I will admit announcing the calling being gone on Reddit is the funniest thing that could have actually happened
#.bullshit ( ooc )#This popped into my brain as I’m about to unleash the evil but like using Reddit as your sounding board for this is like#Sending the town crier in when the lot is already angry and on fire#It’s okay to like it being gone#I just think their relationship with their supplemental material is weak and will be getting weaker here on in#I love the missing but datv also looked over some neve and Harding development there to do their own datv thing which is fine#But why kill one source piece and uses the rest I digress#King yap had to go and yes I get it but they love to pick and choose

Missing 411 guy?
David Paulides, the guy who is the creator of "Missing 411" which is basically a conspiracy about suspicious clusters of people going missing in National Parks in the United States. He is also the bane of my existence for the past year as someone who is researching a story about someone who goes missing in a National Forest.
To start with, if you've ever been even on the fringes of "irl spooky stuff" videos on YouTube, you might have encountered this. There are a lot of youtubers and podcasters who cover this guy's content without understanding What and Who they are giving platform to. Sometimes, people don't even mention him but will relate the cases that he covers in his books or use the same conspiracy points as him. I would not be suprised if you watched a Buzzfeed Unsolved/Watcher video (which are fine btw) and then got recommended something related to Missing 411 in the sidebar since it's a similar genre. It's super popular to the point where its outgrown its creator. I can't stress enough that many of you have probably encountered this content, at least in passing, without knowing what it was.
So to recap, Missing 411 documents cases of real-life people who have disappeared or been found dead in national parks, national forests, etc and claims that these cases are unusual and mysterious. It frequently talks about missing person "clusters" and things like that. There is often an overt, if not outrightly stated, implication that something supernatural, crpytid, or UFO/alien related was involved. For starters, David Paulides has written a ton of books trying to prove the existence of bigfoot. Now, I have no issues with people believing in bigfoot, or cryptids, or aliens, but I do have an issue with people co-opting real life tragedies and twisting information to push this as conspiracy. I simply do not think it is helpful or respectful to talk about missing and dead people (and children!) like this. Also, with the high prices of his books ($100-200) he just reeks of grifter to me.
To me, Missing 411 "criteria" is a stretch at best. You will see cases "mysteriously" connected because both of these people wore red when they went missing. Both these people's bodies were found near water (as if many National Park do not have water features.) Both these people's bodies were found near granite rocks (like, the most common rock type in mountains lol.) All these cases involve the weather turning bad! (um, yeah, that's a big reason why people get in trouble?) He frequently claims that bodies being undressed is highly unusual, without ever acknowledging paradoxical undressing. Or he claims laughably weak connections between people like "these two women who went missing in different years are connected because they both had three letter names that started with A." I haven't personally listened to this talk but there is a data scientist mentioned in his Wikipedia page who examined the case data and found nothing out of the ordinary in them. If you don't want to watch a video (I don't either right now) then he also wrote this article. From a different person, this article from a podcast is also good.
David Paulides does not present Missing 411 cases with accuracy. He has been known to cherry-pick data and purposefully omit data to make them seem more unusual. Many cases he covers are either already solved, or have extensive information available. He does not retract information or admit when he is wrong. Even if he does present a particular case accurately, he has such a bad track record with reliable research that he cannot be trusted as a source. There used to be someone on reddit who would deconstruct cases he covered. In this post they found several instances of cases of Paulides missing sources and coming to incorrect conclusions.
Note there's a few differences in the sources I just linked. The data scientist and podcast skeptic both said they found the data to be accurate, while the redditors have found evidence to the contrary. The data scientist also says he found Paulides' presentation of information respectful, but I personally find all of this highly disrespectful. But despite these differences I think we can all agree....the claims of Missing 411 are pretty ridiculous.
Also, let's talk about David Paulides himself. Before becoming a writer, he was a cop in California. He was a cop who was fired for corruption (well that's hard to do), because he was caught soliciting donations for a fake charity he set up. That's straight from his Wikipedia page. He continues to use his past as a "dectective" to attempt to make his claims sound more reliable. There was also a redditor who pulled up some other career highlights from when he was a cop in the 80s, by looking at court transcripts and news articles. His job used to be entrap gay men by pretending to be gay, getting them to invite him home with them, and then arresting then. He and his unit were also accused of police brutality many times in the 80s, with Paulides testifying in defense of his unit. And he has not changed btw, he's a Qanon stolen election covid denier type of nut right now on his YouTube channel (according to reddit. I am not watching this man's videos.) So yeah, I think his character speaks for itself.
Anyway, I'm tired of hearing about this guy and seeing 411 related content pop up around YouTube, Reddit, Tiktok, etc. Pay attention if you watch things related to "creepy and unexplained real life disappearnaces." I do not think he is a good person, I do not think he can be trusted, and I do not think that his work actually benefits the families of the missing persons in question. These are real people. He turns them into spectacles to push ~unusual~ circumstances and paranormal activity.
#helppp can u tell i hate this dude#i have formed a deep abiding dislike of him after being subjected to his content#near constantly while working on my au#DO YOU KNOW HOW HARD IT IS TO RESEARCH MISSING PERSONS CASES IN NATIONAL FORESTS???#AND GETTING LEGIT RESULTS THAT DON'T MENTION MISSING 411??? I SEE HIM LIKE EVERY GOOGLE SEARCH#i have literally had to scrap information from sources because i consider mentioning missing 411 and david paulides#as an instant negative on a site's credibility for research#i started doing research on certain parts of my fic by writing -missing 411 in the search bar to exclude results mentioning it#quara asks#also i recognize that using reddit posts and podcast episodes to 'debunk' things this guy says is not necessarily a reliable source either#but it's not like something relatively niche like this is going to get some Big Official Takedown.#it's gonna be the redditors that dig into it#anyway you can tell that even in his official subreddit people are starting to hate him#whereas i first encountered missing 411 back in 2019 and people were into it hook line and sinker#but now even among his fans there's much more distrust

I wish it was still normal to re-cast roles. Yeah, it’s weird at first but audiences can get used to it. Productions should be able to recast actors who quit or get fired. We can handle it.
This is about two things.
#Yellowjackets: an actress quit and ruined out plans so we had to rewrite on the fly!#recast her! yeah it’s weird for a second but if the new actor is good enough everyone gets used to it#I’m not sure that would have actually saved it but I can see the gaps where I think they rewrote things to fix her#and in their panic just ended up making an absolute mess#and the expanse: this is where I reveal I’ve known a big show spoiler the whole time#saw it really early on Reddit lol specifically someone lamenting that they went the kill off route#and I agree with them now finishing Persepolis rising#if they ever come back to do the final trilogy it will be sorely missing Alex#I for one will be sad because both we’ll miss the alex&bobbie moments and the alex&naomi moments#your actor turned out to be a dick? fire him! get a new one#this could also be about the mcu I guess but that’s a whole other can of worms#that I don’t really care about anymore and I’m not sure anything could have saved#even sticking with their original kang plan

I was going to save this until I reread Hollowpox, but that last ask reminded me that I should share this here, so I present:
Musings on Maud: Why is she considered so powerful, how does this affect her dynamic with Squall, and why is he so scared of her?
(Bonus: How can I connect it to Silverborn?)
Two disclaimers: I haven't reread Hollowpox in ages, so if there's anything that could prove or disprove stuff in this post, send it my way. Honestly send any discussion my way. I love discussing theories. Second, this was originally a reply to a Reddit comment on a post, to which you can find here. The comment discussed Maud being a signatory for a Squall safeguard, so since this comment is copied verbatim, it references that.
---
If it’s not outright stated, it’s at least heavily implied that Squall helped create/build up the Republic. It’s only existed for about 90 years, and Squall has been exiled for about 100. He mentions in Hollowpox how he knows that Maud’s plan is to take over Nevermoor/The Free State, because the Republic took over the other states in the realm and he “helped them do it.” However, unless Maud is immortal and also 100 years old, she is not the one who started the Republic from the side of the Republic. Also, no clue how long it’s been around, but Squall Industries has likely been around for awhile as well (this is how he gets his connections and power in the Republic), with Squall just constantly grandfathering himself in with the vampire trick or something.
Interestingly, Squall says two things in this scene (Chapter 34 of Hollowpox) that stick out to me:
“I made the so-called Hollowpox,” he raised his voice above hers, “because I was asked to. Because I was compensated handsomely for it. And because when the most powerful person in the realm asks for a favour, even I don’t refuse.
And
“But you’re a Wundersmith.” Morrigan was utterly baffled. “Why can’t you just stop them if they’re such a problem? I don’t understand!” “Do you THINK I HAVEN’T—“ Squall shouted, then cut himself off abruptly.
He also mentions how the Hollowpox was initially meant for the Republic, but Maud snuck in an infected otter across the border into Nevermoor— “That was never part of our deal.”
There’s definitely a business relationship between the two of them of likely consistent deals, one favor for another, quid pro quo. However, we also see that Squall can’t really go against her, something he seems to have tried before. Two chapters before this scene (Chapter 32), has this moment:
“Yes, shush. Maud said the Wintersea Party might help if there was a squid crow po.” “Quid pro quo?” “Right, one of those. She said they won’t do something for nothing, but if we could convince Prime Minister Steed to meet with her, just to have a conversation, then she would try to convince her party to share their cure.”
While it could be easily explained as part of her job, Maud seems to get most of her power and do things by extracting deals from other people. Maybe she’s knackless, or maybe she has some sort of connection to Puppeteering or a knack related to that. Not Mesmerism, but something that allows her to be persuasive, manipulative, convince people of things, and get them to do what she wants. A sort of parallel or companion to Squall’s connection with Puppeteering that we see in Wundersmith.
It’s interesting that when we first meet Maud, there is this exchange directly after she tells Mog that the Wintersea Republic would only agree to help the Free State if there was some sort of deal:
“But they’re your party,” Morrigan pointed out. “Aren’t you the one with the power? Maud stiffened slightly and cast her a wary, calculating look.
And then soon later she says this:
“Even if I could persuade my party to do the right thing – and I’m not saying I won’t try – there’s no guarantee Steed and his government would come to the table.”
The whole exchange seems very manipulative, like, “oh, I’d LOVE to talk and get this figured out, but I can’t…” There’s a big focus on conversation. Maud is wary when Mog mentions power— she thinks she means a magical power, something secret that gives her an advantage, when really she just means politically— so I wonder if she was worried for a moment that Mog realized she had some sort of coercive power.
I wonder what exactly her power is that makes Squall so scared of her, and why it possibly makes it so that he can’t fight make and overthrow her. Aside from their business relationship, which allows Squall access to Wunder and being a Wundersmith, there’s this other layer as well.
As for safeguard: I don’t know if Maud would be a signatory for a Squall safeguard, as that seems to just be for Wunsoc students, but I think that whatever their deal is and whatever her power is allows her to keep him in check. Jess said that we will learn more about safeguards in Silverborn, and I think it would be interesting if Mog learns more about them from Squall instead of Jupiter— and maybe it does end up being similar to whatever he has going on with Maud, who knows! I don’t really have any safeguard theories myself, but I will keep an eye out for what you add to your comment.
A Silverborn “silver” side note: A “silver tongue” means that someone is persuasive when they speak….. perhaps this idea, theme, power, etc. will be expanded upon in the future 🤔
#nevermoor#nevermoor theory#hollowpox#president wintersea#ezra squall#maud lowry#whatever their deal is it prob involves squall's access to wunder#anyways. enjoy folks! would love to know people's thoughts on this lol#difference between reddit and tumblr in allowing you to do new lines or not in indentations is so funny to me lol#hollowpox is so crazy bc the chapters in the 3rd act are like BAM BAM BAM so much important stuff happening and being revealed#'jam why do you use so many quotes' bc I am insane and like to have sources#but also when you spent months putting 1016! quotes into a quotebot you develop a decently specific memory for a lot of this stuff lolll#anyways turns out somehow I had the chapter numbers TOTALLY WRONG so had to go back and fix them lol. how did that happen.#this theory wasn't noticed on reddit. tough crowd. so hope some folks here appreciate it lol#real question is 'why is Maud + Mog so similar and is there a reason for this. and is this related to Mog saying Maud reminds her of a mom.#might develop it more once 1. i'm no longer in a heat wave that's frying my brain and 2. after I reread. bc might be hints I'm missing idk

Anton should have been with Zavulon for real. He should have been remoralized maybe. Start with The Night Watch, then see what an asshole Gesser really is, see that Zavulon is right, actually, and start working with Zavulon.
I mean, yeah, I ship them, and Anton's marriage with Svetlana doesn't work, but at least Zavulon seems to be shameless about the things he does? While Gesser does shit that the dark ones would do and pretends like he didn't do it.
I have more respect for Zavulon than for Gesser. If you work for the light, work for the light. Not just pretend that you're one of the 'good' guess.
I mean, in Story 2 of The Twilight Watch, Anton already goes, "I'm gonna leave the night watch" and his relationship with Svetlana is changed forever. And it's only going to get worse. So Anton leaving all of that to become Zavulon's loyal guard dog or to start working for inquisition? That would've been way more interesting.
