why is masterpiece (first zexal op) the best out of all zexal openings? — asked, probably, no one ever, but it’s a very fine time to start brainrotting over it again.

but seriously, the lyrics are so good and i’m so mad i can’t understand the original, but the translations are also so good. i love how it’s generally focused on yuma and astral’s relationship, all these “to be honest, i was lonely before i met you” and “you were the only one to understand me”. obviously, it’s from yuma’s perspective and the whole opening, music and such, really fits his chaotic-good vibe. astral is described through “the kindness you gave me was strict, when we clashed i learned irritation”, which is honestly the best one-line summary of their relation i’ve seen so far. the fact that they’re so different, in almost every possible aspect, is underlined multiple times, as the main message is how these differences allow them to form something truly meaningful together (literally, “no one is exactly the same, because that's the reason for living” or “it can't be seen unless they're different, the landscape and the scenario”).

overall, the progress of their cooperation and mutual understanding is portrayed so prettily here: “it starts with recognizing our differences and dancing freely, the creation of heaven and earth”, is, well, just what the entire first arc is about. an alternate translation goes “we’re different, yet this is the wonder heavens have created” — i like to stick to something in between, i.e. yuma and astral’s union is what heaven and earth create; logically, astral stands for heaven because he’s from the astral world and yuma for earth. the thing created may either be zexal (as in zexal morph, you know the thing), or utopia, which is an even prettier metaphor. on the first duel they play together, utopia just sort of appears in yuma’s extra deck and while they create cards on the go multiple times afterwards, this is the first, original one that becomes the basis for everything else (besides: utopia is a philosophical concept of a perfect place where everyone can live happily without any disturbances and while the idea is realistically unattainable, it seems fitting for it to be “the creation of heaven and earth”. utopia itself (the monster) — aspiring emperor, hope — has some very-in-line connotations, if you ask me). either way, the title plainly suggests that whatever it is that they make together, it’s certainly a masterpiece (the lyrics back it up even more straightforwardly: “let's join together, piece by piece, it shines into a masterpiece”). i don’t think it needs much explaining, but a masterpiece is a) a work of outstanding skill (thanks, google) b) “a piece of work by a craftsman accepted as qualification for membership of a guild as an acknowledged master”. the latter is quite interesting in the utopia (monster) context, as it implies that the masterpiece they created marks the point of them switching to some advanced mode of work (more advanced dueling, for both of them) and gradually becoming more acknowledged in a way they can’t have achieved separately.

also the closing lines (when we disregard the chorus) — “when we reach the edge of the world, the view we see will be the truth”. once again, this imagery is just so damn pretty. i don’t know how much of it is made up in translation, but the first conditional/present tense contrast here looks so meaningful — they’re certain they will see a view at the edge of the world (whatever that one might symbolize, i’m not certain), but the view will be the truth (not e.g. the view we see is the truth, or the view we will see is the truth), like the truth part was a prediction — or it would be there only once they finished their journey and now they can only speculate (i’m digressing so much i hope it’s still understandable). the alternate translation here i really dislike (“towards the truth in the blue sky we glide, at this final moment we'll be right at each other's side”), as it loses all of what i’ve just mentioned. the second part is nice (i saw a “we’ll be together forever” version somewhere?), but now that i’ve finished the whole anime it just makes me angry because it turns out to be very much not true.

How I feel about this character

I think anyone who's ever seen my blog knows exactly how I feel about the blue boi! BEST ZEXAL CHARACTER FULL STOP. BEST YUGIOH CHARACTER. He is just my absolute favourite character and I wanna hug him SO DAMN BAD (and do not even get me started on how much my heart dies whenever I play Cross Duel he is such an impossible sweetheart)

Myself No one. I see him as aroace anyway, and I just can't romantically ship him with anyone, though if I had to... maybe Sparrow XD (even then not very romantically)

My non-romantic OTP for this character

I LIVE for non-romantic/brotherly Keyshipping. I mean, yes he and Yuma will have deep moments but then they throw shade in a way that just convinces me that they're brothers. Also this might be just the dub, but I also really enjoy the idea that Astral also acts a bit like a parent to Yuma and basically adopted him (i mean sometimes in the dub he sounds exactly like a tired parent XD)

I don't see Astral as they/them or nb. I can totally get why some people headcanon that, but I just... can't do it. In fact I actually headcanon that Astral gets super offended when called anything other than a boy, simply because he's sick of people confusing him for a girl due to his feminine appearance and more feminine dress style on Earth (not dresses but still feminine) and he doesn't like how everything is gendered and how your biology dictates what you're supposed to like or how you're meant to look. So yeah, that's my unpopular opinion (though I fully understand anyone who follows the nb!Astral headcanon because it does make sense)

One thing I wish had happened to this character in canon

There are WAY TOO MANY things I wish had happened to him! Main one is that I wished he also became a human and stayed on Earth, but I also wish he'd been given a proper canon family or even friends so that him going back to Astral World made sense. Oh, and that he actually had a proper name because I swear his name is like the writers just put in a placeholder name for the Astral Being and it stuck.

Why I like them/why I don’t

Aki- best girl. i think her story, what we got of it, was incredibly interesting. i loved her dynamics with the rest of the signers, especially yusei but thats just me being a faithshipper so. :/

Kalin- I am neutral on him. However i am still watching 5ds when i get to the crashtown arc that might change but like. hes the guy i love to hate since ive just seen him as a dark signer

Astral- okay so. i use they/them pronouns for astral because theyre an alien they should not have a human concept of gender. Anyways, i loved kinda their development over zexal! they and yuma just sorta blended together. also that voice... very nice. i want that voice.

What I like about their appearance

Aki- everything. I love her aesthetic, i love the silhouette, the color pallet... before i realized how hot it would be my renfair outfit was inspired by her which is a big compliment.

Kalin- Okay so this one user who i dont remember the name of said that the clothing of Sattelite was very punk/biker and other than maybe crow. i think kalin shows it off the best. And I Fucking Love Him For That. also i want his gender.

Astral- I think the body markings to me. There's not much to Astral's design that i want to pull out because its all so elegant and gets across who they are very well.

Emotional / Hilarious Moment: Actually? The most emotional moment, most emotional EPISODE for me, is the finale.

  To this day, I have to be in a rEALLy good mood to be able to sit down and watch “Forever ZEXAL”. Otherwise it might put my mood into a spiral of sad adfsgdhj xD

  It’s not at all that I don’t like the last episode!! The opposite, even. I do like it, but I hate endings. This series meant a lot to me, from middle school into teens, in more ways than I’ll likely ever admit online. It saved me, tbh.

  So ye AFSGHDJK last episode, rarely can I do it.

  Part I laughed hardest at? Pick literally ANY of Astral’s dub one-liners. Especially shade towards Yuma. I can still be coaxed into ugly-laughing at those !

  Yes I know all about the “aishiteru” thing, but after doing some research myself, I found this little passage -

“The literal translation of “Aishiteru” (愛してる) is “I love you” or “I’m in love with you”. But it expresses such a sincere and deep love that Japanese only use it in long-term relationships and very emotional situations. Such as getting married or when someone is on their death bed.

When you are parting ways with a dear friend or when a beloved one is on their death bed you can say or might hear the phrase 愛してる (aishiteru), too. In this situation, the phrase becomes an affectionate final goodbye that expresses one’s deep love and respect for that very person." - ( link to article )

  Realistically, knowing Konami, I am pretty certain this how it was meant to be perceived canonically. Not a romantic thing - but a very tender, sincere final goodbye of two dear friends. And that is how I have always viewed it as well.

How I feel about this character

I truly appreciate Astral. He’s so pretty, and I’m so jealous of his earrings. (I want a pair, I want them to float too!) I think he’s a great character foil to Yūma because even they are very different, the thing that matters is that they were able to learn from each other and grow because of each other. Being an alien and having a rather dry tone, it’s kind of easy to miss that Astral is probably just a kid too, so seeing him be a kid and kid-like makes my heart burst; that’s part of the reason why his development is so interesting. (I just love kids being kids too? Like I want twenty more episodes of silly fillers please; their joy is my joy.)

I can’t infer much about how Astral was originally–before losing his memories–but I know that his time with Yuma (and co.) changed him significantly. That change is the drive of his inner conflict as he regains his memories. He is stuck choosing between his duty to his people and his sympathy of his so-called friends because they’re Yūma’s friends, because they’re his friends too. He genuinely cares about those around him, so having to pick a side is difficult to say the least. That is honestly a great story line, especially since losing his memories means that he is not completely bound to duty and thus he is also burdened by the weight of choice.  

Overall, Astral is a great character from design (except the light censorship in the dub, wtf) to story development, and I hope people know that Zexal has two protagonists. My favorite thing about Astral, if I have to boil it down, is when he smiles, no matter how small. It’s just genuine happiness, and it makes me remember that one thing to take away from Zexal is that everyone has the capability to love, even an alien without any memories. ( ´ ▽ ` )

All the people I ship romantically with this character

When it comes to Astral, it’s Keyshipping for me. I truly loves Yūma and Astral together because as I said before, they learn from each other and grow because of each others. Also, I’m sure the writers knew what they were doing by paralleling their relationship to Yami and Yūgi in the sense that they are separate people but are one, two pieces of a puzzle that are made for each other (both literally and figuratively). Astral and Yūma love each other very much, and that is a fact! 

The moment Astral starts falling in love with Yuma is when he makes Observation #13 [As long as you have friends, you have hope. Sub observation 13. Yuma is my friend.] Observation #14 [”The people who know Yuma love Yuma.] is when he realizes that fact. 

My non-romantic OTP for this character

Literally anyone, but the one who comes to mind right now is Tori because they bond over worry about Yūma. They love him, so if he has to go and do something, they’re right behind him because if he’s going to die, he isn’t going to die alone. (I’m sorry if I talk about Yūma too much on a post about Astral; he’s just really important when Astral is involved and vice versa.)

Uhm, I wish he stayed, I guess. I don’t feel like Astral had to go back to Astral World because his mission is over, but the question would be where would he go from there had he stayed? I’m drawing up a blank myself, but I guess that’s the point. YGO, if you think about it, has a very strong coming-of-age theme, and sometimes, separation is good for growth. I just want them to be best friends forever.

Yes, homie! What I love about them: At first Astral was just a nice eye-candy for me. I love his eyes the most (I think animators did too). He expressed so much by just staring. I was at one point fascinated by Astral being so different even compared to other people in Astral world. I do dig the fact, that even though you spent a lot of time with him in a show, but he's still left mysterious. Like, he's an embasador, but his powers are quite something else. He's cold and calculative and very smrt. I do like smart people, they fascinate me with big smart words, I guess. His character growth is pretty nice and I do like that he knows how to pull certain strings. Be that in the begginig with opposite game or at the end. A big brain move, in my opinion, knowing that Yuma seemed tired of dueling and in no way would agreed to another one. So yeah, I WILL ERASE BARIAN WORLD, so lets duel. He left him with no room for a "no". Is it mean? Hell yeah. But that's a part of him being a calculative smart ass. What I hate about them: Honestly, the inconsistency of "the number bestowed a knowledge to him about human world" stuff. It felt a bit random. I know its canonical, but it's just personal pet-peeve Favorite Moment/Quote: *Slaps entire Zexal anime* From the sub: -What does Astral says about it? -I think Yuma is an idiot What I would like to see more focus on: On Astral's past, honestly. They spoken ONCE. Favorite headcanon: Astral is a ethereal robot\weapon. Obviously he's not a human and he's not of a human's soul origin. He was made for a specific thing. So he's learning AI kinda deal, only in a form of a higher state of... soul thing. That's probably why chaos is deadly to him - because he never was a human to house one.

First ship ever: omg I don't know actually...ones I looked at when I was like 10-11, babies first fandoms were ygo and tmm, so possibly mint/zakuro from tmm or possibly even. kishigo which is not the case now LMAO. if it was ygo it was 100% an oc/canon chara ship which is. well. a little funny looking back

I was tagged by @casassin​ to show my 10 OTPs (? xD) Like, this is going to be Hard because I have like 100000000000. So yeah xD I make a random order because choosing which one will already be too hard xD

1. UsUk (America x United Kingdom) - Hetalia

It began with those two Dorks. They were my first OTP knowing for myself that it’s an OTP :D  Even thou I dinstanced myself from Hetalia a bit I still enjoy to look at Fanarts and read doujinshis of them <3 I just love them :3

2. Spideypool (Spiderman x Deadpool) - Marvel

I love them and They are so cuuuuute :3  And to be clear: I’m not talking about the Spiderman of homecoming since he’s too young and Deadpool would never try it out with an underaged! 

3. Klace (Keith x Lance) - Voltron Legendary Defender

Yeah. i LOVE those two! They made such great Progress during the show and their Relationship is just so warm and lovely. This is how two rivals turn into friends and into lovers. Even thou they’re not Canon they always give the vibes that it possibily happen and that both have a thing for each other. Welp, at least before Season 7 happened an the writers ruined everything :D But they will still be my lovely dorks and always be one of my OTPs :3

4. Altair x Malik

I can’t say much to them except that I love all the fanart and the characters. I love that ‘love-hate-relationship’ they have and the way their relationship evolved in the game. And I will always love the thought of Altair being a dork and Malik being so done with his boyfriends shit xD

5. Ezio x Leonardo DaVinci

I know that Leonardo is Canon with Salai, but I still ship those two hard! They are so sweet and Leonardo is just so cuuute xD

6. Qiu Tong x Sun Jing - Tamen De Gushi

I still can’t beliebe that those two are finally Canon. We waited so long for this and then it finally happened and dear god those two are the cutest shit I have EVER seen in my Life. Their relationship is so cute and they are sooooo good for eachother <3 They really are the perfect Yuri OTP :3

7. Mika x Yuu - Owari no Seraph 

I still can’t believe that those two AREN’t Canon! Like, I’m sorry but they’re acting like Lovers and not Like Brothers! (and no, They are not brothers by blood. They say that they are family because they lived at the tame orphanage!) I’m waiting for the day that those two realise that they feel more than just family-like friendship for each other. 

8. Akira x Ryo - Devilman Crybaby

I love the show and I love those dorks. It’s kinda canon that Ryo has feeling for Akira and I screamed a lot when I watched the show. Those two somehow are really special and Yeah. Love them :3 I know that Akira has romantic Feelings for Miki, but I think that he also feels something for Ryo and that he is, just like I think Miki is, Poly. 

9. Miki x Miko - Devilman Crybaby

I know that there is a lot discussion because of them because in some languages Miko and Miko said ‘I love you’ to each other and in others they said ‘I like you’ to each other. In german they said ‘I love you’ so for me it’s canon that they had romantic feelings for each other. I know that it’s clear that Miki also had those feelings for Akira so my theory is that she’s poly and able to love Akira AND Miko in the same way. But I personally only Ship her with Miko.
