𝗵𝗲𝗲𝘀𝗲𝘂𝗻𝗴 he would be so giddy, and embarrassed and shy to find out that you write about him, boy is too flustered about the fact that you make fan content to even question anything else. it'd take a few days for him to let it all settle into his mind and then oh my god it's hell, he'll look up your account secretly even though you told him not to and then he'll keep saying random things he picked from you pieces to tease you. "my pretty doll, i will burn the world to save you"
𝗷𝗼𝗻𝗴𝘀𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗴 he is so so so sooooo embarrassed like he'll forget whatever he was up to when you accidentally let it spill that your latest post of him was doing so well. he will simply ask if you write about him and when you hesitantly admit it he'll be like okay great i hope you account does well??? he loves being the one you write for but he doesn't want to embarrass you by speaking any more of it. although from time to time he will ask for some updates on how it's been going.
𝗷𝗮𝗲𝘆𝘂𝗻 he is so happy you don't understand the level at which he is like platinum gem rank happy. he'll immediately sit with you beg you to show him your account and let him read through the fics, even the other members' he's just so curious he can't sit still. he'll read one with like heeseung as a secret agent and then tell you he would have been a better suit for it. then he'll read a spiderman one you wrote for him and then ask you if you wanna try the upside down kiss.
𝘀𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗻 he stopped working, system crashed. unable to believe for days that you got a fan account about him and on top of that you write things about him. thinks he's dreaming until you speak of it again and he's like you weren't joking?? will ask you things about it like what you write and how it works, if people like his fics and what aus you write him in and why you think of him as fitting for an au. a literal question bank, will inquire about every little detail but never look it up himself.
𝘀𝗲𝗼𝗻𝘄𝗼𝗼 he's like in disbelief but like in a happy really elated way so excited to see you account, your aesthetic, your follower count, your writing style. just about everything and he's so supportive like you go girl, he'll also most probably make an account himself and follow you. commenting on each fic and sending asks like 'guess who baby ( ◜‿◝ )' he will also look through other accounts to come up with better advice to grow you space. will save the pieces you write about him to reread.
𝗷𝘂𝗻𝗴𝘄𝗼𝗻 the happiest kitty in the world, will leave everything literally drop it the second you tell him you got a writing account of him whether it's accidental or intentional. ask you the username and read all of your pieces about him in one sitting. definitely will get jealous to see others you wrote for and more if you someone else has more fics than him. will immediately give you new ideas like plan out a whole plot and then tell you, it's about him and you in an alternate universe so you need to write it.
𝗿𝗶𝗸𝗶 he is immediately teasing you to cover up the embarrassment he feels, like an internal struggle of why should he be the one embarrassed when you are the one who write fanfiction about him. will take your phone from you open your account and read it aloud, though halfway in he'll genuinely get invested especially if it's a social media au, going 'm not like that!' every chapter and when he's caught up to the latest one, he'll bug you to reveal what happens next, after all it's his story!

Narumitsu/AA fic rec list No.1
---- Multi-chapter ----
pressure (pushing down on me) ApprenticeofDoyle | @apprenticeofdoyle https://archiveofourown.org/works/28440966/chapters/69694179
miles edgeworth's terrible, no-good, very bad week ApprenticeofDoyle | @apprenticeofdoyle https://archiveofourown.org/works/29390913/chapters/72203136 (this one isn't completed but please listen to my advice: a fic does not need to be completed to be enjoyable and/or give you necessary feelings) This author writes so beautifully, go read both!!! The first one has such cute and emotional moments and there's a scene in particular I will cherish most dearly for all of eternity. The second one follows as the title says Miles's most terrible misfortunes (aka AAI), so enjoy his very well written struggles.
The Miraculous Disappearance Of Phoenix Wright JJsADragon | @4ragon https://archiveofourown.org/works/15341994 This is Phoenix-centric, narumitsu is background - it's so beautiful and it's full of Phoenix drama and... hear me out... Godot!!! But, being serious here. This one really struck me. I don't know, I don't quite have the words to explain. You need to experience it yourself. But I can say that it made me rethink my whole perception of Phoenix's character. Vacation All I Ever Wanted JJsADragon | @4ragon https://archiveofourown.org/works/25088599/chapters/60774496 Same author as previous one and what can I say? It's gorgeous go read it. Also side note I actually laughed out loud at very very frequent intervals.
Saturation (ongoing) TiedyedTrickster | @greentrickster https://archiveofourown.org/works/20272603/chapters/48054286 Already talked about this previously....: It's a Miles-POV fic, sweet & cute, emotional, with an amazing sense of humor. The character relationships are chef's kiss. Absolutely brilliant all around.
The Things We Agree to Believe are True actual_goblin | @metaphorical-goblin https://archiveofourown.org/works/42658245/chapters/107157108 I think this is the kind of thing you need to read without any explaination whatsoever. It's just... an adventure, I would call it, and very very beautiful, so just jump in. There is one thing I can say though. If you like character exploration, to a degree that is frankly out of this universe, GO.
Kindred timepatches | @monimolimnion https://archiveofourown.org/works/28852137/chapters/70772769 It's about Miles adopting Pess! And it makes him realize a few things. It's so so very heartwaming. Set during the 7y gap. I think whatever I say might spoil it so I'll just describe how it made me feel! Fuzzy. Warm. Sappy. Cozy like wrapped in a blanket in winter with a nice cup of cocoa in hand. ---- One-shots ----
pressed beneath the burden of proof harmony | @harmonization https://archiveofourown.org/works/57174151 So very very very well written - I love how the author describes thoughts and emotions... it felt like I was feeling them myself.
Trials, Texts, and Tribulations bluemoodblue | @blue-mood-blue https://archiveofourown.org/works/20590601 Just very very sweet and with such nice subtlety it made me scream internally-- I love subtle things.
A Boy at the Airport KrisseyCrystal (IceCreAMS) | @krisseycrystal https://archiveofourown.org/works/29741124 Kid Apollo + Wrightworth. cute too cute too extremely cute family feelings overload ---- my heart is flying away...
Code to My Heart SnowOnVenus | @legayllyblonde https://archiveofourown.org/works/57499360 Incredibly beautiful and the drawings made to accompany it are absolutely charming and so fitting to the story... I especially love how Edgeworth's character was explored here. This will forever be inprinted in my heart.
To be honest there are so many more so I will probably make more lists in the future, as I also need to reread things (I have terrible, terrible memory)... hence the '1' on the title.
#aa fic rec#ace attorney#narumitsu#phoenix wright#miles edgeworth#wrightworth#aa fic#I had this in my drafts for a long time because I wanted to add more but I figured I can just do a part 2 in the future

✨️ Deleted Scenes ✨️
Sooo, in the 'Never Be Alone Again' fic, there were a few scenes that I liked a lot that ended up getting scrapped / deleted hjgfss. Made a couple doodles and a bit of writing for the deleted scenes!
This was one of the scenes that I mentioned that was giving me trouble! It was just after the final machine was completed and I was having trouble writing the chase sequence - I ended up going to Reddit threads for writing advice, and then scrapped the scene altogether.
Overall, it was breaking the pacing and believability to have Gigi grab Rodger here and THEN having him get up and run from Glisten. Given the speed of Glisten, he would not have had more than two seconds to try and run away before Glisten ended up pouncing on him, and I wanted the confrontation to be in view of the elevator and closer to when it closes. Plus it gave me a little bit of Chekov's Gun with Boxten!
So for this, it wasn't just one scene, but things I was trying to sprinkle in through the whole fic. I know I've mentioned before that I HC Rodger as emoting a lot more expressively in both his mannerisms and also in literal cartoon emotes, and then if he truly gets overwhelmed, he'll end up going mute and letting his natural physical expressiveness do the talking until his mind calms down (selectively mute Rodger HC :)). Truthfully I really wanted a scene where Glisten would get to basically monologue lol.
Unfortunately, whenever I kept rereading wherever this popped up, it just... wasn't working as much as I wanted to, and kept feeling unnecessary and pushed in. Eventually I scrapped the emotes and the idea of him getting overwhelmed in the epilogue, but I imagine Glisten would've tried to comfort him a little when he realised what was happening before the monologue started. Thankfully (or unfortunately given how you see it) he did actually get to have most of the dialogue in the epilogue, I just kept Rodger's dialogue short because of him LITERALLY *JUST* waking up from almost dying and trying to process everything.
♤~~♡~~♤
Scrapped Epilogue Dialogue (Reason: Out of Character, didn't fit with established dialogue)
<Pink text is what's already in the fic. Plaintext is what was scrapped>
"and I have Toodles to take care of, and- and everyone is relying on me to fix this mess, and it isn't even a definite that we'll find my equipment quickly!! I can’t just accept this and start planning for the long term!”
“You can because you are STUCK here.” Glisten hisses out, leaning closely to Rodger again even as the other rears back. "You know, none of them came out of the elevator when you were stalled to help."
The mirror's eye has reddened again as he speaks, his tone somewhere between desperate and crazed.
"They just *stood there.* Watching and panicking as if they couldn't do a thing. The most they did was throw a *wrench* into me. Not even when you were five feet away being attacked by Boxten. They had a few seconds. They could have run out."
The way Glisten says that so vehemently, his fingertips digging into the couch cushion, is unsettling to hear. Rodger had honestly never heard him speak so bitterly about something.
"What are you implying he-"
"What I'm implying should be obvious, Detective."
Glisten gives Rodger a long look, almost as if looking through him at something else.
"They left you. They left us," Glisten whispers, "You- you said Vee didn't trust me, and- you know she can make some rash decisions, maybe- maybe she made them stay back because there was so little time left..."
A small, delirious giggle emits from the mirror, sending a chill up Rodger's spine as the detective's eye darts around for anything he could use to...
To do what?
I don't know.
You can't hurt him.
I know.
You can't outrun him.
I know.
So what would you do if he starts getting out of control again?
I don't know.
"And- and I don't *blame* her, not risking another Toon to save you, and it's- it's my fault that that decision had to happen in the first place, my fault, if you'd been a few seconds earlier, you'd-" ...
♤~~♡~~♤
Aaaand there's some deleted / scrapped bits! Some bits could probably have been executed if it wasn't already so long and I knew how to fix them sounding boring or non-believable, but then there were some bits that just didn't fit with the character personas already established. Deleted scenes my beloved <3

So for those who've known me since we were all Glee blogs, you might remember that at one point, I did a fic based on the Persephone/Hades mythology (as one does). I then wrote another fic taking a slightly sideways view of that story that made it bleaker (as one does). Then they gave Blaine a brother and I wrote a version of the second story that incorporated a brother character and also started to interpolate some elements of the Orpheus myth (as one does). Then things started getting a little off the rails and I stopped putting things up on Ao3 because I could tell it had completely stopped being fic. But I kept going, because I was having fun and doing research and playing with the lovely interconnectedness of Greek mythology (did you know that there's versions of the quest for the golden fleece that have both Orpheus and Atalanta among the Argonauts?) and also exploring concepts that I find perenially fascinating, like death and family and love and how stories change in the telling and change over time. In the end, I wound up with seven stories that I thought were pretty good, and that I might want to do something with someday.
And then I didn't do anything.
For a long time.
I don't want to say how long, but if you go back to my Ao3 and find the word "Pomegranates" in the titles, you can figure it out.
I thought about doing something. I picked the stories up every so often, reread them. Went "Hey, that's good. I should do something with them." And then I didn't do anything. At one point, I had someone design a cover for the ebook version. I have no idea when I did it and have no idea where it is, but I know it happened and it was a cool cover and I'm very sorry I lost track of it (I did pay for it, at least). At another point, @seldnei did some beta work on one story. And then it just sat. And sat.
And then this past year I picked the stories back up for the umpteenth time, and I read them, and I cried because if you leave your work alone for long enough, the love comes back and you can cry over your own shit again (true story!).
And I made a decision: It was getting done. My one and only New Year's Resolution, 2025.
It's not even February.
I have no idea where we're going from here. Maybe some people will like it. Hopefully some people like it. Hopefully at least @seldnei likes it, but ideally some other people as well. (Maybe hopefully not too many people, but we'll see). But I put it out there. I have advertised it. People who know me in real life know I did this, which is a whole other ball of weird, but I did that. It's been done.
I did the damn thing.
And now I'm going to do my Latvian app, write a poem, and get three sentences in on the other story.

Silm reread 23: the War of Wrath
Scheduling this reread post for the @morgoth-into-the-void-week. :)
So first, we are informed that our narative frame's source is the exiled Noldor (and Sindar, if I understand correctly), and they did not join the army marching North. They only learned the events later, in Aman.
So the host of the Valar was separate, the Noldor and the rest did not fight in the War of Wrath? At all? Why?
Also, I feel like this invalidates some fics, but I may be wrong. Anyway this feels strange.
The warriors "took shapes", so there were many Maiar in the army, I consider this confirmed, because I don't see how it can be read otherwise. [Unless translation messed it up]
They fight in Anfauglith, according to other sourced it lasts 50 years or so. wow. Also, the two armies are huge.
A few Balrogs escaped.
The Edain (the few that remained), in contrast to the local Elves, did join the war. Huh again. why the Elves did not?
Also, most Men were at the wrong side and the Elves hold a grudge about it. Even though, if I understand the text correctly, they themselves did not fight.
Morgoth is scared. How surprising. Winged dragons make a debut, but it soesn't help much. Earendil + all kinds of birds kil Ancalagon.
Oh, and speaking of birds: Elwing is on the ships, I would assume, with the Teleri. I would be very not surprised if Elrond and Elros meet her and they all have a long talk, and this is how the kidnap fam is dismantled (not leaving them with Gil-Galad, but letting them go to their actual mother. Who later sails back and then Elrond joins Gil-Galad. But this is purely a HC based on who was where.)
Only a few Balrogs and dragons escape (so that we can have some monsters in SA, or even, as we know, TA). The power of the Valar reaches deep into earth and cleanses it, I guess. Still, I am pretty certain that the Valar weren't there personally, just their Maiar.
Morgoth runs away, does all kinds of cringe cowardly stuff, nobody listenes to him, I have some second-hand embarassment reading this. The translation says his feet were cut off, which iirc I heard is kind of "Balrog's wings" thing, also for sake of Eonwe not looking bad I prefer to imagine just a regular "throwing him to the ground". ("but his feet were hewn from under him, and he was hurled upon his face" — English-savvy people, what do you think?]
Anyway I feel sorry for him, yes my brain is like that.
He is chained and his crown is replaced by a copy and stolen by Sauron for sake of appearing in Amazon's series reforged into a collar. I want to know by whom it was reforged, but the book does not tell me. Either some Valar were there (they can effectively teleport, from what is said in other places), or the reforging happenned in Valinor after Morgoth was taken there (the text doesn't sound like it), or some Maia of Aule did the reforging. It would be interesting if it was Curumo. Surely touching the thing won't influence him in a way that will bear its ugly fruit much later…
Also the Silarils are freed and glow under the sky. Hmm. They were not taken to Valinor, so the reforging clearly seems to take place in ME. So, was Aule there or did some Maiar do it?
"the two Silmarils […] shone unsullied beneath the sky; and Eönwë took them, and guarded them." Argh, because the Polish translation has it sounding like "were given to Eonwe to guard" I wrote a whole paragraph that now makes no sense. :/
Also, yes, clearly no Valar are there, it's the only logical reading.
All the Elves are summoned to Aman, as we know not all are enthusiastic, and we get to our guys Maedhros and Maglor (apparently without the twins now).
They don't go to talk to Eonwë, they send a messanger. Which sadly makes that one fic non-canon.
I wrote a long, convoluted "yelling on Maglor and hyping about things I should be writing inseat of just hyping" tangent, so I'll indent it, so you can skip it more easily. [Instead of deleting it. :) ]
My. guys. OK, I can get Mae who is crealy overriden by trauma here. But Maglor. My guy. Makalaure Canafinwe Feanarion. My. Guy. I get that you feel guilty towards your brother and all that, and he is triggered and "who knows what terrible things the Valar would do to us if we go against them. They would hang us from the mountain and nobody will come to save us and—" but my guy. You really would help him more by leaving him and just surendering to Eonwe. Also, my guys, this was already said, but you both get the -1th prize in category of "logic and basic inductive reasoning (if He hears us once, He will hear us again, and if not, the problem is not a problem)". But I get it, trauma turns the thinking brain off. Anwyay, Maglor, my guy. you are the worst at "being right". Becasue you are right but you do the wrong thing anyway,. MY GUY. I want to kick you. I am serisouly worried. I know the fandom wishes you all the best and ten times more, and so do I, but. My guy. You do need to put in some work. Because "having others solve your problems" never worked for you. So, I'm sorry but you will be put in Awkward Situations until you finally go against your family. Yes, this is harder when said family is dead, but we'll find a way. I know some people need help first, but ok you will have [or whatever tense] spend quite a lot of time in Rivendell first with your lovely kidnap-son but then you have to start behaving like an adult who makes his own decisions. And stop being codependent. And yes, in order to do that I am going to put you in the weirdest, awkwardest situations and also kinda scary situations ald many kinds of situations. And no, you are not going to have a glorious beautiful moment of redemption, because you're too much of a poet, you would focus on "how to describe it in a song" too much and miss the point. Also, I like giving my guys awkward situations, because, honestly, we deserve them quite well. So. you will feel like an idiot and do something so awkward that you will blush while explaining it to your dead brother and you won't be able to look him in the eye. Because. My guy. Don't worry though, you aren't even having the worst of my creative side. But. My guy. Seriously. You are a complete idiot (affectionate) and I want to kick you (affectionate).
Back to the reread proper.
So, those two. They sneak into the camp, in disguise. The camp awakens…. how did all the camp suddenly awake? Also, they are ready to die, the book says it, so @dfwbwfbbwfbwf it is canon and not only for Maedhros.
Eonwe lets them go freely, because… he is that kind, I guess? And/or knows that it will work out.
Maedhros (says the book) realized that Eonwe was right ant soF lost the right to the Silmarils. Also he is pretty clearly not in control of his actions (but he did maneuver himself there tbh)
Maglor is also burned and can't stand it, and we get the fan-loved Silm change-from-other-versions of "he wanders the shores so that we can write fanfiction of him". I want to hug him. But, also: Maglor you [beloved] fool.
Lot of Elves sail West, the Silamrils are gone and will not be joined until the world breaks (poor babies). The Elves from Belerians (the Exiles? the sindar? Both) live on Tol Eressea, and the Valar forgive them and Manwe loves them. the Teleri forgive them and the Doom is lifted.
OK, but then why do they live on Tol Eressea only???
By choice (more home-like)? To not pollute Valinor proper with their marring-influenced presence? Because the Vanyar threw a collective tantrum (yes, I hc the Vanyar to have some faults)? Just temporarily?
All of those make sense to me.
A list of Elves and again we are reminded that Elrond and Elros are very cool and special. (They are.)
Morgoth is thrown out the Door of Night into the timeless void (so probably not just outer space). Oh, the Valar did it.
So he was taken to Valinor.
I wish there was a fic on how scary-awkward-weird it was for the sailors of the ship that took him. OK, tbh there was probably more Maiar than Teleri, if any Teleri. But. It would be interesting. Especially with the Teleri having almost no experience with Morgoth. He is more like a legend to them, I think. So, scary-weird but also "hey, we are important and we'll be famous" maybe. Or maybe Ulmo just dragged him there.
There are guards on the walls o the world (huh?) and Earendil is keeping watch, which is strange considering that we are also told (in a place I can't find now) that Morgoth will not physically return (with a strange caveat). So, anyway: Morgoth gone but his lies are here still.
Quenta Silmarillion ends, we get a small … not even teaser, but after-the-credits paragraph about "hey maybe something will get Seriously Better but we don't know, Manwë and Varda probably know and Mandos did not tell anyone".

Some more fic recs cause I'm obsessed and these are all really good.
The Fishbowl by LordLuxury - basically Bruce is a dick which I don't usually go for but it's really good, and he's terrible to Dick and the batfam witnesses him treating Dick like shit and hitting him for the first time and it becomes a whole thing. It's great. 10/10.
2. Look Right Through Me by Teaberry - Stranger Things fic where Steve is trapped in the Upside Down a few months before will and nobody really notices. Will and Steve friendship, no bashing.
3. this place of wrath and tears - and the sequel - my head is bloody, but unbowed by NorthernRanger - Harry goes back in time to 1979 where he gains the attention of Death Eaters, Order members and pretty much all of the British wizarding world by kicking ass. Alastor Moody sort of becomes a weird ass teenager's dad. Not actually, but whatever. Love it. 10/10.
4. Facade by Impravidus - Destiel with Castiel being a very religious man and Dean having been raised to believe in killing supernatural creatures by his serial killer father. It's an idea I've thought about before and am so glad to see it written. 10/10.
5. Miracles Don't Exist by sameuspegasus - Supernatural and House MD crossover where Dean seems to have a case of continuously coming back from the dead and everyone is confused. 10/10.
6. Sand Dollar Child by withay - basically people and other think that Percy's a god cuz he's just that guy. 10/10. Maybe rating everything 10/10 isn't the way to go but whatever. I only speak the truth.
7. An Hour of Wolves by solvskrift - Harry's sixth year where Harry is once again going through some shit. Romilda Vane is a nasty bitch who deserves a crucio to the face and love potions should be fucking illegal. Incomplete but a really good read.
8. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - AU Rewrite by killtherat - Harry's kidnapped by Voldemort and his buddies. I honestly don't remember anything else but I know it was amazing so give it a read. 10/10 boom.
9. The Second String by Eider_Down - time travel to the Marauders' era but then it turns out to also be dimension travel. Harry is a badass. I don't really remember much about this one either but it's one of my favorite Harry Potter fics so. 10/10.
10. Three's Family by darkbluedark - Harry and Draco accidentally time travel to the first war and get caught and interrogated by Sirius, James and Dumbledore. It's mostly humour, bickering and some angst. Amazing. I honestly reread it a bunch of time. 10/10.
11. Fishing in Alaska by CaffeeinatedFlumadiddle - one of the best and funniest fics ever, truly. Triton and Percy (and Kymopoliea, did I spell her name right?) are sibling goals. Percy's powers are even more destructive than usual and the gods are worried. He runs off to Alaska cuz fuck them. It's great. 11/10.

I mean, I'd *like personally* if using CNTW meant something, as someone who genuinely does prefer to avoid the stuff covered in the archive warnings.... but I also understand the whole point is that it doesn't, and that in an archive you absolutely need a setting which just opts out of the need for warnings altogether.
They could be someone who puts that on every fic, because they don't feel like going through each of them like that, or because they ideologically oppose the idea of content warnings for whatever reason.
They could be someone who feels that putting specific warnings on it will spoil their fic, and they don't want to spoil. (I'm someone who doesn't care about spoilers ESPECIALLY with fanfic so I've always been a bit "eh" about this, but I get that I'm the minority here and also, it's the norm in original fiction. And I also get it's ultimately the author's discretion if they'd rather not spoil, and I respect that.)
They could mean that the person MIGHT include something that is warning-worthy later, but they aren't sure yet, so they're putting CNTW on there just in case because they feel putting on "No Archive Warnings Apply" and then changing it if they do decide to include character death/non-con/etc. later would be unfair to their readers.
They could mean that their use of something is borderline - for instance, underage sex alluded to, dubcon rather than noncon, violence they're not sure is graphic enough for the warning, etc. - and so they want to head off people who might be wary of that in any form/cover their asses, without drawing in people who are specifically looking for that element with false advertising. (This is how I often use them.)
They could be that they uploaded someone else's work with permission, but didn't specifically ask if they're okay with having warnings applied to their work.
It could be any of these things, and that's totally fine. The whole point is YOU DON'T KNOW. And if you click on a fic with that warning and it doesn't explain why it uses it, you're going in aware of that lack of knowledge and up for whatever version it is.
--
TBH, looking at my old stuff, I have a couple of cases where I barely remember the work and don't care to reread it. That's another common use, and it's really helpful for encouraging historical preservation. True, the CNTW means fewer people are clicking on these, but they're the kind of thing I'm including for completeness because I tell other people to do that.
I've also got some where I just got rid of the CNTW but I'm pretty sure it was on there because I was uploading in a hurry and meant to go think more deeply about tags later. Again, a "If I can't upload this in 2 seconds, I'm probably not getting around to it" issue.
Another one is for people who are very sure their dubcon is not noncon but who also know their fandom is full of douchebag antis who will constantly report them to AO3. If CNTW is on there, PAC will just tell the person reporting "Sorry, we're not even going to look at it", and the poster never gets contacted and bothered about this.

Going Easy
Your spidey fics are amazing. I almost always read/reread one before bed lol. They’re just so cozy and comforting. I love how you write Peter and Natasha’s relationship, but I also really love the dynamic between Peter and Steve. One of my favorite moments being in “Look After You” when Peter was pretty terrified of what Steve may think of him (cause he’s CAPTIN AMERICA) but Steve comforts him. Steve is just so soft with Peter. I was wondering if you would be interested in writing something between Peter and Steve with that sort of vibe again? – anon
Read on Ao3
Warnings: panic attacks
Pairings: gen
Word Count: 4039
"He's going easy on you." Something cold trickles down Peter's spine. "He…is?" *** Captain Steve Rogers is intimidating, sure, but Peter's handling it just fine. Then Natasha says something that makes it...slightly less fine.
Peter's about 90% sure he's not alone when he says that he's a little afraid of Captain Steve Rogers. Come on, the man's a savant on the field, super strength, insane tactical mind, crazy good fighting skills, and enough sheer stubbornness to be an effective replacement for renewable energy.
Seriously. He's pretty sure Mr. Stark's working on that or something.
Sure, it makes sense that mainly it's bad guys or people who don't seem to grasp the concept of being kind to other people that have the most reason to be scared of someone like Captain Rogers, but that doesn't stop the little twinges of fear in his gut when he sees him walk into the room. The whole 'motivational/vaguely disappointed speech' thing doesn't really work on him anymore—thank you, stupid detention video—but everything else? Yeah, that works. Straightens his spine and everything. He does have a pretty good excuse in that he's, y'know, the youngest Avenger, he's still a high school kid which means this is an adult he has to listen to, and it's Captain Goddamn America. It's probably a good thing to have a healthy amount of respect for the guy! Even if it sometimes verges on making him really anxious when they're left in a room alone together!
Case in point: the one-on-one training session they're in the middle of because it makes tactical sense that Captain Rogers would want to know how everyone fights so they can coordinate better in the field, but Peter's anxiety has been having the time of its life making it much, much harder than it needs to be.
Granted, it hasn't been all that bad. Captain Rogers is the de facto team leader in the field for a reason, and for the most part it's like he's having a PE class that actually challenges him. And yeah, it's kind of fun to practice the stupider moves that are more than likely to happen at some point anyway, like the Tarzan (shooting a web that Captain Rogers can grab onto and swing), the Yoink (catching and bringing a falling team member to safety), and Peter's personal favorite, the Yeet (using a web to hurl someone across a gap or a higher obstacle).
He'd had to explain why he'd named it that and got graced with only a bemused look and a quiet chuckle before they were actually practicing it, so he'll take it as a win.
But then they move onto Peter doing things by himself while Captain Rogers stands and watches, and that's…oh, boy, that's not as fun. Because now he's standing there just staring at him with that wrinkle between his brows like something's just off that he's going to make Peter fix before he's allowed to leave and it's making him second-guess himself in a way that leads to…
Peter winces as he misses the next ledge, fingers just landing shy of the steel as he tumbles to the floor. He lands on the mat, thank God, but falling from twenty feet up is still falling from twenty feet up. That's gonna be a nasty bruise for a little bit until his healing factor takes care of it.
"Peter? Spider-Man, status."
Oh, oops. "'M good, 'm all good, just got the wind knocked out of me."
He rolls onto his back and—tries really hard not to flinch when Captain Goddamn America is standing over him with his arms crossed and his gaze stern. Luckily he's pretty sure he can pass it off as general discomfort from, you know, falling twenty feet, but this man has an uncanny ability to see everything and he's not taking his chances.
"Sorry, sorry, I'm—I'm okay, just give me a second?"
He gets stared at for a moment longer before Captain Rogers sighs, crouching down and resting a hand on his uninjured side. "I think that's enough for today."
"What? No, it's fine, just give me a second—I should know how to do stuff hurt too, right?"
Something flickers across his expression too quick to name before it settles on concern. "I'm not gonna have you push yourself too much right now, okay? I think Nat'd kill me."
As if on cue, the door slides open with a telltale whoosh.
"What're you doing to my Baby Spider?"
"I just fell!" Peter calls before Captain Rogers can say anything—is that rude? Maybe. "I'm okay!"
Natasha comes up behind them, sitting on the mat and pulling up his shirt sleeve. Both her and Captain Rogers stare at the bruise and he shuffles unconsciously.
"It's fine, I'm almost done healing it."
"Yeah, that's enough for today," Captain Rogers says, quickly standing up, "get some rest, alright? You did great."
"I did?"
He pauses, that thing flickering over his face again, before he chuckles. "Yeah, kid, you did."
He leaves with another glance and Natasha and Peter can't help the way he presses slightly into her side. She stares after him until the door closes, shaking her head with a laugh.
"What?"
"He's going easy on you."
Something cold trickles down Peter's spine. "He…is?"
She laughs again. "Oh, yeah."
This is fine. This is fine. Everything's so fine and good right now in the way that it's happening.
He can handle this.
***
He can't handle this.
All of his anxiety around Captain Rogers? Doubled. Tripled. Through the roof. He's trying not to be obvious about it, but he's pretty sure he's failing miserably. Especially since he's now being gently-not-gently cornered in his lab by said source of anxiety.
Well, maybe not cornered, but when the man knocks—knocks on the lab door and says hey, can I talk to you for a second? Which is basically the same thing. And of course, he reverts to scared-little-kid mode and—
"Did I do something wrong?"
Not the best way to start off this conversation! Not in the slightest!
"What?" Captain Rogers blinks. "No, Peter, you didn't do anything wrong. I, uh, I should be asking you that."
It's Peter's turn to blink at him, confused. He's never seen the man anything other than composed but right now he looks almost sheepish as he asks if there's a good place for him to sit. Peter silently points to a nearby and he sits, hands folded in between his knees, leaning forward like he's trying to make himself smaller, less threatening.
Wait, that's exactly what he's doing.
He's also talking. Which means Peter should probably be listening and not drifting off into nowhere-land, so he quickly tunes back in just in time to hear: "…training session? You don't have to start back up again if you don't want to, or we could ask Nat or someone else to be there if that would make you more comfortable?"
"N-no, that's fine, I'm—I'm good to train again! Are you—did you want to go now, or—actually, I have a thing I wanna finish first, if that's okay, so if we could—"
"Peter."
He shuts up. Captain Rogers looks at him for a moment before he sighs, letting his head hang for a second before looking back up.
"Are you scared of me?"
"What? No, that's—that'd be crazy, right? Why would I be scared of you?" Frantic babbling is definitely selling this, uh huh, 100%. "That's—that's not true! I'm—I'm not—it's—okay, so, um…"
"You can be honest," he says, voice quiet, and that's not fair because now Peter wants to just tell him everything.
"…I mean, I'm not, like, scared, but it's…I'm…y'know," he mumbles, fiddling with something he probably shouldn't be fiddling with, "you're…intimidating. Which isn't a bad thing! It's a good thing—I mean, sometimes it's a bit much—but that's not, like, your fault or anything. I just—"
He can't meet Captain Rogers' gaze. He just can't. He sees him shift a bit out of the corner of his eye.
"…yeah."
"Okay," he hears, still in that quiet voice, "is there something that happened recently that made it worse?"
"I—uh—well—it's kind of embarrassing." He swallows. "Natasha—Ms. Romanoff said you were, uh, going easy on me and it just sort of…"
He trails off when Captain Rogers makes a noise. It's not a scoff, it's not really even a laugh, but it's a noise and his head jerks up to see him pinching the bridge of his nose. "That's not what she meant."
"What do you mean, not what she meant?"
"She didn't mean I was taking it easy on you when it came to your training."
"…then what did she mean?"
He's gotta be imagining things. He really has to be imagining things because Captain Rogers looks embarrassed. And that's not—he does not have a reason to be embarrassed right now and he needs someone else who has a more competent handle on the situation to explain why he is.
"Peter—"
He's gonna pay Natasha back for all the saving she does. He's going to. He swears. Because she waltzes in like she owns the place and comes over to give him a hug before mock-glaring at Captain Rogers.
"What've you done now?"
"You need to explain why you told him I was going easy on him."
"Because you are, Steve, and it's getting kind of pathetic."
Peter flinches. And that was the wrong thing to do because now both of them are looking at him with concern. Then he hears Captain Rogers mutter something under his breath and then his hair's getting ruffled by a cool hand and he's being cuddled against a firm side.
"It's okay, Baby Spider. It really is. Hey, look at me." Natasha smiles at him then gestures to Captain Rogers. "Do you wanna know what the worst-kept secret is about our friend here?"
"Uh, sure."
"He's a big teddy bear."
Peter blinks. And blinks. And blinks a third time for good measure. Captain Rogers doesn't try to deny it, which is the other weird thing, he just sits there and stares at Peter with an expression he'd describe as a pout if it wasn't on, you know, Captain Steve Rogers.
"He's…what?"
Natasha nods sagely. "A big, soft, fluffy teddy bear. It's a danger to even sit on your bed looking somewhat sad because he'll turn up in something soft asking if you need to talk about anything."
Peter snorts out a laugh. That can't be right. But he's still…not denying it? What? "Is that—really?"
"Ask Wanda. Or Yelena. Or—actually, FRIDAY, can you patch Stark in?"
"Right away." There's a brief chime in the ceiling. "Mr. Stark on line 4."
"What's up, Romanoff, I have a nuclear reactor that needs babysitting—"
"Explain the Cashmere Protocol for Peter."
A pause. "Kid still skittish around Rogers?"
"Mhm."
"Cashmere Protocol is when there's an overly-compassionate puppy dog in soft clothing roaming around 'cause he needs someone to be protective over and if you don't wanna be smothered in affection, you better make yourself scarce or be prepared to cry a whole lot."
"That's why you replaced all my sweaters?"
"Tell me you like your dollar store hoodie better and I'll buy you a whole damn gas station company."
"Stark, I swear to God—"
"Babysitting a nuclear reactor! Bye!"
The chime sounds again and Captain Rogers just shakes his head as Natasha laughs. She ruffles Peter's hair again. "Him going easy on you? Not training related at all. He's trying not to smother you to death with all his affection."
"Wh—me? Why?"
That must be the wrong thing to say because Captain Rogers' face falls—the man is pouting. The man is honest to God pouting—and Natasha's grin just gets bigger. "Like I said. Teddy bear."
"O-oh."
"You're not doing anything wrong, Peter," comes the quiet voice again, and now it's gone all gentle too, "I didn't mean to make you anxious around me, and you definitely don't have to change what you're doing. Yes, it's true that I'd like to be there for you when you need me, even if it's not team-related, but if you're not comfortable with that, that's perfectly fine."
"I'm—okay," he mumbles, "I just—that's fine. I'm…fine with it."
"It's okay if you're not."
"No! It's—uh—" Natasha holds him a little closer and he takes a deep breath— "I just…didn't know it was an…option, y'know?"
"And that's not on you." Captain Rogers smiles at him. Smiles at him all soft and caring. "But if you want help, or support, or comfort, you can come to me. Okay?"
"O-okay."
***
He didn't really think he'd ever actually take him up on it. And technically, he didn't. Not voluntarily.
But he's having a stupid panic attack in the living room of all places—amateur hour, all experienced panic-attack havers know you're supposed to do that in your room—and then there's a dark blur in front of him and warm hands cupping his face and a low voice crooning something in his ear.
"…you're doing really well, sweetheart, just look at me, that's it, that's it, Peter, just look at me…"
He blinks. Tears rolls down his cheeks as a face swims into view.
"Hey, there you are," Captain Rogers says gently with a soft smile on his face, his thumbs brushing the tears from his damp skin, "hey, sweetheart, it's only me, it's just Steve."
"S-Steve?"
"Yeah, sweetheart, it's Steve. Hey, you're doing really well, okay? Everything's okay, you're in Avengers Tower, you're safe, it's just me. I'm not gonna let anything happen to you."
He sniffles. His hands are shaking. He's cold. It's so cold.
"You're cold? Okay, let's get you warm. Are you okay with being touched a little more? Yeah? Okay, come here, sweetheart, come cuddle with me." And then there are firm arms around him and oh, where has this been every time he's having a panic attack? "There you go…I've got you, sweetheart, it's okay. I'll keep you safe."
His chest feels like it's collapsing in on itself. His lungs are on fire. His hands are going to shake off of his wrists. He's staring down at the cold water on the floor with concrete collapsing on top of him and he can hear Aunt May screaming and—and—and—
"Shh, shh, sweetheart, I've got you. Hold onto me, yeah, just like that. You got me, okay? I'm right here. You're safe."
—and Captain Rogers—Steve just holds him. Rubs his back and murmurs sweet things in his ear and lets him cry all over him and cuddles him close until he can breathe normally again.
"Steve?"
"Yeah, sweetheart?" He pulls back a little, brushing a stray tear from under his chin. "You feel a little better?"
He nods.
"Can I get you some water?"
"Mhm."
And he expects Steve to get up, because there isn't water around here, but then he reaches down and picks up a water bottle and presses it carefully into Peter's hands. "Slow, okay?"
"Wha—did you just have this?"
"You were crying," he says, like that's an answer to the question, "crying makes you dehydrated. Let me know if you need more."
"Do you have, like, another bottle down there?"
Steve chuckles. "No, but I do have the magic ability to go refill it."
"Yeah."
The water is cold. He manages about half of it before he's done. Steve takes it, sets it out of sight and cards a hand through his hair. "When was the last time you ate something?"
"What time is it?"
He checks his watch. "Just gone three."
"Like…an hour ago." He sniffles and goes to wipe his nose when Steve holds out a tissue box. He takes one and blows it with a desolate honk. "Sorry."
"For what?"
"Crying on you."
"That's the point, sweetheart, I don't mind." He rubs his arm soothingly. "Can I ask what you normally do to recover from panic attacks?"
"Well, I, uh, normally I just sort of…sit for a while and then get back to whatever I was doing." He swipes another tissue. "This one wasn't even that bad, so…I'm—I'm good now. Thanks."
Steve's quiet for a second. "Do you want me to go?"
"What?"
"Do you want me to go?"
That…feels like a trick question. Does he want the very protective and caring person giving him cuddles during a panic attack to leave? No, obviously, but that's not the point. The point is Peter's fine now, so Steve's job is done. But then he's making a face like that's not the right thing to have said, so Peter starts backpedaling, and then Steve shushes him gently.
"What do you want to do to recover from panic attacks?"
"What do I want to do? I want to not have panic attacks."
"Don't we all, kid," he laughs, "but humor me. Say you want Stark to rent out a pizza joint so you can stuff yourself full of garlic bread, say you want to paint your room blue, make it as unreasonable as you can. If you could do anything in the world, what would you want to do?"
Peter thinks. What's the biggest joke he could make right now? Something about canceling homework? Something about blowing up the dumb power plant in the middle of the lake? Something about making a show come true or something else really outlandish?
No, what comes out of his mouth is: "…have someone help me take a shower so I don't feel all gross and…and watch a movie with take-out, or something."
You know. What he actually wants.
Steve blows out a breath in front of him and cups his chin in his big warm hand. "I thought I said to be unreasonable, Parker. C'mon, let's go get you washed up."
"W-wait, wait, what?" as Steve starts to stand up, one hand still on his shoulder. "What're you doing?"
Steve tilts his head, that soft smile back on his face and he rubs Peter's shoulder. "You said you wanted a shower and a movie, right?"
"Yeah, but—"
Steve crouches back down so Peter doesn't have to crane his neck to look up at him, still smiling. "Let me help you, sweetheart. You've just had a panic attack and you're still shaking a little. I'll help you take a shower and then we can order some food on Stark's card and watch a movie, okay?"
"That's not fair." He refuses to believe he's whining, but lets Steve pull him up anyway. "Thought you were going easy on me."
"Not anymore, Parker. Just be glad I'm not carrying you."
"You'd do that?" And then Steve just gives him a look and gently scoops him up like he's five years old again and carries him up to his room. "…whoa."
He just chuckles, warm against Peter's chest, and sets him down on the bathroom counter. "You wanna tell me where your soft clothes are?"
"Uh, third drawer," he mumbles as Steve turns the shower on, "on the left side."
"Okay. I'm gonna leave them right outside the door, okay?"
"Thanks."
"What do you want to eat?"
"…can we get burgers from that place near the park?"
"Sure thing, kiddo."
And Peter can't help himself. Steve turns to go and he reaches out and yanks him close, arms wrapped all the way around him—legs too—and his nose buried in the crook of his neck. Steve just wraps him up just as tightly, kissing his temple and everything.
"It's gonna be okay, sweetheart," he whispers, "you're safe, you hear me? I've got you. I'm not gonna let anything happen to you."
"You promise?"
"Yeah, sweetheart, I promise." He holds him until the bathroom starts to fill with steam, gently pulling away with another kiss to his forehead. "Go on, shower. I'll be right outside."
Peter gets in the shower. It's warm and he's sniffling still, because apparently he doesn't know what else to do, but having the water just run over him is…nice. Really nice. It sort of pounds over his neck and shoulders in a really soothing way and it's like all the gross panic attack stuff is just…washing away.
Really nice.
He gets out when his fingers start to go a little pruney and scrubs himself dry with a towel that's also warm because Mr. Stark gave all of them heated towel racks and Steve must've turned his on before he got in, and then he opens the door a crack and finds the soft clothes he was promised and gets into them, going outside to see—
Steve looks up from his seat at his desk, smiling and holding his arms out like there isn't a veritable mound of his favorite candy sitting in the middle of his bed. Peter just sort of stumbles across the room, letting himself collapse into the hug.
"How did you…?"
"Texted Nat. Scolded me for interrupting her date with May until I told her it was for you having a bad time." He rubs his back. "C'mon, burgers should be here in a little bit and you've got a movie to pick."
"That's so much candy."
"You've just had a panic attack." He nudges him gently. "It's allowed. Now, movie, sweetheart."
"Can we watch the really stupid movie with the—the boxing robots?"
Steve chuckles, sitting against his headboard as Peter crawls into his arms. "The one that made you and Tony go on a building spree in the R&D warehouse until Pepper dragged you two out?"
"Yeah, that one."
"Sure. Only if you promise you're gonna explain why all the robots have really obvious design flaws."
"Wait, really?"
Steve gives him a look and gently hits his hand with a bag of sour watermelon gummies. "You think I don't love listening to you be a massive science geek? You know Buck's idea of a good double date was going to a science fair, right?"
Peter laughs. Steve ruffles his hair. A moment later, FRIDAY lets them know their food is downstairs and Steve gets up.
"If it's alright, I'll let you set up the movie, okay? All this new-fangled tech tends to fly over my head." He gives him a wink when Peter scoffs—Steve reprogrammed one of the higher-level combat simulations by himself not two weeks ago—but leans forward to do just that. "I'll be right back."
He really is right back, that's the thing. To the point where Peter's tempted to ask if he really does have super speed in a way that's not just his serum-enhanced athletic prowess, and then he starts thinking about Steve sprinting up to his room with their burgers and now he's laughing, and Steve's narrowing his eyes but he's trying not to laugh too.
"What? What'd I do?"
"I just imagined you were sprinting up here and it made me laugh."
"I climbed the staircase," he says, completely straight-faced, and Peter gawks at him for a moment before he winks again. "Here, eat while it's still warm."
They settle back against the headboard again to start the movie. Steve's arm drapes over his shoulder—the one he bruised, he realizes when fingers stroke almost apologetically over his sleeve.
"Hey, Peter?"
"Yeah?"
"Thank you for letting me help you," he says softly, so softly, "it means a lot to me, sweetheart."
"You're gonna make me cry again."
He feels the smile against his hair as Steve kisses the crown of his head. "Good thing I know what to do now, right?"
Captain Steve Rogers, Peter learns, is an absolute menace of a teddy bear, but he's not that upset about it. Especially when it ends with him and Mr. Stark shadowboxing the two robots they make while Peter referees.
(Mr. Stark says something about calling someone named Logan afterwards, whatever that means. Said he'd get a real kick out of it.)

Can you draw more Anthe? I love their design.
Hi! Thank you so much, I love Anthe that means so much to me that other people like them too! i do actually have a couple of drawings of Anthe i never got around to posting on Tumblr that I can share
The first one is the drawing Ref I made for them for ArtFight (and also just for myself) I honestly might add a bunch of outfits to it bc they keeps getting new outfits lol (@pollie-wog is my main art account, hence the watermark)
The second one is a cleaned up comic-style sketch i did a while back from the first chapter of Until It Doesn't Hurt! (ignore that i didn't really draw their riffle lmao i got lazy). Theres a few scenes that live in my head as like little comics over just fic stuff that im tempted to actually tackle, alas life is busyyyy

I did actually reread all of Until It Doesnt Hurt again just to like revisit Anthe and kinda got hyped to work on it again? I love and miss my ocs lmao gotta give them attention again. Don't hold me to that tho, I do have a real life job and such that takes priority and tends to burn me out creatively, but once ArtFight is over ,,, maybe 👀 (Also entirely possible i re-write the whole thing tho)
#Idk if people necessarily even want more of my ocs/fics etc#im just feeding my own brainworms lol#asks#anon asks#froglet doodles#froglet rambles#navi oc#atwow#atwow fanart#froglet writes fics#atwow oc

MERA, THAT NEW TREY FIC HAS TICKLED MY BRAIN SO GOOD LIKE AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!! ヾ(≧▽≦*)oヾ(≧▽≦*)oヾ(≧▽≦*)o
Surreal horror has always been one of my favorite types of horror because of the unsettling atmosphere and the reality-bending and you wrote it so well! You did amazing when you wrote the dream sequences in DRU, and now to actually read a whole dang fic with the theme?? With Trey of all people???? OTZ OTZ OTZ You've unlocked so many new possibilities with his Doodle Suit, truly the Gaslighting King of all time 👑👑👑
AND THE SYMBOLISM!!!!! please please please please ramble about them if you want-- I'm having so much fun rereading this fic again and again. The Violet Butterwort caught my attention cause isn't that a carnivorous plant? 👀👀 Trapping insects in its leaves like a certain grass-haired man??? 👀👀👀
Anyway, all I'm saying is, Trey is not the only chef around cause you definitely COOKED with this one 🔥🔥✨✨
( ≧ᗜ≦) AAAAA OMG OMG THANK YOUUUUUU!!!!!! ✨ ✨
I'm so happy it tickled your brain! I adore surreal horror in film and writing. There's just so much potential for the craziest of things to happen! Dream sequences or sequences that feel like dreams are some of my favorite things to write. The ones in DRU are also just as surreal. <3 I originally wanted to write this concept with Jade (Kalim was second on my list), but I decided upon Trey in the end because I think he suits the surreal horror vibes so well! Doodle Suit + the power of seamless gaslighting........ what a terrifying combination.
I wanted the story to feel obscure and almost like a trip with the imagery and descriptions. Sort of like the vibes in Alice in Wonderland. Just,,,,, utterly bonkers.
👀 you are very right about the butterwort hehehe!!! As for other symbolisms/details, these are the main ones in the story! I left out some of the symbolisms of various lines or words because that would make for such a long analysis of my own work. ^^;;;
It is under the cut due to length (forgive me)! A warning for mentions of sexual assault and drugging!
✧ the binary can be translated into messages. :)
✧ the feeling of itchiness - feeling as if you don't fit in your body after it's been violated. Feeling like something (trauma/blocked memories) is beneath your skin and you can't get it out no matter what you do. Also, itchy as in discomfort.
✧ grass - this is meant to be Trey. It's how Reader views him throughout the story.
✧ violet butterwort - as you noted, it's a carnivorous plant that traps insects! It's also a symbol of resilience and a common charm used to ward off supernatural evils.
✧ birthday cake with 20 candles - the plot is that Reader and Trey are/were in a relationship and on Reader's twentieth birthday Trey drugged their tea (chamomile) and had his way with them when they were half-conscious. Thus, Reader was never able to indulge in their birthday cake because Trey took it all. Cake can also be a metaphor for Reader's body.
✧ the line "it will take twenty more..." is in reference to the healing process and how it's going to take Reader time to heal from everything.
✧ xylophone chimes/broken glass - the juxtaposition of something sweet-sounding with something jarring.
✧ the white rabbit - a sense of innocence/comfort lost.
✧ "Soups are easy to eat. Easy to slip special sentiments in." - a reference to drugging.
✧ "Soup is what becomes of your brain when your body is too itchy." - disassociation during something traumatic (in this case, sexual assault).
✧ the hedge maze that never has a true exit - the feeling of being lost and trapped and never having a real escape.
✧ the grass bow around the white rabbit's neck - the obsessive and unhealthy hold Trey has on Reader. How he can't let them go.
✧ static - lots of noise and amidst the noise there's Trey, whose own voice is sometimes static and other times soothing enough to cut through the static.
✧ the sequence of "it's here and then there and then here again..." - an allusion to the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland when he's giving Alice directions, but they're all over the place.
✧ every time the grass whispers or speaks - things Trey told Reader when he assaulted them.
✧ "In and out. Out and in. In and out. Out. Out. Out. Incessant itchiness. Get it out." - double meaning for breathing but also the act of sex (thrusting).
✧ the questioning of "that didn't just happen, did it?" - how Reader feels in the aftermath. But also just a general question in response to gaslighting. A consistent questioning of one's reality.
✧ Reader's association of the word "gross" with cake (especially birthday/confetti cake) - it ties into the above and also the part in the story about favorite foods and memories.
✧ teeth falling out - usually, in dream interpretation, this symbolizes a recent loss or mourning of something lost.
✧ hyperdontia - the horror of having a mouth and a voice but never being able to use it because it's so clogged with teeth, so no one will ever listen to or hear the things Reader desperately wants and needs to say.
✧ Frozen Charlotte dolls - Victorian era dolls that could float in the bath. They were also baked into cakes. They're called Frozen Charlottes based on a folk ballad called "Fair Charlotte," which tells the tale of a young girl (Charlotte) on her way to a ball with her lover (Charlie). It's dreadfully cold out, but she frets over the fact that wearing a coat will prevent everyone from seeing her pretty dress. She freezes to death on her way to the ball and arrives in her carriage as a frozen corpse. I think these dolls are fascinating and so cute, so I just wanted to compare teeth to Frozen Charlottes. The description of having a dozen tiny dolls stuck in your throat made for unpleasant imagery, so I wanted to write it!
✧ "A black rabbit blinks up at you with its milky-white eyes. Its nose twitches. Once. Twice. Thrice. A loud gust slithers through the field in which you currently observe, surrounded by decaying greenery and wilted wildflowers. They sprawl endlessly, clawing at the horizon beyond with broken fingers. You watch monochrome tones sway, dried petals flaking off like scabs against a battered, bloodless sky." - this is the same paragraph as seen in the beginning, only certain details have been changed. It's a hint at some sort of cycle that Reader's just only beginning to see. Idyllic beauty is no longer so blinding now that Reader sees what they didn't notice before.

a year on f1mblr
I got tagged in ✨ao3 wrapped: 2024✨ by the delightful @testarossa and I'm going to use it to muse, just a little, on what has been the saving grace of a difficult year – joining this fandom.
Warning: It's gonna get mushy
all the fics I posted on AO3 this year:
don't like a gold rush [galex jealousy] never met a deadline i loved more [landoscar undercover in high school, for @thattropeyouhate] odds and ends [landoscar, oscar/others, post-Monaco GP] positive negatives [galex, models & masturbation] three's a crowd [galex, a mad scientist story, for @motorsport-halloween] the living and the dead [loscar, galex, eldritch horror for the motorsport halloween fest again] no second chances [maxiel sequel to the above, for, you'll never guess, motorsport halloween fest] slow lane, fast lane, parallel lines [pierresteban, post-Brazil GP] out of all proportion [landoscar, fisting] the curse of your company [carcar, magic au for F1 Secret Santa]
and honourable mention to my first f1 rpf fic, posted on December 30 2023:
Imperator [galex, Roman Republic AU]
--
(I've done the stats bit below if you're interested, but I wanted to briefly write out some feelings about this whole thing)
so almost exactly a year ago today I reopened my long dormant tumblr and started posting. I'd been lurking in the F1 RPF corner of AO3 for a little while by that point, and coaxing friends in to join me, but that wasn't enough now. I needed more.
I found possibly the kindest, most creative, tight-knit but welcoming fandom I'd ever seen.
It's a year to the day since I posted my first fic, and AO3 informs me I've written 10 more since then, some tumblr drabbles and snippets (plus a truly horrifying number of wips). Now, I'm not a longfic girl, so it doesn't add up to a huge number – somewhere around 50,000 words – but that's still easily the most I've ever written and published in a year.
It's also been a year of firsts! @strawberry-daiquiris was kind enough to let me riff on her F1 Traitors AU, which was my first time asking another writer if I could play in their space. I don't know if I'd've dared to do that if it wasn't obvious this was such an encouraging and collaborative fandom.
Speaking of collaborations, I got to do my first ever collab with an artist with @midnight-grandprix with this absolutely GORGEOUS historical brocedes au. It was so, so fun riffing with Jace and his piece is stunning, just go look at it right now.
Another first: my first fest! The first was actually @thattropeyouhate (returning to a cinema near you soon!) but clearly I caught the bug. Hypersoft fest, the halloween fest, and f1 secret santa soon followed. An absolute highlight was getting to write my gift for Em, one of the many beloved friends I've got to make in the past year.
In fact, checking my tumblr/discord messages has become one of those perfect small joys of each day. @onadarklingplain, @prettydangrotten, @disarmd, @lagerloutfic – I smile every time I see your names pop up. I reread your comments in the G-docs when it feels like inspiration will never come again. Eugene, come back from the shadowlands soon, please! I miss you!
(Sidebar for Eugene/@sseung00, who surprised me with art of my fics not once, not twice, but THRICE, and every time had me on the floor giggling and kicking my feet. Another first there, and such a special one. I cried.)
And then there's @latecomersprivilege, who is the only reason I had the courage to post imperator and join this fandom in the first place. Who ferried me across Paris as I typed Gax smut into my phone. Who has written some of the most scorchingly hot fics I've ever read. Who is the best friend I could have.
Finally, I wanna thank everyone who sent me a message or a comment or an ask on anon – I've treasured every one of these. It's made me feel like part of something.
I'm really looking forward to next year.
Alright, the stats bit is below.

I don't tag consistently enough for the top tags to make any sense - it's dominated by the horror binge I went on for the immaculately organised Motorsport Halloween Fest. I promise, dismemberment is not actually my major vibe.
Absolutely no pressure on anyone tagged to pick up this game – it's half game, half me sobbing my thanks into a microphone at this point. But if you want to play, please do, and tell 'em Kitty sent you.

Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you've written then pass it on to at least five other writers (except me because obvs I have done it). Spread the self love ❤
Ehe thanks for that! I wouldn't know who to send it to and I get embarrased about asks so let's say I'm sending it to anyone who wants to do it lol
Now my 5 fav fics I've written...
The first one is, UNDOUBTEDLY,
1. Live and Die For Moments That We Stole
My baby (literally, it took me 9 months to write it), my masterpiece. I love what I've done with this fic, I love the characters and the trajectories their lives take, I'm really, truly satisfied with this fic. Which is rare. Obviously if I rewrote it now I might change a few scenes, but as a whole, I love the fic and I'm very proud of it. It was a huge challenge because of the time period I set it in and because of the sheer lenght of that fic, but I did, I wrote it :)
2. Second Chance
I have a weird emotional attachement to this fic, I couldn't explain why but I reread it so often (because yes, I reread my own stuff, what's the point of writing stories I want to read if I don't read them?), and it always puts me in a good mood. I love the idea of a second chance, and of characters GROWING as people before they get that second chance
3. Woundrous and Mystical
I have to put it in the top three. Before I wrote Live and Die it was my favourite fic of mine, I'm just so proud of that story. Baz is my favourite character in this universe and the way that his trauma -psychological and physical- from the coffin is dealt with in canon is something that genuinely upsets me so for the longest time I wanted to write my own version of that, a version of the story where Baz gets to be affected by the fact that he was, you know, locked in a dark box for weeks without food. That story is very dear to me because of that, because it's centered around Baz and his trauma, but also because when I look at my fics as a whole, it's really with this one that I started to get a sense of how I wanted to write the characters and their relationships. The most striking example of that is Niall, the way I wrote Niall in Wondrous and Mystical is the way I've been writing Niall in my other fics since (except Live and Die, funnily enough), like Woundrous and Mystical really shaped my writing
4. The Ephemeral Nature of Flowers
Probably the fic of mine I've reread the most after Second Chance. I just love the vibes of that fic, I like the bittersweet ending, and I especially love the idea that a strong connection can be born in a very short time. Not in a 'love at first sight' kind of way because I don't really like that trope but in a 'we've had one real conversation and I feel like you and I connect in a very special way' kind of way
5. Thirteen Days to Fall in Love With Your Worst Enemy
That fic was soooo much fun to write. Putting our Simon with a Baz that considers him their best friend, and our Baz with a Simon that considers him his best friend + non!binary Baz my beloved <3
Simon getting to see Baz for the person that he truly is and not this evil mastermind he imagines him to be is always my favourite thing to write in fics where they start out disliking each other, and this fic is literally just that, so

January Reading Recap
another fairly busy reading month though I don't think it's a patch on December. didn't actually count though so I could be wrong
Death in the City of Light: The Serial Killer of Nazi-Occupied Paris by David King. This has been on my want-to-read list for a long time and I'm not quite sure what finally pushed me over the edge into reading it, given that I've been off true crime books for a while. Possibly just the fact that I was looking for ebooks available at the library and this one was there. I feel pretty lukewarm on this one - it was interesting, but not particularly compelling as a book.
Sundial by Catriona Ward. I think I like Catriona Ward. Her horror does interesting things, and for whatever reason I found this one particularly compelling, possibly because of the unreliable narrator of it all. Definitely pulled me through at a pretty quick clip needing to know how it fell out, and like other books I've read by her pulled an eleventh hour twist on me that genuinely caught me by surprise but also worked very well.
The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow. This is another book I feel like I can best describe as "fine." It wasn't bad, by any means, I didn't dislike it, but I didn't particularly like it either. It doesn't help that I'm often lukewarm on first person narration (not always, but it takes some effort to win me over on it). On the whole it's not one I regret reading but it's also not one I'd recommend to other people.
Murder Road by Simone St. James. I read a lot of books this month where my overall verdict was "fine", it turns out, and this was another one. An impulse checkout because the ebook was available at the library and I was away from my bookshelves, and it was an entertaining enough horror novel but not one that will linger with me or that particularly impressed me.
The Angel of Indian Lake by Stephen Graham Jones. I finished out the series because I enjoyed the second book enough that I wanted to, but I really just think that it wasn't for me, which makes sense as it's a love letter to slashers and I'm not a slasher fan. I also think that me and Stephen Graham Jones just may not vibe very well, though I will probably keep trying. I don't hold the fact that I was sort of shrug emoji about this book against it, is I guess what I'm mostly saying.
Revolt: The Worldwide Uprising Against Globalization by Nadav Eyal. I'm trying to get back into reading more nonfiction and so far it isn't sticking very well, but this was a very interesting one. I'm still not quite sure how to talk about it as a whole - I think I'm still thinking about it - but I found the argument the author was making compelling and his survey of recent uprisings/protests against globalization from multiple different angles is well pulled together. He draws a lot of seemingly disparate strands of discontent into a whole pattern in a way that I found convincing, if also a little depressing in terms of the "what the fuck now" of it.
The Fox Wife by Yangsze Choo. A thoroughly acceptable book. It was fine, it was pretty fun to read, but it's not going to stick with me and I came out of it feeling a little bit dissatisfied. Which is too bad, because I was excited about the premise. I think mostly what I objected to was the voice of the narrator, which felt casual in a way that I felt didn't mesh with the story being told.
North Star Guide Me Home by Jo Spurrier. Earned its five star rating by making me cry three or four times. My main complaint here is that the canonical poly did not include my pet triad. Which is not surprising but is on some level disappointing. Did kick me into writing about 8k of fic in about three days, which certainly says something. Anyway I'm probably going to be going back and rereading this in the relatively near future.
Ballad of Sword and Wine: Qiang Jin Jiu: vol. 3 by Tang Jiu Qing. And we're into book 2! I definitely feel like I'm following more of the politics in this one the second time around, which makes sense and also makes this a more enjoyable reading experience. I'm also even more delighted by just how unhinged Shen Zechuan is, but in, like, this low key way where people don't initially notice it and it's more of a slow realization that there is something wrong with this man. And Xiao Chiye is into that.
Come With Me by Ronald Malfi. I picked up this book as horror (because the other Malfi I read was) and it was really more of a mystery with a touch of supernatural elements thrown in? But that's not necessarily to say I didn't enjoy the experience; I like a mystery, it's just not what I expected. Not particularly a stand out and I'm not sure I'll seek out more books by this author, except perhaps out of desperation because I'm always looking for more horror somewhere and I didn't dislike either of his books. (I just wasn't particularly impressed with them either.)
Legacy of Kings by C.S. Friedman. Series finished strong! I mean, the weird gender essentialism carried through to a certain extent, which I feel like would probably twig other people more than it did me, but as far as early 2000s fantasy series go I have pretty low expectations on the gender front and this series surpassed those. (Which may be damning with faint praise.) But on the whole I was glad I read this one.
Murder in the Bayou: Who Killed the Women Known as the Jeff Davis 8? by Ethan Brown. Two true crime books in one month after not reading any for years! Shocking. This one was sitting on my shelf for quite a while so it was about time I got around to it, though, and it was a pretty good one. And definitely focused more on, like, systemic injustice than on sensationalistic description of the murders themselves, which I appreciated in a true crime book.
The Witch of Colchis by Rosie Hewlett. Hope springs eternal for Medea retellings and I've still only read one that I actually really liked (Bright Air Black by David Vann), but this one was...at least not objectionable? It beat out my complaint with the last two I've read in that it actually let Medea be nasty. (No fake out murders here!) Still not exceptional, though, and not one I'd excitedly rec to anyone else.
In the Night Garden by Catherynne M. Valente. Definitely the standout book of the month; I'm looking forward to picking up the second one. I always kind of forget how much I love Valente's writing, and the lovely way she wove the interlocking stories together here was so satisfying and created such a lovely fairy-tale texture to the whole book. Also not like anything I've read recently, which is a fun thing for me!
The Atlas Six by Olivie Blake. I had pretty low expectations for this one and it surpassed all of them mostly by virtue of the characters mostly being at least sort of awful people. I'm always weak for a cast of people who are kind of awful being awful together. Little bit of dark academia vibes but at least not for me in an obnoxious way, and I found the plot interesting enough to keep me reading at a pretty good clip, but really I was in this for the characters.
Agent Josephine: American Beauty, French Hero, British Spy by Damien Lewis. I didn't know a lot about Josephine Baker's spying during World War II, so it was fun to learn more about that, but I felt a little like the limitations Lewis had in terms of sources (because of things never written down or not declassified) showed, particularly in the ways in which this book was not insubstantially about the people around Josephine Baker and not the woman herself. Basically: trying to build a book from not quite a full book's worth of material, was a little bit of the feeling I got here.
New Spring by Robert Jordan. True story: I had never actually read this before. And I'm glad I have now! I mean, I wouldn't call it my favorite of the Wheel of Time books, by any means, but it's fun to go back in time and get a bit of Moiraine and Lan from inside their heads at a younger age. As with most prequels, I really can't imagine finding this nearly as satisfying to read if you haven't read the rest of the series itself first, or at least the first few books of it. One reaction it did give me was wanting to know of Moiraine's thoughts during The Eye of the World, but of course that would make that book as a whole less effective.
---
I was currently reading The Atlas Complex to finish out the Olivie Blake series (looking at the average rating for it and going HOO BOY so we'll see how that goes) but then my checkout expired, so...going to be a minute on that one. I'm alternating reads with books of Wheel of Time so while I'm waiting on the library to give me my book back I'm reading The Dragon Reborn (since I've already read the first two in the last...six days, ay yi yi). I have Absolution by Jeff Vandermeer out from the library and we'll see if I can read it without doing a reread of the other Area X books first. It is possible I will not be able to.
Also on my list for the near future is The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell, for book club, but I actually don't have a well-defined reading list for the near future. Maybe Niccolo Rising finally? We'll see what happens.

Hey!:3 Thank you so much for choosing my fic for the club, it's incredibly sweet and I'm glad and grateful that it's remembered and read💙
Since normally I don't get a reason to talk about fics, I'm going to jump this opportunity and tell a bit about the Ritual's "birth story" even if it's not that interesting and few people will see it dhjdhx
Funnily enough, it started not from the ghost part of it or anything, it started in my head with the scene where Billy falls off the bed. And since Supernatural is deeply ingrained in my personality (I started to watch it when I was 13 and there were just 4 seasons out, and I've seen all of them, so) and I really like this kind of travelling supernatural hunters for Billy and Eddie, the only reasonable conclusion to the question of what started Billy so was a ghost. And then the ghost sex scene came to my mind and it was decided. Steve had to be unfortunately dead.
I had a lot of fun with the beginning of the fic, but genuinely the whole thing was very fun to write. I preplan fics, and this had couple less scenes in the plan, but then the ghost cum question happened and a couple of other things, so it became like twice as long as I planned, whoops. I'm pretty sure I actually wrote the whole thing in like two or three days because it really wanted to get out of me, I guess, and I'm pretty happy with how it came together in the end. The ending was also very fun, the way Billy's nervousness manifested made me clench my jaw for so long my teeth hurt a bit dhhdhx
The wiring style in this one isn't actually what I'm used to, and I think I lost it by now, but I really like Billy's voice in here. It's influenced by my all-time favourite Harringrove fic - Yourself or Someone Like You by halfempty on AO3 (I don't remember their handle on Thumblr and the fic itself has been removed from AO3, there's only the yet unfinished second part, but I think it's still possible to find it through the author's Tumblr, I'm not sure, but the fic's amazing) - because I liked Billy's voice there so much (maybe rereading will get me back to writing🤔🤔🤔). Although my fic its way less cool because I can't do this level of stylisation to the period and stuff, it's harder to do when you're writing in a foreign language, plus, well, I still do have my own voice in my writing and this wasn't an attempt to mimic anything shudux
I genuinely did think about the sequel, and I have started it like three or four different times, but the Ritual's story is pretty self-contained, so I'm worried about ruining it, especially with the fact that it won't have sort of the main selling point of this fic, so what's the point of connecting them; plus I would need to find the voice again and figure out an actual plot instead of a couple of incredibly hilarious scenes of Steve explaining everything to Dustin and Robin and everyone (I didn't get to his parents in my mind sujdjd)
Oh, this is a very long message, sorry, I'm just very happy to see this fic still have a life, even considering that it's not new and pretty short<3 Thank you again for choosing it!
💙 billyhargrovesupsidedownshadow
This is so cool to hear! It's not often you get to hear about the behind of the scenes of a fic like this and it's amazing that you have such passion for it!!!
I couldn't not put this fic on the rec list. I've (surprisingly given that this is my main fandom and I adore being here) not read that much ST fanfic, but I've loved Ritual since I first read it and I do come back to reread it a lot 💕 I really do think you did an amazing job on it
And being able to write a whole fic in another language is always so incredible to me (I have phases of trying to pick up a second language but can just never stick with it). The work that must go into that... wow!
Thanks for sharing about it!! I really hope more people will read and love your story like I do
-Squid 💕

It’s your gal sophie here, and I come bearing a sorta long ask. I’m going to pack a lot of things into this so it might feel a bit rambly-
Firstly, CONGRATULATIONS ON THE NOMINATIONS!!!!
You deserve it, really. The amount of time and thought you put into your fics is absolutely unfathomable, and updates literally make my whole week.
Secondly, the latest Dolce chapter has me literally spiraling, I’m so excited for the next one! (take your time btw, there’s still a good two weeks until I start rereading and making theories about what happens next)
(You’re really dropping chapters like Nico drops surprise songs tho)
I also went through your ENTIRE tumblr just now, so here are a few observations I had.
You’ve said that in the Dolceverse Silena is a singer/songwriter under the name VALENTINA. I don’t think you’ve mentioned it in Dolce, so I was thinking that you could just plop that name in there sometime.
The song ‘Free Now’ by Gracie Abrams was suggested for Will on JULY TWELFTH. It’s been half a year, and just now it’s been mentioned in Chapter 43. I would’ve forgotten it at this point
Your first post was on June 27, 2024. It’s been half a year-ish.
Lastly, I have a request. The two chapters of ‘stars, hide your fires’ that have been released are pretty lengthy, and I’ve had to read both chapters over the course of a couple days to finish them. (Still working on the second one.) Could you possibly make them shorter? I know they aren’t always going to be this length, but right now it’s really hard to start them because of the rather intimidating word count.
Love your works, love your writing, and love your personality. Mwah<333
P.S. I know I sound like a stalker, I PROMISE I'M NOT, I’m just really invested. Plus pls excuse me for any weird grammar, I am writing this at one AM.
Hi Sophie!
First off, I love rambles—they are so fun to read and answer. Here's a ramble in exchange :)
I'm still in shock over just how many nominations I got, especially the Author of the Year nomination in my first year of posting fics! LIKE WHAT?!! Whatever the results, I'm super proud and very grateful to everyone who votes <3
The latest Dolce chapter marks the beginning of the very last act of Dolce and that is such a bittersweet feeling. (Also, I smile every time I see your rereading comments, I think you've read Dolce more than I have at this point!)
I don't mind a bit of good natured tumblr stalking, though it might expose how frequently I've pushed back chapter releases lol. Anyway...
Good pick up! So Silena (or VALENTINA) actually had a fairly big part in the secondary storyline for Dolce Dissonance that I decided to cut. So, she won't appear and there is a reason why I've chosen not to mention her at all. I do still have plans for her in the Dolce universe though (eventually).
Has it really been half a year?! That tells you how long Free Now has been sitting in my chapter outline waiting for the latest chapter to be written. Shout out to @solitaire-addict for the great song rec! <3
I started posting my fics on April 20th, 2024 which feels like SUCH a long time ago but really it hasn't even been a full year. And then it took me a few more months to get on tumblr, but I'm so glad I did, I think answering asks might be one of my fav things.
And lucky last: 'stars, hide your fires'. The chapters are intimidating to write, too. But I've been wanting to challenge myself to write a long-chaptered fic for a while now, and Stars felt like the perfect opportunity since its very action heavy. So TLDR, they're kind of intentionally long? Future chapters will continue to average around 10K. This won't the case for all my future fics, I will continue to have a little mix of everything to suit different readers. If you'd like I could post a version of Stars that splits each chapter into 3-4 shorter chapters over on my wattpad? Would that make it less intimidating? Let me know...
Also sorry in advance for when you finish Stars Chapter 2 :) Thank you for the ask and of course, for reading along x
More stories to come,
~ Sarc
