A/N: This is for @bucky-smiles 2K Bollywood Writing Challenge! My prompt was Jab Tak Hai Jaan. The thing that stood out most to me was both of the protagonists’ struggles and/or commitments to faith, so that’s what I drew on for this fic. Although I know that Sam is an orphan in the comics, having lost both his parents to violence, I had him be raised by his mother, so she’s still alive here.

Harsh light pierced the nothingness behind closed eyes. You heard steady beeping and a few far-off voices. Painfully, you opened your eyes and saw Sam grasping your hand. He’d fallen asleep. A smile spread across your face as you spoke. “Hey, you.”

Stirring, Sam woke and stared at you in awe. “Oh thank God.”

“God?”

“Don’t question it right now.”

Without another word, he stood up and kissed you, first on the lips and then on the nose and forehead. “I thought I lost you.”

“Can’t get rid of me that easily,” you replied, wincing as you tried to maneuver in the uncomfortable hospital bed. You knew you’d heal faster than the average person, but what you could only assume to be numerous broken bones, was not a walk in the park to say the least. “What happened? I know one of the guys cut my chute. I remember feeling you grasp onto me but then the cords wrapped around your hand, and then nothing.”

Apparently, after Sam lost his grasp, you fell into a patch of trees. Numerous branches had broken your fall, but also two bones in your non-dominant arm, your left tibia and numerous toes. Between that and a concussion, it wasn’t a surprise why you felt like you’d been hit by an 18-wheeler and then backed over again. As you’d guessed earlier, Nat had an escape plan underground, where Fury had people waiting to pick you up. “Sidorov?”

“Fucker’s with Fury now.”

“Unlucky for him.” Sam clasped your hand in his. He was relieved but there was still something eating at him. “Sam, look at me. This is not your fault. I’m going to be okay.”

“I know,” he said, continuing with a gruff laugh. “I prayed to God. I asked him not to do this to me again. Not after Riley.”

“So, do you feel like he answered your prayers?”

Sam pondered your question for a moment. “I don’t know, honestly. I want to, but if I do it makes me wonder why he was listening now and not with Riley.”

“Believe in what makes you feel free, Sam. What brings you peace.”

“Is it too cheesy if I say you?” He asked, giving you a megawatt, cheesy smile. You nodded. “Okay, how about people? Without Stark’s upgrades to my suit, I might not have gotten to you at all.”

“People it is.”

After talking to the doctors, who determined you’d probably be good to go within the week, you felt the jet touch down. You hadn’t even realized you were on the jet. Frankly, you hadn’t questioned it. “We’re home?”

“Yea,” he said. “We’re home. But you are going straight from this hospital room to one on the ground.”

As you were wheeled off, you caught sight of Fury. “How is there a hospital on this jet?”

More than anything, you wanted to go back to Stark Tower. That was home now. But Banner’s not-so-professional second opinion was that you should stay in the hospital until you were well again. You wanted to put up a fight, say that he didn’t have an MD, just a billion PhDs, but you were too worn out for more fighting. “Sam, would you mind grabbing some things from my room?”

Without a word or complaint, he kissed your forehead and left to grab a few changes of clothes, as well as your lamp and your murti. You were alive, again, despite the seemingly impossible circumstances.

When he returned, he placed the murti at the foot of your bed. “I picked a flower for you, but I don’t think you can use it for your prayers. If I remember right,” he said, putting the stem of the rose between his teeth.

“Why not? Where’d you get it from?”

“Stole it from a vase of flowers Tony was gonna give to Pepper. He’s down one flower.”

You snorted so hard you hurt yourself. “That’s my man. And you’re right, I can’t, but you can be all romantic and tuck it behind my ear.” With everything set for your evening prayers, you gave Sam a kiss and told him he could go and get some sleep.

“Oh, no way, jaanu,” he said softly. “I’m staying right here till you come home. Want me to pray with you?”

“Do you want to?”

“Yea, I do,” he said after a moment. “I don’t know what I believe. But you do. And that’s enough for me right now.”

Jaanu: A term of endearment that comes from Jaan (which translates to my life, essentially). I always considered jaanu a much more platonic way of saying jaan so whenever my friends call me jaanu i literally lose my shit because it makes me so soft

Khota/khoti: It’s an insult that translates to donkey but in my house it’s definitely a term of endearment LMAOOOO we all love each other in my house

Phitte mu: It’s basically a way of saying fuck and I say it all the time tbh.. it’s much more emotional than saying ‘fuck’ too haha

22. what makes you proud about your country? what makes you ashamed?

I’m proud of the culture that comes from India and the homeliness I feel whenever I participate in something related to it. I’m ashamed of how easily people give up their culture to be western and also I’m ashamed of the government.

26. does your nationality get portrayed in Hollywood/American media? what do you think about the portrayal?

Yes, Indian people do pop up.... When it’s tech support, a fob (fresh off the boat), comedic relief, or the unnecessarily smart person.. It kinda pisses me off that that’s what Indian people have been boiled down to.

GETTING CLOSER:

× what does your muse smell like? what perfume/cologne are they using? cool water by davidoff or bleu de chanel by chanel. � do they shower often? every day or just every couple of days? james has developed the habit to shower every day, in the mornings after getting up and at night just before going to bed. sometimes he feels the need to shower in the middle of the day after shoots too. it just tends to depend according to what the shoot requires him to do. ♻ how about brushing teeth? three times a day, or just in the morning?three times a day, definitely. in the morning after breakfast, after lunch and at night before bed. ⌘ do they rather shower or take a bath? it depends according to his mood really, he doesn’t have a particular preference. if he’s in a rush, he’ll just shower because it’s quicker. if he wants to relax after a long day though, he’ll take a bath. the majority of time, he sticks to showers. ♀ how long does your muse usually need for a shower/bath? showers are usually quick, they range from ten to fifteen minutes tops. when it comes to taking a bath it generally depends. considering whenever he does it, it’s with the intent of relaxing, he’s not really in a rush and they can take a little longer. ⚣ how long does your muse need to shave? not too long even if he takes his time with it. it never takes longer than five minutes though and for the most part ( save if he has a shoot that demands him doing so ) he doesn’t bother shaving completely, there’s always stubble. ♂ does your muse put on make-up? how long do they need for it every day? much to his dismay, most of the shoots / runway shows /ads and yada yada he does require applying makeup. unless he’s working though, he won’t put on makeup. ⚢ what kind of make-up does your muse use? favourite colours? how much do they use? he doesn’t understand anything about makeup despite his job requiring it. usually he leaves that up to the makeup artist/team he’s working with and he gets rid of it as quickly as he can. some shoots / shows require heavy makeup however.

EXPLORING THEIR BODY:

♤ does your muse have any scars? where? what do they look like? how did they get them? james has a scar, that’s now starting to fade, on the right side of his neck which is the result of a biopsy he had to do when he was fifteen. aside from it, there are a few minor ones, nothing too evident, scattered throughout his body, result of him accidentally hurting himself while messing about on set. ♧ any freckles/moles/birth marks? where? he has very, very light freckles on the bridge of his nose but they’re not really visible unless someone’s incredibly close to him. there’s a tiny light colored and heart-shaped birth mark on the left side of his right knee and there’s another one directly above his hanger tattoo which is behind his left ear. as for moles, he doesn’t have any. ♡ are their fingernails dirty or clean? cut/long? he can’t stand dirty fingernails, it literally disgusts him! so he keeps his cut and clean. ♢ how much do they weigh? it tends to vary, usually ranging from 165lbs to 175lbs. as of now, he weighs 167lbs. ♠ any ‘weird’ characteristics on their body? one leg/arm longer than the other? no, not really. ♣ are their veins particularly visible when they’re angry/upset/sad? he has the tendency of clenching his fists whenever he’s angry/upset, making the veins within his arms and hands rather visible. when he’s completely out of himself / beyond angry or he’s shouting at someone, there are visible neck veins. ♥ do they have more muscles or more fat on their body? as a model and as someone who works out almost every day, james has a pretty athletic body meaning there’s more muscle than fat. ♦ any tattoos? where? what’s the story behind them? a few. he has a really, really small hanger tattooed behind his left ear which is meant to symbolize his love for fashion, there’s a 14th may tattooed in small, uppercase and bold letters inside his left wrist which is his cousin’s neelam birth date, a swallow on his left middle finger symbolizing his freedom, the quote love and show, hate and hide tattooed along his left hip which is more or less a reminder and the proverb nobody can destroy your dreams in arabic on his right collarbone, also as a reminder. aside from it, he has the canon mandala which to be fair, has more of a religious meaning to him than anything else. a few months back he got the word perspective tattooed on the inside of his arm / ref /, a circle on the right side of his left wrist and the quote only the good along the side of his right arm.

OPEN YOUR CLOSET:

⦂ what clothes do they sleep in? nine out of ten times in his underwear, the other times in sweatpants. ♚ do they have a favourite piece of clothing? he does have a few pieces. there’s a dkny raincoat that’s probably his ultimate favorite piece of clothing ( x ), there’s an alexander wang’s barcode hoodie ( x ) and an alexander mcqueen jumper ( x ) ❅ what do they usually wear when they’re not working? if he’s home, he sticks to sweats because he can’t be bothered. if he’s leaving home for a bit only or he’s having a lazy day, he’ll just shrug on the closest oversized hoodie and some random black jeans. otherwise his style tends to depend; it’s very much about black / dark jeans, plain leather jackets or imprinted ones, bomber jackets, plain white/grey/black shirts, alexander wang’s hoodies, alexander mcqueen’s shirts. it really goes according to his mood. there’s never much color within his wardrobe though.  ☏ what do they wear when they’re at work? whatever the job he’s doing at the moment requires him to wear, really. ₤ how many shoes do they have? what kind? over sixty/seventy pairs of shoes, hands down. he has a lot of nike shoes, in fact half of his shoes collection might as well be nike shoes… ⌚ how long do they need to decide what to wear in the morning? not too long at all, he tends to go for whatever he’s feeling at the moment. some of the outfits he wears are ‘pre-made’ by his stylist so it’s not much of a hassle to just go and pick one. ⌛ do they go shopping for clothes often? how long do they usually need? he doesn’t do it as often as people would think but it still happens a lot. if he’s with his stylist, it can take the whole day. if he’s with friends or even alone, it really depends, it could go from an hour to a whole morning or afternoon. it also depends on how much he’s planning to buy. $ how much money do they spend on clothes every month? a lot more than he should. considering most of his clothes are designer clothes it can easily go up to 500K per month. then again some months he doesn’t spend over 1K, it really ranges / changes as the months go by.

I miss you. I’ve been missing you a lot lately. I know you told me you wouldn’t be that responsive these few weeks bc you are on vacation with your friends. I love LOVE that you told me this and reassured me before you left for vacation. I really appreciated it.

Even though you told me all of this, I feel so sad sometimes. Not because I don’t think you care or love me BUT because I just fucking miss you. And it’s making me go crazy. I don’t want to bother you when your on vacation so I’m writing out my love and feelings here.

I miss you. Especially your voice. I miss it. I miss hearing you say my name. Talking to me.

I also LOWKEY feel sad because I know I won’t get to see you this summer. I know you say you want to come visit me BUT the truth is you’re still on vacation and I know you delayed your time to come home so when will you actually have time to come see me? And I don’t want you to come because you feel obligated either. The first and last time I saw you was 8 months ago. It’s been a while and I know we both want to see each other but when? Idk.

And I LOWKEY feel so scared to meet you again. Because that’s gonna be “judgement day” for lack of a better word. Seeing you physically again for the second time in my life and touching you, talking to you will determine our future– if we should date and etc. We both know this. Maybe we’re both scared we both won’t feel the same way we do when we actually meet or that when we kiss for the first time it won’t feel right and we will have to stop talking romantically. Who knows?

I believe I felt a spark when I saw you last year at that wedding. I felt it throughout my body the whole time I was in Texas. I know what we have is real. I just need to see you in person to show you. I miss you so much. And I’m awkward and weird and I don’t know how to express ALL of this to you on the phone. I wish you could come see me in person. If you don’t, I won’t be mad. I’ll be sad. Maybe I’ll come see you next year with my family. LOL

But I want more. And I know I wanted to take it slow with you BUT how slow can we be????? It’s time. And maybe you want to be stuck in lalaland (LOL) for a bit longer because you don’t want to face reality? The fact that Ophelia woke annie up in the middle of the night to do it, so that no one else would see her be “weak” is so fucking important to me
