I Hear the Sunspot Wasted Taichi As a Character

I went off a bit in the tags of @lurkingshan's Japanese QL Corner earlier, but I’m still annoyed enough about this to make a proper post. I wanted to leave this show alone because I liked Kohei and Taichi in the early episodes enough, but this show wasted our time for 6-8 weeks in a way that I find unforgivable. They took a loudmouthed, forthright, and well-intentioned character and made him stare blandly for almost two months while actively avoiding his and Taichi’s feelings. I’m so disappointed.

I’m glad @twig-tea has been covering some of what she remembers from the source material, because her added context has kept me from feeling so confused about this show. It feels rather insidious that this show would cut out any of Taichi’s struggles with Kohei’s queerness, and what reciprocity within himself means in favor of Taichi just looking confused at the camera for two months. It feels like a cowardly choice, because they didn’t want their main character to be unlikeable. It’s like they knew, like many J-BL recently, that they would not spend time in what becoming a couple for these two friends would mean. They also got so precious about the physical intimacy at the end in a way that just doesn’t work for me. Substituting food for intimacy doesn’t always work. I don’t even think ending on a kiss fixes this, because no amount of soft intimacy fixes the years of avoidance Taichi subjected Kohei to. 

It really bothers me how this show was so much longer than the film adaptation we got years ago only to be fundamentally worse because it refused to complete the full arc of their story. With the entire story available, why focus only on this initial getting together portion, strip out characterization, and also merge two female characters to create a worse one as a result? This ended up making both Taichi and Maya so unlikeable. Taichi went from demanding that Kohei speak up for himself and make sure people hear him, to someone who actively avoided Kohei’s clear confessions multiple times for two years! This is terrible!

Maya was such a frustrating character, especially because I’d spent time with Nana in Silent (2022). Nana presented a far more nuanced set of grief about hearing people engaging in hard of hearing and deaf people that Maya sorely lacked. Beyond that, her personality shifted with each episode to suit whatever needs the narrative suddenly asked of her. It was not fair to her actress, who never feels like she’s dialed in properly, and it’s unfair to both characters she’s asked to cover. Moreover, it’s unfair to the Taichi character, because so much of his stilted characterization ends up blamed on her entry into the story when it’s not her fault. It’s the writers’ fault for abandoning anything resembling an arc for Taichi.

This really was just such a waste. I really liked the building relationship between our leads in the early episodes, and I thought the actors had good working chemistry. I did not enjoy the entire back half of this show, and it was so annoying to see this show spin its wheels until the very last minute, before changing a key reunion scene for a half-hearted hug to conclude this wobbly narrative. These characters deserved a better adaptation than this, and it’s yet another strange adaptation this year afraid of the story they’re telling. I’m over it.

The morning, Enver is lucky enough to have pants on. The Slayer snaps his chains as it comes screaming into the daylight, barrelling out of the bed. The force of Infamy’s awakening sends Enver rolling onto the floor, narrowly missing being crushed by the bedframe. He’s tangled in their sheets, and already lamenting that they’ll need to be replaced. This silk had come all the way from Waterdeep. That’s his first thought, even with his heart pounding in his ears. He struggles to free himself, but the Slayer isn’t coming for him. There’s the acrid smell of half-cast sorcery, and then the screaming starts. When something warm and wet splashes onto him, soaking through the sheets, Enver hopes it’s blood. The crunching of bones and the smell of bright copper gives him a little hope that it’s not something worse. It wouldn’t be the first time a would be assassin emptied their stomach or their bowels in terror before the Slayer. Enver unrolls himself at last, leaning back on his elbows to enjoy the show, even as the blood—and thank goodness it is blood—soaks through his nice sheets. The mess quite nearly defies description.

It had been bad enough to bury his mother, and as much as he wants to hate his father for abandoning them, he hates the thought of being orphaned even more. And now he knows he has a sister, and he couldn’t put her through that. “That’s beside the point,” Astarion says. “I’m asking if a little spot of patricide might cheer you up.” Lukan shakes his head. “It’s not like that,” he says. He wants to try to make light, to play along with Astarion’s flippant turn of phrase, but it’s just too heavy. It doesn’t go unnoticed. “I might have another idea, in that case,” Astarion tells him. “Why don’t you have a sit on the bed, get those boots off, and I’ll be back, having done precisely no murders, I promise.”

In the Spider’s Parlor (3.5k Tav/Kar'niss)

She peers over her shoulder at him and then rolls her head, exposing more of her neck. Suddenly his need, that wretched appetite, is not as hideous as it has been, he feels no disgust for what he wants, for the curse that makes him want it. There’s only this moment. He nips lightly, slipping his arms around her, embracing the warmth. He reaches out with his forelegs, feeling her, holding her securely as he had done that first time. The walls were closing in on her, that’s what it felt like.

But Asa was still shaken after the whole ordeal, after what Yoru did. 

You didn’t expect to find Asa at your door during the wee hours of the morning, but when she showed up with tear stains on her cheeks and wore a terrified expression, you couldn’t just look away from it and turn your back on her. She was someone you were close with and if she needed you, you’d be there for her. You’d told her so after 3 years of the friendship. Asa awakened a passion in you that wasn’t inherently romantic, but it wasn’t strictly platonic either. Asa however, did not mind the emotional intimacy. She quite liked having someone to talk to, someone that made her feel seen. 

For her, you were that ‘someone’. 

Asa wouldn’t tell you what happened to her that would put her in such a panicked state, but that was fine with you. She would tell you on her own time, you were only glad that she came to you when she needed help. “I’m probably bothering you..” Asa spoke, her voice was drastically different from how it usually was. Her voice sounded worn and was awfully quiet — a stark difference to the calm tone you were used to. 

“No, Asa,” You ran your fingers through her long black hair, lightly scratching her scalp in an attempt to comfort her, “I promise you’re not. I told you to come to me if you ever needed me, remember?” Asa only closed her eyes in response, sighing and nuzzling further into your shirt. You smiled warmly, content that she was feeling at least a little better from before. Asa didn’t say anything in response, but she didn’t need to. Her actions almost always spoke for her. 

“.. I feel hurt because of..” Asa trailed off, not feeling quite ready to tell you what had happened between her and Denji. “-But I also feel.. Guilty for it..? Am I to blame..?” She seemed to be asking these questions to herself, but you couldn’t help your urge to chime in and tell her that whatever it was, she definitely hadn’t been the cause of it. 

“You’re valid in feeling hurt.” Your words were soft. Asa only looked down at her lap. “Asa, I’ve known you since freshman year — you’re not the type of person to do things without reason. Whatever it was that you did, just know that I'd still support you no matter what.” Your words calmed Asa’s fears down. She was afraid of what Denji thought about her, now that Yoru had done what she did. She quite liked having Denji around her and after this, she wondered.. Would they ever be able to go back to how things once were? Surely not.. 

“I think I messed things up with him..” Asa muttered.

“The annoying blonde kid?” You looked down at her with a half smile. 

“Denji.” 

“Right, Denji..” You chuckled, “Look, Asa. I may not be a dating expert or whatever — But whatever happened between you two, I believe that you two should talk about it and try to understand one another.” You kept petting her hair, the black strands feeling soft and smooth in between your fingers. “Denji, from what you’ve told me, doesn’t seem like the type of guy to leave you just because you mess up once.” 

“If you knew what I did, you wouldn’t be saying that..” 

“Even if I did, people have the capacity to grow and learn from their mistakes. If you feel guilty then you probably didn’t mean to do what you did.” you reasoned. 

“I really didn’t..” Asa’s eyes began to water up, flashbacks of the incident popping back up in her mind like film strips of an old movie. 

“See?” You wiped the tears from her eyes. “You’re not a bad person, Asa.” 

She only cried more once you said this, but you didn’t falter. You held her in your arms as if wishing to protect her from anything that could hurt her. 

“You’ll be alright, Asa. Maybe not right now.. Maybe not tomorrow, But you’ll be alright. I’m with you, okay?” She looked up at you, tears staining her cheeks again for the nth time tonight. Her eyes seemed hopeless and distressed when she first came to you. But now.. Her eyes had a sliver of hope in them. 

“..Okay.”

Just finished reading Summer Sons by Lee Mandelo and I loved it. Maybe it’s not for everyone but the slow burn of it all, the yearning, the grief, the Appalachian folklore, the mystery, the summer backdrop… it was all perfect. It scratched a persistent itch for me where I want to bridge the gap between old school spooky queer horror that I love and the best fanfiction I’ve ever read (because I read the best fanfiction I’ve ever read on the daily, I love you beautiful people). One of my favorite tropes or plot points or whatever you want to call it is when characters are so deeply soul connected and in love that they have never realized it (ala Scully and Mulder or Will and Hannibal or or or) and this did that at such an expert level.

I also really meshed the way Lee Mandelo writes. The pining is palpable and heartrending and confusing and I feel a kinship with this writing style. Some parts are slow, but that’s the good part. A character puts “the first MCR album” on at one point and then another character directly references Supernatural so I’m like… wow…. One of Us??? If this author has written fanfic, it is top shelf for sure and I mean that as the highest of compliments. The small bit of intimacy was also written so wonderfully.

This book is one of those things that just give me a lump in my throat and make my brain want to escape from my head and climb up the walls and I want to tell everyone about it but I’m afraid that anyone I rec it to will just be like “yeah it’s okay” and then my heart will break.

But if you want a book that is a wrenching story of end-of-summer rural Southern Gothic academia, rife with grief-driven unconfirmed feelings, queer horror where the horror is more grief than other things, self-realization and curse-breaking then come join the club.

I think Bucky would get nervous about outright confessing his feelings and not just showing them in various overt ways. Gale would probably get nervous about initiating physical intimacy, at least in the beginning. He'd also be nervous about inviting people to events that are important to him because he couldn't really count on anyone being there for him for support in the past.

It’s clear from the show that Bucky struggles to not only express emotions but allow himself to feel them as well. I’m going to do a post sometime about that specific expression he makes when he’s trying to block out big emotions, (It’s heartbreaking) but yeah, learning to actually allow himself to feel them properly instead of forcing it straight into anger/numbness would be a nerve-wracking journey. And then EXPRESSING those emotions on top of that? He’s a squadron commander and fighter that got through a whole war but this terrifies him to the point of shaking. It’s probably also some simple nervousness at showing vulnerability which we all feel, especially if he’s had bad experiences with that in the past.

For Gale I also think you’re right about his nervousness centering around people, what they think of him, would they want to spend time with him or come to whatever he wants to invite them to. He wants to touch people but it’s like there’s a mental block there, probably related to trust, as a result of his childhood like you mentioned. I feel his nervousness would come from him being afraid of how people would react to something, so he has a hard time taking the initiative in touch or invitations or anything until the person has somehow expressed they want that.

We could go so deep and detailed with this, a lot of possibilities and feels 😭

Drawing things out is more so what Ray likes to do. He likes to really bring in that foreplay, get people right to the edge and then pushing the limits as much as he can. But if he can get a quickie in with someone potentially between his cases or at work, he’ll do it.

one thing that came up for me recently (in talking to an old childhood friend, and then continuing that line of thought talking to my mother) was the extent and pervasiveness of the casual sexual harassment i experienced growing up, especially being the one “girl” always in a group of boys. i repressed a lot of the memories around this because. well. its unpleasant. i still don’t remember everything—what surfaced all of this in general was my friend apologizing for an incident in middle school i don’t even remember, where he asked me to masturbate in front of him as the condition to losing some stupid bet. we talked about it at length when he apologized and i’m glad it’s not something he beats himself up over anymore, especially given i still don’t remember it happening, but. definitely part of a pattern that i do remember in general and continues to affect me now
