A lot of my colleagues comment on how good my Japanese is because I can use interjections pretty well despite the fact my actual speaking is garbage. I always know when to say "えっ" and "やばい" and "え〜そうなの" and "いえいえいえ" and "そっか" and "そうだね" and every single time they're like "wow! You're like a native speaker!" and I'm like okay but I can't form an actual sentence that's more than 4 words long and if you make me use grammar my brain will catch fire

People commenting “I was in middle school when Taken King came out”, “I was in high school when that dropped”, “How were you that young?? I was in my 20’s”, “I was almost 30!!” on my elementary school Oryx post is so jarring, but not surprising

It took me so long to formally join the Destiny fandom because I was always so much younger than people. I’ve been into Destiny since the drop of D1; this game has been my whole life since I was 7!!! That’s right, SEVEN!! 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7!!!

So to celebrate me being a babbling baby compared to everyone, here’s more of me tattling on myself!

To quell concerns, no, I didn’t play by myself! Me and my dad had 2 PlayStations, so I’d steal my sister’s account and play with him in a different room or just watch him play when I got home from 1st grade (yep, that’s how young I was)

Every recess, I got out a notebook I had just to write fanfiction about Crota and Oryx while forcing my friends to write with me. They had no idea of Destiny, but they tried their best to support my obsession. (One of them drew Oryx, Crota, and Me, but they made the former 2 people so I had to lecture them on how much cooler aliens were 😭)

My dad got sent the Game Informer Taken King magazine, so I snuck it away and may or may not have kissed it a time or two

My teacher was playing something on YouTube for us and a Taken King ad came on, causing me to let out a shriek of pure delight in front of everyone and have to move my color down for misbehavior

I cried so hard over the Taken King and Son YouTube video, it wasn’t even funny

I would put the Book of Sorrows and Destiny lore cards on my reading log for school since I spent hours reading them

Used to watch MyNameisByf on the school computers when I was supposed to be doing educational lessons

Told everyone I had to graduate early so that I could work at Bungie before Destiny’s 10 year saga was up

There are more stories, but for my dignity, I will not disclose those.

Destiny truly molded me during my formative years and was my first fandom, hence my passion for the game. I always wanted to interact more with Destiny fans, but everyone was always so much older than me 😭

i always wonder what it’ll take for how fat i am to get acknowledged. the only time ive ever had it publicly or privately called out (besides in kink situations) was in 9th grade. i didn’t go to anime club because im not into anime (im still not) even though i told this dude i would be there lol.

in light of recent canon academic conversations, riz adaine gorgug study sessions have never been more real to me. gorgug helps riz + adaine get out of their own heads when they’re overworking themselves, riz + adaine help gorgug with alternative studying methods because he learns best through visuals + experience. fabian’s there occasionally when he has a particularly difficult assignment/test but he makes them all swear never to speak of it in order to protect his “image.” kristen has shown up exactly twice: once for advice on a group project that was two months overdue & once to just lay on the floor and relax for an hour before leaving. fig didn’t know the study sessions were happening until sophomore year & now keeps getting monthly bans because every time she shows up she ends up accidentally distracting riz + adaine. also, sometimes after/in the middle of really long study sessions riz adaine & gorgug go to basrar’s together to unwind but fabian kristen & fig Are Not Invited (they do still text to ask if anyone wants something brought back from basrar’s. they’re not heartless, after all).

Lizard Book Report 📚🦎

The Young Elites by Marie Lu

The story follows Adelina Amouteru, a malfetto - cursed as a child with magic powers after a sickness in the kingdom - and her dark, violent journey as she desperately tries to find a place where she belongs in a world that only seems to want to use her.

Writing Style: 9/10

The author's writing style is colourful, fluid, and descriptive, which makes it very easy to picture exactly the image she is trying to convey. It shifts between short sharp sentences and lingering long sentences where it needs to. It's the main reason I enjoyed the book.

I take one point off because it is written in first person present tense, which for me is a slightly jarring style of narration. Included in the removed point is the slight let down of most of the character voices blending together in dialogue.

Plot: 5/10

The general concept of the plot is very good and also very familiar - a group of young rebels with unique abilities fight against a greater power (in this case, called the Inquisition Axis) trying to destroy them and maintain the status quo.

However, I found it a little too...nothing in the middle. I was hoping that the twist introduced in the middle of the book (Adelina is forcibly recruited as a spy, and doesn't choose to share it with her new 'friends') would excite me, but it didn't. I was flipping pages, skipping certain parts to try and get to something good that I didn't find until the very last couple of chapters.

The biggest issue I had was that it all felt a little one note. MC is being used by her father, MC is being used by the group she joins (The Daggers), MC is being used by the Inquisition. It feels like she never really makes any true connections with the people around her which I could feel as the story came to a bittersweet, tragic ending.

The end of the story sets up Adelina's little sister as the only real connection she has, as written in the book: "...kindness with no strings attached, had only ever come from Violetta." But we only ever learn about Violetta through flashes of memory and short moments at the beginning of the book which didn't really paint her as this amazing sister, the connection that Adelina was searching for

Maybe I'm jaded, but it just didn't click for me.

Whump Content: 10/10

This book is absolutely chock full of hardcore whump from the first page. The main character is confined in a jail cell, she is almost executed, she has her chin tilted up by a multitude of characters both good and evil. There is fighting whump, there is magic exhaustion whump, there is permanently disfiguring whump, all that and more is in there and its ripe for the picking.

Enjoyment: 5/10

I enjoyed the book for the style of its writing, so much that I missed my bus stop when I was reading it on the bus. But the characters - mostly the main character - let it down for me pretty badly. Average to maybe slightly above average.

Overall Lizard Score: 6/10

If you can get past the slightly wonky pov tense, and are able to connect with the main character - in a way that I couldn't - I imagine this would be a nice little read given all the whump included. The author is a New York Times Bestselling author of another series, clearly not this one.

- I mentioned before that I think Izzy is the one who thinks everything is a date, her preferred love language is quality time so for dates Duke always likes to walk home with her or just sit in a park together

- more often than not they will lose track of time and talk for hours. they never seem to run out of things to talk about either, from that movie Duke watched last night to the dumb meme Izzy scrolled past this morning or even a surprisingly heated debate over the objectively best pokemon (eelektross vs lucario)

- they'll always end up talking in the weirdest places too (like the middle of a roundabout or the elevator to a fancy hotel neither of them have heard of) but they don't really mind or notices when Izzy's hour 2 of her 'why all her partners need to binge watch cowboy bebop on their next movie night' rant or Duke ranking all his fictional crushes (Storm is number one followed closely by Ben 10)

- Duke and Dax have the most similar music taste of any of the group, most of their dates are looking around music store (cuz when your in a poly relationship of five at least one of you collects records) or going to live gigs together. Duke has consistently been to every single frown clown gig (except a few that he missed due to missions). Dax usually invites any of his partners in the audience onto the stage during the last song of every show and at this point any frown clown fans or regulars in the gotham hardcore scene recognise at least one or two members of the polycule.

- even tho Duke and Dax have the most similar music tastes Duke still prefers metal while Dax prefers punk music.

- Duke and Dax's first kiss was definitely at a batman's @#$& concert

- Dre and Duke butt heads most out of all the polycule, they don't really connect in the same way as the rest of the partners, and didn't really consider themselves dating until the polycule had been around for about a year.

- despite this they did work hard to improve their relationship and ended up falling for each other just as they fell for their other partners.

- Duke and Dre's dates are usually in the gym or doing some kind of physical activity, it started with Dre teaching Duke boxing when they were both robins and later Duke showed him fighting combos he practiced with Cass, eventually they started some different sports like rock climbing and trampolining (idk if those are considered sports tho) they always have this level of competition between them that they don't really have with any of their other partners. but it's sorta Duke and Dre's weird brand of love

- i think it was in my last post i mentioned that Duke has the weirdest date ideas, well Riko isn't far behind.

- a lot of the time their dates start out normal. they just rarely stay that way.

- like the time when they planned on having just a regular lunch date and ended up with them in metropolis, head to toe in superman merch and getting storage looks on the bus back to gotham. or that time they tried to recreate iconic kisses from movies and they ended up stuck on the roof of the wayne enterprises building with Harley Quinn and a box set of Powerpuff girls.

- people outside the polycule never believe them when they explain their dates to them but Izzy, Dax and Dre have gotten used to the special brand of chaos that comes with Riko and Dukes dates

Had an opportunity to talk about my goal to read The Anatomy of Melancholy in 2025 with my best friend's brother & his girlfriend. She's a literature teacher, so she recognized it and seemed really impressed by the goal. She's was like "Wow! Isn't it like 1500 pages? That's a really good goal for the year, please keep me updated on your progress!" and when I got really serious and said "I'm GOING to read it entirely. It's my White Whale." she laughed & started clapping & nodding at me.

As someone who was a nerdy prude Christian in high school, I was SO worried that Grace Chasity was just gonna be another one note "all Christians are uptight crazy bigots" stereotype character (bc I feel like that's ALL we get in horror). But even though she is crazy, they actually made her a very dynamic character and super fun. I'm impressed.

I still don't quite get her change at the very end but her giving up her chastity to save everyone from Max was SUCH a damn power move and honestly, I think God would approve.
