🍓 How I got into writing fanfiction:

I took a big break from writing (years) and I was slowly getting back into it when I watched Spy x Family. I had registered to take a screenplay writing class during the fall of 2022. It was summer and I didn't want to start working on my big project before class started, but I didn't want to stop writing either, so I thought I could have a "summer project." That summer project was Last Days of Operation Strix.

Needless to say, it took me longer than a summer to write it 😂I had never written a fanfic before (I mostly wrote original fiction), and for me that fic was my playground to write and do whatever I wanted and I absolutely loved the experience.

Inquisition:

Triptych: (Elowen/Cullen) This is my almost--kind of--not really a love triangle fic. I wanted to explore the aftermath of breaking up with Solas since the game doesn't really address how Lavellan feels directly afterward. So this is kind of a "who am I when I'm not yours?" kind of a story with a slow burn besides.

The Red Crossing Arrangement: (Adahlena/Cullen) I've said plenty about this AU, but it's a world in which the Second Exalted March never happened and the elves live in autonomous nations in the Dirthavaren/Halamshiral regions (more specific explanation here). In order to seal the peace accords, Lavellan has to choose a husband from among human representatives.

Big Bang fic: I can't say much about this! But this one is Salshira/Cullen, very grand in scale and full of pain and action and I am excited about it c:

Various Book of Memories chapters: I have mostly finished Leander and Adhlea's disastrous first visit to the Chantry and I also have a questionable nightmare chapter, which...might be too sad to post. I haven't decided yet haha. Also an extension of the oaths piece I posted here.

Shoulder the Skies: Avvar AU (Elowen/Cullen), focused on language, communication, and cultural transmission (loosely inspired by various ME first contact/translator off AUs)

Saltwater and Sea-Strand: (Emma/Cullen) Mermaid AU! I originally intended to finish this for Mermay and....uh that could still technically happen. Emma is left on an island with elven ruins to research them and discovers far more than she expected.

Stardust In Her Hair: (Josie/Salshira) A piece about family and acceptance set during the ball at Halamshiral (this is...technically done, I'm just fiddling with the tone at the end)

Origins:

I am still tinkering with the idea of doing a full Origins retelling, but my dedication to keeping my fic as close to canon as possible has hobbled me a bit here (from the sheer amount of research and specific videos I need to look up). Everything is in one doc at the moment, but there are two pieces I've been toying with posting separately on AO3.

Amanecer: The first night Zevran actually stays the whole night; yet another step on the "neither of us want to admit that there are a lot of feelings involved here" road

Contrivances: I posted a snippet of this a few weeks ago, but this one is Wen finally putting her foot down about the way Zev casts himself as an object/tool. (It's um. It's mostly her blowing him, and the expression of affection/intimacy without reciprocation vs affection as currency)

(currently unnamed) piece about the fight with Loghain and the evolution of Wen's friendship with Alistair; this is really her taking a hard look at her choices and deciding she doesn't want him to have to make the same ones

DA2:

And Shed Our Sorrows: Hawke leaving Ferelden for Kirkwall, inspired by "Stay I Pray You" from Anastasia

Royal Flush: Hawke cheats at cards; inspired by that post a while back that said something along the lines of "if you can't laugh during sex then what is the point"

Signifying Nothing: Hawke and grief; regarding the week/s immediately following Leandra's death

Give Ourselves Away: Exploring the role of touch in Hawke and Fenris's relationship, especially the way physical contact and healing acts as a sort of stand-in for more overt intimacy

And various expansions of ficlets, especially The Small Hours, Lend a Hand, and A Fond Farewell

(And it's not writing but!) The Fenris scarf c: I'm about ten/eleven inches in and I really like the way the favor section came out

...so I have written three novels in various iterations, but I am always fiddling with them. On the off chance I ever publish any of them, I don't want to name them here, but the general gist is:

Death's granddaughter reluctantly sends ghosts on to the afterlife in lieu of working her shitty day job, until the woman who helped raise her vanishes and upsets the balance of magic. Now, Araceli has until All Souls' Day to get her back or things in her small town are about to get a lot more spectral. (This is sort of...a way to grapple with death and memory; I love urban fantasy dearly, and I think the role of "unfinished business" is sort of funny to think about in conjunction with the living as well as the dead. Also, I wanted to write a protagonist who tackles the otherworldly with the explicit "yeah, well I am off shift in half an hour so...not my problem" kind of energy) (I am almost done with the second draft of this and it is so much tighter than the first iteration; I can kind of track my own writing progress by how much more coherent the themes are this time around)

Lucita is the chief administrator in a werewolf pack. She's settled into it gradually, but her life is abruptly wrenched off course when her ex girlfriend petitions the pack for help. Something is killing the witches on their own land, and though investigation is far from Luci's job description and her new senses are foreign to her, she is about to find out that in this, as most things, she doesn't have much of a choice but to act. (Like most werewolf stuff, this one is a lot about the conceptual division between logic and feeling, and finding a balance between mind and body)

Fairy godmothers give gifts; unfortunately, not all gifts are good ones. Amalinda was given a gift as an infant that forces anyone who looks at her bare face to see the one they love most instead. To avoid living as someone else until she dies, she leaves her powerful family in the dark of night and takes up a humbler life in the borderlands. As the sole trader with the mysterious Godchildren who live deep in the woods, she hopes to avoid detection for as long as possible. (This is...sort of a Sleeping Beauty retelling if you look at it sideways, but it's more about how identity is shaped by environment and intent.)

2022 Writerly Year Review

Total number of WIPs worked on this year. Oh lord, hold please as I count all the drafts and partially done stuff in Scrivener.... 7 total. 8 if you include What Leads You Here, which fully drafted, but in the editing phase.

WIPs neglected this year. I honestly don't know djsaklfdjslkfjkldas I continue to neglect my one Celes/Terra fic I abandoned when 13 Sentinels hijacked my brain, so there's that 🙃 I promise I'll return to it one day.

Fandoms I've written in. 13 Sentinels, Critical Role, Final Fantasy (VI, VII, IX, and X), Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury, My Dress-Up Darling, and Pyre

Total word count. Uh, posted to AO3? 287,882. Written? A little over 500k

Looking back, did you write more than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you expected? MORE. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY MORE.

Did you take any writing risks this year? There were a handful of fics that I banged out in a single day, quickly edited them, and slapped them onto AO3. Are they amazing works of literature? Hell no. Were they super fun to write? Hell yeah. I need to just… relax with editing more and let myself do this more often. I swear some of my better-received fics are when I go "you know what? fuck it" and release it into the world.

Do you have any goals for the new year? Not write as much lolsob. Also finish What Leads You Here along with a handful of WIPs. Maybe even revisit that Celes/Terra WIP if I have time/energy!

Biggest disappointment? Not so much in my own writing, but just lack of engagement with some of my fics. Then again, that's par for the course when you write A) not-so-popular characters, B) gen fic, and C) stories involving death and angsty bits. Also seeing my fluffy G fics doing better than my smutty fics in the 13 Sentinels fandom just… continues to baffle me to this day. It's LITERALLY the only fandom I've ever been in where smut does worse numbers-wise and I don't get it.

Biggest surprise? I wrote something for Critical Role!! I've been a longtime watcher and enjoy the show, but I've done my best to staaaaay away from the fandom 😰 plus I tend to wait until I finish something before I ever consider writing a fic for it, just so I can have the whole picture, so to speak. But one particular episode just set me off and I had to write something to hold me over until the next episode 😭

Ahhh the power of posting fics near the release of a popular thing. And also longfics lol.

What's your own favorite story of the year? I feel like this changes on a daily basis lol I love all of them for different reasons. Lucid has a close place to my heart bc I was Very Upset to find close to no m!Byleth/Gatekeeper fics in an incredibly popular/active fandom. Also really love how Like You, Only Sweeter turned out, which was an incredibly self-indulgent story for me (I just wanted them to smooch)

Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion. Nearly all of my 13 Sentinels fics bc the fandom is small and niche lolsob. But also Marinate, which granted, I posted the last week of 2022, but still.

Most fun story to write. What the Water Gave Me, which very quickly snowballed out of control into its own thing. I had a blast writing this mermaid AU and thinking of lore for this world!

Most unintentionally telling story. I'm not sure if this means like… a story that utilized more telling as opposed to showing or just… telling about me as an individual. Either way, I'm genuinely not sure? A lot of aspects of myself are sprinkled across my stories, but isn't any work of art?

My favorite part of fandom this year. WHAT DO YOU MEAN I HAVE TO PICK ONE?????? Meeting so many cool and incredibly talented people. Starting a Discord server with good friends. Applying (and getting accepted!) to a bunch of amazing zine projects. Participating in all the secret santa events and fic exchanges. Being late to a fandom and getting to experience things for the first time. Watching my friend react throughout their 13 Sentinels playthroughs. Collaborating with a lovely art friend to make our own damn zine. Getting to share my longfic with the small, yet vastly passionate community. And just… so so many more moments that made me smile and be forever grateful. If we've interacted at all, even for a brief moment, thank you for making 2022 a little brighter.

Hey, everyone, I'm so happy to be back online - I think I was only gone for a week so that announcement was very extra of me - and to be introducing my first writing challenge! I'm so honored and flattered that so many people enjoy my work, and I'm incredibly grateful for your support since I joined this community. Tumblr is my greatest escape, and you've made it a very welcome and comforting one. 

A sense of community and friendship is particularly important in these trying times, and I extend my heartfelt prayers to everyone struggling right now. I'm here to listen if there's anything you need to say, and I'm sorry I can't do much more than be a metaphorical shoulder to cry on, and to offer this distraction as a brief reprieve from whatever you might be going through.

In order to present a gift of relief, and to share and create more stories of heroism - not that any of it can ever compare to the courage displayed by our health professionals and essential workers these days - and to honor and promote our collective of Marvel fanfic writers, I've decided to host a writing challenge. You don't have to follow me to participate - although that would be appreciated - you just need to follow the rules I've outlined under the cut. If you need clarification on anything, don't hesitate to ask! I hope you'll join, and I look forward to seeing what everyone comes up with. 

Rules:

Your fic can be about any character(s) from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. You can also include original characters that you create. If you want to write a romantic fic, I think it goes without saying that it shouldn't be underage (or having an excessive age gap), non/dub-con, incest, abuse, power imbalance/manipulation (e.g. employer x employee or teacher x student), etc. 

The sky’s the limit when it comes to the type or genre of the story, so let your imagination fly! You can write reader-inserts, pairings of pre-existing characters, OCs, or even just solo fics about the character you've chosen. I'm open to canon fics, AUs, fluff, smut, angst, romance, platonic fics, and whatever else you guys can dream up. (If you're writing smut, please let me know, as there are some additional guidelines I'm setting for that.) 

Word count is minimum 250 words, and anything above 500 words must have a keep reading tab. Multi-chapter fics will obviously be accepted - and with a lot of enthusiasm! - but please make a masterlist for any such series.

The deadline for submission is the 31st of December, 2020.

So I hope that this activity can provide some semblance of hope for others that feel the way I do, and if not, then at least a little escape.

2020 Creator Wrap

And now, onwards to my 2020 Favorite Works List!

I didn’t write nearly as much as some of you guys did. And though I did exceed my goal of putting out 1 fic per month, I don’t have 5 solid ones I’m proud of. So I’ll just list 4 fics here:

01 // Growing Pains

I’ve always been very nervous about reccing this one, because it broaches a topic that I don’t really have a right to claim? I’m not transgender myself, but I simply adore the trans Dick Grayson headcanon so much it singlehandedly brought me back to the DC fandom and restarted my fanfic-writing habit for 2020 😂😂 plus the writing quality isn’t half bad, and I still really like the idea/metaphor this little story started with and grew from. 

Fave moment (besides the obvious):

"Ka-Pow!!" The boy ventriloquised. Lego Robin sailed through the air in his fingers. One stubby, outstretched leg made contact with a Lego henchman, knocking all the surrounding baddies over like bowling pins. "Sorry Mr. Bad Guys, guess it's way past your bedtime too!"

"Good job, Robin." The boy lowered his prepubescent voice and tried to affect Batman's gravelly timbre as much as possible. In his other hand, he walked Lego Batman across the floor of the crime scene. "How about we round them up and leave it for the Commish? It's getting quite late."

"Oh oh! Can I have cookies on the ride back?"

The boy swivelled Lego Batman's grinning face around. "I don't see why not."

Another night out in Lego Gotham City, another day saved by the Dynamic Duo. This called for a celebration indeed. The boy set the pair of heroes down by the Lego Batmobile and reached over to his own plate of Alfred's after-school chocolate chip cookies. He took his sweet time with the last piece, savouring each bite, sighing at the way it melted on his tongue.

02 // Transference 

This is my best-performing fic in terms of the kudos to hits ratio, so I feel validated in being proud of this one :’) It’s a pretty good marker of the distances I’ve covered since getting serious about reading the comic source material end of 2019, as you can see from the much broader and varied cast of characters I focused on for this story. It also definitely cemented - to me, at least - the fact that I can write action scenes. When I went into “Second Chances” (a fem Jay fic) earlier this year, I was so nervous about writing the action sequence there, because I’ve never written a serious action scene up until that point! To me, this fic definitely showcases the growth I’ve experienced as a writer this year ^_^

Fave moment: (CONTAINS SPOILERS, PLEASE READ THE FIC FIRST IF YOU HAVEN’T!)

When the trio return, Ivy takes her place at the meeting table with a severe expression on her face. She chooses her words carefully, when she speaks. "The odds aren't pretty. We just accepted 100 refugees over the weekend, and the Green is still repairing itself after last week's attack."

Rose exchanges a glance with Jason. He gives her hand a reassuring squeeze, though he's not looking any better than she feels.

"But, each and everyone of us stayed behind to defend the Garden, because we all believed in giving a sanctuary for the civilian survivors out there.

"So bring them here. I'll take them in."

No sooner has Ivy finished the sentence, than Zatanna and Constantine have fired up their teleportation portal, and Harley's cheerful "Good luck!" is lost to the mad dash off to the rescue mission. The rest of the Shadowpact scramble after Rose as she launches herself through the portal—

—and slams into Arsenal, pushing him out of the way seconds before a meteoric explosion of green fire incinerates the very spot he'd been standing in.

03 // Paying It Forward

This one is important to me if only for the reason that it’s the first time I’ve written character dialogues that flowed. And I didn’t even need to plan them out meticulously beforehand! Do you know how rare that is for me as an ESL writer? Dialogues have been the bane of my existence since I started writing as a wee teen. Luckily, the Titans TV show has some solid character dynamics for me to fall back on. And from there I started reading NTT era Dick & Donna, and I just fell in love with their friendship. And now, I can turn to this fic as proof I still got it whenever I doubt my abilities as a writer c:

Fave moment:

Dick glanced at her, eyebrows raised. "She ran out on you?"

"No, no, we never really... I don't think it counts as running away if it never led to anything more."

"But you wanted it to be more." Dick paused, taking in Donna's silence, which would've fooled anyone else but him. "You still want it."

"I-- yeah." Donna sighed and held her hands up as if to say you caught me. "I'm... Sorry? For stealing your girl?"

Dick laughed, bemused. "She was never mine. She knew what she wanted, what she needed - and I wasn't in the right place to give her that."

"And you? You think I'm what she needs?"

"Better you than me. You're Donna Troy. Older, smarter, prettier..."

Donna gave him a deadpan stare.

"... And you know who you want to be. She likes that in a partner. I'm still figuring that one out for myself." Dick stretched his arms up and then leaned back into his seat, lacing his fingers behind his head as he stared up into the ceiling.

04 // When I'm down on my knees, you're how I pray

I’m including this one just to showcase I got the range, babey. And honestly, the fact that I was able to write this fic and actually receive positive reviews for it was a surprise to me too!! This was the first time I ever attempted to write a real darkfic with dead dove subject matters, and I managed to nail the emotional manipulation, somehow ;__; It was a real learning experience too, learnt so much about Catholicism just to write about Dick’s guilt issues in an AU setting nobody asked for 🤡

Fave moment: (dead dove warnings apply)

"Not at all, Richard," Roman said. The boy would come to him, eventually. "Now, it's getting late. If that's all, I'll have Jason fetch your room keys. Seven Hail Mary's before bed, and think about everything we've just discussed. Tomorrow we'll do a proper debriefing."

"I... Okay." For a moment, Dick sounded like he had more to say. Instead, Roman heard a muffled sniffle, one that Dick likely tried to disguise with a hand over his mouth. Silly boy.

"Thank you again, Father," Dick said, after a beat.

"All in a day's work, my child." Roman unlatched the door and stepped out of the booth. He nodded at Dick as the younger man ambled out of the booth after him. "Goodnight now, Richard."

As he set off for the living quarters, Dick called out. "Wait!"

Roman turned around, inclining his head.

"Will you stay?" The candlelight chased shadows away from Dick's face, and for one glorious moment, Roman could see the depth of the desperation shining in Dick's blue eyes.

"Guide me through my prayers. Please."

Roman smiled.

05 // 2020 Jason Todd Birthday edit

I said Robin Jason deserves better and I meant it! 👏👏 This edit took me 12 hours and 67 layers ‘cause I made a mistake on like my 8th hour into the editing process o__o but it ended up being my most popular serious graphic edit, so it was worth it. I guess!

What Students Teach- mt_reade, 4,000 words.

Hello! My name is Thomas Sanders, and I just finished my first year as a teacher.

I taught a grade one class this year, at a relatively small school. I’ve known that I wanted to be a teacher since I was young, and babysat for the first time. I just love kids so much, and I remembered how much my teachers had an influence on me growing up. I wanted to be able to do that for others. I’ve known for a long time that teaching is the right job for me.

But, what I didn’t know, is that the teaching goes both ways, and the lessons that my students have taught me this year are more valuable than any of the things that I taught them. I’m writing this now to share with anyone who reads this, just precious few of the things that my students teach me.

(I came across this recently but I just love how simple and sweet this idea is! I love how they characterised all the sides in the perspective of children, especially Remus. I feel like it would be easy to write as absolutely ridiculous but he feels still realistic while still being very much Remus!).

Virgil doesn't get to meet his soulmates each night. No, he has nightmares. His roommate decides to stage an intervention.

(I just love this take on the soulmate idea of meeting up in your dreams. I also like that it was no one’s true fault. It would’ve been easy to say that it was all Deceit’s and Remus’ fault for being terrifying but it’s more nuanced than that! There’s not a lot of shippy-ness but it’s still a soulmate au so there we go!)

Local shark mer Roman finds a tiny mermaid tangled up in a net in his territory, and enlists his siren friend Patton's help to find a way to free the little guy. Unfortunately for Logan, they end up 'borrowing' a human to assist them in untangling the net. Virgil just wants to get out of this nightmare of a situation.

(Maybe I’m just a sucker for merpeople aus, but this is such a good story immediately. Instantly engaging and I’m keeping an eye on it for any new updates. I may also just be a sucker for misunderstandings which is the main conflict so far haha!)

Centaur AU- KieraElieson, unfinished, 10,000 words

Thomas is hired as a centaur groom very abruptly, and is just a little bit lost, but trying his best.

However, when you think of centaurs more as people with animal-like bodies, and everyone else thinks of them as animals with human-like bodies, disagreements are bound to come up.

(So far it’s pretty much setting up the context and characters but it’s done so effectively! The trauma of the characters is handled so well, hinted at and clearly effecting their behaviour, but not so obvious that you immediately know what’s happened to them. Despite being tagged as ambiguous time period, you don’t even really question when the story is set! It quickly grabs your attention and you focus on the story more than any tiny ambiguous details.)

No Longer Alone- Amydiddle, 3,000 words

Anxiety has been living in the basement of Thomas' mind space for almost two years now. A place were all the host's darkness resides. The small side has learned how to take care of himself and how to avoid the sides whenever he goes upstairs.

Tonight's midnight food run goes a bit differently.

(I am so weak for stories about how all the sides formed and first interacted! I think I just fell in love with this concept! Simple but such an interesting fun read!)

The Worst Thing in the World- Arwriter, 6,000 words

Everyone knows Virgil needs to be handled a little differently. He might not like it, but that’s the way it is, and living with the light sides won’t change that. After all, it’s common sense.

Right?

(The first part in a slowly expanding series, the entire series is sooo good so if you like this one then definitely continue reading! It’s such a well written look into their lives, how they handle conflicts and grief. I love Virgil angst where the others get a look into his previous life, no matter how small and sad that look is.)

Roman loves to read bedtime stories to his kids (even if Virgil says he’s grown out of them), but soon Patton and Virgil discover that the story book their dad has been reading to them is actually a portal to the very kingdom they’ve been told about- not only that, but their dad is the prince!

What else will they find as they venture deeper into this new world they’ve found themselves in, and what other, much darker secrets are being kept from them?

(SUCH A CREATIVE IDEA! I love how the plot always kept me guessing but never in a way that felt cheap or misplaced. Characters were introduced and you were left piecing it all together to figure out if they were trustworthy, which is what the main characters are also doing! Will always recommend)

Caught Red Handed- Wholesomereader, 20,000 words

Virgil doesn't like his dad, runs away, and 'accidentally' steals from a local bakery.

Then, the owner of said bakery hires him.

He's in so much shit.

(I love how this is paced and written out. There’s a lot of themes and relationships being built but it still feels easy to keep track of everything and nothing feels swept to the side or neglected.)

Slither Into Your Heart- Jungle321jungle, 6,000 words, unfinished, Anxceit

Deceit didn’t bother to knock as he slammed the door open and glared down to where Remus sat on his bed polishing his morning star. 

“What did you do?” Deceit hissed. 

Remus gave him a large smile as he looked him up or down, “Do you have the snakes just up there or are they down below too?”

If asked by Patton later, Deceit most definitely did not try to strangle the other side in that moment. Not all.

Deceit is turned into a Gorgon.  And the new annoying little snakes on his head seem to have an annoying obsession with Virgil.

(Amazing idea, amazing writing, sweet scenes and just! It’s just a nice read! I love how they write Deceit to be this cool tough persona but also named all his new snakes!)

Wings of Anxiety- ShadeCrawler, 7,000 words

Virgil normally kept his wings pressed tight against his back. He never let them out to stretch when he was outside his room. Yes, they got sore after a little while and yes, it rustled his feathers to the point that it took forever to groom them.

But, he couldn’t take them out. He just couldn’t. Dark Sides didn’t have wings. Only Light Sides did.

(Love me some Virgil angst, add in some wings and I’m in! I also love this idea that Virgil was supposed to be a light side all along but circumstances weren’t as fair. Strong self hatred to make a compelling story! Just yes!)

This isn’t what I wanted, but I’ll take it- Simpleton_Cat, 17,000 words, unfinished.

Thomas didn't think he would ever get pets, much less a cat. But here he was, having four cats, Logan, Patton, Roman, and Remus. And then Remus (God, please exorcise the demon that is most definitely in his cat body) brings home two more and then suddenly he's back at the Vet.

Or in other words: Everyone is a cat and Thomas is their owner.

(Again, such a cool idea! I love how this new context for the characters allow for so many new ideas and characterisations. I love Deceit and Virgil’s relationship and how that has shaped, especially how Deceit’s link to lying is written!)

Changing Tides- LadyoftheWoods, 6,000 words.

Virgil ends up overboard of his father's boat during a storm, and expects to drown in the sea. Instead he is rescued by merpeople, in more ways than one.

(Virgil angst plus merpeople- well hello! I love the slowly forming family relationship between the characters. I also love how Virgil reacts to finding out merpeople exist, feels genuine but not too drawn out.)

A Fanciful Dream- AceDetective, 20,000 words, Prinxiety 

Virgil could say with certainty that he was no prince. Found by King Thomas’ chef, lost and with no memory of who he was, Virgil spent his childhood running errands in the halls of the castle. When a young King visits and claims Virgil is his brother, Virgil must determine if this is truth or a young King’s hopeful dream.

(While this is very fast paced, everything feels justified and well explained. The confusion between both Virgil and his brother feels so genuine and well written. The quiet slow reaching out makes sense for the both of them!)

When Roman Prince learns that Patton Foster isn’t allowed to date until his older brother, Virgil, is, Roman is crushed. Roman’s twin brother Remus, however, comes up with a plan: find someone who is willing to date Virgil.

And who better to ask than Janus Verona, who according to rumours is willing to do anything for the right price?

(This is one where I kept a close eye to see if it updates, while a silly idea, it’s so well  written! I love how Deceit is written as slowly caring and falling in love while still maintaining his persona, just like Virgil! I also love how Virgil is characterised as his usual anxious self but a bit more persona based like before accepting anxiety)

You Can Picani Family You Want- DramaticGarbage, 20,000 words, Analogical, Royality.

Emile finds himself in charge of two small boys who need somewhere to go. It’s going to be a learning curve for everyone.

(If you love found family stuff then this is it! It’s a series of oneshots about different parts in their lives but I love the themes and how the characters progress through each moment. It’s so sweet and rewarding. Plus it has big boi Roman which is always a plus!)

Fatherly Sides- Bright_Sea, 60,000 words, Moceit

There are good and bad days when it comes to being a father. Deceit and Patton learn all about it while raising their four boys.

(Similar to the one above, lots of found family sweet moments all connected by the larger plots and themes. The angst of the larger plot is given the seriousness and gravity that it deserves. I love how trauma is talked about and dealt with in a healthy manner. Everything feels so genuine and realistic!)

Colors- Badgermole, 49,000 words (21 works), Logicality.

A collection of stories where Logan is a young Virgil's dad. Virgil happens to be autistic and has a fascination with colors. Unless otherwise stated: Virgil is aged around early elementary school age with Roman 2 years older.

(Again, with the sweet family moments with minimal angst! I don’t have autism so I can't say whether it’s realistic or not but it’s very well written and covers a lot of autistic themes and everyday life. Actually, read pretty much everything by badgermole as their writing is so good and they tackle a lot of disabled issues!)

“People like us,” Logan had once remarked to Virgil. “Are statistical anomalies.”

(Almost)  Everyone in the world has powers.  As for those who don’t, well, they’re such a small part of the population - only 0.04% - why would anyone care about them?

Ever since he realized what people mean when they call him Powerless, Virgil Sanders has tried to fight back against the system that oppresses people like him, Patton, and Logan.  When Patton’s bakery is targeted in a hate crime, he finally snaps.  With the help of a mysterious sponsor, Virgil becomes a villain, ready to remake a broken society.  The only thing standing in his way is the world’s most Powerful (and infuriatingly charming) superhero: The Prince, who is hiding the fact that his gilded life isn’t as perfect as it may seem.

(So well written! While fast paced, everything feels so well balanced. Main characters and their plots balanced with new OCs that don’t feel too much and justified in being there. The plot kept me guessing while still feeling justified and interesting.)

No matter your age, punishments are no fun. Despite being no fun, would you be willing to do anything to avoid said punishment?

(I don't know what it is about this piece but it's just sooo good! I’ve reread it so many times, it just won’t leave my mind! I love how it’s carefully written where we don’t quite exactly know what the misunderstanding is until it’s stated out loud for all the characters. Maybe I just have a weakness for Virgil angst and misunderstandings but so worth a read!)

Snow Day- RandomSlasher, 8,000 words

Every year, the sides go to Roman’s realm and spend a few days enjoying the snow. Well…most of the sides. Set pre-Accepting Anxiety.

(SOOOO GOOD! The found family is so well written. Actually, while this is the only mention of Random Slasher because I don’t want this to be too long, read everything and anything by Random Slasher. So well written with some amazing ideas.)

Looking for the Light- OreoButter, 30,000 words

Remus, Deceit and Virgil Dark are Brothers. They had an awful home and now are in the foster system. After being passed from family to family they finally end up with Thomas. Remus is gross, Deceit is a compulsive lier and Virgil has crippling anxiety. Virgil will do anything to protect his brothers, at any cost. The family of three will have to face trial and the truth as they search for the light.

(I absolutely love found family if you couldn’t guess already! But I love how they wrote the sibling relationship between the dark sides, feels so genuine and justified. There is shipping but it feels more like a side plot so!)

Virgil is blind. It's not a big deal though, right? But he hides it, because if the other sides knew they would push him away again. And besides, he's pretty good at faking being sighted...

And the other sides are also more observant than he realizes.

(Again, this is another fic that I keep returning to! Also, I’m not blind or have any partial sight so I can't so whether this is realistic but the conflict and comfort feels so genuine and justified.)

(I know text fics can be a little hit or miss but the chemistry feels so real and fun. The characters are still very much themselves, a lot of text fics can feel out of character. I also adore the fact that Virgil is mute so the fic has a reason for why the group chat is used despite them all meeting in person. So good, will always recommend!)

In Which Jo Loves Content Creators

I’m in a mushy mood. This means it’s time to snipe people with my love for their work and affection for them as people. (People I don’t know that well/talk to regularly won’t be as personal as people as I’ve made good friends with! All to avoid making anyone uncomfortable <3)

I’m going to start with @sleepless-in-starbucks, because of course I’m starting with Lia. I know I’ve made a literal collaboration post with Max about how much I love them and their work, but Also how can I not mention once again how sweet and funny they are? I vowed that one day, I would rick roll them, they don’t believe I can, but I will, one day. Also they’re really good at comforting people??? And let me scream about some of my favorite fics/tropes to them. I also really enjoy talking to them about stuff I’m working. Listen. Lia is great, okay?

Speaking of @max-is-tired did you know they’re an incredibly sweet datemate who’s super considerate and easy to talk to and gosh I love them a whole lot? Not to mention their writing and ideas are phenomenal!!!! Max is so big brained!!!!! I will never stop expressing my love for them ever.

Oh, oh, oh!!!! @thechildoflightning is also really super sweet!! I became a huge fan of their writing through their daemon prinxiety au!! And my love of their work just kept expanding as I read the jksf verse they’ve worked so hard on! Their research is expansive!! And did you know they’re really cute when they info dump? I asked them to tell me about the bird facts the other day because I wanted to hear their info dumping and it was really cool information!!! I learned a lot about a really cool bird!!

Another segue! You know who else I’ve learned a lot from? @lilfellasblog who is so cool? And kind???? And smart? Sometimes, I’ll ask them questions in a joking way and then I’ll end up learning something and wow! That’s so cool! And they don’t mind simplifying things for me when I ask! And their fic, Healing Broken Wings? An actual masterpiece, though if you check it out I recommend reading tags thoroughly. And if you have questions about a tag, ask them! They’re so willing to elaborate to make sure you’re able to stay safe!!! They care more about your safety than your readership!!!!! And that’s so awesome! I love Lil so much! A great friend and an amazing writer!

A friend I don’t really talk to nearly as much as the others but who I still care about a whole lot is @illogicallyinclined. They say they can’t write, but bullet fics are a Valid Form of Writing, and also their art? Stunning? They’re the reason I started appreciating Logan a whole lot more than I used to, and their hockey au  is really good (and Jam Packed with Logan Angst if you’re into that.) They’re also hilarious to talk to. I have chatted about Virgil and Logan being huge ass meme’s with them on multiple occasions.

Someone I’ve only recently started talking to is @sign-from-god-complex who’s actually really cool? I was talking to him about my love for fandom content creators before I decided to make this post and of course I had to include him? I’m literally going to be bingeing his writing as soon as I finish this Love and Appreciation post because it’s amazing! I can’t believe I haven’t read more of his work before! A travesty, honestly!!! And oh my God his music is good? Literally the whole reason I joined his server and started talking to Lo in the first place was because he was really nice when I asked him how downloading music worked because I’ve only ever done that onto an MP3 (I know, I’m old) and even then I had to have help because I’m not adept with technology. A great singer and writer!

Now for people I’ve never talked to personally but really want to show my appreciation for... Goodness, there’s so many?

I’m gonna start this section with @princeanxious who’s writing, art, and ideas in general are amazing? Have you seen his coma au? Heart wrenching. His Lost Guardian au? Beautiful world building! His punk lo/pastel dee au? Adorable oh my goodness I can’t get enough!! I tried to talk to him once, but I kind of got scared I was bothering him, but he seems really nice!!!!

Did I mention soulmate au’s earlier? I did. You know who writes really cool and great soulmate aus? @not-so-innocent-bi-sander and MAN is their writing great! Have you read their vampire soulmate au? That was so cute??? I loved Logan’s internal conflict with changing Patton and Roman, gosh? And they have such interesting au ideas too? Like I have actually never heard the concept of Lockets before, and it was such a fascinating idea for a soulmate au? I mean, obviously they have other fics that aren’t soulmate aus, like their prinxiety fic Overcoming a Legacy? Stunning, I am pretty sure I stayed up really late reading that one.

Speaking of fics that made me stay up late (so many segue’s) @impatentpending ‘s fic Powerless had me up from 5:30 pm when I started reading it to 2:30 am when Max finally woke up and distracted me long enough to make me shower and go to bed cause I had work in the morning. Do I regret it? No. Powerless is a stunning fic with an amazing concept. I can’t tell you how excited I was to read a fic where Virgil willingly took on a villain role to protect his loved ones. And also I’m going to physically fight Missy, she can catch these hands. I can’t really give much else on the rest of her fics, because I tend to avoid anything that might not end happy (I’m five chapters away from finishing Powerless, and I’m only just now getting skeptical they might not get their happy ending so count me scared) but I have no doubt everything she’s written is just as good, if not better since this fic was finished in 2018? Wow.

Another fic that had me up super late was @lovelylogans gilmore girls au where you lead, i will follow. Don’t be fooled by the eleven chapters, that fic is over 100k words but God is it so worth it to read every single one. You don’t even need to be familiar with the show the au is based on, it’s amazing either way. The characters, the plot, the romance, all absolutely stunning. I will personally fight Patton’s mom. And the rest of her fics! Wow!!! Stunning, amazing, wonderful, beautiful, I’m running out of adjectives. I loved their princess bride bullet fic a whole lot, that was fun.

If you ever see me gushing about mermaid aus, please know that @voidsides au is Probably my favorite take on it. The prinxiety! The sassy virgil!!! The Logan being so done with Roman’s shit. Literally the one comic with Logan interaction I could practically see “Roman I swear to god if you don’t stop flirting with the fish I’m going to push you into the water” in his words. He didn’t say it, but man he was definitely thinking it.

Oh man, I can’t forget to mention the person who got me into g/t-slash-borrower sides @infinimay cause his content? Amazing, really. I found him when someone I follow reblogged one of his halloween fics and I fell in love and proceeded to binge the rest of their writing. Amazing, really. I really love the giant hermit virgil and hiker logan ones a lot. There’s more that I definitely love a whole lot as well, but I can’t currently match content with titles right now and if I go through I’ll get caught up and forget to come back to this post, but just know I love

Another giant/tiny writer I really love who I fell in love because of his amazingly written alien au- @delimeful WIBAR is currently one of my fic obsessions and I might reread it soon because it’s so good? I love the world building and how he’s written the characters so much. The rest of his work is Also Great? The fic where Virgil turns into a dragon when stressed? Amazing I can’t wait for it to continue.

@tulipscomeinallsortsofcolors You got me so in love with laoft I think about it often. Scary Virgil?? Changeling Logan???? Witch Roman???? Gifted Patton????? I want to cry I love them so much. And God, May! May Gage is a disaster of a woman but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t love her. I just. I love this au so much and it’s gotten me to love fae lore so much like I used to. I want to reread this au now, crap. Wait I need to read Lo’s stuff first. Double crap.

Oh man. speaking of writer’s who keep bringing up fae and reminding me how much I love them, @lefaystrent I hope you know your parental shenanigans on my dash bring me life. I didn’t know carbonated milk existed until last night. Kind of wish I was still ignorant on that particular topic. Either way, your fae virgil fic? Amazing. I got so super excited every time I saw an update, and that epilogue? A beautiful ending, if you ask me.

@stillebesat I start screaming in excitement, reading your Interview fic. When I found it, I became so in love with the fic I had a really hard time reading anything else and I frequently checked your blog looking for an update. I am so in love with it, and honestly there’s lots of questions I have about it but if I ask all of them this post will be even LONGER and it’s so massive already.

@today-only-happens-once You’re writing is amazing. So many of your fics are so stunning?? I fell in love reading The Only Exception. Still need to go through your masterlist thoroughly, but man everything I’ve read from you so far is so well written and takes my entire heart.

This post wouldn’t be complete without @notalwaysthevillian who actually got me to start shipping Logince with her fic Shattering Stereotypes. And then there’s of course her tangled prinxiety au??? Which I actually really gotta finish but what I’ve read of it? Amazing. 

Oh crap. If void has my favorite artistic mermaid au, @teacupfulofstarshine has my favorite written au. LDAD is a stunning fic and I would die for it. And also her recent atla au fic? I was screaming over it. Also also her moxiety dad au series she did for halloween had my entire heart. Every installment of that series had me so incredibly soft I probably could have cried.

And finally, @randomslasher I really love your writing. Your fic, Starved was one of the first I read in the fandom and I adored every single word. I haven’t actually had the chance to really sit down and binge any of your work that I could find, but I plan on fixing that soon. It’s also?? Really nice to see an older fander! As someone in their twenties and constantly seeing how young everyone is, it’s comforting knowing I’m not the only one!

That’s everyone I wasn’t scared of bothering! Everyone who I wanted to shower in my love for their work (and affection for the people I talk to!) This isn’t really in any particular order, beyond me separating the people I talk to from the people I don’t. This post is massive, but I hope everyone enjoys my appreciation for their content!

Fics Written This Year:

I’ve written (and posted) 6 fics this year, all of them for The Penumbra Podcast. Shoutout for TPP for getting me to start writing fic after around a year of not writing anything aayyyy. I’ve also got several WIPs (still for TPP) that I’m currently working on and a Word doc with a list of fic ideas

Takeaways from your kick-ass writing, or kick-ass lack of writing, during a year more focused on survival than perhaps any other:

I finished listening to TPP just before quarantine began and I have written almost 100k of Penumbra fanfiction since then. Not all of it has been published yet, but writing fic was a very good distraction from me stressing about my Master’s exam and has continued to be a good distraction during the stress of quarantine. I’m also just so, so pleased to be writing again bc I didn’t for almost a year and I forgot how happy it makes me. 

Most surprising fic you wrote this year:

Probably sink me in the river at dawn, because I’ve talked big game about doing MerMay before but never done it, and then I spat out 7k of mermaid!Juno fic in literally 24 hours. It’s still wild to me in hindsight. 

How you grew as a writer this year:

Hmm. I think I’ve gotten better at staying on track with my writing this year. I’m bad about starting WIPs and not finishing them, but I’ve managed to write fics all the way through this year, and I’ve managed to write longer one shots than I usually do. And -- it’s not necessarily growing as a writer, but I’ve been using Scrivener more, which has made it easier for me to edit fics once they’re done and also keep my fics organized which is potentially aiding me in my writing. 

What’s coming in 2021:

Fics in my WIP pile! I’m most excited about come and meet me in the sky, which is a multi-chapter sequel to one of my previous fics and I can’t wait to start posting it. I’m also very excited about my TPP Big Bang fic! As far as fics I’m working on, I’m currently focused on writing come and meet me in the sky, my Valentine’s exchange fic, and low-key the TPP Stardust AU. Once those are finished and posted (or if I hit another wall in the Stardust AU), I’m going to be plotting out some fics for the desert adoption au and/or working on Bad Things Happen Bingo prompts.

Ao3 Wrapped 2020!

I was tagged by @lynne-monstr to talk about my writing stats for this year, thank you! Okay so! 

Total word count for 2020 was 391,455 which is...uhhh...a lot and like...a huge percentage of my total word count for the entirety of my time on Ao3 so I’m actually really pleased about this because...wowo look at that productivity! Next year is 100% not going to measure up but the productivity this year! The number might go up a little depending on my SS fic and if I get anything else out before the year ends. 

Top by word count: 

So I have two fics that top this list which would be my Sanders Side fic “Broken birds of a feather flock together” and my Untamed fic “The river brings you home” but I’m excluding them from this list because they were started last year or the year before (I swear they’re not abandoned)  so excluding those, here are my top five!

1)  Show me how you fly at 30,222 words, this was for the QZGS Big Bang event and spiraled wildly out of control via word count as I was really expecting 10k at most. Mostly an excuse for wingfic and also stabbing both the characters and anyone who had to read this! Fun fact about this fic: There are about 3-4 spin off fics bouncing around in my head that I might possibly get to. 2)  See the arch to my back, the desire in my eyes clocking in at 16,260 this was entirely self indulgent and completely because I thought that it would be really great to have Yu Wenzhou as someone who was into pole sports and obviously bring in Huang Shaotian to panic over that. Fun fact about this fic: I completely blame the TKAA discord for enabling me.  3)  Lost and Found clocking in at 14,074, another event fic, this one written for the Young Justice Big Bang! Essentially me rejoining an old fandom of mine for a little while and it was a really nice reminder of how much I loved the series when I was younger so it was a fun blast from the past! <---that’s the fun fact. 4)  Come home to her this drops the word count to below 10k words at 9,699, uhhh this fic was completely borne from the TKAA discord essentially going: wouldn’t this be very painful but also heartwarming at the same time and my brain was like: you’re right! Fun fact about this fic: It Is Really Due An Update And I Will Get On That At Some Point. 5)  HST noisy mermaid YWZ long suffering guy who just wants to sketch but HST is flirting rounding out the list with 8,474 words, as you can see, I coped out on the title and used the sentence I used to keep everything straight in my “Actually Started” folder. Fun fact about this fic: this was actually my first foray into FSQ/WJX and then I tripped over a rock mae put in my way and I fell into the pit so congrats to mae I guess.

Top fics by kudos Again, I’m excluding the two mentioned above due to them being up since before 2020 I write too slowly I’m sorry  1)  Open affection this was a gift for tea and unsurprisingly a HWQ/YX fic as tea helps summon the hanye demon. 2)  I like this jacket. It's mine now. another hanye fic and another gift for tea (can you see that this doesn’t actually top the list of my favourite couples?) 3)  Night hunt gone sappy a modern Untamed AU based on artsy-alice’s AU, check out her art and fics for this AU of hers, they’re all Fantastic. 4)  Arts and crafts are hard, stick to Glory another hanye fic, this was actually my first attempt at the ship, again due to bait but I got some gorgeous art out of it so I guess I won in the end. 5)  How Yu Wenzhou's professionalism got ruined yes finally a yuhuang fic okay so this wasn’t my first yuhuang but it remains one of my favourites literally because I think the image of YWZ with streaks of bright rainbow hair is absolutely hilarious and honestly I think that’s entirely valid.

Hanye topping the list here which isn’t really a shock considering how many love them and I am unsurprised that one of my Untamed fics made the list considering the size of the fandom but yuhuang still managed to eke out a place in the top five and I’m very proud of them for that, well done! 

If I had to sum up this year...nyoom writing with droughts inbetween!

Hello! I loved your werewolf AU (and the final reveal and how WWX is like, damn LZ why couldn’t you be a fae, I’m poor and now I have to pay up to JC). I loved that like everyone seems to be some magical creature except WWX and he’s just rolling with it lol. Do you ever plan on continuing it? Pretty please?

Hi~! I’m glad you liked the werewolf AU!! I wanted to add something more lighthearted as a continuation of the original post since @thewickling is doing a FANTASTIC job writing an angstier version of it on her blog (tagged as winding moonrise, if you want to check it out!) 

I hate to disappoint, but it’s likely that I won’t write more of it. I’m actually not much of a writer?? I seriously lack the focus and general skill required to write proper fic. (I almost wrote something adjacent to what me and thewickling had started in lan sizhui’s POV but eh, it didn’t go anywhere)

If i think up of a scene in the lighthearted mermaid ‘verse, i may scribble something out but like...i’m not actively planning anything for it.

But, bc i feel bad about it, i’ll tell you a couple of details that i had come up with when writing the mermaid version of it:

Wwx’s dad was a merman. His mom was fully human. Wwx takes after his mother and didn’t inherit any mer traits from his father (except he can hold his breath longer underwater than most humans can). Madam Yu is not a fan of mingling with humans, so when her husband showed up with a very human child in tow, she was furious. Wwx is the reason why the Jiang clan more or less became a bigger presence in the human world. Lotus Pier had always existed as their “land post” but they didn’t live there permanently until wwx came around. 

Also, the merfolk can sprout spines that are sharp and venomous and wwx is SUPER JEALOUS that he doesn’t have any of that. Jiang Cheng lords it over him all the time. Also also, merfolk can change from human form to their natural fishy form at will but if they’re startled, they will sprout their spines. It’s embarrassing and it’s something wwx uses to get back at jc. It was all fun and games until jc accidentally poisoned him that one time (wwx was hiding so he could scare jc but then he got startled by a dog and ran to jc who was then startled when wwx barreled into him in fear--nobody had a good time that day)

So yeah!

Tang Yi x Shao Fei AU Headcanons

So these came to me in the shower, as all good things usually do, and I thought I should just put them out in the world. I might write fics based on these, but if anyone wants to take a shot, by all means please do and tag me after so that I can read it! Does anyone know their couple name? @florbexter please advise :D

Vampire x Werewolf!AU

Tang Yi is a Werewolf lord in charge of a faction of shifters in a highly charged situation in a city of different beings, and Shao Fei is the Vampire enforcer who is obsessed with Tang Yi. Things happen and Shao Fei saves Tang Yi from a group of killers sent by a rival faction who accidentally imprints on him. (Oh no! :>>>)

Single Father!AU

Tang Yi is a single father out of his depths at the appearance of a son he never knew he had and Shao Fei is the neighbour (yes this is also a Neighbour!AU) who has had a crush on him for the longest time. Tang Yi’s son keeps escaping to Shao Fei’s because Shao Fei has sweets and a game console. Cue shenanigans.

Coffee Shop!AU

Shao Fei has a crush on the well dressed stranger who comes to his coffee shop for a cup of tea at three in the afternoon every Monday. And one day the stranger writes the name ‘Tang Yi’ on a napkin and Shao Fei is like ?? and he is all, “Just in case you need something to call me by” ;D

Assassins!AU

Tang Yi is looking for the assassin codenamed ‘Trap’ and his search leads him to Shao Fei - a clumsy, klutzy man who is the absolute antithesis of the reputation that precedes that name. Tang Yi ingratiates himself into Shao Fei’s life, eventually realising that he might have had it wrong and planning to move on when an old enemy comes for him. And that’s when Shao Fei reveals himself  and curbstomps them like a BAMF.

Bad First Meeting!AU

Shao Fei accidentally elbows Tang Yi in the face while waiting on his blind date. Who happens to be Tang Yi.

Kid!AU

Tang Yi and Shao Fei are waiting on their parents at the principal’s office as they both were fighting in the playground during play time. There was a miscommunication and Shao Fei had thought Tang Yi was bullying Zhao Zi. There is sullen silences and angry looks before Tang Yi sees Shao Fei holding his arm awkwardly and asks him if he would like an Iron Man plaster, to which Shao Fei replies that he likes Captain America better, and Tang Yi tells him that he can be have that and whether Shao Fei knows that Tony Stark and Steve Rogers are best friends, to which he answers that he does. By the time their parents arrive, they’re both busy making their Avenger figurines fight Hydra agents on the office floor.

Mermaid!AU

Tang Yi is a Prince travelling back to his kingdom to be married to a Princess of his father’s choosing but his ship is stuck in a storm, and Shao Fei is the Merman who rescues him. Shao Fei is immediately fascinated by the sleeping Tang Yi, but knowing that he cannot reveal his kind to humans, makes to leave Tang Yi on the beach only to be captured by the King’s men as they think that he has killed Tang Yi.
