I just wanna say bc I KNOW you're somewhere on tumblr, to the teenage girl who attended Take Your Kid To Work Day at an office building in Ontario, Canada circa 2013 and had a conversation with a middle aged woman in which you showed her your Black Veil Brides fanart and fanfics and ship content and told her about different fanfic tropes including a/b/o verse bc she happened to know who Panic! at The Disco and Fallout Boy were and thus you felt the need to show her your bandblr ship art, that was my fucking mother and I had to clarify all that to her including looking my mother in the eye and trying to explain a/b/o verse without sounding like a lunatic.
It's been 10 years and I still regularly sent evil energies in your direction. Since you'd be probably two years younger than me and thus legally an adult now, please know if this post reaches you it's on sight.

Final Bug Fact:
The world NEEDS bugs. They keep the soil healthy, pollinate, control pests, and contribute to the worlds' ecosystem. By the end of the century, it is estimated 40% of insect species may go extinct due to habitat loss. Yes, that is very scary. But with even one beetle spared, one caterpillar rescued, and one Hollow Knight comic of all things, things will change. Because I know there's a lot more Dewi's out there than most people realize. Stay curious.
Tumblr media
Thanks for going on this adventure with me. ♥︎
First || Prev // END... VOLUME 2 is Out.
Masterpost
Comic Thoughts and Pictures Below!
I wanted to put here how amazing and sweet everyone has been with this comic. I finished a 75 page comic in 3 MONTHS. I am at a loss for words. That sounds crazy and it IS crazy. But man was it fun. Even on days were I wasn't able to draw due to fatigue or business, I loved working on it from start to finish. And guess what!? This is my first ever FINISHED comic :D I'm so proud of myself. I know there's some things I want to change and the art is wonky in most places...... but I'm content to let it be. What an amazing summer adventure!
I'm hoping to post the full comic on another Comic website. I may or may not edit some of the art ^w^ So I'll let y'all know when I release it.
Interested in learning what you could do to help your local insects? This is the basic stuff. Maybe make some Insect Hotels if you have the time!!! And never forget to spread the word about bugs. They need our help just as any animal on earth.

HTTYD List of Dragons that I’ve compiled including some of the most important, the freakiest, and generally ones I loved the most. And plenty of them that I believe Rhaegar would geek out about in a Viserys-Lego-Years-Long style.
Tumblr media
@syndrossi I hope you enjoy the read.
I figured to start out with the main dragons we meet in the first film as well as the ones we follow the most in the series since the main characters are their riders. These are the ones that have the most personality as well since we spend so much time with them, but almost always see personality in every dragon we meet in the show. The fun thing about these dragons is that not one of them have a whole ‘monster’ vibe ‘we gotta kill it’ no, there’s a reason why they act this way, sometimes they’re hungry, they’re searching for something, it’s about survival, but overall, the majority on this list are intelligent but wild animals. Some can be trainable, some can’t be, and that’s fine.
Dragons in this universe have a type of Class. I’ve never delved fully into it but from my recent research I’ve seen:
Stoker Class - mainly fire types, although a majority of all dragons have fire-breathing these are the main direct fire ones that rely on it the most.
Boulder Class - heavy, tough scales, mainly shoot lava type fire and eat rocks.
Sharp Class - contain some sharp anatomy body-types or sharp extremities, like spikes or horns.
Strike Class - very fast, very agile, amazing accuracy.
Tidal Class - water dwellers
Tracker Class - a new class in the show, it can be given to other dragons from other classes, it’s in the name, they’re able to track almost anything from miles away.
Fear Class - stealth, sneaky, terrifying.
Mystery Class - generally where dragons are placed when there isn’t much known about them or they’re very rare. It isn’t unusual for dragons to show up in Mystery Class only to be placed in a Class they fit in better after getting to learn their abilities and traits.
Now, onto the dragons! Dragons in this universe are ‘trainable’ in the sense that with enough time and trust, a dragon can technically be bonded to any human. This does not apply to all dragons of course and not to all humans, as a human needs to be as open as the dragon to form a bond. A rider is also not limited to their dragon and vice-versa. While they don’t typically switch around, there have been moments when main characters ride other dragons momentarily or their dragons are ridden by other people (again, rarely.)
Their diet is also mainly fish-related and raw. Although it depends on the dragon, some prefer chicken or goats, even fruits. And as we know, Boulder class enjoy rocks.
Night Fury
Tumblr media
The unholy offspring of lightning and death itself. The only one we ever really meet is Toothless. He is the fastest of the other dragons, a Strike Class and his flame is typically referred to as Plasma Blasts. Quick and powerful projectiles that land heavy damage to their enemies. Night Furies also tend to dive-bomb in a fight, using speed as their weapon and they have echolocation! They have retractable teeth and amazing accuracy, Hiccup himself says that Toothless “never misses”. They also have great acute senses, in the first movie, Toothless was able to hear his rider screaming all the way across the village in a hidden cove. This also showed how loyal Night Furies are as Toothless clawed his way out of that cove to get to Hiccup (something he tried before but couldn’t achieve before their bond was formed). They’re also intelligent creatures, when Hiccup spares his life upon their first meeting and decides to let him go, Toothless could have just killed him but recognizing mercy, let him go as well.
Tumblr media
Deadly Nadder
Tumblr media
Nadders are very beautiful and they know this. They enjoy pruning and keeping themselves clean. Nadders are in the Tracker Class (used to belong to the Sharp Class). They have folded spikes on their tails that they can extend and shoot like projectiles at enemies. Nadders are similar to birds or chickens in their walking stance, they have a blind spot right below their jaw but be careful! They have excellent hearing. They enjoy hunting in packs. Nadders are also very loyal to their riders, putting themselves in harms way to keep them safe.
Tumblr media
Gronkle
Tumblr media
A Boulder Class dragon, Gronkles love to eat rocks and shoot molten lava (and lava rocks) as their main fire power. They have thick heavy scales and a tail made for offense. They’re not the fastest with their small wings and they prefer to be on the ground (thats where you find rocks!) In the show, our main Gronkle, Meatlug, was fed a particular combination of rocks that led to her molten lava coming out and forming a type of light but incredibly tough metal. (Think of it as their version of Valyrian steel.) Sociable and like packs.
Tumblr media
Monstrous Nightmare
Tumblr media
These can be a bit of a show off, they like to think they’re the toughest of the tough in their Stoker Class. Perhaps that’s because they can light themselves on fire! Yep, Nightmares’ scales produce this flammable gel that they can activate to light on command. Hookfang, our resident Nightmare, doesn’t get to do it as often because it would burn his rider.
But since Jon and Rhaegar don't burn it wouldn't be much of a problem, although I doubt they'd like going into battle naked. OTOH, Daemon next to a flaming Caraxes is a new-level of terrifying.
Tumblr media
Hideous Zippelback
Tumblr media
Our only main Mystery Class dragon, oh! And did I mention he has TWO heads? Meet Barf and Belch, one head (on the left) breathes a green awful gas while the other has a sparking-type flame that sets the gas ablaze. After a while, dragons tend to mimic their riders personalities more often than usual, so when their riders, a pair of twins called Ruffnut and Tuffnut, start bickering or fighting, it’s not long before Barf and Belch start literally butting heads with each other.
Zippelbacks are also notoriously loyal to those that help or save them. When Hiccup and Toothless save them from a rock avalanche, the dragon sticks to the pair, in debt to them until it was repaid.
I particularly love how each head has a specific function and it isn't just random or basic like fire and ice (IYKYK). They're part of a cohesive system and work together, they need each other.
Tumblr media
all these previous dragons mentioned are easily trainable and sociable with both dragons and humans after the effort is put in.
bonus: Hiccup reading the Book of Dragons for the first time, we see a bunch of different dragons here for the first time! This is where we get to see the different types of dragons as well, and we do eventually meet all of them throughout the large franchise.
Time for more dragons! The following are dragons we get to see in the show, a few more recurring than most. The show does have a usual dragon-of-the-week format but not always. And it always depends on the situation but regardless we always add more to the dragon lore.
Whispering Death:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Boulder Class dragon that prefers to be underneath the earth than flying above it, uses its thousands of teeth to drill into the very earth.
Very lamprey-esque that still fills me with nightmares.
Have poor eyesight and a terrifying roar.
Hold grudges against dragons and humans.
Not the best fliers as they prefer to be on land.
They don't often travel in packs but they can, although it isn't brought up much.
not trainable.
Screaming Death
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He’s just a lil guy.
An albino giant Whispering Death called the Screaming Death in the show. It's said that a Screaming Death only comes to be every one hundred years. This one is a recurring obstacle in season 2 for the gang of dragon riders.
The Screaming Death we meet is a thousand times more ferocious than any previous Whispering Deaths’s we’ve seen before. He’s also barely a year old.
More than that, he was taken from his mother which is the cause of most of his behavior until he reunites with her in a season finale where he had been an ongoing obstacle for the the mains.
untrainable— DON'T EVEN TRY IT
Boneknapper
Tumblr media
What a name.
A Mystery Class dragon that, because of its weak scales, uses the bones of dead dragons to protect itself.
Very stubborn, it will go far and wide for years on end to find the perfect fit for his armor, even risking its life in the process.
Has a deafening roar that can send Vikings ten feet away from him. He's incredibly stealthy and able to sneak up on anyone.
We meet this dragon in a special short film.
trainable after some effort and offering something he wants.
Tumblr media
The Scauldron
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A Tidal Class dragon, meaning he's a water dweller.
The Scauldron shoots boiling hot water at its enemies.
Typical loners, and like most water dwellers they can't go long when stuck on land.
That’s how we meet Scauldy, a Scauldron that is stuck on land and the riders wish to rescue. He forms a bond with Ruffnut thanks to her fish-scented hair.
trainable, but rare and under the right circumstances.
Timberjack
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A Sharp Class dragon that we actually don't get to meet in the main series but rather the sequel series set in the future (it's eh)
Timberjacks have sharp wings that can cut through entire forests (and enemies).
They closely resemble Monstrous Nightmares in a way.
Loyal to their riders regardless of anything, these aren't dragons to mess with.
Trainable
Usually solitary.
Extra extra: EVEN MORE dragons for Rhaegar to go crazy over.
Terrible Terror
Tumblr media
So, in the books, Toothless was just a small common Garden dragon that got his name from the fact that his teeth just hadn't come in (and then when he got one, he lost it in a fight to an adult dragon).
When the writers began planning for the movies, they knew they wanted Hiccup to have a dragon big enough to ride, thus the size and species changed.
And so the Terrible Terror was born as an homage to the original Toothless.
Terrors are the size of a large cat or an iguana, they purr like cats and are part of the Stoker Class, so they are fire breathers.
But what they lack in size they make up for by attacking in large packs.
Terrors ended up being something of a comic relief from time to time. Although Hiccup did begin to train them to deliver messages, inventing 'Terror Mail'.
trainable
Thunderdrum
Tumblr media
One of the few Tidal Class dragons able to breath fire although they don't use it often, their main method of attack is actually a strong concussive sound that can kill a human in close range.
They can dwell easily on either land or water, and they can expel the oxygen from their body to flaten their bodies to be able to glide across the surface and easily catch their prey.
They can be reclusive but enjoy travelling in pods.
Thunderdrums are also hard of hearing, making them the only dragons known to be immune to the Deathsong dragon.
trainable but they are stubborn and a challenge.
Changewing
Tumblr media
This Mystery Class dragon is able to camaflouge using its chamaleon-like scales to blend into their surroundings.
Instead of fire, they shoot hot, corrosive acid that burn rocks and wood (as well as humans). They're also incredibly fast and stealthy.
One alone is a threat but can be taken down, thus why they hunt in packs. But they're large enough to defend themselves too.
Their packs also follow a typical lion pride style, as their females are the hunters.
Aggressive to humans and other dragons, they're also not opposed to eat both.
not trainable
Night Terrors
Tumblr media
Not exactly cousins to Terrible Terrors although they do receive their name from them.
These nocturnal Stoker Class bat-like dragons opperate best as a team.
They unite in masses to form a large shape as their main defense to scare off predators, typically following their Alpha (a slightly larger sized and white scaled Night Terror.)
We meet them in the beginning of Race to the Edge, the riders claim an empty island of their own and come across these little guys. By taking away the leader, the rest scramble and run, not able to function together as a group. They get along well and name the Alpha Night Terror, Smidvarg.
Since it's their island too, they come to an agreement and the Night Terrors act as sentries or sentinels for the island.
trainable.
Armorwing
Tumblr media
Not unlike the Boneknapper, this Mystery Class dragon uses metals to protect their scaleless bodies.
Their bodies are also somewhat magnetic, any metal coming into direct contact stays there until they can properly forge it.
Speaking of forging, when they do melt metal onto their body, their fire is unsually bright and one of the hottest seen.
I wouldn't be surprised if they were to be reclassified as a Stoker Class, even their shape is very Monstrous Nightmare-like.
Some actually have a preference for specific metals. It could range from iron, bronze, silver, or even gold.
Smothering Smokebreath
Tumblr media
They get their name from the fact that they can't breathe fire but rather exhale extreme thick plumes of black smoke.
These guys are not inherintly aggressive at all, they actually prefer to avoid fights.
They're always in packs due to their small size, only slightly bigger than Night Terrors. Together, their joint smoke breath appears like a natural fog bank, keeping them hidden and safe from predators.
Their reputation has been quite supernatural for years, thanks to their smoke, no one has ever gotten a good look at what they look like, making them larger than life and spreading scary tales.
They're also little thieves that like shiny things, typically stealing anything metal to keep in their caves.
not trainable, they don't like to leave their home, although i wouldn't 100% rule it out.
Speed Stinger
Tumblr media
Okay, I know, they look like velociraptors from Jurassic Park, bear with me.
For decades they were believed to be a rumor or legend.
The ultimate of the Strike Class, they don't have wings but are the fastest dragons on land that you'll ever meet. And I hope you never do.
They're scavengers and hunters, always in packs and never alone, using their poison tipped tails to paralyze any victims they claim.
Incredible aggressive and not an easily susceptible threat.
They typically get to places by running across glaciers and frozen bodies of water, but over time other packs have evolved and even developed webbing to be able to run across water.
They aren't trainable but it's not impossible, the riders once found an injured adolescent Stinger, nursed him back to health and managed to train him for months before sending him back to his pack.
This was a specific circumstances case, so I would still call them untrainable.
Deathsong
Tumblr media
The Deathsong is one of new dragons we get to meet and name along the way.
Very beautiful on the outside, resembling a butterfly to attract prey from afar but that's not all it can do. Coming from its name, the Deathsong's most potent form of attack is its siren song.
Able to attract and disoritent humans and dragons alike.
Once prey has arrived, the Deathsong is able to shoot out an orange hot type of lava at its victims that hardens instantly like amber.
This way it keeps its victims on standby before consuming them, dragon and human alike.
Aggressive and solitary.
Not trainable as an adult, but we did see the riders train one since he was a hatchling, forming a bond that lasted even years after being in the wild.
Foreverwing
Tumblr media
The only dragon we don't get to see in the movies or the shows but I included him since he was just so interesting.
He's one of the Titan dragons due to his colossal size and has thick foliage and trees that grow on his back.
Foreverwings sleep for a long time, typically on mountains so their backs grow larger and denser, becoming homes for all matter of creatures, dragons and animals alike, able to live in peace and harmony amongst each other.
It also spews copious amounts of lava able to take down entire villages.
More dragons:
Dramillion - this dragon is capable of mimicing fire blasts of other dragons
Snow Wraith - a cold dwelling dragon, entirely white with red eyes, solitary and impossible to find
Catastrophic Quaken - her mouth opens in a split way that makes it terrifying. also can curl into itself like an armadillo and smashing themself against enemies or large rocks
Typhoomerang - A new species of dragon that the gang encounters. Their first dragon that isn't in the Book of Dragons actually, so they get to name the species and spend time with a hatchling for a while. These Dragons leave scorch marks on the ground not unlike a typhoon sigil and tend to come back down the same way, like a boomerang.
And there are so, so, so many more.

Fluffvember prompt - Going on an adventure // Malon and Link go to Castle Town and chaos ensues
(Featuring Malon and Link in an established friendship with a hint of something more <3)
“Oh… I don’t know, Link, I can’t go like this!”
Link threw a confused look over his shoulder, feeling his chest bubbling with both excitement and bewilderment. “But Malon, you always look like a mess when you work in the field, anyway.”
Malon froze, cheeks as flushed as her red hair, eyes widening. Link stared at her a moment longer and then realized his mistake. Before he could hastily backtrack, though, Malon groaned.
“That’s the point though – I wanted to look nice today!”
“That’s not the point of today,” Link replied, easing Epona’s steady trot so he was alongside his friend. He reached out to her, only a little shyly, and twirled one of the little bits of hair spilling out of the cloth she’d tied around her head. “Besides, you always look beautiful when we go to Castle Town.”
Malon watched him for a moment, face softening, and she leaned in just enough that his finger brushed her cheek. Link took the invitation, letting his thumb trace along her face a moment before Epona nickered a little and the pair pulled away from each other. Malon huffed, “Oh, fine, Epona, I’ll stop complaining.”
Link chuckled and watched as she took off the handkerchief, revealing two braids she’d interwoven on each side of her head. They were a little frizzy, but they looked pretty nice, and it reminded him of some of the Gerudo warriors he’d interacted with in the past. Seeing as they’d been the inspiration for the hairstyle, he wasn’t surprised.
“Does it look okay?” Malon asked.
Link smiled. They’d already agreed that today was just for fun – no worries, no cares about chores or responsibilities or appearances – but he knew she still needed the reassurance. “It looks great.”
Malon beamed. “Okay. I always wanted to try it – the Gerudo have such pretty hairstyles! There’s no way I could ever have that fancy jewelry they wear but this’ll have to do.”
The pair continued their trek towards Castle Town in peace, and Link found himself almost giggling. Two days ago they’d agreed to take a trip to Castle Town purely for fun – no milk runs, no errands, no melancholy gazes towards the castle. This day was just for them to explore Castle Town in ways they hadn’t – Link recalled running around the area as a child, but as his journey had continued it had become less of a priority.
Not to mention seeing what Ganondorf had done to the place had messed with his mind a fair amount. He’d spent his first return to Castle Town after that just roaming around making sure everyone was alive. He still sometimes found himself staring into dark alleys too long, wondering if a ReDead was around the corner or if he’d find another dying soldier.
But today wasn’t about reassurances, nor was it filled with the busyness of doing work for Talon.
Link discovered, though, as they reached the moat, that he had no idea what to do if the day was just about him and Malon.
His friend seemed to retain her excitement, though, and she nearly leapt off her horse, handing the reigns off to a stableman at the gate. Link followed, smiling at her infectious cheer, but mind scrambling for ideas as to what they should do.
“Okay,” Malon said with a happy clap of her hands as they stood at the entrance to the city. “…Now what?”
Link couldn’t help the laugh that escaped him. Apparently he wasn’t the only one feeling a little lost.
“This is fine!” Malon argued at his cackling. “We said we’d make today about ourselves, and we will! Okay! So! What’s a place in Castle Town you always wanted to visit but never had time?”
Link hummed, thinking about it. “Bombchu bowling?”
Malon looked at him, nose scrunched. “I thought you had gone bowling?”
“Once,” Link answered before shuddering. “But one of the rounds… it was fun, but… well, maybe it’s changed since then.”
His friend continued to give him a bewildered expression before shrugging. “Well, let’s try it!”
Before Link had a second to register her words, she had grabbed him by the wrist and was dragging him through the market square. Running around with Malon without a care in the entire world was honestly more exhilarating than he had expected, and he laughed as he passed her, turning it into a race. Malon yelled in protest and the two practically barreled through the entrance and nearly ran over a patron already inside.
After a sheepish shrug from Link and an embarrassed apology from Malon, the two got their bombchus and headed to the bowling lane. Link recognized the first round immediately – they’d upgraded the device a little, and it looked like it had seen some wear and tear, but the blade trap still looked roughly the same as it had when he was a child.
He got by it just as easily as he had back then, too. Malon cheered him on with delight.
The next round, however…
“A cuccoo?” Malon questioned as the little feathered terror traipsed about. “What if it gets hurt?”
“They’re indestructible, Malon, don’t worry,” Link grumbled.
“Oh!” Malon scoffed. “They’re not and you know it! Is this why you stopped playing this game?”
Link sent the bombchu rolling, watching as it climbed the wall and made it into the next goal. “No…”
The destroyed wall crumbled, revealing the final round, and he saw his adversary, much to his dread. He felt the bottom drop out of his stomach, as if Ganondorf himself were standing there and cackling evilly. “That’s why.”
The final barrier to get through, beyond the blade trap and the cuccoo was a monstrous sized cuccoo, large enough to rival Link in height and twice his girth. Malon’s mouth dropped.
“What kind of cuccoo is that?” she asked.
“A demon,” Link answered.
“So did you never get passed it?”
“Passed it?!” Link repeated, motioning wildly at the beast. “Why would I even try? Do you want to anger that thing?! I had hoped I’d outlived it by now!”
“I’m still trying to figure out how it got so big,” Malon said thoughtfully, staring the monstrosity down.
“You’re not actually considering getting near it, are you?” Link asked worriedly.
“Well, the good news is that if the bombchus don’t bother the little one, this baby definitely won’t care if you miss!” Malon noted with a laugh. “But my goodness, it sure is big. You could ride it like a horse!”
Link felt the blood drain out of his face at the mere thought of it.
“Oh, stop being silly!” Malon huffed, nudging him aside with her hip. Electricity shot through him as she did so, unaware that he was now trying to catch his breath as she bit her lip in concentration to figure out how to aim the bombchu properly. When she released it, it managed to pass the blade trap and the little cuccoo, but the large one inhabited too much space to bypass. The bombchu let out a boom! and Malon gasped, covering her mouth.
The cuccoo clucked, unimpressed, before taking a small step to the left, foraging for food.
“I should’ve used that thing to fight Ganondorf,” Link muttered.
“We only have two left,” Malon noted, sounding a little disappointed. “We’ll have to try harder.”
Link looked between his friend and the cuccoo. This was definitely the stage that he had given up as a child – he’d had more pressing matters to attend to anyway, and there was no sense in risking his life when Hyrule needed to be saved. But now… watching the sad pout to Malon’s face emboldened him, just as seeing others in need always did.
Besides, the prize was a heart piece, a magical item that could grant some protection and healing enchantments. It could certainly come in handy. And it would look pretty on some jewelry for her.
Link took a fortifying breath and gently pushed Malon aside, taking the bombchus. “I’ll handle it.”
He calculated the path he would need to take carefully. Bypassing the first two obstacles was easy. He’d probably have to let the bombchu climb the wall to access the goal and get around the gigantic cuccoo.
Link released the bombchu and the pair watched it go. When it got through the cuccoo without a hitch, Link couldn’t help the little cheer that escaped him, only for his face to fall in disappointment as the bombchu exploded outside the goal.
Well… great. Now they only had one left.
A devious idea popped into his mind, and he paused, considering it. Doing what he was planning would technically be cheating, but… it was already an unfair advantage to have such an adversary on the playing field without a way to defeat it.
Handing the bombchu to Malon, Link said, “Wait for my signal and then send it off.”
“Your signal?” Malon repeated, confused. “What signal?”
Link surveyed the area, knowing he’d caught sight of it earlier—ah, there it was. A large pot, tucked into a corner, and filled with a familiar scent. He traipsed over to the pot and turned sharply, his shoulder hitting the rim and knocking it clean over.
Wheat grains spilled everywhere, and, as predicted, the cuccoos immediately squawked in excitement. Malon hastily let the bombchu loose as Link ran for his life from the oncoming feathery horde, yelping to avoid the frantic owner of the bowling alley. The bombchu hit its target, knocking the final wall away to reveal the heart piece awaiting its victors.
“Was that really the best way to do that?” Malon whispered as Link shrugged at the owner with a sheepish smile.
“Listen,” Link fired back quietly. “That blasted bird has been hoarding that heart piece for almost a decade. Which means people have been throwing bombchus at it for a decade. This way, the bird finally gets to retire from being attacked.”
Malon scrunched her nose in the way that he loved, the way she would when she was debating a matter. Her eyes narrowed looking at him, reading through his excuse but giving in to it nonetheless. “I suppose you’re right.”
The pair blinked as they went out into the sunlight once more, and, after Link offered a giggling Malon the heart piece, found themselves stuck again.
“Now what?” Link asked.
“This is ridiculous, we should’ve planned an itinerary,” Malon huffed with some amusement.
“I think that was against the whole idea of the day,” Link offered with a small smile.
“Well clearly we’re not good at being spontaneous!” Malon sighed.
That didn’t seem true at all, but Link wasn’t going to argue the point. What they clearly were awful at was not having something to do. Both kept themselves busy, either with farm work or adventuring, and that was the reason Talon had suggested they take a day off.
“You two work so much you’ll work your lives away,” he’d said. “Go to town and have fun! The ranch will still be here and intact when you get back.”
It had taken a few more days to convince Malon that her father wouldn’t be sleeping on the job before they’d finally agreed. And here they were, barely at midday and already over it.
“I see people throw rupees into the fountain,” Link commented. “They do it all the time. Maybe there’s something to it?”
“They just do that to make wishes,” Malon commented, though she guided him to the fountain nonetheless. “I’ve heard people talk about it. Dad and I did it once – I wished—”
Suddenly, she cut herself off, stopping short of the fountain. Link paused, peering around her shoulder to look at her face. Malon swallowed, chewing the inside of her lip and hastily moved ahead. “Well, never mind that, maybe we—”
In her haste, Malon lost her footing, tripping on uneven cobblestone, and she nearly faceplanted into the fountain itself. Link moved forward quickly to catch her, grabbing at the back of her shirt and instead successfully falling with her. He pulled her to him and turned to take the brunt of the fall, and they both nearly gasped in a lungful of water as the cold temperature shift shocked their systems. Thankfully, the fountain was shallow, and the pair instead lay half soaked in the water, blinking at each other in bafflement at what had just happened.
Malon laughed. Link found himself laughing too, especially at the exaggerated noises of surprise and irritation from the local women who had been gossiping while waiting in line for one of the market stands.
“Make a wish, fairy boy!” she giggled.
“I wish…” he started uncertainly, still chuckling and coughing slightly on water.
“Not out loud!” Malon interrupted, clamping a hand over his mouth and making them both fall into the water once more with a squeal. After a moment, though, she made a disappointed noise as she looked down at herself. “Oh, this dress is going to be ruined. As if I didn’t look questionable enough.”
“What are you talking about?” Link asked, leaning forward and putting her sopping wet hair over her shoulder. A mischievous glint shone in his eye and pulled at his lips. “You are… more beautiful than Princess Zelda.”
Malon stared at him a moment before catching the reference, poking his chest. “Oh, and you are just as handsome as the King of Hyrule.”
The pair stared at each other a moment longer before the façade fell apart as they burst into fits of laughter. The sour look from the familiar married couple who constantly subjected everyone to such sappy lines with their innumerable public displays of affection was definitely amusing enough to send Link into full-on hysterics.
Eventually, the cold water began to get a little too chilly, and the pair climbed out of the fountain (Link was definitely tempted to fish the rupees out of the water, but he felt that would be rude). They decided spending the afternoon laying outside the Temple of Time might be a good way to dry off and relax. Malon started to doze a little bit, but somehow the idea of sleeping by the temple left Link feeling far too ill at ease to actually get any rest. Instead, he settled for watching Malon and the occasional passerby who went to pray.
When evening fell, both Link and Malon realized they hadn’t eaten since breakfast, and decided dinner at one of the local restaurants was in order. Link had no idea how to order, having never been to a restaurant, and Malon was not of much help since she mostly spent her days at the ranch, but they managed to figure it out. When that was done, most of the townsfolk had begun to head home, and Malon wondered if they should as well.
At least until the stray dogs came out.
Gasping in delight, Malon reached down to pet one, and Link started to chase a few as more chased him. The two giggled and ran all over the city, watched only by the guards leading to the castle, who didn’t bother hiding their smiles.
It wasn’t until the moon was high in the sky that they realized their mistake.
“Wait!” Malon said, stopping suddenly. “The gate! The gate closes at sunset!”
Link froze. “Oh.”
They had to stay the night here.
Well. Unless…
“I could… there is a way…” Link said hesitantly. “But… only if you really want to.”
Malon looked around uncertainly. “Is it dangerous?”
“Not really, no.”
“Oh,” his friend wrung her hands nervously. “Can we? I don’t… I’ve never spent a night away from home. It’s silly, I guess, but…”
Link smiled. “Don’t worry, I got it.”
Pulling his ocarina from his pack (despite Talon’s insistence that he take no weapons to the city, Link had still grabbed all his supplies), he played the familiar song that had saved his neck plenty of times. The notes danced out with a little bit of hesitancy as he tried to remember the fingering on the instrument, but as he gained confidence and added the correct rhythm, he felt the ocarina warm with magic.
In the blink of an eye, the moon nearly plummeted to the horizon, making Link’s heart stop for just a second despite knowing it was going to happen, and the sun sprang up.
Malon’s jaw dropped. “How did you—?”
“Let’s go!” Link said with a laugh, grabbing her by the wrist. The citizens of Castle Town blearily peaked out of their homes, windows opening in as people peered around in confusion. When they reached the guard house at the gate, the soldiers were staring up at the sky, eyes wide.
Link cleared his throat. “Excuse me. Can you open the gate, please?”
The guard stared at him. “W-wh—but it’s—”
“It’s clearly day,” Link said innocently with a smile. “The gate’s supposed to open at sunrise.”
The guard couldn’t offer an argument, and so Malon and Link got their steeds. Epona seemed to be staring at Link judgingly, and he laughed at her expression. She’d seen him do this trick a number of times, after all, and it usually resulted in little sleep for either of them. Thankfully, that wouldn’t be the case today.
After all, he could make it night again once they got back to the ranch.
“Link, how did you do that?” Malon asked as they rode out into Hyrule Field.
“Just a trick I learned on the road,” Link tossed back casually.
“You know you can’t keep dodging my questions about that stuff,” Malon replied.
No, he supposed he couldn’t. But not today. Today was just for fun. And it had been fun. He hoped it could end that way too.
When they got back to the ranch, Link was endlessly entertained (and unsurprised) to find that Talon hadn’t even noticed the daylight and was instead snoring loudly in his room. Link played the ocarina again, and the sun and moon traded places once more.
“That’s… disorienting,” Malon noted as she stared at the sky.
“It could get that way, yeah,” Link huffed. When he looked back down he saw Malon staring at him. “Uh… what is it?”
Malon sighed, looking at the ground. “Nothing. I just… wish you’d talk to me. I know I’m just a dumb farm girl, but—”
“Malon,” he interrupted hastily. “I don’t think—you’re not—”
“I had fun today,” she interrupted with a small smile. “Did you?”
Link stumbled over all the words that had been spilling out of his mouth, and he took a breath, returning her smile. “Yeah… yeah, I did. And…”
He trailed off, uncertain how to continue. Malon watched him curiously, though she still held a degree of coolness after her previous statements. Clearly he’d hurt her feelings a little, and he felt awful for it.
He still struggled to figure out what to say. So instead, he stepped forward, planting a chaste kiss on her cheek. He felt her face grow warm under the touch, and the blush he saw confirmed it as he pulled away. “I thought today was nice too.”
Malon fanned her face with an exasperated, “Oh, you! That wasn’t funny!”
Link laughed nonetheless, pulling her into a hug, and she laughed with him, returning the embrace in full.

In short- the bugs of Hallownest did not take it well. Lots of screaming about "The end of the world" and "past sins coming back to haunt them". Elderbug almost had his second heart attack and basically every bug, other than the Pale King children and Quirrel, hid for several hours. (Zote likes to claim he was the first to make contact)
As for why Dewi's Dad is in Dirtmouth? Well, he wasn't very happy when his 11 year old son told him about going into a 'mysterious cave' to see his bug friends. Adult supervision and all that.

This post goes out to my Father for regularly giving my heart attacks.
Context: I am a sfw artist. I completed that Rouge piece today. I am living with my parents, and regularly show them my personal artwork because I'm a little prideful alright? My father is super excited to see this drawing of my dnd character, and he excitedly asks to take a picture and yeah, that's fine. I leave him unattended and go talk to my mom in another room.
I return, and this man has my sketchbook flipped open looking through it like a kid at the candy shop, and I am desperately trying to roll through my head to figure out if I somehow had nsfw art or a rude gesture or smth that'd make him judge me. I do not. I decide it's safe. I have forgotten about Baddie, my Helluvaboss oc. Pros: My father likes his design and asks about him. Cons: I almost instinctively, casually, referred to him as a 'manwhore' when questioned. I kept that thought inside, but instead got very flustered. He did not notice.
I am very lucky my father supports me and loves what I draw, but I am also very afraid because this guy has also seen my laptop open and started reading a (fairly embarrassing) oc/self insert fic I was writing about Voltron (it was not ship stuff, just me digging into worldbuilding) but I was like 14 and he'd gotten almost a full page or two in before I returned to the room and panicked.
So, half a decade and nothing's changed 🙏.
