🍉Fics for Gaza
Inspired by the fan Gotchas for Gaza and @ficsforgaza, i (ao3 user namelessflower) will be joining @ficsforgaza's initiative where fic writers write fics in exchange for proofs of donation to valid Palestinian fundraisers.
I will be offering: Fics, poems about a character/pairing, or simple pfp icons/avatars of a character/pairing.
Fandoms available: any MXTX, JWQS, ORV, JJK, Genshin, RGU and more (see full list here).
HOW IT WORKS:
1. DONATE to any verified Palestinian fundraiser from this list: GazaFunds, Gaza Municipality's water campaign, eSIMS for Gaza (or Crips for Esims for Gaza).
I will also accept donations to Sudan (Khartoum Aid Kitchen), separate from @ficsforgaza's initiative.
2. DM me PROOF OF YOUR DONATION - a screenshot of your donation receipt or confirmation email (*please edit out your personal details e.g. full name, bank/credit card details!)
3. DM me YOUR PROMPT, specifying fic/poem/pfp, and any specific likes or dislikes/triggers/things you want me to avoid.
Limited to 3 slots for fics + 3 slots for poems + 5 pfp slots at a time.
(After I finish the first round of prompts, I'll open more slots later on when I have more time. I'll do my best to finish your prompt within a few weeks, but please be patient with me if I need more time and understand that longer fics may take 1-2 months as I am busy irl + writing for multiple Gotchas for Gaza at the same time🙇)

I will do: sfw, nsfw*, canonverse, modern AU, canon divergent, other AUs, genderbend, character study, angst, fluff, humour/comedy, emotional hurt/comfort, hurt/comfort, heavy angst
I will not do: dead dove, underage, incest, r*pe/noncon/dubcon, omegaverse, mpreg, or certain kinks that im not comfortable personally writing
(*note: Only adults (18 and above) can request nsfw. Minors cannot request nsfw. Please have your age somewhere in your bio/carrd or I will reject your nsfw request!)
FIC INFO:
for SFW: every $1 = at least 150 words, capped at ~3000 words (for me to avoid burnout)
for NSFW: every $1 = at least 100 words, capped at ~2500 words (for me to avoid burnout)
you may donate enough more for multiple prompts, but please specify how much is for which prompt (e.g. you can donate $15 for a 1000 word nsfw fic ($10) + a 750 word sfw fic ($5)
samples of my fics on my ao3

I am legitimately confused by repeated comments that ORV's opening is slow or boring or uninteresting, especially people who say you need to read [insert some very large number of pages/chapters] to get to the "good" parts. I've seen this on multiple socials at this point and I originally wrote this post months ago, but recent potential news has brought back people saying this again, particularly in recommending it to other people/trying to get other people into it.
I would personally argue that ORV has a good opening. A very good opening. And the early part of it is very good, too.
ORV opens with a literal train of angst, attempted friendship, workplace harassment (Sangah getting harassed by her boss), some neat Korean folklore (dokkaebis hello), graphic violence (remember when Bihyung just kills the president on TV?), a group of people in a subway attempting to beat an old woman to death, Dokja winning a pissing contest with a teenage edgelord, a bunch of people getting murdered, bonding in times in despair over a really unique form of problem solving, a man breaking open subway doors with his bare arms, young love, and magic, fleeing onto a bridge that gets exploded to bits by an evil gremlin, a horde of zombies appearing, the protagonist getting new magic powers, and then his getting held by the neck over said broken bridge in a complex back and forth with the "true" story protagonist before getting dropped into the mouth of a giant sea monster.
It covers topics like the limits of human compassion in times of strife, the complicated presence of the military (Dokja hated his time being drafted v Hyunsung's military leadership doesn't save anyone), international relations (Sangah is learning Spanish), trope subversion (I mean it is and isn't the entire book and Dokja's character, but he's constantly trying to be 5-10 steps ahead of what's going on, including literally fleeing Joonghyuk until Joonghyuk grabs him by the collar), workplace harassment, bullying, and it's all taking place during multiple apocalypse scenarios.
This is the like first 11 chapters of the book. And it never stops. There are "slower" moments, moments where characters take a breather (like it takes a while for Dokja to negotiate his contract with Bihyung, which is slow if you ignore the fact Dokja is arguing with an interdimensional being/alien for the limits of his own life and autonomy in the most dangerous streaming event imaginable, knowing he may still die if he gambles wrong on his personal wikipedia brain), but it's still frequently confrontational, whether that confrontation is about what characters mean to each other, what lives are at stake, finding your purpose in life, adaptability to complex circumstances, overcoming trauma and self-doubt...
And it's more intense in a way in the manhwa adaptation because you can clearly see most of it visualized (e.g., how visually wrecked the characters get, how young the kids are, how terrifying the monsters are, how scary the odds are, and how dangerous Dokja's gambles can really get with a fickle streaming audience), and Sleepy-C's art is gorgeous.
I just have to wonder (though this is more of a rhetorical question), what on earth do people consider fast? Because I am quite honestly terrified of what the answer is.
Like I get that ORV is long. It can be hard to recommend very long books to folks (and as the manhwa keeps going, long comics). To each their own, everyone is different, what appeals to me won't appeal to others. But there's a difference between "it's hard to recommend a very long work to someone" and "it's hard to recommend something that's long and takes a while to get into", and maybe folks are just writing the former a bit weirdly. I completely understand having trouble recommending long series to people. Also ORV has a very complex plot and I don't blame folks having trouble recommending that. I'm writing fic for later parts of orv and other manhwa and I dread explaining all the context for all that to someone who hasn't read them.
That being said, ORV has a very good introduction. Both chapter 1 of the novel and episode 1 of the manhwa are very good. They're not perfect, I can't say I was hooked from the immediate moment I started reading the page, but both of them have good introductions and it doesn't stop, and there's stuff to love in just about every chapter/episode, and I was definitely hooked enough by the time I finished to keep going to chapter/episode 2. Chapter 1 of the novel has great angst and character building, and it's funny and sweet and tragic. When I first read Dokja trying, earnestly, to recommend TWSA and getting harassed about it and worrying it will hurt this art and artist he cares about, but not being able to do much else to give thanks for this experience because of his circumstances, I cried. The first page/episode of the manhwa has them delicious boys love vibes and gorgeous art (and cute baby Dokja, I die for him), and the promise of a fascinating story ahead, and then the following page/episode has more gorgeous art and angst and great characters (combining them cause the first page feels sort of more like a teaser than a first page, though Episode 0 ends with a spread of Kimcom that makes me tear up). We'll unfortunately never know if I'd have loved ORV as much if I'd read the novel first, but I like to think I would cause ORV's opening is just that good.
I just truly, truly do not understand the sentiment that idk the opening and the first [insert large number of pages/chapters] aren't good or interesting or engaging enough. Maybe I'm out of touch. To each their own on what appeals, maybe I'm built different (doubt it though) but it just feels kind of dismissive of ORV's opening, in both the novel and the manhwa, which are both really good. Will it win over everyone? No. It's fine if you weren't grabbed by the opening or the first [insert however many pages/chapters/arcs]. It's fine if you took a while, even a long while to get into it, or never really did, and maybe don't like the manhwa, which is a great gateway into the story, or don't like the novel for whatever reason and prefer the manhwa. And at the end of the day it's just random opinions online, we all have different ones. Make the posts that appeal to you on your blog, complain on your socmed, whatever. But the opening is good, it keeps you very engaged with a lot of difficult scenarios, the characters are great and fun and funny, in those parts especially, and idk why I'm supposed to pretend that's not the case.
Anyway I don't like writing complaint posts. The opening and general start are excellent and Imma go back and cry over Dokja again ty singNsong for my tears.

if the 1 month minimal commitment of reading ORV scares you, may I suggest reading ‘Kasane’, a 2 days of extremely addictive reading alternative?
kasane is a story that is insanely hard to put down as you are consistently and repeatedely blown off your mind by the most insane shit you’ve ever heard. it is a drama dressed as an horror dressed as a love letter to performing dressed as the most insane generational trauma you can think of. although it handles heavy topics and i do recommend checking the trigger warnings for overall abuse, physical violence, threats of assault etc it is also insanely good and interesting.
it is a story about soul consuming envy, bitterness, resentment. But its also about joy, love and devotion. The expressions are insane and the story does not cower from the terrifying premise it presents itself with: a terribly ugly girl’s journey through acting as she steal people’s faces with a mysterious lipstick she inherited from her deceased mother.
its 126 chapters long and i do not recommend reading it close to yourd bed time as it IS hard to put down. read kasane. goodbye.

2k23 has been a surprisingly productive year for me on the writing side of things, like, i was more or less writing at least one fic a month which is fucking nuts for anyone who knows me
so for funsies, im gonna self-promo one fic for each month of the past year (which will also double as a funsies self-curated self-promo of fics that i especially liked writing per month this year and that i recommend everyone else read bc i like attention)
(links all go to ao3; most of these fics are restricted bc i hate scrapers so rip)
January: three of cups - FFXIV / wol backstory nonsense
February: doomsday vault - Genshin / Deshret!Kaveh AU
March: sunshower - Elsword / Laby (RaS) analysis
April: an allegory in freesia - Elsword / Ain (BL) + Laby (RaS) analysis
May: only stars can be the envy of jewels - Elsword / a take on the first meeting between Clamor and Noah (CL) in Seven Tower.
June: OKAY GONNA CHEAT AND PROMO TWO FICS FOR THIS MONTH bc it's My list so I can 1) and love (you shall have) - Elsword / Noah (NP) talks to a ghost called Clamor. 2) and it will end with love - Elsword / Noah (LI) + Noah (NP) + a 10k lucid and ludicrous ramble about the intersection of loving and haunting someone.
July: memorabilia in the making - FFXIV / a fic explaining my wol's specific take on her Myste + an attempt to write wol-Fray-Myste talking civilly in the same room for longer than five minutes.
August: psalms for the forsaken - Elsword / a snapshot study of Noah in this 3rd path (sg -> pp -> NP)
September: everything has its trail - Elsword / Noah (CL) does therapy for Noah (MO); this was supposed to be funny. it was supposed to be.
October: None, technically; I was in a bad place around this time so writing took a backseat. Though June anyway has like two fics under it so it balances out numerically l o l
November: morpho butterfly - Elsword / Nisha (NL) & Clamor (MO) talk about their respective charges.
December: the clatter of niceties ringing false - ORV / KDJ analysis

right, so. if you are curious about what i'm doing -- let's have a nice ramble about what's on my agenda for the next... expanse of time.
first thing to attempt to get done: blood of the covenant chapter 2, because it's uhhh been fucking forever.
once that's done, iiii am going to reread orv, because seriously, the last time i read it was three years ago. i have forgotten many things and my ability to actually write orv has turned into... a bit of a struggle. gonna need my license to fanfic renewed. i swallowed it all in 3 days in 2020 but who knows how long it'll take me this time.
you might remember this poll i posted. iii stopped looking at it on april second, since votes seemed to be holding steady and also i sort of needed to start writing for nanowrimo. was VERY much for surprised that in the last... what, 12 hours before the poll closed, i had a sudden influx of people going in for ANOThER poll option.
this is relevant because after my i'll be diving back into the complex philosophical concept of self-love, which y'all decided to SLAM the button on, and then because the stars and clouds told me. probably not one after the other, because i jump around a lot between different projects, in general. maybe i'll alternate.
while all of this happening (and after my fun orv reread), i will probably spend a week writing madly for empty sky and uhhhh see how far I get.
and that! is my current to-do list, excluding wednesday and friday short snippets, which i hope i will be able to pick back up again.
how long will this take me? who knows. i expect june and july to be slow writing months because i want to do KDJC ORV month and also Art Fight, so uh. we'll see how much stuff i do when it's still may?

I wanna start reading ORV but the sheer size is scaring me tbh. I'm a non native english speaker, so I wouldnt be able to read that big of a book if I don't understand the words without looking shit up, would you say the language used is understandable and relatively simple, or is it more complex?
Also how long do you think it takes to read it on average?
There is very little along the lines of complicated vocabulary or prose in orv however I will say sometimes orv does get a tiny bit confusing just because the translation from Korean into English is a little bit awkward. You probably won't have to look up any specific words but sometimes you may come across sentences that don't quite parse properly. If you go in understanding that there's gonna be just a weird sentence that night not really make sense every now and then you'll probably be fine.
Its really impossible to give an estimate on average time it takes to read orv because it's so heavily variable on reading speed and amount of time per day you spend reading. It took me around three weeks while I was in the middle of a move and starting a new job. I know some people have binged it in several days. Probably for slower and more casual readers a few months is a more reasonable expectation

For the fanfic ask, 3 and 30?
3. favorite line/scene you wrote this year
Oh heck I cannot choose so here's brief parts from 2 of my fics that gave me feels when writing
Reading The Heart
[Keefe] lost his balance and nearly toppled backwards, but Tam had wrapped an arm around him, gently holding on to him as they both lowered to the ground. Tam stared down at him, his lips quivering, as if there were too many things that he wanted to say.
"Why me?" Tam asked. "Why was it me ?"
Keefe's eyes burned, but he managed to bring himself to cup his hand around Tam's cheek. "You've saved my life more times than I could count. It's my turn now to save you."
(it's about the angst)
Of Distant Dreams (That Can't Come True)
"Then you're still the same person that I know and love. You've changed, but I'm willing to get to know those parts of you. You're always going to be you." Na Bori was shorter than Lee Jihye, but at that moment, she stood so much taller.
(once again, it's about the angst)
30. favorite fandom to read fic from this year
Yknow, considering how often I write for kotlc, I don't actually read that many fic. I think my favourite fandom to read fic from would be orv, though it also happens to be my current fixation (read: has been for the past 5 months) so I may be biased

The Lost Cub (AU) Series Updates (kind of)
Around three weeks ago I got a comment on my AO3 account for Downtime Ch2. It was written in Spanish so I ran it through Google Translate.
And was slightly offended at what I read. Because it sounded like the person was complaining about an aspect of the story, which never happened before. It kinda bothered me but I thought at the same time that the translation might be wrong. So I used another translator and the comment made better sense after that.
Lesson learned: never put all your faith in Google Translate.
Speaking of accounts, I don’t know if anyone’s noticed that my fics are no longer on Fanfiction.net. It’s because I decided to remove everything and just focus on posting updates on Tumblr and AO3.
What made me decide this was the lack of feedback on Downtime Ch2. Sure it was getting hits, but it didn’t get a single comment a year after I uploaded it. My thoughts were going from ‘Did I scare/offend my readers?’ to ‘Did people actually read it or just clicked on it by mistake?’. I didn’t have a clue.
Compared to AO3, where Ch2 has the most number of comments for Downtime to date.
To stop myself from further stressing over this, I just closed shop. Deleted all my fics so I don’t have a reason to check my account hoping there’s feedback. I did this months ago and honestly, I’d forgotten exactly when because I want to move on from it.
But why am I bringing this up now? For closure, I suppose.
As for Downtime Chapter 4—well, I’m working on it, but at a very slow pace. I’m not going to make any promises that it’ll be ready by March 21 (the date I posted Chapter 3 in 2021), only that I plan to have it done by 2022.
I can’t wait to finish Downtime. But then my motivation doesn’t want the same thing.
These past months I’ve mostly been reading web novels, webtoons, manhwas and fanfics. For web novels, I tried reading a badly translated Remarried Empress and finished reading Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint.
(ORV is just—gah, I have no words for it. Interesting, is one. There is an actor AU fic in AO3 for this fandom that’s just *chef’s kiss*. It’s called “Imaginary Truths”. The manhwa has very beautiful art and has so far stayed true to the web novel.)
I also tried reading Solo Leveling (manhwa), Trash of the Count’s Family (manhwa) and Heaven’s Official Blessing (web novel) but these didn’t hold my attention as much as ORV and MDZS (web novel) did.
(I’ve noticed that the MDZS fandom is rather toxic. Stanning this character and hating on other people who aren’t stans, authors harassing other authors. Reminds me of the VLD fandom. Not that I’ve been a victim—I  don’t engage the other fans—but the posts you see here on Tumblr will give you enough idea.)
And since it’s the Presidential election in my country on May 2022, lately I’ve been watching videos of the political blogger I’ve been following. It’ll likely continue until the first half of 2022.
Yay, more things to keep me from writing.
Oh, and there’s this fic I started years back that was supposed to be an entry to madameazzure’s event. I set it aside to write A Show of Power. In the end, neither fics made it to the deadline.
Now, it’s come back to haunt me. I’ve been wondering if I should finish it one of these days just so I’d stop thinking about “nude painting session”, “mozzarella” and “two left feet”. Maybe put it under a different series.
Okay, enough with the rambling. Here’s to a better 2022, writing wise.

2. ePremium – Renters Insurance and Security Deposit … You don’t have to pay a single deposit for a new car and you don’t get charged that one too!! At some point you have to cancel your insurance coverage and have car insurance. It’s in your best interests not to let the insurance lapse and if you don’t agree to the insurance or you will not get charged for it, you can use your money to make repairs after the car accident. Some insurance companies may even allow you to have your insurance cancelled under this situation. If you have a car of higher worth than the deposit you paid for in the previous car accident, you can use a car loan to get a discount on your insurance premiums on a car loan. A car loan is a loan that is loaned to you, the lender, and to the other car’s insurance company. This may seem like a good thing and the insurance company may not have to inform you. However, you can think of car insurance as an extension.

End of Plowed Road: Winter camping for the New Year!
Tumblr media
Perhaps one of the most frustrating things about winter, outside of those dreadful family get-togethers with the side of the family you’ve spent the last 12 months avoiding, is cabin fever. There’s nothing on Netflix funny enough and no channel on YouTube catchy enough to feed that desire of exploration that often just sits and grows when the daytimes shorten and the temperatures fall. If you’re like me, you take a bunch of awful tasting Vitamin D gummies in the morning, but still find that even One-A-Day vitamins have a serving size of two if you look at the back of the bottle. Although it’s only been a few months since our last expedition, our tolerance for the rude people of Ann Arbor has reached it’s breaking point. It’s wonderful that many dress their leased Ford Escape up like Rudolph, but at least reindeer have the fucking decency to park on the roof, rather than in the middle of an entrance to a parking lot like these assholes. Wait, maybe I’m the rude one? Regardless, it was time to escape mindless-consumer-copia, to a part of the world that haven’t been told cars are driving themselves nowadays. Michigan’s beautiful upper-peninsula.
The ride up, all 4300 pounds of truck, drove against some intense winds on US-23 that began in Brighton, and lasted even after we crossed the Mackinac Bridge in St. Ignace. The fuel mileage on this truck is already bad. Like less than 15mpg bad, but taking 15mpg and pointing it against 30mph winds for 4 hours, well, I had friends in college that wouldn’t even drink that much.
On the way up, we saw an amazing rig at a gas station fueling up. Picture a lifted Ford E-Van, with some minor exo-skeleton welded around it, an empty roof-rack, a rear spare-tire carrier, ARB-like bumper armor, and a huge tool box in the back. The license plates said Washington, but the rig looked like it was ready to go across the world. We didn’t have a chance to stop the owners for a chat, or take photos, but with a rig like that you could easily live out of it and call the whole world your backyard (ignoring vast portions of ocean of course)!
Another good sign of things to come were the number of trucks hauling snowmobile trailers. Although there are plenty of trails in the lower mitten, the real fun happens in the UP, where portions of the state become accessible to snowmobiles only.
Tumblr media
Our plan from the start left us with 3 options for a place to stay once we reached St. Ignace (4.25 hours north of Ann Arbor): Mackinac Straits State Park St. Ignace (just over the Mackinac Bridge) DNR said this was open all year. Bathrooms/Showers?
Little Brevort Lake State Campground Charming town of Brevort DNR said maybe you could get in, even though it’s closed We hate campgrounds
Garnet Lake State Forest Naubinway (an hour west of St. Ignace) Nobody answered when we called for information What happened to the survivors at the summit?
Alternatively, because we are sleeping inside the truck after-all, we just find a spot and claim it as ours.
When we arrived in St. Ignace, we found that the Straits State Park was closed. Little Brevort, for as thrilling as it sounded, might be closed as well, and Garnet Lake was too far away. So we drove around, using our HemaMaps app to look for trails and roads that led to the coast. Sure enough, we found a spot near the Kewadin Casino, that was right on the coast of Lake Huron! It was down a dirt trail that nobody had been on in the last few snows so it appeared, and eventually turned into some deep frozen tracks that we’d need to safely maneuver to get to the point.
Tumblr media
Finding the spot isn’t even half the battle though. When the temperatures are at 20 degrees, and the windchill is strong enough to cut even that in half, there’s still a lot of work to do. This was the first time, Maia and I, had ever camped during the winter. Sure, as kids we can each remember staying out in our snowforts well after the sun had set, but this time nobody would have a hot bowl of soup ready for us when we were done playing.
Tumblr media
The most important and initial step in this one-night escape would be beer and dinner, in that order. Usually we’d cook, but we had an unshakable taste for pizza. On our way out of B.C’s Pizza in downtown St. Ignace, we asked the delivery driver with the lifted Jeep Grand Cherokee, where we could find firewood. Due to the danger of emerald ash borers, an invasive ash-tree murdering beetle, it’s illegal to transport wood from the lower peninsula, into the upper peninsula, but luckily there was a “guy.”
Jim, who’s retired, but sells firewood on the road just before you reach the Quality 8 Hotel, has a red and white spaniel with a nub for a tail. It’s a delightful dog, and will even open the door of Jim’s mobile home to say hello to you if you’re in need of lumber, before Jim is even aware you’re at his home. I had interrupted his night of women’s basketball, a sport he repeatedly told me he enjoys watching. That’s great Jim, but why? Why does this sport fascinate you to the point you’re explaining to me who’s playing who while standing in freezing cold temperatures in your pajama pants as your spaniel also has it’s own fascination with sniffing crotches and poking butts? Jim finally admitted that he likes women’s basketball because it’s slower and easier to watch; part of me feels like he may have come to this conclusion because he doesn’t pause men’s basketball when it’s on television.
Tumblr media
Nevertheless Jim was a huge help in finding cedar, that would light quick, and burn hot for us while we setup the truck. Maia was set on bringing a thousand blankets and sleeping bags. I argued before we left, it would be a waste of space to carry that much, and the camp-detector-test determined, I was wrong.
When you winter camp, everything you attempt takes a few extra steps. Unlike previous camps, we couldn’t just throw things on top of the truck overnight, or else they would freeze or blow away. Running around barefoot, was also an obvious, but big, no-no. Peeing; the second night I had to pee so bad, but the temperatures were so cold, I just said fuck this I can wait. I later regretted waiting when I had to bend my body to put pants and shoes on, with a painfully-full bladder.
As Maia built the fire with wood potentially sponsored by the WNBA, I began building the bed. We would end up sleeping in the truck for two nights this weekend, experimenting with bed setups both times. This night though, we had our usually foam padding across the platform, a comforter above those, each of us sleeping in one sleeping-bag inside another sleeping bag, with a comforter on top of that. The rear passenger windows, would have a blanket hanging against them on each side to help knock some of the cool air down. The seats up front, a thick comforter laying across it hung from the ceiling to create a small fort/room in the back to keep us warmer.
Tumblr media
It would drop to 10 degrees with the windchill where we were parked, and although all the blankets and bags keep body warms, if you don’t fall asleep before the temp in the truck drops, the cold air creeps into the cabin in a suspicious way, like a warm fart works its way around a dining room table when the in-laws are over. It takes its time, its in no rush to escape. Everything exposed, your face, your hands, and each breath of cold air you take burns your lungs a little. It’s pretty awesome. I don’t know how people do this in tents (no I’m not going to use a pun here, but I’m aware I could).
Having a fire while you setup is an amazing mood-booster, even if it’s too cold to enjoy like you normally would in the summer. The heat coming from that flame, is so important, and you’re using it for more than just entertainment or a place to melt marshmallows. We had enough wood to burn a fire before bed, and again in the morning as we got ready to head out. For breakfast, we had a dehydrated bag of Biscuits and Gravy with a hot chocolate. With 2,000mg of sodium, it would leave us thirsty for the rest of the day. But it was delicious!
Tumblr media
On our way out, as soon as we started to head west of St. Ignace, the snow flurries began. The lower parts of the UP didn’t have too much snow on the ground, but as we navigated further north on country roads, the the snow on started to pile up!
Many of the country roads up there, like many of the ORV routes, become snowmobile only. Not because of laws, but because of conditions. Narrow unplowed roads that still curve and dash between tall pines and cedars can become pretty tough to navigate through without getting stuck. And some of the trails, we learned, would become too narrow to even turn around in once you do go too far down the unbeaten path. But how will you ever really know how far your rig can make it if you don’t try it? Try it!
Tumblr media
We attempted to reach the coast of Lake Superior, at the mouth of the Two Hearted River where we planned to crack open a few ice-cold Bell’s Two-Hearted Ales, and call it a night. The further north we went, the worse it became. In fact the only other traffic we ran into were folks on snowmobiles. Without even a lifed Jeep in sight, we kept going, but only made it a few hundred feet passed an enormous sign that read END OF PLOWED ROAD. They weren’t kidding. With the last little bit of light left in the day hitting the snow in a way that made it seem as though you were driving through a friendly cloud, when the trail went from road, to all snowmobile trail, I could feel the traction from the gas pedal lose grip on the land below, as we the Xterra began to dig its own grave.
youtube
Once we became slightly stuck, I took upon myself to set the truck into 4LO, and dig us even further down, in a sort of fighting fire with fire sort of way. The snow had gone above the lower control arms, and at that point there’s not much you can do but dig yourself out. We did, thanks to our handy full-size shovel, it wasn’t too much work, but once freed from that tragedy, I somehow managed to back us further off the trail, and down into the ditch, where the truck would sit for roughly an hour, with all four wheels spinning.
Luckily for us, some snowmobilers we had passed earlier returned to help push us out of the ditch! We turned around, and went back to the Lower Tahquamenon Falls for the night! This is a campground that’s open all-year round, and even has electricity hookups. We were one of three people staying there for the night, and the only ones without an RV or snowmobile. For food, we just heated canned soup. It’s easy to pack, cheap, and doesn’t require much clean up. For drinks, the Two-hearted Ale we wanted to enjoy at the Two-hearted River went quick.
Tumblr media
Sleeping in the truck that net wasn’t as cold as the previous night. For this sleep, we unzipped both sleeping bags, and spread them flat across both our bodies. With this technique, we’d have shared body heat, and even if the tips of the blanket did become cold, the extra pair of legs was helpful in keeping those spots far and few between.
Tumblr media
In the morning the truck was covered in a thick blanket of snow, and we used our last few logs of firewood for breakfast, and heat, while we packed the truck. Soon we’d be ready to backtrack a few miles to the Lower Tahquamenon Falls, that still had a surprising number of people visiting it, especially since most weren’t traveling via snowmobile.
Tumblr media
Once in Marquette we checked into a hotel because we needed a shower big-time. Can you smell that smell? It was us. You know you’ve gone far too long without touching the ivory cellphone when you can smell your armpits without lifting your arms, and they smell a lot like wet feet. More beer was also inorder.
Tumblr media
It’s here we would celebrate the new year! Marquette, MI has a cute ball-drop downtown, where they play music from what I assume is a Now Thats What I Call Music 13 compact disc. It’s all in fun, especially when you’ve been drinking.
