He's not my favorite in a normal sense. His crazy fucking lifestyle and death are. He knew Elvis, The Rolling Stones, and many others too. Here's a mini bio on him:
Ingram Cecil Connor III better known professionally as Gram Parsons. He was a musician and frontman. Parsons worked with The Byrds in 1968, before quitting and joining his own band, The Flying Burrito Brothers from 1969 through 1970.
Gram was born in Winter Haven, Florida on November 5th, 1945 to Ingram Cecil Connor Parsons II and Avis Snively Connor. Avis returned to her hometown to give birth to her son. She was the daughter of citrus fruit magnate John A. Snively, who held extensive properties in Winter Haven and in Waycross. Gram's father, Ingram Connor II was a famous World War II flying ace, decorated with the Air Medal, who was present at the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor.
In 1956 when he was only nine-years-old, Gram saw Elvis Presley in concert and fell in love with music. That’s where his love of music came in. Two years later his father who went by “Coon Dog” took his own life two days before Christmas, Gram was only 11/12. Both him and his sister Avis (Jr) were both shattered after their father’s death.
Avis Sr remarried to Robert Parsons and the children took his name and were adopted by him once he married their mother.
Gram Parsons did briefly attend the prestigious Bolles School in Jacksonville, Florida. That was before transferring to the public Winter Haven High School. Which he did after failing his junior year. Gram returned to Bolles which had converted from a military to a liberal arts curriculum amid the incipient Vietnam War.
For a time, the family found a stability of sorts. They were torn apart in early 1965, when Robert had an extramarital affair and Avis' heavy drinking led to her death from cirrhosis on June 5, 1965, the day of Gram's graduation from Bolles.
Barely in his teens, he played in rock and roll cover bands such as the Pacers and the Legends, headlining in clubs owned by his stepfather in the Winter Haven/Polk County area. By the age of 16, he graduated to folk music, and in 1963 he teamed up with his first professional outfit, the Shilohs, in Greenville, South Carolina.
Gram was heavily influenced by The Kingston Trio and The Journeymen. The band played hootenannies, coffee houses and high school auditoriums. Parsons was still enrolled in prep school, he only performed with the group in select engagements. Forays into New York City (where Parsons briefly lived with a female folk singer in a loft on Houston Street)included a performance at Florida's exhibition in the 1964 New York World's Fair and regular appearances at the Café Rafio on Bleecker Street in Greenwich Village in the summer of 1964.
Although John Phillips who is an acquaintance of Shiloh George Wrigley arranged an exploratory meeting with Albert Grossman, the impresario balked at booking the group for a Christmas engagement at The Bitter End when he discovered that the Shilohs were still high school students. Following a recording session at the radio station of Bob Jones University, the group reached a creative impasse amid the emergence of folk rock and dissolved in the spring of 1965 around the time of Gram’s mother’s passing.
Shockingly despite being poor in school and having bad test grades, Gram went to Harvard University in 1966 with the help of a strong essay he wrote. He only did one semester and that’s where he became more serious about country music. He heard Merle Haggard for the first time.
In 1966, he and other musicians from the Boston folk scene formed a group called the “International Submarine Band”. After briefly residing in the Kingsbridge section of the Bronx, they relocated to Los Angeles the following year. Following several lineup changes, the band signed to Lee Hazlewood's LHI Records, where they spent late 1967 recording Safe at Home. The album contains one of Parsons' best-known songs, "Luxury Liner", and an early version of "Do You Know How It Feels", which he revised later in his career. Safe at Home would remain unreleased until mid-1968, by which time the International Submarine Band had broken up.
In that same year Gram got the attention of The Byrds’ guitarist Chris Hillman thanks to business manager Larry Spector as a possible replacement member since David Crosby and Micheal Clarke left in late 1967. Parsons had already met Hillman at a bank in 1967. Gram had his only child, Polly, with Nancy Ross the girlfriend of David Crosby.
Gram passed the audition in February 1968. He was at first a jazz pianist but was switched to rhyme guitar and vocals. Gram left the band when asked why Gram responded with,
"Being with The Byrds confused me a little. I couldn't find my place. I didn't have enough say-so. I really wasn't one of The Byrds. I was originally hired because they wanted a keyboard player. But I had experience being a frontman and that came out immediately. And [Roger McGuinn] being a very perceptive fellow saw that it would help the act, and he started sticking me out front."
He was also friends with The Rolling Stones members Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. And they stayed close to each other until a fall out in the 70s. Before Parsons' departure from The Byrds, he had accompanied the two Rolling Stones to Stonehenge along with McGuinn and Hillman in the English county of Wiltshire.
Immediately after leaving the band, Parsons stayed at Richards' house and the pair developed a close friendship over the next few years, with Parsons reintroducing the guitarist to country music. According to Stones' confidant and close friend of Parsons, Phil Kaufman, the two would sit around for hours playing obscure country records and trading off on various songs with their guitars.
Returning to Los Angeles in 1969, Parsons sought out Hillman, and the two formed The Flying Burrito Brothers with bassist Chris Ethridge and pedal steel player “Sneaky” Pete Kleinow. They did every genre of music possible from hard rock all the way to country and jazz gospel. Around this time of The Flying Burrito Brothers, Gram started dabbling more and more into drugs.
Then Gram started a solo career in 1970 and toured with Emmylou Harris for a bit ; he may have been romantically involved with her as well. He then accompanied the Rolling Stones on their 1971 U.K. tour in the hope of being signed to the newly formed Rolling Stones Records.
Parsons and Keith Richards had mulled the possibility of recording a duo album. Moving into Villa Nellcôte with the guitarist during the sessions for Exile on Main Street that commenced thereafter, Parsons remained in a consistently incapacitated state and frequently quarreled with his girlfriend, aspiring actress Gretchen Burrell who later become his wife.
Eventually, Parsons was asked to leave by Anita Pallenberg, Richards' longtime domestic partner. Decades later, Richards suggested in his memoir that Jagger may have been the impetus for Parsons' departure because Richards was spending so much time playing music with Parsons. Rumors have persisted that he appears somewhere on the legendary album, and while Richards concedes that it is very likely he is among the chorus of singers on "Sweet Virginia", this has never been substantiated. Parsons attempted to rekindle his relationship with the band on their 1972 American tour to no avail.
After leaving the Stones' camp, Parsons married Burrell in 1971 at his stepfather's New Orleans estate. Allegedly, the relationship was far from stable, with Burrell cutting a needy and jealous figure while Parsons quashed her burgeoning film career. Many of the singer's closest associates and friends claim that Parsons was preparing to commence divorce proceedings at the time of his death; the couple had already separated by this point.
In the summer of 1973, Parsons' Topanga Canyon home burned to the ground, the result of a stray cigarette. Nearly all of his possessions were destroyed with the exception of a guitar and a prized Jaguar automobile. The fire proved to be the last straw in the relationship between Burrell and Parsons, who moved into a spare room in Kaufman's house. While not recording, he frequently hung out and jammed with members of New Jersey–based country rockers Quacky Duck and His Barnyard Friends and the proto-punk Jonathan Richman & the Modern Lovers, who were represented by former Byrds manager Eddie Tickner.
Before formally breaking up with Burrell, Parsons already had a woman waiting in the wings. While recording, he saw a photo of a beautiful woman at a friend's home and was instantly smitten. The woman turned out to be Margaret Fisher, a high school sweetheart of the singer from his Waycross, Georgia, days. Like Parsons, Fisher had drifted west and became established in the Bay Area rock scene. A meeting was arranged and the two instantly rekindled their relationship, with Fisher dividing her weeks between Los Angeles and San Francisco at Parsons' expense.
Gram loved to visit Joshua Tree National Park. He would visit it often. Gram would frequently do psychedelic drugs and try to spot UFOs there. He told Phil Kauffman that he wanted his ashes spread there in Joshua National Tree Park since he loved that place and practically lived there when not in LA.
So he, Dale, Micheal, Phil, Gram's girlfriend Margaret, and Dale's unnamed girlfriend all went to stay at JNTP Inn. Where Gram got morphine from an unknown woman.
He injected himself and OD. Margaret shoved ice cubes up his ass and put him in a cold shower which worked. He was up and talking. Dale was left in charge to watch over Gram and then Gram stopped breathing. Dale tried CPR but failed. Margaret and Dale both watched Gram die. Finally they call a fucking ambulance and he's pronounced dead on arrival.
Now Gram’s stepfather is a POS okay. He wanted Gram buried in Louisiana so he could take Gram's little wealth and the family estate which didn't belong to the stepfather since he wasn't blood.
Phil and Micheal couldn't allow this. Gram wanted to be cremated and his ashes spread. So with a shit ton of booze to make an elephant drunk they take a loaned hearse, because you know everyone has a hearse on loan. They were dressed as cowboys. For as suits were “too itchy” to wear. The duo take his body back from the airport where he's meant to fly back to Louisiana back to Joshua National Tree Park.
So the duo crash in JNTP and they pour five gallons of gasoline on Gram and his coffin. Causing a fireball. But cremation and gasoline are different. So instead of having Gram's ashes they had a cooked charred Gram instead. Police were of course called. The duo was fined $750 each and made to do community service.Gram was sadly buried in Louisiana against his wishes but his stepfather didn't get anything.
Gram's wealth and estate were split between his wife, girlfriend, sister, and his daughter. And the family denied the whole illegal cremation happening and won't talk about it.
The end.
Omg that is a really good summary, very sad life tho and how he died but wow

Winter 2020 Anime Overview: Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun
Ok, so let’s get this out of the way first, 1. I adore this story so much and 2. Toilet Bound Hanako-kun has a horrible, horrible English title that is not actually at all representative of the story’s content and I have no idea what happened when it came to the team choosing that name. To the average English-speaking viewer/reader, this name 100% implies gross stuff and bathroom humor, and there is none in this show.
A Japanese reader on the other hand, would be more likely to recognize the name Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun as a spin on the classic ghost story “Hanako-san of the Toilet” only A BOY THIS TIME WHHHHA?” Basically, the story goes that a girl named Hanako in a red skirt haunts girls’ bathrooms in Japanese schools and if you knock on the third stall and call “Hanako-san” three times, she’ll appear. She might grant you a wish or pull you into Hell or something else, it varies.
(Her Wikipedia image, aww.)
Anyway, I dunno why the English title didn’t at least go with “Toilet Ghost Hanako-kun” or something that would have gotten the premise across even a little better (HE NOT TECHNICALLY BOUND BY THE TOILET EVEN, HE CAN GO ANYWHERE IN THE SCHOOL GROUNDS THE BATHROOM IS JUST HIS HOME BASE), but our boy Hanako haunting the girl’s bathroom only leads to broad jokes about our heroine being tasked with cleaning the bathroom and “dude you really shouldn’t be in here” comments, it’s pretty incidental.
Now that THAT’S out of the way, let’s talk about my LOVE FOR THIS STORY
Hanako-kun tells the story of a “regular” high school girl named Nene Yashiro, the mischievous and mysterious school ghost she befriends, and all the other weird monsters, exorcists, spirits and curses they encounter. It’s got a gorgeous, colorful bold aesthetic and art style that combines gothic and cute! It has a great mix of humor, intrigue, angst and fantasy action. basically if you love ghosts, monsters, Japanese mythology and legends, supernatural-human relationships, supernaturally fueled angst and drama, stories about trying to fix an unfair system the world has set up, wistful romance, a good shoujo manga with a Lot of Feelings (yes this is a shonen technically I’ll explain that later), weirdo dorks becoming friends AND MUCH MORE...this story will have something that will resonate with you. It’s got a lot going on, and it’s a ton of fun.
Hanako-kun is really one of those surprising stories that fits right into a hole in my story-loving heart I didn’t realize was still there, or that I’d actually been carrying since childhood. I love ghosts, see, and have since I was a kid!!! I knew this, but I kinda forgot how intensely I love them until this show reminded me again??? That’s because regular ghost stories/mysteries/whatever- I like them, but they don’t quite do it for me in the way more character-driven ones exploring the nature of being a ghost and humans and ghosts trying understand each other etc do. Stuff that really gets into the tragedy AND the fun fantasy aspect of ghosts, and plays the long game with it- and Hanako-kun scratches that itch perfectly.
Getting a little bit deeper into the premise of Hanako-kun, Nene is a very brave and sweet but not-all-that-bright girl (or, to put it more bluntly, she’s an idiot in the best way) who has a lot of romantic fantasies and insecurities and is VERY focused on them. After hearing a rumor at school that “Hanako-san of the bathroom” will grant wishes, she wishes to be able to confess to her crush and finds out its actually a weird ghost boy her age named Hanako haunting the bathroom! A lot of things happen, and she ends up cursed and bound to Hanako-kun, but also ends up slowly forming a friendship.
Turns out Hanako is the ghost in charge of the “seven mysteries/wonders” aka seven powerful supernatural entities that haunt this school (he’s number seven). These apparitions only supposed to terrorize students a LITTLE, because apparitions need to have rumors spread about them to remain in the human world.
(‘HAVE YOU HEARD?’ Oh hey shadow girls from Utena see you’ve moved to a new school.)
The rumors also generally dictate how powerful and dangerous the apparitions actually are- but SOMETHING MYSTERIOUS is changing the rumors around the school and making the apparitions go berserk and actually harm humans. So Hanako needs a human assistant to change the rumors and help him calm and seal the apparitions! That’s where Nene comes in.
Hanako himself is a very fun character- he’s very chaotic and revels in his whole “ gremlin ghost” persona, and is upfront about being a bit of an asshole. BUT he also makes his kindness, often good intentions and the fact he’ll have his friends back when it counts obvious from the beginning. B U T! He’s also got darkness and hidden depths to explore, and a lot of his persona is affected and masks deeper issues!
Our ghost boy is genuinely A TAD unstable deep down (as in he straight up has several untreated PTSD symptoms and that’s as disastrous as you’d expect) and packing some serious tragic backstory, as you might expect from a kid who died young and carries around a butcher’s knife, and it’s gonna come back to bite him and and all who care about him hard.
Especially when an overly enthusiastic exorcist named Kou Minamoto shows up! Kou is another one who’s very dumb and very good, a wannabe-shonen-protag with a heart of gold and strong sensitive, domestic side. He rounds out our main trio. Also he gets a tragic, emotionally intense relationship with yet another ghost boy that sings to my heart.
(Yes Hanako’s helping Nene to do the thing)
You may be able to tell, this story has INTENSE good-shoujo vibes despite technically being a shonen in a way that I love- it’s story very driven by big emotions, a variety of fucked up and tragically complex relationships, teen hormones running wild, etc, and it’s just delicious.
Nene is the normal-person-audience-surrogate-girl in a way that is more common for a shoujo protag, and the way her emotional connections to everyone, her sweeping romantic fantasies and her interiority are consistently in focus when she’s there- yeah, she’s definitely a plucky shoujo protag, 100%. And I’m all about that!!!
One thing I especially appreciate (though this comes across more strongly in the manga than the anime thanks to the anime rearranging things) is when Nene finds out about Hanako’s Heavy Baggage, she actually takes some time to herself to consider whether she can handle dealing with someone with these intense issues as a kid who’s never encountered stuff like this before- it’s not assumed by the story that the Sweet Girl is Obligated to help the Tragic Boy. I go into more detail about this part in this part here, but it’s that kind of attention to Nene’s needs that makes her role in the story work. Hanako and Nene and everyone’s struggles to get the hang of and properly navigate honest communication and mutual support in relationships are often really great and real-feeling
The story has a lot more things I love packed in to it- a dorky-but-still-deeply-unsettling villain gang who’s screwed up interactions are just as fun as our protagonists, yokai, A CURSED LIBRARY, some great ladies in addition to Nene, meditations on the nature of life, death, themes about fighting nihilism, and so on...I could seriously go on forever. It’s good stuff, and there’s lots of good weird supernaturals to meet.
The story’s also got tons of intrigue! The overarching plot and Hanako’s Mysterious Past is still in the process of unfolding, but it’s been great drama every step of the way! As mentioned before, the story also really relies on funny character dynamics, interaction and development to carry the whole thing and balance the drama.
The anime itself does have some pacing issues bc they crammed a lot into the first season and rearranged some stuff- an entire two chapter arc was skipped and was unlikely to be covered in the anime and some parts are noticeably rushed. I still really like the anime and it’s a solid adaptation. I love how much of the manga’s detailed aesthetic it managed to keep as well as the amazing voice acting and it made a few small but important additions. But there are some notable bumps- of course this just led me to go binge the manga (up to volume 12 is legally available digitally) and BOY DO I NOW LOVE THIS STORY EVEN MORE.
Now obviously, just because it is Exactly My Shit in a lot of ways doesn’t mean Hanako-kun is the much quested for “unproblematic fave”, there’s several caveats you should probs be aware of- its shoujo vibes also mean some classic shoujo ~Problematic tropes~ and a couple shounen ones.
THE LIST:
-Just as a general content overview thing: if this wasn’t clear the show deals heavily with death, body horror and other horror aspects. There’s heavily implied suicide and abuse and so on- as mentioned, the main character is traumatized and shows a lot of symptoms of PTSD, and Nene has to struggle to navigate her relationship with him because of this, as does Kou.
-Hanako himself has the whole ~loveable pervert~ and ~slightly possessive shoujo bad boy~ schtick going as part of his mischevious persona. In the anime so far, he never actually gropes or comments on not-in-his-naughty-mags-people’s breasts or anything of that level thankfully, but he’s very flirty, clingy, will loudly bring up porn, fond of the ol’ *says something that purposefully sounds sexually possessive* HAHAHA U THOUGHT I MEANT SOMETHING DIRTY RIGHT LOL ACTUALLY I DIDN’T.”
(My unnecessary ‘this part is kinda interesting!’ ramble: Nene always lists “sexual harassment” among Hanako’s flaws (she loves listing them), but doesn’t get visibly uncomfortable with his flirtiness or seem to mind it most times, which at least makes the whole thing more tolerable for me.
(since she doesn’t seem to mind that part and its clear he does it bc of actual affection for her, it’s actually p. cute how huggy he is.)
The one time it does cross the line and genuinely upset her, it’s treated seriously, Hanako is genuinely regretful and apologizes. That’s one of my fave moments in the story and the way it’s handled is well done.
This incident that he’s honestly pretty socially clueless as kid who died young and a lot of his bravado is to cover that up and keep people at a distance- this is a trope into itself that can use unpacking but I do at least appreciate that this is a considered character trait that’s part of his whole messed up package rather than something that thrown in there Just to Be a Fanservice Trope. (Especially since the manga confirms he never acted particularly pervy while alive, further cementing this is an affected persona).
-There’s a running gag around Nene’s insecurity over her thick ‘daikon shaped’ ankles and boys treating her badly for it.
One one hand, her body image issues are relatable, on the other, it feels cruel and annoying just how much the show finds ways to bring it up and humiliate her over and over again.
(My unnecessary “this is part is kinda interesting” ramble:The one thing i did realize that despite bringing it up constantly, we at least have no “i’m going to do this to lose weight” or “go on a diet” rhetoric, like this is just part of Nene’s body type and she knows she can’t change it? Which is kinda interesting. And I’ve spotted what might be foreshadowing something plot relevant’s going to happen with her ankles (I DON’T KNOW HOW, BUT GOD I PUT NOTHING PAST THIS STORY) so uh yeah??? either way it’s not good tho)
-”Obsessive and twisted love” is a running theme in this story, and while it’s generally acknowledged as unhealthy, it can be played for comedy in a way that could make viewers/readers uncomfortable. There’s a couple characters who’s entire thing so far is “obsessively in love with this one person” (and the one only focused on in the manga so far is one of the least interesting characters tbh ugh)
-The antagonist of the show is a member of a main character’s family, and the manner he acts towards pretty much everyone, including (and really especially) his family member, verges on seductive. This is presented as deliberately unsettling and treated as a marker of how unstable and scary he is- and though the backstory between them hasn’t been fully delved into, it’s pretty much all but confirmed he abused this family member physically and emotionally.
-The story has like, A LOT of queer subtext and pretty-heavy queer coding for one character especially, but the few times queerness blatantly comes up in the story, it’s played as a joke in the “haha that’d be kinda weird” way (aside from the rando boys who have a crush on Teru, handled pretty neutrally). It’s not as malicious as a lot of animanga can get (ONE MANGA INCIDENT ASIDE), but it’s something to Be Aware Of, and it makes it clear we’re unlikely to see subtext rise to text and makes some moments feel baity.
-And probably more I might have missed! The manga also has Some Shit in addition all the Good Shit that hasn’t been adapted yet, an early arc has Hanako crossing a serious line etc.
BUT despite how messy it is, I think it’s clear I have a lot of love for this story. In fact, I wouldn’t trade away a good chunk of its messiness (DEFINITELY SOME JUST NOT ALL), it kinda works for the characters and works in the “this story really feed my inner teen” way. Some of the trashy parts are exactly My Trash, basically.
So, I knew I’d ramble on for a while when I talked about his show, but if you’ve read this far, thanks, and I hope that means you’re gonna check out and maybe enjoy this story, bc i need more people to join me in Hanako Hell.

Rank: 10/10
PREMISE
flashback to 6-8 years ago (because the OP here can’t remember lol): it’s desk selection day in qiao yi’s classroom! a very dramatic moment for all high schoolers, qia yi has to select who she sits next to. because she’s at the bottom of the class ranking, she gets last pick, which essentially narrows down her choices to that creepy kid who writes love poetry to every female student in the class and yan mo, the scary genius student who has placed 1st in their class since...forever.
taking a gamble, qiao yi goes with yan mo. yan mo eventually agrees to tutoring qiao yi outside of class and they become friends. then...friends? if you know what i mean. it’s very sweet and cute. only problem is that yan mo is both a genius and from a Family of Means, and so is already planning on attending cambridge (yeah, fucking cambridge) after graduation. not wanting to separate, yan mo asks qiao yi to come with him and she agrees to study hard so she can get accepted to a university in the UK, too.
but then, well, bad shit happened.
qiao yi ended up staying in their home town, yan mo left for cambridge, and we got two v heartbroken teenagers on our hands.
4 years later, yan mo returns after studying in the uk, and by chance they end up bumping into each other. angry because qiao yi hurt him, yan mo puts up an ALOOF AND COLD AND I DONT CARE AT ALL front that she sadly buys. but after he leaves for the big city to pursue a business opportunity, qiao yi harnesses some amazing big dick energy to go after him, in a sort of inverse DONT LET HER GET ON THAT PLANE! move. very abba.
the plot bounces between their (and their friends’) high school years, their lives as reunited adults, and their future lives as married folks. i love it very, very much.
MAIN CHARACTERS
zhao qiao yi
as a high schooler, qiao yi was a quiet girl with low self-esteem, who consistently ranked at the bottom of her class and was always attempting to retreat into her school tracksuit like a turtle. despite this, qiao yi has some solid friends and is always kind if somewhat shy or uncomfortable in certain situations. as a adult, qiao yi works as a television producer and is clearly more confident.
she buys truly awful graphic t-shirts as thank you gifts that one feels obligated to wear. falls for scams easily. will help you fold 1000 paper stars for your boyfriend even if she hates your boyfriend because she’s ride or die like that. look at how cute she is no one is allowed to be mean to someone as cute as this.
yan mo / “frank”
if you liked se hee in because this is my first life, you’re in luck because here is a 10% angrier version. at first, yan mo seems cold, aloof, snobbish, pretentious, arrogant...
okay, but he’s ALSO got a lot of feelings and will help people out. well, at the start of the show, he’ll help two people out. but that expands to like 10. so, progress! in high school, he falls for qiao yi in the typical Cannot Spit It Out fashion, buying her sentimental cans of coke, PUTTING IN ONE EARBUD SO SHE CAN LISTEN TO THE BEATLES WITH HIM, feeling Weird about her tying his tie, and single-handedly ruining a for-profit afterschool tutoring business in about 30 seconds, because they weren’t teaching qiao yi anything, and he knew he could do it better. tbh he completely fucking destroys a lot of things and people in under a minute. #ruthless
he’s very protective of qiao yi and rather than explain it, here is a clip from the special episode where yan mo confronts another student who left a love confession meant for qiao yi in his desk by mistake (subtitles have to be selected under settings, but it’s subbed in english):
youtube
zhao guan chao
zhao qiao yi’s twin brother, who has always placed 2nd in their classes after yan mo. despite his high grades, he comes off as a laidback teen heartthrob and has a reputation for being a flake and a playboy. BUT he’s legit a chill dude and clearly popular for a reason--he gets along with (almost) everyone. he loves his sister and is extremely protective of her, especially since she’s so shy and has low self-esteem for Reasons That Will Be Explained in the Tragic Backstory. he’s such a good brother. the best brother. also looks out for qiao yi’s best friend, wu yi. understands the value of shoes.
hao wu yi
qiao yi’s best friend, and another classmate of The Crew. i say this with so, so much love, but she’s got a lot of chaotic dumbass energy. struggling along the bottom ranks with qiao yi during high school. she has the worst taste in men as a teenager, falling for the guy who literally bullied her in like. ep 2. thankfully she’s got qiao yi and guanchao.
the trio are close, and that doesn’t change as they grow up. wu yi ends up becoming a novelist who writes pop and steamy romance novels and has a significant teenage girl fanbase. it’s amazing.
fei da chuan
my boy. another classmate, he, qiao yi, and wu yi make up the official Dumbass Trio of their high school class and have adorable adventures + solidarity in it. he’s also yan mo’s uncle. somehow. because rich people families are wild. while he’s got a place to live, he more often than not crashes at yan mo’s, who Does Not Like It. but da chuan does not notice or care.
abrasive but 100% sincere about everything and toward everyone. people will think he’s an asshole or a gangster but then he’s secretly feeding abandoned kittens in the corner or something. as an adult, has the best business casual outfits. serves as a big brother figure to a lot of people, but qiao yi in particular. cannot, cannot fucking do math.
SUPPORTING
“alicia” / cheng youmei. an old family friend of yan mo’s who is very posh and rich and dignified. studied abroad with him at cambridge, and is cold toward qiao yi after arriving back in china. cosplays B)
teacher gao. everyone’s high school teacher who later owns a bar that seems to be there only for dispensing advice. seriously. there is no way this bar is economically sound as the only customers you ever see are gao’s students coming in one at a time for Wisdom and you never see them pay for anything. also the bar has no fucking roof and is directly above traintracks. i have hang-ups about this bar
lin shu. yan mo’s mother. very sweet and pretty and a ballernia turned program director. is almost never home but clearly loves her son. du chaun’s sister. somehow.
zhao suyin. qiao yi and guan chao’s mother. one of her kinks is roleplaying condor heroes characters? okay okay okay
tian weimin. qiao yi and guan chao’s stepfather who works as police officer. best dad award. he’s so sweet and corny and peak dad humor. he loves them kids & they love him back
grandpa. yan mo’s dog in high school. a very old basset hound with sad eyes:
dollar or d. i cant tell you anything about him, other than he used to be a stray and yan mo says he’s ugly, which, rude.
DRAWBACKS
plot...hm. there’s SOME plot, but this is about characters + romance + friendship + family. if you’re looking for scheming mothers-in-law or tragic car accidents or secret destinies this isn’t the one for you. similar in vibe to Reply 1988 (they even watch the show in the show :’D / make references to it)
OKAY SO every plot summary i’ve seen says that yan mo is in a relationship with someone else when he gets back to china. no he is not. i say this because it was a huge turn off for me/initially put me off watching the series. he is definitely a one-and-only type. there’s no cheating in this show. lmao, hell, neither of the mains are even interested in anyone else but each other
i liked du chuan and his love interest a lot, but they definitely didn’t get as much screen time as the others
while it’s clear qiao yi + yan mo are the mains, another couple gets a lot of screen time as well. this might be a skip if you don’t like multiple couples/secondary relationships in a show
i surprisingly enjoyed the high school storyline a lot more than the adult one? which is super weird for me, but idk i was sad when it was over because it was so cute.
some...weird technical decisions. every once in a while, the camera will have like a nostalgia filter and then it disappears and then the edges get a bit blurry and idk it feels very film school 101 to show that what’s on screen is a ~memory. the soundtrack/music is sometimes also too loud--to the point where it can drown out the actors (particularly janice wu in the high school arc, since qiao yi is soft-spoken)
REASONS TO WATCH
the lead actors (janice wu + zhang yujian) are legit two of my favorites and they have great/easy chemistry. all the actors are amazing. everyone’s loveable
SIBLING GOALS the zhao twins are amazing and they’re both each other’s biggest fans. gaunchao had some really heartwarming brother moments
i love love lmao. this spoke to a lot of my favorite dynamics: exes reunited/having to work together, childhood sweethearts reuniting as adults, “gangster” and princess, childhood friends turned lovers, bickering couples, cold man who actually has a lot of feelings, lots of people being overprotective, idk. everything was just great. 0 complaints on any of the ships.
i genuinely liked every character other than that one piece of shit poppa zhao. even alicia, who’s put into the stereotypical rich bitch role, was actually really fun and subverted a lot of expectations for this trope
it’s just. real cute y’all. probably my favorite cdrama and definitely in my top 10 (maybe 5?) dramas overall.
FINAL THOUGHTS
i love them ;;
#le coup de foudre#janice wu#zhang yujian#eden zhao#ma li#cdrama#gizka does kdrama#!my post#why yes i am procrastinating please have another in this trying time#this one's my favoriiiiiiiiiiiiiiite

Chihayafuru | Why read it?
This is a comprehensive, non-spoilers review I made of the series on Goodreads recently, and I thought I would leave it here for potential readers as well. As the series will come to a close within the next year or two, there’s no better time to pick up Chihayafuru than now. The following review covers: a basic summary of the series, a brief explanation of karuta, highlighted aspects of the narrative, and common misconceptions. Enjoy!
Chihayafuru primarily follows three childhood friends—Chihaya, Arata, and Taichi—and their journey through karuta, a Japanese sport inspired by one hundred classical poems found in the famed Hyakunin Isshu. The trio bonds over karuta as children before they're inevitably separated due to a number of circumstances, until their paths cross once again in high school. Their efforts to rise to the top of the sport's hierarchy in Japan parallel to their personal relationships with each other, as well as their insecurities, hopes, and fears for the future as they grow up. REP: visually disabled SC. TW’s: verbal parental abuse.
Karuta (or more specifically, kyogi karuta) is a Japanese card game. The poems of the Hyakunin Isshu are transcribed onto two sets of one hundred cards each—the yomifuda, or reading cards, have a full poem transcribed onto them, while the torifuda, or grabbing cards, have only the second half of a poem transcribed onto them. Each player has a territory with twenty five cards, and the object of the game is to grab the correct torifuda as soon as the corresponding yomifuda is read. There are also a few more complex rules, but ultimately, whoever clears all of the cards in their territory first wins. Karuta is a game that tests memorization, agility, hearing ability, strategy, stamina, etc.
The following are aspects of the series that I think really make it stand out!
The expansive cast. Karuta is an all-ages competitive sport. People from all walks of life compete against each other, so there's a broad range of characters introduced across the course of the series: old doctors, married women, high school teachers, elementary students. It makes the personal experiences and learning points of the various characters all the richer. The appearances of background characters are also consistently recurring, which makes the fact that the cast is so expansive even more enjoyable, because no one is truly forgotten or cast aside.
The emphasis on teachers. An experience Chihayafuru especially explores in depth is that of teachers, both literal and figurative. They are constantly brought into focus: as competitors capable of displaying as much persistence as their juniors, as mentors who do their best to nurture the younger generation, and as people of a past era fighting to hold onto what grasp of the present that they have left. Their insight is invaluable to the younger characters that the series primarily focuses on, and they can hardly be called backseat players.
The exploration into parent-child dynamics. Although the angle from which Chihayafuru explores parents and their influence on their children is a little different, it's also a just as valuable portrayed experience that I adore. There are parents who give their everything for their children, parents who don’t understand their children’s ambitions but support them as best they can, parents who demean those ambitions and create everlasting insecurities, parents who use their children’s ambitions for their own gain, etc. I think in that sense, there’s at least one parent-child dynamic that every reader could potentially relate to and find catharsis in reading about as these relationships grow and change.
The series' refusal to treat karuta as insular. A lot of sports manga have a tendency to focus almost exclusively on the sport in question, with no thought given to the characters' real-life problems, their families, or their future after high school. Chihayafuru, rather than making karuta the object of its story, instead makes it the narrative medium by which the characters' life stories are told. It's a series about people and their problems more than it is a series about the sport, which is what best sets it apart. The characters are constantly faced with the reality that they will have to confront their future and the need for a career at some point, because karuta isn’t a sport that pays nor one necessarily super-famous in Japan.
The use of poetry to parallel the events of the narrative. On the surface, karuta is just another card game; but what makes Chihayafuru special is that the poems being read at different parts of the story actually further contextualize what is happening. Although the course of the story can be understood without looking up what each mentioned poem means, there’s no denying that looking up the meanings adds so much more to the experience. It's one of the best Easter eggs the series has to offer, and it also lends further understanding to why players must cherish the cards for what they mean in order to truly love the sport. (Also, if you are into classical poetry and/or the use of nature-associated metaphors to illustrate life, this will definitely appeal to you!)
The analysis of the human psyche. There are several types of relationships and personal problems Chihayafuru explores. In particular, the friendship between Chihaya, Arata, and Taichi is complex. Their love triangle is deeply entrenched within each of their individual relationships with karuta and their individual insecurities, which is what makes it stand out to me as one of the best of its kind. Each of these characters undergoes expansive development as an individual, and yet the three of them are also inextricable of each other in terms of that development and their goals. There’s extensive exploration into what it means to truly love a sport, whether natural talent or hard work is more valuable, how ambition and success achieved at the cost of loneliness is to our own detriment, and whether the expectations of an older generation will define all that we are capable of becoming.
The exploration of playing as an individual versus as a team member. Karuta is a sport that can be played in teams (up through the end of grade school) or individually. Both aspects of play offer different insight into the nature of sports in general, about the characters' personal goals or desires, and about their complex relationships with the support systems that surround them, or lack thereof. There’s a huge emphasis put on the fact that ultimately, while experiences garnered while playing alone are valuable, karuta cannot exist on the backs of isolated individuals alone. Human camaraderie is necessary in order for the sport to thrive. One of my favorite quotes from the series is regarding this complex theme: Team matches are solo matches. Solo matches are team matches.
The women! Among its equally (or more) famous peers, Chihayafuru is perhaps the series that emphasizes on uplifting of women and women's friendships the most (an advantage lent to it by the all-ages, all-genders nature of the sport). There's a vast cast of female characters, and Chihaya and Shinobu in particular are protagonists whose strength is never undermined by the fact of them being women or the object of someone's affections. The women of the series are strong, air-headed, determined, lazy, ambitious, lost. There’s a vast array of experiences illustrated by them, and they’re allowed to embrace their womanhood while also refusing to be limited by it.
Here are some misconceptions about the series that I have seen encountered by both dedicated and casual readers (or viewers):
It's a series with little emotional payoff. As I mentioned before, Chihayafuru is most prominently a series about people and their problems. The personal journeys the characters undergo span hundreds of chapters. I've noticed before that some people give up on the series as a result, because their favorite character isn't where they want them to be within whatever span of chapters, but I want to encourage potential readers to not give into this inclination! This is a series where you need to be in it for the long haul, because the emphasis is that these emotional problems characters face are not ones that they can solve within the span of a few months. Sometimes, they take years (aside from the first volume covering a flashback sequence, the main narrative takes place over the course of three years).
Perception of the love triangle. A lot of people tend to zero in on the love triangle and make it their focus of reading, and especially for readers who attach themselves to Taichi, this often leads to disappointment in where the narrative leads (as he is a character who struggles immensely on his journey towards growth and self fulfillment). It's important to remember that each member of the childhood trio is their own individual! Issues tied to the love triangle are certainly important, but readers often miss out on crucial emotional development for characters because they're too focused on who they think Chihaya should end up with, when that's not even remotely the point. The narrative almost always emphasizes that at the heart of it all, Chihaya, Arata, and Taichi will always have each other. What matters more than the outcome of the love triangle is whether their friendship will ultimately heal and thrive, and whether they will grow as individuals who can support each other rather than act like crutches for each other.
This is not a series about sports! This may be a confusing thing to say, and it may not even be something that other Chihayafuru fans would agree with me on. But again, I'll reiterate: Chihayafuru is most prominently a series about people and their problems. Some matches can span several chapters, while others barely last a few panels. The focus is not so much on the sport as it is on what the sport or match is doing emotionally for the individual. In that sense, it's a bit different from its contemporaries, where almost every important match is covered in detail, from one move to the next. Although there are plenty of moments where karuta matches are covered in detail, don’t be surprised if there are moments where they proceed too fast, and think to yourself why showing the whole match may not have been necessary!
These are the main points that I could come up with, but if you have any questions, feel free to send me an ask on my blog. I hope any part of this can convince you to read Chihayafuru, as it’s a wonderful story that offers a lot of layers to dissect to its audience. There’s always something new to discover with it, and that’s what makes it special.
#chihayafuru#ayase chihaya#mashima taichi#wataya arata#wakamiya shinobu#meta#i'm just tagging them all so it gets spread gjfkgjfkdhl#but uhhh. i hope this is comprehensive#also if you disagree with anything pls send me an ask!#rather than reblog onto it with an essay or something gjfkjhlgdf#since this is a recommendation post i want to keep it clean#and as accessible to others as possible

Behind the Fic: Canon and Beyond - Jonah Argentum, portrayed by TV Tropes
One of my favorite thing to spend my free times is browsing through TV Tropes about my favorite characters/animes/games/others. So, I've see some tropes and I know my favorite ones.
So, why don't make a trope list for Jonah? I'm bored, okay?
Will probably updates as the story goes.
WARNING: This might contains some spoilers from my fanfiction Twisted-Wonderland: Our Precious Treasure.
.
.
Adaptation Deviation: Since Jonah is an original character to replace the protagonist/Yuu, there will be deviations. Most notably is Yuu came from ‘another world’, Jonah is a native from Twisted-Wonderland as it revealed in Wassailia’s Canon
Affectionate Nickname:
Ace gave Jonah the nickname 'Captain' after the Dwarfs' Mine adventure because of his eyepatch which makes him looks like a pirate and how he's able to command the other three in the fight. Soon, nearly everyone calls him 'Captain'.
It turns out the ‘captain’ nickname was used way before by Jonah’s childhood friends
Floyd calls him 'Baby Seal' because of his small posture.
When Malleus first appears, he calls Jonah 'Little Star'. Lilia also calls Jonah this in his recent appearance. This comes from Jonah and Malleus’ first meeting where they watched the meteor shower together and Jonah mentioned that he likes the stars
All-Loving Hero: Jonah, at his core, is a good boy. He's able to charm nearly everyone around him with his kind personality, even implied he has a remarkable capacity to forgive and willing to help his enemies.
After Riddle's overblot, Jonah suggested that the prefect needed a time-out, even willing to take care of him until Riddle was ready to go back to Heartslabyul.
He was able to convince Trey to talk to Riddle after the overblot incident where Trey felt guilty for not being a good friend.
He was willing to help Riddle in the accident-investigations because he genuinely believes that Riddle is growing to be a better person.
During the confrontation with Savanaclaw during the Magishift, Jonah saved Ruggie, despite their last meeting was not in a good term (with Jonah chasing Ruggie when they found out he was the culprit behind the accidents), from Leona who was about to use his Unique Magic toward him.
After Azul overblot, Jonah said sorry for ‘betraying’ Azul in the first place
When Jonah confronts Jamil, he’s hoping that he can change Jamil’s mind of taking down Kalim because he known that Kalim loves Jamil and Jonah doesn’t want to see him heartbroken
Amnesiac Hero: The Dark Mirror is unable to bring Jonah home because he can't remember where he came from or his past. Though, Che'nya implies that Jonah was once a Royal Sword Academy student, which can explain his heroic tendencies. This adds to the fact during Wassailia’s Canon when Jonah unknowingly visit his hometown, he doesn’t remember anything, not even his father or his childhood friends.
Artificial Limb: During the confrontation with Savanaclaw during the Magishift, Jonah lost his hand because Leona used his Unique Magic on him to saved Ruggie. He now supports a prosthetic hand, made by Idia.
Batman Gambit: Similar to canon, Jonah pulled this in the night of the final day against Octavinelle by trying to convince Leona to join in.
Beware the Nice Ones: Jonah is a kind boy who is willing to befriend everyone, but if you threatened his crew, he won't hesitate to fight.
Big Damn Heroes:
He swooped in when Leona was about to attack Riddle during the Savanaclaw ambush.
He pushed Ruggie out of the way before Leona unleashed his Unique Magic, which resulted in him losing his hand.
Jonah and Idia crashed into the Halloween Party to stop Maryanne from sucking everyone’s soul.
Jonah crashed into Mostro Lounge office to stop Riddle from signing a golden contract.
Book Dumb: Whatever scene that involved school and studies, Jonah seems to be struggling with it.
Chronic Hero Syndrome: His All-Loving Hero tendencies can be seen as this. The fact he goes out of his way to keep his crew and others out of danger, even recklessly putting himself first in the way which often resulted in him getting hurt.
Clueless Chick Magnet: Platonatically. Jonah has no idea how much power he has in attracting other people into his circle.
Crowley acts similar to a father-figure to Jonah, even scolding him when he got hurt.
It seems like he has a good relationship with Epel despite only talking with him a few times during Flying Class.
After getting hurt in a one-on-one Magishift Battle with Leona, everyone was worried about Jonah. This included the Octavinelle Trio who Jonah is working with. Azul refused to make a deal with Leona unless he was willing to work for Azul in Jonah's place. Also, Floyd was willing to 'squeeze' Leona for hurting 'baby seal'.
Despite only knowing Jonah from Board Game Club, Idia was willing to make a very high-tech prosthetic hand for Jonah when he lost his.
During The Merchant of the Deep Sea, almost everyone is willing to help Jonah to fight against Octavinelle because he helped them first. Most notably is Riddle giving up his unique magic and Leona joining in the last day.
It’s implied that when they were little, Jonah managed to win the heart of Jacob, Bridgette, and Magdalene to form Shooting Star
Cool Sword: His dorm uniform comes with a silver cutlass that can repel magic. It broke during the battle with overblotted Jamil.
Dark-Skinned Redhead
Desperate Looking For A Purpose In Live: The biggest reason why he was acting like this is that he believes that this is the only thing he can do. The title “captain” is the only thing he’s holding on to in his actions as if it’s his job to fix the problems.
Distressed Dude: In The Tactician of the Scorching Sand, Jonah got hypnotized by Jamil and was taken hostage during the final battle.
Don't Fear the Reaper: Jonah, when he was a child, didn’t understand that giving a name to a fae would give them control over you. He gave his full name to Malleus when he was a child during their first meeting, meaning that there’s a possibility that Malleus can control Jonah.
Fatal Flaw: His Chronic Hero Syndrome with a dash of With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility. Jonah knows a lot of his friend sees him as a leader, and thus, as the ‘captain’, it’s natural for him to think about others' safety more than his own. He feels responsible for the safety of his crew and has no hesitation when it comes to saving them. He even admits that he feels guilty if his crew ever gets hurt. He also has no idea how much this causes his friend to worry about him.
Fire-Forge Friends: How his friendship with Ace, Deuce, and Grim was formed.
The Hedonist: When Jonah was little, he pulled Jacob, Bridgette, and Magdalene into wacky shenanigans.
Heroes Want Redheads: More like villains, most notably is Riddle and Azul.
Hypno Fool: Jonah, knowing possibility that Jamil has hypnotize power, still trying to corner Jamil and ended up getting hypnotized.
Idiot Hair
It's All My Fault: He’s very scared of his friends getting hurt that he would blame himself for not doing anything to protect them.
Journey to the Center of the Mind: Jonah always has this every time after they defeated. He would be sent to the overblot character’s Mental World similar to the Disney movie they represented (like the Queen of Heart’s rose maze for Riddle and the burning Prideland for Leona).
The Leader:
Jonah is the prefect of Ramshackle Dorm and can be count as the main leader of the first year gang.
It turns out he was also the leader and founder of Shooting Stars, which consists of him, Jacob, Bridgette, and Magdalene
Living MacGuffin: He’s possibly the only one who can open and see the ‘Disney Movies’ MacGuffin.
Magical Eye: His right eye can absorb the blot from the overbloted dorm leaders.
The Napoleon: Jonah's height is 157 cm. But, despite his height, he gets the title ‘captain’ even his own little crew.
Near-Death Experience: Jonah has many of them.
Nice Hat: His Dorm Uniform comes with a pirate hat to fit his theme.
Oblivious to Love: He was casually flirting at Riddle during the last chapters of The Crimson Tyrant, unaware how it made Riddle into a blushing mess afterward.
Supreme Chef: Jonah has a surprising talent in cooking, even getting a job as a chef at Mostro Lounge.
Tough Act to Follow: Jonah feels this when his childhood friends expect him to return to a cheerful leader that he once was before amnesia
Un-Sorcerer: The Dark Mirror did claim that Jonah has magical power, however, it's in dormant that even it couldn't detect it. Leona also said that Jonah smells like he has a bit of magic in him.
Virgin Power: During the Halloween mini-arc in Break & Gosh, it’s confirmed that Jonah is a 17-years old virgin. Which means he has the power to unseal a soul hungry ghost. And he did.
We Used to Be Friends:
The summary of Jonah and Azul’s relationship during The Merchant of the Deep Sea until mid-The Tactician of the Scorching Sand
Jonah’s relationship with his childhood friends can count as this
What Is This Thing You Call "Love"?: Jonah admits that he doesn't quite understand about romance and sex.

? ~ Threats & Frights Tonight
I decided to do some smaller fanfics to just make sure everyone is on the same page as me so the SongFic will be revealed later on. However, I’m going to write out of order just like season 3 because I thought this would be cool and a nice way to introduce my OC.
I believe this takes place in season 3, after Lila gets back but before the oh so great finale episodes, so they’re still like around 14. I won’t mention all the episodes but I will post more about how my OC becomes friends with Kagami and Luka. (And Felix because I love Fanon Felix)
Also, I want to ask, do you want consistent salt, salt but redemption for few or all?
Edit: The question mark just means I’m unsure which part this takes place in my main story. It doesnt mean too much.
Word Count: 2203
***
“HAWKMOTH!”
Marinette stood there frozen, her new best friend, one she knew she could trust with everything, one who knew her identity… Was being Akumatized right in front of her.
Rosina, the newbie of Collège Françoise Dupont, the one who was able to get Marinette and Chloé to settle their differences and let them become friends had fallen for Hawkmoths Akuma.
Why don’t we go back to see how that happened?
***
Ever since Marinette and Chloé’s friendship blossomed apparently overnight, things had only gotten worse for the girls.
All the classmates had believed that they were always friends but decided to trick them so Marinette would be seen as their ‘Everyday Ladybug’ while Chloé was the bully.
Thank god they ditched her as soon as they saw her “true inner colours”
However, even with all the glares and comments directed towards the girls they never even bat an eye to them, they just kept on walking ahead never looking back. They even had the nerve to smirk back at them.
And now it had appeared there was one more person they wanted to convert.
Rosina Scoats.
She had been a new student to Dupont, and everyone had been excited.
She had looked so pleasant, and everyone had tried to warn her of Marinette, the bully, the one who had made Lila feel so sad and disheartened after Marinette had openly tried to oppose her for being a “liar”.
After all, she had done nothing wrong.
…Nothing wrong.
And yet, no matter what they did, she had always gone back to the outcasts of the class, and they talked as if they had been long-time friends.
It was hopeless now, she had fallen for their lies, there was no way they could save the poor girl.
Although they thought it weird it was only after she came that Marinette and Chloé became friends.
***
It had just started like any other day. Marinette and Chloé had arrived first and walked to the back where their seats were located, not that they minded being at the back.
Because Rosina had been staying with Marinette she made sure the busy girl got up early for school much to Tikki and her Parents comfort, although she hadn’t appeared yet as there was something the girl had to take care of before coming so the trio became dos at the back.
Then the quiet ones, Nathaniel, Juleka, Ivan, Mylène and Adrien came in. The latter held a disapproving stare at the two girls who should’ve taken the higher ground. They shouldn’t have rocked the boat, and what did they do? The exact opposite.
Honestly, they were worse than Lila at this point.
He just wanted them to apologise to Lila and they could be friends again, couldn’t they see the error in their ways?
It was even worse when he had that argument with Chloé. After that everyone told him it was great, he finally got rid and stopped being friends with Chloé, he could, at last, see just how much she had hurt all his friends and he felt like a fool; he only just realised. Chloé had hurt people while Lila hadn’t.
How ironic right?
Then all the rest came in, ending with Lila, again sprouting some nonsense about meeting several celebrities and she was like a little Sister to them all. Alya was sucking all this information and typing it on her Ladyblog, which by now should be called ‘Lilablog’ considering all the information dedicated to her ‘bestie’ instead.
“Of course, but because they live so far away, they can’t come and celebrate my birthday. Sometimes it’s hard being so far away from them, they’re like family, but they always give me a message and the best presents to make up for it” Her fake tears earned her so many sympathy votes the girls were surprised she wasn’t nominated for best actress.
A scoff was heard, and all heads turned towards the back, it would’ve been creepy considering how in tune they all were, but they didn’t say anything.
“Yes, is there anything wrong?” Lila innocently asked but pulled a disgusted face when no one saw her.
“Oh, nothing nothing, I just love watching Reality TV so early.” Chloé knew they all hated her, but she didn’t care, Lila had already turned Sabrina against her, so she only had Marinette and luckily newbie Rosina as friends.
“Don’t listen to them Lila, their just jealous of all the people that love you compared to them” Some snickers were heard but the girls didn’t pay them any thought. However, a noise disrupted the talk amongst the students.
A phone ringing.
Marinette’s phone was ringing.
“H-” Before she could even get a word out, she had to pull her phone back by how loud the girl’s voice had been on the other line.
“OPEN THE WINDOW NOW OPEN THE WINDOW NOW OPEN THE WINDOW NOW OPEN THE WINDOW NOWWWWWW!!!!!!!!” Marinette confused but used to weirdness in her life did what she was told and opened the nearest window. It was a close call as a body slammed into her just as the window opened, leaving no room to run.
“Owww…”
“Sooooooorrry about that Mari. I got held up again. That thing I told you I had to do while here, weeeeell it came up, so I had to take care of it, and then Piper wanted to- AHH! Piper are you ok? You aren’t hurt, are you?”
The redhead turned to the bundle she had been carrying while she flew through.
A child, possibly 4 or 5, with black hair and pink eyes in a colourful mini dress, that looked incredibly cute on her all the girls awwed at the girl that they all knew as Piper.
Their meeting would be stated for another time.
Part of her hair was tied in a small high side ponytail, adding to the girl’s cuteness as well as her fringe. They just hope the girl wouldn’t become a bully like the other two. But whenever they tried to come up to her she was always too shy and would bury her head in the girl Rosina.
The little girl nodded before going over to Marinette and trying to help her up. Even if she was shy of the class somehow the bullies were able to warm their way into the girl’s heart, it seemed surreal.
What did they have that the rest didn’t?
“Don’t worry Piper I’m fine you don’t have to worry about me.” The girl nodded before hugging her after noticing everyone was still glaring at her, or rather Marinette.
Before they could even sit-down Lila just thought she should tell the class her thoughts.
“Shouldn’t Piper be around some nicer people? I would hate to think what would happen if she continues to be in that type of environment?” She said sneakily yet no one seemed to notice while they all still nodded.
Rosina although knew about the situation between her friends still always wanted to remain positive for her besties and besides, she was great at being civil.
“While I appreciate your concern, Layla-”
“-Lila-”
“Layla, my seat is assigned here, and Piper would tell me if she wanted to move. So, Piper, would you like to-?”
“No thanks,” A barely audible voice spoke before she could even finish.
“Well you heard it folks the answer is no. Hey, Piper, you want to draw something?” She nodded enthusiastically and started drawing while Lila wasn’t finished.
“But I’m worried. I’ve been to multiple care homes and helped out whenever I could, and all children love me. You can just leave her with me, I’m sure it would be good for her to spend some time with new people.” The rest seemed to agree with her and started to encourage both girls to hang out with them instead, even if the child had previously said no.
But Piper had been focusing on some particular words.
Leave her with me.
Leave her.
Leave
Leave
LEAVE
‘No’
“No no no, p-please don’t leave me, p-please y-you promised me you would s-stay with me!”
Everyone stopped, they didn’t realise the girl would be so upset over this. Even Lila, she was mean but not heartless, especially to a kid.
The three girls at the back tried to comfort the girl with her worries, one bluenette especially worried.
But that didn’t stop the Akuma from entering. Mylène had been the first person to see it.
“Quickly move! The Akuma’s headed for the girl” Even if the teacher was there what could she do? Become Zombizou and have to go through all those Kissy Boo again? No thank you.
Rosina didn’t know what to do. Sure she had faced Akumatized victims before and helped Ladybug (Marinette) whenever she could, she was an amazing fighter, but that was all after the Akuma.
This, right here, was now.
And like hell, she would let Piper be Akumatized.
“Chloé!” Before the girl could respond Piper was placed in the blonde’s arms anyway, the girl would’ve denied but she could see the urgency in her eyes, plus she was trying to be a better friend anyway.
At that moment Rosina was concentrating. She focused her feelings, learning that you must keep a level head in this city, she had to make sure to display positive emotions all the time.
So she threw all of that out the window.
The Akuma had nearly touched Piper but quickly changed course once more prominent emotions appeared. Surely Hawkmoth would prefer a capable fighter to a little girl?
Hehe, you’ll see.
There was a bow in her hair, just begging Hawkmoth to Akumatize it.
And so, that was how everyone stood in terror to the girl with the magical pink mask on her face.
***
“HAWKMOTH!”
“Rosina please control it you have to!” Marinette grabbed onto the girl, trying to calm her. Tikki looked apprehensive, there was no way Marinette would be able to turn into Ladybug now, all they could do was wait.
“Angerella, that anger is nothing like I’ve felt before. I am Hawkmoth, I see all you want is to protect your little girl, I can give you the power to make that come true, all I ask is for Ladybug and Chat Noir’s Miraculous.” Hawkmoth’s offer and voice seemed so tempting.
“I can protect and conquer” No. No this couldn’t be possible, all that’s left would be the purple substance covering her, she was going to have to fight her friend.
A friend with a lot more fighting experience.
…
“If I cared.” Marinette breathed a sigh of a relieve, as well as Adrien. She knew she should’ve trusted her newfound friend but she was so scared. She’d make it up anyhow.
“What!?”
“Now Hawkmoth, I have your attention and you best listen to every word I say” The class looked on in anticipation, some had run off to try and get some help from teachers. Alya, thinking it would be great for the Ladyblog, started recording the whole ordeal.
“That girl you were about to Akumatize, if you ever try to Akumatize her again I will give you hell. Not even the heroes would be able to protect you from my wrath, understand”
“…”
“Your answer is duly noted. Now!” She but her hands on her head, seemingly struggling with the sudden Akuma. Was Hawkmoth increasing his control?
“Get out of my head! Now!”
…
Swoosh
“It's… Gone…” They didn’t expect that to happen, certainly not.
So they cheered and raved how great and cool she was able to do that. Alya cheerfully exclaimed how excited that scoop she was able to get and posted it on her blog right away.
And they all carried on as nothing had happened.
As if it wasn’t important.
Little did they know repelling an Akuma took a lot out of you, ask Chloé she’d tell you.
“Rosina are you ok? You had us so worried” When Rosina stumbled because of her unbalance, Marinette held onto her tighter, that ordeal really frightened her.
“I-I -pant pant- just need a moment, can we get some air? Please?” She nodded and the four immediately left.
“Rosy? Are, are you ok?” Rosina smiled and hugged the girl as they approached the entrance.
“Of course, don’t worry Li’l Piper, no one will ever hurt you, if Hawkmoth knows what’s good for him he will stay away from you.” She rubbed her head as the little girl smiled.
“I gotta say that was impressive, you had me worried for a sec but of course you’d be able to pull something like that off” The blonde lifted her ponytail up and down while commenting the tired girl.
“Thanks for your belief. I never would’ve forgiven myself if I hurt either of you. I love you two so much” She hugged them both surprising them more.
“We love you more Rosina. But please don’t scare us like that again. Angerella” Marinette couldn’t stop the light punch coming from the redhead before they all laughed.
All the while Hawkmoth in his lair was coming to a conclusion.
“She is the one who will bring me both the Miraculous’”

2019/8/22 Ch. 5 Update: Progress Update, Suspect Reveal, and Future Chapter Hints!
Well shit.
Chapter Five is coming way later than I wanted, and so is this announcement post! What a coincidence. Bitterness about my powerlessness against both the forces of life and myself aside, here’s the update on Chapter Five!
Chapter Five of Danganronpa 21: The Old World’s Future is currently at a word count of 20480 words, which for reference is 38 pages (I wrote by accident earlier that was 39, that was my bad). At this point, I would say that the chapter is about half way done, which sounds insane considering that the fic without Chapter Five is 19923 words. While Chapter Five is meant to be a long chapter, it should also be acknowledged that I’m still on the writing phase. This means that entire chunks of the chapter will likely be eliminated because they take too much time. It’s important that I stay within the boundaries of how many words is acceptable, but also have a story with writing that flows. All of this will be done within the editing phase, which I have not hit yet... but as I write, I can’t help thinking about it. This is why there are six drafts of Chapter Five, because my brain is a critical jerk.
That aside though, Chapter Five of is entitled An Unpredictably Pleasant School Life, with the main focus of the chapter being the budding friendship between Koichi, Phoenix, and Natsumi. The chapter follows the trio as they combat probably the most exciting icebreaker activity yet. Alongside the rest of their class, they are divided into “subdivisions” and locked in to a scavenger hunt in which they must race to find all of the items on their list before Class 99-B does. Adding on an ice cream-related bet from Tamiko’s team and the presence of a fourth teammate in their subdivision, the three of them will have to set out to do their very best in the scavenger hunt while building their friendships along the way.
That is... until something -- or rather, someone -- unexpected shows up to work up more mystery than the simple scavenger hunt that had been set out before.
I would say that this definitely has an advantage against chapters two, three, and four, mostly because this one is not an establishing chapter. Sure, there’s a little bit of fun here and there with the whole scavenger hunt aspect, but ultimately this portion of the story is where the action starts to kick in. There’s the revelation of antagonistic forces, as well as the completion of the introduction to all of the students that can be defined as the “suspects”.
You know, for Makoto’s little accident that was in the first chapter... just in case you forgot about that, among the pleasant things that have happened in the chapters before.
Still, even though they’re being fully being revealed to you in the chapter, I figured I might as well give you a little preview of their names and what they look like:
I love how it looks like Asuga and Kosuke were made from a template... they weren’t... also love that low resolution.
Your suspect list currently boils down to:
Kotone Sawamatsu, Class 99-A, Talent Class Student, Super High School Level Child Star. Best described as a dramatic and snobbish girl who is overly concerned with reputation, to the point where she will refuse to associate with certain people because of how their reputation might affect hers. A student who travels a lot and has lots of influence over others, and could easily get others on her side if she needed to.
Asuga Oyama, Class 99-A, Talent Class Student, Super High School Level Martial Artist. On the surface, Asuga is often boiled down to being a bit of a bully -- which she most definitely is, but there’s more to her than simple intimidation. Determined to make a name for herself at Hope’s Peak Academy and go down in history among fighters like Sakura Oogami, power seems to be this girl’s biggest motive. Her past is checkered with violent tendencies and expulsions, and she is unlikely to comply with anyone who is trying to keep her in her place.
Kosuke Imagawa, Class 99-B, Talent Class Student, Super High School Level Figure Skater. Kosuke is often described by others as a boy who has completely changed within the span of a year. Following the mysterious murder of his figure skating partner, Kosuke became a rough and cold boy who seemed to look out mostly for himself. He reportedly does have a warm side, but that tends to be reserved for people who prove themselves to have good intentions. Kosuke is a student who travels a lot, and is motivated in his interactions with others to prevent wrongdoings. He does not wish for anyone to suffer as his partner suffered, and so he is cautious about the manner in which others’ actions affect a general populus. Additionally, it can be noted that he is Phoenix Tachibana’s roommate and Tamiko Matsumoto’s figure skating partner.
Tamiko Matsumoto, Class 99-B, Reserve Class Student, Figure Skating Student. The warmest of the four, Tamiko is an enthusiastic and fun-loving girl who seems to be weirdly good at making friends and connecting with others. She is highly determined to aid in the mystery, although most aren’t sure whether she wants to do it to clear her name or prevent the truth from slipping out. Her motive lies within her parentage, as she is the daughter of Yori and Mamoru Matsumoto -- two future foundation members who weren’t exactly keen on Makoto during their reform days.
So now you have your suspects. Only one of them’s guilty. As the story goes on, it’s up to you to decide which it will be. I know at the moment a lot of you are favouring Tamiko, and I wouldn’t say that’s unreasonable. She is the first of the foursome to be introduced, as well as the one who has the closest relationship to Koichi himself. Still, I wouldn’t go jumping on the “TAMIKO DID IT” bandwagon so soon. There’s a lot more to unravel! Even so, I just thought I’d let you get a little taste of this fantastic foursome before the real mystery sets in. I hope you like them, because despite the fact that all four of them are awful in some way... I love writing them. And I hope you will love reading them.
With that being said though, this is mostly all of what I can report on Chapter Five without spoiling what’s coming your way. I mean, there’s a scene that I’m pretty sure will be cut in editing, but apart from that... Not much. In terms of the work I have done outside of Chapter Five, though, I’ve been beefing up other parts of the story line as well. I’m overwhelmingly pleased with how they’re coming out, and I feel like there’s really going to be a lot more to look forward to. Not only does the interesting stuff continue after Chapter Five, there is also so, so much cute and heartfelt and heartbreaking and surprising and just all around really cool stuff that I get to write. You’ll be seeing a lot more of characters like Koichi, Natsumi, Phoenix, Tamiko, Kosuke, Kotone, and Asuga; but you’ll also get a share of other side characters like Makoto, Kyoko, Seiko, Hope, Yasuhiro, Byakuya, and so on.
Without spoiling too much, I’ll tell you about some of the scenes I have planned. But here’s the twist -- I’m doing it Danganronpa quotes only. I’ll tell you what characters the scene involves, but that’s it aside from the quote. Have fun deciphering what they might mean, and feel free to attack my inbox with your guesses!:
- Natsumi, Koichi, and Phoenix: “I guess not knowing someone doesn’t mean you don’t understand them.” (Original Speaker: Kyoko Kirigiri)
- Koichi, Makoto, Kyoko, Hope: “Don’t go around doing whatever you feel like. It causes problems. And not just for me. For everyone else.” (Original Speaker: Kyoko Kirigiri)
- Natsumi, Koichi, Phoenix, Tamiko: “Everyone’s birthplace and upbringing is different. It’s obviously impossible for them to understand each other.” (Original Speaker: Monokuma)
- Makoto, Koichi: “A man’s weight consists nothing but what he burdens himself with.” (Original Speaker: Mondo Oowada)
- Koichi, Hope, Seiko, Makoto, Kyoko, Komaru: “It’s odd, isn’t it? People die every day but the world continues on like nothing happened.” (Original Speaker: Kyoko Kirigiri)
- Natsumi, Phoenix: “Humans are beings that need to grow in order to have a reason for living.” (Original Speaker: Genocider Syo)
- Phoenix, Natsumi, Tamiko: “And whoever stands before you, don’t let them push you around.” (Original Speaker: Kyoko Kirigiri)
And that’s probably where I’ll leave you for now... Let me know what you think might come out of these ideas... If you feel like it, of course. You’re not forced to put up with whatever silly things I’m doing. I’m just doing what I can to tell you a lot while also telling you a little.
But if there’s one thing I hope you can take away from this, it’s that I’m definitely still full of passion for the work. I’m determined to create something that you will all hopefully enjoy.
As always, thank you from the bottom of my heart for your support and your love. I say it all the time, but people who interact with my work make me so unbelievably happy. I’m glad to have you all around to read my stories. You make me want to work as hard as I possibly can on the things that I do, and so that’s why I’m going to do my best to make Chapter Five as perfect as it can be. I’ll do my best to not disappoint you!
Thank you again, and as always, have a good day/week/month/year/life in general!

Yugioh villains ranked from best to worst according to me, Yugioh villain ranking expert
Marik - Marik got shit DONE. No beating around the bush with “ooh I’m gonna make Yugi go through a tournament and THEN beat him up” or anything like that, Marik knew what he wanted and he went for it. Did an infinitely better job of like, actually hurting the Crewgi than anyone else (the duel on the docks? Hello??). He’s also a fashion god, and had a backstory that a. actually did a decent job of making the audience feel bad for him, and b. actually gave him a clear motivation for why he wanted to kick Yugi’s ass specifically, plus the addition of Ishizu and Rishid made him feel much more like an actual person with a history and not just a plot device. Marik deserved better, Marik knew what he was doing way more than anyone else in this fucking show, I’d die for him, 10/10
Thief King Bakura - Now THIS. This is a villain. An A-list asshole. Dramatic. Evil. Rude. Beautiful, yet rugged. A dick with no redeeming qualities. Gets shit done! This is how you do a villain!! Sadly he loses points for his backstory- If you’re gonna make a sympathetic villain you gotta go all the way with it, you know? You say “his whole town was murdered in human sacrifice by the bourgeois when he was a child” and I’m like oh shit, that’s fucked up, I support him, but then you follow it up with “so now he’s trying to summon a chaos god and kill people who had nothing to do with it” and I’m like. Oh. Actually he’s an asshole. 8.5/10
Pegasus - You gotta give him credit for theatrics, and he actually did manage to accomplish some things. Unfortunately, every time he opens his fucking mouth I want to kick his ass. Also, his whole backstory feels weirdly shoehorned in and his motivation is really weird? Like, what’s with this whole “My fiancee died so now I’m going to set up a giant tournament explicitly for the purpose of dueling Yugi, specifically, whom I have never met, in order to take over a completely unrelated company” thing? What?? Like I understand in context, but. Takahashi what the fuck. 7/10
Bandit Keith - He’s just SO fucking American, 9/10
Kaiba - Ok, you know when you have that one friend who’s kind of a douche, and you try to be nice to them but they’re still a douche half the time, but you’re in kind of an awkward spot where you can’t really ditch them either? That’s Kaiba. The only reason he’s even on here is because he was, admittedly, a hell of a villain during the school arc, but then he got a role change to weird antihero and like... bruh. 7.5/10, just drink your friendship juice already dumbass
Yako Tenma - I mean, at least his duels were cool? But like, man, what the fuck. Get some therapy or whatever, geez. 5/10
Zorc Necrophades - Extremely uncool, also, like. His main thing was brainwashing a half-blind old dad who loves his family too much to even be a 100% effective minion? That’s... just sad tbh, 3/10
Yami Bakura - HAHAHAHA OH MY GOD. I CAN’T BELIEVE THIS GUY IS SUPPOSED TO BE A MAIN VILLAIN. COME ON NOW. First of all, he has the exact same vibes as an upper middle class white kid in like 2009 who thinks he has a lot of angst and wants to be emo but his upper middle class white mom doesn’t let him so he still dresses like a prep and probably just listens to edgy music, but like, only Evanescence because he convinced his mom to buy him their CDs when they were still being sold in the Christian section of music stores, and every time he listens to them he thinks about how much Sasuke was right. Anyway, aside from his looks, Yami Bakura is the LEAST effective villain I have seen in anything ever, holy shit. He spends all his time talking about how he’s gonna steal the Millennium Puzzle, yet despite the fact that he goes to the same school as Yugi and could literally just rip the Puzzle off his neck at any time, it takes him 5 seasons to accomplish absolutely anything. His best plans have consisted of “follow the gang around, occasionally monologuing about how I’m gonna steal the Millennium Puzzle, and then piggyback off whatever this season’s actual villain is doing” and “challenge the King of Games to Dungeons & Dragons, but like, eeeevil Dungeons & Dragons”. Yami Bakura makes Dr. Doofenshmirtz feel like Dr. Doom. If you got Team Aqua and Team Magma together and told them to go kill the Pharaoh they could accomplish it in half the time it takes Yami Bakura to even finish telling the audience he’s going to kill the Pharaoh. Also, he lives in an evil tambourine. 0/10, I’d say he’s the Rocket Trio of Yugioh but that’d be too high of a compliment
Noah Kaiba - I haven’t actually finished season 3 yet, but 0/10 bitch
Yami Marik - -10/10 BITCH

AU College Fic. Farkle never figured out how Riley really felt about Lucas, so it never got out. Now she’s turning 21 and the gang decides to go to Las Vegas to celebrate. Sometimes what happens in Vegas doesn’t always stay in Vegas.
Rating: M
Pairing: Rucas
Word Count: 8,708
Cross-posted at ff.net
Soundtrack (although not at all organized and subject to edits)
A/N: This song got dropped today, but it’s P E R F E C T to listen to as you read this chapter: “It Won’t Kill Ya” by The Chainsmokers.
Also, 21 is now rated M. And yes, I do take a little advantage of that switch in this chapter. This chapter is dedicated to @gmwpluto because she held my hand and kicked my butt throughout multiple rewrites and edits. She is the best sounding board ever cause she makes you kinda fight for what you’re doing and explain the reasoning behind it and yeah, I’m gonna get killed for this chapter, but I stand by everything that happens and considering the meltdown I had about it, I’m pleased with the result. Thank you Amy.

Chapter Ten: Tension
Her brain couldn’t process anything that was running through her chaotic mind. She had hurt him. She knew that much, but he had hurt her too. He accused her of trying to pit Asher against him, of trying to create this buffer between whatever was growing between them, but that wasn’t true. It wasn’t true because she knew that whatever this was couldn’t possibly last longer than the next few days. He had always been non-committal when it came to his girlfriends. A few weeks or even a few months would be the most she could possibly hope for. She wasn’t willing to sacrifice her friendship with him when they were in middle school, and as strained and practically non-existent as it was now, she still didn’t think she could bear it if he completely vanished from her life. That’s what would happen next, wouldn’t it? They would go out for a while and he would realize that she wasn’t what he was looking for, so he would break up with her. Afterward, she wouldn’t be able to be around him because it would hurt too much. Their friends would be forced to take sides, and the entire group would fall apart. She couldn’t let that happen.
As tears streamed down her cheeks, she knew that one day, she’d look back on this whole experience and know that she made the right decision by walking away from this before it was too late. As she watched the fountains dance to the beat of the music, her heart finally declared war on her brain.
She wasn’t sure how long she stayed on the patio by herself. Part of her had hoped that he would come back outside so they could go ahead and completely annihilate one another with more accusations and resentment. Maybe it would be better to get it over with in one fell swoop as opposed to prolonging the inevitable. It was her fault, anyway. She was the one who suggested they play ‘seven minutes in heaven’ for real. She was the one who could have walked away after her alarm went off the first time. Maybe then, they wouldn’t be like this. Maybe then they wouldn’t act like two complete idiots who, if she didn’t know any better, seemed to be completely in love with one another.
She scoffed as she wiped her eyes. That was impossible. While she knew that it was true on her end, she knew that if he wanted to figure everything out, if he really wanted to work through it, that he wouldn’t have left her the way he did.
She didn’t even want to have the stupid conversation in the first place—not now anyway. She was drunk. He was drunk. She knew it would end badly, but he kept pushing her until he finally figured it out.
As Riley turned away from the show to go back inside, her head was spinning. He knew now. After seven years of hiding it from him, he now knew that she didn’t step back from him because her feelings for him had changed.
She took a deep breath as she made her way back to the table. She had never felt more sober in her entire life. She hated it. She was never a huge drinker, and didn’t anticipate that trend changing just because it was suddenly legal for her to do so, but the battle her heart and brain waged was beginning to take its toll on her. All she wanted to do was crawl into bed and sleep through the next 48 hours. She wanted to wake up in her dorm room in New York and chalk this whole trip up to being a bad dream—a cautionary tale about the perils of giving into temptation.
Her eyes locked on to Maya’s as she slowly approached the table. She wrapped her arms around her body as a shiver rippled through her.
As soon as Maya saw Riley, she stood up and quickly made her way toward the quaking brunette. “Riley?” When Maya reached her, she rubbed Riley’s arms in an attempt to warm her up. “You’re freezing. Are you ok?”
Riley shook her head. She was the complete opposite of ok. How did everything get this complicated? She just wanted to go out and have some fun and now she wasn’t even sure which way was up anymore.
“What happened?”
Riley shook her head once more. She didn’t want to talk about it, not now anyway. “Maya, I-I need…I…” She looked all around them. What she was in search of, she didn’t even know. She suddenly wanted to claw through her own skin, shed herself of her own body and simply float away. This was all too much right now.
As her frantic eyes continued to search the room, she spotted him. He was seated at the main bar, and he wasn’t alone. He wasn’t with the same woman as before, but it was another blonde woman and she wasn’t alone either. A brunette woman had her arm looped through the blonde’s as they giggled at something Lucas said. Riley felt a fresh batch of tears sting her eyes as her mouth fell open.
Maya furrowed her eyebrows together when she noticed anguish slowly seep into Riley’s eyes. “Riley? Riley, what is it? Do we need to leave?”
Riley blinked several times as she stared at the three people who didn’t seem to have a clue that they were being watched. Lucas seemed completely unfazed by their earlier conversation. He laughed at something the blonde woman said, and made no move to remove the hand that the brunette woman had placed on his arm. Riley’s throat ran dry as the blonde slid onto the barstool on the other side of him. He was perfectly nestled between both girls now.
What a happy little threesome they seemed to be.
The agony Riley felt when she stood outside rapidly faded. Her desire to finish their conversation evaporated as she watched him take a sip of his scotch. From where she stood, their conversation was over and he seemed more than content enough with the outcome.
She’d be damned if she’d ever allow him to see how deeply he had gotten underneath her skin and into her heart. If he was about to fulfill his quest to bring multiple women back to the suite, then she was hell bent on doing what she had set out to do the entire night—not think and not second-guess a single move she made.
But first, she needed to reclaim the buzz she had before she stepped outside with him.
“No,” she finally answered as she turned back to Maya. She wiped her eyes. “I want to stay. I-Is my makeup ok?”
Maya wiped underneath Riley’s eyes to get rid of the slightly smudged eyeliner. “Yeah. You’re fine. Why? Riley, if you’re upset, then maybe we should—“
“Drink,” she offered even though she knew that wasn’t what Maya had in mind.
“No. Maybe we should call it a night?”
Riley shook her head. “No,” she answered as a slow smile tugged at the corners of her lips. “The night’s only just begun.” She glanced at the bar. “I just need to find my buzz again.”
Maya was grateful that Riley’s master plan only seemed to consist of more vodka and dancing. She had no idea what had transpired during Riley’s dance with Lucas, and while she wanted nothing more than to lock both of them in a closet and let them duke it out, she also knew that tonight wasn’t the best time to do it. Everyone was intoxicated and she knew that Riley’s emotions were at an all time high.
Although Riley had taken to dancing with any guy who showed a remote interest in her, Maya knew that it could only go so far as long as she were nearby. She was grateful that Zay and Farkle had joined them a few songs in. Initially, Farkle had only shown up to give them each another drink, but Riley insisted that he stay with them and dance for at least a few songs. She batted those beautiful brown eyes and told him that all she wanted for her birthday was to dance with her friends. Farkle never stood a chance. Her entire group of friends always ended up giving in when she pouted.
Maya noticed that not once since they hit the dance floor did Riley look back at Lucas. She considered it a small victory. She wanted nothing more than to see Riley and Lucas give it a shot, but she also knew nothing good would come out of a drunken conversation right now. They had a lot to work through and discuss. If they could make it through tonight, then maybe, just maybe, they would be able to work it out when their heads were a little clearer.
Riley laughed as she wrapped her arms around Zay’s neck and pressed her body against his. “Dance class has really paid off, huh,” she grinned as they moved to the beat of the club music.
“You all laughed at me in middle school, but it’s always been a lady magnet,” he answered a he focused on the best place to hold Riley. The last thing he wanted was to get in between whatever was going on with her and his best friend. Incurring the wrath of Lucas Friar was one thing he did not want to do tonight. He glanced over his shoulder as Maya cozied up behind him. He turned back to Riley as he gestured at the blonde behind him. “See? Total lady magnet.”
“You’re in the middle of a Riley and Maya sandwich,” Riley laughed as she wrapped her arms around Maya as the trio rocked to the beat of the moderately slow R & B song. “Do you know how many men would kill to be in your shoes right now?”
Zay chuckled nervously. She was right. He was nestled in between two beautiful women, and he knew damn well that if Lucas caught a glimpse of him right now that he might not live to see the sunrise. “I know of one guy who probably would like to kill me right now if he saw this.”
“Make way for me,” Farkle announced as he ducked in between Riley and Zay. The entire group laughed as Farkle slithered in between his friends.
“Farkle, I’m not that drunk yet,” Zay smiled before he spun around to dance with Maya. The genius was one of his best friends, but his dance moves could prove to be lethal. Farkle needed space to dance, and in his currently inebriated state, Zay wasn’t sure that he would understand that he only had a small space to work with.
Riley laughed as she placed her hands on Farkle’s shoulders. “Oh Farkle…how are you doing?”
“Pretty good right now,” he smiled as he placed his hands on her waist. He wasn’t really sure what he had been drinking or even how much he had. He had placed Zay in charge of everything he consumed since he had never been much of a drinker. “I can’t really feel my face right now.”
Riley’s eyes widened for a moment before she nearly doubled over in laughter. “Oh my God,” she snorted as she gasped for air. He couldn’t feel his face? She had never been that drunk in her life. That couldn’t possibly be normal, could it? “I am so not on your level yet, Farkle.”
“Try me,” he grinned. “I’m not kidding.”
“So, you can’t feel this?” She lightly touched his cheek.
He shook his head. “Not at all!”
She tapped his cheek as her smile widened. “And that?”
He shrugged. “Nope.”
She lightly smacked his cheek. “Still nothing?”
He laughed. “Not a thing.”
“Wow.” She was more than a little impressed. Maybe she should get Zay to dictate the rest of her drinks for the night? She moved her hand back down to his shoulder. “If you were ever going to get into a fight, tonight would be the night to do it, Farkle. Only…please don’t do that because then the night would be over and I’m having way too much fun to get kicked out of this club.” She spun around before she placed her hand over top of his as she moved her hips from side to side. “I love that you’re dancing right now,” she called out over her shoulder to him. She couldn’t remember the last time she had been able to dance with him. It had to have been high school.
“I told you guys that I would loosen up once we got here tonight,” he called out from behind her.
“I know, but I haven’t seen you have fun in a long time.” She spun back around to face him as the song ended.
He shrugged as a more upbeat song began to play. “Comes with the territory, I guess.” He leaned in to speak directly into her ear as the DJ increased the volume of the music. “I know you wanted this trip and it was your idea, but I needed it. I needed to spend time with you guys…get out of New York for a few days.”
Riley frowned at his words. He never talked about the breakup—not since the night it happened. She turned her head to speak in his ear. “Does it hurt? Seeing places that you shared with her day after day?”
He nodded. “Not as much as it used to, but sometimes I’ll walk past a coffee shop or restaurant or even somewhere that we only went to once, but I’ll think about her and it’s like…it’s like I can’t breathe.” He sighed. It was the worst form of torture he could possibly think of. “For six months I felt so claustrophobic everywhere I went. I thought I was going crazy.” He rubbed the back of his neck. “Maybe I am.”
“That’s how you know it was real. I know it doesn’t help anything, but we’re here for you. We’re all here for you, Farkle.”
“You know, the worst part is that…she’s gone. She’s still in the city, but Riley, she might as well be in another country. I haven’t talked to her since it happened…I don’t know if we’ll ever be able to be friends again.”
Riley nodded slowly. It made sense. Even in her muddled thoughts, it all made perfect sense. Her heart broke when he called her that night and told her that Smackle broke up with him. There wasn’t any build up or longstanding issue between them. She simply told him that her feelings for him had changed and while she wasn’t sure how or in what way, she needed to take some time for herself to figure it all out. Six months later and Farkle hadn’t heard a word from her. “So you not only lost someone you loved, but you also—“
“I lost my best friend.”
Riley’s eyes scanned the club. She couldn’t see much of anything past the dance area. Was he still here? Had he already left with those girls? She had easily been on the dance floor for half an hour, maybe longer than that. As Farkle’s words echoed through her hazy mind, her heart ached. Her brain was winning the battle, despite the fact that she had subconsciously turned off both organs the moment she saw Lucas with those women.
It wouldn’t take her long to find out where he was. As the small group made their way back to the table, she spotted Lucas, the blonde woman, and the brunette woman at their table with Asher and Dylan. Instead of sitting down or even acknowledging the strangers who seemed to be latched onto him, Riley headed directly toward the bar. The conversation with Farkle still rang in her ears as she ordered a shot. As soon as she downed it, the bartender smiled at her. “You’re the birthday girl, right?”
She cringed as her throat burned. She nodded as she sat the glass back down. “Yeah, I’m Riley. And you are?”
“Mark,” he smiled. “Listen, I know this might sound a little weird, but are you willing to help us out with something? I can guarantee you that you’ll have fun and you won’t have to pay for another drink tonight.”
She raised her eyebrows. She came here to have a memorable birthday. Judging by the smile the bartender gave her, she knew that she had to do whatever it was he wanted her to do. She needed some fun. “Mark, you had me at fun. What do you need me to do?”
Lucas looked up at the bar as he watched one of the bartenders whisper in Riley’s ear. When he saw her laugh in response, his jaw twitched. He couldn’t stand this. The air around them felt so thick. How was she able to laugh and carry on like this when the entire future of their already fragile friendship seemed so uncertain? He reluctantly looked away from her when he heard the cackling of the brunette seated next to him. Why did Dylan insist on inviting them back to their booth? He had hoped to pawn the women off on Asher and Dylan and kill two birds with one stone, but Dylan didn’t quite get the hint that Lucas had no interest in either woman. How could he when the one woman he wanted was so close, yet so far away from him?
He hated the way they left things outside. He hated that he stalked off, but he was so frustrated and so mad that she would think, for even a second, that if they became something more, that he would eventually end it. Somewhere in the back of his mind, he knew that he had earned the reputation he had for a reason, but she didn’t know the whole story.
“Why is she standing on top of the bar,” Zay suddenly asked as he watched one of the bartenders help Riley climb on the bar.
“Seriously?” Maya stood up as she turned toward the main bar. “I thought she was only going to get a drink…not let the whole world see up her dress,” she groaned as she watched Riley run a hand through her hair.
Lucas snapped his head up to look at Maya. “Excuse me?” He turned his head toward the brunette. Sure enough, Riley Matthews had climbed on top of the bar. Apparently the members of their table weren’t the only ones to notice as a group of guys crowded around her.
Maya glared at the back of Lucas’s head before she walked toward Riley. The others followed closely behind.
“Tonight at Hyde, we are very fortunate to help celebrate this beautiful woman’s 21st birthday!” Mark gestured to Riley who grinned when the crowd cheered. “And she has so graciously decided to help us deliver a round of shots for anyone who might be interested. It’s an apple pie shooter and the way it’s gonna work is that Amber will pour some apple juice into your mouth. After that, I’ll come by and add in some vodka, then Miss Riley over here will top it off with a dab of whipped cream!”
“Well,” Farkle smirked as he watched the bartender hand Riley a can of whipped cream, “She said she wanted to have fun tonight.”
“She’s making memories that she might not actually be able to remember tomorrow.” Zay glanced at Lucas. He could practically feel the anger and jealousy billowing from his best friend. At least that anger couldn’t possibly be directed at him.
As Mark grabbed a bottle of house vodka, he gestured to the area around them. “So, line up around the bar if you want one. First come, first served!”
“I don’t know about you guys,” Maya smirked as she slid up to the middle of the bar, “But I’m getting a free shot.” She couldn’t believe what was happening, but she had to admit that it would definitely make one hell of a story. Riley Matthews was serving whipped cream to a bunch of strangers on her 21st birthday. As she heard Riley laugh, Maya figured that maybe doing something a little crazy like this could be good for her. She had played it safe for her entire life. She was due for a semi-wild night—as long as it didn’t involve some sort of exchange of bodily fluids with a random stranger.
Most of the group followed Maya’s lead as they stood in front of the bar.
Lucas didn’t want to do it, but he knew there was no way she would willingly climb down and forget the whole thing. If he could prevent her from spraying whipped cream into just one stranger’s mouth, then he’d stomach what was sure to be a disgusting shot. Instead of lining up with the rest of his friends, he moved to the end of the bar. If he had any luck, he would be the last one. If he had a little more than luck—and if his brain hadn’t been completely thrashed by the jealousy he knew he’d have by watching her doing this—then maybe he could get her attention long enough to apologize for running away from her earlier.
He watched her slowly bend down to spray the whipped cream in the first few guys’ mouths. Lucas noticed that there were a few women by the bar, but most of the patrons consisted of guys—guys he knew couldn’t wait to get their chance to hit on Riley. Lucas’s focus never wavered as she moved from person to person. She laughed when she saw Maya and the guys about midway through her trek around the bar. After she squeezed some of the contents of the can into the blonde’s mouth, she kissed her cheek. Both girls giggled as Maya swallowed the shot.
Lucas noticed that Riley seemed to be getting more and more into what she was doing as she skipped down the line. He clenched his fist as she slowly slid her index finger down Asher’s cheek before she squeezed the whipped cream into his mouth. Did she know he was watching her? Was she purposefully trying to drive him insane with jealousy?
It was a great exercise in patience and test of his growth as a person to watch her casually flirt with about twenty-five random strangers. It felt like an eternity had passed by the time she reached him. Luckily, their friends had retreated back to the table, as had most of the other people who had gotten a shot.
As he opened his mouth for the apple juice and vodka, he wondered if she even noticed that he was there. As the two bartenders turned back to make drinks for the crowd that awaited them, Riley’s eyes finally locked onto his.
She was surprised to see him. She thought that if he had wanted a shot, he would have been lined up with the rest of their friends and the two girls he had been with for nearly an hour. She had never been so tempted in her life to drown the two women in whipped cream, but she managed to avoid a murder charge as she breezed by them. Now, as she looked down at Lucas, she wasn’t so sure she’d be as successful with him. She crouched down as she tucked a piece of hair behind her ear. She wasn’t sure that she had ever been this angry with him. It was new territory for her, but she gladly welcomed it compared to the agony she felt when she first saw him with the two girls. “Thanks for proving my point by walking away earlier,” she snarled before she sprayed the substance into his mouth.
Lucas swallowed the shot the moment she began to spray the cream into his mouth. He thought for sure she would try to use up whatever was left in that can on him in an attempt to cover him in the frothy concoction. While she did end up giving him more whipped cream after he swallowed, it wasn’t nearly enough to make him choke on it.
As she turned to leave, all thoughts of an apology escaped him. He wanted to apologize, but he couldn’t remember the speech he had formulated as he watched her dance around the bar. So, he acted completely on instinct when he grabbed her arm and gently tugged her back down to him. He lifted his head slightly as his lips met hers in a searing kiss.
The first thing Riley could taste was the whipped cream in his mouth. She was shocked that he had pulled her to him, but as she felt his tongue slip into her mouth, her anger melted into an unbridled passion that she had no idea how to subdue.
When she heard herself moan into his mouth, she snapped herself out of her daze. She pulled back from him without saying a word and turned to the bartenders. “Is that it,” she asked as she wiped a little bit of the whipped cream from her mouth.
“Not quite,” Mark smiled. “It is your birthday, and what good is a birthday without a birthday cake?”
Riley smiled as she spun around to see one of the other bartenders bring a cake over to her table. She quickly climbed down from the counter as she walked over to the chocolate cake lit up with sparkler candles. Lucas trailed several feet behind her as her friends sang “Happy Birthday” to her.
She pushed the brief interlude with Lucas to the back of her mind as she looked at the friends who surrounded her. This was the moment she knew she’d remember for the rest of her life. She had made it to twenty-one. She had no clue what the future held, but if this group of people remained in her life, she knew she’d be ready for anything.
After the song was over, Riley closed her eyes as she made a wish. Her wishes over the last eight years hadn’t changed, but this one was slightly different. It still centered on the Texan she had just kissed, but instead of wishing to be with him, she wished for some sort of sign to know what to do, whether to let go or to hang on. She pulled her hair back as she leaned over and blew out the candles.
Everyone around her cheered as she raised her head back up. “This is so incredible,” she happily smiled as she sat down in the booth. She turned to Farkle. “It’s perfect, Farkle. The place, the cake…everything.” She glanced around the club. “You know…if I had to pick anywhere in Vegas to celebrate my 21st, it would have been here…the fountains, the dancing, the ambience…it’s perfect.”
He smiled. “I wish I could take the credit for it, but I can’t.”
She frowned. “What are you talking about?” She thought Farkle had planned the entire trip out. If he didn’t set all of this up, then who did?
Farkle searched the club for his friend. He couldn’t believe that after everything, Lucas missed the cake being brought out, especially after how specific he had been about where and what cake to get. “I thought for sure he would have told you, but it makes sense why he didn’t. He’s not one to really brag, but…Lucas set up the whole thing.”
Riley glanced at Maya before she looked back at Farkle. “What are you talking about?”
“I had no idea where to even begin to look for a place. Lucas told me that he wanted to plan your birthday celebration. He’s the one who booked the table here, got us all into VIP, and he even picked out the cake.”
“He planned it?”
Farkle nodded. “I thought I knew you better than anyone…well, except for Maya, but…I think Lucas beat me on this one. This place screams Riley to me.”
Just then, Lucas walked around the table as he sat down at the other end of the booth. Riley couldn’t help but to stare at him. He planned the whole night? How did he pay for this? Riley didn’t even want to think about how much it all must have cost him.
She watched as the two girls she still didn’t know the names of turn their attention away from Dylan and back to Lucas. As she reached for the drink Maya ordered for her while she was on the bar, her inebriated brain began to weigh her options. On the one hand, she could continue to ignore him to the best of her ability and watch him accomplish the mission he had set out for himself at the beginning of the night—or—maybe she could be the mission.
As the vodka slipped past her lips, she figured that it would actually be pretty poetic to lose her virginity to him in Las Vegas on her 21st birthday. He had been her first everything—first date, first kiss, first boyfriend, first love. Why not complete the circle? Why couldn’t she be the hookup he craved tonight? It was only sex, right? If she could keep her heart silent, then maybe it would actually help her begin to move on. Maybe they wouldn’t be physically compatible? Maybe this was the first step to letting go?
She smirked as she continued to consume the contents of her glass. There wasn’t enough liquor in the world to convince her that sex with Lucas wouldn’t be good. A few heated kisses told her everything she needed to know about their physical compatibility. Still, she was feeling completely light and free. Maybe she needed one night of passion with him in order to finally close the door on her first love.
Once she finished the drink, she slowly stood up and walked to the other end of the booth.
Lucas’s attention immediately shifted to Riley the moment she stood up. He was more than a little surprised when she stopped right in front of him. He had no idea what to expect. Was she going to yell at him in front of everyone? Was she going to get back on the bar and do something else that would surely test his self-control?
“Hey Huckleberry,” she smirked as she casually drummed her fingers on top of the table. “Are we dancing or what?”
He knit his eyebrows together in confusion. He knew that he must have misheard her. She wanted to dance with him? After their argument outside and after everything that had transpired between them in the last 24 hours, she actually wanted to dance with him?
“It is my birthday.” Her smile never wavered as she watched him reach for his drink. She raised one inquisitive eyebrow at him as she waited for him to finish drinking the amber substance in his glass.
Lucas finished off his scotch and sat the glass down next to her hand before he looked back up at her. “Lead the way.”
He thought for sure that she would take him to where she had spent the better part of the night with most of their group. Instead of going to the dance floor, she led him back outside, back to their hidden corner, back into the darkness. Only a few people mingled outside, as the temperature must have dropped another five degrees in the hour since they were last out there. Riley felt a chill ripple through her as soon as she stepped outside, but she didn’t care. This was the only place she knew of that they could have a little bit of privacy. They were nowhere near the music, although they could still hear the bass beat as clear as day.
Riley didn’t say a word as she spun around and placed his hands on her waist.
“Riley, what are you doing?”
She wrapped her arms around his neck. “I don’t want to talk.” She knew that this would go a lot better if neither of them said a word. Every time one of them opened their mouths, they ended up in some ridiculous fight. If they could just somehow float together, let things happen naturally without having to discuss the past or what it all meant, then maybe they could work this out without a fight.
“What do you want to do?” Lucas swallowed as he stared at her. He had no idea what was going through her mind. She didn’t want to talk. That was fair enough. Every conversation they attempted in the last 24 hours was disastrous to say the least. He never wanted to ruin her birthday. If she wanted to dance with him in silence, then he would take that time trying to commit every millisecond of it to his memory.
“Have fun. Not think.” She shrugged her shoulders as she glanced at the fountains for a moment before she looked back at him. “I’ve spent the first twenty one years of my life thinking about every move I made…doing the right thing…saying the right things.” She shook her head. “I don’t want to do any of that tonight.” She was tired of having to be perfect all the time. She was tired of her brain stopping her from doing the things she wanted to do.
He sighed. Despite the canyon between them, he knew who she was. He had always known. “And what happens tomorrow when you wake up?” She was saying all of this now, but he knew that once she sobered up, she would regret it if she did something completely reckless.
She shrugged. “I don’t want to think about that.” Didn’t he understand? She wanted to give into her emotions for once. Maya always led with her heart while Riley had always led with her brain. Leading with her brain had only made a huge mess of everything, so why couldn’t she simply give into her feelings for one night? What was so terrible about that?
“But I do.” He wanted to step back from her. He wanted to remove his hands from her waist and go back inside, but he couldn’t. He wasn’t strong enough to separate himself from her right now. He was a man who had been starving for a third of his life over the woman who stood before him. At this second, he was holding the only thing he had ever really wanted. He couldn’t let go. Maybe if he was a little more sober, he could. Maybe if she wasn’t looking at him in the way he had always wanted her to, he could let her go and walk away.
“You’re not pulling away from me,” she murmured as she stepped forward and pressed her body against his. She lowered her right hand to the nape of his neck as her fingertips brushed through his hair. She bit her bottom lip as her eyes lowered to his lips.
“I need to,” he groaned as she leaned forward to kiss his cheek. The alcohol in his system worked against him as he felt himself slowly give into whatever she wanted to do. He knew that he was wrapped around her finger, but he never knew how much until tonight. He’d die to try to give her the world if she wanted it. He’d move heaven and earth for her if she asked him to.
“You don’t need to do anything,” she responded softly before she began to plant open-mouthed kisses along his jawline.
Lucas felt his earlier anger dissipate with every connection her lips made to his skin. It wasn’t fair. None of this was fair. Every single emotion he had felt tonight was placed into extremes. He was certain he had never been angrier with someone in his entire life, but at the same time, he knew that he had never loved her more. It wasn’t just the fact that she was stirring up every single hormone he possessed, but it was the fact that for the first time ever, he finally realized that she wanted him just as badly as he wanted her.
He swallowed as she moved her attention to the other side of his neck. He craned his neck back and stifled a moan as she scraped her teeth against the base of his neck. He was rapidly becoming putty in her hands. Whatever she wanted, he was prepared to give her. Anything—everything. He just had to know that she wanted him and only him.
Finding some inner strength that he didn’t know he possessed, he slowly moved his hands up to her shoulders as he nudged her back slightly.
Confused, Riley lifted her head. “Isn’t this what you want?”
The way her eyes had darkened nearly set off an explosion in the Texan’s mind. Dear God, he knew that no matter how much alcohol he consumed, he would never forget the way she looked at that exact moment. Her cheeks were slightly flushed, her breathing had become slightly labored, and the way she pursed her lips immediately made a certain body part of his throb in sheer anticipation. He knew he had to maintain his composure for at least another minute. He had to know she really wanted this and she wouldn’t claim it was some drunken mistake tomorrow. “Is it what you want?”
She smiled as she slowly, purposefully so, closed the space between them once more. “Yes,” she purred as her lips quickly covered his. She wanted to silence him before he had a chance to think, a chance to ruin whatever moment they could have together.
Lucas felt most of his remaining defenses slip away as her fingers slowly danced down his chest. As her tongue slipped into his mouth, his hands slid up her back as he quickly guided them further into their little oasis.
As soon as her back hit the wall, she shoved one of his hands down to her thigh. “I want to feel your hands all over me,” she murmured as she hooked one of her legs around his waist. She smashed her lips to his once again as she wanted nothing more than to feel him explore her entire body.
He squeezed her thigh as her tongue met his once more. When she moaned into his mouth, he felt the last shred of ‘Lucas the Good’ slip away. Somewhere in the back of his mind, he knew that while whatever they were doing was completely and utterly right, the timing of it and the location of it was not at all how he had imagined it. Still, the alcohol in his system and eight years of dreaming about the woman in his arms night after night tipped the scales into Lucas the not-so-Good’s favor. When she placed his hand on her thigh and told him that she wanted his hands all over her, he nearly took her right then and there. As soon as she moaned into his mouth, ‘Lucas the Good’ ceased to exist all together. His hand slowly crept up her thigh. He knew that if she didn’t want this, she would push his hand down, pull away from him and tell him that they were going too far.
But she didn’t. As her nails scraped across his back, she wiggled against him in a desperate attempt to get his fingers toward their destination quicker. She needed to feel him. She needed him to touch her in a way that no one else had before.
Up until that moment, Lucas didn’t know that his brain possessed an off switch. As his fingers slowly disappeared under her dress, Riley whimpered in sheer anticipation. How many times had he dreamt about them like this? How many times had he woken up and taken a cold shower because the woman he fantasized about wasn’t next to him?
“Please,” she murmured desperately in between kisses. “I want you to. I need you to.” Goose bumps peppered her entire body as she felt his fingers graze the outside of her underwear. “Please, Lucas.”
All he wanted to do was to make her happy and to make her feel good. She wanted this. He wanted this. As he opened his eyes, he noticed that hers were already opened as they continued to kiss one another. He looked for a sign of hesitation, any indication that it was merely the alcohol talking and not something she really wanted. It was the only thing that could possibly hold him back from doing this. A small smile tugged at the corner of her lips as she lightly bit his bottom lip. “Please,” she begged once more.
At that moment, no one on Earth could have resisted her.
She gasped as soon as she felt his fingers slide into her underwear. She dug her nails further into his back when his lips reclaimed hers while his fingers slowly explored a new uncharted territory. Was this real? As his fingers paid homage to her most private of regions, Riley sighed into his mouth. God, it felt so much better than she imagined, and it wasn’t even the real thing. Her entire body felt completely electrified by his motions. As insanely wonderful as it felt, she wanted more. This was becoming an addiction. He was becoming an addiction. She had to have more of this. She had to have more of him.
Lucas wished that she had left with him earlier when he mentioned it. It was a mile and a half back to their hotel, but with traffic, it could easily take 20 minutes to get back to their suite. He wasn’t sure about her, but he knew he couldn’t wait that long. He wasn’t even sure they could make it to a room at the Bellagio at the rate they were going.
Riley couldn’t stand it anymore. She thought she could be placated with a tease, with a glimpse into a world that had been forbidden for so long, but it only made her demand more. She dragged her fingernails down the length of his back before she brought them in between their bodies. As she lowered her lips to his neck, her fingers grazed the outside of his pants.
He groaned the moment he felt her fingertips against him. Did she have any clue how close he was to taking her right then and there? All it would take is one word, one indication of consent and he would happily spend the rest of the night—the rest of forever—worshipping her like the goddess she was.
He used his free hand to run through her slightly tangled hair. As she lifted her head up, he pulled her face to his in a scorching kiss.
Lucas quickened his pace as his mouth desperately sought contact with hers. Riley could hear her heart race in her ears as the pressure within her began to build more and more rapidly. She wasn’t exactly sure how she was able to pull in any oxygen between the breath Lucas commanded and the fact that his ministrations had already labored her breathing. She felt like she could pass out at any moment from sheer pleasure. If she died right here, she would die the happiest woman in the world. She never wanted this feeling to end.
He kissed her with every single feeling she was giving him in return. A lethal combination of love, lust, anger, jealousy, and passion swirled within him as he desperately tried to tell her everything she was doing to him without ever saying a word. He was a man possessed. He couldn’t control anything anymore. “Tell me,” he commanded as he slid his lips across her bare shoulder. His free hand fell to her lower back in order to support her when she threw her head back and desperately gasped for air. “Tell me that I’m the only one you want. Tell me you don’t want him. Tell me, Riley,” he pleaded as his lips brushed against her collarbone. “Tell me that when we wake up tomorrow, we’ll be together.” He kissed his way toward the base of her neck as he waited for her answer.
Riley’s heart pounded even harder as she listened to his pleas. As her mind desperately tried to fight through the thick fog of alcohol and lust, she replayed his words again. Be together as in dating? Her mind raced as the logical side of her brain tried to dissect his words and the meaning behind them. She couldn’t do this right now. She was hammered. She told him that she didn’t want to talk. She didn’t want to make a life altering decision while they were intoxicated.
She thought this would be easy. She thought that maybe they could get whatever this was out of their system tonight—chalk it up to the city, to the alcohol, to being young. She knew that on some level, she had waited for him, had wanted him to be her first because he had been her first everything else and that maybe she could begin to move on if she got some sort of closure from the last seven years. She knew that at least for her, it wouldn’t be so simple to walk away, but maybe it would be for him. Maybe getting the tension out of the way could somehow pave the way for them to repair their friendship. At least, that was what the inebriated side of her had foolishly thought.
She closed her eyes a newfound embarrassment filled her. For one moment, she had successfully turned off her brain. For one moment, she led with something other than the sense that had kept Lucas Friar at arm’s length for a third of her life. In one foolish moment of weakness, she might have just wrecked an eight-year friendship.
She slowly opened her eyes when she felt his lips slowly pull away from her neck. They weren’t on the same page at all. She knew that couldn’t risk this anymore than she already had. Her body still cried out for him, but her mind had finally taken control once again. She thought she could give into this for one night, but she wasn’t that kind of girl. She never was. “I can’t,” she answered weakly as she braced herself for the fallout she knew she deserved.
It felt like a bucket of cold water had been dumped on the Texan. He felt completely paralyzed as the weight of those two words fell on his shoulders. She had driven him completely insane. He never would have allowed things to get this far between them if he thought that she didn’t want to be with him when morning came. As he slowly pulled away from her, it felt as if a thousand knives had penetrated his heart. He couldn’t do this anymore. He couldn’t be around her while he was still in love with her. If the last seven years were any indication, he knew that trying to get over Riley would be nearly impossible. As he shoved his hands into his pockets, he knew that he had to get away from her, but first, before he threw himself off a cliff, he had to know why. “Why,” his voice cracked with the weight of emotion that flowed through his heart, “Why is it so hard for you to understand that I want to be with you?”
Riley slid her dress back down before she wrapped her arms around herself. She wanted to tell him it was because of what she had overheard earlier that night, but the real problem extended beyond that. “Because,” her voice shook, “it was so easy for you to accept what I told you we were and move on.” She looked down. “If you did it back then, I know that you’ll do it now.”
“But I didn’t accept it!” His eyes widened as he waited for her to say something else. Was there no other reason than the stupid label that she put on them when they were in middle school? “Don’t you get it, Riley? Everything that’s happened since then has been because of this ridiculous idea you got into your head that Maya and I liked one another.”
She cut her eyes up at him. “Didn’t you? Even for just a second?”
“No!” He shook his head as he tried to pull himself together long enough to explain to her what actually went on in his confused fifteen year old mind. “I thought that…that maybe there was…or that there could be…but I realized later that I only thought about that after you told us there was something there.” He scoffed when she said nothing in response. “Do you not understand that Maya and I only dated because the person we loved the most in this world told us that we had to see how we felt about one another? I’ve been chasing you ever since then.” He shook his head as he looked away from her. This was completely ridiculous. Was he supposed to pay for her decision for the rest of his life?
Riley furrowed her eyebrows. “What did you say?”
His eyes fell to the ground. “I’ve been chasing you, Riley.” Was she going to laugh in his face? Was she going to completely pulverize the last shred of hope he had for them?
She shook her head. “Before that.”
He took a moment to think about what he had actually revealed to her. When his words came back to him, he realized that after seven years, he finally told her how he felt. As he lifted his gaze, he knew that he had never intended for it to come out like that. He had always imagined some huge romantic reveal—something that would rival the white horse he rode in the gymnasium at John Quincy Adams Middle School—but perhaps some of the purest moments didn’t need to come with pomp and circumstance. Maybe they were best received when spoken from the heart, even if it’s outside of a club at 2:00 in the morning. “Maya and I only went out because the person we loved the most in this world told us that we had to see how we felt about one another.”
Riley was convinced that the entire earth was currently spinning at a rate that would perplex scientists for the rest of eternity. She swallowed in a desperate attempt to ensure that her voice didn’t shake when she finally asked him the most important question she had ever asked anyone. “You loved me?”
“Yes!” He looked all around them as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. Had she not been listening to anything he had said or done in the last 24 hours? Could she not see it before then? Did she never suspect how destroyed he was over what happened to them in middle school? Did she never catch on to the fact that his gaze always seemed to stay on her no matter where they were, who they were with, or what they were doing? Did the woman before him have zero clue that he not only wanted to give her the world but that she had been his entire world for the last eight years? “I loved you then,” he finally declared. As she lifted her eyebrows in surprise, he realized that she really had no idea what he had sacrificed just to be able to continue to orbit around her. “I love you now,” he confessed. She had to know. She had to see that this wasn’t some random hookup to him. She had to know that this was the culmination of seven years of emotional repression. “I never stopped loving you, even for a second…even though you told me that you only saw me as a brother.”

CanvasWatches: The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan
In the fine tradition of the Franchise and also my viewing of it, we’re skipping Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya[1] and moving straight to The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan, which inexplicably maintains the name order for the title.
I am often confused by Japanese names in media that’s been localized. Character names are often obvious, because speech and grammar and context makes it clear whether its the given name or family name being used by the speaker, but I’m not always clear with credits. Do publishers switch the author’s name on the book, or do they maintain it?[2]
I’m not actually sure how I want names ordered in dubs, while we’re going through this tangent. I view both arguments (Accuracy to the original text vs. Approachability to new audiences) as largely equal, so as long as the text maintains consistency, I’m satisfied.[4]
However, the actual show switches the names, making it inconsistent with the title. Poor showing, Funimation.
As for the subject of today's review, the conclusion is: I liked it! Maybe one should view it as a continuation on the rest of Haruhi Suzumiya to better catch the jokes and nods, but it’s not necessary.
Onto the analysis! (Spoilers for all of Haruhi Suzumiya, though I will try and avoid major plot points not in Yuki-chan itself.)
Right off the bat, Yuki-Chan fixes the greatest sin committed by the original source material: Yuki gets to keep her glasses!
Let there be rejoicing! Yay! Woo!
In fact, glasses are used as a subtle narrative device, making them a required prop.
The anime is adapted by a comic written by Puyo, who also created the Haruhi-chan comics that were adapted into animation themselves. Haruhi-chan was an extensively goofy version of the Haruhi canon, and includes its own ongoing interpretation of the plot and characters.
Yuki-chan sits in a comfortable midpoint between realistic and cartoonish, with a good balancing of tone, and brings elements from both Haruhi-chan and Nagaru Tanigawa’s source novels. The comedy’s good, the drama’s good, and it flows well between them.
The setting itself comes from one of my favorite ways to find inspiration: looking at the throw-away details of other narratives, and exploring the logical extreme.
In this case, what is it like in the other world created for The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya?[5] What stories can be told when you grab Haruhi, strip her of god powers, and set her over there, and settle everyone else into normal human forms?
This is an exercise I think writers should take more often. It’s a common trope in fanfiction for a reason.[6] Stories are often built from extraordinary people in extraordinary circumstances, but good characterization should prevail even if you take away the magic and monsters, and set everyone in a coffee shop. How do Yuki and Kyon get along when they aren’t saving the world?
And, more interestingly, who is Yuki when she’s no longer a Humanoid Interface for the Data Overmind?[7] Because it’s equally valuable to consider what changes when you remove elements from characters.
What does change is Yuki becomes the shy, bookish (well, video game playing) girl that would be her common trope. But she’s also oddly voracious in regards to food, and has her share of quirky behaviors to match those of, say, Tsuruya.
This version of Yuki is also notably the first Moe character to actually appeal to me. I am invested in Yuki, and want her to succeed!
Because one of the opening conceits is a lack of Haruhi, (at least initially. Ms. Suzumiya does, of course, always find a way) Yuki’s literary club doesn’t get forcibly hijacked into the SOS Brigade, though it is at risk of closure due to lack of members. Also, as a nice meta gag, the production team’s name has been switch from ‘SOS Brigade’ in the closing credits to ‘North High Literary Club’.[7]
When we open the series, only Yuki and Kyon from the original cast are immediately present, along with Ryoko Asakura, who originally only existed long enough to attack Kyon with a knife and be deleted by Yuki, so as to show off what sort of power and danger Yuki and her contingent presents.
Since there is no Data Mind, Ryoko gets to be a main character, and thus act as a major change to the dynamics we’re used to. She’s a lower energy member of the ‘enactors’ end of the cast. Motivated by her friendship by Yuki, and a caring individual, she is still one of the few characters able to stand toe to toe with Haruhi without risk of being swept up into something against her will.
Her element of wackiness, however, is gleefully displayed during the first episode when, while shopping for the Literary Club’s Christmas Party, the trio encounters Mikuru and Tsuruya, to continue making the most of characters that didn’t get to fully shine during Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, and someone needs to be pushing Mikuru into situations.
Tsuruya and Ryoko begin pitting Yuki and Mikuru against one another for Kyon’s affections, before competing against one another directly, forming a friendship, and pretty much enlisting Tsuruya and Mikuru into the literary club.
Luckily, Mikuru is allowed out of the love triangle for this story. She’s still the soft spoken eye candy, but even that element’s toned down. Honestly, Mikuru could’ve been cut without making much difference, but we do need the full brigade eventually.
No, this time the love triangle (still pointing into Kyon) is a fight between Yuki and Haruhi!
Haruhi rejoins the dynamic by leaping out of snow-covered bushes in a post-credits scene of episode two, then collapsing on the ground. In this reality, a lot of the big events remain, but the details are shifted so that fantastic elements are no longer required. Kyon was still present when Haruhi drew her message on school grounds, but he was present as his middle schooler self, it doesn’t lead to Haruhi’s god powers, and the lack of Future!Kyon means Haruhi isn’t inspired to go to North High, and instead enrolling at a Prep School stationed at the base of the hill.
It’s also notable that Haruhi attempted to recreate the event during the series, but this time it’s a ploy to capture Santa Claus[8], and drafted a passing Yuki into it. It takes both of them a while to realize this, as Yuki forgot her glasses, and it was dark at the time.
Obviously, Haruhi immediately sets about taking over the literary club, dragging in Itsumi (also at the Prep School, and hopelessly in love with Haruhi), closes the deal with recruiting Mikuru, and hits the other notes of the original canon.
However, this time Ryoko is there to prevent Haruhi totally running rampant. Which is likely for the best, since it’s supposed to be Yuki’s story. Which even Haruhi seems to realize at some level.
Because Haruhi’s clearly got a crush on Kyon, but he doesn’t remember the night in the courtyard. And, at the same time, Yuki’s very clearly interested (not that Kyon notices that either) and Ryoko makes it very clear that Yuki deserves her shot. After some Valentine's Day confusion, Haruhi pretty much silently concedes the competition to even the playing field with consideration of Yuki’s social anxiety.
The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-Chan could be divided into three arcs, following the interpersonal issues of three characters: Yuki, Other Yuki, and finally Kyon.
Yuki’s arc is more or less what I described above, as it also needs to introduce the cast. Yuki loves Kyon,[9] who is oblivious, because of course he is. Yuki has pretty severe Social Anxiety, however, and thus can not spit out her feelings, even while sharing a coat during a Christmas Party, or during Valentine's day, or during a club trip, even while being cheered on by the other club members.
Poor girl.
There’s the usual misunderstandings, fear of ruining a perfectly functional friendship, distractions by Ryoko and Haruhi, and plenty of ship teases.
Still, the stretch of episodes is filled with plenty of Haruhi-Chan style humor and chibified moments. I also found myself, in a rare instance, noticing the background music, which was all lovely.[10] It’s standard romance material, which isn’t a genre I usually seek out, so the first nine episodes were both fresh enough to me, and with well executed comedy.
Then, after the credits of episode Nine, Nagato is involved in a car accident. We don’t see the impact, so there’s just enough ambiguity not to make the audience question the results.
We do know Yuki’s glasses are knocked off and bent. Oh no!
But don’t worry, Yuki has a back up pair of glasses.
Also, she’s got some level of brain damage now, altering her personality to be very similar to the Yuki we know from past material. Thus enters Other Yuki. Marked by the slightly different glasses she wears.
Told you they’d be significant.
Thus we enter a more psychological and ponderous arc. Starting with an episode entitled ‘Someday in the Rain’.[11]
This Other Yuki has the memories of Yuki Nagato, of course, but feels a disconnect from them and her life from before the car accident. With that disconnect, her emotions are also gone, leaving a monotone and subdued character in. Her interests also turn from video games to books.
Or, in other terms, the Data Overmind Yuki. Though not really. I’ll come back to this.
She attempts to go undetected, living Yuki’s life, trying to leave it in the same shape as she found it.
Though it doesn’t work on her closest friend, as Ryoko asks ‘Who are you, and where is Yuki Nagato?’
Which is a very dramatic way to phrase that, Ryoko!
So, for a short spell, I theorised that maybe this is the Humanoid Interface Yuki stepping in for the period covered by Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya. However, they didn’t put in any other clues to that interpretation, and the healing process that gradually brings back Yuki makes it essentially untenable as a theory. This series is severed totally from the Prime Timeline.
Yuki explains her situation to Ryoko, who drags her to see a dang doctor, like, come on girl, that’s step one. The doctor confirms there’s no apparent damage, and that Yuki merely needs time to recover, including plenty of sleep.
Yuki continues to live the life of a High Schooler through exams, as Ryoko and Kyon worry over her out of earshot. They’re unsure how to feel about this Other Yuki, but resolve to do their best.
So, as Other Yuki narrates, we hear the story of a robot developing emotions and attachments, brought in by her healing, told over of the course of four episodes. This includes fearing what is essentially her death, as once she finishes healing, Other Yuki will be gone, replaced by her body’s original owner. Emotions are mixed for all involved, as of course they want their Yuki back, but they also grow attached to Other Yuki and don’t wish to see her go fully.
On what Other Yuki knows will be her last day, with only one sleep remaining, she spends time at a used book fair, then as much time with Ryoko as possible, before heading to the library to finish reading a book she checked out before she’s gone.
Once that’s done, one final task remains as sleep begins to come for her, she phones Kyon to confess her love. Also to ask him to return the book for her.
She’ll be dead in a minute, so why not?
Kyon races to meet with her before she’s gone, but finds a napping Yuki once he reaches the bench outside the library. Other Yuki is gone.
Which leaves the remaining episodes of the series to deal with the fallout of the situation. Ryoko, sad to see Other Yuki go, collects herself quickly and resumes her life. Yuki seems to have lost her memories from the period, and I don’t think anyone tells her what happened in the interim.
Kyon is unsure what to do, as he realizes he’d fallen in love with Other Yuki.
Further, Haruhi has to deduce the events, as exams had kept her and Koizumi away. She encourages Kyon to work through his confusion.
I hand the final arc to Kyon because the roles switch places from the first arc, with Yuki blissfully unaware of Kyon’s feelings as Kyon is overthinking everything. It’s an interesting turn around.
Eventually, during a festival, Kyon uses the sound of fireworks to cover up his own love confession, as a symbolic message to the Other Yuki, so that he can finally let go and move on.
Which leaves us in the stalemate we began with: Yuki loves Kyon, and Kyon is blissfully unaware, even though Other Yuki’s confession should be a hint.
And maybe it is, as we don’t get to see much more.
Honestly, I’d be satisfied if this is where the Anime Adaption remains. I know of the Manga, of course, but short of a second head injury, Other Yuki is not likely to return, and it’s her segment that gives weight and purpose to the series. We’ve told the story of both Yukis disappearing, so it’s complete in my mind.
I’d much rather the resources be put instead into continuing adapting the Haruhi Suzumiya books.
The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan works best as a companion to Melancholy, but I believe it’s strong enough on it’s own legs if you prefer. Yuki is an endearing character, the titular arc is a strong tale of melancholy (ha!), and it’s an enjoyable ride. So give it a go.

Kataal kataal.
[1] Funimation has secured the license, I’ve preordered it, it’ll come. [2] I’m mostly wondering about Isuna Hasekura’s[3] name, as I intend to use it for fun reference times. [3] Author of Spice & Wolf. [4] Nevertheless, Haruhi Suzumiya sounds better to my ear than Suzumiya Haruhi. That may be habit, though. [5] I am using the english title because that’s what I know it as. [6] Does Yuki-chan count as fanfiction? The lines blur! [7] Sneaking Yuki’s name into the credits would have cinched it, but, alas… [8] Possibly a nice nod to Kyon’s famous opening monologue. [9] Whose real name we still do not know, though this series explains how the nickname passed from his sister to others. [10] There’s a particular Jazz number that first crops up during the mall sequence in the first episode that recurs. I should probably search out that track… [11] Trying to use nostalgia of my favorite Haruhi episode to evoke an emotional response, eh? It worked.

Precuruary: Mahou Tsukai Precure
Finally, I review the series that seems to be the most hated Precure series, even more so than Doki Doki and Happiness Charge! I also reveal why I actually kinda like it....
“Asahina Mirai, a soon-to-be student in junior high, witnesses an object fall from the sky one night during spring break. Excitedly exclaiming that it could be a witch, Mirai sets off the next morning with her beloved toy teddy bear Mofurun to search the park. At the park, Mirai witnesses a girl soaring through the air on a broom. Excited and curious, Mirai barrages the girl with questions. The young witch introduces herself as Riko and explains that she's come to the "No Magic" World to search for certain objects. The two girls notice that they're wearing similar pendants. Meanwhile, Batty, a companion of Dokurokushe the Wizard of Darkness, appears in front of Mirai and Riko! Batty demands that Riko hand over the "Linkle Stone Emerald", which Riko herself had been looking for. To make things worse, Batty uses dark magic to create a monster known as a Yokubaru! Mirai, Riko, and Mofurun join hands. With the magic words "Cure Up RaPaPa!", their pendants shines a magical light over them! The legendary witches "Pretty Cure" are born!”
So, why does everyone seem to despise this series so much? Well, the main issue with this series is it’s writing and execution. The plot tends to throw some immature or just plain weird scenes at random and it seems like the writers just didn’t know what to do, so they just put whatever they thought was a good idea at the time. The plot is also a bit rushed and sadly, the characters suffer a lack of proper development. Put it short, the plot and the development is just a big mess. I heard it was because the writer and director kept clashing, like one wanted to something real dark and epic like Go! Princess and the other wanted it to stay cutesy and safe. I really wished they had stuck with the more darker route. I mean it’s a series about witches.Dark and witches go hand in hand together. The cutesy parts can get a little boring too for some folks, I didn’t mind it too much.
So, despite all that, why do I actually like it and even get a little defensive for it? Shouldn’t I hate it like I do Doki Doki and Happiness Charge? Well I’ll list my reasons in so is to be consistent, unlike the plot of Maho Tsukai.
1.) Kinda likable characters.
I will admit, while they’re not the most deepest or complex of characters, most of the MTP characters are pretty likable.
(Well okay, I said MOST, not all.)
I really do like Riko. Yeah, she can be snobby but this melts away rather fast and the way she does it, is very appropriate for her age. She’s a kid that wants to be more grown up, so she tries to look impressive. She’s has a lot of insecurities that come natural for someone her age and she acts a lot like how I expect a kid would act.
Which speaking of which, I feel like the three main trio are actually suppose to be in Elementary School, but they felt they needed to have them be in junior high. They don’t even look 13! They look more so 10 years old at the oldest but decided to changed it to 13 so is to fit with the other precure franchise. Come on, Toei! This franchise is aimed at elementary school kids anyway, we wouldn’t mind if you made them younger. Look at Cardcaptor Sakura and some of the older magical girls series. Some of the main cast in those are 10!
Anyway, I also like Ha-chan. Yes, she can be annoying at times, but I thought she was pretty cute and I really like her design as Cure Felice. She’s absolutely gorgeous in this form.
I also really enjoy some of the kids, teachers and staff members at the Magic School, especially Kochou. At long last we get a handsome male supporting character that is both useful, interesting, likable and not look like a creeper (Such as Joe from Doki Doki)! His relationship with Kushy is very sweet. Some question whether or not it’s gay. I kinda wonder myself. I would be lying if I said I didn’t see this, that’s for sure. It could be just a real firm friendship but well, you ship who you want.
Bad ass design too! Though I really question on why he’s wearing a lampshade for a hat....
Mofurun can be a little unsettling to me at times and get a little annoying with that baby like voice, but they did grew on me. (Yes, I see Mofurun as non binary because well, teddy bears don’t have reproduction organs) I like how Mofurun is useful in many other ways besides being the transformation device. Most fairies that aid with transformation, tend to fall flat when it comes to being useful in other ways. Mofurun can sense linkle stones and was willing to risk their life to protect the stones from getting in the wrong hands. That’s pretty solid for me. Go teddy!
Not to mention, but Mofurun as Cure Mofurun is just adorable! I wish that Mofurun was actually a witch doll with Cure Mofurun’s design. It would have been way cuter and well...None of the Cure Mofurun plushies would be over 40 bucks! (US dollars). Speaking of which...
2.) The Relationship Between Mirai and Mofurun
As someone that was really close to her stuffed animals, I kinda understand Mirai’s feelings towards Mofurun. In fact, I think most kids get the connection. It’s common for kids to love their toys, especially a toy given to them by someone really close to them. The belief of it gaining a personality is also a common thing kids like to do and also a belief in Japanese culture. The belief goes if you love something such as a toy or even an accessory so much, that object will gain a soul and that soul will protect you for loving it so much. (Same if you treat an object badly and the object hates you). It’s kinda silly but this is a nice touch to the culture and to childhood. Well Mirai is certainly not my favorite, she’s really bland on her own, the relationship with Mofurun is pretty cute and again, I can see a young kid having a close bond with their stuffed animal. When I was a kid, I use to pretend my stuffed animals had personalities too and especially loved this tiger plush, given to me by my grandma.
3.) This is short but the nods to old Precure series and designs.
The whole holding hands and use of attacks, even the speeches before the power up, are actually nods to old Precure series that also did this. It’s kinda nice of them contributing to older series.
The designs of the outfits, especially Sapphire and Over the Rainbow are really well done and the transformations are fun to watch. The animation can be a little mediocre but beautiful in the transformations and I’m glad they decided to just do mostly 2D animation this time, with only resorting to 3D in the endings.
4.) The Witch World and How They Convey Witches As A Whole.
This is what I think MTP does a lot better than Ojamajo Doremi. How they convey witches. Well they use the same similar tropes such as the pointy hats and the broom flying, the way they convey witches is kinda surprising and kinda respectful. Believe it or not, witches do exist in a way. They don’t fly on brooms and the magic isn’t as instant as shown in this series. I’m mainly talking about witches and connection towards nature, as well as some of the lore tied in.
In the Magical World, nature seems to be a major key element to the magic of witches, which is true to actual witch beliefs. From their wands coming from trees, to taking care of mystical animals and right down to how the Magical World is made, is direct tie in with the belief of witches.
In some lore, mainly Wiccan, there is a belief that there is a Goddess and horned king in charge of taking care of the world. Mother Rapapa and the Deustmas generals kinda seem to be a representation of that belief. I dunno if that was their main intention, but kudo points for adding in anyway, especially if it was.
I also like how witches in this world are just ordinary people that just happen to use magic as a passionate subject. That’s what I found inconsistent in Ojamajo Doremi. In Doremi, it seems like witches are not human. There’s not even wizards in their world. They’re in another one. They’re like some sort of weird creature not connected with people at all, since they can’t be found out by humans thus turn into frogs. Yet, somehow humans can become witches when given these magic jelly bean looking things.
Plus the designs of the witches in Doremi I found disrespectful and lazy! At least in Mahou Tsukai, witches and wizards are treated like their own person, with their own style. Yeah, they have the typical hats and such but they at least try to make them interesting. I also didn’t like how magic was given so easily in Doremi. With Mirai, she had to kinda prove herself that she was willing to put in effort to do magic. Yeah, it consisted of saying the magic words over and over, but at least it just wasn’t given to her like “Here some magic jelly bean things. Now you can do magic!” Part of the belief in witches is putting spiritual effort into the thing you desire. Doremi it seemed more like the magic was coming from the seeds, then themselves. As for Reiko, well, she comes from a line of strong witches so magic is born in her and she doesn’t get good in her magic until later.
5.) Deusmast Villains
Oh, come on, you knew this was coming! Deustmast generals are the best in the series. There the ones that caused some people to come back and watch this series again, especially Orba! They’re threatening, they’re smarter and they have great designs!
Fun fact is not only are these guys really cool but also may have from different beliefs, including from witches. Not only can they presumably be based on the horned king of Wiccan and possibly (though more obvious) the Muslim belief of Jin/genies, but also the belief that help create Halloween. In ancient times before people started really getting into religious beliefs, people turned to witches to help fight off monsters and demons that were said to appear mostly during Halloween. The witches would dress kids up in costumes, to confuse the monsters into thinking the kids are one of their own demon brethren. They would also use spells and incantations to fight them off.
I heard they were too scary for kids. Too scary my butt! DysDark villains were far from “cute” and went all out dastardly at times! If Precure starts getting lame villains because of that notion, it will be forever before we have a good series like Go! Princess! Threatening villains help create intensity, making you feel there’s more at stake for our heroes!
Either way, the Deusmast generals were certainly a lot better than the Idiot Trio. No, I refuse to call them “Dark Magicians”. That’s an insult to Dark Magician from Yugioh and I refuse to stoop that level!
Plus, come on. Orba is like the hottest character to come out of a magical girl series! He’s a package! He’s a book worm, he’s a hot without his glasses and when he powers up, he’s a hunk! It’s like 3 hot dudes in one! Who knew you could get such in a show aimed at kids! Plus, it’s said he’s based on the one wing angel and fallen angels. I believe that because he certainly looks like one. I always said his face is angelic and it is!
So, yeah, there’s a bit to like and appreciate from this series. Some people may disagree and if you’re one of them that’s fine. I can understand it. I’m a big fan of anything witch related as you can probably tell, so I’m usually forgiving. The only witch series I don’t like is The Familiar of Zero, mainly because I hated the main character and to some extend Doremi. I do like the idea of musical witches and they did convey what childhood is like real well, but the characters were annoying to me and again, I just didn’t like how the witches are represented in that series.
So, I do like Mahou Tsukai a bit actually. In fact, it’s become my second favorite series. I like it not as a good series but as a guilty pleasure. I appreciate what it was trying to do, quite a few characters are likable, just a bit under developed and the ideas put in it, is pretty interesting. Sadly, I have to judge this as a whole so I’m gonna have to rate it a bit low.
I give Mahou Tsukai Precure 4 and a half stars out of 10. My recommendation is for anyone that can enjoy a series that’s cute, with some nice ideas thrown in there and don’t mind that the plot can be a bit messy. Put it short, if you like cute guilty pleasures, you’ll like this fine. Some of the bad moments can be laughable especially some of the dialog. Just whatever you do, don’t watch episode 50. It’s pointless and this is coming from a fan. I rather like to believe that episode just didn’t exist.
If you’re looking for a series that is intense with a good story line, you’re better off skipping this whole series, but I do recommend it more than Doki Doki or Happiness Charge. At least it tries to stand out with some interesting characters and ideas. Those two series are just horrible and the only good idea of Happiness Charge was different precure from other countries.

desu2!!
desu 2 meta brings out the tl;dr beast in me b/c i’m always thirsty to talk excessively abt this game.
My favorite parent-child relationship
- i think otome and koharu win by default, tho io’s brief scene w/her mother and the background we get on her relationship w/her parents is v heart-wrenching. i love the way otome’s single mom status is depicted–it feels very nuanced and sympathetic, without shying away from the way having parenthood thrust upon her would realistically impact otome’s life and koharu’s. when otome mentions in tri arc that she misses being koharu’s mother, despite how selfish that would be (as it would come in exchange for her cousins’ lives), i teared up, ngl. koharu herself is also really precious, tho i wish we had a consistent appearance for her–it seems to change between vanilla desu 2, ds2a, and tri arc?
runner-up goes to airi and her dad, despite the fact that she thinks he’s dead. the dera-deka sub-arc is well-worth doing at least once, imo. it made me bawl, and it’s also necessary for 100% compendium completion.
My favorite sibling relationship
- can i say saiduq and the other septentriones? yamato and miyako are the only sibs we see onscreen (tho airi mentions having a little brother), but tbh, i’m more interested in miyako’s side than i am in yamato’s. what goes on in the septentriones’ minds–if they even have “minds” as people would perceive the concept–is fascinating to me, and i really wonder what saiduq thinks abt his former “siblings”. does he simultaneously pity and envy them for lacking his autonomy? does he see them as extensions of polaris’ will that deserve to be beaten down by humans? the denizens of the akasha stratum are one of my fav aspects of desu 2′s worldbuilding, so i’m always hungry for meta on them.
My favorite family relationship (other)
- airi and ronaldo in a found family situation……… i love the way their dynamic develops, w/neither one aware of how strong a connection they really share. i do wish we’d had more of them bonding over their memories of airi’s dad (which i’ve always hc’d as happening at least on egalitarian route), but seeing how similar the two of them really are is always cute. airi loves her gay uncle 2k17
My favorite friendship between two people
- uffff this is so hard b/c i like a lot of my ships b/c of their friendships…….. ig i’d make it a tie between hibiki + daichi and jp’s trio’s dynamic as a whole? even tho jp’s trio isn’t two people, haha. one thing i really like abt hibiki in comparison to like, every male protag ever, is that it’s p heavily implied that he’s not popular at all. the one thing ds2a did right was hibiki’s backstory, which i think still fits in w/gameverse!hibiki’s description as someone w/a “blank” past. his friendship w/daichi and the relationships he forms w/the main cast mean a lot more in the context of daichi really being his only close friend at the start of the game, imo. s/t i love abt hibiki + both daichi and io is that their friendships are based on equity, abt hibiki supporting the others and working w/them as equals to help them realize what wonderful ppl they are in their own right, rather than him being the ultra-charismatic authority who’s always Cool and in control. like, this is the guy who has such Serious dialogue options as “RAINBOOOOOOW!!” and “tell everyone yr gay for yamato”. hibiki being really isolated from most ppl aside from daichi feeding into his decision to pursue the human admin end of br is a meta for another time, ig.
jp’s trio’s various relationships are all v interesting, in terms of the spokes of the triangle and all three of them together. it’s really refreshing to see that kind of dynamic between adult women who are professionals–their bond feels a lot less?? transient than it might between yet another group of high schoolers. you get the sense that all three of them being adults is what lets their friendships bloom and be so important to them, as the people they were in high school are hardly the same people they are now. the event in tri arc where fumi and makoto take care of a fatigued otome and tell her that she can lean on them, too, really made an impact on me. all three of them play off of each other so well in a variety of settings, and it lends a v mature, multifaceted air to their dynamic. otome taking a different faction than fumi and makoto, and how different fumi and makoto’s own reasons for joining yamato are, is also worth mentioning in that the three of them aren’t always in agreement, and that’s a part of friendship, too.
My favorite friendship between a group
- team nagoya……… i’ll be the first to say that i dislike both the extremist routes. whether or not the writers intended to make the player feel that way is subjective, and may well depend on where a player falls on the smt alignment continuum, or even on desu 2′s version of that continuum. either way, i at least liked egalitarian better than meritorious b/c team nagoya has such a strong rapport w/one another, compared to the cognitive dissonance-riddled mess that is team osaka. based on their dialogue from any daichi route, the members of team nagoya definitely know they’re not necessarily vying for the best solution to their very legitimate concerns. they’re a lot easier to sympathize with b/c their grievances are very real–as joe says in “dream’s end”, while society may be growing less prejudiced over time, for many people, there is no time to “wait for things to get better”. the problem lies much more in going thru polaris to make a change, as the ending p clearly (and horrifyingly) demonstrates that polaris just uses team nagoya’s passion for its own ends.
at any rate, the interactions between the four of them are great, from ronaldo and airi’s aforementioned dynamic, to joe and otome’s complimentary playful attitudes, to how airi represents the future that all three adults are fighting for. it’s really telling that team nagoya consists of three adults and one teenager–otome puts it most clearly in her post-defeat dialogue on daichi routes when she says that she was fighting desperately (yet short-sightedly) for the future of the world’s children. imo, airi really represents that future to the three adults, as a teenager who has already had so many doors closed in her face due to inequity. airi’s own stubbornness, selective self-flagellation, and issues w/moving on aside, schooling in particular really is s/t that can shape a child’s entire life, and i’m sure ronaldo, joe, and otome realize that. so seeing how well all four of them interact w/each other and how airi represents both the best and the worst of team nagoya’s ideals def makes them my fav faction.
My favorite mentorship
- speaking of airi’s interactions w/the adult cast, makoto + airi is so good….. i love how constructive makoto is w/airi, giving her the tools she needs to move forward in life w/o telling her to get over it, or denying that airi’s been screwed over by forces well beyond her control. makoto’s not a perfect mentor, but (as her name suggests), she’s honest w/airi, and owns up to it when she reacts too harshly. i think it’s great to see makoto helping someone in a way she knows for sure is right, in contrast to how uncertain her cognitive dissonance abt other issues in sep arc must be making her feel. on the flipside, airi gets to begin moving forward w/life again, which in turn contributes to helping her reconsider her own alienating abrasiveness (can you tell i like airi b/c she and severa are so similar……). the moral of airi and makoto’s mentorship isn’t “never ever give up on yr dreams b/c you can only ever have one True goal in life”, nor is it “there’s no need to challenge injustices done unto you b/c if you don’t rock the boat, life will move on eventually”. airi’s sub-arc comes to a more nuanced conclusion, and i don’t think she could’ve gotten there w/o makoto’s influence.
My favorite rivalry
- does hinako and yamato count? i love how often she calls him out, and how she’s not afraid of him in the least. while i doubt yamato sees hinako as much of consequence, she makes her beef w/him plain, w/o going “DIE HOUTSUIN MY JUSTICE IS SCREAMING” ala ronaldo www her voice is much-needed in a lot of situations, too. her confrontation w/yamato over whether or not he cherrypicked the results of the medium compatibility tests to get rid of io is really well-done, esp if you infer that hinako knows abt io’s own disastrous confrontation w/yamato earlier on friday.
My favorite hatred/antipathy
- while i know miyako and yamato don’t straight-up hate each other, their dynamic as enemies (or at least in opposition to one another) is great. i’m not just saying this b/c i love seeing yamato get dragged, i promise–there really is just s/t satisfying abt miyako not taking his shit at all, despite her own cognitive dissonance and his valid points abt the futility of her plan. yamato -> saiduq is also fairly interesting, tho ds2a bloated itself so much w/a tepid exploration of how their dynamic could potentially be explored that i’m not too keen on meta-ing it more. yamato is kind of a hate sink amongst the cast, tbh www saiduq’s own rebel angel-turned-usurper dynamic w/polaris is p unambiguous hatred, but it’s v interesting, given how saiduq feels he has no choice but to die as polaris’ sword on every other route. really seeing him shuck that alcor designation (ppl who call saiduq by that name when he explicitly says he dislikes it still drive me bonkers in 2017) and take up heaven’s throne is v satisfying.
My favorite potential relationship between characters who never talk in canon
- do u have a moment to talk abt how we were robbed of more io-joe interactions……… if anyone’s actually read this far, you probably do lmao in any event, i think this is mostly a limitation of how the fate system is constructed, and you can see the writers stretching and experimenting w/it in tri arc. if future desu games expand into s/t like fe’s support system, where you can see the fate system-equivalents between all characters, sometimes w/o the protag even present, i think that’d be a great step forward. i bring this up for one area in particular where i really wanted to see more joe-io interactions: on tuesday, after io’s parents die. joe has a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it line in his own fate system w/hibiki abt how his own parents are dead, but it’s not framed in a more genre-typical “tragic orphan backstory” way. it really raises the question about when someone whose parents have died is too old to be called an orphan, given that joe is only 25.
this dialogue suggests that the losses are then fairly recent, tho joe writes them off w/his patent-pending brand of escape-avoidance. for all his flakiness (his term), tho, joe really does try to fill a big brother role for tokyo trio, and this is where i think he and io could have some v fruitful interactions. i think that most of the cast isn’t really faced w/the immediacy of the high likelihood that their families are dead, w/the exception of chars like joe, jungo, airi, and keita, who all lose parents prior to the game. io, on the other hand, watches her mother die in her arms. she displays astounding resilience and focus in how quickly she draws herself back together after the loss, despite her r5 confirming that she had pretty constant suicidal ideation throughout the rest of the week (and quite possibly before the game, too). as joe is the closest to io out of the four aforementioned characters at that point in the game, i really, really would’ve loved to see his take on providing her comfort and guidance in the wake of her sudden loss. i think it would’ve been a good set of conversations for both of them, especially if you buy into the reading that both joe and io let themselves die should the player fail to prevent their death clips. in this respect, i’m interested in the similarities between joe and io, and i think a good heart-to-heart between them early on in the game would’ve led to a variety of other interactions.

Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!'s Look into the Heartfelt Moments of Animation Inspiration
When Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!'s Tsubame Mizusaki was a little girl, she became obsessed with the motion of her grandma throwing tea. She asked her to do it again, and again. She performed the motions herself. She sketched the movements of her classmates when she was supposed to be learning about posture. Something about that practiced flick seized her attention. Not the flesh or the bone but the vector of the hand, and the way the drops of tea hung in the air before they hit the ground. The animation.
In high school, Mizusaki worked with her friends to co-produce an animated short film for the robot club. In that film, a closed room of scientists witness a monster rising from beneath the school. And then, it happens: The motion of her grandmother’s flick of the wrist appears once again. There is no dramatic monologue that lays this out for us. Mizusaki’s parents talk about their daughter’s incredible eye for detail, but they do not mention the tea flick. It is there and gone, like a ghost.
Just as Mizusaki was shaped by her obsession, the other members of the Eizouken were shaped as well. As a child, Midori Asakusa thought of herself as an adventurer as she scoured her new town of Shibahama for exciting discoveries. She recorded her findings in a notebook—very much like the one she would fill with designs as a high school student. But it was Future Boy Conan that made her realize the things she was drawing each day could be harnessed toward something larger. The world of Conan is an exaggerated one, where a young hero can take out a shark in the first episode and flying machines trawl the skies. But it was that exaggeration I think Midori responded to. If the real world is already amazing enough, what if you could build an even bigger one? From that moment on, each uncovered relic and building she found in Shibihama became fodder for her grand design.
Even non-artists like the producer Sayaka Kanamori can become haunted in this way. Kanamori is deeply unsentimental, and her response to the ambitions of her fellow Eizouken members is "I respect the work you put into this. Now how do you plan to make it?" If you discussed work, much less anime production, as the result of "inspiration" rather than labor mediated by careful pragmatism, she would laugh in your face. But as we see later in the series, Kanamori became who she was because of the family-owned grocery store she could not save. "It's no use if the product is good," she says, "if nobody knows what it is." But again, I think it's a little more than that. We know that as a child she was already very good at making money and at reading people. What Kanamori learns in this moment, and drives her actions in the future, is that making money isn't good enough if the people who need it can't use it.
Maybe you’ve seen seeds sprout in the work of real-life animators, too. One example includes Hiroyuki Imaishi’s (Trigger co-founder and director or Gurren Lagann and Kill La Kill) slavish devotion to the work of Yoshinori Kanada. His most recent film, the explosive Promare, takes place in a universe where the hero's rival's most dangerous technique is transforming himself into Kanada's most famous special effect, the Kanada dragon. Kunihiko Ikuhara cribs ruthlessly from his favorites: one of Penguindrum's main themes sounds suspiciously like "Laura Palmer's Theme" from Twin Peaks, and the school in Yurikuma Arashi looks a lot like the one in Suspiria. His pick of J.A. Seazer to provide scoring for Revolutionary Girl Utena is less an out-of-nowhere brilliant choice and more the work of a diehard fan of Seazer's infamous collaborator Shuji Terayama. There are also those like Hiroshi Nagahama who made The Reflection, a superhero anime in collaboration with his childhood icon Stan Lee.
I remember what set me on the path of becoming a writer, too. My grandfather read me fairy tales, and like Mizusaki, I bought and read and transcribed every fairy tale I could find. My father told me bedtime stories he stole from whatever science fiction book he was reading at the time, and it was with that spirit of adventure that I pillaged his bookshelf in search of new discoveries. I don’t believe, as some people do, that telling stories is what makes us human—that’s just a marketing gimmick. What I do know is that if you love to tell stories, it’s hard not to do it.
Asukasa saw Future Boy Conan at just the right time to impress on it like a baby chick. Kanamori witnessed the closing of the store where she worked at an old enough age to grasp unfairness, but was too young to do anything about it. And maybe Mizusaki fixated on her grandmother's hand movements because in contrast with her busy parents, her grandmother was there and she loved her. But none of those things are enough. Asakusa and her friends aren't just trying to create a "world," they are trying to make the "Greatest World." Which means nostalgia isn't enough. Which means frantically chasing that feeling you dimly remember isn't enough. What you need is the curiosity to seek out the strange and unusual, the eye to see it, and the perspective to convey the heightened truth of it in a way that leaps off the page or the screen. All these things come from love.
When we see the small tank in the first Eizouken film fire its cannon so hard that it tips on its bottom, we know without a doubt that small moment was informed by Asakusa’s love for practical mechanics, internally consistent worldbuilding, and sense of cool. When we see a man run in the second Eizouken film, Mizusaki’s parents point out that run was given life by Mizusaki’s eye for detail (and her refusal to compromise on rendering that detail). When we see the flooded streets of Shibahama in the third film, we see the fruit ramen restaurant, the clock tower, and the bells that Asakusa and her comrades visited in pre-production. It is art that only Asukasa, Mizusaki, and Kanamori (and their friends) could create. Through their hard work and labor, they have transformed their obsessions into something that is alive.
As some have said, the thread that connects the work of Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!'s director, Masaaki Yuasa, is love. Eizouken is another one of those. But in the friendship of the Eizouken trio and their hangers-on, and in the drawings they produce, you can see the specter of life. Just as Mizusaki was haunted by the arc of her grandmother’s hand, perhaps there will be an artist who will never forget it.
