Masterlist | Miah’s Comeback Sleepover

Kaz smiled as the lock finally made the long-awaited clicking sound, opening with no problem. Amateurs. They think their outer protections are so strong that they don’t need more than a basic lock.

Wylan was behind him, looking nervous as always, but one thing he’s good at is spotting the valuable items in a merchant’s home, so Kaz asked (read: forced) him to come.

“Alright, valuable things only, we have ten minutes to get everything and get out before the guards make their rounds so let’s speed this u-”

He was cut off by a giggle coming from the centre of the room.

“Too late, Brekker. Better luck next time.”

She waved cheekily and tugged on the rope around her waist, immediately being pulled up by one of her girls, leaving him grasping at nothing but wind.

A quick sweep of the house told him it was devoid of any and all valuables and he stomped out of there angrily.

The trip back to the Slat was a tense one. The crows knew better than to say anything, especially Nina, given that she’d come so close to joining their crew.

The Hearts were -as their name implied- a group of Heartrenders that made their home in the Barrel after the Ravkan civil war. They’re all women, all insanely good at their job, and all free of any indentures whatsoever. Their leader, commonly known as the Queen of Hearts, was the biggest pain in Kaz’s ass.

Case in point, she wasn’t even supposed to be here. According to the intel they’d gathered, the whole crew was supposed to be away on a job in the warehouse district, far, far away from the Merchant he was about to rob. And the worst part is, that’s not even the first time it’d happened! It seems like whatever he does, he can’t predict anything about that woman and it’s starting to get on his nerves.

He went straight to his office, not bothering with socialising or torturing the idiot who fed him false info (he’ll give him the night to get out of the Barrel, or else) and let the door slam shut behind him.

“Fuck that pretentious little Heartrender.”

He said, under his breath, as he took off his coat.

“I’d tell you to take me to dinner first, but that’s such a good offer that I might skim over the specifics.”

Well of fucking course.

He turned around. She was sitting in his chair, twirling one of her knives in her hand, a gift from a certain Suli girl.

“You’re insufferable, you know that?”

She only grinned.

“You’re just mad that I’m ahead on this month’s betting pool. Five successful heists to your four, better get say goodbye to that De Kappel, cause it isn’t gonna be yours for much longer.”

He groaned and ran a hand through his hair.

“You’re not supposed to be ahead! I planned everything meticulously, spent hours on those plans, and somehow you still won.”

He sat in the chair in front of her, the one usually reserved for anyone he was doing business with, or more accurately, anyone he was financially destroying. The irony of this was not lost on him.

“Mhm, valid effort on your part, but you forgot to account for one thing.”

He lifted his brow as she set her elbows on the desk, resting her head on her crossed hands.

“And what’s that?”

She smiled.

“Me, obviously.”

She got up and rounded the desk, leaning against the front at barely a foot’s distance from him.

“You see, that’s your mistake. You plan everything. You research, and predict, and plan, and have so much confidence in your plan that you forget to leave space for the unpredictable. AKA me.”

He snorts.

“I always leave space for you. I literally had to buy a bigger bed for you, if that’s not making space, I don’t know what is.”

She rolled her eyes as he took off his gloves.

“How do you think they’ll react?”

He shrugged.

“Well, I don’t think Inej knows all the details, but she knows that we’re friendly so it shouldn’t surprise her…”

She spluttered.

“Friendly? Oh, we’re friendly, now?”

He smirked.

“Just a little taste of revenge, my love, don’t worry. Moving on, Jesper will be pissed that he didn’t know but he’ll get over it. Wylan will most likely ask you all kinds of questions, the curious idiot. Matthias will have a heart attack, which should be fun to watch, I assume that at least half of my whiskey shelf will be gone by the next morning. And Nina… Well… Nina’ll have a field day, that’s for sure.”

She smiled happily and he took her hand, intertwining their fingers. Sometimes it still surprised him that they’d managed to do so much progress in just two years.

“I’ll finally have Nina Zenik on my crew.”

He hummed.

“You’ll also have men on your crew.”

She shrugged.

“You handle the boys, I’ll take care of my girls.”

He pulled her in until she was standing between his legs and hugged her thighs, resting his head on her stomach. Her hands immediately came to rest on his head and he felt a calm wash over him.

“I think they’ll mostly be pissed at themselves for not figuring it out. I mean, two years, really? And I’ve been beating your ass at betting pools for like a year and a half, if I was anyone else, I’d be dead.”

He smiled against her stomach.

“They’ll be too busy being happy to have another boss to care about the specifics, especially cause your girls are gonna sing you high praises. Soon enough, they’ll start worshipping the ground you walk on.”

She pulled his head up until they were looking into each other’s eyes.

“Well, I am a Queen, after all.”

He nodded.

“The Queen of Hearts that managed to steal my cold, dead one. Does that make me your King?”

She scratched at his scalp and he fought against the urge to close his eyes.

“Obviously. I can’t be a Queen and have a bastard for a husband. You’ve officially been promoted.”

He looked at the ring on her finger, stolen on the last job the two did together, secretly, of course.

“Shouldn’t I only be promoted once we marry?”

She shrugged.

“Po-tay-toh, po-tah-to. Either way, you went from bastard to King, be happy.”

Her smile was radiant, happy to finally come clean with their relationship, and Kaz felt himself be taken on that happy high.

“You know, it’s quite ironic, this thing.”

She frowned.

“What do you mean?”

He grinned at her.

“I pride myself in meticulously planning every single aspect of my life, yet I fell in love with the most unpredictable little brat in the world. Very ironic indeed.”

She bent down until their faces were almost touching, giving him space, always giving him space in case it was suddenly too much, then kissed him softly. It felt like home, like safety, like belonging.

“Call me a brat again and I’ll give you a boner every time you’re negotiating something.”

Yes! I am not done with Kima. I’m fiddling with a WIP that’s been giving me trouble on what happens when Bahram and Miah leave for their date.

kimchi bokkeumbap; kimchi fried rice

Yuuuuuuuuuuuuuum. Ok, so ngl I don’t know too much about Korean food and this was the first Korean dish I ever made but it was SOOOO tasty and comforting. Definitely backing a further exploration of Korean dishes. This all came about because one of my very kind and generous classmates made our whole class kimchi and even sealed it in this super profesh packaging with the ziplock and everything. This time round, I felt like rather than just eating the kimchi straight out the pack which is always 100% the most tempting thing to do, I would commit to the kimchi long haul and actually cook something with it. I was super tired though, so thought kimchi fried rice would be a solid compromise between cooking and not having to stretch myself tooooo much.

I had to buy gochujang, which is maybe the most intriguing and possibly even my new favourite ingredient as it blends the spiciness of red chilis with the salty-savoury tanginess of fermented soybean, glutinous rice and salt. In its final and ~perfected~ state, it has this spicy earthiness that bears some semblance to sriracha but with BASS. and not simply... just BASS... but BASS FOR DAYS. I wasn’t actually going to buy the gochujang though because I thought I would have to go to Loo Fung which is MISSIONS and as I said, I was tired. HOWEVER, HOWEVER, I got off the bus from work on Barking Road and had to go shops to get some milk and just chanced upon Miah’s Oriental Foods, a specialist shop literally 5 mins away from home that sells anything and everything I could ever need and for pretty cheap! I actually found the variety of things I could buy - and so locally - completely shocking. This shop is amazing. Actually, the cluster of shops on this part of Barking Road (where the giant specialist Doctor Who shop is lol) are all pretty sick and unique. In addition to shops already mentioned, there’s Newham Bookshop, the Q in Food Centre which is one of those standard international (mostly Turkish/East European) supermarkets that also sell fresh Turkish bread/pastries, Boleyn Cinema (which exclusively plays South Asian cinema), the Boleyn Tavern (which was apparently visited by Gandhi in 1931 and is currently being refurbished with guidance from the Victorian Society, which is very awesome) and many more, with the World Cup Sculpture just a few minutes away. And that’s just a small bit of Barking Road... let alone the rest of it and the phenomena that is Green Street next to it. Big up Newham!

Anyway, back to the bokkeumbap - so this was one night I devoted to just chilling, I realised that I couldn’t remember the last time I had ~ just chilled ~ so I decided to FINALLY watch Parasite (and also after that like... a seasons worth of The Good Place where at some point I sadly passed out) so this dish had to be good. I had to make the rice from scratch which unfortunately does not suit fried rice very well, as it’s best if the rice is a bit stale and dry but oh well. The recipe I used advised me to massage the rice with sesame oil, so that was ... definitely an experience. I’m sure you can picture my impatient ass massaging this rice that is literally burning me, my hands an oily rice-laden scalding mess. But alas, it’s like they say, no bees no honey. (I actually don’t think I have ever heard anyone say that)

Another interesting step was having to for real juice the kimchi. As you want to be able to brown the kimchi cabbage (like onions), the best thing to do is juice it first and then pour the juices on the rice later. So yeah, litch had to juice 1/4 cups worth of kimchi juice from the kimchi. This is what it looked like. Very nice. To this, I mixed in the gochujang and soy sauce.

The cooking process begins when you take the sorry looking lifeless kimchi that U literally CHOKED to death and start frying it in the pot. Like you can actually see the green of the cabbage again which is like a weird modern-day-consumer-divorced-from-the-realities-of-production type of reality shock like o u were an actual vegetable before you became kimchi, hello....... (Obviously in some part of my brain, I knew kimchi was made of cabbage but sometimes you don’t properly deep it... like you deep it on surface level, but not properly because like many products you buy, you didn’t play any part in the production process, you just bought it ready made from the shop so there’s just a disconnect... the dumbest way this played out was me googling ‘kimchi and cabbage fried rice recipe’ because I wanted to use the cabbage in my fridge....but obviously nothing come up because who else would be such an IDIOT SANDWICH ? No one. that’s who.)

After the kimchi turns that sexy brown à la Maillard, you kinda do your toppings thing. I added mushrooms of course, I think I have actually added mushrooms to every (non-South Asian) recipe I have cooked you know... and if I haven’t I bet I wanted to. I also added tofu, spring onions and toasted seaweed, and then at the end I added toasted sesame seeds. Then in goes the rice and after that, the kimchi juice-gochujang alliance. The medley of smells from the kimchi, gochujang and sesame oil all frying so intensely together was a really rewarding experience. I think I have always felt so insecure about cooking out of my comfort zone, and especially East Asian foods because the methods and ingredients are so different and a bit confusing, but I am beginning to realise that........... it’s really not that deep and I can just figure it out and learn as I go. And there is literally a wealth of really useful websites. And youtube. duh. 

So, on the first day I cooked it I decided to eat it with fried egg. The bokkeumbap came out a little bit mushy because the rice was too fresh I think.

The next day however, upon reading a tip about how some of the rice should be slightly burnt, when I refried the leftovers I let it sit for a few minutes on a medium heat so the bottom of the rice would burn like some Korean tahdig. It was an excellent tip and switched up the texture in a very big way. I also fried an egg into the mix. I think the fried egg with the yolk oozing into the rice works best though, that oooooooooze, how can you beat that ooze? In Japan, at an izakaya a friend took me to, they literally gave us egg yolk to dip meat into. It was ridiculous. (in the best possible way). 

So, all in all, it was really really tasty. I especially loved how the flavours of the gochujang played with and complemented those of the sesame oil, both quite distinct and strong flavours coming through heightening the umami thus making this dish super moreish. I thought that the flavours of the kimchi could have been a bit stronger, and after looking into it, I learnt that when cooking kimchi you should allow it to mature for at least 2-3 months as the flavours become deeper with time. I realised afterwards that the kimchi my classmate had made us was only about a week old! But it was still very delicious. I think my next kimchi adventure will be a kimchi + tofu hot pot...... so stay choooooned.

Foreigners Not Happy With The U.S. Travel Ban

International relations have been on the edge ever since the U.S. announced its travel ban that mostly affects citizens from most Middle East countries. President Trump delivered his promise of taking the country’s safety and security seriously by limiting the numbers of foreigners living in America, especially the ones coming from nations with known terroristic activities – in short, Muslims.

The travel ban created such a buzz throughout the globe and people can’t help but voice out their own opinions. Overall, people are not happy and it is hurting U.S. international relations. Not only that, it also has a negative effect on a lot of U.S. tourism.

Foreign tourism to the United States, which supports millions of American jobs, is slowing, possibly because President Donald Trump sought controversial travel restrictions on visitors from some Muslim majority nations. Online searches for flights to the United States are down in most major nations, but not just those hit by restrictions.

The travel restrictions sparked demonstrations, critical press coverage and a flurry of lawsuits. A petition drive gathered thousands of signatures in support of British citizen and mathematics teacher Juhel Miah, who was removed from a U.S.-bound plane as he was escorting British students on a school trip to America.

And truth be told, the damage has been done no matter how noble Trump’s intention may be and its aftermath can be felt over the years to come.

Pace University Professor Andrew Coggins, who researches travel issues, said the Trump administration's push to restrict immigration is making some foreign tourists and students wary of visiting out of concern they might face bigotry and prejudice. He said such worries mean New York City alone will see hundreds of thousands fewer visitors and lose millions of dollars in revenue. Professor Coggins said efforts to revise the restrictions are pointless.

“The damage has been done. I think the resentment is there. It has been generated and it is not going to go away that fast,” he said.

The first travel ban may have been blocked in court but it will not stop President Trump from realizing his goals.

After the first travel ban was blocked in court, President Trump signed a new executive order last week temporarily blocking travel to the U.S. from countries he said pose a high terrorism risk. The new order bars travel to the U.S. for 90 days from six predominantly Muslim countries — Sudan, Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia and Yemen according to the Department of Homeland Security.

The new list excludes Iraq, which was included on the original list of countries announced in January.

While the new administration is determined to prevent the access of foreigners from high-risk countries into the U.S., the threat is also palpable among citizens of the said banned nations who are already living in the United States. They may end up deported back home. Some of them seek refuge in the neighboring country of Canada while tension is still high in America.

Refugees in fear of detainment and deportation are fleeing the US across its northern border with Canada at an increased rate even as courts block the Trump administration’s travel ban, according to refugee support groups and the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA).

Mukhtar Idhow, executive director of the Organization for Refugee and Immigrant Success (ORIS), a New Hampshire-based group that assists asylum seekers find work and teaches them gardening, told Al Jazeera that the Trump administration's two attempts to place a ban on Muslims from entering the US have left the refugee community questioning their place in the country.

"The US was once a place of opportunity for immigrants and refugees where all races, religions and nationalities were accepted," Idhow, himself a refugee from Somalia, continued. "Now, we aren’t sure what will happen."

It is hard to tell what the next few years in America will be like under the Trump administration. It is very likely that bridges will be burned and more tension will be felt both in and out of the country.

But for now, maybe we should give the new president a chance. He only wants the best for our country and our people. If only he is guided on how to become a good president at the least to spare us from all these worries, it will definitely be appreciated by all. President Trump should always remember that he is now the leader of a powerful nation and everything he says or does will reflect America in general.

even though this was originally supposed to be a one-shot with only tom and yn, i've been loving the banter between all the characters, and just creating that little family. it's not something i see too often in reader inserts (maybe i'm just looking in the wrong place haha) but it's just so cute, the domesticity-😍😍😍

and yeah, i had to include as many of my favourite things and current obsessions, so i needed to establish a world where larry were out and proud and 1d was together, rant about taylor's songs, supernatural, baking impossible (which is an awesome, 10/10, would recommend)

also yes, i am indeed a man u fan. fun fact: it started cause harry and louis liked the team, and cause one of the players from my favourite portuguese team (bruno fernandes) left for man u, but then i found out they were were called the red DEVILS and i was like yeah, uh huh, i choose YOU
