's just hair you have a much better grasp on this character than 90% percent of SU's fandom and I'm platonically kissing you on the mouth.
White Diamond ā You're a man (derogatory) or an incredibly based and sexy queer.
The Zircons ā You like Ace Attorney, or would like it if you haven't played it yet. You're making them kiss sloppy style. UwU
Lars ā You probably didn't like him until after he died. You will defend this boy with your fucking life. Also you should justā¦. go watch Star Trek if you haven't. Seriously what are you doingā
Sadie ā You're an oddball. Very lax though. You have complicated feelings about Shep
Peedee ā You're a little quirky, a little freaky, but you're too scared to just say that. You desperately need some fun in your life, but the people around you make that difficult. Eventually you'll find the folks that are worth hanging around. See you on the flip side :)
Ronaldo ā You're the type of person this character is based on and you take it in stride. If you're shipping him with Lars, you're the only person who's opinion on this character matters.
Kevin ā I dunno who hurt you but you have a terrible taste in men. You only have fun in bed if it involves a damn near human rights violation
Mayor Dewey ā You're normalbirb
Any other townie ā This is a trick question! No one has these as their favorite lmao
#hi this post is not serious#i am. putting myself and my friends on blast mostly LMAO#if u come in here talkin about 'oh no i like that townie' im stealing your left sock#steven universe#nugget rambles#text.txt#long post

When the villain is a philosophy
When you think of the word antagonist, the first thing that comes to mind is a villain. This is completely natural, given that stories of good vs evil tend to follow a heroic protagonist fighting against an evil antagonist. But once you get into the definition of the word, a person who actively opposes or is hostile to someone or something, moral alignment doesnāt dictate whether a character should be a protagonist or an antagonist. The most recognizable examples of this would be the likes of Invader Zim and Megamind, characters that are villainous in nature but are still the protagonists of their respective stories.
But villain protagonists and hero antagonists arenāt what Iām talking about here. Iām talking about the antagonists that arenāt entirely focused on, at least in the traditional sense. Antagonists that, despite being the source of conflict in the narrative, donāt actually show up a lot of the time. These antagonists, while characters in their own right, are more symbolic in nature. The protagonists of these stories arenāt just trying to defeat the antagonists, but the rotten philosophies that these antagonists have. The beliefs that push the antagonists to do their villainous acts.
White Diamond: Uniformity and the Status Quo

In the entirety of the original Steven Universe series, not counting the movie or SU Future, White Diamond appears in three episodes out of one hundred and sixty episodes. (Two if we donāt count White Pearl/Volleyball) Thatās not even one percent of the series. In most series involving a good vs evil plot line, we usually switch perspectives between our heroes and villains to understand how theyāre reacting to the events of the story. But SU is entirely told from Stevenās perspective. The audience only gets new information about gems, homeworld, Rose Quartz, etcetera, when Steven himself learns it. Because of this perspective, we donāt see the final antagonist of the series until the very end of the show.
But even though White Diamond is not present throughout the majority of the show, her homeworld subordinates and beliefs fill in the place of the hurdles that the protagonists must pass. Think about what the show is about and what lessons it teaches. Relationships are intricate and need mutual respect, being proud of who and what you are, and (most importantly) societal roles do not define you. The development of the main characters each involve acceptance of the self and bucking of whatās expected of them. Pearl fully moving on from Rose, Garnet improving her self-love, Amethyst fully accepting herself for what she is, Peridotās disillusionment with Homeworld and growing appreciation for earth, Connie disobeying her motherās strict rules, Steven slowly becoming someone better than even his own mother, I could go on. Itās honestly surprising, looking back, how most of the charactersā core issues stem from the lack of self-assurance and how homeworld views their flaws.
White Diamond and her Homeworld regime ultimately represent how systems put limits and stigma onto people for the sake of uniformity. The consequence of living inside your own head. A fusion cannot happen between two different gems, Pearls must be servants, Quartz gems must be big and strong, and Diamonds must be the perfect leaders. Why? Because thatās just what gems do. Because thatās how the system works. Homeworldās status quo is one of creating an ever-expanding empire at the cost of independence, self-expression, unique lifeforms, and healthy relationships. The system canāt be wrong, White Diamond canāt be flawed, itās how things have always been so why change what isnāt broken.
Sauron: Dominance and Corruption

While he has more screen presence and is a much more a significant part of the story of Lord of the Rings than White Diamond is to SU, the dark lord Sauron is similarly one small part of a larger tale. Heck, he doesnāt even have dialogue in the book trilogy. Also, like White Diamond, Sauron is best represented by his many underlings. Ruthless orcs with crude but effective weaponry, colossal beasts to crush his enemies underfoot, massive armies dedicated to the dark lordās cause of dominating all life in Midde Earth. But whatās most notable about Sauron isnāt the great power he possesses or the armies he commands, itās the way he corrupts and deceives those that stand against him.
The betrayal of Saruman the White, the nine Nazgƻl once being great kings of men who were turned into terrible ringwraiths, and most notoriously, the enticing power of the one ring. Boromir, believing that Gondor can use this evil weapon for good. Smeagol, utterly degraded into a deceitful cave dwelling throttler named Gollum. Frodo, forced to carry a heavy burden that weighs him down both physically and mentally. To Sauron, the corruption of good is a weapon he wields with unmatched lethality.
The insidious nature of his villainy is what makes Sauron the great representative of dominance and corruption that he is. The promises of more enticing good people to do evil for the ārightā reasons and the ruthless conquest for dominion over all is all too real an evil to ignore.
The Martians: Colonialism and Warfare

I debated with myself on whether or not the martians from War of the Worlds should be included here. Unlike Sauron or White Diamond, the martians are clear and present throughout the story. On the other hand, there isnāt a named martian general or a big bad thatās shown to lead the alien invaders into combat. In the end, the fact that the martians are made to purely represent the darkest parts of humanity outweighs the secondary theme of this essay.
One of, if not THE first alien invasion story, War of the Worlds messaging is clear and easy to understand. The tentacled beings from Mars are coldly intelligent, remorseless, and regard our world with envious eyes. They use human blood as sustenance when they arenāt vaporizing us by the hundreds, their tripods are horrific machines of mass destruction, and their invasion is one of slaughter and destruction. But the book is quick to remind us that humanity isnāt so morally innocent compared to the martians. The consumption of our blood seems horrific, but humans have also killed animals and each other for food and resources. Their tripods are colossal and terrifying, but humanity has made countless destructive war machines. The invaders are dead set on wiping out humanity, but humanity not only brought extinction to animals like the dodo bird but to entire groups of our own kind. The martians are not simply an alien invasion to fight back against, itās a cautious look into our worst future. A humanity that prioritizes ruthless colonization and military might is a humanity doomed to be parasitic and heartless.
War of the Worlds also takes a critical view towards solving problems through warfare. Violence is sometimes needed to fight evil, but that does make violence a good thing. The action and battles in War of the Worlds are not thrilling or glorious, they are horrific and even bumbling to an extent. Much like the early British imperials that they represent, the martians are arrogant and only win because they have the better technology. Even the destruction of a tripod has severe consequences, a flaming wreckage falling into a lake and boiling the humans hiding there alive. There is nothing pride or goodness to found in destruction and death. Warfare and violence should be the last resort of those trying to survive, yet humanity and martians brandish their weapons without care or empathy for those beneath them.
The Truth, In-Fighting, and the Seemingly Insignificant
These antagonists all represent a morally dangerous part of humanity. The stubborn refusal to change a flawed status quo, the desire to dominate and corrupt those who donāt, needless conquest and bloody war. But despite all their power and influence, these philosophies that the villains believe in fail them in the end.
For White Diamond, her ultimate failure stems from the mortal enemy of all tyrannical systems: the truth. In the last episode of Steven Universe, White Diamond removes the gemstone from our protagonistās body. Believing that the mischievous Pink Diamond is merely hiding in this human body, White seeks to end this silly game once and for all. But once the gemstone is removed, it does form into Pink Diamond or even Rose Quartz. It forms a bright pink Steven. In the final act of Change Your Mind, White Diamond is faced with reality and all its implications. This gemstone is Steven, itās always been Steven. This half human is not the irrational or childish person, itās White. The leader of Homeworld, the one whoās supposed to know all and make things better, is wrong. But in order to do that, she needs to leave her own head. One of the hardest things for a person to do is admit when theyāre wrong, that their foundational beliefs holding up a status quo is deeply flawed and objectively false. But accepting that you were wrong, learning from and fixing your mistakes, and becoming something better than what you were before is the greatest reward anyone genuinely looking for redemption can ask for.
For Sauron, his victory over Middle Earth comes so close. Minas Tirith has been ravaged, the army of man outside the black gates are crumbling before his might, and the ring bearer has been corrupted. However, just when all hope is burned to ash, something unexpected happens. Gollum, the epitome of the corruptive power that the one ring possesses, attacks Frodo to get back his precious. Whether itās through struggling with Frodo like in the movie or not paying attention like in the book, Gollum falls into the fires of Mount Doom with the ring in tow. In the movies, weāre told that the eye of Sauron can pierce through cloud and stone. Because of this detail, I personally wonder what was going through the dark lordās mind as he watched Gollum plummet to his death. The one ringās defense, Sauronās greatest strength, corrupting others into fighting amongst each other, was what led to his ultimate downfall. This is not the first time something like this has happened. Think back to the orcs fighting amongst themselves, or when Wormtongue stabs Saruman in the back. Not to mention that the mercy of both Frodo and Bilbo is what led to Gollum reaching Mount Doom in the first place. Even with all his armies and power, Sauron underestimated the petty infighting amongst his followers and the little acts of kindness of his enemies. Even when the forces of darkness seemingly succeed, all theyāll have left is each other to destroy. As Frodo himself said in the Two Towers book, they canāt conquer forever.
For the martians, their demise comes outwardly from nowhere. Their Tripods fall silent and they all die due to sickness. The book states that the martians either never encountered bacteria like earthās or they had wiped out all disease on Mars. In both scenarios, the martianās belief in their untouchable superiority over earth led their death. As soon as their invasion started, they were doomed. War of the Worlds isnāt just a hard look at what humanity could become, but also a love letter to all types of life. Bacteria, the seemingly most insignificant part of our world, is our savior here. It is so, so easy to despise germs and how they make mankind ill. But they also decompose dead flesh, helps the human body digest food, and are just as vital to our world as so many other creaturesā humanity takes for granted. All forms of life has a place in this world and to undervalue, let alone actively want to eliminate, all of it is foolhardy and black-hearted.
Itās how these stories come to an end is why Iām attracted to the idea of villains representing abhorrent philosophies. They show the inherent flaws of such morally bankrupt ideas and how their failures are inevitable. The desire for uniformity and belief that your status quo is flawless cannot stand up to the truth of the situation. Great and powerful conquerors seeking to corrupt will find themselves destroying each other when there is nothing left to dominate, while small acts of generosity and sympathy keep their opponents afloat. Arrogant war lords with their mighty machines will crumble to the things they deem to be insignificant.

I love finding characters I can relate (/project onto) within media. Thereās something so comforting about seeing yourself on screen. I end up headcanoning most of them to be in-line with my identities (lesbian, wasian, autistic) because they are literally me in my head!!
Anyway hereās a long ass list of my favorite characters and why I head canon them as autistic for fun!! If you have any others youād like to add Iād love to hear them. (And please note this is just my interpretation, and highly based on my experience with autism. Iām not saying theyāre definitely autistic or that all the traits I listed are the dsm-5 criteria or something.)
Princess Bubblgeum from adventure time:

This girl is peak evil scientist autistic. Her intense need for control, the way she carefully observes the citizens she created, an outsider to them, not quite like them⦠god itās so perfect. I read her as being somewhat low empathy as well, itās hard for her to change her perspective to that of others. Plus the fact her brother neddy is a pretty obvious metaphor for higher supports needs autism. I think they of represent how autism runs in the family and appears in all sorts of different ways in different people. Theyāre sort of two different representations of the spectrum.
Marcy wu from amphibia

I mean this one is just obvious. The biggest nerd of all time. So obsessed with her RPG special interest that she literally sucks her and her friends into a fantasy world. Sheās clumsy (just like me fr), very smart but super socially awkward, a little oblivious and naive. Sheās terrified of change, especially if it means abandoning the few social bonds sheās been able to make. I honestly find it hard to believe this wasnāt intentional.
Entrapta from she-ra

Another pretty overt example. I do have some issues with how she was portrayed in the show- (keeping her on a leash was weird.) but overall I really love her. She understands her tech, not people, and it can cause her to come into conflict with other characters. Their treatment of her makes me sad at times, but itās realistic. I also love some of her other quirks, her love of tiny food, her exitable demeanor, ect.
Pearl from Steven Universe
Peridot is the more obvious example of an autistic character in SU, and while I agree sheās coded that way, I personally resonate more with Pearl. She is not very socially aware, and bothered by disruptions to her routine/ broader life changes. She doesnāt like to break rules (despite being a literal rebel lol.) I find it interesting how she seems to have the poorest understanding of life on earth out of the gems, despite having lived here for thousands of years. She is graceful, but has an almost sort of awkward gangly-ness to her that I relate to. Her neuroticism is also very similar to how my anxiety disorder presents.
Pearl has a tendency to infodump, without realizing those around her are uninterested. Even her relationship with Rose struck a chord with me. The hopeless devotion to her, the way she followed along at her side. Itās how many of my friendships have been. Obvious itās not exactly the same considering Pearl having originally been her servant, but while not being an explicitly autistic trait, that sort of clingy, starstruck relationship is something autistic people are prone to developing. She does little hand stims at times too that I love to see.
Poison Ivy (specifically the version in the Harley Quinn animated show)

Iām surprised I havenāt seen more people mention poison Ivy. Fiercely intelligent and deeply introverted, she isolates herself from all people, and only connects with and understands her plants. (Which her deep affinity for can definitely be read as a special interest.) She very overtly has trouble forming relationships with others.
Sheās blunt, socially awkward and a loner, has something of a flat effect and a monotone voice. Those around her initially read her as cold and impersonable. Her struggle with social anxiety as well as intense fear of failure/ low self esteem is also very relatable to me. She also often struggles to express/understand her feelings and emotions. Her radical political ideas and the fact that sheās literally an ecoterrorist paints her as having a very strong sense of justice and a somewhat black and white worldview. (Me)
Finally, her relationship with Harley just SCREAMS neurodivergent solidarity. Harley Quinn is (I think canonically) adhd, and theyāre both outsiders in the world that found each other and just⦠get each other. Sheās Ivyās closest and only friend and amazing girlfriend and god itās all so perfect.
They remind me a lot of the relationship I have with my best friend with adhd except theirs is gayer.

Hiii I want to know something about the mcyt su au! The way you assign gems to each person, does their personality influence the choice?? Or are you just going for the visual vibes of he gemstone? How do you choose
honestly it depends! some designs like bdubs was definitely more based on visuals, nephrites are green and have that one big eye so i was like, omg, that's very bdubs so i went with that for his gem.
others i feel are more personality-based, like scar as a spinel. or role-wise with mumbo as a peridot. it honestly depends on what grabs me more.
but the most important thing for me though is that for base designs (non-fusions) i try as much as i can to stick to ONLY canon designs/gems we've seen in the show, this is so i can pretty much directly pull color palettes from those characters and keep it as loyal-looking to the show as possible. it makes them more recognizable as SU designs in my mind, i did this with both gemcyt and gemstuck with only a couple exceptions (nepeta as a cat's eye, docm as bloodstone, etc.) i think a part of the fun challenge is trying to conform with these baseline designs while also trying to make the character recognizable. it's why some troll gemstuck designs have horns, and others don't. it depends on if i feel it was vital for their design aspects as most gems (unless corrupted) don't have horns.
with fusions i'm a lot more free-form with it, but for base designs i like to have at least 1 solid reference to compare the design to so i can try to match the show as close as possible. obviously this means i'm limited on what gems i can make people, and sometimes that puts me in a tricky spot because i also dislike doing too many repeats of the same gem, exceptions in both gemstuck/gemcyt being that i have multiple pearls (kanaya/eridan/jane in gemstuck, joel/pearl in gemcyt)
because let's be honest if we did this only on gem societal roles, the majority of the hermits would be either peridots as redstoners or bismuths/lapis lazulis as builders
so as far as choosing gems, that's sorta my mindset going into it! it's a mix of things but there's restrictions i give myself and i try to work within those when i can! :D
#so for example for gemcyt i havent made any designs with jades yet#so if i designed someone in the future#there's a good chance whoever it'd be i'd find a way to make them a jade#gemcyt#chris talks#hope this makes sense!

you sly dog, you got me monologuing!
steven universe was a show that for the longest time really felt like it was going somewhere. i followed it religiously from around the end of season 1. the first 2 or so seasons were honestly really good, and it really felt like there was a cool overarching plot being set up.
The stuff with peridot and the cluster was by far the peak of the series, but after that, the actually interesting parts of the show got sparser and the hiatuses got longer and the show would actively fuck with its audience like "oh look this upcoming episode has an ominous title are you ready for us to actually do something interesti- lmao no sorry that was just another filler episode, really got you there didn't we teehee. anyway see you in six months"
the show has a tendency to just drop bury and forget its most interesting bits. after the malachite thing the show basically goes "oh yeah so lapis is broody and sad anyway she's gone, don't worry about jasper, moving on". after like season 3 or something, peridot, the single most interesting character, gets mostly pushed off-screen. the shit with pearl tricking garnet into fusing (DEFINITELY NOT AN ALLEGORY FOR ANYTHING DON'T THINK ABOUT IT) gets resolved in 1 or 2 episodes and iirc never brought up again. pink lars basically gets dropped like a rock before anything interesting is done with him. the sardonyx and malachite things especially aren't inherently bad topics to include on a show, but the way they're never truly explored is, they're some pretty serious shit that the show seemingly doesn't realize were just left hanging there.
Don't get me started on the ending, white diamond's introduction is one of the best scenes in the entire show. she's shown as this unimaginable force that doesn't even let steven get a word in, you know, this character whose first instinct is always to solve problems with words. just a couple episodes later, this dictator who rules over hundreds or thousands of planets with an iron fist that only serve to be carved out and sterilized to reproduce their species of virus metaphors gets turned good by what amounts to a "no u". I'm not saying the gems should've nuked homeworld or whatever, but it sure as fuck should've been a hell of a lot harder than that. the excuses that the show was cut short due to garnet's wedding are moot considering that the show is something like 80% filler episodes and they got a movie (which was actually pretty good, i can't find much to complain about with the movie tbf) and an extra spinoff season afterwards.
steven universe holds a special place in my shriveled hater heart because it was not bad all the way through, in fact it was awesome at times, and yet they shat all over its potential by having seemingly no real idea what they were doing (i wonder if the way they didn't have any consistent standards for how storyboarders drew characters mirrors a similar aimless philosophy in the writer's room). it's also personal because i wasted like 6 years of my life hoping it would get consistently good at some point
Do you think Steven Universe was a good show? -Yes -No -I did not watch Steven Universe

Ok so lots of su thoughts, but first off I wanna say it was sooo good and I like a lot of the characters so honestly it's hard to choose my favoritesš«. The lore is also really interesting, especially the whole concept of fusions and learning the initial roles for each gem and how their creation affects them.
I went in not expecting to like the diamonds that much but I loved blue from the start, and I can kinda understand why pearl chased pink for thousands of years tbh. But white gives me the most sadistic yandere potential ideas, I gotta start writing atpš®āšØ
Jasper is my still my fave even after seeing the movie and futureš«£ Idk itās just something about her strength and disdain for organics thatās enraptured me body and soulš she can bully me anytime (also malachite is a pretty cool fusionš)
ššš Eeeeeh I'm so pumped that you like it, you don't even know!! And omg if you start writing for it, I'll die on the spot šµ
Omg yes, every gem is special in their own way,I get what you mean. Like I started watching it after I saw Blue Diamond in a youtube video and I just immediately fell for her (her voice actress ohhh oooooh... And that scene where she scolds Pink... Oooooh... I want to be scolded by her, just treated like a precious little pet š„ŗš„ŗ) but she doesn't appear until way into the series - in the meantime I developed a huge crush on Peridot (she is just so so cute), Jasper (Jasper is Jasper lol, she is simply amazing š«£) and just... always felt so heartbroken for Pearl etc etc. SU feels so bittersweet a lot of the time, it's such a great show and the characters are wonderful. I can't even decide on my top three, but Blue is just my wife. Always. Jasper is definitely top three as well, but the third place? Idk soooo many gems that could fill that one... Like, I love the pearls and the diamonds, Spinel etc etc š And yeah, I wish we would have had more lore in the show!! It's the one thing I missed in Future. Homeworld is just so interesting š„° haha sorry for rambling š«£ I'm just so excited
Also, fun fact: my very first fic was a Poly!Diamonds/Reader, that's how much I adore these three š It was/is super fluffy and self-indulgent. Good old times haha.

Famously, one of Steven Universeās biggest early misdirections was one of genre: Early on, the show played up the idea of the Gems being *Magic* and framed everything through a Fantasy-lense. However, as Steven learned more about Gem Lore, the show started getting a much stronger Science-Fantasy\Science-Fiction vibe to it instead. Gems are an alien race of silicon-based gem-computers using hard light holograms and a lot of their magic is some sort of Sufficiently Advanced Technology.Ā
However, ever sinceĀ āToo Short To Rideā Iāve begun to theorize that theĀ āscientificā explanation for Gemkind was not the full picture either. That Gems do have an element ofĀ āMagicā in them that their very sciencey and structured society doesnāt fully understand. Which is what can lead to the development of Powers that Gems arenātĀ āsupposedā to have, out of a combination of this misunderstood Magic in the Gems and some strong emotional reaction. Most obviously, this applies to Peridot developing Metal Powers, when Era-2 Peridots are hardly supposed to have any special powers at all.
But it also applies to Pearl and Rose both having summoned weapons when it seems like onlyĀ āSoldierā-type Gems are supposed to be created with the power to summon a weapon on Homeworld - and definitely not Diamonds or Pearls. That would explain why neither of them are seen using their weapons in flashbacks to early days of the Rebellion, as they havenātĀ ādevelopedā the power to have a weapon yet.Ā
(And correct me if Iām wrong but I donāt think Pearl is EVER seen using her summoned spear during the Rebellion-Era? Seems like Rose figured out the summoned-weapon thing before Pearl did)
Now, hereās the new thing Iāve been thinking about: is it possible that Roseās Healing Powers are ALSO a power she developed beyond what she was supposed to?Ā
Again, my speculation is that developing new powers is something that might happen as a result of extreme emotions; Summoning Weapons out of a desire to fight (or possibly Rose summoning weapons out of the desire to reinvent herself as a Quartz and Pearl out of the guilt over how the Rebellion turned out??) and Peridotās Metal Powers as a result of her newfound independence while also missing the freedom her Limb Enhancers used to grant her.Ā
So under that Logic, Pink Diamond might have been created purely withĀ ādestructive powersā (as White Diamond saw Pink as a representation of herĀ Sanguine aspects and those aspects as entirely negative). But after traumatizing Volleyball, Pink has become so overcome with guilt and the desire toĀ āFIX IT!ā that it made her spontaneously manifest Healing Powers (which of course, donāt actually heal Volleyball. From a metaphorical standpoint, if Pinkās Healing Powers are a manifestation of her guilt - than Pinkās guilt on itās own canāt make Volleyballās trauma go away). With said powers only growing stronger as Pink\Roseās character developed and she had many, many other things she wished to heal.
This can also be an explanation as to why Pink Diamondās powers are the only ones that can effect organic beings, and not just Gems (with Yellowās Destabilizer, Blueās Emotional Aura and Whiteās Possession explicitly working only on other Gems). Pink had an interest in Organic Life for a long time (the flashback with the worm-monsters in Change Your Mind, and the Garden was filled with organic plants), so it makes sense that a power she developed based on her emotional state will include it as well.
(And even if Pink was always created with both Healing and Destructive Powers, itās possible that her powers expanded to include the ability to effect Organic Life as she grew more intersted in organic lifeforms and in protecting them. Including that uber-powerful Pink Zombie Tears Ability)Ā

Through Season 3 now.
Lapis continues to be GOATed. Her⦠mixed feelings on Jasper are actually really compelling and a good flaw for her.
Peridot was a great villain and is an even better hero. She continually steals the show and is my favorite.
Itās interesting to watch Steven take more and more control over the situations he finds himself in while remaining affable.
All the Crystal Gems, Steven included, have given us a good look at their insecurities. Theyāre all at a good point for their character arcs considering weāre a little over halfway through the show, which is really impressive.
Still not big on the Beach City acquaintances, Vidalia, Sadie, and Lars excepted, so I appreciate that thereās less focus on them. Greg and Connie are mostly enough to ground the show IMO.
Pacing has been a lot brisker without feeling too rushed. Most episodes are very important to the story, but almost none of them pack *too* much in.
Yeah, the Garnet-Amethyst-Pearl throuple dynamics are definitely there lmfao.
Amethyst is a good bridge to slice-of-life stuff. I will never forget the helicopter scene.
Pearl being a disaster lesbian wasnāt enough, so I guess sheās also insecure about the box she was made to fit into. Really, really good character.
Connie feels⦠almost finished with her character arc to become a capable Crystal Gem? Seems a little rushed, I hope they donāt phase her out.
Greg continues to be the single most likable character in this show, but they havenāt really done that much with him outside of being a backstory vehicle.
Bismuth was a fine villain, wish they had done something a little more creative than āboth sides are badā with her, or at least taken it in a more interesting direction. You could have built a whole arc around her and her disillusionment with Steven.
Jasper feels straight out of a bad anime. Sheās forgettable outside of her fusion hangups.
The Ruby quintet was a ton of fun, wish we got a little more of them and their combined zero braincells.
Feels like the Diamond Authority and the Crystal Gems are in a standoff. Interested to see who shoots first.
The show isnāt perfect, but itās damn compelling.
Finally finished Season 1 of Steven Universe! Only took me nine years and one transition.
Lapis is the GOAT. The gems let her stay trapped in a mirror (put her there?) and she was still nice to Steven almost instantly, didnāt treat him like Rose. She only took the ocean in a desperate attempt to get home (very reasonable crashout), she warned the Gems about Peridot, and she fused with the orange one, sacrificing herself in the process, to trap both of them and protect the Earth.
Steven himself is a sweetheart but that kid is absolutely developing an anxiety disorder.
The three other Crystal Gems are absolutely banging each other, right?
Amethyst is Wario but a hot woman. I love it. Hope she can work through her insecurities.
Interested to see where Pearlās character arc goes, it feels like itās just started. Iām not sure whether she needs to chill out about fusion or the show needs to get way less chill about it.
So many questions about Garnet (especially given that she has two halves to explore) but her cool factor is overwhelming. Sheās also really come in clutch while showing vulnerability in how she deals with raising Steven.
Greg is the only good Redditor.
Connie is interesting. I do wonder how sheāll handle being slowly roped into the gem stuff while addressing her parents, since thatās obviously where this is going. I hope they handle Stevonnie better in future episodes, the whole thing with teens hitting on them was super uncomfortable even if that was the point.
I need Peridot to come back (Iām aware she does, but you know what I mean.) Her vague ignorance of Earth contrasted with her calculated personality is fantastic.
Most of the other humans aside from Sadie and Lars are forgettable. I hope Lars gets some actual redemption and Sadie stops being down horrendous.
The pacing in the first half of the season was atrocious and the reason it took me so long to get through the show, thereās only like two and a half memorable episodes out of the first twenty. Then Steven is introduced to that mirror and things get genuinely incredible.
I wish we had more scenes from outside of Stevenās perspective - thatās my only complaint with the second half. The other Gems are doing so much that we see so little of and their dynamics are great!
Good show, hope the pacing stays stellar now that we have our main conflict with Home World

I donāt need you to respect me, I respect me
Iām gonna miss writing about Amethyst.
As the most sisterly Crystal Gem, a firebrand in the new role of middle child after spending millennia as the baby of the group, Amethystās story is about growing from a wild teen to a responsible adult. Like Steven, she feels the need to prove that sheās a Crystal Gem too, but unlike Steven, she already is a Crystal Gem, so she carries a different kind of resentment as she continues to be treated like a child. Itās made even worse by her warrior instincts clashing with her small frame: she lives with the constant anxiety that sheās a mistake, a Gem who came out wrong and doesnāt belong in her family, so she comforts and distracts herself with hedonism and shapeshifting. Her problem goes beyond not feeling respected: deep down, she fears that she doesnāt deserve respect.
But she changes her mind.
āThis isnāt normal.ā
The Return and Jailbreak culminated the first act of Steven Universe, giving our characters subtle achievements (Amethyst and Pearl casually fuse into Opal, Greg reveals a deeper understanding of the Gems than we once thought, Beach City comes together as a community when Steven is in danger) and huge changes (Steven summons a massive shield, Garnetās status as a fusion is confirmed, Lapis goes from prisoner to imprisoner). While not an official finale, Beta and Earthlings culminated the second act, narrowing the focus to five characters as they each reach one milestone or another: Lapis and Amethyst find a level of peace, Peridot defends her new home, Jasper succumbs to corruption, and Steven helps his friends but fails to help his enemy.
In a way, Change Your Mind culminates the third act with an even narrower focus. Sure, it gives big moments to a ton of characters (thereās fanservice galore, and we see the three Diamonds in particular take enormous steps), but we zero in on Steven in the same way the entire act has zeroed in on Steven, because this is a story about identity. It isnāt only about who he is, but who he wants to be moving forward, and fusing all the insights heās learned from his human family, his Crystal Gem family, and his Diamond family into a song that encapsulates his growth over the course of the series.
We start in the most lifelike of the Diamond dreams, so real that Steven still sees himself as Steven rather than embodying Pink. Once again, this connection emerges from sleeping in a location where Pink once dwelled, but while he wasnāt feeling her impatience and rage in Jungle Moon, nor her hardening resolve in Canāt Go Back, nor her whimsy in Familiar, this time they share the same headspace when theyāre both locked in a tower.
Considering how bombastic things get in this episode, I love how low-key this final dream remains until White Diamond interferes. Weāre as lost as Steven at first, worrying about Connie and baffled at Blueās recognizable mood but incongruous accusations, but as the truth becomes clear, he transforms into Pink off-screen without any fanfare, both in body and in mind: Steven isnāt questioning Blueās warning about Pink Pearl, Pink Diamond is apologizing for her own behavior in Zach Callisonās voice. Still, looking down jolts him out of it, and after seeing the Crystal Gems poofed at the ball for a more definitive Steven memory, we cycle in Roseās horror at her family launching a final attack on Earth. The rapid-fire identity shifts that follow inspired the most haunting piece of promo art for the episode, drawn by Rebecca Sugar herself, but I didnāt wanna display it without a seizure warning.
Itās excellent exposition, hitting the highlights of the Diamondsā many wrongs and establishing Stevenās fraying sense of self in a way thatās both artful and brief; itās important to remind younger viewers about the stakes, but Change Your Mind doesnāt pretend that anyone should be watching this episode without context, so it doesnāt prioritize thorough explanation. And despite how frightening the nightmare becomes, Steven gains a new sense of clarity after seeing the pattern laid out in front of him. The Diamonds are hurting him in the same way they hurt his mother, and if heās going to help everyone, he needs to help himself.
When Blue Diamond returns to the tower in modern day, Steven isnāt afraid, and he isnāt alone. The first of many puns riddling the finale emerges (āDĆ©jĆ Ā Blue!ā) before Connie proves why sheās the perfect partner for our hero, platonic or otherwise. Heās terrible at confronting the people that hurt himāthis would require him to acknowledge heās hurt in the first place, which heās also terrible atābut if she was comfortable enough with confrontation to call out her best friend when he wrongs her, Blue Diamond doesnāt stand a chance. Connie comes out swinging, loading the bases with candor and sass despite Blueās confusion over why a human even gets an opinion about this stuff, which makes Stevenās refusal to apologize hit the Diamond like a grand slam.
I love that Stevenās flat ānoā takes Connie by surprise as well as Blue, because yeah, itās uncharacteristically blunt for someone whoās spent his entire trip to Homeworld bending over backwards like he usually does to accommodate others. When he doubles down by explaining that he isnāt sorry about creating a show that celebrates queer characters whoops sorry I mean fusion, Callison makes it sound like the most obvious thing in the world, and this is what upsets Blue enough to inflict her tears on him. Weāll learn even more about Pinkās temper in Steven Universe Future, but the simple act of not bowing to authority makes Steven āworse than everā in Blueās mind: violence is more acceptable than insubordination. (Also, violence in cartoons is more acceptable than queer folks just sorta existing in cartoons, but thatās neither here nor there.)
Change Your Mind is about combating bigotry and cycles of abuse, and Blue is the obvious first test. Sheās a bigot who doesnāt think sheās a bigot (compared to Yellow, who doesnāt care that sheās a bigot, and White, whoās quite proud of being a bigot). She passively perpetuates a toxic status quo (compared to Yellow, who actively perpetuates it, and White, who established it in the first place). It makes sense that sheās the first of the remaining Diamonds to change her mind, because all it takes for her to realize that something is wrong is thinking about it a little harder.
This doesnāt let her off the hook, of course: Blueās slothāthe sin, not the animalāmight not look flashy next to Yellowās wrath or Whiteās pride or Pinkās envy, but she still chose to do nothing for thousands of years rather than contemplate how her actions and her society might have wronged Pink. If it was this easy for Blue to realize she was hurting Pink, it makes it that much more of an issue that it took her this long to figure it out. Unintentional bigots might be the ābestā option by default, but they can be just as harmful as intentional bigots, and thereās a special sort of damage that can come from an oppressor who truly believes themselves an ally.
That said, while itās important to acknowledge her blame (emphasized here when she only stops attacking Steven when he calls her out rather than the Diamonds in general), Blue is also a victim. Sheās one of the most powerful beings on Homeworld, but sheās still trapped by White Diamond, and resorts to putting others down as a means of reclaiming a sense of that power. In the same way oppressed people often turn to sexism and racism and homophobia to make themselves feel bigger, Blue (and Yellow) reinforce Whiteās sweeping bigotry in the same way they echo her family-specific abuse. Itās not a good coping mechanism, in this show or in the real world, but understanding the problem is key to fixing it.
So it still feels like a victory when Blue turns, even though it shouldāve happened ages ago, and even though sheās a tyrant. She isnāt just deciding to help Steven, sheās breaking out of that cycle in a way that allows for growth beyond our heroās immediate concerns. Lisa Hannigan captures this transformation beautifully, shifting from manipulative whining about Pinkās behavior to a crushing realization that sheās the one whoās wrong. And even as she joins Stevenās side, she remains weighed down by her longstanding prejudice: Hannigan stutters as she refers to the Crystal Gems as his family, and her triumphant defense of Stevenās name to Yellow comes with the caveat that sheās still misgendering him.
But before we get to Yellow, we take a pit stop that grounds us back to Steven and Connieās hunger. It may seem small, but this is a critical moment in establishing Stevenās humanity in a way the show has quietly done from day one: with food.
The very first scene of Steven Universe establishes our heroās human half in a donut shop, upset about dessert. From there, the next five episodes drill in that Steven will take a unique approach to his magical Gem heritage, and they all involve food in a major way: Cookie Cats, then his fatherās saying about pork chops and hot dogs, then the Cheeseburger Backpack (important enough to be the episodeās name), then the Together Breakfast (ditto), then creating a monster based on fries.
Itās not just Steven, either. The first few Connie episodes involve eating and drinking in ways that show hints of growth (worrying about trans fats, then sneaking food into movie theaters) and mark key moments in her life (sharing a juicebox, taking her parents to dinner). Larsās development is tied with his love of baking, and on top of him and Sadie working at the Big Donut, the Frymans and the Pizzas are so tied to their food service jobs that itās in their names. And speaking of names, weāve got Vidalia calling her sons Sour Cream and Onion. It even extends to the Gems: Amethystās connection with Earth means she loves food, and Pearlās greater distance from humanity means she canāt stomach it.
Food is fundamentally something that humans require and Gems donāt, and just like we saw in Larsās Head, Stevenās physical body forces him to think about his own needs despite his usual focus on others. Both his humanity and his ability to stand up for himself are key to his eventual victory, and what couldāve been a generic transition between Blue and Yellowās big scenes instead becomes a quiet Steven scene. Steven changing into his usual clothes (including his momās star) and Connie changing into her own outfit (including her dadās jacket) is the perfect finishing touch before we dive back into the drama.
True to their natures, Yellow Diamond gets a starker introduction than Blueās dream sequence: as the lights burst on, we get two shots focusing on a horrifying number of mutated Gem Shards floating around in the room, then the Crystal Gemsā thankfully intact gems in one big bubble, before panning down to the villain who caused all this pain. The menace is palpable before she even opens her mouth, but Patti LuPoneās low tone keeps the mood from boiling over just long enough that when she loses her cool, it hits like a freight train.
Blueās passive bigotry endured because she lacked introspection, but Yellowās active bigotry requires constantly justifying actions she knows are cruel by presenting it as a matter of superior reasoning. Weāve known from her first appearance that Yellowās seething fury undermines her reputation for cold logic, and now more than ever the connection between her behavior and that of āsophisticatedā bigots is clear. You know the type: openly, smugly hateful, but couching their hate as something derived from some deep knowledge about the subject, whether in religious convictions or whatever āscienceā they can scrape together to confirm their worldview.
Sure enough, even in her rage, Yellow lays down what she sees as a rational explanation for why it was okay to mistreat Pink, and why itās okay that they themselves are mistreated: if they make exceptions for anyone, even other Diamonds, they must make exceptions for everyone, and chaos reigns. Besides the slippery slope being a fallacy, her argument is punctured by Connieās second big retort of the night, pointing out that this extreme conclusion of Homeworld Gems living free actually sounds pretty nice. But you canāt force this type of bigot to change their mind through reason; if such a person was actually interested in logical worldviews, they wouldnāt have become a bigot in the first place. You need to change their heart.
Fortunately, emotions are Blueās domain, so sheās just the person to help. Unfortunately, in the same way she still canāt get Stevenās pronouns right, Blue lacks experience with healthy communication, and strikes a first blow against Yellow on instinct. The ensuing brawl is brutal, switching between the massive scale of two warring titans and the smaller scale of Steven and Connie scrambling to save the Crystal Gems as Blue and Yellow unload millennia of baggage on each other. Itās so important that Blue is the physical instigator here, as it fuels Yellowās white-hot self-righteous streak like nothing else, and it keeps the fight from being one-sided all the way through: Yellow pretty much needs to be the one dealing the final blow for the scene to stick, so it gets balanced out by Blueās opening punch.
Blue uses her powers on Yellow, and Yellow uses her powers on Blue, but Stevenās power is talking. So just like with Blueās conversion, Connie gets the opening words while Steven gets the finisher. When he finally gets her attention after being ignored throughout the scene, he makes Yellow listen to him by using the same food-based expression I mentioned from all the way back in Laser Light Cannon. Itād pack a bigger punch if Greg said āIf every pork chop were perfect, we wouldnāt have hot dogsā at literally any other point in the show, but it still does the trick.
Blue was emotionally ready to accept that Pink was suffering, but hadnāt considered the Diamondsā role in that suffering. Yellow knew that Pink suffered thanks to the Diamonds, but suppressed her emotions to the point where she couldnāt empathize with her sisterās plight. Blue needed to be more thoughtful to change, and Yellow needed to be more in touch with her emotions to change, and thus the stage is set for the Battle of Heart and Mind against White Diamond.
Except that this isnāt the lesson of Change Your Mind. Blue and Yellow show that some bigots can be reached, which is great! But despite their differences, Steven uses the same basic strategy in both: he doesnāt let them belittle his identity, he confidently dispels their wrongheaded assumptions, and he gets help from allies instead of shouldering the burden himself. We spend the beginning of the episode seeing that in the right circumstances this approach can work, but from here weāll see that with some bigots, itās a non-starter.
So long as you can engage with bigots while maintaining your self-respect, it can be good work to try and help them see the light. Itās not an obligation, but if you want to change hearts and minds, Steven provides a good template for how to do it. Now the rest of the episode can focus on the bigger lesson: if someone refuses to respect your humanity when youāre steadfast and forthright, it isnāt your job to breathe in their poison, or to hold your breath until you asphyxiate waiting for change.
But more on that after the break!
I Canāt Believe Weāve Come So Far
As we reach the end of the original series, it would be criminal not to acknowledge three long-time storyboarders who are on their way out. This isnāt their final contribution to the series, as only one of Change Your Mindās twelve credited writer/boarders didnāt go on to work on The Movie in some way (Christine Liu, whose tenure was brief but great), and Hilary Florido stayed on as a supervisor for Future. But I wanted to write the big sendoffs here, as this is the last proper āepisodeā that these three worked on as regular boarders. So itās time to say goodbye to Katie Mitroff, Hilary Florido, and Jeff Liu.
First up is Katie Mitroff, who clocked two early knockouts with Alone Together and The Test alongside Florido. MitroffānāFlorido went on to make other classics like Maximum Capacity and Joy Ride before the former teamed up with Lamar Abrams and the latter teamed up with Jesse Zuke for their next batch of episodes.
With Abrams, Mitroff deepened the lore of the show with We Need to Talk, Stevenās Birthday, Bismuth, Buddyās Book, Three Gems and a Baby, and especially The Answer. She gave us the harrowing revelation of Back to the Moon, and the most ridiculous episode of the series, Restaurant Wars. Her final partner was Paul Villeco, finishing strong with The Trial, Back to the Kindergarten, Your Mother and Mine, Pool Hopping, Whatās Your Problem?, Reunited, and Change Your Mind, 100% of which are either in my Love āem ranking or my Top Episodes. (Oh, sorry, spoiler alert I love Change Your Mind.)
Itās strange, because she didnāt work on any of the major episodes of Amethystās big arc at the end of Season 3, but Mitroff is one of my favorite Amethyst boarders: sheās the consistent thread between Maximum Capacity, Back to the Moon, and Whatās Your Problem?, three cornerstones of the character. She excelled at going outside the showās usual style, as seen in The Answer and Your Mother and Mine, and itās no coincidence she helped animate Isnāt It Love? to bring Cotton Candy Garnet back for one last ride.
Katie Mitroff is an absolute rock star, I wish her well and you should too.

Why Lapis and Pearl Could Work As A Great Pairing
It is without a doubt that most people agree that Lapis and Pearl would do absolutely anything for Steven. Maybe not anything as Lapis jumped off to the nearest solar system to get away from conflict, but he is in fact the one person she would indefinitely pull out extra stops for (ie; willing to indulge befriending Peridot, live on and try earth, go into the ocean once more, etc) . But I do not think that would be the one of the driving forces between their relation but it might be one of the factors to goad them into trying and befriending each other. And perhapsā¦. More.
Similarities On a surface level you can perhaps glean several similarities, perhaps similar shadow and body type, sasuke pointing hair⦠And then another layer and find their personalities are vastly different. Pearl is very educated, prefers order, dramatic, emotional, enjoys engaging in combat, very forgiving (ex; is quick to forgive Peridot once she actually makes the amends to not call her an object), and does her best to make up for mistakes (ex; several episodes of making it up to Garnet).
Lapis is very lazy and blase, the barn she and Peridot have formed together has no sense of order and moreso chaos, she instantly flies at the first sight of conflict, is the least forgiving gem out there (ex; holds it against the crystal gems for pretty much the entirety of the series, and Peridot goes lengths and miles to try and get Lapis forgive her and still is unable to and it takes Steven to intervene and scold her to make an attempt), and honestly? Lapis hardly ever apologizes for her mistakes versus Pearl. She shows signs of guilt but she never really apologizes to Peridot for anything sheās done to her nor Steven nor⦠Well, really anyone else, except in Future.
But that aside, itās when you think about their more lighthearted sides and trauma is where most of their similarities lie.
Hobbies
As off as it sounds, itās fairly essential in pretty much any relationship to cross over a few hobbies, even if you donāt share everything, it often all starts with something along those lines. And Pearl and Lapis share a huge chunk of their hobbies, believe it or not.
Both Lapis and Pearl definitely enjoy reading, Pearl being the educational beast she is and Lapis probably enjoys the relaxed activity. In fact their genres might be even similar as Lapis and Pearl enjoy reading odd textbooks (ex; The hairstyles book for Lapis, and the engineering book for Pearl) and both enjoy dramas (albeit, perhaps this might be different) like Camp Pining Hearts and Pearl was willing to write a play and overseer one in Jamieās case. This perhaps is b-level canon however, in the comic issue Camp Pining Play, Lapis is willingly engaging in participating and acting out in a play, she even enjoys it.
If given incentive of enjoying the subject already, Lapis is willing to perhaps enjoy the drama of things along with Pearl.
Both enjoy singing, if weāre going off Lapis was previously like other Lapis, that would mean singing and dancing is looked down upon on her caste. So the fact she even makes the attempt to do so in Distant Shore means sheās practicing in it, and if we want to add another layer of it, in the game Unleash the Light, one of Lapisās key items is the Crying Breakfast Friends Sing-Along. And who else enjoys karaoke? Pearl (ie; the commercial karaoke). Also Lapis does it in Future so like if you want canon material itās right there in Why So Blue.
This is a bit of a stretch but itās clear that Lapis enjoys the arts which her participation in the class and what the heck else she does with Peridot in the barn, and Pearl has at the very least has experience in it. (ex; the drawing she makes, despite her humble opinion, makes it clear sheās done it before, in fact Iām willing to bet she even painted that fucking painting of Rose Quartz) It perhaps could lead to some more experience and artworks together if you know what I meanā¦
Casting that aside, itās clear the two have a main stream of things to enjoy together should they choose to versus some other couples. (And different ones should they choose to introduce the other, Pearl with baking and sword fighting and Lapis with farming and flying, etc)
Traumas
Now this is the important part, Iām willing to argue they both can share extremely similar and relate to each otherās problems. They just have vastly different ways of coping with it, or well⦠They both have some similarities there as well, but weāll address that in the next paragraph-ish.
But the biggest one? Both miss their homeworld. Dearly.
In fact itās the driving force for Lapisās introductory episodes and one of Pearlās where she tries to get Steven into a rocketship back to her home. Both are ancient and dusty as fuck, or well, at least heavily implied to be ancient with the fact of Pearl commenting she learned the sword when she was only ten thousand years old (Sworn to the Sword iirc), the war was six thousand which implies Pearl learned before it. And Lapis, itās merely conjecture however the fact that Lapis isnāt a vegetable after and still has a strong sense of identity after being in the mirror for 4 thousand years says something (ie; My name is LAPIS LAZULI!), the likely conclusion is the fact itās because thatās not even close to how old she is. Itās only a fraction of her lifetime, which means both are⦠Well, old as hell. And even more likely? They come from the same āhomeworldā unlike Peridot or Amethyst who were made after and Garnet who has herself.
The second one is the one both of them likely have their divisive opinions on, especially as they were from opposing sides of it, is that they were both part of the War.
Both obviously have their traumaās from it, as shown as Pearl in āA Single Pale Roseā sheās still traumatized over the thousands of shattered gems (which is essentially corpses to her) she was forced to witness right after the war, and Lapis being forced to watch inside the mirror as everyone condemns her to being a crystal gem. Iām willing to bet she saw everyone die while inside the thing as well. As well as considering Lapis never really got over anything as she was gonna literally yeet herself away at the mere IDEA of the war⦠Well, who else could help her but another person who knows the horrors as well? And Pearl has experience as she had a support system unlike Lapis who got worse and worse purely just by being herself.
Moving on as I donāt have a cool and smooth transition... Ā This might be a bit of a stretch, but the last thing they both share very heavily over is the fact both were objectified.
Pearl was born to be an object, whereas Lapis was forced to become one, the mirror. And both consistently fight over the fact throughout most of the series. In the movie, the thing that makes Pearl remember herself is the freedom to be herself, and when she returns to her homeworld sheās forced to be reminded of her place when she talks to Holly Blue and returns to Steven in the final season. Lapis is obviously shook over it and holds it against the fact she always feels like sheās being used, (ā[...] AND YOU CANāT KEEP ME TRAPPED ANYMORE!ā) she longs for a safe place and to be free just as well just as Pearl does and the freedom to express herself (ie; her art). And who else but Pearl----- *coughcouhgcough*
Differences
I covered this in the first part where it's obvious the two have very vast differences when it comes to their personalities. But I find it important to have differences as both have something to bring to the table with their differences, no? Another essential part of a working couple.
And to quickly cover what I had before, their personalities. Pearl is literal and Lapis is sarcastic, Pearl is outwardly emotional and sobs and Lapis moodily and angrily exists, so on and so forth. How does this work? Itās also one of the hardest parts of their relationship, should they ever try it out because one of their biggest differences, is one of their flaws in a relationship as proven over and over.
Pearl is all give and no take, and Lapis is all take and no give. Which is a mix for a toxic relationship, as Pearl would constantly be giving to Lapis as Pearlās entire worth as shown in her previous relation was all about what she would give to Rose, or else she was nothing. Even by the end of the main series she still needs to be reminded sheās still something without her. And Lapisās emotional baggage? Letās face it, Lapis is selfish and itās all about her. Sheās angry? Sheās gonna fuck you up (ie; Jasper and the two Lapis), Lapis doesnāt want to deal with war? She doesnāt even think twice about what Peridot wants, and jumps away despite Steven calling out towards her.
But, but, but, but⦠Itās also a mix for something amazing as after their development, theyāre kind of the perfect people to call each other out. In theory of course should they communicate.
Lapis would teach Pearl to be a little more selfish and care about her own needs, whereas Lapis needs constant reminders to actually take notice about what others want and feel (ex; the way she immediately rushes in and notices Stevenās expression at the last moment). Itās clear that Pearl isnāt willing to be treated that way should Lapis do so (ex; the way she snapped back at Peridot and towards Holly Blue) and Lapis upon caring enough? Is in fact willing to try to do better (ex; Why so blue, and Alone at Sea). Itās just that Lapis is farther behind on maturity (considering she ran away and panics instantly twice in a row). They can strike a perfect balance should they put the effort to do so, which would lead to the possible second problem they might have and would need to work through.
And the second difference the two of them have?
Fusion.
Itās the one trauma Lapis has that Pearl wouldnāt understand, and, itās something Pearl clearly finds something addicting or to use above others. In fact she needed a crash course on it with the string of episodes of what she did to Garnet. Because Pearl is the kind of person who would desperately try so hard to not repeat the same mistake, sheās probably sheās willing to wait a millennia about it or even be fine with never fusing with Lapis. Because consent is important, but I think because of her actual experience with good and loving fusions? She might not be actually be a bad candidate for helping Lapis should she ever want to try again.
The Biggest Conflict
Now, for the biggest problem of the relationship. Uh, letās be real hereā¦. Despite all these arguments and nice claims and all.
Lapis doesnāt like Pearl, at all. Perhaps she even holds the biggest grudge against Pearl because Pearl was the one who literally carried her around in the mirror for a good chunk of time, doesnāt even bother to learn who she was, and even was willing to bubble her and trap her further. And Lapis probably has incentive to keep it against her for purely that fact as she was holding it against Peridot for the same fact, except for the fact Pearl has made zero amends to apologize for it. So why would Lapis ever want to talk to her?
You might consider the possibility of Steven but itās not his job to make them friends. The only thing the two of them would do for him is to pretend to be friends, as shown in āHit the Diamondā and āGem Harvestā but otherwise, thereās clear distaste from Lapisās side (ie; The New Crystal Gems) and her consistent āfuck the crystal gemsā attitude from the beginning. Maybe for him they might try something however I doubt itās enough.
Regardless, I do believe an apology is due on both sides whenever they are ready. And that would be the start of perhaps their romantic relationship shenanigans which I consistently desire. Also Iām a slut for tense relationships to friendship to lovers if people would just---
Anyway I think thereās a lot more material for them to work with and they might actually be a pretty awesome couple

@ghostly-milkshake so steven in Future is pretty much unanimously agreed to have cptsd and while I definitely agree i think theres more to it than that.
Fear of abandonment
steven has a Massive fear of abandonment in future, and this is the major thing that signals to me that it isnt just cptsd that we're seeing.
its a recurring theme throughout future that stevens friends and family are leaving him behind. he does this with lars, sadie and the cool kids, with connie, peridot, the graduated off colours, pretty much everyone. he constantly feels like hes being abandoned because he has no use any more
His dream sequence with peridot is one of the most obvious examples of this; "I don't know how to be a friend without something to fix, but i just can do it any more. im so tired. please don't leave. don't leave."
with lars and sadie he accidentally traps them in the pink dome because he doesnt want them to leave, and he cant accept that theyre changing and moving on, especially without him being there for it or being a part of it
heck, he even names his flowers after all his friends so that he can pretend hes with them: "youre stuck in the ground arent you? not gonna fly right into space and leave me behind?"
Connie's percieved rejection is what kickstarts the mental breakdown that hes been trying to supress. To me this is very similar to emotional dysregulation in bpd, and how easy it is to assume people have abandoned you, even when thats not the case. connie told steven "not now" for his proposal, but steven emotionally reacted like she never wanted to talk to him again. even before this, the fear that she was leaving him was worrying him since she was going to college. the scene of him looking at the map and saying "thats really far." as he glows pink shows how terrified he is. he wanted the proposal and to be stevonnie so that he would have some stability and assurance that he would always be with her, but her refusal of the proposal felt like she was saying "theres a chance that i will leave you so I dont want to commit". steven even says "if we already know we're going to spend our lives together why wait?"
Favourite person
I would argue that connie is stevens Favourite Person, someone bpders rely on for emotional support and regulation, and idealise or seek attention from. Steven adores spending time with connie, he'll take any opportunity to see her, even attempting to make an excuse about dropping off a leaflet and calling her every study break. When connie is there, steven feels like he can handle anything. he quite literally wants to be a permafusion with her and not leave her side. when you have a favourite person, being away from them feels like you have to deal with all your problems by yourself, youre completely alone, and you want to talk to them pretty much always to have the reassurance that they arent leaving you. to me, this is how steven acts with connie.
Emotional Instability

I feel all rhese symptoms above are obvious in future but a lot of that can also be symptoms of cptsd, especially the chronic feelings of shame and guilt. Still I do feel like its worth pointing out that steven really does suffer from intense mood swings, they are literally called "mood swings" by blue and "outbursts" by pearl.
Disturbed patterns of thinking

the first one is one that steven does a lot, culminating in him literally transforming into a giant monster since thats how he percieves himself to be. hes convinced that "none of you know how bad i am. you think of me as some angel but im not that kid anymore. i havent learned a thing from my problems. theyve all just made me worse. im a fraud. im a monster". bpders are often described as having an "unstable sense of self" which steven definitely does. his perception of himself is completely lost without his "purpose" and he has no idea who he is or what he wants with his life. I mean he quite literally thought he was a different person for a while and coming to terms with the fact that you are not your own mom is gonna have a lasting impact on how you percieve yourself
splitting / polarised thinking
Stevens rejection of his father after he visited his grandparents house which ended in him deleting his photo from his phone felt a lot to me like splitting? obviously greg was in the wrong here for not even telling steven about his grandparents and being negligent in his parenting, but stevens insistence that gregs also terrible childhood was great actually and that greg "is just like mom" seems to me like steven, in that moment, only saw greg as a terrible person just like his mother (who he only sees negatively). the understanding that gregs childhood was awful, just in a different way, is not there and it seems like very black-and-white bpd thinking?
contrast with cptsd

the symptoms here are honestly quite similar to bpd and steven definitely struggles with them so it can be hard to tell whether it is cptsd and not bpd. still, the extreme mood swings and intense fear of abandonment specifically are really stevens major issues in future, are these are *bpd* major symptoms, not really associated with cptsd. thats why I think that he also has bpd and not just cptsd.
keep in mind i am not a psychologist lol but i tried my best. im just some guy whos been told by my psych that i probably have bpd :3
if anyone has any thoughts on this pls feel free to share id love to hear em
anyone else think steven universe has bpd or am i alone in this cruel world
#ash rambles#su#i hope i did good lol i am not a doctor! i just relate a lot and wanted to talk abt what i noticed ok ol

Spill the tea on Stevinel (just because I saw one for conniverse) And yes, I'm not on Anonymous. Because I'm a proud stevinel shipper and no one's going to stop me from loving it, also your blog is cool
And you know what? Thatās the right attitude to have! People should be free to express what they ship without shielding themselves with anonymity. I donāt blame the people that do these days - antis are fucking dangerous peopleĀ - but goddamn, people. Itās fiction.Ā
So I commend you for shipping Stevinel openly and proudly! Hard to believe itās actually considered a bold and brave move just to be open and honest about harmless preferences these days.Ā
That said, Iām sorry it took so long to get to this. I felt you deserved an epic, given how unexpectedly successful my tirade on why Connverse is a shit ship with an undeserved golden reputationĀ was...
But the truth is, even though Iām very much a Stevinel shipper, itās definitely not my OTP.
And itās veryĀ tricky for me to figure out how to spill the tea on Stevinel in a way thatās distinct from me doing the same with Stevidot.
Because, well, letās face it: these two ships, beyond being very similar in nature, have also endured identical hardships from the fandom.
All the death threats Stevinel fans get from the raging antis for daring to ship something soĀ āproblematic/immoral/wrong/not Connverseā?Ā
Stevidot fans have been treated that exact same way for years. And still are. For the exact same reasons.

Both Stevinel and Stevidot shippers are valid, but the fandom constantly turns a blind eye to Rebecca Sugarās husband who also worked on the showĀ outright saying gem x human ships are FAIR GAME.
And also turn a blind eye to the recent interview where Sugar herself stated that the gems are more like AI - a conclusion I and many others deduced ages ago just by how gems are portrayed in the show.Ā
But by god, theyāll hang on Matt Burnettās word thatĀ āgrown gemsā are a thing even though canon itself explicitly states that GEMS DONāT GROW.
Just like how despite Maya Petersen outright admittingĀ that Aroace!Peridot is just her headcanon, people treat it like the fucking gospel now.
(no offense to anyone whoās committed to that particular headcanon - I just donāt really see it with Peridot in particular and itās really fucking stupid to claim itās 100% canon when the source herself explicitly said it wasnāt)
Well, itās canon that Spinel kissedĀ Steven and he didnāt turn into dust. And Steven was already well on his way down the path of self-destruction at this point in time; he wouldāve gone monster whether this happened or not.Ā
Also, how often does a character get theĀ āheart eyes expression for just a platonicĀ love?
If there was ever a scene where Connie or Steven had heart eyes, no doubt most of the pricks would screamĀ āYES!!!! UNDENIABLE PROOF THAT THEYāRE IN LOVE!!!ā
But when itās Spinel, suddenly it doesnāt count? Really?
How convenient.
Thereās also the stupid idiots who saw the conceptual development of Spinel in that movie artbook and saw some vague color keys during a conceptual stageĀ and claimed that Spinel wasĀ āfamilyā to Steven - which of courseĀ must meanĀ ārelatedā and therefore must make Stevinel an incestuous relationship!Ā
Which is bull. Also shit. Itās already common knowledge that gems donāt work that way. She was the designated playmate for Stevenās mother. Nothing more.
Of course, most gems who come in Stevenās orbit end up being sort of a family to him.Ā
But everyone seems to have this impression that a gem being part of Stevenās family means they become additional surrogate mom figures.
And yeah no, thatās dumb and wrong. Garnet and Pearl are really the only ones Iād consider actualĀ āmom figuresā. Amethystās more of a big sister. Everyone else can vary depending on perspective, but Iāve neverĀ seen any of the other gems as anything close to a motherly figure for Steven. Any time I see shit about Lapis or Peridot being regarded asĀ āgem momsā to Steven, I laugh my ass off.Ā They are so notĀ moms or any kind of authoritative figure for Steven. Bismuth at best is more of the fun-loving aunt.
There are more roles in a family than just a paternal/maternal substitute. In fact, I believe Steven has considered ConnieĀ to be part of his family well before they hooked up in canon.
(as a side-note, I love how people who are allegedly SO squicked out by age gap ships totally pardon Connverse - you guys realize Connie was 14Ā in Future, right? Possibly 15 depending on the time scale? Thereās gonna be a point in the relative near future where Steven is 18 and Connie isnāt - why donāt I hear you assholes angst about that āatrocityā, huh?)
I honestly do consider the CG B-Team as part of Stevenās family, but more in a loose sense. But by that same token, I consider Connie as part of the family in a similar manner.Ā
Especially since Spinel was shoved off to live with the Diamonds after the movie - and the Diamonds themselves have a very fucked-upĀ relationship among themselves to the point where I honestly hesitate to put a familial label on it at all - itās extraĀ stupid to try and paint Stevinel as something with incestuous overtones when it clearly doesnāt.Ā

Spinel does happen to be a perfect representative of how full of shitĀ antis are about age gaps, though.Ā
While Peridotās age has always been left vague, we know she canāt be 5K or older due to being an Era 2 gem. Due to her utter lack of knowledge of Era 1 events (or being completely sold on the Diamondsā propaganda) and her general inexperience with her own equipment - as well as her ability to quickly adapt to Earth - I always headcanoned Peridot as being especially young. Like, younger-than-Steven young.Ā
Mostly because Periās attitude reeks of Gen ZĀ - also because itād be nice for a change to have a gem who isnātĀ thousands of years old like literally every other noteworthy gem in the show. We need a representative of gemkind who hasnātĀ been around for ages.Ā
Of course, Spinelās backstory proves that even if they went the boring route and made Peridot thousands of years old just like everybody else, it wouldnāt really mean much of anything. Sheād be no less of a valid romantic option for Steven regardless of age.
Spinel is several thousands of years old, and the movie explicitly shows us what exactly that amounts to for a gem.
As I mentioned earlier, Sugar sees the gems more like AI. Spinel remaining in one spot for several millennnia, not moving an inch, not speaking to anyone, not seeing anything other than a gradually-deteriorating garden... yeah, and somehow, despite all that, Spinelās still very childlike per her design. She had literally no room to mature or accrue life experience: Pink Diamond basically hit the pause button on her entire life.
Even though sheās several thousands of years old, through no fault of her own, Spinelās mindset remained unchanged. It wasnāt until Steven inadvertently came into her life that she became twisted - understandably so after finally realizing sheād been abandoned by Pink.Ā

But she still didnāt completely lose her true self. Spinel realized on her own that Steven didnāt deserve to suffer just because his mom was a negligent asshole. She also came to understand on her own that unlike Pink, Steven truly cared for her no matter what shit she threw his way.Ā
Steven could give Spinel the care and attention she always deserved; something Pink totally denied her while deceiving her into wasting away with her abandoned playground. He could be the one to give Spinel the love she always deserved but was either denied or manipulated into believing she got.Ā
Honestly, this is more than enough to warrant building something more between these two.Ā
The age gap is irrelevant. The two have chemistry. They arenāt related.
(and honestly, this is fiction - these details are largely irrelevant in fiction anyway. Iām only bringing it up because it doesnāt take much research to find that every label the antis put on Stevinel is complete inaccurate Diamond propaganda bullshit)
Stevinel is FINE. Let people ship it if they want to!

Um... is that good enough?
Honestly, Iām not gonna lie: Stevinelās pretty goddamned popular; so much that Iām a bit jealous of it. I enjoy the ship a lot, but Iāve been keeping it at arms-length all this time. Iām looking forward to when I can write my own brand of Stevinel interaction when I get to introduce her in my series, but thatās still a while to go.Ā
Also, thereās almost zeroĀ Peridot/Spinel material, let alone my Peridot/Steven/Spinel OT3. And Stevidot material is still hard to come by; Iām noticing Stevinelās still quite a bit easier to find by comparison.Ā
So in a way, I feel many other unpopular ships deserve some tea-spilling sooner than Stevinel because Stevinel at least still has a sizable fanbase. Same canāt really be said for a lot of similar ships here...
A lot of this can apply to other Steven x gem ships, honestly.Ā
But I guess I havenāt been showing Stevinel much proper love due to my devotion to my superior SU-AU. I can only hope I can soon reach a point where I can have GA Spinel react to Steven, since their dynamic will be significantly different.
(and then one day Iāll finally make the Peridot/Steven/Spinel OT3 fic!!)
Until then, I can only hope I did Stevinel some justice here!

āThis is another reason most of future lost rightsā May we hear your thoughts?
Now that I have officially finished watching the original Steven Universe series, I have many Thoughts about the continuation. Prepare for some detailed salty takes.
-- My biggest gripe is that Garnet, Pearl, and Amethyst lose pretty much all of the emotional intelligence they gain in the original series to maximize Stevenās suffering.
So like the gifset that prompted this ask for example, where Garnet realizes sheās hurt Steven with her future vision and apologizes? Makes her reaction in Future to realizing she hurt Steven again OOC. The OG series also teaches us and Steven that Garnet canāt see definites, because thereās so many possibilities, and the futureās always changing, and the future can always be changed. So her line about how there was no universe where Steven didnāt propose to Connie as her reason for why she didnāt try to stop him, is bullshit.
The Volleyball episode gives away that Steven is clearly not OK, and Pearl does nothing about it. Neurotic, mother hen, letās make a plan Pearl does not ask Steven if heās alright and makes 0 plans to train him to control his new alarming powers. Pearl, who now has a better sense of how trauma works because she has it herself, who we have seen in the OG series suspect Steven is dealing with some post traumatic stress after being taken to Homeworld and reach out to him about it, does not in Future reach out to him after he expresses blatant distress over having to deal with more of his momās problems. Iām supposed to believe this? Seriously?
And Amethyst? I think sheās the most obvious offender since a big part of her arc in the end of the OG series is emotional maturity.Thereās a whole episode dedicated to her putting Stevenās feelings first. Acknowledging the pressure heās been under and the shit thatās been dumped on him for years and the horror of finding out Rose was a Diamond which makes him a Diamond and recognizing that heās not OK. He canāt be. Learning that Steven deals by distracting himself with other tasks and people. But sure when Amethyst notices Steven throwing himself into his work in Future, her response is just āWhen did you become such a prick?ā Yeah. Totally sounds right.
There is a whole arc about these two emotionally connecting through their insecurities and the strength they find in having each other to relate to and rely on and confide in. It is one of my favorites in the entire story. And it is totally thrown out a window in Future. If no one else youād think at least Amethyst would reach out to Steven in Future before he spirals, but no.
Literally itās like the entire Gem trioās emotionally sent back to square 1 and their perceptionās lowered to 0, which is lower than it was to begin with, because it was the only way Future could work. Seriously, after Prickly Pair nobody tries to talk to Steven? Nobody insists they need to talk about what the fuck just happened? Nobody goes after Steven when he runs away, twice?! Once after crashing the van with his dad inside, in which he disappears for 3 whole days. Another time after talking about how they canāt help him anymore, which is really alarming! Then they all just let Steven go when he returns from Homeworld glowing with Diamond pupils?! are you kidding me, are you fUcking KidDing me am I supposed to believe theyāre even his friends in Future what the fuck I hate thisĀ
-- And framing everything like the Gems have never been there for Steven? Hate that too. Thereās countless episodes in the OG series proving thatās not true. Steven himself says itās not. At one point thatās what keeps him from literally falling from the sky.
āI just need something that makes me happy, something I can always depend on to cheer me up. My guys. They spent all night out here just to keep me company. No matter how much I mess up theyāll be there to help me.ā
Itās the biggest reason why the Gems are foils to the Diamonds!
āRemember back when I was little and maybe kind of annoying, and I couldnāt come along on adventures? You guys would still drop everything to hang out with me.ā
Garnet, Pearl, and Amethyst begin kind of oblivious and inattentive, but they donāt stay that way. They are always learning, and apologizing, and changing when they realize their behavior is harmful. To themselves, to the team as a whole, to strangers, to Steven. They do very early in the series start setting work aside to spend time with him. Together breakfast (which ends up meaning so much to Garnet that it becomes her wedding cake), mini golf, cards, board games, movies, the arcade, the amusement park. Theyāre Stevenās band in beach-a-palooza. They become, not only better caretakers, but his friends.
A team. For the main Crystal Gem quartet so much of the show is about them learning to become a team by learning to understand each other and helping each other grow, leading to a stunning display of teamwork in the finale with Garnet, Pearl, Amethyst, and Steven all fusing together into one kickass warrior, Obsidian. Itās so perfect that this didnāt, couldnāt, happen until the end, after all that development. Itās so satisfying.
-- Like I mentioned before, thereās no reason why the Gems, including the others like Peridot, Lapis, and Bismuth, wouldnāt try to help Steven learn to control his new powers in Future.
-- A lot of the, uh, conflicts Steven faces in Future also feel ignorant to the OG series.
Steven in future: i just feel like i canāt make mistakes in front of you guys and cant be honest cause its mean and i have to be nice and perfect :(
Steven in og series: oh geez I really messed up sorry guys; [feels like the worst Crystal Gem cause heās always fucking up]; (Garnet: Youāre making Pearl very upset) āIM very upset!ā; āWhat Rose wanted--ARGH! What about what I want?! Iām sick of you always lying to me!ā; āHomeās been awful! Hereās been awful! Everyoneās been acting awful too!ā
Steven in future: idk how to be a friend to someone whoās not a miserable sad sack with no direction in life
Connie: hey what the fuck
What was the point of all the townie episodes if weāre going to act like Steven never connected with the human part of his life why would the og show bounce between gem eps and human eps if not to show how Steven connects with both worlds adāg;ajfgjfagjLAFKJS
Steven in future: why didnāt my meddling advice work? this has never happened before. am i losing my touch. who am i
Og Steven, multiple times: aaAAAAAH I SHOULD NOT HAVE MEDDLED AND PUSHED I MADE THINGS WORSE
- Why wasnāt Mindful Education revisited? Stevenās a fusion technically, right, so if heās feeling, you know, deeply conflicted about his 2 halves, doesnāt that mean heās out of harmony? Thereās a way for 2 halves of a fusion to communicate through meditation and address whatās causing the imbalance, but I guess that wouldāve solved Stevenās problem too easily. Thatās the only reason Connieās kept out of Future for so long too, right? Ugh. Never mind the fact that Mindful Ed taught Steven that itās really important to face upsetting thoughts and feelings and traumas before they tear him apart. But whatever! what ever
- God this isnāt even half of the issues I now have with Future, but I donāt want this post to be 8 miles longer than it already is. Basically I feel like Future does a disservice to the characters and story being told in the original series, which I am very fond of now. It reminds me of an OOC fanfiction. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
I really do not want to argue about this. Itās just my opinion. Iām kind of venting. If you agree, great. If you donāt, please keep scrolling. Thanks.

Sanders Sides as types of gems in Steven Universse
Patton as a blue spinel with a belly button gemstone
Spinels are made to be loving companions who are childish and silly which I feel really fits Patton, as the inner child who keeps Thomasā childhood spirit alive. Spinels are extroverted, hyper, innocent and easily excitable, much like Patton. They are also shown to be protective and sometimes a little clingy over their loved ones. Also heād totally make a bunch of puns to make people laugh. Patās heart-shaped gemstone would be on his belly button like Steven, Rose/Pink Diamond and Navy Ruby. The placement of the gem reflects their personality and belly button gems are shown to be very emotionally driven, friendly, loving, caring and willing to stand up for what they believe is right, to the point where they sometimes forget to look after themselves and can ignore/repress their own negative feelings, which I feel are traits we see in Patton.
Janus as a yellow zircon with a right hand gemstone
The zircons are the lawyers and justice-bringers of gem society, which fits Janusā role in the courtroom. He would be a formidable lawyer, maybe one of the ones we see campaigning to be the new gem leader in homeworld bound. I feel like heād be similar to the zircon defending Steven, who lashes out at the diamonds during the trial, but with even more sass and resent for all the hierarchies and would openly hate how gem society is run. Heād probably become a spy for the crystal gems. I think Janusā gem would be on the palm of his right hand, like Sapphire in the series. Right-palm gems are shown to be very cool and composed and donāt let their feelings show, meaning they can come off as cold, which I feel is similar to Janusā personality. But deep down, they really care about those close to them and can let their guard down and be silly sometimes. Just... zircon Janus.
Virgil as a lapis lazuli with an upper back gemstone
All the lapis lazulis we meet in the series seem to be introverted, cynical and kinda sarcastic, which are definitely traits we see in Virgil. They are terraforming gems who can fly and mostly work alone or in small groups. They have water manipulation abilities and are extremely strong and powerful, which I feel would be really cool for Virgil. The upper back gemstone placement is the same as the main Lapis in SU who becomes a crystal gem, who really reminds me of Virgil. Those with gems on their back often have their guard up and have problems trusting people. They tend to hold grudges and have difficulty letting go of past troubles, which are traits we really see in Virgil, especially in regards to Janus and his past with the others. But they are also creative individuals who will be there for you when it counts
Logan as a sapphire with a forehead gemstone
Sapphires are rare and can predict the future through seeing different paths of reality and determining the most likely. They are diplomatic gems, created to be providers of knowledge and guidance in gem society which I feel fits Logan. Sapphires are very wise and intuitive and mostly calm and collected, just like Logan. His gem would be on his forehead, like Pearl and Peridot. Forehead gems have extremely logical and rational personalities and are perfectionists. They are analytical and rely on knowledge. They seem to be emotionally detached but their emotions often show themselves in quick, intense outbursts, a lot like Logan is shown to do.
The twins as quartz soldiers with chest gemstones
I had trouble deciding for the twins but I think being brave, high-ranking quartz soldiers would be great for them. Roman would be a cherry quartz and Remus a type of green quartz (we donāt see any of those in SU but Iām pretty sure they exist). Quartz soldiers are not only strong and determined but like all gems they can summon a weapon of their choice (perfect opportunity for Roman to have his sword and Remus to have his mace and other weapons.) I chose to put their gemstones on their chest similar to Amethyst and Bismuth in SU. These gems are extremely impulsive and are often shown to lash out with a complete lack of filter, which both twins do, although Remus notably more often. They are also shown to sometimes have self-worth issues (especially Amethyst) which is definitely something we see in both twins. But above all they are passionate, determined, inspiring and sometimes dramatic gems who fight for what they believe in and they are also shown to be entertaining and fun-loving companions. It took me a while to get there but I really like the choices I made for the twins!
Bonus- hereās what their gemstones would look like irl (click on Virgilās to see it fully)

Patton Janus Logan
Virgil Roman Remus
I put a lot of thought into this and Iām really proud of it, however this is just my opinion and Iād love to hear othersā thoughts on this :D

sorry if this is rude but do you have any advice for designing gems??
oh no youāre fine, people ask me this all the time ! warning for long post bc pictures ! i think these are the most important things to consider when designing gems:
shapes - the general gist is that circles = friendly, squares = stable, triangles = dynamic. this goes for pretty much everything like body shape, face, hair, & clothing , and is supposed to tell you about a character without having to actually say it.
colour - of course we know gems can come in different colours that are actually appropriate for their gem types but we also know that those colours can actually tell you what diamond they serve under, which diamonds made them, and what type of job they might have -Ā āAccording to Rebecca Sugar, blue Gems like Sapphire are created with diplomatic skills.[19] And later in the Ultimate Crossover Fundraiser that blue Gems can be introspective and a little judgmental.[20]Ā She also states that orange Gems are leaner on the active side as they take action.[21]ā
also, values can draw attention to important areas like jasperās light eyes
clothing - incredibly important; like shapes, they can tell you a lot about a character as well as the way they think & their role in the show. cotton candy garnet is something entirely new, CYM garnet is more than the two of them; CG peridot takes elements from pearl amethyst & garnet but still makes it her own because sheās proud to be a crystal gem!!!
purpose - homeworld gems are created for a reason & will dress for the part. itās kinda unrealistic to have a warrior wearing skirts and such on a battlefield bc theyād get tripped up in all that loose fabric right? and pearls resemble their owners in some way (not copying their looks exactly! many forget this) & have sheer clothing details, meant to be fancy and look pretty, etc. but typically rebels will dress the way they want to because thats how it is, baybeeeee
by no means is this a definitiveĀ āthis is what you SHOULD doā , just that taking cues from canon examples help me best, but feel free to experiment around with different things, especially when you make non-canon gem types
#ask#phantasmagoric-litch#gemsona help#??? i suppose#i remember people telling me they thought like scapolite and whoever else were canon characters so for me that's mission accomplished#stares forlornly at 2018 me saying i'll make a gemsona design guide
