i rolled my eyes so hard when that happened. same with the 6 nuggets scene. i blame it all on the duffer brothers. like literally nothing else. just them. 😭 s4 had the worst characterization by FAR. stranger things writers need to realize that one of the MOST beloved aspects of this show is the characters. yes the story is great and creative and has endless possibilities but the heart of this show is the characters, their development and their relationships (both platonic and romantic). to make steve pine for nancy AGAIN after all the s2/3 events was pure and utter bullshit. everytime i think abt it i want to rip my hair out bc not only does it not make any sense regarding steve's character development but it also doesn't make any sense for how they build jancy. like 3 seasons they've shown us that nancy and jonathan are great together (they have their ups and downs, but up until s4 they didn't have any major issues, not to mention they're so very everlark tethered so i like them idc) and how much steve and nancy do not fit as a couple, then they retcon all of this and try to make them a thing again. AND not only is that enough, but they have several side characters actively rooting for them. DESPITE NANCY BEING IN A RELATIONSHIP WITH JONATHAN?!!??!!??

why can't st writers just make them friends? they would work GREAT as friends.

alright time to write an essay detailing whatever yaoi has done to my girl nancy wheeler. so like, even when it comes to yaoi shippers nancy has had stonathan, harringrove, AND steddie over four seasons with steddie already having massive popularity + the other shippers, wheras thankfully eleven only has to deal with byler shippers when it comes to the victimization. but not to diminish eleven any more because she has def gone through it in fandom, im going to get into nancy's stuff: you will notice all three ships she supposedly gets in the way of (ignoring jargyle because the shippers are chill in my experience) involve steve harrington, AKA the most popular character if i had to guess and the white boy of the month. see, they were dating at one point in s1 and s2. the breakup was messy. like he kinda was complicit in her slutshaming at one point and didnt let her grieve her dead best friend properly and she ambiguously (as in nobody can fucking decide when the break up was) cheated on him so yeah. messy. mutually. if not more on steve's side given he was a bit of an asshole in s1-2 but gets better. yadda yadda fast forward to harringrove in particular, AKA steve x the guy who attacked a black child and abused his younger sibling (and im not attacking anyone thats just. what happened). basically 90% of them try to convince people nancy is abusive for the two arguments that occurred and is a slut and privileged (never mind steve being probably the most well off member of the main cast + hes a white guy in the 80s) blah blah blah. also ironic they call her abusive OFTEN when billy (one half of harringrove) kinda like threatens his sister max and breaks her things and otherwise abuses her Often. but yeah. they hate her for breaking his heart. they hate her for getting in the wya of their ship possibly. they hate her in general. add that to the general fandom misogyny and suddenly a large number of people are writing essays about how much they hate her and how she's a piece of shit, actually. fast forward to s4 and steddie and a new problem arises: steddie shippers keep flooding her character and ship tags with primarily steddie. so now your options regarding her are mlm ships and mlm shippers shitting on her. also keep in mind there is now more content for half of that ship, a guy who shows up for an hour and dies in the same season, than nancy, a mc. and if you like nancy ships like jancy or ronance, too bad those tags are flooded as well. as in someone did analytics in august for ronance i think and at one point the majority of main pairings in the ronance ao3 tags itself was steddie. either way both ships usually end up as side ships or bait into a steddie centric fic or tumblr post. or nancy ends up third wheeling and getting them together. as a nice bonus (not really) recently steddie shippers have decided that they too hate nancy and have entire posts and common plots (i have seen tumblr ficlets/hc's and people discussing this as a common trope for steddie fics on ao3) about how nancy was a horrible person who damaged steve's self esteem and ability to be in a relationship or something from a break up, as if the relationship wasnt mutually harmful and compounded by nancy's whole dead best and possibly only friend thing. and whoops for ships like ronance that isnt allowed either because steve's friend isn't allowed to interact with his ex despite the fact that said friend literally said he was an ass in the s1-2 timeline. all of this making it impossible to find any positive content without it being interrupted for a character who, if i remember correctly, has almost as much screentime as eleven (and eleven at least has popular fan content and other ships that dont somehow loop around to byler/mike). and whats worse is that while canon doesnt have yaoi victimization it does have heteronormative bullshit in which she is forced into a love triangle with the same guys TWO TIMES. she literally cant win so let her win a poll maybe also sorry this is super fucking long <3

hi im back i forgot abt this acc. anyway i wanna rant about what the fuck the duffers turned steve into in season 4.

literally what happened???? seasons 2 & 3 gave steve so much character development; he acknowledged that he was a terrible boyfriend towards nancy, and began to move on. then s4 fucked it all up and somehow he's in love with nancy still? like it frustrates me so much, sure nance is the one who got away but i dont think he really knew her.

ive seen a ton of people talk about this; if nance and steve were to get back together, she'd be running away from her dreams and becoming what she hated the most. her parents. jonathan is fully supportive of her aspirations to become a journalist, while i bet steve doesnt even know that shes interested in it so much.

lalala team jancy, team ronance... i just want what will be best for nance, or for everyone for that matter. BUT WE ALL HAVE ONE ENEMY: stancy.

there are just so many things WRONG with that ship. i am genuinely so frustrated that this shit is CANON. like im genuinely so upset over it...

the REAL nancy would not ever consider going back to steve. sure, with the strain her and jon have atm, she'd probably think abt it. but she's a smart girl! she knows why they didnt work out, i mean he hurt her!! completely disregarded her trauma!! even if thats in the past, their dreams are just way different!

i want to preface this by saying don't send me hate, i am not a stancy shipper. jonathan ily. well, ronance ily more, but.

anyway the duffers like subverting tropes, right? that's been established. and so i think the trope of the asshole jock "losing" the love triangle, or not getting a good ending is something they are going to go against.

also nancy and jonathan had that whole fighting narrative in s3 where they were just kind of on different wavelengths about everything, then move into season four, where they don't interact all season except for like, one hug at the end and her saying she was glad he was protecting mike.

hell, jonathan and argyle were literally talking about "slow motion breaking up with nancy"

and then on the flipside we have nancy and steve talking about the future and having kids and stuff (ok steve 🙄) and nancy making goo goo gaga heart eyes all season, steve canonically still being in love with her, tender injury tending trope etc, etc, just a bunch of intimate moments.

to me its the same as how midleven has no cute moments in all of season four, but byler has a bunch of heart to hearts and tender emotional music. they clearly are pushing you towards one ship. if jancy doesn't interact all season, but stancy are staring lovingly at eachother every three seconds, i think we can see which one they want us to root for.

also steve has kind of, idk, earned it? (not that steve has earned dating nancy i mean, just from a narrative perspective, he has developed enough that we want him to have a 'good' ending, which is apparently with nance) like, his character arc went from being an asshole who was really annoying and a bit of a douche to nancy (that one scene where nance was like 'no stop i need to get to class'- a playful no, but still- and he didn't listen) to caring about the kids, being okay with just a friendship with robin, bonding with eddie (cuz s1 steve would have snap judged him and bullied the shit out of him) and basically just completing his character development.

so he is quote unquote "good enough" for nancy at this point. we want him to have a happy ending.

also (and this is kind of a weak argument, and i personally disagree with this notion, but its just adding on top of other stuff) i feel like they won't want to have byler endgame and jancy endgame because the homophobes will just have more ammo to run with (tHeY wOuLd bE rElAtEd iF jAnCy gOt mArRiEd)

anyway that whole plot of jonathan not wanting to go to college with nancy was useless imo if not to sow the seeds of discord in their relationship.

tldr: i think stancy's happening but im unhappy about it :<

note: i’m more focusing on the thematic and meta stuff to determine whether it gonna happen or not

4. Jargyle

i mean, it’s cute, but there is very little evidence for this happening. the only reason i could see the writers doing it would be to give jonathan another love interest after a likely jancy breakup. I mean, neither of them seem the most straight to me, but not in a way that makes it seem that their relationship could be anything more than platonic. besides, if half of the ships on this list end up being canon, when you add it to the other canon ships, then adding jargyle would really make it a bit cramped in the romance department

3. Ronance

the chemistry is there! nancy and robin are looking at eachother in those posters, the same way all the other (basically) canon ships are. it might be a thing relating to getting the other person unvecna’d, but then it’s kinda weird that jopper is doing it. also, i feel like nancy being queer could also lead to some actual sibling bonding with you-know-who. good vibes here all around, plus it’s one of my favorite w/w ships ever!

however, there are some things that make me less sure it’ll happen. first of all, vickie. the only reasons i see robin and vickie not happening is A. vickie dies (lame), or B. vickie doesn’t like girls (unlikely). from the way it’s been building up it’s nigh impossible some sort of romantic confrontation (or something like that) between them won’t happen, and it would be kinda weird if it was built of that robin liked vickie only for her to end up with nancy, unless vickie dies, which would be not very cool (but i could see happening in vol 2).

second of all, i have a feeling nancy is gonna die, if not in vol2 then in season 5. but that’s an entire other post, so i won’t say much else. i’d really like this ship to happen, but i won’t be surprised if it doesn’t.

2. Steddie (bisexual steve)

steddie just makes sense for a lot of reasons! steve having an arc where he realizes he’s bisexual has been set up SO well, it works perfectly with his character, it would be a shame if it were wasted. eddie is heavily gay/queer coded, making it perfect for steve to realize things about himself. plus, it would be perfect for the kids to have someone they already look up to be queer, and make them more comfortable with themselves. im about 75% sure that steve is bisexual.

the only problem here is that eddie has some massive death flags in vol2. i really don’t want this to happen, but i can’t ignore the signs. but if he DOES survive vol2, then i believe it’s extremely likely we’ll get steddie in s5. if he doesn’t live, then it’s possible that steve could end up with jonathan, bc of the likely jancy breakup and the fact that it would be poor writing if stancy got back together. i think we’ll for sure see some queer steve stuff in s5.

1. Byler

it’s happening 100%. i have never been this confident in a queer ship (or any ship for that matter) before. i am so confident in byler happening that i am going to schedule a post on july 1st celebrating it. there is no doubt in my mind. too me it’s so obvious it’s happening that i feel like it’s redundant to explain to anybody who’s seen the show why. there are so many reasons (both external and internal) why byler is going to happen that im not even going to list them, just watch the show.

the question is not IF byler is happening, but WHEN byler is happening. In my opinion it would be better if they are established by the end of vol2, not only to haze out the homophobes early, but to give the relationship time to grow so we can see them as a fully fledged couple in s5 before it ends. there are other reasons, but those are the main ones. however i could also see the writers not having them get together yet, and only confirm that they both have feelings for eachother so they can get together early/mid s5 and we can watch them navigate a new relationship and what it means.

my least favourite thing about them: hmm i find that she can be a bit selfish and she tends not to be able to look past her own issues so it's hard for her to help others out, not that she lacks empathy but yea she gets too wrapped up in her own shit. but she definitely improved a lot more after season 1 !!! :) we love some character development
