i was wondering if you could share some of your favourite wlw/sapphic ships? i really enjoy your queer content in general and so id love to hear some of your takes on sapphic subtext etc :)) hope you’re doing well!

Hello anon! It’s 2AM and I should be asleep but instead I’m going to answer this ask. Partially because I tend to be perpetually behind on messages / asks (shout out to everyone I have yet to answer, I am so sorry), both because I’m often busy and incapable of brevity. I do not want that to happen to you, so here I go!

Here are some wlw/sapphic ships I love!!

• Carol/Maria from Captain Marvel. As far as I am concerned, they are canonically wives. It’s not subtle! I wrote a meta thread about how the themes of the movie are enhanced if you read it as a story about Carol as a gay woman. Also, every time I remember that “Kiss Me Deadly” is the song they sing together in karaoke, I freak the fuck out. I firmly feel like Stevebucky and Carolmaria are the 2 greatest love stories of the MCU movies and it’s astonishing how similar they are, too. I’ll never forgive the Marvel fandom for sidelining Maria in favorite of shipping Carol/Valkyrie because of insidious colorism. I wrote a mini fic about Maria feeling insecure when Carol meets Valkyrie to work out my frustrations about that too!

• Nomi / Amanita from Sense8. (In all ways but physical, Amanita is MY wife, actually.) I feel like they’re one of the coolest, healthiest, and most badass relationships on screen :’) They make me so fucking happy and I will never get over how ride or die they are for each other.

• Andy / Quynh from The Old Guard. I am crossing ALL of my fingers that they expand on them in the sequel, because I felt there was very strong subtext (that was barely subtext) there, and as far as I know they were together in the comics. Big shout out to Andy wearing Quynh’s necklace, for example. (I’d need to rewatch the movie to get lost back in the sauce and discuss them more because it’s been awhile)

• I have ships from Black Sails that I enjoy discussing in depth, but those are spoilers! (I tend to only talk Black Sails spoilers on @freedom-in-the-dark or my side twitter gaypiracy)

• This is fairly new, but I am eyeballing Katy / Xialing from Shang-Chi. There was subtext there too, I feel. Katy definitely seemed to have a crush on Xialing, and there was tension in the moment when Xialing saved her. I’m hoping they expand on that dynamic in future movies!

• I never finished this show (even though I meant to), but Cosima / Delphine in Orphan Black were near and dear to my heart a long time ago, so I can’t not mention them. It’s been a very long time since I’ve thought about them but they were a big deal.

• In the “fuck the CW” category: YEARS ago, back when I watched Arrow, Nyssa/Sara was extremely important to me. I adored them, and then of course they killed Sara (and later forced Nyssa to fake marry Oliver). I was also into Lexa/Clarke from The 100 during that era—because who wasn’t, though I didn’t love them as a ship as strongly as many people did—and we all know where that went.

That’s it for main ones, I think. Sorry if that disappoints! I’m especially sorry that I don’t have much meta to offer, unfortunately, simply because most of what I’m mentioning is either explicit canon so it didn’t involve subtext hunting or I watched it before I got super involved in media analysis. I’m planning on watching Killing Eve when it’s complete as long as it sticks the landing, and I know that show is going to eat my brain hahaha. Some of my friends are super into it and have sent me a couple clips here and there and I’ve unintentionally written meta off the cuff and they lose their shit. I’m looking forward to devouring it eventually.

As for ones I’m just sort of casually into... I never finished Legend of Korra (not yet anyway), but I loved and appreciated Korrasami because again, who doesn’t. Similarly, I could get behind Kate Bishop / America Chavez in my Young Avengers days, and Peggy / Angie from Agent Carter. From very far away, I salute the Supergirl fandom, because I know Kara/Lena would make me foam at the mouth if I was at all into watching it and I’m rooting for those crazy kids.

Movie recs:

Portrait of a Lady On Fire (which I know most people have seen by now), though warning that it’s very bittersweet or sad. Please, PLEASE watch Colette if you have not; that movie is very important to me, and it is both sapphic and gender. Likewise, please watch Professor Marston and the Wonder Women, which is based on a true story and involves an m/f/f polyamorous relationship.

Niche fic recs because people deserve to read these:

Sharon/Natasha fic that is vastly underrated and I love it, and Eleven/Max fic from Stranger Things that lives rent free in my brain. (I think Will/Mike is endgame in that show and the parallels between Will and Eleven do make me wonder if they’ll make her gay too.) These are literally the only fics for either of these ships I have ever read. And of course, this genderbent f/f 1950s Johnlock case fic which will kick your ass. You’re welcome in advance.

Outlining or wing it: depends on the fic. AU? Mostly going to be outlined, if it’s a particularly complex au (like IB or the 100/Sense8 au) then I need to be more detailed especially with research. Oneshots or prompts tend to be more loosey-goosey winging it

Excited about any upcoming works: Oh of course! I’m finally getting to the very exciting years in IB (1942 has a lot happening), I’ve got the Flower Shop Part 2 which I ADORE this au, and also a particularly angsty-ish au that is definitely going to be a little outside of my comfort zone, but I’m looking forward to stretching those writing muscles

1. tell us about your current project(s) – what’s it about, how’s progress, what do you love most about it?

i pulled open all of my WIP google docs for this and my laptop started whirring ominously, lmao. this is going to be a Little Long but i love talking about my wips so who cares!! (under the cut because EXCERPTS)

guys and dolls but gay - very, very casual rewrite of guys and dolls if sky masterson was a woman. i’m loving how chill i’m being about this one because it’s so much fun to not have to worry how i’m going to write lyrics in a not-weird way and just focus on the story. this one’s first because it’s theoretically closest to being finished.

sky, laughing: “oh? people. all the people you turn down every day. well, i imagine there’s someone out there that’ll catch your eye.”

sarah, stiffening: “...yes, there will be.”

sky: “and what might this person be like?”

sarah: “he will not be a gambler, for one.”

sky does not miss the pointed pronoun. “i’m not interested in what he won’t be, i’m interested in what he will be.” she sits down on the desk, in a pointedly masculine pose, and sets her fedora next to her - at her most Hot Queer, basically. “how will you know when he gets to you?”

my fic for the aos rarepair fic exchange - i can’t give any plot or ship details, for obvious reasons, but it’s 1.3k and i’m having fun with it!

steven roadtrip of destiny - canon divergent fic set at the end of steven universe future where steven goes on a roadtrip instead of... canon. it deals with some heavy emotions and it’s also a character study so it’s tentatively shelved until i get around to rewatching suf. but i am projecting on steven like crazy and it’s really, really cathartic. it’s taught me a lot about myself too lmao.

He’s never been anonymous before. He kind of likes it. It means he can fold his arms on the table and put his head down without Pearl worrying about his posture, or someone asking him if something’s okay.

In the last few months, he’s grown to hate people asking him how he’s doing, or if he’s okay. He always ends up lying, because he doesn’t want to worry them, and he ends up feeling worse.

Probably because it’s more of him supporting other people without supporting himself.

He should have told someone how he was feeling. He should have reached out. Sadie could’ve helped him. Lars would’ve listened. Connie would have hugged him and then found him the appropriate mental health professional.

(God, Steven wants a hug. Also the appropriate mental health professional? Whoever that would be.)

aos ds9 au - i’ve posted a LOT about this already and i want to keep the plot a surprise but fsk is in this and married and half the cast is aliens, what else do you need in life.

“Good morning,” says Jemma, coming into the room with her hair wet and her uniform crooked. “Hello, darling.”

“Hi,” says Daisy, turning her face up for a kiss. Jemma obliges absently as she walks past, looking around the room.

“Has anyone seen my hair clip?”

“No,” say Fitz and Daisy in unison.

and of course, last but never least in my heart, chapter 3 of the magnum opus - writing this is on hold until my brain decides to stop hitting me over the head at every possible moment, but there’s like... 2k written so far? it’s. it’s going.

“Yeah, yeah,” says Coulson, and makes quick work of the right gauntlet. It’s only halfway through the left one that his fingers slow and he says, quietly, “Simmons designed these, didn’t she?”

She lets out a quick breath. “Yeah.”

He stays quiet for a few more seconds, finishing up the last of the straps, making sure they’re tight enough. Finally, he says, “She should be helping you with these.”

Daisy pulls her arms back and swallows down some words, or maybe a couple of feelings, or maybe a sob. “Yeah, well.”

2. tell us about what you’re most looking forward to writing – in your current project, or a future project

the last sentence of the magnum opus!!!!!!!!!!

no, lmao, i’m gonna try to be serious. i really, really want to write some librarians fic in the near future? also MORE OF THE SENSE8 AU. i’m DYING to write some stuff about that. especially sam’s cluster, for some reason? Let’s Make Him Suffer (Comedically)! one day i’m gonna finish that list of what cluster/situation each song is about and then it’ll be over for all of us!

3. what is that one scene that you’ve always wanted to write but can’t be arsed to write all of the set-up and context it would need? (consider this permission to write it and/or share it anyway)

i spent about eight months imagining a scene where riza hawkeye was really injured and mustang was holding her in his arms (basically the promised day scene but with more privacy) so does that count?

hmm, just for some other possibilities: glinda telling dorothy about elphaba, laura somehow seeing or speaking to natasha during catws, a good omens au of the good place (specifically the ”i don’t even like you!” / “you doooooooo” scene), kencyrath au of star wars (ESPECIALLY THIS ONE, except setting up the first scene alone would take 7k, but i want to talk about leia and luke and their MESSED UP TRUST ISSUES in this au).

oh, also, something about star trek tng where jean-luc and beverly and jack were in love and then jack died and picard left. more specifically a scene set during the pilot episode where jean-luc very cordially offers beverly the option to transfer off the enterprise, that he wouldn’t dream of holding it against her, and beverly very cordially telling jean-luc to go fuck himself. i want to write 30k of that broken triad. i want it so bad. i dream of that fic. maybe one day when i find myself with a completely empty month or two, i’ll binge all of tng and Write Some Stuff.

4. share a sentence or paragraph from your writing that you’re really proud of (explain why, if you like)

since you and i have tww in common, i’m gonna do a tww fic! otherwise i’d have to reread literally every fic i’ve ever written, lmao.

(this is long but i put this post under the cut so i have RIGHTS. also consider this a sneak peek for the j/d fic in the sense8 au?)

“It’s okay,” says Helen. She sits for a moment in silence, seeming thoughtful. “The Congressman and I are in the same cluster,” she says eventually. “I’d- I supposed that’s easier on the Secret Service?”

“Yes,” says Donna. “The-”

She stops herself from saying anything further. President Bartlet and the First Lady aren’t exactly quiet about who’s in their cluster, especially with senior staff, but that doesn’t mean she should go talking about it in an unsecured room in LA, of all places.

To cover for her blunder, she gives up something else: “The same with Josh. They got really lucky with him, actually. It’s just him and me, so they won’t have to worry about anyone threatening the Chief of Staff through the barista in the local Starbucks.”

Helen looks up from the Ohio numbers she’d drifted back to, a slow smile creeping up on her face. “Josh is in your cluster?”

“Uh-” says Donna, feeling like national security wasn’t worth whatever she’s just blundered into. Oops. “Josh- Josh is my cluster, ma’am.”

She catches her mistake the second it’s out of her mouth, but Helen doesn’t call her on it, more focused on other revelations. “No wonder you two look at each other the way you do!” she says, sounding delighted. Donna shuts her eyes, praying for this to go away. It’s not that she’s ashamed of Josh - it’s just so, so complicated, and other people never think about how difficult it was. Still is.

i’m just... i really liked the idea of donna fumbling and having to reveal this to cover up for what else she was going to say? i don’t know why i’m so charmed by this. i think it’s because it would be impossible in the show - you can’t show what someone was going to say on television, not without a lot of setup and very careful scripting. it’s just a really fun situation to write about and i’m really proud of this conversation in general.

also helen santos was a dream to write and i love her a lot. i kind of want to write one of the fics in the series about her and her cluster solely because like... look at her. she’s a delight in literally every scene. i love her.

5. what character that you’re writing do you most identify with?

daisy johnson!!! i love writing daisy johnson!!!! she is the most adhd character i’ve ever written and i literally just have to transcribe my own inner monologue and it works perfectly!!!!!

Swing shift: 1600 hours to 2400 hours. Daisy always ends up getting back to her quarters at like 0030 hours, when Jemma is asleep and Fitz is reading some kind of technical journal. Then she has to eat replicated pizza, alone, and freshly replicated pizza is actually pretty hot but it feels cold at that time of night, like, spiritually.

6. what character do you have the most fun writing?

...whoops i literally just answered that lmao. uh. i also really love writing sky masterson in the guys and dolls fic? she’s just weaponized hot queerness in a suit and i love her for it. she is intentionally trying to seduce this repressed lesbian and it’s really funny and also really hot of her and it’s so much fun to write.

also, i wrote chidi for the tgp fic and it was possibly the most fun i’ve ever had with a pov, although that was also because i was purposefully trying to mimic the tone of the show. i still think that line about michael and a grenade is, like, the funniest i have ever been in my life. but chidi’s panic was surprisingly easy to write? all of tgp’s characters have such STRONG voices, it makes writing fic ridiculously easy as long as you don’t get stuck on a plot for six months.

7. what do you think are the characteristics of your personal writing style? would others agree?

oof, this one is ALWAYS tricky. uh? uhh?? i’m going to ruin everything by saying this but i basically alternate between the same two sentence structures and i am really frustrated about it. i also alternate between the same two styles of endings and i always use the same beginning (set scene, main character pov, thoughts-as-exposition, back to scene).

BUT ON A MORE POSITIVE NOTE i like to talk about emotions and relationships and character development!! i have my “queer subtext goggles” superglued to my face, lmao. i like to think about how characters must have felt about things in canon and how it must’ve influenced them. i like making people deal with the consequences of their actions, especially how it’s influenced they themself. i also just really, really like writing people who love each other, whether it’s romantic or platonic or anything in between. i just want them to be happy! i just want them to stick together! doesn’t matter what fandom, i stand by it.

hey so what shows have you stopped watching? And which ones do you still watch?

Hi, friend! Thanks for the ask, and I hope this answer finds you having a good day! I don’t know if this is unusual or not, but t100 was the last weekly-airing tv show that I watched for pretty much the entire 7 seasons it was on. My husband and I stopped buying cable over 10 years ago, so we have the channels that come via antenna & Netflix and Hulu. I haven’t watched typical tv since t100 ended, and legit I can’t remember watching much before that either. I am well suited to the binging life though! Usually I watch something once the kids and DH are asleep (I’m the night owl with terrible sleep habits), and some of the shows on Netflix I’ve watched and enjoyed recently are Shadow & Bone (haven’t read the books), Bridgerton (I read all those books), The Queen’s Gambit, Alice In Borderland (whoa this was a wild ride!), a Sense8 rewatch, Derry Girls, some dance shows/movies for an upcoming Murven fic, Black, Wu Assassins rewatch, Barbarians, Vagabond (so freakin’ good! I love kdramas and this one was fabulous!!). I also started Sisyphus but didn’t realize it updated weekly so I stopped watching since I wanted to binge. All 16 eps are posted now but they’re like an hour each and I’m only through ep 2, so that’s coming up on my agenda. What I’ll watch upcoming seasons of soon (if we get them) - Umbrella Academy, The Witcher, Alice In Borderland, Arthdal Chronicles, Kingdom, Stranger Things, The Last Kingdom. Really looking forward to The Last Kingdom!

I’ve stalled out on Vikings in late s4. I was watching that on Hulu. I love Kathryn Winnick though so maybe I’ll eventually get back into it. I watch The First 48 with DH on Hulu too. I also do a decent amount of nature/space shows and Dr. Who eps with my kids and DH, and now & then I pick home/garden & cooking shows too. DD and I love to watch TGBBO together!

ARE YOU STAYING HOME FROM WORK AND SCHOOL? The entire film industry shut down on March 13th in NYC, so I’m super unemployed right now. Yes. Yes I’m staying home. (Actually I went to my mother’s house because she’s a boomer and I don’t trust her to STAY INSIDE without another human in her house.)

IF YOU’RE STAYING HOME, WHO’S THERE WITH YOU? My 70 year old mother. Who apparently defrosts meat by leaving it on the counter all day. (I’ve learned SOME THINGS since essentially moving back home for the near future.)

ARE YOU A HOMEBODY? I am chronically a homebody. However now that I can’t leave home, I wanna go do all the things! (I’m not gonna. I just want to.)

AN EVENT THAT YOU WERE LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT GOT CANCELLED? I had TWO cruises planned for this summer, and I’d never gone on a cruise before so I was really excited. Also a big family Disney trip was cancelled as well as Dapper Day at Disney. And I’m bracing myself for the possibility that DragonCon might be cancelled. Oh and we didn’t finish our season and our wrap party is super duper cancelled. (This all makes logical sense and I support these cancellations. I’m just disappointed.)

WHAT MOVIES HAVE YOU WATCHED RECENTLY? I’ve mostly been binging tv. But I watched Frozen 2, Troop Zero, and X Men: Dark Phoenix.

WHAT SHOWS ARE YOU WATCHING? Roswell New Mexico is the show I’m most excited about each week. I’m also watching Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist and Salem: Motherland. I’m rewatching Leverage right now and might rewatch Sense8 soon.

WHAT MUSIC ARE YOU LISTENING TO? Someone made a playlist on Spotify called Glycerin. It’s a Malex playlist (I wanna say it’s @bisexualalienblast ‘s work?) I’ve basically been playing that on repeat since every single song makes me happy.

WHAT ARE YOU READING? I am wallowing so deep in the recesses of Ao3. I’m reading fanfic. So much fanfic. All the fanfic. Bless you writers.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING FOR SELF-CARE? I’m bothering people online about sad aliens. I’m also trying to take at least one walk a day. And I FaceTime with my 4 year old niece about twice a week.

ayeee what were your favorite tv shows when you were a kid? and now? :) also, a movie you're looking forward to watch?

I can’t remember all the stuff I watched as a kid and I didn’t always like telly but I can recall having a DEEP LOVE for The Winx (old version, not the new one I think is on now?) and also the transformers (cartoon), bc we have a bunch of the episodes so we watched it and it was so g o o d.nowadays I don’t rlly watch many tv shows either but I really enjoyed sense8 and I have a soft spot for well done anime, so I love Hunter x Hunter to death, and I will love it TO my death. when I first watched it last year (?) I just,, binged it.one movie I want to see? hm. I want to rewatch kingsmen desperately and I want to see crazy rich asians (which I think I actually am seeing soon)

6. 3 characters that inspire you

Shaun Murphy - The Good Doctor | Being a person who tends to lock herself in his own mind, the only thing I can say is that I needed to see this type of representation, because it is raw and at the same time, you can still glimpse hope in it. A character like Shaun inspires you to accept that you cannot get frustrated for being who you are, you just have to accept it, live with it, improve, move forward, it is not about blocking yourself and believing that it cannot be fixed, although that idea is difficult to process at times.

Elle Woods (crack!) - Legally Blonde | I’m a law student, and this movie is the only motivation you have when it’s 4:17 in the morning, and you have to figure it out how not to lose your mind, being kind, have good grades and look neat for seven days more even if you had just nine hours of sleep in the past week.

Katherine Johnson - Hidden Figures | Whether in the movie or in real life, this woman is an example of resilience, improvement and power. She took many first steps in her field, breaking the glass ceiling barriers that women, black people or anyone else who is excluded for some reason usually face.

I don’t have more options here, If the fact that I am not bored with them implies watch them again, because I’m the kind of person that once I finish a show I never look back, usually the reason is I remember every moment quite well, even if I love the show, I’m aware that I remember it, so there’s no reason to going back. And this happens with movies as well. Also, sometimes there are so many triggers in the shows/movies I watch, that I don't consider a good decision to put myself through it again if I don't want to.

But if it doesn’t implies rewatch I choose Criminal Minds and Sense8.

2020

This year, oof.

My mental health was the worst it's been since 2016 for a lot of it. I was unemployed for 3 months, desperately trying to find a job but couldn't, ended up using up my savings and having to start over when I got a new job. I cut off a bad family member which led to me not really being able to participate in family things because they were always there. It was not an easy year, not at all, and I know that has been the case for pretty much everyone.

Um. Idk. What good things happened?

Pre-pandemic, I was in a quasi-leadership position at my job! My family and I moved. Spinning Out came out, and I think I binged the entire thing on New Year's. I rewatched it multiple times throughout the year. I was able to visit my s/o in Boston for our 4 year anniversary. We went to some hot springs the week before lockdown. Crescent City came out! I commissioned a custom funko of the MC of the project I started working on.

Then the pandemic, and getting hazard pay. Motherland: Fort Salem was airing, and I looked forward to new episodes every week. I was sort of part of writing twitter, and had started working on a new wip while still sending out queries for my first ms. I did Camp Nano in April and ended up finishing the first draft of artist wip that month. I clocked some of the biggest wordcount days I ever had; 7000 for some of them! I started beta reading for an indie author (The Cute Mutants books, if you want to look them up!) and would continue to do that throughout the year as they churned out more drafts.

I got sick, lost my job. Was entirely too optimistic about how easy it would be to find something else. I ended up regressing back into my eating disorder and was extremely suicidal as days turned into weeks turned into months and I... Was unemployed. My s/o and I went 5 months without seeing each other due to distance.

I turned 24. Went to a national park w my dad. I started revising artist wip and somewhere along the way, started drafting my current wip which I am still plucking away at. I want to finish it this year. I also wrote a bit for my first ms's world for fun. I read a lot.

Idk. Most of this year is a haze from just how brutally depressed I was. I'm kind of unsure of timelines for things and everything, lol.

But I worked out, on and off. Visited my horse during the early hours of morning or late at night when I could avoid the anti-maskers. Went on a lot of canyon drives.

My car ended up having engine problems, and since it was 10 years old and with over 250k miles, my dad replaced it. That was quite something.

I got a job at Wal-Mart - the worst i've ever had, lol. I wanted to cry within the first 2 hours of my first shift and wished I could quit by the 4th hour, lol. People treat workers there so terribly, and the workers take their frustrations out on each other. I wish people would just be decent to each other.

My s/o and I deliberated over if me going to visit him would even be a safe thing or not; we ended up going with yes. He paid for the whole thing since I had hardly any money at the time. Again, I am very lucky.

I ended up quitting Wal-Mart after literally everyone in my life was telling me to, lol, and got another job in... August? September? That I have had since and is my current job. I hope this year I can find something that pays better and that I enjoy but for now... I have a job.

I ended up trying out meds for my bipolar. I couldn't tell if they were working or not, but my s/o says he noticed a difference. I fell off them a couple months ago after trying and failing for weeks to get ahold of my doctor about the side-effects I was experiencing. I would like to try meds again, though.

My s/o came back! No more long distance after 2 years! Having him here has been so nice. I can't wait to move in together. We've done little roadtrips to scenic places and a national park, and it has been so nice.

I found Sense8 on Netflix, and binged that. I tried new things, like authentic ramen. I have a savings again. I read, a lot, lol.

Biden won! God, the relief. I ended up buying pretty masks instead of just the disposable ones, bc who knows how long this will go on, you know?

And... Yeah. I've basically just been working, reading, spending time with my s/o, visiting my horse when I can. I haven't written much the past few months, but i've been thinking/brainstorming for them a lot.

I'm sure I'm forgetting a lot but... There we are. 2020.
