I understand that literature nerd Jason Todd is kind of overblown in fanon compared to it's actual presence in canon (a few issues during his pre (and post?)crisis Robin tenure that highlight it) BUT consider that I think it's hilarious if the unhinged gun toting criminal has strong opinions on poetry
#ramblings of a lunatic#dc comics#Jason Todd#batfamily#it's just a fun quirk! it's a fun lil detail and I simply cannot slight ppl for enjoying and incorporating it into works#like obviously jason isn't the only one. I'm a big believer in the batfam having over lapping interests they refuse to bond over#i know dick canonically used the robin hood stories (which are pretty flowery in their language far as i can tell) as inspo for Robin#and i know babs was a librarian and even tho her area of nerddom is characterized as more computery she probably knows quite a lot-#-about literature as well#duke is a hobbyist writer i believe? i saw a fan mention that- which if so is great and I hope he's also a nerd#(i mean he is canonically. i remember him being a puzzle nerd in his introduction. but i mean specifically a lit nerd)#damian called Shakespeare boring but also took acting classes so i think he's more of a theatre kid.#Tim's a dropout and i don't think he's ever shown distinct interest in english lit and i can't remember for Steph?#I'm ngl my brain hyperfocused on musician Steph i forget some of her other interests I'm sorry (minus softball and gymnastics!)#and then Cass had her whole (non linear but it's whatevs) arc about literacy and learning to read#went from struggling to read in batgirl 00 to memorizing Shakespeare in 'tec and is now an avid read in batgirls!#she's shown reading edgar allen poe but we don't know if it's his short stories or his poems#point to all of the above being: i know Jason's not the only lit nerd in the batfam#but also i do need him to be writing poetry in his spare time and reading and reviewing it#jason at the next dead robins society meeting: evening folks today I'll be assigning all of us poems based on laika the space dog#damian and steph who have been kidnapped and brought to jasons warehouse to hangout: LET US GO BITCH#speaking of^ random poem i think jason would like: space dog by alan shapiro#wake up one morning in an unfamiliar more mature body with a profound sense of abandonment. the last four lines. mmm tasty

personally I think the best thing that the joker sequel did for me was expose the exact degree to which how much of internet/public criticism is not based on genuine analysis of the content using social and cultural resources to support an actual argument but is actually adult children whining because someone took their batman toys and put them up on a high shelf for once and they, as a consumer, feel like they're entitled to throw a tantrum about it
#one of those 'if everyone's a critic no one will be' kind of situations#like every day I have to see 30 youtube thumbnails saying 'joker 2 bad' and then they say 'this scene was bad' and the only evidence they#give for their reasoning on it is 'it didn't make sense' and I want to turn into my english teacher and give reading comprehension question#like. if something doesn't make sense then why not examine the deeper reasoning that led you to that conclusion? why not then also entertai#the circumstances in which the situation would be plausible? you know? find some actual answers? but that is too much to ask of people#truly the gulf between a really well educated opinion analyzing the actual content rather than knee-jerking and saying 'I don't like it' is#far and fucking wide. I literally have only found ONE video essay that actually does a decent job talking about theme and the cohesion#between the two movies about the gulf between reality and fantasy which I thought was REALLY a good and thoughtful take on it all#but the rest of them are just like 'OOOOH MOVIE BAD MOVIE SO BAD'#like. you can't just say that!!! I know it's the internet and it's edged your ego enough to make you think you can#but some of us would like you to unpack your actual reasoning. but you do not have the capacity for that. clearly#go back to ninth grade for god's sake like this is a really basic skill for actually analyzing narrative and film and you do not have it#joker#folie a deux#joker 2#arthur fleck

Found a disturbing and deeply patriarchal Swedish folk ballad, Maria Magdalena (Types of the Swedish Ballad B 16, if you want to look it up, nr. 43 in Sveriges Medeltida Ballader), which originates as a ballad from Catholic Sweden that illustrates Purgatory (I think) - in its origin, it's explicitly about Mary Magdalen, who encounters Jesus, who knows her sin (that she has birthed three children, two with a father - in other words, a married man - and one with his brother), and he condemns her to seven years wandering the forest, sleeping on hard mountains, drinking only the dew and eating only the bitter shoots of birch trees, and with only bears and lions for company. On the eighth year, she walks to church (!) and encounters her Saviour ('sin frälseman') again, who asks her how she found her drink, food, bedding and company, respectively, where she responds positively to all of them, and Christ grants her a spot in Heaven on account of her noble bearing of her righteous punishment; end of ballad.
Of course, there is no indication that the men who slept with her and shared her sin are ever punished.
A later version from the early 19th century, in what seems like a competition over the years in who can most emphasise the depths of her (and her alone, obviously) sin, is way more grim. In this version, she (it is no longer clear that it is Mary Magdalene, just a woman called Magdalena) makes it clear that she has had two children, one with her own brother and one with her father, which she has drowned in blackest river and reddest sea, for which reason he completely refuses her touch (she is apparently so sullied by her being the victim of the worst kind of abuse that the Redeemer won't touch her). She is condemned once again to wandering the forest for seven years with only dew to drink and birch to eat and moss to sleep on, which she endures, after which she once again meets Christ, who asks her how she found her punishment. She responds that the dew was as though she was drinking angels wine, the moss was as bedding of clearest silk, and you get the idea. Jesus grands her leave to ascend into heaven 'because of her strong faith', which is clearly a nonsensical tacking on of Lutheran doctrine onto what is clearly a Catholic song - it's not her faith, but her suffering, which actually redeems her.
I might sing it at some point, I really like the tune.

AFTERMARE WEEK: day 3- light and heavy
a wedding ring; usually made of gold, platinum, or silver. it's given by one partner to the other as a symbol of commitment
such a small and deceptively light object should not be very heavy, but that does not prevent it from holding the crushing weight it's promise implies.
aftermare week is hosted by @bluepallilworld

Friendly reminder that Francesco Coppino and Prospero di Camulio, contemporaries who were literally getting their information from predominantly Yorkist circles, were both explicitly clear that it was Henry VI who decided to surrender Berwick to Scotland.
Camulio: "King Henry has given away a castle [town] called Berwick, which is one of the keys of the frontier between England and Scotland." Coppino: "[Scotland has] received from the same Henry the town of Berwick, on the frontiers of Scotland, which the Scots have long claimed as their right from the English, as the excellently well furnished guardian of their frontiers, and the place to which King Henry repaired as an asylum after the battle."
The idea that Margaret of Anjou was principally involved in the surrender, or that she was the one who actually made the decision, is based on nothing but assumption. Two direct contemporaries, both speaking of ongoing events as they unfolded, who were both getting information from Yorkist-held England, both clearly believed it was Henry who was responsible for this course of action. Neither of them mention Margaret. Sure, you can argue that it was merely rhetorical, and that they were simply automatically attributing such an important decision to the King rather than the queen - but rhetoric is nonetheless extremely important and helps us understand how historical figures were perceived at the time. Margaret's enemies would surely not have hesitated to broadcast her involvement had it actually been true, and Coppino in particular had shown no qualms about criticizing her in favor of the Yorkists before. If she was genuinely believed to have been responsible, and if the Yorkists were actually claiming that she was at the time, I see no reason why Coppino or Camulio would not have emphasized her role in their letters. What these samples instead indicate is literally the opposite: that their contemporaries - probably including the Yorkists who were putting out the information that Coppino and Camulio reported - actually believed that Henry was the one making the decision. I think it's a very large and very unnecessary stretch to go against actual evidence and claim otherwise by placing the responsibility on Margaret instead.
Additionally, these small samples may also reveal what people at the time - once again including the Yorkists - actually thought of Henry's role in the war on a broader level, away from direct Yorkist propaganda which would obviously and perhaps understandably seek to de-emphasize it: namely, that Henry was perceived as the one making decisions and deciding the courses of action for his own side.

#henry vi#margaret of anjou#english history#my post#I want to make a longer post detailing the clear indications we have that Henry *was* perceived as the active decision maker of his side#which indicates that contemporaries did not really think that there was some kind of giant 'role-reversal' between him and MoA#but until then the gist is:#after Henry was rescued in 1461 contemporary letters clearly emphasize his own actions; they mostly did not attribute decisions to Margaret#we also know he and Margaret separated when she headed off to the continent;#that he seems to have been involved in border-raids against Yorkist England;#*and* that he avoided capture until 1465#if Henry was entirely passive throughout it all and entirely dependent on Margaret to make decisions#I do not understand how any of this would have been possible#Instead Henry & Margaret seemed to have had more of a partnership with Margaret focusing on gaining international support#which she was very well-suited for given her powerful foreign connections#& with her taking on leadership in his absence (mainly due to imprisonment/incapacity) rather than all the time/when they were together#and like I said when it comes to Berwick contemporaries clearly believed it was Henry's decision#but also like. let's hypothetically assume that Margaret was the driving force behind it. please think of this situation logically.#whoever's idea it was Scotland was very obviously going to want a proper confirmation from the *king*#who was. yk. the actual authority of the country#even if Margaret was the one encouraging this surrender Henry's approval and agreement would have still been required#if not by the Lancastrian party then by Scotland#and again this is assuming that Margaret was actually the driving force behind it. there's no indication that she was#but ultimately contemporaries very clearly believed *Henry* was responsible#we don't know what MoA actually thought of it or what her actual involvement was (she could may encouraged it; she may have misliked it;#she may have simply been told after the decision had already been made)#but ultimately even in the most extreme case - which is contradicted by actual evidence - the final say would have been Henry's#it would be nice if this was reflected by historians?

you ever write up a combination of words you're really proud of at the time bc you think it's vivid but it's actually so atrocious that you remember it eight years later bc it's burned itself into your long-term memory? just me?
#i'm literally laughing my entire ass off rn. i can't believe i found this fic i wrote at 15 and orphaned when i came to my senses abt both#my complete inability and total aversion to writing first person as well as the fact that the english language should never have been#subjected to its words being done dirty like this 😭#also i straight up fucking LIED in the authors note??? i said i'd broken my knee as a kid which is categorically false. i fell down some#stairs and banged it up and it's a tiny bit weak ig but i didn't break it? all any teens born after y2k know is eat hot chip and lie...#still not over the first line... the flip flop bit i remembered but i'd COMPLETELY forgotten 'a shriek seeped out of my throat'. girl. what.#how does a shriek seep exactly? the world may never know...#and the use of 'groped' is also sending me 😭 AND 'crash bash whump thump' girlllll send help holy shit i can't stop coughing & laughing#the rest of the fic isn't quite this bad but it's very purple yet ineloquent and rough. it's a good reminder of how much i've improved and#honestly i'd rather read this utterly amature fic bc it's at least charming in its lack of skill rather than infuriating like some of my#oneshots that are still on my page bc they're more comprehensible but just bad enough to make me cringe. getting mad at this oneshot would#be like getting bad at a kid's stick figure drawing. like. it's just kinda cute to see someone starting out on their creative journey#my old sw oneshots on the other hand are like the awkward growing pains of puberty. you just can't help but wince at the reminder#this is okay to reblog btw bc it's objectively hilarious and i don't mind ppl finding humor in it#len speaks

Do the witcher books have a website like that one ASOIAF site where you can look up any text from the books, because I’m convinced you must have access to something like that
i looked it up since i didn't know what you were talking about, i am very impressed with a search of ice of fire! not only for its funny pun name, but wow! sadly, i don't have access to anything like that for the witcher. and i'm not sure how you would be able to do something like it without getting sent a cease-and-desist from orion/gollancz. (i mean, i worry just posting excerpts on here sometimes lol, though it is fair use as i'm contributing my own commentary).
something similar which may help is if you have the books on e-book/PDFs, you can search for specific words. this helps me sometimes, but also kind of fucks me because my initial exposure to the witcher was via fan-translations... so how i remember a phrase is not always how it was officially translated. (for example: angouleme saying: "good friends," but it was, officially, "solid mates").
so most of the time, it's faster to just remember where a scene happened, grab/pull up the book, turn or scroll to the page, then grab the specific quote you were thinking of.
