Hi, I’m a newer game dev (at least I’m tryin to be one lol) and I’ve realized that I have a really hard time finishing projects, because I just get burnt out and lose any passion I had for it. Do you have any advice?

Here's how I've (sort of) navigated these issues:

- Make small games. This was originally my "starting out" advice for people, but as time has gone on I genuinely think this is the only practical method for indie development. When I say small, I mean SMALL. I don't mean "oh, make an 8 hour game with hidden levels and side quests," I mean "your game is, at most, a single hour long, preferably 30 minutes." I've seen enough indies overscope their work and get stuck for nearly a decade without a finished product because they wanted to replicate the scope of a game made by several people with millions of dollars. You can definitely attempt larger projects down the line, but for the most part smaller games are what give you consistent growth as a creative, a reliable audience, and if you monetize them on steam or itch.io - an income. It's also a great opportunity to explore experimental design/art without risks, which is always valuable.

- Regardless of the game's scope, you need to take multi-day-long breaks if you're experiencing burnout. Game development is a cerebral discipline and it will tire you out fast. Forcing yourself through burnout might squeeze out more results, but you're just amplifying burnout down the line. Recognize that the breaks are a natural extension of the process and don't wreck yourself trying to be "more" than that. Hell, even painters sometimes need a bit of space from their work before they can continue, why would it be any different here?

- Don't get hung up on the game not coming out like you thought it would. If you become frustrated because the game doesn't reflect your ambitions, it's easy to lose interest and want to move on from it. Games will almost never resemble the initial vision. Sometimes you have to avoid being a perfectionist and accept your game for what it is.

- Find community (if you can). Surrounding yourself with other developers can be a great motivator for your own work, and being able to tap into a larger pool for second opinions and assistance can help you break barriers that otherwise would've stopped your work.

- Take your time. Game development is slow, and learning the various disciplines inside of it is a lengthy process. It took me 8 years to do the stuff I do today. Granted you might have an easier time if you're older than I was when I started, but in general it will take years to get to a point where you feel confident.

- Try a different engine from time to time. Most modern engines are fairly well suited for independent game development, but the available resources surrounding the engine (such as documentation and community support) can vary wildly. I strongly recommend window shopping across several engines. There's a small chance that you're having a hard time because the engine you're currently using isn't well suited to you and your goals. Some recommendations based on the ones I've personally tried:

* Game Maker Studio 2 - Great general purpose engine for 2D game development. Has a great community and plenty of learning resources. It's also fairly user friendly. It does have a license cost if you want to monetize your games, so keep that in mind. Scripting is done with GML, which is very human-readable.

* Godot - One of the best open source 2D/3D game engines. Doesn't have all the features of its competitors, but it's rapidly evolving and what's already there is more than enough to make most games. It's also compatible with various programming languages! Also, being open source means that it's completely free of licensing costs.

* Unreal Engine - Freakishly powerful 3D game engine at the cutting edge for modern game development. The C++ scripting might be fairly tough to work with as a newcomer (especially since it's built around a special wrapper for the engine that changes some of the rules), but it does have a well supported visual scripting backend that could do you some good. 2D games are certainly possible in Unreal, but it's clear that's not what the engine is intended for. Also Unreal has a neat licensing policy where you don't have to pay them unless you make more than +$1M, so that's cool.

* Unity - This is the one I use. It's great for 2D and 3D, and has a rapidly evolving feature set. It's one of the few engines with a swappable rendering pipeline system, which lets you pick the fidelity to work with relative to your game: With HDRP you can work on high-end games, and URP is great for doing everything else. Like Unreal you can initially monetize your games for free, but you have to pay a monthly subscription once you cross +$100k. Also you have to pay a monthly subscription to get rid of the splash screen which kind of sucks. Other than that, it's a very robust engine with possibly the largest community of the engines listed here.

The San Francisco tech scene is completely beyond satire. I'm in a discord server for game developers based in SF because even though I don't live in the bay area anymore it's still the closest hub for indie developers near me. I went to one of their meetups once, the talk itself was completely useless and I left about 30 mins in, but I did get two people to playtest my demo beforehand so it was still worthwhile. One of those things where you're in a sea of 50 people who annoy you and are able to find maybe one or two people who are cool to talk to.

Conversation on Digital Art History (Claire Bishop // 'Against Digital Art History' and participatory art + Johanna Drucker // Art writer on themes including digital art aesthetics)

Johanna Drucker: "As you know, I have stated repeatedly that I don’t think digital methods have defined a critical breakthrough in any way that is comparable to the impact of theoretical formulations like feminism, deconstruction, postcolonial, queer, or critical race theory. I guess I also don’t think it has to do that, and the expectation ought to shift. That said, I think that the idea that a new method has to produce immediate results that are staggeringly distinct is ungrounded. Why? To justify its existence? Is novelty the hallmark of good scholarship? Even on those grounds, to dismiss an entire field on the basis of a few bad examples seems as irresponsible as my senior male colleagues telling me in the 1980s that no good scholarship could come of looking at bad art (e.g., work by women).

You can resist digital work by saying it has no intellectual excitement, or you can do the work of understanding its intellectual contribution. Very few scholars get excited about metadata and information infrastructure, but that, in fact, is where much of the intellectual benefit lies. Again, the dependence of every scholar, teacher, researcher, and student I know on the repositories made by digital projects shows their value and their integral role in our work and practices. Within the community of information professionals, this work is anything but “depoliticized and uncritical”: the debates on the politics of classification, the inherent social and cultural biases in all systems of information production and management, permeate the field. (I can supply references here in preservation, archives, classification, digital access, user analysis, bibliography, and pretty much every aspect of information studies. The fact that digital humanists are often ignorant of this field is an effect of academic silos, but also, frankly, a classist dismissal of “librarians” as secondary citizens within the university system, an offensive and prevalent practice. One of my major complaints about digital humanities is that it ignored the library professions expertise as if it were mere service work and technical, rather than deeply ethical in its outlook and principles.)

Quantitative methods are problematic in the humanities if they substitute for other engagements, but also, more profoundly, as I have also said repeatedly, if an absolute cultural authority accrues to them. Quantitative methods have just as much possibility for ethical guidelines as qualitative ones, but keeping the ethical issues visible throughout the lifecycle of data production is a real challenge. But the real issue that troubles me (dismissive resistance is simply silly), is this quick slippage: “quantitative computational analysis reduces works of art/ literature/ music/ theatre to metrics; one of the hallmarks of neoliberal economics is also the reduction of goods and services to metrics, on the basis of which performance and profit can be assessed and monetized.” This suggests that DH is somehow more complicit with this condition than other practices and even causally responsible for it. This is patently false. It also suggests that a “pure” humanities exists that is untainted: the humanities of work that embraces social good and the highest virtues of humankind without complicity in the institutional frameworks that support it.

Let’s see, was that in the first medieval universities, founded by the Church? No ideological complicity there, right? Or in the seventeenth-century academies, founded to control knowledge and professionalize it, criminalizing other scholarship (Richelieu’s intention)? Or in the growth of Enlightenment thought, a philosophically altruistic movement, concerned with the same pure motives that allowed the justification of colonial expansion, slavery, the exploitation of natural and human resources, systematic genocide, and other positive humanistic contributions all codified in treatises and historical studies? Or the long-standing British humanistic study that allowed the empire to identify with classical Greece and Rome and thus legitimate its political practices through study of the rhetoric and history of the past? Or the nineteenth-century universities that trained clerics, lawyers, and medical men and dosed them with a bit of poetry in keeping with an Arnoldian notion that “the best that has been thought and said,” or the early twentieth century in which the entrepreneurial spirit of American democracy creates a new international system of trade and so learned men, men of sophistication and class, ought to be able to cite their classical and romantic poets, their Shakespeare and their Milton, alongside a bit of Paine, Jefferson, and Lincoln? The American research universities, the kind of environment that supports Richard Grusin so he can write media criticism, was developed in the post–World War II period on the strength of the GI Bill (which poured money into the higher education system) and enormous research grants from the military-industrial complex. Did the humanities departments that lived off this economic stream imagine they were somehow absolved of responsibility— like the family eating dinner in the plantation and uttering righteous platitudes about Christian piety? I had a friend who was a dean of an art school and raising money for various projects, and her students said they only wanted her to take money from “good” corporations, not bad ones— as if the entire system of creating surplus capital from exploitation of labor were not a problem. Really, I think the idea that digital humanities is the devil here is a convenient way to ignore the big and complex picture— that we are all complicit, that the humanities have served as a part of the system they critique, that they survive on account of that political and economic reality, and that the moral superiority of cultural critics is intellectually suspect and ethically unfounded. In short, I disagree that DH has justified the neoliberalization of the university.

It also carries with it the idea that the digital humanities sucked all the money out of humanities institutions. Because there was so much money going into them? It is true that the NEH and Mellon, among others, engaged digital projects because they saw benefits at scale— access, preservation, and use— which, in fact, as per my earlier statement, is true if you consider the integration of these resources into daily use. As to the exploitation of labor issue, that is another chestnut to take apart. I pay all of my students and always have, as do most of the people working on these projects in the university. Do you think that learning how to do digital work and being paid to do it so that the humanities can thrive in a networked environment is a negative thing? I don’t. And I think giving students skills for work is also positive. Having always had to make a living— as a waitress, typist, print shop worker— I am glad to have had skills that let me survive. That said, the myths that people carry around with regard to digital technology are equally frustrating archival— or that it is somehow ecological. Why don’t we address the ecological costs of all digital technology?"

Notes: I excluded Claire Bishops' writing in this conversation primarily because for the most part, it reads as more 'resistant' than informative on the topic of digital humanities / art history. I think that Drucker writes well on including digital history and analysis in pedagogical settings as an applicable contemporary skill/vocabulary. This whole conversation hasn't introduced much new content to me, nor really defined the 'Digital Humanities' in depth, however, it does solidify my perspective that this area of research is excessively important to me and something that I would like to explore more. I find it difficult to wrap my head around how exactly to portray these research areas in my active work, but these readings are foundational and in some ways, almost like reverse-engineered explanations as to why I feel passionate about digital art, and why my work revolves around this digital-spatial arena at the moment.

My darling beautiful girl,

It’s almost Christmas. The stone-cold air has been filling my lungs every morning in my daily walks to the gym. I’ve fallen in love with that moment, the quietness around me, the first rays of sunshine appearing in the hills, a magical white coat around the fields. It’s something to be cherished.

I’ve been heavy on the tea section, a small gift from a friend has contributed to the increase of the number of teas I’ve been having. She gave me my very first pot of white tea, it’s vanilla extract and herbs. Delicious. Nights have been calm, at home, under the blankets and with my favorite books. I’m growing into a big fan of homemade distractions; painting is also a main activity that has been filling my time. It’s funny, I realize now that people do ‘paint whatever it is it goes in their hearts’. My paintings are nothing compared to Rembrandts or Monet, but it’s curious as to why I pain flowers so much. In a recent poem I heard I discovered a new perspective on flowers: the way they can translate different emotions. To me, flowers have always represented love, it was so obvious for so long that I never even questioned that for some people flowers represent pain, grief and sadness. I’m still a fan, don’t get me wrong, but I it has changed the way I look at them.

I’m losing track, as always! I wonder the types of conversations we’ll have… oh boy.

I over-love by nature, I’m an oxytocin, dopamine and serotonin addict, the levels have been through the roof when I’m around him and it’s turning my rational side into an idiot with the IQ of a bacteria! (Simple organisms have the lowest IQ’s – I checked).

It makes even less sense since I know he’s not in the same place I am, he’s very poise and calm. Oh, how I hate the way his smile speaks more than his eyes. I’m not used to reading someone like this. I’m lost baby.

Anyway, I guess I need to be patient and wait for the best – Yey me. I’m stuck in an open fire field with a water gun as support and the enemy is firing a fucking bazooka.
