BYLER FIC REC WEEK 2023

Calling all Bylers! There are so many talented and amazing creators in our community, and it’s time to show them some love! There are quite a few fics and authors that are very beloved by this fandom, and while they absolutely deserve all the hype they get, there are so many other amazing fics and authors out there waiting to be discovered! We want to help you shine the spotlight on your underrated faves and share the love.

How it works:

Byler Fic Rec Week will last from Friday, 3rd of March to Thursday, 9th of March. Each day will be themed around a different genre of Byler fanfic for you to rec your personal favourites of. Don’t be shy, share as many fics as you want that fit the day’s theme— the more the better! We’ll be reblogging all the recs that get shared to this account as an archive of hidden gems, and using the tag #BylerFicRecWeek2023. The specific genres for each day can be found here.

All you need to do to rec a fic is to share its title, the name of the author, and a link to it (You can embed hyperlinks to the fic and the author’s AO3 profile by highlighting the text, choosing the infinity symbol, and pasting in the URL). If you want to you can also add the AO3 summary, your own description, how it makes you feel, or anything about the fic that you think will make people interested in reading it. If the author has a Tumblr and you know the @ you can also tag them, so they know you like their fic enough to recommend!

Hey! I just want you to know that I really adore your art and Rina and your Hadina ship! I’ve seen how hard you’ve worked on her and how hard you’ve been working at improving your art! I remember the first time I saw your posts in the Hades tags and I was so happy to find another Hades self shipper that makes beautiful art!

Also, you’re totally not alone. I’ve DEFINITELY struggled with trying to make content for others to keep them entertained because I’m worried they’ll forget about me if I take too long to write or they’ll just stop interacting with me or something. Like, I get really caught up in that sometimes too, so I get it.

I can’t speak as an “artist” artist because I can’t draw for diddly squat (hence why I write so freaking much lol) but you’ve got talent girl! Seriously, I envy anyone who can draw! Like, that Hadina art and Persephades art you make? It’s SO GOOD! Like, I reblog all of them because they’re so cute and I’ve saved every single Persephone pic you’ve ever drawn because they make me so freaking happy! Like, I’m HONORED to my have stupid self ship OC be drawn by you!!! I’m not worthy lol!

My advice would be don’t sweat the “popularity” and “clout”. It’s move to see lots of people interact with your posts and stuff, but at the end of the day it’s about what makes you happy, not others! I totally get the hype, though. It feels good to see your posts get interactions and it sucks when you see others getting more interactions than you and you feel like you need to compare yourself. But you shouldn’t! You make content for YOU and share it because YOU want to! I feel like that’s what tumblr’s all about, y’know? Indulging in what you love and sharing it to inspire others to do the same.

So yeah, sorry I wrote so much, I have a bad habit of rambling 😂😅 but I hope this helped a little! Don’t lose your spark, hon! You’re talented and your ship’s adorable! MORNING REBLOG. Also, in the comments of the new chapter @thedawningofthehour had a bunch of questions so I thought I'd put my reply here!! Because maybe some of you other people will ALSO be interested- I DON'T KNOW!! Spoilers for the chapter but no spoilers for the fic itself going forward.

(Faikishi if you don't want me to post this I'll go ahead and take it down, but it was all such good questions I decided to put the comment on my fridge.)

I had ONE FEAR and it was Faikishi with their insanely good world building asking me questions LMAO I was like please no one look too close at my world building please please please- (I mean that in a good way I live for your comments lol)

EXCUSE THE LORE DUMP I don't think any of this is necessarily spoilery- it's just stuff I've tried to imply within the story, but left vague on purpose because- I don't know why honestly. I guess because the characters might not know everything or think of it?

>I am just curious, I know the reason you don't give the Hamato fam a lot of 'rich people stuff' is probably because it's just funnier the other way, (and because Lou doesn't want his kids to grow up spoiled rich kids) but I feel like he'd have a car and/or paid driver. I mean, it's a security concern too, he's Lou Jitsu. Crazy fans and whatnot, people kidnapping a rich guy for ransom. (which would be hilarious because not least of all he could kill a man with a single one of his gelled-up hairs, but if they called home to make their demands instead of directly to Sal-well, if the Jitsu didn't kill them, the Donnie would) I mean, they could just be trying to keep a low profile here. I feel like the cabbie couldn't have known this was Lou Jitsu he was threatening. They do use a private diver/car sometimes! I feel like Yoshi mainly uses the car and driver for work, but the family as a whole mainly uses the subway or taxis or bus because that's the 'New York' thing to do. (Also I've been visiting NYC a lot recently and the idea of driving there is unimaginable to me. I will never do it, and the subway is WAY faster and easier besides.) I'm basing Yoshi's income based off of Bruce Lee's income, which I figure would be a similar paygrade arc if we're taking the silly cartoon show seriously when it hypes up Lou Jitsu. so, man is a MULTI MILLIONAIRE before he disappeared, and he only made more while he was gone. (Because people love a mystery.) But (and here's where I may be drifting outside my lane) he is also a first generation Japanese immigrant who didn't have family support when he first got here so I imagine he was pretty broke, and his Grandpa always struck me as the type of strict guy who doesn't like waste. So while Yoshi is someone who will throw money at a problem to make it go away rather than deal with it, he also sometimes doesn't think to do it, and will yell about the AC and also not throw anything away until it's falling apart. IDK if that makes sense lol, Xander is super fucking cheap and Yoshi approves because Xander will just sit and clip coupons with the kids before going grocery shopping.

I have a weird idea of nobility and how it works in the Hidden City because like- BARON Draxum?? That kind of IMPLIES A LOT?? I MEAN you know you're writing fucking. DAWN OF THE HOUR. The implications. Baron Draxum is "at large" but the Council of Heads is not exactly working as hard as they could to get him, because the political mess it would cause is almost not worth the trouble. But an easy target is the human who doesn't have any political identity in the Hidden City besides "famous", and who has custody of the neat little science projects that you were going to be confiscating anyway. (Meme voice: It's free super weapons.) The Hidden City is 'aware' of mutants because they have agents and spies (I'm assuming Mayhem isn't the only one), but they're calling the turtles here yokai for two reasons. ONE it's easier to win a custody fight without all the legal tape if you just call them normal kids, and TWO they don't really want word of mutants getting out quite yet. Some crazy fucking guy in a castle on a hill is basically recreating the yokai CREATION event, they're trying to keep it quiet for now. Even Euryale isn't aware of all the nuances, she'd kind of working with a disadvantage here, but she's got enthusiasm because. Conflict of interest. The Hidden City is actually aware of the turtles in this universe, because how could they not be. There's still yokai above ground (I'm going to cover this later because I had to do a lot of research about CLEM the goat guy in a few of the episodes) so word would eventually spread even down there. And Yoshi has done PHOTOSHOOTS with the kids, their trip to the zoo was in the social column of the NYT.

>?? I feel like? Conflict of interest? Conflict of interest doesn't exist! The court process in the Hidden City is HORRIFYING but also INSANELY SILLY. (Just like ROTTMNT lol.) There's rules but also there's NO RULES. It's why Sal is going to have a heart attack, and why he has Mariko in the first place. She's actually studied human law so she knows what the differences are.

>To be fair, I can see Big Mama getting all the correct paperwork for this. I mean, why not? It would be trivial for her to accomplish. If she does have the correct paperwork she definitely did not present it for this trial because she lowkey is trying to make things harder for Yoshi, but. SLIGHT spoiler? Sal is not referring to "Law" as we know it, but different law which is part of his argument. I had to struggle SO HARD with this fic precisely BECAUSE I had to come up with both sides and I can only hope I did- well not even a good job, but a LEGIBLE job lmao.

It's called "Lou get me the fuck out of here Lou get me the fuck out of here Lou get me-" and Yoshi trying to kill everyone in the room lmaooo. Literally every time I try to figure out what Yoshi would think I remember him going to rescue the kids in the season 1 finale, and looking at April ( A SIXTEEN YEAR OLD GIRL) and saying, 'Alright, new plan. We each defeat 300 Foot ninja.' And then April NODDING AND AGREEING like mmm. Yes, of course. They are BOTH THE SAME KIND OF STUPID I love him so much. I think he's terrible at planning he just brute forces everything.

And like- he CAN brute force everything? He's in his sixties in the show and hasn't worked out for decades and still cracks concrete with Draxum's HEAD. He ripped a hydra apart barehanded in the Nexus flashback. He's a FREAK OF NATURE no wonder Draxum sucked his DNA for superweapons. I have this whole complicated headcanon lore reason why the Hamato are like this, but I don't know when and IF I'm going to be able to include it.

I'm super grateful for the comments honestly because I'm dying to talk about this shit.

Guys, I can't think you enough for what a great year this has been and I can't wait to start showing you guys what I've been working on in this upcoming new year. All the comments and community and fun crossovers with friends have really made my year, and I'm so happy I started writing a stupid little turtle fanfic that people actually enjoyed. I expected maybe 100 kudos if I was lucky, and a couple little comments;

My dude, its not that your content is boring, or you are a bad writer, or that people hate you. Quite the contrary, you are incredibly creative and passionate and that is always a delight to see. The thing is you are on a dying website on a fandom that tends to be the butt of jokes (so most people dont want to be associated with it) and you write about one of the last popular characters there. Its a niche community, thats why your posts dont reach a big audience. (1/2)

I can't help but feel that way lately ever since my instrusive thoughts came back bad the worst they've ever been and it feels like everyone is proving all the horrible things my mind is telling me about myself and my work to be true. It just seems like people don't really care about what I have to offer anymore, like I can't entertain anymore so now I'm worthless. The idea that my creations that make me happy makes others happy too is one of the only things that kept me going and motivated to share more but it feels like it's dwindling. I appreciate you and everyone else that has been supporting me and I'm glad you still enjoy my content. I don't want to seem ungrateful but my mind is being nasty to me and seeing how a lot of people seem to be losing interest across all three of my blogs more than ever is getting me down even more.

It's a shame that the site is dying when Twitter is garbage that kills the passion and creativity of many. Yeah that might be a part of it but I definitely have a more active follower base than it seems most of the time. I notice this when a bunch of people following me only like/rb/interact with stuff I reblog and clearly scroll past my self made posts in between. And yeah Eggman isn't that popular, especially not modern/game canon. But I'm even starting to feel like an outcast to the Eggman fandom space here (despite being here before most since 2015 when there were barely any Eggman posting blogs. I was the one accused of gatekeeping for not liking jimbotnik but I'm the one feeling pushed out and alienated now lol) because I don't like the movie and I'm not big on the popular romantic ships, headcanons, and fanon interpretations now. It just feels like everything I do is wrong and what I have to offer is never good enough, or the interest doesn't last because I don't do all the new things that are considered cool now.

Undoubtedly part of it is also that I write more. But fuck man, art is hard and even harder when you have to digitalize it on a phone. It's become more stressful than fun so I can't do it a lot. I just wish that fandoms didn't always make creators feel like writing doesn't matter and isn't as good as art. I've seen people entirely disregard writing and automatically assume it to be trash just because it isn't art. And a lot of people don't tend to support writing like they do with art, even if they do like it. But I wish people understood that creators need at least some support if they want them to keep creating, otherwise they won't think it's worth it or anyone cares. We're not mindless content machines to pump out content and entertain until people get bored of us. Both art and writing takes time, passion, and effort and a bit of support goes a long way but sometimes you get nothing but silence and it can be more crushing than hate at times, left to wonder if your creations were even worth your time to create or anyone else's to consume.

But aside from that, what also gets me down is that I do actually see people supporting other's writing and encourage more from them but I don't get any of that type of support, feedback, or criticism from those very same people when it comes to mine, despite them being so similar. I tend to get brushed off or ignored or nowhere near as much hype. And I know it sounds like jealousy but it honestly just makes wonder what, is it just my stuff specifically that's just not good enough for them? And it just never seems good enough, no matter how hard I try. I realize there are times it is in fact personal and I have no idea why because they don't tell me and I feel terrible when it ends up confirming my fears, then I worry if it's always the case. That's the stuff that hurts the most, more than people just outright telling me if they don't like or aren't interested in my stuff anymore, which would hurt less.

I know not everyone thinks I should die really but it's easy to think that way in times where I get insults and suicide bait from people shitting on me and what I do more than I get positive or supportive comments. So that's why it feels like people just want me to die, I'm told so in my inbox. I'm not saying I demand endless high praise but just someone simply saying they enjoyed something I posted instead of just silence has a way bigger positive impact than they think but some don't anymore. And if there's a reason why or it isn't personal, I wish they'd tell me so it puts my mind to rest, instead of pretending I don't see blatant disinterest or the ignoring that drives me mad and kills motivation. The hateful people are more vocal and then it feels like nobody else cares and it drags me down.

I swear some people, both general followers and some people I'm closer to are just losing interest and getting sick of me personally and it's hard seeing it happen and seemingly being unable to do anything, making it feel like my time of being capable of doing anything good and likable in their eyes has passed. And it's just hard accepting that and letting it go, especially when you never get the real answers and you're left wondering what went wrong and why you're not good enough anymore. I've had moments of realization where my heart sinks when I present something I'm proud of and I get unenthusiastic responses or silence. And feeling either people drift away or being insulted more often than anything positive gives my sick brain a lot to work with in further attacking me with nasty intrusive thoughts too. But like I said, that last part is on me and I feel I'm just genuinely too mentally ill to handle being on the internet.

I appreciate all of you that do support me and my passion and creations, it might just look silly on the surface with my rambling and gushing but what I create is important to me and it means the world to me that it's enjoyed by anyone else. It gets tough with my mind and negativity I receive but I try not to lose sight of the positive things or forget people enjoy my work, which makes it worth turning my passion and ideas into something I can share. I'm trying to get better at not letting negative and hateful stuff matter and only value the good but sometimes when I'm already dealing with enough privately and come online and see this happening too, it's the little extra push I need to reach the breaking point. But at the same time, when I'm in some of my darkest places with things I don't talk about, coming online and seeing kind words and knowing my stuff is enjoyed means everything and manages to put a smile on my face, no matter how awful I feel. And that's what keeps me creating and sharing for as long as I'm here. Thank you. 💜

yachi first started being curious about you since you were one of the teacher's pet, always lingering around the art teacher asking questions with a tablet in hand

she was nosy, she had to admit

she wanted to sneak a glance whenever you drew on your tablet and you would glance at her if she wants to take a look but she managed to look away before you saw

but she finally founds out what you're doing when some students partake in presentation (even if you didn't want to, the teacher liked you so you had to) and you presented yours

her little heart couldn't handle her excitement when fluid carefully drawn animation popped up on the screen and you looked at your hard work with pride

whatever subject was in the animation you discussed about it with the class and you couldn't help but of course notice the crooked smile that yachi had

she was impressed and filled with so much undescribable feelings, she could cry with how astonishing your work is

after art class yachi decided to approach you and ask a bunch of questions to you and you had the pleasure to answer all of them

you also wanted to cry because of how hyper of a puppy was when yachi would bounce up and down when you started describing about your work and how she would apologize if she was being too excited which you would shake your head to and laugh

you started exchanging numbers and you saved her under "gal who won't stop staring", of course you noticed

she couldn't hide it,,

after finding out where she was after school so you could ask her about art projects or catching up when you're absent, you started going to the club a lot more to also see the boys

they would always see you sliding into the gym and going to one of their managers and asking yachi about something

which they didn't mind much, the simpy duo thought you were stealing her away which you teased them by putting an arm around her as she laughs and says "there was nothing to worry about, y/n doesn't bite"

the whole team suprisingly loves to see your work especially hinata since he would make sound affects for your characters if you haven't added any audio yet

he would leap when your character does a transition or the scenery changes and he would gush about how cool you and your animation were

you, hinata and yachi would walk home admiring your work and yachi would also pull out her drawing as well to show both of you

hinata were both your hype man, he would compliment and point out every detail he loves

(i'm also convinced he has made doodles but they would look wonky but cute)

and since you two were close you always had sleepovers!!

usually it was at hinata's house so you could bond with natsu and she was entertained by your animations that you set up on your projecter

sometimes hinata's mom would pop up and see how it goes and she appreaciates having you over since you were such a kind and close friend of hinata that matches his energy

it was such a blast, stuffing yourselves with snacks and chortling till midnight which hinata's mom would try to shush all of you but she couldn't help but join in because it was so much fun

you would all have headaches though the next day buuut it was worth it~~

whenever you feel out of it, yachi's there

she would always be there to give you snacks or ask you take a few breaks if you worked too much

she would try to scold you and you just can't help but follow because it would be mean of you to ignore her words

and oh they were so wise

it helped you through times when she wasn't even there and it was good that you followed so you didn't hurt your mental health from the get go

yachi and karasuno's volleyball team has inspired you so much about how much team work and pain they went through and your heart stop whenever you remember

your big inspo, yachi who would never stop babbling about you and being right by your side when you need it

you might cry on the tablet you're drawing on which make your crew question on what are you crying about but you held back which also made your crew question why were you smiling so hard

nonetheless, you were almost happy everyday because you could reminisce with the ideas yachi gave you back then which you still kept dearly because they were great plot points

and how you stick close to each character no matter how goofy or chaotic they were, they had a lesson for each time they appear and dissappear

that's how the stadium smelled like, the colours and the adrenaline you felt by cheers from the crowds, you felt like you could fly right now with how much you wanted to scream the team's name and let them notice you

it smelled like the victory the monster duo had, it filled you with so much glee to watch them gain fans from the sidelines

you also felt hinata and kageyama's pride swelling and you could knock your chair over if you kept this up

there he was the orange haired boy who used to be your biggest fan standing in front of you who now has a lot more fans trailing behind him

eventhough he smelled musky and felt sweaty you can't control the urge to hug him and he also can't too

you later hugged kageyama and just spilled all your excitement to both of them on how well the matches went and hinata couldn't resist hugging you again and twirling you around

he planned on telling you all about your manga and how he haven't catched up on it yet on some of it and a pang struck your heart as you teared up which confused hinata

ah, he still remembered

"are you crazy, of course i did!" his boyish laughter was louder than your sobs when he rested your head on his chest and pushed him off, complaining about how sweaty he was

oh you silly goose, of course he did

you also met up with the rest and tumbled into yachi when she appeared around the corner and everyone laughed it out

either of you got a headache as you both help each other up

hinata and kageyama would stand near the third years who held their hearts and congratulated them

which kageyama would smile and nod while hinata would still bashfully scratch his neck while happily thanking them because his seniors were proud of him

you would take a selfie with yachi and hinata, yachi would be the one leaping off the ground and eventhough the picture was a little blurry atleast you could catch both of their smiles

the next time you meet up, hinata was there in his comfy clothes melting into all the pillows you pelted at him and you snuggled right next to him when you both were fresh out the shower

just like the old times, how he would wrap around your arm and yachi would be on your left doing the same

except this time, you were the one snuggling onto hinata's arm

you felt kinda sad that yachi couldn't join since she was really busy

but hinata interrupted your thoughts with a screech when you whipped your head back to see what he was doing

the television showed your blood sweat and tears of the countless projects and art that you did about it, dropping your head on hinata's shoulder as not even a second in, you got a series of shout and yells of eagerness from him

"i added a reference of you somewhere~" "huh! really? did you add kageyama?? he'll text me about it later-"

and the night was drowning in the amounts of laughter and euphoria you two shared,

I've been on Tumblr for only 6 ish months. I'm in my mid 30s and felt really self conscious about reading/interacting with fics at first, like I was "too old" to enjoy it.

As I got more comfortable, I had the mindset of "This writer is super popular, they aren't going to care what I think/have to say/etc. Why would they? I'm just me?" (Compounded with the previous self-conscious feeling if my age) and discarded so many comments and reblogs.

But, I found more recently that I get out of the platform what I put into it. I had to put myself out there and network with other writers.

I started engaging with my favorite writers regularly (belligerenly, in my head but I ignored that negative voice) and worked to promote myself via submitting monthly fic recs. As a result, I've seen my fic-blog grow.

I realized that I didn't need an invitation to join a circle kd my favorites, I just had to go up and introduce myself (as scary as that felt).

IDK if you've done all this yet or not, but it was helpful for me. And sometimes, I don't get as much engagement as others. The internet is full of ebb and flow, so it's hard to know why. But, don't be afraid to promote yourself. As thefact0rygirl puts it, hype yourself like an entitled white man (or something to that effect).

first creation and most recent creation of 2020: ooh, it’s actually my comeback fic after going on a hiatus. blossomed came out in feburary 2020 and my most recent creation is busted in busan. since then the writing style has changed greatly, it’s crazy looking back at blossomed compared to now!

one of your favorite creations from 2020: mm that’s so hard!! all of them are special in their own way. i would give special treatment to camp clover because it was very different. 

a creation you’re really proud of: all of them to this day i can’t believe my masterlist has doubled in size. popular-ish is something i didn’t expect to get the hype it had, and im really proud of myself for being able to capture so much in so little words. 17 going on 27 is also a close second because it kind of felt like a reply to my childhood

a creation that took you forever: hmmm in one process? 17 going on 27. but overall this year i tried my best to tie up loose ends with all my seventeen drafts and finally post them. those fics were particularly difficult because my writing style changed and i’m going back to fics that are 2+ years old i completely forgot the plot about but i needed!! them!! gone!!! 

a creation from 2020 that received the most notes: according to note counter the most notes on a 2020 post goes to remote learning at nearly 1.9k to this date. it’s simultaneously wonderful and overwhelming it’s the fastest a fic has ever gotten this attention and im utterly thankful for it

a creation you think deserved more notes: hummmmm maybe some of my svt fics? ngl i was super disappointed when i didn’t receive a single ask or feedback (feedback that i didn’t have to search in tags through endless reblogs) for blossomed. i think i received my first ask for it in october, which was almost nine months later. in proportion to the amount of notes it got it made me really sad that i had to look so hard for any kind of feedback. it definitely made me a little disheartened knowing many of the people who wrote for svt in the very beginning had gone and i felt very alone for awhile

First of all, congratulations on finding self-shipping!💖 I’m so sorry to hear that S/I content seems to get less attention.😔Sizeable fandoms are much easier to build up an audience in and I really do empathise with you, darling; I write for a small fandom on one of my sideblogs and it’s difficult to get content interaction.  I've done my best to think of as many things as I could to help with getting content interaction, which is applicable to self-shipping or general content creation.

how do I get people to interact with my content (fic/art/etc)?

First, and this might be the most obvious point on this list, use the tagging system. Especially for self-shipping, using unique tags can help you not only to organise things on your blog, but also so that people who follow those tags will see your content. By the same token, of course, anyone who doesn’t want to see that content can block that tag or avoid it all together. Having a clear organised tagging system on your block makes it easier to find things in the future, too!

Ask people for shout-outs. By this I mean, find the people who already have an established audience and send them an ask. Most people will happily publish your ask and give you a promo, but with this one, please check their blog guidelines, their DNI post and/or their Carrd to see if they’re okay to shout you out! If you’re unsure, it’s best to ask them before you submit the request for a shout-out. I would also be happy to shout-out your blog if you would like, darling, even if you’re not in my fandoms! Any kind of exposure on the ‘bigger’ blogs will help you to at least attract attention! 

Ask people to reblog your work. Some self-ship blogs don’t like for their S/I or other content to be reblogged due to the sensitive and personal nature of self-shipping. If you are comfortable with this, however, then on each post you make, say something like reblogs welcome etc. so that people know it’s okay to reblog your content! Tumblr’s algorithm really does rely on reblogs, especially for content creators, so make it clear that you appreciate reblogs! Exposure through the reblog function will help you to build up an audience. Too many people treat this website like Instagram and it’s killing content creation.

Make sure to abide by Tumblr etiquette. If someone reblogs your S/I content, then be sure to swing by onto their blog if you have the time and reblog something of theirs if they’re okay with it, or leave a sweet comment if they’re not. It’s not only polite to reciprocate but it also helps you to build up a supportive network within the fandom, which increases your exposure and therefore helps you to build an audience over time. The self-shipping community is generally tightly knitted so being polite and sharing content all around will help you to gain an audience, too. It’s also really fun to gush over your own and others’ ships!

Be consistent. With your tags, with asking people to reblog, with the content itself... it can be really hard to establish an audience but consistency helps people to get an idea on what to expect from you and your content. The more reblogs you can generate, the more exposure you get, and the more you reciprocate those reblogs from other blogs the more people are likely to engage with your S/I content as they get to know you personally. Half the fun with self-shipping is gushing over your friends and their ships and finding a small group of blogs you can follow and gush with and hype up is a really good way to start to find and build an audience.

What counts as a WIPs?

The short answer is anything. It can be a work you’ve started or a prompt you thought was neat. It can be an idea of an alternative universe you want to work your fandom into. You can offer anything you wanted to try, but maybe have no concrete ideas for, as well (ie: a pairing you’re intrigued by, but have no WIP/HC for).

This event is to encourage you to make something you have wanted to do as a priority.

How many WIPs/prompts can I have?

There is no limit to how many WIPs and/or prompts you can list. We do ask that if you have a good chunk, around 5 or 6 longer ones, that you provide a link to a folder of them on your GDrive. You can always go into details or summaries of some of your favorites in the WIPs/prompt section of your creator post.

Can we include published WIPs as well - or is just stuff that hasn’t yet been shared for public consumption the only WIPs?

Sure can! Anything you want that little boost to help you cross a goal off your bucket list is welcomed!

Can I just have my bidders tell me what they want me to do?

Yes! You could just put your likes and dislikes/do not wants and ask potential bidders to contact you about their ideas or say you’re open to whatever bidders want (with exceptions of your DNWs).

Does the creator-winner relationship work like a commission?

No. You are under no obligation to give anything for credit anything to your winner, although we ask that you do notify your winner of the posting at least. However you want to work with your winner is up to you. If you would like to use this as a way to motivate you to finish something or as a way for someone else to decide what you work on next, and nothing else, that is up to you. As a kindness, we recommend putting your feelings of collabing/working in your winners like/etc. into your creator's notes.

What if I decide to add, drop, or change an auction?

If you decide to add or change anything in your auctions, please DM an admin or send us an email (what2finish@gmail.com). This also needs to be done if you change something on the Sign Up form. Just as long as you have contacted us to let us know if you’re redoing the form or doing a second add-on auction form, we will accept it.

If you do not contact us to tell us you are doing a redo form or doing an add-on form, your current information may not get updated.

If you wish to drop a second auction or drop out as a creator during the Sign up stage, please email us IMMEDIATELY. We understand that these are uncertain times. You do not need to give us a reason, you can simply write an email stating “I do not wish to have a second auction” or “I do not wish to be a creator anymore”.

What should I do for the starting bid?

We suggest starting your bid off low as it encourages bidders to bid.

Please feel free to do tiers for your bids. For example for fanfiction:

“If bidding reaches $20, I will write two of my smaller WIPs for the auction and at $30, two of my longer WIPs. If it goes pass $50, I’ll do two WIPs of bidder’s choice and one small fic that’s under 5k of the winner’s prompt.”

Also, consider your own commission prices or what others’ commission prices are. Your Art Path has a great section of advise for commission prices here.

Still uncertain of your starting bid? Talk to friends in your discord, tumblr, and/or fandom who participated as creators in other fandom charity auctions to ask if they can help you with your starting bid/bid increment. You can also check out Marvel Trumps Hate or Fandom Trumps Hate FAQs for their recommendations.  

Keep in mind, all of the winning bid will be going towards charity.

What should I put for my second auction if both will be for the same creation?

We recommend separating your auctions by fandoms so that your lesser known fandom has it’s own auction to shine in.

If you have multiple fandoms we want to work with, you might separate your auctions by more popular ships in one auction and less popular ships in another.

In reality, you don’t need to have two unique auctions.

What should I put in my “Creator Notes” section?

You can put your tiers here. You can put your limitations on how big or how many of your auction you will do. Be aware if you have something that states “For every $10 past $30 I will write 2k” and the final bid gets to $100, you have now promised at least 14,000 more words to what you initially offered.

What is the deadline for completing my winner(s) works?

The soft deadline for completed works is going to be December 1st, 2021. If you do not think you will be able to meet this deadline, please just keep us at WTF informed.

There is no hard rule for finishing. ‘Finished’ can just mean moving the ball down the court. If it’s another chapter or comic page, etc is up for bid, that’s fine. This event is to encourage you to work on things sitting in your WIP/prompt piles.

We recommend putting the information in your Creator Notes for your auction.

Can I bid as well as be a creator?

Yes! Please feel free to do both. We would love to have you bid to your heart’s (or wallet’s) desire. Join a podbid! Or Seven! Hype up other creators! Ask one of your favorite fandom creators if they’re interested in joining the fun too!

Where and how do I post my completed Auction work?

You can complete it however you prefer! You can post it on tumblr and link the @what2finish blog if it’s a shorter story. You can post on Ao3 in the collection WTF Philippines Relief 2020. If you are posting anywhere else that we ask that you make a tumblr post with a link to the story so we can reblog your story on our blog and mark your Auction work completed.

There are no posting rules to your completed work besides to tag for anything nsfw or possible triggers. You can post it all together or one chapter at a time. You can post multiple series, it’s all up to you.

No. You will need a working email address so we can contact you if you win an auction. Just fill out the bid form during Auction week; November 22nd to November 28th, 11:59:00pm CST.

You can use a fandom name or a nickname, whatever name you are comfortable with.

What is Preview Week?

Preview week is the week when all the creator posts will be upload and the Masterpost of creators will be released on the tumblr. It will give bidders the chance to browse all the auctions before Auction Week to find creators and auctions they want to bid on. This will also give last minute creator sign ups and the mods a chance to make sure everything is spick and span for Auction Week.

Can I contact creators before Auction Week?

Please do! Ask after their auctions! Ask about their WIPs or ideas! Ask about pairings! Clarify their wants and do not wants with them!

In fact, if you have a creator in mind for this charity event, ask them to consider joining!

The Auction ends when I’m unavailable, what do I do?

We understand that with the time difference all around that world, there are bound to be some who are in a time zone that doesn’t align nicely with Central Standard Time. In this case we suggest getting a proxy bidder to help you out. If you cannot find your own, you are more than welcomed to contact us (ask or email) and we will put out a call to our followers for someone who is willing to be a proxy for you.

When will I get my confirmation email I won?

The mod team will be working to get the winner’s emails out to them as soon as the auction ends. Please keep in mind that gmail only allows a certain number of emails to be send out at a time. This means the emails will be sent out in batches and depending on the auction, it might take a few days to get your winning confirmation email.

Please do not get in contact with the creator or donate until you get your confirmation email you have won the auction.

What do I do if I win an auction?

You will get an email within the next two to three days after the auction closes confirming your win and asking you to donate to one of the charities listed. As stated in the last answer above, please do not donate or contact your creator for the auction until after you have received your confirmation email and you have donated.

But, once your have gotten your confirmation email and you have donated, the mods will send an email with both you and your creator. From there, it will be up to you guys to figure out the auction win from there.

Can I donate more than my winning bid?

Yes! The more the merrier. There is no limit to the donations you can make. 

I would like to have the craft/artwork or be part of the creation process as the winner, can I?

That will be between you and the creator you won. If they do not specifically state they will give you their work, they are under no obligation to give it. If you are unsure of their stance, or it is not listed that they are looking to work with the bidder, please reach out to the creator to ask them.

1: Who is your favorite character from your WIP?

From Firebreathers, it’s really difficult to choose a favorite, but right now, probably Gab or Ember!! And for Deity Complex, it’s definitely Hunter!!

2: What makes you most excited to write it?

Honestly? Worldbuilding. Every wednesday on here, I get SUPER excited to write. I just don’t have the time to, sometimes 😅

On a scale from 1-10, how excited are you about this WIP?

15. I’ve been in a near-constant state of hype for it since I FINALLY figured out the plot a while back. And, really, the hype hasn’t disappeared since I started it in 6th grade ;aslkdjfa;sdklfj

Who is your OTP from this WIP?

THERE ARE SO MANY. Some I can’t even mention, either because of character introductions not being out, or spoilers, or both!! The least-spoilery one, I guess, is the throuple I (and characters) have dubbed the Lesbian Trifecta. Lachia Corona + Dawn Aikla + Quartz Meywin. They’re all younger siblings of the book 1 main characters!!!

Name the MCs and 2-3 personality traits for each

Ember Timber: protective, family-oriented, and impulsive; Nimbus Timber: inventive, anxious, and considerate; Gabbro Meywin: reserved, stubborn, and rational; and Iceberg Corona: supportive, sneaky, and inquisitive.

Tell us how this WIP has changed from when you originally came up with it.

Well, it has a plot now. And also nothing to do with flutes. A deeper world, more lore, more purpose, less twelve-year-old dream-y :D

What do you think would be another great title for your WIP?

Honestly, I went through so many titles. I still refer to it as Ehlven in casual conversation, tbh, but Firebreathers is the one I’ve set myself on! I guess something more epic-like could work (Fire Breath was considered) but I think Firebreathers is just a better-fitting name for the tone!

What kind of WIP is it (novel, short story, anthology, etc etc)?

It’s going to be a series of novels! HOPEFULLY I can fit it into a trilogy, but it might end up longer, since I’m not sure how long I want the current book 3 to go.

How would you describe the general mood of your WIP (is it a happy story, sad story, upsetting, etc)?

I’d say hopeful. It’s a story about societal change and the power of the people, so it’s hard to point towards anything else!

What are you proudest of? Go ahead, brag! You deserve it.

I’m proud of the worldbuilding! If you’ve ever seen one of my W/BW posts, I’m nearing 40 questions asked, and I have yet to come up with something off the top of my head, if that helps show how much effort I’ve put into the Ehlverse ;alskdfj;alfkdj

Wasn't it Nomura's fault Versus 13 never came out in the first place though?

It’s almost 2019 and people still think that what happened to Versus is all Nomura’s fault? Even after all what happened last week in Square Enix? Listen, son. That is probably one of the funniest metropolitan legends going around on the internet. Let me try to be objective and explain you. 

EVIDENCE UNDER THE CUT

Let’s start from the basis. What kind of person is Nomura? Is he really such an inconclusive person like most of the Tabata-stans like to think? Hard enough. He’s the creator and director of the Kingdom Hearts saga, which counts at least 10 games/movies/phone games, has a super complex yet completed plot, colloborated with freaking Disney and brought millions of dollars to the Square Enix company. He produced and did the character design for another successful title, The World Ends With You. He did the character design for a BUNCH of Final Fantasy characters, he even directed Advent Children movie, cooperated with Sakaguchi and Kitase for years… i mean, that’s what i call a curriculum. So, think with your own brain: can a person like this really be the single responsible for what happened to Versus?

Of course, Nomura isn’t jesus christ, and he has indeed a weird personality, like most of artists have. For ex, he’s an introvert, he’s very sensitive, he has his complex vision of things, he isn’t really able to endure a lot of pressure and he needs time to figure out things. Also, he doesn’t apparently like to be forced to do what other people say. This type of personality caused him a couple of troubles in the past, since Square Enix liked to have such an artist bringing money to the company, but at the same time kinda hated not being able to control him.

In fact, that’s more or less what happened according to a lot of articles and interviews collected in the last years (and if you can read italian, message me and i’ll give you even more sources): 

When Nomura started to work on ff13versus, there were a lot of things going on in Square Enix. Three major games were supposed to form the ambitious Fabula Crystallis saga and Nomura was glad to take the direction of ffxiii versus. He dreamt big about it: since it was not a numbered chapter, he really wanted to make it different, with extremist themes and innovative gameplay. Nomura invested a LOT in the Versus game, especially on the emotional level (if you saw him during the rare interviews of that time,you would know it. Nomura gets extremely vulnerable whenever it comes about his own creations). For this kind of project, he clearly needed a lot of money and staff and Square Enix initially promised it to him. 

Was Nomura a naive idealist in dreaming out loud? He certainly was.

Because Square Enix had other priorities. For example, the engines.Play Station 3 offered great opportunities but the research team to work on the new engine was formed only after the Fabula Crystallis saga’s announcement, which lead to a literal race against time from the very start. Nomura admitted immediately that the engine wasn’t ready to stand at the level of what he wanted to do(which was VERY ambitious)but Square Enix wanted anyway to present the next games even if it was very soon. When the engine, named “Crystal Tools” was kinda ready, a huge group of people started to work on FFXIII. When i say huge, i mean huge. Nomura was left alone with few people in his department and of course he did what he can with the staff he had until 2008.As a matter of fact, in 2008, Nomura had already arranged almost everything in the plot and in the concept design and in the trailer that was showed during the same year the chocobros and Stella made their first appearance, but … the game didn’t have basically anything else. Just the plot and the concept. Too many things had to be done, and nobody was ready to make them. In fact, Square Enix was focusing on FFXIV, which was back then a huge flop to be saved. For years Square Enix struggled with this problem, took staff and money away from Nomura in order to save the online game that couldn’t compete with other games of that time. I said this in simple words, but the operations connected to FFXIV had  disastrous consequences on Versus. Here we’re talking again about engines, programs, obsolete platform etc etc: all these things mean nothing for most of us fans, but they’re extremely important for games development. Square Enix’s dark time began in 2011 and ended in 2013, with millions of dollars damage. Not only Versus was a victim of the attempts of saving FFXIV, also other titles. 

In all this mess, Nomura released again a long Versus trailer, but he said once again that no matter how detailed the trailer looked, the project was far from being started. Nomura even said to “forget about Versus”, because he knew that he had no possibilities to work on it. He was alone with a couple of people, how was he supposed to work on it? No money, no staff. Yeah, what would you have done in his place? 

Nomura wasn’t happy about this messy situation. Because of it, he “broke up” with Yoshida, he basically didn’t make any appearance in 2011 and 2012, he basically had a depressive phase. In spite of this, he managed to focus on another important title like Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance (@ KH fans: DDD was written in Nomura’s dark time and this may explain a lot of things lol)

No matter how horrible this impasse was, Nomura still was deeply attached to FFXIII VERSUS. In those years, in a sort of desperation act he considered the possibility of turning the versus game into an action game, or even a musical. Anything, but to renounce to this project. 

Then, Play Station 3 reached his death time, and Play Station 4 raised. To say it in simple words, almost all the work they did on Versus had to be thrown away, because Square Enix decided to move the game on the new console. 

Back then, Hajime Tabata’s team was the only one free after the release of FF Type-0, so Yoichi Wada decided to integrate Nomura’s team with it. Tabata and Nomura were a good team at the beginning, actually. One was pragmatic, the other visionary, they were supposed to be the perfect combination. 

But …  in 2012 Square Enix lost 105 millions of euros, Square Enix’s CEO Yoichi Wada resigned and Yosuke Matsuda took over. Square Enix really needed to change things for good and start anew, so in 2013 they quickly announced Kingdom Hearts III and FFXV to try to hype fans again. 

FFXIII VERSUS - now FFXV - was presented at the E3 in 2013 with another trailer, but again the trailer was deceptive. because it was realized completely in CGI. In fact, the game would have been completely changed in the next years. In spite of this, Nomura finally seemed to have a good time thanks to it and to Kingdom Hearts III announcement. 

But after the E3, Nomura’s presence in the FFXV department started to weaken— 

And then, the new CEO Yosuke Matsuda reorganized entirely the Square Enix departments. So after 7 years, Nomura was moved away from the FFXV’s direction and replaced with Tabata before he could even take a breath. It was just the CEO’s decision. Matsuda thought that two other projects needed Nomura the most, aka KINGDOM HEARTS 3 and FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE.

If we want to be honest, though, we are forced to admit that “we take you away from ffxv because kh3 and ffviiremake need you more” was just an excuse to hide something more painful that happened inside the Square Enix’s building walls. For years, Square Enix refused to explain things in detail, Tabata himself said with a cold expression that it was a decision the “high places” took. 

All we can notice is that after 2013, Nomura clearly started to reject every FFXV’s mention. He acted all along like Versus was his baby and really was offended when Square Enix took it away from him. 

What happened after is history: Tabata completely overturned the game concept, the story needed to be rewritten and some scenes and characters were repurposed or removed. Final Fantasy XV sold well at the beginning (more than 8 milions copies i think?) but mostly because it was advertised for 10 years straight. As a matter of fact, the hype slowly dissapeared update after update, and yes, the DLCs didn’t go well as expected and actually caused a big loss to the Square Enix company, which lead to Tabata’s resignation.

So, long story short.

Whatever was the real reason beyond the change of director in FFXV, point is that Nomura wasn’t fired, he was promoted with even more responsability. So, if his contribute to Square Enix was really so terrible, wouldn’t he be forced to reseign like Yoichi Wada and Hajime Tabata? yeah, that’s something you should think about. 

Most of Final Fantasy XV fans who blame Nomura for Versus’ failure don’t even know half of the things i wrote above. They just contribute to spread this stupid rumor, without having any source. 

You can like FFXV, you can like Tabata etc, but truth is that this game has been run very wastefully for 12 years by the SQUARE ENIX COMPANY AS A WHOLE. 

FFXIII VERSUS, NOMURA, FFXV AND EVEN TABATA… THEY ALL SUFFERED AS A RESULT.

Review Rules!

We can all agree that reviews rule! I find them very fun to do because I get to go through a lot of people’s wonderful dragons and talk about them to my heart’s content. You find them very fun because you love your hard work and appreciate people validating your fashion/gene sense and your attention to detail or you like to bully your own creations you monsters! But at the end of the day, if I’m not leveling fodder, I need to be doing SOMETHING to earn that sweet, sweet, dragon cash. So! if this just isn’t your gig, block the tags #lair review and #roast review, or unfollow, because your enjoyment of your dash absolutely comes first!

From now on, unless otherwise specified in my description, I’ll be open for PWYW reviews. So here’s what you need to do!

1-PM me or send a one-way CR I accept Treasure, Gems, Apparel, and Baldwin mats! I won’t accept your CR or retrieve items from the PM until I’m actively working or completed with your lair review (this is so that you can keep an eye on my activity, since I work very strange hours and so it’s likely that at some point you’ll hit a delay- whether I’m asleep, at work, or just busy- if you’re willing to wait, you’ll get your review! ... and if you’re NOT willing to wait, just send a CR and cancel it if I take too long. I have a super annoying voice and I’m far less put-together in vc than in text. if you do manage to bribe me for a vocal review, you’ll receive a vocaroo link via PM (FR PM or Tumblr message). Currently I’m uncomfortable posting my voice directly on my tumblr, but if you choose to share it with your friends (i.e. over a discord or messenger service) that’s fine.

FAQ-ish:

What kind of apparel do I accept? Anything! first of all it’s PWYW, and second of all I’m a fairly new player and I’ve chosen to spend my dragon cash on lair expansions, genes, and art, so a lot of the apparel I collect is from usermade bundles, MP bundles, and outfits specifically bought for a dragon that I dressed in the dressing room. In the end, if I don’t want it, I can melt it!

How many dragons will I do? Usually anywhere from 1-9! I tend to do 3+, but PWYW will always kind of end up on a sliding scale based on a list of how much you send, how much I like your dragons (or how roastable they are), and how much time I have.

How will it be tagged? I will @ you and pray that tumblr actually pings you instead of sending the @ directly into the void. On tumblr, reviews will also be tagged as either #lair review or #roast review , and often as #dragon share and #long post. If you would prefer me not to use the dragon share or long post tags, please let me know!

What’s an average guideline for pricing? Again, it’s pwyw, and all of the variables (love/hate/time/demand) will always affect your review. However I’ll just say it’s a yardstick of about 10k(10g)/dragon.

What if I’m sad? If you’re sad, or sad and broke, please PM me. You don’t have to talk about what’s getting you down, but if I have the extra time, I’ll put in the extra effort. (As long as I don’t feel taken advantage of. That’s no fun, either. :( So please be kind.)

What if I’ve ordered from you before? I love return customers! Chances are, on the first review, I didn’t get to everyone that I wanted to, because of Variables. If you’re a return customer, tell me! I’ll go back and find your last review, and try to make sure (if I don’t just remember off the top of my head) that new dragons get the spotlight! or hot seat

Could be because it's Rose's first event. They might be trying to ease her in, and pairing her with Colin for both panels will do that, as he's now a pro on the con circuit. I've seen it done many times before. Once she finds her feet, I'm sure you'll see solos again.

You make an interesting point, however If this is what Creation did they owe some refunds.

If Vancouver is a training con, then the con goers should have been given a discount.  If the talent isn’t good enough or experienced enough to handle the basic thing they are being paid for, then the ticket buyers shouldn’t have to shell out full price. It should be cheaper than the other cons. 

If they needed to pair her with someone who is really good, then they should have put her with Karen David. Few probably care about seeing Karen alone, and Karen is excellent at a panel. Much better and more comfortable than Colin will ever be.  If Rose required training wheels then this is what they should have done so not as to devalue the entire convention. 

You don’t bog down the MAIN ATTRACTION with the trainee when people have paid thousands of dollars to be there. That is a terrible customer experience.  

(For all the reasons above, I’m still leaning towards thinking it was Colin’s call.)

Your last sentence says it all. Colin is not where you cut the schedule. EVER. You never cut the headline, you shorten the opening act.

Since out of every one booked on Saturday, Creation is paying Colin the most, you’d think they would realize he’s the draw. I’m sure they do.  This another reason why I’m afraid it may be his decision.

I can’t make any guarantees.
