Despite all your egregious encounters with him, you still flushed when seeing his bare-chested body. His formalwear might be different from his usual black T-shirt and white lab coat, but he hadn't really changed. He was still fit and subtly edgy with the designs that swirled around his chiseled upper body.
Amid the tattooed tapestry, your gaze once again became drawn by the inked phoenix that rose victoriously from ashes, a symbol that seemed like a parallel to Toji himself. Resilient. Indestructible. Enduring. Both confronting and overcoming challenges, standing stronger and more determined despite their struggles. Each feather branded across his torso held wordless stories about not only his triumphs but also his scars.
âPrincess likes what she sees?â
Toji's sudden interjection surprised you. Fuck, he's caught me staring.
After you ogled at his body for too long, the man had naturally taken note, andâwith you, of courseâhe simply had to tease.
"Your tattoos suit you," you had been forced to admit. Not that you lied.
In response, his green eyes held a gentle glister that contrasted with his animalistic actions mere moments ago. "Thatâs cute. Thank you."
He reached over your shoulder for a tissue and dabbed at your collarbone.
"What are you doing?"
"Cleaning you up," answered Toji promptly. With the napkin, he soaked up sins, wiping away at the unholy mixture between sweat, spit, and semen as though they never tainted your perfect body in the first place. "That's the least I can do."
He worked in silence, slightly hunched in his seat, the scattered light from the above chandelier casting sharp shadows over his angular face. Wisps of jet-black hair framed his temples as he hung his head in focus, his breathing turning steady. Toji looked so normal, like he wasn't some sex therapist or some important corporate executive or an heir to a multi-billion fortune.
In this one, singular moment, Toji was just...Toji.
"Why are you doing this?" you asked suddenly.
"Doing what?" Mistakenly, he assumed you referred to how he sought another napkin, this time to wipe at the trickle that ran like white lava down your thighs. âWe made a mess."
"No, not that. Why did you become my therapist?" Of course, you did not forget your first encounter with Dr. Fushiguro, particularly how Toji ripped your new patient form to literal shreds the moment he noticed your last name. âYou could've kicked me out of your office that day and left me miserable, but you didn't. Why?"
He slowed in his motions and his hot breath skimmed over your upper lip.
Then, he smiled faintly. "Can I abstain?"
This was his hint that the answer wouldnât be something you liked.
"No." You still wanted to know. "Tell me, please."
Despite your reassurance, he seemed reluctant, his jaw working as he trapped his tongue piercing between his teeth.
"Because you were tooâŠinnocent," Toji eventually admitted. He sounded earnest, but he gave you a cautious glance like he wanted to gauge your reaction. "A pretty lady coming to see Toji Fushiguro because his little cousin Naoya Zenin couldn't please you properly? Clearly, you've never had a proper fuck. I wanted to completely ruin you, baby. I wanted to use you. And, shit, that pussy made me want to keep you for myself forever. Sure, I also had a two-timing ex, but who cares about my little cousin's mistress when I had his wife in front of me?"
Even though you braced for a brutally honest response, hearing his words firsthand stung.
Yes, you were naĂŻve back then. However, to hear your closest confidant admit his initial, manipulative motives jabbed at your sensitive heart.
From your husband to your therapist, you were constantly a pawn on another person's chessboard. Yet, the worst part was that you didn't notice the game until much later.
"I am sorry," Toji started again. Perceptive as usual, he noticed how your mood suddenly soured. "I had all these shitty intentions because Naoya fucked me over, so I wanted to take my anger out on you. But, when I realized that youâre just an oblivious puppet in his play, I wanted him to realize that he was mistreating you, and," one long exhale, "most importantly, I truly did want to help you."
Mulling over his words carefully, you sank your face into his shoulder. "Are you just saying that to make me feel better?"
âNo, I am being honest," and the dark green in his eyes reflected that. "I didn't expect to ever see you again after our first session. Thought you got scared off for good until you called me to book another appointment. Honestly, at that point, people suspected you to be Naoyaâs lap-bitch and spy. Hope that explains the shitty attitudes from the other therapists and my son." Toji flicked the dirty tissue into the wastebasket. "I defended you, though, if that means anything. I thought you were nice and entertaining and, as I've pointed out numerous times, that you deserved better. What I didn't think was how I would end up bringing you into," and he motioned around with his head, "all of this.â
Breathing in slowly, you took in the man's heavy bergamot scent and allowed his warmth to anchor you.
âSo, how do you plan to use me now?â
Among your incessant inquiries, this question must be the most pointed.
Toji, realizing this, gazed ahead. Momentarily, you wondered where his thoughts had wandered off to this time, his focus on the ceiling sharpening for a moment before he reverted his attention back.
"There is no plan to âuseâ you, sweetheart. Because you mean a lot to me," he still responded with great conviction. "You are cherished."
Beneath the rough edges in his features laid a softnessâa softness that you started to become familiar withâas he brought his hands to your hip.
âLive a happy life without Naoya," he added eventually. "You don't need me and the other therapists anymore. Only brokenhearted and anguished people are our clients, so forgetting about us should be easy."
Was it wrong to feel even more hurt when you heard that?
Literally one moment ago, Toji was telling you how much you meant to him. Now, he was telling you to go?
"Client or not, I thought we were friends. You even told me once that I'm somebody special."
âYou are," he responded matter-of-factly. "You are very special. Which is why I am not going to force you to hang around or anything. That way you donât think anyone is âusingâ you. You're young and capable, and I want you to live your life as you wish.â Then, his voice became uncharacteristically soft. âBecause I care about you.â
As nonchalant as he tried to come off, Toji also sounded so...broken.
Plenty of peopleâplenty of womenâcame in and out of Toji's life. Megumi had said so himself, admitting that his father used to 'sleep around a bunch' after his biological mother passed.
Since then, Toji had probably gotten used to how the women he encountered only wanted him for his name, his wallet, orâyes, to put things bluntlyâhis dick. Tsumiki's mom would be the best and most recent example.
But, you wanted to heal Toji as much as Toji had healed you.
"There's something Megumi told me the first time I stayed over at your apartment," you began suddenly.
Toji arched a brow, the tendons by his neck taut. "Is that so?" Knowing his angsty son, he sounded curious but moreso concerned. "Like what?"
'Are you going to marry my dad?'
No, you would die from embarrassment before you could admit that.
"Megumi told me about what happened to his mom, your first wife."
"Ah." Beneath you, Toji tensed up. His tongue darted over his scar like he wanted to continue, but no words came out.
So, he stopped and waited for you to continue.
"I...am really sorry to hear about what happened to her."
In the end, Toji tilted his head, a small but obviously sad smile playing on his lips.
"That's years ago." He tried to sound like losing his first wife in a freak accident didn't haunt him anymore, but you knew that the catastrophe still did.
"Well, Megumi also told me about what your relationships with other women were like since then," you resumed. "Particularly about your second wife."
This time, you truly stumped him. "I see."
"Unlike her, I am not going anywhere," you asserted and tightened your hold around him. "No one is forcing that decision upon me, either. Since you want me to 'live my life as I wish,' my wish is for us to be friends for a long time...and for the same reasons friends want to be friends."
"Is that genuinely what you want?"
"Yes. Truly."
Whether due to your common backgrounds in the Japanese aristocracy or the juxtaposition he offered to your ex-husband, Toji had become your haven. He grounded you after your emotional tumbles and uplifted you with compliments and praiseâlike an anchor, an unyielding outlet with whom you could share your pains and transform your frustrations into something lesser.
Whenever you had needed him most, Toji had been there.
Always there.
Consequently, you hoped to be the same for him.
When Toji cupped your jaw with a large hand, you slowly pressed your cheek into his palm.
âYou care a lot about others but forget to think about yourself,â you went on, criticizing him in a light tone. There was also a question that you had been meaning to ask. âLike, why did you agree to take on the CEO position again after experiencing the Zenin family and your past?â
His fingers flexed slightly into your skin.
âMy decision is not about the people who wronged me, but rather the people who depend on me,â he clarified after a beat, his voice lowered like he confided in himself as much as in you. âI look at Mai and Maki, whoâve been treated like garbage their entire lives. I think about Megumi and Tsumiki, who deserve a world with the best opportunities. For them and for others, I want to create a future with something better. â
Which reminds you.
For the therapists, taking on renewed roles within the Zenin Corporation would be concerning given that they have previously faced accusations of neglecting the business in favor of their own pursuits.
âWhat will happen to sex therapy?â
Naoya Zenin returned to his apartment lobby tossed (yes, tossed) following a blindfolded car ride home.
To some degree, he wished he hadnât come back at all sinceâafter retrieving his phone and searching the Internetâhe discovered a new reality where media spokespeople, online netizens, and business leaders welcomed his cousinâs return to leadership while denouncing his own.
It was like the universe had been waiting to have Naoya reckon with his misconducts all at once, for he never fully understood the consequences of his sins until his face appeared over news websites, tabloid front pages, and social media feeds.
Even when he had business to attend to the following day, he could hardly push past his apartment entrance without being swarmed by meddlers who somehow had gotten intel on his address. Naturally, many people wanted to hear directly from the businessman who had fallen from grace, especially when the company he once led was one of the largest market players in the Asia-Pacific region. First came the paparazzi, the blinding white flashes from their cameras all seeking to capture his face. Then came the other onlookers, jeering with many insults his way.
âA scumbag is what you are. A disgusting cheater!â âYou don't even deserve a penny of your net worth!â âYour company, colleagues, and family deserved better!â 'Someone like Toji Fushiguro!'
The moment Naoya reached the backseat of his sedan, he smashed his phone in one savage blow, startling the chauffeur as the gadget's screen shattered. Didnât matter. He had the money to replace that by noon anyway.
Meanwhile, with white-gloved hands on the wheel, the driver tried to hide his tremor.
"A-Are you oâ"
"To the corporate headquarters," Naoya ordered. "Put your fucking foot on the pedal or the next thing I'll be blowing up is you."
"Yes."
Well, that shut him up.
Thanks to that, Naoya arrived at the Zenin Corporation headquarters in record-breaking time, but he encountered yet another human barrage. People shouted over one another, some even pushing microphones toward his face, as the crowd followed him like a gaggle of geese while he walked into the lobby.
He frowned when his ID badge failed at the security turnstiles, his access removed from the building's security system already. Just two days ago, he held hours-long meetings in the offices above. Now, two days later, he had been deemed an outsider without access to even the company café on the first floor.
He kicked the turnstile (as if that would change anything), and a steely voice interrupted his anger.
"Naoya Zenin, sir," a woman in a security uniform began, "you are no longer with the corporation and are causing a disturbance. Please, leave."
The blonde snapped his badge back into his palm before tucking both hands into the front pockets of his pressed pants. He sauntered forward slowly, making sure that the woman noticed the difference in their height. "No, I won't. I have an appointment."
"Please," she barged in again, unintimidated by his taller frame. Her voice this time was more stern as she glanced over at the nearby swarm. "You're creating a commotion on private property.â
Did he look like he cared? "My family's private property."
"Sir, Iâ"
"Heâs with me." With a third voice joining the conversation, both turned around as no one other than Toji Fushiguro himself walked over. "I invited him for a private meeting. Allow me to escort him."
The antagonism that the security woman had with Naoya vanished completely as she apologized profusely to the older man, and the blonde found her switch in character fucking deplorable and insulting.
After a brief exchange, Toji looked over. âThank you for arriving on time. I was worried you missed my text since I sent the message very early in the morning. Let me bring you upstairs.â
Despite receiving a smile, Naoya didnât like the belittling and patronizing tone that made him feel like a child who needed a chaperone or a beggar who needed a savior.
Nonetheless, he followed in tense silence.
When he walked into the designated conference room, Naoya tried to not look surprised to also see his father and your father in the same vicinity as well (although, given that they were the Board Director and the Chief Operating Officer, respectively, that shouldâve been expected).
He had to look away from their cold gazes and instead took the seat closest to the door. âWhy do you want to talk to me?â
Toji, on the other hand, settled at the head of the table and crossed one leg over his knee. âThis meeting is a courtesyââ. One you donât deserve but here we are. Weâll be brief.â He leaned across the table, sliding over a sleek black folder. âLater today, the Zenin Corporation will hold a press conference to address our organizational and management changes. In this binder are terms for your settlement. We would like you to accept the proposal, leave, and never associate yourself with the Zenin name again.â
When Naoya saw the documents inside, he wanted to laugh right then and there. âThis is a shitty offer that practically gives me nothing.â
What else did you expect? Tojiâs unwavering expression seemed to say.
He even opened his mouth to speak, but a much coarser voice spoke first.
"Because you did that to yourself,â Naobito explained. âAs of now, your actions have stripped you of everything and youâre still scoffing at someone elseâs generosity? Youâre a selfish manipulator who has jeopardized our stakeholdersâ trust. Our family name will not tolerate your presence moving forward!"
"Listen, Fatherâ"
"Mr. Zenin to you!"
Naoya could not believe he was related to the much older man in front of him. Except for their common features, the duo shared absolutely nothing including warmth for each other.
Which, to the blonde, was ridiculous. Because how could his parent not view the situation from his lens? No one understood the struggles that tormented him since his childhood and the reasons his anguish turned into greed.
"This isnât fair.â Naoyaâs voice rose, trembling with barely contained anger as he shoved the folder away. âI canât understand you, FaâMr. Zenin. Why? Why does everything that Toji touches turn to gold in your eyes? The world welcomes him back like heâs a prodigy, and you hand him everything on a silver platter. But then, why canât you defend your one and only son in a situation like this? AnythingâŠanything I do, to you, is not enough.â
With his chest heaving, Naoya had to pause and catch his breath. He didnât want to admit that he was on the verge of another outburst, only to be met with no sympathy in return.
"You and Toji have never been in the same position. Not now, not before, and not ever.â As the Chairman made himself clear, his voice cut through his sonâs rant like a blade. âWhile no one is perfect, Tojiâin the past and presentâearns respect by owning his failures and proving his worth. Due to his teamâs work in the last twenty-four hours, he stabilized the company, helping us avoid an immense drop in our market value and cancellations from our business partners.â In addition to his utter disregard for his sonâs feelings, Naobito even mocked him with a scoff. âMeanwhile, you donât play by the rules, boy. You exploit them to suit your needs, and when something backfires, you blame everyone but yourself. Toji didnât come back because I handed him anything. He came back because he knows how to make amends.â
Stop.
Naoya wanted this mental torture to come to a fucking stop.
His fatherâs scorn was bad enough, but the comparison to Tojiâalways Tojiâwas like salt ground into an open wound. What made the situation a hundred times more humiliating was how his older cousin sat across the table with a nearly indiscernible smirk on his face.
Yet, what could he realistically do when the Chairman went on?
âIn my entire life, I only requested from you one thing,â Naobito added. âPower and money did not interest him when compared to his daughter, so the one promise I made is that you would love her.â âAnd what did you do?â
Precisely not that.
The pointed change in topic made Daisuke L/N sit forward uncomfortably.
"Be honest with us, Naoya," he said. "Aside from marrying my daughter to legitimize your position in your family and company, what other intentions did you have?"
The man stared ahead with a solemn expression because, in that moment, he wasnât the Zenin Corporationâs Chief Operating Officer but merely a father.
A father who had been promised a dependable and loving son-in-law, not a cruel and ruthless deceiver.
Naoya shrugged.
"My original plan was to have your daughter for as long as I deemed her useful. Maybe until my old man kicked the bucket and I became the head of the Zenin household? Or, if I liked her enough, maybe longer? I don't know, not that I really cared." Naoya didn't give a shit that he sounded like a total sociopath. As a grown man, he could make his choices in speech. "But, what I did care about is how people only noticed me when I had thatâŠthatâ"
At that, Toji had to cut him off. âYouâve said enough. Weâre done here.â
âIâm not finished.â
âYes, you are. As I mentioned earlier, this meeting is only a courtesy.â
Toji rose from his seat and adjusted his blazer, the other executives doing the same but with pursed frowns. When the Chairman and the COO left quickly in silent rage, Toji followed them and gestured toward the black folder again on his way out.
"Anyway, all the legal documents are in there. Can read through them, if you care. You have the next hour to inform my secretary of your decision. My advice is to accept our offer since no legitimate company in the Asia-Pacificâor anywhere else in the worldâwill want you now. You ensured that for yourself."
Toji walked to the exit in precise and confident strides, but just before disappearing into the halls, he paused.
"Oh, but one last request.â Except what he said next wasnât a request, but a demand. âNever show yourself to us or anyone we care about again. Take this as a warning."
Then, the door clicked shut.
Breathe in. Breathe out.
Naoya stood up.
âGod fucking damnnit!â he hollered at the top of his lungs like a mad maniac. His hand shot out, sweeping the papers off the table violently, sending them scattering across the floor.
He hissed and seethed. How he hated this feeling. His current ordeal had been his wake-up call to realize that merely being born into status didn't mean he would be invincible.
If only he hadnât let his unchecked arrogance blind him, then his life trajectory would have played out differently!
âŠOr maybe nothing wouldâve changed at all.
Because perhaps, all these years, Naoya Zenin had been trying to grasp onto something that was never meant to be his.

Dragon Age, as a series, deserved so much better than Veilguard.
Spoilers for Veilguard and maybe other DA stuff.
Obligatory 'I'm not an asshole' disclaimer. Feel free to jump to the cut if you've read it.
Something came to my attention. I need to make it crystal clear that I utterly love the diversity in DAV. It's fantastic. I'm also a heavily left leaning, non-binary, queer as fuck reviewer, editor, and author.
I was on media blackout while I played DAV. Please be safe and take care of yourselves. Arguing with incels and white supremacists is completely pointless. They sea lion worse than an actual sea lion. Your mental health is important.
Though, every single time the anti-queer brigade comes out for a new DA game, I sit there thinking 'have you bozos ever played any DA game, like, ever?' My guess is nope.
Note. None of my writing on DA, but especially DAV, is edited. This is just my off the cuff writing. I don't have the time, energy, or heart to edit them properly.
The Solavellan romance deserved a much better end than 'die and go to fade prison'. I agree that Inky would likely be happy to leave. She's as traumatized as Solas for having to lead when she didn't want to. But I needed more than a craptastic Romeo and Juliet ending.
I refuse to do the heavy lifting for the writers. If it wasn't shown in the game or in supplementary materials, it didn't happen. Showing us the story was the writers' and devs job, not mine.
I mourn what will never be, even as I work on a Solavellan fix it fic.
How could they betray the IP so badly?
How could they betray their fanbase so badly? The fanbase that kept hope for that game alive for 10 years. I've seen so many people saying they've lost their interest or passion for the entirety of Dragon age. That they're not even remotely interested in another game because absolutely none of the choices we made in previous games matters anymore. They've wiped everything clean... or blighted it anyway. (I have absolutely no interest in another DA game. Not with Epler/Busche/Weekes involved. And whoever designed that ridiculous fighting system.)
The only way I could possibly be interested in another game would be if they loudly decanonized DAV, gave us a DLC (they've already confirmed there will be no DLC) that showed us Solas and Inky happy and not in a horrible place. One that showed us that somehow, something changed for the elves.
But that's so unlikely it's laughable.
The elves deserved a better ending. Are the survivors still enslaved or living in alienages? What actually changed for the elves except the largest portion of the Dalish being dead from blight? (Thatâs a real elvish win, isn't it?)
I'm a stubborn person. I refuse to let Epler's 'hate-revenge on Solas fan fic' ruin something I've loved for years. I still have the first 3 games. I'll make an actual happy ending and a decent romance for Rook in my fic.
And by the fact they paid a fortune to big gaming magazines while denying game keys to bigger honest reviewers... they knew.
They knew gamers wouldn't like it and tried to blow so much smoke up our asses with the interviews and AMAs.
How do they even sleep at night?
I'm a creative too, I write, do graphic design, digital (learning) and traditional (good) art.
My stories are important to me. They deserve not only an ending, but an ending that respects the characters, lore, and world that I've created.
My readers deserve that, too.
I, as the creator of my stories, deserve a decent, respectful ending.
Dragon age deserved it, too. A good, well thought out, and well written ending to the story of the Dreadwolf storyline, which, if you're paying attention, is intertwined through all 3 games. It's not just in Inquisition. One that made sense to the collected Lore, his struggles and mistakes, his literary role as an anti-hero.
I would never be able to do what they've done to a beloved series. I could never knowingly mislead fans like they did.
It's just a really painful reminder that beloved stories can be utterly destroyed in the wrong hands. And a reminder that there's so much talent and skill in Fan fic.
Busche worked on the Sims. No wonder the companions often feel as interesting as wet cardboard. Most Sims NPCs do, too. (I actually enjoy the Sims, but the NPCs aren't why I like it.)
And she had the gall to blame 'culture wars' and 'identity politics' for why the game is tanking. Rather than take ownership of the incredibly bad calls made for DAV.
It's just gross. I wish I could stop thinking about it. But Dragon Age got me through some tough times. It means a lot to me.
And it just deserved better. So did we.

I don't think there's anything wrong with a Lavellan who stays loyal. She CHOOSES to love Solas because she knows he can't love himself. She CHOOSES to save him because she is the only one who truly sees him. She BELIEVES in his goodness when he no longer believes in it himself. Her love for Solas is her greatest strength. No offense Anon, but none of the things you listed sound like positive qualities to me. By all means, play however you want and headcanon whatever you like. I have to go by what the game gave me and I just don't see it. Maybe I'm just not a romantic but I can't imagine hanging on to a guy who left me for a full decade after he broke up with me. Even if I were going to save him from some earth shattering disaster my feelings would have definitely cooled and I'd have moved on romantically. Ten years is as long as I've been with my current partner, I've built an entire life in that span of time and formed long standing relationships and a community. The idea that Lavellan has so little in her life after a decade that she's HAPPY to share Solas's fade prison because this guy who dumped her 10 years ago is the best thing she's ever had in her life just makes me feel sad for her. It makes her life sound empty, bleak even. Also I struggle to believe that they actually know each other all that well? Maybe I lack the will to fill in any gaps. Maybe my reading is an uncharitable one, but from what I experienced ingame Solas was never upfront with her about anything and he hid from her something he fully knew might affect how she views him. I don't think the version of him the Inquisitor saw was anywhere near the full picture. Whether he loved her back or not will never matter because it doesn't change the cold fact that he still watched her run around for a year knowing he had answers she would have wanted/needed but decided to let her romance him anyway. He tries to convince her and himself that she's "different" from her people somehow and disapproves if she argues with him about it. He constantly disparages her people and again, gives disapproval if she pushes back too much. The relationship is, by design, one that requires Lavellan to do most of the labor and nearly all of the chasing. You even frame it that way in this ask. She chooses him. He does not choose her. Not even once does he actually choose her, as evidenced by him leaving her not once, but twice. At no point does he extend any invitation for her to join him despite the fact that he does have agents and people on his side. The only choice he makes for their relationship is to leave her behind once the truth is revealed. And he wouldn't even have told her that if she hadn't been the one chasing after him. Let that sink in. He would never have told her the truth if she hadn't pursued him. It's a pattern of her having to earn something from him rather than him giving it freely because he cares about her.
maybe I'm too detached about it, but when I finally got around to playing the Solas romance I couldn't shake the feeling that I was playing a character that was begging for little scraps and always left with more questions than answers. It was a shallow and unfulfilling experience and to complete the romance I felt like I had to roleplay a character that was ultimately ok with never being viewed as an equal.

#itâs actually incredibly tragic . but that does not mean the prototypes cannot be fun#like ohhh every second i think about them i know they are destined for frankly horrible deaths . just due to the nature of their existence#iâve been approaching pvp2003 by mostly just . fleshing out the things that i need to as they come up . i do think, aside from mercury bias, if bg had been in all season she would have been all wnba, first or at least second. i think people undervalue her because of the rebounding but she is 1000% the worst officiated player in the league, on both sides of the court. so the fact that she's been able to have the performance that she had is incredible, and that she didn't get the acknowledgment really just underscores how much people take what she does for granted.
#i saw something interesting that kim milky basically has her players specialize and so they come out of college less well rounded#exhibit a angel's shooting vs rebounding#and i didn't watch bg in college so maybe i'm totally wrong on this but maybe rebounding just wasn't he job#and then i saw on reddit or something that maybe because she is so poorly officiated she'd get called for too many fouls on rebounding#for it to be worth it#and while i understand the value of rebounding really i do the mercy's problem wasn't that they weren't trying#well sometimes it was but it was that their whole system wasn't designed for it#if you have 4 players on the perimeter to space and shoot 3#you're going to hope they go in and run the floor instead#teams that rebound well dedicate bodies and time to rebounding#and i believe that it was a conscious choice the merc made to not do that#and if you look at old merc games they struggled with rebounding then too#i actually will have more to say about this in the future but the mercury's style of play has lived and died with dt's style for 20 years#the mercury have the most 100 point games of any franchise#and they are responsible for most of the 200 point total scores across the league#ie their fast break and bad defense lol#and while it's not entirely true - she is not responsible for every result they've ever had - i don't think you get westhead's style of pla#to work without her talent and the penny cappie dt trio in 2006#or at least it isn't successful and maybe doesn't change the pace of play in the league the way it did#it's also interesting that if the lottery draw goes differently in 2006 and merc have the first pick do they get seimone or do they stick#cappie? i think they stick with cappie bc they needed a true pg and from what i've seen seimone is a 2/3#and i don't think dt becomes the player the league knows without having a true pg [vs her playing point]#the thing is dt can play point better than most people but i think she plays better when she has someone else there to help#and her talking about oh i should've won mvp in 2006 [when i dropped 40] [lisa leslie won that year]#and in 2014 [best team ever] [maya moore won that year]#you look at the stats and there is for sure an argument to be made there#but it all comes back to post players#and i know wikipedia says maya is a power forward but she seems like more of a 3 sometimes? i haven't watched her enough#but i don't think dt can win mvp in 2009 without that team specifically#which means [and this is my theory of life] that everything happens the way it has to happen for you to end up where you are today

Every time I think I've finally settled on a Pimpernel design there's always this little voice in the back of my head going "wow it took you three years to come up with that? Lame lol"

Hi gamers guess who's thinking abt unit swap stuff again. Shiho and Saki discussing who would be best fit to play the cast in their musicals knowing full well they're going to assign Honami to the main character like they always do and the Saki will insist on playing the main villain like she always does and then Ichika gets stuck playing every other character while also playing the trumpet like he always does
#rat rambles#sekai posting#unit swap au#shiho initially only does backstage work when it comes to their actual shows but eventually they get talked into taking some on stage roles#also yeah Ive been fleshing them out a bit more but mostly in the concept department as unfortunately there rly isnt much more I can do#without fleshing out wxs too and Im too scared to and also have too few ideas#most of what I've said in the past of each of their general roles in production still holds true but Ive musicalified them#one thing I do want to do with them is have them make more and more connections with the other units as time goes on#so eventually what was initially going to be a 2 person project turns into a whole hord of ppl helping shiho and the gang#this is mostly because of my current vison of unit swap shiho and I think itd be cute to see them be surrounded by so much support#they still mostly insist on only having the 4 of them perform on stage but occasionally rui pops in to help with backstage stuff in shows#shiho is an actual actor in and plenty of folks will show up to help with set design#also fun honami struggling rly hard with acting until eventually it starts to click and suddenly the others keep asking her for advice and#she has absolutely no idea what to tell them because she doesnt even know how she started being able to stand on stage without trembling#let alone how she got to a point where others look up to her acting she just walks on stage blacks out and then wins#the secret is that in the dance club she joined to try to get better endurance minori pushed her into the deep end on accident#you see minori made the club along side airi to basically try to get a better grasp on dancing by teaching it since she had spent most of#her time just learning and practicing by herself and airi was like well maybe a good way to wrap your head around it better would be to#stop bashing your head into the same wall and try changing your perspective with it a bit#or smth like that again still in development stuff#and since minori basically threw herself in the deep end when she was first learning she tried to start similarly with the others#which had mixed results as it meant that they spent a lot longer on parkour than dancing during the first year dvskdhjd#all while minori continued to give everyone else heart attacks every meeting with her messed up cartoon luck#but hey all of this did absolute wonders for honami's physical capabilities and also for her confidence to a degree at least#bad news now saki always tries to write in unecesary action in every scene and shiho has to be like we are not making honami do a backflip#everytime she has a line#also Im sure you could put two and two together by now but yeah saki and shiho write most of the scripts together#ichika usually helps with the music composition and all of them work together to brainstorm and create the set pieces and costumes#they may have like zero budget but they have the power of âšfriendshipâš and also eventually rui#oh yeah and honami plans out most of the choreography with some imput from the others

Relativity Falls!
Design Concepts (and my unnecessary thoughts):
Excuse the the colors, ig my apps are fighting.
I see Mabel finding success no matter what happens to her, but I really like the thought of her running an insane arts and crafts business in GF. Alternatively, if she fell in the portal, she'd come out acting confident as always, but she probably wouldn't realize how much the constant change and lack of family/stability wore her out until she settled back in. In either case, she's a bit cracked.
Dipper is investigative, but cracks easiest under stress and is not as inherently adventurous as Mabel or Ford- so the portal wouldn't treat him well. If he's not the one in the portal, he'd be into stargazing and real magic to share with people, while also warding tourists away from the dangerous stuff. In general, he'd be an unhappy adult if left to his own devices, lol.
Between Dipper and Mabel, I like Dipper being in the portal more. He's a great protagonist, but as a supporting cast member, he needs to be more insane to match the draw that is 'Mabel taking care of children,' ha. I also love the idea of there being no portal / some other looming threat for these two to struggle with (at least because Hirsche has made it clear that Dipper and Mabel are equally smart, and to me it seems like the portal would reopen way quicker with them), but I didn't plan on posting these and I don't know how my followers feel about me posting lore.
Stanford and Stanley:
Pretty much how they are in canon, but now they're in a setting where they can get over themselves, ha. They aren't quite as mature as Dipper and Mabel were at their age, but after coming to GF, they finally found other people to look out for them. Dipper could be a more emotionally available and level-headed role model (I think having people to take care of is calming for him in turn), and they'd both look up to Mabel as the peak of somebody who knows how to socialize.
Fiddleford:
He's a sweet, southern, farm-raised mechanical engineer just like in canon.
Idk why Fiddleford is in GF (visiting an unnamed grandparent?), but I really like his relationship with Ford in the journal. Following that thought, in this AU, he starts out more of Ford's friend than Stan's, and it's kind of a big deal. Unlike Dipper's arc on learning to be a kid, Stan and Ford clearly struggled a lot with interpersonal relationships / finding security outside of eachother, and that's what I think this AU could be about (it's great they realized they need each other in canon, but the part where they had no one else to turn to is also kinda crazy if you ask me).
Ford gets to meet another smart kid in a weird town, which helps him feel more normal. He has a better idea of what friendship is because of it, but also, since I can't imagine Dipper wanting an apprentice so young/vulnerable/impressionable or Mabel asking only one of the twins to stay- he'd have to come to terms with the fact that he can't live in his dream world forever. (Or maybe the apprenticeship comes from somewhere else, just because the conflict around going back to Glass Shard Beach at all, or sending Stan alone could be pretty good.)
On the flipside, I think Stan's initial jealousy of Ford and Fiddleford's friendship would force him to try finding his own friends / hobbies. I like the idea that he fails at first- and a lot- but Mabel notices his mounting frustration (which he is very keen on hiding), and her consistent and unorthodox support makes him realize he wasn't alone to begin with. He can be more open around her, which makes it easier to open up to others, and then he can make friends without having to pull any tricks. He probably starts with some animals, and then at least gets closer to Fiddleford anyways (I feel like they're both more practical than Ford and value human company more, so they'd bond easier once Stan gets over his personal hurdle).
Anyways- because that was way too much- Mabel's exes are a constant source of antagonists and Dipper is stressed about setting a good example.

An analysis on how Sir Pentious' character design represents his personality and development perfectly (beware of Hazbin Hotel spoilers)
Let's get this out of the way: Sir Pentious is a snake, an animal mostly known for generally believed negative traits such as poison, deceit and betrayal. We don't know WHY he's in Hell, maybe he was a "snake oil salesman" considering he comes from the Victorian times and he's into hyping up what he does, or maybe he was into war. Thing is, he's a Sinner whose design just scream "Evil".

He always had eyes all around him not just because of a stylistic choice.
Sir Pentious always felt like he was watched, and had to watch out for any danger.
"Everyone here is too nice: obviously it must be a lie! I can sense they are planning to kill me, but when?! HOW?! I must be PREPARED!"
Sadly, he's been constantly berated by other demons, far more effective in destruction, status, cruelty and charisma. Alastor won't ever bother to remember him, Cherri always ones up him, and the Vs, the ones he admires to most, won't care less about him.
To the point that Vox sent him as a spy without the intention to save him if things were going to fail. Heck, he even openly tells him to die while calling him a failure.
So of course he's got reasons to have trust issues, or taking everything so seriously, being constantly reminded of what he can't accomplish. So he puts an air of grandure that may be very flamboyant, but is VERY frail.
But, if we have to be frank here, his biggest source of insecurities... is himself.
He has eyes on his tail (his softer, more vulnerable side, which is ironically made even MORE lieable to getting hurt because of how sensitive those organs are), and inside his hood, so he could look out better for danger when on alert mode.
Heck, even the mark on his hood kinda resembles one eye.
Problem is, when you see his hood folded, when he's at ease, neutral or sad, those are not looking at outside sources.
They're looking at him, at his back. A constant stare that happens everytime he lets his guard down and shows how vulnerable he is. A gaze that can sense all of his weakness, his struggles, his insecurities.
And it's all him.
Pentious constantly believes that his inferiority complex will fade away once he'll accomplish something grand that will make others accept him. But he is his biggest critic, his worst enemy: HE is the one who believes he's a failure, that he'll never gain approval from others.
This show takes place in Hell, but this is Sir Pentious' personal Hell: insecurity born out of self hatred. Doomed to feel everyone's gaze upon him, including his own. Believing the danger to his self esteem is from others, when it's really from him.
But then he's accepted at the Hazbin Hotel: Charlie forgives him, he bonds with Angel, Husk and Niffty who don't care a bit about what he's accomplished or not, or what he's done in the past.
He feels more comfortable in showing his vulnerable side, and no one judges him for how easy it is for him to get emotional.
Of course he's still very insecure, considering how he struggles to confess to Cherri, but notice how he stops building machines or planning to attack others as soon as he starts bonding with the others: he doesn't have a reason to destroy or attack, now that he knows he's loved.
And his final design, when he goes to Heaven, shows how much he's changed, yet stayed the same. He may have died a hero, but he's still the same awkward snake we've come to love.
Speaking of love, let's talk about that!
No more eyes on his tail, now it's just on his chest (showing he's opened his heart), his glasses are now heart shaped, and even the markings inside his hood resemble kiss marks more than anything else.
And look: the mark on his hood is now heart shaped!
Why all these hearts? Why did all the eyes disappeared from his body? Even his eyes that were looking at his back?
Simple: love. Love defeated his insecurities and self hatred. He died for love.
He died protecting his friends, his new family, his new home.
He confessed and kissed Cherri knowing full well he wouldn't have made it, and yet he went anyway.
The usually cowardly and timid Pentious actually faced a great danger with courage and determination: he acted selflessly by putting himself in harm's way, he didn't steal (naturally) and by going against Adam he did indeed "stick it to the man"!
He used his weaponry knowhow and battle experience not to conquer, but to save his loved ones.
His only thought up until his demise was: "I'll go down protecting them".
And he's been rewarded not only by becoming an angel, but also being spawned directly in front of Emily and Sera, two Seraphim, the highest rank for an angel to have, who have also been depicted as snakes of fire throughout history! Sir Pentious, the lowly demon considered a failure by everyone, actually has been noticed by the Seraphim! He's come so far!
He's now come to represent the REAL symbolism of a snake: the duality of death and rebirth, transformation and immortality (ironically a reference to the fact he's been around since 1888 without ever dying from any Extermination or blessed weapons).
And isn't so poetic that a snake, the "source of the original evil", was the first sinner to ascend to Heaven? Or that this episode was released on February 1st, or National Serpent Day?
And of course, as the Bible itself says:
"Greater love has no one than this: to lay down oneâs life for oneâs friends."
(John 15:13)
And knowing him, I'm confident in saying he'll keep helping his friends even in his new position, like the soft hearted noodle he's always been, but was to afraid to show it up until now.

Fashion designer Bakugou who sees you at his favorite cafe one morning. Your clothes are comfortable and colorful, but they obscure the beauty of your body he tells himself. So he marches over to you, wearing all black and a skull tshirt with heavy combat boots. It doesn't help that he's also drop dead gorgeous, so when he hovers over you and breathes out. "Let me undress you." Your brain short circuits. "I can dress you much better, let me." He doesn't so much ask as he commands, so you find yourself nodding along, unsure why he's interested in you in the first place.
When you get back to his studio he's measuring your figure, his large hot hands skimming over your breasts, your hips, your waist. The more he discovers, your waist would fit perfectly in his hands, and your tits are begging him to taste, the more he struggles to keep professional. He just wanted to have you as a model, he swears to himself. But when he's measuring your ass, he starts to lose it.
"Who the fuck let you out of the house in those grandma clothes when your body is this fucking amazing?"
The words slip out of him in a huff, and you blush bright red. "I-I don't wear grandma clothes." You try to defend yourself, but looking around his studio at the slinky tight fit dresses with corsets and plunging necklines, you realize that yeah- maybe you do wear grandma clothes.
"Just wait until I design something for you, you're going to look even more beautiful. Especially as my date." He's never been nervous asking someone out before, but damnit your curves and sweet, shy personality were a combination he was loathe to let go.
"Your date?" You felt like you were struggling to breathe. The super hot designer wanted to go on a date with you? You knew you were bigger, its not like you're oblivious. But never once did he make you feel lesser for being fat, he just seemed upset that you tried to hide yourself.
"If you'll have me." His voice was suddenly softer, his red eyes gentle as he looks up at you from where he's on his knees, the measuring bunched in his fist.
"Yes." You breathe out, knowing this chance encounter would change your life.

Pairing: Mingi x f reader

Summary: Months after being convinced to join Mingi on tour, you can't help but ruminate on the events of the last year of your life. Despondent, you start making choices and saying things that just aren't like you. In the heat of the moment everything comes out, not in the way you wanted; but maybe, it was just the way things were meant to unfold all along.

You walk down the hallway of the hotel, the florescent lights making you squint to the ground. Another night of tour, another pounding headache. And here you were trudging to your room, sure to find a mountain of texts and emails in need of responses, another random hotel room bed waiting to embrace you. You're sure this one has pillows that will leave your neck a knotted mess in the morning, just like all the others. You're tired of this, tired of your body feeling like it has one use and one use only, tired of feeling like it's falling apart on you. This was supposed to be a break from monotony, an exciting new change. A chance to both rest and do exciting things.
Pulling out your key card you slot it through the lock, the light on the handle lighting up green. You push it open, almost dropping your bag as it slides off your shoulder and catches painfully on your upper arm.
"Ow," you mutter, crumpling to the floor in lieu of setting it down. The room is mostly dark, illuminated only by the city lights outside. You see through the window that next door is another hotel. Another hotel. You'd truly had enough. It was time to switch up the routine, at least a little. You couldn't bare to spend another night struggling to fall asleep in a hotel you didn't deserve to be in.
Leaving your bag behind you make your way back to the elevator, back to the lobby. The front door swings open and a chilly breeze hits you, making you shiver instantly. Your shorts and t-shirt might not be the most comfortably at this hour, but in your mentally exhausted state the shiver feels good. Any sort of feeling, really, was good. Anything new, anything different.
You bust through the doors, greeted by the cool night air, gripping your phone and key card tightly as you snake past a group of obviously tipsy businessmen. One says something to you but you don't even make out the words, trembling as you stalk by them without looking up. Harsh, fierce anxiety lances through you and suddenly you feel scared, like something terrible is about to happen. You know you're in the nicest part of the city, the streets well lit and a team of security always present outside the hotel. It isn't a rational feeling, the impending doom that's hitting you. But it's there and it's crushing, making your breath shaky as you walk down the street towards nothing in particular.
It was nearly five months ago that the two of you met, at a party thrown after the biggest fashion show you'd ever worked. It was supposed to be the highlight of your career as a makeup artist and up-and-coming designer, but truthfully you were so burnt out by the time it happened, so completely exhausted by your boss, that the whole event had passed you in a blur. You couldn't remember a single thing about that day but the dread you felt at the sound of your alarm, the panic staying with you all day even as you sipped a sweet cocktail, mingling in a way you really didn't want to but knew you should. For the betterment of your career, which you thought you so cared about.
And in the middle of the terrible day turned terrible night, there Mingi was. The group of designers he had come with were fretting around him, making their way to the bar to order their drinks. You hadn't moved far from the bar after grabbing yours, unable to actually make yourself go and introduce yourself to people like you said you would. Like you'd promised your boss you would. Your mind was so blank you weren't sure you'd even be able to form a sentence. But then he spoke to you, this striking stranger with the deepest eyes you'd ever seen, eyes that made you want to dive in and explore the entirety of his head.
Sure, the sex that night was amazing. It truly was, you shouldn't undersell it; but really the thing that stuck with you was what he said afterwards, while you both were tangled up in the sheets of your bed. Why are you doing it if you hate it? he'd asked you. And you'd explained that really you didn't hate it, you just hated your boss, your fashion company. You loved fashion and makeup and everything about that world, but you couldn't take another day of watching every one of your coworkers go home crying, your cruel boss tearing everyone down in front of you constantly. Except you, for some reason. I don't deserve her kindness, I don't know why she likes me, you'd said. No, she doesn't deserve your talent, he'd replied.
And then when he was leaving, his final parting words; You deserve so much more than that woman. Oh, it was simple platitudes. An easy thing for him to say to a girl he'd just been fucking, a girl he might want to still be able to fuck in the future. You knew that was probably the case, that he just wanted to play nice. It's no fun when your hookup starts telling you how fucking depressed she is, how beaten down by her job she is. Immediately upon him leaving you spent the night bashing yourself, screaming into the void that you never should have brought it up. Why am I always such a blabbermouth after sex? you thought. You spent days feeling regret, which finally turned to just embarrassment. But then he texted you, and you'd gone and had a late dinner, you both completely exhausted from your inhumanely long work days. In your delirious state you laughed together, grabbing desert on the way to your place, where again he fucked you senseless, his eyes boring into yours afterwards in the complete silence. You'd never had someone look at you so much during sex, or after, and it was exposing. He saw you. He saw in. And finally you had the courage to say fuck it, fuck her, and emailed your boss that you weren't coming back. He celebrated with you that day. Such an intensely intimate moment for two strangers; but really, he didn't feel like a stranger at all.
So the friendship grew. You picked up some freelance makeup work to keep yourself afloat, finally working with a friend on a project he'd begged you to join for months. That was fun until it wasn't, just like every little job was, and you were thankful that you didn't have to stay at any of them for long. You made it work for a little while, your rendezvous with Mingi the true highlight of most of your weeks. Your mind was still elsewhere, still swimming in the clouds as your body went about your life, as you felt like a shell, like someone pretending to be you. Only maybe when you were with him, when he was deep inside you, did you feel present. You could feel like yourself again, if only for a few moments. And god did you need that.
Come with me on tour, he'd said one night, his impending months of travel hanging in the air between you. You laughed, you laughed hard. What a ridiculous notion. But he didn't let it go, not for a second. It was late at night, your post coitus talk drifting off into the darkness as you repeatedly made each other yawn. I'm serious, I need you, he'd said. Again you laughed, how could you not? You weren't dating; this thing between you was very casual, and though you knew you might be dipping into dangerous waters by not defining anything you really couldn't be bothered to care in that moment. It's not possible, though, you'd replied. And then he'd vehemently explained to you how it absolutely, definitely was. It'd taken another week of thinking it over, but then you'd said okay. The opportunity called to you, the chance to get out of the place you'd been grinding in for the last few years and travel the world a bit, with this new friend, or whatever he was. In the end it wasn't that hard of a choice, as the life you were leaving behind wasn't really holding you anymore, wasn't really much of anything. And that did make you sad when you thought about it for too long, so you pushed the feeling down and surrendered instead to the excitement of the new opportunity. You'd lied to your mom, saying you were employed as a makeup artist for the tour; it made you a little sick to lie to her, but you didn't know what else to say. The guy I've been fucking wants me to come? I hate my life so I agreed to? You didn't want to break her heart or make her worry. Even with some of your friends you skirted around the truth, not wanting them to worry either.
And now as you walk down the street, as your legs shake in the night, you really wish someone knew just how awful it all felt. Just what a dumb situation you'd gotten yourself into. Day in and day out he'd fuck you, often in the completely exposed hallways of the arenas, making you come repeatedly while looking into your eyes deeply, making your stomach clench with feelings you really, really didn't want to admit you were having. Though you got along well and could talk for hours, it was clear to you that it really was just sex to him. Since tour started you'd barely spend a day together that didn't involve him inside of you, and you'd begun to resent the time you spent with the actual makeup team for the tour. You'd been grateful for their company at first, especially one woman you'd clicked with immediately, but slowly you couldn't avoid feeling jealous at how well they were all treated by their boss, jealous that they could pursue their dreams and it wasn't crushing them. And then there were the members of staff that had stumbled upon you and Mingi in the act, who looked at you completely differently now, like you were sick or disturbed. It all began to eat at you, especially that you found the humiliation and the intensity of it desirable, that even though it pained you, you couldn't stop craving the public sex, already horny for him before his break in the show was even close. You felt so fucking shameful for doing what you had done. Touring with a band, just so that one of the members could fuck you when he pleased? How had you ended up here? A quick thought of childhood you, of her hopes and her dreams of success in the industry, made tears instantly form in your eyes and begin falling. Stop it, stop crying, you begged yourself. The lights from the corner store blurred between your tears, and suddenly you realized you'd walked further than intended, and you didn't know where you were.
Opening your phone to pull up a map, you saw the text.
Mingi: I'm coming over, be there in like 10
Sent almost ten minutes ago. You held your breath for a moment, waiting for another text. But it didn't come. And then the anger came, boiling up inside you. How fucking presumptuous, you thought. Sure, it wasn't that strange. He'd sent almost identical texts about a dozen times throughout tour. But now it smacked you so plainly, that he just expected you to always be there. Just waiting for him, whenever he wanted you. Like it couldn't be possible you maybe didn't want to see him.
y/n: Don't bother, I'm not even there
It only took a few seconds for his text to appear.
Mingi: Are you okay?
I'm fucking great, actually, you wanted to say. You rolled your eyes, feet stuck to the sidewalk, the line of trees you were under feeling like good protection.
y/n: yes
That was all you had, even though you knew it was betraying everything you felt. It was way too weird of a response, too short. Somehing was obvious wrong. You groaned as you saw his call coming through, your phone lighting up like a beacon in the dark night.
"Hi," you say, not even trying to make your voice sound bright or normal.
"Y/n, where are you?" Mingi asks.
"Why do you care?" you respond, already feeling embarrassed by your behavior.
"You don't need to be nasty with me, I'm just checking on you," he replies, keeping his voice steady.
"I told you I'm okay," you respond, sighing heavily.
"You obviously aren't, you're not acting like yourself," he says, his tone hard to read. All you can think is that he's disappointed, mad that you're not where he expected you to be.
"You say that like you know me well," you respond, huffing.
"I do..." he trails off, voice low. Like he's contemplating how to respond to you, how to continue this conversation.
"Fucking me doesn't really equate to getting to know me," you say, your tone laced with anger. "I just felt like going for a walk tonight, I've spent so many evenings in hotel rooms recently and a midnight walk just sounded nice. Like I said, I'm fine."
"You're walking outside?" he asks.
"Mm-hmm," you respond, your tone unkind.
"By yourself?"
"Mm-hmm."
"You shouldn't be out there, you promised me," he says, sighing deeply.
"Mingi, I really don't get why it matters. I'm a fucking adult, I can go for a walk when I fucking feel like it," you retort, even angrier. How dare he tell you what you should or shouldn't be doing.
"I'm coming with Yubin to get you," he says, and you hear the elevator opening for him through the phone.
"Can you just let me do what I want, for once?" you groan, crouching down to put your head in your hands, unsure what to do with all of the frustration you're feeling.
"You're being a real asshole right now, and I don't know why, but I'm not letting you get lost in a fucking foreign country. Tell me where you are," he spits, finally losing control of the even tone he'd kept so far.
"I. Don't. Know. Mingi," you say slowly, like he's stupid. God it's embarrassing, the way you're being so uncharacteristically nasty, but you just can't help it. You feel so genuinely out of control, your entire body shaking with anger and dread. He had been there with you to help you finally quit your horrible job, been there during the tumultuous time afterwards while you jumped from job to job, trying every day to assure yourself and everyone else that you were doing fine. The money might be less, but you were actually eating and sleeping enough most days, and that had to count for something. You'd been connected to him then, had those little moments of support. And that was why you'd come on tour, or at least part of the reason. Now he'd been much more distant, not a conversation between you that remotely resembled your old talks. After sex he'd be running back to stage, or passing out in your hotel bed instantly, the exhaustion from tour clearly affecting him. You could understand it from an intellectual point of view, but it didn't mean your feelings weren't hurt.
"I could fucking kill you right now," he sighs through the phone, the sound of the elevator arriving on the eighth floor coming through too. "Look for some street signs, find the cross streets," he demands, softly. "Y/n please," he begs, your quiet resolve breaking, the tears threatening to come again.
"Fine," you say, squinting out towards the intersection ahead of you, the street names hard to read from so far. "Um, one is Rolling.. Heels? Or no, Hills, I think. And the other must be, fuck, whatever street our hotel is on. I can't remember."
"Thank you," he says, the words clearly painful coming out of his mouth. "Promise me you won't move," he sighs, his hand knocking on the door of his manager's room.
"I promise," you sigh, your tone sounding sarcastic.
"Y/n, I swear to god..." Mingi groans.
"I promise, I mean it," you respond, your tone more solid. You really do mean it, you really will be here waiting. Because even if you're pissed at him you're thankful someone is coming to your rescue as you shiver, your body feeling so weak you're not even sure you could make it back to the hotel. As you trudged down the street you hadn't noticed how exhausted you were, your head full of every memory of the last year. It wasn't until you were on the phone with him that it hit you.
"Okay, we'll be there in a few minutes, don't move an inch. And call me if anything weird happens," he says before saying goodbye, hanging up as you hear him start to tell his manager Yubin what's happening.
It takes mere minutes for them to reach you, and you climb into the back seat behind Mingi, behind the passenger side. Neither of you say a word as you climb in, the click of your buckle loud in the tense silence of the car. Slowly Yubin presses on the gas again, gliding back down the road towards the hotel. Mingi reaches his left hand back around his seat to grab your angle gently, sighing at the contact proving that you're fine, that you're here with him. Even if you're not saying a word and clearly pissed at him, the dominating emotion he's feeling still is fear, worry that something's terribly wrong. And at least now he knows you're physically okay, that no one's taken you. When you exit the car, having finally parked in the underground garage, Mingi unzips his hoodie and wraps it around you, hating the way your body subtly fights his every movement even though you're clearly so cold.
In the elevator you still didn't speak a word to either of them, your eyes glued to the floor. When the doors open to your floor you step out quickly, relieved that you'd finally be able to be by yourself again, to bury yourself in one of your books or just bury your face in the pillows, to just be. For a few steps the relief washes over you, until you realize that Mingi is following close behind, his whole being looking ragged with exhaustion and anger.
"Why are you following me?" you spit, not bothering to even look back at him. You unlock your door and he slips inside behind you, closing it gently. With a long sigh he turns to you, your arms crossed as you stare at him, petulant.
"I'm staying here with you tonight so you don't run off again," he states, like it's plain as day.
"But I don't want that," you snap, the anger boiling over now. "Do you ever consider what I fucking want?! Does the thought ever cross your mind that maybe I have feelings?!"
"I get that you don't want me here right now, I'm getting that loud and clear, but you just went walking off in a foreign country in the middle of the night without telling me. And I'm the reason you're fucking here, so I kind of feel responsible for your wellbeing. We can book you a flight home tomorrow, or I can give you space for the rest of tour, or whatever it is that you want, but I will not let you go walking off like that again. You don't know this city, you don't know anyone who lives in this city. That was fucking stupid, what you just did," he says, his own arms coming to cross over his chest. Now yours fall, in defeat. It pains you because he's right, but the idea of admitting that makes you feel edgy, like you'll fall to pieces in an instant.
You groan into your hands, sitting down at the breakfast table in the corner of your room, on one of the grossly fancy chairs. The wood armrests feel cold against the side of your thighs, your elbows resting against the table as you run your hands through your hair in frustration, your head coming to rest on the table too. Already your anger is morphing into just exhaustion, just upset. Tears are coming again, and you try to sob silently, try not to make a big scene in front of him. But your sniffles give you away, the way you're wiping your cheeks with the sleeve of his hoodie, burying your head in your arms.
"Y/n, what's wrong?" he asks, standing against the wall as far from you as he can be in this room. His arms are still crossed over his chest but you're not even looking; from the sound of his voice, though, you can tell he's far away. Suddenly you feel like a bomb about to go off, like he's avoiding you for fear of triggering the explosion. It makes you even more ashamed, that you're acting out, that you aren't holding yourself together like you usually do. That you're so obviously falling apart in front of him.
"I'm exhausted," you manage, between sobs.
"Then why don't you lay down and get some sleep?" he asks gently.
"I can't fucking sleep!" you snap, finally looking up at him with red eyes and tear-stained cheeks. "I can't sleep, that's the fucking problem, I'm so fucking anxious every night," you spit, your breaths shaky as you let the tears keep falling.
"Y/n..." Mingi replies, sighing hard as he stares into your eyes, your head clearly full of worry and pain and every other bad feeling. He doesn't know what to do or say to make it better, but he feels his body pulled towards yours, like coming closer must be the correct thing to do. You stare him down as he walks closer, as he sits down to the side of the chair you're in, grabbing one of your hands and putting it between his own. He stares at it for a moment, seeing how rough and battered your nail beds look, and the healing cut on your pointer finger that you got two weeks ago when one of his rings slid past it in just the wrong way. When he looks up at you to meet your gaze you see the glint of possible tears forming, his head swimming with worry too. It makes you feel things too deep in your chest, too painful for you to bear it.
"Stop," you say, but it's so soft and lacking in strength that you clearly don't mean it, at least not entirely. You bury your head in your hands again, as Mingi keeps staring up at you, his chest pained at how you just reeled away from him.
"Do you want to go home tomorrow?" he asks, to no response. You're silently dealing with your rapid heart beat, dealing with the way that his look made you teeter on the edge of emotional collapse. Not even a grunt escapes your lips, as you mull over what he had just asked you. Why the hell could he read your mind so easily?
"Y/n, please talk to me. Please tell me what's going on," he pleads, a hand on your ankle like it was in the car, anchoring him again with the knowledge that at least you're here in front of him.
"You don't want to hear it, I promise you," you respond, sharply inhaling and slowly letting it out.
"Why is that?" he asks.
"Cause it's gonna piss you off, probably," you say, a few tears running down your cheeks again.
"I figured this was about me," he says, still looking up. Your head snaps to him again, your face stony.
"Um, yeah," you say, proud of yourself for not also adding a duh.
"So tell me what I did," he says, his grip on your ankle tightening slightly.
"No, stop," you squeak out, the tears turning to sobs in a moment as you crumple in on yourself again. Your shoulders heave and you breathe deeply as you try to not start full-on wailing. You're in no state to talk, no state to answer him, and with your head spinning the way it is you have no idea what nasty, vitriolic language might spill out of you if you do. As embarrassing as it feels you hope your tears will make him at least stop pressing you, maybe even totally step away and leave you be, finally.

"What?" he asks again.

I'm fucking exhausted myself. I'm sorry, I'm so fucking sorry." His apologies make your chest ache, that feeling deep within you beating on the walls of your heart to finally be let free. But you still suppress it, still you push it down. Just because he's apologizing doesn't mean he feels the same, and you spiral with the knowledge that in your burnt out state you got yourself into a situation that's almost surely about to blow up in your face.
He looks up to meet your eyes, your entire face flush with red and your eyes and nose puffy. Some snot is falling out of one of your nostrils, your bottom lip stuck between your teeth as you try to control your breaths, your body still shaking and your tears still falling fast. Your mind is obviously running a mile a minute still, and behind your eyes he can see just how truly exhausted you are.

Slowly he places you down on the bed, untying your shoes and gently removing them, then removing your socks and placing them on the small pile of dirty clothes already gathered to the side of your suitcase.
"Do you want different shorts to sleep in?" he asks, knowing your activities earlier already ruined this pair. You really didn't think it was likely that he felt the same, even if he did seem to care about you as a person. Baum wrote so much bc (he needed money, yes, but also:) kids would send him questions in fan-mail, and he would proceed to answer them via new novels. so he never planned to make more Oz books, he just (wasnt good with money and also) was routinely inspired by the kids who wrote to him and would write the stuff they wanted to learn about Oz and whatnot

okay so, "The Wizard of Oz" has an illustrator, W. W. Denslow. in the book, Dorothy is confirmed to be wearing a blue-white gingham dress (she changes outfits tho, she doesnt always wear the same dress all 14 books like she's some cartoon character); but im pretty sure her hair was all Denslow(? i could be remembering wrong. p sure im not tho??). this is what the 1939 movie based her appearance off of. so i can see why youd go "she doesnt look like Glinda or Elphaba"
BUT Denslow and Baum started feuding. so for the rest of the Oz books that Baum wrote, he had a different illustrator by the name of John R. Neil
and Neil decided to give Dorothy for every one of the books he illustrated (so, 13 of Baum's books to Denslow's 1 book of Baum's) a cute lil blonde bob, making her look like what i assume blonde-Glinda looked like as a child. i think she'd approve lol
so!! Dorothy very much looks like a trendy little Glinda, with her cute blonde bob, her fashionable drop-waist dress, and bows for most of the Baum series, actually!
(also, Neil had a preference for dressing Dorothy in this red and polka-dot number, but, again, she does wear other outfits)

she's the Princess of Oz. she eventually appears in the second book of the series. she rules Oz after the Wizard
she's actually a really interesting transwoman allegory too. (spoilers for a book from the early 1900s?) she was born a little girl named Ozma, but has a spell put on her as a baby to be genderbent and was socially raised as a little boy under a different name, and she later realizes who she truly is: a girl. she finds the transformation scary, as she returns to her girl-form she always truly was, but she feels better and more herself now that she is Ozma again. i dont think L. Frank Baum intentionally wrote her to be a trans allegory, but you can very obviously see why our trans elders fucking LOVED Ozma back in the early 1900s
also, she has a similar "sir, you fucked up" relationship with the Wizard as Elphaba*. and, also like Elphaba, Ozma politically tries to make things in Oz better (just.. unlike Elphaba, Ozma has the power and support to do just that p much asap)
* (edit for contextual clarification on how the Wizard fucked up: the Wizard fucked up with Ozma because he is ultimately and p directly the reason why she was genderbent/hidden. he deposed of her family and sent her away. Baum decided later on to backtrack a little bit on this(?) because he wanted to bring back the Wizard and, in order for Baum to do that, has to try to not make him SO terribly horrible??? so like. Ozma does end up forgiving him and tolerates him amd he's nicer, later on, within the books. but i doubt any modern adaptation of the books would follow that, personally. even as a kid, i went "bullshit" and headcanoned that Ozma fucking hated the guy and, at best, MAYBE tolerated him for Dorothy, but overall did not like him for justifiable reasons! i think the direction society seems to have taken the Wizard is interesting, and i wouldnt be surprised if there was at least one future adaptation that made him The Bad Guy in a very Rumplestiltskin in the Once Upon A Time TV show kind of way. but like. in the books, they do END UP getting along. i just forever disagree with Baum on that lol i think the Wizard fucked up, and in book 2 of the series (the one where Ozma is, y'know, introduced), it is obvious the Wizard FUCKED UP. but yeah. also, Ozma does get her dad back. her mom was kind of never in the picture to begin with, specifically in a Ponyo's Mom kind of way, like, she made Oz and then left it for her husband and kid to rule, so. yeah. im getting off track. my point is the Wizard did a full-on coup on her family and then banished her and genderbent her so no one would recognize that she had claim to the throne he was sitting on!! he fucked up! so, like, i personally hc that Elphaba founded the "i hate the Wizard" club to which everyone slowly joined, like Fieyro and etc, and Ozma is their youngest member. the Wizard did both Elphie and Ozma so dirty, omfg)
it also should be mentioned, Ozma in NBC's "Emerald City" was casted as Black (her actress being Jordan Loughran). so, though Ozma does not have green skin (but also? neither did the Wicked Witch of the West in the books, she wasn't green there. that was a 1939 film decision to make her green. so! Ozma could be green!! why not!), but she does have Black features to theoretically remind Glinda of Cynthia Eviro's Elphaba when you consider that casting. or, if you prefer a Jewish!Elphaba casting, a'la Idina Menzel's Elphaba, i think Ozma's book design works well to interpretively parallel those features too. or both, if you like the sound of a Black-Jewish Elphaba and Ozma paralleling lol
(edit, because i thought i mentioned this but? no?? i didnt?? i must have misclicked or something to have deleted the paragraph. im so sorry, here you go:) also, when Ozma was a boy, she was basically enslaved to her jailor of a caretaker. which one could interpret as "oh, a Cinderella story!", sure. but, with a Black Ozma, it does read as an intergenerational grief-formed power-fantasy that is both empowering and poignant for Ozma to have ran away from her enslavement and gone on to become a princess afterwards. to any Black folks who may be going "is this going to trigger me?" about Ozma having been a child-slave, i remind you that Baum wrote this intentionally for children, so, no, the books do not sit in the trauma and horror of enslavement, but whether or not it would trigger you yourself is up to your discretion. i will say, Baum did NOT write the American Girls' Addy of his time (context: a children's book about a child-slave that does go into the horrors, some, though in a kid-friendly way) or Louis Sachar's Holes (i asssume i dont have explain Holes since its movie was such a hit), i remember it as even more kid-friendly than either of those also-children's books, so i would assume most people would be fine? but you are responsible for your own mental well-being, i urge you to confirm if it is fine for yourself however you need to do that. but, yes, you can use this backstory as further evidence for your Ozma being Black, of course! you can have Ozma be Black regardless, but if you want this as further evidence, go ahead! and also, it does parallel Ozma to Elphaba in the sense that Elphaba's family mistreats Elphaba! (i will, regardless of if you prefer a Jewish and/or Black Elphaba, add that doing so is also a nice "fuck you" to Baum in how, being a white man of the late 1800s and early 1900s, did end up throwing in racist and/or antisemitic caricatures here and there within his 14 books, unfortunately. i, an Indigenous American, remember as a child still immensely enjoying Oz despite Baum being racist towards Native Americans. if youre curious on the egregious level of it all and if the story could still be enjoyable, id say it's in the realm of Peter Pan, Willy Wonka, and Matilda of "wow. that is shitty. im going to pretend this thing i love is good instead via cognitive dissonance")
regardless, in John R Neil's illustrations, Ozma does have black hair, so that too coincides with modern understandings of Elphaba
(there is also her appearance in Disney's "Return to Oz", performed by Emma Ridley, where she is blonde. but, though i love that spooky movie, that's neither here nor there. as far as im aware, only in that movie has Ozma not had black hair)

Summary: Penelope hosts a brunch, Derek tells Spencer not to force you to talk to him. You make a new friend with a client, they convince you to go to the brunch.

Youâve been avoiding every time Derek invites you to go out with the BAU team since the embarrassing incident at the bar. Each time you decline, you can hear the disappointment in his voice, but the anxiety bubbling up in your chest whenever you think about seeing Spencer again is enough to keep you from saying yes. The embarrassment of that night still haunts you, and every time Derek mentions the team, you feel your heart squeeze with panic.Â
To keep your mind off everything, you throw yourself into your work, accepting new clients and piling on extra projects. You stay late at the office, ensuring your schedule is so packed that you donât have time to think about anything but deadlines, designs, and color schemes. Itâs easier to focus on creating beautiful spaces for other people than it is to deal with the mess inside your own head.Â
Meanwhile, Spencer is struggling. Ever since that night at the bar, the memory of you running out haunts him. He keeps replaying the look on Derekâs face, the way you bolted the second he walked in, and it twists his gut with guilt. But itâs not just that momentâheâs also haunted by the memory of how he left you all those years ago, how he slipped out of your bed without a word, too scared to stay and too ashamed to face you. The weight of those two moments presses down on him, making it hard to focus on anything else.
Spencer's work starts to suffer. During cases, heâs distracted, zoning out during briefings and losing his train of thought mid-sentence. Hotch notices first, his brows knitting with concern as he watches Spencer fumble through his notes during a meeting. JJ, too, picks up on the change, her subtle glances in his direction filled with quiet worry. They donât push himâyetâbut Spencer knows theyâre watching, waiting for him to say something. But he doesnât. He just keeps burying it, trying to push it all down.
Spencer also finds himself trying to be around Derek more often, finding excuses to stop by his desk or catch him after work. He never outright asks about you, but itâs clear thatâs why heâs hovering. Whenever Derek casually mentions having seen you, Spencerâs eyes light up, a flicker of hope in the midst of his guilt. But Derekâs updates are always brief, never giving away too much. He knows youâre still hurting, and heâs not about to let Spencer think everything is fine when itâs not.
Spencer hovered near Derek's desk, tapping his fingers nervously on the edge as Derek typed away at his computer. The bullpen was quiet for once, just the low hum of conversation in the background. Spencer cleared his throat, but didnât say anything right away, trying to come up with something that didnât sound too obvious.
âHey, uh, Derek,â Spencer started, his voice a little too casual. âYou have any plans this weekend?â
Derek didnât even look up, a small smirk tugging at the corners of his mouth. He knew exactly what this was about, but he played along. âYeah, got a few things going on,â he replied, his fingers still tapping at the keys. âWhy, you got something in mind, Pretty Boy?â
Spencer shifted his weight from one foot to the other, his eyes darting around the room as if he wasnât really sure what to say next. âNo, I just... thought maybe we could grab a drink or something.â He paused for a beat. âOr, you know, if youâre hanging out with anyone else...?â
Derek chuckled softly, finally glancing up at Spencer with a knowing look. âAnyone else, huh?â he said, leaning back in his chair. âYou mean, like Y/N?â
Spencerâs face flushed immediately, his hand rubbing awkwardly at the back of his neck. âI mean... I wasnât... just curious,â he stammered, avoiding eye contact.
Derek sighed, leaning forward on his desk and crossing his arms. âLook, man, she wonât just magically want to see you. You know that, right?â
Spencerâs face fell, the small flicker of hope that had sparked just moments ago snuffed out. He swallowed hard, nodding. âYeah, I know,â he muttered, his voice barely audible. âI just... I guess I wanted to make sure sheâs okay.â
After a long silence, Derek finally spoke up again. âLook, man,â he said, his voice a little gentler now. âYou canât keep hovering around me, hoping Iâll tell you sheâs suddenly okay with everything. Itâs gonna take time. And youâve got to give her space.â
Spencer exhaled shakily, running a hand through his hair. âI know,â he whispered.Â
Derek gave him a small nod, watching as Spencer turned to leave, his shoulders slumped under the weight of everything left unsaid. But just before Spencer walked away, Derek called after him.
âHey, Pretty Boy,â Derek said, his tone a little softer now. âFor what itâs worth... I think sheâll come around. But youâve gotta be patient. Let her come to you when sheâs ready.â
Spencer looked back at Derek, a faint glimmer of hope in his eyes again, but this time tempered with the understanding that it might take more time than heâd like. âThanks, Derek,â he said quietly, before turning and walking back to his desk, his mind still racing with thoughts of you.
At this point, the rest of the team is fully aware of why you keep declining their invitations and why Spencerâs been so off lately. Penelope, in particular, canât stand seeing anyone so miserable. After hearing about your history with Spencer from Derek, sheâs taken it upon herself to figure out how to fix this mess. Penelopeâs always been a sucker for a happy ending, and she refuses to believe that this is how your story should end.
So, she starts plotting. She ropes Derek into her schemes, convincing him that if anyone can get you two to reconcile, itâs them. Derek, though hesitant at first, agrees. He knows you, and he knows Spencer, and as much as he wants to stay out of it, he also wants both of his friends to be happy.Â
Penelope sat at her desk, typing furiously away, when Derek walked up, leaning against the doorway with his arms crossed, watching her with a raised brow.
"Alright, Penelope, spill it," Derek said, voice low with suspicion. "What are you up to?"
Penelopeâs fingers paused on the keyboard as she slowly turned to face him, her lips curling into a mischievous grin. âI have no idea what you mean,â she said sweetly, though her eyes betrayed her scheming.
Derek sighed, shaking his head. âCome on, donât play dumb with me. I know you too well. Youâve been up to something ever since that mess at the bar.â
She sighed dramatically, leaning back in her chair. âOkay, fine. Maybe Iâm plotting just a little, but it's for the greater good.â She sat up straighter, eyes gleaming. âI mean, you want Y/N and Spencer to make up, donât you?â
Derek hesitated, running a hand over his head. âLook, itâs not like I donât want that, but... youâve met Y/N. Sheâs not going to be happy if we force them together.â
Penelope waved her hand dismissively. âPish posh! Iâm not forcing anything. Iâm simply creating a situation where fate can do its thing.â She leaned in closer, lowering her voice conspiratorially. âPicture this: we invite Y/N to one of my brunches, or maybe to your next team gathering, and oh! Surprise! Spencerâs there. They bump into each other, sparks fly, andâboom! Reconciliation.â
Derek raised an eyebrow, clearly skeptical. âYou really think itâs that simple?â
Penelope's eyes widened in exaggerated innocence. âOf course not. But itâs better than both of them moping around like lovesick teenagers.â
Derek sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. âMama, I want them to figure it out, but Y/Nâs... sheâs been through a lot. I donât want to push her too hard. If she finds out weâve been scheming, sheâs going to be pissed. You have no idea how stubborn she can be.â
Penelope leaned forward, placing her hands flat on her desk. âWhich is exactly why we need to be subtle about this, my sexy, sculpted cupid. Weâre not going to push them. Weâre just going to nudge them in the right direction. And if it doesnât work? Then we back off. But I refuse to sit by and watch Spencer be miserable, and know sheâs miserable too, when we could help.â
Derek looked down at her, his jaw tightening as he considered it. âAnd what if Y/N doesnât want to see him? She hasnât exactly been jumping at the chance to hang out with the team since that night.â
Penelope shrugged, giving him a hopeful smile. âThen we let it be. But Derek, what if this is the closure they both need? Or better yet, another chance? We owe it to them to try.â
Derek groaned, knowing she wasnât going to let it go. âAlright, fine. But if this backfires, Garcia, youâre taking the blame.â
Penelope grinned triumphantly, clapping her hands together. âTrust me, Hot Stuff, it wonât backfire. This is going to work.â
Derek shook his head, laughing under his breath as he turned to leave. âYou better be right.â
Penelopeâs voice followed him as he walked out. âOh, Iâm always right when it comes to matters of the heart, Derek Morgan. Just wait and see!âÂ
Derek muttered under his breath, âWeâll see about that.â But deep down, he couldnât help but hope she was right.
Their plan starts simpleâjust trying to get you both in the same room again, even if itâs by accident. As the wheels of their plan start turning, both you and Spencer remain blissfully unaware of their scheming. Youâre too busy drowning in work, and Spencerâs too tangled up in his own guilt to notice the subtle nudges Penelope and Derek are starting to orchestrate.Â

The lunchtime crowd hummed quietly around you as you sat across from Derek at your favorite corner table. The restaurant had always been your go-to, a cozy, familiar space where you could relax and enjoy the food without worrying about the outside world. Today, though, you were feeling anything but relaxed. Derek was giving you that lookâthe one that said he was about to bring up something youâd been trying to avoid.
âSo,â Derek began, cutting into his sandwich, his voice casual, but his eyes watching you carefully. âPenelopeâs throwing one of her infamous brunches this weekend. Thought you might want to come.â
You sighed, already knowing where this was going. âI donât know, Derek. Iâve been really busy with work, andââ
Derek held up a hand, interrupting you gently. âI know, I know. Youâve been taking on a lot of new projects lately.â He paused, his tone softening. âBut youâve been avoiding hanging out with the team since... well, you know.â
Your heart tensed a little, but you quickly pushed the feeling away, forcing a smile as you sipped your drink. âIâm just not ready to jump back into all that. Itâs been nice keeping my head down and staying focused.â
Derek leaned forward, his eyes full of understanding but also a hint of concern. âI get it, sugar. Iâm not saying you should force yourself into anything. But maybe... maybe itâs time to let yourself have a little fun again. No pressure, just brunch with some really cool people. Penelopeâs dying to see you again, and so is the rest of the team.â
You hesitated, your fingers tapping lightly against the rim of your glass. The thought of seeing everyone again made your stomach twist. But what if Spencer was there? What if you had to see him? You werenât sure if you could handle that yet.
âIs Spencer going to be there?â you asked, your voice quieter than you intended.
Derek paused, his fork hovering over his plate. He looked at you thoughtfully before answering, not wanting to lie but also not wanting to overwhelm you. âHonestly? Probably not.â
Your brows furrowed. âProbably?â
Derek shrugged, setting his fork down. âI havenât heard anything about him coming, and knowing Spencer, heâs been pretty distracted lately. I doubt heâll make it. But... even if he did, it wouldnât be about him. Itâd be about you. Hanging out with people who really want to get to know you better.â
You bit your lip, torn between wanting to stay in your bubble and knowing Derek was right. Youâd been keeping yourself so busy with work that you hadnât given yourself much time to just... exist outside of it. And as much as you hated to admit it, you really did like hanging out with Derek and Penelope and the rest of the team.Â
But there was still that nagging worryâwhat if seeing them all again just brought back memories of Spencer? Of what happened at the bar, and everything that came before it?
Derek seemed to sense your hesitation, and he reached across the table, placing his hand on yours. âHey, youâre not gonna be alone in this, alright? Weâve got your back. And if it gets weird or uncomfortable, weâll bail. No questions asked.â
You met his gaze, seeing the sincerity there, the way he genuinely wanted to help you move past this. And honestly, maybe he was right. You couldnât keep avoiding the world forever. Eventually, youâd have to face thingsâeven the parts that hurt.
After a long moment, you sighed, leaning back in your chair. âAlright,â you said, though your voice still held a trace of uncertainty. âIâll think about it.â
Derek grinned, clearly pleased with your response, even if it wasnât a solid yes just yet. âThatâs all Iâm asking, sweetheart. Just think about it.â
You smiled, though your mind was still turning over the idea. It wasnât a decision you were ready to make just yet, but the fact that you were even considering it felt like a step in the right direction.

Derek didnât waste any time. He leaned in a little closer, his voice lowering so their conversation wouldnât be overheard by the rest of the team. âListen, man, I wanted to give you a heads-up about something.â
Spencer sat up a little straighter, already sensing that this wasnât just a casual conversation. âWhat is it?â he asked, his voice tinged with concern.
Derek rubbed the back of his neck, weighing his words carefully. âY/N might be coming to Penelopeâs brunch this weekend,â he said, watching Spencerâs reaction closely.
Spencerâs eyes widened slightly, his breath catching as he processed the news. âShe is?â His voice was quiet, a mixture of hope and nerves in his tone.
âYeah, but hereâs the thing,â Derek continued, his tone more serious now. âYouâve gotta give her space, man. Let her come to you when sheâs ready. Sheâs not gonna want you chasing after her or trying to force a conversation. If she shows up, itâs a big deal for her.â
Spencer gave Derek a sharp look. "I'm not a child, Morgan. I can handle this."

You showed up to Penelopeâs place early, just as promised, with Derek by your side. He immediately went to help her hang up string lights while you and Penelope stayed together, fussing over the final touches. The atmosphere was lively and fun, and you were glad you came today.
When you entered her kitchen, Penelope lit up. "Oh my God! Look at you! I am in love with your outfit!" she exclaimed, her hands clapping together in excitement. You grinned, feeling the compliment ease some of your nerves.
âYouâre one to talk,â you gestured towards her own colorful ensemble, the vibrant red and playful green perfectly matching her quirky style. âYou look like you stepped out of a fashion magazineâone that I desperately need a subscription to."
Penelope twirled dramatically, her beret perched at the perfect angle, making the charm bracelet on her wrist dangle and jingle. "Stop it, weâre just the most fashionable duo, arenât we?" She winked at you before handing you a mimosa. "Okay, now drink up. We've got some brunch magic to make happen."
As you sipped the bubbly drink, you couldnât help but feel the knot of anxiety loosen in your chest. You and Penelope moved around the kitchen, arranging pastries and fruit trays, talking about everything except the one thing you knew was still looming in the backgroundâSpencer. Penelope didnât miss a beat. âGirls, you remember Y/N!â she called over, practically skipping as she gestured towards you. âSheâs my stylish new partner-in-crime today.â
Elle and JJ turned toward you with warm, inviting smiles. JJ was the first to step forward, her kindness evident in her expression. âY/N! Of course we remember. Iâm glad youâre here!â She opened her arms for a quick, friendly hug, which you returned, grateful for her easygoing energy.
Elle followed suit, her smile softer but no less welcoming. âGood to see you again,â she said, giving you a nod of approval as she took in your outfit. âYouâre definitely keeping up with Penelope in the style department.â
You laughed lightly, feeling the tension start to ease as you hugged Elle too. âI had to step up my game, knowing sheâd outshine all of us,â you joked, throwing a playful glance at Penelope, who was already bouncing back towards the food to check on the platters.
Derek, meanwhile, appeared from the other side of the room, finishing up with the string lights. He clapped his hands together, grinning as he walked over. âLadies! Looks like weâre in for quite the brunch.â
JJ raised her glass in response, smiling. âCheers to that. Itâs been way too long since weâve had a proper get-together.â
Elle nodded in agreement. âLetâs hope the food tastes as good as it smells. You and Penelope outdid yourselves this time.â
Penelope shot her a cheeky grin. âOh, honey, just wait until you taste it. Y/Nâs been helping tooâsheâs a natural!â
You felt a small flush creep into your cheeks at the compliment, but the easy laughter and casual conversation swirling around you made it hard to feel too self-conscious. It was starting to feel like maybe this day wouldnât be as nerve-wracking as youâd feared.
Next to arrive, in a much more subdued manner, were Hotch and Haley. Hotch entered with his usual calm presence, while Haley smiled warmly, her arm linked with his. She radiated a gentle energy that put you at ease immediately. As they approached, Hotch offered a small nod of greeting, his serious demeanor softened just slightly by the casual setting.
âPenelope, this place looks amazing,â Haley said, her voice filled with admiration as she took in the setup. âItâs so cozy and beautiful.â
Penelope beamed, twirling slightly as she accepted the compliment. âWhy, thank you! Y/N helped with all the setup. Weâre a dynamic duo today,â she said, sending you a proud wink.
Haley turned her attention to you, her smile genuine as she extended her hand. âY/N, itâs great to meet you. Iâm Aaronâs wife, Haley. Penelope mentioned you have an eye for design, and I can definitely see it.â
You shook her hand, grateful for her easy manner. âThank you, Haley. Iâm glad you like it. Itâs nice to meet you too.â
Hotch gave you a polite smile as well. âGood to see you, Y/N,â he said simply, his voice carrying its usual quiet authority but without the edge it often had in more formal settings.
âItâs good to see you too, Hotch,â you replied, matching his composed tone.
The group began to chat casually, the energy shifting to a more relaxed rhythm with Haleyâs calm presence balancing Penelopeâs excitable nature. You found yourself blending in more easily than you expected, the unease you felt earlier starting to fade away as the conversation flowed naturally.

Spencer offered a small, awkward smile, his hands shoved deep into the pockets of his jacket as he gave Derek a polite nod. "Yeah, driving... not my favorite thing."
Your heart hammered in your chest as you saw Spencerâlooking the same, yet different. His hair was longer, his expression a little more weathered. He seemed hesitant, as if unsure of his place in the room, but when his eyes quickly scanned the space and landed on you, they widened ever so slightly.
Derek caught the momentary tension between you and Spencer, his jaw tightening subtly. He turned to the rest of the group, his tone trying to smooth over the sudden shift in energy. âAlright, everybody, make room for these two. Brunch is waiting to be devoured.â
Penelope quickly stepped forward to greet Gideon and Spencer with an exuberant smile, acting oblivious to the quiet storm brewing between you and the man now standing only a few feet away.
You swallowed hard, forcing yourself to breathe, and turned away, praying no one could see the turmoil swirling in your chest.
Gideon, ever the perceptive one, glanced around the room, his eyes briefly scanning each face before they settled on you. He tilted his head slightly, the hint of a curious smile playing on his lips. Without missing a beat, he broke away from the small group forming near the entrance and made his way over to you.
âHello,â Gideon greeted you warmly, extending a hand. âI donât believe weâve met. Iâm Jason Gideon.â
You blinked, momentarily startled by the direct introduction, but quickly reached out to shake his hand. "Y/N," you replied with a polite smile, though your voice wavered slightly, the nerves still simmering beneath the surface. "Itâs nice to meet you."
Gideonâs eyes crinkled at the corners as he studied you for a moment, seeming to pick up on the tension you were trying so hard to conceal. âDerek speaks highly of you,â he added kindly, his tone gentle, as if sensing that you needed a little bit of reassurance.
Your stomach twisted, but you nodded in response. âHeâs a good friend,â you said, glancing in Derekâs direction for a split second before focusing back on Gideon.Â
The conversation had inadvertently drawn Spencer's attention. From the corner of your eye, you could see him turn slightly, his gaze shifting from Gideon to you. His posture stiffened, and though he remained rooted to his spot near the door, his eyes were now locked on you, a flicker of recognition passing through them.

âWell,â Gideon said after a brief pause, âit was a pleasure to meet you, Y/N.â He gave you a final smile before turning to rejoin the others, leaving you standing there with your pulse racing and the unmistakable feeling of Spencerâs eyes still on you.
You exhaled slowly, trying to steady yourself. This was exactly what you had been trying to avoid, but now there was no escaping it. You made brief eye contact, nodding in acknowledgement as Spencer gave you one of his infamous tight lipped smiles.Â
Spencer stood frozen in place, his breath catching in his throat the moment Gideonâs conversation with you drew his attention. The sight of youâstanding there, laughing politely at something Gideon saidâwas like a punch to the gut. He had been preparing himself for this, trying to steel his nerves, but nothing couldâve braced him for the actual moment of seeing you again.
You looked incredible, more radiant than he remembered, and the sight of you stirred up everything he had been trying to push down. But his feet remained firmly planted on the floor, rooted in the swirl of emotions tightening his chest.Â
Spencer felt a wave of heat rush over him. You looked so goodâbetter than heâd ever allowed himself to imagine in the countless nights heâd lain awake thinking of you. That plaid dress you wore, the way it cinched at your waist, how your hair framed your face perfectlyâevery detail made him dizzy. Maybe thatâs why Derek doesnât want me to push things, Spencer thought bitterly, feeling the weight of his suspicions grow. Maybe he wants her for himself.
Spencerâs hands tightened around his glass, the icy chill of his now cold tea doing nothing to cool the heat rising in his chest. He knew he was being ridiculous, but the thought wouldnât leave him. It stuck in his mind, festering as he watched Derekâs casual affection toward you. It didnât help that you smiled at Derek the way you used to smile at him.Â
When you excused yourself to make more tea, Spencerâs mind was spinning too much to stay seated. He couldnât let the jealousy take control, but it was too late; it had already wrapped around his thoughts, suffocating any sense of logic. Before he realized it, his legs had carried him from the table, following you into the kitchen.
The moment you walked into the cozy kitchen that you'd helped Penelope prepare, the warm smell of the tea leaves filled the air. The clink of teacups and the sound of water boiling were the only things breaking the quiet of the room. You didnât notice Spencer following you at first, too caught up in refilling the teapot and enjoying the brief solitude from the tableâs conversations.
Spencer hesitated at the entrance to the kitchen, watching you from behind as you moved gracefully between the counter and the kettle. His heart was pounding, the thoughts racing in his mind, torn between his guilt over the past and the irrational jealousy clouding his judgment.
Finally, he spoke, his voice soft but thick with everything he was holding back. âY/N.â
You turned at the sound of his voice, surprised to see him standing there, clearly not expecting this moment. The tension between you two was palpable, hanging in the air like a weight neither of you was ready to address.
"Spencer," you acknowledged softly, your hands still on the teapot as you stared at him. The awkwardness was undeniable, but there was something else tooâyears of unspoken words, regrets, and emotions neither of you had faced.
Spencer swallowed hard, his throat tight as he stepped further into the kitchen. "I... I just wanted toâum, I need more tea," he said, fumbling for words, clearly not sure how to approach the conversation.
âOh, okay,â you replied, surprised that was all he said but pleasantly relieved at the simplicity of it. "I can make you a cup if you want."
Your offer seemed to melt some of the tension in Spencerâs demeanor. His expression softened as he realized you were still the same kind person heâd fallen for all those years ago. âThank you, thatâs really kind of you.â
You nodded, reaching for the teapot. "Milk and sugar? Honey?"
He let out a small chuckle. "Yeah, all of it, please. I like it sweet."
âI know,â you mumbled, the words slipping out naturally. Youâd seen Spencer drink his overly sugary coffee so many times back in college, his sweet tooth no secret to you.
Spencer rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly, fidgeting with his hair as he tried to keep the conversation light. "Do you still drink coffee? Or is it all tea now?"
You shrugged, pouring the tea into his cup. âI do both. No need for all that caffeine today.â You laughed softly. âFor work, though? That definitely requires coffee.â
Spencer smiled, feeling a little more at ease. "Yeah, I get that. My bodyâs probably made up of pure coffee by now," he joked, happy heâd chosen to stick with casual conversation rather than diving into the deep, painful history between you two again.Â
Maybe Derek was rightâmaybe you would come to him when you were ready. But as soon as the thought crossed his mind, his heart sank. Derek. He remembered the way you laughed with him, how easily youâd fallen into a rhythm with him at the table.Â
The jealousy heâd managed to suppress earlier crept back in, though he did his best to push it down again. You were being kind, and he didnât want to ruin this moment. But still, the thought lingeredâwas Derek the one holding you back from wanting to talk to him?
But youâd already turned around, catching the pensive look on Spencerâs face. "Everything alright?" you asked, a little concerned by the way his expression had shifted.
âYeah,â he said quickly, looking up at you with a soft, almost hesitant smile. "So, uh, you and Derek, huh?"
You blinked, tilting your head in confusion. âWhat do you mean?â
Spencerâs fingers fidgeted with the edge of his cup as he mumbled, âHow long have you guys been... seeing each other?â
You burst out laughing, surprising him. "Me and Derek? No, no, no," you said, waving your hands dismissively as you continued to chuckle. "Heâs my best friend. Thatâs all."
âOh," he nodded, clearly unsure. "I just thoughtââ
But you cut him off before he could finish, handing him his tea with a small smile. âTeaâs ready. Here.â Your voice was soft but awkward as you backed out of the kitchen. âSee you out there.â
With that, you made your way back to the brunch party, leaving Spencer standing in the kitchen, processing what had just happened.Â
That was the end of your conversation for the day, but it was enough for him. Spencerâs heart felt lighter than it had in weeks.Â
He could work with this.
