headcanons ⸝⸝ hey everyone! ive been on a writing streak as of recent, so i love to give more headcanons and ideas about dating megumi! ofc, this is from a fem perspective.

safe for work headcanons

+ megumi literally did not think much of you when you first met. it was only seeing how you interact with others that he started to get you more.

+ whenever he sees you typing in the group chat, he always makes sure he answers (of course, only to make sure youre heard, much to itadori and kagisakis interest)

+ probably won't call you, but texting is decently fun with him. for someone decently calm and quiet, hes curious about how you work, ect.

+ he enjoys sharing his earbuds with you, and you lend him a few songs to listen too (you seem to get his style, although he likes a much of different things, and he saves them to his playlists)

+ doesnt mind staying back to help you train or study, and honestly you two end up talking about the jujustu world and everyone in general

+ he doesn't seem like he cares about gossip, but the moment you start talking about it he is going to pay attention

+ you two always swap what you don't like on food

+ brushing his hair with your fingers will make him fall asleep.

+ you two always somehow crowd around each other when others are training or at parties or events

+ he does not suck at communicating, he just does it in his own way. maybe in notes or through text, he is very sensitive in reality

+ would absolutely ignore his friends if you two had a date or even just taking a walk. if someone has his attention, he will give all of it

+ he loves to print out the pictures he takes of you on his recyclable camera and keep them in a little drawer in his desk

Birthday Special(JJK Oneshot)

Decided to write something because today is my birthday(May 3rd)! And I'm officially 21! Thank you all for you love and support for the past 7 months of me writing for JJK! Also, this is the Valentine's day I referred to.

“Papa, you’re thinking too hard about this. You know Mama doesn’t ask for much.”

“Yeah, Dad. It shouldn’t be hard to get mom a present. Remember that full-size green tea hand and body lotion you got her? She was way too happy about it and was on the verge of crying happy tears.”

Toji sighs as his kids are behind him trying to ease his stress. Once again, like Valentine’s day, he was struggling to get a present for you. But this time, the stakes are higher because today is your birthday. Not some holiday Toji remembers because it’s one of the many times of the year capitalism does a complete take over for the sake of consumerism, which he can never avoid every time he goes out.

Though his kids have a point, he always wanted to do or get something for you. While you do the occasional mall shopping, it wasn’t often. Maybe once a month if lucky. This always posses a problem for the three because you were the best gifter in the family. Knowing what to give to anyone but only hinting at minute items. Thus having to think outside of the box or really watch your eyes latch onto anything longer than seven seconds. 

Megumi and Tsumiki don’t blame Toji for struggling since your demands weren’t demands but rather promises. You have been nothing but good to Toji for almost two decades. Something Toji knows many people take something like that for granted. Unfortunately, becomes terrifying to know how easily many fall under a dark spell. And Toji fears himself on certain days for not giving what you deserved.

“I know, Megumi. But your mother deserves nice things for herself. She still wears the necklace I gave her when you two were young. That’s almost ten years. Now, you both do some scooping while watching the time. We have to get the cake at 3:45pm.”

The siblings looked at each other before shaking their heads in helping their father’s hunt for a perfect present. They looked around the vast sea of stores to give themselves for any ideas. They were overthinking this whole process because every idea was shot down at the reality that you did have everything you ever wanted.

You have everything you ever wanted is what you always said to them.

Perhaps there’s something else they can give you that reminds of that. The lightbulb above Tsumiki’s head went off as she asked Toji the jewelry store he got the necklace from. He becomes curious as she scans the windows for something until stopping and pointing. Toji and Megumi look over to a display of multiple charm bracelets. 

“If Mama has the necklace with us in it, why can’t she get a matching bracelet to go along with it? She doesn’t have one that does.”

Now, Toji and Megumi were seeing Tsumiki’s vision.

“Good eye, kiddo. Shame on me for not thinking about that sooner.”

Toji lets Tsumiki handle the bracelet creation, occasionally having him and Megumi to be on the same page. Once finalized, Toji goes to fish his wallet for his card to give to Tsumiki to pay. After printing the receipt, the lady gives the card back but it ends up dropping onto the marble counter. Megumi cringes at the metallic clanging it made so he grabs it for Tsumiki to give back to his dad. Everyone in the store glances over at them as Toji puts the card away. Megumi raises a brow at his father because Toji had a smirk plastered on his lips.

“Why are you smirking?”

Toji pockets his hands as he looks at him.

“Don’t worry about it, Megs. Just know there aren't a lot of people with metal credit cards. Anyway, we gotta get movin’ because we need to pick up your Mama’s birthday cake and food for dinner.”

Tsumiki joins them as they head off to finish birthday shopping. Once getting home, they set up everything for you to come home to. By the time you come home, they’re done. Making your presence known, you relax into your humble abode. You walked yourself into the kitchen to see what your family has set up for you.

“Happy Birthday, Mom!”

You're greeted by a hug from each of your kids. Chuckling at the surprise they always seem to do when the day is about you. You hold them close and kiss their foreheads as their hugs re-energize you. Once parting, they made way for their father as your husband stands over you. Holding that dumb grin that you fell in love with over these years.

“Happy Birthday, Doll~.”

Giving a forehead kiss of his own, he holds you ever so softly but with the affectionate firmness. You giggled at how Toji is when it comes to physical touch. He can’t seem to get enough of it. Before eating dinner, you wanted to blow out the candles so they could eat the cake afterwards. The kids say their part and end with “We love you, Mom. Always.” Toji cracks a joke that always makes Megumi roll his eyes before getting into his own sentimental speech.

“Thank you for spending almost 20 years of your life with me. Happy Birthday, (Y/N).”

Ugh, and that softness he had at the end. Made you want to kiss him with all the love and warmth. You thought it’s time to eat dinner when Toji pulls out a small pink bag and places it in front of you. Surprised, you looked around at your family.

“What’s this, guys?”

“It’s for you, Mama. From us.”

Though curious, you smiled as you looked into the bag and pulled out a small box. Upon opening it, you couldn’t stop the smile that took over. There, in the box, was a silver charm snake chain bracelet with a small (F/C) gem at the center of a beautiful silver heart charm. But that’s not make you smile. It came from when your eyes landed on the other three charms attached to the bracelet. Two of those were dangling charms, one of an elegant flower and the other of a small silver puppy. The other charm was a clip-on with the colors of dark blue and black. You recognized them to represent the three that ultimately fulfilled the word “family” for you. 

The flower is Tsumiki as it was her favorite color, the puppy was obviously Megumi, and the last one is Toji for sure. Your smile began to painfully pull at your lips because you realized Toji’s charm closely resembles his wedding ring. Clasping the bracelet on your wrist, you admired how it looked on you.

“It was the kids’ idea to do this. I just paid for it, Hon.”

You knew Toji’s lying but didn't have it in you to call him out. This gift was just too perfect. You go over to give your motherly affection to thank Megumi and Tsumiki, your two children that gave meaning to your motherhood. Once having enough, you go over to Toji. The man you undoubtedly cherish and completely devote yourself to, your husband and your other half. You hug Toji lovingly, taking in his warmth and presence. Nothing in this world brings you comfort and ease than the man you choose to love never made you regret giving your heart and soul to.

Toji just chuckles with his signature grin, returning the hug with the same amount of affection. Yet your children can see the adoration and tenderness in his eyes, knowing full well he never looked at anyone that way because you’re the only one to bring it out of him. Looking up at your Toji, your gaze softens but your smile still holds its homeyness. He stares down at you before he leans in for a kiss you gladly accept. Even Megumi smiles with his sister while watching their parents express their love for one another, seeing them pull away from the kiss.

“They’re truly your kids since they always knew how to give me gifts. It goes with my necklace now. Thank you for this.” Saying as you smile up at him.

“Ah~, they knew because they have  good eyes. Just like their mama. Happy Birthday, (Y/N). Thank you for your love…and thank you for being you.”

The absolute tender affirmation was unlike any other. Though your birthday was a reminder of how many years you’ve been on here, it also serves as a reminder of your milestones over the years. Looking at your life, you got the best out of it. A family of your own and the love from someone who’s been with you through it all. As you tell Megumi and Tsumiki to go ahead and eat, you lock eyes with Toji. Both filled with a love no one can feel except the two of you. Toji hugs you close from behind as you interlace your hands into his, feeling your bracelet pressed up against him. Gazing upon Megumi and Tsumiki, both of your creations born out of each other’s unmatched love for one another.

This will be added into one of your many best birthdays you had.

“It’s so stupid."

You mumbled under your breath.

It was your 19th birthday party, and here you were. Sat alone on the steps leading up to your house. Previous tear marks stained your face as you watched the still sky.

It was dark now, and the climax of the party was just arriving.

However, you couldn’t bring yourself to walk back in. All day, no one had even said happy birthday. Yet, everyone had come over to have a party for your birthday.

In the dark, a car pulled up to your driveway.

The familiar black BMW parked smoothly, its lights catching your eye.

As the door opened, a smile grazed your face.

Silently, you made eye contact. The feeling was humbling - your best friend (and crush) of 10 years seeing you pathetically alone at your own party.

“Hey Megs.” You smiled the best you could as he took a seat next to you, placing his gift aside.

“Hey.”

“Why are you out here?” He questioned, looking at the constellations of stars. You turned to him, his eyes reflecting the elegance of the sky.

“I..” You swallowed your words, taking interest in the solid colour of your shoes.

His gentle gaze switched over to you. “I don’t even know Megs.” You whispered, leaning your head on his shoulder.

“I thought I would have fun, because, well, not to be obnoxious, but it’s my birthday!” You sniffed, “And everyone’s been treating me like crap, and-"

A small velvet box was placed in front of you.

“And no one had gotten you a present or said happy birthday?” He asked, you could hear the amusement in his voice.

“And no one had gotten me a present or said happy birthday..” You muttered, confused, raising your head off his shoulder.

"How- how did you..?”

He shrugged, a small grin teasing his pink lips.

“happy birthday.”

You breathed out a relieved laugh, slowly untying the blue satin ribbon around the box.

A giddy smile laced over your lips, looking over to Megumi for reassurance before opening it.

“Go ahead, it’s your birthday.” He chuckled, subtly excited for your reaction.

Slowly, you lifted the box open.

“Megumi..” You smiled, holding up the necklace in the moonlight. “Didn’t I say I want my future boyfriend to buy me this?” You flustered, playfully glaring at Megumi.

His grin softens. “sorry.”

You faked a huff of annoyance as you examined the necklace that has never failed to capture your attention.

“Can you?” You held the necklace in front of Megumi, pulling your hair apart and allowing Megumi tie the clasp.

“I love it.” You beamed.

He smiled contentedly as you gushed over the twinkle of the gem in the middle.

“Wanna get out of here?”

You scoffed jokingly, “And where to? The ice cream parlor down the street?”

“If that’s what you want.” He stood up, extending a hand for you to take. Gratefully, you took his hand.

“Can we?” You whispered.

“Of course."

Since I have been feeling a particularly strong attachment to my comfort item lately here are what I think PJO character's comfort items would be (short answers in bold text for those who want a quick read):

Percy: a blue stuffie from his childhood. He doesn't often have it with him but he always feels safer when he is with it. And yes, he probably calls the stuffie "he" because I said so

Grover: a little mushroom pendant from Juniper. He never puts it on anything, just keeps it in his pocket and takes it out to fidget with when he's stressed. It has a really smooth surface and pretty colours so it's a good sensory thing for him.

Annabeth: her camp necklace. She always has it and when she doesn't she feels bare. Every time she's stressed she looks at a bead and thinks of a good memory from that year.

Thalia: a shirt she particularly favours because she wore it a lot when on the run with Luke and Annabeth. Any time she's in a bad mood she wears it and it makes her feel a bit better.

Nico: canonically, it's his skull ring, but I also feel like he'd have a childhood blanket that he's really attached to. It's a really soft fabric and so he always uses it when he's feeling overstimulated or understimulated cause it works for both

Rachel: a scrunchie with a fall leaf pattern on it from Percy. It was the first birthday present he gave her. It was all he could find and afford to get her that he thought she might like and he was scared she'd be underwhelmed but she really appreciated that he went through the effort and now she always has it on her.

Leo: a rock he found on a beach field trip with Piper back at the Wilderness school. It's pink and translucent, so when he holds it up to the sun it lights up a bit. It reminds him that he's cared about and loved when he has an existential crisis about being the 7th wheel.

Piper: a rock matching Leo's, found on the same trip. It's grey and smooth with streaks of white and green. It was a big source of comfort for her when mourning Jason, and she was able to remind herself that there was someone out there who shared her pain.

Jason: a silver bracelet Thalia gave him with a lightning bolt charm. It's the only jewelry he wears and he always has it with him, even when he dies.

Hazel: a small keychain from Frank. It's a little bear holding a plastic gemstone heart. She always brings it with her on quests and outings, making sure never to lose it.

Frank: a purple and gold friendship bracelet Hazel made him when he became praetor. He always treasured it because it made him feel like he'd made someone proud, despite the fact he'd already made so many people proud.

Reyna: her praetor's cloak. She didn't think she'd form an attachment to it, but she really liked the fabric and it made her feel important and safe. After she gave it up, Thalia noticed her seeming sad without it and got her a new one, but silver and gold embroidered with the symbol of Bellona.

Will: a pressed flower from Nico. Nico started picking flowers to press when he was unhappy as a way to learn how to keep his powers under control when his emotions are strong. He gave Will the first one and Will was so honoured he decided to carry it everywhere with him.

Apollo/Lester: a new ukulele Will got him after he lost his old one. Like Percy, he doesn't usually have it, but playing it always calms him down and reminds him of the people he loves.

Meg: a chip of a terracotta pot from her childhood home (I forget what it's called). She found it before she and her dad left and decided to keep it as a keepsake.

Lavinia: her star of David pendant, canonically, but I'd imagine she also has a music box with a little ballerina that reminds her of childhood and makes her feel safe.

Okay because i put my thoughts in the tags the first time heres some of my spn au thoughts

Also disclaimer i am changing the supernatural story so dont get mad at me for not including things or changing things you like this is my house and i write the au <3

Characters: Dean -> Mav, Cas -> Ice, Sam -> Slider, John Winchester-> Duke Mitchell, Mary Winchester -> Slider’s mom (her name is also Mary in my Slider lore so), Bobby -> Viper, Ash -> Goose, Ellen -> Carole, Jo -> Bradley (he’s like a teen in this but don’t worry theres no Jo and Dean content 🤮 thats his godson) 

-slider and mav aren’t actually related, they were both 6 (mav older by a few months) when their parents got married, duke was a widower and mary was never married 

-Getting this out of the way although i love the chevy impala i am a truck freak so mav drives his dads black 1990 toyota sr5 with an extended cab 

Backstory: -viper and duke were both navy pilots now “hunting buddies”, they took mav and slider out hunting occasionally but whenever they went on long “hunting trips” they left slider and mav at home, that’s because these hunting trips were monster hunting trips

-the same thing that happens to sam and deans mom happens to mav and sliders mom but when they’re both around the age of 10, since they’re older and not stupid they have a lot of questions that duke can’t just bullshit answers to so he tells them about monsters and what he thinks took their mom (because he doesn’t actually know at this point)

-since they no longer have a house they stay at vipers or go on the road with duke 

-once they both start high school slider wants to stop hunting and stay with viper to focus on school, his relationship with duke gets weird after that because duke wants him to keep hunting to find what killed his mom but slider wants to do well in school to make his mom proud, they come to an agreement where slider stays with viper but once a month he has to come hunting

-slider leaves for university (idk what hes studying), mav graduates but stays with duke, he starts hunting on his own 

Now time: -This au starts in 2005 like the show

-duke picks up a lead on the thing that killed mary but is super vague about it when telling viper and doesn’t tell mav anything, he says he’ll be gone for a week but a week and a half later theres no word from him, viper refuses to go after him because “he’s gonna get himself killed” and “ive been telling him to let it go for years” but mav still has to go look for him

-mav finds slider and this basically carries out exactly how it does in the show, he agrees to help for one day, when he gets back his gf is dead, agrees to ditch school 😎 to come help look for duke

story wise thats all i've got so far, i want ice to come into the story a lot sooner than cas does in the show and i dont remember when ash, ellen and jo come in but i want them to come in sooner too. hopefully ill actually work on this more but i hope you guys enjoy

Mav: -has the classic dean necklace given to him by slider

-dresses basically the same as 86 movie mav but with flannel 😎

-does wear his cowboy boots but he’s normally wearing work boots

Slider: -wears his mother’s wedding ring on a necklace, duke gave it to him after she died

-dresses like early season sam, carhartt jacket, hoodies, tshirts and baggy jeans

-silver eyebrow piercing 😎

Ice: -exactly the same as cas but with a dark grey trench coat

-his eyes always glow a little, not enough that its noticeable unless its in the dark

-has a grey hoodie and black jeans for when he needs to look a little less “formal” 

Goose: -has a mullet its a key part of ash’s character so 

-just think mater from cars personified mixed with goose idk

Carole: -dresses exactly like ellen 

-her classic curly meg ryan hair stays tho

bradley: -just a mini goose

Duke and Viper: -they look pretty much the same, just some dad with a mustache and flannel

-only difference is duke always wears his wedding ring

I still have so many of your fics to comment on so please bear with me. You even introduced a whole new character since I last appeared here. I'm sorry for my comments being so sporadic, but I need to tell you that I love Max already. He is so prickly but an absolute baby when it comes to his tummy. (((Maaaaaybe you could get one of Wendy and Bella's friends, Meg or Babs to rub it for him one day, down the line? 👀)))

First the stomach bug from hell and him having no one to pick him up & care for him 🥺

Also, poor thing threw up in front of his class. I can relate to that humiliating experience (not from a teacher's POV though, but still). Not a fun experience, 0/10, would not recommend.

I also loved Vince taking care of him despite thinking he is hangover and figuring out Max is his old bully. Such a sweet guy. Then him having to suffer through Wendy's birthday party right after catching Max's bug. Also, the necklace he got for Wen is so pretty. Good taste, Vin.

And the bus trip after everything?? God, Soup, you killed me with Max  being like 'yeah my gut doing this to me is normal' then suddenly going 'actually no, my tummy hurts, please do something'. Then Vin squeezing his knee and jumping in to help by singing with the kids. So adorable. Loved the little interactions with the individual kids, too. It gave me an idea but I'm gonna send that in a separate ask because it could sorta kinda become a fic request (?) You will see soon.

I actually have a gigantic portfolio of secondary and tertiary characters that are specific for certain OCs (for example Sandra, Chuck and Dean, Leo's coworkers), I think I need to introduce some of them that only live in my head and not the paper!

Favorite painter: I say I love this kind of thing and then I don't pick a favorite. When it comes to figure-based art, I love the well-known classics, Alphonse Mucha (just lush and gorgeous), John William Waterhouse (softly cluttered, often a little unsettled) and Philip de Laszlo (fiery and opalescent). If we're talking animal art, I love the equine illustrations of Wesley Dennis (powerful nostalgia), all the shaggy warm creatures of Rosa Bonheur, and Theophile Steinlen's endless snoozing cats. And then with landscapes, there's John Brett (airy pure blues), Frederic Edwin Church (ethereal), and Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis (otherworldly, surreal).

Favorite poet/writer: That's even harder. Let's focus on just poets because it's narrower. I once heard Emily Dickinson described as terrifying in her spare use of language, and that's always resonated with me -- and it's something I've tried to angle towards in some of my own poetry.

Favorite band: Am realizing I don't connect as much with bands as with solo artists, so while there are lots of individual songs by bands that I like, I don't have a big pool to draw from. I've always liked the Something Real album by Meg & Dia -- very mid-2000s rock with a lot of cluttered lyrics. But I don't know enough about them overall to really say I'm a fan of them.

Favorite meal & drink: My family's macaroni and cheese recipe, which is kind of weird and atypical (it has cheese, but not an actual cheese sauce) but so cheddary and hearty and good. When I was learning to cook, mastering the macaroni and cheese was a big milestone. And then for drinks, a really good hot chocolate. One of our local restaurants has an amazing one with an enormous homemade marshmallow. For stuff in a packet, I love Starbuck's salted caramel version.

Favorite outfit aesthetic/style: I would maybe call it low-key romantic? I wear a lot of skirts, and I typically always put on jewelry when I go out. I like dark colors (though I've been branching into brighter colors and pastels), some light goth and medievaly elements. I like airy flowy lines, but I also want structure and shape. Am a huge fan of boots with skirts. Current favorite outfit is a dark floral corduroy mini over black leggings, black tee, and a long open-knit burgundy sweater. And of course boots. Adding a cameo necklace or pin gives it a little bit of Victoriana.

Favorite singer: Right now, it's a lot of Tori Amos. She has so many good stand-out lines, beautiful melodies, and also just so much music I still haven't even listened to, even after being a fan for well over ten years. Recently discovered her song "The Maids of Elfen-Mere" and may have to check out the album.

Favorite item you own: Hard to pick one. The year I finished writing The Price and Prey of Magic, someone, without knowing what was in the book, got me a pendant with stag antlers for Christmas. Stags are a big motif in the novel, and it felt like such a lovely, special coincidence. The person has since died, and so wearing the necklace is extra meaningful to me now; I wore it for my first book signing.

Favorite perfume: I don't wear perfume regularly. But my favorite scents are fairly straightforward -- vanilla, orange, rosemary and mint -- pretty simple stuff.

Kate's fiancé gets cold feet about marriage and falls in love with another woman in Paris. Kate initially hates Luc, her mustachioed seat partner on the plane to Paris. Together, they concoct a scheme to help Kate win back her ex, and get Luc out of trouble in the process, but she eventually realizes that she no longer loves him. She's actually fallen in love with Luc. There's a classic rush-to-the-airport moment and a love confession when Luc finds out about everything Kate has done for him. He tells her he wants her to stay with him, and they kiss. Happily ever after.

Hey! :) That watch is totally something Meg would love, it's right up her style alley. I honestly am not too familiar with the trove of potential accessories out there in the world that she could possibly wear, but blue is my absolute favorite color on her, so I'm with you on the sapphires!

Diana had a bunch of sapphire jewelry besides her famous ring, but even though not all of it (as far as I'm aware) has yet appeared on Kate in public, I'd sadly assume she probably inherited the whole set. But just for completely delusional fantasy purposes, gawd could you imagine Meg in the Saudi Suite necklace 🤤 (The other one, which is a similar piece set in a pearl choker, is I think more famous, but is also WAY gaudier and something I presume our minimalist girl wouldn't be caught dead in haha. Yes with Haddie going traveling so much they're both master sexters at this point in the relationship. Mikaela is a HUGE tease sending tasteful nudes giving Haddie little "peaks" of her body in suggestive poses and she sends videos occasionally to Haddie as well.

Haddie is a lot more forward with her nudes and doesn't send those cute teasing photos Mikaela sends (not often anyway) They do save each others nudes and such but Haddie for fear of getting robbed or pick pocketed while travelling she will often transfer the videos/pictures to a secret password protected folder on her computer.

Mikaela doesn't wear it very often but she does own some body jewelry that is meant to be "sexy" like those chest necklaces that wrap around the breast as well as the ones that wrap around the chest and hips. She wears it sometimes on special nights usually when Haddie comes home from a long trip Mikaela will be in the bed draped in sheer lingerie and body jewelry. The Lost Story by Meg Shaffer (5/10)

This ARC was a bit of a disappointment. It's heavily dependent on comparisons to other stories, such as fairy tales and The Chronicles of Narnia, which makes it feel a bit too derivative for a published novel. Also this dependence causes the worldbuilding to be lacking, relying on the reader's prior knowledge rather than giving concrete reasons for things. I really liked two of the main characters, Jeremy and Rafe, who have a an interesting dynamic and complicated past. I would have much rathered this book focus solely on them and regaining Rafe's memories since the other main character, Emilie, feels completely unnecessary and most of the plot was so effortlessly dealt with it felt pointless.

Winter Turning by Tui T. Sutherland (9/10)

Another strong installment in this series, I really enjoyed reading from Winter's perspective. Winter is the first main character who shows intense loyalty to his tribe (both the first five and Moon were raised separate from theirs), and Sutherland deals with it well. His development as he comes to care for the other dragonets he travels with is well done, though I do wish he had chosen to go back to them rather than be sort of forced by the circumstances. Also I like the light romance in this arc, mainly because Winter is so horrendously down bad.

Escaping Peril by Tui T. Sutherland (7/10)

Overall, I think this book was great and a bit of a break from convention when it comes to this series. However, I docked its rating for one major reason. I like the decision to follow Peril instead of a Kinkajou book (because Kinkajou is already perfect and therefore wouldn't have much development), and this story wraps up a lot of loose ends from the first arc. However, I think they were trying to emphasize that differences should not be removed for someone to fit in, but I think in Peril's particular situation that doesn't apply. Peril's fire scales are extremely debilitating to her in everyday life; she can't read, she's constantly accidentally setting fires, and even slight contact with anyone else could kill them. So I think the decision to not use the scroll to allow Peril to have a necklace or bracelet that could remove her fire scales as she pleases was a bad one. I know there's a general sentiment to not remove disabilities magically in fantasy books, but regular people do not set others on fire when they touch them; it ultimately comes off as saying Peril should just suffer for the rest of her life.

Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse (7/10)

I think my favorite thing about this book was the intermingling between religion and magic; a lot of fantasy tends to separate the two, even making them antagonistic toward one another, but magic in this world is intrinsically tied to the gods. It creates a plot that while rooted in typical high fantasy has some uniqueness to it. Three out of four of the POV characters were interesting and well-written, and I loved finally getting to read a pre-Columbus Latin American fantasy. Unfortunately, the writing was a bit clunky, and not nearly enough time was devoted to the worldbuilding. I wish there had been much more detail about the history of Meridian; many developments didn't hit as hard because I didn't know enough of the context to understand why it was such a big deal. Also, while I like Naranpa, she doesn't read like a practiced, experienced priest or leader; she's older than all the other POV characters, but the way she's written makes her seem young and naive, which doesn't match up with what we know about her. I did like this book overall, but it wasn't as good as I was hoping.

A Kiss of Salt and Sea by Bliss Devlin (6/10)

This book is a fantasy romance, and it just kind of does what it says on the tin. There's a lot of instalove here, but I did enjoy the romantic relationships despite that. The plot is lacking; I thought maybe it would go a bit farther, but not a lot happens, especially in the latter half. Fantasy romance authors love to make their protagonists miserable before the plot begins, and this book is no exception. However, it did create a much more realistic environment with Jacinthe being in a highly abusive family situation that she does her best to tolerate and then later escape. I also liked the unusual choice to make her a servant at this magical academy, rather than a student. So this book was bit boring, but it wasn't terrible by any means and is definitely a decent wish-fulfillment romance.

The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo (19%)

So far, Luzia is a fun protagonist. She's a bit pathetic, and I think we need more loser female main characters. Let them be a little desperate, stray from being a girlboss every once in a while. As a historical fantasy, I like how rooted the story is in this period. It's not just a backdrop for the plot; the political, social, and religious tensions of the time play important parts in the story.

Talons of Power by Tui T. Sutherland (6%)

I've just barely started this one, but already such an interesting dynamic has been introduced. The antagonist (?) is now incapable of noticing the main character of this book, Turtle, which could be so cool to read about. Also, I feel so bad for him after getting a portion of his backstory.
